  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. It's really good to come to be at worship with you on this memorable Sunday, the second

  3. Lord's Day of Advent, as together we prepare the way.

  4. And I say thank you to the team that has welcomed us as we came through, and also to my colleague

  5. Russell, who has been keeping me a breath of what's going on, how the service is likely

  6. to go, and so far it is as planned.

  7. And I thank God that again this morning I don't have to lead the service.

  8. Someone, Alex, has been leading for us, and the band has been doing a marvelous job.

  9. Could you put your hand together for the band?

  10. They did a good job.

  11. They did this morning.

  12. Yeah.

  13. Now, I'd like you to share with me, this morning you asked me two questions.

  14. I'd like to ask you one question.

  15. Is that okay?

  16. Okay.

  17. I am visiting, and I'm driving around, and I see this building, and on the board you have

  18. Christ Church.

  19. And I'd love to come and worship with you.

  20. So give me three things you do that will encourage me to come and be part of this worship experience.

  21. Remember, I'm visiting.

  22. Three things you do, or you are, that will encourage me to be part of this fellowship.

  23. Here we go.

  24. A warm welcome.

  25. And what does that mean, a warm welcome in Christ Church?

  26. Good coffee.

  27. Good coffee.

  28. Fine.

  29. There is something to take in, yes?

  30. Good coffee in terms of welcome.

  31. Anything else in terms of good welcome, wonderful welcome?

  32. Say that again.

  33. Friendly faces.

  34. Friendly faces are being part of the welcome.

  35. We want to know you as we welcome you into the community.

  36. A smile greets us.

  37. I got it this morning as I was parking the car.

  38. That's number one.

  39. Welcome.

  40. We haven't finished yet.

  41. Number two.

  42. Home groups.

  43. Can you say what that means to Christ Church?

  44. Home groups.

  45. Small groups of fellowship.

  46. And talking about Jesus.

  47. So there is fellowship within, which inhabits small groups scattered across the church, the community.

  48. Are we there so far, yeah?

  49. So as soon as I come, you say welcome.

  50. And as I get going into the church, immediately the possibility of joining a small group is available.

  51. Am I getting it right?

  52. Am I getting it right?

  53. Oh, I'm not hearing you.

  54. Nevertheless, number three.

  55. We get a good welcome.

  56. We have small groups.

  57. And number three is?

  58. Loving our community and joining in with the work of God.

  59. Joining our community and joining in wherever God is working.

  60. I can see social witness here.

  61. I can see outreach here.

  62. I can see attending to the community.

  63. I can see the community attending to us in many ways.

  64. So is that okay?

  65. You want me to stay still?

  66. Because I get welcome.

  67. I got fellowship.

  68. And I get something about the community.

  69. May I ask one more question?

  70. Yes.

  71. Someone to come and sit in the room and sit alone and also to one prayer.

  72. And I think I can't really want to go.

  73. Like, you're welcome.

  74. But I don't know.

  75. So, you're welcome.

  76. Oh, as part of the welcome, someone accompanies you to usher you into your seat

  77. and ensures that you are part of the service.

  78. That's wonderful.

  79. You want me to stop there, yeah?

  80. Now, the significance of Advent is an invitation to prepare the way

  81. as we attend to the reading that you have listened to this morning.

  82. But before we do so, that is, attending to the reading,

  83. I'd like to go briefly to how this Holy Bible, the Scriptures,

  84. to how it is structured.

  85. There are four main themes, and I'd like to focus on one as we prepare the way.

  86. The very first theme of this wonderful book, key theme,

  87. is the glory of God's creation in its splendor and perfection.

  88. You find that in Genesis chapters 1 and 2.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  89. It was good, God said, after every step of the way in the creation process,

  90. God declares it was good.

  91. That was Genesis chapters 1 and 2.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  92. We move on to the second theme in the entire Bible as it is structured and recorded here.

  93. The second theme is evidence of dysfunctionality in God's creation.

  94. We have the glorified creation of God in Genesis chapters 1 and 2.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  95. Then now there is evidence of dysfunctionality in God's creation

  96. from Genesis chapters 3 to Genesis chapter 11.

Genesis 3 chapter mention Genesis 11 chapter mention

  97. This is a mess there.

  98. We're killing each other.

  99. Dysfunctionality of God's creation and God got to a point,

  100. I wonder, I wonder why I created these people.

  101. Canculeble, the Tower of Babel, challenging God.

  102. God said, I'm not having it.

  103. And that takes us to the third theme of the Scriptures or the Bible as it is structured here.

  104. It is the momentous intervention.

  105. The momentous intervention starts or is to be within chapters or the books that I'm going to call

  106. from Genesis chapter 12, church, to Revelation chapter 20.

Genesis 12 chapter mention Revelation 20 chapter mention

  107. It's all about Advent.

  108. So the momentous intervention is about God's intervening in the history of humankind,

  109. in the history of God's creation to redeem that creation from Genesis chapters 3 to 11

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  110. back to Genesis chapters 1 and 2.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  111. That's why we have Advent.

  112. God's is a plan.

  113. In that redemption plan, which is made manifest in the coming of Jesus Christ,

  114. history was split into two.

  115. Do you recall this bit?

  116. That is B.C., the B.C. era,

  117. and the E.A.D. era, B.C. before Christ,

  118. and A.D., the time that comes after the year of our Lord,

  119. the year of Christ's birth,

  120. or the years or the era that follow birth of Christ,

  121. ministry of Christ,

  122. Christ, the cross,

  123. the cross,

  124. the ascension,

  125. history was split into two

  126. as a result of the momentous intervention of God.

  127. In the fullness of time, Galatians says,

  128. God sent his son, born of a woman.

  129. Why?

  130. There was a mission to redeem the world from,

  131. I know it's difficult to remember for some of us,

  132. Genesis chapters 3 to 11,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  133. back to Genesis chapters 1 and 2,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  134. or looking forward to Revelation chapters 21 and 22.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  135. In the fourth,

  136. the fourth theme is God's creation,

  137. the glorified nature of God's creation

  138. is fulfilled through Christ.

  139. Because in Revelation from chapter 21 onward,

  140. there was a new creation.

  141. There was a new earth.

  142. There is a new heaven.

  143. The old have passed away,

  144. and behold, all has become new.

  145. The momentous intervention

  146. has recreated the world in Christ,

  147. by Christ, for Christ.

  148. And through Christ.

  149. Now,

  150. I invite you to reflect on

  151. your life BC.

  152. In other words,

  153. before Christ came,

  154. before the birth of Christ,

  155. what kind of life did you have?

  156. Or,

  157. before the birth of Christ in your own life,

  158. what life did you have?

  159. And now,

  160. I want you to reflect on the life AD,

  161. you have after Christ.

  162. The world has changed.

  163. Are you changing?

  164. Because you have met,

  165. encountered,

  166. received the gospel of truth.

  167. So God is saying to you and to me,

  168. the monotonous reality of life in terms of,

  169. by the way,

  170. can you help me remembering,

  171. to remember the different seasons of the year?

  172. What season are we in?

  173. And what follows?

  174. And?

  175. And?

  176. You sure, yeah?

  177. But I learned in England,

  178. you can't have all four in one day.

  179. Yeah.

  180. I want you to realize what's going on here.

  181. We have all the four seasons,

  182. every year,

  183. we don't miss anyone.

  184. Life will be just boring,

  185. monotonous,

  186. without God's intervention.

  187. So,

  188. that is,

  189. the chronos of time

  190. means little

  191. until God intervenes

  192. in terms of

  193. kairos,

  194. k-a-i-r-o-s.

  195. In the Greek terminology,

  196. it means

  197. God's appointed time,

  198. God's own time

  199. to do something.

  200. So,

  201. at the chaotic moment of life,

  202. in the fullness of time,

  203. God sent his son.

  204. And that's

  205. the momentous intervention

  206. in the world.

  207. That momentous intervention

  208. unites

  209. humanity,

  210. creation to God

  211. in Christ,

  212. in the power

  213. of the Holy Spirit.

  214. But let's move forward a bit

  215. because I'd like to stay

  216. at

  217. point

  218. theme number three.

  219. So,

  220. God,

  221. according to the momentous intervention,

  222. had been preparing

  223. the way

  224. in

  225. his son,

  226. or God's son,

  227. being

  228. the way,

  229. the truth,

  230. and the life.

  231. So,

  232. long before

  233. John the Baptist

  234. was the voice

  235. in the wilderness

  236. crying out,

  237. preparing the way,

  238. God

  239. had already

  240. prepared the way

  241. in Jesus Christ.

  242. You find that

  243. in Genesis

    Genesis 3:15

  244. chapter 3,

  245. verse 15.

  246. While the mess

  247. was going on,

  248. God said,

  249. I have a plan

  250. to redeem humanity,

  251. to redeem creation,

  252. to redeem my

  253. beloved glorified world.

  254. So,

  255. if God has had a plan,

  256. and God's plan is about

  257. prosperity,

  258. redemption,

  259. salvation,

  260. and that plan,

  261. let's travel with me,

  262. takes me to a second

  263. point I want you to focus

  264. with,

  265. to focus on with me,

  266. it's defining

  267. moment.

  268. Wait,

  269. let's look at it

  270. differently.

  271. If you're moving

  272. from the momentous

  273. intervention,

  274. that is too big

  275. for me,

  276. Mark,

  277. break it down.

  278. I say,

  279. okay,

  280. you want me to

  281. break it down?

  282. Every time God

  283. comes to you

  284. in your times

  285. of needs

  286. and concerns

  287. and frustrations,

  288. you're experiencing

  289. a defining moment.

  290. Jesus comes.

  291. It's not just

  292. Christ had come.

  293. Jesus comes.

  294. He comes now

  295. to those

  296. who are suffering.

  297. and his

  298. intervention,

  299. I mean,

  300. Jesus' intervention

  301. in our suffering,

  302. in our frustration,

  303. is

  304. a defining

  305. moment,

  306. which is a

  307. moment

  308. you claim

  309. or God

  310. makes real

  311. to you

  312. in the

  313. momentous

  314. intervention.

  315. at creation,

  316. we had a moment

  317. of orientation.

  318. When this creation

  319. was infected

  320. by sin,

  321. we had a moment

  322. of disorientation.

  323. And this current

  324. moment with

  325. Advent,

  326. Christ is ushering

  327. a moment

  328. of reorientation

  329. to this world

  330. and that moment

  331. of reorientation,

  332. that new moment

  333. of Advent

  334. is being

  335. made real,

  336. is being made

  337. real to you

  338. in your concerns

  339. about how

  340. to live.

  341. Let's

  342. get some

  343. examples

  344. across.

  345. Do you recall

  346. when you first

  347. met the Lord?

  348. Do you recall

  349. that?

  350. Oh,

  351. have you ever

  352. met the Lord?

  353. That was

  354. a defining

  355. moment.

  356. Christ didn't

  357. just come,

  358. okay,

  359. he's come

  360. for the

  361. Chinese.

  362. He's come

  363. for the

  364. Americans.

  365. He's come

  366. for the

  367. Europeans.

  368. He's come

  369. for you

  370. individually.

  371. And that

  372. is the

  373. momentous

  374. intervention

  375. becoming

  376. your individual

  377. reality when

  378. Jesus Christ

  379. comes into

  380. your life

  381. and says,

  382. there is room

  383. in my heart

  384. for you,

  385. Lord.

  386. That's a

  387. defining moment

  388. for you.

  389. When I became

  390. a child of

  391. God,

  392. I would have

  393. been quite

  394. young,

  395. 14.

  396. I never

  397. looked back.

  398. that was a

  399. defining moment

  400. in my life.

  401. When I had a

  402. critical accident,

  403. having studied

  404. quite well as a

  405. young man,

  406. 24,

  407. 25,

  408. moving on,

  409. I had a

  410. critical accident.

  411. I love riding

  412. back in those

  413. old good days

  414. as a young

  415. man.

  416. I had a

  417. critical accident

  418. as a

  419. Methodist

  420. local preacher.

  421. and the

  422. message was

  423. clear.

  424. When are

  425. you going

  426. to stand

  427. in the

  428. pulpit and

  429. preach my

  430. word and

  431. be a

  432. missionary?

  433. I didn't

  434. understand.

  435. In that

  436. critical and

  437. terrible accident,

  438. there was a

  439. defining moment.

  440. Christ came

  441. and rescued

  442. me.

  443. Have you

  444. ever had a

  445. defining

  446. moment,

  447. an occasion

  448. when your

  449. life has

  450. changed

  451. forever?

  452. Take a

  453. moment to

  454. remember.

  455. And that

  456. defining

  457. moment

  458. is an

  459. element

  460. in terms

  461. of God's

  462. momentous

  463. intervention

  464. cascades

  465. into your

  466. little world,

  467. my little

  468. world.

  469. Mary

  470. Magdalene

  471. approached

  472. the tomb.

  473. All that

  474. she knew

  475. became of

  476. a different

  477. reality when

  478. Jesus Christ

  479. said,

  480. woman,

  481. whom are

  482. you looking

  483. for?

  484. She said,

  485. I'm looking

  486. for Jesus

  487. of Nazareth.

  488. You and

  489. the gardener,

  490. where have

  491. you put

  492. him?

  493. And what

  494. did Jesus

  495. say?

  496. He moved

  497. from woman

  498. to Mary.

  499. That was

  500. a defining

  501. moment in

  502. Mary's

  503. life.

  504. from that

  505. time,

  506. Mary

  507. couldn't

  508. be held

  509. back.

  510. Even the

  511. great Peter

  512. and John

  513. couldn't

  514. believe that

  515. woman.

  516. Have you

  517. ever had

  518. a defining

  519. moment?

  520. Maybe

  521. defining

  522. moment in

  523. terms of

  524. healing.

  525. Defining

  526. moment in

  527. terms of

  528. a new

  529. start.

  530. Defining

  531. moment in

  532. terms of

  533. this church

  534. being what

  535. it is

  536. today.

  537. There

  538. was a

  539. time you

  540. were not

  541. what you

  542. are.

  543. There have

  544. been defining

  545. moments in

  546. this church.

  547. And again,

  548. I repeat,

  549. every defining

  550. moment is

  551. Advent coming

  552. to you in

  553. Christ.

  554. It's Christ

  555. being born in

  556. you.

  557. We encounter

  558. Christ in

  559. small measures

  560. as we say

  561. to him.

  562. Amen.

  563. Amen.

  564. Amen.

  565. Amen.

  566. Amen.

  567. Amen.

  568. Amen.

  580. Amen.

  581. Amen.

  582. Amen.

  583. Amen.

  584. Amen.

  585. Amen.

  586. Amen.

  587. Amen.

  588. Amen.

  589. Amen.

  590. Amen.

  611. Amen.

  612. Amen.

  613. Amen.

  614. Amen.

  615. Amen.

  616. Amen.

  617. Amen.

  618. we prepare our way to meet the Lord, to welcome him into our hearts, I want you to remember

  619. something. As Advent people, we are called to be adventurous. Now let's start from the

  620. beginning. There is a momentous intervention, all right? It's all over the world. But God has tailored,

  621. customized that momentous orientation to my own world, is mine when I experience a very significant

  622. moment in my life. Having received that, having been an Advent person or Advent people that we are,

  623. God is saying, I'm not having you sitting here in Christ's church, you know. You must be adventurous.

  624. Oh. If you look at what John the Baptist did,

  625. if you continue to read, his job was to prepare the way. So we are now replacing John the Baptist

  626. to enable the current community to prepare the way for the second coming of Christ. We have a,

  627. our job is well, well outlined. I ask you from the beginning, at the beginning rather,

  628. give me three things that you do well in this church. Would you like to believe this is part

  629. of your adventure? It's not easy to welcome someone. You don't know what the person has come for.

  630. You don't know what is driving this person. You don't know whether if you say good morning,

  631. the person will say, good morning. Or you don't know. It's an adventure there.

  632. In some cases, if you say to someone, where are you from, the person takes it the wrong way,

  633. then you're in trouble. Are you with me?

  634. You smile, and the person should smile. But the person doesn't smile because the person is going

  635. through a turmoil. Inside of that person, there is a war. He comes, she comes, they come to church,

  636. they can't sing, because the moment of disorientation is real. They come to see,

  637. to experience an advent. Sometimes the welcome process can take time. Be patient with one another.

  638. And you mentioned our fellowships and your work in the community. But I'd like you to remember this

  639. as I end, because I need to end, yeah? Is that okay? Because otherwise you will not have me back.

  640. It's all right. But I need to end by reminding you that God has you, has all of us here as advent

  641. people to be adventurous in this world. Let the sick find comfort and care within the context of the

  642. church. Let those who are seeking justice, let those who are seeking justice find it

  643. within our fellowship, within our adventurous initiatives. Let those who are in need of peace

  644. find us as channels of peace.

  645. But you know, some of us, we do not want to experience the adventure of advent.

  646. When God said to Moses, I'm going to send you back to Egypt,

  647. you're going to be there at vent. Be adventurous among your people. Redeem them. Bring them out of

  648. Egypt. What did Moses say? I don't speak too well, you know. I don't think I'm the right person.

  649. God said, I'm not having it, Moses. I'll give you a one. You go in anyhow.

  650. In terms of Isaiah, Isaiah had a message to be adventurous. In the temple, a glorious temple like

  651. yours, he saw what he couldn't believe. God seated on the throne. Things were majestic.

  652. And all of a sudden, you know what he said? Oh, I sit among people whose lips are unclean. I myself,

  653. my lips are unclean. In other words, I'm not going anywhere with this message. God said,

  654. I'm not having it, it's Isaiah. God used a cherubim to actually burn the unclipped, to remove,

  655. to declutter the space that his heart was holding things that were not of him. And all of a sudden,

  656. the lips, the heart of Isaiah was ready to go. And what did he say? When God, the council of heaven

  657. said, whom shall I send? What did he say? Here I am, Lord. Send me. At the end of Jesus' ministry,

  658. he called the disciples in Galilee, said to them, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them

  659. in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And behold, I am with you always to

  660. the end of the age. They all, and Christ ascended. They all stood up there, gazing. An angel of the

  661. Lord turned up and said, guys, you can't be standing up here gazing. There is work for you in the valley.

  662. Get going. Sometimes as adventurous people, we need a push. We need Christ to come back again and again

  663. and again and again to remind us of the significance of Advent. The defining moment we have experienced,

  664. the adventurous reality we need to engage in. Maybe I'm here to remind you of what you are doing.

  665. You know what it is. Continue to be adventurous in this community, in this church.

  666. I, in ending, I remember having heard a preacher give, it's an illustration of someone struggling

  667. to know what to do because the situation was such that he couldn't see any defining moment and he didn't

  668. know what to do. He had a small business, it was a hardware business and the business was

  669. doing well as a church person, a church leader. And all of a sudden, someone from somewhere turned

  670. up and said, well, I need to buy your business because my future is really shaky unless I have

  671. something, a private business to go with. But the man said, no, I cannot sell you my business. This is

  672. my livelihood. He said, I hear what you're saying. He offered as much money as possible. The man said,

  673. no. So what the rich man did was to buy a property next to that lovely guy, lovely guy's business and

  674. then he established another hardware there. Sophisticated. You can't buy online. Everything

  675. was doing well. Three months later, he bought another property next on the right side of that

  676. building. And imagine what's going on now. The building of the lovely child of God was going down

  677. and down and down and down. He get to a point where he said, Lord, why am I in this faith? I can't feed

  678. my children. Things are getting tough. I need a breakthrough right now. I need to hear from you.

  679. And said, okay, you will experience an Advent moment, a defining moment. And when you experience

  680. that, be adventurous in your business. You got a revelation from God now. Let me see if I can picture

  681. it that way. Remember, there is a hardware on the left side, yeah? There is another hardware on the right

  682. side and all, both of them are doing well. And the lovely man of God, he's at where we're in the middle,

  683. was in the middle. Things were really a bit dark there. He got a revelation from God to say,

  684. on top of your building there, put main entrance.

  685. So over here, he put main entrance and he painted the building, his own building, in the same color

  686. with the other two. Are you there with me? His defining moment came and he said to the Lord,

  687. God, now maybe I was a bit stingy with you. I'll give you more of my time, more of my money,

  688. more of my resources, more of my expertise, more of my knowledge, the riches of God in me.

  689. I'm prepared to share because I need to be more adventurous. You have established for me

  690. a defining moment. What was the moment about? Can we say it together? Main entrance, your life,

  691. may it be the main entrance for Jesus' intervention. Amen.
