  1. So, just to recap a little bit from last week, just for a minute, remind you of what I put into your minds last week.

  2. ! We came away asking three questions.

  3. One was, where do I find strength in time of need?

  4. And I suggested that you might look at Psalm 121 to give you some clues.

  5. The second thing is, a really, in a way, a really deep question.

  6. What does it mean to make Jesus the authority over my life?

  7. I think I said that, go to any congregation, really, and say, do you accept the authority of Christ in your life?

  8. You know, you ask the questions along that vein at confirmations and that kind of thing.

  9. And there are very few people who would say, no, not really.

  10. Most people say yes.

  11. And my question is, what does that mean when we say yes to questions like that?

  12. And the third thing was, do we take the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms seriously enough?

  13. Those malign influences that are beyond our vision, we can't see them.

  14. But we had the sense that they are doing their malign manipulation of the human race.

  15. And so that was something I said you could go away and think about this week.

  16. So what's happening at the beginning of chapter 4 is there is a massive transition in the epistle.

  17. And it's a transition from belief, the wealth of the believer, as it were, to behaviour.

  18. If this is what you believe, this is how you're meant to behave.

  19. And that seems a reasonable thesis.

  20. I think we would all say that we want to be driven by our values,

  21. by the things that we really claim to be the things we believe in.

  22. And Ephesians 4, 1 to 16 has a very clear structure to it.

  23. First of all, there is this kind of generic call to the church.

  24. Massive challenge, I think, for most of us, not least in the age in which we live.

  25. Paul says, as a prisoner for the Lord, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

  26. I mean, you think about that.

  27. If you think about the fact that despite whatever things there are that are wrong in your life,

  28. and there are bound to be some, if you think about those, God has still chosen you.

  29. Talked about that when we looked at Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  30. God has chosen you, and in your way you have chosen him.

  31. And Paul is basically saying now, if you get that,

  32. then this has huge ramifications for the way that you do life.

  33. Walk worthy of the calling which is yours.

  34. The second thing by way of structure, verses 2 to 5, Paul talks about the unity of the church.

  35. And Paul has this, it's a kind of repeated theme in Paul's teachings.

  36. That as Christians, we are called together to live in unity.

  37. And then ironically, verses 8 to 13, having stressed the unity of the church,

  38. Paul then expresses the diversity of the church.

  39. And what he means by that is that in every local church situation are Christians.

  40. And when we become Christians, God puts the Holy Spirit into our hearts

  41. and gives us spiritual gifts.

  42. We'll talk a little bit about that in a few moments of time.

  43. So, this generic calling to live a life worthy of the calling that God has given us.

  44. Second, the unity of the church.

  45. Thirdly, the diversity of the church.

  46. And then, verses 14 to 16, the maturity of the church.

  47. And it seems to me, although it's a very short section,

  48. to be a massive kind of issue for churches.

  49. That is, you know, when I was a young fellow,

  50. I spent a short time working in what was basically an industrial greenhouse.

  51. And we grew tomatoes and cucumbers in this warehouse.

  52. And it became very clear to me that the purpose of a greenhouse

  53. is to manipulate the climatic conditions

  54. so that things like tomatoes and cucumbers can grow.

  55. And I think, if I might use that analogy to say,

  56. I think one of Paul's big ideas about the church was that,

  57. not that we manipulate,

  58. but that we should create the kind of climate in our churches

  59. where people grow up into Christ.

  60. I've got a little more to say about that in just a few moments' time.

  61. And so, here's the structure.

  62. The generic calling to walk worthy of the calling which is ours in Christ.

  63. Secondly, the unity of the church.

  64. Thirdly, the diversity of the church.

  65. And fourthly, the maturity of the church.

  66. Verse 3, Paul tells us that the church,

  67. the unity of the church, is a gift from God.

  68. It's something that's given.

  69. He writes there,

  70. make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit

  71. through the bond of peace.

  72. Not make every effort to achieve it,

  73. but to maintain it, as it says in some of the older translations of the Bible.

  74. And in the lead-up to that verse,

  75. Paul talks about the kind of qualities

  76. that we Christians in our church communities should model.

  77. And again, they're very challenging, I think.

  78. Be completely humble and gentle.

  79. Be patient, bearing with one another in love.

  80. Those qualities make no sense outside of relationships.

  81. Be humble.

  82. I've done so much speaking recently,

  83. I can't remember where I said this,

  84. but one of the things that shocks me these days is,

  85. I have a Facebook account,

  86. and I mean, I don't look at it that often,

  87. and I think, you know,

  88. there are about 1,500 Facebook entries

  89. that I've never looked at on there.

  90. But I have noticed that increasing number of clergy

  91. think that Facebook is a place to kind of

  92. do a spiritual version of boasting and self-promotion.

  93. And I don't think that's becoming of ministers

  94. of the Church of Jesus Christ.

  95. I just think that humility is something,

  96. I guess, you know,

  97. many of us have to kind of put some effort in

  98. not to make ourselves the centre of attention.

  99. My mother, who I think,

  100. she had been a ballerina in her early life,

  101. and unlike a lot of people

  102. who don't like thousands of people

  103. looking at them in rather scantily clad tutus,

  104. not that that's ever been my experience,

  105. but I mean, I think it kind of,

  106. I mean, to do it,

  107. there must have been some easiness

  108. with wanting people to look at you

  109. and appreciate what you were doing.

  110. In her senior years,

  111. it did become,

  112. it did feel like that this woman

  113. wants to make herself the centre of attention

  114. all the time.

  115. She could hold the floor without invitation.

  116. And one of the things I will say about my mum

  117. was she was converted at the age of 53

  118. from nowhere, really,

  119. and the death of my grandmother

  120. kind of drew her into this rather dreary

  121. kind of middle-of-the-road church,

  122. but somehow the pastoral care of the minister there,

  123. and she became born again Christian

  124. and very enthusiastic,

  125. and I've never forgotten this,

  126. that when my sister and I went to

  127. sort out her home,

  128. we found several shoeboxes full of letters,

  129. and one of the things my mum took to in the,

  130. she got cancer,

  131. and it was a kind of slow burn cancer,

  132. and I can't remember how many years she had it for,

  133. I thought it was longer,

  134. Anthony thinks it was about seven years,

  135. I don't know why,

  136. I thought it was a bit longer than that,

  137. but during that time,

  138. she was an accredited speaker

  139. with Christian Viewpoint,

  140. and she would go to Christian Viewpoint meetings

  141. and talk about her testimony

  142. in relation to having cancer,

  143. and very clearly what she said

  144. was very powerful,

  145. and indeed life-changing

  146. from some of the women

  147. that went to listen to her,

  148. so I don't know whether that was God

  149. hallowing her need to be in the spotlight,

  150. but certainly God used my mum

  151. in those Christian Viewpoint meetings

  152. to talk about her experience

  153. of having the big C.

  154. So these qualities don't make any sense

  155. outside of relationships,

  156. and Paul tells us,

  157. not only is unity a gift from God,

  158. but he says that we have to,

  159. this is his words,

  160. in the old versions of the Bible,

  161. the word endeavour was used.

  162. It says here in verse 3,

  163. make every effort

  164. to keep the unity of the Spirit

  165. through the bond of peace.

  166. The unity of the church is given,

  167. but the problem is

  168. we have the ability to disrupt it.

  169. Those of us who like to gossip

  170. can disrupt the unity of the church.

  171. Those of us who withhold forgiveness

  172. can disrupt the unity of the church.

  173. And I remember David Watson saying

  174. in his heyday

  175. that he, in his experience,

  176. this is a guy who's in a different church

  177. four or five times a week,

  178. he said in his experience,

  179. the thing that most inhibited

  180. the ministry of the gospel in churches

  181. was disunity in the churches.

  182. I've experienced that myself.

  183. I've never forgotten

  184. turning up in a church in Windsor,

  185. church wardens were there to greet me,

  186. and wandered up to the thing.

  187. And they said,

  188. can we have a word?

  189. And I said,

  190. I think you're going to anyway.

  191. They said,

  192. can you get rid of our vicar?

  193. I said,

  194. depends what you mean.

  195. But,

  196. you know,

  197. if I'm going to get rid of him,

  198. I need very good reasons,

  199. not just a, you know,

  200. two minute conversation on them.

  201. So they then went into this character assassination

  202. from this dear man.

  203. I mean,

  204. he's a lovely guy.

  205. And he was getting into old age.

  206. He's pastorally very good

  207. and in lots of ways.

  208. But let's just say

  209. he wasn't the most dynamic minister ever

  210. to, you know,

  211. stalk the planet.

  212. And I had to sit them down

  213. and say to them,

  214. do you know what?

  215. I have very little confidence

  216. in the future of this church.

  217. They said,

  218. yeah,

  219. we don't either.

  220. He's useless.

  221. I said,

  222. and that's why

  223. I have no confidence.

  224. Because you should not be disrupting

  225. the unity of the church

  226. with this kind of talk.

  227. So I,

  228. then they fastened on to the thing

  229. that, you know,

  230. like in our world,

  231. I mean,

  232. whistleblowers always used to get sacked.

  233. Now they're kind of honoured people

  234. in our society.

  235. So they claimed

  236. they were whistleblowers

  237. and, you know,

  238. threatened to lawyer up

  239. and all that stuff.

  240. I mean,

  241. you know,

  242. this is the church of God

  243. for crying out loud.

  244. And Paul then

  245. models this unity

  246. that he's talked about

  247. on the Holy Trinity.

  248. Incidentally,

  249. if you ever chat

  250. to Jehovah's Witnesses

  251. and, you know,

  252. unless you are biblically confident,

  253. I would counsel against that.

  254. But they will tell you

  255. there's no such thing

  256. as the Holy Trinity.

  257. And you will never find that

  258. in the Bible

  259. as one of their favourite punchlines.

  260. Well,

  261. let me just read this to you.

  262. There is one body

  263. and one spirit

  264. just as you were called

  265. to one hope

  266. when you were called.

  267. One Lord,

  268. one faith,

  269. one baptism,

  270. one God

  271. and Father of all

  272. who is over all

  273. and through all

  274. and in all.

  275. I mean,

  276. that sounds suspiciously

  277. like the Holy Trinity to me.

  278. And it is.

  279. And what Paul's saying is

  280. the unity of the church,

  281. the diversity of the church

  282. is modelled

  283. by the Holy Trinity.

  284. Unity

  285. in diversity.

  286. And it's a very powerful picture

  287. which I suspect

  288. is probably,

  289. you know,

  290. its full impact

  291. is not immediately

  292. obvious to us.

  293. As I said,

  294. Paul spent

  295. a lot of time

  296. talking about

  297. unity.

  298. So,

  299. if you go to

  300. 1 Corinthians

  301. in your Bibles

  302. and read chapters

  303. 1 to 3,

  304. you will see

  305. that this church

  306. in Corinth

  307. which thought of itself

  308. as really

  309. in the fast track

  310. of kind of

  311. local churches,

  312. you know,

  313. somebody said,

  314. that he imagined

  315. they had

  316. rock till you drop

  317. bungee jumping worship

  318. and exercising

  319. the gift of tongues

  320. in worship

  321. and all that stuff.

  322. And

  323. yet Paul

  324. said,

  325. look,

  326. we have a problem here.

  327. And in

  328. chapter 2,

  329. he talks about

  330. this business

  331. of kind of

  332. charismatic leaders

  333. taking prominence.

  334. So,

  335. some people

  336. in the church

  337. would say,

  338. we follow

  339. Paul.

  340. Other people

  341. in the church

  342. would say,

  343. we follow

  344. Apollos.

  345. Incidentally,

  346. this is a bonus

  347. point for you.

  348. I read a very

  349. good book

  350. some years ago

  351. written by

  352. an author

  353. called

  354. Hugh Montefiore.

  355. and Hugh

  356. Montefiore

  357. wrote this book

  358. and what he was

  359. trying to do

  360. was,

  361. at that time

  362. and probably

  363. today to be fair,

  364. mostly now

  365. people accept,

  366. even though it

  367. says the opposite

  368. in the authorised

  369. version of the Bible,

  370. most people accept

  371. that Paul did not

  372. write Hebrews,

  373. the epistle

  374. to the Hebrews.

  375. and Hugh

  376. Hugh Montefiore

  377. had this very,

  378. I think,

  379. quite intelligent

  380. suggestion

  381. that the author

  382. of Hebrews

  383. was Apollos,

  384. who it said

  385. was eloquent,

  386. very eloquent

  387. Greek

  388. and very

  389. sophisticated

  390. arguments,

  391. you know.

  392. Just to say this,

  393. if you want to

  394. understand the

  395. epistle to the

  396. Hebrews,

  397. then what you

  398. need to

  399. understand is,

  400. this is an epistle

  401. written to

  402. Jewish Christians

  403. who had decided

  404. they wanted to

  405. follow Christ

  406. but were now

  407. tempted to go

  408. back into the

  409. synagogue.

  410. And the whole

  411. of the argument

  412. in Hebrews

  413. is trying to

  414. persuade them

  415. not to fall

  416. back and go

  417. to the synagogue

  418. to stick with

  419. Jesus Christ.

  420. And it's a

  421. wonderful epistle

  422. and full of

  423. very rich

  424. things.

  425. So Paul spent

  426. a lot of time

  427. talking about

  428. unity.

  429. And of course

  430. it needs to be

  431. said that

  432. Paul had no

  433. idea about

  434. ecumenism.

  435. He didn't

  436. have any idea

  437. that, you know,

  438. the church would

  439. unfold and there

  440. would be a big

  441. break between

  442. Roman Catholics

  443. and Protestants.

  444. He didn't know

  445. that Protestants

  446. would fall out

  447. with each other

  448. and Baptists

  449. are going one

  450. direction,

  451. Methodists are

  452. going another

  453. direction.

  454. and the

  455. URC,

  456. I'm not quite

  457. sure which

  458. direction.

  459. He didn't

  460. know anything

  461. about that.

  462. Though there

  463. is some

  464. evidence in

  465. Paul's

  466. letters and

  467. in the Acts

  468. of the Apostles

  469. that he did

  470. encourage

  471. congregations to

  472. take responsibility

  473. for each other.

  474. If they had a

  475. financial need,

  476. Paul would say,

  477. well let's try

  478. and help them

  479. out there.

  480. But what he's

  481. really talking

  482. about is the

  483. local church

  484. of which you

  485. are members.

  486. So it

  487. addresses people

  488. like us who

  489. are members of

  490. local churches.

  491. And, okay,

  492. you know, if you

  493. are ecumenically

  494. minded, I mean,

  495. there was no

  496. kind of churches

  497. together in

  498. Ephesus.

  499. There was the

  500. church in

  501. Ephesus.

  502. And today,

  503. because of our

  504. denominationalism,

  505. we have to

  506. try and form

  507. some structures

  508. that try and

  509. get us together

  510. to talk to

  511. one another.

  512. I think, I

  513. mean, I may

  514. be wrong

  515. about this.

  516. I have very

  517. little enthusiasm

  518. for heavy

  519. ecumenical

  520. machinery.

  521. But I think

  522. it's really

  523. important that

  524. churches work

  525. together.

  526. And, you

  527. know, that's

  528. why I was

  529. delighted when

  530. Tim, who was

  531. the then

  532. chairman of

  533. Churches

  534. Together,

  535. gave me

  536. permission to

  537. get the

  538. imprimatur of

  539. churches together

  540. in Clevedon

  541. to run this

  542. event.

  543. And Peter

  544. Kemba, his

  545. successor, has

  546. been equally

  547. gracious in

  548. relation to

  549. that.

  550. Because I

  551. believe that

  552. when we get

  553. to know each

  554. other, when we

  555. get together,

  556. that can only

  557. be good.

  558. If we could

  559. even plan

  560. together, it

  561. would even be

  562. better.

  563. So we

  564. wouldn't do

  565. duplication.

  566. And, yeah, I

  567. was saying

  568. that, talking

  569. beforehand with

  570. somebody and

  571. saying that, you

  572. know, a couple

  573. of churches that

  574. I'm familiar

  575. with, one of

  576. which was

  577. Philip

  578. Gennady's

  579. church, who's

  580. coming to

  581. talk to you

  582. next week,

  583. and Ed

  584. Shaw's church.

  585. I mean, there

  586. was a time when

  587. everybody wanted

  588. to set up a

  589. church in the

  590. centre of

  591. Bristol.

  592. You know, the

  593. sad thing was

  594. nobody talked

  595. to each other

  596. at all.

  597. We only heard

  598. about this when

  599. yet another

  600. church showed

  601. up and set

  602. up.

  603. We had people

  604. coming from

  605. Swansea, you

  606. know, called

  607. by God to

  608. Bristol.

  609. I'm not saying

  610. they're not.

  611. I'm saying it

  612. wouldn't have

  613. been better if

  614. we could have

  615. planned all

  616. this together.

  617. I think we're

  618. a long way from

  619. that, sadly, and

  620. I would love to

  621. see an improvement

  622. in our town here

  623. in Clevedon.

  624. Paul spent a

  625. long time talking

  626. about unity, and

  627. just a final point

  628. on the unity of

  629. the church.

  630. Do you remember

  631. that Psalm 133

    Psalms 133:1

  632. verse 1, where

  633. the psalmist says

  634. hundreds of years

  635. before Paul put

  636. pen to paper in

  637. prison in Rome,

  638. how good and how

  639. pleasant it is when

  640. brothers and

  641. sisters dwell

  642. together in

  643. unity?

  644. I mean, I don't

  645. quite get the

  646. analogy there.

  647. It says it's like

  648. the oil on

  649. Aaron's beard.

  650. I don't want to

  651. think about that,

  652. but the point is

  653. there is this

  654. call in the

  655. New Testament

  656. for local

  657. congregations to

  658. work hard at

  659. maintaining the

  660. unity which is

  661. our gift.

  662. Why is it a

  663. gift that's

  664. given?

  665. Well, Paul's

  666. argument would

  667. be once we

  668. become Christians,

  669. once we become

  670. baptized Christians,

  671. born-again

  672. Christians,

  673. whatever phrase

  674. you want to put

  675. next to that,

  676. we are all in

  677. Christ.

  678. That means that

  679. what joins us

  680. is far greater

  681. than that which

  682. divides us.

  683. So how can we

  684. endeavor to

  685. maintain unity?

  686. I think that's

  687. a very

  688. important question.

  689. I mean, these

  690. are just my

  691. potentially

  692. pathetic ideas.

  693. The first

  694. thing I would

  695. say is

  696. church unity

  697. is made a

  698. lot easier

  699. when we have

  700. an agreement

  701. on what the

  702. ultimate source

  703. of authority

  704. within the

  705. church is.

  706. I have no

  707. doubt in my

  708. mind that the

  709. primary source

  710. of authority

  711. in the

  712. church is

  713. this book.

  714. I'm not

  715. going to quote

  716. you from the

  717. 39 articles,

  718. but in

  719. theory the

  720. Church of

  721. England is

  722. committed not

  723. to believe or

  724. indulge in any

  725. practice which

  726. is, and I

  727. quote the

  728. 39 articles of

  729. religion,

  730. repugnant to

  731. God's word.

  732. And yet, I

  733. see Church of

  734. England churches

  735. certainly, I

  736. think, indulging

  737. in very

  738. repugnant

  739. conversations

  740. about how, you

  741. know, we

  742. will exist into

  743. the future.

  744. But I think

  745. unity, one of

  746. the primary

  747. bases of

  748. unity is we

  749. have to have

  750. some agreement

  751. on the

  752. ultimate source

  753. of authority

  754. in the

  755. church.

  756. I mean, I

  757. don't know,

  758. I've never

  759. done a poll

  760. on this.

  761. I don't know

  762. how many

  763. Roman Catholics

  764. would say,

  765. if you ask

  766. them that

  767. question, well

  768. it's obvious,

  769. it's the

  770. Pope.

  771. I don't know

  772. if they would

  773. say that in

  774. the 21st

  775. century, but

  776. I mean, in

  777. days past,

  778. loyalty to the

  779. Pope was

  780. everything.

  781. Secondly, there

  782. has to be a

  783. commitment to

  784. knowing one

  785. another.

  786. I've never

  787. forgotten when I

  788. was first in

  789. a local church

  790. ministry, and

  791. people who'd

  792. been in the

  793. church for

  794. years would

  795. comment on

  796. somebody else

  797. who'd been in

  798. the church for

  799. years.

  800. And they'd

  801. say, do you

  802. know who

  803. Mary is?

  804. And I'd say,

  805. which one?

  806. They'd say, that

  807. one who wears

  808. that ridiculous

  809. hat on Sundays.

  810. I said, do you

  811. know her name?

  812. No.

  813. How long have you

  814. been coming here?

  815. Well, since I was

  816. eight years old.

  817. How old are you?

  818. 75.

  819. I said, you

  820. don't know her

  821. name.

  822. And I thought

  823. to myself, there's

  824. work to be done

  825. here.

  826. So knowing

  827. one another is

  828. good for us.

  829. It helps us.

  830. Well, I think

  831. this, you know,

  832. this psychologist

  833. wrote a book and

  834. said, the trouble

  835. is when you get a

  836. bit older, you

  837. don't like anybody.

  838. And what he

  839. meant was, if you

  840. think about people

  841. generically, you

  842. know, you go to

  843. the airport and

  844. you see the

  845. pathetic way

  846. people have to

  847. queue, even

  848. though they've

  849. got a seat on

  850. the plane and

  851. all that stuff.

  852. Or, you know, you

  853. see a big pile of

  854. fly tipping and

  855. you think, oh,

  856. you know, this is

  857. the human race and

  858. I'm part of it.

  859. And I'm sure that

  860. those of you who've

  861. worked in kind of

  862. services like

  863. paramedics and the

  864. police have, you

  865. know, seen terrible

  866. behaviour from human

  867. beings.

  868. And what the

  869. psychiatrist is

  870. saying is, we

  871. generally, you

  872. don't like other

  873. people.

  874. In fact, I think he

  875. uses the phrase

  876. that generally we

  877. hate people.

  878. But within that,

  879. there are people

  880. who are very

  881. important to us.

  882. And I don't

  883. think the

  884. psychiatrist is

  885. quite right.

  886. But what I do

  887. know is that a

  888. commitment, not

  889. just to Gordon

  890. Jones and his

  891. excellent book

  892. written years ago,

  893. you can't get

  894. hold of it now,

  895. but he said,

  896. too many churches

  897. behave like a

  898. kind of snooker

  899. table where the

  900. balls on the

  901. table just kiss

  902. off each other.

  903. There's no

  904. commitment to

  905. really get to

  906. know one

  907. another.

  908. I used to think

  909. that one of the

  910. wonderful things

  911. that happened in

  912. the church where I

  913. was is we used

  914. to have weekends

  915. away together.

  916. And they were

  917. just very special

  918. times.

  919. I mean, I can't

  920. tell you how

  921. special they were

  922. in terms of

  923. people getting

  924. to know one

  925. another.

  926. And I

  927. remember once

  928. we were at

  929. this place

  930. called Pilgrim

  931. Hall in

  932. Sussex.

  933. And in the

  934. middle of the

  935. night the

  936. fire alarm

  937. went.

  938. I tell you,

  939. you really get

  940. to know

  941. parishioners when

  942. you see what

  943. they wear in

  944. bed.

  945. We had this

  946. city slicker

  947. with us,

  948. Mike.

  949. I don't know

  950. how he managed

  951. this, but he

  952. managed to get

  953. out of bed and

  954. get down within

  955. about 90

  956. seconds and

  957. he's got a

  958. three-piece suit

  959. on, shirt

  960. and tie.

  961. So, agreement

  962. and the ultimate

  963. source of

  964. authority, a

  965. commitment to

  966. knowing one.

  967. And thirdly,

  968. I think, and

  969. again, not

  970. many churches

  971. have a very

  972. formal process

  973. for this.

  974. And if they

  975. do, I would

  976. say nine times

  977. out of ten, it's

  978. not a very

  979. biblical process.

  980. But what

  981. churches need

  982. to do is

  983. provide a

  984. just forum

  985. for interpersonal

  986. disputes to

  987. get sorted

  988. out and

  989. sorted out

  990. soon.

  991. And, see, I

  992. think the

  993. Bible has a

  994. way to deal

  995. with this and

  996. what the

  997. Bible would

  998. encourage us

  999. to do, you

  1000. can read

  1001. about this in

  1002. the Sermon on

  1003. the Mount,

  1004. is firstly, if

  1005. we have a

  1006. dispute, we

  1007. try and sort

  1008. it out

  1009. together.

  1010. If we

  1011. can't sort

  1012. it out, we

  1013. go to one

  1014. of the elders

  1015. of the church,

  1016. whatever that

  1017. means within

  1018. your denomination,

  1019. and ask them

  1020. to help you

  1021. sort it out.

  1022. And the

  1023. third thing

  1024. is, and

  1025. this remains

  1026. both an

  1027. incentive and

  1028. a threat, is

  1029. that if the

  1030. elders and

  1031. you can't

  1032. sort it out,

  1033. it becomes a

  1034. congregational

  1035. matter.

  1036. And, I

  1037. mean, in

  1038. my view, that

  1039. would need

  1040. to be a

  1041. kind of

  1042. organised

  1043. process for

  1044. sorting disputes

  1045. out.

  1046. What happens

  1047. in most

  1048. churches is

  1049. interpersonal

  1050. disputes never

  1051. get sorted

  1052. out.

  1053. It's a terrible

  1054. thing, isn't it?

  1055. There are people,

  1056. I can tell you

  1057. this, you know,

  1058. I've been around

  1059. more churches

  1060. than most of

  1061. you had hot

  1062. dinners.

  1063. There are people

  1064. in churches who've

  1065. hated each other

  1066. for years.

  1067. Hated.

  1068. wouldn't talk to

  1069. them, wouldn't go

  1070. around their

  1071. house, would

  1072. never do

  1073. anything like

  1074. that.

  1075. And of course,

  1076. this starts from

  1077. a very obvious

  1078. and pertinent

  1079. observation.

  1080. You've noticed

  1081. that we're all

  1082. different.

  1083. You may have

  1084. noticed that

  1085. there are people

  1086. and just on,

  1087. in terms of

  1088. visual presence,

  1089. you've decided

  1090. you don't like

  1091. them.

  1092. that's a kind

  1093. of given of

  1094. our fallen

  1095. humanity, I

  1096. think.

  1097. But to

  1098. recognise

  1099. difference,

  1100. which is what

  1101. I'm coming

  1102. on to now,

  1103. I think is

  1104. really helpful

  1105. and important.

  1106. And to give

  1107. thanks for

  1108. difference.

  1109. I'm not here

  1110. talking about

  1111. a secular

  1112. model of

  1113. inclusion.

  1114. I'm talking

  1115. about a

  1116. biblical

  1117. understanding

  1118. of how we

  1119. might improve

  1120. the unity

  1121. factor in our

  1122. churches.

  1123. So Paul

  1124. talks about

  1125. the unity

  1126. of the church

  1127. and then he

  1128. goes on,

  1129. and this kind

  1130. of does your

  1131. head in a bit,

  1132. he goes on

  1133. about the

  1134. diversity of

  1135. the church.

  1136. What Paul is

  1137. talking about

  1138. here in

  1139. verse 7

  1140. is the

  1141. diversity

  1142. in our

  1143. giftedness.

  1144. He's talking

  1145. about spiritual

  1146. gifts,

  1147. what the

  1148. Bible,

  1149. the Greek

  1150. refers to

  1151. as charismata,

  1152. where our

  1153. word charismatic

  1154. comes from,

  1155. although these

  1156. days the word

  1157. charismatic has

  1158. been applied to

  1159. a certain kind

  1160. of leadership.

  1161. And Paul

  1162. in Ephesians

  1163. 4 doesn't

  1164. particularly talk

  1165. about gifts

  1166. in the same

  1167. way that he

  1168. talks about

  1169. them in

  1170. Romans 12

  1171. and 1

  1172. Corinthians

  1173. 12.

  1174. But what

  1175. he does

  1176. do is

  1177. he talks

  1178. about what

  1179. I would

  1180. call orders

  1181. of ministry

  1182. which are

  1183. given as

  1184. gifts to

  1185. the church.

  1186. And it

  1187. says it

  1188. was he,

  1189. that is

  1190. Jesus,

  1191. who gave

  1192. some to

  1193. be apostles,

  1194. some to

  1195. be prophets,

  1196. some to

  1197. be evangelists,

  1198. and some

  1199. to be pastors

  1200. and teachers

  1201. to prepare

  1202. God's people

  1203. for works

  1204. of service

  1205. so that the

  1206. body of

  1207. Christ may

  1208. be built

  1209. up until

  1210. we all

  1211. know,

  1212. all know,

  1213. sorry,

  1214. all reach

  1215. unity in

  1216. the faith

  1217. and in

  1218. the knowledge

  1219. of the

  1220. Son of

  1221. God.

  1222. If you

  1223. wanted some

  1224. homework,

  1225. I mean,

  1226. just take a

  1227. glance of

  1228. what Paul

  1229. outlines in

  1230. Romans 12

  1231. and 1

  1232. Corinthians 12

  1233. in terms of

  1234. gifts.

  1235. And I

  1236. mean,

  1237. some of

  1238. you,

  1239. you know,

  1240. I know

  1241. that your

  1242. kind of

  1243. weird meter

  1244. starts to

  1245. flicker

  1246. at even

  1247. the thought

  1248. of spiritual

  1249. gifts because

  1250. you think

  1251. of people

  1252. speaking in

  1253. tongues or

  1254. people

  1255. prophesying

  1256. stuff.

  1257. And these

  1258. are not

  1259. unimportant

  1260. gifts.

  1261. In fact,

  1262. Paul encourages

  1263. us to seek

  1264. the higher

  1265. gifts.

  1266. But,

  1267. here's the

  1268. thing.

  1269. Some of

  1270. those gifts

  1271. are what

  1272. you might

  1273. call

  1274. ordinary

  1275. gifts.

  1276. So,

  1277. in Romans

  1278. is the

  1279. gift of

  1280. administration.

  1281. I can

  1282. tell you

  1283. from my

  1284. experience

  1285. that a

  1286. church that

  1287. gets its

  1288. administration

  1289. right is

  1290. rare,

  1291. but it's

  1292. brilliant.

  1293. And people

  1294. who have

  1295. gifts of

  1296. administration

  1297. should be

  1298. valued just

  1299. as much as

  1300. people who

  1301. have got

  1302. gifts of

  1303. prophecy or

  1304. discernment or

  1305. these things.

  1306. And do

  1307. you good to

  1308. read through

  1309. those gifts?

  1310. Incidentally,

  1311. I don't think

  1312. they're meant

  1313. to be an

  1314. exhaustive list

  1315. in either

  1316. case.

  1317. Because one

  1318. of the most

  1319. important areas

  1320. of gifting

  1321. that I

  1322. discovered

  1323. was important

  1324. in the

  1325. growth of

  1326. our church

  1327. were people

  1328. who had

  1329. this natural

  1330. gift of

  1331. hosting.

  1332. People whose

  1333. homes you

  1334. could go

  1335. into and

  1336. you would

  1337. feel welcome

  1338. and these

  1339. incredible

  1340. people who

  1341. can rustle

  1342. up a meal

  1343. from nothing

  1344. in about

  1345. 20 minutes

  1346. and put it

  1347. on the

  1348. table.

  1349. It's

  1350. wonderful.

  1351. People who

  1352. have that

  1353. gift are a

  1354. real blessing

  1355. to a church,

  1356. particularly a

  1357. church which

  1358. wants to get

  1359. house groups

  1360. right.

  1361. so there

  1362. is a

  1363. diversity

  1364. in our

  1365. giftedness

  1366. and Paul

  1367. I think

  1368. has this

  1369. big idea

  1370. that churches

  1371. work best

  1372. when all

  1373. the ministries

  1374. that the

  1375. church feels

  1376. called to

  1377. do are

  1378. done by

  1379. people who

  1380. are gifted

  1381. to do

  1382. those ministries.

  1383. I mean,

  1384. imagine that.

  1385. I won't

  1386. tell you the

  1387. full story

  1388. about this

  1389. guy,

  1390. but we

  1391. had a

  1392. guy called

  1393. Cyril in

  1394. my church

  1395. who,

  1396. when I

  1397. first went

  1398. there,

  1399. we used

  1400. to do

  1401. prayer book

  1402. even song

  1403. and it

  1404. was pretty

  1405. well attended,

  1406. about 75

  1407. people in the

  1408. congregation

  1409. on a Sunday

  1410. evening,

  1411. which compared

  1412. to the rest

  1413. of the

  1414. deany was

  1415. pretty good.

  1416. And up

  1417. the front

  1418. there was

  1419. me in

  1420. my

  1421. cassock

  1422. and surplus

  1423. and hood

  1424. and what

  1425. have you.

  1426. And the

  1427. only person

  1428. in the

  1429. choir was

  1430. this guy

  1431. called

  1432. Cyril.

  1433. And he

  1434. used to

  1435. stand right

  1436. next to

  1437. me and

  1438. sing loudly

  1439. and on

  1440. the basis

  1441. that he,

  1442. the first

  1443. thing he

  1444. would tell

  1445. you when

  1446. you entered

  1447. the church

  1448. was,

  1449. I've been

  1450. in the

  1451. choir for

  1452. 55 years.

  1453. You're like,

  1454. on the

  1455. same principle

  1456. that if you

  1457. gave a

  1458. monkey a

  1459. typewriter,

  1460. eventually it

  1461. would type

  1462. a word,

  1463. you would

  1464. think that

  1465. with all

  1466. the hymns

  1467. he'd sung

  1468. and all

  1469. the tunes

  1470. he'd sung,

  1471. he might

  1472. occasionally

  1473. hit a

  1474. right note,

  1475. but no.

  1476. Perish the

  1477. thought.

  1478. And it's

  1479. a great

  1480. story,

  1481. I won't

  1482. bore you

  1483. with it,

  1484. but I

  1485. actually found

  1486. out that

  1487. what he

  1488. loved was

  1489. a kind

  1490. of odd

  1491. job man

  1492. by mentality

  1493. and I

  1494. said to

  1495. him,

  1496. you can

  1497. be the

  1498. odd job

  1499. man around

  1500. the church,

  1501. you know,

  1502. as long as

  1503. you promise

  1504. to leave

  1505. the choir.

  1506. And he

  1507. did.

  1508. And he

  1509. just became

  1510. a different

  1511. guy.

  1512. I mean,

  1513. he had

  1514. some stuff

  1515. in his

  1516. life which

  1517. was really

  1518. hard to

  1519. live with.

  1520. But that's

  1521. Paul's idea.

  1522. You know,

  1523. Paul talks

  1524. about the

  1525. church as

  1526. the body

  1527. and what

  1528. he sees

  1529. in the

  1530. body,

  1531. I know

  1532. this gets

  1533. a bit

  1534. harder when

  1535. you get

  1536. older,

  1537. but what

  1538. he saw

  1539. is a

  1540. kind of

  1541. unity

  1542. in the

  1543. body.

  1544. So Paul's

  1545. line is,

  1546. you know,

  1547. the foot

  1548. can't say

  1549. to the

  1550. mouth,

  1551. I'd

  1552. prefer to

  1553. be a

  1554. mouth.

  1555. And I

  1556. just want

  1557. to give a

  1558. little time,

  1559. sorry about

  1560. this,

  1561. there's I

  1562. think two

  1563. problem

  1564. verses in

  1565. this little

  1566. passage from

  1567. Paul.

  1568. All this

  1569. stuff about

  1570. ascending and

  1571. descending.

  1572. What does

  1573. he ascended

  1574. mean except

  1575. that he

  1576. also

  1577. descended

  1578. to the

  1579. lower

  1580. earthly

  1581. regions?

  1582. He who

  1583. descended

  1584. is the

  1585. very one

  1586. who

  1587. ascended

  1588. higher

  1589. than all

  1590. the heavens

  1591. in order

  1592. to fill

  1593. the whole

  1594. universe.

  1595. Well,

  1596. there's

  1597. general

  1598. agreement

  1599. that when

  1600. Paul's

  1601. talking about

  1602. ascended

  1603. there,

  1604. incidentally,

  1605. this quote

  1606. comes from

  1607. Psalm 68

  1608. and verse

  1609. 18.

  1610. And I'll

  1611. just read

  1612. that to

  1613. you.

  1614. This is

  1615. Paul quoting

  1616. from the

  1617. Old Testament

  1618. scriptures.

  1619. Here we

  1620. go.

  1621. Psalm 68

  1622. in verse

  1623. 18.

  1624. This is

  1625. Paul writing

  1626. it,

  1627. sorry,

  1628. this is

  1629. David

  1630. writing in

  1631. Psalm 68.

  1632. When you

  1633. ascended on

  1634. high,

  1635. you led

  1636. captives in

  1637. your train

  1638. and you

  1639. received gifts

  1640. from men,

  1641. even from

  1642. the rebellious,

  1643. that you,

  1644. O Lord God,

  1645. might dwell

  1646. there.

  1647. So,

  1648. Paul slightly

  1649. bends the

  1650. meaning of

  1651. this because

  1652. it says

  1653. here that

  1654. you receive

  1655. gifts from

  1656. men.

  1657. Well,

  1658. actually,

  1659. the thrust

  1660. of Paul's

  1661. comment is

  1662. that God

  1663. gives us

  1664. the gifts,

  1665. not the

  1666. other way

  1667. around.

  1668. But,

  1669. so there's

  1670. general

  1671. agreement that

  1672. the word

  1673. ascended

  1674. refers to

  1675. the ascension

  1676. of Jesus

  1677. here.

  1678. Incidentally,

  1679. Jews who

  1680. listened to

  1681. that psalm

  1682. would have

  1683. related it

  1684. to the

  1685. story of

  1686. Moses.

  1687. led his

  1688. people out

  1689. of captivity

  1690. and into

  1691. the promised

  1692. land.

  1693. He led

  1694. captives

  1695. to be

  1696. set free

  1697. and then

  1698. become

  1699. captives

  1700. of Jesus

  1701. Christ

  1702. or captives

  1703. of God

  1704. in Moses'

  1705. case.

  1706. There is,

  1707. you may have

  1708. heard this,

  1709. but there's

  1710. a reference,

  1711. people refer

  1712. here to

  1713. the idea

  1714. that when

  1715. Jesus died

  1716. he went

  1717. down to

  1718. hell on

  1719. Easter

  1720. Saturday

  1721. and preached

  1722. in hell

  1723. for 24

  1724. hours and

  1725. then was

  1726. raised from

  1727. the dead

  1728. and the rest

  1729. is, you

  1730. know, you

  1731. know the

  1732. ending to

  1733. the story.

  1734. The only

  1735. New Testament

  1736. reference I

  1737. can find to

  1738. any idea

  1739. that Jesus

  1740. preached to

  1741. the dead

  1742. is in

  1743. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  1744. chapter 3

  1745. and verse

  1746. 19.

  1747. Some people

  1748. say that the

  1749. ascending and

  1750. descending thing

  1751. refers to the

  1752. Holy Spirit.

  1753. Jesus ascends

  1754. into heaven

  1755. and the third

  1756. person of the

  1757. Holy Trinity,

  1758. the Holy Spirit,

  1759. descends to

  1760. earth and

  1761. brings gifts

  1762. in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1763. chapter 2.

  1764. In my own

  1765. mind that's

  1766. probably what

  1767. Paul was

  1768. talking about.

  1769. And then the

  1770. final thing

  1771. that people

  1772. say about

  1773. this gets

  1774. worse is

  1775. Paul here

  1776. having a

  1777. tilt at

  1778. this heresy

  1779. called

  1780. Gnosticism

  1781. that believed

  1782. that because

  1783. God was

  1784. absolutely

  1785. perfect and

  1786. because human

  1787. beings are

  1788. absolutely

  1789. terrible,

  1790. there was

  1791. no way that

  1792. God could

  1793. come down

  1794. as a man.

  1795. The idea,

  1796. the very

  1797. idea revolted

  1798. them.

  1799. And so

  1800. some people

  1801. feel that

  1802. Paul here

  1803. is just

  1804. having a

  1805. kind of

  1806. jab in

  1807. the direction

  1808. of Gnostics.

  1809. Purpose of

  1810. spiritual gifts

  1811. to glorify

  1812. God,

  1813. to edify

  1814. the church

  1815. by building

  1816. up the

  1817. body of

  1818. Christ,

  1819. verse 12b,

  1820. and thirdly

  1821. to save

  1822. the world.

  1823. To save

  1824. the world

  1825. by service

  1826. and by the

  1827. preaching

  1828. of the

  1829. gospel,

  1830. not

  1831. either or,

  1832. but both

  1833. and.

  1834. There are

  1835. some

  1836. problems

  1837. I think

  1838. that go

  1839. with

  1840. the gifts

  1841. that Paul

  1842. talks about.

  1843. One is

  1844. we can get

  1845. obsessed with

  1846. particular gifts.

  1847. I've met

  1848. several

  1849. people in

  1850. my life

  1851. who

  1852. have been

  1853. obsessed

  1854. by getting

  1855. a particular

  1856. gift.

  1857. It's become

  1858. a kind of,

  1859. gone beyond

  1860. a passion

  1861. to an

  1862. obsession.

  1863. some of

  1864. that has

  1865. been fostered

  1866. by a

  1867. church,

  1868. which generally

  1869. I have a lot

  1870. of respect

  1871. for,

  1872. the Pentecostal

  1873. church,

  1874. but their

  1875. idea is you

  1876. go to a

  1877. Pentecostal

  1878. meeting,

  1879. at the end

  1880. of the

  1881. meeting,

  1882. it's like

  1883. an auction

  1884. that the

  1885. gifts of

  1886. the spirit,

  1887. you decide

  1888. what gift

  1889. you'd like

  1890. and you

  1891. come forward

  1892. and the

  1893. pastor will

  1894. lay hands

  1895. on you

  1896. and that's

  1897. it,

  1898. you've got

  1899. it.

  1900. I don't

  1901. think that's

  1902. quite right

  1903. because I

  1904. don't think

  1905. we're all

  1906. meant to

  1907. have the

  1908. same

  1909. gifts.

  1910. And

  1911. again,

  1912. I think

  1913. this is

  1914. really wrong,

  1915. the idea

  1916. that I'm

  1917. only truly

  1918. a Christian

  1919. if I can

  1920. speak in

  1921. tongues.

  1922. I think

  1923. that's not

  1924. right and

  1925. my argument

  1926. for that

  1927. would be

  1928. that these

  1929. are gifts,

  1930. we're not

  1931. all meant

  1932. to have

  1933. all the

  1934. gifts,

  1935. we're all

  1936. meant to

  1937. have some

  1938. gifts but

  1939. not all

  1940. the gifts.

  1941. And I

  1942. think there's

  1943. a confusion

  1944. there with

  1945. the fruit

  1946. of the

  1947. spirit,

  1948. love,

  1949. joy,

  1950. patience,

  1951. kindliness,

  1952. all that

  1953. stuff.

  1954. Those are

  1955. the kind

  1956. of values

  1957. that all

  1958. of us

  1959. should have.

  1960. How might

  1961. I discover

  1962. my gifts?

  1963. Well,

  1964. my advice

  1965. would be

  1966. talk to

  1967. somebody who

  1968. loves you

  1969. enough to

  1970. tell you

  1971. the truth.

  1972. And there's

  1973. a reason

  1974. for that.

  1975. And the

  1976. reason for

  1977. that is

  1978. people can

  1979. be deluded.

  1980. Sometimes we

  1981. think we're

  1982. good at

  1983. stuff we're

  1984. really not

  1985. good at.

  1986. And so

  1987. I think we

  1988. need to be

  1989. careful with

  1990. that.

  1991. And the

  1992. second thing

  1993. is envying

  1994. other people's

  1995. gifts is

  1996. not an

  1997. attractive

  1998. characteristic

  1999. in local

  2000. churches.

  2001. Ignorance.

  2002. Paul says,

  2003. I wrote

  2004. to you

  2005. because I

  2006. don't want

  2007. you to

  2008. remain in

  2009. ignorance

  2010. about

  2011. spiritual

  2012. gifts.

  2013. Well,

  2014. that

  2015. ignorance,

  2016. I'm afraid,

  2017. goes on

  2018. in the

  2019. churches

  2020. today.

  2021. And I

  2022. just want

  2023. to refer

  2024. to something

  2025. that I

  2026. meet hordes

  2027. Christians.

  2028. Some of

  2029. them really

  2030. long-standing

  2031. and faithful

  2032. Christians,

  2033. who will

  2034. say to me

  2035. stuff like,

  2036. well, I

  2037. don't really

  2038. get anything

  2039. out of

  2040. church today,

  2041. but I

  2042. still go

  2043. because I'd

  2044. rather go

  2045. than feel bad

  2046. about not

  2047. going.

  2048. and I

  2049. think probably

  2050. everybody in

  2051. the house

  2052. tonight understands

  2053. a little bit

  2054. of why

  2055. that is.

  2056. But just

  2057. imagine for

  2058. a moment

  2059. a church

  2060. where the

  2061. ministries that

  2062. the church

  2063. was called

  2064. to were

  2065. looked after

  2066. by people

  2067. who were

  2068. gifted in

  2069. that area.

  2070. I think

  2071. I got to

  2072. the somewhat

  2073. radical view

  2074. that I

  2075. would rather

  2076. not do a

  2077. ministry in

  2078. church rather

  2079. than do it

  2080. with people

  2081. who were not

  2082. gifted to do

  2083. it.

  2084. And the

  2085. trouble with

  2086. that is

  2087. it means

  2088. there's got

  2089. to be some

  2090. tough and

  2091. grown-up

  2092. conversations.

  2093. You know,

  2094. I was

  2095. fairly young

  2096. when I

  2097. became a

  2098. vicar for

  2099. the first

  2100. time and

  2101. I inherited

  2102. five licensed

  2103. lay ministers

  2104. all licensed

  2105. to preach.

  2106. I had to

  2107. tell them

  2108. all within

  2109. six months

  2110. you're not

  2111. going to

  2112. preach here

  2113. anymore.

  2114. None of

  2115. them left.

  2116. They all

  2117. seemed to

  2118. readily accept

  2119. that preaching

  2120. wasn't their

  2121. gift.

  2122. It's a slight

  2123. understatement

  2124. and there

  2125. was just

  2126. one of

  2127. those people

  2128. who I

  2129. would put

  2130. on for

  2131. the eight

  2132. o'clock

  2133. communion

  2134. service who

  2135. I thought

  2136. did a

  2137. very good

  2138. homily

  2139. particularly

  2140. if you're

  2141. ex-military

  2142. because nearly

  2143. all his

  2144. stories came

  2145. from his

  2146. time in

  2147. the army.

  2148. They had

  2149. no good

  2150. stories as

  2151. a matter

  2152. of fact.

  2153. And then

  2154. on the

  2155. maturity

  2156. front,

  2157. just very

  2158. briefly but

  2159. not

  2160. unimportantly,

  2161. Paul

  2162. imagines

  2163. that all

  2164. these gifts,

  2165. all these

  2166. orders of

  2167. ministry are

  2168. given to

  2169. build us

  2170. up,

  2171. that we

  2172. might attain

  2173. the kind

  2174. of unity

  2175. in Jesus

  2176. that he

  2177. envisages.

  2178. Paul in

  2179. these 16

  2180. verses gives

  2181. us a vision

  2182. of how the

  2183. church is

  2184. supposed to

  2185. work.

  2186. And you

  2187. know this,

  2188. growing up

  2189. doesn't come

  2190. that easily

  2191. when it

  2192. comes to

  2193. our

  2194. relationship

  2195. with God

  2196. through Jesus

  2197. Christ.

  2198. The process

  2199. of sanctification

  2200. can be

  2201. very painful.

  2202. I do

  2203. remember

  2204. that when

  2205. some of

  2206. our daughters

  2207. were young,

  2208. they'd go

  2209. to bed and

  2210. then they'd

  2211. appear about

  2212. an hour later

  2213. and say,

  2214. Mummy, I

  2215. can't get

  2216. to sleep.

  2217. And Mummy

  2218. would say,

  2219. why?

  2220. And they'd

  2221. say, my

  2222. legs are

  2223. aching.

  2224. And I

  2225. don't know

  2226. whether we

  2227. ever consulted

  2228. a doctor,

  2229. but the

  2230. general theory

  2231. on that was

  2232. that these

  2233. are growing

  2234. pains.

  2235. Have you

  2236. heard that

  2237. phrase?

  2238. Growing

  2239. pains.

  2240. Well, when

  2241. we grow in

  2242. the faith,

  2243. there's some

  2244. pain.

  2245. It's not

  2246. all easy

  2247. going, partly

  2248. because to

  2249. grow in

  2250. faith, we're

  2251. going to have

  2252. to stop doing

  2253. some things

  2254. that we did

  2255. and start

  2256. doing some

  2257. things that

  2258. we weren't

  2259. doing.

  2260. Maturity

  2261. doesn't come

  2262. easily.

  2263. Thirdly, I

  2264. think the

  2265. maturity of

  2266. the church,

  2267. and this was

  2268. critical in

  2269. the early

  2270. church and

  2271. doesn't seem

  2272. to even be

  2273. an issue

  2274. today, I

  2275. think there

  2276. needs to be a

  2277. willingness to

  2278. call out wrong

  2279. teaching in our

  2280. churches.

  2281. That can cause

  2282. mayhem,

  2283. believe me.

  2284. And finally,

  2285. in verses

  2286. 15 and

  2287. 16, you

  2288. get a

  2289. great answer

  2290. to the

  2291. question,

  2292. whose

  2293. church is

  2294. it anyway?

  2295. These last

  2296. verses refer

  2297. in a, I

  2298. think,

  2299. spectacular and

  2300. wonderful way.

  2301. So the

  2302. whole point

  2303. of growing

  2304. up into

  2305. maturity is

  2306. that one

  2307. of the

  2308. outcomes of

  2309. that is

  2310. we will

  2311. no longer

  2312. be infants

  2313. being tossed

  2314. back and

  2315. forth by

  2316. waves and

  2317. blown here

  2318. and there

  2319. by every

  2320. wind of

  2321. teaching and

  2322. by the

  2323. cunning and

  2324. craftiness of

  2325. men.

  2326. See, Paul's

  2327. already talked

  2328. about the

  2329. destructive power

  2330. of the rulers

  2331. and authorities

  2332. in the heavenly

  2333. places, the

  2334. malign influences.

  2335. He's talking

  2336. about human

  2337. beings here.

  2338. Human

  2339. beings who

  2340. will distort

  2341. the truth.

  2342. He says,

  2343. speaking the

  2344. truth in

  2345. love,

  2346. you might

  2347. want to

  2348. ask a

  2349. question

  2350. about that.

  2351. Really

  2352. important but

  2353. really difficult.

  2354. We will

  2355. in all

  2356. things grow

  2357. up into

  2358. him who

  2359. is the

  2360. head, that

  2361. is Christ.

  2362. From him

  2363. the whole

  2364. body joined

  2365. and held

  2366. together by

  2367. every supporting

  2368. ligament grows

  2369. and builds

  2370. itself up in

  2371. love as

  2372. each part

  2373. does its

  2374. work.

  2375. can you

  2376. imagine a

  2377. church that

  2378. was so

  2379. safe in

  2380. the company

  2381. of one

  2382. another that

  2383. we could

  2384. speak the

  2385. truth to

  2386. one another

  2387. in love?

  2388. I've heard

  2389. a load of

  2390. Christians speak

  2391. the truth but

  2392. not very

  2393. kindly.

  2394. And I've

  2395. had a lot of

  2396. loving Christians

  2397. who know that

  2398. some truth needs

  2399. to be added to

  2400. the conversation

  2401. but for

  2402. whatever reason

  2403. don't add

  2404. it.

  2405. no speaking

  2406. the truth in

  2407. love is

  2408. I think

  2409. really important

  2410. and the thing

  2411. is you don't

  2412. have to like

  2413. it.

  2414. You know

  2415. I think

  2416. Anthony and

  2417. I have been

  2418. married long

  2419. enough for

  2420. her to feel

  2421. she can speak

  2422. the truth in

  2423. love, well

  2424. mostly to me.

  2425. And I

  2426. would love to

  2427. say to you

  2428. that my

  2429. testimony is

  2430. when she

  2431. speaks the

  2432. truth to

  2433. me love

  2434. I fall

  2435. to my

  2436. knees

  2437. and thank

  2438. her for

  2439. her wonderful

  2440. insight and

  2441. input into

  2442. my, no I

  2443. resist it

  2444. initially.

  2445. Now go away

  2446. and think

  2447. about it and

  2448. darn it she's

  2449. right.

  2450. So look

  2451. I'm going to

  2452. draw a line

  2453. under it there

  2454. there's so

  2455. much more I

  2456. could have said

  2457. on these 16

  2458. verses to try

  2459. hand.

  2460. Help you

  2461. have a

  2462. renewed

  2463. vision of

  2464. what the

  2465. church

  2466. could be

  2467. like.

  2468. And the

  2469. only way

  2470. that will

  2471. happen is

  2472. if you get

  2473. that vision

  2474. and work

  2475. towards it

  2476. in your own

  2477. walk with

  2478. Jesus.

  2479. what do

  2480. what do
