  1. Learning to trust. I love that this is the theme today. And I think that our word, thank

  2. ! you Sonia for bringing that. I could listen to you read all day. So much steady peace and clarity

  3. for us to hear what God is saying to us this morning. I just pray Lord as I speak this morning.

  4. Amen. Holy Spirit would you come and open our hearts to hear what you would have us hear.

  5. Lord I offer to you in my hands what I've prepared and Lord I pray that you would take it and you

  6. would use it for your glory. In Jesus name. Amen. So Tim I didn't know you would be praying for TLG

  7. this morning, Transforming Lives for Good. Lots of you know it's the organisation that I now work for

  8. and we have in one of our booklets, one of our resources, a lovely activity that we do with

  9. children and it says who I would get to hold the rope for me and you can't probably see it very

  10. clearly but there's a little person hanging off a cliff holding desperately onto a rope

  11. and there's nobody at the top and we just do some colouring together and we chat about

  12. who might you like to be at the top of that cliff holding tight onto that rope and who would you trust

  13. to do that? So just hold that in mind as we explore this passage this morning and I'm going to invite you

  14. to just connect with your inner child or perhaps as an adult this is something that you find easy to do

  15. anyway. I'm going to ask you to use your imaginations. I think some of us just are like yes let's just

  16. imagine and probably some of us are like not so easy but I'm going to ask you to imagine yourself

  17. into this passage this morning. I've been doing the same. So I imagine being swept into this huge crowd

  18. we get to hear that there's 5,000 men there but we know that there would also have been lots of women

  19. and probably children who would have travelled following Jesus. Desperate to see what might happen

  20. next on this incredible adventure that was unfolding. Let's remember our perspective is 2,000 years later

  21. at this moment in time where we are now in our imaginations we're following Jesus wondering

  22. are we going to see any more miracles? Are we going to see anything else that is going to convince us

  23. that this man is the one chosen by God to be the Messiah? And now here we are in a spacious place.

  24. We're on the far shore of the Sea of Galilee. Sounds delightful but there's a problem because we've

  25. been travelling for a few days and we are hungry and we don't have enough food. In fact we don't have any food

  26. food to go round. Now Jesus' disciples are closest to him and we notice them. They're having a little bit

  27. of a chat and we overhear two interactions and what do we notice in our response as we hear this? Well firstly

  28. we hear Jesus asking Philip where to buy bread for all these people.

  29. I think I see that Jesus cares. He cares that we're hungry and that we need to be fed.

  30. But Philip replies

  31. well we just can't. We would need more than half a year's wages in some translations that's how it comes

  32. through. More than half a year's wages to be able to buy enough bread for all these people. So it's a bit

  33. of a no-go. But then we hear Andrew. Andrew draws Peter's attention, Jesus' attention to this young lad

  34. who actually does have a little bit of food. He's got five loaves and a couple of fish.

  35. Now what are you thinking at this point? Are you thinking

  36. well we've seen some miracles happen

  37. maybe maybe we might have another miracle or are you thinking Andrew you're mad?

  38. as a child he's got five bread two fish. He's probably quite capable. When it was a child it

  39. might have been kind of a young teenager. I've got two well not only one of them is still a teenager

  40. but I'm thinking could easily get through five loaves of bread in about five minutes.

  41. So perhaps it's a bit irrelevant and a bit unhelpful Andrew that you're pointing out that

  42. there's a child with five loaves and two fishes. But before we know it what are we seeing? We're seeing

  43. Jesus break this bread, give thanks to God for it and then it's starting to be distributed and it goes on

  44. and on and on and on. In fact we hear that there was more than enough for everyone and then at the end

  45. Jesus asks his disciples to just gather up all the leftovers.

  46. That blows my mind. It's so confusing that there's stuff left over enough for 12 basketfuls.

  47. I like the numbers here. It's very specific isn't it? Five loaves, two fish, feed more than 5,000 people,

  48. 12 baskets left over. Crazy. What have we just seen happen? An absolute miracle.

  49. Something outside of what we can understand or imagine. What have we noticed?

  50. And what does God want us to notice today and learn from this?

  51. Well interestingly when Jesus asked Philip about where to buy the bread, thinking as if there's

  52. just going to be like a corner shop, we're told that he only asked this to stretch Philip's faith.

  53. To stretch Philip's faith. He already knew what he was going to do. Jesus of course already knew what he was going to do.

  54. And Philip uses his logic and his kind of human perspective of what he sees in front of him

  55. to conclude that it's actually impossible to feed everybody.

  56. So that's the first thing I notice.

  57. And I wonder how often do we immediately engage our logical thinking,

  58. our human perspective of the resources that we can see in front of us

  59. and swiftly conclude or assume that this situation is impossible.

  60. It's not going to change.

  61. But then there's Andrew's response.

  62. A bit of a contrast.

  63. He notices this small boy with barely any food,

  64. but at least there's something.

  65. A starting point.

  66. So I wonder if faith was stirring in Andrew.

  67. If he was remembering recent experiences,

  68. seeing Jesus heal a paralyzed man in Jerusalem.

  69. Or that son that he brought back to life from the dead.

  70. Or the miracle in Cana,

  71. when Jesus had turned all that water into wine.

  72. Andrew does the noticing.

  73. He looks around and he sees what there is,

  74. not what there isn't.

  75. And the young boy simply offers what he has in his hands.

  76. And Jesus does the rest.

  77. And the result is multiplication and abundance.

  78. Not a little bit more.

  79. Multiplication and abundance.

  80. How often are we seeking God's intervention?

  81. Wanting him to bring change to things that we are facing?

  82. Quite often would be my response.

  83. Quite often I'm having that conversation with God.

  84. But how often do I forget

  85. that what he is wanting is for me to notice

  86. what I've already got in my hands?

  87. What little do I have

  88. that I haven't really noticed

  89. that I can bring before him

  90. no matter how small

  91. and trust him

  92. to multiply it

  93. or grow it.

  94. Maybe in a miraculous, incredible,

  95. in the moment kind of way.

  96. Or maybe steadily

  97. over time

  98. when we get to then one day

  99. look back and see,

  100. oh yeah,

  101. I remember that moment in time

  102. when just that

  103. tiniest bit of faith

  104. that I was managing to muster

  105. encouraged me in my spirit

  106. to offer to God

  107. what I have in my hands.

  108. And we see the fruit.

  109. I believe that Jesus is always asking us

  110. to look at what we've got in our hands

  111. no matter how inadequate it might seem

  112. or how inadequate we may feel.

  113. And in today's passage

  114. I think something that I am learning

  115. again

  116. is through the actions of a small child

  117. that child-like response.

  118. Here.

  119. Yeah, have it.

  120. Have what I've got.

  121. He gives all that he's got

  122. to Jesus.

  123. He doesn't say

  124. oh go on then

  125. you can just have one loaf

  126. I'll keep the rest.

  127. He clearly gives it all

  128. to Jesus

  129. in the hope

  130. that it can be

  131. so much more.

  132. So again

  133. I wonder

  134. how often

  135. are we so focused

  136. on what is in our hands

  137. and judging it

  138. to be a very

  139. very limited resource

  140. or insignificant offering

  141. that we forget

  142. to look up

  143. to have our head

  144. lifted

  145. by God

  146. and see his invitation

  147. to bring it

  148. fully

  149. totally

  150. and offer it.

  151. or perhaps

  152. we recognise

  153. the feeling

  154. of

  155. knowing

  156. and noticing

  157. what's in our hands

  158. we can see

  159. what's there

  160. but we cannot

  161. quite trust God

  162. enough

  163. to let it go

  164. to bring it

  165. to offer it

  166. and trust

  167. that he is able

  168. to do so much more

  169. than we can do alone.

  170. Maybe faith in action

  171. is this learning

  172. to trust

  173. that if we take

  174. the little we have

  175. and offer it

  176. to Jesus

  177. it's this very act

  178. of obedience

  179. and hope

  180. that we'll see

  181. God

  182. change

  183. the circumstances

  184. and the situations

  185. that we've written off

  186. as impossible

  187. to change.

  188. No point in trying.

  189. So let's just pause

  190. and just consider

  191. just in your own spirit

  192. what areas of life

  193. perhaps

  194. that you've noticed

  195. over the years

  196. or right at the moment

  197. do we struggle

  198. to trust Jesus with?

  199. Where are we

  200. holding on

  201. just a little bit

  202. too tightly

  203. to our own resources

  204. desperately

  205. just trying to make

  206. them enough

  207. for the situations

  208. we're facing

  209. when really

  210. we need a miracle.

  211. as I thought

  212. about this

  213. I felt

  214. God prompt me

  215. to share

  216. three

  217. little things

  218. that I noticed

  219. have noticed

  220. over the years

  221. so

  222. my background

  223. is in teaching

  224. I loved teaching

  225. I thought

  226. I would

  227. teach

  228. forever

  229. and when we

  230. had Tom

  231. our youngest

  232. child

  233. I had an

  234. experience that

  235. I hadn't

  236. experienced before

  237. I felt a very

  238. clear call

  239. on my life

  240. and I had

  241. help from others

  242. around me to

  243. discern that

  244. and it felt like

  245. it was a call

  246. to the church

  247. and in the end

  248. I concluded

  249. that it must

  250. have been God

  251. because it really

  252. wasn't something

  253. that I was planning

  254. or particularly

  255. thinking

  256. would be

  257. like a next

  258. step for me

  259. but in that

  260. period of time

  261. something very

  262. practical

  263. happened

  264. as I

  265. sort of like

  266. prayed

  267. and

  268. journeyed

  269. a little bit

  270. about what

  271. would that look

  272. like to maybe

  273. move and work

  274. for the church

  275. I explored

  276. ministry

  277. it definitely

  278. was like

  279. full-time

  280. ministry

  281. whatever that's

  282. called

  283. ordination

  284. but it wasn't

  285. the right time

  286. for that

  287. God had

  288. other plans

  289. but I was

  290. thinking

  291. practically

  292. you know

  293. I'm supposed

  294. to be going

  295. back to work

  296. God

  297. and in that

  298. time

  299. a couple

  300. from our

  301. church

  302. came forward

  303. and without

  304. knowing our

  305. circumstances

  306. fully

  307. I don't think

  308. at the time

  309. offered to

  310. support us

  311. financially

  312. a little bit

  313. each month

  314. so I didn't

  315. go back to

  316. work

  317. I started

  318. doing quite a

  319. lot of work

  320. with the church

  321. but it wasn't

  322. a job

  323. and we had

  324. this financial

  325. support from

  326. this couple

  327. but what I

  328. didn't know

  329. at that time

  330. as well

  331. there was

  332. something called

  333. child tax credit

  334. and we then

  335. became eligible

  336. for this

  337. and cut a

  338. longer story

  339. short

  340. the first

  341. month that

  342. we should

  343. have had my

  344. salary back

  345. for teaching

  346. I hadn't

  347. gone back

  348. to teaching

  349. we had

  350. the support

  351. that we were

  352. being given

  353. by this

  354. couple

  355. and this

  356. child tax

  357. credit

  358. that was

  359. new to

  360. us

  361. and do

  362. you know

  363. the amount

  364. that came

  365. into our

  366. bank account

  367. that month

  368. was exactly

  369. the same

  370. to the

  371. pound

  372. that was

  373. my teaching

  374. salary

  375. if I'd

  376. gone back

  377. to teaching

  378. it was

  379. such an

  380. exact

  381. thing

  382. it felt

  383. like

  384. something

  385. that God

  386. was showing

  387. us

  388. trust me

  389. and

  390. you will

  391. be resourced

  392. for this

  393. period of

  394. time

  395. and then

  396. I found

  397. in my

  398. the oldest

  399. Bible I've

  400. got at the

  401. moment

  402. from when

  403. I came

  404. to faith

  405. I would

  406. say I

  407. came into

  408. a relationship

  409. with God

  410. in my

  411. early 20s

  412. when I did

  413. an alpha

  414. course

  415. and I

  416. bought this

  417. Bible at

  418. that time

  419. and then

  420. I found

  421. in Proverbs

  422. where it

  423. says

  424. trust in

  425. the Lord

  426. with all

  427. your heart

  428. and it

  429. says

  430. baby

  431. and that

  432. was after

  433. Peter and

  434. I had got

  435. married and

  436. we were

  437. hoping that

  438. we would

  439. have a

  440. family

  441. we weren't

  442. sure if

  443. that was

  444. going to

  445. happen

  446. and someone

  447. read this

  448. verse to

  449. me and I've

  450. got it

  451. underlined

  452. and we now

  453. have Martha

  454. who's 25

  455. so I

  456. just remembered

  457. that that

  458. was somewhere

  459. in my

  460. Bible

  461. and another

  462. time that

  463. I felt I

  464. wanted to

  465. share where

  466. I was pregnant

  467. for a second

  468. time and had

  469. a lot of

  470. complications

  471. and the song

  472. I'm going to

  473. trust in God

  474. Martha was

  475. little at that

  476. time she used

  477. to love that

  478. song and all

  479. the actions

  480. but those

  481. words are

  482. just all over

  483. my journal

  484. at that time

  485. because we

  486. needed to

  487. trust

  488. and the

  489. last time

  490. or last

  491. thing that

  492. I wanted

  493. to share

  494. was an

  495. experience I

  496. had when

  497. my dad

  498. was dying

  499. and I

  500. didn't know

  501. where dad

  502. was at

  503. with faith

  504. he was

  505. quite young

  506. he was

  507. just 60

  508. and I

  509. was driving

  510. up the

  511. seafront

  512. and it

  513. was such

  514. a tangible

  515. experience

  516. I was praying

  517. I was kind

  518. of crying

  519. out to God

  520. I need

  521. to know

  522. God

  523. I need

  524. to know

  525. like where

  526. is dad

  527. with faith

  528. and is

  529. he you

  530. know is

  531. there something

  532. beyond this

  533. life for

  534. him

  535. and I

  536. felt it

  537. wasn't an

  538. audible voice

  539. it was like

  540. that where

  541. you hear

  542. God in

  543. your spirit

  544. as strong

  545. as if it's

  546. an audible

  547. voice and

  548. I felt like

  549. God said

  550. to me

  551. you don't

  552. need to

  553. know

  554. Kate

  555. you need

  556. to trust

  557. and that

  558. phrase

  559. has stuck

  560. with me

  561. that's 17

  562. 18 years

  563. ago now

  564. you don't

  565. need

  566. to know

  567. you need

  568. to trust

  569. so for me

  570. remembering

  571. God's

  572. faithfulness

  573. just sharing

  574. just a few

  575. nuggets of

  576. times that I

  577. remember where

  578. trust was so

  579. important

  580. remembering

  581. those

  582. is so

  583. important

  584. for me

  585. it helps

  586. strengthen

  587. my trust

  588. journaling

  589. helps me

  590. with that

  591. keeping

  592. notes of

  593. kind of

  594. what God

  595. is saying

  596. in this

  597. day or

  598. this week

  599. or this

  600. year

  601. and being

  602. able to

  603. look back

  604. and see

  605. patterns

  606. others have

  607. different

  608. things I

  609. know

  610. but how

  611. else do

  612. we grow

  613. in trust

  614. how else

  615. do we

  616. learn

  617. to trust

  618. well

  619. thankfully

  620. we are

  621. not alone

  622. in this

  623. challenge

  624. ask anyone

  625. around you

  626. and they

  627. will have a

  628. conversation

  629. with you

  630. about when

  631. it's hard

  632. to trust

  633. and how

  634. they hope

  635. to or how

  636. they have

  637. grown in

  638. trust

  639. so community

  640. together

  641. doing life

  642. together

  643. doing faith

  644. together

  645. journeying

  646. together in

  647. faith

  648. is so

  649. important

  650. and then

  651. praise God

  652. for his

  653. word

  654. for scripture

  655. because it

  656. is full

  657. of people

  658. just like

  659. you

  660. and I

  661. and very

  662. helpfully

  663. I think

  664. at the

  665. back

  666. just look

  667. up the

  668. word trust

  669. and here

  670. are all

  671. the verses

  672. and I was

  673. looking through

  674. them yesterday

  675. reading them

  676. all through

  677. just these

  678. ones that

  679. have been

  680. pointed out

  681. here

  682. like reading

  683. about how

  684. in 1 Samuel

  685. David

  686. strengthened

  687. himself

  688. with trust

  689. in his

  690. God

  691. and how

  692. in 2 Kings

  693. Hezekiah

  694. put his

  695. whole trust

  696. in the God

  697. of Israel

  698. and God

  699. held fast

  700. to him

  701. through all

  702. his adventures

  703. I could go

  704. on and on

  705. and you

  706. don't need

  707. me to do

  708. that

  709. I think

  710. all you

  711. need me

  712. to do

  713. is encourage

  714. you

  715. to either

  716. go to a

  717. Bible

  718. or get

  719. online

  720. on the Bible

  721. on your phone

  722. and look up

  723. the word trust

  724. and allow

  725. time for those

  726. scriptures

  727. to speak

  728. to you

  729. but the one

  730. that stuck out

  731. for me

  732. yesterday

  733. is in the

  734. message version

  735. in Romans 8

  736. and it says

  737. this

  738. I felt like

  739. God was speaking

  740. this to me

  741. and I'm sharing

  742. it with you

  743. take what you

  744. will

  745. those who

  746. think they

  747. can do it

  748. on their

  749. own

  750. end up

  751. obsessed with

  752. measuring their

  753. own moral

  754. muscle

  755. but never

  756. get around

  757. to exercising

  758. it in real

  759. life

  760. those who

  761. trust

  762. God's

  763. action

  764. in them

  765. find that

  766. God's

  767. spirit

  768. is in

  769. them

  770. living

  771. and

  772. breathing

  773. God

  774. obsession

  775. with self

  776. in these

  777. matters

  778. is a

  779. dead

  780. end

  781. attention

  782. to

  783. God

  784. leads us

  785. out

  786. into the

  787. open

  788. into a

  789. spacious

  790. free

  791. life

  792. and that

  793. reminded me

  794. of our

  795. verse this

  796. morning

  797. talking about

  798. being out

  799. in a

  800. spacious

  801. place

  802. that can

  803. be a

  804. real

  805. space

  806. or it

  807. can be

  808. a picture

  809. of where

  810. God wants

  811. to draw

  812. us to a

  813. space

  814. that feels

  815. spacious

  816. enough

  817. for us

  818. to be

  819. safe

  820. with

  821. him

  822. that

  823. felt

  824. safety

  825. so we

  826. can grow

  827. in our

  828. trust

  829. of him

  830. praying

  831. sitting

  832. with

  833. God

  834. sharing

  835. our

  836. hearts

  837. listening

  838. building

  839. relationship

  840. and wondering

  841. in that

  842. way of

  843. spiritual

  844. connection

  845. builds

  846. trust

  847. so we've

  848. got one

  849. another

  850. we've got

  851. his word

  852. we've got

  853. prayer

  854. and as we

  855. worship and

  856. give thanks

  857. let's be asking

  858. God to

  859. strengthen

  860. this trust

  861. in us

  862. and underpinning

  863. all of these

  864. rhythms

  865. is an

  866. attitude

  867. of

  868. being

  869. willing

  870. to

  871. surrender

  872. taking

  873. what's

  874. in our

  875. hands

  876. and being

  877. able to

  878. release

  879. it

  880. surrendering

  881. our own

  882. worries

  883. our

  884. resources

  885. our

  886. circumstances

  887. our

  888. relationships

  889. to the

  890. one

  891. who is

  892. able

  893. to do

  894. abundantly

  895. so much

  896. more than

  897. we can

  898. ever

  899. hope

  900. or imagine

  901. so just

  902. as we

  903. come towards

  904. an end

  905. I want us

  906. to just

  907. jump back

  908. and think

  909. about this

  910. notion

  911. of there

  912. being

  913. more

  914. than

  915. enough

  916. because that

  917. caught my

  918. attention

  919. and in

  920. 2

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  921. Corinthians

  922. chapter 9

  923. it says

  924. this

  925. God is

  926. able to

  927. bless

  928. you

  929. abundantly

  930. so that

  931. in all

  932. things

  933. at all

  934. times

  935. having all

  936. that you

  937. need

  938. you will

  939. abound

  940. in every

  941. good work

  942. as it is

  943. written

  944. they have

  945. freely

  946. scattered

  947. their

  948. gifts

  949. to the

  950. poor

  951. their

  952. righteousness

  953. endures

  954. forever

  955. now he

  956. who supplies

  957. the seed

  958. to the

  959. sower

  960. and the

  961. bread

  962. for food

  963. will also

  964. supply

  965. and increase

  966. your

  967. store

  968. of seed

  969. and will

  970. enlarge

  971. your harvest

  972. of righteousness

  973. you will

  974. be enriched

  975. in every

  976. way

  977. so that

  978. you can

  979. be generous

  980. on every

  981. occasion

  982. and through

  983. us your

  984. generosity

  985. will result

  986. in thanksgiving

  987. to God

  988. Philip's doubt

  989. was met

  990. with Jesus'

  991. multiplication

  992. of a

  993. limited human

  994. resource

  995. that was

  996. offered to

  997. him

  998. and because

  999. of that

  1000. he shared

  1001. a miraculous

  1002. and abundant

  1003. provision

  1004. that fed

  1005. everyone

  1006. and

  1007. there was

  1008. more than

  1009. enough

  1010. let's

  1011. remember

  1012. that

  1013. Philip's

  1014. lack of

  1015. trust

  1016. was gently

  1017. pointed out

  1018. to him

  1019. by Jesus

  1020. asking a

  1021. pertinent

  1022. question

  1023. I love

  1024. that

  1025. so I

  1026. wonder

  1027. is Jesus

  1028. asking us

  1029. any questions

  1030. this morning

  1031. is he

  1032. asking us

  1033. to notice

  1034. what's in

  1035. our hands

  1036. is he

  1037. asking us

  1038. to

  1039. notice

  1040. the need

  1041. to release

  1042. what's in

  1043. our hands

  1044. to him

  1045. to trust

  1046. him

  1047. with it

  1048. more

  1049. to

  1050. choose

  1051. him

  1052. to be

  1053. at the

  1054. top

  1055. holding

  1056. our

  1057. rope

  1058. is he

  1059. asking us

  1060. what does

  1061. more than

  1062. enough

  1063. look like

  1064. and what

  1065. does it

  1066. mean

  1067. to be

  1068. generous

  1069. with the

  1070. enough

  1071. that we

  1072. have

  1073. that is

  1074. left over

  1075. for us

  1076. to share

  1077. so we're

  1078. just going

  1079. to pause

  1080. and before

  1081. we draw

  1082. our time

  1083. to a

  1084. close

  1085. with one

  1086. last time

  1087. of worship

  1088. through song

  1089. in the

  1090. quiet

  1091. let's

  1092. ask God

  1093. is there

  1094. a question

  1095. he is

  1096. asking us

  1097. this morning

  1098. to stir

  1099. some noticing

  1100. in us

  1101. Lord we

  1102. pray that

  1103. you would

  1104. help us

  1105. as we

  1106. go from

  1107. this place

  1108. notice

  1109. what you're

  1110. asking us

  1111. today

  1112. how may

  1113. we grow

  1114. in our

  1115. faith

  1116. learn to

  1117. trust you

  1118. more

  1119. notice

  1120. what's

  1121. in our

  1122. hands

  1123. and offer

  1124. it to

  1125. you

  1126. wholly

  1127. Jesus

  1128. would you

  1129. help us

  1130. we ask

  1131. in your

  1132. name

  1133. Amen

  1134. Amen

  1135. Thank you.
