  1. We've been going through the book of Acts.

  2. We've been talking about, hey, it's really fun to gather,

  3. but wouldn't it even be better to scatter?

  4. We are all recipients, we are all blessed by people who scattered

  5. ! To share the gospel out of their own comfort zone.

  6. And we all acknowledge that we don't leave our own comfort zones

  7. because we like it, because it's what?

  8. It's comfortable.

  9. And so the only way that we start to really get pushed out

  10. of our comfort zones is if we are pushed, pushed out.

  11. It's okay.

  12. I promise you it's more painful out here for these people.

  13. Let me gather my thoughts.

  14. So last week the church was being persecuted.

  15. People were being dragged out of their homes into prisons.

  16. And then Philip goes into enemy territory, into Samaria,

  17. and he preaches the gospel and he brings joy.

  18. And that was just a great example of just that heart to be willing to scatter.

  19. I don't care.

  20. You can take me out of my home.

  21. You can take me out of my comfort zone, but I'm going to go somewhere else.

  22. And I'm going to keep sharing the gospel.

  23. And I'm going to keep bringing the good news of the kingdom of God

  24. and Jesus Christ to wherever I go.

  25. And it was just this incredible story.

  26. And then it made me think, well, what about us here?

  27. Maybe you're sat here going, okay, I like to go to church.

  28. Okay, I want to scatter.

  29. What does that look like for me?

  30. Because actually I hear stories about people, actually we're going to find out today,

  31. and it's one of my favorite stories, about someone who gets guided,

  32. literally spoken to by God and say, hey, go here and then speak this.

  33. And wouldn't we all love that?

  34. Love that kind of just specific instruction as to where to go,

  35. where to scatter, and where to share the good news.

  36. And we wish we had that.

  37. And we see today that Philip has this.

  38. But let me tell you, actually, we can have this too.

  39. But there are some requirements to having the instructions from God like Philip did,

  40. and, well, some prerequisites.

  41. First of all, you have to be like Philip and choose to follow in Jesus

  42. when the whole of society was trying to persecute you.

  43. So if you can do that, then you're on to step one.

  44. After that is when you are willing to leave your own home and go,

  45. then that is a good start.

  46. And then after that, you're willing to go into places that are incredibly uncomfortable,

  47. like Samaria.

  48. If you're willing to do that and still share the gospel

  49. and still be relentless at sharing the gospel, then that's good.

  50. And then when you get there, you will allow the power of God to work through you

  51. to bring healing and to bring joy into the city.

  52. If you're willing to do all of those things

  53. and be confronted by people who are against you,

  54. who are threatening to throw you into prison,

  55. if you are willing to do all those things,

  56. then maybe you, me, like Philip,

  57. will also get the instruction that comes from God in such a way.

  58. I just wish it's this story that we're about to read is fascinating.

  59. God speaks to him and tells him to go somewhere to do something very specific.

  60. And then once he does it, God zaps him,

  61. zaps him and he just goes into a different place.

  62. I just think, oh God, can you just make it easy for me when I scatter?

  63. I've heard these stories where you tell someone,

  64. hey, go to this place, stand on this street corner,

  65. and there will be someone in a red t-shirt.

  66. Tell them about this.

  67. I wish I had that. Do you?

  68. And yet, very often, I'm unwilling to do what Philip did,

  69. to stand up against the current beliefs in society,

  70. willing to go out of my comfort zone,

  71. willing to start moving even through persecution.

  72. And I find that actually God likes to guide cars that are moving.

  73. He doesn't seem to really want to guide cars that are stationary,

  74. that aren't willing to move.

  75. And so my prayer is that as we read this next story,

  76. again, one of my favorites, it's,

  77. actually, God, how does this apply to me?

  78. How do I live?

  79. How do I get in on this kind of action?

  80. This is exciting. This is fun.

  81. And we're going to read it.

  82. And I'm going to actually invite Caleb to come and read it for us.

  83. So as always, can I invite you to stand for the word of the Lord?

  84. Amen.

  85. Today's passage is from Acts chapter 8, verses 26 to 40.

    Acts 8:26–40

  86. Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,

  87. Rise and go toward the south, to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  88. This is a desert place.

  89. And he rose and went.

  90. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch,

  91. a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,

  92. who was in charge of all her treasure.

  93. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning,

  94. seated in his chariot and was reading the prophet Isaiah.

  95. And the spirit said to Philip,

  96. Go over and join this chariot.

  97. So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked,

  98. Do you understand what you are reading?

  99. And he said,

  100. How can I, unless someone guides me?

  101. And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

  102. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this.

  103. Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter,

  104. and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,

  105. so he opens not his mouth.

  106. And his humiliation, justice was denied him.

  107. Who can describe his generation?

  108. For his life is taken away from the earth.

  109. And the eunuch said to Philip,

  110. About whom, I ask you,

  111. does the prophet say this?

  112. About himself or about someone else?

  113. Then Philip opened his mouth and began,

  114. beginning with the scripture,

  115. he told him the good news about Jesus.

  116. And as they were going along the road,

  117. they came to some water,

  118. and the eunuch said,

  119. See, here is water.

  120. What prevents me from being baptized?

  121. And he commanded the chariot to stop,

  122. and they both went down into the water,

  123. Philip and the eunuch,

  124. and he baptized him.

  125. And when they came up out of the water,

  126. the spirit of the Lord carried Philip away,

  127. and the eunuch saw him no more.

  128. And he went on his way rejoicing.

  129. But Philip found himself in Azotus,

  130. and as he passed through

  131. and preached the gospel to all the towns

  132. until he came to Caesarea.

  133. This is the word of the Lord.

  134. Praise be to God.

  135. Please take a seat.

  136. Thank you, Caleb.

  137. That's a really nice voice.

  138. That's like a radio voice.

  139. It reminded me when I was jet-lagged

  140. and I needed to go to sleep,

  141. so I'd turn on my Bible app

  142. and listen to just the Bible,

  143. and it was a voice like that.

  144. Okay.

  145. We found your spiritual gift.

  146. Okay.

  147. So if you sum up this whole book,

  148. if it's like,

  149. hey, I'm too lazy to read the whole thing

  150. or I'm too forgetful to remember the whole thing,

  151. what is it?

  152. You boil it all down.

  153. It's the first commandment.

  154. It's the greatest commandment.

  155. Love the Lord your God

  156. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength,

  157. and love your neighbor as yourself.

  158. Love.

  159. And then the Great Commission.

  160. So the Great Commandment

  161. and then the Great Commission.

  162. If I was to boil everything down,

  163. and the Great Commission is,

  164. go, therefore,

  165. and make disciples of all nations.

  166. The word nations actually can be translated

  167. also ethnicities.

  168. It's go to the whole world

  169. and share the gospel.

  170. I asked someone yesterday,

  171. hey, what does it mean to be a disciple for you?

  172. And he said,

  173. well, actually,

  174. next month I'm going to Cambodia.

  175. I'm actually going to share the gospel there.

  176. It's going to wherever there are people.

  177. And where there are people,

  178. there is a need for the good news.

  179. And that's what it is.

  180. But that often sounds quite big, right?

  181. We're called to go save the world.

  182. This story,

  183. today's story,

  184. tells us actually,

  185. when we talk about going to share the gospel,

  186. it's not really running the best program

  187. to go and save the world necessarily.

  188. It really boils down to just

  189. people-on-people conversation.

  190. It boils down to personal evangelism.

  191. Are we willing to have these conversations

  192. with the people that God has placed around us

  193. to share the good news of Jesus?

  194. That's all it is.

  195. And what I'm here to show you today

  196. is that this passage is fascinating

  197. because of the two people that are involved.

  198. First, Philip,

  199. and second, the Ethiopian.

  200. And I want to break this down for you.

  201. And I found this just a fascinating,

  202. fascinating story.

  203. Verse 26 says this.

  204. So, just remember,

  205. Philip's been pushed out of his own home

  206. and out of his city,

  207. goes to Samaria and keeps sharing the gospel.

  208. That's where he is.

  209. And then he goes to convert

  210. just a whole bunch of people.

  211. Simon the mystician is involved.

  212. And then he carries on.

  213. And he's growing a ministry

  214. among Samaritans.

  215. In Samaria.

  216. And this is exciting.

  217. He's like, God, these people.

  218. These people that the Jews usually don't like.

  219. But now, they're accepting God.

  220. And they're accepting Christ.

  221. How incredible is that?

  222. He's growing a ministry.

  223. He might even have a gathering.

  224. They might also need to move into a new property

  225. because they're starting to get full.

  226. And then the angel of the Lord,

  227. at that moment, tells him,

  228. now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,

  229. rise and go toward the south

  230. to the road that goes down

  231. from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  232. In that moment,

  233. when things are going well,

  234. when his ministry is growing,

  235. God tells him,

  236. now I want you to leave.

  237. This does not make sense.

  238. This does not make sense.

  239. And he has to walk a long time

  240. to get to this next place.

  241. And just in case that we didn't really understand

  242. what this place was,

  243. Luke here tells us,

  244. verse 26,

  245. this is a desert place.

  246. So he's got a ministry that is growing in Samaria.

  247. And yet God says,

  248. hey, pause,

  249. one sec,

  250. I need you to go

  251. and I need you to go to a desert place.

  252. It doesn't make sense at all.

  253. But what does he do?

  254. Straight away,

  255. and he rose and went.

  256. There was just this obedience that he has.

  257. He had to walk 40 miles.

  258. Can you imagine what he was thinking

  259. during these 40 miles?

  260. But God,

  261. do you remember the Simon,

  262. the magician?

  263. Do you look at all these people

  264. that need the gospel?

  265. Why don't you want me to stay there?

  266. And yet his heart for scattering just remains.

  267. He only has really one goal,

  268. and that is to follow and pursue God's call,

  269. to be obedient.

  270. And so he goes to the desert place.

  271. And then from there,

  272. I just wonder,

  273. can you see,

  274. I hope it's not lost on you.

  275. When we talk about scattering,

  276. we're really talking about

  277. just us obeying whatever God wants us to do.

  278. The book of Acts,

  279. if you look at the title in your Bible,

  280. the book of Acts is called

  281. the Acts of the Apostles.

  282. If I was to change it,

  283. it would be the Acts of the Holy Spirit

  284. through the apostles.

  285. Because really,

  286. it's all the Holy Spirit.

  287. So if you're here wondering,

  288. oh, I don't know.

  289. I don't know about scattering.

  290. I don't know how it's going to work.

  291. I don't know what to say.

  292. Then actually,

  293. my encouragement to you is actually

  294. just let God lead you.

  295. You just have to obey.

  296. And at some point,

  297. you'll have to open your mouth,

  298. which is what Philip does,

  299. but you just have to obey

  300. and let him guide you.

  301. For those of us who are the surfers

  302. in our community here,

  303. I've loved that analogy.

  304. That when you are going to scatter,

  305. it is like surfing.

  306. You cannot create the waves by yourself.

  307. All you can do is catch that taxi

  308. to Big Wave Bay with your board

  309. and then just go into the water.

  310. And then you're still waiting

  311. for nature to do its thing.

  312. And only then are you able to surf.

  313. Sharing the gospel,

  314. scattering is really the same.

  315. Just are we obedient?

  316. Are we willing?

  317. Is it really,

  318. is really all it takes?

  319. Even when it doesn't make sense.

  320. Even when we are taken

  321. to desert places,

  322. that walk for 40 miles

  323. that Philip would have had to take,

  324. it would be like,

  325. I don't understand.

  326. I don't,

  327. where am I going?

  328. Just do a random place

  329. between Jerusalem and Gaza

  330. just to stand there.

  331. What do you want me to do, God?

  332. But God says,

  333. please go.

  334. And then he meets someone.

  335. He meets someone

  336. that's very, very interesting.

  337. And I want to tell you

  338. a bit about this person.

  339. And verse 27,

  340. and there was an Ethiopian,

  341. a eunuch,

  342. a court official of Candace,

  343. queen of the Ethiopians,

  344. who was in charge

  345. of all her treasure.

  346. This is what,

  347. unpacking this character

  348. is one of my favorite

  349. things to do.

  350. Because you look and go,

  351. well, I don't know

  352. if I can relate

  353. with an Ethiopian eunuch.

  354. And yet,

  355. if you just listen

  356. just for the next 10, 15 minutes,

  357. this captivated my heart

  358. as I was looking

  359. at this person

  360. and why he was there

  361. at that moment

  362. and why God told Philip

  363. to go to him

  364. is just fascinating.

  365. It blew my mind

  366. and I hope it blows yours.

  367. But if you've heard me

  368. say this then,

  369. actually,

  370. every time I share this,

  371. I get excited

  372. because I just love

  373. what this story represents.

  374. And so he sees this.

  375. And remember,

  376. it's the Holy Spirit

  377. that's doing all of it.

  378. And he meets,

  379. and there was an Ethiopian,

  380. a eunuch,

  381. a court official

  382. of Candace,

  383. Queen of the Ethiopians.

  384. Ethiopia, okay?

  385. That time it was called,

  386. it actually is modern-day Sudan.

  387. It was a very wealthy place

  388. with iron mining.

  389. And so this person

  390. was actually

  391. a very important person.

  392. And later you see

  393. a court official

  394. of Candace,

  395. Queen of the Ethiopians,

  396. who was in charge

  397. of all her treasure.

  398. So they were in,

  399. this country was in charge

  400. of iron smelting

  401. and gold mining,

  402. and this person

  403. was in charge

  404. of all the treasure.

  405. This was the CFO

  406. of Ethiopia.

  407. He was that important.

  408. The other thing is,

  409. he was a eunuch,

  410. which means his body

  411. was altered, okay?

  412. Just a bit of context there.

  413. If you were to reach

  414. such a level

  415. in government,

  416. you had to,

  417. most of the time,

  418. be family.

  419. If you were not family,

  420. and you were just a commoner

  421. rising through the ranks,

  422. working your way up

  423. to be the CFO

  424. of this government,

  425. you would have had

  426. to basically get castrated.

  427. Why?

  428. Because the families

  429. wouldn't trust you.

  430. Because they couldn't

  431. trust this person

  432. that you wouldn't

  433. take over the country.

  434. So in order for you

  435. to get to that place,

  436. in order for this person

  437. to get to that place,

  438. he would have had

  439. to sacrifice a lot.

  440. And just before you think,

  441. well, okay,

  442. I don't know if I know

  443. any people who are

  444. in that same position.

  445. Well, do you know people

  446. in Hong Kong who have,

  447. because of their careers,

  448. sacrificed family?

  449. Because of their ambitions

  450. to get to the top,

  451. to become the CFO,

  452. that actually they have

  453. left their family

  454. and left the things

  455. that are important behind?

  456. That's this person.

  457. He's given everything

  458. that he can

  459. to climb up to the top

  460. and now he is at the top.

  461. Isn't that just interesting?

  462. And of course,

  463. he was Ethiopian,

  464. but he was also

  465. going to Jerusalem,

  466. which means he was

  467. a Gentile convert

  468. to Judaism.

  469. Okay?

  470. So he was someone

  471. who wasn't a Jew,

  472. but had committed

  473. to becoming a Jew

  474. and now wanted to go

  475. to Jerusalem to worship.

  476. Ethiopian,

  477. making this journey

  478. about a thousand miles.

  479. So one way,

  480. this would have taken

  481. about two,

  482. three months.

  483. CFO of Ethiopia,

  484. in charge of all

  485. the queen's finances,

  486. having given up everything,

  487. including his own family

  488. and his own future,

  489. travels for two,

  490. three months

  491. to go to Jerusalem

  492. to worship.

  493. What would he have

  494. had to say

  495. to his government,

  496. to his colleagues,

  497. to his queen

  498. that he's doing?

  499. Why did he want

  500. to travel all the...

  501. He would have had

  502. to take in a sabbatical.

  503. It would have had

  504. to be no pay leave.

  505. It would have to be

  506. extended leave.

  507. Why?

  508. I think it's because

  509. this guy is spiritually

  510. dissatisfied.

  511. He has everything

  512. that he could ever want.

  513. He's given up everything

  514. to get to where he is,

  515. to be the CFO,

  516. to have all the power

  517. and to have all the wealth.

  518. And yet there was

  519. still something missing.

  520. What triggers someone

  521. to have everything

  522. and yet still leave

  523. their jobs

  524. for nearly up to six months

  525. to go on this pilgrimage

  526. because they are searching?

  527. For something.

  528. Have you met people

  529. in Hong Kong

  530. who have given up family

  531. to pursue career,

  532. to get everything

  533. that they thought

  534. they wanted,

  535. only to get to the top

  536. and realize

  537. it wasn't what

  538. they thought it was?

  539. Have you met

  540. those kinds of people?

  541. I have.

  542. Isn't it fascinating

  543. as even just as we

  544. understand this story

  545. about why he's going

  546. to Jerusalem?

  547. Interesting.

  548. Something else

  549. that's interesting.

  550. He's reading.

  551. Not many people

  552. in those days could read.

  553. What's he reading?

  554. He's reading a scroll.

  555. Do you have a scroll?

  556. I don't have a scroll.

  557. This guy's an important person.

  558. He also cared enough.

  559. Not only could he read

  560. but he wanted to read this.

  561. This person

  562. who has everything,

  563. who's given up a lot

  564. to get there

  565. is now dissatisfied

  566. and takes

  567. an extended break

  568. from work.

  569. Can you imagine

  570. how he would explain this

  571. to his colleagues

  572. in Ethiopia?

  573. And of course,

  574. not part of the family,

  575. he could risk

  576. his own job.

  577. He could come back

  578. six months later

  579. and actually we've replaced you.

  580. We realized that actually

  581. we didn't need you

  582. as CFO.

  583. He risked everything.

  584. Gave up everything

  585. to go on this journey.

  586. The story continues to go.

  587. And so Philip walks,

  588. was basically probably

  589. waiting on this desert road,

  590. waiting for the next instruction.

  591. And then,

  592. here he goes,

  593. verse 29 says this.

  594. And the spirit said to Philip,

  595. go over and join this chariot.

  596. Again,

  597. God,

  598. I wish you would speak

  599. to me like this.

  600. Stand on the road,

  601. wait,

  602. and then as you see

  603. this chariot,

  604. hey,

  605. go over there.

  606. And so he goes

  607. and he walks over.

  608. He probably had to

  609. break into a light jog

  610. to keep up with the chariot.

  611. And so I can just imagine

  612. this just funny moment

  613. where he's like

  614. just jogging along the chariot

  615. and then peeks into the window.

  616. Hey,

  617. hey,

  618. can I help you?

  619. Do you,

  620. and actually,

  621. so he sees,

  622. maybe in his first jump,

  623. he sees he's reading.

  624. Second jump,

  625. he sees,

  626. oh,

  627. it's the prophet Isaiah.

  628. Oh,

  629. interesting.

  630. I remember that one.

  631. And then,

  632. hey,

  633. do you understand

  634. what you're reading?

  635. And then this line,

  636. I think is so packed,

  637. given the context

  638. to what I'm about

  639. to share with you.

  640. He says this,

  641. do you understand

  642. what you're reading?

  643. And he said,

  644. how can I,

  645. unless someone guides me?

  646. Well,

  647. that's a little bit

  648. passive aggressive,

  649. Mr. Ethiopian eunuch.

  650. Why?

  651. I mean,

  652. he's just a friendly guide

  653. waiting for you

  654. in the desert.

  655. Why are you suddenly

  656. all aggressive about this?

  657. Well,

  658. he's on his way back

  659. from Jerusalem.

  660. See,

  661. the thing about

  662. this Ethiopian eunuch

  663. that maybe I didn't

  664. understand before

  665. was he had everything.

  666. He gave up a lot.

  667. He was spiritually

  668. dissatisfied,

  669. which took him

  670. on this journey

  671. where he said,

  672. I've got everything now

  673. and it still doesn't

  674. satisfy me.

  675. He gets to Jerusalem,

  676. but I think he only,

  677. he gets there

  678. and he realizes something

  679. that actually he's not

  680. allowed in the temple.

  681. Deuteronomy 23

  682. says this

  683. and explicitly says

  684. no emasculated male

  685. could be included

  686. within the Jewish community.

  687. There is an incredibly,

  688. incredibly high chance

  689. that this man travels

  690. 1,100 miles

  691. from Ethiopia

  692. to Jerusalem,

  693. gets there,

  694. takes the no pay leave,

  695. spends three months

  696. traveling there,

  697. gets there,

  698. gets to the door,

  699. gets to the temple

  700. and then it gets

  701. turned around.

  702. So now I'm like,

  703. okay,

  704. now you have a right

  705. to be passive aggressive

  706. because he's heading home

  707. and he's like,

  708. what do I do?

  709. I don't even,

  710. the one place I thought

  711. I might find

  712. some satisfaction

  713. where I thought

  714. I might find

  715. some answers,

  716. they won't let me in.

  717. So he's on his way home

  718. and then this random guy

  719. is jumping up and down

  720. going,

  721. do you understand?

  722. He's like,

  723. of course I don't understand.

  724. How can I understand

  725. unless someone guides me?

  726. And what's he reading?

  727. The passage that he's reading

  728. I think is actually important

  729. and let me just read it

  730. to you again,

  731. verse 32.

  732. Now the passage of the scripture

  733. that he was reading

  734. was this,

  735. like a sheep

  736. he was led to the slaughter

  737. and like a lamb

  738. before its shearer

  739. is silent

  740. so he opens not his mouth.

  741. In his humiliation

  742. justice was denied him.

  743. Who can describe

  744. his generation

  745. for his life

  746. is taken away

  747. from earth.

  748. And the eunuch said to Philip,

  749. about whom I ask you

  750. does the prophet say this?

  751. About himself

  752. or about someone else?

  753. He's looking at this passage

  754. and going,

  755. now we're not supposed

  756. to read the Bible like this

  757. but I'm sure you and I

  758. have all done this before.

  759. You look at the Bible

  760. and you read something

  761. and you're like,

  762. well that sounds like me.

  763. You can see yourself

  764. in the Bible

  765. but that's not really

  766. the point of the Bible.

  767. The point is that you see

  768. Jesus in scripture

  769. but often we're looking at,

  770. I think that's me.

  771. I've just been humiliated.

  772. Justice was denied me.

  773. And so he goes

  774. and he asks Philip,

  775. who's this talking about?

  776. Now where's this passage?

  777. It's Isaiah 53.

  778. It's where we hear

  779. about the suffering servant.

  780. It's where we hear

  781. about the man of sorrows.

  782. It's the prophet Isaiah

  783. prophesying Jesus

  784. who is to come,

  785. who is going to be pierced

  786. for our transgressions.

  787. And he's reading this

  788. and he doesn't understand.

  789. I mean,

  790. I think we can all empathize

  791. with that when we're reading

  792. the prophet Isaiah.

  793. We're looking at it like,

  794. nope,

  795. who is this?

  796. I have no idea.

  797. But can you feel the pain

  798. of just the context?

  799. This is probably month four now

  800. of him taking this step away

  801. from work to do this

  802. and he's on his way home

  803. without any answers.

  804. He's like,

  805. what is this?

  806. Who is this?

  807. Now,

  808. weird man,

  809. as you pop and ask me,

  810. do I understand?

  811. The answer is no.

  812. And no one's willing

  813. to explain it to me.

  814. How am I supposed to learn

  815. if no one teaches me?

  816. This tells me something else,

  817. a slight tangent,

  818. which is we need people

  819. around us to help us.

  820. This man was incredibly intellectual.

  821. How did he get to where he was

  822. without being intellectual?

  823. Right?

  824. So he was incredible.

  825. He could have said,

  826. Philip,

  827. hey,

  828. all good.

  829. I'm going to figure this out myself.

  830. I'm going to read this Bible.

  831. I'm going to find some commentaries.

  832. I'm going to understand

  833. who this is.

  834. But no,

  835. he says,

  836. I need help.

  837. We all need to be in a place

  838. sometimes where we go,

  839. I need help.

  840. I need help.

  841. I'm looking at the scripture

  842. and I don't truly understand

  843. what it means.

  844. I'm looking at the scripture.

  845. Now I've understood what it means

  846. and I actually don't know

  847. how to apply it.

  848. I think,

  849. I hope,

  850. I pray,

  851. that's why we're here.

  852. Together.

  853. Not because I have all the answers

  854. but because here

  855. we can ask questions together

  856. and get to a place

  857. that maybe we can start

  858. to understand a little bit more

  859. about what it means

  860. to be a believer of Christ

  861. and to be a follower of Christ.

  862. We need people.

  863. Yes,

  864. I know AI is pretty good

  865. at answering deep apologetics questions.

  866. It's pretty good.

  867. Use it.

  868. But my encouragement to you

  869. is use it in community.

  870. Use it with people

  871. because you look at some

  872. of those answers

  873. and you're like,

  874. oh,

  875. I don't know if that's true.

  876. What do you think?

  877. Don't do it on your own.

  878. Don't head down these rabbit holes

  879. on your own.

  880. We all need someone.

  881. And then Philip opened his mouth.

  882. I love that.

  883. Verse 35,

  884. he says,

  885. and he opens his mouth

  886. and told him the good news

  887. about Jesus.

  888. Basically what he's doing

  889. is he's explaining to him

  890. the gospel.

  891. When he's saying,

  892. well,

  893. Mr. Ethiopian,

  894. Mr. CFO,

  895. clearly you have a lot of money.

  896. If I may,

  897. I can tell you

  898. that actually this person,

  899. this person who was led

  900. like a lamb to slaughter,

  901. this person who was humiliated

  902. and denied justice,

  903. may feel like you,

  904. but actually it was Jesus.

  905. And he's explaining this to him

  906. that actually,

  907. again,

  908. what he does is

  909. he spreads the gospel.

  910. He preaches the good news.

  911. What's the bad news

  912. that the Ethiopian

  913. is going through?

  914. The Ethiopian is thinking,

  915. well,

  916. I'm dissatisfied,

  917. I am dejected,

  918. and now I'm rejected.

  919. I'm cast out.

  920. I'm cut off

  921. from the Jewish community.

  922. But my people

  923. that I came from

  924. also now

  925. are going to think

  926. I'm weird

  927. because I've decided

  928. that the things

  929. that we're pursuing

  930. in Ethiopia

  931. are also not worth it.

  932. So there is no hope.

  933. So that's his bad news.

  934. And then Philip comes in

  935. with the good news,

  936. which is,

  937. hey,

  938. there was someone

  939. who was cast out,

  940. who was cut off

  941. for you and I.

  942. And because of that,

  943. we are now allowed in.

  944. You don't need to go

  945. into Jerusalem,

  946. into a temple,

  947. because now you are forever

  948. eternally accepted

  949. by a community

  950. of Christ followers.

  951. Can you feel

  952. the good news

  953. coming through?

  954. Like,

  955. you tried this.

  956. You've tried everything

  957. in the world.

  958. You're now trying this

  959. and you still got rejected.

  960. But let me tell you,

  961. Christ came to

  962. preach peace to you,

  963. you who were far off.

  964. And now you are brought close

  965. and now you have access

  966. to the Father

  967. through his spirit.

  968. That would have been

  969. such good news.

  970. And the penny drops

  971. in that moment

  972. for the Ethiopian.

  973. He's like,

  974. okay.

  975. And then it's funny.

  976. He says this.

  977. And as they were going

  978. along the road,

  979. they came to some water

  980. and the eunuch said,

  981. see,

  982. here is water.

  983. What prevents me

  984. from being baptized?

  985. And he commanded

  986. the chariot to stop.

  987. So you can see

  988. the penny drops.

  989. He's like,

  990. I get it now.

  991. I get it now

  992. that there was someone

  993. who was actually

  994. cast off in my place,

  995. a substitute

  996. that put it into my place

  997. so that I can now

  998. have access.

  999. Stop the chariot.

  1000. Shut the front door.

  1001. Who can stop me

  1002. from getting baptized?

  1003. That's what he's saying.

  1004. He's like,

1005. those people who stopped me

1006. from getting into the temple

  1007. before,

  1008. you can't stop this

  1009. because I now have

  1010. some good news

  1011. because Jesus Christ

1012. came and tore that veil

1013. and now I can have access

  1014. straight to the Father

  1015. through him.

1016. What is going to stop me

  1017. from getting baptized?

  1018. And Philip's like,

  1019. I don't know,

  1020. nothing I guess.

  1021. When you have lived

  1022. with bad news

  1023. all of your life,

  1024. when you have been

  1025. dissatisfied

  1026. and have been pursuing

1027. through all kinds of means

  1028. and when you finally

  1029. understand the gospel

  1030. which is,

  1031. I don't need to prove myself

  1032. to people anymore.

  1033. I am deeply loved.

  1034. I am a child of God.

  1035. That moment,

  1036. the lights come on

  1037. and you're like,

1038. I just need to commit

  1039. to him.

  1040. It's interesting,

  1041. Isaiah 50.

  1042. Of course,

  1043. when he was reading

1044. it wasn't through an app

1045. because he was more serious

  1046. about the Bible

  1047. than that.

  1048. But it wasn't also

  1049. through this

1050. where it was kind of pages.

1051. It was through a scroll.

  1052. Right?

  1053. And so actually,

  1054. what's really fascinating

  1055. is,

1056. and this is me just

  1057. imagining a little bit

  1058. but also still

1059. using the word of God.

  1060. Isaiah 53

  1061. is talking about

  1062. the man of sorrows.

  1063. It's talking about

  1064. 53 verse 4.

1065. Surely he has borne our griefs

  1066. and carried our sorrows

1067. and yet he was esteemed,

  1068. him stricken,

  1069. yet smitten by God

  1070. and afflicted

  1071. but he was pierced

  1072. for our transgressions.

  1073. He was crushed

  1074. for our iniquities.

  1075. All we like sheep

  1076. have gone astray.

  1077. Verse 7.

  1078. He was oppressed

  1079. He was oppressed

  1080. and afflicted

  1081. yet he opened

  1082. not his mouth.

  1083. Can you imagine?

  1084. The Ethiopian would have

  1085. arrived at that temple

  1086. being rejected

  1087. and he couldn't say a thing.

  1088. So he's just

1089. wondering who is this person?

  1090. Like a lamb

1091. that is led to the slaughter

  1092. and like a sheep

  1093. that before its shearers

  1094. is silent

  1095. so he opened

  1096. not his mouth.

  1097. As he was looking

  1098. and opening this scroll

  1099. of Isaiah 53

  1100. I can't help but imagine

  1101. that he would have

  1102. glanced down

  1103. and seen Isaiah 56

1104. because it would have been

1105. the same line of sight

1106. and if you just peek later

  1107. into Isaiah 56

  1108. the title

  1109. and I'm getting goosebumps

  1110. even as I imagine

  1111. him reading this

  1112. and him seeing this

1113. in his line of sight

1114. the title of that bit

1115. at least for us now

  1116. is Salvation for Foreigners.

  1117. And it reads this

  1118. Thus says the Lord

  1119. Keep justice

  1120. and do righteousness

  1121. for soon my salvation

  1122. will come

  1123. and my righteousness

  1124. be revealed.

  1125. Blessed is the man

  1126. who does this

1127. and the son of man

  1128. who holds it fast

  1129. who keeps the Sabbath

  1130. not profaning it

  1131. and keeps his hand

  1132. from doing any evil.

  1133. Here we go

  1134. Let not the foreigner

  1135. who has joined himself

  1136. to the Lord

  1137. say the Lord

  1138. will surely separate me

  1139. from his people

1140. and let not the eunuch

  1141. say behold

  1142. I am a dry tree

1143. for thus says the Lord

  1144. to the eunuchs

  1145. who keep my Sabbaths

  1146. who choose the things

  1147. that please me

1148. and hold fast my covenant

1149. I will give in my house

  1150. and within my walls

  1151. a monument

  1152. and a name

  1153. better than sons

  1154. and daughters

  1155. I will give them

  1156. an everlasting name

1157. that shall not be cut off.

  1158. You can bet

  1159. that Philip

  1160. used Isaiah 56

  1161. to explain to him

  1162. Isaiah 53.

  1163. He's like

  1164. Ethiopian man

  1165. I know

  1166. what you've sacrificed

1167. to get to where you're at.

  1168. I know that you're looking

  1169. at your life now

  1170. and go everything

  1171. about it

1172. is just vapor in the wind

  1173. it's just mist

  1174. it's not satisfied you

  1175. but you also know

1176. that you now have no hope

1177. because you won't have children

1178. your name will not be passed on

1179. but I'm here to tell you

  1180. some good news

  1181. that salvation is not

  1182. just for the Jews

  1183. in fact

  1184. salvation is exactly

  1185. for the people

1186. who are on the fringe

1187. who have been cut off

  1188. by society.

  1189. Salvation is for you

  1190. and because of Jesus

  1191. that's the good news

  1192. my friend

  1193. because of Jesus

  1194. you now

  1195. will have

  1196. a name

  1197. within my walls

  1198. better than sons

  1199. and daughters

1200. and I will give them

  1201. an everlasting name

1202. that shall not be cut off.

  1203. Can you imagine

  1204. how

  1205. he would have wrestled

  1206. with this

1207. for the whole of his life

  1208. as a eunuch

  1209. saying what you're saying

  1210. you're saying

  1211. that I will have a name

  1212. that will last forever.

  1213. Man I don't have children

1214. and I will never be able

  1215. to have children

1216. and yet you're saying here

  1217. that I can.

  1218. They turn me away

  1219. and you're here saying

  1220. that there's a savior

  1221. there's a Christ

  1222. who came to me

  1223. instead.

  1224. Isn't that just

  1225. mind blowing?

  1226. Isn't that

  1227. earth shattering?

  1228. Isn't that

  1229. life changing?

  1230. He says

  1231. I have been

  1232. a dry tree

  1233. that's what it says

  1234. right Isaiah 56

1235. and let not the eunuch

  1236. say behold

  1237. I am dry tea

  1238. and the eunuch

  1239. says I have been

  1240. a dry tree

1241. for a very long time

  1242. but now you

  1243. opening up

  1244. the scriptures

  1245. to me

  1246. you explaining

  1247. that now I have

  1248. access to the father

  1249. and that I get

  1250. to be his child

  1251. and that I will

  1252. my name will be

  1253. for

  1254. I completely

  1255. understand now

  1256. why he said

  1257. stop the chariot

  1258. baptize me now

  1259. strange man

  1260. I have no idea

  1261. who you are

  1262. but you've just

  1263. opened my eyes

  1264. to the Christ

  1265. of course

  1266. Philip was explaining

  1267. to him

  1268. that Jesus

  1269. was the substitute

  1270. that we

  1271. as men

  1272. and women

  1273. have chosen

  1274. our own way

  1275. what we call

  1276. that is sin

  1277. and that when we

  1278. chose our own way

  1279. that way led us

  1280. to death

  1281. that led us

  1282. to a path

  1283. of destruction

  1284. and we would

  1285. never be allowed

  1286. in the temple

  1287. again

  1288. the eunuch

  1289. would have

  1290. understood that

  1291. for sure

  1292. he lived it

  1293. but then

  1294. he who

  1295. was without

  1296. sin

  1297. the sinless

  1298. lamb

  1299. was sacrificed

  1300. became the

  1301. substitute

  1302. for us

  1303. atoned for

  1304. our sins

  1305. atonement

  1306. that beautiful

  1307. word that I've

  1308. said before

  1309. atonement

  1310. at one

  1311. that we were

  1312. once broken

  1313. apart

  1314. but now

  1315. Christ has

  1316. atoned

  1317. and so now

  1318. that we are

  1319. at one

  1320. atoned

  1321. with God

  1322. again

  1323. that we are

  1324. allowed in

  1325. because

  1326. Christ has

  1327. now made

  1328. his dwelling

  1329. place in us

  1330. that we

  1331. are the

  1332. temple

  1333. the Ethiopian

  1334. is a changed

  1335. man

  1336. can you imagine

  1337. the joy

  1338. and elation

  1339. I personally

  1340. believe it's

  1341. at that

  1342. moment

  1343. the Ethiopian

  1344. then goes

  1345. back to

  1346. Africa

  1347. and then a

  1348. whole wave

  1349. of Christianity

  1350. is born

  1351. in Africa

  1352. in 1900

  1353. there were

  1354. 9 million

  1355. Christians in

  1356. Africa

  1357. in the year

  1358. 2000

  1359. 100 years

  1360. later

  1361. it went

  1362. from 9

  1363. million

  1364. to 380

  1365. million

  1366. the organization

  1367. I was part of

  1368. and still

  1369. involved with

  1370. Young Life

  1371. is global

  1372. so there's

  1373. over 105

  1374. countries in

  1375. the world

  1376. the fastest

  1377. growing

  1378. continent

  1379. Africa

  1380. every time

  1381. I've met

  1382. someone

  1383. or been

  1384. to Africa

  1385. and seen

  1386. people

  1387. who choose

  1388. to follow

  1389. Christ

  1390. they just

  1391. give life

  1392. bring life

  1393. they just

  1394. completely

  1395. change my

  1396. view of

  1397. what Christianity

  1398. should be

  1399. someone who

  1400. grew up

  1401. in England

  1402. whose village

  1403. had a

  1404. building

  1405. at a church

  1406. that had

  1407. no one

  1408. inside

  1409. and you

  1410. have this

  1411. idea

  1412. that Christianity

  1413. is just

  1414. for Western

  1415. Europeans

  1416. and then you

  1417. go to

  1418. somewhere like

  1419. Africa

  1420. and it

  1421. completely

  1422. smashes that

  1423. out

  1424. and you're

  1425. like

  1426. wow

  1427. when Jesus

  1428. said

  1429. go therefore

  1430. and make

  1431. disciples of

  1432. all nations

  1433. all ethnicities

  1434. because there

  1435. is something

  1436. beautiful

  1437. that every

  1438. culture

  1439. every race

  1440. brings to

  1441. the kingdom

  1442. of God

  1443. that all

  1444. are welcome

  1445. even

  1446. eunuchs

  1447. even

  1448. CFOs

  1449. that

  1450. brothers and

  1451. sisters

  1452. is the good

  1453. news

  1454. I'll finish

  1455. with these

  1456. quotes

  1457. John Stott

  1458. says this

  1459. the story

  1460. of Philip

  1461. and the

  1462. Ethiopian

  1463. is a

  1464. striking

  1465. example

  1466. of personal

  1467. evangelism

  1468. Philip

  1469. was sensitive

  1470. to the

  1471. spirit's

  1472. guidance

  1473. the Ethiopian

  1474. was receptive

  1475. to the

  1476. scriptures

  1477. meaning

  1478. and both

  1479. were responsive

  1480. to the

  1481. gospel's

  1482. demands

  1483. can we

  1484. heed that

  1485. call

  1486. that actually

  1487. it doesn't

  1488. take much

  1489. it just

  1490. takes us

  1491. being obedient

  1492. being sensitive

  1493. to the

  1494. spirit's

  1495. guiding

  1496. hey that

  1497. person

  1498. speak to

  1499. that

  1500. person

  1501. have the

  1502. courage

  1503. at the

  1504. office

  1505. just to

  1506. hey how

  1507. are you

  1508. doing

  1509. how can

  1510. I pray

  1511. for you

  1512. and that's

  1513. all it

  1514. requires

  1515. and you'll

  1516. be shocked

  1517. and you'll

  1518. I'll tell you

  1519. why you'll be

  1520. shocked and

  1521. surprised

  1522. because I

  1523. love asking

  1524. people how

  1525. can I pray

  1526. for you

  1527. and I

  1528. usually meet

  1529. Christians

  1530. and they're

  1531. like oh

  1532. that's refreshing

  1533. I'm like

  1534. that's

  1535. Christians

  1536. I think

  1537. we as a

  1538. church have

  1539. lost the

  1540. art of

  1541. praying for

  1542. one another

  1543. after a

  1544. conversation

  1545. after a

  1546. lunch and

  1547. coffee

  1548. hey actually

  1549. as we

  1550. finish

  1551. honestly it's

  1552. a great way

  1553. to finish

  1554. a lunch

  1555. as well

  1556. hey how

  1557. can I

  1558. pray for

  1559. you

  1560. why don't

  1561. we do

  1562. that even

  1563. as a

  1564. church

  1565. why don't

  1566. we do

  1567. that to

  1568. people

  1569. who actually

  1570. don't know

  1571. God

  1572. who actually

  1573. are in

  1574. deep

  1575. need of

  1576. prayer

  1577. because they

  1578. are also

  1579. on that

  1580. journey that

  1581. the Ethiopian

  1582. eunuch was

  1583. on climbing

  1584. up sacrificing

  1585. getting to

  1586. the top and

  1587. realizing there's

  1588. nothing there

  1589. we can be

  1590. that right

  1591. so when you're

  1592. having lunch with

  1593. someone or when

  1594. you're talking to

  1595. someone in your

  1596. home or at

  1597. your workplace

  1598. why don't you

  1599. ask God hey

  1600. is there anything

  1601. you want me to

  1602. do here

  1603. do you need me

  1604. to open my

  1605. mouth

  1606. that's what

  1607. Philip did

  1608. and something

  1609. else that tells

  1610. you is that no

  1611. one no one is

  1612. too far

  1613. no one is too

  1614. far from the

  1615. gospel so next

  1616. week we'll find

  1617. out the

  1618. murderer

  1619. Saul is

  1620. also not

  1621. too far

  1622. even an

  1623. Ethiopian

  1624. eunuch

  1625. traveling a

  1626. thousand miles

  1627. will be

  1628. reached by

  1629. God

  1630. we have a

  1631. responsibility

  1632. simply just to

  1633. be obedient

  1634. and to ride

  1635. that wave

  1636. follow the

  1637. spirits leading

  1638. and from

  1639. there a

  1640. desert road

  1641. can turn

  1642. into a

  1643. place where

  1644. God can

  1645. dwell

  1646. where a

  1647. life can

  1648. be completely

  1649. changed

  1650. one man

  1651. Philip

  1652. being obedient

  1653. another man

  1654. the Ethiopian

  1655. being hungry

  1656. and the

  1657. kingdom of

  1658. God moves

  1659. isn't that

  1660. incredible

  1661. I hope

  1662. that inspires

  1663. you and

  1664. finally there's

  1665. something actually

  1666. that makes me

  1667. really like

  1668. Philip and

  1669. actually we

  1670. don't hear

  1671. much from

  1672. him after

  1673. this

  1674. so he

  1675. baptizes him

  1676. and he

  1677. commanded the

  1678. chariot to

  1679. stop and

  1680. they both

  1681. went down

  1682. into the

  1683. water

  1684. Philip and

  1685. the eunuch

  1686. and he

  1687. baptized him

  1688. and when

  1689. they came

  1690. up out of

  1691. the water

  1692. the spirit

  1693. of the

  1694. Lord carried

  1695. Philip away

  1696. and the

  1697. eunuch saw

  1698. him no more

  1699. can you imagine

  1700. that scene

  1701. this is straight

  1702. from Harry

  1703. Potter so

  1704. he'll just

  1705. baptize him

  1706. and then the

  1707. Ethiopian

  1708. can you imagine

  1709. just that moment

  1710. how loved that

  1711. Ethiopian would

  1712. have felt

  1713. that God

  1714. I was rejected

  1715. from a temple

  1716. that I traveled

  1717. so far to get

  1718. and yet you

  1719. would send

  1720. someone to me

  1721. in the desert

  1722. to do this

  1723. and then go

  1724. and literally

  1725. that would have

  1726. been hammered

  1727. home

  1728. he's gone now

  1729. that means it

  1730. was specifically

  1731. for me

  1732. and it's funny

  1733. Philip

  1734. the one who

  1735. gets zapped

  1736. but Philip

  1737. found himself

  1738. at Azotus

  1739. and as he

  1740. passed through

  1741. he preached

  1742. the gospel

  1743. to all the

  1744. towns until

  1745. he came to

  1746. Caesarea

  1747. so he does

  1748. this

  1749. and then he

  1750. he's like

  1751. I'm not on

  1752. the desert

  1753. road anymore

  1754. I'm in Azotus

  1755. and it's as if

  1756. nothing crazy

  1757. has happened

  1758. he's like

  1759. oh I guess

  1760. I'll carry on

  1761. and preach

  1762. the gospel

  1763. don't you want

  1764. to have what

  1765. don't you want

  1766. to have what

  1767. happened to

  1768. Philip

  1769. happened to

  1770. you

  1771. yes there

  1772. are requirements

  1773. and they are

  1774. tough at the

  1775. end of chapter

  1776. seven and

  1777. beginning of

  1778. chapter eight

  1779. but you can

  1780. just see

  1781. Philip's heart

  1782. he's like

  1783. oh that

  1784. was cool

  1785. but I've

  1786. got something

  1787. even more

  1788. important

  1789. I want to

  1790. continue to

  1791. preach the

  1792. good news

  1793. of the

  1794. kingdom of

  1795. God and

  1796. Jesus Christ

  1797. and he just

  1798. continues

  1799. I love that

  1800. heart

  1801. whether he had

  1802. a successful

  1803. ministry in

  1804. Jerusalem or

  1805. whether he had

  1806. one in Samaria

  1807. he was willing to

  1808. go to the desert

  1809. and as soon as

  1810. that was finished

  1811. he continued on

  1812. his way

  1813. because he knew

  1814. that there was

  1815. something much

  1816. bigger than all

  1817. of those places

  1818. I pray that

  1819. we would be

  1820. sensitive to the

  1821. spirit in the

  1822. same way

  1823. I'm going to

  1824. ask you just

  1825. to bow your

  1826. heads and

  1827. close your

  1828. eyes and

  1829. just to

  1830. spend a

  1831. moment now

  1832. just to

  1833. ask

  1834. in a bit

  1835. we're going

  1836. to take

  1837. communion but

  1838. before then

  1839. I believe

  1840. there are

  1841. Philips in

  1842. this room

  1843. right now

  1844. I believe

  1845. there are

  1846. people who

  1847. God is

  1848. calling

  1849. and saying

  1850. just go to

  1851. the desert

  1852. place

  1853. go to

  1854. Samaria

  1855. and open

  1856. your mouth

  1857. you don't

  1858. have to be

  1859. clever

  1860. you don't

  1861. have to be

  1862. witty

  1863. just open

  1864. your mouth

  1865. and be

  1866. obedient

  1867. and before

  1868. even any

  1869. music comes

  1870. on

  1871. I want

  1872. you to

  1873. ask this

  1874. question

  1875. Holy Spirit

  1876. who are you

  1877. leading me

  1878. to

  1879. who are you

  1880. placing in

  1881. front of

  1882. me

  1883. who have

  1884. you

  1885. already

  1886. placed in

  1887. front of

  1888. me

  1889. that I

  1890. just need

  1891. to open

  1892. my mouth

  1893. the kingdom

  1894. of God

  1895. spreads through

  1896. people

  1897. one man

  1898. who stopped

  1899. at nothing

  1900. to obey

  1901. his master

  1902. another man

  1903. deeply

  1904. dissatisfied

  1905. with anything

  1906. the world

  1907. could offer

  1908. all pointing

  1909. to the

  1910. one man

  1911. God himself

  1912. the prince

  1913. of heaven

  1914. who knew

  1915. no sin

  1916. allowing himself

  1917. to be casted

  1918. off

  1919. humiliated

  1920. denied

  1921. justice

  1922. so that many

  1923. would receive

  1924. the free

  1925. gift of grace

  1926. through him

  1927. it's our

  1928. job

  1929. it's our

  1930. only job

  1931. to share

  1932. the good

  1933. news of

  1934. Jesus

  1935. if you

  1936. have

  1937. a name

  1938. in your

  1939. mind

  1940. I'm going

  1941. to ask you

  1942. to do

  1943. one thing

  1944. I'm not

  1945. going to

  1946. embarrass you

  1947. I'm not

  1948. going to

  1949. ask you

  1950. I do

  1951. that in

  1952. other

  1953. places

  1954. but not

  1955. here

  1956. I just

  1957. want to

  1958. see a

  1959. little bit

  1960. of commitment

  1961. from you

  1962. if you

  1963. have a

  1964. name

  1965. or God's

  1966. given you

  1967. someone

  1968. can you

  1969. just show

  1970. me that

  1971. you have

  1972. just

  1973. your hand

  1974. can you

  1975. just raise

  1976. it up

  1977. I can

  1978. sense

  1979. there is

  1980. someone

  1981. thank you

  1982. can I

  1983. ask you

  1984. to commit

  1985. to putting

  1986. yourself in

  1987. front of

  1988. that person

  1989. and sharing

  1990. the simple

  1991. gospel

  1992. with them

  1993. and if you

  1994. have trouble

  1995. doing that

  1996. or if

  1997. you're not

  1998. quite sure

  1999. of that

  2000. come and

  2001. speak to

  2002. me

  2003. can you

  2004. commit to

  2005. sharing the

  2006. gospel with

  2007. that person

  2008. you may

  2009. think oh

  2010. it's just one

  2011. conversation

  2012. it's just one

  2013. person

  2014. what can

  2015. that do

  2016. I don't

  2017. know

  2018. I think

  2019. God can

  2020. do anything

  2021. I think

  2022. a whole

  2023. nation

  2024. can be

  2025. saved

  2026. through one

  2027. conversation

  2028. over coffee

  2029. because it's

  2030. not us who

  2031. does it

  2032. it's him

  2033. can you

  2034. commit to

  2035. that person

  2036. we're going

  2037. to have

  2038. communion

  2039. passed around

  2040. now as

  2041. well as

  2042. the ladies

  2043. pass it

  2044. around

  2045. the story

  2046. of the

  2047. Ethiopian

  2048. story of

  2049. Philip

  2050. is a story

  2051. of being

  2052. cast out

  2053. whether

  2054. Philip

  2055. being pushed

  2056. out of

  2057. Jerusalem

  2058. whether

  2059. it's the

  2060. Ethiopian

  2061. being turned

  2062. away

  2063. yet I can

  2064. think of

  2065. no better

  2066. thing to

  2067. do

  2068. as a

  2069. community

  2070. here

  2071. many years

  2072. later

  2073. on the

  2074. other side

  2075. of the

  2076. world

  2077. we commit

  2078. to sharing

  2079. the one

  2080. message that

  2081. Christ shared

  2082. with us

  2083. that all

  2084. are welcomed

  2085. in

  2086. don't get

  2087. me wrong

  2088. the gospel

  2089. is exclusive

  2090. only Jesus

  2091. can only

  2092. Jesus is the

  2093. way but

  2094. is inclusive

  2095. and that it

  2096. is for

  2097. everyone

  2098. we thank you

  2099. that when we

  2100. were dead

  2101. when we

  2102. were separated

  2103. when we

  2104. had no

  2105. hope

  2106. you

  2107. rich in

  2108. mercy

  2109. because of

  2110. the great

  2111. love

  2112. you had

  2113. for us

  2114. the kindness

  2115. the mercy

  2116. that you

  2117. had for us

  2118. that you

  2119. welcomed

  2120. us

  2121. in

  2122. and now

  2123. you

  2124. have made

  2125. your dwelling

  2126. place here

  2127. God

  2128. would you

  2129. continue

  2130. to dwell

  2131. in the

  2132. praises

  2133. of your

  2134. people

  2135. and as we

  2136. scatter

  2137. from here

  2138. would we

  2139. have

  2140. the spirit

  2141. of obedience

  2142. that Philip

  2143. had and we

  2144. have the

  2145. hunger

  2146. that the

  2147. Ethiopian

  2148. Lord we

  2149. commit to

  2150. loving you

  2151. with all

  2152. our hearts

  2153. all our

  2154. mind

  2155. to loving

  2156. our

  2157. neighbours

  2158. as

  2159. ourselves

  2160. and to

  2161. go

  2162. and make

  2163. disciples of

  2164. all nations

  2165. because you

  2166. died and you

  2167. rose again

  2168. and all

  2169. the authority

  2170. in heaven

  2171. and on earth

  2172. has been

  2173. given to

  2174. you

  2175. and so we

  2176. go

  2177. we also

  2178. pray that

  2179. the rain

  2180. would disappear

  2181. before

  2182. volleyball

  2183. thank you

  2184. in your name

  2185. we pray

  2186. amen
