  1. And tonight we're going to look at Ephesians chapter 2 verses 1 to 10, which is what you

    Ephesians 2:1–10

  2. just had read to you, a bit of a giveaway.

  3. And I want to start just by doing an introduction which was provoked by me looking at and listening

  4. to Russell Herbert on Sunday, something in the chapter that goes before, where Paul talks

  5. about in verse 13, he says this, hang on, I've just lost my place, good start.

  6. But he talks about how the Ephesians heard the gospel and gave themselves to it.

  7. And I just wanted to say a word about the gospel.

  8. And before I start proper, I do just want to say that I'm going to give, you know, what

  9. they would call in a university a trigger warning, which I don't really believe in.

  10. But I just thought I would.

  11. And that is that what I'm going to do this evening is give some kind of exposition to these verses.

  12. And what you need to know is quite, some of this is quite hard stuff.

  13. And all I'm trying to do is give my feeble understanding of what I think is plainly written in scripture.

  14. Unfortunately, I think it's widely accepted today.

  15. And if you don't want to accept it, I mean, that's down to you.

  16. I can't make you believe anything.

  17. But just to warn you that some of this is, I think, difficult teaching and difficult for us to kind of think about.

  18. One of the things that's very clear to me about the gospel message is this, that you can't add to it, neither can you subtract from it by distorting it completely.

  19. In the early church, the early fathers of the church spent lots and lots of time trying to sort out what was heresy from what was mainline teaching.

  20. You have to understand that those early fathers didn't have the canon of the Bible in its complete form.

  21. It's one of the things that I think mystifies a lot of Christians today is that the early apostles only had the Old Testament to preach the gospel from.

  22. I mean, you all imagine that, you know, how would you go about it?

  23. I mean, don't put your hands up, but, you know, that's a good question.

  24. And the emphasis on the gospel in these verses and throughout the New Testament, as a matter of fact, is it's about an audio experience.

  25. It's about hearing.

  26. And all the way through the New Testament, the emphasis on the gospel has to be heard.

  27. As we'll see as we go through these verses, there's nothing that you can do to save yourself.

  28. But it's hearing the gospel, I suppose, the kind of main place for, I mean, there's several places, but I picked this one because I think it makes the point very, very clearly.

  29. Romans chapter 10 and verse 10 or thereabouts.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  30. And Paul says this.

  31. He says, consequently, he's talking about the gospel and he defines it earlier in chapter 10.

  32. If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

  33. And then he goes on and asks a really good question.

  34. He asks in verse 15, I think.

  35. He says, and how can they preach unless they are sent?

  36. As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.

  37. He says, but not all the Israelites accepted the good news.

  38. Isaiah said, Lord, who has believed our message?

  39. Then Paul says, consequently.

  40. That is, as a consequence of this question, how will people ever get the gospel if nobody preaches it to them?

  41. Paul says this.

  42. He said, consequently, faith comes from hearing the message.

  43. And the message is heard through the word of Christ.

  44. So the emphasis here is on hearing.

  45. And you know that in history, some of you will have heard this and very lightly, quietly applauded in your hearts this.

  46. But do you remember, for instance, St. Francis of Assisi, the kind of strange, spiritual Dr. Doolittle who taught to the animals.

  47. He said, preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.

  48. Why is that wrong?

  49. Faith comes through hearing.

  50. Words are important in the whole of scripture, but in particular, words are important in relation to the gospel.

  51. And today, we hear this stuff, I hear people doing all the time, kind of claiming the authority of the gospel to underline their personal cause and interest.

  52. See, the ramifications of the gospel, of course it has ramifications for the environment, but the gospel is not the gospel of the environment.

  53. There are many of you involved in doing great things, as far as I can best tell, in relation to social action.

  54. I heard an American preacher the other day, we need to display the fact that the social gospel is the gospel.

  55. It's not.

  56. The gospel is about Jesus Christ.

  57. And the reason why it's free but never cheap is that on the cross of Calvary, Jesus took what we deserve, died and rose again.

  58. And this is a very much, I was looking through a Sunday magazine recently and there was an advertisement for plastic surgery.

  59. And I wasn't considering it, but I looked at it and there were two photographs.

  60. And one was a picture of this lady before she had plastic surgery.

  61. It was her face, not anything else.

  62. And then next to that was a picture of her after plastic surgery.

  63. And I'd have to say, you know, she did look a bit better, if a little stretched.

  64. And this kind of before and after picture is very much, I think, what Paul is talking about in Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  65. And he starts out with these words, which if you give me a minute, I'll recover.

  66. He starts out with these words, which are not entirely encouraging, are they, for us?

  67. He says that, here we go, sorry, how do I tighten this up?

  68. Somebody help me.

  69. It's like watching a guy put up a deck chair.

  70. Is that all right?

  71. Yeah.

  72. Got it.

  73. Thank you.

  74. So, you didn't realise you got cabaret as well, did you?

  75. He starts out by saying this.

  76. For, sorry, as for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.

  77. I mean, that's a pretty wild thing to say to people who aren't dead.

  78. And Paul uses two very different words here.

  79. Transgressions is a translation of the Greek word paraptoma.

  80. And it basically means overstepping a mark, overstepping positively, willfully overstepping the mark.

  81. So, an example would be, when I was at college, only fellows at the college could stand on the grass in the quadrangle.

  82. And a big sign's up saying, you know, do not step on the grass.

  83. Well, of course, that was just a temptation to everybody.

  84. You know, people would stand there doing that, just to touch the grass.

  85. Well, that's paraptoma.

  86. That is willfully disobeying a regulation in the way that you overstepped the mark.

  87. That's what the word transgression is.

  88. The other word is your sins.

  89. And Paul here, many of you might know this, borrows on a word from the world of archery.

  90. And, as you know, archers load their bows and then fire and hopefully hit the target.

  91. And hamartia was the word when you missed the mark, missed the target.

  92. And here, I'm going to come back to that in a minute because I think it also reminds us of something else important.

  93. Paul says this, I've heard about, sorry, you're dead in your trespasses and sins,

  94. in which you used to live when you followed the ways of the world and the ruler of the kingdom of the air.

  95. And it's a clear reference to Satan.

  96. And the reason why this is important is that this is very much a before and after.

  97. I said to you last week by way of introduction that this gospel,

  98. if you could just give me a moment for a brief recap,

  99. this gospel is, sorry, this epistle is about who we are in Christ.

  100. And I said that is our primary identity as Christians.

  101. Then I said it tells us what we were before we became Christians,

  102. and this passage very directly speaks into that.

  103. And it tells us how we're supposed to live in the light of God's spiritual blessings.

  104. And then I asked the question, based on the end of verse 10 of chapter 1,

  105. is are we focused enough on God's promised future?

  106. Or are we, in the Western church, very this worldly?

  107. So Paul is basically telling them here that they've got big problems.

  108. And of course, just to remind you that the framework of these verses,

  109. you could put in these terms, diagnosis, prognosis, and cure.

  110. The diagnosis really fulfills what Paul's on about in the first three chapters of Romans,

  111. where he concludes by saying,

  112. all have sinned, no exception,

  113. all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  114. That's the diagnosis.

  115. The prognosis is death.

  116. And of course, medieval theologians banged on about this.

  117. We're really talking about two deaths,

  118. if you're Lazarus, three.

  119. The first death is the death that the writer of Genesis talks about.

  120. When you remember in Genesis chapters 2 and chapter 3,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  121. there they are in this marvelous garden,

  122. more beautiful than any garden you've ever been through in your lives.

  123. And God says to the man,

  124. the woman hasn't arrived at this point,

  125. he says to the man,

  126. you can do whatever you like in this garden,

  127. but you must not eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

  128. Do whatever you like, but don't do that.

  129. Then the word tells us it wasn't good for man to be alone,

  130. and so he came up with women.

  131. And it was in the garden,

  132. and one thing they couldn't do,

  133. and when God threatened this,

  134. he said, if you do this, you will surely die.

  135. So as we know, the fruit gets picked and eaten,

  136. and then the devil shows up in chapter 3.

  137. He says this,

  138. before the fruit is eaten,

  139. he says,

  140. you can't, you don't believe God.

  141. You won't die if you eat this fruit.

  142. Go ahead.

  143. So they do.

  144. And of course, part of the mystery is,

  145. they don't die.

  146. They stay on the planet,

  147. and in a very long chain of cause and effect,

  148. that's partly why we're here today.

  149. But they died spiritually.

  150. Their relationship with God was impaired.

  151. All have sinned,

  152. and fall short of the glory of God.

  153. You don't meet many people, do you,

  154. who claim to be sinless?

  155. Though I did meet one.

  156. I used to visit with his wife,

  157. who wasn't very well,

  158. and he was a kind of jobbing laborer, I guess.

  159. And he used to tell me,

  160. I've never sinned.

  161. I'm like, well, that's interesting.

  162. He said, yeah, I've never sinned.

  163. So I was going out through the door,

  164. front door,

  165. and there was all this wood stacked up by it.

  166. And we were just doing a bit of a refurb

  167. on what we call the crypt

  168. at the church I was serving at the time.

  169. So I said to him,

  170. any chance of some of that wood?

  171. His wife said, don't take that.

  172. He stole it from work.

  173. Look, so the diagnosis is we've all sinned.

  174. The prognosis is this two death thing.

  175. Your sin, unless it's dealt with,

  176. means that your relationship with God is broken.

  177. The second death,

  178. where we die physically,

  179. of course, in Christ,

  180. death won't be a brick wall for us.

  181. It will be a gateway into heaven.

  182. So Jesus in his death deals with,

  183. in his death deals with both these deaths.

  184. For as in Adam, all die.

  185. As in Jesus, all will be alive.

  186. So what human failures is Paul dealing with here?

  187. Well, the first thing is,

  188. he's dealing with delusion.

  189. See, I wouldn't mind a guess that

  190. most of us in this place,

  191. and in most churches ever,

  192. are slightly deluded

  193. by kind of comforting ourselves,

  194. even though we know we are sinful.

  195. We kind of play it down,

  196. oh, well, everybody does that, you know?

  197. We tell lies and then persuade ourselves

  198. there was something called white lies.

  199. Not saying that, you know,

  200. you might never tell a white lie,

  201. but on the whole,

  202. I think you're in a tricky area

  203. when you do that.

  204. And under delusion,

  205. I include the word denial.

  206. I think sometimes,

  207. a bit like Jack the Builder

  208. I was just talking to you about,

  209. we can be in denial

  210. about who we are

  211. and about the way we behave.

  212. I found this particularly true

  213. when I was a chaplain

  214. in a psychiatric hospital

  215. dealing with people who had addictions.

  216. You might be somebody with an addiction.

  217. You will know that lying

  218. becomes second nature to you

  219. when you have an addiction.

  220. And you even deny there's a problem.

  221. I remember once trying to offer

  222. a little corrective therapy

  223. to my sister who was going

  224. through a hard time in life,

  225. who seemed to me to be

  226. a little over-dependent on white wine.

  227. Let me say, she didn't say,

  228. Mike, I really appreciate your feedback.

  229. She was mad.

  230. Denied it.

  231. Didn't want to know.

  232. But I thought a bottle and a half

  233. of white wine every night

  234. wasn't headed in the right direction.

  235. She thought I was a killjoy.

  236. The second human failure

  237. that Paul deals with here

  238. is comparison.

  239. So we said that

  240. the word for sin

  241. is that word hamartia.

  242. It means when an archer

  243. misses the mark.

  244. And what I want to ask you is,

  245. I mean, suppose you were,

  246. I mean, you can go to center parks

  247. and never go with archery, right?

  248. I mean, be careful.

  249. And suppose you had a go for the first time

  250. and you fire ten arrows

  251. and nine of them missed.

  252. And one of them stuck in the target

  253. right on the edge, right?

  254. And then somebody who knows

  255. about archery came,

  256. did ten arrows,

  257. nine of them straight into the bullseye

  258. and one of them

  259. just in a lower place.

  260. What we do is,

  261. very often,

  262. we think,

  263. okay, you know,

  264. I sin,

  265. but there are plenty of people

  266. who are worse than me.

  267. You know, I can name them,

  268. I mean, not me,

  269. but I mean,

  270. you can name them if you like.

  271. But the point that

  272. is implied by this word is,

  273. it doesn't matter

  274. how many arrows you hit the target,

  275. if you miss with one,

  276. you've sinned.

  277. And comparison,

  278. I mean, my granny used to say to me,

  279. comparisons are odious.

  280. So if I console myself

  281. simply by comparing myself

  282. with somebody

  283. who I judge to be worse than me,

  284. what is that saying?

  285. I don't get to say very much,

  286. do you?

  287. All have sinned

  288. and fall short

  289. of the glory of God.

  290. And there's something

  291. slightly more complicated,

  292. what I call

  293. distorted anthropology.

  294. And that is

  295. what the Bible teaches us,

  296. sorry,

  297. what

  298. anthropologists

  299. teach us

  300. about human beings'

  301. basic nature.

  302. First thing

  303. is that

  304. we have to

  305. bear in mind,

  306. and just let me say

  307. before

  308. you start to

  309. choke,

  310. I am not

  311. in any way

  312. writing off

  313. all psychology.

  314. Okay?

  315. But I think

  316. I have to say

  317. that one of the

  318. distortions

  319. of

  320. anthropology

  321. has come from

  322. the world

  323. of psychology.

  324. psychology.

  325. There are,

  326. I was reading

  327. an article

  328. in the

  329. Journal of

  330. Psychology,

  331. and basically

  332. the person

  333. was

  334. saying

  335. that

  336. one of the

  337. ideas

  338. that

  339. contemporary

  340. psychology

  341. supports

  342. is something

  343. I think

  344. is a really

  345. bad idea,

  346. particularly

  347. when it comes

  348. to ethics,

  349. and it's

  350. the idea

  351. of autonomy.

  352. Autonomy,

  353. you know,

  354. is a

  355. makeup of

  356. two

  357. Greek words,

  358. auto and

  359. nomos,

  360. which means

  361. self-rule.

  362. Autonomy

  363. is the kind

  364. of thinking

  365. in social ethics

  366. which says

  367. I can do

  368. whatever I want

  369. as long as

  370. it doesn't

  371. harm anybody

  372. else.

  373. Wrong.

  374. I mean,

  375. you can never,

  376. ever,

  377. ever

  378. assess

  379. what your

  380. behavior's

  381. impact will

  382. be on

  383. another

  384. person.

  385. And this

  386. article,

  387. the guy

  388. wrote this,

  389. he said,

  390. autonomy

  391. makes our

  392. moral behavior

  393. more effective.

  394. I mean,

  395. pardon me,

  396. I wanted to

  397. say,

  398. what planet

  399. is he

  400. coming from?

  401. There are

  402. a lot of

  403. more conservative

  404. psychologists

  405. and anthropologists

  406. who think

  407. that part of

  408. our problem

  409. today is

  410. too much

  411. autonomy

  412. in the

  413. name of

  414. personal

  415. freedom.

  416. Second

  417. thing that

  418. I think

  419. 20th century

  420. psychology

  421. has had

  422. an influence

  423. on is

  424. the idea

  425. of universal

  426. goodness.

  427. Bible

  428. says all

  429. have sinned

  430. and fall

  431. short of

  432. the glory

  433. of God

  434. from the

  435. very earliest

  436. days,

  437. the days

  438. of the man

  439. and the woman

  440. in the garden.

  441. No,

  442. no,

  443. no,

  444. say 20th

  445. century

  446. people,

  447. you're

  448. good.

  449. And you

  450. need to

  451. focus on

  452. the fact

  453. that you're

  454. good.

  455. And you

  456. could even,

  457. I've read

  458. this,

  459. you know,

  460. some people

  461. will tell

  462. you,

  463. stand in

  464. front of

  465. a mirror

  466. in the

  467. morning and

  468. tell yourself

  469. how brilliant

  470. you are.

  471. I mean,

  472. you know,

  473. I don't know

  474. whether Stephen

  475. Hawkins did

  476. that or

  477. Elon Musk

  478. or any of

  479. these people.

  480. But,

  481. I mean,

  482. not only

  483. this,

  484. but very

  485. often now

  486. in schools

  487. this kind

  488. of child

  489. centred

  490. teaching

  491. I think

  492. can have

  493. the impact

  494. of

  495. implying

  496. to our

  497. children

  498. that they're

  499. not only

  500. good,

  501. but they're

  502. great.

  503. And people

  504. like Hillary

  505. Clinton

  506. can go

  507. around,

  508. sorry,

  509. Michelle Obama

  510. can go

  511. around

  512. schools

  513. telling

  514. people

  515. very popular

  516. kind of

  517. misconception

  518. I think

  519. that we

  520. live with

  521. in the

  522. 21st century.

  523. You can

  524. be whatever

  525. you want

  526. to be,

  527. right?

  528. I don't

  529. know if

  530. that's

  531. dangerous,

  532. but it

  533. clearly

  534. isn't

  535. even true.

  536. You can't

  537. be whatever

  538. you want

  539. to be.

  540. We've

  541. all got

  542. our

  543. limitations.

  544. I would

  545. not make

  546. a prima

  547. ballerina.

  548. You don't

  549. even sit

  550. there

  551. imagining

  552. it.

  553. And then

  554. this guy

  555. Frank

  556. Ferreidi

  557. who I

  558. read his

  559. book

  560. and it

  561. was called

  562. Therapy

  563. Culture.

  564. And I

  565. liked the

  566. book so

  567. much that

  568. I

  569. shamelessly

  570. used my

  571. membership

  572. at the

  573. House of

  574. Lords to

  575. invite him

  576. out for

  577. dinner so

  578. I could

  579. talk to

  580. him and

  581. pick his

  582. brain.

  583. And

  584. actually

  585. I still

  586. agree with

  587. his book.

  588. It's just

  589. I didn't

  590. get it

  591. off.

  592. It wasn't

  593. easy.

  594. I don't

  595. think he

  596. had much

  597. time for

  598. religion and

  599. I was

  600. slightly

  601. scornful for

  602. some

  603. sociology.

  604. But he

  605. basically

  606. complained that

  607. the world

  608. has become

  609. a place

  610. where everything

  611. is processed

  612. through the

  613. past.

  614. So

  615. whatever's

  616. wrong with

  617. you, it's

  618. somewhere in

  619. your past.

  620. I mean

  621. even Job

  622. had to be

  623. subject to

  624. that from

  625. his three

  626. friends,

  627. didn't he?

  628. You've got to

  629. search your

  630. heart, Job.

  631. There's

  632. something

  633. there.

  634. And yet

  635. the Bible

  636. describes Job

  637. as a

  638. righteous man.

  639. There wasn't

  640. anything there.

  641. And

  642. therapy

  643. culture, I

  644. think, is a

  645. way of

  646. basically, my

  647. problems are a

  648. product of my

  649. past lived

  650. experience.

  651. And some of

  652. them are.

  653. There's no

  654. doubt about

  655. that.

  656. Some of

  657. you have

  658. had horrible

  659. things happen

  660. to you.

  661. And you

  662. can't pretend

  663. that that's

  664. not going to

  665. affect you.

  666. I mean, it

  667. doesn't have to

  668. affect you

  669. forever.

  670. But it's

  671. going to

  672. affect you

  673. short-term,

  674. medium-term,

  675. and without

  676. Christ might

  677. affect you

  678. forever.

  679. The fourth

  680. failure that

  681. Jesus deals

  682. with here is

  683. legalism.

  684. Legalism is

  685. this idea

  686. that if I

  687. can, it

  688. basically lies

  689. behind the

  690. idea of

  691. earning my

  692. salvation.

  693. If I do

  694. this, if I

  695. behave like

  696. this, even

  697. if I put up

  698. a mask like

  699. this, I'll

  700. be okay.

  701. me.

  702. And Paul

  703. absolutely

  704. nails that.

  705. He says, it's

  706. by grace you've

  707. been saved, not

  708. by works.

  709. A work of

  710. the law is

  711. anything that

  712. we do that

  713. we think allows

  714. us to make a

  715. claim on God.

  716. Paul emphatically

  717. says here, and

  718. throughout his

  719. epistles, this

  720. is not the way

  721. you are saved.

  722. You are saved

  723. through the

  724. grace of God.

  725. And I

  726. think, I

  727. mean, you

  728. know, I've

  729. been around

  730. churches for

  731. years, some

  732. of you are

  733. saying too

  734. long, but I've

  735. been around

  736. them a lot.

  737. And one of

  738. the things I've

  739. discovered is

  740. grace is an

  741. idea that

  742. people find

  743. really difficult

  744. to lay hold

  745. on.

  746. They understand

  747. what it means.

  748. They've been

  749. told many, many

  750. times from the

  751. pulpit, it is

  752. God's love shown

  753. to you even

  754. though you

  755. don't deserve

  756. it.

  757. And yet

  758. somehow, they

  759. still feel they

  760. got to earn

  761. it.

  762. You see what

  763. Paul says

  764. here.

  765. He says

  766. that you're

  767. not saved by

  768. works so that

  769. you can't

  770. boast.

  771. One of the

  772. things that

  773. really shocks

  774. me about

  775. social media

  776. is the

  777. number of

  778. clergy who

  779. go on it

  780. basically

  781. self-promoting.

  782. I mean, am

  783. I wrong to

  784. be cautious

  785. about that?

  786. You know, I

  787. couldn't imagine,

  788. you know, I

  789. would put a

  790. big advert on

  791. social media if

  792. I was going to

  793. go and speak at

  794. some church,

  795. maybe yours.

  796. It just

  797. would never

  798. occur to me

  799. to do that.

  800. I feel, you

  801. know, that.

  802. I don't think

  803. that kind of

  804. self-promotion,

  805. I don't find

  806. that easy to

  807. square with my

  808. understanding of

  809. the gospel.

  810. Okay, I mean a

  811. measure of that,

  812. you know, if you

  813. become a new

  814. grandparent, you

  815. know, fine, have

  816. a photograph of

  817. yourself with a

  818. little bundle,

  819. you know, and

  820. I think my

  821. wife and I are

  822. a bit blasé

  823. with that now,

  824. we've got 16

  825. grandchildren.

  826. He boasted.

  827. Look,

  828. legalism is a

  829. massive problem

  830. in the churches.

  831. No, I'm not

  832. talking about

  833. unsaved people,

  834. I'm talking about

  835. people who are

  836. saved.

  837. Just what I

  838. said earlier,

  839. if you add to

  840. the gospel,

  841. you take away

  842. from it.

  843. And finally,

  844. spiritual

  845. malaise.

  846. I, you

  847. know, Paul

  848. says this,

  849. right at the

  850. end in verse

  851. 10, he says

  852. you've been

  853. saved for a

  854. purpose.

  855. In fact, he

  856. says, you

  857. are God's, on

  858. the reading we

  859. had, it said

  860. God's handiwork.

  861. Most versions

  862. of the Bible

  863. say you're God's

  864. workmanship.

  865. You know, the

  866. psalmist wrote

  867. that we're

  868. fearfully and

  869. wonderfully made.

  870. I don't have a

  871. problem with you

  872. standing in front

  873. of a mirror and

  874. reminding yourself

  875. of that, because

  876. when you understand

  877. that, it might

  878. make you a notch

  879. more humble.

  880. Fearfully and

  881. wonderfully made.

  882. And you're

  883. fearfully and

  884. wonderfully made

  885. for God's

  886. purpose.

  887. In Christ,

  888. you have been

  889. remade.

  890. And you

  891. will not be

  892. saved by your

  893. good works.

  894. Paul's very

  895. clear about that.

  896. But you will

  897. be saved for

  898. the good works

  899. that God has

  900. prepared for you

  901. in advance to

  902. do.

  903. I'm always

  904. shocked about

  905. the weight that

  906. a lot of clergy

  907. colleagues have

  908. on their shoulders.

  909. I don't often

  910. make special

  911. pleading for the

  912. clergy.

  913. But I do

  914. understand this,

  915. that in most

  916. churches, we've

  917. talked about this

  918. here, talked

  919. about it in lots

  920. of places, at

  921. the 80-20 rule.

  922. 20% of the

  923. people supply

  924. 80% of the

  925. money.

  926. 20% of the

  927. people supply

  928. 80% of the

  929. horsepower.

  930. And 80%

  931. watch on,

  932. maybe gratefully,

  933. week by week.

  934. Not saying they

  935. don't do some

  936. good works beyond

  937. the church, of

  938. course not.

  939. And I want to

  940. say, you know,

  941. if you're involved

  942. in a major

  943. charity which

  944. takes up a lot

  945. of your time

  946. outside the

  947. church, well

  948. God bless you,

  949. that's good,

  950. that is a work

  951. that God has

  952. prepared for you

  953. in advance to

  954. do.

  955. But the

  956. church needs

  957. more of you

  958. to step up

  959. and fill some

  960. of those vacancies

  961. which nearly

  962. every church

  963. has.

  964. You really

  965. need to break

  966. a threshold

  967. of about 250

  968. members as a

  969. church, active,

  970. saved members,

  971. before you can

  972. be certain of

  973. supplying people

  974. to do the

  975. ministries that

  976. you feel called

  977. to do as a

  978. church.

  979. I think some

  980. of you need

  981. to think a

  982. little more

  983. carefully about

  984. whether you

  985. really understand

  986. that the

  987. workmanship that

  988. God has put

  989. into you has a

  990. purpose.

  991. And the purpose

  992. is this,

  993. that you would

  994. understand his

  995. grace and you

  996. would understand

  997. that you are

  998. saved by his

  999. grace.

  1000. Somebody wrote

  1001. these words and

  1002. they said,

  1003. grace means the

  1004. end of earning,

  1005. but not the end

  1006. of effort.

  1007. that's just

  1008. mirroring, I

  1009. think, in the

  1010. minds of the

  1011. person that

  1012. wrote it.

  1013. What's written

  1014. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:10

  1015. chapter 2

  1016. verse 10,

  1017. and it's

  1018. this,

  1019. that we are

  1020. saved not by

  1021. good works,

  1022. but for good

  1023. works.

  1024. I wonder if

  1025. the Holy

  1026. Spirit isn't

  1027. speaking to you

  1028. about that,

  1029. that actually

  1030. there is

  1031. something,

  1032. you know,

  1033. I mean I may

  1034. be preaching to

  1035. the choir, I

  1036. don't know,

  1037. but we do

  1038. in an effort

  1039. to bring the

  1040. gospel I

  1041. talked about

  1042. at the

  1043. beginning to

  1044. this world

  1045. which is

  1046. broken and

  1047. breaking.

  1048. We do need

  1049. people to

  1050. step up and

  1051. fulfill the

  1052. ministries.

  1053. When I was

  1054. a curate,

  1055. it was just

  1056. when the

  1057. season of

  1058. family services

  1059. was starting,

  1060. you know,

  1061. I mean,

  1062. frankly,

  1063. as a clergy

  1064. person,

  1065. it would have

  1066. been my

  1067. personal

  1068. nightmare,

  1069. you know,

  1070. getting everybody

  1071. together,

  1072. trying to

  1073. say something

  1074. through a

  1075. kid's talk

  1076. that might

  1077. provoke

  1078. something in

  1079. the adults,

  1080. you know,

  1081. it's a rare

  1082. gift.

  1083. And I

  1084. was in

  1085. an archdeaconry,

  1086. it's quite,

  1087. you know,

  1088. quite a large

  1089. area,

  1090. subsection,

  1091. and there

  1092. were only

  1093. three curates

  1094. around,

  1095. and the

  1096. assumption

  1097. was,

  1098. if you're

  1099. under 40,

  1100. you must be

  1101. great at

  1102. family services.

  1103. so every

  1104. Sunday I

  1105. was shipped

  1106. out from

  1107. our parish

  1108. church to

  1109. go and do

  1110. family services

  1111. here and

  1112. there,

  1113. the vicar

  1114. got me to

  1115. do our

  1116. monthly family

  1117. service every

  1118. month,

  1119. I read a

  1120. book that

  1121. taught me to

  1122. draw cartoons,

  1123. and you know,

  1124. I became a

  1125. bit,

  1126. you remember

  1127. Rolf Harris

  1128. used to talk

  1129. and draw,

  1130. well,

  1131. it's the only

  1132. similarity to

  1133. Rolf Harris I

  1134. want to go

  1135. into,

  1136. talk and draw,

  1137. and you know,

  1138. okay,

  1139. that worked

  1140. okay,

  1141. and,

  1142. and,

  1143. so,

  1144. I would do

  1145. these family

  1146. services,

  1147. and,

  1148. I have to

  1149. say,

  1150. you know,

  1151. I kind of

  1152. wondered about

  1153. them,

  1154. I wondered

  1155. whether really

  1156. they were the

  1157. right thing,

  1158. and it was

  1159. only when I

  1160. said to the

  1161. vicar,

  1162. I think there

  1163. may be

  1164. people in

  1165. the congregation

  1166. who might

  1167. have more

  1168. of a gifting

  1169. for this,

  1170. and more

  1171. of a passion

  1172. for it than

  1173. I do,

  1174. it looked at

  1175. me as I was

  1176. completely

  1177. bonkers,

  1178. so he said,

  1179. do you have

  1180. anybody in

  1181. mind,

  1182. so I reeled

  1183. off a few

  1184. names,

  1185. so he said,

  1186. okay,

  1187. you go around

  1188. and visit

  1189. them and ask

  1190. them,

  1191. so I did,

  1192. they all

  1193. said yes,

  1194. and our

  1195. family services,

  1196. I think,

  1197. took a turn

  1198. for the good,

  1199. not just in

  1200. our church,

  1201. but across

  1202. the archer

  1203. deaconry as

  1204. well.

  1205. Friends,

  1206. I want to

  1207. ask you three

  1208. things this

  1209. Lent for you

  1210. to take away

  1211. with you

  1212. tonight.

  1213. First thing

  1214. is this,

  1215. do I

  1216. really get

  1217. that my

  1218. sins are

  1219. forgiven,

  1220. or do I

  1221. still live

  1222. under a

  1223. cloud of

  1224. guilt?

  1225. Let me

  1226. let that

  1227. one settle

  1228. for a

  1229. moment.

  1230. Do I

  1231. really know

  1232. that my

  1233. sins are

  1234. forgiven,

  1235. or do I

  1236. still live

  1237. under a

  1238. cloud of

  1239. guilt?

  1240. I remember

  1241. a lady

  1242. called

  1243. Pat in

  1244. my first

  1245. parish,

  1246. where I was

  1247. a cure,

  1248. the same

  1249. parish I've

  1250. just been

  1251. talking to

  1252. you about,

  1253. who did

  1254. the most

  1255. amazing job

  1256. of looking

  1257. after her

  1258. mum.

  1259. She gave

  1260. up her

  1261. job,

  1262. took a

  1263. pittance

  1264. of a

  1265. pension,

  1266. and really

  1267. looked after

  1268. her mum,

  1269. and trust

  1270. me,

  1271. her mum

  1272. was not

  1273. easy.

  1274. She looked

  1275. after her

  1276. and looked

  1277. after her,

  1278. and went

  1279. on for

  1280. two and

  1281. a half,

  1282. three years,

  1283. and at

  1284. the end

  1285. of it,

  1286. the mother

  1287. became so

  1288. difficultly

  1289. ill,

  1290. doubling

  1291. incontinency

  1292. and all

  1293. that,

  1294. she had

  1295. to go

  1296. into

  1297. hospital.

  1298. Pat

  1299. lived with

  1300. guilt for

  1301. years after

  1302. that,

  1303. because she

  1304. promised her

  1305. mum,

  1306. I'll never

  1307. let you

  1308. go into

  1309. hospital.

  1310. for

  1311. different

  1312. reasons,

  1313. there'll

  1314. be a

  1315. few

  1316. pats

  1317. in the

  1318. house

  1319. tonight.

  1320. People

  1321. who know

  1322. the facts

  1323. of the

  1324. gospel,

  1325. but don't

  1326. know the

  1327. healing power

  1328. of the

  1329. gospel.

  1330. One of

  1331. the things,

  1332. one of the

  1333. reasons I was

  1334. telling you

  1335. about these

  1336. family services

  1337. was that one

  1338. of the

  1339. things was

  1340. I used

  1341. to think,

  1342. you know,

  1343. we can't

  1344. go through

  1345. a lot of

  1346. dull liturgy

  1347. with these

  1348. kids.

  1349. So what I

  1350. would do

  1351. is I

  1352. get a

  1353. blackboard

  1354. and I

  1355. shout out

  1356. to the

  1357. kids,

  1358. what have

  1359. you done

  1360. wrong this

  1361. week?

  1362. And,

  1363. you know,

  1364. kids would

  1365. shout out

  1366. stuff like,

  1367. I wrote a

  1368. rude name on

  1369. the back

  1370. of a

  1371. teacher

  1372. in chalk.

  1373. I stole

  1374. snacks from

  1375. mum's

  1376. store.

  1377. All this

  1378. stuff,

  1379. I write

  1380. them on

  1381. the board.

  1382. And I

  1383. say,

  1384. right,

  1385. are we

  1386. going to

  1387. say sorry

  1388. now,

  1389. children?

  1390. All say

  1391. sorry.

  1392. Say a

  1393. little prayer

  1394. and then

  1395. I would

  1396. get the

  1397. board

  1398. rubber and

  1399. rub all

  1400. the sins

  1401. off.

  1402. I say

  1403. to them,

  1404. that's

  1405. what Jesus

  1406. had done

  1407. for you

  1408. on the

  1409. cross of

  1410. Calvary.

  1411. It

  1412. doesn't

  1413. always work,

  1414. you know,

  1415. a girl

  1416. said to

  1417. me,

  1418. a little

  1419. girl

  1420. said to

  1421. me,

  1422. she said,

  1423. why did

  1424. you say

  1425. God was

  1426. cross at

  1427. Calvary?

  1428. Shut up.

  1429. Listen,

  1430. I want you

  1431. to think

  1432. about this,

  1433. this Lent.

  1434. Do I

  1435. really know

  1436. that my

  1437. sins are

  1438. forgiven?

  1439. and the

  1440. one way

  1441. that I

  1442. will really

  1443. know is

  1444. whether I

  1445. can let

  1446. go of

  1447. guilt in

  1448. my life.

  1449. I mean,

  1450. there may

  1451. be some

  1452. reasons why

  1453. you really

  1454. ought to be

  1455. guilty and

  1456. you've not

  1457. confessed that

  1458. guilt to

  1459. God.

  1460. Maybe this

  1461. Lent,

  1462. maybe this

  1463. Lent,

  1464. you could

  1465. come clean.

  1466. It's not

  1467. that God

  1468. doesn't know

  1469. about it,

  1470. it's just

  1471. that he

  1472. needs you

  1473. to tell

  1474. him about

  1475. it.

  1476. Second,

  1477. can I

  1478. truly accept

  1479. God's

  1480. grace?

  1481. Or is

  1482. there

  1483. something

  1484. lurking in

  1485. me that

  1486. wants to

  1487. earn my

  1488. way into

  1489. heaven?

  1490. Which is

  1491. by grace

  1492. you've been

  1493. saved,

  1494. so that

  1495. none of

  1496. you can

  1497. boast?

  1498. Can I

  1499. truly

  1500. accept

  1501. the

  1502. nature

  1503. of

  1504. God's

  1505. agape

  1506. love for

  1507. me?

  1508. That

  1509. though I

  1510. don't

  1511. deserve it,

  1512. God

  1513. loved me

  1514. enough

  1515. to send

  1516. his only

  1517. son onto

  1518. a cross

  1519. of Calvary

  1520. to suffer

  1521. the most

  1522. violent

  1523. way of

  1524. killing

  1525. somebody

  1526. ever

  1527. invented?

  1528. And the

  1529. third thing

  1530. is,

  1531. you think

  1532. about you

  1533. and your

  1534. church,

  1535. I'm so

  1536. thrilled that

  1537. different

  1538. churches are

  1539. represented

  1540. here tonight.

  1541. Am I

  1542. working hard

  1543. on those

  1544. good works

  1545. God has

  1546. prepared

  1547. in advance

  1548. for me?

  1549. Do you

  1550. know what?

  1551. Just

  1552. focusing on

  1553. those three

  1554. questions

  1555. in Lent

  1556. creates an

  1557. agenda for

  1558. you and

  1559. for your

  1560. church which

  1561. is so

  1562. exciting.

  1563. Things

  1564. will be

  1565. different

  1566. if you

  1567. allow God

  1568. to speak

  1569. to you

  1570. through

  1571. those

  1572. questions.

  1573. So I

  1574. just want

  1575. to hold

  1576. a moment

  1577. there and

  1578. I'm going

  1579. to read

  1580. those

  1581. questions

  1582. out to

  1583. you again

  1584. and then

  1585. I'm going

  1586. to say

  1587. a prayer

  1588. and then

  1589. I'm going

  1590. to ask

  1591. you to

  1592. turn to

  1593. somebody

  1594. hopefully

  1595. you don't

  1596. know

  1597. and just

  1598. maybe have

  1599. a brief

  1600. discussion

  1601. about what

  1602. do I

  1603. make of

  1604. these

  1605. questions?

  1606. Is there

  1607. anything

  1608. there where

  1609. I feel

  1610. God is

  1611. just prodding

  1612. my soul?

  1613. Here they

  1614. are.

  1615. Do I

  1616. really know

  1617. that my

  1618. sins are

  1619. forgiven

  1620. or do

  1621. I still

  1622. live under

  1623. a cloud

  1624. of guilt?

  1625. Can I

  1626. truly

  1627. accept

  1628. God's

  1629. grace

  1630. shown in

  1631. Jesus

  1632. Christ

  1633. shown

  1634. supremely

  1635. on the

  1636. cross of

  1637. Calvary?

  1638. Three,

  1639. am I

  1640. working

  1641. hard

  1642. on those

  1643. good works

  1644. God has

  1645. prepared

  1646. in advance

  1647. for me?

  1648. Our

  1649. gracious

  1650. Father,

  1651. we

  1652. thank you

  1653. that

  1654. though we

  1655. don't deserve

  1656. it,

  1657. you poured

  1658. out your

  1659. love for

  1660. us on the

  1661. cross of

  1662. Calvary.

  1663. I

  1664. sometimes

  1665. think about

  1666. the cross

  1667. and close

  1668. my eyes

  1669. and try

  1670. to see

  1671. those cruel

  1672. nails and

  1673. crown of

  1674. thorns

  1675. and Jesus

  1676. crucified

  1677. for me.

  1678. Lord,

  1679. it is so

  1680. amazing,

  1681. it is almost

  1682. unbelievable.

  1683. So we

  1684. pray for

  1685. that gift

  1686. of faith,

  1687. Lord,

  1688. open our

  1689. eyes,

  1690. reveal

  1691. yourself

  1692. to us

  1693. in new

  1694. ways this

  1695. Lent.

  1696. Lord,

  1697. we're so

  1698. glad that

  1699. we're saved

  1700. by your

  1701. grace because

  1702. if it were

  1703. down to

  1704. our efforts,

  1705. frankly,

  1706. they'd be a

  1707. little patchy.

  1708. And

  1709. Father,

  1710. we pray

  1711. that you

  1712. would help

  1713. us understand

  1714. that you've

  1715. designed us,

  1716. you've

  1717. created us,

  1718. we're your

  1719. workmanship.

  1720. And in

  1721. us,

  1722. you are

  1723. preparing us

  1724. for the

  1725. good work

  1726. you want

  1727. us to

  1728. do in

  1729. your

  1730. church

  1731. and in

  1732. your

  1733. kingdom.

  1734. Lord,

  1735. would you

  1736. touch

  1737. touch your

  1738. people

  1739. tonight,

  1740. those who

  1741. are ready,

  1742. Lord,

  1743. to receive

  1744. your touch.

  1745. Praying,

  1746. Lord,

  1747. for those

  1748. who don't

  1749. know if

  1750. they're

  1751. saved.

  1752. Praying for

  1753. those who

  1754. know it in

  1755. their heads

  1756. but doubt it

  1757. in their

  1758. hearts.

  1759. Praying for

  1760. those who

  1761. are still

  1762. stuck with

  1763. the idea

  1764. of earning

  1765. their way

  1766. into heaven.

  1767. Futile

  1768. effort.

  1769. And Lord,

  1770. praying for

  1771. those whose

  1772. malaise means

  1773. that they sit

  1774. in church and

  1775. watch on while

  1776. other people

  1777. exhaust themselves.

  1778. And Father,

  1779. as we learn

  1780. later in this

  1781. amazing epistle,

  1782. you have given

  1783. all your

  1784. adopted

  1785. children

  1786. gifts.

  1787. Gifts

  1788. that they

  1789. may honour

  1790. you,

  1791. that they

  1792. may serve

  1793. the church,

  1794. and Lord,

  1795. that they

  1796. might be used

  1797. to be your

  1798. presence in

  1799. the world.

  1800. So,

  1801. Father,

  1802. thank you

  1803. for your

  1804. word.

  1805. Lord,

  1806. help us

  1807. to read,

  1808. mark,

  1809. learn,

  1810. and inwardly

  1811. digest it,

  1812. that it

  1813. may show

  1814. forth in

  1815. our lives

  1816. to the

  1817. glory of

  1818. your

  1819. wonderful

  1820. name.

  1821. Amen.
