  1. All throughout last week there was a lot of speculation as to who the Vatican would nominate as the new Pope.

  2. !

  3. Back in 2005, shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II, somebody called Roger Cadenhead,

  4. registered domain space for Benedict.

  5. He didn't know that the new Pope was going to be called Benedict,

  6. but took a bit of a punt looking back at history, at popular names among Popes,

  7. and so he registered the website www.benedict16.com.

  8. Before the new Pope's name was even announced.

  9. He secured it before Rome even knew they needed it.

  10. See, domain space is quite lucrative.

  11. He wasn't the only one in on this.

  12. Somebody else had registered a very similar one, whereas he had registered Benedict 16.

  13. Somebody else had registered Pope Benedict 16.com and put that on eBay and it surpassed $16,000, believe it or not.

  14. But Cadenhead didn't want any money for this registered domain space.

  15. A Catholic himself, he was happy for the Vatican to have the name.

  16. He said this,

  17. I'm going to try and avoid angering over one billion Catholics and my grandmother.

  18. He did, however, ask for something else in return.

  19. In fact, he asked for three things and these are the three things that he asked for.

  20. Number one, a free stay at the Vatican Hotel.

  21. Number two, one of those hats.

  22. Number three, complete absolution, no questions asked for the third week of March 1987.

  23. Now, it was never publicly said what actually happened during the third week of March 1987

  24. and you can use your imagination.

  25. But I would hazard a guess that every single one of us has got a third week of March 1987

  26. somewhere lurking in our lives, whatever that was.

  27. A week, a day, a weekend, a month, a year, even a decade that we just wish hadn't happened.

  28. That we look back on and we cringe over.

  29. These things can haunt us.

  30. They can take a grip on us.

  31. They can take a grip on us.

  32. See, everybody is a combination of the good and the bad and the downright ugly.

  33. And if you spend a lot of time worrying, preoccupied over whatever your third week of March 1987 might have been,

  34. welcome to the club.

  35. No, welcome to the human race.

  36. Because every single human being on this planet has a combination of the good and the bad and the ugly.

  37. Bring on Peter.

  38. Bring on Peter.

  39. And that's what I love so much about Peter.

  40. And I want to suggest, whilst there are so many different things that we can draw on from his story,

  41. from the character of Simon Peter as he's presented to us in the Gospels,

  42. I want to suggest that what we have there is a combination of getting it spectacularly right and getting it spectacularly wrong.

  43. But Jesus still called him his disciple.

  44. And that's important.

  45. You see, even in this one scene, he stands out as the one who gets it right.

  46. When Jesus is saying, well, who do you say I am?

  47. And Peter puts his finger right on it there and then.

  48. You are the Messiah.

  49. And yet, almost in the same breath, he finds himself being rebuked by Jesus,

  50. because it becomes very clear that he has radically misunderstood what being the Messiah is about.

  51. And we'll come on to that in just one moment.

  52. The combination of the spectacularly right and the spectacularly wrong.

  53. He got it right so many times, and yet he also finds himself rebuking Jesus, being rebuked by Jesus.

  54. He eventually denies Jesus.

  55. And yet, Jesus still went on to call him the Rock.

  56. You see, God believes in you, even when you don't believe in him.

  57. Jesus knew the worst things, as well as the best things, about Peter.

  58. And it's okay.

  59. Jesus knows the very worst things about you and me.

  60. And it's okay.

  61. What I love about Peter is the way he just blurts it out.

  62. He hasn't got a filter.

  63. Which means sometimes what he blurts out on those finer moments,

  64. you're the Messiah.

  65. Yes.

  66. Comes completely unfiltered.

  67. But at other times, no, I don't know him.

  68. Unfiltered.

  69. Spectacularly right and spectacularly wrong.

  70. Jesus knows the very best and the worst about Jesus, about Peter.

  71. And it's okay.

  72. I think that lack of filter tends to apply in relationships,

  73. when we're closest, with the people that we're closest to.

  74. Those that we really love, those that we're really open with,

  75. those who probably do know the worst things about us.

  76. And it's okay.

  77. We tend to let the filter down.

  78. Just an illustration.

  79. Just imagine that there's two people in a car.

  80. That's a busy high street.

  81. And that car needs to be parallel parked.

  82. And it's a tight spot.

  83. And there's loads of traffic queuing up behind.

  84. And there's quite a lot of pressure on.

  85. And just imagine that the two people in that car,

  86. two people that have just met for the first time.

  87. Maybe they're just work colleagues and they're on their way to a meeting.

  88. And they haven't known each other very long.

  89. And all the conversation is pretty polite, surface level stuff.

  90. And one of them is trying to park this car.

  91. And the other relatively, well, basically a stranger,

  92. but a very new person in their life.

  93. They interact with one another as this car is in the process of being parked.

  94. The conversation couldn't be more polite.

  95. Oh, sorry.

  96. Just back a bit.

  97. Yeah, no.

  98. I think back a bit.

  99. Sorry about this.

  100. I'm not very good at parallel parking.

  101. It's all right.

  102. Neither am I.

  103. Honestly, I don't think I would be doing a very good job either.

  104. Just back a little.

  105. Oops.

  106. Oh, you nearly hit that thing.

  107. The car there.

  108. Don't worry.

  109. There's a bit of traffic behind me.

  110. Don't feel pressured.

  111. No.

  112. It's all right.

  113. That's right.

  114. Oh, thank you very much.

  115. Same situation.

  116. Stick a married couple in that same car.

  117. I know I don't need to say any more.

  118. The filter comes down with those that we're nearest to.

  119. And I think that's what we see going on with Peter in the way that he interacts with Jesus.

  120. Whatever Peter blurts out, when we see Jesus' response, it's really clear and it's consistent.

  121. Jesus knows the worst thing about him.

  122. And it's okay.

  123. He knows the worst thing about you.

  124. And it's okay.

  125. You know, I often think to myself that, you know, probably if you knew the worst things about me, you would not want me to be your minister.

  126. And if I knew the worst thing about you, I probably wouldn't want to be your minister.

  127. Well, that's not how it works.

  128. God does know the worst things about you and me.

  129. And it's okay.

  130. And it's okay.

  131. So how do we see this in more detail actually played out in the life of Peter?

  132. Well, let's zoom out for a moment

  133. and let's see where this part comes

  134. in Mark's telling of the story of Jesus.

  135. So Mark's Gospel is structured in a very, very clear way.

  136. 16 chapters, two halves, eight chapters each.

  137. And the first half is this kind of whistle-stop tour of ministry.

  138. It's not very reflective.

  139. It's just very fact-based.

  140. It's to the point and it moves very quickly.

  141. We've got a scene with teaching going on,

  142. with healing going on,

  143. with calling disciples going on,

  144. with healing, with teaching, with miracles,

  145. signs and wonders.

  146. It happens really, really fast-paced.

  147. That's the first eight chapters.

  148. The second eight chapters, the second half of that Gospel,

  149. is given over to the last week of Jesus' life,

  150. his journey to the cross.

  151. And landing right there in the middle is Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  152. where we have this story,

  153. this scene at Caesarea Philippi,

  154. where it brings it right into focus.

  155. With all this going on,

  156. who do you say I am?

  157. Who is this guy?

  158. Who is Jesus?

  159. What is he about?

  160. What's all this happening for?

  161. Why all of this ministry leading up to this halfway point?

  162. And why what is about to happen in the journey to the cross?

  163. It's all played out in this one scene.

  164. Who do you say I am?

  165. The prophet?

  166. John the Baptist?

  167. Elijah?

  168. No, you're the Messiah.

  169. Now the other fascinating thing that runs through the Gospels,

  170. and we find this in Mark's Gospel as well,

  171. is what is often referred to as the Messianic secret,

  172. which can seem a slightly bizarre thing

  173. when we first come across it.

  174. The Messianic secret.

  175. In other words,

  176. for all the proclamation about the signs,

  177. about the kingdom of God,

  178. about the stuff that Jesus is doing,

  179. Jesus seems to want to keep it secret.

  180. Where he says to somebody or other,

  181. and we see it in this very scene with Peter,

  182. he says,

  183. don't tell anybody about this.

  184. We see it on occasions when people are healed.

  185. Don't tell anybody about this.

  186. And here,

  187. Jesus is saying,

  188. the Messiah,

  189. don't tell anybody about this.

  190. Why?

  191. Well,

  192. we find that

  193. becomes clearer

  194. as Mark's Gospel unfolds

  195. in that second half.

  196. And it's focused in

  197. on this middle

  198. centrepiece

  199. in Mark's Gospel,

  200. because as soon

  201. as Peter has said,

  202. you're the Messiah,

  203. that's who you are,

  204. and then Jesus goes on to say,

  205. and he said,

  206. there's nobody about this,

  207. but he then just goes on

  208. to talk about how,

  209. as the Messiah,

  210. he has to go to the cross.

  211. He must suffer and die.

  212. In other words,

  213. he wants this kept secret

  214. unless it's properly understood.

  215. It can only be proclaimed

  216. when it's going to be proclaimed

  217. accurately and clearly

  218. as it is.

  219. If you're going to go off

  220. and preaching who Jesus is

  221. for the wrong reasons,

  222. then forget it.

  223. The only way you can understand

  224. who Jesus is

  225. is when you grasp

  226. that he has to go to the cross.

  227. The only way you can understand

  228. what being a follower of Jesus is

  229. authentically

  230. is when you understand

  231. that it's not an easy ride.

  232. That to follow Jesus

  233. means following him,

  234. yes,

  235. through those first eight chapters

  236. of the signs and wonders

  237. and all the big amazing stuff

  238. there is to happen,

  239. but also it doesn't stop there.

  240. If you're going to confess him

  241. as Messiah,

  242. you need to know

  243. that you're following him

  244. through the whole Gospel,

  245. all 16 chapters

  246. which lead to the cross.

  247. In other words,

  248. if you're going to be

  249. a follower of Jesus,

  250. if you're going to know

  251. that God knows

  252. all the very worst things

  253. about you

  254. and it's okay,

  255. great,

  256. but that's not just

  257. some nice,

  258. sparkly,

  259. fluffy,

  260. clean,

  261. fluffy,

  262. wrapped message

  263. that just,

  264. just to massage your ego

  265. and to make you feel

  266. good about yourself.

  267. It's a message

  268. that says,

  269. yes,

  270. he loves you

  271. and accepts you

  272. unconditionally,

  273. but when you start

  274. to accept that

  275. and follow him,

  276. it's not going to be

  277. an easy ride.

  278. Following Jesus

  279. is not just

  280. about having

  281. a positive self-image.

  282. Now you believe in God.

  283. It is that,

  284. but it's so much more.

  285. And Mark's Gospel

  286. tells us in no uncertain terms

  287. what that is.

  288. That the discipleship

  289. is costly.

  290. It involves

  291. taking up your cross.

  292. It involves

  293. rolling up your sleeves.

  294. It involves

  295. taking risks.

  296. It involves

  297. life that will be difficult.

  298. Because as Bonhoeffer

  299. famously said,

  300. God's grace

  301. is free,

  302. but it's never cheap.

  303. If you're going to know

  304. the unconditional love

  305. of Jesus,

  306. you need to know

  307. that it's costly stuff.

  308. He will call you

  309. into places,

  310. into situations

  311. where frankly

  312. you will not want to go.

  313. Because that is what

  314. being a follower

  315. of Jesus is about.

  316. He knows the worst

  317. things about you

  318. and it's okay.

  319. God meets you

  320. where you are,

  321. but he will not

  322. leave you there.

  323. So back to Peter.

  324. And let's just see

  325. what happens here

  326. because what we see

  327. is he says,

  328. you are the Messiah.

  329. father.

  330. Then,

  331. we also see

  332. that later on,

  333. even after he has been

  334. corrected by Jesus

  335. and it's been explained

  336. to him what

  337. Messiahship means,

  338. the cross

  339. and resurrection,

  340. and whilst it also

  341. sees that

  342. discipleship means

  343. a tough ride,

  344. we find him

  345. later on

  346. denying Jesus.

  347. So what's going on there?

  348. Why,

  349. why would Peter

  350. deny Jesus

  351. three times?

  352. Now for a long,

  353. long time

  354. I thought that was

  355. something to do with

  356. Peter being cowardly.

  357. that he ran out of courage.

  358. Then it became clear,

  359. when you look at the life

  360. of Jesus,

  361. the life of Peter,

  362. whilst he had many faults,

  363. being a coward

  364. was not one of them.

  365. I mean,

  366. just think about this.

  367. Putting aside the fact

  368. that he has just,

  369. in front of everybody else,

  370. he's the first one

  371. to step up to the mark

  372. and say,

  373. Jesus,

  374. you are the Messiah.

  375. That's a bold,

  376. risky and dangerous

  377. thing to do.

  378. Look at the other things

  379. that happen in Jesus' life.

  380. Think, for example,

  381. of the way Matthew

  382. regards the story

  383. of when

  384. they were out

  385. at sea

  386. and Jesus is walking

  387. on the water

  388. towards

  389. the disciples.

  390. There was one disciple

  391. and only one

  392. who gets out

  393. of the boat

  394. and says,

  395. Jesus,

  396. I'm coming out

  397. towards you.

  398. And it's Peter.

  399. Of course,

  400. he quickly sinks

  401. but Jesus pulls him

  402. back up again

  403. because he's not a coward.

  404. Or in John's Gospel

  405. where we have the story

  406. of when Judas,

  407. the betrayer,

  408. leads a group

  409. of Pharisees

  410. and Roman soldiers

  411. to come and arrest

  412. Jesus by night

  413. and they're armed

  414. and we're not told

  415. how many there are

  416. but we're told

  417. that there are

  418. the teachers of the law

  419. and the Roman soldiers.

  420. We're told that

  421. one disciple

  422. is not having this

  423. and he stands

  424. in front of Jesus

  425. and draws his sword

  426. and takes on

  427. the Roman soldiers,

  428. the greatest

  429. fighting force

  430. in the world.

  431. Cuts off

  432. the high priest's ear.

  433. Who is that?

  434. Peter.

  435. Tempestuous,

  436. yes.

  437. Hot tempered

  438. at times,

  439. most definitely.

  440. But a coward,

  441. not Peter,

  442. never.

  443. So if it's not

  444. being a coward

  445. that would drive

  446. Peter to deny

  447. Jesus three times,

  448. what is it?

  449. I want to suggest,

  450. and I don't know this,

  451. this is just

  452. guesswork,

  453. but it's led

  454. by the patterns

  455. that we see

  456. in the character

  457. as he is presented

  458. to us

  459. in the Gospel narratives.

  460. I want to suggest

  461. that what we see

  462. at Peter

  463. by the time

  464. we get to that

  465. denial

  466. is frankly

  467. a broken man.

  468. And that

  469. he's at that point

  470. where he denies

  471. Jesus frankly

  472. because he's lost

  473. the plot.

  474. He doesn't know

  475. what's going on

  476. anymore.

  477. He's invested

  478. everything

  479. in following Jesus.

  480. He's given up

  481. everything,

  482. walked away

  483. and followed

  484. him

  485. for three years.

  486. He's the one

  487. who dared

  488. to call him

  489. Messiah

  490. before anybody

  491. else.

  492. He's the one

  493. who got out

  494. of that boat

  495. and tried

  496. to walk on

  497. water towards him

  498. and found himself

  499. he did for a while

  500. whilst his focus

  501. was on Jesus

  502. and now

  503. he sees

  504. that same Jesus

  505. who's taken away,

  506. arrested

  507. and his whole world

  508. is coming

  509. crashing down.

  510. Have you ever

  511. been in that

  512. situation

  513. where it feels

  514. that there is

  515. no hope left

  516. only despair

  517. to the point

  518. where you would

  519. deny

  520. everything

  521. that you've

  522. previously held

  523. dear about

  524. who God is

  525. and what God

  526. is like

  527. that you come

  528. to that conclusion

  529. that you cannot

  530. stand God

  531. that you cannot

  532. bear the word

  533. God

  534. that church

  535. is something

  536. you won't

  537. when I go

  538. anywhere near

  539. I'm thinking

  540. here of the

  541. image of the

  542. child who

  543. who screams

  544. to their

  545. parents

  546. I hate you

  547. I hate you

  548. I hate you

  549. when deep

  550. deep down

  551. inside

  552. is that

  553. security

  554. that enables

  555. them that

  556. space

  557. to be able

  558. to blurt

  559. that out

  560. even in

  561. that brokenness

  562. in his grief

  563. where he is

  564. torn apart

  565. and he's

  566. completely

  567. and utterly

  568. lost his way

  569. to the extent

  570. where he denies

  571. Jesus

  572. not just once

  573. not twice

  574. but three times

  575. Jesus

  576. does not

  577. stop

  578. believing

  579. in Peter

  580. and even

  581. though there

  582. may be times

  583. that you may

  584. have gone

  585. through

  586. I don't

  587. know

  588. maybe even

  589. going through

  590. quite now

  591. right now

  592. where you

  593. might feel

  594. like throwing

  595. the whole

  596. thing in

  597. and everything

  598. inside you

  599. screams God

  600. is not there

  601. or if he

  602. doesn't care

  603. I don't know

  604. who he is

  605. or what he's

  606. about

  607. even in those

  608. moments

  609. Jesus knows

  610. the worst

  611. things about

  612. you

  613. and it's

  614. alright

  615. we're going

  616. to pray

  617. in just a

  618. moment

  619. and as we

  620. come to

  621. pray

  622. I invite

  623. you to

  624. hold

  625. everything

  626. about you

  627. before

  628. him

  629. knowing

  630. that there's

  631. nothing you

  632. can hide

  633. from him

  634. anyway

  635. but he

  636. knows the

  637. worst things

  638. about you

  639. and it's

  640. okay

  641. you see

  642. it doesn't

  643. end at him

  644. knowing the

  645. worst things

  646. about us

  647. because he

  648. actually knows

  649. the best

  650. things about

  651. us as

  652. well

  653. including

  654. the best

  655. things about

  656. us that we

  657. don't know

  658. about or

  659. may struggle

  660. to accept

  661. things that

  662. in eternity

  663. will become

  664. complete

  665. but even in

  666. this life

  667. he sees

  668. things that

  669. we can't

  670. see

  671. when he

  672. looked at

  673. the Peter

  674. who denied

  675. him three

  676. times

  677. Jesus

  678. didn't just

  679. see the

  680. one who

  681. let him

  682. down

  683. he saw

  684. the rock

  685. the one

  686. upon whom

  687. he said

  688. he would

  689. build his

  690. church

  691. he knows

  692. the worst

  693. and the

  694. best

  695. of each

  696. one of

  697. us

  698. and calls

  699. us like

  700. he did

  701. Peter

  702. to follow

  703. him

  704. so let's

  705. pray together

  706. now

  707. I'm going

  708. to close

  709. my eyes

  710. because I

  711. like to do

  712. that when I

  713. pray but

  714. don't feel

  715. that you

  716. have to

  717. invite you

  718. in this

  719. moment just

  720. to

  721. hold

  722. your

  723. everything

  724. about

  725. yourself

  726. before

  727. God

  728. the good

  729. the bad

  730. and the

  731. ugly

  732. and hold

  733. before him

  734. the worst

  735. things that

  736. you know

  737. about you

  738. here's a

  739. prayer as we

  740. confess those

  741. things to him

  742. Lord you know

  743. the worst

  744. things about

  745. us and

  746. although we

  747. can't really

  748. get our

  749. human minds

  750. around this

  751. it's okay

  752. because you

  753. are love

  754. you accept

  755. us and

  756. you call

  757. us to

  758. be forgiven

  759. and to

  760. know we

  761. are forgiven

  762. and there

  763. are no

  764. exceptions

  765. there

  766. we thank

  767. you

  768. and we

  769. confess to

  770. you our

  771. humanness

  772. our brokenness

  773. and our

  774. sin

  775. and we

  776. are sorry

  777. Lord in

  778. this moment

  779. touch our

  780. lives afresh

  781. with your

  782. Holy Spirit

  783. and remind

  784. us that we

  785. are forgiven

  786. Lord we

  787. bring to

  788. you those

  789. moments those

  790. experiences where

  791. we feel perhaps

  792. so crushed and

  793. broken where we

  794. may feel so

  795. distanced from

  796. you where we

  797. are calling you

  798. into question

  799. where we may

  800. even deny you

  801. and Lord we

  802. lay that before

  803. you

  804. Lord touch our

  805. lives afresh by

  806. your Spirit

  807. and remind us

  808. afresh

  809. that just like

  810. Peter you know

  811. the worst about

  812. us and it's

  813. okay

  814. Lord we're

  815. mindful that

  816. you not only

  817. know the

  818. worst but you

  819. know the best

  820. about us and

  821. that you

  822. meet with us

  823. but you don't

  824. expect to leave

  825. us in that

  826. place

  827. and so Lord

  828. we pray that

  829. your Holy Spirit

  830. would touch us

  831. and lead us

  832. and mature in

  833. us and grow

  834. us to the

  835. point that we

  836. would become the

  837. very best version

  838. of ourselves

  839. help us

  840. every day of

  841. our lives

  842. this week

  843. this day

  844. to hear your

  845. voice

  846. to respond to

  847. the challenge of

  848. your voice

  849. and to rise and

  850. to become the

  851. people that you

  852. long for us to

  853. be in every

  854. situation

  855. in every

  856. conversation

  857. whether that be

  858. in the home

  859. in the workplace

  860. in our interactions

  861. with people that we

  862. find difficult to

  863. interact with

  864. faith

  865. Holy Spirit

  866. move in us

  867. we pray

  868. that your

  869. kingdom would

  870. come in our

  871. lives

  872. that we may

  873. become the

  874. people that you

  875. long for us

  876. to become

  877. now

  878. and in the

  879. time to come

  880. in Jesus name

  881. we pray

  882. Amen

  883. Amen
