  1. Why don't we pray. Gracious Lord, thank you very much indeed for your word and thank you that the Lord Jesus taught that your word is truth and that your truth can set people like us free and so we ask now Father that you would fill our hearts afresh with your Holy Spirit.

  2. That we might discern your truth and your truth would free us to be the people you call us to be in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  3. So I have two major challenges before me this morning and only you will know whether I succeed in it.

  4. One is to try and show you that there is a very significant link between what was going on on Palm Sunday on the one hand and secondly, my second challenge is I have to come back on Tuesday evening and give a lecture on exactly the same passage and I want to try and avoid repetition.

  5. So that those of you who come on Tuesday evenings and more are welcome but those of you who do come and have made it a kind of Lenten discipline, the bottom line is you'll get something different.

  6. See that's really enthused you.

  7. So what I want to talk about at first is that amazing story of the triumphal entry and the incredible way in which the crowd on that first Palm Sunday welcomed Jesus with respect and honour, throwing down palm leaves and their coats to give him honour and glory.

  8. And then just five days later and then just five days later, shouting crucify.

  9. Got to be something going on there.

  10. I mean, if for no other reason I say this, it reminds me of my fickleness as a Christian.

  11. How easy it is that I can be tripped up on things that I should have put to death years ago in my life.

  12. And what I want to say is the common thread between the first Palm Sunday and Ephesians 6 verses 10 to the end is a very important principle.

    Ephesians 6:10

  13. It's a theological principle but interestingly it's also a philosophical principle.

  14. And it's this, that if we start with wrong assumptions, the outcomes will be both unpredictable and potentially tragic.

  15. On the 28th of January 1986, something horrific happened.

  16. Can anybody remember what that was?

  17. No?

  18. No?

  19. That if we έ

  20. That if έ

  21. That if έ

  22. !

  23. That if έ

  24. That έ

  25. shuttle. And an engineering company

  26. immediately before the launch

  27. gave a report which said that in low temperatures

  28. this particular component may not work.

  29. The day of launch it was minus one

  30. at the launch site. The O-rings failed.

  31. The second

  32. was this kind of philosophical thing and that is

  33. what they call deniable

  34. resistance. So the principle is

  35. that if you've had a

  36. component throw a mistake in the past but it didn't cause any

  37. serious ramifications, that is kind of plausible deniability.

  38. And you can go ahead despite this fault being manifest.

  39. And the third thing was, and this is truly shocking to me, the pressure to get that launch done on that date, on that time was immense.

  40. It came from the media, it came from the general public and even more shockingly it came from the American government.

  41. I don't know if this is true but it is written up there.

  42. The president sent a message on the day of the launch

  43. and just says, get this thing done, right?

  44. And look what happened.

  45. You start to make wrong assumptions and you will end up with unpredictable and sometimes tragic, tragic outcomes.

  46. What was wrong on that Palm Sunday?

  47. Were there any assumptions that weren't right?

  48. Well, I think you can quite clearly see that there were.

  49. The first thing is, Jesus chose to make his entry to Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

  50. I mean, that would be a bit like

  51. Lewis Hamilton showing up at a Formula One Grand Prix

  52. in a larder.

  53. With apologies to any larder owners in the congregation.

  54. Inoppropriate.

  55. What would have been more fitting for a king would have been a horse.

  56. An animal of nobility as opposed to a beast of burden.

  57. This story is kind of pregnant with little clues

  58. that the congregation who were shouting Hosanna

  59. didn't really understand what was going on,

  60. their assumptions were all wrong.

  61. They were shouting Hosanna.

  62. Save now.

  63. That's what it literally means.

  64. In that culture at that time,

  65. that was a political slogan

  66. held by Jewish activists

  67. who wanted to create an insurrection

  68. and get rid of the Romans.

  69. Jesus didn't come to be a political Messiah.

  70. He didn't come to defeat the enemy out there.

  71. He came to defeat the enemy that's in us all.

  72. Romans 3 verse 23

    Romans 3:23

  73. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  74. What Jesus came to do

  75. was to save us from the consequences of our sin.

  76. And that ended up on Good Friday

  77. on that cross of Calvary.

  78. Sometimes shut my eyes

  79. and think of Jesus on that cross

  80. who died for my sin

  81. and for your sin

  82. and for the sins of all

  83. who turned to him in faith.

  84. The assumption that was wrong

  85. was that Jesus was going to be a political Messiah

  86. and when they saw him imprisoned

  87. and being spat upon and tortured,

  88. they thought they'd dream.

  89. They thought they'd woken up

  90. and it was a nightmare.

  91. And the one who they thought

  92. would bring victory over the Roman army

  93. ended up being beaten in worldly terms.

  94. The unpredictable outcome was

  95. that the crowd that shouted Hosanna

  96. ended up screaming hysterically,

  97. crucify.

  98. I don't know that anybody

  99. on the eve of that first Palm Sunday

  100. would have guessed that.

  101. But it made me wonder

  102. as I read Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  103. is it true that it's common

  104. that Christians often make wrong assumptions

  105. about God?

  106. I know Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  107. kind of gets your weird meter

  108. flickering a bit.

  109. When Paul writes stuff like this,

  110. our struggle is not against flesh and blood

  111. but against the rulers,

  112. against the authorities,

  113. against the powers of this dark world

  114. and against the spiritual forces

  115. of evil in the heavenly realm.

  116. See, there's an assumption here

  117. that I think we make

  118. that this is kind of the product

  119. of some weird and ancient cosmology

  120. that educated and sophisticated

  121. people like us

  122. can't believe that kind of demonology stuff.

  123. But can we afford to avoid it?

  124. Is it a wrong assumption

  125. to think that this is the writing

  126. of another time?

  127. And then there are some Christians.

  128. It's an amazing dichotomy, I think.

  129. And the dichotomy is this,

  130. that I think the majority of certainly

  131. good old Anglican churchgoers

  132. don't take this seriously at all.

  133. They think this is just weird stuff

  134. and, you know,

  135. maybe Paul had a bad day or something.

  136. But it's a reality.

  137. It's in Scripture.

  138. It can't be so easily dismissed.

  139. And the dichotomy on the other end is

  140. there are people

  141. who are obsessed by this idea

  142. and find the devil

  143. under every unturned stone

  144. in every soul's life.

  145. Surely,

  146. there is both truth

  147. and there is balance

  148. to be heard

  149. in Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  150. And the tragic outcome,

  151. I think of us ignoring

  152. this writing of St. Paul,

  153. occurred,

  154. we can read about

  155. in Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  156. This is a very severe

  157. indictment

  158. written by St. Paul

  159. about a godless society.

  160. He says this,

  161. for although they knew God,

  162. they neither glorified him as God

  163. nor gave thanks to him,

  164. but their thinking became futile

  165. and their foolish hearts

  166. were darkened.

  167. Although they claimed to be wise,

  168. they became fools

  169. and exchanged the glory

  170. of the immortal God

  171. for images

  172. made to look like

  173. the mortal man

  174. and the birds and animals

  175. as reptiles.

  176. And then this terrifying verse,

  177. terrifying pronouncement

  178. over a godless society.

  179. God gave them over

  180. in the sinful desires

  181. of their hearts.

  182. See,

  183. somehow,

  184. somehow,

  185. you have to explain

  186. the way the world is.

  187. The tragic outcome

  188. of us ignoring this stuff

  189. that St. Paul is writing here

  190. is the world that you and I live in.

  191. I think St. Paul

  192. might have summarized

  193. his teaching

  194. saying,

  195. just start

  196. how you mean

  197. to go on.

  198. Get your assumptions

  199. right

  200. because if we don't,

  201. we will end up

  202. where we are

  203. and we will know

  204. why we are there.

  205. Paul talks about,

  206. in the first phrase,

  207. the rulers

  208. and authorities.

  209. Normally,

  210. in the New Testament,

  211. when those are referred to,

  212. they're referring to

  213. human beings

  214. who've become unrighteous

  215. and got it wrong.

  216. I suppose,

  217. in the last century,

  218. there are some

  219. terrifying examples

  220. of that.

  221. Nazism.

  222. What a shocking idea.

  223. Racism.

  224. What a shocking idea.

  225. Stalin's

  226. attempts to

  227. force people

  228. into communism.

  229. One of the things

  230. that we forget,

  231. for instance,

  232. about the Ukraine

  233. is that Stalin

  234. starved to death

  235. up to six million

  236. Ukrainians.

  237. See,

  238. this stuff

  239. is not just

  240. the product

  241. of somebody

  242. who's a bit iffy

  243. morally.

  244. This is

  245. concerted,

  246. systemic,

  247. horrific

  248. behavior.

  249. And for those

  250. of you

  251. who buy

  252. the argument

  253. that Nazism

  254. only spread

  255. because people

  256. were scared

  257. of the ramifications

  258. of not supporting it,

  259. I'm sure there was

  260. an element of that,

  261. but there is plenty

  262. of evidence,

  263. a whole book

  264. written about it,

  265. which is the

  266. letters of

  267. German soldiers

  268. writing home

  269. to their parents,

  270. boasting

  271. that they

  272. stabbed a

  273. Jewish baby

  274. that same

  275. day.

  276. You want to

  277. sit light

  278. to this

  279. teaching?

  280. You need to

  281. be very,

  282. very careful.

  283. And Paul

  284. goes on from

  285. there,

  286. and I think

  287. this is where

  288. our weird

  289. meters really

  290. start to flick

  291. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  292. chapter 6.

  293. And he

  294. then talks

  295. about not

  296. just the

  297. rulers and

  298. authorities,

  299. he goes on,

  300. our struggle's

  301. not against

  302. flesh and

  303. blood,

  304. against the

  305. rulers,

  306. against the

  307. authorities,

  308. against the

  309. powers of

  310. this dark

  311. world,

  312. and against

  313. the spiritual

  314. forces of

  315. evil in

  316. the heavenly

  317. realms.

  318. Wow.

  319. That does

  320. sound weird,

  321. doesn't it?

  322. The problem

  323. is these

  324. malign forces

  325. that exist

  326. outside our

  327. kind of human

  328. existence

  329. very often

  330. work through

  331. influencing

  332. human beings.

  333. People like

  334. you,

  335. and people

  336. like me.

  337. You get

  338. these amazing,

  339. amazing and

  340. horrible facts

  341. that in the

  342. 1940s,

  343. towards the

  344. end of the

  345. 40s,

  346. all this

  347. optimistic

  348. stuff was

  349. being written

  350. about,

  351. we won't

  352. ever allow

  353. this to

  354. happen in

  355. the world

  356. again,

  357. and we'll

  358. build a

  359. new society

  360. and a

  361. new community.

  362. All

  363. sounded

  364. great,

  365. but then

  366. we discovered

  367. that Nazism

  368. is growing

  369. in the

  370. Nordic

  371. countries.

  372. Reckoned

  373. generally to

  374. be the

  375. most civilized

  376. societies in

  377. Europe,

  378. they have

  379. a burgeoning,

  380. angry,

  381. vicious,

  382. right wing

  383. waiting to

  384. influence the

  385. way society

  386. should be

  387. as far as

  388. they are

  389. concerned.

  390. That's why

  391. we are

  392. where we

  393. are.

  394. And I

  395. call this

  396. talk and

  397. my stuff on

  398. Tuesday,

  399. the forever

  400. war.

  401. What is

  402. Paul's main

  403. point here?

  404. Very

  405. simple in

  406. a way.

  407. His main

  408. point is

  409. a spiritual

  410. enemy needs

  411. to be

  412. approached and

  413. engaged with

  414. spiritual

  415. weapons,

  416. not the

  417. weapons of

  418. this world.

  419. world.

  420. I want to

  421. talk some

  422. more about

  423. that on

  424. Tuesday

  425. evening.

  426. But it's a

  427. very simple

  428. idea,

  429. isn't it?

  430. I mean,

  431. you wouldn't

  432. feel it would

  433. be appropriate

  434. with you to

  435. go and play a

  436. game of

  437. hockey using

  438. an axe

  439. instead of a

  440. hockey stick.

  441. might have

  442. crossed your

  443. mind,

  444. but you

  445. haven't done

  446. it.

  447. You wouldn't

  448. think that it

  449. would be

  450. appropriate for

  451. our marines to

  452. go into war

  453. with water

  454. pistols.

  455. No.

  456. You have to

  457. define the

  458. enemy and

  459. then work out

  460. what will be

  461. the tools that

  462. will defeat

  463. that enemy.

  464. I want to

  465. remind you of

  466. something really

  467. important.

  468. And again,

  469. I think,

  470. because the

  471. way the world

  472. is, we're

  473. inclined to

  474. kind of forget

  475. this.

  476. That we are

  477. fighting not

  478. for victory,

  479. but we're

  480. fighting from

  481. victory.

  482. New Testament

  483. gives us

  484. plenty of

  485. examples of

  486. this kind of

  487. teaching.

  488. The idea

  489. that on

  490. the cross

  491. of Calvary,

  492. Jesus

  493. defeated

  494. Satan

  495. once and

  496. for all.

  497. And you

  498. say,

  499. hang on,

  500. how can

  501. that be?

  502. How can

  503. the world

  504. be the way

  505. it is if

  506. Jesus has

  507. already defeated

  508. the devil and

  509. those authorities

  510. in the heavenly

  511. realms?

  512. well, I

  513. agree, that's

  514. a difficult

  515. problem to

  516. explain.

  517. I kind of

  518. think of it

  519. like this, and

  520. I hope this is

  521. helpful.

  522. I am told, I'm

  523. not a farmer and

  524. never have been,

  525. but I am told

  526. that if you take a

  527. chicken in the

  528. yard and you

  529. chop its head

  530. off, it will

  531. race around the

  532. farmyard in a

  533. rather frenzied

  534. way and then

  535. drop dead.

  536. I think we

  537. live in a

  538. season where

  539. in a sense

  540. the devil's

  541. head has been

  542. chopped, but

  543. he's still

  544. creating carnage

  545. in this

  546. farmyard called

  547. the world.

  548. And finally,

  549. that victory

  550. over the

  551. devil will be

  552. complete on

  553. the day of

  554. the Lord,

  555. when the Lord

  556. returns and

  557. pulls down the

  558. curtain on

  559. human history.

  560. victory.

  561. We're

  562. fighting from

  563. victory, not

  564. for victory.

  565. You are, to

  566. quote the

  567. parlance of the

  568. modern business

  569. science world,

  570. you are winners

  571. if you are

  572. disciples of

  573. Jesus Christ.

  574. And Paul's

  575. advice to us

  576. is to be

  577. strong.

  578. Be strong.

  579. In other

  580. words, don't

  581. be afraid.

  582. There's no

  583. need to fear.

  584. You're fighting

  585. from victory, not

  586. for it.

  587. Be strong in

  588. the Lord and

  589. in the power of

  590. his might.

  591. I wonder

  592. today if I

  593. said to you,

  594. give yourselves a

  595. mark out of

  596. ten in terms of

  597. how strong do

  598. you feel in

  599. the Lord.

  600. Ten out of

  601. ten being,

  602. you're somebody

  603. I can't

  604. imagine.

  605. One out of

  606. ten being,

  607. you haven't

  608. even thought

  609. about this.

  610. I suspect

  611. that most of

  612. us would not

  613. rank ourselves,

  614. maybe for

  615. reasons of

  616. humility, maybe

  617. not, but I

  618. don't think we

  619. would rank

  620. ourselves

  621. particularly

  622. highly in

  623. terms of

  624. where we

  625. are.

  626. So I

  627. want to

  628. end today

  629. by

  630. suggesting

  631. six things

  632. that you

  633. might like

  634. to think

  635. about.

  636. All I

  637. think,

  638. based on

  639. the assumption

  640. that this

  641. spiritual war

  642. that's going

  643. on is

  644. real,

  645. and whether

  646. we accept

  647. it or not,

  648. we're caught

  649. up in it.

  650. what can

  651. I do?

  652. Well,

  653. first thing

  654. is,

  655. I always

  656. think this

  657. is a

  658. commendable

  659. spiritual

  660. lesson,

  661. and I

  662. learnt it

  663. from the

  664. special boat

  665. services and

  666. the Navy

  667. seals,

  668. you know,

  669. absolutely

  670. top military

  671. personnel,

  672. trained,

  673. trained,

  674. trained,

  675. and ready

  676. for action.

  677. But I

  678. think we

  679. shouldn't be

  680. passive about

  681. this spiritual

  682. war,

  683. but we

  684. should head

  685. to the

  686. cause of

  687. the trouble.

  688. Cause of

  689. the trouble,

  690. according to

  691. Paul,

  692. are these

  693. rulers and

  694. authorities,

  695. these forces

  696. in the

  697. cosmic places.

  698. The second

  699. thing is,

  700. and if you

  701. want to know

  702. about this,

  703. come along

  704. on Tuesday

  705. evening,

  706. understand the

  707. weaponry that

  708. God has

  709. supplied you

  710. with.

  711. The third

  712. thing is,

  713. audit your

  714. assumptions.

  715. I think we

  716. Christians

  717. carry around

  718. all kinds

  719. of weird

  720. assumptions

  721. which get

  722. us in

  723. big trouble.

  724. Shall I

  725. tell you

  726. one?

  727. How often

  728. have you

  729. heard it

  730. said,

  731. there's no

  732. such thing

  733. as an

  734. unanswered

  735. prayer?

  736. As an

  737. unanswered

  738. prayer?

  739. No,

  740. James tells

  741. us in

  742. his epistle,

  743. you don't

  744. ask,

  745. and when

  746. you do

  747. ask,

  748. you ask

  749. from selfish

  750. motives.

  751. Of course

  752. God's not

  753. going to

  754. recognise

  755. that.

  756. Mature

  757. prayer is

  758. praying for

  759. what God

  760. wants in

  761. any and

  762. every situation,

  763. not just

  764. praying for

  765. what I

  766. want.

  767. I remember

  768. a pastor's

  769. wife saying

  770. in a home

  771. group one

  772. day,

  773. not my

  774. wife incidentally,

  775. she was

  776. talking about,

  777. well she was

  778. really talking

  779. about the

  780. idea of

  781. what we call

  782. the prosperity

  783. gospel.

  784. That is,

  785. if you come

  786. to Jesus

  787. you'll be

  788. wealthy.

  789. Some of you

  790. are still

  791. waiting,

  792. right?

  793. And she

  794. said,

  795. quite openly,

  796. she said,

  797. I believe,

  798. somebody

  799. challenged her

  800. and said,

  801. well your

  802. husband drives

  803. around in

  804. a brand

  805. new,

  806. you know,

  807. top of

  808. the range

  809. Volvo,

  810. this is

  811. the pastor.

  812. And she

  813. said,

  814. well I

  815. believe,

  816. if we

  817. prayed for

  818. a bike,

  819. what God

  820. would have

  821. given us

  822. a bike,

  823. but if we

  824. prayed for

  825. a Volvo,

  826. top of the

  827. range,

  828. God would

  829. give us

  830. a top of

  831. the range

  832. Volvo.

  833. Is it

  834. really?

  835. Wrong

  836. assumption.

  837. If you

  838. ask from

  839. selfish

  840. motives,

  841. I should

  842. tell you

  843. that the

  844. pastor paid

  845. for this

  846. by taking

  847. the lion's

  848. share out

  849. of a local

  850. trust,

  851. which was

  852. meant for

  853. the maintenance

  854. of the

  855. building,

  856. but somehow

  857. in his own

  858. mind he

  859. settled on

  860. the idea

  861. of buying

  862. a top

  863. range

  864. Volvo.

  865. No such

  866. thing as

  867. an unanswered

  868. prayer.

  869. Everybody

  870. in this

  871. church

  872. knows what

  873. it is to

  874. say a

  875. prayer which

  876. is unanswered.

  877. Sometimes

  878. God knows

  879. best,

  880. right?

  881. There are

  882. all kinds

  883. of other

  884. examples of

  885. Christians who

  886. make poor

  887. assumptions.

  888. I mean,

  889. you know,

  890. obviously today

  891. one of them

  892. would be that

  893. if you

  894. ignore the

  895. spiritual

  896. battle,

  897. you make

  898. yourself

  899. vulnerable.

  900. Audit

  901. your

  902. assumptions.

  903. Ask

  904. yourself,

  905. do some

  906. of the

  907. things I

  908. say and

  909. believe in

  910. relation to

  911. my faith

  912. are actually

  913. right?

  914. Because if

  915. they're not,

  916. they're going

  917. to lead

  918. you into

  919. trouble.

  920. Fourthly,

  921. put on the

  922. full armor

  923. of God.

  924. You read

  925. about it

  926. there.

  927. It's not

  928. entirely clear

  929. what that is

  930. from reading

  931. it, but as

  932. I say, if

  933. you want to

  934. know more

  935. about that,

  936. come along

  937. on Tuesday.

  938. Promise no

  939. more cheap

  940. plugs.

  941. Fifthly,

  942. engage with

  943. Scripture.

  944. I can't

  945. tell you

  946. this enough,

  947. but part

  948. of the

  949. reason why

  950. so many

  951. Christians have

  952. suspect

  953. assumptions is

  954. they don't

  955. know their

  956. Bibles.

  957. else.

  958. I don't

  959. know, again,

  960. if I ask

  961. you the

  962. question,

  963. give yourself

  964. a mark,

  965. one out

  966. of ten,

  967. sorry, one

  968. to ten,

  969. on whether

  970. you know

  971. your Scripture,

  972. what would

  973. you say?

  974. There was

  975. a principle

  976. in English

  977. law, which

  978. was, I

  979. can't

  980. remember it,

  981. justice

  982. non

  983. excusat,

  984. what's the

  985. last verb?

  986. Anyway, it

  987. means ignorance

  988. of the law

  989. is no

  990. excuse.

  991. Justice

  992. ignorant

  993. is non

  994. excusat.

  995. And you

  996. have to ask

  997. yourself the

  998. question,

  999. well, being

  1000. ignorant of

  1001. God's Word,

  1002. is that

  1003. really going to

  1004. sound like a

  1005. good excuse

  1006. on the day

  1007. of judgment?

  1008. How many

  1009. of us

  1010. really

  1011. understand what

  1012. Jesus did

  1013. for us on

  1014. the cross?

  1015. How many

  1016. of us really

  1017. understand what

  1018. the humanity

  1019. of Jesus

  1020. cost him?

  1021. the crown

  1022. of thorns

  1023. here, and

  1024. believe me,

  1025. I really

  1026. hurt myself

  1027. just putting

  1028. it on

  1029. there.

  1030. Jesus

  1031. had it

  1032. rammed

  1033. on his

  1034. head.

  1035. Engage

  1036. with

  1037. Scripture

  1038. that you

  1039. might

  1040. understand

  1041. not just

  1042. the what

  1043. of Scripture,

  1044. but the

  1045. why of

  1046. Scripture.

  1047. Scripture.

  1048. And finally,

  1049. enlist today.

  1050. Stop walking

  1051. in the

  1052. darkness,

  1053. believing that

  1054. all our

  1055. problems are

  1056. just human

  1057. problems,

  1058. and that

  1059. stuff like

  1060. the spiritual

  1061. realities that

  1062. are malign and

  1063. influence us

  1064. are just not

  1065. true.

  1066. If you do

  1067. do that,

  1068. you're going

  1069. to find a

  1070. great excuse

  1071. as to why

  1072. the world

  1073. is the

  1074. way it

  1075. is.

  1076. The

  1077. motto

  1078. of those

  1079. American

  1080. Navy

  1081. Seals

  1082. is this,

  1083. the only

  1084. easy day

  1085. was

  1086. yesterday.

  1087. What they

  1088. mean by that

  1089. is in

  1090. their

  1091. language,

  1092. that's a

  1093. constant

  1094. need for

  1095. physical and

  1096. mental

  1097. exertion and

  1098. preparation.

  1099. But I

  1100. wonder if we

  1101. truly believe

  1102. that we

  1103. should give

  1104. the same

  1105. level of

  1106. exertion to

  1107. our spiritual

  1108. lives,

  1109. to become

  1110. spiritually

  1111. vigilant.

  1112. You are

  1113. fighting from

  1114. victory.

  1115. Paul wrote

  1116. this in

  1117. 1 Corinthians

  1118. 15.

  1119. But thanks

  1120. be to

  1121. God who

  1122. gives us

  1123. the

  1124. victory

  1125. through

  1126. our

  1127. Lord

  1128. Jesus

  1129. Christ.

  1130. Not who

  1131. will give,

  1132. not a

  1133. future

  1134. but a

  1135. present.

  1136. And in

  1137. all things,

  1138. he wrote in

  1139. Romans 8,

  1140. we are more

  1141. than conquerors

  1142. through him

  1143. who loved

  1144. us.

  1145. do you

  1146. even feel

  1147. like a

  1148. conqueror?

  1149. Do you

  1150. even

  1151. suspect that

  1152. there might

  1153. be some

  1154. victory in

  1155. the Christian

  1156. life that

  1157. you have

  1158. not

  1159. experienced

  1160. and you're

  1161. just

  1162. constantly

  1163. tripped

  1164. up?

  1165. Enlist

  1166. today.

  1167. take up

  1168. the weapons

  1169. that God

  1170. has given

  1171. you and

  1172. let's fight

  1173. this spiritual

  1174. battle that

  1175. exists in

  1176. our worlds,

  1177. sometimes in

  1178. our lives.

  1179. And let's

  1180. wake up and

  1181. become the

  1182. church God

  1183. wants us to

  1184. be.

  1185. Let's pray.

  1186. Our

  1187. Father, we

  1188. want to

  1189. pray against

  1190. our apathy,

  1191. our lack

  1192. of understanding

  1193. that leads

  1194. to wrong

  1195. assumptions.

  1196. Father, we

  1197. need the

  1198. solid food

  1199. of your

  1200. word.

  1201. And we

  1202. need to

  1203. remember that

  1204. according to

  1205. Paul in

  1206. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1207. chapter 3,

  1208. the hallmark,

  1209. the primary

  1210. characteristic of

  1211. spiritual

  1212. immaturity

  1213. is this,

  1214. worldliness.

  1215. the good

  1216. news Bible

  1217. puts it,

  1218. living as

  1219. the people

  1220. of this

  1221. world live.

  1222. Father, would

  1223. you please

  1224. help us to

  1225. be done

  1226. with that

  1227. and to

  1228. enlist as

  1229. serious

  1230. disciples who

  1231. take seriously

  1232. your word

  1233. and seek to

  1234. amend our

  1235. lives

  1236. accordingly.

  1237. God

  1238. God

  1239. will

  1240. be.

  1241. Father, send

  1242. !

  1243. send the

  1244. Holy Spirit

  1245. on your

  1246. people gathered

  1247. now.

  1248. And Lord, let

  1249. the work of

  1250. that spirit do

  1251. what your

  1252. word tells us

  1253. that your

  1254. spirit can do

  1255. for us and

  1256. that is

  1257. convict us.

  1258. Make it

  1259. clear to us

  1260. where we need

  1261. to make

  1262. improvements.

  1263. Father, I

  1264. pray that for

  1265. myself as

  1266. much as

  1267. for any

  1268. soul in

  1269. this church

  1270. today.

  1271. Come down,

  1272. O love

  1273. divine, fill

  1274. thou the

  1275. soul of

  1276. mine.

  1277. Lord, may

  1278. your church

  1279. awake and

  1280. may we be

  1281. ready to

  1282. face the

  1283. challenges of

  1284. the world,

  1285. the flesh,

  1286. and the

  1287. devil and

  1288. to be

  1289. conquerors.

  1290. In

  1291. Christ's name

  1292. we pray.

  1293. Amen.
