  1. And let's bow our heads and pray together.

  2. Our gracious Father, we thank you so much for your word.

  3. ! And we thank you that your word is truth.

  4. !

  5. Amen.

  6. So, as you've probably gathered, we are in the middle of a teaching, well, towards the end of a teaching series,

  7. about the ministry, life, and work of the Holy Spirit.

  8. And today, we're talking about something which, as I implied earlier, I think has a very kind of contemporary feel for our culture today.

  9. The Spirit liberates. The Spirit sets us free.

  10. And I want, by way of introduction, to make three points in relation to my text, which is just the first two verses.

  11. I wish there were opportunity to give detailed exposition of this whole chapter,

  12. but I appreciate you'd like to get your lunch before five o'clock this afternoon.

  13. But these are the most amazing verses.

  14. They're not immediately easy to understand, but they are verses which are dense with kind of gospel truth.

  15. There is, therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  16. Because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit, that's the Holy Spirit,

  17. who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  18. It's by way of introduction, I want to say something very obvious to you.

  19. And that is, who this promise in particular relates to.

  20. Let me just remind you again, it says,

  21. No condemnation for who?

  22. For those who are in Christ Jesus.

  23. In other words, those who understand and are committed to Jesus' atoning work on the cross of Calvary,

  24. have believed that Jesus has been physically raised from the dead,

  25. and ascends into heaven.

  26. And as we were praying together then,

  27. the Bible tells us that our prayers go to Jesus,

  28. who sits at the right hand of God,

  29. and lives to make intercession for us.

  30. We have that privilege.

  31. But for this morning,

  32. let's just focus on these words about no condemnation.

  33. I imagine

  34. that in every church gathering,

  35. certainly one of this size,

  36. there are people whose lives are lived in the rain shadow

  37. of disappointment,

  38. of guilt,

  39. of regret.

  40. Things we think about where we think,

  41. if I had my time over again,

  42. I would decide differently.

  43. Or even more seriously,

  44. some of you who live with shame and guilt,

  45. because you've not yet discovered

  46. the liberating message

  47. of the cross of Calvary.

  48. The thing about this verse is,

  49. it's almost the gospel in one sentence.

  50. There is now no condemnation.

  51. Paul was talking about

  52. existential condemnation.

  53. That is,

  54. what will happen to us at the end of our lives?

  55. Will God condemn us?

  56. If you have any doubts about that,

  57. then I think you need to come back to the cross.

  58. A little more about that in a moment.

  59. But just know for now,

  60. this promise is for those who are in Christ.

  61. And the good news is,

  62. if you don't feel you're in Christ,

  63. you can do something about that today.

  64. The second thing is,

  65. why is it important?

  66. It's important for what I've already hinted at,

  67. that too many people in churches,

  68. I spent almost 50 years in pastoral ministry,

  69. and time and time again,

  70. people who really should understand

  71. there is no condemnation,

  72. actually live in the rain shadow of it.

  73. Their lives are less than they could be.

  74. And when the preacher gets in the pulpit,

  75. announces his text from John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  76. and says,

  77. in quoting Jesus,

  78. says,

  79. I've come that they may have life,

  80. and have it in all its fullness.

  81. They sit in church,

  82. and just think to themselves,

  83. I wish.

  84. This is important.

  85. On two fronts.

  86. Like a lot of good theology,

  87. it has an extra spin-off.

  88. But this truth is good

  89. on the basis of theology.

  90. It's telling us the truth

  91. of the outcome of those

  92. who respond to the gospel

  93. and give their lives to Jesus.

  94. There is now no condemnation.

  95. It doesn't say,

  96. there is now not much condemnation.

  97. There is now no condemnation.

  98. But it's not just good

  99. on a theological front,

  100. it's good on a psychological front.

  101. For those of you who live

  102. in the light of fear and condemnation,

  103. for those of you who live in the light,

  104. especially in our culture today,

  105. of self-condemnation,

  106. this is surely good news.

  107. Why, even today,

  108. you could be set free

  109. from that dull ache

  110. of worrying

  111. whether or not

  112. you are saved

  113. and saved for eternity.

  114. And finally, by way of introduction,

  115. I just want to say

  116. a little word

  117. about how freedom

  118. is understood

  119. in our culture.

  120. I noted your vigorous conversations

  121. about identity cards.

  122. I mean, a peripheral thing

  123. at one level,

  124. but the kind of thing

  125. that civil liberties people

  126. get very exercised about.

  127. And some of you

  128. get exercised about,

  129. I could tell

  130. by the look on your faces.

  131. But freedom

  132. is quite a slippery idea.

  133. In our culture,

  134. there is a French philosopher

  135. called Jean-Jacques Rousseau

  136. who wrote in the 18th century.

  137. Rousseau was a kind of classic

  138. libertarian.

  139. He believed that

  140. there should be no imposition.

  141. He believed we were all

  142. born free

  143. and no imposition whatsoever

  144. should be put on that

  145. other than one.

  146. And that is,

  147. we're free to do

  148. whatever we want

  149. unless it would harm

  150. somebody else.

  151. I've told you this before,

  152. that is a most fatuous argument.

  153. And the reason

  154. it's a fatuous argument

  155. is you have no idea

  156. what impact your behaviour

  157. will have on another person.

  158. You can't guarantee that.

  159. I know that one area

  160. that's big for

  161. kind of

  162. self-condemnation today

  163. is the whole issue

  164. of parenting.

  165. I don't want to go into that,

  166. but

  167. you know,

  168. you quickly learn

  169. that

  170. your children learn

  171. far more

  172. by your behaviour

  173. than they do

  174. from your threats.

  175. So,

  176. at this end

  177. of one scale,

  178. you've got

  179. Jean-Jacques Rousseau

  180. and then

  181. you've got

  182. a man called

  183. Locke.

  184. And,

  185. sorry,

  186. I don't mean Locke,

  187. I mean Thomas Hobbes.

  188. And Thomas Hobbes

  189. believed that

  190. at the other end

  191. of the scale,

  192. really,

  193. that in order

  194. to live in a

  195. civilised society,

  196. Hobbes would have

  197. agreed with Rousseau

  198. that we're all

  199. born free,

  200. but he said

  201. in order to live

  202. in a civilised society,

  203. we have to submit

  204. some of those

  205. freedoms to the state

  206. in order that

  207. we can live together

  208. civilly.

  209. We can't just

  210. make it up

  211. as we go along.

  212. So,

  213. Rousseau thought

  214. everything was in,

  215. Hobbes had a more

  216. qualified

  217. understanding

  218. of it.

  219. and I guess

  220. that most of us

  221. sit somewhere

  222. between the two.

  223. If you are a

  224. card-carrying

  225. libertarian,

  226. you'll be

  227. near Rousseau

  228. than you will

  229. be Hobbes.

  230. But this stuff

  231. doesn't really

  232. square

  233. with the freedom

  234. that God

  235. offers

  236. in Jesus Christ.

  237. Christ.

  238. The Bible

  239. says,

  240. if the Son

  241. sets you

  242. free,

  243. the Son,

  244. S-O-N,

  245. sets you

  246. free,

  247. you will be

  248. free

  249. indeed.

  250. Psychologists

  251. and theologians

  252. are happy to

  253. speak and write

  254. about our

  255. pathological fear

  256. of condemnation.

  257. those of you

  258. who have been

  259. involved in

  260. counseling ministry

  261. will have been

  262. exposed to the

  263. teaching of

  264. Carl Jung.

  265. And Carl Jung,

  266. I mean,

  267. said a lot of

  268. not very good

  269. things.

  270. But one of the

  271. things he fastened

  272. onto is this.

  273. He talked about

  274. our fear of

  275. moral condemnation.

  276. He thought that

  277. human beings

  278. had what he

  279. called a shadow

  280. side to our

  281. personality,

  282. which lived in

  283. constant fear

  284. of condemnation.

  285. Writing a little

  286. later,

  287. a psychologist

  288. called John

  289. Bradshaw,

  290. quite an

  291. influential

  292. psychologist,

  293. talks about

  294. something he

  295. called toxic

  296. shame.

  297. I don't know

  298. whether you've

  299. ever watched

  300. it,

  301. and I don't

  302. think she's

  303. a person of

  304. faith.

  305. But if you

  306. want to learn

  307. something about

  308. shame,

  309. go and

  310. Google TED,

  311. and then

  312. Google on

  313. the search

  314. site on

  315. the TED

  316. website,

  317. Monica Lewinsky,

  318. who talks

  319. understandably

  320. about shame.

  321. That's what

  322. John Bradshaw

  323. is on about.

  324. he's on about

  325. that kind of

  326. toxic thing

  327. that can

  328. really wreck

  329. your life.

  330. And in a

  331. way, I think

  332. Monica Lewinsky

  333. has moved on

  334. a bit.

  335. I don't know

  336. how she's

  337. managed that,

  338. but she's

  339. moved on a

  340. bit from it.

  341. But again,

  342. some of you

  343. will be living

  344. today with

  345. toxic shame.

  346. Things you've

  347. said or done

  348. that you kind

  349. of can't get

  350. past.

  351. lost.

  352. I was

  353. speaking last

  354. week in the

  355. family church,

  356. and a lady

  357. came up to

  358. me at the

  359. end.

  360. She said,

  361. could I have

  362. your phone

  363. number?

  364. I'm like,

  365. look.

  366. You know,

  367. women don't

  368. normally react

  369. to me like

  370. that.

  371. Here we go,

  372. you know.

  373. I said,

  374. there's any

  375. reason for

  376. this?

  377. She said,

  378. I've done

  379. something in

  380. my life.

  381. She said,

  382. I'm in

  383. church every

  384. Sunday,

  385. but I just

  386. can't get

  387. past it.

  388. And then

  389. she said,

  390. in response

  391. to the

  392. thing I

  393. did,

  394. the church

  395. really just

  396. ignored me.

  397. I can't

  398. get past

  399. that either.

  400. can I

  401. fix up to

  402. have a

  403. conversation

  404. with you?

  405. I said,

  406. yes,

  407. sure you

  408. can do

  409. that,

  410. yeah.

  411. And some

  412. of you I

  413. know,

  414. understandably,

  415. are a fan

  416. of a

  417. well-known

  418. international

  419. speaker now

  420. called

  421. Brené Brown.

  422. And she

  423. talks about

  424. all the

  425. shame

  426. business

  427. and fear

  428. of condemnation.

  429. She talks

  430. about the

  431. fear of

  432. disconnection

  433. and moral

  434. exposure.

  435. In Romans

  436. 8,

  437. Paul tells

  438. us that

  439. in Christ

  440. there is

  441. no

  442. condemnation.

  443. I have

  444. an anxiety

  445. that some

  446. people sit

  447. or lie on

  448. the couches

  449. of psychotherapists

  450. for decades,

  451. trying to

  452. work out,

  453. how am I

  454. going to get

  455. rid of this

  456. baggage that

  457. I'm walking

  458. through life

  459. in?

  460. I think

  461. Jesus

  462. can heal

  463. you in a

  464. moment

  465. of

  466. condemnation

  467. and the

  468. fear of

  469. condemnation.

  470. But it

  471. will take

  472. a work of

  473. the Holy

  474. Spirit

  475. to do

  476. that.

  477. God

  478. is

  479. God.

  480. So the

  481. theologian

  482. Paul Tillich,

  483. he talked

  484. about the

  485. anxiety

  486. of

  487. condemnation.

  488. This is

  489. what he

  490. said,

  491. the anxiety

  492. of condemnation

  493. is the

  494. awareness

  495. of being

  496. unacceptable

  497. before what

  498. he called

  499. the source

  500. of our

  501. being.

  502. I don't

  503. find that

  504. a particularly

  505. helpful way

  506. of describing

  507. God.

  508. But nevertheless,

  509. he's referring

  510. to God.

  511. I wonder

  512. if there's

  513. anyone in

  514. the house

  515. this morning

  516. who just

  517. has this

  518. awareness

  519. of feeling

  520. unacceptable.

  521. I mean,

  522. a lot of

  523. Christians who

  524. feel unacceptable.

  525. In their

  526. head they

  527. believe the

  528. gospel, but

  529. in their

  530. hearts, you

  531. know, just

  532. not quite

  533. sure about

  534. that.

  535. The wonderful

  536. news of the

  537. gospel is

  538. that today

  539. you can

  540. start to

  541. be free.

  542. Not just

  543. from condemnation,

  544. but from the

  545. fear of

  546. condemnation.

  547. And there

  548. is no more

  549. existential

  550. fear than

  551. the fear of

  552. condemnation

  553. of God.

  554. You

  555. imagine,

  556. you

  557. imagine,

  558. you might

  559. walk through,

  560. I think we

  561. blocked that

  562. door, that

  563. door today,

  564. free.

  565. free from

  566. the fear

  567. and the

  568. fact of

  569. self-condemnation.

  570. Wondering

  571. whether you

  572. are acceptable

  573. or not.

  574. Listen,

  575. if you want

  576. to be really

  577. free, you

  578. need to

  579. listen up,

  580. because this

  581. is a really

  582. profound

  583. spiritual truth.

  584. There is now

  585. no condemnation.

  586. I mean,

  587. I think the

  588. spirit frees us

  589. in a lot of

  590. ways, and

  591. maybe they'll

  592. come up in

  593. other weeks,

  594. maybe it

  595. has already,

  596. but you

  597. can be free

  598. of thinking

  599. that you

  600. have to

  601. earn your

  602. salvation.

  603. I

  604. studied for

  605. a brief

  606. time when

  607. I was

  608. studying

  609. what they

  610. call comparative

  611. religion.

  612. It was

  613. based on a

  614. mad idea,

  615. frankly, that

  616. all religions

  617. are equal,

  618. and the fact

  619. that we're

  620. Christians is

  621. kind of

  622. random, and

  623. yeah, just

  624. not good.

  625. And so

  626. one of the

  627. things that

  628. amazed me

  629. about the

  630. other religions

  631. I heard of

  632. is that they

  633. all contain

  634. an element

  635. of trying to

  636. earn their

  637. way into

  638. the presence

  639. of God.

  640. And of

  641. course, that

  642. inevitably, because

  643. we're human

  644. beings, leads

  645. to a kind of

  646. neurosis, and

  647. the neurosis is,

  648. have I done

  649. enough?

  650. Have I done

  651. enough good

  652. in my life to

  653. kind of

  654. obliterate the

  655. stuff that's

  656. not so good?

  657. It goes back

  658. to Tillich,

  659. doesn't it?

  660. Worrying about

  661. our acceptability.

  662. And the

  663. great news of

  664. the gospel is,

  665. you don't have

  666. to earn your

  667. salvation, it's

  668. a gospel of

  669. grace.

  670. Someone say

  671. amen.

  672. It's a gospel

  673. of God's love

  674. shown to you,

  675. even though you

  676. don't deserve

  677. it.

  678. that truth

  679. in itself

  680. would be

  681. enough.

  682. I don't

  683. have to earn

  684. my salvation.

  685. And when it

  686. comes to that

  687. toxic shame

  688. that John

  689. Bradshaw

  690. writes about,

  691. you can be

  692. free forever

  693. from the

  694. acute pain

  695. of shame.

  696. The writer

  697. of the

  698. epistle to

  699. the Hebrews

  700. wrote these

  701. truly

  702. reassuring

  703. words.

  704. He said,

  705. let us draw

  706. near to God

  707. with a sincere

  708. heart and

  709. with full

  710. assurance that

  711. faith brings,

  712. having our

  713. hearts sprinkled

  714. to cleanse us

  715. from a guilty

  716. conscience,

  717. and having our

  718. bodies washed

  719. with pure

  720. water.

  721. let us hold

  722. unswervingly,

  723. he said,

  724. to the hope

  725. we profess,

  726. for he who

  727. promised is

  728. faithful.

  729. God doesn't

  730. promise this

  731. stuff to you

  732. and let you

  733. down.

  734. We've all had

  735. that in our

  736. lives,

  737. haven't we?

  738. People who

  739. promise us

  740. things and

  741. then let us

  742. down.

  743. I've,

  744. you know,

  745. a couple

  746. of times

  747. I really,

  748. you know,

  749. felt let

  750. down.

  751. I remember

  752. when Antti

  753. and I

  754. worked on

  755. the Scargill

  756. community,

  757. which it

  758. was there

  759. to serve

  760. the guests

  761. who came

  762. on house

  763. parties and

  764. who came,

  765. you know,

  766. for conferences

  767. and stuff.

  768. And we

  769. had a

  770. very focused

  771. purpose,

  772. serve the

  773. guests.

  774. If you

  775. have never

  776. heard of

  777. Scargill,

  778. you've

  779. probably

  780. heard of

  781. Lee Abbey,

  782. same kind

  783. of deal.

  784. And

  785. suddenly,

  786. there seemed

  787. to be a

  788. move in

  789. the community.

  790. People

  791. wanted more

  792. time off.

  793. They wanted

  794. not as much

  795. time exposing,

  796. you know,

  797. themselves and

  798. their personalities

  799. to guests.

  800. And I

  801. I smelled

  802. a rat

  803. here.

  804. And I

  805. talked to

  806. several

  807. community

  808. members.

  809. Guess what?

  810. They all

  811. agreed with

  812. me.

  813. We get

  814. to the

  815. vital meeting

  816. of the

  817. community

  818. with the

  819. warden and

  820. the chair.

  821. I spoke

  822. up thinking

  823. I'm going

  824. to be on

  825. safe ground

  826. here.

  827. There were

  828. 40 people

  829. in the room.

  830. Do you

  831. know how

  832. many more

  833. people spoke

  834. up?

  835. Just one

  836. more.

  837. And everybody

  838. thought he was

  839. weird anyway.

  840. Life can

  841. be messy.

  842. People will

  843. let you

  844. down but

  845. you've got

  846. to get

  847. past it.

  848. Here's the

  849. truth.

  850. There is

  851. now no

  852. condemnation

  853. for those

  854. who are

  855. in Christ

  856. Jesus.

  857. But there's

  858. a painful

  859. truth here

  860. which,

  861. you know,

  862. trigger warning,

  863. some of you

  864. won't like

  865. this.

  866. But the

  867. implication is

  868. surely that

  869. if there is

  870. no condemnation

  871. for those

  872. who are in

  873. Christ Jesus,

  874. there might

  875. be some

  876. condemnation

  877. for those

  878. who are

  879. not.

  880. I say

  881. that and

  882. I almost

  883. feel a lump

  884. in my throat

  885. about my

  886. own sister.

  887. who,

  888. when she

  889. was younger,

  890. you know,

  891. went to

  892. church twice

  893. a day,

  894. taught in

  895. a Sunday

  896. school.

  897. I mean,

  898. you could

  899. almost see

  900. the halo

  901. on that

  902. girl.

  903. I was

  904. always the

  905. one in

  906. trouble.

  907. She was

  908. always the

  909. one getting

  910. rewards and

  911. goodness knows

  912. what.

  913. And I

  914. have no

  915. idea what

  916. happened to

  917. her.

  918. I think,

  919. you know,

  920. maybe she

  921. married a

  922. guy who

  923. wasn't a

  924. Christian.

  925. He may

  926. have had

  927. more influence.

  928. But when I

  929. say that,

  930. there may

  931. be some

  932. condemnation

  933. for some.

  934. I don't

  935. like the

  936. thought of

  937. that.

  938. Will some

  939. people be

  940. eternally

  941. condemned?

  942. The concept

  943. of judgment

  944. is avoided

  945. in many

  946. pulpits,

  947. certainly in

  948. the Church

  949. of England

  950. today.

  951. But it's

  952. there in

  953. Scripture.

  954. This is

  955. what Jesus

  956. said.

  957. Enter

  958. through the

  959. narrow gate,

  960. for wide

  961. is the

  962. gate,

  963. and

  964. broad is

  965. the road

  966. that leads

  967. to destruction,

  968. and many

  969. enter through

  970. it.

  971. But small

  972. is the

  973. gate,

  974. and narrow

  975. the road

  976. that leads

  977. to life.

  978. And only

  979. a few

  980. find it.

  981. Here's

  982. some great

  983. news.

  984. You can

  985. join the

  986. few today

  987. with

  988. certainty.

  989. And you

  990. can work

  991. tirelessly

  992. to seek

  993. to help

  994. others

  995. join the

  996. few.

  997. I

  998. wouldn't

  999. dare to

  1000. kind of

  1001. put a

  1002. thermometer,

  1003. a thermometer,

  1004. try and read

  1005. the temperature

  1006. of many

  1007. churches.

  1008. Maybe not

  1009. even this

  1010. church,

  1011. but a lot

  1012. of churches.

  1013. I spent

  1014. 30 years

  1015. in peripatetic

  1016. ministry.

  1017. And if

  1018. you said

  1019. to me,

  1020. give a

  1021. score out

  1022. of 10,

  1023. 10 being

  1024. people are

  1025. really hot

  1026. for the

  1027. gospel and

  1028. seeing lives

  1029. transformed,

  1030. and one

  1031. is,

  1032. business as

  1033. usual,

  1034. I'd have to

  1035. say,

  1036. most

  1037. churches

  1038. full of

  1039. nice

  1040. people,

  1041. they don't

  1042. give squat

  1043. about

  1044. unsaved

  1045. people.

  1046. And then

  1047. they expect

  1048. people like

  1049. me to

  1050. stand up

  1051. at a

  1052. funeral and

  1053. try and

  1054. say stuff

  1055. that implies

  1056. they're going

  1057. to make it

  1058. home.

  1059. I think

  1060. that,

  1061. you know,

  1062. the whole

  1063. business of

  1064. judgment is

  1065. God's

  1066. business.

  1067. and I

  1068. think there

  1069. will be

  1070. some

  1071. surprises

  1072. in heaven.

  1073. But the

  1074. Bible is

  1075. very,

  1076. very clear.

  1077. The

  1078. Bible's

  1079. witness is

  1080. there is

  1081. only one

  1082. way to

  1083. God,

  1084. and that

  1085. is through

  1086. his grace

  1087. and through

  1088. faith in

  1089. Jesus Christ.

  1090. That's the

  1091. only way

  1092. I know.

  1093. And you

  1094. say to me,

  1095. what about

  1096. devout

  1097. Muslims?

  1098. I don't

  1099. know.

  1100. But I

  1101. know one

  1102. way.

  1103. And it's

  1104. working for

  1105. me and

  1106. for many

  1107. of you.

  1108. The

  1109. Spirit

  1110. liberates

  1111. us,

  1112. frees us

  1113. from

  1114. condemnation.

  1115. And it

  1116. frees us

  1117. from

  1118. condemnation

  1119. because it

  1120. liberates us

  1121. from the

  1122. consequences

  1123. of our

  1124. sin.

  1125. But the

  1126. Spirit can

  1127. also

  1128. liberate

  1129. you

  1130. from

  1131. something

  1132. that I

  1133. imagine

  1134. worries

  1135. some of

  1136. you.

  1137. The

  1138. Spirit

  1139. can

  1140. liberate

  1141. you

  1142. from the

  1143. desire

  1144. to sin,

  1145. providing

  1146. you allow

  1147. him.

  1148. At the

  1149. beginning

  1150. of the

  1151. service,

  1152. we quoted

  1153. from 1

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  1154. John

  1155. chapter 1,

  1156. if we

  1157. say we

  1158. have no

  1159. sin,

  1160. what are

  1161. we?

  1162. We're

  1163. deceived.

  1164. But if we

  1165. confess our

  1166. sins,

  1167. God is

  1168. faithful and

  1169. just to

  1170. forgive us

  1171. our sins.

  1172. Amen?

  1173. And then

  1174. one more

  1175. thing.

  1176. And

  1177. cleanse us

  1178. from all

  1179. unrighteousness.

  1180. God

  1181. wants to

  1182. forgive you,

  1183. but he

  1184. wants to

  1185. cleanse you.

  1186. he wants

  1187. to cleanse

  1188. you from

  1189. the very

  1190. desire to

  1191. sin.

  1192. Oh,

  1193. you know,

  1194. Israel had

  1195. the law,

  1196. and if

  1197. people could

  1198. obey the

  1199. law,

  1200. that's Paul's

  1201. point in

  1202. the rest

  1203. of Romans,

  1204. if people

  1205. could keep

  1206. all the

  1207. law,

  1208. they probably

  1209. would look

  1210. fairly righteous,

  1211. but they

  1212. couldn't.

  1213. Paul says

  1214. basically,

  1215. the law

  1216. as understood

  1217. by Israel,

  1218. the Old

  1219. Testament,

  1220. the Old

  1221. Covenant

  1222. people of

  1223. God,

  1224. is like a

  1225. school.

  1226. teacher.

  1227. We learn

  1228. about our

  1229. sin when

  1230. we break

  1231. the law.

  1232. In other

  1233. words,

  1234. the law's

  1235. out there

  1236. trying to

  1237. change me

  1238. from out

  1239. there by

  1240. my

  1241. adherence.

  1242. Whereas

  1243. the Holy

  1244. Spirit is

  1245. trying to

  1246. change you

  1247. from the

  1248. inside out.

  1249. You want

  1250. to be

  1251. forgiven,

  1252. that's a

  1253. great start,

  1254. but you

  1255. want to be

  1256. cleansed.

  1257. trouble with

  1258. sin,

  1259. honestly,

  1260. quite a lot

  1261. of it's

  1262. enjoyable.

  1263. I never

  1264. watched it,

  1265. but somebody

  1266. told me about

  1267. that film,

  1268. The Exorcist,

  1269. which is 40

  1270. years old now.

  1271. Apparently,

  1272. at one point,

  1273. the poor

  1274. little girl

  1275. who's possessed,

  1276. her head's

  1277. whirling around

  1278. at 360

  1279. degrees,

  1280. vomiting green

  1281. bile everywhere.

  1282. I mean,

  1283. if that

  1284. was sin,

  1285. would you

  1286. have a

  1287. problem

  1288. avoiding

  1289. it?

  1290. No.

  1291. It's

  1292. the sinful

  1293. thoughts,

  1294. the sinful

  1295. behaviours.

  1296. And in

  1297. Christ,

  1298. there will

  1299. be no

  1300. condemnation

  1301. because you

  1302. will be

  1303. liberated

  1304. from the

  1305. consequences

  1306. of your

  1307. sin.

  1308. So,

  1309. let me

  1310. end.

  1311. This

  1312. morning,

  1313. God

  1314. doesn't

  1315. want you

  1316. just to

  1317. be free

  1318. of guilt

  1319. and shame.

  1320. He wants

  1321. you to

  1322. know in

  1323. the depth

  1324. of your

  1325. soul that

  1326. you are

  1327. free in

  1328. Christ.

  1329. There is

  1330. now no

  1331. condemnation.

  1332. This

  1333. morning,

  1334. the Spirit

  1335. wants to

  1336. help to

  1337. cleanse you

  1338. from a

  1339. desire to

  1340. sin.

  1341. Those of

  1342. you struggling

  1343. with addiction

  1344. need to

  1345. hear this.

  1346. Those who

  1347. are struggling

  1348. with terrible

  1349. habits need

  1350. to hear

  1351. this.

  1352. He's

  1353. calling you

  1354. to repent

  1355. of your

  1356. habit,

  1357. to repent

  1358. of your

  1359. repeated

  1360. failure to

  1361. come clean

  1362. and seek

  1363. the Spirit's

  1364. help.

  1365. And he

  1366. doesn't want

  1367. you just to

  1368. know freedom

  1369. in your

  1370. head,

  1371. he wants

  1372. you to

  1373. feel freedom

  1374. in your

  1375. heart.

  1376. Can you

  1377. imagine

  1378. that?

  1379. Can you

  1380. imagine

  1381. it's

  1382. possible?

  1383. Two verses

  1384. that could

  1385. change your

  1386. life,

  1387. change your

  1388. mental health,

  1389. change your

  1390. spiritual health.

  1391. Therefore,

  1392. there is now

  1393. no condemnation

  1394. for those who

  1395. are in Christ

  1396. Jesus.

  1397. Because God

  1398. through Christ

  1399. Jesus,

  1400. the law of

  1401. the Spirit

  1402. who gives

  1403. life,

  1404. has set you

  1405. free from

  1406. the law

  1407. of sin

  1408. and death.

  1409. The end

  1410. of this

  1411. service,

  1412. there are

  1413. going to

  1414. be people

  1415. who've been

  1416. trained and

  1417. released to

  1418. pray with

  1419. you.

  1420. If you

  1421. want to

  1422. pray through

  1423. one of

  1424. these issues,

  1425. if you

  1426. truly want

  1427. to be

  1428. free,

  1429. and I

  1430. would

  1431. commend

  1432. you to

  1433. do it.

  1434. Go and

  1435. see one

  1436. of them,

  1437. pray with

  1438. them.

  1439. Why?

  1440. Because

  1441. if you

  1442. don't do

  1443. something

  1444. before you

  1445. leave the

  1446. house this

  1447. morning,

  1448. the likelihood

  1449. is you

  1450. will do

  1451. what?

  1452. Nothing.

  1453. Just go

  1454. home and

  1455. say,

  1456. poor old

  1457. Mike was

  1458. off on

  1459. one this

  1460. morning.

  1461. It's not

  1462. the point.

  1463. I'm trying

  1464. to declare

  1465. to you

  1466. humbly

  1467. and honestly

  1468. the truth

  1469. of Romans

    Romans 8:1

  1470. chapter 8

  1471. verse 1.

  1472. there is

  1473. now no

  1474. condemnation

  1475. for those

  1476. who are

  1477. in Christ

  1478. Jesus.

  1479. Blessed

  1480. are those

  1481. who have

  1482. ears to

  1483. hear,

  1484. and

  1485. blessed

  1486. are those

  1487. who believe

  1488. and are

  1489. saved.

  1490. Let us

  1491. pray.

  1492. Would you

  1493. like to

  1494. stand up?

  1495. spirit can

  1496. set you

  1497. free.

  1498. I'm just

  1499. going to

  1500. suggest

  1501. that in a

  1502. few moments

  1503. of silence,

  1504. as you

  1505. stand there,

  1506. just take

  1507. a few deep

  1508. breaths.

  1509. breaths,

  1510. not too

  1511. many,

  1512. because you

  1513. get dizzy.

  1514. Breathe in,

  1515. and in your

  1516. minds,

  1517. I believe

  1518. you're

  1519. breathing in

  1520. the spirit

  1521. who will

  1522. set you

  1523. free.

  1524. Let's just

  1525. do that,

  1526. let's see

  1527. a few

  1528. moments

  1529. quiet.

1530. Our gracious Father, we're so grateful

1531. that in you, in Jesus,

1532. there is now no condemnation.

  1533. Thank you, Lord.

1534. The Spirit of life, the Holy Spirit,

1535. wants to come to us this morning

1536. for those who have no faith.

1537. The Spirit wants to ignite a spark in you today.

1538. For those of you who would clearly say

1539. that I have faith, but I'm dogged by shame,

  1540. I'm dogged by regret,

  1541. I'm dogged by self-condemnation and fear

1542. that I may not be acceptable to you.

1543. Lord, speak a word of grace into their hearts,

  1544. would you please?

1545. God says, I love you.

1546. Even though you don't deserve it.

1547. And the evidence for that is the cross of Calvary.

1548. On which the Prince of Glory died.

1549. My riches gained I count but lost,

1550. and poor contempt on all my pride.

1551. Lord, please don't let our pride stop us

1552. from facing the truth about ourselves

1553. and doing something about it.

  1554. And Lord, help us,

1555. those of us who struggle with

  1556. addictive behaviors,

  1557. struggle with personalities

1558. that could start a row in an empty house.

  1559. Lord, thank you.

1560. You forgive us from our sin

1561. when we turn to you,

1562. but Lord, please cleanse us.

1563. That our lives might become more like Jesus.

1564. And our church would be different.

1565. And our community would be different.

1566. And our county would be different.

1567. And our nation would be different.

1568. And the world would learn the truth

  1569. that in Jesus,

1570. there is now no condemnation.

  1571. Now, no condemnation.

1572. Lord, hear our prayer, we pray.

  1573. Because we're desperate.

1574. Not just to know that truth in our heads,

1575. but in our hearts as well.

1576. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray.

  1577. The people who agreed,

  1578. joined together and said

1579. in a loud and confident voice,

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.
