  1. And good morning, everyone. It's good to be with you.

  2. And for those of us new here or following along,

  3. we've been preaching through the book of Acts.

  4. Acts is about the beginning of the church,

  5. the history of the early church, that Jesus died and rose from the dead.

  6. And that's the spark that set fire to the early church.

  7. And we see in Acts how this fire spreads

  8. until we're here 2,000 years later in Hong Kong worshiping Jesus.

  9. And we heard in the last several weeks

  10. that the church got off to a strong start.

  11. The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost.

  12. Peter preached the first sermon.

  13. And 3,000 people believed.

  14. We also saw the first healing,

  15. where a crippled man in Jesus' name started to walk.

  16. The church was new and exciting.

  17. And there were so many great firsts.

  18. But then it took a turn.

  19. Last week, we heard about the first sin and the first death.

  20. And Ananias and Sapphira, they conspired to lie,

  21. and God struck them down, dead,

  22. to preserve the integrity of the church.

  23. We learn there that God is gracious, and he is also holy.

  24. He is jealous for the purity of the church,

  25. that we are holy like he is holy.

  26. So that's the first sin and the first death.

  27. Mainly, I want to turn our attention back to the week before that,

  28. to Acts 4, where we see another first.

  29. The first persecution.

  30. Peter and John heal a crippled man.

  31. There was this man that was handicapped.

  32. He couldn't walk for decades.

  33. That's amazing, right?

  34. But what reward did the apostles get?

  35. Did they get a medal?

  36. Did they get a community service award?

  37. No.

  38. Instead, they faced persecution.

  39. Instead, the authorities arrest them,

  40. throw them in jail for a night,

  41. and drag them to court.

  42. And they warn them, stop talking about Jesus.

  43. We know you healed this guy,

  44. but you can't talk about Jesus.

  45. But do you think Peter and John stopped preaching?

  46. Of course not.

  47. And they tell them,

  48. whether it is right in the sight of God

  49. to listen to you rather than men,

  50. you must judge.

  51. But we can't stop speaking of what we heard and seen.

  52. And so they meet back up with the friends,

  53. and they pray.

  54. They pray.

  55. It's interesting because they don't pray.

  56. They don't pray,

  57. God, stop the persecution.

  58. They don't pray for that.

  59. But instead, they say,

  60. Sovereign Lord, give us boldness.

  61. Look upon their threats,

  62. and give us boldness.

  63. And as they prayed for boldness,

  64. we heard,

  65. The room shook.

  66. That's how God answered their prayers.

  67. Boldness against opposition.

  68. We see the same thing happen again in Acts 5.

  69. The same thing repeats.

  70. The apostles are arrested,

  71. but God delivers them.

  72. And that's what we're going to focus on today.

  73. How can we have boldness to proclaim Christ

  74. when facing opposition?

  75. But you shouldn't care what I have to say

  76. unless it's what God has to say.

  77. So let's stand as we read God's word.

  78. We're gathered to be devoted to God's word,

  79. not mine.

  80. So let's stand out of reverence

  81. as we read God's word today in Acts 5.

  82. I'm going to invite Gabs to read for us.

  83. Acts chapter 5, verses 12 to 42.

    Acts 5:12–42

  84. Now many signs and wonders

  85. were regularly done among the people

  86. by the hands of the apostles,

  87. and they were all together in Solomon's portico.

  88. None of the rest dared join them,

  89. but the people held them in high esteem.

  90. And more than ever,

  91. believers were added to the Lord,

  92. multitudes of both men and women,

  93. so that they even carried out

  94. the sick into the streets

  95. and laid them on cots and mats,

  96. that as Peter came by,

  97. at least his shadow might fall on some of them.

  98. The people also gathered

  99. from the towns around Jerusalem,

  100. bringing the sick and those afflicted

  101. with unclean spirits,

  102. and they were all healed.

  103. But the high priest rose up,

  104. and all who were with him,

  105. that is, the party of the Sadducees.

  106. And filled with jealousy,

  107. they arrested the apostles

  108. and put them into public prison.

  109. But during the night,

  110. an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors

  111. and brought them out and said,

  112. go and stand in the temple

  113. and speak to the people

  114. all the words of this life.

  115. And when they heard this,

  116. they entered the temple at daybreak

  117. and began to teach.

  118. Now when the high priest came

  119. and those who were with him,

  120. they called together the council

  121. or the senate of the people of Israel

  122. and sent to the prison

  123. to have them brought.

  124. But when the officers came,

  125. they did not find them in the prison.

  126. So they returned and reported.

  127. We found the prison securely locked

  128. and the guards standing at the doors.

  129. But when we opened them,

  130. we found no one inside.

  131. Now when the captain of the temple

  132. and the chief priest heard these words,

  133. they were greatly perplexed about them,

  134. wondering what this would come to.

  135. And someone came and told them,

  136. look, the men who you put in prison

  137. are standing in the temple

  138. and teaching the people.

  139. Then the captain with the officers

  140. went and brought them,

  141. but not by force,

  142. for they were afraid

  143. of being stoned by the people.

  144. And when they had brought them,

  145. they set them before the council.

  146. And the high priest questioned them,

  147. saying,

  148. we strictly charge you

  149. not to teach in this name.

  150. Yet here you have filled Jerusalem

  151. with your teaching

  152. and you intend to bring

  153. this man's blood upon us.

  154. But Peter and the apostles answered,

  155. we must obey God rather than men.

  156. The God of our fathers raised Jesus,

  157. whom you killed

  158. by hanging him on a tree.

  159. God exalted him at his right hand

  160. as leader and savior

  161. to give repentance to Israel

  162. and forgiveness of sins.

  163. And we are witnesses to these things.

  164. And so is the Holy Spirit,

  165. whom God has given

  166. to those who obey him.

  167. When they heard this,

  168. they were enraged

  169. and wanted to kill them.

  170. But a Pharisee in the council

  171. named Gamaliel,

  172. a teacher of the law

  173. held in honor by all the people,

  174. stood up and gave orders

  175. to put the men outside

  176. for a little while.

  177. And he said to them,

  178. men of Israel,

  179. take care what you are about

  180. to do with these men.

  181. For before these days,

  182. Thudias rose up,

  183. claiming to be somebody

  184. and a number of men,

  185. about 400 joined him.

  186. He was killed

  187. and all who followed him

  188. were dispersed

  189. and came to nothing.

  190. After him,

  191. Judas, the Galilean,

  192. rose up in the days

  193. of the census

  194. and drew away

  195. some of those people after him.

  196. He too perished

  197. and all who followed him

  198. were scattered.

  199. So in the present case,

  200. I tell you,

  201. keep away from these men

  202. and let them alone.

  203. For this plan

  204. or this undertaking

  205. is of man.

  206. It will fail.

  207. But if it is of God,

  208. you will not be able

  209. to overthrow them.

  210. You might even be found

  211. opposing God.

  212. So they took his advice

  213. and when they had called

  214. in the apostles,

  215. they beat them

  216. and charged them

  217. not to speak

  218. in the name of Jesus

  219. and let them go.

  220. Then they left

  221. the presence of the council,

  222. rejoicing that they were

  223. counted worthy

  224. to suffer dishonor

  225. for his name.

  226. And every day

  227. in the temple,

  228. and from house to house,

  229. they did not cease

  230. teaching and preaching

  231. that the Christ

  232. is Jesus.

  233. This is the word

  234. of the Lord.

  235. Thanks.

  236. You can take a seat.

  237. And let's pray.

  238. Lord, we look to you.

  239. You are a God

  240. who is powerful,

  241. who can't be stopped,

  242. who is on our side.

  243. We may be chained,

  244. but the word of God

  245. can't be chained.

  246. So speak to us

  247. by your spirit.

  248. In Jesus' name.

  249. Amen.

  250. Okay, so,

  251. the lens we'll look

  252. through this today

  253. is how can we be

  254. bold witnesses

  255. for Christ

  256. when facing opposition?

  257. That's our focus.

  258. So two weeks ago,

  259. Acts 4 again,

  260. we saw the first persecution.

  261. And now,

  262. as we read

  263. in Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  264. it's deja vu of that.

  265. The same thing

  266. almost happens again.

  267. There's persecution again.

  268. The apostles

  269. are arrested again.

  270. And they're freed again.

  271. Now, Jesus says,

  272. if we're truly followers

  273. of him,

  274. we'll all face

  275. some sort of persecution.

  276. The gospel is offensive.

  277. Jesus says in John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  278. if they persecuted me,

  279. they will also persecute you.

  280. And we said before,

  281. if we're not offensive

  282. in some way,

  283. we're not going out of a way

  284. trying to be mean,

  285. but if the gospel

  286. is offensive

  287. and if we are not

  288. being offensive

  289. in some way

  290. in the way we live

  291. or the gospel we preach,

  292. if that is palatable

  293. to everyone,

  294. that should make us consider

  295. whether that is really

  296. the gospel

  297. or just cheap grace.

  298. Now, at the same time,

  299. life's actually pretty good

  300. in Hong Kong.

  301. We're gathered here today

  302. freely

  303. without any fear

  304. of persecution.

  305. We're not really scared

  306. someone's going to come

  307. and arrest us right now.

  308. I doubt many of us

  309. have been arrested

  310. because of our faith.

  311. And I'm pretty sure

  312. that none of us

  313. have been killed

  314. for our faith.

  315. That's not the same experience

  316. for Christians

  317. in many places

  318. around the world

  319. or even in the early church

  320. in Acts.

  321. But if persecution

  322. sounds a bit dramatic

  323. for you as a word,

  324. if persecution

  325. is a bit dramatic,

  326. how about the word opposition?

  327. As followers of Christ,

  328. all of us face opposition.

  329. Opposition could be

  330. big or small,

  331. ranging from severe persecution,

  332. being killed for your faith

  333. when there's a threat

  334. on your life

  335. to small things

  336. like fear of being awkward,

  337. being the odd one out,

  338. being rejected,

  339. being the weird Christian.

  340. We're probably not

  341. being arrested

  342. like the apostles today.

  343. Maybe some of us will be,

  344. but we still need boldness

  345. to be witnesses for Christ

  346. and facing opposition.

  347. I remember early

  348. when I was working

  349. at my previous job

  350. in finance,

  351. I needed boldness sometimes

  352. when my coworkers,

  353. they would just make

  354. small talk,

  355. easy, simple things,

  356. and ask,

  357. hey,

  358. any plans this weekend?

  359. And I'd be like,

  360. yeah,

  361. I'm going for a hike,

  362. I'm going rock climbing,

  363. I'll read a book,

  364. I'll go to the gym,

  365. play guitar.

  366. I'm happy telling them

  367. all of that stuff.

  368. Normal people things,

  369. but I'd conveniently

  370. skip the fact that

  371. I gathered with the church

  372. to worship my Lord

  373. and Savior,

  374. Jesus Christ,

  375. out of fear,

  376. to avoid being awkward,

  377. to avoid being,

  378. just feeling nervous.

  379. I lack boldness.

  380. Can you guys relate to that?

  381. And so the question

  382. we'll address today

  383. is how can we be bold witnesses

  384. when faced with fear

  385. of opposition?

  386. Acts 4,

  387. at the end of the chapter,

  388. that taught us

  389. to pray for boldness.

  390. And today in Acts 5,

  391. we see a few more ways.

  392. We see a few more ways

  393. to be bold

  394. as God works

  395. on behalf of his church.

  396. First,

  397. we can be bold

  398. by doing what's good.

  399. We can be bold

  400. to face opposition

  401. by carrying with us

  402. a clean conscience.

  403. We read in Acts 5

  404. that the apostles

  405. got arrested again.

  406. But what was the crime

  407. that got them arrested?

  408. What were they arrested for?

  409. They must have done

  410. something really bad

  411. to be wanted criminals.

  412. Let's read from verse 12.

  413. It says,

  414. Now many signs and wonders

  415. were regularly done

  416. among the people

  417. by the hands of the apostles.

  418. They were doing signs and wonders

  419. and because of these signs

  420. they gained a reputation.

  421. Verse 13 says,

  422. The people held them

  423. in high esteem.

  424. They had a good reputation

  425. because they were healing people.

  426. The healing of that crippled man

  427. in Acts 3

  428. wasn't just a one-off.

  429. They kept performing miracles

  430. in Jesus' name

  431. and people started taking notice.

  432. Verse 15 says,

  433. They even carried out

  434. the sick into the streets

  435. and laid them on cots

  436. and mats

  437. that as Peter came by

  438. at least a shadow

  439. might fall on some of them.

  440. People also gathered

  441. from the towns

  442. around Jerusalem

  443. bringing the sick

  444. and those afflicted

  445. with unclean spirits.

  446. And they were all healed.

  447. The apostles

  448. were doing good.

  449. They were healing people.

  450. And the result

  451. in verse 14

  452. is that more than ever

  453. believers were added

  454. to the Lord.

  455. Multitudes of both

  456. men and women.

  457. The apostles,

  458. they were doing

  459. what Jesus did.

  460. Proclaiming the kingdom

  461. of God.

  462. Preaching the gospel.

  463. Preaching that Jesus

  464. is Lord.

  465. And demonstrating that

  466. through their actions.

  467. And in this case

  468. healing people.

  469. And as a result

  470. people believed.

  471. Multitudes believed.

  472. And yet we read

  473. in verse 17.

  474. But the high priest

  475. rose up

  476. and all who were with him

  477. that is the party

  478. of the Sadducees

  479. they were filled

  480. with jealousy

  481. and they arrested

  482. the apostles

  483. and put them

  484. in the public prison.

  485. And they were arrested

  486. but what was their crime?

  487. Their only crime

  488. was making the blind see

  489. the deaf hear

  490. the lame walk.

  491. Their only crime

  492. was preaching good news

  493. that there's forgiveness

  494. of sins

  495. and eternal life

  496. only in the name of Jesus.

  497. The apostles

  498. were simply obeying God

  499. but the rulers

  500. were filled with jealousy.

  501. They were in power

  502. and they wanted

  503. to keep it.

  504. They did the same thing

  505. in chapter 4.

  506. They're jealous again

  507. and so they arrest

  508. the apostles again.

  509. It's deja vu.

  510. And it's all because

  511. the only crime

  512. the apostles committed

  513. was pointing people

  514. to Jesus.

  515. They would not stop

  516. talking about him

  517. and acting like it.

  518. Jesus promised us

  519. if they persecute me

  520. they will also persecute you.

  521. And so we can

  522. we know

  523. we will face opposition.

  524. But when that happens

  525. when persecution comes

  526. when people oppose it

  527. let it be for doing good

  528. not because we're going

  529. out of our way

  530. and being mean.

  531. Let it be for doing good

  532. like the apostles.

  533. A few decades later

  534. the apostle Paul

  535. wrote a letter

  536. in the book of 1 Peter.

  537. In it he says

  538. be holy

  539. as God is holy.

  540. Be holy

  541. since God is holy

  542. and so that

  543. you may have

  544. a good conscience.

  545. When people oppose you

  546. you may have

  547. a good conscience.

  548. so that when you're

  549. slandered

  550. those who revile

  551. your good behavior

  552. in Jesus Christ

  553. may be put to shame.

  554. For it is better

  555. to suffer for doing evil

  556. if that should be

  557. God's will

  558. than for doing good.

  559. Give people nothing

  560. to criticize

  561. our lives about

  562. except for good conduct.

  563. Let our only crime

  564. be obeying God

  565. and talking about him.

  566. That's what Peter did

  567. and he wrote later

  568. in 1 Peter

  569. from experience.

  570. The apostles

  571. they had nothing to fear

  572. because they knew

  573. they were obeying God

  574. they were doing

  575. what's right.

  576. Their only crime

  577. was obeying God

  578. and they were

  579. persecuted for it.

  580. Now the question

  581. for us is

  582. do we have

  583. that same boldness

  584. also?

  585. Are we bold

  586. to preach Christ

  587. with a good conscience

  588. or are we nervous

  589. because of how

  590. we live our lives

  591. and how we act

  592. because of our conduct?

  593. Have you ever felt

  594. I'm a terrible Christian

  595. I'm a bad witness

  596. I can't share

  597. the gospel

  598. right?

  599. James likes to say

  600. I don't want my teaching

  601. to outrun my living

  602. and sometimes

  603. but what happens

  604. is when your teaching

  605. does outrun your living

  606. when the way we act

  607. doesn't match up

  608. with what we say

  609. the result then

  610. is we want to stop

  611. talking

  612. we want to stop

  613. preaching

  614. right?

  615. You might think

  616. I'm such a bad example

  617. I can't let people

  618. know I'm a Christian

  619. let alone

  620. tell them about the gospel

  621. and I get it

  622. right?

  623. We don't want

  624. to be hypocrites

  625. because if you just

  626. cussed out your co-worker

  627. it's awkward to say

  628. hey screw you

  629. want to come to church

  630. on Sunday?

  631. That doesn't work

  632. it's hard to preach

  633. the gospel

  634. when you know

  635. they'll ask

  636. if Jesus is so good

  637. then why did you

  638. cheat on your wife?

  639. Why'd you do that?

  640. How is he Lord?

  641. we spoke last week

  642. about having integrity

  643. and God showed us

  644. in Acts 5

  645. that his people

  646. must be holy

  647. so absolutely

  648. let us not be hypocrites

  649. saying one thing

  650. and doing another

  651. are we held back

  652. in our scattering

  653. because of the way

  654. we live our lives?

  655. But what should we do

  656. when we think

  657. I'm not good enough

  658. to preach the gospel

  659. what should we do?

  660. Remember the gospel

  661. isn't just good news

  662. for others

  663. but for ourselves

  664. as well

  665. if you don't feel like

  666. you can be Peter

  667. remember we've talked

  668. about this also

  669. remember where Peter started

  670. Peter told Jesus

  671. I'll never deny you

  672. but what happened?

  673. Jesus was arrested

  674. and Peter was scared

  675. of this little girl

  676. he was scared

  677. to admit to a little girl

  678. a servant girl

  679. that he knew Jesus

  680. and after denying

  681. nine Jesus three times

  682. the rooster crowed

  683. and Peter wept bitterly

  684. because he considered himself

  685. an unworthy follower

  686. and witness of Christ

  687. before Peter was a bold witness

  688. he was a witness

  689. like that crippled man

  690. in Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  691. someone who was sick

  692. but who Jesus healed

  693. and we're the same

  694. when we follow Christ

  695. the spirit transforms us

  696. and people will see

  697. our lives changed

  698. we have new life

  699. the spirit of God

  700. is in us

  701. and he empowers us

  702. he changes us

  703. to do good

  704. so that we can be bold witnesses

  705. with a clean conscience

  706. let's aim to do good

  707. be holy as God is holy

  708. that's how we can face opposition

  709. with boldness firstly

  710. number two

  711. when we face opposition

  712. we can be bold

  713. because we know

  714. that God is in control

  715. we can face opposition

  716. because God is in control

  717. again in verse 17

  718. the religious rulers

  719. the high priests

  720. the Sadducees

  721. these guys

  722. because they were jealous

  723. and they arrested the apostles

  724. and put them in prison

  725. in verse 19

  726. it says

  727. during the night

  728. an angel of the Lord

  729. opened the prison doors

  730. and brought them out

  731. and said

  732. go and stand in the temple

  733. and speak to the people

  734. all the words of this life

  735. and when they heard this

  736. they entered the temple

  737. at daybreak

  738. and began to teach

  739. see

  740. the rulers arrested

  741. the apostles

  742. to stop them from preaching

  743. but God

  744. he sends an angel

  745. to bust them out of jail

  746. the apostles

  747. the rulers

  748. trying to stop them

  749. but God can't be stopped

  750. God sends this angel

  751. to bring them out of jail

  752. and he commands them

  753. the thing that they arrested you to do

  754. just go and do it again

  755. go into the temple

  756. go back to the temple

  757. and keep preaching

  758. the gospel that brings life

  759. keep preaching

  760. the words of life

  761. so the apostles obey

  762. and they do it

  763. meanwhile

  764. those who arrested the apostles

  765. went home

  766. they probably had no clue

  767. what happened

  768. they had a good night's sleep

  769. they were probably smug

  770. about catching these apostles again

  771. licking their lips

  772. about what to do with them

  773. right

  774. but the next morning

  775. they reconvened to figure out

  776. what's going on

  777. what to do with them

  778. and you know

  779. at the gathering

  780. we love God's word

  781. that's why we stand

  782. as a small gesture

  783. out of reverence

  784. for God's word

  785. we have reverence

  786. but sometimes the Bible

  787. is pretty funny

  788. sometimes God's pretty funny

  789. and if I made a list

  790. I think this passage

  791. would be up there

  792. on that goofy list

  793. of some of the funniest

  794. passages in the Bible

  795. it doesn't beat John 20

  796. where John slips in

  797. hey I'm faster

  798. I outran Peter

  799. or Acts 20

  800. where Paul preaches

  801. a sermon so boring

  802. that someone falls out

  803. the window and dies

  804. he bores someone to death

  805. hope that doesn't happen today

  806. but this passage

  807. is kind of up there

  808. on the goofy list

  809. right

  810. the book of Acts

  811. is accurate history

  812. but that doesn't mean

  813. it's boring

  814. Luke had some fun with it

  815. to show what happens

  816. to those who oppose

  817. the sovereign God

  818. right

  819. verse 21 says

  820. the ruling council

  821. sent to have the apostles

  822. brought from prison

  823. but when the officers came

  824. they did not find them

  825. in prison

  826. so they returned

  827. and reported

  828. we found the prison

  829. securely locked

  830. and the guards

  831. standing at the doors

  832. but when we opened them

  833. we found no one inside

  834. now when the captain

  835. of the temple

  836. and the chief priest

  837. heard these words

  838. they were greatly

  839. perplexed about them

  840. wondering what this

  841. would come to

  842. and someone came to them

  843. and said

  844. look the men

  845. whom you put in prison

  846. are standing in the temple

  847. and teaching the people

  848. now as I was reading

  849. all this earlier

  850. preparing for this

  851. I just wish there was

  852. some cartoon sound effects

  853. because this is

  854. it's like a chase scene

  855. straight out of Tom and Jerry

  856. right

  857. it's some Looney Tunes nonsense

  858. where Wally Coyote

  859. he springs a trap

  860. and then he catches

  861. the road runner

  862. but then you blink

  863. and next thing you know

  864. the apostles

  865. they're like

  866. meep meep

  867. right in the temple

  868. right

  869. the rulers

  870. they're all smug

  871. scheming at their senate meeting

  872. what they'll do

  873. with the apostles

  874. but the apostles

  875. they put them on skates

  876. the rulers are like

  877. what

  878. what do you mean

  879. the prison's empty

  880. where are they

  881. who's got eyes on them

  882. these are the priests

  883. the Sadducees

  884. the people who've studied

  885. God's word

  886. but they were puzzled

  887. they were marveling

  888. they're wondering

  889. how could this happen

  890. does anyone know someone

  891. who sets captives free

  892. and breaks every chain

  893. who could have done this

  894. I don't know

  895. I'm puzzled

  896. and then someone runs in

  897. and says

  898. hey you know the guys

  899. that you arrested

  900. and told them not

  901. to preach about Jesus

  902. and then arrested again

  903. because they kept

  904. preaching about Jesus

  905. well you won't believe it

  906. they're preaching about Jesus

  907. oh no they're not hiding

  908. you know that public place

  909. that you're responsible for

  910. as the high priest

  911. the temple that you're

  912. meant to be watching

  913. well they're right there

  914. out in the open

  915. right

  916. while you're scheming

  917. against them

  918. it's all a clown show

  919. right

  920. these guys

  921. they're responsible

  922. for the temple

  923. but they're oblivious

  924. to what's going on

  925. they're scratching

  926. their heads

  927. right

  928. while the apostles

  929. are right under

  930. their noses

  931. they're like looking

  932. for their sunglasses

  933. on top of their heads

  934. that's how goofy

  935. they are

  936. right

  937. and that's a clear

  938. picture of what happens

  939. when people oppose God

  940. God is absolutely

  941. and indisputably

  942. in control

  943. it's not a fair fight

  944. between the rulers

  945. and the apostles

  946. God simply wins

  947. there's no contest

  948. Psalm 37 says

  949. the wicked plot

  950. against the righteous

  951. but the Lord laughs

  952. at the wicked

  953. for he sees

  954. his day is coming

  955. it's not a fair fight

  956. you might have seen

  957. after service

  958. the kids like to run around

  959. and play on the bean bags

  960. like to play and wrestle

  961. and I like to play around

  962. with them

  963. but it's not a fight

  964. right

  965. if Sam

  966. seriously thought

  967. he could pin me down

  968. he could wrestle me

  969. to the ground

  970. I had to laugh

  971. it's not a fight

  972. it's no contest

  973. we're just playing

  974. when we follow Christ

  975. we will face opposition

  976. but we can have confidence

  977. knowing that God

  978. is sovereign

  979. he always wins

  980. we sang earlier

  981. who can stop

  982. the Lord Almighty

  983. who can oppose him

  984. who can stop

  985. the Lord Almighty

  986. that's what we mean

  987. when we say

  988. that God is sovereign

  989. nobody can stop our God

  990. he's in control

  991. over everything

  992. every situation

  993. every detail

  994. of your life

  995. even in opposition

  996. he's in control

  997. and no one

  998. can stop him

  999. what would it change

  1000. for us to know

  1001. that God's in control

  1002. he's in control

  1003. and watching over

  1004. and guiding us

  1005. in our life

1006. and he cares for us

1007. that even when we face

  1008. opposition

1009. no one can stop him

  1010. it's the same idea

  1011. if we read on

  1012. to verse 28

  1013. the rulers

  1014. grab the apostles

  1015. from the temple

  1016. and they say

  1017. we strictly charge you

  1018. not to teach

  1019. in this name

  1020. yet here

  1021. you have filled

  1022. Jerusalem

  1023. with your teaching

  1024. and I wish

  1025. I could say

  1026. we have filled

  1027. Hong Kong

  1028. with teaching

  1029. but then the apostles

  1030. reply

  1031. we must obey God

  1032. rather than men

  1033. we must obey God

  1034. rather than men

  1035. rather than you guys

  1036. it's easy to say

  1037. we follow Jesus

  1038. when we don't have

1039. any skin in the game

  1040. but the real test

1041. is what will we do

  1042. when we face opposition

  1043. and obeying God

  1044. will cost us

  1045. are there areas

  1046. in our life

  1047. where you need to

  1048. obey God

  1049. rather than men

  1050. or do we need

  1051. to obey God

  1052. rather than our hearts

  1053. our own hearts

  1054. our fears

  1055. our insecurities

  1056. our comforts

  1057. rather than the fear

  1058. rather than

  1059. obey God

  1060. rather than

  1061. trying to fit in

  1062. or feeling comfortable

  1063. and more specifically

  1064. here

  1065. God commanded

  1066. the apostles

  1067. to go preach

  1068. the gospel

  1069. that's what they're

  1070. meant to obey

  1071. that's what it says

  1072. in verse 20

  1073. the angels

  1074. free them

  1075. and told them

1076. to go into the temple

  1077. and preach

  1078. we don't get arrested

  1079. on a daily basis

  1080. like the apostles

  1081. but the most common

  1082. opposition we face

  1083. today perhaps

  1084. is fear

  1085. and rejection

  1086. we think to ourselves

  1087. oh that person

  1088. is probably not

  1089. interested in God

  1090. they're not interested

  1091. in the gospel

1092. they don't care about God

  1093. they're maybe hostile

  1094. to God

1095. so they'll laugh at me

1096. they'll be hostile to me

  1097. they'll reject me

  1098. how does it change

  1099. to know that

  1100. we serve

  1101. an unstoppable God

  1102. who breaks every chain

1103. and sets the captives free

1104. that they might reject us

  1105. but God won't stop

  1106. to chase down

  1107. all his lost sheep

  1108. he knows his sheep

1109. and they hear his voice

  1110. he's in control

  1111. over our hearts

  1112. over their hearts

1113. and the spirit of God

1114. is with us as witnesses

  1115. that's what it says

  1116. in verse 34

  1117. verse 32

  1118. it may be impossible

  1119. on our own

  1120. to change hearts

  1121. but we're not

  1122. on our own

  1123. God himself

  1124. goes before us

  1125. the spirit of God

  1126. is witnesses

  1127. along with us

  1128. and so we must

  1129. obey God

  1130. speak the message

  1131. of life

  1132. rather than

  1133. obeying our fears

  1134. our insecurities

  1135. and our small view

  1136. of God

  1137. is there someone

  1138. that you think

  1139. that person will never

  1140. believe in God

1141. that person's too far gone

  1142. right

  1143. that person will definitely

  1144. say no

  1145. could be a friend

  1146. a grumpy relative

  1147. a world leader perhaps

  1148. remember

  1149. God

  1150. God

  1151. is unstoppable

  1152. even if we don't

  1153. obey him

1154. these rocks will cry out

  1155. he's a God

  1156. that is in control

  1157. in control

  1158. over every heart

  1159. what's God calling

  1160. to do

  1161. is there someone

  1162. that you think

  1163. it's the least likely

  1164. for them to

  1165. believe in God

  1166. wouldn't you want

  1167. to see God

  1168. work

  1169. wouldn't you want

  1170. to see God

  1171. change that least likely

  1172. person's heart

  1173. because God's able

  1174. to do it

  1175. is there someone

  1176. on your heart

  1177. let's carry on

  1178. so the apostles

  1179. they must obey God

  1180. because the gospel

  1181. is good news

  1182. and that good news

  1183. must be shared

  1184. and again

  1185. the gospel is simple

  1186. we've been saying that

1187. in the last few weeks

1188. there's two parts to it

  1189. sin and savior

1190. and we see the same thing

  1191. again in verse 30

  1192. the apostles say

  1193. you sinned

  1194. by crucifying Jesus

  1195. on the cross

  1196. but God raised him

  1197. from the dead

  1198. and exalted him

  1199. to glory and power

  1200. at his right hand

  1201. as leader and savior

  1202. right

  1203. the gospel is that

  1204. we've all sinned

  1205. and deserve death

1206. but Jesus is our savior

  1207. who died and rose

  1208. that God exalted

1209. so that we may be

  1210. forgiven of our sins

  1211. and given new life

  1212. that's the gospel

1213. and then in verse 33

  1214. when the rulers

  1215. heard this

  1216. they were enraged

  1217. and wanted to kill

  1218. the apostles

  1219. and I said before

  1220. the gospel is offensive

  1221. it was offensive

  1222. here to the point

  1223. that the rulers

  1224. want to kill them

1225. but God is in control

  1226. yet again

  1227. he reigns

  1228. God uses a Pharisee

  1229. a guy named Gamaliel

1230. to argue for their release

  1231. and this Pharisee Gamaliel

  1232. he says

  1233. his argument goes

  1234. like this

  1235. let's be careful

  1236. let's wait and see

  1237. let's wait and see

  1238. what happens

  1239. because this isn't

  1240. the first time

  1241. a cult sprang up

1242. this isn't the first time

  1243. someone started

  1244. a movement

  1245. it happened twice

  1246. right

  1247. there's a guy

  1248. named Thutis

  1249. he got 400 followers

  1250. but then he died

1251. and that was the end

  1252. of that

  1253. there was another guy

  1254. Judas the Galilean

  1255. he had a following

  1256. but then he died

1257. and that was the end

  1258. of that

  1259. that all fell apart

  1260. and then Gamaliel says

  1261. in verse 38

1262. keep away from these men

  1263. and let them alone

  1264. for if this plan

  1265. or this undertaking

  1266. is of man

  1267. it will fail

1268. but if it is of God

1269. you will not be able

  1270. to overthrow them

1271. you might even be found

  1272. opposing God

  1273. Gamaliel

  1274. he's saying

  1275. the founder of all

  1276. these movements

  1277. they died

1278. and that was the end

  1279. of that

  1280. that's how it ends

1281. let's see if this movement

1282. this thing also fizzles out

  1283. Gamaliel

  1284. didn't believe in Jesus

  1285. yet he still knew

  1286. you can't oppose God

  1287. he knew

1288. he only saw the beginning

  1289. of this movement

  1290. yet he knew

  1291. that if this undertaking

  1292. is of God

  1293. it will surely secede

  1294. and if even Gamaliel

  1295. believed that

  1296. how much more

  1297. should we have conviction

  1298. that our God

  1299. can't be stopped

  1300. that our God

  1301. will win

  1302. he will finish

  1303. the good work

  1304. he started

  1305. he will make sure

  1306. every knee will bow

1307. at the name of Jesus

  1308. because unlike Gamaliel

  1309. we know the rest

  1310. of the story

  1311. those two other

  1312. movements fizzled out

  1313. but when Jesus died

1314. that was not the end

  1315. remember when people

  1316. oppose us

1317. we're not the only ones

  1318. who were persecuted

  1319. they arrested the apostles

  1320. and they arrested

  1321. Jesus too

  1322. the rulers

  1323. they tried opposing God

  1324. by killing Jesus

  1325. but God put them

  1326. to shame

  1327. triumphing over them

  1328. by the blood

  1329. of his cross

  1330. they killed Jesus

  1331. but God raised him

  1332. from the dead

  1333. and exalted him

  1334. at his right hand

  1335. as leader and savior

1336. and now in the year 2025

  1337. we can look back

  1338. on 2000 years

  1339. of history

  1340. showing that God

1341. was faithful to his church

  1342. Jesus said

  1343. on this rock

1344. I will build my church

1345. and the gates of hell

1346. will not prevail against it

  1347. he was faithful then

1348. and he will be faithful now

  1349. and I love how

1350. me he and the team

  1351. led us in worship

  1352. singing

  1353. I sought the Lord

  1354. and he heard

  1355. and he answered

  1356. I sought the Lord

  1357. and he heard

  1358. and he answered

1359. can we think of times

1360. when we were in trouble

  1361. when we sought God

  1362. he heard

  1363. and he answered

1364. when we were far from him

  1365. when we were in

  1366. in trouble

1367. when we were feeling depressed

  1368. when we were anxious

  1369. about our jobs

  1370. when we were anxious

  1371. about relationships

1372. and I sought the Lord

  1373. and he heard

  1374. and he answered

  1375. he answered those situations

1376. and he drew me to him

1377. and I love how me

1378. he led us to sing

  1379. I will again

1380. I sought him in the past

1381. and now I will again

  1382. seek the Lord

  1383. and I believe

1384. that he will answer again

  1385. I sought him before

1386. and I will seek him again

1387. because he was faithful then

1388. he will be faithful now

  1389. that's what I believe

  1390. God is in control

  1391. he can't be stopped

1392. and that gives us boldness

  1393. to face opposition

  1394. and lastly

  1395. we see here also

  1396. in this passage

1397. that we can be bold

  1398. against opposition

1399. when we rejoice in Christ

  1400. when we love Christ

  1401. and rejoice in Christ

  1402. and rejoice in suffering

  1403. with Christ

  1404. that gives us boldness

  1405. to face opposition

  1406. let's read on

  1407. so Gamaliel

  1408. he made his argument

  1409. he said

  1410. we can't oppose God

  1411. everyone believes him

  1412. verse 39 says

  1413. he convinced them all

  1414. they took his advice

  1415. they accepted his argument

  1416. and they followed

  1417. Gamaliel's advice

  1418. right so great

  1419. God can't be stopped

  1420. so that means

1421. the apostles are off the hook

  1422. right God's in control

  1423. and the apostles

  1424. are going to get

  1425. away scot free right

  1426. but no

1427. we read in verse 40

  1428. and when they had

  1429. called in the apostles

  1430. they beat them

  1431. and charged them

  1432. not to speak

1433. in the name of Jesus

  1434. and let them go

  1435. they beat the apostles

  1436. that means they likely

  1437. flogged them

1438. 39 times with the whip

  1439. they beat them

  1440. right

  1441. and I find this

  1442. so strange

  1443. because Gamaliel

  1444. he sounded like

  1445. a pretty reasonable guy

  1446. he was saying

  1447. pretty reasonable things

  1448. presenting a pretty

  1449. rational argument

  1450. but up until now

1451. it was so far so good

  1452. but what happens next

  1453. makes no sense

  1454. right

  1455. there's no logic

  1456. in saying

  1457. we can't oppose God

  1458. but let's

  1459. let's just beat

  1460. these guys up anyway

  1461. right

  1462. it goes to show

  1463. it wasn't Gamaliel

  1464. that saved them

  1465. it was all God

  1466. and yet God

  1467. allowed them

  1468. to suffer

  1469. there's something else

  1470. that's strange

  1471. verse 41 says

  1472. that

  1473. then the apostles

  1474. left the presence

  1475. of the council

  1476. after they were beat

  1477. they left

  1478. rejoicing

  1479. that they were

  1480. counted worthy

  1481. to suffer dishonor

  1482. for the name

1483. after they were beat up

  1484. they left rejoicing

  1485. that they were

  1486. counted worthy

  1487. right

  1488. if you got punched

  1489. in the face

1490. you got kicked in the shin

  1491. how many of you

  1492. would just throw

  1493. a party after that

  1494. well that's what

  1495. the apostles did

  1496. they were beaten

  1497. black and blue

  1498. but they didn't

  1499. complain

  1500. they didn't

  1501. strike back

  1502. rather they

  1503. rejoiced

  1504. this is weird

  1505. they rejoiced

  1506. not because

  1507. they're beating up

  1508. no one likes that

1509. no one likes to get hit

  1510. they rejoiced

  1511. because

  1512. it says

  1513. they were counted

  1514. worthy

  1515. to suffer

  1516. dishonor

  1517. for the name

  1518. they were counted

  1519. worthy

  1520. and they rejoiced

  1521. because they suffered

  1522. for Christ

  1523. they suffered

  1524. for him

  1525. and yet

  1526. remained faithful

  1527. and again

  1528. Peter

  1529. the apostle

  1530. who was beat up

  1531. here

  1532. he writes

  1533. later in

  1534. in 1st Peter

  1535. chapter 4

  1536. he writes saying

  1537. rejoice

  1538. insofar

  1539. as you share

  1540. Christ's sufferings

  1541. that you may

  1542. also rejoice

  1543. and be glad

  1544. when his glory

  1545. is revealed

  1546. if you are

  1547. insulted

  1548. for the name

  1549. of Christ

  1550. you are blessed

  1551. because the spirit

  1552. of glory

  1553. and of God

  1554. rests upon you

  1555. Peter is saying

  1556. rejoice when you

  1557. suffer

  1558. when you face

  1559. opposition

  1560. because that's

  1561. because

  1562. when we suffer

  1563. and endure

  1564. that shows

  1565. that we are

  1566. united with Christ

  1567. that we really

  1568. are followers

  1569. of Christ

  1570. and that the spirit

  1571. the holy spirit

  1572. is within us

  1573. and is there

  1574. anything better

  1575. than that

  1576. to know

  1577. that we're

  1578. in Christ

  1579. and to have

  1580. the spirit

  1581. of God

  1582. in us

  1583. the holy God

  1584. that Moses

  1585. was scared

  1586. to approach

  1587. in the burning

  1588. bush

  1589. he lives

  1590. in us

  1591. what's better

  1592. than that

  1593. James

  1594. reminded us

  1595. previously

  1596. that when we

  1597. scatter

  1598. we serve

  1599. let's not do it

  1600. out of the goodness

  1601. of our hearts

  1602. let's not do it

  1603. because we want

  1604. to do something

  1605. good for God

  1606. serve out of the

  1607. goodness of our hearts

  1608. and he says

  1609. let's scatter

  1610. instead because

  1611. we love Jesus

  1612. that's the most

  1613. important thing

  1614. to love Jesus

  1615. and want him

  1616. more than

  1617. anything

  1618. and in the same

  1619. way

  1620. we can try

  1621. all we want

  1622. to be bold

  1623. but we can't

  1624. have boldness

  1625. to obey

  1626. just by trusting

  1627. in God's sovereignty

  1628. and trust

  1629. in trying to be

  1630. holy and doing good

  1631. we have boldness

  1632. when we have

  1633. this surpassing

  1634. love for Christ

  1635. when we think

  1636. to live is Christ

1637. and to die is gain

  1638. that's what the

  1639. apostles had

  1640. that's what gives

  1641. them boldness

  1642. when they rejoice

  1643. in suffering

  1644. to be bold

  1645. to obey

  1646. even when facing

  1647. opposition

  1648. to be bold

  1649. when we love

  1650. Jesus

  1651. and our hearts

  1652. want nothing more

  1653. than to be found

  1654. in him

  1655. to be united

  1656. with him

  1657. to be identified

  1658. with him

  1659. even suffer

  1660. for him

  1661. now it might

  1662. seem like a tall

  1663. task for us

  1664. to suffer for Christ

  1665. maybe you think

  1666. we're not there yet

  1667. I don't even know

  1668. if people were

  1669. arresting me

  1670. maybe I tap out

  1671. if they beat me

  1672. I might just

  1673. yeah I don't think

  1674. I could do it

  1675. and I definitely

  1676. couldn't rejoice

  1677. in someone doing that

  1678. maybe

  1679. rejoicing in suffering

  1680. that seems like

  1681. a stretch

  1682. but if we can't

  1683. rejoice in suffering

1684. maybe as a first step

  1685. if we can't rejoice

  1686. in suffering

  1687. with Christ

  1688. how about let's try

  1689. to rejoice

  1690. in being seen

  1691. with Christ

  1692. if we can't rejoice

  1693. in suffering

  1694. with him

  1695. let's rejoice

  1696. in being seen

  1697. with him

  1698. being identified

  1699. with him

  1700. let's be proud

  1701. of being

  1702. followers of Christ

  1703. I was talking

  1704. to some people

  1705. recently

  1706. about sharing

  1707. the gospel

  1708. at work

  1709. or at school

  1710. sometimes it's hard

  1711. because everyone's

  1712. busy working

  1713. and you can't

  1714. really at your

  1715. all staff meeting

  1716. in the morning

  1717. start reading

  1718. from Acts

  1719. or reading

  1720. just preaching

  1721. the gospel

  1722. that's not

  1723. quite the environment

  1724. and sometimes

  1725. it's weird to talk

  1726. about religion

  1727. at work

  1728. there's a cultural

  1729. stigma against it

  1730. because no one

  1731. does that

  1732. we're meant

  1733. to be professionals

  1734. and I get that

  1735. I've been there

  1736. where I want

  1737. to share the gospel

  1738. at work

  1739. but I don't

  1740. quite know how

  1741. there's no

  1742. it seems to be

  1743. no opportunity

  1744. I don't know

  1745. how to make it

  1746. natural

  1747. but while we can't

  1748. share the full gospel

  1749. with everyone

  1750. at our staff meeting

  1751. with everyone

  1752. we meet

  1753. we can at least

  1754. take every opportunity

  1755. we can

  1756. to be seen

  1757. with Christ

  1758. to identify

  1759. with him

  1760. to rejoice

  1761. at being seen

  1762. with Christ

  1763. to share that

  1764. we're Christians

  1765. and we're proud

  1766. of it

  1767. it's not something

  1768. that we're ashamed

  1769. of

  1770. that we're shoving

  1771. in the corner

  1772. but I am proud

  1773. to be a follower

  1774. of Christ

  1775. and those opportunities

  1776. come up pretty naturally

  1777. I said earlier

  1778. what did you do

  1779. this weekend

1780. you can say a list

  1781. of other things

  1782. but how about

  1783. yeah

  1784. I went to church

  1785. and I worshipped

  1786. to worship Jesus

  1787. and that's actually

1788. a highlight of my week

  1789. I love my brothers

  1790. and sisters

  1791. and I love worshipping

  1792. my God

  1793. if Jesus is Lord

  1794. if he's so important

  1795. we can be proud

1796. to be seen with him

  1797. to be identified

  1798. with him

1799. and not to do it

  1800. nervously

  1801. but to say it

  1802. with a smile

  1803. make it clear

  1804. that he is Lord

  1805. not someone

  1806. we're ashamed of

  1807. before rejoicing

  1808. in suffering

  1809. with Christ

  1810. let us rejoice

  1811. in being seen

  1812. with Christ

  1813. even where

  1814. we can't share

  1815. the gospel

  1816. in depth

  1817. you can show

  1818. in your life

  1819. you can show

  1820. by the things

  1821. you talk about

  1822. that Jesus

  1823. is everything

1824. that he is your joy

1825. that he is your treasure

1826. and that he is a God

  1827. worth following

  1828. and the more

  1829. our lives

  1830. are centered

  1831. around him

  1832. the more naturally

  1833. we have opportunities

  1834. to talk about him

  1835. for example

  1836. I love my wife

  1837. and my life

  1838. is so intertwined

  1839. with hers

  1840. so when I'm talking

  1841. when we're in conversation

  1842. even now

1843. it just comes up naturally

1844. it doesn't take you long

  1845. for you guys

1846. to know that I'm married

  1847. because she's a big part

  1848. of my life

  1849. and I'll just

  1850. talk about her

  1851. naturally

  1852. and so it is

  1853. with Christ

  1854. the more

  1855. we love him

  1856. the more our lives

  1857. revolve around him

  1858. the more we find

  1859. opportunities

  1860. to share

  1861. about him

  1862. the more we rejoice

  1863. in being seen

  1864. with Christ

1865. the more that we are

  1866. we love Christ

  1867. the more opportunities

  1868. there will be

  1869. to share about him

  1870. and perhaps

  1871. even rejoice

  1872. to suffer

  1873. for him

  1874. let's be proud

  1875. to identify

  1876. with Jesus

  1877. rejoice to be seen

  1878. with him

  1879. rejoice to suffer

  1880. for him

  1881. and we'll finish off

  1882. by reading verse 42

  1883. it says this

  1884. and every day

  1885. in the temple

  1886. and from house

  1887. to house

  1888. they did not cease

  1889. teaching and preaching

  1890. that the Christ

  1891. is Jesus

  1892. they didn't cease

  1893. teaching and preaching

  1894. that the Christ

  1895. is Jesus

1896. now as I was reading

  1897. this to prepare

1898. by the time I got

  1899. to verse 42

  1900. I was thinking

  1901. man Luke

  1902. almost didn't need

  1903. to write this verse

  1904. he almost didn't need

  1905. to write this verse

  1906. because it's so obvious

  1907. it's so obvious

  1908. what they were going

  1909. to do

  1910. right

  1911. the apostles

  1912. they arrested

  1913. for healing the sick

  1914. and preaching the gospel

  1915. the authorities

  1916. arrested them

  1917. for doing what's good

1918. but God couldn't be stopped

  1919. God's in control

  1920. God busted them

  1921. out of jail

  1922. and told them

  1923. keep preaching

  1924. the gospel

  1925. and the apostles say

  1926. we must obey God

  1927. rather than men

  1928. we must keep preaching

  1929. and they're almost

  1930. killed for that

1931. but God saves them again

  1932. they're not killed

1933. but they're beaten up instead

1934. they're beaten half to death

  1935. but rather than

  1936. complaining about it

  1937. they rejoice

  1938. they rejoice

  1939. that they were worthy

  1940. to suffer for Christ

  1941. that they're worthy

1942. to be seen with him

  1943. and suffer for him

  1944. right

  1945. and after all that

  1946. after all that

  1947. what do you think

  1948. the apostles did

  1949. that they go home

  1950. and hide

  1951. of course not

1952. of course they get preaching

  1953. of course every day

  1954. everywhere

  1955. in homes

  1956. and in the temples

  1957. they did not cease

  1958. teaching and preaching

1959. that Jesus is the Christ

  1960. of course they did

  1961. God can't be stopped

1962. and neither can these guys

  1963. they won't stop

  1964. preaching the gospel

1965. and may that be true

  1966. for us

  1967. may it be true

  1968. for us as well

  1969. that when we rejoice

  1970. in Christ

1971. when he is our treasure

  1972. and when we trust

  1973. that God's in control

1974. that he can't be stopped

1975. and he is on our side

1976. when we have a clean conscience

1977. knowing that we're obeying God

  1978. we're doing what's right

  1979. right

  1980. that's when we'll be bold witnesses

  1981. that's when we'll be bold

  1982. to obey God

  1983. despite opposition

  1984. and persecution

1985. let it be true for us

  1986. that when people look

  1987. at our lives

1988. when they really get to know us

  1989. they'll say

1990. man of course this guy

1991. of course they're preaching Christ

1992. of course he won't stop

1993. of course he won't stop

1994. may that be true for us

  1995. let's pray

  1996. God you are worthy

1997. you are God above everything

1998. who can stop the Lord Almighty

  1999. no one

2000. no one could stop you

  2001. when they killed Jesus

2002. and put him to death

  2003. on the cross

2004. you raised him from the dead

  2005. and exalted him

  2006. above every name

2007. and every knee will bow to him

2008. God we pray for boldness

  2009. just like the church

2010. prayed in Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  2011. we pray for boldness

  2012. we pray for conviction

2013. that people need to hear

  2014. about your son

2015. that they have to know

  2016. that you are God

  2017. you are holy

2018. you are gracious to us

2019. and you give us life

  2020. in Jesus name

  2021. Lord make us holy

  2022. as you are holy

  2023. and give us boldness

  2024. help us to trust

2025. that I sought the Lord

  2026. he heard

  2027. he answered

2028. and he will answer again

2029. you are sovereign over all

  2030. you will answer me

  2031. and you are able

  2032. you are able

  2033. to make your gospel

2034. reach the ends of the earth

2035. and give us joy in you

  2036. give us joy

  2037. Lord we want Christ

  2038. to be our treasure

2039. we want to sell everything

  2040. that we have

  2041. and follow you

  2042. to have that heart

2043. that is willing to do that

2044. would you be the treasure

  2045. hidden in the field

2046. and so make us bold

  2047. help us to rejoice

2048. in being seen with you

  2049. make us proud

  2050. we are Christian

2051. that I am a follower of Christ

  2052. that is my identity

  2053. I am a child of God

  2054. let us be proud

  2055. to share that

  2056. with everyone around us

  2057. pray all this

  2058. in Jesus name

  2059. amen

2060. church do we believe that

2061. that he is the lion

  2062. and the lamb

  2063. he is the lion

  2064. with power

  2065. the lion of Judah

  2066. the lion of David

  2067. this king

  2068. that will reign

  2069. who can't be stopped

  2070. who will tear apart

  2071. every enemy

  2072. in his path

2073. that's the God we serve

  2074. that's the

  2075. that's Jesus

  2076. the Lord we serve

2077. but at the same time

2078. the lamb that was slain

  2079. who humbled himself

  2080. becoming obedient

2081. even to the point of death

2082. even death on the cross

2083. so that at the name of Jesus

  2084. every knee should bow

  2085. in heaven

  2086. and on earth

  2087. and under the earth

  2088. and every tongue proclaim

2089. that Jesus Christ is Lord

2090. to the glory of God

  2091. our Father

2092. that's the Lord we serve

2093. the lion and the lamb

  2094. the unstoppable God

  2095. who can stop

  2096. the Lord Almighty

  2097. do we believe that

  2098. do we believe that

  2099. if so

  2100. let's go out

  2101. with boldness

  2102. let's go out

  2103. with boldness

  2104. looking to him

  2105. seeking him

  2106. knowing that

2107. his spirit is with us

2108. his spirit lives in us

2109. and he can't be stopped

  2110. he wants us

  2111. to go

  2112. and be lights

  2113. to be burning bushes

  2114. as we scatter

  2115. as we go off

  2116. into our weeks

  2117. and

  2118. it's not our mission

  2119. it's God's mission

2120. as much as we want

  2121. our friends and family

2122. we want them to know Jesus

  2123. so much more

  2124. how much more

  2125. does the Father

  2126. who sent his Son

2127. to die for the sins

  2128. of the world

  2129. how much more

2130. does he want his Son

  2131. to be lifted up

  2132. and glorified

  2133. among every tribe

  2134. nation and tongue

2135. and he will get the glory

  2136. every knee will bow

  2137. every tongue will confess

2138. that is what we sang

2139. that is what we believe

2140. so let's live like that

  2141. let's live with that

  2142. boldness and confidence

  2143. and be bold witnesses

  2144. of Christ

  2145. that takes us through

2146. to the end of Acts

  2147. for now

  2148. where I know

  2149. we stopped at Acts

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  2150. chapter 5

  2151. for today

  2152. we'll be taking a break

  2153. this summer

  2154. we're going to take a pause

  2155. we'll be back

  2156. into the fall

  2157. in Acts

  2158. but for the next

  2159. several weeks

  2160. in the summer

  2161. we'll be going

  2162. through a series

  2163. on some big questions

  2164. on apologetics

  2165. Tim Keller

  2166. likes to say

  2167. before we answer

  2168. the what

  2169. we can tell people

  2170. the what

  2171. what should they believe

  2172. apologetics

  2173. answers why

  2174. why should they believe

  2175. why should they believe

  2176. I need to believe

  2177. that Jesus is Lord

2178. why should I believe that

  2179. why is that relevant

  2180. and that's what

  2181. Johnny will take us

  2182. through next week

  2183. why is God relevant

  2184. why is God relevant

  2185. what's so good

  2186. about Jesus

  2187. and there'll be

  2188. other questions

  2189. like that

  2190. throughout the summer

  2191. after that

  2192. James

  2193. he'll talk us

  2194. about

  2195. to us about

  2196. why should I believe

  2197. the Bible

  2198. why should I trust

  2199. God's word

  2200. we also mentioned

  2201. interest groups

  2202. earlier

  2203. various interest groups

  2204. one of them

  2205. I'm leading

  2206. will be

  2207. further discussion

  2208. on apologetics

  2209. if you have any

  2210. questions

  2211. questions about

  2212. the faith

  2213. hey I want to

  2214. share the gospel

  2215. but I

  2216. you know I'm scared

  2217. they'll ask me a question

  2218. and I won't know

  2219. how to answer them

  2220. and maybe I don't even

  2221. know if I believe

  2222. all this myself

  2223. right how can we

  2224. have this confidence

  2225. to be bold

  2226. witnesses of Christ

  2227. let's be equipped

  2228. in our minds also

  2229. to be ready

  2230. to have a reason

  2231. to make a defense

  2232. of what we believe

  2233. to give a defense

2234. of the hope that we have

  2235. with gentleness

  2236. and respect

  2237. so if you're interested

  2238. in that

  2239. the next session

  2240. the first session

  2241. we'll have

  2242. is next Sunday

  2243. after the service

  2244. after lunch

  2245. at 2pm

  2246. over here

  2247. and we'll be

  2248. we'll be asking

  2249. about

  2250. what

  2251. why should I trust

2252. the text of the Bible

  2253. where does the Bible

  2254. come from

  2255. I believe it's God's word

2256. but where do these words

  2257. actually come from

2258. so we'll answer that question

2259. and more throughout the summer

2260. and if you have any other

2261. questions let me know too

  2262. but

  2263. point is

  2264. let's be equipped

  2265. to be bold witnesses

  2266. of Christ

  2267. right

  2268. we trust

  2269. we serve

  2270. a God

  2271. that can't be stopped

2272. so let's live like that church

  2273. thank you

  2274. thank you
