  1. A friend was recently telling me about a holiday that they'd taken in Los Angeles.

  2. There's one thing in particular that fascinated me, and indeed fascinated them, that was a highlight,

  3. and that was a lift that they'd had in a car.

  4. Several times, they summoned this lift with an app on their phone.

  5. They got in the car, they went to their destination, they paid via the app, and then they got out.

  6. You might think, what's so unusual about that?

  7. Well, it was the actual nature of the car itself.

  8. It wasn't a taxi, it wasn't an Uber, it was what they call a robo-taxi.

  9. It didn't have a driver.

  10. And they described how this, they called AVs, autonomous vehicles,

  11. how this empty car drove up, sure enough, as ordered, and then they got in.

  12. Didn't quite know whether they were going to say hello to anybody, but they drove off,

  13. and then they watched on the phone as this car took them to different places.

  14. It stopped when it needed to, it started when it needed to, it slowed down, it sped up,

  15. and all the while the steering wheel is just turning by itself.

  16. And then eventually, they got out.

  17. Now, if you're thinking that, well, that's in America, we're safe here.

  18. May last year, there was a law passed in the UK Parliament,

  19. the automated vehicle law, an act, sorry, passed in May 2024,

  20. and these things are expected to be on the UK streets in 2026.

  21. Now, we might have mixed feelings about this,

  22. but those that argue in favour of driverless cars

  23. say that there's a sense in which they are much, much safer.

  24. Why? Well, because you don't have the human error behind the wheel.

  25. Because these things are controlled by computers,

  26. then assuming that the computers themselves don't have any human error in them,

  27. and that, I guess, is the point.

  28. But these things are consistent.

  29. They don't get tired.

  30. They're not distracted.

  31. They don't get emotionally engaged in the driving experience.

  32. I want you to imagine your life as a journey in a car.

  33. As followers of Jesus, we're called to entrust our lives to God completely.

  34. Staying with that image of life as a journey in a car,

  35. which would you prefer, honestly?

  36. To be driven by a machine, a robot,

  37. that's completely consistent,

  38. free of human error?

  39. Or would you rather that there be a person behind the wheel

  40. that's taking you through your life?

  41. We are called to entrust our lives to God.

  42. When we talk about entrusting our lives in him,

  43. we are talking about the one who is unique,

  44. in that he is perfect.

  45. Perfectly free from human error.

  46. He's not going to get tired.

  47. He's not going to get distracted.

  48. But he's not a machine.

  49. He's also perfectly personal.

  50. God is perfectly faithful.

  51. And only God is perfectly faithful.

  52. And as we begin this series,

  53. thinking about what we mean by that word,

  54. faithful,

  55. faithful,

  56. it's helpful to begin by what we mean by God's faithfulness to God's own self,

  57. to his own being,

  58. his own character.

  59. See,

  60. God,

  61. and only God,

  62. is completely,

  63. perfectly,

  64. absolutely faithful and consistent to his own character,

  65. to his promises,

  66. to his word,

  67. to his glory.

  68. And that's important.

  69. Because if we understand that,

  70. then we can understand the nature of what we mean by faithfulness,

  71. as we come to apply that in our own lives.

  72. So let's just unpack that a little bit more,

  73. over these next few minutes,

  74. as we dip into this story,

  75. from the book of Exodus.

  76. Let's just recap the background leading up to this moment in the story.

  77. The people of God have been held in captivity in Egypt.

  78. God will not see his people suffer any longer.

  79. And so under the leadership of Moses,

  80. those people leave Egypt.

  81. Miraculously,

  82. God opens the way for them to go.

  83. They are pursued by the Egyptian army.

  84. They want to bring them back as slaves,

  85. or kill them.

  86. But they're pursued by them.

  87. But when the people are caught between the army that is chasing after them,

  88. and the sea,

  89. God miraculously parts the waters,

  90. and they can travel through to safe land.

  91. As the army are pursuing them,

  92. then the waters close.

  93. The enemy is stopped.

  94. But God,

  95. having landed them safe on the other side of the water,

  96. doesn't leave them to it there.

  97. He says,

  98. I will be with you.

  99. I will feed you.

  100. I will take care of you.

  101. It only begins here.

  102. I lead you into freedom.

  103. And so he gives them the law

  104. in order to protect them.

  105. And to say,

  106. I'm with you.

  107. I'm not going to abandon you now I've set you free.

  108. I'm always with you.

  109. And as that law is given,

  110. Moses,

  111. their leader,

  112. is taken up onto the mountain,

  113. and he receives what we refer to as the Ten Commandments.

  114. They're written on tablets of stone.

  115. He's up on that mountaintop for quite a while.

  116. And while he was up there,

  117. the people of God,

  118. who have been set free and protected and saved

  119. and gone through all of this,

  120. now decide

  121. that in fact they're going to build another God

  122. and worship that instead.

  123. So they have a bit of a whip round.

  124. They take out their gold.

  125. They throw it in together.

  126. They melt it together.

  127. And they craft a golden calf.

  128. And they start to circle around this thing

  129. and bow down and worship it.

  130. Moses comes down from the mountain,

  131. sees what's going on,

  132. and throws the Ten Commandments written on the stone,

  133. throws them down in his anger,

  134. and they smash.

  135. It's a sober reminder

  136. of how very quickly

  137. we can forget about the glory of God.

  138. These people had been through all of that,

  139. and yet it only seems to take

  140. a very short period

  141. to be able to turn your back on God

  142. and forget all about him.

  143. It's a story that is there within our scriptures

  144. to remind us in our own humanity

  145. of how easy it is to do that

  146. as human beings.

  147. And it is there to remind us

  148. of the stark contrast that exists

  149. between the faithfulness of God

  150. and the faithlessness of human beings.

  151. You see, if people can be so quick

  152. so quick to forget about

  153. how good and faithful God is,

  154. in that situation,

  155. how much more easy is it for us

  156. in our own lives

  157. to forget about God

  158. and to turn our back on him?

  159. But you know this story

  160. is it holds up the contrasts.

  161. Yes, it's about our own human faithlessness,

  162. but it is about

  163. as much God's faithfulness

  164. to these people.

  165. because what we see

  166. and as that contrast is held before us

  167. is God does not give up on them then.

  168. Moses is called back up onto the mountain

  169. and God says,

  170. I'm going to write it down again.

  171. I'm going to give you a second copy

  172. of these commands.

  173. And my glory is going to pass over you.

  174. And we have this image

  175. how the presence of God,

  176. we can barely imagine what this is like,

  177. but the presence of God

  178. passes over Moses.

  179. And Moses himself cannot look upon God

  180. because God is so perfectly loving,

  181. so perfectly faithful,

  182. so absolutely holy

  183. that nobody,

  184. no human person

  185. can look on him and live.

  186. This is a theme that is carried

  187. right through the Old Testament.

  188. We see, for example,

  189. the prophet Isaiah

  190. in Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  191. when he has that vision

  192. of the presence of God before him,

  193. but he can't actually see God,

  194. he just sees this bright light

  195. and he sees the heavenly angelic host

  196. and they're winged creatures

  197. and with one set of wings

  198. they're actually covering their eyes

  199. because even the heavenly beings

  200. cannot look upon God

  201. in his holiness

  202. and survive.

  203. I guess all of us

  204. will have different experiences

  205. of encountering God,

  206. God's holiness.

  207. For me,

  208. it was when I was,

  209. the earliest I suppose

  210. the most foundational experience

  211. was when I was 12 years old

  212. and went along with a number

  213. of our youth group

  214. to a Christian gathering

  215. and I'd never experienced

  216. anything like this before

  217. but we went into,

  218. I grew up in a church

  219. that was a very,

  220. very traditional church

  221. which had an organ

  222. and hymns out of a book

  223. and we went along

  224. and we got really bored

  225. every Sunday

  226. and cold every Sunday.

  227. Well,

  228. some things don't change

  229. but hopefully you're not bored

  230. even if we're cold.

  231. And we were taken along

  232. to this meeting,

  233. this gathering

  234. where this Christian speaker

  235. that I'd never heard of before

  236. was speaking

  237. and was told

  238. to expect amazing things

  239. to happen.

  240. I thought,

  241. well,

  242. what amazing thing can happen

  243. when you're sitting together

  244. in what is a church service

  245. that's not in a church

  246. and not on a Sunday.

  247. But anyway,

  248. I went along with it

  249. because all my friends

  250. at the youth group

  251. were going along to it

  252. and we were sat there

  253. and I remember sitting there

  254. in this,

  255. as a 12 year old,

  256. in this hall

  257. and listening to this guy

  258. talk for what seemed like

  259. about 12 hours.

  260. It wasn't.

  261. But I was bored,

  262. senseless.

  263. I couldn't remember what,

  264. I can't remember to this day

  265. anything that he said.

  266. But then afterwards

  267. a music group got together

  268. and they started leading

  269. in a time of worship

  270. and started singing these songs

  271. that I didn't know

  272. but I thought,

  273. these are great,

  274. these are really kind of

  275. really contemporary.

  276. It was the 1980s.

  277. But as people were worshipping,

  278. they started to worship God

  279. in a way that I'd never seen before.

  280. Their arms were going up in the air,

  281. people were weeping,

  282. people were smiling,

  283. happiness.

  284. People didn't seem upset

  285. but people were flowing with tears

  286. and something was going on

  287. and I thought,

  288. what is this?

  289. I'd never experienced

  290. people worship God

  291. in this way,

  292. sort of way before.

  293. So you can imagine

  294. I was really freaked out

  295. when somebody

  296. in a member of our youth group

  297. was standing next to me,

  298. his arms went up in the air

  299. and I thought,

  300. what's happened to him?

  301. And then he turned over,

  302. he turns to me

  303. and he placed his hand

  304. on the top of my head.

  305. And I remember thinking,

  306. whoa, what are you doing?

  307. This is my personal space.

  308. But before I had a chance

  309. to object,

  310. something happened.

  311. And it changed everything for me.

  312. Now I was only 12

  313. but I can remember it now

  314. as clear as day.

  315. Now I don't know,

  316. I can't say this categorically,

  317. but I've got a feeling

  318. I probably wouldn't be

  319. standing here right now

  320. had that not happened.

  321. Because over those next few moments,

  322. I felt this sense

  323. of what I can only describe

  324. as the holy otherness of God

  325. come upon me.

  326. I didn't have the language

  327. to describe it

  328. in those days.

  329. I was 12.

  330. But all of a sudden

  331. I started to well up with tears.

  332. I started to shake.

  333. My heart started to beat

  334. like I'd never experienced.

  335. And I felt something

  336. of the living presence of God.

  337. Which was later explained to me

  338. by our,

  339. I wasn't the only one

  340. this happened to,

  341. this was our whole youth group

  342. suddenly went down.

  343. I suddenly realised

  344. if I didn't sit down

  345. I was literally going to be

  346. blown off my feet.

  347. And over the next few weeks

  348. our youth leaders,

  349. God bless them,

  350. had the challenge

  351. of trying to explain to us

  352. what it means

  353. to experience the Holy Spirit.

  354. But you know,

  355. however,

  356. however we experience it,

  357. for Moses it was

  358. in the cleft of a rock,

  359. maybe in a church on Sunday,

  360. maybe in a home group.

  361. It can be anywhere.

  362. You know,

  363. my old superintendent minister

  364. when I was a probationer

  365. told me that it happened to him

  366. when he was in the bath

  367. one evening.

  368. But it's there for all of us.

  369. Absolutely every one of us.

  370. Now why am I sharing that with you?

  371. Well,

  372. it's because we get

  373. such the wrong idea

  374. of what holiness means.

  375. When we're talking about

  376. the holiness of God,

  377. it's the holy otherness of God.

  378. But it's not a horrid thing,

  379. it's not a bad thing

  380. that casts us aside.

  381. What we are talking about

  382. is this radical otherness

  383. that contrasts so starkly

  384. with our own humanity.

  385. Such that,

  386. in his grace,

  387. God chooses

  388. to allow us

  389. to encounter him.

  390. And such that

  391. when that happens,

  392. that which is so perfectly

  393. faithful

  394. and consistent,

  395. but not like a machine,

  396. like a computer,

  397. in a profoundly,

  398. perfectly personal way,

  399. meets with our humanity

  400. and all of our imperfection

  401. and all of our weakness

  402. and everything that is wrong

  403. with us as humans,

  404. when we meet with that,

  405. we can't stare him in the face

  406. because we go up in a puff of smoke.

  407. But you can still meet with him.

  408. Moses did.

  409. Countless people

  410. throughout history have

  411. and still do today.

  412. And still do today.

  413. God's faithfulness

  414. is perfect.

  415. And his faithfulness

  416. and his holiness

  417. and his perfection,

  418. these are all things

  419. that all converge

  420. when we come to think

  421. of the character

  422. of God.

  423. Ah,

  424. what I hear you say,

  425. how can you talk of God

  426. being so perfect

  427. when you read

  428. these very verses

  429. from Exodus

  430. that we've looked at

  431. this morning?

  432. Let me read them back to you.

  433. I'm referring to verse 7

  434. of chapter 34.

  435. It says,

  436. God does not leave

  437. the guilty unpunished.

  438. He punishes the children

  439. and their children,

  440. their children

  441. for the sin of the parents

  442. to the third

  443. and fourth generation.

  444. Surely,

  445. is that not where God

  446. at best sounds

  447. like a cold

  448. clinical machine

  449. or at worst

  450. like some resentful

  451. unforgiving person?

  452. Well,

  453. I'm not going to pretend

  454. that these verses,

  455. these passages

  456. are easy

  457. and I don't want to

  458. just skate over them

  459. lightly or casually

  460. but I would say

  461. a couple of points.

  462. Firstly,

  463. if we are to read

  464. those verses,

  465. do not read them

  466. without reading first

  467. the verses

  468. that precede them

  469. which say

  470. the compassionate

  471. and gracious God

  472. slow to anger,

  473. abounding in love

  474. and faithfulness,

  475. maintaining love

  476. to thousands

  477. and forgiving wickedness,

  478. rebellion and sin.

  479. That is who God is.

  480. So however we make sense

  481. of themes of justice

  482. and punishment

  483. they must be read

  484. through that lens.

  485. But the second thing

  486. and this is perhaps

  487. more complex

  488. and again

  489. I don't pretend

  490. that it's easy to understand

  491. but in the revelatory

  492. history of God

  493. we need to remember

  494. that the Bible

  495. is not one book

  496. it's a whole library

  497. written over many,

  498. many centuries.

  499. but in that story

  500. that is told

  501. by the time

  502. Jesus is teaching

  503. he says quite something

  504. that makes it quite clear.

  505. Let's look from

  506. look at John chapter 9

    John 9 chapter mention

  507. first three verses

  508. when Jesus encounters

  509. a man who is blind

  510. he makes it quite clear

  511. that generations

  512. are not cursed.

  513. as Jesus went along

  514. he saw a man

  515. blind from birth

  516. his disciples

  517. asked him

  518. Rabbi

  519. who sinned

  520. this man

  521. or his parents

  522. that he was born blind?

  523. Neither this man

  524. nor his parents

  525. sinned

  526. said Jesus

  527. but this happened

  528. so that the works

  529. of God

  530. may be displayed

  531. in him.

  532. so clearly

  533. Jesus is saying

  534. that

  535. we're not talking

  536. about a kind

  537. of lasting curse

  538. but likewise

  539. we need to remember

  540. that there is

  541. the reality of sin

  542. so

  543. how do we piece

  544. all of this together?

  545. well

  546. when we piece

  547. these things together

  548. the reality of sin

  549. but the reality

  550. of God's love

  551. and forgiveness

  552. we see a theme

  553. emerge.

  554. you see

  555. it doesn't take long

  556. for sin

  557. and evil

  558. to set its claws

  559. in us as individuals

  560. and as a society

  561. and surely

  562. we don't have to think

  563. too long and hard

  564. to see

  565. how this happens

  566. generationally

  567. that when a generation

  568. turns its back

  569. on God

  570. there are consequences

  571. it is not that

  572. God

  573. hates us

  574. and wants

  575. wants us

  576. to suffer

  577. the very opposite

  578. but these are words

  579. of warning

  580. that when one generation

  581. turns its back

  582. on God

  583. there will be consequences

  584. because a life

  585. without God

  586. is a life

  587. that is not worth

  588. living

  589. when a society

  590. and a culture

  591. turns its back

  592. on God

  593. its values

  594. and its cultural

  595. norms

  596. change very quickly

  597. indeed

  598. when different

  599. moral values

  600. become enshrined

  601. in law

  602. societal values

  603. change rapidly

  604. you know what

  605. I'm talking about

  606. John Wesley

  607. said

  608. what one generation

  609. tolerates

  610. the next

  611. will embrace

  612. it doesn't

  613. take long

  614. for the cultural

  615. norms

  616. of

  617. any society

  618. to change

  619. when we forget

  620. about the goodness

  621. of God

  622. and we're warned

  623. about this

  624. centuries later

  625. Paul picks up

  626. the theme

  627. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  628. chapter 10

  629. it's coming up

  630. on the screen

  631. where he refers

  632. specifically to this

  633. story from Exodus

  634. that we're looking

  635. at today

  636. Paul writes this

  637. for I do not

  638. want you to be

  639. ignorant

  640. of the fact

  641. brothers and

  642. sisters

  643. that our

  644. ancestors

  645. were all

  646. under the

  647. cloud

  648. that they

  649. passed through

  650. and that they

  651. passed through

  652. the sea

  653. they were all

  654. baptized into

  655. Moses in the

  656. cloud

  657. and in the

  658. sea

  659. they all

  660. ate the same

  661. spiritual food

  662. and drank the

  663. same spiritual

  664. drink

  665. for they drank

  666. from the

  667. spiritual rock

  668. that accompanied

  669. them

  670. and that rock

  671. was Christ

  672. nevertheless

  673. God was not

  674. pleased with most

  675. of them

  676. their bodies

  677. were scattered

  678. in the wilderness

  679. now these things

  680. occurred as examples

  681. to keep us from

  682. setting our hearts

  683. on evil things

  684. as they did

  685. do not be

  686. idolaters

  687. as some of them

  688. were

  689. as it is written

  690. the people sat

  691. down to eat

  692. and drink

  693. and got up

  694. to indulge

  695. in revelry

  696. we should not

  697. commit sexual

  698. immorality

  699. as some of them

  700. did

  701. and in one

  702. day 23,000

  703. of them

  704. died

  705. we should not

  706. test Christ

  707. as some of them

  708. did

  709. and were killed

  710. by snakes

  711. and do not grumble

  712. as some of them

  713. did

  714. and were killed

  715. by the destroying

  716. angel

  717. these things

  718. happened to them

  719. as examples

  720. and were written

  721. down as warnings

  722. for us

  723. on whom

  724. the culmination

  725. of the angels

  726. has come

  727. so if you

  728. think you

  729. are standing

  730. firm

  731. be careful

  732. that you

  733. don't fall

  734. no temptation

  735. has overtaken

  736. you

  737. except what

  738. is common

  739. to mankind

  740. and God

  741. is faithful

  742. he will not

  743. let you be

  744. tempted beyond

  745. what you can

  746. bear

  747. but when you

  748. are tempted

  749. he will also

  750. provide a way

  751. out

  752. so that you

  753. can endure

  754. it

  755. a few years

  756. ago

  757. I think it was

  758. New York

  759. I'm not sure

  760. it was an

  761. American city

  762. it doesn't really

  763. matter which one

  764. it was

  765. there was a

  766. city

  767. and a car

  768. had been

  769. stolen

  770. and the police

  771. went out of

  772. their way

  773. to suddenly

  774. draw attention

  775. to the fact

  776. that this car

  777. had been

  778. stolen

  779. everybody

  780. was put

  781. on high

  782. alert

  783. they were

  784. trying to

  785. put it

  786. out

  787. everywhere

  788. posters

  789. they were

  790. putting it

  791. out on

  792. radio

  793. they were

  794. putting it

  795. out on

  796. TV

  797. everywhere

  798. desperately

  799. trying to

  800. salvage

  801. the car

  802. and more

  803. importantly

  804. the person

  805. that had

  806. stolen

  807. this car

  808. why so

  809. much

  810. fuss

  811. well it

  812. wasn't because

  813. of the car

  814. itself

  815. it was what

  816. was in the

  817. glove compartment

  818. of this car

  819. you see in that

  820. glove compartment

  821. there was a

  822. pack of

  823. biscuits

  824. the biscuits

  825. contained

  826. rat poison

  827. the owner

  828. of the car

  829. had a problem

  830. with rats

  831. at home

  832. and they

  833. had been

  834. told to

  835. get some

  836. biscuits

  837. and to

  838. get some

  839. rat poison

  840. and to

  841. infuse the

  842. biscuits

  843. with the

  844. rat poison

  845. and put

  846. them out

  847. they'd done

  848. this and for

  849. some reason

  850. they were

  851. being stored

  852. in the glove

  853. compartment

  854. of the car

  855. and the

  856. reason why

  857. so much

  858. fuss was

  859. being made

  860. we've got

  861. to find

  862. whoever stole

  863. that car

  864. we've got

  865. to bring

  866. them in

  867. is because

  868. who knows

  869. what's going

  870. to happen

  871. to those

  872. poisoned

  873. biscuits

  874. biscuits

  875. sometimes

  876. our

  877. understanding

  878. of themes

  879. such as

  880. law

  881. rules

  882. urgency

  883. warning

  884. can be so

  885. profoundly

  886. misunderstood

  887. you see the

  888. reason God

  889. sets before us

  890. rules and

  891. laws is not

  892. because he

  893. wants to stop

  894. us from living

  895. life fully

  896. the very

  897. opposite

  898. God is

  899. faithful to

  900. us as

  901. individuals

  902. and as

  903. a society

  904. and he

  905. wants us

  906. to live

  907. life fully

  908. and that

  909. is why

  910. he sets

  911. out

  912. this is

  913. how to

  914. live

  915. not because

  916. he wants

  917. us to

  918. stop having

  919. fun

  920. but because

  921. he wants

  922. to set

  923. us free

  924. and you

  925. know we

  926. need

  927. laws

  928. we need

  929. rules

  930. we need

  931. structure

  932. 1993

  933. I was a

  934. student and

  935. I spent

  936. three weeks

  937. of that

  938. summer

  939. working in

  940. Canning Town

  941. in East

  942. London

  943. with an

  944. organisation

  945. called

  946. Youth for

  947. Christ

  948. it was a

  949. sort of a

  950. the project

  951. was called

  952. Street

  953. Invaders

  954. there was

  955. about a

  956. hundred of

  957. us young

  958. people from

  959. all over

  960. the country

  961. and we

  962. stayed in

  963. that part of

  964. East London

  965. for those

  966. few weeks

  967. and during

  968. the day

  969. we were out

  970. on the

  971. streets

  972. meeting young

  973. people in

  974. the parks

  975. and going up

  976. with leaflets

  977. and inviting

  978. them to the

  979. stuff that the

  980. church was

  981. doing in the

  982. evenings

  983. and in the

  984. evenings

  985. we had a

  986. number of

  987. things going

  988. on at the

  989. church

  990. we had

  991. various

  992. different

  993. sports going

  994. on and

  995. games and

  996. stuff like

  997. that

  998. and then

  999. there was a

  1000. moment where

  1001. the young

  1002. people were

  1003. gathered together

  1004. and we gave

  1005. them a message

  1006. about Christ

  1007. I have no

  1008. idea how this

  1009. happened but

  1010. somehow I

  1011. ended up in

  1012. a sports

  1013. hall that was

  1014. part of this

  1015. church complex

  1016. in which a

  1017. load of

  1018. 14 year old

  1019. lads were

  1020. playing football

  1021. the reason I

  1022. said I don't

  1023. know why that

  1024. happened is

  1025. those of you

  1026. who know me

  1027. know that I

  1028. can't do

  1029. anything with

  1030. a ball

  1031. I just can't

  1032. in fact I

  1033. can't do

  1034. anything with

  1035. any sports

  1036. at all

  1037. it's not

  1038. only the fact

  1039. that I don't

  1040. know I'm not

  1041. very good at

  1042. actually controlling

  1043. a ball it's

  1044. just I never

  1045. understand the

  1046. rules either I

  1047. never have been

  1048. able to I

  1049. was always the

  1050. last kid at

  1051. school to be

  1052. picked for the

  1053. team you know

  1054. so you can

  1055. imagine how

  1056. terrified as

  1057. though it

  1058. wasn't terrifying

  1059. enough for me

  1060. already how

  1061. terrified I

  1062. was when I

  1063. found myself

  1064. in this hall

  1065. surrounded by a

  1066. load of teenage

  1067. lads and the

  1068. guy who was

  1069. meant to be

  1070. refereeing this

  1071. football match

  1072. was called away

  1073. and handed me

  1074. his whistle

  1075. let me just say

  1076. that that was the

  1077. closest to dying

  1078. that I think I've

  1079. ever become

  1080. several minutes

  1081. in and there

  1082. was absolute

  1083. chaos

  1084. why

  1085. because there

  1086. were no rules

  1087. I didn't

  1088. understand this

  1089. game at all

  1090. I still don't

  1091. and as such

  1092. I had absolutely

  1093. no sense of

  1094. authority in that

  1095. situation I

  1096. didn't know what

  1097. was going on

  1098. and absolute

  1099. chaos broke out

  1100. thankfully

  1101. thankfully

  1102. before either the

  1103. police or an

  1104. ambulance had to

  1105. be called

  1106. the youth worker

  1107. in charge came

  1108. back in

  1109. and peace was

  1110. restored

  1111. without rules

  1112. there's chaos

  1113. when we don't

  1114. live by those

  1115. codes

  1116. as a society

  1117. when we forget

  1118. about God

  1119. and his

  1120. moral laws

  1121. for our lives

  1122. it doesn't

  1123. take long

  1124. for things

  1125. to change

  1126. but as

  1127. sobering as

  1128. that thought

  1129. may be

  1130. let's remember

  1131. that this

  1132. story in

  1133. Exodus is

  1134. there to

  1135. remind us

  1136. yeah of

  1137. our own

  1138. human

  1139. unfaithfulness

  1140. but more

  1141. fundamentally

  1142. of God's

  1143. faithfulness

  1144. you see

  1145. this story

  1146. here

  1147. doesn't

  1148. end with

  1149. us

  1150. just

  1151. you know

  1152. with the

  1153. people's

  1154. faces

  1155. just being

  1156. rubbed

  1157. in their

  1158. own

  1159. sin

  1160. but rather

  1161. things are

  1162. restored

  1163. God does

  1164. not give

  1165. up on

  1166. those who

  1167. give up

  1168. on him

  1169. and the

  1170. law is

  1171. written out

  1172. again

  1173. the ten

  1174. commandments

  1175. are written

  1176. again

  1177. on stone

  1178. for Moses

  1179. to share

  1180. with his

  1181. people and

  1182. to pass

  1183. on down

  1184. the

  1185. generations

  1186. but it

  1187. doesn't

  1188. even end

  1189. there

  1190. because God

  1191. is not

  1192. just a

  1193. machine

  1194. in his

  1195. consistency

  1196. God is

  1197. so profoundly

  1198. personal

  1199. and so as

  1200. the law

  1201. is given

  1202. yes the

  1203. law is

  1204. given

  1205. but with

  1206. it

  1207. an almighty

  1208. dose

  1209. of the

  1210. loving

  1211. presence

  1212. of God

  1213. as

  1214. Moses

  1215. encounters

  1216. him

  1217. in all

  1218. his

  1219. wonderful

  1220. loveliness

  1221. Lord you

  1222. are

  1223. endlessly

  1224. compassionate

  1225. and faithful

  1226. and loving

  1227. that you

  1228. will not

  1229. give up

  1230. on your

  1231. people

  1232. and we

  1233. thank you

  1234. for that

  1235. that for

  1236. those many

  1237. times that we

  1238. have turned

  1239. our backs

  1240. on you

  1241. and let

  1242. you down

  1243. and lived

  1244. lives that

  1245. have been

  1246. self-focused

  1247. thank you

  1248. that you

  1249. don't give

  1250. up on us

  1251. because you

  1252. are relentless

  1253. in your

  1254. love

  1255. Holy Spirit

  1256. come and

  1257. fill our

  1258. hearts now

  1259. Holy Spirit

  1260. come

  1261. continue to

  1262. move in

  1263. our hearts

  1264. in Jesus

  1265. name

  1266. to

  1267. pack

  1268. through

  1269. isters
