  1. Last week I talked about the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit that comes on this group of people. Remember, 500 people watching fly up into the sky. 380 decide, hey, actually, sorry, it was pretty cool. I'm just going to go back to my normal life. 120 said, I can't turn back now. There's something here that I cannot unsee. And so I have to do something. And 120 of them said that. And they said, well, where should we go? Well, let's go find a room. Let's go find the upper room and let's just pray there. How long should we pray there? For a few hours?

  2. Let's do that more than that. Let's do a day. No, let's do more than that. So two, three, four, five, 10 days, this group of 120 pray going, God, we cannot go back. Can you send us the Holy Spirit? And after 10 days, finally, he comes and boom.

  3. And what we saw was in Genesis 11, the Tower of Babel, God sees the pride of man trying to make a name for themselves. So he confuses them and gives them lots of different languages. So they start talking to each other in different languages and they can't understand each other. So they can't build this big tower.

  4. So they have to scatter and do what God asked them to do. Fill the earth with my glory. Go instead of build your own tower.

  5. And you see, at Pentecost, there's a beautiful redemption, reversal of that curse, because now they do understand each other because of the Holy Spirit.

  6. And what's being shared? The good news of Jesus Christ, the mighty works of God.

  7. This reversal of the Tower of Babel is just beautiful.

  8. And then, of course, we talked about the Passover, which is when Moses came down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments, with these two tablets.

  9. And he himself came down with the law. But now at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit comes down on everyone.

  10. How beautiful is that? And back then, 3,000 people died because of what they did that was wrong.

  11. But now at Pentecost, 3,000 people are saved. Another reversal, another redemption of what happened in the past.

  12. The Holy Spirit is doing something, moving amongst his people.

  13. And so they scatter out. They start going and they start speaking these languages they don't understand themselves.

  14. And people in the streets are like, why are you speaking my language? How do you know what to say to me?

  15. God speaks in my language? That's crazy.

  16. And so the gospel, the church, is born that day. That is the church's birthday.

  17. And so as they're talking, then what happens is people are like, what is going on?

  18. And then Peter stands up and says, hey, guys, they're not drunk. It's nine o'clock in the morning.

  19. Actually, they've not even finished fasting yet, so they've definitely not drank anything.

  20. This is something else.

  21. And then he shares this passage here that we're going to read a little bit of today.

  22. And he starts to quote the prophet Joel.

  23. And he says, in the last days, his spirit will pour out on who? On all.

  24. So Moses went up to the mountain by himself to meet God by himself.

  25. But now the spirit is on all.

  26. And I asked the question, hey, imagine if Moses was at Pentecost.

  27. This Moses, who was so keen to see God, he was like, God, let me see you.

  28. And God says, you can't see me. If you saw me, you would die.

  29. But I'll hide behind this cleft, hide behind my hand, and you'll catch a glimpse of me.

  30. And that'll be enough.

  31. So that was Moses.

  32. And so when he went up to the mountain, there was fire.

  33. And so he would have seen God at this the most incredible way.

  34. The burning bush, this bush that should have been consumed by fire, was just there burning.

  35. And Moses got to see, basically meet with God.

  36. So he, imagine him at Pentecost, he would have been like, guys, you guys, do you realize what you've got?

  37. Only I could go up and I was terrified.

  38. But now you guys have him living inside you.

  39. And I pitched the question to all of us.

  40. Imagine if we were all, each individually, a burning bush.

  41. That's what we are.

  42. Imagine Moses stepping into here, is what I said.

  43. He'd be like, you guys all have the burning bush inside you, and yet you're just sat there.

  44. Not living the life that you're supposed to live.

  45. And then I said, well, what about if you feel that way?

  46. You feel stale.

  47. You don't feel as though you're really connected to God.

  48. You're not on fire.

  49. What do you do?

  50. And I said, go find someone who is on fire and sit next to them.

  51. Catch their fire.

  52. Sit next to them and you will feel that fire burn and it will inspire you.

  53. Today, I have the pleasure of having a conversation in front of you with actually one of my burning bushes.

  54. So this lady that I'm going to introduce you to, she is incredible.

  55. You sit with her for 30 minutes, for just an hour about, and to hear what she does, you'll be like, this lady is a superhero.

  56. But before she comes up, I want to tell you, she is not a superhero.

  57. And she will tell you she's a not superhero.

  58. Because often, where you're sat, you might think, well, do you know that missions life?

  59. That go make disciples of all nations?

  60. That preach the gospel?

  61. It's for people who are pastors.

  62. It's for people who are missionaries.

  63. It's for people who are willing to go to Africa and do crazy things.

  64. I'm not that person.

  65. I'm just a banker.

  66. I'm just a physio.

  67. Just a moment of silence there for our physios.

  68. Only joking, I love my physio.

  69. He's so good.

  70. But what I'm here to tell you is, this lady I'm about to introduce you will seem like a superhero.

  71. But first and foremost, I want to tell you that she's just my friend.

  72. She's my friend who said a simple yes to God.

  73. And then she said another simple yes and another simple yes.

  74. So we're going to go on a journey together.

  75. And she's got some pictures that she's going to show us.

  76. About what she does.

  77. And I'm super excited for this.

  78. So can I invite you just to give a round of applause for Joyce to come up and join me.

  79. Hey Joyce.

  80. Hello.

  81. Do you want to take a seat anywhere?

  82. While you get ready, let me just do this.

  83. I have to hijack this.

  84. I'm so proud of your pastor, James and Christina.

  85. I'm bursting with pride.

  86. And I'm so glad that you have them.

  87. And I know you'll appreciate them.

  88. But they make...

  89. I just want to honor them for a minute.

  90. They make sacrifices that you and I don't know.

  91. They and their family.

  92. So I just love on them.

  93. And then I think you guys are so blessed to have them.

  94. So I want you to give all your support to them.

  95. Even before they ask you, you go and volunteer.

  96. Because they are amazing.

  97. And you can see it.

  98. God's hand is on them.

  99. God's anointed them.

  100. And it's so exciting.

  101. I'm just so thrilled to be here today.

  102. Thank you.

  103. Thank you.

  104. No more nice things.

  105. This is supposed to be the pulpit where we open up the word of God.

  106. But I really do believe that this is...

  107. This is actually something that I think that God has his hand in.

  108. And what I hope that as we have this conversation with you is...

  109. You ask yourself, what's your simple yes?

  110. But if you would allow me to give me five minutes to recount my story,

  111. with Joyce, because it's a crazy one.

  112. Which leads us to where we're at right now.

  113. Because when did you first meet Christina and I?

  114. Tell people that.

  115. When they were 18 and someone had hair.

  116. Lots of it.

  117. Too much of it.

  118. And I wasted it.

  119. And so the Lord punished me.

  120. Yeah, so we grew up in the Chinese church.

  121. I told you that.

  122. The Chinese church that was, you know, typical Chinese church.

  123. But when we went to university, we bumped into someone who said,

  124. oh, what church are you going to go to?

  125. And we said, oh, we're probably going to go to the Chinese church.

  126. And then someone said, well, hey, have you heard of Hope City?

  127. And we didn't really know what it was.

  128. We said, oh, okay.

  129. Sunday, come and try out on a Sunday evening.

  130. So we went to this church, which is an Aussie church,

  131. which is called Hope City.

  132. Just the two of us.

  133. And we were shocked.

  134. And I told you this before.

  135. Because it was like, worship actually sounds good.

  136. Like, the people sing in tune.

  137. And there's this thing called a synth pad, which covers all your mistakes.

  138. And we were like, Christians are cool.

  139. And this was when Christina and I had first started dating.

  140. Yes.

  141. And so you knew us way before, way before.

  142. And Joyce, you were just part of that journey

  143. and just showing us a different side of Christianity, right?

  144. Do you remember anything about us?

  145. Oh, I remember two really good-looking people showing up at our house

  146. with my husband where I was.

  147. We were on furlough, I think.

  148. Oh, no, no, no, no.

  149. We've got three kids.

  150. So the first one was born.

  151. And then I went back to the UK to give birth to the second and the third one.

  152. So I think it's that period because of childbearing reasons that we've got to meet.

  153. That's not a bad.

  154. Okay, let's keep going.

  155. And so imagine Christina and I, 18 and 19, we go to...

  156. To our cell group.

  157. You were at our cell group, yeah.

  158. And we go to their house.

  159. And we actually, because you lived in Sheffield,

  160. which is just a godforsaken land, we stayed over.

  161. I remember that.

  162. And then I was looking...

  163. I don't remember that.

  164. And then I was looking through a photo album.

  165. I don't know why you even gave me a photo album to look at.

  166. And then I saw a picture of this teenager in there.

  167. And I was like, how do you know Victor?

  168. Who was actually maybe a kid that through my relatives in Hong Kong

  169. had gone to UK for boarding school

  170. and ended up staying at our house

  171. because our parents were being guardians for them.

  172. And I said, Joyce, how do you know Victor?

  173. My cousin.

  174. And then I was like, whoa, that's a crazy different connection.

  175. Fast forward a few years,

  176. we go back to Birmingham where our church was.

  177. And we were interning there.

  178. And then you...

  179. Yeah, so like I said, we've got three kids.

  180. So you'll soon find out that I basically live in Africa.

  181. And our three kids were...

  182. I had to homeschool them.

  183. And I'm very proud that they're all still alive.

  184. They've survived my homeschooling.

  185. And then so the...

  186. And then since then, God,

  187. when they went to secondary school,

  188. God blessed all of them with scholarships

  189. in boarding schools in the UK.

  190. So we had to have guardians.

  191. And we were visiting the guardians of my firstborn.

  192. They were my school friends in university.

  193. And they said, we've got a surprise for you.

  194. And I was like, ta-da!

  195. Like, oh, there's a new pastor who's interning at our church.

  196. He's called James.

  197. And she's like, what?

  198. I know James when he was 18,

  199. when he had lots of hair.

  200. And so we ended up meeting in Birmingham.

  201. And we were just having lunch.

  202. And we were like, hey, actually,

  203. we feel called to go to Hong Kong.

  204. This was a few years into it.

  205. And she was like, oh, we're in Hong Kong.

  206. I said, well, there's this church called...

  207. Wait for it.

  208. KFC.

  209. Because no one knows KFC outside of Hong Kong.

  210. And she was like, oh, Hong Kong.

  211. Hong Kong is one of our biggest supporting churches.

  212. And then your brother's in-laws

  213. were at our house trying to...

  214. It is a crazy story.

  215. Are you keeping up?

  216. Or you're lost?

  217. You're lost.

  218. You're lost.

  219. Anyway, it's just crazy coincidence

  220. that our lives just keep overlapping one another

  221. across, what, three countries?

  222. Yeah.

  223. Three countries?

  224. And final one.

  225. And then Christina starts working

  226. in this international school,

  227. Yiu Cheng.

  228. And she sits down at her desk for the first time.

  229. And then there's a flyer on her desk.

  230. And what is it?

  231. It's New Site Congo.

  232. And somehow you were involved

  233. in the school that we were in,

  234. the church that we came to,

  235. the old church that we were in,

  236. and the university,

  237. and the church that we were in.

  238. So you can see this is just a story

  239. that has been going full circle.

  240. And last Tuesday,

  241. we just caught up for a little bit.

  242. And I was like, you know what?

  243. Are you free on Sunday?

  244. Let's talk.

  245. Because I've sat with you for 30 minutes,

  246. and I feel like I'm on fire again,

  247. which is exactly what I talked about last week.

  248. And so maybe you need to hear

  249. a little bit of this story.

  250. But Joyce, I want you to tell people

  251. a little bit about you and Hong Kong.

  252. You grew up here.

  253. Yeah.

  254. What school did you go to?

  255. I don't want to say anything.

  256. How you can.

  257. I went to a school called

  258. Darsus and Girls School,

  259. commonly known as DGS.

  260. And then I went to a school

  261. called United World College,

  262. UWC, which is in the UK.

  263. And then I went to University of Edinburgh,

  264. where I studied medicine.

  265. Where you studied medicine.

  266. And then that's when you,

  267. oh, actually, we can put some pictures up.

  268. By the way, I have no idea

  269. what slides he's putting up.

  270. So this is as much a surprise to you as to me.

  271. Well, it's a surprise to them

  272. because they don't usually get slides.

  273. So this is already.

  274. Oh, okay.

  275. So next picture.

  276. So you grew up in Hong Kong.

  277. You became a doctor.

  278. Next picture.

  279. That's when you became a doctor.

  280. Yes, that was when I had black hair too.

  281. Where was this?

  282. This was in Gabon,

  283. which was where I did the elective

  284. during medical school.

  285. So I had this really well thought out plan.

  286. So like I said, I was in,

  287. I can just talk, right?

  288. Yeah.

  289. Okay, you just stop me

  290. when I talk too much.

  291. Okay, good, good.

  292. So I was in University of Edinburgh

  293. and I've always had a sense of calling

  294. that God wanted me to go to Africa,

  295. even though I'm not actually very adventurous.

  296. Actually, put it differently.

  297. I was not adventurous.

  298. I don't like camping.

  299. I don't really like insects or anything like that,

  300. but I just felt I was supposed to go to Africa.

  301. So I had four months

  302. where I could go anywhere in the world

  303. for my electives.

  304. So that was a really good plan.

  305. The first two months,

  306. I was going to go to Africa,

  307. to a country called Gabon,

  308. where I was going to see whether or not

  309. there's some God meat in it, you know?

  310. And then my second half

  311. was probably more important to me at the time,

  312. was to go back to Hong Kong

  313. on a very serious mission,

  314. which was to find a Chinese Christian boyfriend.

  315. Because in Edinburgh,

  316. back then, it was a desert,

  317. like,

  318. you want a Chinese and a Christian?

  319. That was like,

  320. you've got to come home to find a boy.

  321. So I packed up my big,

  322. you know,

  323. rucksack,

  324. and I had lots of donated medicine.

  325. I was a druggie,

  326. you know,

  327. medicine.

  328. Bring it to this mission hospital,

  329. and that's where I was.

  330. Wow.

  331. Yeah,

  332. in the middle of a rainforest.

  333. Like,

  334. yeah,

  335. it was crazy.

  336. And you don't end up finding

  337. a Chinese Christian boyfriend?

  338. No, I didn't.

  339. Because you end up finding,

  340. next slide,

  341. Henri.

  342. The best looking man

  343. to live on planet Earth!

  344. Yes!

  345. Praise God!

  346. God does miracles.

  347. Well,

  348. can you tell us how you met Henri?

  349. Oh,

  350. so,

  351. yeah,

  352. so when I was in

  353. this mission hospital,

  354. I met literally

  355. the words that you're using,

  356. superheroes.

  357. These American-Canadian missionaries.

  358. I thought,

  359. oh my gosh,

  360. they're like those people

  361. you read in biographies.

  362. They're like,

  363. super tough,

  364. super brave,

  365. super strong,

  366. super spiritual,

  367. super kind,

  368. super patient,

  369. like,

  370. nothing ever faces them.

  371. They're like superheroes

  372. doing these superhero feats

  373. that you can't even imagine.

  374. And I was miserable.

  375. I was miserable

  376. because I was like,

  377. look at me,

  378. like,

  379. there's no way on Earth

  380. I'm going to be a missionary.

  381. Like,

  382. I just,

  383. I just can't do even remotely

  384. what they do.

  385. And so,

  386. I started having this

  387. conversation with God

  388. that was really boring

  389. that just replayed

  390. several thousand times

  391. which consisted of God

  392. saying to me,

  393. Joyce,

  394. I want you to go to Africa

  395. to serve me.

  396. And we're like,

  397. who,

  398. me?

  399. And,

  400. no,

  401. someone else,

  402. you know,

  403. God would say,

  404. Joyce,

  405. I want you to go serve me

  406. in Africa.

  407. And I was like,

  408. you've got to be kidding.

  409. This is like the worst thing ever.

  410. Like,

  411. it's never going to work.

  412. And one day,

  413. I actually literally repeated

  414. that same conversation

  415. on a beach

  416. from eight in the morning

  417. to three in the afternoon.

  418. And then finally,

  419. at three in the afternoon,

  420. it suddenly dawned on me

  421. that God's really stubborn.

  422. He's not going to change his mind.

  423. And I either am a Christian

  424. or I'm not.

  425. It was as simple as that.

  426. I either really believe God

  427. to be who he says he is

  428. or I don't.

  429. And if I really do believe

  430. that he is the God

  431. that we read here,

  432. there's only one way

  433. to live this life

  434. and that's to follow him

  435. and trust him

  436. and obey him

  437. even when it didn't make

  438. any sense to me at all.

  439. So next to my journal

  440. where I had actually listed out

  441. to God

  442. seven big fat reasons

  443. why I should never be allowed

  444. to be a missionary,

  445. the three words

  446. lose your life.

  447. And I said yes

  448. to God's call to Africa.

  449. And I would really encourage you

  450. like someone once said to me

  451. you need to sign a contract with God.

  452. When you say yes

  453. to being a Christian,

  454. they said what you're actually signing

  455. in that contract.

  456. I know there's some lawyers here.

  457. So you say whatever,

  458. wherever,

  459. however,

  460. whenever

  461. and you just sign it

  462. because you don't know

  463. where God's going to take you.

  464. But you have,

  465. it's either you're a Christian

  466. or you're not

  467. and you say yes or not.

  468. But I do get to my point.

  469. My point is

  470. on my way back

  471. from that beach,

  472. I met the best looking man

  473. to ever walk on planet Earth.

  474. And that's how I met him.

  475. And I,

  476. he thanks God

  477. every day for me

  478. and the fact that I met him

  479. the day after I said

  480. yes to Africa

  481. because

  482. he's originally from Gabon.

  483. He's British,

  484. British Gabonese.

  485. And if I had,

  486. I think the timing

  487. was really interesting

  488. because I think

  489. if I met him first,

  490. I might have felt

  491. that I said,

  492. I will say yes to Africa

  493. because of him.

  494. But as it turned out,

  495. I can't blame him for anything.

  496. I've got to deal with God.

  497. Can you guys see

  498. where we get some of our,

  499. like actually,

  500. a few years after that

  501. when Christina and I,

  502. we'd met them,

  503. gone through university,

  504. got married,

  505. started working.

  506. I was a teacher.

  507. She was a cardiac physiologist.

  508. And it was the same thing

  509. when we felt God say,

  510. hey,

  511. quit your jobs

  512. and go into ministry.

  513. And at that point,

  514. she was pregnant with Ruben.

  515. And it was the same thing

  516. that we were saying.

  517. We're like,

  518. well,

  519. how do we do this?

  520. Why would we quit our jobs

  521. and then go here?

  522. But who's going to look

  523. after our kid?

  524. And then it became

  525. the same question.

  526. It's either you're a Christian

  527. or you're not.

  528. It's either you say yes to God

  529. and we talked about this

  530. the other day.

  531. It's pretty black and white.

  532. Either we believe God

  533. and we trust him

  534. and we'll just say yes

  535. to everything

  536. or actually we just stop

  537. going to church full stop.

  538. It was a very simple thing.

  539. And now looking back

  540. at these,

  541. I'm like,

  542. oh,

  543. I may have actually

  544. caught that from you.

  545. Here's a picture of Henri.

  546. Of course,

  547. he's an eye doctor.

  548. Next picture.

  549. So that's him.

  550. Yeah,

  551. so I think this photo

  552. is Henri operating.

  553. So he does mainly eye surgeries

  554. and I'm a family medicine

  555. by training

  556. but I've always just done things

  557. that I thought would be useful

  558. for Africa.

  559. So I've done things

  560. like infectious diseases,

  561. HIV and obstetrics,

  562. gynecology.

  563. And just the next picture

  564. of her family.

  565. So these are the three kids.

  566. Can you tell us their names?

  567. So Charissa is 19

  568. and Ezra is 16

  569. and Charissa is 14

  570. and that's the best looking man

  571. on earth again.

  572. Wow.

  573. So good.

  574. Can I tell people our calling?

  575. You can.

  576. Because our family

  577. because I think

  578. when I see it

  579. that like I just,

  580. I think God really

  581. calls us as families

  582. and not just us as individuals.

  583. So our children,

  584. our whole family's calling,

  585. you know,

  586. they're growing up now

  587. but our calling comes

  588. from Luke 10, 9

  589. that says,

  590. heal the sick

  591. and tell them

  592. the kingdom of God

  593. is near you.

  594. So for us,

  595. we are passionate

  596. about using medicine

  597. as a vehicle

  598. to bring people to Christ

  599. and the way we see ourselves

  600. is like,

  601. just like a room here

  602. where, you know,

  603. there were in the Bible

  604. where there's on the roof

  605. there were four crazy friends

  606. who lifted the ceiling off

  607. and created access

  608. to bring people to Jesus.

  609. So a lot of people

  610. would never set foot

  611. in a church

  612. or, you know,

  613. an evangelical meeting

  614. but they would come

  615. to our hospital

  616. and so we're like

  617. the crazy friends

  618. who have to do something

  619. that people don't necessarily

  620. approve of.

  621. Like, I think if I lift

  622. your roof off right now,

  623. that might challenge

  624. our friendship.

  625. But to bring people

  626. to Christ

  627. and so that's what

  628. we're really passionate about.

  629. Which is all nice to hear

  630. when we say it here

  631. in our own context.

  632. It's all fun and games

  633. until you actually

  634. have to do it.

  635. And the next slide

  636. is actually a picture

  637. of you guys

  638. at the airport.

  639. Now, you haven't talked

  640. about this picture

  641. but this reminds me

  642. of a picture that I have

  643. but tell us

  644. what this picture is.

  645. That's when they were

  646. 6, 3 and 1

  647. and we moved

  648. from the UK

  649. to the Republic of Congo

  650. so our first place

  651. was really remote

  652. and I've never been there

  653. so it was really

  654. literally like,

  655. you know,

  656. saying yes to God

  657. and not really

  658. understanding

  659. what it would involve.

  660. Like, we kind of knew

  661. but, you know,

  662. sometimes you just don't know

  663. until you're there, right?

  664. And those who have said yes

  665. and I'm looking actually

  666. at my brother here,

  667. I remember when he first

  668. said yes to God

  669. and he went to,

  670. I think it was Zambia

  671. and that first night

  672. when you were there

  673. and it was like,

  674. oh my goodness,

  675. I need to get on the plane

  676. and go home.

  677. This picture reminds me

  678. of me and my family

  679. when we were just about

  680. to fly seven years ago

  681. to Hong Kong.

  682. Now,

  683. I even have

  684. kind of just physical feelings

  685. just come up

  686. as I remember

  687. just not knowing

  688. what would be

  689. on the other side

  690. of this plane journey.

  691. Now, I've since found out

  692. that the other side

  693. of the plane journey

  694. for me

  695. is Pacific Place.

  696. Which is

  697. quite fine, thank you.

  698. But of course,

  699. you went to Congo

  700. which is a whole different place.

  701. Yeah, it's really

  702. in the middle of a rainforest.

  703. Actually,

  704. this was just the beginning

  705. of the journey.

  706. So once we got to the capital,

  707. back then,

  708. not now,

  709. if you visit us now

  710. we're not there anymore

  711. but the first place

  712. we went to

  713. was literally

  714. in the middle of a jungle

  715. where there's like

  716. no roads to there.

  717. So it's either taking a plane

  718. or going on a boat ride

  719. that would take three weeks

  720. but there's no bathroom.

  721. So we wait for the plane.

  722. And the plane,

  723. we had tickets

  724. but we had to wait 19 days.

  725. So we just arrived

  726. in this country

  727. where we knew no one

  728. and every day

  729. we'll pack up everything

  730. with the three kids,

  731. six, three and one.

  732. So like your little one

  733. just moving around

  734. and then we would go

  735. to the airport

  736. and they'll say,

  737. sorry,

  738. the plane's not flying today

  739. and we'll go home.

  740. And the next day

  741. we'll do it again

  742. and we did that

  743. for 19 days.

  744. And then finally

  745. on the last day

  746. they said,

  747. okay,

  748. you can fly today

  749. but you're not allowed

  750. any luggage.

  751. So I'm going now

  752. to this rainforest

  753. with a baby

  754. still in nappies.

  755. And I was like,

  756. no,

  757. no luggage.

  758. They said,

  759. yeah,

  760. don't worry,

  761. it'll come on the next plane.

  762. And then I did

  763. what any sane woman

  764. would do.

  765. I bursted crying

  766. at the reception

  767. and then they're like,

  768. okay,

  769. they call me white

  770. because even though

  771. I'm obviously not white

  772. but to Africans

  773. I'm white.

  774. Like,

  775. white woman crying,

  776. okay,

  777. let her have

  778. two suitcases.

  779. So we survived

  780. in this,

  781. we arrived at the place

  782. we were going to

  783. on two suitcases

  784. and of course

  785. the luggage took 28 days

  786. to arrive.

  787. but it was like Christmas

  788. after that

  789. like when we got it.

  790. Now we're heading

  791. into the territory

  792. where you're going to start

  793. being tempted

  794. to see Joyce

  795. as a superwoman

  796. and I want to keep

  797. reminding you

  798. she's just my friend.

  799. Who cried every night

  800. for the first year.

  801. Yeah.

  802. Like,

  803. I'm kind of normal.

  804. You would cry.

  805. I wouldn't say you're normal

  806. but she is

  807. just a person.

  808. We're going to

  809. share a few slides

  810. of the stuff that you do

  811. because this is

  812. really incredible.

  813. This is quite fun

  814. because I don't know

  815. what's coming up.

  816. Next slide.

  817. Tell us about what's happening here.

  818. this is Henri

  819. sharing the gospel

  820. so that's part of our calling

  821. about sharing

  822. just bringing Christ

  823. to people.

  824. Which is incredible

  825. because there is work

  826. that you do

  827. when you go out

  828. and you literally

  829. just heal the sick

  830. but your calling Luke 10

  831. is to heal the sick

  832. and of course

  833. to bring the good news

  834. of Jesus Christ to them.

  835. Yes.

  836. So that's important.

  837. Next slide.

  838. Just another one.

  839. That's the church

  840. in the forest.

  841. That is incredible.

  842. It makes us feel really good

  843. that our seats are comfortable.

  844. But he's again

  845. still sharing the gospel here.

  846. And then,

  847. of course,

  848. you've come back to Hong Kong

  849. to update a lot of us

  850. about something

  851. that's exciting.

  852. You started in the rainforest

  853. with nothing

  854. but show the next slide.

  855. You ended up now,

  856. fast forward,

  857. you've built this.

  858. Yeah.

  859. Can you tell us

  860. about what this is?

  861. This is crazy.

  862. This looks like

  863. the Avengers headquarters.

  864. Tell us about it.

  865. So,

  866. we were in this

  867. middle of nowhere

  868. for a while

  869. and then my husband

  870. went to,

  871. any of you heard

  872. of Mercy Ship?

  873. It's the biggest floating,

  874. yeah,

  875. it's the biggest floating

  876. hospital in the world

  877. used to be run

  878. by Youth of the Mission.

  879. So my husband

  880. went there

  881. to operate

  882. for about three months.

  883. He comes home

  884. and he said,

  885. Joyce,

  886. we cannot stay

  887. where we are

  888. because if we stay

  889. where it's so remote,

  890. we can only help

  891. the people

  892. in the vicinity.

  893. He said,

  894. we need to go somewhere

  895. that is more

  896. accessible to patients.

  897. And I said,

  898. no.

  899. I didn't even say,

  900. let's pray about it.

  901. I was like,

  902. no!

  903. Because it's taken us

  904. like,

  905. what,

  906. four or five years

  907. to actually start

  908. feeling human

  909. in the middle of nowhere

  910. because it was really hard.

  911. I'm talking about,

  912. you know,

  913. we only had electricity

  914. three times a week

  915. for three hours at a time.

  916. But we found a way

  917. to do it

  918. and then I was like,

  919. I don't want to go

  920. somewhere new.

  921. But then God just,

  922. I mean,

  923. honestly,

  924. if we're here,

  925. like,

  926. you know,

  927. we'll be here

  928. all day,

  929. all week

  930. just to tell you

  931. the amazing things

  932. God has done

  933. and the way

  934. he's brought us.

  935. But God showed us

  936. to go to this new place

  937. called Westo

  938. and he said,

  939. I want you to go

  940. and build a hospital

  941. and create space

  942. so that God can bring

  943. other people

  944. like yourselves

  945. to come and do

  946. what God's placed

  947. in their hearts.

  948. And then the first time,

  949. so what actually happened

  950. was my husband and I

  951. were on the same

  952. dining table

  953. that you probably

  954. would have eaten off.

  955. We prayed

  956. and we put down

  957. every single thing

  958. we know that community needs

  959. and we trust God

  960. to bring it to pass.

  961. Not just us,

  962. but like other people,

  963. generations,

  964. kiddies,

  965. to come and do.

  966. And then we took

  967. that piece of paper

  968. to an American engineer

  969. and asked him,

  970. how much land

  971. do you think

  972. we're going to need?

  973. And he said,

  974. five hectares.

  975. And then so we took it

  976. to the government

  977. and asked them

  978. if we could buy

  979. a piece of land

  980. for five hectares

  981. and they gave us

  982. a six,

  983. one for free.

  984. Some people said,

  985. why didn't they just

  986. give it to you for free?

  987. The whole lot.

  988. We're like,

  989. well,

  990. because I don't want

  991. to run into

  992. the risk of them

  993. saying I'm going

  994. to take the land

  995. back,

  996. et cetera.

  997. And then the engineer

  998. said,

  999. okay,

  1000. I'm going to calculate

  1001. for you how much

1002. we think this is going

  1003. to take.

  1004. And he said,

  1005. five million US dollars.

  1006. And I literally,

  1007. literally like this,

1008. I fell off the chair.

  1009. I was like,

  1010. no,

  1011. like I can just

  1012. about manage to do

  1013. what I could.

  1014. And honestly,

  1015. since then to see

  1016. this place happen,

  1017. it's just,

  1018. it's amazing.

  1019. And so I know

  1020. some of you here

  1021. has been with us

  1022. on this journey.

  1023. It really is nothing

1024. short of the act of God.

1025. And we say it all the time.

  1026. Sometimes like you,

1027. I think you want me

  1028. to convey the message.

  1029. Like honestly,

  1030. if you know me

  1031. a little bit better,

  1032. you will definitely know

  1033. I am far from a superhero

  1034. or anything extraordinary

  1035. about me at all.

  1036. If you see,

1037. if you look us up

  1038. at Newside Congo

  1039. or at the Samutus,

  1040. which is our surname,

  1041. and you see any,

  1042. any good in us,

1043. it's not because of us.

1044. It's in spite of us.

1045. And if you speak Cantonese,

1046. even we mess things up,

  1047. okay,

  1048. and we cause chaos,

  1049. actually.

  1050. It's like,

  1051. you know,

1052. your kids try to help

  1053. and you actually

  1054. just make things worse.

  1055. They're very helpful.

  1056. They're very helpful.

  1057. So like,

  1058. we're not,

  1059. we don't help God,

  1060. but God allows us

  1061. this amazing privilege

1062. to be like just there

1063. and let him do his crazy moves.

1064. And so we're about to move in.

1065. So you can come visit.

1066. I'm going to show you

  1067. some pictures

  1068. and what they do.

  1069. Before I do that,

  1070. doctors,

  1071. if you're a doctor here,

1072. I want you to ask yourself,

  1073. oh,

1074. what is the Lord asking of me?

  1075. If you're actually

  1076. of any profession here.

  1077. any profession.

  1078. Actually,

  1079. she'll say.

  1080. Handyman,

  1081. administrators,

1082. we have a huge children

  1083. and youth ministry

  1084. that is already,

  1085. we're already partnering

  1086. with 30 schools

1087. and we have a magazine

  1088. that has 22,000 readers.

  1089. We're looking for someone

1090. to come and bring this,

  1091. you know,

  1092. really grow this.

  1093. Like right now,

  1094. we have a chance

  1095. every year

  1096. to go into school

  1097. 90 times

  1098. to preach the gospel.

  1099. And I don't get

1100. let out of the jungle a lot,

1101. so I have to tell you,

  1102. I've got 90 times

1103. I can go into school

  1104. and tell them

  1105. about what Jesus

  1106. has done for us

1107. and what he can do

  1108. for these kids.

  1109. And I'm,

  1110. my husband and I

  1111. are unable

  1112. to go 90 times

  1113. because we're too busy

  1114. doing other things.

  1115. We've got,

  1116. right now,

  1117. our magazine reaches probably,

  1118. we probably have about

  1119. 660,000 times a year

  1120. to have the gospel

  1121. in people's homes.

  1122. And there's a hunger

  1123. for more.

1124. So I'm just telling you now,

1125. if your heart is stirring

  1126. a little bit,

  1127. don't ignore it.

  1128. Just get in touch.

  1129. We need people.

  1130. We really,

  1131. really need people.

  1132. Okay.

  1133. Quick fire round.

1134. I'm going to show you pictures.

1135. You're going to tell us

1136. one story about these pictures

1137. and we're going to go.

  1138. Next one.

1139. So tell us a little bit

  1140. about what this is.

  1141. This is the inside

  1142. of the hospital.

  1143. So everything was,

  1144. it really was like

  1145. from nothing

  1146. to something just crazy.

1147. You can go to the next one.

  1148. Next one.

1149. This is what it looks like now.

  1150. Woo!

  1151. Come on!

  1152. You guys,

1153. you've guys not been to Africa.

  1154. You don't realize

1155. how crazy this thing is.

  1156. Honestly.

1157. You guys got to come.

1158. You got to see it.

1159. And where did you get this stuff?

1160. So a lot of it

  1161. is from Hong Kong.

  1162. We physically went

  1163. and lifted these things

1164. because they're so pretty brand new

1165. but people didn't want them.

1166. Or we go to Alibaba

  1167. and pull bull,

  1168. Pang Lang Zeng.

  1169. Yes.

  1170. Next one.

  1171. There's lots of pictures.

1172. Pick one and tell us about it.

  1173. So there's like 40 visitors.

  1174. We hosted 40 visitors

  1175. to come and do

  1176. all sorts of things.

1177. And I think one of the

  1178. really special things

  1179. that we love about

  1180. our ministry is

  1181. God brings families

  1182. and young people

  1183. to come.

  1184. And God's really,

1185. the name is New Sight

1186. which is to help people

  1187. see physically and spiritually

  1188. but now we realize

1189. it's not just for people in Congo.

1190. It's for all of us.

1191. Like my husband and I,

  1192. first and foremost,

1193. our sight has been transformed

1194. to see who we really are

  1195. in Christ

1196. and who God really is.

1197. So we love having visitors.

  1198. Next one.

  1199. It's not just doctors.

  1200. Yeah, engineers and handyman

1201. and like if you come,

  1202. everybody says,

  1203. what can I do?

1204. If you know how to Google

1205. and you know how to WhatsApp

  1206. to ask for help,

  1207. then you're miles ahead

  1208. of my team

  1209. and you will come

1210. and you will train someone.

  1211. You will teach someone

1212. whatever you need to do

1213. and if you don't know

  1214. how to do something,

  1215. God will,

1216. just because you don't know

  1217. how to do something

  1218. doesn't mean that

1219. you're not going to learn.

  1220. So, you know,

  1221. I'm a doctor.

  1222. I really, honestly,

  1223. I'm trained to be a doctor.

1224. I don't know how to do anything else.

1225. So I would say probably

  1226. 97% of my time

1227. I'm trying to learn something,

  1228. do something

  1229. and so can you.

1230. So we really do need people to come.

1231. One of the special rooms

  1232. that I can imagine

  1233. I would be in.

  1234. What's here?

  1235. Yeah, yeah.

  1236. So on the top

1237. is the Pastors Resource Center.

1238. So a lot of pastors

1239. just haven't had the opportunity

  1240. to go to seminary

  1241. or even sit under

  1242. great Bible teaching.

1243. So some of this thinking

  1244. is a little skewed.

1245. So I'll give you an example.

1246. Like one of the ladies

  1247. had a tummy ache

  1248. and then she ended

  1249. with a hoarse voice

  1250. and I said,

1251. what's happened to your voice?

  1252. And she said,

1253. oh, my pastor told me

  1254. I have to pray

1255. and I have to cry louder

  1256. and louder and louder

1257. so God can hear me.

  1258. Or, you know,

  1259. they would still think

1260. that if you have like

  1261. a lot of illnesses

1262. to cast out demons, etc.

  1263. So that's why

  1264. we're so passionate

  1265. about education

  1266. and empowering

  1267. the local community.

1268. So that Pastors Resource Center,

  1269. we want to build

  1270. relationship with the pastors

1271. because they're the first people

  1272. along with which doctors

  1273. and traditional healers

  1274. people will go to

  1275. when they're sick.

1276. So if we can help them

1277. have some basic health knowledge

1278. and then they can help us

  1279. reach the community.

  1280. And it's just incredible

1281. that actually it's not just

1282. become an eye hospital now,

1283. it's actually much bigger than that.

1284. Yeah, so we're not just looking

  1285. for eye medical professionals,

  1286. we're looking for anyone

  1287. and everyone

1288. because that is the dream

  1289. that I, and I know,

1290. and I say it like this,

1291. I know some of you are called.

1292. I know some of you are called

  1293. right in this room.

  1294. I'm not just blankly,

  1295. you know, saying

1296. I know some of you are called

1297. and you just need to

  1298. get with God

1299. and decide whether or not

1300. what is more important to you.

1301. Some of you are called.

1302. You need to take that seriously

  1303. because I always,

1304. Andre and I always say

  1305. I'm pretty sure,

  1306. we're pretty sure

  1307. we're not God's first choice.

  1308. The only thing is

  1309. we said yes

  1310. and that's it.

  1311. And actually,

1312. I want to fast forward

1313. a couple of slides, Bev,

  1314. to, keep going,

  1315. keep going,

  1316. this one,

  1317. oh no, the building,

1318. the building with the nice slides,

  1319. like just,

1320. you shared about this one

1321. and I just wanted to

1322. hear you say it here and here.

  1323. I don't know what to say.

1324. So part of it is,

  1325. honestly,

1326. if you go to where we live,

1327. Africa is a big continent,

  1328. okay,

  1329. so some African countries

1330. are a lot more advanced

  1331. but where I am,

  1332. you just won't see

  1333. a building like this.

1334. So a lot of our patients

  1335. and community,

  1336. when they come,

  1337. they literally tell us,

1338. I have to pinch my cheeks,

  1339. I feel like I'm in Europe.

  1340. And then,

  1341. so for us,

  1342. it's kind of like

  1343. God showing off,

  1344. it's really like

  1345. in your face.

  1346. Like we didn't go,

1347. we didn't even go start out

  1348. wanting a ministry,

  1349. actually,

1350. like let alone build a building.

1351. Like Newset was born kind of,

  1352. for those of you

  1353. who are old enough

1354. and there's not that many,

  1355. you know,

1356. have you heard of Forrest Gump,

  1357. the movie?

  1358. Okay,

  1359. I'm like Forrest Gump.

  1360. Like I don't know

1361. what's happening half the time

  1362. and I'm like,

  1363. oh,

  1364. okay,

  1365. okay,

  1366. okay.

1367. So how it started was like,

  1368. we just thought,

  1369. we're missionaries,

1370. we're going to be somewhere

  1371. really quiet

  1372. and we wouldn't do,

  1373. you know,

  1374. any fundraising

1375. or whatnot kind of thing.

  1376. But by default,

  1377. because basically,

  1378. actually it's because

1379. we couldn't get any funding

  1380. for our project,

  1381. but we still felt

1382. God was asking us to go,

1383. that we had some friends

  1384. who just said,

  1385. hey,

  1386. look,

  1387. you know,

1388. we don't have a lot of money

  1389. but what we have,

1390. we'd like to donate to you

  1391. and we're like,

  1392. thank you.

  1393. They said,

1394. so can we have a tax receipt?

  1395. And I'm like,

1396. how do you do that?

  1397. And then they said,

1398. you need to become a charity

  1399. and we're like,

1400. how do you do that?

  1401. And then so,

  1402. they did that

  1403. and finally,

  1404. oh,

  1405. no,

1406. I know what you want me to talk about.

1407. You want me to talk about

1408. how we found the money for this?

  1409. No,

  1410. no,

  1411. no.

  1412. Oh,

  1413. Maya,

  1414. okay.

  1415. Actually,

  1416. my main thing was,

  1417. you said something

1418. where when people show up,

  1419. they pinch themselves

  1420. and they're like,

  1421. whoa,

  1422. this is like Europe.

1423. And it made me think,

  1424. well,

  1425. actually,

  1426. this for them

1427. is the glimpse of heaven

  1428. that they actually

  1429. don't get to see

1430. and this is their chance to see.

  1431. And hope.

  1432. And what's impossible

  1433. can be made possible.

1434. If you grow up in a place,

  1435. and you young people,

  1436. you wouldn't understand

  1437. just how,

  1438. you think that you,

  1439. you know,

1440. you think you can do

  1441. anything,

  1442. everything.

  1443. For people who are

  1444. from our community,

  1445. it's so hard.

  1446. You have 41% young,

  1447. youth unemployment rate.

  1448. 67% live below

  1449. the poverty line.

1450. 49% live in absolute poverty.

  1451. Like,

  1452. it's,

  1453. life is so hard.

1454. No matter how hard you try,

1455. it's so hard to break through

  1456. what,

  1457. how everybody lives.

1458. And then you see this

  1459. and say,

  1460. wow,

  1461. life can be different.

1462. And it's the same thing

1463. with how life can be different.

  1464. It's not just

  1465. the practical terms

1466. that allow you to live

  1467. and function

  1468. and flourish.

1469. It's also the spiritual need

  1470. because that place

  1471. is dark.

  1472. It's dark in a different,

  1473. the world is dark.

  1474. Everywhere.

  1475. But it's a,

  1476. it's dark in a different

1477. kind of way where they are

  1478. because people are

  1479. very suspicious

  1480. and cannot trust

  1481. other people.

1482. A lot of our patients

  1483. will come

  1484. and they wouldn't even

  1485. tell their spouses

  1486. that they are

  1487. having surgery

  1488. because they're worried

  1489. that someone will

1490. place a curse on them.

  1491. So it's,

  1492. it's a lot of bondage

  1493. and things like that.

  1494. Joyce says,

1495. some of you are called.

1496. I think you are called.

1497. And it might not be to Congo.

  1498. Yeah,

1499. it might not be to Congo.

1500. It might be to the most

  1501. radical place.

  1502. Well, actually,

1503. all of you are called.

  1504. All of us.

  1505. They are all called.

1506. Some of them to the Congo.

  1507. Yes.

  1508. Others might to be

  1509. the radical,

  1510. radically far place

  1511. called Central

  1512. or Causeway Bay.

  1513. Yeah,

  1514. yeah,

  1515. those are scary places.

  1516. There are scary places.

  1517. Yeah,

  1518. very scary.

  1519. It just,

1520. are you willing to be

  1521. that burning bush

1522. and to go into that place

1523. that God has called you to?

  1524. We've seen the building.

1525. I want to see some people.

  1526. Next slide.

  1527. Oessa,

1528. this is where it is.

  1529. Here.

  1530. Yeah,

1531. go back to the picture

  1532. of the people.

  1533. Just there.

  1534. Yeah,

1535. so these people were all blind

1536. and now they can see.

  1537. Praise God.

  1538. Can I just,

1539. can we just pause there

  1540. for a second?

  1541. Like just,

  1542. they were blind

  1543. but now they see.

1544. Like what does that even mean?

  1545. Just,

  1546. sometimes I see a blind person

  1547. just navigating

1548. the streets of Hong Kong

  1549. and I'm just,

  1550. I don't even know

  1551. what to think.

  1552. I can't compute

1553. what they're trying to do.

  1554. I mean,

  1555. I can see them.

  1556. Sometimes I still struggle

1557. to find the right place.

  1558. But they were blind

  1559. but actually,

  1560. what you said,

  1561. this is where,

1562. this is what really got me going,

  1563. okay,

1564. you need to come up

  1565. and say this

1566. because some of the stuff

  1567. that they do,

  1568. they're like,

  1569. oh yeah,

1570. we did this with this.

1571. She just said it so casually.

  1572. Oh,

  1573. they're blind

  1574. but now they see.

  1575. And actually,

  1576. it was really simple.

  1577. I said,

  1578. Joyce,

  1579. that's not simple.

  1580. That's life changing.

  1581. But to her,

  1582. on the most part,

  1583. it is.

  1584. Because why?

  1585. Because it's just a simple yes.

  1586. It's just God,

  1587. use me.

1588. I'll just do whatever it is.

  1589. You're the one who's doing it.

1590. I'm just here just to say yes.

  1591. Right?

  1592. Yes,

  1593. yes.

1594. And just keep saying yes

1595. and be a stubbornness goddess,

  1596. I think.

  1597. And pre-decide,

  1598. pre-decide,

  1599. like decide now

1600. is going to be a yes,

  1601. regardless.

  1602. One of our mentors,

  1603. he's now in his 80s

  1604. and he's,

  1605. you know,

  1606. I won't be surprised

  1607. if he gets nominated

  1608. for a Nobel Prize

1609. for his contribution to medicine

  1610. because he's amazing.

  1611. He's on these things

  1612. for river blindness

1613. and one day we were talking to him

  1614. and asking for advice

1615. and he was saying like,

  1616. oh yeah,

1617. and then I did this

  1618. and that didn't work

  1619. and I did that

  1620. and oh,

1621. that didn't go so well.

  1622. Oh,

1623. then that was a disaster.

  1624. And like sometimes

  1625. literally what you're saying

  1626. about superheroes,

1627. you just see all these

  1628. amazing things they did

1629. and you don't think about

  1630. all the setbacks

  1631. and all the things

1632. that you'd rather not remember.

  1633. And,

  1634. but it,

  1635. that's how,

  1636. how life is

  1637. and we just say,

  1638. yes,

  1639. and I think it's,

  1640. it is really dumb

1641. when I do it myself

1642. that I just think about,

1643. we're focusing on the wrong thing.

  1644. Yeah.

1645. Tell us about this little girl.

  1646. Next slide.

  1647. So,

  1648. this is Shirelle.

  1649. She's 35 years old.

1650. She started having eye problems

  1651. when she was 11

1652. and then she became completely blind

1653. by the time she was in her 30s.

  1654. So,

  1655. as a result,

  1656. her husband

1657. was no longer able to work

  1658. as a carpenter

1659. because he had to stay home now

  1660. to look after her.

  1661. So,

  1662. she felt pretty miserable

  1663. and she came to,

1664. you can take the next slide,

  1665. I think probably,

  1666. oh no,

  1667. just stay here,

  1668. stay please.

  1669. So,

1670. then we were able to operate on her

1671. and she's able to see,

1672. and she's able to see her baby,

1673. her own baby for the first time

1674. and her husband returned to work.

1675. She can also work on implantations,

  1676. like their whole lives

  1677. are completely changed

  1678. but more importantly,

1679. she said yes to Jesus.

  1680. Her whole family

  1681. and it's just,

  1682. that's what we're there to do.

  1683. Most importantly.

  1684. Thank you.

1685. We're going to hear a few more of these

1686. but my encouragement to you

  1687. is just,

1688. these are real life testimonies

  1689. about what is happening.

1690. We don't do hard things.

  1691. It's not hard.

  1692. It's very simple.

  1693. I think,

  1694. I do it anyway.

  1695. I overcomplicate things.

1696. Show us the next one.

  1697. Next slide.

  1698. Oh,

  1699. so these are like,

1700. we've got so many befores and afters

1701. of people who can see funny stories,

1702. people who have not seen

1703. their spouses for like 10,

  1704. 20 years

  1705. and get a shocker

  1706. and it's like,

  1707. oh my,

  1708. you've aged.

  1709. Next one.

1710. This is a little video.

  1711. Oh yeah.

  1712. Can you,

1713. can you hear the sound?

  1714. Oh,

1715. I don't know if we can hear the sound.

  1716. Maybe not.

  1717. Yeah.

  1718. Just talk us,

  1719. talk us through it.

  1720. So this little boy,

  1721. he was born blind.

1722. So this is the moment

1723. when he can see the world

  1724. for the first time.

  1725. Mmm.

  1726. Yeah,

  1727. he went,

  1728. mmm.

  1729. He's just,

  1730. he's so amazing.

  1731. I,

  1732. I,

  1733. I always watch the,

1734. I've seen this thousands of times

1735. but every time I see it,

  1736. it's just,

  1737. it's just amazing

  1738. like,

1739. that we get to do this.

1740. Can you just tell us

  1741. the medical condition?

1742. Why was he born blind?

  1743. He had cataracts.

  1744. That was it?

  1745. That was it,

  1746. yeah.

  1747. In Hong Kong,

1748. he would have been operated earlier.

1749. But because of where he is?

  1750. Yeah,

  1751. because there's,

  1752. there's not been,

1753. we've got some of these kids

  1754. who were born blind

1755. who are now in university.

  1756. so we're,

  1757. it's just,

  1758. I can't believe like,

1759. we just do what we can

  1760. and yeah,

  1761. it's simple.

  1762. Incredible,

  1763. incredible.

  1764. Next slide.

  1765. And that's the photos

  1766. of our consultation.

1767. I think you can keep,

  1768. okay,

  1769. there's a,

  1770. before you,

1771. before you go to the next slide,

  1772. if anyone who is,

1773. is worried about gory pictures,

  1774. then look away

  1775. for the next bit.

1776. It's just another quick slide.

  1777. Next one,

  1778. look away.

  1779. This one,

  1780. this is okay.

  1781. Then you,

1782. then the next bit will be bad.

  1783. So,

  1784. she's a little girl

1785. who was playing in the forest

1786. when she had an eye injury

  1787. and so,

1788. because she lived in the forest

1789. and her parents didn't have

  1790. the financial means

1791. to take her to the town,

1792. they put sugar on her eye

  1793. to try help it

  1794. and people are like,

  1795. what did they think

  1796. the sugar will help?

  1797. And I think,

  1798. it's not necessarily

1799. they thought that the sugar

  1800. would help but like,

1801. you just feel so helpless,

1802. you've got to do something.

  1803. So she,

1804. that injury was like three,

1805. and then three weeks later,

1806. so you can show the next one

1807. but if you don't like seeing gory.

  1808. Look away,

  1809. if you don't want,

  1810. yeah.

1811. So that was what she looked like

1812. and it's not just gory,

  1813. we were really worried

  1814. because by then

1815. she was already in septic shock,

  1816. she was,

1817. looked like she was developing

  1818. signs of meningitis

1819. and you can show the next slide please

  1820. and just with some

  1821. simple antibiotics

  1822. and simple wound care,

1823. we were able to save her sight

  1824. and her life.

  1825. Simple yeses.

  1826. Simple.

  1827. Simple yeses.

  1828. That's all it is

1829. and I think it breaks my heart

1830. when we sit here and go,

  1831. oh God,

1832. what do you want me to do?

1833. It's going to be something

  1834. incredible and big

  1835. and it's just,

1836. oh but I'm not ready.

  1837. Just simple yeses.

  1838. Can you just stick

  1839. to the simple yeses?

  1840. Next slide.

  1841. I want to hear

  1842. about your daughter

  1843. and the glasses

1844. because one of the big problems is...

  1845. Yeah,

1846. so before we went there,

  1847. if you,

  1848. who wears glasses here?

1849. Quite a few of you.

1850. So how long does it take you

  1851. on average

1852. to get your glasses back

1853. if you need a new pair?

  1854. A few days?

  1855. Something like that?

  1856. So back in Congo,

1857. if you need a pair of glasses,

1858. you would need to send

  1859. the prescription

  1860. to another country

1861. and then they'll send it back.

  1862. So you can take

  1863. the next slide please.

  1864. I think,

  1865. I'm guessing.

  1866. Maybe that's your daughter.

  1867. Oh yeah,

  1868. yeah,

  1869. yeah,

  1870. there.

  1871. So what's her name?

  1872. Rosette,

  1873. Rosette,

  1874. Rosette's 11

1875. and her mom saved up

  1876. for a few years.

  1877. Can you imagine

1878. waiting for a few years?

  1879. 600多 times.

  1880. Okay,

  1881. pretty bad.

  1882. So she's,

  1883. her mom saved up

  1884. for a few years

  1885. and then borrowed money

  1886. from the older brother

1887. just so that they could get

  1888. this pair of glasses

  1889. for her

  1890. from abroad.

1891. And after a few years,

  1892. the prescription was wrong

1893. and then can you see

  1894. what's wrong with it?

1895. Can you see what's wrong

  1896. with this?

1897. Can you see it's all

  1898. scratched?

1899. So it would be hard

  1900. to see

  1901. and if you look

  1902. on the bottom,

1903. can you see the difference

  1904. between those two pairs

  1905. of glasses?

  1906. Anyone can see

  1907. what's the difference

  1908. between those two pairs

  1909. of glasses?

  1910. There's no,

  1911. yeah,

  1912. that's right,

  1913. there's no arms

  1914. to those glasses

  1915. so she's literally

  1916. going to school

  1917. like this

  1918. and so

  1919. our daughter,

  1920. that's our oldest one,

  1921. she was 17 then,

  1922. she learned

  1923. from an optician

  1924. chain here

  1925. in Hong Kong

  1926. how to make

  1927. glasses

1928. and then she went back

  1929. and then she wrote

  1930. a training manual

  1931. and then

  1932. in French

  1933. because that's the language

  1934. we use there

  1935. and if you're worried

  1936. like,

  1937. I don't speak French,

  1938. well,

  1939. one,

  1940. you can learn

  1941. and two,

  1942. there are these things

  1943. called apps

  1944. and AI

1945. and they really help you

  1946. but my daughter

  1947. wrote this manual

  1948. in French

  1949. and she trained

  1950. the whole team

  1951. so under Hong Kong

  1952. $100

1953. we were able to help

  1954. this little girl

  1955. so like I said,

  1956. it's simple

  1957. we don't do things

  1958. that are like

  1959. rocket science

  1960. but just simple

  1961. simple

  1962. of course

  1963. you say simple now

1964. and you haven't got time

  1965. to tell people

  1966. all the stories

  1967. about how you got

  1968. to this point

  1969. but you did,

1970. I want to finish here

  1971. because you actually

  1972. also wrote

  1973. the 10 things

  1974. that you've learnt

  1975. since doing

  1976. all of this stuff

  1977. and as I looked

  1978. at that list

  1979. I was like

1980. I wish we had time

  1981. to go through

  1982. all of them

  1983. but we don't

  1984. but there's a few

  1985. that I'm like

  1986. we can't finish

  1987. so if we're going

  1988. to go fast forward

  1989. to slide 35

  1990. it's the orange

  1991. type slide

  1992. there we go

1993. tell us about this one

1994. how did you get here?

  1995. yeah so we were

  1996. in the first

  1997. mission hospital

  1998. we were in

  1999. we loved it

  2000. like we were

2001. part of an amazing team

  2002. and then every year

2003. as part of that team

  2004. we would see

  2005. like a thousand people

  2006. come to Christ

  2007. and you know

  2008. things were just

  2009. great

  2010. right

  2011. we felt like

  2012. we were very successful

  2013. and then God

  2014. asked us to leave

  2015. not even telling us

  2016. what we were going

  2017. to do next

  2018. and that was when

  2019. it dawned on us

  2020. like God's really

  2021. not that interested

  2022. in our so-called success

  2023. but all he asked

  2024. is our obedience

  2025. and we

  2026. I don't know about you

2027. but like I take comfort

  2028. in outcomes

2029. like I want to make sure

  2030. that it's worth

  2031. you know

  2032. it's worth the effort

  2033. but God doesn't

2034. doesn't see things like that

2035. and he really is just

  2036. after obedience

  2037. and there's another quote

  2038. that you quote

2039. from one of my favourite authors

  2040. which is this

  2041. oh yeah

  2042. read him

2043. if you get his book

  2044. I think I've read

  2045. his devotional

  2046. five, six times

  2047. with Henri

  2048. together

2049. so you want me to read this

2050. so if we obey God

  2051. it's going to cost

  2052. other people more

  2053. than it costs us

  2054. and that is where

  2055. the thing comes in

  2056. is it still

  2057. yeah

  2058. so this is about

  2059. like

  2060. you know

  2061. I'm

  2062. we've got three kids

  2063. I'm

  2064. I'm brought up

  2065. in Hong Kong

  2066. where all my

  2067. fellow classmates

  2068. are tiger moms

  2069. all of them

  2070. if they have kids

  2071. and

  2072. of course

  2073. I

  2074. and I had to

  2075. homeschool them

  2076. while working

  2077. and

  2078. there's no

  2079. back then

  2080. there were like

  2081. no internet

  2082. or anything like that

  2083. it wasn't

2084. it was just really tough

  2085. and then

  2086. so it was always

  2087. just concerned

  2088. about what

  2089. what more

  2090. it would

  2091. how much more

  2092. it would cost them

  2093. than me

2094. and I'm an only child

  2095. so it's hard to

  2096. accept

  2097. that my parents

  2098. are getting older

  2099. and how

  2100. how can I

  2101. we not be

  2102. near them

  2103. but then God

  2104. really showed us

  2105. that

  2106. and I

2107. I said this to God

  2108. before I left

2109. and for the first time

  2110. I said God

  2111. you said you'll meet

  2112. all my needs

2113. so one of my needs

  2114. is that the needs

  2115. of my parents

  2116. and our kids

2117. will need to be met

  2118. and so we just

  2119. just trusted God

  2120. throughout

  2121. and we've seen

  2122. so many stories

  2123. of how God's

  2124. really

  2125. met the needs

  2126. of my parents

  2127. and my kids

  2128. it's still hard

  2129. like there's no

  2130. doubt about it

  2131. but like

  2132. do we have time

  2133. for the violin story

  2134. or no time

  2135. have you heard

2136. you don't know the story

2137. oh you need to hear

  2138. the violin story

  2139. so my daughter

  2140. was two

  2141. when she first set

  2142. eyes on a violin

  2143. in the states

  2144. and she said

  2145. mommy I'm going to

  2146. want to learn it

  2147. and I thought

  2148. she's going to

  2149. forget it

  2150. and then she said

  2151. throughout

  2152. you know

  2153. from age of two

  2154. to six

  2155. regularly she'll say

  2156. I want to learn

  2157. the violin

  2158. and the tiger mom

2159. in me would be like

  2160. she's supposed

  2161. to be a prodigy

  2162. and now she's

  2163. in the forest

  2164. where there's

  2165. no music teacher

  2166. she's never

  2167. going to learn

  2168. fulfill her potential

2169. and then I would say

  2170. how about

  2171. how about the recorder

  2172. and she's like

2173. I can learn the recorder

  2174. but I really want

  2175. to learn violin

  2176. how about

  2177. I say how about

2178. I teach you the pianos

2179. but I want to learn

  2180. the violin

  2181. and then I said

  2182. why don't you pray

  2183. big mistake

  2184. because then she

  2185. started praying

  2186. like every few nights

2187. that God will let her

  2188. learn the violin

  2189. and I remember

  2190. like even now

  2191. remembering

2192. I can feel the tears

  2193. because I remember

  2194. seeing her

  2195. under that mosquito net

  2196. asking God

  2197. to let her

  2198. play the violin

  2199. something that I would

  2200. have not

  2201. beaten I lead

2202. if I were in Hong Kong

  2203. and

  2204. it was hard

  2205. just seeing her cry

  2206. and just thinking

  2207. what has this

  2208. cost her

  2209. what have I done

  2210. to my kids

  2211. and then

  2212. when she was

  2213. seven years old

  2214. an American volunteer

  2215. who's a nurse

  2216. she came

  2217. and brought

  2218. my daughter

  2219. a violin

  2220. she was a Suzuki

  2221. violin teacher

  2222. and taught my daughter

2223. how to play the violin

2224. and then when she was

  2225. 11

  2226. she won

  2227. a scholarship

2228. to go to the States

  2229. twice

  2230. to learn the violin

  2231. and eventually

  2232. it's through her

  2233. academics

  2234. and her violin

  2235. that she got

  2236. a full scholarship

  2237. to the UK

  2238. and I helped

  2239. like God

  2240. out of the billions

2241. of people in the world

  2242. that God

  2243. would listen

  2244. to the prayer

  2245. of a little girl

  2246. under a mosquito net

  2247. and now

  2248. I see her play

  2249. she worships God

  2250. with it

  2251. and I'm just like

  2252. God

  2253. okay

  2254. I can't argue

  2255. with you

  2256. like you're God

  2257. you're amazing

  2258. and I think

  2259. that brings tears

  2260. for me

  2261. because it reminds me

  2262. again

  2263. called to different places

  2264. said different sacrifices

  2265. yes

2266. but one of the biggest

  2267. things for us

  2268. is wait

  2269. we count the cost

  2270. we think we do

  2271. yes

  2272. but

  2273. but then there's

  2274. other people involved

  2275. and yes

  2276. I know Christina

  2277. we live that reality

  2278. also

  2279. there's this

  2280. there's this

  2281. letter that

2282. I'm going to show you

  2283. that

  2284. oh

  2285. yeah

  2286. that's Charissa too

2287. so now she was six

2288. and so when she was six

  2289. she wrote this letter

  2290. and honestly

  2291. as a parent

2292. if I read this letter

2293. I think it would break me

  2294. I think I would

  2295. retreat

  2296. I think I would

2297. so tell me what you did

2298. when you read this letter

  2299. I don't remember

  2300. what I did

2301. but I read this letter

  2302. so it's basically

  2303. about how she says

2304. I want to go back to England

  2305. for several reasons

2306. like she misses her family

  2307. she misses her friends

  2308. and she said

2309. she hates the mosquito bites

  2310. because like

  2311. it was terrible

  2312. like we had

2313. we tried every single thing

  2314. under the sun

  2315. long sleeves

  2316. you know

  2317. everything

2318. but she was getting these scars

2319. and she really didn't like it

  2320. but at the end

  2321. she said

  2322. in Jesus' name

  2323. but I will go

  2324. P.S.

  2325. I will go

2326. where you want me to go

  2327. because I trust you

  2328. she was six

  2329. and I

  2330. I think

  2331. I think I knew

  2332. that

  2333. I can't really remember

  2334. it's a long time ago

  2335. she's 19 now

  2336. but I do

2337. every time I see this

  2338. I do remember

2339. okay what do I really

  2340. really

  2341. really

  2342. want for my kids

2343. and there's only one thing

  2344. I really

  2345. really

  2346. really want

  2347. for my kids

  2348. is that they know

  2349. who God is

  2350. and I think

  2351. if

  2352. if I

  2353. I can give them

  2354. everything

2355. and I want to give them

  2356. everything

2357. but it will mean nothing

  2358. if they don't know

  2359. who God really is

  2360. and so for me

  2361. I'm like

  2362. okay

  2363. yeah

  2364. okay

  2365. so I

  2366. I like

  2367. I like

  2368. calculating pros and cons

2369. and all that kind of stuff

  2370. but like honestly

  2371. if

  2372. if it's not a yes

  2373. and not a full-hearted

  2374. yes to God

  2375. I

  2376. I'd rather not live

  2377. really

  2378. like there's no

  2379. there's no point

  2380. really

  2381. and this is you

  2382. having done everything

  2383. that you're doing

2384. you have to be honest

  2385. with yourself

  2386. and asking yourself

  2387. is this what I

  2388. really

  2389. really

  2390. really

  2391. I don't know anything

  2392. I don't really know anything

2393. and I think a lot of things are

  2394. I think I understand something

  2395. but they're not real

2396. the only truth is that

2397. I know who God is

  2398. I know

  2399. I'm absolutely

2400. sometimes the kids ask me things

  2401. I'm like

  2402. I don't know

2403. but all I know is

2404. God is who he says he is

2405. and he will always do

2406. what he says he will do

  2407. that's it

  2408. full stop

  2409. it's black and white

  2410. yeah

  2411. it's simple

2412. but we complicated so many

  2413. so much right

  2414. we're like

  2415. well

2416. what do I really want from it

  2417. because well I actually

2418. I want them to be healthy

2419. well I want them to study well

  2420. I want them to

  2421. you would put conditions

2422. there's so many other things

  2423. is it on there

  2424. the next

  2425. no

  2426. no I don't think it is

  2427. go read it

  2428. but it's basically say

2429. the gospel chamber is going on

  2430. and say

  2431. be very careful

  2432. what you will allow

2433. and what you won't allow God to do

2434. like you can touch this

  2435. but not that

  2436. yeah

2437. hey we'll have one final one

2438. if I skip two slides

2439. to the next green one

  2440. this one

  2441. oh yeah

2442. oh actually there's two more things

2443. start by doing what is necessary

  2444. then what is possible

2445. and suddenly you are doing

  2446. the impossible

2447. honestly when I talk about

  2448. saying yes to God

  2449. I use her

  2450. case

  2451. as the joke

  2452. hey

2453. God's not going to call you to Africa

2454. to take your whole family

  2455. of three kids

  2456. six three and one

  2457. to go to Africa

  2458. and live there

  2459. that's usually what I say

  2460. hey don't worry

  2461. it could be Admiralty

  2462. but then I'm like

2463. now sat in front of us

  2464. is someone who

  2465. did all of that

  2466. but she kept saying

2467. it's just really simple stuff

  2468. that we do

  2469. it's really easy

  2470. it's simple

  2471. it's not that hard

  2472. it's not that complicated

  2473. even though we know

2474. how hard it really is

2475. for us to say yes to God

2476. even in the simplest things

  2477. but this quote

  2478. just reminded me

  2479. it really is just

  2480. doing what is necessary

  2481. and keeping it simple

2482. and you finish with this quote

  2483. or your final lesson

  2484. that you learned

  2485. number ten

  2486. the final one

  2487. the secret

  2488. how do you do

  2489. what you do

  2490. next slide

  2491. this one

  2492. tell us about this

  2493. yeah

  2494. so

2495. when I first met Henri

  2496. so we had that

  2497. crazy fall in love

  2498. moment

  2499. but then we had

  2500. four years

  2501. where we were apart

  2502. and back then

  2503. there was like

  2504. no phones

  2505. or internet

  2506. or anything like that

2507. so he would have to

  2508. travel on bumpy roads

  2509. for three hours

  2510. one way

  2511. three hours back

  2512. to go under this

  2513. particular tree

2514. to hope for a signal

  2515. to call me

  2516. so the phone calls

  2517. were astronomical

  2518. and so many times

  2519. we literally would

  2520. redial 20 times

2521. just to talk for a minute

2522. and they'll get cut again

  2523. and it was hard

  2524. but we didn't mind

  2525. because we're in love

  2526. and I think when

  2527. we're in love

  2528. you know

  2529. we suddenly

  2530. like

  2531. nothing is too difficult

  2532. right

  2533. suddenly

  2534. you don't mind

  2535. staying up all night

  2536. to talk

  2537. you know

  2538. when you're in love

  2539. it's like

  2540. even if you

  2541. have to drop

  2542. that person off

  2543. and he lives

  2544. on the other side

  2545. of town

  2546. opposite to

  2547. which direction

  2548. you're going

  2549. you know

  2550. just nothing

  2551. is too inconvenient

  2552. nothing's too annoying

  2553. nothing's too frustrating

2554. and I've come to realize

  2555. that for me

  2556. the secret

  2557. of doing

  2558. what God says

  2559. to you know

  2560. God in the Bible

2561. is to do the impossible

  2562. it's like

  2563. how

  2564. how

  2565. I'm very practical

  2566. it's like

  2567. how

  2568. how

  2569. I want to know

  2570. how

  2571. and I realized

  2572. that the only way

  2573. to overcome

  2574. my impossible heart

2575. is to fall in love

  2576. with God

  2577. daily

  2578. again and again

  2579. again

  2580. because when we

2581. when we fall in love

  2582. we suddenly

  2583. become these

  2584. actually now

  2585. we're these super

  2586. beings

  2587. where we are

  2588. beyond ourselves

  2589. and we are

  2590. somehow able

  2591. to step outside

  2592. of our

  2593. comfort normal zone

  2594. and bravely face

  2595. the unknown

2596. and when we're in love

  2597. we

  2598. you know

  2599. just

  2600. we suddenly

  2601. can get through

  2602. anything

  2603. and everything

  2604. because you're

  2605. you've got this

  2606. supercharged

  2607. power

  2608. and I think

  2609. it's

  2610. Joel

  2611. who was

  2612. in missions

  2613. for about 70 years

  2614. I paraphrase

  2615. but he says

  2616. something like

  2617. the passion

  2618. for souls

  2619. grows out

  2620. of a passion

  2621. for Christ

  2622. and the passion

  2623. for missions

  2624. builds

  2625. on a passion

  2626. for Christ

  2627. and the greatest

  2628. danger

  2629. to a Christian

  2630. in whatever role

  2631. is a lack

  2632. of passion

  2633. for Christ

  2634. and he said

  2635. the most effective

  2636. way

  2637. for personal renewal

  2638. is

  2639. to have

  2640. a passion

  2641. for Christ

  2642. yeah

  2643. pop twist

  2644. coming up

  2645. I just started

  2646. this by saying

  2647. hey

  2648. she's not a superhero

  2649. and she isn't

2650. I'm going to twist it

  2651. now and go

  2652. what if we all

  2653. are

  2654. what if we all

  2655. did operate

  2656. in the supernatural

  2657. where we weren't

  2658. afraid

  2659. because God

  2660. is for us

  2661. so none

  2662. can be

  2663. against us

  2664. I want to

  2665. ask you to share

  2666. one final story

  2667. that's come

  2668. you can use

  2669. whatever language

  2670. that is appropriate

  2671. for the kids here

  2672. but

  2673. in this

  2674. Henri

  2675. was taken away

  2676. by some bad people

2677. and from what I remember

  2678. you have been told

  2679. there was

  2680. no fear

2681. are you able to share

  2682. a little bit

  2683. of what that is

  2684. yeah

  2685. so

  2686. honestly

  2687. where we live

  2688. in general

  2689. is very safe

  2690. I always tell people

  2691. it's safer

  2692. definitely

  2693. than San Francisco

  2694. so I feel

  2695. very safe

  2696. but I think

  2697. God sometimes

  2698. allows you

  2699. I think God

  2700. really allowed

  2701. my husband

  2702. to go through

  2703. this very

  2704. very unusual

  2705. thing

  2706. to really

  2707. take us

  2708. to a new place

  2709. so it was one

  2710. Friday afternoon

  2711. and he was

  2712. pretty tired

  2713. so he decided

  2714. and he wanted

  2715. to go back

  2716. to the clinic

  2717. to work

  2718. and this just

  2719. gives you

  2720. an insight

  2721. into just

  2722. honestly

  2723. we work

  2724. I would say

  2725. I have to say

  2726. this

  2727. one of my

  2728. other mentors

  2729. told us

  2730. when I was

  2731. a medical student

  2732. he said

  2733. Joyce

  2734. I expect

  2735. that God

  2736. expects

  2737. us Christians

  2738. to work

  2739. harder

  2740. than anybody

  2741. else

  2742. because we've

  2743. been given

  2744. the most important

  2745. task on earth

  2746. so we work

  2747. really hard

  2748. like I say

  2749. it's easy

  2750. but I'm also

  2751. telling you

  2752. I won't

  2753. sugar coat it

  2754. it is hard

  2755. it's easy

  2756. but it's also

  2757. hard

  2758. it becomes

  2759. easier

  2760. as you say

  2761. yes

  2762. so my husband

  2763. was working

  2764. really hard

  2765. and he

  2766. finished the

  2767. whole day

  2768. of surgery

  2769. but he had

  2770. to go back

  2771. now to set

  2772. up the

  2773. equipment

  2774. because we

  2775. have no

  2776. technician

  2777. so you

  2778. know

  2779. and you're

  2780. like

  2781. is he a

  2782. technician

  2783. no

  2784. but he

  2785. just had

  2786. to do

  2787. it

  2788. you just

  2789. do

  2790. what is

  2791. necessary

  2792. that's

  2793. the bit

  2794. about what

  2795. is necessary

  2796. but he

  2797. was so

  2798. tired

  2799. he decided

  2800. not to

  2801. drive

  2802. so he

  2803. got into

  2804. a taxi

  2805. where locally

  2806. the taxis

  2807. usually are

  2808. shared

  2809. among

  2810. other passengers

  2811. so he

  2812. got in

  2813. and the

  2814. driver

  2815. said

  2816. I'm

  2817. going to

  2818. drop the

  2819. other two

  2820. passengers

  2821. off first

  2822. and my

  2823. husband

  2824. said

  2825. sure

  2826. no

  2827. problem

  2828. and as

  2829. they

  2830. started

  2831. driving

  2832. they

  2833. just

  2834. went

  2835. all over

  2836. and they

  2837. started

  2838. going to

  2839. the border

  2840. of the

  2841. town

  2842. and my

  2843. husband

  2844. was like

  2845. where on

  2846. earth

  2847. are you

  2848. taking

  2849. me

  2850. and he's

  2851. like

  2852. oh no

  2853. no

  2854. don't

  2855. worry

  2856. just a

  2857. little

  2858. bit

  2859. further

  2860. and my

  2861. husband

  2862. said

  2863. no

  2864. look

  2865. I'll

  2866. just

  2867. pay

  2868. you

  2869. so let

  2870. let me

  2871. get

  2872. out

  2873. because

  2874. I need

  2875. to get

  2876. back

  2877. to town

  2878. and at

  2879. that

  2880. they said

  2881. if you

  2882. say another

  2883. word

  2884. we'll

  2885. kill you

  2886. so my

  2887. husband

  2888. now knew

  2889. okay

  2890. something's

  2891. really

  2892. wrong

  2893. they drove

  2894. further

  2895. and further

  2896. out of town

  2897. they finally

  2898. reached

  2899. this roundabout

  2900. where my

  2901. husband

  2902. recognized

  2903. and now

  2904. he knew

  2905. he was

  2906. really far

  2907. away from

  2908. where we

  2909. live

  2910. and one

  2911. of the

  2912. passengers

  2913. turned around

  2914. to him

  2915. and said

  2916. are you

  2917. the eye

  2918. surgeon

  2919. and he

  2920. said yes

  2921. and at

  2922. that

  2923. the people

  2924. in the

  2925. car

  2926. started

  2927. arguing

  2928. in a

  2929. different

  2930. dialect

  2931. so they're

  2932. not from

  2933. Congo

  2934. and my

  2935. husband

  2936. didn't

  2937. really

  2938. know

  2939. what

  2940. they

  2941. were

  2942. saying

  2943. but he

  2944. knew

  2945. they

  2946. were

  2947. arguing

  2948. about

  2949. what

  2950. to do

  2951. with

  2952. him

  2953. and while

  2954. they were

  2955. busy

  2956. arguing

  2957. he sneakily

  2958. threw

  2959. his iPhone

  2960. out from

  2961. the car

  2962. window

  2963. the taxi

  2964. window

  2965. hoping

  2966. that it

  2967. become

  2968. some

  2969. kind

  2970. of

  2971. clue

  2972. as

  2973. to

  2974. a

  2975. track

  2976. for

  2977. people

  2978. to

  2979. find

  2980. him

  2981. They're

  2982. now

  2983. three

  2984. hours

  2985. in

  2986. this

  2987. car

  2988. and

  2989. they're

  2990. now

  2991. into

  2992. the

  2993. forest

  2994. and

  2995. it's

  2996. dark

  2997. if

  2998. you've

  2999. been

  3000. to

  3001. rainforest

  3002. in

  3003. Africa

  3004. you

  3005. really

  3006. it's

  3007. dark

  3008. you can't

  3009. even see

  3010. your own

  3011. five

  3012. fingers

  3013. it's

  3014. that

  3015. pitch

  3016. dark

  3017. and they

  3018. suddenly

  3019. stopped

  3020. the car

  3021. and they

  3022. asked my

  3023. husband

  3024. to get

  3025. out

  3026. and he

  3027. told me

  3028. he's

  3029. the bravest

  3030. man I

  3031. know

  3032. and he

  3033. said

  3034. that was

  3035. the scariest

  3036. moment

  3037. in his

  3038. life

  3039. because

  3040. he knew

  3041. somehow

  3042. they were

  3043. after

  3044. his

  3045. life

  3046. and

  3047. then

  3048. so

  3049. they said

  3050. he got

  3051. out

  3052. and he

  3053. said

  3054. okay

  3055. this is

  3056. it

  3057. God

  3058. you're

  3059. going to

  3060. take

  3061. me

  3062. home

  3063. and

  3064. to

  3065. his

  3066. surprise

  3067. they

  3068. let

  3069. him

  3070. go

  3071. they

  3072. said

  3073. okay

  3074. you

  3075. go

  3076. today

  3077. but we

  3078. know

  3079. who

  3080. you

  3081. are

  3082. where

  3083. you

  3084. live

  3085. who

  3086. your

  3087. family

  3088. are

  3089. so

  3090. if

  3091. you

  3092. report

  3093. us

  3094. there'll

  3095. be

  3096. repercussions

  3097. but you

  3098. go

  3099. and

  3100. then

  3101. they

  3102. just

  3103. sped

  3104. off

  3105. into

  3106. the

  3107. night

  3108. so

  3109. now

  3110. my

  3111. husband

  3112. obviously

  3113. relieved

  3114. he's

  3115. still

  3116. alive

  3117. he

  3118. was

  3119. he

  3120. thought

  3121. that

  3122. someone

  3123. he's

  3124. paranoid

  3125. someone's

  3126. still

  3127. going to

  3128. come

  3129. reach

  3130. him

  3131. now

  3132. he

  3133. didn't

  3134. know

  3135. where

  3136. he

  3137. was

  3138. or

  3139. which

  3140. direction

  3141. to

  3142. go

  3143. because

  3144. he

  3145. was

  3146. left

  3147. in the

  3148. middle

  3149. of

  3150. jungle

  3151. I

  3152. don't

  3153. know

  3154. what

  3155. you

  3156. would

  3157. have

  3158. done

  3159. but

  3160. he

  3161. just

  3162. said

  3163. okay

  3164. I'm

  3165. just

  3166. going

  3167. to

  3168. start

  3169. walking

  3170. anyway

  3171. and

  3172. as

  3173. he

  3174. walked

  3175. he

  3176. said

  3177. he

  3178. kept

  3179. looking

  3180. back

  3181. thinking

  3182. someone's

  3183. going to

  3184. jump

  3185. on

  3186. him

  3187. or

  3188. something

  3189. he

  3190. said

  3191. there

  3192. was

  3193. no

  3194. room

  3195. to

  3196. worry

  3197. about

  3198. gorillas

  3199. snakes

  3200. scorpions

  3201. anything

  3202. like

  3203. that

  3204. and

  3205. he

  3206. said

  3207. this

  3208. is

  3209. like

  3210. he

  3211. was

  3212. like

  3213. okay

  3214. this

  3215. is

  3216. what

  3217. walking

  3218. by

  3219. faith

  3220. means

  3221. and

  3222. that

  3223. roundabout

  3224. that

  3225. he

  3226. recognized

  3227. and

  3228. when

  3229. he

  3230. got

  3231. there

  3232. he

  3233. said

  3234. I'm

  3235. going

  3236. to

  3237. try

  3238. to

  3239. find

  3240. my

  3241. phone

  3242. so

  3243. he

  3244. used

  3245. his

  3246. foot

  3247. and

  3248. he

  3249. was

  3250. like

  3251. he

  3252. found

  3253. his

  3254. phone

  3255. even

  3256. the

  3257. screen

  3258. protector

  3259. was

  3260. still

  3261. on

  3262. he

  3263. turned

  3264. it

  3265. on

  3266. 1%

  3267. battery

  3268. and

  3269. there's

  3270. no

  3271. signal

  3272. because

  3273. it's

  3274. in

  3275. the

  3276. jungle

  3277. so

  3278. he

  3279. said

  3280. I'm

  3281. going

  3282. to

  3283. turn

  3284. off

  3285. but

  3286. now

  3287. he

  3288. knew

  3289. where

  3290. he

  3291. was

  3292. and

  3293. he

  3294. then

  3295. everyone

  3296. was

  3297. looking

  3298. for

  3299. him

  3300. where

  3301. on

  3302. earth

  3303. was

  3304. he

  3305. but

  3306. he

  3307. got

  3308. home

  3309. safely

  3310. and

  3311. I

  3312. was

  3313. like

  3314. who

  3315. gets

  3316. kidnapped

  3317. and

  3318. still

  3319. has

  3320. his

  3321. Apple

  3322. watch

  3323. his

  3324. iPhone

  3325. and

  3326. wallet

  3327. everything

  3328. intact

  3329. he

  3330. didn't

  3331. lose

  3332. any

  3333. hair

  3334. and

  3335. that's

  3336. when

  3337. we

  3338. really

  3339. know

  3340. God

  3341. really

  3342. is

  3343. faithful

  3344. and

  3345. I

  3346. don't

  3347. know

  3348. if

  3349. I

  3350. should

  3351. say

  3352. why

  3353. he

  3354. got

  3355. kidnapped

  3356. you

  3357. can

  3358. tell

  3359. us

  3360. what

  3361. he's

  3362. !

  3363. now

  3364. !

  3365. Yes!

  3366. If you

  3367. want to

  3368. find out

  3369. more

  3370. you're

  3371. just

  3372. going to

  3373. get

  3374. in

  3375. touch

  3376. with

  3377. us

  3378. because

  3379. now

  3380. I've

  3381. got

  3382. half

  3383. a

  3384. story

  3385. hanging

  3386. his

  3387. immediate

  3388. reaction

  3389. to that

  3390. was

  3391. my

  3392. family

  3393. is

  3394. going

  3395. to

  3396. leave

  3397. this

  3398. place

  3399. because

  3400. it's

  3401. so

  3402. dark

  3403. they

  3404. were

  3405. not

  3406. after

  3407. money

  3408. they

  3409. were

  3410. after

  3411. something

  3412. else

  3413. so

  3414. I'm

  3415. not

  3416. just

  3417. saying

  3418. it

  3419. because

  3420. that

  3421. was

  3422. his

  3423. first

  3424. reaction

  3425. but

  3426. then

  3427. God

  3428. said

  3429. to

  3430. him

  3431. reminded

  3432. him

  3433. about

  3434. this

  3435. worship

  3436. song

  3437. that

  3438. actually

  3439. redefined

  3440. why

  3441. we're

  3442. there

  3443. now

  3444. we

  3445. know

  3446. it

  3447. is

  3448. because

  3449. it's

  3450. so

  3451. spiritually

  3452. dark

  3453. there

  3454. that's

  3455. precisely

  3456. why

  3457. we

  3458. have

  3459. to

  3460. be

  3461. there

  3462. it's

  3463. because

  3464. people

  3465. don't

  3466. want

  3467. to

  3468. be

  3469. there

  3470. that's

  3471. precisely

  3472. the

  3473. reason

  3474. why

  3475. we

  3476. need

  3477. to

  3478. be

  3479. there

  3480. after

  3481. this

  3482. incident

  3483. he

  3484. went

  3485. back

  3486. to

  3487. the

  3488. forest

  3489. one

  3490. Saturday

  3491. on

  3492. his

  3493. bike

  3494. and

  3495. he

  3496. literally

  3497. faced

  3498. his

  3499. fears

  3500. have

  3501. you

  3502. ever

  3503. seen

  3504. people

  3505. who

  3506. give

  3507. testimonies

  3508. after

  3509. they've

  3510. been

  3511. to

  3512. a

  3513. near

  3514. death

  3515. experience

  3516. now

  3517. there's

  3518. clarity

  3519. all that

  3520. stuff

  3521. we saw

  3522. before

  3523. now

  3524. we can

  3525. see

  3526. clearer

  3527. and

  3528. to me

  3529. he's

  3530. become

  3531. invincible

  3532. unstoppable

  3533. and

  3534. I think

  3535. that's

  3536. the fire

  3537. you're

  3538. talking

  3539. about

  3540. once

  3541. you

  3542. let

  3543. God

  3544. just

  3545. do

  3546. that

  3547. you

  3548. can't

  3549. do

  3550. anything

  3551. else

  3552. what else

  3553. can I

  3554. do

  3555. God

  3556. that's

  3557. it

  3558. we're

  3559. going

  3560. to

  3561. come

  3562. to

  3563. a

  3564. close

  3565. here

  3566. he

  3567. became

  3568. a

  3569. superhero

  3570. through

  3571. the

  3572. challenges

  3573. that he

  3574. faced

  3575. for us

  3576. to know

  3577. who we

  3578. are

  3579. in

  3580. Christ

  3581. not

  3582. knowing

  3583. who we

  3584. are

  3585. in

  3586. Christ

  3587. is

  3588. the

  3589. biggest

  3590. lie

  3591. that the

  3592. enemy

  3593. wants

  3594. to

  3595. keep

  3596. us

  3597. down

  3598. that's

  3599. the

  3600. only

  3601. thing

  3602. I

  3603. tell

  3604. myself

  3605. all

  3606. these

  3607. lies

  3608. all

  3609. the

  3610. time

  3611. who

  3612. told

  3613. me

  3614. that

  3615. nobody

  3616. just

  3617. me

  3618. but

  3619. if

  3620. I

  3621. get

  3622. back

  3623. to

  3624. that

  3625. and

  3626. really

  3627. take

  3628. God

  3629. for

  3630. his

  3631. word

  3632. because

  3633. it

  3634. is

  3635. the

  3636. only

  3637. certainty

  3638. in

  3639. life

  3640. people

  3641. say

  3642. you

  3643. go

  3644. to

  3645. Africa

  3646. it's

  3647. very

  3648. risky

  3649. the

  3650. only

  3651. risk

  3652. free

  3653. way

  3654. is

  3655. to

  3656. live

  3657. in

  3658. Christ

  3659. that's

  3660. the

  3661. only

  3662. risk

  3663. free

  3664. way

  3665. do you

  3666. know

  3667. who

  3668. Anreen

  3669. reminds

  3670. me

  3671. of

  3672. the

  3673. apostles

  3674. the

  3675. people

  3676. who

  3677. saw

  3678. someone

  3679. die

  3680. and

  3681. then

  3682. rise

  3683. again

  3684. you

  3685. can't

  3686. stop

  3687. us

  3688. this

  3689. is

  3690. it

  3691. and

  3692. she

  3693. says

  3694. he

  3695. lives

  3696. in

  3697. a

  3698. way

  3699. that

  3700. is

  3701. so

  3702. radically

  3703. filled

  3704. with

  3705. freedom

  3706. and

  3707. to

  3708. be

  3709. free

  3710. and

  3711. to

  3712. be

  3713. okay

  3714. with

  3715. who

  3716. we

  3717. are

  3718. yes

  3719. thank

  3720. you

  3721. Joyce

  3722. thank

  3723. you

  3724. for

  3725. having

  3726. we're

  3727. going

  3728. to

  3729. give

  3730. her

  3731. round

  3732. of

  3733. applause

  3734. there's

  3735. only

  3736. two

  3737. things

  3738. I

  3739. want

  3740. to

  3741. do

  3742. sadly

  3743. we

  3744. ran

  3745. out

  3746. of

  3747. time

  3748. sorry

  3749. music

  3750. team

  3751. but

  3752. one

  3753. is

  3754. if

  3755. you

  3756. want

  3757. to

  3758. hear

  3759. more

  3760. again

  3761. it's

  3762. not

  3763. just

  3764. doctors

  3765. it's

  3766. anyone

  3767. who

  3768. just

  3769. some

  3770. of

  3771. you

  3772. might

  3773. even

  3774. just

  3775. be

  3776. bubbling

  3777. up

  3778. right

  3779. now

  3780. inside

  3781. I

  3782. need

  3783. to

  3784. find

  3785. out

  3786. more

  3787. I

  3788. need

  3789. to

  3790. hear

  3791. the

  3792. end

  3793. of

  3794. that

  3795. story

  3796. I

  3797. need

  3798. to

  3799. do

  3800. something

  3801. I

  3802. need

  3803. to

  3804. say

  3805. yes

  3806. my

  3807. simple

  3808. yes

  3809. Tuesday

  3810. night

  3811. Joyce

  3812. has been

  3813. a long

  3814. term

  3815. partner

  3816. of

  3817. Kongfuk

  3818. Church

  3819. for a

  3820. long

  3821. time

  3822. now

  3823. on

  3824. Tuesday

  3825. night

  3826. at

  3827. Kongfuk

  3828. she

  3829. will

  3830. be

  3831. !

  3832. Trevor

  3833. come

  3834. up

  3835. can

  3836. you

  3837. pray

  3838. for

  3839. Joyce

  3840. can

  3841. we

  3842. stretch

  3843. our

  3844. hands

  3845. she

  3846. will

  3847. be

  3848. heading

  3849. back

  3850. soon

  3851. later

  3852. just

  3853. put

  3854. our

  3855. QR

  3856. codes

  3857. if

  3858. you

  3859. want

  3860. to

  3861. connect

  3862. with

  3863. us

  3864. just

  3865. write

  3866. there's

  3867. some

  3868. leaflets

  3869. over there

  3870. if you

  3871. want to

  3872. find out

  3873. more

  3874. we

  3875. were

  3876. praying

  3877. about

  3878. we

  3879. decided

  3880. to

  3881. do

  3882. this

  3883. only

  3884. a

  3885. few

  3886. days

  3887. ago

  3888. it's

  3889. not

  3890. necessarily

  3891. about

  3892. New

  3893. site

  3894. Congo

  3895. we

  3896. want

  3897. you

  3898. to

  3899. meet

  3900. her

  3901. I

  3902. want

  3903. to

  3904. see

  3905. her

  3906. burning

  3907. bush

  3908. and

  3909. I

  3910. want

  3911. you

  3912. to

  3913. have

  3914. yours

  3915. whatever

  3916. it

  3917. looks

  3918. like

  3919. both

  3920. of

  3921. us

  3922. have

  3923. such

  3924. a

  3925. sense

  3926. that

  3927. God

  3928. really

  3929. is

  3930. trying

  3931. to

  3932. get

  3933. something

  3934. to

  3935. you

  3936. I'm

  3937. not

  3938. even

  3939. supposed

  3940. to be

  3941. in

  3942. Hong

  3943. Kong

  3944. this

  3945. week

  3946. but

  3947. I

  3948. happened

  3949. to

  3950. be

  3951. here

  3952. I

  3953. wasn't

  3954. supposed

  3955. to

  3956. be

  3957. speaking

  3958. anywhere

  3959. but

  3960. the

  3961. moment

  3962. he

  3963. said

  3964. it

  3965. we

  3966. saw

  3967. this

  3968. is

  3969. what

  3970. we're

  3971. !

  3972. to

  3973. !

  3974. Don't

  3975. ignore

  3976. that

  3977. little

  3978. prompting

  3979. in your

  3980. heart

  3981. because

  3982. it's

  3983. not

  3984. that

  3985. you

  3986. have

  3987. to

  3988. do

  3989. anything

  3990. for

  3991. God

  3992. but

  3993. you

  3994. get

  3995. to

  3996. do

  3997. something

  3998. God's

  3999. inviting

  4000. you

  4001. right

  4002. now

  4003. to

  4004. be

  4005. really

  4006. all

  4007. those

  4008. amazing

  4009. plans

  4010. and

  4011. dreams

  4012. and

  4013. seeds

  4014. put

  4015. inside

  4016. of

  4017. you

  4018. I

  4019. see

  4020. this

  4021. and

  4022. I

  4023. look

  4024. back

  4025. and

  4026. I

  4027. think

  4028. now

  4029. I

  4030. see

  4031. all

  4032. those

  4033. things

  4034. in

  4035. the

  4036. past

  4037. I

  4038. just

  4039. dismiss

  4040. !

  4041. Father

  4042. thank you

  4043. so much

  4044. for

  4045. Joyce

  4046. and

  4047. the

  4048. whole

  4049. Samoto

  4050. family

  4051. God

  4052. I

  4053. ask

  4054. that

  4055. you

  4056. pour

  4057. out

  4058. more

  4059. of

  4060. your

  4061. presence

  4062. into

  4063. their

  4064. lives

  4065. may

  4066. you

  4067. fill

  4068. them

  4069. with

  4070. more

  4071. of

  4072. your

  4073. Holy

  4074. Spirit

  4075. from

  4076. the

  4077. top

  4078. of

  4079. their

  4080. feet

  4081. and

  4082. that

  4083. everything

  4084. around

  4085. them

  4086. exudes

  4087. your

  4088. presence

  4089. that

  4090. you

  4091. send

  4092. angels

  4093. to

  4094. prepare

  4095. the

  4096. way

  4097. before

  4098. them

  4099. and

  4100. be

  4101. around

  4102. them

  4103. and

  4104. be

  4105. behind

  4106. them

  4107. and

  4108. God

  4109. wherever

  4110. you

  4111. continue

  4112. to

  4113. call

  4114. them

  4115. to

  4116. I

  4117. ask

  4118. that

  4119. you

  4120. bless

  4121. them

  4122. and

  4123. every

  4124. single

  4125. person

  4126. they

  4127. encounter

  4128. that

  4129. they

  4130. would

  4131. be

  4132. blessed

  4133. by

  4134. them

  4135. and

  4136. that

  4137. they

  4138. would

  4139. be

  4140. a

  4141. blessing

  4142. to

  4143. them

  4144. and

  4145. Lord

  4146. may

  4147. you

  4148. also

  4149. provide

  4150. even

  4151. earthly

  4152. needs

  4153. that

  4154. they

  4155. need

  4156. beyond

  4157. their

  4158. imagination

  4159. beyond

  4160. their

  4161. expectation

  4162. just

  4163. so

  4164. that

  4165. they

  4166. would

  4167. know

  4168. just

  4169. how

  4170. good

  4171. you

  4172. are

  4173. just

  4174. how

  4175. you've

  4176. chosen

  4177. them

  4178. you

  4179. selected

  4180. them

  4181. out

  4182. of

  4183. all

  4184. the

  4185. different

  4186. people

  4187. to

  4188. continue

  4189. to

  4190. walk

  4191. in

  4192. your

  4193. ways

  4194. in

  4195. Congo

  4196. or

  4197. everywhere

  4198. else

  4199. because

  4200. they

  4201. chose

  4202. to

  4203. say

  4204. yes

  4205. to

  4206. you

  4207. and

  4208. God

  4209. we

  4210. love

  4211. you

  4212. and

  4213. we

  4214. pray

  4215. these

  4216. things

  4217. in

  4218. Jesus

  4219. name

  4220. amen
