  1. Thirty years ago, I was on a plane in O'Hare Airport in Chicago, when this very cool guy, beautiful suit, expensive hand luggage, came into the cabin.

  2. ! I was feeling amazingly blessed as I managed to get my ticket bumped up into business class.

  3. After paying a pittance to travel. So I was sitting there, I got up because he had the window seat.

  4. And like Americans do, he thrust out his hand and told me his name.

  5. So I responded by telling him my name.

  6. And he said to me, it's the kind of question that clergy don't really like to be asked when they're in Mufti.

  7. He said, what do you do for a living?

  8. And I was tempted to say, I'm in middle management in some national organisation.

  9. But I sort of thought if I said that, I'd hear a cock crow in my head or something and it might break down.

  10. So he's kind of stiffened.

  11. He said to me, you need to know I have nothing to do with religion.

  12. He said, I've never had a religious thought in my life.

  13. But you have one minute to tell me why it's important to you.

  14. What would you say?

  15. What would you say?

  16. I mean, I can't remember what I said.

  17. It's 30 years ago now.

  18. And I can just about remember why I'm standing here at the moment.

  19. And he proceeded to drain the liquid contents of the business class cabin and fell into a coma.

  20. And we said goodbye to each other.

  21. We didn't exchange telephone numbers or anything like that.

  22. And I did think about him once or twice.

  23. And I mean, I can't say that faithfully I prayed for him, that whatever I said would influence him.

  24. But I did think of him occasionally.

  25. And when I thought of him, I thought to myself, I wonder what kind of persons Paul had in mind when he said, you know, God can do infinitely more than we ever dare to ask or imagine.

  26. And it would be maybe 10, 12, possibly 15 years later.

  27. In the days of faxes.

  28. Remember them?

  29. And suddenly my machine started to whir about 5.30 in the evening.

  30. And he was from this guy.

  31. He said, you might remember me.

  32. We sat next to each other.

  33. He said, I appreciate I was a little antisocial.

  34. But I thought you might like to know.

  35. And you might even like to pray for me.

  36. Because tonight I'm being baptised.

  37. And it was in a church actually in Brussels that I knew quite well.

  38. And I knew the minister there.

  39. And the minister there relayed to me what an amazing turnaround there had been in the mind of this man.

  40. And the reason he was so kind of embittered and so unwilling to listen to the gospel was that his 21-year-old beautiful daughter had died of leukemia some two or three years before I bumped into him.

  41. And tonight one of the things we'll hear about from verse 1 in this passage in a few moments.

  42. is

  43. what do we do?

  44. Where do we turn

  45. when bad things in life happen to us?

  46. Before that, I just want to do a quick recap on the things we were talking about last week.

  47. And I said there were three things that I thought, you know, it's up to you, but three things I thought that you might like to talk about at this Lent.

  48. One was, do I really believe?

  49. Have I really processed the truth that if I am in Christ, as Paul would put it, I am forgiven?

  50. Or do I still live under a cloud of guilt?

  51. Two, can I truly accept God's grace, this idea that God loves me even though I may have lived a life which would not normally deserve his love?

  52. And thirdly, this is a question for believers only, am I working hard on those good works that God has prepared in advance for me?

  53. And I said, you know, there's three good questions for Lent that you could think about, and I don't know if you have, but I would suggest you might.

  54. I came across this week in my preparations another way to look at the Ephesian literature.

  55. And this pattern basically divides the whole epistle into three sections.

  56. The first section is chapters 1 to 3.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  57. Where Paul is talking about the wealth of the believer.

  58. You remember in chapter 1 we're told that in Christ God has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual gift.

  59. Then the person who wrote this framework up said,

  60. we move from the wealth of the believer to the walk of the believer.

  61. That is, given that this is what you believe, this is the way that you should behave.

  62. And our speaker in church on Sunday made the very good point that a lot of churches seem to get the idea that if you want to come amongst us,

  63. you better behave.

  64. In the hope that if you come amongst us, some of it may rub and you come to believe.

  65. And he was questioning whether or not we should be like that.

  66. And you know that phrase that's used in churches frequently,

  67. all are welcome.

  68. And I attended this Methodist church in Cornwall, which some friends of ours went to.

  69. It was this rather dear Methodist lay preacher with a very fine Cornish brogue.

  70. And he would say, after the service today, there'll be a sausage sizzle.

  71. And my daughter, Mahalia, will be singing at it.

  72. All are welcome.

  73. I mean, I have no idea how many people went.

  74. I didn't go myself.

  75. But we say all are welcome.

  76. But I think, you know, there may be occasions when we really need to face the truth.

  77. That actually, in a lot of churches, a lot of people who show up in goodwill don't feel welcome.

  78. And we need to think about that.

  79. I heard a speaker today.

  80. No, I heard it was at the prayer meeting this morning that I attended.

  81. And somebody was saying, it's Mothering Sunday this Sunday.

  82. And, you know, that's a really sad day for a lot of people.

  83. And that's true.

  84. And, you know, I often wonder whether we should call it Motherhood Sunday.

  85. So it's not quite as, you know, stigmatizing for people who are not mothers.

  86. But I don't know.

  87. So from the wealth of the believer to the walk of the believer.

  88. And then the very last shortish section, which I suspect in our churches, and I shall say this again to you in a couple of weeks, the warfare of the believer.

  89. That is, we're involved with the principalities and powers.

  90. Paul says that's where our real battle lies.

  91. And then he tells us to put on the full armor of God.

  92. And to pray at all times in the Spirit.

  93. So I have this kind of anxiety about the warfare bit.

  94. And that is, in most churches, they don't even take it seriously at all.

  95. And in some churches, they're totally obsessed by it and find the work of the devil under every stone they can overturn.

  96. And I want to say to you, I think we do need to take it seriously.

  97. But we don't need to be obsessed because Jesus Christ has already won the victory over the evil one on the cross of Calvary.

  98. So that's another way to look at it.

  99. And what's great about this text, I'm not going to read this to you tonight.

  100. But you might like, if you like homework, you might like to do this.

  101. But you might like to look at the story of Paul's arrest.

  102. Remember I told you that this letter was written very likely from Rome where Paul was in prison.

  103. He was later transferred to Jerusalem and held in house arrest in Jerusalem.

  104. But at this point, he was chained to a Roman army prison officer.

  105. And you can read about that in Acts chapter 21, verses 17 to the end.

    Acts 21:17

  106. And the interesting thing about Paul's imprisonment was that, first off, he should never have been in prison.

  107. He was a Roman citizen.

  108. And Roman citizens had a lot of rights.

  109. I mean, basically the way it worked out if you were a Roman citizen, was that if somebody did something to you,

  110. and the person was caught, the full might of the Roman Empire would be brought to bear on them.

  111. And, you know, as we know, you might well end up being crucified upside down on the Appian Way or some such place.

  112. So he was in prison wrongly because he was a Roman citizen.

  113. But even worse, he was falsely accused.

  114. What he was accused of was saying, because, we'll talk about this a bit more in a moment,

  115. but because Paul saw his primary ministry to preach the gospel to the Gentiles,

  116. he was accused of being dismissive by the scribes and the Pharisees,

  117. of being dismissive about the law in the Old Testament.

  118. Paul wasn't dismissive of it at all.

  119. Incidentally, nor was Jesus.

  120. You know, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says,

  121. I didn't come to change a jot or tittle of the law.

  122. I came to fulfill it.

  123. Two different things.

  124. I was telling somebody I had to go to Long Ashton on Sunday and give a talk on...

  125. There's some people, and I mean, there are quite a lot of people like this, surprisingly, in many ways,

  126. who think that we should never read the Old Testament in public worship, you know, all that butchery.

  127. Actually, less than 0.01% of the Old Testament is to do with butchery.

  128. In fact, there's a lot more stuff in the Old Testament calling sinful Israelites to repentance

  129. than there is about violence and death and all that kind of thing.

  130. So, Paul describes himself in verse 1 as a prisoner of Christ.

  131. Interestingly, there is a new version of the New Testament.

  132. Of course, there is.

  133. Called the English Standard Version.

  134. You may have seen a copy of it.

  135. As far as I know, it is the only modern translation of the New Testament

  136. where instead of saying that Paul...

  137. When Paul describes himself as the prisoner of Christ Jesus,

  138. the ESV says the prisoner for Christ Jesus,

  139. which I think carries a sense that the actual Greek word won't carry.

  140. I think he was a prisoner of.

  141. Christ Jesus.

  142. But that in itself is a very interesting statement.

  143. Because technically, Paul was a prisoner of the Roman Empire.

  144. To be accurate, he was a prisoner of Caesar Nero,

  145. who was not a nice man.

  146. And he was in a Roman prison

  147. and was something that would be held by the Romans in Jerusalem.

  148. And I think they asked the very interesting question of,

  149. really, whose prisoner was Paul?

  150. I think if you'd asked the man in the street

  151. whose prisoner Paul was,

  152. they would have said, well, Nero's, the Romans.

  153. But actually, Paul described himself differently.

  154. He says, I'm a prisoner of Christ Jesus

  155. for the sake of you Gentiles.

  156. I think that raises a very interesting question.

  157. And I think it's raised the same question

  158. for Christians throughout the ages.

  159. And that is, in the end,

  160. who is in charge of your life?

  161. In the world today,

  162. there are two dominant philosophies.

  163. One is fatalism.

  164. You know,

  165. you know,

  166. Garrison Keeler,

  167. in one of his stories about Lake Wobegon,

  168. says that the town motto was,

  169. we are what we are.

  170. And actually, just so you know this,

  171. do you know, I mean,

  172. if you're part of Prayer for Clevedon,

  173. keep your mouths delicately closed at this point.

  174. But do you know what the motto

  175. of Clevedon Council is?

  176. Shout it out.

  177. Watch and pray.

  178. Isn't that amazing?

  179. So as a group,

  180. which I get to as often as I can,

  181. that meets to pray for Clevedon,

  182. I'm sure they'd love to see some of you at that.

  183. It's a good time together to pray for our town

  184. and those setting authority over us.

  185. But making the decision

  186. as to who is really in charge of your life

  187. is a very critical issue.

  188. And it's been a critical issue

  189. for Christians throughout the ages

  190. and for people in this church this evening.

  191. And one of the times that we discover

  192. who is really in charge of our lives

  193. is when something goes wrong.

  194. As I said, there are two things there,

  195. philosophies that underlie the way

  196. a lot of people think today

  197. and indeed the way quite a lot of Christians think.

  198. One is what's called fatalism,

  199. that is stuff happens,

  200. get over it kind of thing.

  201. And the other is determinism,

  202. which is a far more subtle thing

  203. and in my view has found its way into churches

  204. in a way that's not been that helpful.

  205. Determinism is this idea

  206. that all human actions

  207. take place because of circumstances

  208. beyond ourselves.

  209. So you will have heard it often said,

  210. you know, when a prisoner is in court

  211. that some barrister stands up and says,

  212. well, my Lord, you know,

  213. poor old Harry here,

  214. you know, he came from a broken home.

  215. He flunked it in school

  216. and it's not his fault

  217. that he bashed this person over the head.

  218. And the trouble with the kind of determinist thing is,

  219. I mean, people blame biology,

  220. they blame their parents,

  221. they blame all kinds of things

  222. for their circumstances today.

  223. That would be determinist thinking.

  224. There's a man called Professor Robert Sapolsky

  225. who's written a scary book called Determined.

  226. And what that book argues is that

  227. anything we do is the result

  228. of our internal programming

  229. and external circumstances.

  230. So it's either your genes

  231. or it's your background.

  232. And of course, up to a point,

  233. we can't say that our backgrounds

  234. don't affect us.

  235. But on the other hand,

  236. we can't keep excusing

  237. our bad behavior

  238. on the basis of it's not really my fault,

  239. you know.

  240. My mother didn't make a great job

  241. of, you know,

  242. nappy training me,

  243. so, you know,

  244. that's the reason I'm a serial killer.

  245. I'm exaggerating to make a point.

  246. But look, here's the thing.

  247. The trouble with determinism,

  248. and I think this has found its way

  249. into our churches,

  250. is it is a machine

  251. to create perpetual victimhood.

  252. It's never my fault.

  253. If I can always throw the ball

  254. out to the wing,

  255. then I'm never responsible

  256. for my behavior.

  257. And in my view,

  258. it's one of the most childish

  259. facets of adulthood

  260. is not to understand

  261. that behavior has consequences.

  262. consequences.

  263. My view is,

  264. it's rule one

  265. of being a parent

  266. that you need to teach

  267. your children

  268. that behavior

  269. has consequences.

  270. I don't think

  271. that's saying anything

  272. particularly controversial,

  273. although if you were

  274. a couple of generations younger,

  275. you'd probably,

  276. you know,

  277. I'd be outed

  278. on mum's net

  279. or something.

  280. So Paul saw his,

  281. that Jesus was in charge

  282. of his life.

  283. He's in prison.

  284. He's not getting great food.

  285. He's chained to a bloke

  286. 24 hours a day.

  287. And he still recognizes

  288. that who's in charge

  289. of his life

  290. is Christ Jesus.

  291. And I think the problem

  292. for us is that

  293. especially when times

  294. are difficult,

  295. when things are not going,

  296. how we would like

  297. them to go.

  298. The big problem

  299. is this.

  300. We start to forget

  301. that Jesus

  302. is in charge

  303. of our lives.

  304. If you have

  305. an addictive illness,

  306. you know,

  307. you need to be very honest

  308. with yourself

  309. about who's in charge

  310. of your life.

  311. Is it your addiction

  312. or is it Christ Jesus?

  313. If you're going through

  314. a hard time,

  315. where will you turn?

  316. You know,

  317. I love Psalm 121.

  318. It's going to be read

  319. tomorrow at my friend

  320. of mine's funeral service,

  321. which I have to speak at,

  322. where the psalmist says,

  323. it's what they call

  324. a psalm of,

  325. it's a psalm that was said

  326. as the Israelites

  327. traveled to the big feasts

  328. in Jerusalem.

  329. And Psalm 121

  330. is a well-known psalm.

  331. And the first line of it,

  332. I think,

  333. asks a very deep

  334. existential question.

  335. And it's this.

  336. Sorry,

  337. I'm in 121,

  338. don't I?

  339. I lift up my eyes

  340. to you,

  341. to you whose throne

  342. is in heaven.

  343. Sorry,

  344. Psalm 121.

  345. I lift up my eyes

  346. to the hills,

  347. whence does my help

  348. come from?

  349. That is a very profound

  350. existential question.

  351. Where do you turn

  352. when your life

  353. is under pressure?

  354. And if Jesus

  355. is in charge

  356. of your life,

  357. you will do well

  358. to turn to him,

  359. will you not?

  360. But it's amazing,

  361. isn't it,

  362. how many of us

  363. in times have,

  364. it's the kind of last thing,

  365. I must say,

  366. I chastise myself sometimes.

  367. You know,

  368. I'm in a situation,

  369. somebody comes in

  370. and says something,

  371. and sometimes I think,

  372. why is the last thing

  373. I think about

  374. praying?

  375. You know,

  376. I generally

  377. want to think of myself

  378. as somebody

  379. who's prayerful

  380. and I like to come

  381. to prayer meetings here

  382. and I like to think

  383. of those that I know

  384. and lots of people

  385. I don't know.

  386. So Paul

  387. is telling us

  388. by telling us

  389. that he's a prisoner

  390. of Christ Jesus,

  391. though he's in prison,

  392. who is in charge

  393. of his life.

  394. I mean,

  395. are you aware of this,

  396. that Paul's ministry

  397. in prison

  398. was unbelievably

  399. productive

  400. he wrote

  401. the epistle

  402. to the Ephesians,

  403. he wrote the epistle

  404. to the Philippians,

  405. he wrote the epistle

  406. to the Colossians,

  407. and he wrote

  408. the letter

  409. to Philemon

  410. all at times

  411. when he was in prison.

  412. And,

  413. you know,

  414. I'm glad we've got

  415. those epistles

  416. to look at

  417. and to study together,

  418. all written

  419. from prison.

  420. Paul was very clear

  421. under whose authority

  422. he served.

  423. He was a prisoner

  424. of Christ.

  425. Let me just ask you,

  426. are we as clear

  427. as that?

  428. Not that we're in prison,

  429. but that we are

  430. servants

  431. of Christ.

  432. And that should be

  433. the determining factor

  434. in all that we do

  435. and all that we say.

  436. when I was

  437. a brand new Christian,

  438. I went to this

  439. very strict

  440. church,

  441. and

  442. there were all

  443. kinds of rules,

  444. and one of them

  445. was that

  446. if you were

  447. single

  448. and you were

  449. near a single woman,

  450. there's no way

  451. you should get

  452. more than nine inches

  453. closer to her.

  454. Right?

  455. I mean,

  456. I never,

  457. you know,

  458. I never argued

  459. with our cure

  460. and said,

  461. well,

  462. you know,

  463. it just gives you

  464. a little bit of,

  465. you know,

  466. leeway.

  467. But nine inches

  468. was the rule,

  469. but the better rule

  470. that he gave us was,

  471. he said,

  472. I hope you will

  473. never do anything

  474. when you're with

  475. your girlfriend

  476. that Jesus,

  477. if you imagine

  478. Jesus looking at you,

  479. would you be ashamed?

  480. Wow.

  481. So Paul was very clear

  482. under whose authority

  483. he served,

  484. and this Lent,

  485. you might like to just

  486. mull over in your mind,

  487. how clear are you

  488. about the authority

  489. of Christ Jesus

  490. in your life?

  491. And then

  492. we come

  493. in verse two

  494. to the big deal,

  495. the very big deal

  496. in this

  497. whole epistle

  498. as a matter of fact.

  499. And when Paul's

  500. talking about

  501. the dispensation

  502. of grace,

  503. he's not talking

  504. about saving faith.

  505. He's talking

  506. about the way

  507. that God revealed

  508. a mystery to him.

  509. And the mystery

  510. related to

  511. an issue

  512. that could have

  513. torn the early church

  514. apart.

  515. And that was,

  516. is the gospel

  517. only for Jews?

  518. Or is it for Jews

  519. and Gentiles?

  520. that was the issue

  521. why Paul

  522. was in prison?

  523. And,

  524. you know,

  525. Paul had a very

  526. challenging message

  527. in a

  528. divided world,

  529. and in Galatians

  530. chapter three

  531. and verses

  532. 26 to the end,

  533. he talks

  534. about,

  535. he says this,

  536. there is

  537. neither Jew

  538. nor Greek,

  539. slave nor free,

  540. male nor female,

  541. for you are

  542. all one

  543. in Christ

  544. Jesus.

  545. Two really

  546. significant points

  547. here to bring

  548. out.

  549. One is

  550. that Paul knew

  551. that real change

  552. comes from the

  553. preaching of the

  554. gospel.

  555. Paul had

  556. different ways

  557. of doing it.

  558. if you read

  559. Acts,

  560. you will read

  561. there that

  562. Paul's plan

  563. if he went

  564. into the synagogue,

  565. when he arrived

  566. in a new town,

  567. he went straight

  568. to the synagogue,

  569. and he tried

  570. to prove

  571. from the Old

  572. Testament

  573. that Jesus

  574. was the

  575. promised Messiah.

  576. And a few

  577. Jews believed,

  578. lots of them

  579. didn't,

  580. but a few

  581. did.

  582. When he,

  583. and we only

  584. have one

  585. example of this

  586. in the New

  587. Testament,

  588. and that's

  589. in Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  590. chapter 17

  591. when Paul

  592. is in Athens

  593. and he stands

  594. on this hill

  595. which is

  596. outside the

  597. Areopagus

  598. called

  599. the,

  600. what's it

  601. called?

  602. The Areopagus.

  603. Areopagus.

  604. And if you

  605. go there,

  606. by the way,

  607. it's been

  608. climbed on

  609. by so many

  610. preachers,

  611. it's really

  612. shiny and

  613. dangerous.

  614. It's really

  615. easy to get

  616. up there,

  617. but it's

  618. quite difficult

  619. to get down.

  620. And I

  621. think when

  622. we were

  623. there,

  624. somebody

  625. broke their

  626. wrist trying

  627. to get down

  628. off it.

  629. But the

  630. big deal

  631. in this

  632. gospel

  633. addresses

  634. that thing

  635. that could

  636. have caused

  637. a major

  638. dispute

  639. in the

  640. life of

  641. the early

  642. church.

  643. Is this

  644. deal,

  645. the gospel,

  646. only for

  647. Jewish people

  648. or is it

  649. for Gentiles

  650. as well?

  651. Paul's

  652. conviction

  653. from the

  654. earliest days

  655. of his

  656. conversion

  657. were,

  658. this is for

  659. Gentiles as

  660. well.

  661. That was

  662. dynamite

  663. in terms

  664. of the

  665. expectation

  666. of the

  667. Jews.

  668. And Paul,

  669. Peter,

  670. you remember

  671. in Acts

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  672. chapter 10,

  673. has this

  674. kind of weird

  675. dream where

  676. he sees all

  677. these animals

  678. and gets

  679. to the end

  680. of it and

  681. God says

  682. to him,

  683. look,

  684. none of

  685. these animals

  686. are going

  687. to make you

  688. unclean.

  689. And his

  690. understanding

  691. of his

  692. dream is

  693. that the

  694. gospel is

  695. for all

  696. creatures.

  697. I mean,

  698. that's true,

  699. I don't know

  700. if you think

  701. about this,

  702. but I mean,

  703. you know,

  704. the prophecies

  705. of Isaiah,

  706. you get this

  707. idea that the

  708. whole of

  709. creation will

  710. be redeemed.

  711. And do you

  712. remember he

  713. talks about

  714. the lion lying

  715. down with

  716. the lamb?

  717. And I

  718. mean,

  719. it's quite,

  720. you know,

  721. challenging to

  722. think of lions

  723. becoming

  724. vegetarians.

  725. Maybe vegans,

  726. I don't know.

  727. So this

  728. dispensation

  729. of grace,

  730. Paul,

  731. when he

  732. talks about

  733. a mystery,

  734. I told you

  735. this last

  736. week,

  737. a mystery

  738. here is

  739. not like

  740. we've got

  741. to get

  742. together the

  743. clues and

  744. find out

  745. who done

  746. it.

  747. But the

  748. mystery is

  749. an ancient

  750. fact that

  751. suddenly God

  752. reveals.

  753. And of

  754. course,

  755. in the

  756. Old Testament,

  757. you can

  758. find evidence.

  759. that God's

  760. concern was

  761. for all

  762. people,

  763. not just

  764. for his

  765. chosen

  766. people.

  767. And certainly

  768. in the

  769. New Testament,

  770. Paul led

  771. the charge

  772. on preaching

  773. the gospel

  774. to the

  775. Gentiles.

  776. And here's

  777. the thing,

  778. and sadly,

  779. I think we

  780. are losing

  781. this in the

  782. 21st century

  783. church.

  784. That Paul

  785. wrote in

  786. Romans chapter

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  787. 1,

  788. you remember

  789. this verse,

  790. verse 16.

  791. Paul says,

  792. I'm not

  793. ashamed of

  794. the gospel.

  795. Well,

  796. I have the

  797. horrible feeling

  798. that there are

  799. a lot of

  800. churches up and

  801. down this

  802. country which

  803. are very

  804. unsure as

  805. to whether

  806. the gospel

  807. is the right

  808. thing to

  809. preach.

  810. Romans chapter

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  811. 1 in verse

  812. 16,

  813. I'm not ashamed

  814. of the gospel.

  815. Why?

  816. Because it is

  817. the power of

  818. God for the

  819. salvation of

  820. everyone who

  821. believes.

  822. I mean,

  823. when you read

  824. that, you

  825. kind of ask

  826. yourself,

  827. well, why

  828. wouldn't we

  829. preach that?

  830. If it's the

  831. power,

  832. if it's the

  833. power of

  834. God for the

  835. salvation of

  836. everyone,

  837. it needs to

  838. be released

  839. into this

  840. world.

  841. Paul gives

  842. us a

  843. little

  844. framework as

  845. to his

  846. understanding

  847. of the

  848. gospel in

  849. chapter 15

  850. of 1

  851. Corinthians,

  852. in the

  853. first few

  854. verses there,

  855. I won't

  856. bother reading

  857. that to you

  858. tonight.

  859. The issue

  860. of Jews

  861. and Gentiles

  862. and who's

  863. the gospel

  864. for was the

  865. very reason

  866. that Paul

  867. was in

  868. prison.

  869. And his

  870. amazing

  871. conclusion was

  872. it's for

  873. all people.

  874. I want to

  875. go back to

  876. what I was

  877. saying at

  878. the beginning.

  879. If I

  880. said to

  881. you, you

  882. know, do

  883. you think

  884. the gospel

  885. is for

  886. all people?

  887. And then

  888. I said to

  889. you, and

  890. do you

  891. think your

  892. churches

  893. should be

  894. inclusive?

  895. I don't

  896. think there's

  897. anybody in

  898. the house

  899. who would

  900. say, certainly

  901. not.

  902. I think

  903. you'd all

  904. think that

  905. the churches

  906. should give

  907. a welcome

  908. to anybody

  909. and everybody.

  910. And I

  911. think you

  912. would say

  913. that the

  914. gospel is

  915. for all

  916. people, for

  917. all classes,

  918. races,

  919. et cetera,

  920. et cetera.

  921. And

  922. look,

  923. I think we

  924. got to

  925. really think

  926. 60 years

  927. ago, a

  928. movement

  929. started called

  930. the Gospel

  931. and Culture

  932. Movement.

  933. And what

  934. that movement

  935. was about in

  936. its early

  937. days was

  938. working out

  939. how do we

  940. preach the

  941. gospel in

  942. different cultures.

  943. It's a good

  944. question.

  945. tradition.

  946. I think

  947. anybody who's

  948. been a

  949. youth pastor

  950. would say

  951. that the

  952. way they

  953. preach the

  954. gospel to

  955. youngsters isn't

  956. quite the

  957. same as

  958. you would

  959. preach to

  960. older people.

  961. I mean,

  962. basically, the

  963. tenets are

  964. the same,

  965. but they

  966. might use

  967. different

  968. illustrations,

  969. different

  970. parables to

  971. kind of get

  972. their message

  973. across.

  974. But it's

  975. the

  976. Gospel and

  977. Culture

  978. Movement

  979. migrated

  980. somewhat

  981. and

  982. started to

  983. ask questions.

  984. Well, hang

  985. on.

  986. If all

  987. organizations

  988. have a

  989. culture,

  990. maybe our

  991. churches have

  992. a culture,

  993. and maybe we

  994. need to think

  995. some more

  996. about that

  997. culture,

  998. because we

  999. blithely stand

  1000. at the front

  1001. and say,

  1002. all are

  1003. welcome,

  1004. but do

  1005. they feel

  1006. welcome?

  1007. I remember

  1008. in my church,

  1009. which was in

  1010. the so-called

  1011. yacht and

  1012. yogurt belt

  1013. of South

  1014. Buckingham,

  1015. and I

  1016. remember the

  1017. first time

  1018. a chap came

  1019. to church

  1020. in the summer

  1021. with his

  1022. short-sleeved

  1023. shirt,

  1024. and he had

  1025. tattoos,

  1026. sleeves as they

  1027. call it,

  1028. on both arms.

  1029. I mean,

  1030. I'm going back

  1031. a long time

  1032. now.

  1033. And people

  1034. were horrified

  1035. that he

  1036. would come

  1037. forward for

  1038. communion and

  1039. put his

  1040. tattooed arms

  1041. out to

  1042. receive it.

  1043. And,

  1044. you know,

  1045. we're all

  1046. relatively

  1047. intuitive.

  1048. We can kind

  1049. of get,

  1050. you know,

  1051. am I welcome

  1052. here or am I

  1053. not?

  1054. I thought to

  1055. myself,

  1056. and, you

  1057. know,

  1058. I'm somebody

  1059. who is

  1060. conservative

  1061. on issues

  1062. of human

  1063. sexuality,

  1064. but I

  1065. think,

  1066. you know,

  1067. all people

  1068. are welcome

  1069. in our

  1070. churches,

  1071. and I

  1072. thought,

  1073. you know,

  1074. what must

  1075. it be like

  1076. to be a

  1077. gay person

  1078. and come

  1079. to church,

  1080. particularly

  1081. 30 years

  1082. ago.

  1083. I mean,

  1084. you know,

  1085. public attitudes

  1086. have changed

  1087. a lot.

  1088. I thought

  1089. to myself,

  1090. what must

  1091. it be like

  1092. if you've

  1093. been imprisoned?

  1094. And people

  1095. know it.

  1096. Are you,

  1097. can we

  1098. really make

  1099. people like

  1100. that feel

  1101. welcome?

  1102. Well,

  1103. the answer

  1104. is yes,

  1105. but it's

  1106. got to be

  1107. thought about.

  1108. And the

  1109. kind of

  1110. pat phrase,

  1111. all are

  1112. welcome,

  1113. I think

  1114. sometimes can

  1115. be very

  1116. unselfaware

  1117. when we

  1118. say it.

  1119. And Paul

  1120. goes on,

  1121. says this

  1122. amazing thing,

  1123. that in

  1124. chapter 6

  1125. he talks

  1126. about the

  1127. rulers and

  1128. authorities

  1129. and he

  1130. also mentions

  1131. them in

  1132. chapter 3.

  1133. And he

  1134. thinks it's

  1135. a very good

  1136. thing that

  1137. in preaching

  1138. the gospel

  1139. to the

  1140. Gentiles,

  1141. he's

  1142. preaching it

  1143. to the

  1144. rulers and

  1145. authorities

  1146. of this

  1147. present age.

  1148. That is,

  1149. those forces

  1150. that you

  1151. cannot see

  1152. but are

  1153. at work

  1154. in the

  1155. world

  1156. which are

  1157. malign.

  1158. Forces

  1159. that can

  1160. oppress

  1161. your life,

  1162. forces

  1163. that can

  1164. create

  1165. war and

  1166. rumours

  1167. of war

  1168. and all

  1169. that kind

  1170. of thing.

  1171. And Paul

  1172. thinks,

  1173. one of the

  1174. great things

  1175. about the

  1176. gospel

  1177. is that

  1178. it turns

  1179. back,

  1180. it limits

  1181. their

  1182. malign

  1183. power in

  1184. this world.

  1185. love.

  1186. And

  1187. here's my

  1188. final point

  1189. for tonight.

  1190. So in

  1191. towards the

  1192. end of

  1193. this chapter,

  1194. I love

  1195. this.

  1196. Paul says,

  1197. I pray

  1198. that out

  1199. of his,

  1200. that is

  1201. God's

  1202. glorious

  1203. riches,

  1204. he may

  1205. strengthen

  1206. you with

  1207. power through

  1208. his spirit

  1209. in your

  1210. inner being

  1211. so that

  1212. Christ may

  1213. dwell in

  1214. your hearts

  1215. through

  1216. faith.

  1217. I'm always

  1218. telling

  1219. Christians

  1220. because there

  1221. is this

  1222. kind of

  1223. slightly

  1224. superficial

  1225. idea around

  1226. that if

  1227. I become

  1228. a Christian

  1229. my problems

  1230. are over.

  1231. Nothing

  1232. bad will

  1233. ever happen

  1234. to me

  1235. because I've

  1236. got the

  1237. Lord on

  1238. my side.

  1239. And

  1240. actually

  1241. Jesus said,

  1242. didn't he,

  1243. the rain

  1244. will fall

  1245. on the

  1246. good and

  1247. bad alike.

  1248. And I

  1249. think this

  1250. verse gives

  1251. you a clue

  1252. to God's

  1253. divine

  1254. strategy to

  1255. do with

  1256. hardship

  1257. and that

  1258. is,

  1259. God won't

  1260. protect you

  1261. from everything

  1262. that goes

  1263. wrong in

  1264. your life.

  1265. But he

  1266. will give

  1267. you inner

  1268. strength.

  1269. He'll give

  1270. you the

  1271. inner strength

  1272. to hang

  1273. together.

  1274. I've

  1275. never

  1276. forgotten

  1277. this,

  1278. but I

  1279. remember

  1280. when we

  1281. had a

  1282. terrible

  1283. car accident

  1284. and poor

  1285. auntie was

  1286. very badly

  1287. injured and

  1288. my family,

  1289. apart from

  1290. my son,

  1291. gathered in

  1292. the John

  1293. Ratcliffe

  1294. Hospital in

  1295. Oxford.

  1296. I've never

  1297. forgotten

  1298. this.

  1299. So this

  1300. guy comes

  1301. out in

  1302. scrubs.

  1303. They've had

  1304. emptier in

  1305. there for

  1306. three or

  1307. four hours

  1308. and this

  1309. guy comes

  1310. out in

  1311. scrubs and

  1312. he said,

  1313. I think we

  1314. need to have

  1315. a word.

  1316. So have a

  1317. word.

  1318. And he

  1319. took us to

  1320. the side

  1321. room.

  1322. And fortunately,

  1323. I think I was

  1324. the only one of

  1325. the five of us

  1326. who saw this,

  1327. but on the

  1328. door there

  1329. was a sign

  1330. that said

  1331. bereavement

  1332. room.

  1333. I'm thinking,

  1334. oh my

  1335. goodness.

  1336. So he

  1337. went in

  1338. there and

  1339. anyway,

  1340. it turned

  1341. out auntie

  1342. hadn't died

  1343. and he

  1344. explained to

  1345. her that

  1346. her injuries

  1347. were pretty

  1348. extensive and

  1349. she was

  1350. under a,

  1351. they'd

  1352. induced a

  1353. coma and

  1354. his line

  1355. was the

  1356. next 24

  1357. hours will

  1358. be critical.

  1359. Well,

  1360. if you know

  1361. auntie,

  1362. she's here

  1363. tonight.

  1364. I mean,

  1365. she survived

  1366. that amazingly.

  1367. But my

  1368. four daughters

  1369. and I,

  1370. we went to

  1371. what they

  1372. call the

  1373. visitors'

  1374. room in

  1375. the intensive

  1376. care unit

  1377. and we

  1378. prayed to

  1379. quite late

  1380. into the

  1381. night,

  1382. or should I

  1383. say into

  1384. the early

  1385. morning.

  1386. And at the

  1387. end of it,

  1388. I think we

  1389. did have this

  1390. conviction.

  1391. I certainly

  1392. did have it

  1393. very strongly

  1394. and as we

  1395. got no

  1396. idea,

  1397. I mean,

  1398. we prayed

  1399. that God

  1400. would heal

  1401. healthier,

  1402. but our

  1403. deeper

  1404. awareness

  1405. was that

  1406. whatever

  1407. happened,

  1408. we would

  1409. be given

  1410. the strength

  1411. to carry

  1412. on.

  1413. I pray

  1414. that out

  1415. of his

  1416. glorious

  1417. riches,

  1418. he may

  1419. strengthen

  1420. you with

  1421. power

  1422. through his

  1423. spirit

  1424. in your

  1425. inner being.

  1426. I thank

  1427. God for

  1428. that promise

  1429. that Paul

  1430. writes there.

  1431. His inner

  1432. strength helps

  1433. us because

  1434. it reveals

  1435. the truth

  1436. about God

  1437. to us

  1438. and it

  1439. strengthens

  1440. us from

  1441. the inside

  1442. out.

  1443. Going back

  1444. to what I

  1445. was saying

  1446. is in

  1447. times of

  1448. trouble,

  1449. it's often

  1450. we grasp

  1451. at things

  1452. which are

  1453. external to

  1454. us to

  1455. help us.

  1456. No,

  1457. God's plan

  1458. is that he

  1459. wants to

  1460. strengthen us

  1461. from the

  1462. inside out,

  1463. that we

  1464. might face

  1465. the terrible

  1466. things that

  1467. can happen

  1468. to us

  1469. in our

  1470. lives

  1471. by this

  1472. strength.

  1473. And Paul

  1474. says,

  1475. verse 20,

  1476. it's a power

  1477. that's already

  1478. working within

  1479. us.

  1480. He also

  1481. says,

  1482. the power

  1483. in terms

  1484. of its

  1485. ability to

  1486. do more

  1487. than we

  1488. can ever

  1489. ask or

  1490. imagine,

  1491. is

  1492. unimaginable.

  1493. people.

  1494. And in

  1495. verse 21,

  1496. Paul tells

  1497. us,

  1498. it reveals

  1499. the glory

  1500. of God

  1501. in the

  1502. church.

  1503. I think

  1504. that when

  1505. it comes

  1506. to your

  1507. role as

  1508. witnesses in

  1509. the church,

  1510. if I might

  1511. say this

  1512. politely to

  1513. you,

  1514. I think

  1515. people are

  1516. much more

  1517. interested to

  1518. know in

  1519. how you

  1520. have coped

  1521. with hardship

  1522. in your

  1523. life than

  1524. whether or

  1525. not God

  1526. found a

  1527. parking space

  1528. for you in

  1529. the supermarket

  1530. car park.

  1531. I'm not

  1532. saying he

  1533. isn't

  1534. interested in

  1535. your parking.

  1536. He'd be

  1537. very interested

  1538. in mine.

  1539. I can never

  1540. park straight.

  1541. But see

  1542. what I mean?

  1543. I mean,

  1544. I think there

  1545. is power

  1546. in testimony

  1547. where God

  1548. has really,

  1549. really helped

  1550. us through a

  1551. difficult time

  1552. in our lives.

  1553. testimony.

  1554. I've found

  1555. testimonies to

  1556. be of varying

  1557. value that

  1558. I've heard

  1559. in church.

  1560. I've never

  1561. got this

  1562. confirmation

  1563. I was taking

  1564. and a

  1565. minister came

  1566. to me and

  1567. said,

  1568. we've got

  1569. three of

  1570. the young

  1571. people who

  1572. want to

  1573. give a

  1574. testimony.

  1575. And two

  1576. of them

  1577. were,

  1578. you know,

  1579. pretty good,

  1580. I thought.

  1581. And the

  1582. last one was

  1583. this boy

  1584. got up and

  1585. comes ambling

  1586. up to the

  1587. front and

  1588. says to him,

  1589. so,

  1590. Jeremy,

  1591. why are you

  1592. getting confirmed

  1593. tonight?

  1594. He said,

  1595. well,

  1596. my grandson

  1597. said she'd

  1598. buy me a

  1599. bike.

  1600. I didn't

  1601. talk to him

  1602. afterwards,

  1603. but I kind

  1604. of thought,

  1605. it's not

  1606. what we want,

  1607. is it,

  1608. that kind

  1609. of thing.

  1610. So,

  1611. here you

  1612. go.

  1613. three

  1614. questions for

  1615. you to

  1616. think about

  1617. this Lent.

  1618. Where do

  1619. I find

  1620. strength in

  1621. time of

  1622. need?

  1623. Second,

  1624. what does

  1625. it mean to

  1626. make Jesus

  1627. the authority

  1628. over my

  1629. life?

  1630. And three,

  1631. do we

  1632. take the

  1633. rulers and

  1634. authorities,

  1635. these hidden

  1636. forces at

  1637. work in

  1638. the heavenly

  1639. realms,

  1640. whose influence

  1641. is malign?

  1642. do we

  1643. take them

  1644. seriously

  1645. enough?

  1646. Thank you.
