  2. in. It is language which is foreign to us, but I think in the end we have to grapple with,

  3. and I think we're feeling this very much at the moment, that we're having to grapple with

  4. the ongoing issues of the fallenness of our humanity. And it's a very critical kind of

  5. existential question which occurs to me in the 21st century, and that is a question that I think

  6. Christians have asked throughout the whole of Christian history. Why is the world the way that it is?

  7. What is the world the way that it is? Politicians since the Enlightenment have talked about what they call continuous progress.

  8. And at a lot of levels, we can tick that box. Why is it the world is the way that it is?

  9. I want to read to you some words. I mean, I always think, you know, I do it, we all do it a little bit,

  10. you know, we complain about the world as it is, and that's fully intelligible to me. But it shouldn't

  11. surprise us in a way if we know our scriptures. Let me just give you one passage of scripture,

  12. one of many I could have read. And this is from 2 Timothy chapter 3. And Paul writes these words,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  13. mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves,

  14. lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love,

  15. unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous,

  16. rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure, rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness,

  17. but denying its power, have nothing to do with such people. I mean, you read that stuff and you think,

  18. and Paul never actually had read a word of social media. And yet he's talking about what I think is

  19. the natural outflow of our fallenness as human beings. And I made this point on Sunday in church,

  20. I'm going to use slightly different words today, but I think what's great about Ephesians chapter 6 is

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  21. it reinforces this idea, not just a philosophical concept, but also a theological concept,

  22. that when we think correctly, when we believe correctly, the likelihood is that our actions

  23. will be more appropriate. Wrong thinking, and in the early church, this is a massive issue, you know,

  24. the early patristic fathers of the church, spent their time trying to weed out orthodox faith from heresy.

  25. And you can imagine, they had to do that without a copy of the New Testament.

  26. The canon of the New Testament probably wasn't formed until the end of the fourth century.

  27. And so for the first years of the church, they're trying to sort out these issues.

  28. And the only text they had in front of them was the Old Testament.

  29. And as Paul points out in Ephesians 6, the devil is in the detail.

  30. It refers here to the various forms of spiritual oppression that might, well, not might, but will befall Christians in all ages.

  31. And Paul says here, you know, our response to this is to put on the full armour of God.

  32. In 2 Corinthians chapter 11, verses 13 and 14, we read this.

    2 Corinthians 11:13

  33. It talks about men being false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.

  34. Basically, what he's saying here is that Satan himself, this is verse 14, masquerades as an angel of light.

  35. That is, that Satan, I never saw the movie The Exorcist, and I hope you didn't either, because I gather it's awful.

  36. But the big deal with it is that at one point, apparently, this young teenage girl who is possessed of the devil,

  37. she's kind of, her head is spinning through 360 degrees, whilst at the same time she's vomiting green bile.

  38. And you kind of think to yourself, well, if that's the work of the devil, frankly, I'm quite keen to avoid it.

  39. But the devil masquerades as an angel of light.

  40. And that means the devil is in the detail of Christian living today.

  41. What can appear to be good can, in fact, be the devil masquerading himself.

  42. So what's going on here?

  43. The first word of this reading is, finally, in the version, the NIV, the English version, it says, to end.

  44. Actually, that doesn't really carry what Paul was intending to communicate here, I don't believe.

  45. Finally, Paul was saying, in the light of everything I've written to you,

  46. here's something you really need to take note of.

  47. You need to take note of the fact that life is not going to be uncomplicated.

  48. Even if you believe the right things and you adhere to the teaching I've given you

  49. in Ephesians 4 and 5, in the first bit of Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  50. you need to be aware of this.

  51. And Paul's reading of the problem is very clear.

  52. Our fight is not against people on earth.

  53. See, I think that one of the big confusions is that in the church today,

  54. we kind of have this dichotomy.

  55. And the dichotomy is this, that some people don't even think about this fight

  56. that's taking place in the heavenly places.

  57. And some people, thankfully I believe a minority in the church, are obsessed by it.

  58. And every stone they turn over in church life, the devil they see at work.

  59. I mean, I think you have to be very, very careful with that kind of approach to faith.

  60. So the finally is connecting this important section of Paul's teaching here with what's gone before.

  61. And his reading of the problem is, this is not the fight that many of you imagine that you will be in.

  62. And Paul's solution is in chapter 13.

  63. This is why you need to get God's full armour.

  64. I'm going to talk about that in a bit more length.

  65. But his reading of the problem is challenging to us.

  66. And what it means is that all of Christian history will be messy.

  67. And some of you will be, I apologise for a little bit of repetition for what I said in here on Sunday morning.

  68. But Paul's, it's messy.

  69. Because the general teaching of scripture is that on the cross of Calvary and the resurrection of Jesus,

  70. the devil has been defeated once and for all.

  71. And you say, well, if he's been defeated once and for all.

  72. Paul wrote this kind of stuff, you know, talks about being more than conquerors in the Corinthian literature.

  73. If the devil's already defeated, well, how come the way the world is the way the world is?

  74. And I used an analogy from the world of farming.

  75. And I said that what I think is happening here.

  76. Is, you know, I'm told this.

  77. I mean, I don't know.

  78. I've never seen it.

  79. And really, I never want to.

  80. But I'm told if you chop the head off a chicken in the farmyard,

  81. the chicken will race around the farmyard three or four times before it collapses dead.

  82. And I think that that's what's happening in the era in which we live.

  83. Satan has been defeated forever, but with his head chopped, metaphorically,

  84. he's still able to race around creating carnage.

  85. And we see some of that carnage every day in our newspapers.

  86. And Paul's great solution is you need to put on the full armor of God.

  87. And anybody who thinks that becoming a Christian and being in a church is like a free pass into la-la land

  88. is amazingly mistaken.

  89. I mean, you should know this because you know that in churches we have some of the same problems that people out there have.

  90. So Paul's diagnosis is that we need to put on the full armor of God.

  91. Wear God's armor, says Paul, so that you can fight against the devil's clever tricks.

  92. This is subtle.

  93. As I say, if the devil's subtle tricks were people with their heads revolving 360 degrees whilst vomiting bile,

  94. we'd have no problem avoiding that.

  95. We wouldn't want that, it's clear.

  96. But the devil's clever tricks, his wily tricks, it says in some of the older translations,

  97. our fight is not against people on earth.

  98. Well, I think that's kind of complicated.

  99. Paul goes on to say here that we're fighting against rulers and authorities.

  100. And I think what Paul would say to us

  101. would square with a Chinese military general

  102. is a person who's name is

  103. Sanju.

  104. And Sanju wrote this.

  105. He said,

  106. Know your enemy and know yourself

  107. and you will not be in danger

  108. in a hundred battles.

  109. See, I think what this general understood was

  110. that understanding your enemy

  111. is critical in any engagement

  112. of that enemy.

  113. But at the same time,

  114. understanding yourself

  115. is important.

  116. If you think that

  117. because you're a Christian,

  118. you are totally immune

  119. to being influenced

  120. by these malign powers

  121. that Paul understands

  122. lie behind

  123. a lot of difficult

  124. issues in our world today,

  125. I think you might be deluded.

  126. And Paul here says

  127. that the bottom line is

  128. that

  129. he describes

  130. four kinds of enemy.

  131. the first one is

  132. the rulers

  133. and the authorities.

  134. And normally in Scripture,

  135. when rulers and authorities

  136. are

  137. referred to,

  138. Paul's talking to

  139. earthly government,

  140. talking about

  141. earthly government.

  142. And I think

  143. what Paul would tell us

  144. about this is

  145. that

  146. the problem

  147. with the subtle work

  148. of the devil

  149. is that

  150. he very often

  151. employs human agency.

  152. and

  153. again,

  154. forgive a little repetition

  155. from Sunday,

  156. but

  157. you know,

  158. what do we live through

  159. in the 20th century?

  160. We live through

  161. Nazism.

  162. This is,

  163. you know,

  164. not just

  165. a kind of

  166. bit of a grouse

  167. that Adolf Hitler

  168. had with Jewish people

  169. and Roman Catholics

  170. and gay people.

  171. this was

  172. systemic

  173. brutality

  174. on a horrendous scale.

  175. And we

  176. tell ourselves,

  177. you know,

  178. as we did

  179. after the

  180. Second World War,

  181. there was this

  182. literature

  183. that came into play

  184. which is called

  185. utopian literature.

  186. And it was

  187. basically

  188. based on the premise

  189. the world

  190. must never allow

  191. this kind of thing,

  192. i.e.

  193. world war

  194. to occur again.

  195. I don't know,

  196. you know,

  197. I think it probably

  198. would be exaggeration

  199. at this point in time

  200. to say that

  201. we stand on the edge

  202. of nuclear war

  203. at the moment.

  204. I don't honestly

  205. believe that myself.

  206. But there are

  207. several commentators

  208. who think

  209. that the only way

  210. this kind of

  211. standing up

  212. against

  213. Vladimir Putin

  214. and the

  215. Chinese government.

  216. The only way

  217. that that can get

  218. resolved

  219. is through

  220. nuclear war.

  221. And I think,

  222. you know,

  223. we all know enough

  224. about nuclear war

  225. to know

  226. there are no

  227. winners

  228. in that kind

  229. of scenario.

  230. So one of the

  231. tricky things is,

  232. I mean,

  233. governments have

  234. always been

  235. vaguely incompetent,

  236. haven't they?

  237. And I wouldn't

  238. basically,

  239. you know,

  240. that's not,

  241. that's an

  242. apolitical statement.

  243. I mean,

  244. it's just that

  245. actually government's

  246. a really difficult

  247. thing.

  248. And authorities

  249. are going to make

  250. kind of natural

  251. mistakes because

  252. sometimes

  253. their policies

  254. have unintended

  255. consequences.

  256. That's not what

  257. Paul's talking

  258. about here.

  259. He's talking about

  260. when the devil

  261. influences through

  262. his wily tricks,

  263. rulers and

  264. authorities who

  265. dream up awful

  266. things,

  267. genocide,

  268. Nazism,

  269. you know,

  270. Stalin in

  271. Soviet Russia,

  272. you know,

  273. starved up to

  274. six million

  275. Ukrainians

  276. during his

  277. attempts to

  278. implement

  279. communism

  280. across the,

  281. across

  282. what became

  283. the Soviet

  284. Union.

  285. And then

  286. Paul talks

  287. about

  288. the powers

  289. of this

  290. world's

  291. darkness

  292. against the

  293. spiritual

  294. powers of

  295. evil

  296. in the

  297. heavenly

  298. places.

  299. I find it

  300. difficult to

  301. describe this

  302. to you because

  303. Paul doesn't

  304. go into a

  305. great description.

  306. And I

  307. wouldn't blame

  308. you if you

  309. were sitting

  310. there saying,

  311. well,

  312. come on,

  313. Mike,

  314. you know,

  315. this is just

  316. a kind of

  317. ancient

  318. cosmology that

  319. we don't

  320. have to

  321. take seriously

  322. today.

  323. Well,

  324. let me tell

  325. you,

  326. Jesus took

  327. it seriously.

  328. The early

  329. church took

  330. it seriously.

  331. The Roman

  332. church today

  333. takes it

  334. seriously.

  335. The Orthodox

  336. church today

  337. takes it

  338. seriously.

  339. So just be a

  340. little careful

  341. if you want

  342. to dispose

  343. of this in

  344. the trash

  345. can of

  346. history.

  347. history.

  348. These powers

  349. are at work

  350. in the world.

  351. The powers

  352. of this dark

  353. world and the

  354. spiritual forces

  355. of evil in

  356. the heavenly

  357. realms.

  358. I suppose,

  359. you know,

  360. the nearest

  361. way we can

  362. get to

  363. describing it

  364. is the

  365. concept of

  366. fallen angels,

  367. people who,

  368. beings that

  369. have fallen

  370. below what

  371. God expected

  372. of them.

  373. know your

  374. enemy.

  375. Our enemy

  376. is not

  377. human agency

  378. first rate,

  379. but it is.

  380. Evil can

  381. permeate

  382. human

  383. agencies.

  384. His tactics,

  385. very subtle.

  386. 2 Corinthians

  387. 11, 14,

  388. he masquerades

  389. as an angel

  390. of light.

  391. And in

  392. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  393. chapter 5

  394. and verse

  395. 8,

  396. this is why

  397. church history

  398. is constantly

  399. messy.

  400. Because

  401. those malign

  402. forces at

  403. work in

  404. our world

  405. are not

  406. going to

  407. give up

  408. easily.

  409. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  410. chapter 5

  411. and verse

  412. 8,

  413. Peter says

  414. to the

  415. Christians

  416. that,

  417. be self-controlled

  418. and alert.

  419. your enemy

  420. the devil

  421. prowls around

  422. like a

  423. roaring lion

  424. seeking

  425. whom he

  426. may devour.

  427. Now I

  428. want to say

  429. to you

  430. something that

  431. I hope will

  432. be liberating

  433. for most

  434. of you.

  435. If you

  436. are,

  437. as Paul

  438. would put it,

  439. in Christ,

  440. if you

  441. are a

  442. believing

  443. Christians,

  444. if you

  445. accept what

  446. Jesus did

  447. on the

  448. cross of

  449. Calvary

  450. for you

  451. in grace,

  452. that your

  453. sins are

  454. forgiven

  455. and that

  456. God has

  457. gifted you

  458. the promise

  459. of eternity,

  460. I want to

  461. say to you

  462. that you

  463. can never

  464. be possessed

  465. by the

  466. devil.

  467. I have

  468. in my

  469. pastoral

  470. ministry

  471. come across

  472. Christians

  473. who think

  474. they might

  475. be possessed

  476. of the

  477. devil.

  478. And it's

  479. interesting,

  480. isn't there

  481. two bits

  482. of advice

  483. here for

  484. Christians

  485. that Peter

  486. is writing

  487. to.

  488. He doesn't

  489. just say

  490. be alert,

  491. he says

  492. be self

  493. controlled

  494. and alert.

  495. Sometimes

  496. some of

  497. the

  498. Christians

  499. I've met

  500. who think

  501. they might

  502. be possessed

  503. by the

  504. devil have

  505. lost all

  506. sense of

  507. self

  508. control.

  509. They're

  510. doing stuff

  511. they really

  512. know they

  513. shouldn't

  514. be doing

  515. and they

  516. continue to

  517. do it.

  518. I don't

  519. believe even

  520. their salvation

  521. is up for

  522. grabs.

  523. So these

  524. malign forces

  525. are constantly

  526. on the

  527. prowl.

  528. like a

  529. roaring

  530. lion.

  531. Some years

  532. ago now

  533. Anthony and

  534. I were

  535. on a

  536. game

  537. hunt in

  538. Uganda

  539. and

  540. we came

  541. across these

  542. lions and

  543. they seemed

  544. so playful.

  545. You know

  546. they were

  547. just a few

  548. yards away

  549. from the

  550. Land Rover

  551. where we

  552. were hiding

  553. and they

  554. were just

  555. plain

  556. naturally

  557. rolling over

  558. he almost

  559. wanted to

  560. get out

  561. to the

  562. Land Rover

  563. and tickle

  564. their tummies

  565. like you

  566. might with

  567. your domestic

  568. cat.

  569. The guy

  570. that took

  571. us said

  572. that wouldn't

  573. be advisable.

  574. Then suddenly

  575. one of them

  576. let out this

  577. most blood

  578. curdling

  579. roar.

  580. I'm a bit

  581. into

  582. tell you

  583. I'm very

  584. sensitive to

  585. noise

  586. and it was

  587. so loud

  588. and so

  589. scary

  590. I almost

  591. wanted to

  592. tell the

  593. guy

  594. right

  595. start the

  596. engine

  597. let's go.

  598. So

  599. this is

  600. reality

  601. reality

  602. you know

  603. the devil

  604. prowls

  605. around

  606. seeking

  607. whom he

  608. may

  609. divide

  610. if you

  611. are in

  612. Christ

  613. you don't

  614. have to

  615. worry

  616. about the

  617. devil

  618. possessing

  619. you

  620. but I

  621. do believe

  622. that these

  623. malign forces

  624. and the

  625. captain of

  626. their team

  627. the devil

  628. can't

  629. possess

  630. you

  631. but they

  632. can influence

  633. you

  634. and we

  635. see

  636. Christians

  637. all the

  638. time

  639. I mean

  640. I

  641. you know

  642. I want

  643. to go

  644. on about

  645. this

  646. but we

  647. have seen

  648. in the

  649. last 12

  650. months

  651. some

  652. amazing

  653. church

  654. leaders

  655. dragged

  656. into

  657. terrible

  658. sexual

  659. scandals

  660. goodness

  661. knows

  662. what

  663. people

  664. who seem

  665. rock solid

  666. to us

  667. you know

  668. suddenly

  669. undermined

  670. by their

  671. shocking

  672. behaviour

  673. I suppose

  674. the one

  675. that

  676. you know

  677. really

  678. kind of

  679. sticks in

  680. mind

  681. is

  682. the

  683. Ewan

  684. minister

  685. camp

  686. and this

  687. man

  688. John

  689. Smythe

  690. who

  691. apparently

  692. evangelical

  693. Bible

  694. believing

  695. Christian

  696. taught

  697. the

  698. Bible

  699. took

  700. pleasure

  701. in

  702. beating

  703. boys

  704. with a

  705. cane

  706. don't

  707. tell me

  708. that we

  709. Christians

  710. can't be

  711. influenced

  712. by it

  713. so

  714. what

  715. 1 Peter

  716. 5

  717. 8

  718. tells

  719. us

  720. is

  721. that

  722. this

  723. malign

  724. influence

  725. is

  726. persistent

  727. that's

  728. why

  729. Paul

  730. says

  731. you know

  732. we need

  733. to be

  734. strong

  735. in the

  736. Lord

  737. and in

  738. his

  739. great

  740. power

  741. leave it

  742. to my

  743. great

  744. power

  745. we're

  746. all in

  747. trouble

  748. leave it

  749. to his

  750. great

  751. power

  752. and there

  753. is

  754. hope

  755. for us

  756. and

  757. Paul's

  758. advice

  759. is

  760. very

  761. simple

  762. in a

  763. way

  764. it is

  765. put on

  766. the

  767. full

  768. armour

  769. of

  770. God

  771. obviously

  772. it's

  773. an

  774. analogy

  775. in

  776. Paul's

  777. mind

  778. and

  779. one

  780. of the

  781. things

  782. about

  783. the

  784. well

  785. three

  786. things

  787. about

  788. the

  789. full

  790. armour

  791. of

  792. God

  793. is

  794. one

  795. it

  796. prepares

  797. us

  798. for

  799. this

  800. battle

  801. two

  802. it

  803. protects

  804. us

  805. from

  806. attack

  807. and

  808. thirdly

  809. the

  810. main

  811. outcome

  812. of this

  813. putting

  814. on

  815. this

  816. armour

  817. is

  818. that

  819. it

  820. helps

  821. us

  822. stand

  823. our

  824. ground

  825. and

  826. so

  827. just

  828. to run

  829. through

  830. what

  831. the

  832. armour

  833. is

  834. constituted

  835. of

  836. the

  837. belt

  838. of

  839. truth

  840. the

  841. breastplate

  842. of

  843. righteousness

  844. in

  845. place

  846. says

  847. Paul

  848. the

  849. readiness

  850. that

  851. comes

  852. from

  853. the

  854. gospel

  855. of

  856. peace

  857. the

  858. shield

  859. of

  860. faith

  861. the

  862. helmet

  863. of

  864. salvation

  865. the

  866. sword

  867. of

  868. the

  869. spirit

  870. and

  871. consistent

  872. prayer

  873. in the

  874. spirit

  875. the

  876. belt

  877. of

  878. truth

  879. has

  880. truth

  881. been

  882. relativized

  883. in

  884. modern

  885. culture

  886. that

  887. is

  888. a

  889. question

  890. that

  891. is

  892. constantly

  893. in front

  894. of us

  895. these

  896. days

  897. in the

  898. media

  899. usually

  900. forms

  901. around

  902. people

  903. who

  904. are

  905. woke

  906. with

  907. what

  908. they

  909. call

  910. woke

  911. mentality

  912. and

  913. between

  914. people

  915. who

  916. think

  917. that

  918. woke

  919. mentality

  920. is a

  921. load

  922. of

  923. bunkum

  924. that

  925. needs

  926. to

  927. be

  928. avoided

  929. and

  930. oddly

  931. enough

  932. the

  933. idea

  934. of

  935. truth

  936. being

  937. relative

  938. has

  939. been

  940. around

  941. since

  942. the

  943. 5th

  944. century

  945. BC

  946. a

  947. Greek

  948. philosopher

  949. by the

  950. name

  951. of

  952. Protagoras

  953. who

  954. had a

  955. big

  956. influence

  957. on

  958. Plato

  959. Protagoras'

  960. idea

  961. is

  962. probably

  963. one of

  964. the

  965. most

  966. successful

  967. though

  968. ultimately

  969. wrong

  970. political

  971. theories

  972. of all

  973. time

  974. the

  975. kind

  976. of

  977. driving

  978. thought

  979. behind

  980. relativism

  981. is that

  982. different

  983. opinions

  984. can be

  985. equally

  986. true

  987. relative

  988. to

  989. different

  990. standards

  991. think

  992. about

  993. that

  994. for a

  995. moment

  996. that

  997. really

  998. means

  999. there

  1000. is

  1001. no

  1002. such

  1003. thing

  1004. as

  1005. statements

  1006. of

  1007. truth

  1008. that

  1009. can

  1010. be

  1011. removed

  1012. from

  1013. their

  1014. context

  1015. so

  1016. I

  1017. mean

  1018. first

  1019. up

  1020. I

  1021. mean

  1022. you

  1023. can't

  1024. rip

  1025. the

  1026. Ten

  1027. Commandments

  1028. up

  1029. because

  1030. they

  1031. arrived

  1032. in

  1033. stone

  1034. but

  1035. actually

  1036. if

  1037. you

  1038. start

  1039. to

  1040. take

  1041. the

  1042. Ten

  1043. Commandments

  1044. and

  1045. you

  1046. say

  1047. thou

  1048. shalt

  1049. not

  1050. kill

  1051. and

  1052. you

  1053. say

  1054. yes

  1055. but

  1056. in

  1057. certain

  1058. circumstances

  1059. you

  1060. really

  1061. need

  1062. to

  1063. kill

  1064. the

  1065. problem

  1066. with

  1067. relativism

  1068. is

  1069. that

  1070. there

  1071. is

  1072. an

  1073. element

  1074. of

  1075. truth

  1076. about

  1077. it

  1078. but

  1079. once

  1080. it

  1081. undermines

  1082. the

  1083. idea

  1084. that

  1085. there

  1086. is

  1087. anything

  1088. that

  1089. might

  1090. be

  1091. called

  1092. absolute

  1093. truth

  1094. you

  1095. end

  1096. up

  1097. I

  1098. think

  1099. with

  1100. a

  1101. house

  1102. built

  1103. on

  1104. sand

  1105. so

  1106. what

  1107. does

  1108. it

  1109. mean

  1110. to

  1111. put

  1112. on

  1113. the

  1114. belt

  1115. of

  1116. truth

  1117. I

  1118. love

  1119. these

  1120. speakers

  1121. who

  1122. come

  1123. up

  1124. with

  1125. clever

  1126. ways

  1127. of

  1128. structuring

  1129. their

  1130. sermons

  1131. this

  1132. has

  1133. nothing

  1134. to do

  1135. with

  1136. what

  1137. we're

  1138. talking

  1139. about

  1140. tonight

  1141. but

  1142. I

  1143. once

  1144. heard

  1145. Sal

  1146. when

  1147. you

  1148. speak

  1149. and

  1150. he

  1151. was

  1152. talking

  1153. about

  1154. Samson

  1155. and

  1156. his

  1157. three

  1158. points

  1159. were

  1160. prayerless

  1161. careless

  1162. and

  1163. hairless

  1164. and

  1165. I

  1166. heard

  1167. another

  1168. preacher

  1169. say

  1170. trouble

  1171. is

  1172. if

  1173. you've

  1174. not

  1175. got

  1176. the

  1177. belt

  1178. of

  1179. truth

  1180. on

  1181. you're

  1182. going

  1183. to

  1184. end

  1185. up

  1186. with

  1187. your

  1188. trousers

  1189. around

  1190. your

  1191. ankles

  1192. I

  1193. didn't

  1194. like

  1195. to

  1196. think

  1197. about

  1198. that

  1199. for

  1200. too

  1201. long

  1202. but

  1203. he

  1204. did

  1205. say

  1206. that

  1207. truth

  1208. is

  1209. really

  1210. important

  1211. I

  1212. mean

  1213. !

  1214. Christians

  1215. not

  1216. so much

  1217. these

  1218. days

  1219. may

  1220. be

  1221. but

  1222. traditionally

  1223. I

  1224. don't

  1225. think

  1226. this

  1227. is

  1228. a

  1229. bad

  1230. thing

  1231. as a

  1232. matter

  1233. of

  1234. fact

  1235. I

  1236. mean

  1237. in

  1238. lots

  1239. of

  1240. churches

  1241. these

  1242. days

  1243. the

  1244. last

  1245. thing

  1246. you'll

  1247. ever

  1248. hear

  1249. is

  1250. a

  1251. creed

  1252. I

  1253. think

  1254. to

  1255. myself

  1256. actually

  1257. it's

  1258. good

  1259. for

  1260. us

  1261. to

  1262. recite

  1263. together

  1264. the

  1265. things

  1266. we

  1267. think

  1268. are

  1269. non

  1270. negotiable

  1271. I

  1272. mean

  1273. I

  1274. think

  1275. there

  1276. are

  1277. other

  1278. non

  1279. negotiables

  1280. that

  1281. are

  1282. not

  1283. mentioned

  1284. in

  1285. the

  1286. creed

  1287. the

  1288. it

  1289. that's

  1290. just a

  1291. ranting

  1292. of an

  1293. old

  1294. buffer

  1295. but look

  1296. truth

  1297. is

  1298. important

  1299. and I

  1300. was telling

  1301. somebody

  1302. this

  1303. morning

  1304. I

  1305. had

  1306. this

  1307. I

  1308. was

  1309. for a

  1310. while

  1311. I

  1312. mean

  1313. don't

  1314. laugh

  1315. I

  1316. was

  1317. for a

  1318. while

  1319. a hospice chaplain.

  1320. And one day,

1321. the people who ran this hospice

  1322. said to me,

1323. would I go and visit this family?

1324. And the man had very bad stage four brain cancer.

  1325. And I said,

1326. so, you know, what's the issue with him?

  1327. So they said, well,

  1328. the family keep pretending

1329. he's going to get better.

  1330. And they've made us,

  1331. the medical profession,

  1332. caring for him,

1333. swear that we won't tell him the truth,

1334. that actually his days on planet Earth are numbered.

1335. So I went and I met with the family

  1336. and they said,

1337. don't judge us harshly for this.

1338. You know, we know old Harry.

  1339. It wasn't his name,

1340. but I'll call him Harry.

  1341. We know old Harry.

  1342. If he told,

1343. he'd just be fall apart in pieces.

  1344. So I said, well,

1345. your moral basis for telling him a lie is what?

  1346. They said, well,

  1347. it's a white lie.

1348. I don't think there is such a thing as a white lie.

1349. I think there are a few grey lies,

1350. but maybe not so many white lies.

1351. So I said to them,

  1352. look,

1353. if he talks to me about it,

  1354. I'm a minister.

1355. I'm not going to tell him a lie.

  1356. So we're talking together

  1357. and he said,

1358. when I get out of here,

  1359. I said,

1360. you think you're going to get out of here?

  1361. He said, don't you?

  1362. I said,

1363. I'm not so sure about that,

  1364. Harry.

  1365. You know,

  1366. you've got stage four

1367. and they've stopped treating you.

  1368. His family

  1369. phoned me up

  1370. a week later

1371. and they said to me,

1372. Harry seems a lot better in himself.

  1373. I said,

1374. what did you say to him?

  1375. I said,

  1376. it's very simple.

  1377. What was it?

  1378. They almost thought

1379. somebody changed his drug regime.

  1380. What did you do?

  1381. I said,

1382. I told him the truth.

1383. And the truth set him free

  1384. from anxiety.

  1385. And I remember

1386. praying a prayer of commitment with him

  1387. at his bedside.

1388. And all it left me with

  1389. in all of that

1390. was just this thinking that

  1391. do we persuade ourselves

1392. that white lies are acceptable?

  1393. You know,

  1394. I mean,

  1395. we,

  1396. you know,

1397. we didn't do anything about this.

  1398. But for instance,

  1399. I kind of felt

  1400. a bit nervous

  1401. about

  1402. promoting the white lie

  1403. of Father Christmas.

  1404. You know,

  1405. I was engaged

1406. with one of my grandchildren

  1407. who,

  1408. they said,

  1409. in this place

1410. we've just been staying with them

  1411. for the week,

1412. there was a wood burner

  1413. and it's a very thin chimney

  1414. goes up

  1415. and the first question

  1416. what my grandson said

  1417. is,

  1418. how did Father Christmas

  1419. get down there?

  1420. And,

  1421. you know,

  1422. I didn't say to him,

  1423. you idiot,

1424. there is no such thing,

  1425. you know,

  1426. grow up.

  1427. And he said,

  1428. oh,

  1429. I think he probably

  1430. parks up outside

  1431. or something,

  1432. you know,

  1433. obviously he can't

  1434. get down there.

  1435. And,

  1436. he seemed satisfied

  1437. with that explanation

  1438. and so,

  1439. you know,

  1440. we left it there.

  1441. But,

  1442. you know,

  1443. I have an uneasiness

  1444. about that.

  1445. And the problem is,

1446. if the message of Christmas

  1447. is about the birth

  1448. of Jesus Christ,

  1449. and that is true,

  1450. and the message

  1451. of Father Christmas

  1452. isn't true,

  1453. how are kids

  1454. going to work out

  1455. the difference

1456. between what I can know

  1457. is truth

  1458. and what is just,

  1459. you know,

  1460. I mean,

  1461. don't get me wrong,

  1462. you know,

  1463. I'm not,

  1464. you know,

  1465. I'm not Oliver Cromwell

  1466. and the Puritans

  1467. are,

  1468. you know,

  1469. dressed up in

  1470. modern clothes,

  1471. well,

  1472. not that modern clothes,

  1473. but,

  1474. you know,

1475. I kind of get it

  1476. in one way,

  1477. but I do feel

  1478. uncomfortable with it

  1479. in another way.

  1480. I hope that's not

  1481. too weird.

1482. But the belt of truth

  1483. is,

  1484. it's not just about

  1485. the issue of truth,

  1486. though it is about

  1487. the issue of truth,

  1488. but it's about

  1489. living the truth.

  1490. speaking the truth,

  1491. avoiding falsehood,

  1492. gossip,

  1493. and slander.

  1494. I think some of

  1495. the worst gossipy

  1496. stuff I hear

  1497. is in churches.

  1498. Living in integrity,

  1499. aligning our actions

  1500. with words,

  1501. that's Paul's

  1502. consistent message.

  1503. If you believe this,

  1504. this is the ramifications

  1505. for the way

  1506. you should behave.

  1507. Pursuing righteousness,

  1508. seeking justice,

  1509. honesty,

  1510. and fairness.

  1511. It seems reasonable

  1512. to me

  1513. to be expected

  1514. of a Christian.

  1515. And,

  1516. discerning deception.

  1517. That is,

  1518. recognizing

  1519. and rejecting

  1520. false teaching

  1521. and temptations.

  1522. Friends,

1523. you need to buckle up

1524. with the belt of truth

  1525. in this fight

  1526. against these

  1527. malign influences.

  1528. on the second,

  1529. the breastplate

  1530. of righteousness.

  1531. What's a breastplate

  1532. designed for?

  1533. Well,

  1534. as it tells you

  1535. in all the books

  1536. about breastplates,

  1537. it says it's designed

1538. to protect your vital organs.

  1539. I mean,

1540. I can think of one,

  1541. I don't think it does

  1542. protect too well,

  1543. but anyway,

  1544. you won't go there.

1545. But what is a breastplate?

  1546. It's designed

  1547. to protect

  1548. your vital organs.

  1549. And the breastplate

  1550. of righteousness

  1551. is the way

  1552. that you live

  1553. your lives

  1554. because righteous lives

  1555. turn back the enemy.

  1556. Nothing the devil

  1557. hates more

  1558. than people

  1559. who claim

  1560. the righteousness

  1561. of Jesus

  1562. in their lives.

  1563. righteousness.

1564. And we have to remember

  1565. that wearing

  1566. this breastplate

  1567. reminds us,

  1568. I mean,

  1569. I think Paul

  1570. in other parts

  1571. of the scripture

  1572. talks about

  1573. what he calls

  1574. sanctification.

  1575. That is being

  1576. transformed

  1577. in holiness.

  1578. In 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  1579. chapter 4

  1580. and verse 1,

1581. just let me give you

  1582. a flavour of this,

  1583. just so you know

  1584. this isn't my idea,

  1585. it's Paul's writing.

  1586. And

  1587. in chapter 4

  1588. verses 3 through 8

  1589. he says

  1590. this

  1591. Sorry,

1592. I'm just about to read

  1593. 1 Timothy to you.

  1594. Hang on,

  1595. give me a minute.

  1596. Okay,

  1597. here we go.

  1598. Anybody else

  1599. have this problem?

  1600. The older I get,

1601. the harder I find it

  1602. to split pages.

  1603. Is that just me?

  1604. Come on,

  1605. own up.

  1606. So,

  1607. Paul says this,

  1608. it's God's will

  1609. that you should be

  1610. holy,

  1611. that you should

  1612. avoid sexual immorality,

  1613. that each of you

  1614. should learn

  1615. to control

  1616. his own body

  1617. in a way

  1618. that is holy

  1619. and honourable,

  1620. not in passionate

  1621. lusts like the heathen

1622. who do not know God.

  1623. In verse 8

  1624. he says,

  1625. therefore,

  1626. he who rejects

  1627. this instruction

  1628. does not reject man

  1629. but God

  1630. who gives you

  1631. his Holy Spirit.

  1632. You sit there

  1633. and you think,

  1634. oh my goodness,

  1635. sanctification,

  1636. you know,

1637. how am I doing with that?

1638. What's my progress on that?

  1639. And the answer is,

  1640. thank God

  1641. you're not left alone

  1642. to battle with this

  1643. because God

  1644. has given you

  1645. the Holy Spirit

  1646. who will convict you

  1647. of sin

  1648. and show you

  1649. what is right

  1650. from wrong

  1651. and give you

  1652. the strength

  1653. to withhold

  1654. temptation.

  1655. So,

  1656. we go on

  1657. to the,

  1658. sorry,

  1659. I can't split

  1660. my notes up here.

  1661. Okay.

  1662. Put this down.

  1663. Talk amongst yourselves.

  1664. Paul talks about

  1665. wearing,

1666. somebody put it like this,

  1667. choose sensible shoes.

  1668. And,

  1669. one of the things

  1670. about shoes is,

  1671. you know,

  1672. to say,

  1673. we wear

  1674. different kinds of shoes

  1675. for different jobs,

  1676. don't we?

  1677. So,

  1678. you know,

  1679. you don't go,

  1680. I imagine you don't go

  1681. running in six-inch

  1682. high heels.

  1683. You don't go

  1684. and work

  1685. in a factory

  1686. where there are

  1687. heavy weights

  1688. being shifted around

  1689. in open-toed

  1690. sandals.

  1691. No,

  1692. we choose the right

  1693. shoes for the right

  1694. job.

  1695. And Paul says

  1696. in

  1697. Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1698. that

  1699. the shoes

  1700. that we should

  1701. be wearing

  1702. in the light

  1703. of the spiritual

  1704. warfare

  1705. are the shoes

  1706. that are fitted

  1707. with the readiness

  1708. that comes

  1709. from the gospel

  1710. of peace.

  1711. And Paul tells us

  1712. what the gospel

  1713. of peace is

  1714. in Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1715. and verse 14.

  1716. It means primarily

  1717. peace with God.

  1718. God

  1719. and the gospel

  1720. is a way

  1721. that rebellious

  1722. sinners

  1723. can find peace

  1724. with God.

  1725. And again,

  1726. I would say

  1727. the proclamation

  1728. of the gospel

  1729. is what the devil

  1730. hates.

  1731. One of the

  1732. not so wily

  1733. tricks of the

  1734. evil one is

  1735. that if you

  1736. read through

  1737. scripture

  1738. you will see

  1739. that so often

  1740. God sorts

  1741. out

  1742. key people

  1743. in God's

  1744. purposes

  1745. for special

  1746. treatment.

  1747. You see that

  1748. in the life

  1749. of Elisha

  1750. in the Old

  1751. Testament,

  1752. Elijah,

  1753. all these

  1754. people.

  1755. And you can

  1756. see it in the

  1757. New Testament.

  1758. When Paul is

  1759. talking about

  1760. his qualifications

  1761. for his role

  1762. in churches

  1763. which doubt

  1764. his

  1765. apostleship,

  1766. he doesn't

  1767. say,

  1768. I went to

  1769. the University

  1770. of Antioch

  1771. and took

  1772. a double

  1773. first in

  1774. theology.

  1775. No, he

  1776. goes on about

  1777. I've been

  1778. beaten with

  1779. rods,

  1780. I've been

  1781. shipwrecked,

  1782. I've been

  1783. just this

  1784. whole kind

  1785. of chapter

  1786. of the

  1787. sufferings

  1788. that he's

  1789. gone through.

  1790. And so

  1791. in relation

  1792. to that,

  1793. the gospel

  1794. I think

  1795. being preached

  1796. turns back

  1797. the malign

  1798. influences

  1799. of

  1800. these

  1801. forces

  1802. of

  1803. evil

  1804. that

  1805. Paul

  1806. writes

  1807. about.

  1808. I

  1809. love the

  1810. idea of

  1811. that,

  1812. but then I

  1813. suppose I

  1814. would,

  1815. but I do

  1816. love the

  1817. idea of

  1818. that.

  1819. And that's

  1820. why

  1821. preaching the

  1822. gospel of

  1823. Jesus Christ

  1824. is so

  1825. critical.

  1826. You know,

  1827. if you go

  1828. to a church

  1829. and the

  1830. gospel is

  1831. purely to

  1832. do with

  1833. social action

  1834. or purely

  1835. to do with

  1836. the fight

  1837. for justice,

  1838. these are

  1839. good things,

  1840. these are

  1841. concomitants

  1842. of the

  1843. gospel,

  1844. but they're

  1845. not the

  1846. gospel.

  1847. The gospel

  1848. is about

  1849. Jesus' death

  1850. on the

  1851. cross of

  1852. Calvary,

  1853. what we're

  1854. going to

  1855. talk about

  1856. remember

  1857. on Good

  1858. Friday.

  1859. Paul then

  1860. says you've

  1861. got to

  1862. take up

  1863. the shield

  1864. of faith.

  1865. And so

  1866. the Roman

  1867. army had

  1868. a shield

  1869. which is

  1870. called a

  1871. scutum.

  1872. And a

  1873. scutum was

  1874. as large

  1875. as a

  1876. door.

  1877. You've

  1878. probably

  1879. seen

  1880. pictures

  1881. of

  1882. riot

  1883. police

  1884. today.

  1885. And you

  1886. know they

  1887. have those

  1888. big

  1889. shields.

  1890. And those

  1891. shields have

  1892. two primary

  1893. functions.

  1894. One is

  1895. they protect

  1896. the body,

  1897. the whole

  1898. body.

  1899. And secondly

  1900. they can be

  1901. used

  1902. offensively

  1903. to push

  1904. back the

  1905. enemy.

  1906. That's the

  1907. way riot

  1908. police

  1909. primarily

  1910. use them.

  1911. And again

  1912. one of the

  1913. things the

  1914. devil hates

  1915. is people

  1916. who are

  1917. faithful.

  1918. You know

  1919. if you

  1920. think about

  1921. that of

  1922. course he

  1923. would hate

  1924. that.

  1925. He would

  1926. hate people

  1927. who

  1928. recklessly

  1929. trust God

  1930. even when

  1931. the circumstances

  1932. might dictate

  1933. that that would

  1934. be the last

  1935. thing you

  1936. would think

  1937. of doing.

  1938. The devil

  1939. hates that.

  1940. And he'll

  1941. do what he

  1942. can to

  1943. undermine

  1944. him.

  1945. we go

  1946. on to

  1947. the

  1948. helmet

  1949. of salvation

  1950. and the

  1951. sword of

  1952. the spirit.

  1953. And the

  1954. helmet of

  1955. salvation

  1956. is the

  1957. closest bit

  1958. of protection

  1959. that's near

  1960. your head,

  1961. the seat

  1962. of your

  1963. learning.

  1964. And we

  1965. need to be

  1966. clear in our

  1967. minds that

  1968. we are in

  1969. Christ,

  1970. that we are

  1971. saved by

  1972. grace,

  1973. not by

  1974. our

  1975. effort.

  1976. Save for

  1977. good works,

  1978. not by

  1979. good works.

  1980. A big

  1981. message in

  1982. Ephesians.

  1983. And we

  1984. need to be

  1985. clear as

  1986. well, and

  1987. this is so

  1988. important in

  1989. our society

  1990. today,

  1991. dominated by

  1992. mass marketing

  1993. and dominated

  1994. by social

  1995. media.

  1996. We do

  1997. need to

  1998. exercise some

  1999. caution around

  2000. the idea that

  2001. what we input

  2002. into our

  2003. minds will

  2004. affect the

  2005. outcomes in

  2006. our behaviour.

  2007. I don't

  2008. know how

  2009. to advise

  2010. you on

  2011. this other

  2012. than limit

  2013. your exposure.

  2014. Some of

  2015. you know I

  2016. like sport a

  2017. lot, I

  2018. listen to

  2019. talk sport,

  2020. but one

  2021. of the

  2022. things that

  2023. horrifies me,

  2024. and I've

  2025. phoned in

  2026. about it and

  2027. I've written

  2028. a letter

  2029. about it,

  2030. is every

  2031. advertisement on

  2032. talk sport,

  2033. is for

  2034. online gambling.

  2035. Big, big

  2036. issue.

  2037. I was

  2038. talking to a

  2039. lady in

  2040. one of the

  2041. shops today

  2042. just down

  2043. there and

  2044. I was

  2045. saying to

  2046. her, I

  2047. thought it's

  2048. a big

  2049. problem,

  2050. she's like,

  2051. you're telling

  2052. me.

  2053. I said,

  2054. why, do you

  2055. gamble?

  2056. She said,

  2057. no, no, no,

  2058. but I know

  2059. someone who

  2060. does.

  2061. Take a wild

  2062. guess as to

  2063. who that

  2064. might be.

  2065. And so

  2066. what we

  2067. put into

  2068. our minds

  2069. will affect

  2070. the outcomes

  2071. in our

  2072. behaviour.

  2073. We'd all

  2074. like to

  2075. think that

  2076. we are,

  2077. you know,

  2078. can be,

  2079. you know,

  2080. you're not,

  2081. we all think

  2082. we're not

  2083. influenced by

  2084. mass marketing,

  2085. but we

  2086. are.

  2087. Why would

  2088. commercial

  2089. enterprises

  2090. spend millions

  2091. of pounds

  2092. on mass

  2093. marketing if

  2094. it didn't

  2095. have any

  2096. impact?

  2097. I guarantee

  2098. that, you

  2099. don't have to

  2100. shout this

  2101. out, but

  2102. there'll be

  2103. people here

  2104. who've

  2105. watched this

  2106. stuff, and

  2107. you can't

  2108. avoid it,

  2109. to be honest,

  2110. who've

  2111. watched this

  2112. stuff and

  2113. moderated

  2114. their behaviour

  2115. in a certain

  2116. area by

  2117. what you've

  2118. heard.

  2119. I mean,

  2120. you, you

  2121. know, you'd

  2122. think we're

  2123. all mad not

  2124. to go on

  2125. cruises.

  2126. You know,

  2127. they're so

  2128. wonderful and

  2129. so inclusive

  2130. and all

  2131. that stuff.

  2132. Somebody I

  2133. know went

  2134. on their

  2135. first cruise

  2136. last week

  2137. and said

  2138. never again.

  2139. It's just

  2140. one long

  2141. drunken,

  2142. you know,

  2143. festival on

  2144. board this

  2145. ship that

  2146. was cruising

  2147. around the

  2148. Canary Islands.

  2149. And the

  2150. best offensive

  2151. weapon in

  2152. the light of

  2153. all this is

  2154. the Word of

  2155. God.

  2156. Do you

  2157. remember

  2158. Jesus in

  2159. the temptation

  2160. narratives in

  2161. the three

  2162. synoptic

  2163. gospels?

  2164. every temptation

  2165. that the

  2166. devil put

  2167. before Jesus,

  2168. Jesus turned

  2169. back with

  2170. scripture.

  2171. And finally,

  2172. Paul says,

  2173. pray at all

  2174. times in the

  2175. spirit.

  2176. Why?

  2177. Because the

  2178. devil hates

  2179. faithful and

  2180. authoritative

  2181. prayer.

  2182. Any kind of

  2183. prayer,

  2184. intercessions,

  2185. which incidentally,

  2186. not just praying

  2187. for what I want

  2188. in every situation.

  2189. I think when

  2190. you grow up in

  2191. Christ,

  2192. you learn that

  2193. interceding means

  2194. you want to pray

  2195. for what God

  2196. wants in any

  2197. and every

  2198. situation.

  2199. Praising God,

  2200. really important

  2201. and good thing,

  2202. it can lift your

  2203. spirits when you're

  2204. feeling low.

  2205. Confession and

  2206. repentance.

  2207. And Paul says,

  2208. do this at all

  2209. times.

  2210. And you think to

  2211. yourself, I can't

  2212. do that.

  2213. you know, I've

  2214. got stuff to do,

  2215. I can't, well, I

  2216. think it's a kind

  2217. of, it's a way of

  2218. life that you can

  2219. foster.

  2220. And I still get

  2221. caught out by it,

  2222. I still get caught

  2223. out by, sometimes,

  2224. you know, I face a

  2225. situation and

  2226. because, you know,

  2227. I've always been a

  2228. leader, I guess,

  2229. I'm trying to fix

  2230. it in my own

  2231. strength.

  2232. Trying to come up

  2233. with a strategy

  2234. they'll get around

  2235. it.

  2236. And the last

  2237. thing, somebody

  2238. will say to me,

  2239. well, don't you

  2240. want to pray about

  2241. this, Mike?

  2242. I'm like, oh,

  2243. yeah.

  2244. Good thought.

  2245. Why don't we?

  2246. So, friends, there

2247. we are, and I love

  2248. the end of it,

  2249. where Paul humbly

  2250. asks for prayers

  2251. for himself, that

  2252. he might preach

  2253. the gospel, and he

  2254. uses a kind of

  2255. personal imperative

  2256. there and says,

  2257. which I should.

  2258. And if there's a

  2259. should that a

  2260. applies to the

  2261. church in the

  2262. western world in

  2263. the 20th century,

  2264. it should be

  2265. preaching the

  2266. gospel.

  2267. Not shouting it,

  2268. preaching it,

  2269. arguing for,

  2270. giving a reason for

  2271. the hope that's

  2272. within us.

  2273. So, friends, that's

  2274. it, six weeks

  2275. together, and it's

  2276. been great to be

  2277. with you, and I've

2278. loved it, and I just

2279. want to say a few

  2280. closing comments

  2281. before we pray.

  2282. last year, when we

  2283. talked about the

  2284. seven churches in the

  2285. book of Revelation, I

  2286. said that I was

  2287. wondering whether there

2288. would be any of you

2289. who might like to go

  2290. in a pilgrimage and

  2291. go to those seven

  2292. churches.

  2293. And I didn't do

  2294. anything about it,

  2295. partly because I

2296. forgot to ask you to

  2297. leave your email

2298. addresses, so I had no

  2299. way of getting hold

  2300. of you.

  2301. But I did think

  2302. about that

  2303. pilgrimage, and I

  2304. thought about you,

2305. and I've done it, and

  2306. I thought to myself,

  2307. there's quite a lot

  2308. of, you know, days

  2309. when you're just on a

  2310. coach for hours.

  2311. And I remember, I

  2312. think it was the

  2313. church in Smyrna, and

  2314. we just coached for

  2315. five hours.

  2316. And when we got

  2317. there, it turns out

  2318. that the only thing

  2319. that's left of the

2320. church in Smyrna is a

  2321. copper plate on the

  2322. side of a multi-story

  2323. car park.

  2324. And we're like, you

  2325. know, that's a bit

  2326. disappointing.

  2327. But there are some

  2328. fun things that we

2329. could do by way of a

  2330. pilgrimage.

2331. And I would love to

  2332. take a group of

  2333. Christians from across

  2334. the churches together.

  2335. I mean, that's where

2336. you really get to know

  2337. one another.

2338. You have a lot of

  2339. fun, some learning,

  2340. some worship, some

  2341. time together in that

  2342. way.

2343. And so if I come up

  2344. with a plan, and I,

  2345. if I've got your

  2346. email addresses, all I

2347. will do is send you

  2348. the plan.

2349. It's up to you then.

2350. I've said if you want

  2351. the Bible school to

  2352. continue, just put a

  2353. tick next to your

  2354. email address.

2355. I hope you found it

  2356. to be of some

  2357. benefit.

  2358. I hope it's

  2359. stimulated to think.

  2360. But I hope, too,

  2361. there's been a bit of

  2362. food for your soul.

  2363. And in these days

2364. when some of us are

  2365. thinking the future

  2366. looks a little

  2367. uncertain, understatement

2368. of the year, I hope

  2369. that in these sessions

  2370. you might find some

  2371. hope.

2372. Not in me, but in the

  2373. Lord Jesus Christ.

2374. And as Paul said, you

2375. know, he wrote to the

  2376. saints in Ephesus, and

  2377. his final words was

  2378. grace and peace.

  2379. Sorry, his opening

  2380. words were grace and

  2381. peace from God our

  2382. Father and the Lord

  2383. Jesus Christ.

  2384. Well, friends, grace and

  2385. peace to you.
