  1. As for you, how do you feel when you hear that?

  2. Well, as for you, that's how this starts.

  3. Well, in fact, the Greek literally just says, and you,

  4. but it starts a sentence with that.

  5. So you can see how that translation, in order to convey it,

  6. is there, as for you.

  7. See, the thing is, is when you hear, as for you,

  8. you sit up and pay attention.

  9. Usually, it's a sign that good news is not forthcoming,

  10. that you're in trouble.

  11. I kind of think of, as for you, you're fired.

  12. But it might not be.

  13. It could be something else.

  14. It could be something really positive.

  15. And in fact, it is something really positive here.

  16. But the point is, in order to understand the context of what, as for you, is about,

  17. you've got to know what it is that comes immediately beforehand that you is being contrasted with.

  18. So in order to make sense of that, we're going to go back to the words at the end of the preceding chapter of Ephesians 1,

  19. and ask, well, who or what is Paul talking about?

  20. Before he says, but as for you, this is what he says.

  21. He talks about Christ.

  22. Throughout that whole chapter, Paul builds this picture of the majesty, the power of Christ,

  23. what Christ has done for you and me.

  24. And then, as for you.

  25. In other words, everything that Paul says is following the implications of everything that Jesus has done.

  26. He's saying that that's to be the link.

  27. As we try and navigate our way through our lives,

  28. it needs to come back to everything that Jesus has done.

  29. That amazing gift that he has given to us,

  30. it's completely free.

  31. But it's not cheap.

  32. But we need to remember that the reason it's so important,

  33. the reason it matters,

  34. is because of Jesus.

  35. As for you,

  36. it's a pointing back to the one to whom we are connected.

  37. So, in verse, perhaps I have the first slide here.

  38. Here we go.

  39. As for you,

  40. what's the first thing that he says here in chapter 2?

  41. Well, he says,

  42. as for you,

  43. you were dead

  44. in your transgressions

  45. and sins.

  46. You were dead.

  47. years ago,

  48. it became quite commonplace

  49. to talk about death

  50. as a taboo.

  51. You don't talk about it.

  52. I'm not sure that that's actually the case anymore,

  53. but it was,

  54. it kind of had its roots

  55. in some writing in the 1950s.

  56. Somebody called Jeffrey Gora

  57. wrote a book called

  58. The Pornography of Death.

  59. And his basic idea

  60. was that by the 1950s,

  61. in Britain at least,

  62. that you could see a radical contrast

  63. between the way in which people

  64. would talk about death

  65. or not talk about it

  66. in contrast

  67. with the theme of sex.

  68. And he said that for,

  69. in Victorian culture,

  70. the whole theme of sex

  71. was repressed.

  72. But they did public mourning

  73. very openly.

  74. You know,

  75. when somebody died,

  76. people would,

  77. would,

  78. would,

  79. would dress in black

  80. and there was all these kind of

  81. cultural norms

  82. of,

  83. of public mourning.

  84. And he said that by the sort of

  85. middle of the 20th century,

  86. that had reversed.

  87. And,

  88. and actually people talk quite openly

  89. about sex.

  90. It was really,

  91. you know,

  92. it was sort of emerging,

  93. it was very much in your face.

  94. But,

  95. but death was something

  96. that was tabooed.

  97. We don't go there.

  98. About 20 years later

  99. in the 1970s,

  100. and as Becker wrote

  101. a book called

  102. The Denial of Death.

  103. And it pretty much

  104. became accepted

  105. that,

  106. that that's kind of,

  107. you know,

  108. a hallmark of Western,

  109. certainly British culture,

  110. that death is something

  111. that is taboo,

  112. that we deny it,

  113. we don't want to talk about it,

  114. we sort of,

  115. we try and keep it out of,

  116. of,

  117. of,

  118. of everyday life.

  119. It's marginalised.

  120. But you know,

  121. I don't think that's true.

  122. If it was true then,

  123. I don't think it is true now,

  124. that over the last 50 years,

  125. that has changed enormously.

  126. It was as long ago

  127. as 2007

  128. that one particular study

  129. spoke so much about

  130. the amount of death

  131. that is presented

  132. in the media

  133. that,

  134. that by the age of 18,

  135. the average child

  136. would have seen

  137. no fewer than

  138. 40,000 deaths

  139. on the screen.

  140. Now that was back in 2007,

  141. and I don't think that

  142. it has actually got any less,

  143. if anything,

  144. it's got much more.

  145. And that was,

  146. when talking about the screen,

  147. that was a reference

  148. to television.

  149. Well,

  150. actually,

  151. we don't watch it,

  152. most of our media these days

  153. isn't through terrestrial TV,

  154. it's,

  155. it's online,

  156. and I don't think

  157. there is any less

  158. by way of images

  159. of,

  160. of violence

  161. and death

  162. now.

  163. But also,

  164. when we look at

  165. wider society,

  166. we can see how things

  167. have changed.

  168. Rewind back to 1997

  169. and think of

  170. the,

  171. the,

  172. the,

  173. the cultural phenomenon

  174. after the death

  175. of Princess Diana

  176. and the way

  177. in which,

  178. as a nation,

  179. we went into

  180. a time of mourning.

  181. And think of

  182. the Queen's funeral

  183. the other year.

  184. And all of those people

  185. sort of,

  186. queuing up

  187. for,

  188. for days

  189. to file past

  190. the Queen's coffin.

  191. think of it.

  192. Think how

  193. today

  194. there,

  195. the,

  196. the public expressions

  197. of grief and mourning

  198. has become very commonplace

  199. every time there is a,

  200. a big scale

  201. tragic event.

  202. Think of the amount

  203. of roadside memorials

  204. and benches,

  205. for example,

  206. that we see now

  207. where grief

  208. is

  209. very openly

  210. expressed.

  211. so I'm not convinced

  212. that it's quite accurate

  213. even though people

  214. will still talk about

  215. death as the last

  216. debut,

  217. I'm not convinced

  218. that that's actually

  219. the case.

  220. What is the case

  221. is,

  222. is,

  223. is how we

  224. handle

  225. the theme of death.

  226. And I would suggest

  227. that for many

  228. there is a sense

  229. of denial

  230. in so far

  231. as that it will be

  232. pushed to one side

  233. because it's something

  234. that we would actually

  235. rather,

  236. rather not really

  237. think too long

  238. and hard about

  239. because it perhaps

  240. seems morbid,

  241. perhaps it just feels

  242. that,

  243. well,

  244. what is there to say?

  245. But the point here,

  246. Paul,

  247. is that saying

  248. that,

  249. yeah,

  250. death is something

  251. that must be faced

  252. but here's the point,

  253. it's not something

  254. that lies ahead of you.

  255. It is a reality

  256. but it's in the past tense.

  257. As for you,

  258. he says,

  259. he doesn't say

  260. you're going to die

  261. or that we're dying

  262. or always be ready

  263. for when you die.

  264. No,

  265. he says,

  266. as for you,

  267. you were dead.

  268. That is to be

  269. the mindset

  270. of the Christian believer.

  271. If you follow Jesus,

  272. you follow Jesus

  273. who has been

  274. through death already.

  275. He is alive

  276. and with his own death

  277. so you have died

  278. and raised with him.

  279. death is to be seen

  280. as a reality

  281. that we need

  282. to be deeply,

  283. deeply aware of

  284. but as a past reality.

  285. It's gone.

  286. That's how you walk

  287. when you follow Jesus.

  288. Death is relegated

  289. not to the front

  290. but to the back.

  291. It's behind you.

  292. It is in the past.

  293. And so he goes on.

  294. Paul says

  295. as it carries on.

  296. Next slide, please.

  297. And God

  298. raised us up

  299. with Christ

  300. and seated us

  301. with him

  302. in the heavenly realms

  303. in Christ Jesus.

  304. You see,

  305. this is where

  306. it becomes

  307. identity.

  308. The reason why

  309. when you put death

  310. behind you

  311. rather than ahead of you,

  312. that becomes

  313. your identity.

  314. identity,

  315. you are in Christ.

  316. We live in a culture

  317. that has just

  318. gone mad

  319. over identity politics

  320. where all sorts

  321. of different things

  322. can identify

  323. who you are.

  324. But you know,

  325. I think

  326. it is a truism

  327. that very often

  328. we would try,

  329. we would end up

  330. defining ourselves

  331. almost by the things

  332. that we do.

  333. I mean,

  334. how do you define

  335. who you are?

  336. So I have to talk about

  337. who are you

  338. as a person.

  339. I'm guessing

  340. instinctively

  341. our thoughts

  342. immediately

  343. go to the things

  344. that we've done

  345. or the things

  346. that we do.

  347. We might think

  348. of our achievements,

  349. we might think

  350. of our non-achievements.

  351. It's a dangerous

  352. thing though

  353. when we think

  354. that way.

  355. It could be

  356. so misleading.

  357. This is why

  358. when suddenly

  359. we can't do

  360. those things

  361. that we once

  362. could,

  363. maybe through

  364. ill health

  365. or whatever

  366. it may be,

  367. then our identity

  368. can feel

  369. like it's going.

  370. The good news

  371. is that

  372. as a Christian

  373. your identity

  374. does not lie

  375. in what you do.

  376. There was

  377. an artist

  378. called

  379. Paul Gustav Dor.

  380. He lived

  381. from 1832

  382. to 1883.

  383. He was travelling

  384. Europe

  385. and he was

  386. at a border

  387. and wanted

  388. to cross

  389. and he couldn't

  390. find his passport

  391. as documentation

  392. that he needed

  393. to prove

  394. who he was.

  395. So the officer

  396. standing at

  397. the border control

  398. told him

  399. who he was

  400. and he recognised

  401. the name

  402. as this famous

  403. artist.

  404. He said,

  405. I can't let you

  406. through if you

  407. haven't got anything

  408. to prove

  409. who you claim

  410. to be.

  411. You're telling

  412. me that you're

  413. Paul Gustav Dor.

  414. Here you go.

  415. He pulled out

  416. a piece of paper

  417. and a pencil

  418. and he said,

  419. if you go over there

  420. and draw a picture

  421. of those people

  422. standing over there

  423. and bring it back.

  424. He came back

  425. a few minutes later

  426. with this

  427. extraordinary picture

  428. and the story

  429. goes,

  430. and I assume

  431. it's true,

  432. but the story

  433. goes that

  434. at border control

  435. they took

  436. that picture

  437. and took it

  438. as evidence

  439. that this

  440. clearly was

  441. this guy

  442. and they let him

  443. through.

  444. So identity

  445. was proved

  446. by what he

  447. could do.

  448. But Paul

  449. says here

  450. that our

  451. identity

  452. is not

  453. to be proved

  454. by what you

  455. do,

  456. but by what

  457. God does.

  458. Your identity,

  459. look here,

  460. God raised us

  461. up with Christ

  462. and seated us

  463. with him

  464. in the heavenly

  465. realms in

  466. Christ Jesus.

  467. Now right now

  468. you might not

  469. think that your

  470. life is one

  471. of sitting

  472. in the heavenly

  473. realms.

  474. realms.

  475. But Paul

  476. says it is.

  477. One day

  478. that will be

  479. a reality

  480. that we

  481. will all

  482. actually see,

  483. lay hold of

  484. and understand

  485. as the kingdom

  486. comes in all

  487. its fullness.

  488. But right now

  489. you are to know

  490. that you are

  491. in Christ

  492. who is in

  493. the heavenly

  494. realms

  495. and that you

  496. are held

  497. in him

  498. and that your

  499. identity

  500. therefore lies

  501. in him.

  502. I've used

  503. this illustration

  504. before and it

  505. doesn't come

  506. from me,

  507. it comes from

  508. somebody else,

  509. but you know,

  510. got a piece

  511. of paper

  512. and imagine

  513. the piece

  514. of paper

  515. is you

  516. and this

  517. Bible is

  518. Christ.

  519. When you

  520. follow Jesus

  521. you are in

  522. Christ,

  523. the piece

  524. of paper

  525. goes into

  526. that book.

  527. Wherever

  528. that book

  529. goes,

  530. you go.

  531. You are

  532. held in

  533. him.

  534. We still

  535. have to face

  536. all the sorts

  537. of realities

  538. every day

  539. of our lives

  540. that probably

  541. make us feel

  542. well,

  543. I don't

  544. exactly feel

  545. like I'm

  546. sat in

  547. the heavenly

  548. realms

  549. right now,

  550. but that's

  551. when we need

  552. to remember

  553. these words

  554. that Paul

  555. urges us

  556. to remember.

  557. Your identity

  558. now is

  559. different.

  560. Death is

  561. not in

  562. front of

  563. you,

  564. it's behind

  565. you.

  566. You are

  567. in Christ

  568. who is

  569. in the

  570. heavenly

  571. realms

  572. who one

  573. day will

  574. return.

  575. This

  576. means

  577. that your

  578. identity

  579. is defined

  580. by nothing

  581. else

  582. and by

  583. nobody

  584. else

  585. except that

  586. you are

  587. in Christ.

  588. Seated with

  589. him.

  590. in the

  591. heavenly

  592. realms.

  593. In

  594. Christ Jesus,

  595. as for you,

  596. that's who

  597. you are.

  598. Remember it.

  599. the thing

  600. is,

  601. is that

  602. everything,

  603. everything,

  604. Paul says,

  605. is to be

  606. worked out

  607. from that

  608. sense of

  609. identity.

  610. As for

  611. you,

  612. it's all

  613. to do

  614. with what

  615. God has

  616. done for

  617. you in

  618. Christ.

  619. Not with

  620. what you

  621. do,

  622. but what

  623. God has

  624. done for

  625. you.

  626. you

  627. see,

  628. he goes

  629. on to

  630. say that

  631. it is

  632. by grace

  633. that you

  634. have been

  635. saved

  636. through

  637. faith,

  638. and this

  639. is not

  640. from

  641. yourselves,

  642. it's not,

  643. it's the

  644. gift of

  645. God,

  646. not by

  647. works,

  648. so that

  649. no one

  650. can boast.

  651. Imagine that

  652. you walk

  653. into a

  654. car showroom

  655. and it's

  656. full of

  657. very,

  658. very nice,

  659. brand new,

  660. shiny,

  661. expensive

  662. cars.

  663. You see

  664. one that

  665. you really

  666. like the

  667. look of,

  668. it's got

  669. a price

  670. tag of

  671. £80,000

  672. on it.

  673. Somebody

  674. you've never

  675. met before

  676. walks up

  677. to you,

  678. has got a

  679. smile on

  680. their face,

  681. and they

  682. say,

  683. you'd really

  684. like this,

  685. wouldn't you?

  686. You laugh

  687. at them.

  688. They say,

  689. tell you

  690. what,

  691. I'll help

  692. you to buy

  693. it.

  694. You laugh

  695. at them.

  696. They say,

  697. seriously,

  698. how much

  699. have you got

  700. on you?

  701. You reach

  702. into your

  703. back pocket,

  704. you've got

  705. fiver.

  706. You say,

  707. it's alright,

  708. you pop that

  709. down on the

  710. table,

  711. I'll make

  712. up the

  713. rest.

  714. So you

  715. put in a

  716. fiver,

  717. and they've

  718. put in

  719. the,

  720. what did

  721. I say,

  722. 79,995

  723. quid.

  724. Paperwork's

  725. dealt with,

  726. and they

  727. said,

  728. would you

  729. mind just

  730. giving me

  731. a lift

  732. home?

  733. It's

  734. quite an

  735. expensive

  736. lift,

  737. isn't it?

  738. You're

  739. hardly going

  740. to say

  741. no,

  742. are you?

  743. So you

  744. get in the

  745. car,

  746. and you

  747. go for

  748. a spin.

  749. And you

  750. happen to

  751. pull up

  752. at some

  753. traffic lights

  754. in this

  755. brand new

  756. car that

  757. you've

  758. just put

  759. a fiver

  760. towards.

  761. And you

  762. see somebody,

  763. and you're

  764. waiting on

  765. the lights,

  766. they come

  767. over,

  768. they tap

  769. on,

  770. they say,

  771. nice,

  772. nice car.

  773. And you

  774. say,

  775. thank you,

  776. and you're

  777. pointing to

  778. your new

  779. friend,

  780. we bought

  781. this together.

  782. Now any

  783. analogy breaks

  784. down eventually,

  785. of course it

  786. does.

  787. But when

  788. God calls

  789. you,

  790. and you're

  791. in him,

  792. and you're

  793. given that

  794. gift of

  795. grace,

  796. yeah,

  797. it's free,

  798. but it's

  799. not cheap.

  800. we are

  801. called to

  802. respond.

  803. We're

  804. called to

  805. accept that

  806. gift.

  807. We're

  808. called to

  809. live that

  810. out.

  811. But it's

  812. the gift

  813. from God,

  814. not by

  815. works,

  816. so that

  817. no one

  818. can boast.

  819. As for

  820. you,

  821. death is

  822. behind you.

  823. as for

  824. you,

  825. your

  826. identity

  827. is now

  828. held in

  829. Christ,

  830. who's in

  831. the heavenly

  832. realms.

  833. That's who

  834. you are.

  835. You might

  836. not think

  837. much of

  838. yourself,

  839. but God

  840. thinks

  841. otherwise.

  842. As for

  843. you,

  844. you're the

  845. receiver of

  846. this

  847. extraordinary

  848. gift.

  849. As for

  850. you.

  851. So where

  852. do we go

  853. with it?

  854. Well,

  855. let's move

  856. on to

  857. the last,

  858. towards the

  859. end of

  860. those verses.

  861. Paul says,

  862. for we are

  863. God's

  864. handiwork,

  865. created in

  866. Christ Jesus

  867. to do

  868. good work,

  869. which God

  870. prepared in

  871. advance for

  872. us to

  873. do.

  874. See,

  875. as for

  876. you,

  877. God's

  878. got something

  879. for you

  880. that no

  881. one else

  882. can do

  883. except for

  884. you.

  885. God

  886. prepared it

  887. in advance

  888. for you.

  889. Even before

  890. you were

  891. born,

  892. God knew

  893. ways in

  894. which you

  895. could serve

  896. him that

  897. nobody else

  898. can.

  899. And that's

  900. true right

  901. now.

  902. And that's

  903. quite an

  904. awesome

  905. thought.

  906. That as

  907. free as

  908. this gift

  909. of God

  910. is,

  911. he's got

  912. stuff for

  913. us to do

  914. with that

  915. gift.

  916. that's

  917. an awesome

  918. thought.

  919. That's an

  920. awesome

  921. thought that

  922. nobody can

  923. do what

  924. God wants

  925. you to

  926. do except

  927. for you.

  928. And every

  929. single one

  930. on this

  931. room,

  932. every single

  933. person in

  934. this room

  935. this applies

  936. to,

  937. as for

  938. you,

  939. there are

  940. ways in

  941. which the

  942. kingdom can

  943. come through

  944. you that it

  945. can't come

  946. through anybody

  947. else.

  948. works.

  949. Because only

  950. you are

  951. you.

  952. And that's

  953. not just

  954. some naff

  955. piece of

  956. rhetoric.

  957. Only you

  958. actually will

  959. have the

  960. combination

  961. of skills,

  962. experiences

  963. through life

  964. and network

  965. of friends

  966. and relations

  967. that nobody

  968. else will

  969. have because

  970. they will

  971. be unique

  972. to you.

  973. That's for

  974. you.

  975. God's

  976. handiwork

  977. created in

  978. Christ Jesus

  979. to do good

  980. works.

  981. So what

  982. are you

  983. going to

  984. do?

  985. I just

  986. want you

  987. to imagine

  988. as we

  989. bring this

  990. to a

  991. close,

  992. I just

  993. want you

  994. to think

  995. for a

  996. moment and

  997. ask yourself

  998. the question,

  999. who in

  1000. your own

  1001. experience

  1002. played a

  1003. particularly

  1004. key role

  1005. in leading

  1006. you to

  1007. Christ?

  1008. Now my

  1009. guess is,

  1010. as I ask

  1011. you that

  1012. question,

  1013. you could

  1014. probably think

  1015. of quite a

  1016. lot of

  1017. different

  1018. people.

  1019. I'm just

  1020. asking you

  1021. to highlight

  1022. one person,

  1023. acknowledging

  1024. that there

  1025. are probably

  1026. several.

  1027. people.

  1028. It might

  1029. be a

  1030. family

  1031. member,

  1032. it might

  1033. have been

  1034. a parent

  1035. or a

  1036. grandparent,

  1037. an uncle,

  1038. it might

  1039. have been

  1040. a friend,

  1041. maybe it

  1042. was a

  1043. preacher who

  1044. preached a

  1045. message one

  1046. day that

  1047. you heard,

  1048. maybe at a

  1049. big festival,

  1050. Christian

  1051. festival,

  1052. you heard

  1053. the gospel

  1054. preach and

  1055. that was

  1056. the turning

  1057. point for

  1058. you.

  1059. Maybe it

  1060. was someone

  1061. that wrote

  1062. a Christian

  1063. book that

  1064. you picked

  1065. up once and

  1066. it made

  1067. you think.

  1068. As I say,

  1069. my guess is

  1070. you can

  1071. think of

  1072. lots of

  1073. different

  1074. people but

  1075. just hold

  1076. one person

  1077. in your

  1078. mind right

  1079. now who

  1080. played a

  1081. key role

  1082. in leading

  1083. you to

  1084. Jesus Christ

  1085. through their

  1086. words,

  1087. through their

  1088. actions,

  1089. through the

  1090. way they

  1091. lived their

  1092. life.

  1093. Now I

  1094. want you to

  1095. imagine that

  1096. you go to

  1097. that person

  1098. and you ask

  1099. the same

  1100. question that

  1101. I just put

  1102. to you just

  1103. then,

  1104. to name one

  1105. person that

  1106. was particularly

  1107. instrumental in

  1108. leading them to

  1109. Christ.

  1110. And you

  1111. were to go to

  1112. them.

  1113. And imagine,

  1114. you can see

  1115. where this is

  1116. going,

  1117. you go back

  1118. along the

  1119. chain and

  1120. you go back

  1121. and ask

  1122. them the

  1123. same,

  1124. that person

  1125. the same

  1126. question,

  1127. and then the

  1128. person that

  1129. they name

  1130. you go to

  1131. the same

  1132. question,

  1133. and then the

  1134. person that

  1135. they name

  1136. you go to

  1137. the same

  1138. question.

  1139. and so you

  1140. go back

  1141. through the

  1142. generations.

  1143. There is a

  1144. link through

  1145. history between

  1146. Christ and

  1147. his apostles

  1148. and you.

  1149. You have a

  1150. spiritual pedigree

  1151. that goes back

  1152. some 2,000

  1153. years.

  1154. Now I want to

  1155. put this question

  1156. to you now.

  1157. Who might it

  1158. be 20 years

  1159. from now,

  1160. 10 years

  1161. from now,

  1162. 5 years

  1163. from now,

  1164. who hypothetically

  1165. might be asked

  1166. the same

  1167. question,

  1168. and the

  1169. person that

  1170. they name

  1171. is you.

  1172. As for you,

  1173. let's pray.

  1174. Lord Jesus,

  1175. thank you for

  1176. this gift

  1177. of your

  1178. grace,

  1179. the gift

  1180. of good

  1181. news,

  1182. the gift

  1183. that we

  1184. are set

  1185. free from

  1186. death for

  1187. all eternity.

  1188. Thank you

  1189. that that

  1190. is a free

  1191. gift that you

  1192. give us,

  1193. that death

  1194. is behind

  1195. us,

  1196. that our

  1197. identity is

  1198. now in you,

  1199. that is a

  1200. free gift

  1201. that you

  1202. give us,

  1203. that we

  1204. cannot earn,

  1205. but you

  1206. freely give

  1207. to each

  1208. of us.

  1209. Thank you.

  1210. Lord,

  1211. help us

  1212. in our

  1213. everyday

  1214. lives,

  1215. not to

  1216. keep that

  1217. gift to

  1218. ourselves,

  1219. but through

  1220. our words

  1221. and through

  1222. our actions,

  1223. to pass

  1224. that on,

  1225. to share

  1226. that others

  1227. may have

  1228. it too.

  1229. Thank you

  1230. that you

  1231. call each

  1232. and every

  1233. one of us

  1234. to be part

  1235. of this

  1236. amazing

  1237. movement.

  1238. Thank you

  1239. that you

  1240. call each

  1241. and every

  1242. one of us

  1243. to know

  1244. that our

  1245. identity

  1246. is not

  1247. in what

  1248. we do,

  1249. but in

  1250. you.

  1251. In

  1252. Jesus'

  1253. name.

  1254. Amen.
