  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Hope you're well.

  3. And this week has been a season of blessing for you.

  4. ! I know one or two of you have been through some hard times.

  5. !

  6. And Lord, it amazes us that what in the minds of the secular powers was complete failure.

  7. Lord, you transformed into the most amazing opportunity for sinful human beings.

  8. Whilst we were still sinners, Paul wrote to the Romans, Christ died for us.

  9. Lord, we're so grateful that you didn't wait till we were perfect.

  10. But Lord, while we were still sinners, you provided us with a cure for the consequences of our sin.

  11. And Lord, we thank you that you've not left us alone to struggle in the Christian life.

  12. But as this series of sermons has reminded us, Lord, you've sent your Spirit upon your church.

  13. Lord, to uphold us and to strengthen us.

  14. And today, Lord, we think about how you empower us.

  15. And we thank you in Jesus' name. Amen.

  16. So, I was reading an article in the Harvard Business Review.

  17. And empowerment has become a buzzword of much of kind of business culture in the Western world.

  18. It's a word that's frequently used in management seminars and in leadership seminars.

  19. It's used by identitarian groups, people who primarily identify themselves by their gender or by their sexuality, whatever,

  20. who love to talk about being empowered in this world.

  21. And one of the sentences that really gripped my attention in this was,

  22. the writer of this article wrote,

  23. much of the talk of empowerment today is illusory.

  24. It's promised by people who really cannot empower you,

  25. and yet promise you the earth through empowerment.

  26. I'm minded of Michelle Obama, a wonderful woman in many, many ways,

  27. and some of you will have read her best-selling book, sold 14 million copies, called Becoming.

  28. In that book, beautifully written book, she charts her history from South Chicago.

  29. South Chicago, South Chicago, is the only place on planet Earth where I pass the end of a road.

  30. There's a roadside saying,

  31. if you are not a resident, it would not be wise to enter this street.

  32. It's a rough place.

  33. And she came from there, got herself a place in, I think it was Princeton University,

  34. and then she went on to do postgraduate at Harvard.

  35. I mean, this is the cream of American education that she managed to get herself to from her very humble beginnings.

  36. I mean, as a story of hope, it really is unbeatable.

  37. Then she came to this country, and quite a lot in the States,

  38. and went around giving lectures on empowerment.

  39. This was particularly aimed at young women and girls.

  40. And in those lectures, I mean, this is just my opinion, you don't have to agree with it,

  41. but in those lectures, she rather painted people as victims,

  42. and then encouraged them by saying, you can be what you want to be.

  43. Now, you might say, well, she has some authority for saying that,

  44. given her upbringing and the outcomes in her life.

  45. I mean, she became the first lady of the most powerful nation in the world,

  46. and I think worked very well in that role.

  47. But basically, empowerment is very simple.

  48. It means giving the authority and the power to somebody to do something,

  49. to achieve something.

  50. So I was in the Marriott Hotel in Chicago at one time.

  51. I used to attend a conference there every year.

  52. And I got there, and I sort of, you know, I mean, this is not particularly humble, let me say,

  53. but I kind of saw myself as a regular in this hotel.

  54. So they gave me a room.

  55. I went into my room, just flown halfway across the world, lay on the bed,

  56. and I could hear a noise like Concorde landing.

  57. So I tracked the genesis of this loud noise.

  58. It was the ice machine, which was right outside my door.

  59. So I shot down to the desk, and there's a young woman there.

  60. I said to her, I can't stay in their room.

  61. It's too noisy.

  62. She goes, well, we don't have many rooms left, sir, you know, available at your grade.

  63. I would have put down.

  64. So I said to her, please, can you not help me?

  65. She goes, out comes a key.

  66. I go, and she's given me a suite.

  67. And I thought to myself, this is amazing.

  68. So I went to see the manager that handles group travel in the hotel,

  69. and I told him what she'd done.

  70. He said, yeah, he said, every week we talk to our staff about empowerment.

  71. He said, we give them the authority to make decisions

  72. that will best help our customers have a good experience when they stay here,

  73. and there are no questions asked.

  74. I said, if I'd known that, I would have asked for the presidential suite.

  75. So just by way of introduction, this word empowerment,

  76. and thank God we have the Holy Spirit,

  77. is about being given the authority.

  78. Matthew 28, Jesus said, all authority's been given to me.

  79. And then what he does is he shares some of that authority

  80. by saying, you will continue my work here on the planet.

  81. Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations.

  82. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

  83. God has given us authority.

  84. And God has given us power.

  85. The power of the Holy Spirit.

  86. You think about it.

  87. That early church were locked away, 120 of them,

  88. barely a decent congregation,

  89. locked away in a room somewhere in Jerusalem,

  90. told to wait.

  91. They were fearful.

  92. And then, on that blessed day, the day of Pentecost,

  93. the Holy Spirit fell upon them.

  94. And they went from being frightened disciples

  95. to being fearless disciples,

  96. many of whom were prepared to lose their lives

  97. for the sake of Christ and his church, his congregation.

  98. So my first point is this, you know,

  99. let's understand what empowerment is

  100. and let's understand that the Holy Spirit

  101. has empowered all of us.

  102. The second thing I want to say to you is,

  103. there's a great danger.

  104. I mean, I love reading the Acts of the Apostles.

  105. I love reading that kind of narrative account

  106. of what went on in the early church.

  107. And I think there is a small danger

  108. in the church today

  109. that we kind of glorify the early church

  110. as if it was a problem-free zone

  111. as compared to today

  112. when we seem to have endless problems,

  113. many of them created by ourselves.

  114. And the glorification of the church,

  115. the idea that somehow they had no problem

  116. but we've got plenty,

  117. is not actually backed up by the text, is it?

  118. In Acts chapter 6, very early on,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  119. very early on,

  120. I mean, maybe within two years

  121. of Jesus ascending into heaven,

  122. what do we read?

  123. We read that there was a horrific danger

  124. of a massive ethnic divide in the church.

  125. The Greek-speaking widows

  126. felt that they were not getting their share

  127. of the daily collection,

  128. which was called the daily distribution.

  129. Interestingly,

  130. the early church was more interested

  131. in collecting money

  132. to share with people

  133. who had very little.

  134. Then many of our churches think today

  135. with their grand buildings

  136. to maintain and all that stuff.

  137. In the early church,

  138. it was a bit different.

  139. But here is a potential ethnic divide

  140. that could have split the church

  141. down the middle

  142. from almost day one.

  143. Could have wrecked it.

  144. So the disciples come up with a plan.

  145. They look,

  146. this is, you know,

  147. this is standard operational duty

  148. that we need to deal with.

  149. So they chose,

  150. that we're told they chose six men.

  151. Here's my text.

  152. They chose Stephen,

  153. a man full of faith

  154. and full of the Holy Spirit.

  155. They didn't send him off

  156. to some selection conference

  157. for two days

  158. to meet with people

  159. they never met in their lives

  160. who would pass an opinion

  161. as to whether he was called

  162. to leadership.

  163. No.

  164. They had one

  165. and one criterion only.

  166. This was a man

  167. full of faith

  168. and full of the Holy Spirit.

  169. And I want you to notice

  170. something really profound.

  171. That this man

  172. had a remarkable life.

  173. A remarkable life.

  174. It says

  175. that he performed

  176. many signs and wonders.

  177. But note this,

  178. the man who started his ministry

  179. full of faith

  180. and full of the Holy Spirit.

  181. at the end of his ministry

  182. when the crowd around him

  183. picked up rocks

  184. to lob at his head

  185. it said Stephen

  186. full of the Spirit

  187. prayed for them.

  188. Anybody in the house

  189. think that

  190. that kind of model

  191. is something

  192. that we should be aiming for

  193. but I don't know about you.

  194. My problem is

  195. God has filled me

  196. with the Holy Spirit

  197. but damn it,

  198. I leak.

  199. I need constant

  200. replenishing.

  201. And I think

  202. I may not be

  203. the only person

  204. in the house

  205. who needs that.

  206. So I want to

  207. talk to you

  208. about Stephen,

  209. this man

  210. who is such a model

  211. of spirit-filled existence.

  212. And I want to say

  213. three things about that.

  214. actually,

  215. these are not things

  216. that kind of fit

  217. into the sexy model

  218. of ministry.

  219. These are what I would call

  220. the hard yards

  221. of fullness

  222. of the Holy Spirit.

  223. You see,

  224. I think if there's a danger

  225. that we glorify

  226. the early church

  227. by pretending

  228. it had no problems,

  229. there is a kind of

  230. added

  231. attraction for us.

  232. fullness.

  233. And that is

  234. we're interested

  235. in the kind of

  236. fullness

  237. of the Spirit

  238. that leads to

  239. what you might call

  240. the more exuberant

  241. gifts of the Spirit.

  242. So,

  243. three things.

  244. The first thing

  245. about Stephen

  246. is this.

  247. He shows us

  248. that fullness

  249. serves.

  250. fullness

  251. serves.

  252. At the beginning

  253. of his ministry,

  254. this man

  255. showed

  256. his willingness

  257. to serve

  258. by giving

  259. the most mundane

  260. job in the church

  261. of counting

  262. the collection

  263. and distributing it.

  264. Apologies

  265. to the treasurer.

  266. Given

  267. the most mundane

  268. job

  269. and showed

  270. a willingness

  271. to serve

  272. before he

  273. showed

  274. a willingness

  275. to undertake

  276. the ministry

  277. that God

  278. had given

  279. him.

  280. And by the way,

  281. if you think

  282. that being

  283. filled with

  284. the Holy Spirit

  285. means that you

  286. will have

  287. a happy ending,

  288. just remember,

  289. Stephen's

  290. unbelievable

  291. ministry

  292. ended in

  293. his death.

  294. Terrible,

  295. violent,

  296. brutal

  297. death.

  298. fullness

  299. serves.

  300. Jesus said

  301. in Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  302. chapter 10

  303. and verse

  304. 45,

  305. the Son of

  306. Man came

  307. not to be

  308. served,

  309. but to serve

  310. and to give

  311. his life

  312. as a ransom

  313. for many.

  314. You

  315. are

  316. bought,

  317. if you are

  318. a Christian,

  319. bought by the

  320. blood of Jesus

  321. Christ on the

  322. cross of Calvary.

  323. Nothing you did

  324. saved you,

  325. and everything

  326. that God

  327. did save you.

  328. In

  329. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  330. chapter 2,

  331. the great

  332. apostle St.

  333. Paul tells us

  334. that we

  335. should have

  336. the same

  337. attitude of

  338. Christ Jesus,

  339. who never

  340. wanted equality

  341. with God

  342. while he was

  343. on planet

  344. earth,

  345. but became

  346. obedient,

  347. even obedient

  348. unto death.

  349. in chapter

  350. 2 of

  351. the Acts

  352. of the

  353. Apostles,

  354. right at

  355. the end

  356. of the

  357. chapter

  358. there,

  359. we read

  360. something of

  361. the life

  362. of the

  363. early church.

  364. This is

  365. what fullness

  366. serving looks

  367. like.

  368. These people,

  369. we're told,

  370. were prepared

  371. to sell

  372. their possessions

  373. and create

  374. money in

  375. order that

  376. they could

  377. give it to

  378. the people

  379. who had

  380. nothing.

  381. You know,

  382. I was

  383. thinking of

  384. preaching this,

  385. thinking,

  386. what could I

  387. sell so I

  388. could just

  389. say,

  390. I do

  391. this.

  392. But

  393. everything I

  394. thought about

  395. selling,

  396. I decided I

  397. didn't want

  398. to.

  399. Fullness

  400. serves.

  401. Stephen got

  402. that.

  403. And friends,

  404. I don't know how

  405. many people there

  406. are in church

  407. this morning,

  408. but this church

  409. can always use

  410. more volunteers.

  411. Always use

  412. people who,

  413. when God

  414. speaks to them,

  415. say yes

  416. and not

  417. yes but.

  418. I mean,

  419. it is a

  420. challenge in

  421. most churches

  422. to get the

  423. kind of

  424. quotient up

  425. of people who

  426. are prepared to

  427. serve in the

  428. church.

  429. Explained this

  430. to you before,

  431. the 80-20 rule.

  432. 80% of the

  433. people just

  434. sit back and

  435. treat

  436. Christianity as

  437. a spectator

  438. sport.

  439. 20% get

  440. involved.

  441. Incidentally,

  442. apropos Alex and

  443. Neville's message

  444. at the beginning

  445. of the service,

  446. 20% of the

  447. giving in most

  448. churches,

  449. sorry,

  450. 80% of the

  451. giving is

  452. supplied by

  453. 20% of the

  454. people.

  455. I went

  456. around the

  457. diocese I

  458. served telling

  459. people,

  460. if you can

  461. break that

  462. statistic,

  463. you really

  464. start to

  465. make a

  466. difference.

  467. Fullness

  468. serves.

  469. It may not

  470. be sexy to

  471. say that,

  472. but that's a

  473. mark of the

  474. fullness in

  475. the life of

  476. Stephen.

  477. The second

  478. thing is,

  479. fullness

  480. speaks.

  481. you remember

  482. there were

  483. these people

  484. from the

  485. synagogue of

  486. the freed

  487. men.

  488. I mean,

  489. they sound

  490. like they

  491. were deep

  492. in bondage

  493. when you

  494. read about

  495. what they

  496. think.

  497. But these

  498. people started

  499. accusing

  500. Stephen.

  501. But,

  502. the scripture

  503. says they

  504. could not

  505. stand against

  506. the wisdom

  507. with which

  508. he spoke.

  509. I think

  510. every preacher

  511. secretly hopes

  512. that.

  513. but Stephen

  514. had it in

  515. spades.

  516. Fullness

  517. speaks.

  518. You remember

  519. in Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  520. chapter 4

  521. that there

  522. was another

  523. terrible crisis

  524. for the church

  525. while we're

  526. on the subject

  527. of the problems

  528. of the early

  529. church.

  530. And the

  531. problem was

  532. the Sanhedrin,

  533. the council

  534. of the top

  535. theologians

  536. in Jerusalem,

  537. sent to

  538. Peter,

  539. you are

  540. not to

  541. speak any

  542. longer in

  543. the name

  544. of Jesus

  545. Christ.

  546. I mean,

  547. imagine

  548. if the

  549. disciples,

  550. the apostles

  551. had taken

  552. any notice

  553. of that.

  554. You imagine

  555. it because

  556. we wouldn't

  557. be sitting

  558. here this

  559. morning.

  560. I reckon

  561. if they

  562. stopped

  563. preaching in

  564. the name

  565. of Jesus

  566. Christ,

  567. then what

  568. would have

  569. happened would

  570. be that

  571. Christianity

  572. would have

  573. died the

  574. death of a

  575. kind of

  576. weird sect

  577. of Judaism

  578. in the

  579. temple courts.

  580. I don't

  581. think,

  582. I don't

  583. think

  584. that we

  585. would have

  586. survived

  587. that.

  588. And what

  589. happens?

  590. Peter goes

  591. back,

  592. Peter and

  593. John go

  594. back,

  595. tell the

  596. disciples,

  597. this is

  598. what we've

  599. been told.

  600. They didn't

  601. pitch themselves

  602. as victims

  603. and go

  604. around,

  605. you know,

  606. miserable.

  607. They said

  608. they prayed

  609. together.

  610. And it

  611. says this,

  612. the Holy

  613. Spirit came

  614. upon them.

  615. And at

  616. the end

  617. of the

  618. prayer

  619. meeting,

  620. the building

  621. shook.

  622. You know,

  623. I know

  624. that architects

  625. get jumpy

  626. about this

  627. and health

  628. and safety

  629. people,

  630. but the

  631. bottom line

  632. is I

  633. long for

  634. the church

  635. to be

  636. shaken

  637. today,

  638. shaken

  639. by the

  640. Holy Spirit.

  641. Am I

  642. on my

  643. own?

  644. Someone

  645. say no.

  646. Oh my

  647. goodness,

  648. hey.

  649. Listen

  650. to me.

  651. What does

  652. it say

  653. then?

  654. All of

  655. them,

  656. not just

  657. the apostles,

  658. all of

  659. them went

  660. out and

  661. spoke the

  662. word of

  663. God boldly.

  664. Let me

  665. ask you

  666. something,

  667. friend.

  668. When was

  669. the last

  670. time you

  671. spoke about

  672. God boldly

  673. when you

  674. weren't in

  675. church?

  676. I mean,

  677. for some

  678. of you,

  679. a Christian

  680. might be,

  681. when did

  682. you speak

  683. of him

  684. boldly

  685. when you

  686. were in

  687. church?

  688. Foolness

  689. speaks.

  690. And

  691. Stephen

  692. shows us

  693. what that

  694. looks like.

  695. You're

  696. saying,

  697. well,

  698. I'd love

  699. to speak

  700. more,

  701. but I'm

  702. scared that

  703. somebody might

  704. ask me a

  705. question that

  706. I couldn't

  707. answer.

  708. You know

  709. what the

  710. Bible says?

  711. In a

  712. situation where

  713. you're under

  714. pressure,

  715. who will

  716. give you the

  717. words to

  718. say?

  719. The Holy

  720. Spirit.

  721. If you

  722. step out,

  723. you'll be

  724. surprised how

  725. God will

  726. use even

  727. you.

  728. I take

  729. the view

  730. that God

  731. used Balaam's

  732. ass, so

  733. there's hope

  734. for all of

  735. us.

  736. Fullness

  737. serves,

  738. fullness

  739. speaks,

  740. and finally,

  741. fullness

  742. shines.

  743. it's

  744. said that

  745. when

  746. Stephen was

  747. defending the

  748. faith to

  749. these people

  750. in the

  751. synagogue of

  752. the freedmen,

  753. his face

  754. shone like

  755. that of

  756. an angel.

  757. You don't

  758. see much of

  759. that in

  760. today's

  761. church,

  762. do you?

  763. I have

  764. seen it.

  765. I was

  766. freshly

  767. converted,

  768. probably only

  769. been converted

  770. about a

  771. month,

  772. when the

  773. man who

  774. was about

  775. to be

  776. my best

  777. man,

  778. took me

  779. to Rome.

  780. It was

  781. his birthday

  782. present,

  783. and he

  784. asked his

  785. mum and

  786. dad,

  787. can Mike

  788. and I

  789. go to

  790. Rome and

  791. go to

  792. the

  793. Focolare

  794. movement

  795. conference?

  796. I had

  797. never heard

  798. of the

  799. Focolare

  800. movement.

  801. I asked

  802. him,

  803. what is

  804. the

  805. Focolare

  806. movement?

  807. He said,

  808. it's a

  809. Roman Catholic

  810. renewal

  811. movement.

  812. I didn't

  813. know what

  814. Roman Catholics

  815. were,

  816. and I didn't

  817. know what

  818. a renewal

  819. movement

  820. was,

  821. but I

  822. liked him,

  823. and so

  824. we went.

  825. It was

  826. amazing,

  827. and the

  828. Focolare

  829. movement

  830. was headed

  831. up by

  832. this amazing

  833. woman called

  834. Chiara

  835. Lubert,

  836. and I

  837. swear,

  838. when she

  839. spoke

  840. to the

  841. attendees

  842. at this

  843. conference,

  844. we had to

  845. listen by

  846. simultaneous

  847. translation,

  848. because I

  849. don't

  850. understand

  851. too much

  852. Italian.

  853. Well,

  854. she spoke.

  855. I swear

  856. her face

  857. shone like

  858. that of

  859. an angel,

  860. and then

  861. I got a

  862. message,

  863. she didn't

  864. ask me

  865. direct,

  866. I got a

  867. message

  868. saying,

  869. would you

  870. mind giving

  871. your testimony

  872. to like

  873. 4,000 people?

  874. I mean,

  875. I've been

  876. converted

  877. about a

  878. month,

  879. stood up

  880. there,

  881. my knees

  882. were knocking,

  883. I was frightened

  884. I might vomit

  885. or faint,

  886. and I

  887. told how

  888. God had

  889. broken into

  890. my life

  891. a moron

  892. and saved

  893. me from

  894. the consequences

  895. of my

  896. wrongdoing

  897. and set

  898. me on a

  899. new course

  900. in life.

  901. She then

  902. sent me

  903. a message

  904. saying,

  905. and would

  906. you like

  907. to meet

  908. the Pope?

  909. I didn't

  910. seem

  911. gracious

  912. to say,

  913. well,

  914. I'm not

  915. keen,

  916. you know.

  917. So I

  918. did go

  919. and it

  920. turned out

  921. it was

  922. what they

  923. call

  924. something,

  925. a minor

  926. audience

  927. or something

  928. like that.

  929. So there

  930. were about

  931. a dozen

  932. of us,

  933. young people

  934. from the,

  935. and we

  936. met with

  937. the Holy

  938. Father

  939. and he

  940. blessed us

  941. in Latin

  942. and we

  943. all went

  944. home.

  945. Stephen's

  946. face,

  947. shone

  948. like that

  949. of an

  950. angel.

  951. And the

  952. one thing

  953. that you

  954. see in

  955. that narrative

  956. about Stephen

  957. is there

  958. was something

  959. different about

  960. this guy.

  961. Wasn't

  962. anything special

  963. about him,

  964. I don't think,

  965. but there

  966. was something

  967. amazing about

  968. him.

  969. He lived

  970. in Christ

  971. the most

  972. amazing life.

  973. He did

  974. signs and

  975. he did

  976. wonders.

  977. He defended

  978. the faith

  979. against

  980. hostile

  981. people

  982. from the

  983. synagogue

  984. of the

  985. freedmen.

  986. He gave

  987. it all

  988. he got

  989. and in

  990. the end

  991. he gave

  992. his life.

  993. You know,

  994. your heart

  995. stops when

  996. you think

  997. about that.

  998. He gave

  999. his life.

  1000. I remember

  1001. during the

  1002. Vietnam War

  1003. there was

  1004. one of those

  1005. big demonstrations

  1006. at one of the

  1007. universities

  1008. out there

  1009. and

  1010. somebody

  1011. had a

  1012. placard

  1013. and the

  1014. placard

  1015. said

  1016. war

  1017. isn't

  1018. worth

  1019. dying

  1020. for.

  1021. And I

  1022. think in

  1023. general

  1024. many of

  1025. us

  1026. would agree

  1027. with that.

  1028. But Charles

  1029. Colson saw

  1030. that placard.

  1031. Charles

  1032. Colson who

  1033. got put in

  1034. prison over

  1035. the Watergate

  1036. thing and

  1037. then became

  1038. a Christian

  1039. in prison

  1040. wrote the

  1041. most

  1042. marvelous

  1043. books

  1044. before he

  1045. died

  1046. obviously.

  1047. And Charles

  1048. Colson saw

  1049. that placard

  1050. and he

  1051. wrote this

  1052. book.

  1053. What is

  1054. worth dying

  1055. for today?

  1056. See,

  1057. I ask you

  1058. that question.

  1059. What do

  1060. you think

  1061. is worth

  1062. dying for

  1063. today?

  1064. I mean

  1065. maybe you

  1066. have some

  1067. cause that

  1068. I don't

  1069. know about

  1070. that you

  1071. think,

  1072. you know,

  1073. I'd be

  1074. prepared to

  1075. go and

  1076. get killed

  1077. for this

  1078. but Stephen

  1079. got killed

  1080. for no

  1081. other reason

  1082. than he

  1083. was a

  1084. brilliant

  1085. disciple

  1086. of Jesus

  1087. Christ.

  1088. And he

  1089. didn't just

  1090. die.

  1091. He wasn't

  1092. lying in a

  1093. bed with

  1094. tubes coming

  1095. out of

  1096. every orifice

  1097. deeply

  1098. sedated.

  1099. He was

  1100. alive.

  1101. And they

  1102. threw rocks

  1103. at him and

  1104. they killed

  1105. him.

  1106. not

  1107. knowing

  1108. that in

  1109. Stephen's

  1110. death there

  1111. would be

  1112. a resurrection

  1113. and Stephen

  1114. would be

  1115. even more

  1116. alive than

  1117. he was

  1118. on earth

  1119. in heaven.

  1120. I've

  1121. talked to

  1122. you

  1123. about the

  1124. hard yards

  1125. of the

  1126. fullness

  1127. of the

  1128. Spirit.

  1129. See,

  1130. I think a

  1131. servant

  1132. heart

  1133. doesn't

  1134. just

  1135. begin

  1136. when you

  1137. decide to

  1138. volunteer

  1139. for a few

  1140. things.

  1141. I think it

  1142. starts in

  1143. here.

  1144. When you

  1145. realize that

  1146. the Son of

  1147. Man came

  1148. not to be

  1149. served but

  1150. to serve.

  1151. When you

  1152. realize that

  1153. Paul the

  1154. Apostle says

  1155. your attitude

  1156. should be the

  1157. same as

  1158. Christ Jesus.

  1159. Fullness

  1160. speaks.

  1161. Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1162. 1 and verse

  1163. 8 will tell

  1164. you,

  1165. you're a

  1166. witness.

  1167. You might

  1168. not be an

  1169. evangelist,

  1170. you might

  1171. not be a

  1172. budding

  1173. Billy Graham

  1174. or Sarah

  1175. Graham,

  1176. whatever.

  1177. But you've

  1178. got a

  1179. tongue in

  1180. your head

  1181. and hopefully

  1182. a faith in

  1183. your heart

  1184. and a

  1185. spirit

  1186. that's

  1187. giving you

  1188. the opportunity

  1189. day by

  1190. day to

  1191. say

  1192. something.

  1193. I

  1194. hesitate

  1195. to say

  1196. this but

  1197. I think

  1198. there are

  1199. some of

  1200. us who

  1201. have had a

  1202. kind of

  1203. self-awareness

  1204. bypass and

  1205. when it comes

  1206. to witness

  1207. it's very

  1208. unnatural.

  1209. We somehow

  1210. try and force

  1211. it into a

  1212. conversation and

  1213. it feels

  1214. not quite

  1215. right.

  1216. I'm not

  1217. talking about

  1218. that.

  1219. I'm not

  1220. talking about

  1221. Christians who

  1222. have Bibles the

  1223. size of a

  1224. paving slab who

  1225. are going to

  1226. beat you around

  1227. the head with

  1228. it until you

  1229. submit.

  1230. I'm talking

  1231. about you.

  1232. I'm talking

  1233. about you

  1234. waking up

  1235. every day and

  1236. praying to

  1237. God, how

  1238. can I serve

  1239. you today?

  1240. I'm talking

  1241. about you

  1242. waking up and

  1243. saying to

  1244. God, how

  1245. can I speak

  1246. for you

  1247. today?

  1248. And

  1249. fullness

  1250. shines.

  1251. I often

  1252. wonder,

  1253. myself,

  1254. never mind

  1255. anybody else,

  1256. but what

  1257. would happen

  1258. if a

  1259. Martian

  1260. landed on

  1261. planet Earth

  1262. and looked

  1263. at those of

  1264. us who

  1265. attend church

  1266. on a Sunday?

  1267. How different

  1268. would we look

  1269. than the rest

  1270. of the world?

  1271. How different?

  1272. My friend

  1273. Graham Tomlin

  1274. wrote his

  1275. book, The

  1276. Provocative

  1277. Church, and

  1278. one of the

  1279. things he was

  1280. keen to stress

  1281. in that was

  1282. that our

  1283. very lives

  1284. should be

  1285. provocative.

  1286. They should

  1287. leave others

  1288. with questions

  1289. about why

  1290. is Harry

  1291. like that?

  1292. Why is

  1293. Mary like

  1294. that?

  1295. And that

  1296. would give

  1297. us the

  1298. opportunity

  1299. to say

  1300. something.

  1301. I love

  1302. Stephen,

  1303. and when

  1304. I get

  1305. to heaven,

  1306. I'm going

  1307. to look

  1308. up his

  1309. postcode,

  1310. and I'm

  1311. going to

  1312. go around

  1313. and visit

  1314. with him,

  1315. and I'm

  1316. going to

  1317. say,

  1318. well done,

  1319. because you

  1320. taught me

  1321. something that

  1322. I needed

  1323. to learn.

  1324. You taught

  1325. me something

  1326. I wasn't

  1327. even desperate

  1328. to learn.

  1329. but you

  1330. taught it

  1331. to me,

  1332. and I

  1333. noticed

  1334. that the

  1335. life you

  1336. had

  1337. meant that

  1338. you started

  1339. your ministry

  1340. in the

  1341. fullness of

  1342. the Spirit,

  1343. and you

  1344. ended it

  1345. full of the

  1346. Holy Spirit.

  1347. And I want

  1348. to be like

  1349. that.

  1350. And if you

  1351. don't want to

  1352. be like that,

  1353. I suggest you

  1354. go and speak

  1355. to a Christian

  1356. counselor or

  1357. something.

  1358. But if you

  1359. want that,

  1360. if you want

  1361. that level

  1362. of consistency,

  1363. if you want

  1364. to be a

  1365. serving,

  1366. speaking,

  1367. shining

  1368. Christian,

  1369. I'm going

  1370. to pray

  1371. for you

  1372. now.

  1373. Let's

  1374. bow our

  1375. heads.

  1376. I'm going

  1377. to leave a

  1378. few minutes

  1379. quiet,

  1380. and in

  1381. that quiet,

  1382. I'm praying

  1383. that the

  1384. Holy Spirit

  1385. is going

  1386. to whisper

  1387. in your

  1388. ear,

  1389. and if

  1390. he needs

  1391. to,

  1392. he's going

  1393. to shout

  1394. that you

  1395. might decide

  1396. in the light

  1397. of God's

  1398. word,

  1399. what next

  1400. for me?

  1401. God's

  1402. gracious

  1403. father,

  1404. we know

  1405. that you

  1406. have filled

  1407. us with the

  1408. spirit that

  1409. day we gave

  1410. our lives

  1411. to you,

  1412. but Lord,

  1413. we also

  1414. know the

  1415. truth.

  1416. Many of

  1417. us have

  1418. leaked,

  1419. and Lord,

  1420. we're aware

  1421. that living

  1422. on the

  1423. spiritual

  1424. experience

  1425. of

  1426. yesteryear

  1427. can

  1428. sometimes

  1429. not be

  1430. healthy.

  1431. As Isaiah

  1432. put it,

  1433. our

  1434. spiritual

  1435. experience

  1436. fades like

  1437. the leaves

  1438. in winter.

  1439. Lord,

  1440. we don't

  1441. want to

  1442. be faded

  1443. Christians.

  1444. We don't

  1445. want to

  1446. be leaking

  1447. Christians,

  1448. and we

  1449. long to

  1450. pray to

  1451. you now

  1452. that you

  1453. would send

  1454. your Holy

  1455. Spirit upon

  1456. your people

  1457. gathered.

  1458. Lord,

  1459. we pray

  1460. that you

  1461. would shake

  1462. this

  1463. church,

  1464. and Lord,

  1465. that we

  1466. might become

  1467. serving,

  1468. speaking,

  1469. shining

  1470. Christians,

  1471. Lord,

  1472. whose lives

  1473. are earthed

  1474. in your

  1475. word,

  1476. and truly

  1477. empowered by

  1478. your Holy

  1479. Spirit.

  1480. and so,

  1481. Lord,

  1482. we thank

  1483. you for

  1484. Stephen's

  1485. story,

  1486. and we

  1487. pray,

  1488. Lord,

  1489. that it

  1490. might be a

  1491. passion for

  1492. us as

  1493. we seek

  1494. to live

  1495. the

  1496. spiritual

  1497. life that

  1498. you have

  1499. for us.

  1500. Lord,

  1501. we pray

  1502. this now,

  1503. and the

  1504. people who

  1505. agreed said

  1506. together,

  1507. Amen.

  1508. Amen.

  1509. Amen.
