  1. Do you have a particular phrase that really gets on your nerves? A lot of people do. I'll confess, the term that really makes me cringe.

  2. !

  3. Is it so misleading? Because to refer to a born-again Christian suggests that there's such a thing as a Christian that's not born again.

  4. As though there's some particular type of category of Christian that is born again, but most normal Christians aren't.

  5. Jesus is quite clear. He doesn't just call us to believe in God.

  6. To take on a new world view, all those things.

  7. When you follow Jesus, something supernatural happens. The Holy Spirit of God comes to dwell, not simply with you, but in you.

  8. The author of the universe takes up residence in your soul.

  9. You enter into an altogether different, new spiritual realm.

  10. That gives you a completely different relationship with God.

  11. Not somebody that you just believe in, but somebody that you know.

  12. You are given a new identity.

  13. You are in Christ Jesus.

  14. You're a child of God.

  15. As Wesley put it.

  16. I exchanged the faith of a servant for that of a son.

  17. It might happen suddenly.

  18. It might happen gradually.

  19. Theologian Tom Wright said it's a bit like, imagine waking up.

  20. Sometimes you wake up really, really suddenly.

  21. The alarm goes on. Bang.

  22. One moment you're asleep.

  23. One moment you're awake.

  24. But sometimes we might wake up much more gradually, much more slowly.

  25. To the extent that you're not entirely sure exactly when it was that you stopped being asleep and started being awake.

  26. But the point is, there is such a thing as being asleep and there's such a thing as being awake and there's all the difference between those two states.

  27. God wants us to wake up.

  28. God wants us not just to believe something in our heads, but to know him in the depths of our souls.

  29. God wants us to be asleep and there's all the rest of our souls.

  30. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

  31. Not the removal of your mind.

  32. The renewal of your mind.

  33. I've got a jar here.

  34. Apparently, if you catch a flea...

  35. Imagine if you catch a flea and you put it in the jar.

  36. it could easily jump I don't know how many times the height of the jar easily right out of it

  37. but if you can get it in there and get the lid on in time it will still think it can jump out of it

  38. but it won't it doesn't get an escape it gets an awful headache but it will keep on jumping up and

  39. down up and down up and down up and down up and down continually banging against that surface

  40. that's keeping its in that will continue and I don't know how long exactly it takes but it

  41. eventually it realizes it's not a good idea to try and jump out of it because it hurts

  42. so instead it will continue to jump but it will jump just a fraction of a distance shy of the surface

  43. of the lid now I've never tested this but I'm told that if you do that and then you remove the lid

  44. the flea will continue to jump but never out of the jar why because it's become trained and

  45. conditioned to accept its limitations

  46. now hold that image and reverse it

  47. you see when the Holy Spirit renews us it's not like the lid being put on no that that's the life

  48. without the Spirit when the Holy Spirit comes upon us and within us and renews us when we are born again

  49. when we are transformed by the renewal of the mind it's like that lid is lifted

  50. we're free

  51. be transformed

  52. be transformed

  53. says Paul

  54. by the renewal

  55. of your mind

  56. you see the problem is we tend to limit God to the size of our circumstances

  57. and we get trapped by that

  58. to the size of our circumstances

  59. to the size of our circumstances

  60. a low view of God is the cause of a thousand lesser evils

  61. but a high view of God is the solution to ten thousand problems

  62. when the Spirit renews

  63. everything changes

  64. let's just unpack this in a little bit more

  65. detail and think of

  66. you know as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13

  67. that he talks about you know faith hope and love

  68. let's just think about how

  69. the Spirit

  70. renews those three things in us

  71. firstly we've got faith

  72. everyone has faith

  73. again another phrase that I don't like

  74. those with of all faiths and none

  75. it's nonsense because it suggests that there's somebody walking around somewhere out there

  76. who hasn't got any faith

  77. nonsense

  78. everybody has faith

  79. might not realise it

  80. it might not be faith in God

  81. but it'd be faith in something

  82. one of the biggest deceptions is that

  83. that somehow

  84. you know you don't have faith if you

  85. don't believe in God

  86. it's nonsense

  87. it takes far more faith to be an atheist than it does to become

  88. to be a Christian I think in some ways

  89. so

  90. if it's not God that we believe in

  91. if it's not God that we trust in

  92. if it's not God that we have faith in

  93. you can guarantee that faith will be placed somewhere

  94. because it is part of our being

  95. as a human

  96. to have faith

  97. if you think about it

  98. life

  99. every day requires faith

  100. we put our faith in all sorts of things

  101. most of the time we're not even aware that we're doing it

  102. but we do

  103. faith runs right through the fabric of life

  104. right through existence

  105. when the Holy Spirit renews

  106. it takes that faith which is part of our humanity

  107. humanity

  108. and transforms it into something

  109. that is supernatural

  110. transforms it into

  111. that faith that is in God

  112. to a new state of being

  113. it's not often I'll

  114. you'll find me quoting Wesley twice in

  115. on the same day

  116. but I just happened to come across this story this last week

  117. and I thought it's worth sharing

  118. and apparently

  119. he was

  120. outside one day

  121. and met a man who was

  122. really really anxious

  123. riddled with fear

  124. and apparently Wesley pointed at a cow

  125. grazing in the field

  126. that was by a wall

  127. and the cow just happened to be looking over the wall

  128. and apparently John Wesley said to this man

  129. you see that cow over there

  130. is it trying to look through the wall

  131. or is it looking over it

  132. he said well

  133. it's looking over the top of the wall

  134. you can't

  135. see through a wall

  136. cows can't see through walls

  137. we can't see through walls

  138. apparently John Wesley said

  139. that's what you need to do with your fear

  140. stop staring at that wall of fear

  141. stop trying to look through it

  142. you need to look over it

  143. you need that

  144. bigger picture

  145. look over the wall

  146. look over the fear

  147. and put your faith in God

  148. the Holy Spirit

  149. renews

  150. our faith

  151. into something

  152. radically different

  153. the Holy Spirit

  154. also renews our hope

  155. again we put hope

  156. in all sorts of things

  157. every day

  158. of our lives

  159. but hope actually enables us

  160. real hope enables us

  161. to endure

  162. in fact

  163. it

  164. describes in 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  165. chapter 1

  166. endurance inspired by hope

  167. years ago

  168. there was

  169. an experiment

  170. in a laboratory

  171. where psychologists

  172. were trying to explore

  173. what hope is

  174. how it functions

  175. how it operates

  176. and they took a group

  177. of rats

  178. and they put the rats

  179. into a tub of water

  180. and timed how long

  181. it took them to drown

  182. then they took a second

  183. batch of rats

  184. and then they

  185. they put them

  186. in exactly the same conditions

  187. in the water

  188. timed them until

  189. they were just about

  190. to drown again

  191. it was almost exactly

  192. the same length

  193. of time

  194. but a few seconds

  195. short of their drowning

  196. they scooped them

  197. out of the water

  198. and let them recover

  199. put them back

  200. in the water

  201. did the same thing

  202. again

  203. waited till they were

  204. about to drown

  205. and then scooped

  206. them out

  207. and as they repeated

  208. this process

  209. each time

  210. they saw

  211. that the rats

  212. could actually survive

  213. a little bit longer

  214. a little bit longer

  215. a little bit longer

  216. until it was

  217. a long time longer

  218. what was the difference

  219. between the first

  220. group of rats

  221. and the second

  222. the second

  223. discovered hope

  224. and so they could

  225. endure

  226. when the Holy Spirit

  227. comes upon us

  228. and renews our minds

  229. we can endure

  230. because we know

  231. that hand of salvation

  232. is there

  233. but Paul talks about

  234. faith

  235. hope

  236. and love

  237. again

  238. something fundamental

  239. to what it is

  240. to be human

  241. we love

  242. but we love

  243. in all sorts

  244. of different ways

  245. but

  246. the Bible tells us

  247. that God is love

  248. not God has love

  249. but God is love

  250. but God is love

  251. that's what we read

  252. in 1 John 4 16

  253. not just that God

  254. is the source of love

  255. although he is

  256. not just that he has love

  257. but he is

  258. not just that he gives us love

  259. but he is

  260. but God is love

  261. now

  262. the danger is

  263. and this is something

  264. that often we come across

  265. is that people will reverse that

  266. and say well that

  267. love is God

  268. God is not to be defined

  269. by what we think

  270. love is

  271. rather if you want to know

  272. what love is

  273. you find it in God

  274. that's what

  275. agape love

  276. selfless

  277. giving love

  278. is defined

  279. in God himself

  280. but in our human experience

  281. when we

  282. encounter

  283. the reality

  284. of that unconditional love

  285. and it just blows us away

  286. that's that glimpse

  287. of that eternal God

  288. and

  289. notice that

  290. that Paul says

  291. there's faith

  292. there's hope

  293. and there's love

  294. but the greatest of these

  295. is love

  296. why should it be the greatest

  297. well

  298. faith and hope

  299. will eventually

  300. when we encounter God

  301. in eternity

  302. be required no more

  303. in eternity

  304. you won't need faith

  305. in eternity

  306. you won't need

  307. to hope

  308. because in eternity

  309. all there will be

  310. is love

  311. as we have that

  312. eternal

  313. presence of God

  314. with no more suffering

  315. and no more pain

  316. no more having to trust

  317. no more having to have faith

  318. no more need to have hope

  319. because God is there

  320. and everything will be perfect

  321. and it's that

  322. renewal

  323. that is the most

  324. foundational thing

  325. that when the Holy Spirit

  326. comes upon us

  327. he renews us

  328. in love

  329. you know

  330. when we're obnoxious

  331. as Christians

  332. and boy

  333. we can be

  334. that's not the Holy Spirit

  335. at work in us

  336. and that's why

  337. it's a lifelong process

  338. right through our time

  339. yes

  340. on earth

  341. yes we can

  342. be confident

  343. that we have been set free

  344. we have been saved

  345. for all eternity

  346. but the Holy Spirit's

  347. work for us

  348. it never stops

  349. it keeps

  350. needing to work in us

  351. to

  352. to bring more love

  353. into our lives

  354. to sweep out

  355. all that is not

  356. of God

  357. all that is not loving

  358. and that's what we need

  359. over

  360. and over

  361. and over

  362. again

  363. my prayer is

  364. that's precisely

  365. what will happen

  366. not just right now

  367. but each and every day

  368. you know this summer

  369. we had a heat wave

  370. and you probably noticed

  371. that a lot of the grass

  372. went very very brown

  373. and dry

  374. I remember out

  375. walking down by the

  376. salt

  377. the salt house

  378. and fields

  379. and looking at that

  380. thinking

  381. that looks like

  382. it's never going to

  383. grow back

  384. then

  385. suddenly

  386. it wasn't so dry

  387. was it

  388. walking down there

  389. early morning

  390. this week

  391. and they were

  392. mowing

  393. the lawn

  394. that was very

  395. very green

  396. and very long

  397. it only takes

  398. just a few days

  399. of rain

  400. and it comes

  401. right back again

  402. and I hold that

  403. as an image

  404. before all of us

  405. an image of what

  406. God longs to do

  407. for each of us

  408. perhaps it may well

  409. be that you've been

  410. a follower of Jesus

  411. for a long long time

  412. and you feel dry

  413. God's Holy Spirit

  414. is there to renew

  415. that love

  416. along with that faith

  417. and that hope in you

  418. maybe you're listening

  419. to this

  420. maybe you're listening

  421. to this online

  422. and you're thinking

  423. to myself

  424. actually

  425. actually I'm not sure

  426. that I do know

  427. what that is

  428. to be born again

  429. but I so much

  430. want that to happen

  431. or simply ask God

  432. I'm going to leave

  433. in a prayer right now

  434. we're going to do

  435. just that

  436. I'm going to ask

  437. the same prayer

  438. for each and every

  439. one of us

  440. that wherever we're at

  441. whether we have

  442. been renewed recently

  443. or whether we sense

  444. actually we never

  445. have been

  446. let's just ask God

  447. to do that

  448. let's do that now

  449. let's pray

  450. Lord thank you

  451. that your desire

  452. is to give us life

  453. life that is

  454. so much richer

  455. and brighter

  456. and bigger

  457. and fuller

  458. and wider

  459. and deeper

  460. and greater

  461. than we've ever

  462. experienced

  463. and can possibly imagine

  464. Lord that's what's

  465. in store for us

  466. in eternity

  467. but right now

  468. we can begin

  469. to get a taste

  470. of it

  471. thank you

  472. Lord that

  473. you came to us

  474. in Jesus

  475. that you've saved us

  476. you've set us free

  477. but you don't

  478. leave us alone

  479. but you pour out

  480. your spirit

  481. that we might be

  482. renewed

  483. Lord would you

  484. renew our minds

  485. would you renew us

  486. in our faith

  487. in our hope

  488. and in our love

  489. Lord it may be

  490. that perhaps

  491. we've never

  492. asked you

  493. to do that before

  494. Lord for those of us

  495. right now

  496. that have never

  497. given our lives

  498. to you

  499. here's a prayer

  500. Lord Jesus

  501. thank you

  502. that you died

  503. for me

  504. thank you

  505. that you are alive

  506. I give my life

  507. to you now

  508. thank you

  509. that I am

  510. your child

  511. thank you

  512. that I may know

  513. that I have been

  514. saved for all eternity

  515. fill me with your

  516. Holy Spirit

  517. that I may follow you

  518. as your servant

  519. Amen

  520. and for those of us

  521. who have been

  522. following Jesus

  523. for some time

  524. but just long

  525. for that sense

  526. of refresh

  527. and renewal

  528. that the brown grass

  529. may become

  530. lush and green

  531. here's a prayer

  532. Lord in our lives

  533. we can become weary

  534. we can become dry

  535. but thank you

  536. that in your words

  537. you tell us

  538. not just to be filled

  539. but to go on

  540. being filled

  541. to be renewed

  542. Holy Spirit

  543. would you renew us

  544. now

  545. and in the time

  546. to come

  547. help us tomorrow

  548. and the next day

  549. and each day

  550. help us to be open

  551. to your renewal

  552. whatever shape

  553. that looks like

  554. Holy Spirit

  555. come and fill us

  556. and renew us

  557. in Jesus name

  558. Amen

  559. Amen
