  1. Well, I wonder, how might we, how might you, summarise all of those passages from Matthew?

  2. ! There's a lot in there, isn't there? Thank you, Wendy, thank you, Imi, for reading that so clearly today, giving us that opportunity to hear and notice.

  3. And I'm curious, what is it that we're noticing as we come to this?

  4. Was there anything that you were drawn to that kind of stood out for you?

  5. Well, our theme today is turning away.

  6. So, we're going to unpack this through this story.

  7. We see the huge betrayal that Jesus experienced when Judas turned away from him.

  8. So, we'll unpack it and then we'll explore a little bit.

  9. What does this mean for us?

  10. What might it mean personally in our own discipleship journeys, in our relationship with God?

  11. So, first of all, we see Judas agree to betray Jesus.

  12. And I don't know if any of you are into traitors, watching traitors.

  13. I didn't watch the first two series and then it turns out when you've got a 17-year-old son, actually, you need to find things that you can watch together.

  14. And so, we watched the last series, I think it was the last series of traitors.

  15. And it was intriguing.

  16. And obviously, the word traitor comes up today for us and this theme.

  17. But it's a lot heavier and a lot weightier when it's not just a BBC drama.

  18. When we're thinking and hearing about the betrayal of Jesus, even though it was written in history.

  19. So, as we come to this today, let's just acknowledge how we may have connected with this before.

  20. But how God might want to use this story today to stir in our hearts the noticing that he is wanting us to do today.

  21. And the response that he is going to take us through this morning.

  22. So, I was straight away drawn to wondering, what are the complex motives behind Judas' betrayal?

  23. Let's remember, he's been one of Jesus' closest friends.

  24. He's literally been doing life with Jesus, with the other disciples.

  25. He's been witnessing extraordinary things.

  26. Personally, he had experience of those.

  27. So, what on earth happened?

  28. I wonder, was it greed?

  29. He saw an opportunity for financial reward.

  30. Was it a lack of faith?

  31. Disillusionment with what he saw playing out around him.

  32. Different, perhaps, to what he expected or assumed it would look like.

  33. Perhaps the power, kind of that desire for power, outweighed his love for Jesus in that moment.

  34. And he saw the opportunity to be a significant player in the world, in the growing tensions that the power authorities were fueling.

  35. So, we're curious.

  36. What's going on for Judas here?

  37. And then we move to the Last Supper, as we now call it.

  38. So, verses 20 to 30.

  39. And here is rich symbolism.

  40. It's the Passover meal.

  41. A time of communal remembrance, coming together and remembering God's faithfulness to the Jewish people.

  42. A time of unity and the foreshadowing of Jesus as the Lamb of God, the ultimate sacrifice.

  43. And we see here Jesus speak out a poignant prediction of this betrayal.

  44. In this sacred moment, the confusion in the room is tangible.

  45. And even Judas, asking what seems to be like the oddest question.

  46. I noticed, Alex, you went, hmm.

  47. In the message version, it says, bearing in mind Judas knows what he's already done.

  48. He's already been to the authorities and said, what will you give me to do this?

  49. Judas then says, it isn't me, is it, Rabbi?

  50. In front of everyone else.

  51. So, straight away, again, I'm noticing these themes coming up of what's going on internally

  52. and what's playing out in front of everyone else.

  53. I wonder if any of us can relate.

  54. I wonder if any of us are beginning to notice things that God wants to draw our attention to this morning.

  55. There is an incredible tension here between the holiness of this meal and the shadow of what's to come.

  56. So, let's go a bit further into the Garden of Gethsemane.

  57. And Jesus is arrested.

  58. The darkness, the tension, the clash of emotions in this moment are vivid.

  59. And the symbolism of a kiss, a Judas kiss, a gesture of such intimacy,

  60. turned into one of ultimate betrayal.

  61. So, as we just hold this space this morning,

  62. and for some of us it's a very familiar space,

  63. and it will feel a very safe space, naturally.

  64. For others, we may be here for the first time,

  65. or we may not be feeling quite so grounded and connected.

  66. But I just want to encourage us as we reflect this morning.

  67. God is here.

  68. His spirit is here.

  69. And we're here to do his work.

  70. He's invited us into this place.

  71. So, we're going to pause.

  72. And we're going to just think in the quiet.

  73. Maybe draw to mind

  74. and consider perhaps the heartache that we might have experienced

  75. of a betrayal by someone really close to us.

  76. This would have been really confusing and hurtful for the disciples here.

  77. And even though Jesus had predicted it would happen,

  78. I do still wonder what emotions he was experiencing.

  79. He's human

  80. and all God.

  81. Incredible.

  82. Maybe we can recall that time

  83. when we've experienced a betrayal.

  84. Maybe we didn't name it as that.

  85. Maybe we would have just kind of noticed

  86. a real deception of another person or a situation.

  87. That feeling of really being let down

  88. by someone that we thought we could completely trust.

  89. The deep pain felt.

  90. Or perhaps

  91. what might be coming to mind for us

  92. is a time when we ourselves have behaved in a way

  93. that has caused this pain to others.

  94. Someone who trusted us.

  95. Deep pain caused.

  96. This is really uncomfortable

  97. and challenging, I think.

  98. And hard to acknowledge

  99. that there are times

  100. when we are likely to cause this pain

  101. unintentionally.

  102. We are human.

  103. We are broken people.

  104. Flawed.

  105. And we cannot possibly

  106. get relationships right

  107. all of the time.

  108. But the thing for me

  109. that is just so striking

  110. and hallelujah that it is

  111. is what I was thinking

  112. is Jesus' response.

  113. Despite the chaos,

  114. he seems so composed.

  115. He even calls Judas

  116. friend.

  117. Friend.

  118. Why this charade?

  119. He seems to be calling Judas

  120. gently out on his behaviour,

  121. on his actions,

  122. his choices.

  123. Jesus is not reacting

  124. in a big, emotionally charged way.

  125. There seems to be peace,

  126. even acceptance,

  127. but we know

  128. that he has already

  129. wrestled with his father

  130. in the garden

  131. just moments before

  132. with huge emotion,

  133. with questions.

  134. But here it would seem to me

  135. his connection

  136. with God's presence,

  137. his deep knowledge

  138. of the truth

  139. of who God is

  140. keeps him grounded

  141. and present

  142. and with enough strength

  143. to face

  144. what he has got to face.

  145. It's incredible.

  146. So here comes another question.

  147. I wonder

  148. what you or I

  149. might recall

  150. of our own reactions

  151. and responses

  152. to the times

  153. of betrayal

  154. in our lives

  155. or of being

  156. betrayed.

  157. I imagine

  158. and I don't know

  159. and I don't assume

  160. but I imagine

  161. that all of us

  162. have had

  163. those experiences

  164. punctuate our life

  165. and there's more to come.

  166. let's just ask God

  167. to

  168. through his spirit

  169. revealed to us

  170. just to our internal selves

  171. how these experiences

  172. have shaped us.

  173. Is there anything

  174. he's wanting us

  175. to notice

  176. today

  177. and just bring

  178. before him

  179. in prayer?

  180. we will have time

  181. at the end

  182. to pray

  183. with one another

  184. or pray

  185. with the prayer team

  186. or to have

  187. that conversation

  188. with God

  189. ourselves

  190. maybe in this space

  191. maybe beyond it

  192. but let's not miss

  193. the noticing

  194. he's wanting us

  195. to do.

  196. And finally

  197. a new day dawns

  198. Jesus is condemned

  199. the course of history

  200. is set

  201. and we witness

  202. Judas'

  203. overwhelming guilt

  204. and despair.

  205. We see the weight

  206. that human weight

  207. of him turning away

  208. from God

  209. and the crushing

  210. burden of remorse

  211. felt even more sharply

  212. following the cruel

  213. rejection

  214. of his offer

  215. to return the money

  216. to the high priests.

  217. And yet

  218. in this

  219. darkest of moments

  220. we're invited

  221. to notice

  222. what I feel

  223. is like the most

  224. extraordinary detail

  225. the fate

  226. of the 30

  227. silver coins.

  228. the irony

  229. of the chief

  230. priest's use

  231. of this

  232. betrayal money

  233. to buy

  234. the potter's field

  235. holds a deep

  236. significance

  237. not only

  238. because it's

  239. actually used

  240. ultimately

  241. for something good

  242. that would help

  243. others

  244. it becomes

  245. a burial

  246. ground

  247. for the homeless

  248. but

  249. it also

  250. fulfills

  251. a prophecy

  252. Jeremiah

  253. predicted

  254. that this

  255. exact

  256. thing

  257. would happen

  258. and so

  259. suddenly

  260. we are

  261. connected

  262. firmly

  263. in this

  264. moment

  265. in time

  266. to the

  267. grand

  268. narrative

  269. of God's

  270. overarching

  271. story

  272. and it

  273. reminds us

  274. how God

  275. can turn

  276. even the

  277. worst

  278. of human

  279. actions

  280. into part

  281. of his

  282. bigger plan

  283. for good

  284. when we

  285. look at

  286. this prophecy

  287. and its

  288. fulfilment

  289. we see it

  290. fitting into

  291. God's

  292. larger plan

  293. for redemption

  294. using the

  295. money to

  296. buy the

  297. potter's

  298. field

  299. shows

  300. that even

  301. human

  302. mistakes

  303. clumsy

  304. choices

  305. bad

  306. choices

  307. can be

  308. woven

  309. into

  310. God's

  311. story of

  312. salvation

  313. this

  314. story

  315. makes us

  316. think about

  317. betrayal

  318. but it

  319. invites us

  320. to think

  321. about

  322. repentance

  323. God's

  324. mercy

  325. and reminds

  326. us that

  327. there is

  328. always hope

  329. and the

  330. chance

  331. of a

  332. fresh

  333. start

  334. God

  335. is

  336. with us

  337. fully

  338. present

  339. there

  340. with his

  341. unending

  342. grace

  343. his

  344. forgiveness

  345. and the

  346. possibility

  347. of redemption

  348. even in our

  349. darkest

  350. moments

  351. love

  352. and all

  353. we need

  354. do

  355. is turn

  356. back

  357. turn

  358. back

  359. to him

  360. he is

  361. there

  362. the

  363. bible

  364. is full

  365. of this

  366. message

  367. full

  368. I

  369. was

  370. overwhelmed

  371. with the

  372. number

  373. of

  374. verses

  375. I could

  376. have

  377. brought

  378. to you

  379. at this

  380. moment

  381. but I

  382. pray that

  383. you hear

  384. in these

  385. something

  386. that connects

  387. with your

  388. soul

  389. in 1

  390. John

  391. it says

  392. if we

  393. confess

  394. our sins

  395. he is

  396. faithful

  397. and just

  398. and will

  399. forgive us

  400. our sins

  401. and purify

  402. us from

  403. all

  404. unrighteousness

  405. psalm 103

  406. says

  407. as far

  408. as the

  409. east

  410. is from

  411. the west

  412. so far

  413. has he

  414. removed his

  415. transgressions

  416. from us

  417. Romans 3

  418. I find

  419. a lot of

  420. comfort here

  421. for all

  422. have sinned

  423. all

  424. fall short

  425. of the

  426. glory of

  427. God

  428. and

  429. all

  430. are

  431. justified

  432. freely

  433. by his

  434. grace

  435. through the

  436. redemption

  437. that came

  438. by Christ

  439. Jesus

  440. and

  441. Micah

  442. 7

  443. who

  444. is

  445. a

  446. God

  447. like

  448. you

  449. who

  450. pardons

  451. sin

  452. forgives

  453. the

  454. transgression

  455. of the

  456. remnant

  457. of his

  458. inheritance

  459. you

  460. do not

  461. stay

  462. angry

  463. forever

  464. but

  465. delight

  466. to show

  467. mercy

  468. you will

  469. again

  470. have

  471. compassion

  472. on us

  473. you will

  474. tread our

  475. sins

  476. underfoot

  477. and hurl

  478. all our

  479. iniquities

  480. into the

  481. depths

  482. of the

  483. sea

  484. and I

  485. say

  486. amen

  487. to that

  488. God

  489. hurling

  490. oh I love

  491. that word

  492. hurling our

  493. iniquities

  494. all the

  495. stuff that

  496. we

  497. intentionally

  498. and

  499. unintentionally

  500. just

  501. get wrong

  502. that causes

  503. that gap

  504. between us

  505. and God

  506. he

  507. constantly

  508. takes it

  509. and by

  510. his grace

  511. we are

  512. forgiven

  513. and we

  514. have

  515. relationship

  516. with him

  517. he is

  518. with us

  519. for all

  520. eternity

  521. and we're

  522. in this

  523. bit

  524. in the

  525. middle

  526. but he

  527. is here

  528. he is

  529. here

  530. for us

  531. to turn

  532. back to

  533. when I

  534. ask you

  535. that question

  536. to bring

  537. to mind

  538. perhaps a

  539. time when

  540. you have

  541. felt

  542. betrayed

  543. deceived

  544. by someone

  545. or

  546. you

  547. perhaps

  548. have

  549. brought

  550. to mind

  551. when

  552. that has

  553. been

  554. your

  555. action

  556. I know

  557. that I

  558. can do

  559. this

  560. I've

  561. done

  562. this

  563. in

  564. preparing

  565. today

  566. I can

  567. think

  568. of both

  569. of those

  570. situations

  571. I can

  572. place

  573. myself

  574. back

  575. there

  576. perhaps

  577. for some

  578. of us

  579. it's

  580. remembering

  581. a time

  582. when

  583. that has

  584. been our

  585. experience

  586. in our

  587. relationship

  588. with God

  589. honest

  590. enough

  591. to say

  592. to God

  593. when I

  594. think back

  595. to that

  596. time

  597. God

  598. God

  599. I felt

  600. betrayed

  601. by you

  602. and now

  603. I'm

  604. reminded

  605. this

  606. morning

  607. of

  608. who

  609. you

  610. are

  611. the

  612. truth

  613. of

  614. who

  615. you

  616. are

  617. you

  618. never

  619. betray

  620. us

  621. you

  622. never

  623. let

  624. us

  625. down

  626. we

  627. are

  628. never

  629. alone

  630. we may

  631. feel

  632. it

  633. everything

  634. around

  635. us

  636. may

  637. suggest

  638. that

  639. that

  640. is

  641. truth

  642. but

  643. perhaps

  644. what

  645. he's

  646. reminding

  647. us

  648. this

  649. morning

  650. is

  651. that

  652. we

  653. are

  654. deceived

  655. if

  656. we

  657. believe

  658. that

  659. the

  660. truth

  661. is

  662. that

  663. he

  664. is

  665. with

  666. us

  667. his

  668. plans

  669. for

  670. us

  671. are

  672. good

  673. and

  674. they

  675. play

  676. out

  677. in

  678. many

  679. different

  680. ways

  681. often

  682. not

  683. how

  684. we

  685. expect

  686. so

  687. I

  688. want

  689. to

  690. leave

  691. you

  692. us

  693. include

  694. myself

  695. in

  696. this

  697. with

  698. one

  699. question

  700. what

  701. story

  702. are

  703. you

  704. telling

  705. yourself

  706. what

  707. story

  708. are

  709. you

  710. telling

  711. yourself

  712. that's

  713. going

  714. to

  715. require

  716. a bit

  717. of a

  718. look

  719. inside

  720. a bit

  721. of

  722. curiosity

  723. perhaps

  724. with

  725. God

  726. I

  727. wonder

  728. does

  729. it

  730. align

  731. with

  732. the

  733. truth

  734. of

  735. God's

  736. message

  737. to

  738. us

  739. in

  740. his

  741. word

  742. is

  743. the

  744. central

  745. message

  746. in

  747. the

  748. story

  749. we

  750. tell

  751. ourselves

  752. one

  753. of

  754. hope

  755. of

  756. renewal

  757. encouraging

  758. us

  759. to

  760. always

  761. be

  762. seeking

  763. forgiveness

  764. and

  765. to

  766. extend

  767. it

  768. to

  769. others

  770. and we

  771. know

  772. how hard

  773. that can

  774. be

  775. or how

  776. complex

  777. that can

  778. be

  779. and if

  780. that's

  781. something

  782. you're

  783. wrestling

  784. with

  785. please

  786. come and

  787. have a

  788. conversation

  789. or find

  790. someone you

  791. can have a

  792. conversation

  793. with

  794. because

  795. forgiveness

  796. doesn't always

  797. look like

  798. or mean

  799. perhaps what

  800. we assume

  801. it does

  802. mean

  803. are we

  804. aligned

  805. with that

  806. redemption

  807. that is

  808. always

  809. within

  810. reach

  811. just

  812. going to

  813. give

  814. time

  815. going to

  816. have a

  817. couple of

  818. minutes

  819. and then

  820. I'm going

  821. to just

  822. draw that

  823. time

  824. julian to

  825. a close

  826. by reading

  827. a poem

  828. that

  829. will

  830. hopefully

  831. just draw

  832. together

  833. some of

  834. the themes

  835. from this

  836. morning

  837. and invite

  838. people beyond

  839. this space

  840. to not

  841. just rush

  842. away from

  843. what God

  844. is doing

  845. thank you

  846. let's just

  847. take a couple

  848. of moments

  849. with the music

  850. quietly

  851. and now

  852. just bring

  853. ourselves

  854. before God

  855. everything we

  856. bring to

  857. this place

  858. finds a

  859. place here

  860. every case

  861. that we

  862. carry

  863. can be

  864. consigned

  865. here

  866. every load

  867. we are

  868. lifting

  869. can be

  870. left

  871. every

  872. secret

  873. we are

  874. slaves to

  875. can be

  876. spoken

  877. here

  878. and every

  879. terror

  880. that

  881. torments

  882. us

  883. can be

  884. told

  885. there is

  886. room here

  887. for anguish

  888. for the

  889. agony

  890. of abandonment

  891. there is

  892. ground here

  893. for grieving

  894. for the

  895. weeping

  896. wounds

  897. of loss

  898. in this

  899. circle of

  900. safety

  901. at this

  902. fireside

  903. of faith

  904. there is

  905. space

  906. for story

  907. and song

  908. there is

  909. room

  910. for revelation

  911. and renewal

  912. here is

  913. hope

  914. and healing

  915. here is

  916. forgiveness

  917. and freedom

  918. here is

  919. connection

  920. and correction

  921. and coming

  922. to our

  923. senses

  924. at this

  925. source

  926. whose depths

  927. are never

  928. ending

  929. this river

  930. that will

  931. never run

  932. dry

  933. at this

  934. table

  935. whose banquet

  936. of abundance

  937. knows no

  938. bounds

  939. no wrong

  940. is too

  941. wrong

  942. to be

  943. righted

  944. here

  945. no tragedy

  946. too twisted

  947. to be

  948. turned

  949. for everything

  950. we bring

  951. to this

  952. place

  953. finds

  954. a place

  955. here

  956. and every

  957. load

  958. we are

  959. lifting

  960. can be

  961. left

  962. up
