  1. I want to ask you a question.

  2. What happens inside of you when you hear the phrase, terms and conditions?

  3. In particular, what happens when you're online and you're trying to do something and suddenly

  4. it flashes up?

  5. Please read and tick the box that says I agree to these terms and conditions.

  6. And you scroll down and down and down and down and down and down and down and down.

  7. And a document that looks about it's the length of the entire contents of Wikipedia and you

  8. tick that box.

  9. A few years ago, the Washington Post reported on a study of how we tend to respond.

  10. When we come across those online, please agree to terms and conditions.

  11. It was an experiment.

  12. Open Wi-Fi was set up in a busy public area.

  13. Signs were put up all over the place and you could get free Wi-Fi.

  14. When connected, all the users or about to be users were presented with the said terms and

  15. conditions, which they had to tick the box before they could connect.

  16. In that small print, as an experiment, they inserted what was referred to as a Herod clause.

  17. This meant that the free Wi-Fi was offered in exchange for full ownership of the user's firstborn child.

  18. And people just ticked and agreed.

  19. A survey found out that 58% of the population would rather read an instruction manual than a set of terms and conditions online.

  20. 12% said they'd rather read the phone book from cover to cover.

  21. Interestingly, in 2010, on April Fool's Day, so not an experiment, but just as a prank,

  22. in the UK, in one place, shoppers were tricked in a similar set up with free Wi-Fi

  23. and were tricked into signing away their souls.

  24. Terms and conditions.

  25. Terms and conditions.

  26. Contracts.

  27. Keeping our part of the deal.

  28. Today's the day we're invited to join together in saying the covenant prayer.

  29. And we think about that theme of covenant.

  30. And as I said earlier on in the service, perhaps it's not a word that tends to find its way into everyday conversation that much.

  31. But it's an important word.

  32. It's a word that means so much more than just a contract.

  33. A set of terms and conditions.

  34. The risk of oversimplifying, biblically, when we come across that word covenant,

  35. we need to think not in terms of terms and conditions,

  36. but we need to think in terms of a God who says,

  37. look, this is what I'm doing for you.

  38. This is what I'm giving you.

  39. This is what I want you to have.

  40. I long for you to have.

  41. This is what I'm promising you.

  42. And what I ask is quite simply that you follow me.

  43. To unpack that a little bit more,

  44. I just want to focus in on just a few words

  45. from that passage from Mark chapter 1 that Lorna read for us a moment ago.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  46. Jesus says at the beginning of his ministry as it's recorded in Mark's gospel,

  47. repent and believe in the good news.

  48. Actually, what I want us to do is focus in not on even all of that sentence,

  49. but just on the first part of that sentence,

  50. where Jesus says, repent and.

  51. See, the word repent, repentance, you've probably heard this said before.

  52. It sort of means stop, but it means something more dynamic than that.

  53. It means change, change direction, turn around.

  54. But interestingly, when we look at that word in the New Testament,

  55. we notice a pattern when it comes up.

  56. Because very often we find that the word is not presented in isolation.

  57. It's repent and something.

  58. Stop, change, and something.

  59. It's as though we need to understand that for repentance to make sense,

  60. or for the sort of response that God invites us to make sense,

  61. if we just look at what we're stopping doing,

  62. what we're changing from,

  63. we can miss the most important thing,

  64. which is not so much what we're changing from and leaving behind,

  65. but what we're walking into.

  66. Repent and.

  67. So Jesus doesn't just say repent.

  68. He says repent and believe in the good news.

  69. Stop doing that stuff.

  70. Leave that behind and believe in this,

  71. because this is just amazing.

  72. This is so much bigger and better and fuller and wider and deeper and richer

  73. than anything else you're going to leave behind.

  74. Think of some other examples.

  75. Think of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon the people of God.

  76. The church was born.

  77. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  78. People see all of these Christians receive the power of the Holy Spirit.

  79. The Holy Spirit pours into people's hearts,

  80. and it begins to manifest in all sorts of amazing ways.

  81. People start to worship God.

  82. They're falling down.

  83. They're speaking in tongues, in multiple languages.

  84. And quite understandably, who could blame them?

  85. The bystanders, the onlookers, say to Peter after he's preached a sermon,

  86. he says, you know, so what are we to do then?

  87. And Peter says, if you want some of this, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ

  88. for the forgiveness of sins,

  89. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  90. If the Holy Spirit is there, it's on the people.

  91. If you want some of that action, repent and be baptized,

  92. and you will receive the Holy Spirit.

  93. You see, it doesn't stop at the point that you stop and leave behind certain things.

  94. No, that's not the end.

  95. It's the beginning.

  96. Repent and be baptized and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  97. Well, in the next chapter in the book of Acts, we see Peter, again, Peter and John,

  98. they've ministered in the power of the Holy Spirit to a man who could not walk.

  99. He can walk.

  100. He's been healed.

  101. And understandably, people around see this happen.

  102. This guy who's been sat there by the temple begging for years,

  103. and suddenly he's prayed for and he's healed.

  104. And they say, what's going on?

  105. And Peter says, then repent and turn to God,

  106. so that your sins may be wiped out,

  107. that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

  108. If you want the action, yeah, repent, repent, and this will happen.

  109. Most very often in our own lives, maybe we've been followers of Jesus,

  110. trying to follow Jesus, made all the failures along the way,

  111. but maybe for years we've been trying to do this.

  112. We've been Christians.

  113. This is not new stuff to us, but we feel that we've run dry.

  114. We're burnt out.

  115. We're exhausted spiritually.

  116. We long for something new.

  117. You know, these words are just as much for us as they are for anybody.

  118. Because we see in the book of Revelation,

  119. right at the end of the New Testament,

  120. as that revelation is given to John,

  121. and he writes to the different churches,

  122. one particular message that he gives in that book to the church in Ephesus,

  123. is he says, you know, you're a great church.

  124. You're full of great, faithful Christians.

  125. But you've forgotten your first love.

  126. And it says you need to rekindle that first love.

  127. Come back to when you were first knew the transforming power of Jesus.

  128. And it says this in Revelation 2, verse 5,

    Revelation 2:5

  129. repent and do the things you did at first.

  130. John Wesley knew that when you came to faith,

  131. you gave your life to Jesus,

  132. that wasn't the end of a process.

  133. It was just the beginning.

  134. That repentance, it doesn't just stand on its own.

  135. It's not just stopping doing certain things,

  136. but it's starting the new life in Christ,

  137. and it never ends.

  138. And so Wesley wrote this.

  139. Bear in mind, this was written quite a few years ago.

  140. He said, yea, and when you have attained a measure of perfect love,

  141. when God has enabled you to love him with all your heart

  142. and with all your soul,

  143. think not of resting there.

  144. That's impossible.

  145. Get this.

  146. He said, you cannot stand.

  147. Still.

  148. When we hear the words repent, stop, change,

  149. we need to hear the and,

  150. and what that means for us.

  151. And sadly for so many, faith dries up.

  152. It gets static,

  153. because we've either forgotten about,

  154. or we've not been told that following Jesus

  155. is not just about a conversion.

  156. It's about an ongoing,

  157. lifelong experience of that repent

  158. and knowing the ongoing power of God's Holy Spirit.

  159. You know, it's not a contract

  160. where we receive the forgiveness of Jesus

  161. and we say, thanks Jesus,

  162. I'll see you in heaven.

  163. But it's an ongoing life changing

  164. that never ends.

  165. Go on being filled with God's Holy Spirit.

  166. Repent.

  167. And.

  168. And each of us is faced with the challenge

  169. of working out what that means for us,

  170. what that looks like for us,

  171. because it will be different

  172. for each and every one of us

  173. as we work out what it is

  174. that God wants us to do

  175. in our daily lives.

  176. To keep on asking,

  177. what is that and for us?

  178. What direction is he calling us into?

  179. What is,

  180. what is he saying to us

  181. in this next

  182. stage of our lives

  183. every single day?

  184. But you know,

  185. perhaps what's even more tragic

  186. is when people don't give Jesus

  187. a chance at all.

  188. Because they look at the message

  189. of Christianity

  190. and they only think of the word repent.

  191. And they only think of stuff

  192. that we've got to stop.

  193. I was saying that story last week

  194. of that teenager I met years ago

  195. when I was a youth worker.

  196. And I'd never forgotten the story

  197. when, you know,

  198. she said,

  199. I'm not a Christian.

  200. And I said,

  201. why aren't you a Christian?

  202. And she said,

  203. well, if you become a Christian,

  204. you can't do stuff.

  205. You see,

  206. repent is important.

  207. There is the change.

  208. There is the turn.

  209. But as important

  210. is the and.

  211. That not so much

  212. what we're necessarily

  213. what we're being called

  214. to leave behind,

  215. but what we're being called

  216. to step into.

  217. It's not just the stop.

  218. It's about the start.

  219. We'll share you one,

  220. one last story.

  221. Tamara,

  222. my wife,

  223. is a music teacher,

  224. freelance music teacher.

  225. Before she did that,

  226. she spent six years

  227. working as a classroom teacher

  228. in primary schools.

  229. That was a long time ago

  230. in a galaxy far,

  231. far away.

  232. I have permission

  233. to share the story

  234. I'm about to share

  235. with you,

  236. by the way.

  237. Well,

  238. sort of.

  239. I think I do.

  240. As a classroom teacher,

  241. she taught across

  242. the different things

  243. that you have to teach,

  244. including sex education.

  245. to year five and six.

  246. And the first time

  247. she did this

  248. in this particular school,

  249. a letter went home

  250. to the parents

  251. and saying

  252. that we're going to be

  253. doing sex education

  254. next week

  255. and the children

  256. are going to be

  257. shown a video.

  258. And if you want

  259. to know more about this

  260. before the lesson,

  261. then please

  262. just come and ask.

  263. Well,

  264. one particular parent

  265. did come and ask

  266. and asked if they

  267. could borrow the video.

  268. This was back in the day

  269. of VHS tapes.

  270. It will give you an idea

  271. of how long ago

  272. this was.

  273. So,

  274. the mum took this

  275. tape home

  276. and watched it

  277. over the weekend.

  278. So,

  279. in case you're interested

  280. in what it was,

  281. in fact,

  282. you need to know

  283. in order for the story

  284. to make sense.

  285. There was a scene

  286. in the video

  287. where there was

  288. a mum and dad

  289. and they got out of bed

  290. one by one

  291. and they walked

  292. with no clothes on

  293. across the landing

  294. to the bathroom

  295. very slowly

  296. and so the commentary

  297. could then describe

  298. the differences

  299. between a man

  300. and a woman

  301. in all their glory.

  302. Well,

  303. Monday morning came

  304. and Tamara's

  305. getting ready

  306. to teach

  307. when a very,

  308. very uptight

  309. and angry

  310. looking parent

  311. clutching a VHS tape

  312. was marching

  313. across the playground

  314. wearing a facial

  315. expression

  316. that's generally

  317. reserved for the

  318. act of swallowing

  319. a wasp.

  320. She was not

  321. a happy bunny.

  322. And we said,

  323. is everything okay?

  324. She said,

  325. no,

  326. everything is not okay.

  327. Slamming the VHS tape

  328. down on the desk.

  329. I've watched this

  330. over the weekend

  331. and frankly,

  332. I am disgusted.

  333. I am appalled.

  334. How could you possibly

  335. show that

  336. to children?

  337. She said,

  338. go on.

  339. I saw this scene

  340. when they get out

  341. of bed

  342. and they walk

  343. along the landing

  344. to the bathroom.

  345. Yeah.

  346. Well,

  347. I'm appalled.

  348. Did you see

  349. the state

  350. of their wallpaper?

  351. not quite knowing

  352. what to say,

  353. Tamara was speechless

  354. but the mum

  355. went on.

  356. And their carpets!

  357. I know some people

  358. live like that

  359. but do we all

  360. have to see it?

  361. Now,

  362. the point of me

  363. telling you that story

  364. and there is one,

  365. maybe there are times

  366. when our attention

  367. is completely

  368. in the wrong place

  369. and we're noticing

  370. completely the wrong things

  371. and we're caught up

  372. in totally

  373. the wrong direction.

  374. What a tragedy it is

  375. when we look at

  376. repent

  377. and believe

  378. the good news.

  379. Repent

  380. and turn to God.

  381. When we focus

  382. just on the repent,

  383. the stop doing this.

  384. And God just longs

  385. for us to see

  386. that yes,

  387. stop doing that.

  388. But,

  389. but,

  390. but if only you saw

  391. how tiny

  392. and pathetic

  393. and trivial

  394. the stuff is

  395. that I'm asking you

  396. to leave behind

  397. in relation,

  398. in contrast

  399. to that which

  400. I want you to step into

  401. and live.

  402. And my prayer

  403. today

  404. for all of us

  405. as we've prayed

  406. in that very dangerous

  407. prayer that we prayed

  408. earlier on in the service

  409. called the covenant prayer

  410. is that our focus

  411. will not be distracted

  412. on the things

  413. that God continually

  414. calls us

  415. to leave behind

  416. and leave them

  417. in our past

  418. and not to go back there

  419. but rather

  420. our full attention

  421. and focus

  422. will be on the

  423. amazing life

  424. that ultimately

  425. lies in eternity

  426. but starts

  427. right here

  428. and right now.

  429. That life

  430. where he just

  431. longs to fill

  432. and go on

  433. filling

  434. in ever greater

  435. measure

  436. with the power

  437. and the strength

  438. of his Holy Spirit.

  439. And the implications

  440. of what that

  441. looked like

  442. will be different

  443. for each one of us

  444. but I can tell you this

  445. it is exciting.

  446. Whatever age

  447. or stage in life

  448. we are at

  449. whatever challenges

  450. or inhibitions

  451. we may face

  452. God's there.

  453. And as long as

  454. we are here

  455. in this world

  456. to quote Billy Graham

  457. God's got a plan

  458. and that will only

  459. ever be exciting.

  460. so let's pray

  461. together now.

  462. Lord thank you

  463. that

  464. though at the

  465. heart of the

  466. gospel

  467. there's

  468. a challenge

  469. to stop

  470. and to change

  471. that the

  472. thrust of your

  473. message

  474. of the good

  475. news

  476. is not what

  477. you're calling

  478. us

  479. not so much

  480. about what

  481. you're calling

  482. us to leave

  483. but what

  484. you are calling

  485. us to step

  486. into.

  487. We thank you

  488. for the excitement

  489. of that.

  490. Lord help us

  491. to open

  492. ourselves

  493. each day

  494. to those

  495. new things

  496. that you

  497. call us

  498. to.

  499. Whatever that

  500. looks like

  501. in our daily

  502. lives.

  503. Open us up

  504. to the power

  505. of your Holy

  506. Spirit.

  507. Help us

  508. to know

  509. that you

  510. have only

  511. the best

  512. in mind

  513. for us.

  514. Forgive us

  515. for those

  516. times when

  517. our view

  518. of life

  519. with you

  520. is so

  521. small.

  522. Lord open

  523. up our

  524. hearts

  525. and our

  526. minds

  527. and our

  528. eyes

  529. and our

  530. ears

  531. to all

  532. that you

  533. have in

  534. store for

  535. us

  536. that we

  537. may live

  538. out

  539. expectantly

  540. the plans

  541. that you

  542. have.

  543. Lord fill

  544. us and

  545. go on

  546. filling us

  547. now

  548. and in

  549. the time

  550. to come.

  551. In

  552. Jesus name.

  553. Amen.

  554. Amen.

  555. Amen.

  556. Amen.

  557. Amen.

  558. Amen.

  559. Amen.

  560. Amen.

  561. Amen.

  562. Amen.

  563. Amen.

  564. Amen.
