  1. Morning, everyone. Good to see us all. We're continuing and going back to the book of Acts.

  2. Just to recap, if you've been in and out over the summer, we've been doing this series on apologetics,

  3. which is just to answer some of the hard questions that we have, whether it's about science or suffering

  4. or the purpose and meaning of life, all these kind of things. And so we're going to put a pause there.

  5. Let me just tell you, just to reiterate again, the purpose of that series was not so that you

  6. could be better at arguing with other people about the faith. That is not what it is, because you can

  7. be the best at arguing and actually win them over intellectually or to the point where you just beat

  8. them into submission with your words and you're like, okay, I've won. You still can't win their hearts.

  9. You still can't win their souls. In fact, it's not you who does win any of their hearts and souls.

  10. It's God. The whole point, I think, at least my heart for that series was just to encourage you

  11. that when you're faced with some of these doubts about purpose and meaning, when you're faced with

  12. some of these questions in your head about, well, what about science or what about suffering,

  13. that you would be like, oh, actually, there was an answer to that. I don't remember it because I

  14. wasn't fully paying attention, but there was an answer to that that I can now go back to Spotify

  15. and find the answers to or go to Google or AI. Our faith is question-proof. We may not know all

  16. the answers, but God is bigger than our questions. Just because we can't answer them doesn't mean that

  17. God doesn't exist, was really the point of that series. We're going to go back to the book of Acts now

  18. because whilst we have all those questions, actually, and we're equipped and we have all the intellectual

  19. knowledge we need, if we just sit on the couch and we don't go out and we don't actually go and scatter,

  20. it all is still meaningless. So we're going to go back in the book of Acts where we see these people

  21. basically catch fire and then start spreading to the point where now that we're here in Hong Kong

  22. hearing about the same message that those people took from those days. And so just to give you a recap of the

  23. book of Acts, it's just, we only got up to chapter five. Okay, so the first chapter is the first flying man.

  24. You see Jesus ascending and saying, I'll be back. And then he says, but I will pour out my spirit onto you

  25. and you need to take that. You can't just stay in one place. You have to go. You have to go to the ends of the earth.

  26. But for now, go to Jerusalem. For now, go to that Jerusalem, to the place that you know, and wait for me there.

  27. Can you imagine just a man flying into the sky and says, I'll be back. Go to Jerusalem. Wait for me there.

  28. You would be just as shocked as they were. And so they got back to Jerusalem, didn't know what to do.

  29. Couldn't go back home because of what they just saw. So they're like, well, let's just go pray.

  30. So they found an upper room and they went to pray and they prayed for 10 days straight, 10 day prayer meeting.

  31. And then the Holy Spirit descends on them. And that is Acts chapter two.

  32. Pentecost comes. They start speaking in tongues. Peter, the impulsive coward, violent Peter,

  33. stands up filled with the spirit and gives the sermon of his life.

  34. The kerygma, the gospel, talking about Jesus. Jesus's life, Jesus's death, and Jesus's resurrection.

  35. And what happens? The people are filled with the spirit. They are cut to the heart. Acts chapter two, verse 37.

  36. They are cut to the heart and they go, well, what must we do? What must we do to be saved?

  37. And so he says, well, be baptized, repent, and you'll receive the forgiveness of sins.

  38. And from that moment on, you will be a new community. And then Acts two, 42 to 47 is the new community

  39. where there's a field of reverence and awe. They're devoting themselves to just fellowship,

  40. breaking bread, communion, prayer. And then they see just, they just, they have glad and generous hearts.

  41. The Lord adds to the number. The church grows from 120 to 3,000. Just think of a logistical nightmare

  42. that would be. But here it is. It grows. Chapter three, they go out and they see people who are in

  43. need. The lame beggar is healed. They heal him, but they get in trouble for healing him. So Acts chapter

  44. four, they're dragged into court. They're dragged in front of the Sanhedrin. Why did you heal this guy?

  45. Who are you? I said, who are we listening to? We're not scared of you. We just followed a guy who told us

  46. he would die and come back again. And he did exactly just that. We're going to follow him.

  47. Now we're going to respect you and you can do whatever you want to us, but you can't touch us

  48. really because of that guy. And then the community continues to grow. And then it grows and they get

  49. more and more generous. There's no one in need, remember? And then of course, there's the first death.

  50. A couple who had spiritual pride, who wanted to be seen as people who were holy, who were good. And

  51. so they saw other people giving generously. So they decided, hey, I want to give generously,

  52. but I want to appear to be more generous than I actually was. So here I am. Because actually,

  53. in some ways, I don't blame them. They didn't have to do any of that stuff. So they did it. They just

  54. held a little bit back. And my question I remember was, hey, it's not about what you're giving already.

  55. It's actually about what you're still holding back. That's the key. God doesn't care about how much

  56. you're actually giving. He's looking at your heart and going, well, is there something that you're

  57. still holding back from me? And sadly, they meet a very drastic end because at that point,

  58. the integrity of the church, the purity of the church was so important. Can you imagine starting

  59. a church at that moment on a lie? We wouldn't be here, if we're honest. So they take the hit.

  60. And that's when we move to Acts chapter 6. We don't know the time difference between Acts chapter 5 and 6,

Acts 6 chapter mention Acts 5 chapter mention

  61. but it's probably a while. And what we see then is actually the church growing even more.

  62. And that's when some of the problems are coming. So we're going to go through that. We're only going

  63. to be doing seven verses. It's not just going to be me talking. I'm going to invite a friend up to

  64. talk as well. But I truly believe in these seven verses, we'll find out a little bit about church,

  65. a little bit about us, a little bit about God, and actually a little bit about our church,

  66. not just the gathering here. If you look at the full name of the gathering,

  67. it is the English Gathering of Kongfuk Church, which is part of EFCC, Evangelical Free Church of China.

  68. That's why we're called just the gathering, because our full name is very long.

  69. But we're part of a wider church. So I want to take this chance actually to talk to you a little

  70. bit about that today as well. But before all of that, can we have the word of God to be ministering

  71. to us? I'm going to invite Andy to come up and speak and share from the word of God.

  72. But I'm only joking, just reading. Can I invite you to stand for the word?

  73. It's okay, they're all friends.

  74. Now in these days, when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists

  75. arose against the Hebrews because their windows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  76. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,

  77. It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  78. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit

  79. and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and

  80. to the ministry of the word. And what they said pleased the whole gathering. And they chose Stephen,

  81. a man full of faith, and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor,

  82. and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas, a proselyte of Antioch. And they sat before the apostles,

  83. and they prayed and laid their hands on them. And the word of God continued to increase,

  84. and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem. And a great many of the priests

  85. become obedient to the faith.

  86. Thank you.

  87. This is the word of God. Can we give him a round of applause? Take a seat, please. Take a seat.

  88. Oh, that's so good. Some of those names. Some of those. Sounds like you're reading a different

  89. kind of Italian spaghettis and pastors. So I'm only going to do seven verses. I'm just going to go

  90. through verse by verse. You see chapter six, verse one here. Again, if you have your Bible,

  91. please just keep it open so you can see where I am in the sermon. That's helpful. And as I've told

  92. you many times before, I don't believe in the app. I only believe in the physical word of God. So,

  93. and if you want one, it's at the back over there. And if you don't have one at home, then

  94. if you take it, no one will notice. This is okay. Now, in these days, when the disciples were

  95. increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows

  96. were being neglected in the daily distribution. Isn't that just the purpose of the church,

  97. that the church would grow? We've all known churches, actually, we hear about churches that

  98. are dwindling and kind of dying and aging. But the whole purpose of the church is that it grows.

  99. It's not always the case. And God does allow certain churches to die. I take great comfort

  100. and great trepidation in thinking that actually all the churches in the book of Revelation,

  101. they're not around anymore. They're just a pile of rocks. And Jesus says, if you're not doing

  102. what you're going to do, which is to the church of Ephesus, he says, you're not loving anymore. I'm

  103. going to cancel you out. I'm going to close you down. So Jesus isn't afraid to close churches down.

  104. But this one is growing because the purpose of the church is to not just gather, but to scatter,

  105. to actually bring people in, to invite friends in, to actually share the gospel with them. If you're

  106. just here week in, week out, just doing your thing, then you've missed the point of church.

  107. That's the whole point of what it's trying to say here. But then there's a problem.

  108. There's a complaint. There's the Hellenists. The Hellenists are basically the Greek speaking Jews.

  109. They probably came to Jerusalem during Pentecost to worship and filled with the Holy Spirit and

  110. became Christians. But so these were the Jewish diaspora almost who speak Greek. I don't know.

  111. I mean, they are equivalent, you know, Asian Americans or Australian born Chinese or British

  112. born Chinese. And they're all called back to the homeland. And so it's that kind of group of people.

  113. And so it's those people who were there. And of course, they are the minority.

  114. And so you see that. And they arose against the Hebrews who were the ones who were Hebrew

  115. speaking Jews, those who were from Jerusalem, the OGs of the group of the people. And so

  116. there was a complaint against these, between these two groups of people because their widows

  117. were being neglected in the daily distribution. So there were a group of people, the needy,

  118. the widows who weren't getting the food that they needed. And then I stopped there. I go,

  119. wait a minute. It was only in chapter four where there was no one in need.

  120. Where everything was good. We're all sharing. I'm going to buy, sell my house and I'm going to give

  121. you all my money. And John C is going to give me his Tesla. And it's going to be a great,

  122. wonderful time that we get to share all these different things together. And yet two chapters

  123. later, there's a group that don't get food. I'm careful not to kind of romanticize the churches

  124. in the Bible because they're still filled with people. And where there are people, there is

  125. selfishness. And so it doesn't take long. And so I'd encourage you, if you're sat here going,

  126. oh, this, my church isn't this church. Well, this church wasn't that great either because it was

  127. filled with people. And the church isn't really just about how great the people are. It's about how

  128. great God is. And so you see this group of widows, Greek speaking ones. And now the problem here is

  129. there was an economic disparity. There were the rich and the poor, which is a normal thing. It was

  130. around when Jesus was around. The church of Philippi had a businesswoman and then had a slave girl.

  131. Paul talks to the church in Corinth and saying, you guys are having communion, but you guys are

  132. having caviar and you guys are having Samsung or no food at all. There's a difference. This isn't how

  133. it's supposed to be. We're supposed to love one another together. And yet you see here,

  134. there is a problem. And of course, that is just simply just difference.

  135. We're just surrounded by people who are different to us. The root of it, of course, is simply

  136. selfishness. Just on a side note there, the church is supposed to look after those who are in need.

  137. Even in the Old Testament, the prophets would say, would actually gauge a group of people's

  138. relationship to God by how much they are caring for the poor. Okay? That's how they would gauge.

  139. And so the church has to have a role to play where we're actually serving those who are in need.

  140. Now, here's the first critical point that comes out for me as I sit around looking at all of us here,

  141. English speaking Chinese in Anmuti in Hong Kong. Are there people in need here? Yes, there are.

  142. Are we helping them as much as we can?

  143. I wish we were.

  144. But that's where I also want to talk about the wider church. That there are things that are going on that we should hear about.

  145. There are things that you and I could be doing. More things that we could be doing.

  146. The ministry

  147. of the Word fuels the ministry of tables.

  148. When we minister to people through the Word,

  149. it also has to bless their lives as well.

  150. Francis Chan says this,

  151. If we only preach the gospel without caring for the poor,

  152. we fail.

  153. If we only care for the poor without preaching the gospel,

  154. we fail.

  155. Jesus did both.

  156. And so

  157. must we.

  158. But maybe just to kind of jump

  159. to their defense, this church, and give them the benefit of the doubt,

  160. there was another problem, just language.

  161. You know, these guys speak Greek.

  162. And these guys speak Hebrew.

  163. And so

  164. somewhere along the line, it might not have been

  165. overt racism and discrimination.

  166. It was simply just, well,

  167. hey, I'm making an announcement.

  168. I'm shouting out loud.

  169. Hey, there's going to be food over here in Hebrew.

  170. And the ones who are speaking Greek just don't hear it.

  171. They don't understand it.

  172. So they don't know what's happening.

  173. We're part of a wider church.

  174. And I sit in some meetings with my

  175. Cantonese and Mandarin counterparts.

  176. And sometimes in those meetings, they're in Chinese.

  177. And I'll be honest, sometimes it just flies over my head.

  178. I don't know what they're saying.

  179. My Chinese is limited to 打拳天 Chinese.

  180. Like, you know,

  181. 雨打火, 宿地名, 宿辰, those are fine.

  182. But you start talking in Christianese, Chinese lingo,

  183. or just watching the news, it's over my head.

  184. So I can imagine maybe there's certain situations here

  185. where there is food being distributed and announced,

  186. and the Greek-speaking ones just don't hear,

  187. or they just don't understand it.

  188. So that might actually be a problem.

  189. Or there might just even be a cultural problem as well,

  190. because they're just different.

  191. I keep saying this.

  192. The irony of me here being a Chinese guy

  193. standing in Hong Kong,

  194. speaking to a group of people in English,

  195. we're just, we're in a really interesting space.

  196. And there's language and cultural divides

  197. and generational divides.

  198. There are so many different divides.

  199. There are so many reasons

  200. why we shouldn't be part of the same church together.

  201. And yet here it is.

  202. My problem is,

  203. I'm going to try and defend all of those things,

  204. but honestly, there are sometimes also no excuses,

  205. because we, even in this very niche community,

  206. we still like to hang out with people just like ourselves.

  207. Correct?

  208. If we say that actually you're the,

  209. you're basically an average of the five people

  210. you spend the most time with.

  211. Have a think now,

  212. who the five people are.

  213. In this church,

  214. the people that, okay,

  215. we're not supposed to have favorites,

  216. but let's say if I just asked you,

  217. who are your favorite people in church?

  218. Just three.

  219. Like, just don't even,

  220. don't even,

  221. you don't need to share it.

  222. The first few minds are popping up right now in your head.

  223. And then I asked you the second question,

  224. which is,

  225. how similar are they to you?

  226. The answer is,

  227. probably quite similar.

  228. If we're being very honest.

  229. Why?

  230. Because we naturally go towards the people who understand us.

  231. We naturally go towards the people who empathize with us,

  232. who we can talk and have conversation with.

  233. So even in a group like this,

  234. where we are already niche,

  235. there are still people that we like to hang out with more.

  236. So I don't think it's not as big a surprise that we're here right now.

  237. The problem here is this.

  238. Why aren't you hanging out with any people who are different to you?

  239. You really should.

  240. I learned so much from hanging out with people who are different to me,

  241. who are much older than I,

  242. who I don't agree with,

  243. with everything.

  244. And yet,

  245. there's something that I can learn from them.

  246. So if you're just averaging,

  247. if you look at the average five people that you hang out with,

  248. and they are all quite similar to you,

  249. my encouragement to you is find someone else.

  250. Find someone's different.

  251. Find someone who doesn't speak the same language as you do.

  252. And you learn something.

  253. I was really inspired by a conversation I had last Sunday with Ebenezer.

  254. Because I was like,

  255. he's like,

  256. the Western world and the,

  257. just in the Eastern world,

  258. the way they,

  259. the way they think,

  260. not even just communicate,

  261. the way they think,

  262. the values that they have,

  263. that sometimes those values they're not even aware of,

  264. is just so different.

  265. I wish people would see that.

  266. We need to spend time with those who are not the same as us.

  267. I also think we are a special group.

  268. I think we're a special group because,

  269. no one,

  270. like with us Chinese,

  271. especially,

  272. those who are third culture kids,

  273. who can be a bit of both,

  274. we have a fantastic opportunity.

  275. And I think the Hellenistic Jews would have had the same.

  276. So they were Jews,

  277. but they've gone to a foreign land.

  278. They can speak Greek.

  279. They can probably speak a little bit of Hebrew.

  280. That's the perfect group of people to be the bridge.

  281. That's the perfect group of people who can understand both sides.

  282. I think we,

  283. I think there are people sat here in this room,

  284. who have the ability,

  285. and the capacity,

  286. and the calling to actually stand in the middle.

  287. Maybe not even just between two groups of people.

  288. Maybe even between three.

  289. Because you can speak all three different languages.

  290. The Lord calls us to be people who stand in the gap.

  291. And so maybe as you evaluate who your five people are,

  292. maybe just see,

  293. okay,

  294. what kind of person are you?

  295. What ingredients are you made of?

  296. And maybe there's something that the Lord needs you to do to be in the gap there.

  297. I think there is a good opportunity.

  298. So that's the problem.

  299. Verse two,

  300. and the 12 summoned the full number of the disciples and said,

  301. it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  302. I love this.

  303. I always say,

  304. when in doubt,

  305. gather,

  306. just get together.

  307. Or when in conflict,

  308. communicate.

  309. Okay,

  310. just let's talk this through.

  311. Not passive aggressively.

  312. Let's talk this through clearly.

  313. And so they get everyone involved.

  314. They get those who are in charge of distributing the food.

  315. They get all the disciples involved and say,

  316. hey,

  317. okay,

  318. there's a problem.

  319. These ladies aren't getting any food.

  320. We need to figure out how to do it.

  321. But here's the problem.

  322. We're too busy standing up here,

  323. just preaching the word of God.

  324. We need help,

  325. is what they're saying.

  326. This is what they're not saying.

  327. That the person preaching is more important than the person serving tables.

  328. That is not what they are saying.

  329. They are saying,

  330. this is what we're supposed to do.

  331. We need someone to help us do this.

  332. That is just as important.

  333. You are just as important as the person stood here preaching.

  334. You need to know that because often we confuse that and we think the church and everything should go through one person.

  335. That's not the case.

  336. He's saying,

  337. preaching of the word of God is the most important,

  338. but the person doing it isn't more important than the person serving tables.

  339. Are you able to grasp that difference with me?

  340. It's very important.

  341. Because if you think I'm more important than you,

  342. you won't be doing what God's asking you to do.

  343. The mission statement,

  344. second one is,

  345. what are your gifts?

  346. What are you called to do?

  347. You must be doing something.

  348. You're not here just to sit.

  349. But,

  350. preaching the word of God is very important

  351. because one of the other problems that we have in churches,

  352. often we run programs,

  353. we do lots of things,

  354. we get very busy and we miss the gospel altogether.

  355. And people can walk through our churches

  356. and go through our programs and our weeks

  357. and do all the fun things that we do,

  358. which are all great things,

  359. but they don't encounter the gospel.

  360. They're not grasped by the gospel.

  361. So,

  362. preaching the word is the most important.

  363. And the other thing is,

  364. the church is obligated to care for people,

  365. to scatter,

  366. to spread the good news,

  367. and to also care for the needs of people.

  368. Because otherwise,

  369. they could have said,

  370. wait,

  371. we're hearing complaints

  372. that some ladies aren't getting food.

  373. Well,

  374. actually,

  375. the church,

  376. we're not supposed to just,

  377. we're not a restaurant,

  378. so they can go find their own food.

  379. That's not,

  380. they didn't say that.

  381. They said,

  382. there's people in need.

  383. We need to look after them.

  384. So,

  385. my question for us is,

  386. do we go out of our way

  387. to spend time with people who we don't know,

  388. who aren't the same as us,

  389. and do we go out of our way

  390. to help those who are in need?

  391. And sometimes,

  392. that looks deeply uncomfortable.

  393. That looks like hanging out with people

  394. who are in deep need,

  395. and you,

  396. you could have gone to watch a movie,

  397. but you didn't.

  398. You decided to stay and hang out with them

  399. until late in the evening.

  400. Just to be a friend.

  401. Just to keep them company.

  402. That's what being the church is.

  403. Now,

  404. this goes into the topic of the church here.

  405. We've been here.

  406. Agnes,

  407. how long have we been in this place for?

  408. Two years?

  409. We've been in this place for two years,

  410. and of course,

  411. we keep knocking out down different walls

  412. just to make a little bit more space

  413. and installing fans

  414. so you don't all faint during the summer.

  415. But I look at this,

  416. and I have to say,

  417. I have a little bit of comfort.

  418. Why?

  419. Because I know that our church is growing,

  420. and I know that we have lots of problems.

  421. I know there are people here who come in

  422. who don't even get spoken to at all.

  423. You don't even get anyone smiling at you,

  424. and then you walk out.

  425. And that breaks my heart,

  426. because I'm like,

  427. that's not what it's supposed to be.

  428. But I also get there's just a lot of people here.

  429. I do get that.

  430. And we're trying to find ways to,

  431. well,

  432. clearly,

  433. we're not above breaking walls,

  434. and we're not here to,

  435. we're looking,

  436. and I'm going to invite someone else

  437. and blame it all on him in a minute

  438. and have him explain to us

  439. why we're still here.

  440. But it's a problem for me

  441. because I know there are people here

  442. who you've been coming

  443. and you want to be in a life group,

  444. and you're like,

  445. I just don't know how,

  446. seems a little bit cliquey,

  447. I don't even know how to get into it.

  448. And I'm like,

  449. that's not the heart.

  450. I can assure you,

  451. that's not the heart.

  452. We are not just a church

  453. for young working professionals

  454. who are cool.

  455. Otherwise,

  456. Nathan wouldn't be here.

  457. We welcome all.

  458. But I don't know how to do it sometimes,

  459. because there's just too many people.

  460. You know,

  461. you walk in,

  462. and I see you,

  463. you're a new face.

  464. And I think I was telling Shigala

  465. the other day,

  466. I have this weird ability

  467. where when I'm on a Sunday,

  468. I actually know

  469. who's come to church

  470. and who hasn't.

  471. Often because I have the opportunity

  472. to stare at you all

  473. for 40 minutes

  474. and see who's sleeping

  475. and who's not.

  476. But somehow,

  477. I just kind of seem to know

  478. because I see in your face.

  479. And sometimes I see you

  480. and I'm like,

  481. oh, I see you.

  482. But by the time service finishes,

  483. you've gone

  484. because it's too overwhelming.

  485. So you have to go

  486. and there's no one you speak to.

  487. And I'm like,

  488. I wish I could speak to you.

  489. And I know that for some reason,

  490. the Chinese culture

  491. we have seemed to have

  492. more introverts than extroverts.

  493. So all of this is just terrifying,

  494. which is why we came up

  495. with the WhatsApp QR code.

  496. It's like,

  497. okay,

  498. if it's too hard for you

  499. to say hello here,

  500. that's okay.

  501. Please WhatsApp us

  502. and we'll talk,

  503. we'll have an introverted conversation.

  504. But eventually,

  505. we have to meet each other

  506. face to face

  507. because we're the gathering.

  508. You don't come to the gathering

  509. and you don't gather.

  510. That's,

  511. go find another church.

  512. But I feel how hard it is.

  513. I get it.

  514. I'm going to point out Caleb

  515. because it's just to embarrass him.

  516. Caleb came,

  517. he landed in Hong Kong

  518. a week and a half ago

  519. and last week he came to church

  520. for the very first time

  521. and didn't know anyone.

  522. Now,

  523. all of you have been there

  524. at some point.

  525. You all came for the first time

  526. at some point.

  527. Apart from Hank.

  528. Hank built this whole place

  529. and he's been around

  530. for a hundred years.

  531. But,

  532. you feel that.

  533. And Caleb,

  534. after the service,

  535. I know I'm embarrassing you here,

  536. I'm not really sorry.

  537. And he just came right up

  538. and he said,

  539. hey,

  540. it's my first time.

  541. I was like,

  542. oh,

  543. thank goodness for you

  544. that you would come

  545. and speak to me

  546. because if you had just drifted off,

  547. I wouldn't be able

  548. to get to know you.

  549. I wouldn't find out

  550. that actually he's

  551. going to be teaching

  552. in my kids' school

  553. that actually he went

  554. to the same church

  555. as Gabe in Toronto

  556. and I'm like,

  557. oh,

  558. that is so cool.

  559. Please come back.

  560. Please have lunch.

  561. And we got to know each other

  562. and you got to know

  563. different people.

  564. But I'll tell you,

  565. I do not underestimate

  566. how hard it is

  567. for someone to walk

  568. into a room like this

  569. and say hello

  570. to someone you don't know.

  571. Can we make that the norm?

  572. Can we try to?

  573. Can we try and say,

  574. hey,

  575. how are you?

  576. What's your name?

  577. You look different to me.

  578. You sound different to me.

  579. I'd like to get to know you

  580. because you can see

  581. it is so hard.

  582. It is so hard to do that.

  583. Anyway,

  584. there's a problem.

  585. They can't be the ones

  586. that do it.

  587. So verse three,

  588. they say this,

  589. therefore,

  590. brothers,

  591. pick out from among you

  592. seven men of good repute,

  593. full of the spirit

  594. and of wisdom,

  595. whom we will appoint

  596. to this duty.

  597. Can you point,

  598. can you bring out

  599. seven people

  600. who are actually

  601. already serving,

  602. who have a good reputation,

  603. so they're not shady at all.

  604. They are known people.

  605. Can you have them come out

  606. so that they can help

  607. distribute the food,

  608. help to serve the food?

  609. And that is the beginning

  610. of the word deacon.

  611. Now,

  612. our church,

  613. we have a board of deacons

  614. who are here to serve.

  615. They may not be the ones

  616. ministering and preaching

  617. the word of God

  618. week in,

  619. week out,

  620. but my goodness,

  621. they spend a lot of time

  622. serving in many different ways.

  623. Now,

  624. this isn't the official start.

  625. It wasn't saying,

  626. Stephen,

  627. from this moment forth,

  628. you shall be called

  629. Deacon Stephen.

  630. It wasn't that.

  631. In fact,

  632. the term was just used

  633. to describe someone

  634. who is serving.

  635. I think the actual

  636. deacon name title

  637. came later.

  638. This was just Stephen

  639. and a group of other guys

  640. who were of good repute

  641. and were filled

  642. with the Holy Spirit

  643. who were chosen

  644. to come and actually

  645. help out.

  646. And who did they pick?

  647. They picked seven guys

  648. who had Greek names.

  649. Why?

  650. Because that was the need.

  651. Greek-speaking widows

  652. didn't get food.

  653. Let's get the guys

  654. that are in

  655. so who can understand

  656. the announcements

  657. and who can speak to them

  658. and so they can know

  659. what their needs are

  660. and that they can then

  661. serve these widows.

  662. Isn't that just good to hear?

  663. And it's interesting.

  664. What they didn't say

  665. was can we pick

  666. seven people

  667. who are quick thinkers,

  668. are fast on their feet

  669. and good with their hands

  670. and hold plates really well.

  671. It wasn't a competence test.

  672. It was a character test.

  673. In Young Life,

  674. when we look for people

  675. and hire for people,

  676. we often go with the four Cs.

  677. Do you remember

  678. what the four Cs are, Gabs?

  679. No?

  680. First, no.

  681. That's why he's not working

  682. with Young Life anymore.

  683. Do you remember, JJ?

  684. Huh?

  685. No, the four Cs

  686. of a potential candidate.

  687. This is a great show

  688. for Young Life staff,

  689. by the way.

  690. Christian.

  691. Christian.

  692. No!

  693. I mean, yes.

  694. I mean, yes.

  695. That is a prerequisite.

  696. Calling.

  697. Thank you.

  698. It's slowly coming back.

  699. Calling is the first one.

  700. I've often said,

  701. don't go into ministry

  702. because you're going in

  703. for the money

  704. because you've just made

  705. the terrible decision

  706. in your life.

  707. That is not why you do it.

  708. You go there

  709. because God has called you to.

  710. That is, that's it.

  711. Because it's way harder

  712. than you ever thought

  713. it would be.

  714. So you only,

  715. because calling is the thing

  716. that you're going to hold on to,

  717. is the pillow

  718. that you're going to hold on to

  719. when you're crying at night time.

  720. Calling.

  721. Aaron, can you help me out here?

  722. Competency.

  723. So that is one of them.

  724. We're not going to pick someone

  725. who is going to be terrible

  726. at the job

  727. because that doesn't serve them

  728. and it doesn't serve the people

  729. they're trying to serve.

  730. So calling and competency.

  731. Another one is chemistry.

  732. People just want to be around you.

  733. They need to be,

  734. they need to like you.

  735. If you're a complete jerk,

  736. we're not going to hire you

  737. if we're honest

  738. because that just doesn't work.

  739. And the final one

  740. is character.

  741. Yeah, character.

  742. Because you need to be just,

  743. and I often said this,

  744. it's not about gifting.

  745. It's not about being so good

  746. at doing something

  747. so you can do it.

  748. Here's the problem

  749. with church though.

  750. We have needs.

  751. We have music team needs.

  752. We're stuck with Paul

  753. leading us on worship every week.

  754. We need someone

  755. who can play the guitar properly.

  756. You can play the guitar properly.

  757. You're barely Christian.

  758. Why don't you do it?

  759. That's not what we need to do.

  760. We look at the person's heart.

  761. We look at the person's character

  762. and go,

  763. is that person a man

  764. of good repute

  765. filled with the spirit?

  766. But there is such a temptation

  767. just to put people

  768. who are good at things

  769. into places

  770. just to do things.

  771. And the cheesy quote goes,

  772. we put people

  773. into places

  774. where their gifting takes them

  775. but their character

  776. cannot keep them.

  777. And then that's destructive.

  778. And then we see things

  779. falling apart

  780. and we wonder why.

  781. For deacons,

  782. the apostle Paul later

  783. in 1 Timothy 3

  784. has a list,

  785. has a CV,

  786. has a job description.

  787. So later when I invite Tony up,

  788. you can just evaluate him

  789. and judge him

  790. on that list,

  791. 1 Timothy 3.

  792. The problem is

  793. we often in the church,

  794. we look for people

  795. who are smart,

  796. accomplished,

  797. gifted,

  798. and we put them

  799. into positions of leadership

  800. but we don't check

  801. 1 Timothy 3

  802. and then we wonder

  803. why our churches

  804. are falling apart.

  805. We have to have people

  806. who are godly,

  807. men and women

  808. who are serving.

  809. There's no point

  810. having an amazing musician

  811. like Paul

  812. but if he doesn't even come,

  813. he only comes to church

  814. 25% of the time

  815. then I'm not going to have him

  816. just play that one week

  817. because that's not

  818. what we're looking for.

  819. It doesn't matter

  820. if you have someone

  821. who's really good at speaking

  822. and they're not willing

  823. to stack chairs

  824. after service,

  825. that's no good either.

  826. Never trust anyone

  827. who's not willing

  828. to stack chairs.

  829. I am so,

  830. so serious.

  831. We grew up in a church

  832. where there was no one,

  833. the pastor is basically

  834. the pastor,

  835. the janitor,

  836. the administrator,

  837. the treasurer,

  838. everything.

  839. And every Sunday morning

  840. he'd do the chairs

  841. and clean up afterwards

  842. and then we come to Hong Kong

  843. where we have a team

  844. that we've hired

  845. to do those things

  846. or at least on the other side.

  847. If you've not been

  848. to the other side,

  849. it's a wonderful church.

  850. We're in a gold building

  851. over there

  852. with tons of people

  853. who are hired

  854. to kind of look after us

  855. and they're great people

  856. but the danger is

  857. we just get them

  858. to do everything

  859. and all the responsibility

  860. goes away from us.

  861. So when we started

  862. this place,

  863. they were like,

  864. do we need to send

  865. side staff to come over

  866. to help you set up

  867. the chairs?

  868. I said,

  869. absolutely not.

  870. Don't deprive us

  871. of the gift of service.

  872. Don't deprive us

  873. of the chance

  874. to be able to serve

  875. other people.

  876. So worship starts

  877. at 10 a.m.

  878. when the life groups

  879. take turns

  880. and I'm like,

  881. I watch everyone

  882. do the chairs

  883. and for some reason

  884. it's the same every week

  885. but it looks equally

  886. confusing every week.

  887. But I'm like,

  888. that's worship.

  889. That's worship.

  890. Actually,

  891. Mel's one of my favorites

  892. because she's really

  893. serious about it

  894. and she's like

  895. putting the chairs

  896. in the right places

  897. and I'm like,

  898. that's so good

  899. seeing someone worship

  900. through setting up chairs.

  901. Please don't deprive us

  902. of that gift.

  903. And then

  904. verse 4,

  905. chapter 6,

  906. verse 4,

  907. he says this,

  908. but we will devote

  909. ourselves to prayer

  910. and to the ministry

  911. of the word.

  912. If I look

  913. at a modern day

  914. pastor's schedule

  915. and I did a survey

  916. on where they spend

  917. most of their time,

  918. it'll be with deep,

  919. great sadness

  920. that we'll say

  921. not much of it

  922. is to do

  923. with ministering

  924. the word.

  925. The pressure

  926. on a modern day

  927. pastor is huge.

  928. If you look at

  929. the book of Ephesians

  930. and the fivefold offices

  931. and all the different

  932. roles that are played

  933. in the church,

  934. there's an apostle,

  935. there's a prophet,

  936. there's an administrator,

  937. there's all these

  938. other things

  939. and yet in the church

  940. we only hire pastors.

  941. And so the pastor

  942. is asked to be

  943. your math tutor

  944. for your kid

  945. and also asked

  946. to be your marriage

  947. counselor because you guys

  948. are going through

  949. a tough thing

  950. and is asked to be

  951. the one who's going

  952. to help you

  953. take you to the doctors

  954. as well.

  955. And suddenly

  956. the pastors

  957. are doing so many

  958. other things

  959. and we wonder

  960. why they're burning out.

  961. And then we wonder

  962. why the flock

  963. is not healthy

  964. because the pastor

  965. is not doing

  966. what he's supposed

  967. to do

  968. or she's supposed

  969. to do.

  970. What it's supposed

  971. to be

  972. is there are people

  973. who are doing

  974. different things.

  975. So let me just

  976. side note here

  977. don't put all your

  978. expectations on our pastors.

  979. Don't put your

  980. expectations on me.

  981. I can guarantee you

  982. I will disappoint you

  983. at some point.

  984. But also

  985. if you're sat there

  986. going man

  987. James is really

  988. hopeless at that

  989. but wait

  990. that's my gifting.

  991. Then please don't

  992. just sit there

  993. and go

  994. he sucks

  995. at that.

  996. Come and help.

  997. My job

  998. my commitment

  999. to you

  1000. is to be devoted

  1001. to the ministry

  1002. of the word

  1003. and to praying

  1004. for all of you

  1005. and to caring

  1006. for you.

  1007. All the other things

  1008. I'm going to need

  1009. your help in.

  1010. Again mission statement

  1011. two.

  1012. It's also

  1013. 1 Corinthians 12.

  1014. Everyone has

  1015. a different part

  1016. to play.

  1017. If you're not

  1018. playing the part

  1019. you're missing out.

  1020. And you might say

1021. oh but I'm so busy

  1022. I'm too tired.

  1023. Do you know

  1024. my work is just

  1025. and I'll say this

  1026. I know it's hard

  1027. but you know

1028. if you don't do it

  1029. I know it's hard

  1030. and I get

  1031. Hong Kong schedules

  1032. especially

  1033. that's tricky.

  1034. That's tricky.

1035. But if you don't do it

  1036. actually you deprive

  1037. yourself of the one

  1038. place where you can

  1039. be filled with life.

  1040. Because it is better

1041. to give than to receive.

  1042. Try.

  1043. Do whatever it is

  1044. that you can do.

1045. I was talking to Julian

  1046. about this and

  1047. Julian currently is

  1048. climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

  1049. I didn't know

  1050. there was no

  1051. height restriction

1052. so you can climb it.

  1053. So he's climbing it

  1054. right now

  1055. and actually

  1056. bless him

1057. I love him so much.

1058. One thing that he's doing

1059. he's in the field of law

1060. just like Nathan here is

  1061. in Hong Kong

  1062. and super busy

  1063. and he's like

  1064. James I so want

  1065. to do this

1066. and do this reading plan

1067. and go and serve here

1068. and do this and that

  1069. but I'm coming home

  1070. at 10

  1071. and I'm doing emails

  1072. until 1.

  1073. I just

  1074. I want to

  1075. but I can't

  1076. and I say

1077. there is so much grace.

  1078. If you have little

  1079. just do little.

  1080. If you have more

  1081. do more.

  1082. The key is

  1083. don't hold back

  1084. from him

  1085. and in giving

  1086. you will receive.

1087. That's how you get fed

1088. and that's how you get filled

  1089. and it's funny

1090. as soon as they assigned

1091. other people to do it

  1092. verse 5

  1093. the whole gathering

  1094. is pleased

  1095. and so everyone's happy

  1096. because everyone's

  1097. doing their role

  1098. instead of

  1099. 10% of the people

  1100. doing 90%

  1101. of the work

  1102. and 90%

  1103. of people

  1104. being unhappy

  1105. now we're starting

  1106. to distribute

  1107. the work

  1108. in the right way

  1109. and everyone's happy

  1110. isn't that amazing?

  1111. Can't wait

  1112. to the day

  1113. where we can say

  1114. and the whole

  1115. and it pleased

  1116. the whole gathering

  1117. because everyone's

  1118. doing what they're

  1119. supposed to do.

  1120. That's the dream.

  1121. That's the vision

  1122. and so they bring

  1123. these guys out

  1124. I'm not going

  1125. to read their names

  1126. these

  1127. then they set

  1128. and they laid

  1129. hands on them

1130. they laid hands on them

  1131. this wasn't

  1132. hey can you help

  1133. there's a bunch

  1134. of hungry people

  1135. can you help

  1136. go now

  1137. feed them

  1138. no it's

  1139. hey this may look

  1140. like feeding people

  1141. physical food

1142. but this is so much

  1143. more than that

  1144. so they commission

  1145. them and lay

  1146. their hands on them

  1147. and give the favor

  1148. of God

  1149. and the power

  1150. of God

  1151. onto them

  1152. because even you

  1153. feeding those widows

  1154. even you stacking

  1155. these chairs

1156. is an act of worship

  1157. and is filled

  1158. with the spirit

  1159. moving

  1160. that's it

  1161. there is no task

  1162. that is too small

  1163. for God to use

  1164. there are not only

  1165. three jobs

1166. in the whole of the church

  1167. whether it's preaching

  1168. or leading worship

  1169. and welcome team

1170. there are way more things

  1171. that we can do

  1172. to serve

  1173. and they are all

  1174. supernatural

  1175. they are all

  1176. spiritual

  1177. and then what

  1178. the word of God

  1179. it continued to increase

1180. and the number of disciples

  1181. multiplied

  1182. not that Stephen

  1183. then became

  1184. not that Stephen

1185. then hit a million followers

1186. not that then the hype

  1187. around him

  1188. got bigger and bigger

  1189. or the disciples

  1190. got bigger and bigger

  1191. it's funny

1192. you look at the book of Acts

  1193. those 12

  1194. their mentions

  1195. get less and less

1196. because it's not about them

  1197. it's about the spirit

  1198. of God

  1199. moving

1200. and the word of God

  1201. spreading

1202. and so we see that now

  1203. anyway

  1204. that's me talking

  1205. for now

1206. I want to invite you

  1207. invite Tony up

  1208. to interview him

  1209. a little bit

  1210. because Tony

1211. is one of our deacons

  1212. here in the church

1213. and so can we give

  1214. a round of applause

  1215. to Tony

  1216. to come up

  1217. I think Nathan's

1218. going to grab another one

  1219. for us

  1220. so this is Tony

  1221. Tony how long

1222. have you been a deacon

  1223. at this church for

  1224. I started when I was 32

1225. so I think this is

  1226. coming up to be

  1227. my 30th

  1228. 30 years

  1229. of being a deacon

1230. can you raise your hand

  1231. if you are

  1232. under 30 years old

  1233. okay

  1234. he's been

  1235. he's been being a deacon

1236. more than many of you

  1237. have been alive

  1238. that's how faithful

  1239. this man have been

1240. and it's not just him

  1241. I didn't know Agnes

1242. was going to be here

  1243. this Sunday

  1244. because I would have

  1245. dragged her up

  1246. and of course

  1247. Hank over there

  1248. has been a deacon

1249. how long have you been

  1250. a deacon for Hank?

  1251. 15 years

  1252. so you're like a youth

  1253. compared to Tony

1254. so my jokes of our age

1255. should go to this guy

  1256. over here

  1257. the deacon I wanted

  1258. to bring up

  1259. was actually Adrian

  1260. wife of Rocky

  1261. and she of course

  1262. is on the more

  1263. youthful side

  1264. compared to

  1265. the three musketeers

  1266. that I just mentioned

  1267. just to show you

  1268. that there's

  1269. but these are the

  1270. four deacons

  1271. that we have here

  1272. in the English gathering

  1273. they are part of

  1274. a wider church

  1275. deacons board

  1276. that I want to

1277. just talk a little bit

  1278. about

  1279. but maybe the first

  1280. question for you

  1281. is

  1282. what made you say

1283. yes to being a deacon

  1284. the first time

  1285. and why do you

  1286. keep saying yes

  1287. to being a deacon

  1288. for the 32nd year?

  1289. before I forgot

  1290. let me just

  1291. debunk a myth

  1292. that often

  1293. was associated

  1294. with deacon

  1295. deacons don't get paid

  1296. so that was

  1297. that was the

  1298. somehow the question

  1299. that always pops

  1300. in people's mind

  1301. and say hey

  1302. you know

  1303. are you getting paid

  1304. so that's not

  1305. the motivation

  1306. to say yes

  1307. well

  1308. if that doesn't

  1309. convince you

  1310. I don't know

  1311. why will

  1312. we'll take

  1313. applications

  1314. for deacons

  1315. just at the

  1316. right over there

1317. you do not get paid

  1318. will you reiterate

  1319. in fact

  1320. in the early stages

  1321. we're the ones

  1322. that actually

  1323. have to

  1324. to give more

  1325. just when

  1326. we're running

  1327. out of cash

1328. why did I say yes

  1329. I think it was

  1330. just a

  1331. very short history

  1332. I

  1333. came to

  1334. Kongfok

  1335. in

  1336. 80

  1337. at

  1338. year of 84

  1339. when this started

  1340. and then I left

  1341. for

  1342. living in the

  1343. US

  1344. in 89

  1345. I think

  1346. yeah

  1347. and then I came

  1348. back in 92

  1349. came back in 92

  1350. that was when

  1351. I was 32

  1352. and

  1353. Kongfok

  1354. has

  1355. split up

  1356. I think that was

  1357. the right word

  1358. into three churches

  1359. and

  1360. so the

  1361. amazing works

  1362. of God

  1363. was in play

  1364. and we

  1365. we now have

  1366. Kongfok

  1367. Tongfok

  1368. in Tonghawan

  1369. and then

  1370. Jinfok

  1371. in Jinshaji

  1372. so the three

  1373. suddenly

  1374. got

  1375. inspired people

  1376. I think there was

  1377. a little bit of

  1378. argument in the

  1379. background

  1380. so

  1381. the church

  1382. got split

  1383. into three

  1384. all my friends

  1385. and people

  1386. that are like

  1387. me

  1388. actually

  1389. early 30s

  1390. by the way

  1391. so if you're sat

  1392. here in your

  1393. early 30s

  1394. that was

  1395. Tony

  1396. it looks like

  1397. it was a long

  1398. time ago

  1399. but I just

  1400. want to relate

  1401. to you

  1402. this is you

  1403. this could be

  1404. you

  1405. so I left

  1406. for three years

  1407. and then I

  1408. came back

  1409. with the

  1410. family

  1411. and all my

  1412. friends were

  1413. in Tongfok

  1414. so the

  1415. natural thing

  1416. to do

  1417. was to join

  1418. my friends

  1419. in Tongfok

  1420. right

  1421. and then somehow

  1422. I had a

  1423. lunch with

  1424. another

  1425. sister in

  1426. Christ

  1427. and she

  1428. said

  1429. look

  1430. and I was

  1431. sharing

  1432. I was like

  1433. you know

  1434. I didn't know

  1435. what happened

  1436. suddenly all my

  1437. friends got

  1438. split into

  1439. three churches

  1440. and I didn't

  1441. know what to

  1442. do and I

  1443. need to go

  1444. maybe pick

  1445. one out of

  1446. the three

  1447. and somehow

  1448. through the

  1449. conversations

  1450. he said

  1451. well so

  1452. which church

  1453. do you think

  1454. needed you

  1455. most

  1456. and not

  1457. in a

  1458. kind of

  1459. condescending

  1460. way but

  1461. it was just

  1462. saying okay

  1463. you pick a

  1464. church not

  1465. because you're

  1466. comfortable with

  1467. people or

  1468. because you

  1469. know it's

  1470. close to you

  1471. and all of

  1472. that

  1473. you may want

  1474. to pick a

  1475. church that

  1476. can benefit

  1477. from your

  1478. presence and

  1479. that you'll be

  1480. able to

  1481. contribute and

  1482. all of that

  1483. so that was

  1484. the reason why

  1485. I stayed

  1486. and they

  1487. needed a lot

  1488. of people to

  1489. help because

  1490. our lead

  1491. pastor went

  1492. to Tongfolk

  1493. Peter

  1494. most of the

  1495. other deacons

  1496. the senior

  1497. ones also

  1498. you know

  1499. got kind

  1500. of split

  1501. so there

  1502. was a big

  1503. void in

  1504. terms of

  1505. leadership and

  1506. I said yes

  1507. and say okay

  1508. although if I

  1509. have no idea

  1510. I was the

  1511. youngest guy

  1512. I have no

  1513. idea what

  1514. to do but

  1515. I'm happy

  1516. and willing

  1517. to try

  1518. yeah wow

  1519. and I for

  1520. one I'm super

  1521. glad that you

  1522. said yes

  1523. that time

  1524. and the church

  1525. you've seen

  1526. you've overseen

  1527. the church in

  1528. so many

  1529. different ways

  1530. and of course

  1531. so yeah

  1532. I did my

  1533. fair share

  1534. of stacking

  1535. chairs

  1536. you did your

  1537. fair share

  1538. of stacking

  1539. chairs

  1540. I love to

  1541. cook for my

  1542. family so I

  1543. think I had

  1544. that attribute

  1545. of serving

  1546. food

  1547. yeah so

  1548. that's what

  1549. qualifies you

  1550. to be

  1551. yeah and

  1552. then

  1553. when you

  1554. are part

  1555. of a

  1556. family

  1557. you know

  1558. church is a

  1559. family

  1560. and you see

  1561. all the ups

  1562. and downs

  1563. of how family

  1564. grew and how

  1565. they argue

  1566. with each

  1567. other and

  1568. all of that

  1569. that's how

  1570. I felt

  1571. I was

  1572. very very

  1573. much

  1574. close to

  1575. God and

  1576. although I

  1577. still don't

  1578. know what

  1579. he wanted me

  1580. to do

  1581. on a daily

  1582. basis

  1583. but I

  1584. felt like

  1585. I'm close

  1586. to him

  1587. and I

  1588. felt that

  1589. through church

  1590. I'm able

  1591. to do at

  1592. least part

  1593. of the plan

  1594. and the

  1595. purpose that

  1596. he's given

  1597. me

  1598. and this is

  1599. not just

  1600. for the

  1601. English side

  1602. by the way

  1603. again I'll

  1604. say this

  1605. is just

  1606. there's a

  1607. much bigger

  1608. side behind

  1609. us which

  1610. is the

  1611. Chinese

  1612. church

  1613. and often

  1614. I get

  1615. asked by

  1616. my friends

  1617. at international

  1618. church

  1619. why are you

  1620. still at

  1621. a Chinese

  1622. church

  1623. they're

  1624. just

  1625. archaic

  1626. and red

  1627. tape

  1628. and conservative

  1629. and old

  1630. fashioned

  1631. and all

  1632. these things

  1633. and I'll

  1634. say something

  1635. very simple

  1636. I'll say

  1637. but that's

  1638. just where

  1639. my family

  1640. is

  1641. I don't

  1642. think

  1643. Christina

  1644. and I

  1645. would have

  1646. survived

  1647. in Hong Kong

  1648. without Agnes

  1649. Tony and

  1650. Hank

  1651. that's it

  1652. there's not

  1653. really much

  1654. else

  1655. and actually

  1656. it looks

  1657. bad on the

  1658. outside

  1659. sometimes

  1660. when you

  1661. look at

  1662. people

  1663. and you're

  1664. like oh

  1665. just old

  1666. fashioned

  1667. Chinese

  1668. churches

  1669. these are

  1670. just

  1671. these people

  1672. are the

  1673. most selfless

  1674. faithful

  1675. people

  1676. that I've

  1677. met

  1678. and so

  1679. they are

  1680. here to

  1681. serve

  1682. and so

  1683. if anyone

  1684. ever thinks

  1685. oh is it

  1686. an evil

  1687. empire over

  1688. that no

  1689. it is not

  1690. an evil

  1691. empire

  1692. sometimes

  1693. it can

  1694. look scary

  1695. I'll tell

  1696. you now

  1697. Hank

  1698. does look

  1699. scary

  1700. he looks

  1701. hard on

  1702. the outside

  1703. but he

  1704. is so

  1705. soft

  1706. so soft

  1707. on the

  1708. inside

  1709. we need

  1710. to know

  1711. that

  1712. and I

  1713. wanted

  1714. the chance

  1715. to introduce

  1716. you

  1717. and actually

  1718. maybe we

  1719. only have

  1720. two or

  1721. three more

  1722. minutes

  1723. so maybe

  1724. the big

  1725. question I

  1726. have for

  1727. you is

  1728. what do

  1729. you wish

  1730. people here

  1731. would know

  1732. about the

  1733. wider

  1734. church

  1735. what do I

  1736. wish

  1737. I

  1738. want to

  1739. I want to

  1740. just

  1741. spend a

  1742. little time

  1743. on the

  1744. evolution

  1745. of church

  1746. so when

  1747. we started

  1748. a little

  1749. time

  1750. yes

  1751. in a

  1752. minute

  1753. so we

  1754. started out

  1755. about 40

  1756. years ago

  1757. and it

  1758. was as

  1759. big as

  1760. gathering

  1761. at the

  1762. time

  1763. and then

  1764. it grew

  1765. and grew

  1766. and grew

  1767. we now

  1768. have

  1769. three different

  1770. congregations

  1771. English

  1772. Mandarin

  1773. and Cantonese

  1774. Cantonese

  1775. being the

  1776. longest one

  1777. and obviously

  1778. the most

  1779. people

  1780. around

  1781. 1500

  1782. I guess

  1783. so we

  1784. would do

  1785. that

  1786. 1500

  1787. 2000

  1788. if you

  1789. count all

  1790. the online

  1791. attendees

  1792. for church

  1793. so there's

  1794. a

  1795. evolution

  1796. of that

  1797. I want

  1798. this group

  1799. to

  1800. at least

  1801. appreciate

  1802. how God

  1803. puts in

  1804. all the

  1805. blessings

  1806. and the

  1807. support

  1808. where we

  1809. grew from

  1810. a church

  1811. of this

  1812. size

  1813. into

  1814. a church

  1815. of the

  1816. size

  1817. we are

  1818. and

  1819. I

  1820. had the

  1821. privilege

  1822. of

  1823. getting

  1824. the

  1825. English

  1826. ministry

  1827. started

  1828. seven

  1829. years

  1830. ago

  1831. so this

  1832. is like

  1833. 2.0

  1834. gathering

  1835. it's

  1836. 2.0

  1837. English

  1838. ministry

  1839. and so

  1840. I wish

  1841. that

  1842. the history

  1843. and all

  1844. the blessings

  1845. that God

  1846. has put

  1847. into the

  1848. Gong Fu

  1849. family

  1850. would

  1851. continue

  1852. continue to

  1853. flourish

  1854. in different

  1855. ways that

  1856. that's beyond

  1857. our imagination

  1858. and understanding

  1859. I wish

  1860. you all

  1861. knew

  1862. and

  1863. how all

  1864. the ups

  1865. and downs

  1866. I always say

  1867. to new

  1868. pastors and say

  1869. hey that's not

  1870. the worst

  1871. I have seen

  1872. worst

  1873. honestly

  1874. every time I

  1875. talk to Tony

  1876. it's kind of

  1877. like a therapy

  1878. session

  1879. and he's like

  1880. it could be

  1881. worse

  1882. it has been

  1883. worse

  1884. it has been

  1885. much worse

  1886. so when

  1887. God is

  1888. putting us

  1889. through these

  1890. trials and

  1891. tribulations

  1892. there is a

  1893. reason

  1894. right

  1895. and the

  1896. Bible says

  1897. that as

  1898. well

  1899. but it

  1900. is never

  1901. I mean

  1902. you would

  1903. feel that

  1904. he had

  1905. never

  1906. abandoned

  1907. us

  1908. and so

  1909. I think

  1910. gathering

  1911. is going

  1912. to go

  1913. through

  1914. some

  1915. hard times

  1916. you know

  1917. a very

  1918. jammed

  1919. place

  1920. and

  1921. Angus

  1922. is always

  1923. working on

  1924. air conditioning

  1925. and all of

  1926. that

  1927. and people

  1928. complain about

  1929. our screen

  1930. so

  1931. maybe there's a

  1932. reason why

  1933. God

  1934. want us to be

  1935. in the

  1936. cramped

  1937. area

  1938. so when we

  1939. do get a

  1940. bigger area

  1941. or like you

  1942. said

  1943. you know

  1944. there's a way

  1945. to evolve

  1946. and maybe

  1947. that's the

  1948. reason why

  1949. is there

  1950. so I wish

  1951. you all

  1952. can appreciate

  1953. that

  1954. and

  1955. help out

  1956. as James

  1957. has said

  1958. thank you

  1959. Tony

  1960. thank you

  1961. for all

  1962. that you

  1963. do

  1964. can we

  1965. give him

  1966. a round

  1967. of applause

  1968. maybe this

  1969. is a good

  1970. time to have

  1971. some practical

  1972. sharings

  1973. we are still

  1974. looking for a

  1975. place

  1976. Hank is

  1977. working

  1978. Tony's been

  1979. here for

  1980. so so long

  1981. Agnes

  1982. incredible

  1983. woman

  1984. I'm fairly

  1985. certain that

  1986. she reads

  1987. the Bible

  1988. more than

  1989. I do

  1990. partly because

  1991. she signed

  1992. up to a

  1993. program that

  1994. forces her

  1995. to do it

  1996. but she

  1997. signed up

  1998. to it

  1999. and so I'm

  2000. pretty sure

  2001. she reads

  2002. the Bible

  2003. more than

  2004. I do

  2005. and I'm

  2006. pretty sure

  2007. Hank spends

  2008. more time

  2009. at church

  2010. than I do

  2011. and he

  2012. lives all

  2013. the way

  2014. out in

  2015. Saikong

  2016. and so he

  2017. comes out

  2018. and he's

  2019. the current

  2020. chair of the

  2021. deacons board

  2022. and so he's

  2023. doing a lot

  2024. of things

  2025. just a couple

  2026. notes on that

  2027. a couple

  2028. things that

  2029. are to do

  2030. with the

  2031. wider

  2032. church

  2033. that I

  2034. think this

  2035. is the

  2036. time to

  2037. at least

  2038. share

  2039. about

  2040. is that

  2041. the wider

  2042. church does

  2043. have

  2044. membership

  2045. Tony and

  2046. Hank are

  2047. the ones

  2048. who teach

  2049. the membership

  2050. class

  2051. designed

  2052. maybe

  2053. and for

  2054. many years

  2055. delivered

  2056. to a very

  2057. Chinese

  2058. context

  2059. but of

  2060. course

  2061. it's evolving

  2062. and it's

  2063. changing

  2064. because actually

  2065. we're members

  2066. of the same

  2067. church

  2068. I mean

  2069. if you go

  2070. over there

  2071. it does

  2072. look very

  2073. different

  2074. they have

  2075. more chairs

  2076. more space

  2077. more

  2078. it's just

  2079. better

  2080. but we are

  2081. members too

  2082. so what

  2083. we're trying

  2084. to figure

  2085. out

  2086. especially

  2087. as this

  2088. next season

  2089. of the

  2090. gathering

  2091. happens

  2092. is actually

  2093. if there

  2094. are those

  2095. of you

  2096. here who

  2097. really are

  2098. like this

  2099. is my

  2100. home

  2101. this is my

  2102. home

  2103. my point

  2104. to you

  2105. will be

  2106. well then

  2107. prove it

  2108. come and

  2109. join us

  2110. and become

  2111. a member

  2112. will it

  2113. always be

  2114. fun

  2115. no

  2116. I mean

  2117. the church

  2118. plants that

  2119. happened

  2120. most of the

  2121. church plants

  2122. happened around

  2123. Hong Kong

  2124. because of

  2125. church splits

  2126. because people

  2127. are arguing

  2128. and people

  2129. are selfish

  2130. that's how

  2131. it always

  2132. that's usually

  2133. how it happens

  2134. it's not easy

  2135. but that's

  2136. what when you

  2137. become a member

  2138. you're saying

  2139. okay but this

  2140. is just my

  2141. family

  2142. you know

  2143. all the part

  2144. of it

  2145. and I'm going

  2146. to sit in

  2147. some of these

  2148. meetings that

  2149. we have

  2150. and they're

  2151. going to be

  2152. in Cantonese

  2153. and translated

  2154. to Mandarin

  2155. but that's

  2156. part of it

  2157. you see the

  2158. Hellenistic Jews

  2159. and the Hebrew

  2160. speaking Jews

  2161. this is similar

  2162. just Chinese

  2163. people who speak

  2164. different languages

  2165. all getting

  2166. together

  2167. why because

  2168. of Jesus

  2169. because this is

  2170. the family

  2171. that he brought

  2172. us to

  2173. so if that's

  2174. something that

  2175. you're interested

  2176. in can you

  2177. come and talk

  2178. to me

  2179. can you

  2180. have the

  2181. courage of

  2182. Caleb

  2183. and just

  2184. walk up

  2185. to me

  2186. and go

  2187. hey

  2188. I think

  2189. this is

  2190. what I'd

  2191. like

  2192. and I know

  2193. I'm counting

  2194. the cost

  2195. I know

  2196. what this

  2197. is

  2198. actually you

  2199. don't know

  2200. yet right now

  2201. because I haven't

  2202. told you

  2203. but if you're

  2204. interested in

  2205. finding out

  2206. what the cost

  2207. of it is

  2208. then actually

  2209. come and find

  2210. me

  2211. not a monetary

  2212. cost by the way

  2213. it's going to

  2214. cost you your

  2215. life in a

  2216. different way

  2217. can you come

  2218. and find out

  2219. about it

  2220. maybe that

  2221. on another note

  2222. for me

  2223. is just to

  2224. share with you

  2225. actually this

  2226. is this

  2227. August is my

  2228. last month

  2229. as executive

  2230. director of

  2231. Young Life

  2232. I'm stepping

  2233. down

  2234. and from there

  2235. I'm coming

  2236. full time

  2237. to be at

  2238. Kong Fook

  2239. Church

  2240. so that's

  2241. part of the

  2242. thing

  2243. I don't know

  2244. it's worth

  2245. clapping about

  2246. but that's

  2247. definitely

  2248. it's happening

  2249. it's too late

  2250. now

  2251. I want to

  2252. tell you

  2253. what that

  2254. also means

  2255. I'm joining

  2256. everyone here

  2257. to just

  2258. spending all

  2259. the time

  2260. supporting

  2261. leading the

  2262. church here

  2263. but there's

  2264. also another

  2265. side in the

  2266. church

  2267. there's a

  2268. much bigger

  2269. side in the

  2270. church

  2271. that speaks

  2272. Cantonese

  2273. and there's

  2274. Explorers which

  2275. is the youth

  2276. ministry

  2277. there's RML

  2278. which is the

  2279. young adults

  2280. ministry

  2281. and there's

  2282. the children's

  2283. district which

  2284. is enormous

  2285. I want to be

  2286. helping oversee

  2287. those things

  2288. too

  2289. and so

  2290. pray for me

  2291. need your

  2292. prayers

  2293. pray for my

  2294. family even

  2295. more than

  2296. what you can

  2297. pray for me

  2298. and it's a

  2299. journey

  2300. and there are

  2301. going to be

  2302. no solutions

  2303. and it's

  2304. not going to

  2305. be an

  2306. overnight change

  2307. that suddenly

  2308. makes everything

  2309. better

  2310. but it's going

  2311. to be part of

  2312. this together

  2313. and finally

  2314. just if you're

  2315. thinking about

  2316. well how do I

2317. give and how do I

  2318. scatter there's

  2319. stuff over there

  2320. there's plenty of

  2321. stuff over there

  2322. but there's also

  2323. KFCC the care

  2324. centre that Agnes

  2325. talked about a few

  2326. months ago in

  2327. Aberdeen not too

  2328. far from where

  2329. Kelly lives where

  2330. we want to go

  2331. and support and

  2332. pour out to the

  2333. community and

  2334. actually that's a

  2335. church initiative

  2336. now we need

  2337. people who teach

  2338. English we need

  2339. physios that we

  2340. still need to talk

  2341. about we need

  2342. we need people

  2343. who are just

  2344. willing to come

  2345. and do different

  2346. classes with the

  2347. local people on

  2348. this in Aberdeen

  2349. and Wachohang area

  2350. so just interested

  2351. in that I'll tell

  2352. you this we're

  2353. going to try and

  2354. figure out something

  2355. we have lots of

  2356. different things

  2357. going on in

  2358. church there's a

  2359. group going to

  2360. the Congo

  2361. Erica and Aidan

  2362. and Godfrey you

  2363. guys and a few

  2364. others are going

  2365. to the Congo

  2366. there's the group

  2367. going to the

  2368. Philippines there's

  2369. a group that came

  2370. to the Young

  2371. Lives Teen Moms

  2372. Camp in June

  2373. there's a whole

  2374. group that came

  2375. to Young Life

  2376. Camp in July

  2377. that was super

  2378. fun there are

  2379. there's a whole

  2380. group that goes

  2381. on a Saturday

  2382. morning to go

  2383. and serve in a

  2384. prison things are

  2385. happening but I

  2386. know for sure there

  2387. are those of you

  2388. who are sat here

  2389. like yeah but I'm

  2390. not doing anything

  2391. well then join us

  2392. and maybe we need

  2393. to do better at

  2394. coming up with

  2395. church wide things

  2396. that maybe are

  2397. easier for you to

  2398. come and sign up

  2399. to just as a

  2400. starter so these

  2401. are the things

  2402. it's a bit of an

  2403. update in regards

  2404. to church and

  2405. membership and I

  2406. hope that you will

  2407. continue to pray

  2408. for us my

  2409. question is this and

  2410. this is where I'll

  2411. finish and I think

  2412. we might have time

  2413. Paul to finish

  2414. with the song

  2415. why did Jesus

  2416. put this passage

  2417. here why did the

  2418. Holy Spirit put

  2419. this passage in

  2420. Acts 6 here

  2421. talking about just

  2422. the needs there's

  2423. needs everywhere but

  2424. why did they show

2425. this I think if we

  2426. use even borrow the

  2427. DBS Bible study

  2428. question methods

  2429. then he's trying to

  2430. show us different

  2431. things what's he

  2432. trying to show us

  2433. about people the

  2434. people are selfish

  2435. the people gravitate

  2436. towards people who

  2437. are just like them

  2438. but we should go

  2439. out of our comfort

  2440. zones and hang out

  2441. with people who

  2442. are not the same

  2443. that's what's he

  2444. trying to get us

  2445. to do he's trying

  2446. to mobilize us

  2447. so here's the

  2448. question what are

  2449. you doing to

  2450. serve what gifts

  2451. do you have or

  2452. what gifts do you

  2453. need to grow

  2454. because you you

  2455. actually have them

  2456. but maybe you

  2457. think oh but I'm

  2458. not good enough

  2459. but then I say

  2460. well let's grow it

  2461. together it's not

  2462. going to grow if

  2463. you're just by

  2464. sitting on the

  2465. couch you're

  2466. going to have to

  2467. try and practice

  2468. you should ask

  2469. Christina the

  2470. first time I

  2471. preached she said

  2472. oh she'll tell

  2473. you it was

  2474. terrible and now

  2475. it's just a little

  2476. less terrible but

  2477. you've got a gift

  2478. that you need to

  2479. grow so that's

  2480. what it's saying

  2481. and what does

  2482. this passage tell

  2483. us about God

  2484. that he cares for

  2485. those on the

  2486. fringe that there

  2487. is a dividing wall

  2488. of hostility as

  2489. though in Ephesians

  2490. 2 and that we

  2491. remember that we

  2492. are one time was

  2493. separated from him

  2494. that we had no

  2495. hope and without

  2496. God but he became

  2497. peace to those who

  2498. were far off and

  2499. to those who are

  2500. near Jesus says to

  2501. both sides the rich

  2502. the poor the left

  2503. the right the

  2504. Hellenistic Jews

  2505. and the Hebrew

  2506. speaking Jews has

  2507. come to the

  2508. middle by my

  2509. blood you will be

  2510. united that the

  2511. wall that dividing

  2512. wall of hostility

  2513. will now be broken

  2514. down through my

  2515. body through the

  2516. cross the cross is

  2517. the thing that

  2518. unites us all

  2519. together it

  2520. reconciles us all

  2521. together the cross

  2522. tears down the

  2523. walls that are

  2524. between people the

  2525. cross causes to

  2526. work together the

  2527. cross is the one

  2528. that says there is

  2529. no insider outsider

  2530. anymore there is no

  2531. cool and uncool

  2532. anymore we all fall

2533. short of the glory of

2534. God but we are all

  2535. justified freely by

  2536. his grace as a

  2537. gift would you come

  2538. and be united with

  2539. the person sat next

2540. to you even if they

  2541. are different why

  2542. because of the cross

  2543. I'll finish with this

  2544. quote N.T.

  2545. Wright says this in

  2546. Christ the middle

  2547. wall of partition is

  2548. torn down the

  2549. church that tolerates

  2550. ethnic or economic

  2551. barriers mocks the

2552. cross let us be a

  2553. people that looks to

  2554. the other that is

  2555. all let's let's pray

  2556. and I'll invite Paul

  2557. to come up

  2558. Jesus we know that

  2559. you you said you

  2560. tear down the temple

2561. and you rebuild it in

  2562. three days what we

  2563. didn't realize is the

  2564. temple would be in

2565. us they would be here

  2566. dwelling among us that

  2567. you have made your

  2568. dwelling place in us

2569. that you are now the

  2570. cornerstone you are the

2571. head of this church and

  2572. you care for the

  2573. fringe you hate

  2574. division you care about

  2575. the needs of your

2576. children and you call us

2577. to serve just as the

  2578. first deacons did but

2579. you don't tell us to do

  2580. anything that you weren't

  2581. willing to do yourself

2582. you are the servant king

2583. you came and not to be

  2584. served but to serve

2585. so would your spirit guide us

2586. now show us what it is that

2587. we need to do not just

2588. because we want to be good

2589. people but we serve because

2590. our king our lord our saviour

2591. served and the ultimate act of

2592. service the ultimate act of

2593. love by giving us yourself

2594. onto the cross and dying for us

2595. breaking down every wall we

2596. dare not mock the cross we

2597. seek to only live appropriately

  2598. respond accordingly which is

  2599. radically which is

2600. selflessly help us love the

2601. other Jesus would you be the

2602. center and the head of our

  2603. church

2604. Jesus one day every knee will

2605. bow and every tongue will

2606. confess that you are lord

2607. you are the saviour of the

2608. world you are the head of this

2609. church and it is all about you

2610. it's not about what we can do or

2611. will do it's about what you did

2612. and who you are we make you the

  2613. center

2614. thank you lord in your name we

  2615. pray amen
