  1. In Matthew chapter 2 and verse 11, we read these words,

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  2. Then they, the wise men, opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

  3. I suspect with many of you, I have a kind of unease about the way we celebrate Christmas.

  4. Just the idea of our shops being decorated from mid-November and then, of course, followed by the sales.

  5. Would make it seem, I think, if a Martian were to land on earth, that this is just one massive celebration of materialism, of things.

  6. I look in my own family's homes, my grandchildren, and the absolute piles of presents under the Christmas tree, and I shudder a little bit.

  7. I see children who are overexcited, and that's part of the joy of Christmas in a way, isn't it?

  8. Ripping into their presents, so carefully wrapped, but ultimately bored with much of what they've received unless it can be played on a screen.

  9. I admired the man on the radio chat show I heard about this year, who told us, and was slightly esconced,

  10. that his wife was very upset when she unwrapped her gift and found it was a dishcloth.

  11. And then he said, actually, that was a joke, he said, and he presented her with a large box, which was beautifully wrapped.

  12. We all thought this was going to have a nice ending, this story, until we discovered that in the big box there was a hoover.

  13. I'm rather in favour of the Icelandic tradition at Christmas, where on Christmas Eve, a gift is exchanged, one gift, and it's usually a book, and it's given on Christmas Eve.

  14. I know that would be hugely unpopular, and I'm not seriously suggesting it, but there is something about that that appeals to me.

  15. The story of the wise men, the magi, as we call them, comes from a Greek word, magoi, which means wise,

  16. is a fascinating addition to the birth narratives.

  17. And only Matthew, in his Gospel, records this particular story.

  18. You will note that history and the Church have added details to that story, which actually don't exist in the original text.

  19. I'm always vaguely amused by we three kings of Orient are.

  20. I mean, firstly, because we have no idea how many wise men there were.

  21. We assume there were three, because there were three gifts.

  22. But we haven't got a clue.

  23. There could have been a football team of wise men, as far as we know.

  24. And the likelihood that they came from the Orient is very unlikely.

  25. Much more likely they came from the ancient Middle East, places like Iraq or Iran or Syria or places like that.

  26. Even as far afield as Yemen, one scholar says.

  27. And of course, and this is where I take issue with the scholars,

  28. a good many modern scholars think that this event never took place at all.

  29. It's just a bit of made-up history.

  30. I have to say that I cannot believe that myself.

  31. As far as I'm concerned, whatever happened, three kings or a football team of kings coming from wherever,

  32. I believe in my head and in my heart this story to be a historical story.

  33. And a number of things strike me about this story very immediately.

  34. Firstly, the courage of these wise men.

  35. Not only was making a long journey in those times a highly difficult and dangerous thing to do.

  36. But then they had to confront Herod and his wily scheme to use the wise men to find the baby Jesus.

  37. He lied through his teeth when he said, so I could go and worship him.

  38. What he really meant was, so I could go and kill him.

  39. He was threatened by anybody who might be a threat to his kingship.

  40. The wise men decided that they would sidestep Herod and didn't go back to him and tell him where they found the Christ child.

  41. Their commitment strikes me.

  42. Many of us, I think, are too easily put off owning our own faith.

  43. And they were not put off from their journey to find the Christ child, to follow the star.

  44. Their kindness, they brought gifts.

  45. And the consequences of them meeting the Christ child.

  46. It is thought by many scholars that these wise men were astrologers.

  47. You know, the kind of people who write stuff in newspapers telling you what your future might look like.

  48. In other words, they might have been of extremely spurious theological background.

  49. And yet, the consequence of coming and seeing a baby in a stable was that they bowed down and they worshipped him and they offered their gifts.

  50. And that's what I want to talk to you about this morning.

  51. I want to talk to you about the offering of gifts.

  52. And before you put your hand in the pocket and hope that you left your wallet at home, I'm not talking about money.

  53. I want to talk to you about the reality that God has given to you, if you are a believer in Christ, charismata.

  54. Where our word charismatic comes from.

  55. Charismata means gifts of grace.

  56. Every believer is given these gifts of grace.

  57. It doesn't matter how young you are or how old you are.

  58. God has given you these gifts.

  59. And I need to say that at the beginning of this new year,

  60. the way that we're meant to offer our gifts will make a huge difference to your life as a Christian,

  61. will make a huge difference to the life of this church,

  62. and ultimately will make a huge difference to the wider community of Clevedon.

  63. But before I talk to you directly about the gifts,

  64. just one or two more introductory comments, if I may.

  65. If you are a Christian, and I need to say that I never take it for granted

  66. that people sitting in front of me in a church building are truly Christian.

  67. I never take that for granted.

  68. Funnily enough, as somebody who worked in the Church of England for 40-odd years,

  69. I've never taken it for granted in the Church of England

  70. that the people sitting in front of me are actually genuine believers.

  71. It's a bit like Billy Graham said once,

  72. that going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more

  73. than going into a garage makes you a car.

  74. Because it's about a personal relationship with God.

  75. It's about knowing that your sins are forgiven.

  76. It's about being assured that when you die,

  77. you will not hit a brick wall,

  78. but you will go through a gateway into a state of existence called heaven.

  79. A lot of confusion about what happens to Christians when they die.

  80. I dare say that confusion is represented in this church,

  81. and it would be another sermon for me to explain to you exactly what happens.

  82. There's some really strange ideas,

  83. and I don't want to go into them right now,

  84. but listen, you can have assurance.

  85. If you have a relationship with Jesus,

  86. know your sins are forgiven,

  87. you can have an assurance that when you die,

  88. you will receive eternal life.

  89. The Apostle John,

  90. writing in his first epistle at the end of the Bible,

  91. says that,

  92. these things,

  93. meaning these things I have written,

  94. these things I have written,

  95. said John,

  96. are written that you may know

  97. that you may have eternal life.

  98. Not that you may keep your fingers crossed

  99. and wildly hope that you might have a place in heaven,

  100. but that you may know.

  101. Friend, if you have no assurance

  102. that you will go to heaven when you die,

  103. I want to reassure you

  104. that if you trust Jesus Christ,

  105. you will be accepted into heaven.

  106. That's the amazing thing about grace.

  107. It's God's gifting to us,

  108. even though we don't necessarily deserve it.

  109. The second thing about gifts

  110. is that they can be natural gifts.

  111. Some of you are great musicians.

  112. Some of you, no doubt,

  113. were great sportsmen.

  114. Looking at you a few years ago now,

  115. let's admit it.

  116. A lot of you are great hosts and hostesses.

  117. A lot of you have a lot of natural gifts.

  118. Are those natural gifts,

  119. spiritual gifts?

  120. Well, they are

  121. when you hallow those gifts

  122. to serving Jesus through them.

  123. When I was a young fellow

  124. and trying to witness

  125. to my non-Christian friends

  126. up in the north of England,

  127. it amazed me

  128. how often they would say

  129. Christianity,

  130. I can't use the word

  131. that they actually describe,

  132. but basically it means

  133. Christianity is for wimps.

  134. Fellows up north

  135. believed then

  136. that nobody who was a man,

  137. a real man,

  138. would ever

  139. give their life to Jesus Christ.

  140. They talk about crutches.

  141. Well, I can tell you

  142. there are times in your life

  143. when you'd be very grateful

  144. for a crutch.

  145. And now I see

  146. the embodiment

  147. of kind of

  148. 1970s macho man,

  149. our premiership footballers.

  150. How many of them

  151. are people of faith?

  152. I mean,

  153. I have no idea

  154. whether that's genuine faith.

  155. I have no idea

  156. what it would be like

  157. to be a Christian

  158. and earn 350 grand a week.

  159. Though I wouldn't mind

  160. the opportunity

  161. of trying to find out.

  162. Look,

  163. here's the thing.

  164. God has given you

  165. these spiritual gifts.

  166. They may be natural gifts.

  167. I had a man

  168. in a congregation

  169. in which I worked

  170. who was a very good pianist

  171. and purely

  172. before he became a Christian

  173. played it for his own enjoyment

  174. and for the entertainment

  175. of others.

  176. There's nothing he loved

  177. more than applause.

  178. I don't want to say

  179. there's anything wrong with that

  180. but when he became a Christian

  181. he hallowed this gift to God.

  182. He offered it to God

  183. and said,

  184. use me.

  185. Funnily enough,

  186. he became a bishop

  187. in the Church of England

  188. and did a wonderful

  189. evening of testimony

  190. where he played music

  191. throughout the whole

  192. of his life.

  193. He was actually

  194. a trained concert pianist

  195. and it was a very,

  196. very poignant evening

  197. for him to play his music

  198. but talk about

  199. the way he had

  200. become a Christian.

  201. We have music

  202. from the Beatles

  203. and we have music

  204. from Rachmaninoff,

  205. whoever he was.

  206. So it could be

  207. a natural gift.

  208. The most important thing is

  209. you need to discover

  210. what your spiritual gifts are.

  211. And a lot of Christians

  212. are very frustrated

  213. with their walk with God

  214. because they don't know

  215. what their spiritual gifting is.

  216. Some of you

  217. will be very frustrated.

  218. Some of you will be here

  219. because church going

  220. is actually a Sunday habit

  221. for you

  222. rather than you come

  223. to the reality

  224. of the risen Christ

  225. who died for you

  226. and forgave your sins

  227. and you want to come

  228. like those wise men of old

  229. and worship him.

  230. I made a comment

  231. at the beginning

  232. of the service

  233. about singing carols.

  234. I should never have said that.

  235. We haven't come here

  236. to sing songs.

  237. If you want to do that,

  238. you can go down

  239. to the football.

  240. We've come here

  241. to worship

  242. the living God.

  243. Someone say amen.

  244. Someone say hallelujah.

  245. Hallelujah.

  246. And look,

  247. these spiritual gifts

  248. have three primary directions.

  249. Firstly,

  250. our spiritual gifts

  251. are given

  252. that we might glorify

  253. God ourselves.

  254. that we might bring

  255. honor to him

  256. through the exercise

  257. of those spiritual gifts.

  258. The thing about

  259. spiritual gifts

  260. is they are never

  261. about drawing attention

  262. to yourself.

  263. I've been in a load

  264. of churches

  265. in my life.

  266. That was my ministry

  267. in a way.

  268. Every week,

  269. a different church.

  270. And I have to say,

  271. I veered on the edge

  272. of being a little judgmental

  273. when I saw some people

  274. in the music group

  275. who it seemed

  276. to be more about them

  277. than it did seem

  278. to be about God.

  279. No,

  280. spiritual gifts

  281. are given

  282. to glorify God,

  283. to bring honor

  284. to him.

  285. Secondly,

  286. to edify the church.

  287. I want you to

  288. imagine

  289. for a moment,

  290. and it would

  291. take imagination,

  292. that we were

  293. in churches

  294. where people

  295. who undertook

  296. ministries

  297. were gifted

  298. to undertake

  299. those ministries.

  300. I want to say,

  301. I think this is,

  302. in my view,

  303. I would give

  304. Christchurch

  305. a pretty good score

  306. on that.

  307. I think we have

  308. people who undertake

  309. ministries

  310. who are really gifted

  311. to take them.

  312. I thank God

  313. for our youth work

  314. and for our work

  315. with children.

  316. I thank God

  317. for my colleague

  318. minister,

  319. who I think

  320. attempts week by week

  321. to preach

  322. the living word

  323. to you.

  324. I'm grateful

  325. for those

  326. who have the gift

  327. of hosting

  328. and provide us

  329. with coffee

  330. and all that.

  331. I'm very grateful

  332. for that.

  333. And I think

  334. as a church,

  335. we might score

  336. well,

  337. were there ever

  338. to be a competition,

  339. and there never

  340. will be.

  341. The third reason

  342. God has given us

  343. two spiritual gifts,

  344. one is to glorify

  345. himself,

  346. two is to serve

  347. the church,

  348. that the church

  349. might be

  350. what the church

  351. is meant to be.

  352. And the third thing

  353. is that some

  354. of those gifts

  355. need to be given

  356. to serve the world.

  357. when I

  358. look around

  359. our town,

  360. I think we have

  361. a huge assignment.

  362. And the huge

  363. assignment is

  364. how are we going

  365. to re-evangelize

  366. this town?

  367. And I want

  368. people who are

  369. gifted in evangelism

  370. to play their

  371. part in that.

  372. Billy Graham

  373. once said that

  374. we don't all

  375. have the gift

  376. of evangelism,

  377. so most of you

  378. can relax.

  379. But he did say

  380. we're all called

  381. to be witnesses.

  382. That is,

  383. to take responsibility

  384. in your walk

  385. with God

  386. that some people

  387. will make their

  388. minds up about

  389. God on the basis

  390. of what they see

  391. in your life.

  392. Can you imagine

  393. that?

  394. Can you imagine

  395. if you took

  396. that responsibility

  397. seriously

  398. how the world

  399. would be a

  400. different place?

  401. But I want

  402. Christians with

  403. gifts of leadership

  404. to get in

  405. prominent positions

  406. in commerce

  407. and in charities

  408. and in organisations

  409. that the church,

  410. that the world

  411. might be served

  412. better.

  413. God has promised

  414. these gifts

  415. and right now

  416. don't let the

  417. devil or your

  418. sense of low

  419. self-esteem

  420. start to say

  421. to you,

  422. oh, he couldn't

  423. use me.

  424. Oh, poor little me.

  425. I'm too old.

  426. I'm too young.

  427. You know,

  428. it's interesting,

  429. isn't it,

  430. that many of those

  431. great prophets

  432. of old,

  433. when God called

  434. them to a life

  435. of prophecy,

  436. what was their

  437. first response?

  438. Jeremiah,

  439. Jeremiah,

  440. I'm too young.

  441. God said,

  442. and here I

  443. paraphrase the

  444. Bible,

  445. God said to

  446. Jeremiah,

  447. get over it.

  448. When God

  449. called Moses,

  450. Moses said,

  451. you know what,

  452. I'm not a great

  453. leader,

  454. I don't want to

  455. do this.

  456. So God gave him

  457. Aaron,

  458. who admittedly

  459. was a mixed

  460. blessing,

  461. but nevertheless

  462. they got through.

  463. When God

  464. called Ezekiel,

  465. Ezekiel said,

  466. I'm a man

  467. of unclean

  468. lips.

  469. And God

  470. metaphorically

  471. touched his

  472. lips with

  473. burning coal

  474. and set him

  475. free to do

  476. his weird

  477. stuff.

  478. love.

  479. So,

  480. you have

  481. these gifts

  482. if you're

  483. a believer.

  484. And the

  485. great shame

  486. is the

  487. shame

  488. of an

  489. unopened

  490. gift.

  491. Of a gift

  492. that you may

  493. have that you

  494. choose not

  495. to offer.

  496. father.

  497. And you

  498. sit in

  499. church

  500. week by

  501. week

  502. with a

  503. faith in

  504. your heart

  505. wondering,

  506. why is my

  507. walk with

  508. God not

  509. more

  510. stimulating?

  511. Why is it

  512. not more

  513. exciting?

  514. How many

  515. gifts do

  516. you have?

  517. Well,

  518. I can't

  519. answer that

  520. for each

  521. one of you

  522. individually.

  523. And I do

  524. want to say

  525. when I tell

  526. you this,

  527. I did not

  528. go to

  529. Mount Sinai

  530. and come

  531. down with

  532. this.

  533. But in

  534. my experience,

  535. most people

  536. have three

  537. primary

  538. spiritual

  539. gift

  540. areas.

  541. I once

  542. sat with

  543. a group

  544. of mega

  545. church

  546. leaders in

  547. the USA.

  548. Goodness

  549. knows how

  550. a minnow

  551. like me

  552. ended up

  553. with them.

  554. And the

  555. purpose of

  556. the day

  557. with these

  558. great leaders,

  559. people like

  560. Rick Warren

  561. and Bill

  562. Hybels

  563. and Stuart

  564. Briscoe,

  565. the purpose

  566. of the day

  567. was for us

  568. to have an

  569. honest discussion

  570. with each

  571. other and

  572. tell each

  573. other in

  574. the end

  575. of the day

  576. what did

  577. we think

  578. each other's

  579. spiritual gifts

  580. would be.

  581. It started

  582. out that we

  583. filled in this

  584. kind of matrix

  585. of questions

  586. and we filled

  587. that in and

  588. then they

  589. were distributed

  590. and then we

  591. prayed for an

  592. hour.

  593. It was an

  594. amazing day.

  595. thing.

  596. And at the

  597. end of it

  598. I was told

  599. very clearly

  600. what my

  601. three primary

  602. gift areas

  603. were.

  604. It completely

  605. reshaped the

  606. way I thought

  607. about my

  608. ministry.

  609. And I think

  610. if you knew

  611. what your

  612. spiritual gifts

  613. were,

  614. it would

  615. reshape

  616. your life

  617. and your

  618. walk with

  619. God.

  620. So I

  621. would say

  622. most people

  623. have three

  624. spiritual gifts

  625. and then

  626. you come

  627. across these

  628. people who

  629. have far

  630. more than

  631. three spiritual

  632. gifts and

  633. you pray for

  634. the grace

  635. from God

  636. not to hate

  637. them.

  638. and they

  639. are

  640. world

  641. changes.

  642. So how

  643. will I

  644. know my

  645. gifts?

  646. That's a

  647. great question

  648. and here

  649. I have to

  650. say there

  651. is a major

  652. problem

  653. which besets

  654. us human

  655. beings.

  656. And the

  657. problem is

  658. what

  659. psychologists

  660. call delusion.

  661. That we

  662. can think

  663. we're really

  664. good at

  665. stuff that

  666. nobody else

  667. on planet

  668. earth thinks

  669. we are good

  670. at.

  671. And that's

  672. why it's

  673. really important

  674. I think

  675. that we need

  676. to check out

  677. with people

  678. who spiritual

  679. counsel we

  680. respect and

  681. who love us

  682. enough to tell

  683. us the truth.

  684. We need

  685. to check

  686. out whether

  687. or not our

  688. inclination that

  689. we are a

  690. future opera

  691. star or

  692. whatever has

  693. actually got

  694. any basis in

  695. reality.

  696. Maybe a

  697. talk with a

  698. minister from

  699. the church

  700. maybe and

  701. this is a

  702. great way of

  703. discovering your

  704. spiritual gifts

  705. join a home

  706. group.

  707. A home

  708. group which is

  709. small enough for

  710. you to build

  711. relationships of

  712. honesty and

  713. integrity with

  714. one another

  715. where there

  716. can be an

  717. exchange of

  718. feedback which

  719. is vital in

  720. helping us

  721. discover our

  722. spiritual gifts.

  723. gifts.

  724. And if like me

  725. you're a

  726. senior I

  727. just want to

  728. say one

  729. thing to you

  730. in relation to

  731. this issue of

  732. spiritual gifts.

  733. God is not

  734. finished with you

  735. yet.

  736. God is not

  737. finished with you

  738. yet.

  739. Go home

  740. stand in front of

  741. a mirror

  742. say to

  743. God you're

  744. not finished

  745. with me

  746. yet.

  747. There's this

  748. thing in

  749. churches isn't

  750. there the

  751. 80-20

  752. thing.

  753. You know

  754. 80% of

  755. the people

  756. sit there

  757. passively

  758. sometimes

  759. aggressively

  760. week in

  761. week out

  762. who haven't

  763. got a clue

  764. what their

  765. ministry is.

  766. And then on

  767. the other

  768. side of the

  769. church there

  770. are ministers

  771. with the

  772. Colgate ring

  773. of confidence

  774. around their

  775. necks who

  776. think that

  777. their job

  778. is to get

  779. you to help

  780. them with

  781. their ministry

  782. whereas I

  783. have always

  784. thought that

  785. my job was

  786. to help you

  787. with your

  788. ministry to

  789. discover it

  790. and to

  791. offer it.

  792. Imagine

  793. a church

  794. where ministries

  795. were undertaken

  796. by people who

  797. were gifted to

  798. undertake them.

  799. Cherish the

  800. church where

  801. the ministers

  802. understand that

  803. their ministry

  804. is in part

  805. to help you

  806. discover your

  807. ministry.

  808. All right

  809. well you're

  810. sitting there

  811. and you say

  812. well what will

  813. this do for

  814. me?

  815. You know

  816. I'm already

  817. I've already

  818. got enough

  819. to do

  820. you know

  821. I got my

  822. daytime television

  823. I got

  824. you know

  825. mindless stuff

  826. to watch

  827. and do.

  828. Listen

  829. if you

  830. set yourself

  831. to discover

  832. your spiritual

  833. gifts and

  834. you offer

  835. them.

  836. You will

  837. have a renewed

  838. sense of

  839. fulfillment

  840. you will

  841. have a new

  842. excitement in

  843. your faith

  844. and you

  845. will have a

  846. new impact

  847. with the

  848. ministries of

  849. this church.

  850. We stand

  851. at the

  852. threshold

  853. of a new

  854. year.

  855. a year

  856. which is

  857. full of

  858. anxieties

  859. and worries.

  860. I hesitate

  861. to say

  862. that I've

  863. read anybody

  864. who can

  865. tell you

  866. what the

  867. end of

  868. 2025 is

  869. going to

  870. look like

  871. in the

  872. world

  873. in our

  874. local

  875. in our

  876. country

  877. in our

  878. local

  879. community.

  880. Nobody

  881. it seems

  882. can work

  883. out what

  884. is going

  885. to happen.

  886. Whilst

  887. we kind

  888. of worry

  889. about the

  890. way the

  891. world is

  892. going,

  893. whilst we

  894. worry about

  895. that,

  896. I want to

  897. say to

  898. you,

  899. I think

  900. that in

  901. the whole

  902. of my

  903. ministry

  904. I've never

  905. felt that

  906. the opportunity

  907. for the

  908. gospel is

  909. greater

  910. than it

  911. is now.

  912. There are

  913. amazing

  914. things happening

  915. in our

  916. culture which

  917. maybe many

  918. of you are

  919. unaware of.

  920. The death

  921. of the new

  922. atheist movement,

  923. very well

  924. charted now

  925. in social

  926. media and

  927. in serious

  928. academic

  929. circles.

  930. else.

  931. I've never

  932. felt that

  933. opportunity

  934. more and

  935. I want to

  936. give myself

  937. afresh to

  938. it.

  939. And I

  940. wonder

  941. who amongst

  942. you will

  943. join me?

  944. Who of

  945. you on

  946. this first

  947. Sunday of

  948. 2025

  949. will say

  950. I'm going

  951. to get

  952. serious about

  953. my spiritual

  954. gifting.

  955. For those

  956. of you who

  957. don't know

  958. what it

  959. is you

  960. need to

  961. say I'm

  962. going to

  963. discover what

  964. those gifts

  965. are.

  966. They're not

  967. all spooky

  968. things.

  969. If you

  970. turn in

  971. your Bible

  972. when you

  973. get home

  974. turn to

  975. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  976. chapter 12

  977. this is an

  978. amazing passage

  979. of scripture.

  980. You get the

  981. same kind of

  982. thing in

  983. Romans chapter

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  984. 12.

  985. It's as if

  986. the Holy

  987. Spirit made

  988. it easy for

  989. us by saying

  990. you've got to

  991. remember chapter

  992. 12.

  993. Now to

  994. each one

  995. the manifestation

  996. of the

  997. Spirit is

  998. given for

  999. the common

  1000. good.

  1001. Amen.

  1002. To one

  1003. is given

  1004. through the

  1005. Spirit the

  1006. message of

  1007. wisdom to

  1008. another the

  1009. message of

  1010. knowledge by

  1011. means of

  1012. the same

  1013. Spirit.

  1014. It goes

  1015. on.

  1016. Some of

  1017. those gifts

  1018. are going to

  1019. spook some

  1020. of you and

  1021. it may well

  1022. be that some

  1023. of the gifts

  1024. that spook you

  1025. today will be

  1026. your gift

  1027. tomorrow.

  1028. I don't

  1029. know about

  1030. you but the

  1031. first time I

  1032. heard anybody

  1033. speak in

  1034. tongues I'm

  1035. like show

  1036. me the

  1037. door.

  1038. I got a

  1039. little impatient

  1040. with prophecy

  1041. where basically

  1042. the strap line

  1043. of the prophecy

  1044. was God

  1045. says you

  1046. scratch my

  1047. back and

  1048. I'll scratch

  1049. yours.

  1050. I compared

  1051. it to those

  1052. prophecies of

  1053. old where

  1054. people like

  1055. Ezekiel

  1056. had to say

  1057. to the people

  1058. of God the

  1059. glory of the

  1060. Lord has

  1061. departed from

  1062. your temple.

  1063. I don't

  1064. think prophecy

  1065. is about

  1066. just saying

  1067. what we want

  1068. to hear.

  1069. It's about

  1070. saying what

  1071. we don't

  1072. want to

  1073. hear.

  1074. when I

  1075. was a

  1076. young

  1077. minister

  1078. family

  1079. services

  1080. were just

  1081. coming onto

  1082. the agenda

  1083. for churches.

  1084. Because I

  1085. was young

  1086. it was

  1087. assumed

  1088. that I

  1089. would be

  1090. great at

  1091. family

  1092. services.

  1093. And so I

  1094. tried to

  1095. teach myself

  1096. a few skills

  1097. to do that.

  1098. I mean I

  1099. love the way

  1100. in this

  1101. church

  1102. Ross could

  1103. use his

  1104. magic gifts

  1105. to occupy

  1106. I mean not

  1107. just children

  1108. I love

  1109. them but

  1110. you know

  1111. good thing

  1112. to do.

  1113. And make

  1114. a great

  1115. kind of

  1116. teaching

  1117. point out

  1118. of that.

  1119. But one

  1120. of the

  1121. things I

  1122. devised

  1123. it was

  1124. actually a

  1125. stolen

  1126. idea

  1127. and I

  1128. stole it

  1129. from the

  1130. guy who

  1131. was at

  1132. St.

  1133. George's

  1134. in Leeds.

  1135. And to

  1136. make the

  1137. point about

  1138. the importance

  1139. of you

  1140. knowing your

  1141. gifts and

  1142. offering them

  1143. I made

  1144. a giant

  1145. jigsaw.

  1146. I get

  1147. the kids

  1148. to come

  1149. up and

  1150. help me

  1151. put the

  1152. pieces

  1153. together.

  1154. What the

  1155. kids didn't

  1156. know was

  1157. there was

  1158. a piece

  1159. missing

  1160. right in

  1161. the center

  1162. of the

  1163. jigsaw.

  1164. At the

  1165. end of it

  1166. I had the

  1167. kids hunting

  1168. around the

  1169. church for

  1170. the missing

  1171. piece.

  1172. I had it

  1173. hidden under

  1174. the altar

  1175. cloth on

  1176. the Lord's

  1177. table.

  1178. And at

  1179. the end

  1180. of it

  1181. to make

  1182. myself a

  1183. hero I

  1184. pulled out

  1185. the piece

  1186. and I

  1187. put it

  1188. there.

  1189. My

  1190. message was

  1191. this.

  1192. If you

  1193. don't know

  1194. your spiritual

  1195. gifts,

  1196. if you

  1197. don't like

  1198. those wise

  1199. men of

  1200. old come

  1201. and offer

  1202. them,

  1203. sadly the

  1204. church is

  1205. always going

  1206. to have a

  1207. missing piece

  1208. in the

  1209. jigsaw of

  1210. its

  1211. ministry.

  1212. who,

  1213. who will

  1214. bring their

  1215. gifts and

  1216. offer them?

  1217. The wise

  1218. men followed

  1219. the star

  1220. and the

  1221. wise today

  1222. will follow

  1223. that same

  1224. star and

  1225. discover that

  1226. same Christ

  1227. child and

  1228. discover a

  1229. new way of

  1230. living through

  1231. him and

  1232. in him.

  1233. The wise

  1234. men came,

  1235. they opened

  1236. their treasures

  1237. and they

  1238. offered their

  1239. gifts.

  1240. In the

  1241. end,

  1242. it's down

  1243. to you.

  1244. In the name

  1245. of God,

  1246. Father,

  1247. Son,

  1248. and Holy

  1249. Spirit,

  1250. the people

  1251. who agreed,

  1252. said together,

  1253. Amen.

  1254. they

  1255. get

  1256. out
