  1. At the heart of Jesus' message is this invitation not just to come to him but to grow in

  2. ! And to keep on growing. And as Jesus is in that boat conveying that message to those that have gathered

  3. ! You can picture him wanting to kind of get that message across.

  4. Come and come and grow and keep on growing and keep on growing. And sort of scanning around

  5. what was going on around him thinking how can I get this message across to the people in front of me?

  6. And then spotting a farmer up on a hillside perhaps with a donkey and apparently this is how they sow

  7. seed but putting a sack on the back of that donkey and then tearing a hole in the bottom of the sack

  8. of seeds. And then walking along with the donkey as the seeds spill out onto the ground.

  9. As the donkey walks forward so the seeds fall out onto the ground from the sack.

  10. And then pointing to the different types of surface, the paths, the soil, the rocks, the different places

  11. where the seed could have sown. And the seed, there's nothing wrong with the seed. The seed's great.

  12. The seed has all the potential to grow and represents God's desire for growth.

  13. But as Jesus then begins to share this parable and present pictures before his listeners,

  14. so he's inviting his listeners to imagine what each image of a seed falling onto a particular

  15. type of surface might represent.

  16. And as we think about that set of images, because it is a set of images, not just one,

  17. because Jesus talks about different types of surfaces that the seeds can land on,

  18. perhaps the easiest thing is for us to suppose that Jesus is talking about different types of people.

  19. You know, you might be that type of person that is like a stony ground, or you might be that type of person

  20. that is represented by the thorns, or you might be that type of person that's represented by the good soil.

  21. That would be perhaps the easiest and obvious way to imagine it.

  22. But I wonder if it's more helpful to think of it a little bit differently.

  23. And to imagine that as Jesus is setting these different images before his listeners,

  24. he is actually saying that any one of these images can apply to any one of us at any time in our lives.

  25. Do you remember Charlie Brown and the Peanuts?

  26. Yeah, the cartoons.

  27. There was one in particular where one of the characters, I think it was Sally,

  28. and she'd been set a memory verse.

  29. It was something from the book of Revelation.

  30. But she can't recall, she's in Sunday school,

  31. and she can't remember what this memory verse was that she was set from the previous week in Sunday school.

  32. And she says, I think it was something from the book of re-evaluation.

  33. But in saying that, she actually put her finger on what Scripture is,

  34. and what the teaching of Jesus is.

  35. That it's not just a one-in-time thing,

  36. but it's an ongoing thing, that we have this relationship with God's living Word.

  37. That every day of our lives we are re-evaluating,

  38. not through a sense of insecurity, but because we know that God wants us to grow,

  39. and to keep on growing.

  40. That coming to Jesus Christ is not just a one-off thing,

  41. an event, that we look back on,

  42. and that's the day I came to Jesus,

  43. that's when I became a Christian, and then it's all finished.

  44. No, it's an ongoing, everyday thing,

  45. where God wants us to grow,

  46. and knows that we can grow in ways that we can't imagine,

  47. when left by ourselves.

  48. But when we see the Word of God,

  49. when we unpack these parables,

  50. we can see that actually all sorts of things are possible.

  51. So with that in mind,

  52. what I'd like us to do is just think about the images

  53. that are loaded into this parable over these next few minutes.

  54. And rather than perhaps thinking that the different types of surfaces

  55. that these seeds land on refer to different types of people,

  56. instead to invite you to think,

  57. how might that type of surface apply to you right now?

  58. Jesus begins by talking about the path,

  59. a solid surface.

  60. Fields were kind of created within strips,

  61. and there were paths between those strips,

  62. that anybody could walk along,

  63. like a public right of way.

  64. And so if you can imagine this donkey,

  65. with the sack of seeds on its back,

  66. with a hole put in the bottom of that sack,

  67. with the seed spilling out,

  68. as it's making its way to the field,

  69. where it's going to be sowing,

  70. inevitably some seeds are going to grow,

  71. are going to fall out of that sack,

  72. and hit the solid path before they even get to the soil.

  73. The seed just bounces off a solid surface.

  74. It doesn't even begin.

  75. Rather than imagining this referring to just a type of person

  76. that never ever responds to the word of God,

  77. although it could be that,

  78. ask the question,

  79. does that ever happen to you?

  80. And what I want to suggest is that

  81. the longer you've been a follower of Jesus,

  82. there is a certain sense in which it can become

  83. a greater area of vulnerability,

  84. that God's trying to say something to us.

  85. But because we've had previous experiences of God,

  86. we kind of think that this new experience of God,

  87. what God might be saying to you right now

  88. in a new season, a new chapter of your life,

  89. well, that couldn't possibly be.

  90. And so it just bounces off.

  91. We all need to ask the question,

  92. what might God be saying right now

  93. that is new, that is different,

  94. that you haven't heard before,

  95. that at face value you could quite quickly dismiss it

  96. and think, well, God couldn't possibly be saying that

  97. to me right now?

  98. Is there a sense in which God's word to you now

  99. could just be bouncing off a hard surface?

  100. Might there be something that God is saying to you right now

  101. about something that he wants to do with you in your life,

  102. about a new, perhaps different way of serving him,

  103. or perhaps something that he's opening up in your workplace,

  104. or opening up in relationships, in your family life,

  105. something that represents something new and different

  106. that you haven't heard before,

  107. that you just might not be open to,

  108. that you might, by your own assumptions and presumptions,

  109. be closing yourself off to?

  110. What new thing might God be trying to say to you now?

  111. Before we move on,

  112. I'd like us to hold that for a moment in prayer.

  113. Pray with me.

  114. Lord, as we think about this story,

  115. this parable of seeds being planted on different surfaces

  116. and the seed bouncing off solid ground,

  117. a path not even beginning to take root.

  118. Lord, help us to be aware

  119. of how we can close our hearts and minds

  120. to what you might be trying to say to us.

  121. Lord, may your invitation to grow

  122. never just bounce off us,

  123. but help us to be open every day

  124. to what new things you may be saying to us

  125. and inviting us into.

  126. In Jesus' name.

  127. Amen.

  128. Jesus said,

  129. then there's the type of,

  130. sorry, the seed that can land onto a type of surface

  131. that has rocks.

  132. It has soil, but it also has rocks.

  133. Now, because it has soil,

  134. it can begin to grow.

  135. But because of the rocks,

  136. that growth is fairly limited

  137. and it doesn't really properly,

  138. thoroughly take root.

  139. I suppose a question that we each need to ask ourselves

  140. is in what sense

  141. might there be that kind of thing going on

  142. in our own walk with Jesus?

  143. In what sense might there be

  144. a sort of like an initial spark

  145. of enthusiasm in our discipleship,

  146. but it hasn't really taken root?

  147. In what sense might we begin to get excited

  148. about the claims of Jesus

  149. and the truth of the gospel

  150. and we get excited about it for a while,

  151. but then it kind of withers out a little bit,

  152. like that seed that begins to grow

  153. but doesn't really go anywhere?

  154. In what sense might you ever be saying to yourself,

  155. well, you know, I'm a starter, not a finisher?

  156. In what sense might we ever be guided

  157. by the emotions of the moment?

  158. You may have heard of a theologian,

  159. Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  160. a German pastor,

  161. one of the great theological voices

  162. of the 20th century,

  163. who was,

  164. he was imprisoned

  165. because of his opposition

  166. to the Nazi regime,

  167. eventually paid the ultimate price

  168. having been held in a concentration camp

  169. and was killed by the Nazis

  170. just a short while

  171. before the liberation

  172. of that concentration camp.

  173. Bonhoeffer is famous

  174. for writing about discipleship,

  175. particularly that phrase

  176. that grace is,

  177. God's grace is free,

  178. but it's never cheap.

  179. One of the quotations

  180. from Bonhoeffer

  181. that's not quite so well known

  182. was written by him

  183. to his niece

  184. shortly before she got married.

  185. He wrote a letter to her

  186. and her fiancé

  187. for her to read

  188. on their wedding day.

  189. He said this,

  190. Today you are young

  191. and you are very much in love

  192. and you think that your love

  193. can sustain your marriage.

  194. It can't.

  195. Let your marriage

  196. sustain your love.

  197. Let me read that again.

  198. Today you are young

  199. and very much in love

  200. and you think your love

  201. can sustain your marriage.

  202. It can't.

  203. Let your marriage

  204. sustain your love.

  205. If we think that

  206. our human feeling

  207. is enough to carry us through,

  208. we're on

  209. dangerous ground.

  210. I think what Bonhoeffer

  211. was trying to say

  212. is that

  213. in marriage

  214. that

  215. there is this thing

  216. that is bigger

  217. than our emotions

  218. and our feelings

  219. and our experiences

  220. that are carried

  221. by our humanity.

  222. There is this thing

  223. called the covenant

  224. of God

  225. that says to two people,

  226. you are struggling

  227. right now

  228. in your lives together,

  229. but this covenant,

  230. this agreement,

  231. which is instituted

  232. by God

  233. is bigger than that

  234. and that is what

  235. holds you

  236. and sustains you.

  237. And so in scripture

  238. we find this idea

  239. of marriage

  240. as a covenant

  241. held before

  242. as a model

  243. of God's covenant

  244. with his people.

  245. And in the same way

  246. there will be times

  247. when our feelings,

  248. our love,

  249. our emotions for God

  250. will be really high.

  251. There will also be times

  252. when those emotions

  253. are just flat.

  254. In fact,

  255. there will be times

  256. when we'll be screaming

  257. at God

  258. because we cannot

  259. understand what's going on.

  260. And it is in those times

  261. when we need to remember

  262. that the covenant

  263. of God

  264. which says

  265. I have called you

  266. by name

  267. and you are mine

  268. is far greater

  269. than the emotional state

  270. that you or I

  271. will ever be able

  272. to have with God

  273. this side of eternity.

  274. And that covenant,

  275. that promise of God

  276. is what holds us.

  277. So,

  278. when we think

  279. of that picture

  280. of seeds

  281. beginning to grow

  282. in the soil

  283. but not actually

  284. being able

  285. to establish themselves

  286. and eventually

  287. they wither and die,

  288. we have there

  289. an image

  290. of how

  291. as human beings

  292. we can be so fickle.

  293. We can be so shallow

  294. when we attach

  295. ourselves

  296. onto our feelings,

  297. onto our emotional states.

  298. As we hear these words

  299. let's be challenged

  300. into thinking

  301. in what sense

  302. are we guided

  303. by our feelings

  304. and by our emotions alone

  305. and be reminded

  306. that what holds us

  307. in God

  308. is something

  309. so much bigger

  310. and more powerful

  311. than our own

  312. emotional perceptions.

  313. That way

  314. we won't just be starters

  315. we'll be finishers.

  316. let's just hold

  317. that image

  318. for a moment

  319. and pray about it.

  320. Let's pray together.

  321. Lord,

  322. as we think about

  323. how

  324. seeds

  325. hitting

  326. shallow soil

  327. starting to grow

  328. but

  329. not properly

  330. growing

  331. and eventually

  332. just withering away

  333. so we are reminded

  334. of how

  335. as human beings

  336. we can be shallow

  337. at times

  338. when we allow

  339. our perceptions

  340. of truth

  341. to be guided

  342. by our emotions

  343. alone.

  344. Lord,

  345. give us the strength

  346. to go deeper.

  347. Give us the strength

  348. to know

  349. that you call

  350. each and every one

  351. of us by name

  352. that we belong

  353. to you

  354. and that promise

  355. that covenant

  356. is far bigger

  357. and greater

  358. and stronger

  359. than our own

  360. emotions.

  361. In Jesus' name.

  362. Amen.

  363. The third

  364. of these four images

  365. that we have

  366. is the image

  367. of the

  368. thorns.

  369. Jesus says

  370. that as the farmer

  371. was sowing the seeds

  372. so were the seeds

  373. fell among thorns.

  374. They began to grow

  375. because they would

  376. make their way

  377. through the thorns.

  378. They would begin to

  379. you know

  380. they would

  381. grow in the soil

  382. but eventually

  383. the thorns

  384. grew up

  385. and overtook

  386. the growth

  387. of the good seeds

  388. and so

  389. they choked

  390. and they withered

  391. and died.

  392. So the worries

  393. of life

  394. and the deceitfulness

  395. of wealth

  396. says Jesus

  397. choked

  398. that growth.

  399. You know

  400. these things

  401. the worries

  402. of life

  403. the deceitfulness

  404. of wealth

  405. and it's interesting

  406. how Jesus

  407. pairs those things

  408. together

  409. the worries

  410. of life

  411. and the deceitfulness

  412. of wealth

  413. will always

  414. be there.

  415. They won't go away

  416. they're here to stay

  417. they're part of

  418. life

  419. this side of eternity

  420. at least

  421. but

  422. they won't go away

  423. but the question

  424. is how we relate

  425. to them.

  426. And we have

  427. a choice

  428. as to whether

  429. we allow

  430. those things

  431. that

  432. threaten us

  433. those

  434. anxieties

  435. whether we

  436. allow them

  437. to dominate

  438. our thinking

  439. or not.

  440. we share

  441. with you

  442. an illustration

  443. that comes

  444. from

  445. the world

  446. of

  447. cognitive

  448. behavioural

  449. therapy.

  450. We need to

  451. imagine

  452. that

  453. you're

  454. watching

  455. a horror

  456. film

  457. it's a

  458. really

  459. now

  460. if you're

  461. one of those

  462. people

  463. that actually

  464. doesn't find

  465. horror films

  466. scary

  467. or actually

  468. you enjoy

  469. them

  470. this perhaps

  471. might not

  472. apply to you

  473. but I think

  474. most people

  475. actually

  476. by definition

  477. of a horror

  478. film

  479. don't actually

  480. find horror

  481. films

  482. particularly

  483. enjoyable

  484. in the sense

  485. that they're

  486. meant to be

  487. scary.

  488. So imagine

  489. that you're

  490. sat

  491. watching a

  492. horror film.

  493. The horror

  494. film represents

  495. anxiety.

  496. Now you

  497. could be

  498. sitting there

  499. watching that

  500. horror film

  501. in the dark

  502. on your own

  503. late at night

  504. and as you

  505. watch that

  506. horror film

  507. you're consumed

  508. by it.

  509. All you can

  510. see is the

  511. stuff going

  512. on in that

  513. film.

  514. It's terrifying

  515. and it

  516. becomes your

  517. entire world.

  518. When you're

  519. alone with

  520. your anxieties

  521. it's a bit

  522. like being

  523. on your own

  524. just in front

  525. of that

  526. horrific set

  527. of scenes

  528. on a screen

  529. and you're

  530. on your own

  531. and otherwise

  532. it's darkness.

  533. Now imagine

  534. that that

  535. same film

  536. which represents

  537. your anxieties

  538. is being

  539. played

  540. but in a

  541. different

  542. situation.

  543. imagine

  544. that rather

  545. than watching

  546. that film

  547. on your own

  548. in the dark

  549. at night

  550. the film

  551. is actually

  552. on a screen

  553. somewhere

  554. but it's

  555. in broad

  556. daylight

  557. it's a sunny

  558. day

  559. and it's

  560. on the

  561. screen

  562. in the

  563. corner of

  564. the room

  565. the sound's

  566. being turned

  567. right down

  568. and you're

  569. not on your

  570. own

  571. imagine

  572. that you're

  573. surrounded

  574. by friends

  575. people that

  576. you love

  577. and imagine

  578. that there's

  579. a bit of a

  580. party going

  581. on and

  582. whatever it

  583. is that makes

  584. you feel

  585. happy

  586. imagine

  587. that's

  588. what's

  589. happening

  590. and imagine

  591. that there's

  592. actually a

  593. really lovely

  594. atmosphere

  595. in the room

  596. of friendship

  597. and love

  598. and joy

  599. and people

  600. being together

  601. all the while

  602. this horror film

  603. is playing

  604. in the corner

  605. of the room

  606. but the

  607. sounds turn

  608. down

  609. the place

  610. is light

  611. you're not

  612. on your

  613. own

  614. that film

  615. is still

  616. rolling

  617. but you

  618. hardly

  619. notice it

  620. every now

  621. and then

  622. you might

  623. catch a

  624. glimpse of it

  625. in the corner

  626. of your eye

  627. oh yeah

  628. the film's

  629. there

  630. but that's

  631. not the

  632. focus of

  633. attention

  634. you're

  635. actually

  636. surrounded

  637. by good

  638. things

  639. by good

  640. people

  641. you're in

  642. good company

  643. there's light

  644. in the room

  645. and there's

  646. a good

  647. positive

  648. atmosphere

  649. you see

  650. the point

  651. is

  652. is that

  653. whatever's

  654. going on

  655. in your

  656. life

  657. the causes

  658. of anxiety

  659. will always

  660. be there

  661. it's part

  662. of being

  663. human

  664. it's part

  665. of the

  666. real world

  667. the question

  668. is

  669. is how

  670. do we

  671. live out

  672. in that

  673. environment

  674. we can

  675. either allow

  676. those things

  677. to be the

  678. focus

  679. or we can

  680. accept that

  681. they are there

  682. but not allow

  683. them to dominate

  684. our thoughts

  685. and how do we

  686. do that

  687. well not by

  688. pretending that

  689. they don't

  690. exist

  691. but rather by

  692. immersing

  693. ourselves in

  694. other things

  695. by immersing

  696. ourselves in

  697. the word

  698. of God

  699. in worshipping

  700. God

  701. in praying

  702. God

  703. in grounding

  704. ourselves in

  705. the presence

  706. of God

  707. in our daily

  708. lives

  709. by being part

  710. of a church

  711. by being part

  712. of a home

  713. group

  714. by getting

  715. to know

  716. Christian

  717. friends around

  718. us and

  719. accepting support

  720. and prayer

  721. from others

  722. by not being

  723. afraid to ask

  724. for prayer

  725. to be prayed

  726. for

  727. by praying

  728. by worshipping

  729. by immersing

  730. ourselves in

  731. all the good

  732. things that

  733. God wants us

  734. to have

  735. and to grow

  736. in

  737. so to

  738. leave that

  739. set of

  740. illustrations

  741. and come

  742. back to

  743. the

  744. illustration

  745. that Jesus

  746. gave

  747. you know

  748. the thorns

  749. may be

  750. growing

  751. the thorns

  752. that represent

  753. you know

  754. our anxiety

  755. may still

  756. be there

  757. but they

  758. don't need

  759. to choke

  760. us

  761. if the

  762. light of

  763. Christ

  764. is dominant

  765. again

  766. let's pray

  767. together

  768. Lord

  769. we thank

  770. you

  771. that even

  772. though

  773. the worries

  774. of life

  775. and the

  776. deceitfulness

  777. of wealth

  778. is part

  779. of the

  780. world

  781. as it

  782. is right

  783. now

  784. in all

  785. its

  786. brokenness

  787. that that

  788. is not

  789. the full

  790. picture

  791. and we

  792. thank you

  793. that because

  794. of Jesus

  795. our life

  796. does not

  797. need to be

  798. dominated

  799. by these

  800. things

  801. that our

  802. focus

  803. can be

  804. different

  805. so help

  806. us

  807. every day

  808. of our

  809. lives

  810. not to be

  811. focusing in

  812. on those

  813. things that

  814. could choke

  815. us

  816. those things

  817. that can

  818. pull us

  819. down

  820. but help

  821. us instead

  822. to be

  823. flooded by

  824. your light

  825. and to know

  826. your presence

  827. and your hope

  828. and to be

  829. grounded in

  830. you

  831. in Jesus

  832. name

  833. Amen

  834. The last

  835. image

  836. is one

  837. of growth

  838. it's good

  839. soil

  840. Jesus says

  841. quite simply

  842. that the

  843. seed

  844. when it

  845. lands in

  846. good soil

  847. grows

  848. because God

  849. wants it

  850. to

  851. know this

  852. God wants

  853. you to

  854. know him

  855. but not

  856. just as a

  857. one-off

  858. thing

  859. not just

  860. as an

  861. initial

  862. decision

  863. but every

  864. day

  865. to grow

  866. and to

  867. keep on

  868. growing

  869. and to

  870. keep on

  871. growing

  872. and to

  873. keep on

  874. growing

  875. and that's

  876. the

  877. magnificent

  878. thing

  879. about being

  880. a Christian

  881. is it

  882. doesn't

  883. stop

  884. we've

  885. got the

  886. whole

  887. of

  888. eternity

  889. that it

  890. will go

  891. on to

  892. but this

  893. side

  894. of

  895. eternity

  896. this

  897. side

  898. of

  899. eternity

  900. there is

  901. more

  902. growing

  903. to be

  904. done

  905. there are

  906. those

  907. things

  908. that can

  909. challenge

  910. that

  911. there are

  912. things

  913. that can

  914. try to

  915. get in

  916. the way

  917. God wants

  918. us

  919. to grow

  920. there was

  921. a group

  922. of tourists

  923. visiting a

  924. village

  925. one day

  926. and

  927. it was a

  928. small but

  929. very quaint

  930. village

  931. and one

  932. of the

  933. tourists

  934. said

  935. quite

  936. patronisingly

  937. to one

  938. of the

  939. locals

  940. were any

  941. great men

  942. or women

  943. born in

  944. this village

  945. he said

  946. no

  947. only

  948. babies

  949. think

  950. about

  951. it

  952. there

  953. are no

  954. instant

  955. heroes

  956. in the

  957. kingdom

  958. of

  959. God

  960. growth

  961. takes

  962. time

  963. growth

  964. takes

  965. a

  966. lifetime

  967. when

  968. however

  969. old

  970. or young

  971. we may

  972. be

  973. however

  974. long

  975. we may

  976. have

  977. been

  978. followers

  979. of

  980. Jesus

  981. there's

  982. still

  983. more

  984. growing

  985. to

  986. happen

  987. growth

  988. takes

  989. time

  990. we're

  991. never

  992. too

  993. old

  994. to

  995. grow

  996. up

  997. let's

  998. pray

  999. Lord

  1000. thank you

  1001. that your

  1002. desire

  1003. is for

  1004. us to

  1005. grow

  1006. and to

  1007. keep

  1008. on

  1009. growing

  1010. may

  1011. that

  1012. happen

  1013. Lord

  1014. we pray

  1015. that as

  1016. we come

  1017. to share

  1018. communion

  1019. in a

  1020. few

  1021. moments

  1022. as we

  1023. come to

  1024. share in

  1025. the bread

  1026. and wine

  1027. may we

  1028. be reminded

  1029. again

  1030. that you

  1031. come to

  1032. us in

  1033. Jesus

  1034. because you

  1035. love us

  1036. you want us

  1037. to know

  1038. you and you

  1039. want us to

  1040. grow in

  1041. that

  1042. and as we

  1043. face whatever

  1044. lies ahead

  1045. this week

  1046. and in the

  1047. time to

  1048. come

  1049. may we

  1050. keep on

  1051. growing

  1052. and knowing

  1053. you in

  1054. our lives

  1055. more and

  1056. more and

  1057. more in

  1058. Jesus name

  1059. Amen
