  1. Wow, just what you prayed there at the end, that we are filled with joy when we respond

  2. ! As we were worshipping, I was reminded of one of my favourite books. It's called The Boy,

  3. ! The Mole, The Fox, The Horse. If you've heard me talk about it, Queenie's nodding because

  4. it's her favourite book. You've bought 10, 20 copies over the years, at least, I'm sure.

  5. It's just these bite-sized quotes. I'm not a very intellectual person, so I need to read

  6. cartoon pictures with short sentences, and there's one page that says this, one of the

  7. greatest freedoms we have is how we react to things. And as we were singing, I was like,

  8. God, you're so good. I was like, why do you have us sing that song to you, God? Where's

  9. that coming from? Are you kind of self-centred and narcissistic, and you want us to focus on

  10. how good you... And then I realised, wow, when we do that, when we respond to his goodness,

  11. we are just filled with joy. I don't know what you've been going through, and I've been

  12. at a conference this week, a little bit under the weather, but being filled with joy because

  13. I've had friends and colleagues from all around the world, from young life, and that verse,

  14. Hebrews 12, keeps popping up, that song keeps popping up, so turn your eyes to Jesus, and

  15. why? Why does he say look at him and not at anything else? Because he says when you look

  16. at anything else, when you worship anything else, when you focus on anything else, those

  17. things all have the power to consume you, to corrupt you, but if you look at me, I am

  18. the only one who can complete you. And that's what he's saying, and when we focus on him,

  19. I think that's why we gather here, right? That's the first one, that we would know him

  20. and that we would enjoy him, that there would be joy in what we're doing here, and then we

  21. respond out of that joy. And that's really what it's all about, and it's just so great

  22. to see all these faces that I am growing and growing to love, that we get to do live

  23. together. Or just a slight update, I see Hank and Agnes here, so it reminds me to remember.

  24. We have completed signing the agreement on the fifth floor, so that's done. We have got

  25. contractors in giving us quotes, and we've chosen one, so that's done. So now we are putting

  26. in a kind of application to the building to let us start working, and so hopefully in a

  27. month or two or three, we will be able to worship downstairs, which will be great. We'll have

  28. a bit more space than this, and the kids will be able to be released from those rooms of chaos

  29. as well. So that's just a little update. My prayer is that we'll have a wonderful Christmas

  30. service down there at the very latest. That's what I'm hoping. But just know that it is

  31. happening, things are happening behind the scenes. There are lots of WhatsApp groups and lots of

  32. chats that are talking about this. So I just thank you for bearing with us as we pile on top

  33. of each other. But we pile on top of each other, we gather because we're responding to the gospel.

  34. And I hope that's why we're here. Those gathering statements, we just keep reminding ourselves

  35. of that. And then I say, let's gather, but then let's scatter. Because we don't want this

  36. place to be too comfortable. We don't want those couches to be too comfortable, because

  37. if you end up staying on that couch, then the good news doesn't get to be spread to other

  38. people. And so we've been going through the book of Acts, and we've been just seeing time

  39. after time from Acts 6, when they chose some deacons to help distribute food. And then one

  40. of them gets killed, but his face is just glowing just before he gets killed. Stephen, why?

  41. Because his eyes are on Jesus. And then in Acts 8, you see Philip just go from Samaria and

  42. then go to meet the Ethiopian, and he is just filled with joy and bringing joy to the city

  43. of Samaria. Acts 9, Paul responds and sees the glowing light of Jesus and is blinded, but

  44. then is completely converted. Acts 10, Peter is praying. Cornelius is praying. And then Jesus

  45. encounters them, and they are converted. The story just continues. Acts 11, they get to

  46. Antioch, and you see Gentiles, people who weren't Jews, not the originally chosen group, not the

  47. OGs, but the OGs turned the gospel down. So now it goes to the Gentiles, and now phase 3

  48. kicks in where we are going towards the ends of the earth. And of course, last week, Gabe

  49. preached so wonderfully well for us on Acts 12, where you saw Herod respond poorly to the

  50. good news. He responded with pride, and it didn't end well. And yet you see Peter just

  51. humbly just walking through door after door after door. And now we reach Acts 13, where

  52. actually the church itself is really starting to grow. And before we read the word of God

  53. here, I want to ask you a question. How are you responding? What is your response to the

  54. gospel right now? How have you been responding? Maybe you've been a Christian for, I don't know,

  55. Hank, how long have you been a Christian for?

  56. 45 years. Wow. And so whether you've been a Christian for 45 years, or whether you are not

  57. yet a Christian, is how are you responding to this good news? First of all, in your own heart, and then

  58. to the mission of actually keeping this news as news, because it only stays news when you keep passing

  59. it on. Otherwise, it just becomes stale, and it just becomes within you. How are you responding to

  60. the good news? We see here something is really interesting that happens is Paul, Barnabas,

  61. Peter, Cornelius, they keep responding, and they keep acting, putting it into action. You might sit

  62. here and go, well, okay, I kind of want to. I have kind of become a Christian, a bit of a lukewarm one,

  63. to be honest, because I'm so distracted and so busy with my life here in this city. But I am trying to

  64. respond to him. But James, what you're saying, I'm okay with the gathering. You're actually already

  65. quite lucky that I'm gathering here at church today, because I used to be able, I used to be

  66. doing it online during COVID, and that was much easier. But now I'm actually here, so I'm responding

  67. in some way. But the scattering part, where you're saying that I have to go and share with Jesus,

  68. share people about Jesus, oh, that's hard. And I would say, if you feel insecure about that,

  69. I'm going to challenge you and encourage you at the same time. I'm going to pat you on the back and

  70. then slap you at the same time and say, actually, that insecurity that you have is actually pride.

  71. Because actually, pride and insecurity are the same thing, in my eyes. It's just a continuum. It's

  72. just a loop. Think of the most, and I've said this before, think of the most proud person that you know,

  73. the one who feels as though they have to tell you everything about everything they've done,

  74. where they studied, everyone they know. At their heart, what are they? Insecure. Because they're

  75. trying to show you that they belong, that they want you to see them. And someone who's insecure,

  76. or if you say, well, I can't do that. I can't come up and open up the Bible and talk. I just don't know

  77. enough. Well, actually, I would say, well, actually, you're prideful too. But because who said anything about

  78. that you're the one who's doing it? Have we learned anything from the book of Acts? Not the acts of the

  79. apostles, but the act of the Holy Spirit through the apostles. All of this is the Holy Spirit. And you will see

  80. this again and again. And it always seems like, wait, this is getting a bit tedious. The Word of God.

  81. Why do you keep reminding us that it's the Holy Spirit that's doing this stuff? It's because,

  82. well, I don't know about you, but for me, I always forget. I always think it's me that's doing it.

  83. But I don't think that's what Peter felt. I don't think that's what Paul felt. I think they were

  84. just like, what is God doing? What is the Holy Spirit doing? I would love to just follow and just

  85. go along with him. And you see it here in the chapter 13. And actually, the mission starts,

  86. actually, I've got a, I just wanted to briefly introduce you to, I've got a group of friends here,

  87. all from Young Life in different parts, from Latin America, from Africa, and from Europe.

  88. There's been a global leaders conference where all the leaders of Young Life get together

  89. to talk about, well, just how to continue to share the good news and share the mission.

  90. And we've been talking a lot about how to do that, how to strategize, how to plan. Of course,

  91. the other evening, we had a mentor of mine come and speak to us and kind of blew all that out the

  92. window. Because the whole goal is to keep your eyes on Jesus. And it's fascinating. You see it

  93. aligned here that the strategy and the mission of the kingdom of God moving starts with a church

  94. service. And I want to challenge you here today. You may have just showed up because it's what you do.

  95. It's part of your muscle memory now. But what if God showed up today and spoke to you

  96. and said, I want you to do something? One, would you hear it? And two, would you respond to it?

  97. My prayer is that now, not all of us are going to get that. Not everyone gets it here.

  98. But can we be prepared? Can we be prepared for the living God who's right here now,

  99. probably sitting next to me here to speak to us and for us to respond? On that note,

  100. I'm going to invite us to stand for the word of the Lord. And I'm going to ask, actually,

  101. ask my friend Kathy from Canada to come and read it to us. Acts chapter 13, verse 1 to 12.

    Acts 13:1–12

  102. All right. Hello. Okay. Acts 13.

  103. Now, now they were in the church at Antioch, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon, who was

  104. called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manan, a lifelong friend of Herod, the Tetrarch, and Saul. While they

  105. were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, set apart for me, Barnabas and Saul,

  106. for the work to which I have called them. Then, after fasting and praying, they laid their hands

  107. on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia,

  108. and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God

  109. in the synagogues of the Jews, and they had John to assist them. When they had gone through the whole

  110. island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

  111. He was with the procouncil, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul

  112. and sought to hear the word of God. But Elimus, the magician, for that is the meaning of his name,

  113. opposed them, seeking to turn the procouncil away from the faith. But Saul, who was also called Paul,

  114. filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, You son of the devil, you enemy of all

  115. righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths

  116. of the Lord? And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to

  117. see the sun for a time. Immediately, mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking

  118. people to lead him by the hand. Then the procouncil believed when he saw what had occurred, for he was

  119. astonished at the teaching of the Lord. The word of God. Praise be to God. Thank you, Kathy. Please take a seat.

  120. Holy Spirit, we pray, as you were there at that time in that church service, we know that you are here.

  121. And you've called us to be set apart. Lord, we are ready. Would you speak? Your servants are listening.

  122. We seek to respond to you in any and every way that you call us.

  123. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  124. So, the church starts to grow in Antioch, the city that's so connected. And actually, it's beautiful just

  125. to have friends come and, I know we have Young Life, we have Bible Project friends coming here, and

  126. it would have felt a little bit like this. A group of people gathering in one place, and then visitors

  127. coming in as well. And actually, you see here later in this chapter, that actually, then they were,

  128. Paul and Barnabas would visit different churches, and then they would be asked to speak. Now, whether

  129. they were received well or not is what we're going to find out, but that is how it would have felt.

  130. And so, they're in this church service, and it starts out, and I'm just going to go through verse by verse.

  131. And so, if you have your Bibles,

  132. remember, only paper Bibles.

  133. Mrs. Brown, do you have your paper Bible with you?

  134. You don't. Every time you...

  135. Never mind. We'll leave it there.

  136. 52 verses.

  137. So, I'm going to have 52 points this morning,

  138. but we're just going to go through each one.

  139. First, now there were a church in the Antioch,

  140. prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon,

  141. who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,

  142. Manine of a lifelong friend of Herod,

  143. the Tetrarch, and Saul.

  144. Talking about different people in the church, I was like, why are you writing

  145. this list, Luke? I think he's telling us again

  146. that, hey, this church was eclectic.

  147. It was a mixed bag of people

  148. from all over, of different kinds

  149. of races and cultures.

  150. And you hear this time and time again,

  151. and later in Acts 16, you'll see the birth

  152. of the Church of Philippi, and again, a random

  153. collection of people. There's a prison officer,

  154. there's a slave girl, there's a businesswoman, and they're

  155. all sat together in the same room.

  156. This is really interesting to me, because

  157. how often do we go looking for churches

  158. to find the people who look

  159. like us, sound like us,

  160. and basically think like us?

  161. And then we're looking for small groups that I

  162. need to find people who I vibe well with,

  163. who are in the same stage in life

  164. as I, who are single like me,

  165. who are married like me, who are married for

  166. five years like me, who are married for

  167. 25 years like me, who have children who are

  168. newborn like me, who have children who are just

  169. about to enter the teenage years like me,

  170. who have adult children like me, and you

  171. wonder, oh, I don't

  172. know if I saw that

  173. in the early church. And I'm not

  174. here saying, hey, actually,

  175. those complaints are invalid, because I think

  176. there is something about doing life with a

  177. group of people who truly understand

  178. where you're coming from. I get that.

  179. But there's also this beautiful chance where

  180. you're talking to someone who is from a

  181. different place, different

  182. country. My friend Power here

  183. serves in Africa and is the lead

  184. for Zimbabwe, and he's going to be developing

  185. Young Life in Nairobi and in Cape Town,

  186. and I'm like,

  187. God, him and I

  188. don't look alike,

  189. don't think the same

  190. way. And if I'm honest, it's

  191. harder talking to him than talking

  192. to my brother, who grew up in the same house

  193. as me. But he's so much better

  194. and smarter and better looking than my

  195. brother. There's something there that really

  196. blesses me.

  197. There's something

  198. beautiful about being with different people, and so

  199. there's that balance, and I get it.

  200. But if you're sat here looking around

  201. at this church and going, there's no one who

  202. is like me here,

  203. I'll say then, perfect, you're in the right

  204. place. You are representing you.

  205. The church of God is a mosaic of different

  206. kinds of people, not just one

  207. copy and paste across the whole land.

  208. I think that's why Luke is showing that

  209. to us here. And verse 2, while they were

  210. worshipping the Lord and fasting,

  211. the Holy Spirit said, set apart for me

  212. Barnabas and Paul for the work

  213. to which I have called them.

  214. I would love that. I would love that for me,

  215. and I would love that for you.

  216. Well, when we're worshipping and praying,

  217. suddenly God says,

  218. all right,

  219. Josh Shum and Josh Piano,

  220. set them apart.

  221. They're going to head

  222. to Latin America to serve.

  223. That'd be so clear.

  224. But yet,

  225. that's often not what happens.

  226. What happens afterwards, they hear that,

  227. and then after fasting and praying,

  228. they lay their hands on them and set them

  229. off. This tells me one thing.

  230. The mission of God is not ours.

  231. We did not invent the mission of God.

  232. David Platt says this,

  233. missioning, just being missionaries

  234. or just pursuing and growing the mission

  235. is not our idea.

  236. It's not because we're doing it

  237. out of the goodness of our own hearts.

  238. This is God's idea.

  239. And we're just simply just

  240. going along for the ride.

  241. You know, and for those of us,

  242. maybe not for the average person

  243. who's working in an office

  244. and just trying to figure out

  245. how to involve Jesus in your life.

  246. For those of us who have given

  247. our lives up to trying to follow,

  248. we're trying to think,

  249. well, what's the strategy?

  250. How do we do this?

  251. For a few years,

  252. I was strapped in fear of the verse,

  253. without vision,

  254. people perish.

  255. And so I kept thinking,

  256. what's my vision?

  257. What's my strategy

  258. to go and spread the gospel?

  259. Until I found out that passage

  260. in Proverbs 29

  261. isn't talking about my own vision

  262. and my own strategy.

  263. It's without prophetic vision,

  264. people lack restraint.

  265. Without a visual on God,

  266. without seeing God himself,

  267. you won't know where to go.

  268. You will lack focus,

  269. is what it's actually saying.

  270. The first kickoff

  271. of missions committee meeting here

  272. was through prayer and fasting.

  273. That was it.

  274. Francis Chan says this,

  275. we've made the great commission

  276. about our strategies,

  277. but the early church knew

  278. it was the spirit's work.

  279. They just obeyed.

  280. Tozer says the spirit himself

  281. is the very strategy of God.

  282. That's it.

  283. Do we as a group

  284. come together enough

  285. to worship and pray

  286. and fast and go,

  287. God, where do you want to send us?

  288. And it will all be

  289. to different places.

  290. Paul and Barnabas get sent here.

  291. Josh and Danny get sent there.

  292. And that's the beauty of it.

  293. As followers of Christ,

  294. we're following.

  295. Yet so often we think,

  296. okay, as leaders,

  297. we have to make up

  298. where we're going.

  299. We have to decide,

  300. no, no, no.

  301. If you look at the leaders here,

  302. they were simply following.

  303. And so they go.

  304. Well, actually,

  305. after that,

  306. they hear that

  307. and they continue

  308. to then fast and pray

  309. and then they lay

  310. their hands on them

  311. and then they are sent off.

  312. Verse two says,

  313. the Holy Spirit says.

  314. In verse four,

  315. so being sent out by who?

  316. Not by the church.

  317. By the Holy Spirit.

  318. Again, so it's,

  319. can I,

  320. have I said that enough?

  321. Did I say that today?

  322. It's all about the Holy Spirit.

  323. It's all about God.

  324. It's all about going,

  325. God, where do you want to send me

  326. and will you come with me?

  327. And so they go,

  328. verse four,

  329. and they actually,

  330. they start their missionary journey.

  331. Something else here.

  332. Acts nine,

  333. which was only three,

  334. four chapters ago,

  335. that's when Saul was converted.

  336. We think,

  337. sometimes we look at this,

  338. we read this,

  339. all the highlights of it

  340. and we think immediately

  341. he then went to

  342. his first missionary journey.

  343. He spent about 10 years.

  344. He went home

  345. and he was just

  346. mulling over the scriptures.

  347. He was mulling over his encounter

  348. for 10 years

  349. before it was time

  350. to go on this first missionary trip.

  351. Sometimes we're just in a rush.

  352. Sometimes we want to

  353. out of our eagerness,

  354. out of our passion for God

  355. and yet here

  356. we see Paul wakes 10 years

  357. before God sends him out.

  358. And so he goes

  359. and they go on this little journey.

  360. They go on this little road trip

  361. and they go to Cyprus first

  362. and then

  363. what I'm going to focus on today

  364. is actually

  365. as they share the gospel,

  366. there are different reactions

  367. to the gospel

  368. and I think they are

  369. the different reactions

  370. that we will see today also.

  371. Actually, just as a show of hands,

  372. who's ever attempted

  373. to share the gospel

  374. with someone

  375. who is not a Christian?

  376. Can you just put your hand?

  377. Amazing.

  378. I was so afraid

  379. that there'd be

  380. five people

  381. and they'd be all in this corner.

  382. Can we just see that again

  383. and then just look around?

  384. If you've ever tried

  385. to share the gospel,

  386. that is so

  387. harmony.

  388. That is it.

  389. If you haven't put your hand up,

  390. don't worry.

  391. You will put your hand up

  392. at some point

  393. because as long as you're open,

  394. God will use you.

  395. But I want to warn you today,

  396. when you do do that

  397. or those of us

  398. who have done that,

  399. we often receive

  400. with different responses.

  401. Pastor Gabe,

  402. when you've shared the gospel,

  403. what responses have you had?

  404. Sometimes people

  405. say, like, I don't believe.

  406. Yeah.

  407. It's like, okay,

  408. that's good that you believe this.

  409. That's good for you.

  410. But, you know,

  411. I'm happy living my life.

  412. Yeah.

  413. It's a cool story, bro.

  414. Someone, yeah,

  415. but it's for you,

  416. but it's not for me.

  417. I don't believe.

  418. And then,

  419. or just,

  420. I just don't care.

  421. Shigala,

  422. what about you?

  423. When you share the gospel,

  424. what reactions have you received?

  425. Yeah.

  426. Yeah.

  427. Yeah.

  428. Yeah.

  429. So,

  430. there she goes,

  431. Shigala,

  432. talking about that Jesus again.

  433. Wouldn't it be amazing

  434. if Shigala made it

  435. into the Bible

  436. and the one line

  437. of descriptor for her

  438. was she just kept

  439. talking about Jesus.

  440. Wouldn't that be cool?

  441. Wouldn't that be cool

  442. of all of us?

  443. Caleb,

  444. what about you?

  445. Indifference.

  446. Indifference.

  447. I think that's probably

  448. the biggest one.

  449. And I actually think

  450. that might be

  451. the most dangerous one.

  452. When they're kind of like,

  453. hmm,

  454. okay.

  455. And we move on.

  456. And then we're,

  457. because sometimes I find

  458. I get,

  459. I do better,

  460. I mean,

  461. I've told you before

  462. when I argue with my wife,

  463. I get smarter and smarter

  464. and wittier and wittier

  465. when the fight gets

  466. more and more heated.

  467. Sometimes I find

  468. when I get more resistance,

  469. I know what to say more,

  470. or at least

  471. I know what not to say more.

  472. But when it's indifference,

  473. when there's nothing

  474. to bounce off,

  475. it's kind of like,

  476. hmm.

  477. Well,

  478. we see here

  479. that actually there are

  480. lots of different kinds

  481. of responses.

  482. The first one is a guy

  483. called Bar-Jesus.

  484. Ironically,

  485. that means the son of Jesus,

  486. but Luke does tell us

  487. another name,

  488. which is Elimas,

  489. which means magician.

  490. So they go to Cyprus

  491. and they start sharing

  492. the gospel there

  493. in the synagogue.

  494. Again,

  495. Paul and Barnabas

  496. at this point,

  497. their strategy,

  498. Holy Spirit sends them,

  499. but where do they go

  500. when they turn up to a new town?

  501. What do you do?

  502. Well,

  503. first of all,

  504. I'll find where the best place

  505. to have noodles is.

  506. Once I've found out

  507. where the noodles are,

  508. I'll have noodles,

  509. and then for them,

  510. they will then head

  511. to the synagogue.

  512. That is the first place

  513. they go.

  514. Why?

  515. Because the gospel,

  516. the message will come

  517. through the Jews.

  518. And so,

  519. okay,

  520. I'm going to go

  521. and speak to whoever

  522. will listen in the synagogue

  523. because that's what they do.

  524. They get there

  525. and they see two guys.

  526. They see two people.

  527. The first guy

  528. that Luke talks about here

  529. is the false prophet Bar-Jesus,

  530. also known as Elimas,

  531. and the other

  532. is the proconsul,

  533. the governor of Cyprus,

  534. basically,

  535. Sergius Paulus.

  536. I'll talk about Bar-Jesus first.

  537. His name is Elimas,

  538. the magician.

  539. Often in those days

  540. for powerful people,

  541. they would surround themselves

  542. with, well,

  543. yes men,

  544. and they would also

  545. surround themselves

  546. with sorcerers.

  547. Magicians.

  548. Why?

  549. To tell them the future.

  550. Hey, tell me,

  551. mirror, mirror on the wall.

  552. Tell me how I will continue

  553. to be the most powerful

  554. of them all.

  555. And so these magicians

  556. would stay around them

  557. and whisper into their ears

  558. and say,

  559. Bar-Jesus,

  560. one of these people.

  561. And so you can imagine

  562. he was very hostile

  563. to Paul and Barnabas.

  564. He was like,

  565. do not come near my territory.

  566. This is how I make a living,

  567. talking to this governor,

  568. trying to strike fear

  569. into him

  570. so he can remain in power

  571. so that I can remain in power.

  572. And so I can live a life

  573. of money and wealth

  574. and fame.

  575. And so Elimas goes to them

  576. and actually what he does,

  577. he does something in verse 8

  578. and he opposes them,

  579. seeking to turn the proconsul

  580. away from the faith.

  581. So he's trying to completely

  582. sow deceit

  583. into this conversation

  584. right here.

  585. But on the other hand,

  586. there is the governor,

  587. Sergius Paulus,

  588. who, again,

  589. I would love to be described

  590. as this,

  591. a man of intelligence,

  592. who summoned Barnabas

  593. and Saul

  594. and sought to hear

  595. the word of God.

  596. This guy was smart

  597. and this guy was hungry

  598. and this guy was powerful.

  599. So he hears about Paul

  600. and Barnabas,

  601. hey, can you come

  602. and tell me about this

  603. because I've heard

  604. that some things

  605. are happening here.

  606. Would you tell me

  607. what you are talking about?

  608. The magician next to him

  609. goes, don't.

  610. Don't listen to them.

  611. It's false.

  612. This tells me one thing.

  613. When we go and share

  614. the gospel,

  615. we will have opposition.

  616. You will.

  617. Every time you try

  618. and stand up,

  619. Ephesians 6,

  620. talking about the spiritual

  621. warfare that happens,

  622. what's the thing

  623. that is that just stand,

  624. just remain firm

  625. and stand

  626. and the wind will blow

  627. and the resistance

  628. will come.

  629. So let's not be surprised

  630. when that comes

  631. in my earliest.

  632. So when Christine and I,

  633. we first decided

  634. we're going to quit our jobs

  635. and go into ministry.

  636. In that moment,

  637. in those first few months,

  638. we just kept getting

  639. wave after wave of attack

  640. of different kinds of things.

  641. And on one hand,

  642. you know what, God,

  643. I don't, I don't,

  644. I actually don't know

  645. if this is worth it.

  646. I think it might actually,

  647. maybe I'll just go back.

  648. Maybe I'll just lie back down again.

  649. It's like if you're standing

  650. in a typhoon,

  651. maybe it's easy just to lie down

  652. and just let it go over you.

  653. And then Ephesians 6

  654. just tells you,

  655. stand,

  656. stand

  657. and stand.

  658. We will get opposition.

  659. This has happened

  660. multiple times here,

  661. especially when I invite friends

  662. and who,

  663. who come and share

  664. the word with me

  665. and that week

  666. is just a terrible week.

  667. Why?

  668. Nothing,

  669. nothing special,

  670. but other than just

  671. to distract,

  672. discourage,

  673. divide.

  674. Be prepared.

  675. So I hope you are ready

  676. for this as you put,

  677. if you put up your hand

  678. or you will put up your hand

  679. or you pray that one day

  680. you'll be able to put up your hand

  681. that you will have shared

  682. the gospel.

  683. Just be prepared.

  684. That isn't always easy.

  685. In fact,

  686. you will have opposition.

  687. Even like here,

  688. you see that happening.

  689. And of course,

  690. it's not even Paul.

  691. Jesus himself says,

  692. blessed are you

  693. when others persecute you

  694. and utter all kinds of evil

  695. against you.

  696. So I don't want to,

  697. I don't want to oversell it

  698. in a way that's false as well

  699. because it is good

  700. and it's just beautiful

  701. when you see people

  702. responding to the good news

  703. of Jesus.

  704. But there is,

  705. there is,

  706. it often gets harder

  707. before it gets better.

  708. And we see that here.

  709. But,

  710. whilst there are people

  711. who are opposing,

  712. there are also people

  713. who are genuinely hungry.

  714. This intelligent,

  715. powerful man,

  716. hungry for God.

  717. Can we just appreciate

  718. Sergius Paul is here?

  719. He didn't have to do this.

  720. He's already got all the power.

  721. He's the governor.

  722. He's,

  723. he's in charge

  724. of this whole island.

  725. He doesn't need

  726. to seek a higher power.

  727. Especially,

  728. what it would do

  729. to him

  730. in front of his colleagues.

  731. In front of the empire.

  732. And yet,

  733. here he is saying,

  734. you know what,

  735. I just want to know the truth.

  736. And it continues to reaffirm

  737. that message

  738. that even though

  739. you have everything

  740. that you think you want,

  741. you get to the end

  742. and you realize,

  743. oh actually,

  744. there's still something more.

  745. And I think Sergius Paul

  746. is exactly in that space.

  747. I have everything I need,

  748. yet I still don't have

  749. the one thing that I need.

  750. And so there will be people

  751. who are hungry.

  752. There will be people

  753. who are asking questions.

  754. There will be people

  755. who are watching us.

  756. Because how else

  757. did he hear about them?

  758. Be prepared

  759. for all kinds

  760. of responses.

  761. Whether those

  762. who are opposing you

  763. or those who are

  764. actually hungry

  765. and wanting to ask you.

  766. And then the most

  767. crazy thing happens,

  768. verse 9.

  769. Saul looks at Elimas

  770. and says this,

  771. You son of the devil,

  772. you enemy of all righteousness,

  773. full of all deceit

  774. and villainy,

  775. will you not stop

  776. making crooked

  777. the straight path

  778. of the Lord?

  779. And now behold,

  780. the hand of the Lord

  781. is upon you

  782. and you will be blind

  783. and unable to see

  784. the sun for a time.

  785. And immediately,

  786. mist and darkness

  787. fell upon him

  788. and he went about

  789. seeking people

  790. to lead him by the hand.

  791. Isn't it ironic

  792. that only a few chapters later,

  793. Saul,

  794. who was blinding himself

  795. as a sign

  796. and a symptom

  797. of his own

  798. spiritual blindness

  799. is now dishing it out?

  800. I like to think

  801. that actually Saul,

  802. and he says

  803. it's only for a time.

  804. I'm almost like,

  805. I hope Saul's praying

  806. for this guy going,

  807. Hey, you don't know now.

  808. Once you know,

  809. you're going to know.

  810. But don't worry,

  811. you're going to be blind

  812. for a few days

  813. just like me.

  814. We don't actually hear

  815. what happens to Elimas

  816. after this.

  817. But in that,

  818. can you just see

  819. the just radical transformation

  820. when someone meets Jesus?

  821. The courage that it takes now,

  822. hey, he's calling it out.

  823. So this is something else

  824. that we have to do.

  825. When we are sharing

  826. the gospel with people,

  827. this is my own personal experience,

  828. when I'm trying to share

  829. the gospel with Trevor,

  830. there'll actually always be

  831. voices on either side.

  832. It's our job to discern

  833. what the Spirit wants us to do

  834. in that moment

  835. because actually

  836. everyone here needs Jesus.

  837. Everyone here needs

  838. to hear the gospel.

  839. But sometimes

  840. there will be truths

  841. that will come out

  842. that are just so piercing

  843. and so destructive

  844. to the good news

  845. that we actually

  846. have to call out.

  847. Do we have the courage

  848. to do that?

  849. And honestly,

  850. this, of course,

  851. I'm not saying

  852. anyone should go out now

  853. and find someone

  854. and call them

  855. the son of the devil.

  856. That's not what I'm saying.

  857. But how could this look?

  858. This could look like

  859. when you're in the office

  860. and someone's asking Kenneth,

  861. hey, Kenneth,

  862. like,

  863. bankers aren't usually kind

  864. and you didn't used to be kind,

  865. but now you're a little bit kind.

  866. Why are you kind?

  867. And then Kenneth will go,

  868. well,

  869. I still want to make

  870. as much money as I can

  871. and have my business go well,

  872. but actually,

  873. ultimately,

  874. I trust that God is in control.

  875. And ultimately,

  876. it's not about money.

  877. Someone on the side

  878. will then say,

  879. that's a load of rubbish.

  880. Money is the only thing

  881. that makes the world go around.

  882. And then,

  883. do we have the courage

  884. in that moment to go,

  885. actually,

  886. that's not true.

  887. Actually,

  888. I don't believe that.

  889. Respectfully,

  890. humbly.

  891. I don't believe that

  892. because I see people

  893. who have all the money

  894. in the world,

  895. they are just,

  896. their lives are just

  897. completely broken.

  898. They're not happy.

  899. They're not satisfied.

  900. And I believe that

  901. the love of money

  902. is the root of all evil.

  903. Are we willing to stand up

  904. and say it in the most,

  905. I mean,

  906. Jesus,

  907. John 1,

  908. filled with grace and truth.

  909. Can we do the same

  910. is all we're really

  911. looking for here.

  912. So Paul confronts him

  913. and the guy gets blind,

  914. again,

  915. just a symptom

  916. of his spiritual blindness

  917. here.

  918. But we see here

  919. that actually the gospel

  920. is for everyone,

  921. even the Gentiles

  922. and even the elite.

  923. Even the elite.

  924. Actually,

  925. in Hong Kong,

  926. we have something

  927. which is we are surrounded,

  928. of course,

  929. by capitalism and money

  930. and you see all these

  931. people of influence.

  932. And sometimes you think,

  933. well,

  934. how about we go

  935. to the people of influence?

  936. Maybe they will change the world

  937. and sometimes I'm resistant

  938. to that because,

  939. well,

  940. Jesus didn't choose

  941. the people of influence,

  942. he just chose anyone.

  943. But it doesn't mean

  944. the people of influence

  945. are excluded

  946. from the gospel either.

  947. In fact,

  948. they have their role

  949. to play.

  950. The Ethiopian,

  951. the CFO of Ethiopia

  952. was converted by Philip,

  953. by the Holy Spirit.

  954. he probably goes back

  955. to Ethiopia

  956. and continues to spread

  957. the gospel

  958. in the chambers

  959. of the queen.

  960. We all have our role

  961. to play

  962. whether we are elite

  963. or not.

  964. And you see,

  965. when he's preaching,

  966. he's really preaching

  967. about one thing,

  968. Jesus.

  969. So they finish one place,

  970. oh,

  971. the proconsul,

  972. the governor,

  973. looks at the magician

  974. and goes,

  975. oh my goodness,

  976. he's blind.

  977. And there's two things.

  978. One,

  979. he's astonished

  980. by that power.

  981. He's like,

  982. did you just,

  983. how did you just do that?

  984. There's something here

  985. that I don't understand.

  986. And second,

  987. he's astonished

  988. by the teaching.

  989. What would have been

  990. the teaching?

  991. The teaching would have been

  992. just only one thing,

  993. Jesus,

  994. about who Jesus is.

  995. And you see a glimpse

  996. of that as we move on

  997. into the next passage.

  998. So after that,

  999. they then move on

  1000. to Perga.

  1001. Perga from there

  1002. in Pamphylia.

  1003. And then they go,

1004. what do they do again?

1005. They go into the synagogue again.

  1006. This is just,

1007. that's what they do now.

  1008. This is the basically

  1009. laying down

  1010. the strategy for them,

  1011. which is to go

1012. and speak to the Jews.

  1013. And so they go

  1014. into the synagogue.

  1015. They're noticed

  1016. by the people

  1017. in the synagogue.

  1018. And then the people

  1019. in the synagogue,

  1020. hey,

1021. would you like to come up

1022. and share a little bit?

  1023. And then Paul goes,

  1024. well,

  1025. I don't mind if I do.

  1026. Because actually,

  1027. I've been waiting

  1028. 10 years for this.

  1029. I've been studying

  1030. my whole life,

  1031. the scriptures.

  1032. And I was blind

  1033. the whole time

  1034. until 10 years ago.

1035. And now I want to show you.

1036. So he jumps into a sermon

  1037. and you'll probably

  1038. be mildly relieved

1039. that I'm not going to go

  1040. through the sermon

  1041. verse by verse.

  1042. But what he does

  1043. in this sermon,

  1044. he splits it

  1045. into three parts.

1046. He does a Tim Keller

  1047. three-point sermon.

  1048. And the first point,

  1049. he says,

  1050. actually,

1051. I need you to remind you

  1052. about God's faithfulness

  1053. to Israel,

  1054. the covenant

  1055. that he had

  1056. for you guys.

  1057. And he mentions

  1058. some key people.

  1059. Of course,

  1060. he talks about

  1061. the wilderness here.

  1062. We're in verse 18 now.

1063. And for about 40 years,

1064. he put up with them

  1065. in the wilderness.

  1066. And after destroying

  1067. seven nations

1068. in the land of Canaan,

1069. he gave them the land

  1070. as an inheritance.

  1071. All this took

  1072. about 450 years.

  1073. I'm an impatient person,

  1074. so this speaks

1075. to me all the time.

  1076. I respond to Jesus

  1077. and I want results

  1078. and I want fruit

  1079. immediately.

  1080. And yet,

  1081. Saul meets Jesus,

1082. goes home for 10 years

  1083. to study,

1084. finally goes on his journey

  1085. and then things happen

1086. and he preaches the sermon

  1087. and he reminds them,

  1088. hey,

  1089. the Israelites

  1090. were out there

  1091. for 450 years

  1092. before they got

  1093. what God promised.

  1094. 40 years

  1095. of just wandering around.

  1096. And he goes through

  1097. and he reminds them

  1098. of this

1099. and he talks about Samuel,

  1100. he talks about David,

  1101. the son of Jesse

  1102. after God's own heart

  1103. and then he talks

  1104. about John the Baptist

  1105. and what he's doing,

  1106. he's simply reminding them

  1107. of Israel's history

  1108. and then he's saying,

  1109. actually,

  1110. you know this history

1111. as well as I do

  1112. but the one part

  1113. you don't know

  1114. is that actually

  1115. Christ is the hinge

  1116. of the history.

  1117. Christ is that moment

  1118. where things turn.

  1119. God had a covenant

  1120. with you guys

1121. and you kept messing up

1122. over and over and over again

1123. and you had no way

  1124. of saving yourself

  1125. and then one finally

  1126. who came

  1127. who had clean hands

  1128. and a pure heart

  1129. and he comes

1130. and he ascends the hill

1131. and he dies for us

  1132. and sacrifices for us

1133. so that now we through him

1134. have access to the Father

  1135. because of his spirit.

  1136. And so that's what

  1137. he's trying to,

  1138. so he says,

1139. I know what you know,

  1140. Moses,

  1141. Abraham,

  1142. David,

  1143. Samuel,

1144. I know all this stuff,

1145. I know you do too

  1146. but you're missing

  1147. the final piece

  1148. that makes it all

  1149. work together.

  1150. Jesus,

  1151. I met him,

  1152. I met him 10 years ago,

1153. I was trying to kill

  1154. his people

  1155. but then I realized

  1156. when I met him

  1157. that I was actually

  1158. trying to persecute him

1159. because he told me so

1160. and then I changed my life

  1161. completely around

1162. and please don't call me

  1163. Saul anymore,

  1164. call me Paul

1165. because that's my mission now

1166. to the rest of the world

1167. because I'm going to be

  1168. sharing the gospel

1169. to the ends of the earth

1170. just like Jesus told me so,

1171. I need to tell you

  1172. about Jesus

  1173. is what his sermon

  1174. was about.

  1175. He gives this

  1176. lightning tour

  1177. of the history

  1178. of the Bible

  1179. and points it all

  1180. to Jesus

  1181. and when he talks

  1182. about Jesus

  1183. and this is actually

1184. you and I can learn

  1185. from this,

  1186. he then goes into

  1187. the Bible.

1188. He goes into the Bible

1189. and he actually brings up

  1190. three different passages

  1191. from the Old Testament.

  1192. Remember,

  1193. Paul did not have

  1194. the New Testament,

  1195. he wrote a lot

  1196. of the New Testament

1197. but he didn't have it

  1198. himself,

  1199. right?

  1200. So he would have

1201. just had the Old Testament

  1202. that he's been studying

1203. for the whole of his life

  1204. and he picks out

  1205. some key passages

1206. that he wants to highlight

  1207. to people

1208. and I want to quickly

  1209. show you those things

1210. because it will make sense

  1211. and we will then

1212. be able to apply it.

  1213. So the first thing

1214. he does when he talks

  1215. about Jesus,

1216. he brings up Psalm 2

1217. which is in Acts 13

    Acts 13:32

  1218. verse 32, 33.

  1219. You are my son,

1220. today I have begotten you.

  1221. So the first thing

  1222. he talks about

  1223. is the identity

  1224. and the divinity

  1225. of Jesus.

  1226. He's like,

  1227. this isn't just

  1228. a nice guy.

  1229. Keller said this,

  1230. you cannot just say

  1231. that Jesus is

  1232. an interesting guy.

  1233. You can't stop there.

1234. He's either Lord of all

1235. or he's not at all.

  1236. C.S. Lewis says

  1237. he's either liar,

  1238. lunatic,

  1239. or Lord.

  1240. You cannot just stop

1241. at the nice guy place.

1242. You cannot even just stop

1243. at him being a good prophet

  1244. with good teachings.

  1245. Paul cuts straight in

  1246. and talks about

  1247. who Jesus is

  1248. and he says,

  1249. he quotes Psalm 2,

  1250. you are my son,

1251. today I have begotten you.

  1252. He jumps straight

  1253. into the fact

  1254. that Jesus here

1255. is the son of God.

  1256. His divine nature.

1257. It needed to be this

  1258. in order for him

1259. to save the sins of many

1260. because he was the only one

  1261. who was sinless.

  1262. He's the only one

1263. who is the son of God

1264. sacrificed for all of us.

1265. So he jumps into Psalm 2

  1266. to talk about that

1267. and then he jumps into

  1268. Psalm 16

  1269. where he says,

1270. I will give you the holy

1271. and sure blessings of David.

1272. You will not let your holy ones

  1273. see corruption.

  1274. That's verse 35.

  1275. So he talks about

  1276. the identity of Jesus

1277. and then he talks about

  1278. the sovereignty of God.

  1279. He's saying actually,

  1280. you crucified

  1281. and you know,

  1282. Peter preached this

  1283. in the early books

  1284. of Acts as well.

  1285. He said,

  1286. Jesus who came

1287. and then you put him

  1288. on the cross.

  1289. You killed him.

1290. But God is in control.

  1291. God is sovereign

  1292. and does not let

  1293. his holy ones

  1294. see corruption.

  1295. So these people

1296. would have heard Psalm 2,

  1297. heard Psalm 16

  1298. and go,

  1299. oh,

1300. I grew up in Sunday school

  1301. memorizing that passage

  1302. and I didn't really know

  1303. who that was about.

  1304. So you're saying

  1305. Psalm 2 and Psalm 16

  1306. are actually about Jesus.

1307. And then he carries on.

  1308. He does another quote

1309. and then he goes into

  1310. Isaiah 49 verse 6

    Isaiah 49:6

1311. which is our verse 47

  1312. in Acts.

  1313. I have made you a light

  1314. for the Gentiles

1315. that you may bring salvation

1316. to the ends of us.

  1317. He talks about

  1318. the identity of Jesus.

  1319. Then he talks about

  1320. the sovereignty of God

  1321. using Psalm 16

  1322. and then he goes

  1323. into Isaiah and says,

  1324. actually,

  1325. he's talking to you

1326. about the mission of Jesus.

  1327. Isaiah 49,

1328. what's that whole passage about?

  1329. It's about the servant

  1330. of the Lord

  1331. bringing restoration

  1332. to Israel.

1333. And so they would have

  1334. read that,

  1335. they would have memorized

  1336. that and go,

  1337. well,

  1338. who is the servant

  1339. of the Lord?

1340. Who's going to restore Israel?

  1341. We're in a pretty bad

  1342. place right now.

  1343. Who is it?

  1344. And then Paul's saying,

  1345. it's Jesus.

  1346. He will do this.

  1347. I have made you a light

  1348. for the Gentiles

1349. that you may bring salvation

1350. to the ends of the earth.

  1351. That would have,

  1352. I guess,

1353. have been a little bit confusing

1354. for a Jew at that time

  1355. because,

  1356. well,

  1357. I thought salvation

  1358. was just for us.

  1359. I thought we were

  1360. the chosen people.

  1361. Oh no,

1362. it's going to be through you

  1363. that the whole world

1364. is going to be saved.

1365. But you couldn't do it.

1366. Only the one who knew

1367. no sin could do it

1368. so that we would become

  1369. the righteousness of God

1370. and Jesus is the one

  1371. who can do that.

  1372. Jesus is the one

  1373. who is doing that.

  1374. And it's fascinating here

  1375. as he preaches that,

  1376. he gets two responses.

  1377. Okay?

  1378. There's a first group,

  1379. verse 42.

  1380. See,

  1381. I'm actually going through

  1382. quite quickly.

  1383. As they went out,

  1384. the people begged

  1385. that these things

  1386. might be told them

  1387. the next Sabbath.

1388. They have a church service.

1389. Imagine you guys all do this.

  1390. You never do this,

  1391. which is completely fine,

  1392. by the way.

  1393. But you guys,

  1394. James,

1395. that was such a good sermon.

  1396. I beg you

  1397. that you keep talking

  1398. about this next Sunday.

  1399. Please.

1400. Feel free to do that.

  1401. I'll be around here.

  1402. James,

  1403. please.

  1404. Come and continue

1405. to preach the good news

  1406. of Jesus to us.

  1407. That's how they responded.

  1408. Isn't that cool?

  1409. And so that's what

  1410. they were saying.

  1411. They would come,

  1412. please.

  1413. And actually,

  1414. what's really funny

  1415. is the next week,

  1416. verse 44,

  1417. so next weekend,

  1418. almost the whole city

  1419. gathered to hear

1420. the word of the Lord.

  1421. Imagine that.

  1422. Imagine the fire hazard

  1423. that would be,

1424. waiting for the four lifts

1425. to bring us up here.

  1426. But how does that

  1427. even happen?

  1428. It happens because

  1429. Joseph leaves this service

  1430. and goes,

  1431. I've got to go

1432. and tell people about this

  1433. so they would come

  1434. next Sunday.

  1435. It's Kelvin going

  1436. to the hospital going,

  1437. okay,

  1438. what I just heard

  1439. on Sunday

  1440. was so life-changing,

  1441. I have to go

  1442. and tell my colleagues.

  1443. It reminds me again,

  1444. Acts 11,

  1445. Antioch.

  1446. It's not really

  1447. the main pastor

  1448. that does the sharing.

  1449. Barnabas was there

  1450. just to encourage.

  1451. It was happening

  1452. without him,

  1453. without Paul.

  1454. He's just there

  1455. just to encourage them.

  1456. Keep doing,

1457. stay true to the Lord

  1458. is what he says.

  1459. Keep going

  1460. because the church grows

  1461. not because of me

1462. but it's because of you.

  1463. And so we go.

  1464. And so they go.

1465. So they were so hyped

  1466. about last Sunday's

  1467. church service

  1468. that they leave

  1469. and they tell

  1470. all their friends

  1471. and then next week

  1472. everyone comes back.

1473. And he shares it again

  1474. but this time

  1475. there are people

  1476. who are jealous.

  1477. Where is it?

  1478. Verse 45.

  1479. But when the Jews

  1480. saw the crowds

  1481. so everyone

  1482. in the whole city

  1483. of course not

  1484. every single person

1485. but a big, big crowd

  1486. when the Jews

  1487. saw the crowds

  1488. they were filled

  1489. with jealousy

  1490. and began to contradict

  1491. what Paul was saying

  1492. and reviling him.

  1493. And then Paul responds

  1494. it was necessary

1495. that the word of God

1496. be spoken first to you

  1497. since you thrusted aside

  1498. and judge yourselves

  1499. unworthy of eternal life.

  1500. Behold we are turning

  1501. to the Gentiles.

  1502. So Paul comes back

  1503. next weekend

  1504. okay alright

  1505. I'm going to keep

  1506. preaching the message

  1507. and the next week

  1508. they come

  1509. there's people

  1510. who still love it

  1511. and then there's people

  1512. who are really

  1513. really despising it

  1514. and really really jealous.

  1515. And at that point

  1516. does Paul go

  1517. oh man

  1518. people don't like

  1519. my preaching.

  1520. People aren't laughing

  1521. at my jokes.

  1522. I hope they still

  1523. come back next week.

  1524. No no no

1525. he doesn't say any of that.

  1526. He's saying

  1527. alright

1528. I've done what I have to do

  1529. which is to preach

1530. the gospel to you guys first.

1531. If you don't receive it

1532. I will follow the next instruction

  1533. which is go

  1534. to the Gentiles.

  1535. Go to the next

  1536. group of people.

1537. And so he does that

  1538. and whilst that is

  1539. the Gentiles

  1540. verse 48

  1541. it's like yes

  1542. finally us.

  1543. These Jews

  1544. they're so snobby.

1545. They think it's all about them.

  1546. We get to hear

  1547. this is for us.

  1548. The salvation

  1549. is to the ends

  1550. of the earth.

  1551. That includes us.

  1552. And so they're rejoicing

  1553. verse 48

  1554. and when the Gentiles

  1555. heard this

  1556. they began rejoicing

  1557. and glorifying

1558. the word of the Lord.

1559. And as many as were

  1560. appointed to eternal life

  1561. they believed.

1562. They heard the good news

  1563. and I thought

1564. this is the best news

  1565. that we have heard.

  1566. We've always been

  1567. on the outside

  1568. and now we realize

1569. that we are on the inside.

  1570. And we thank God

  1571. because someone

1572. who was on the inside

1573. came out to get us

  1574. and let us

  1575. take his place.

  1576. We rejoice.

  1577. And so they are

  1578. super happy

1579. and the word of the Lord

  1580. was spreading

  1581. throughout the whole region.

  1582. Again not because

  1583. Paul and Barnabas

  1584. were running big events

  1585. but because the people

  1586. were transformed

1587. and would leave the gathering

  1588. and then they would

  1589. start sharing

  1590. with all the places

  1591. that we were in.

  1592. That's how the word

  1593. of the Lord spread.

  1594. But the Jews

  1595. but the Jews

  1596. verse 50

  1597. we keep seeing this

  1598. incited the devout women

  1599. and of high standing

  1600. and the leading men

  1601. of the city

  1602. and stirred up persecution

  1603. against Paul and Barnabas.

  1604. Earlier in the chapter

  1605. we see

  1606. a Roman officer

  1607. of power

  1608. who was hungry

  1609. and intelligent

  1610. hungry for God

  1611. being converted.

  1612. and the good

  1613. that that can come

  1614. when people

  1615. of influence

  1616. in the city

  1617. who are choosing

  1618. to follow Christ

  1619. and I know plenty

  1620. of these people

  1621. I'm so inspired

  1622. by them

  1623. and they can bring

  1624. about change

  1625. because God's placed

  1626. them in certain places

  1627. that they can really

  1628. have influence.

  1629. Speak to the people

  1630. of the city

  1631. who will listen

  1632. and yet

  1633. it can also be

  1634. the other way.

  1635. You see the Jews

  1636. also find powerful people

  1637. to stir up persecution.

  1638. it ends up

  1639. even though

  1640. the whole city

1641. came to their church service

  1642. they ended up being

1643. driven out of the city.

  1644. And so you see

  1645. there will be indifference.

  1646. There will be people

1647. who are just a little bit

  1648. apathetic.

1649. There may be real resistance.

1650. But I want to see

1651. I want us to see

  1652. as I finish here

  1653. how do

  1654. Paul and Barnabas

  1655. respond.

  1656. One of the greatest

  1657. freedoms

  1658. we have

  1659. is how we react

  1660. to things

  1661. and how we react

  1662. to things

  1663. tells us a lot

  1664. about what's going

  1665. on inside.

  1666. So imagine them

  1667. great Sunday service

  1668. one week

  1669. everyone begs them

  1670. to come back

  1671. they come back

  1672. the next week

  1673. it's packed

  1674. they preach

  1675. a group of people

  1676. super happy

  1677. a group of people

  1678. super unhappy

  1679. drive them out

  1680. of the city

  1681. what would their

  1682. response be

  1683. verse 51

1684. wow and just like that

1685. I finished the whole chapter

  1686. but they shook

  1687. off from the dust

  1688. from their feet

  1689. against them

  1690. and went to Iconium

  1691. and the disciples

  1692. were filled with joy

1693. and with the Holy Spirit

  1694. what?

  1695. They got driven out

  1696. of the church

  1697. and of the city

  1698. and they were filled

  1699. with joy

  1700. because they were filled

  1701. with the Holy Spirit

  1702. you can see

  1703. that Paul and Barnabas

  1704. did not idolize

  1705. the approval

  1706. of men

  1707. that was not

  1708. their concern

  1709. they weren't

  1710. they weren't

  1711. even really

  1712. that concerned

  1713. about how many

  1714. people would

  1715. believe and be

  1716. converted to the

  1717. kingdom of God

  1718. they were just

  1719. doing their job

  1720. receiving the

  1721. marching orders

  1722. from the Holy Spirit

  1723. and just simply

  1724. responding to him

  1725. and the outcome

  1726. doesn't really matter

  1727. to them

  1728. of course

  1729. there's another part

  1730. which is when we

  1731. share the gospel

  1732. with people

  1733. we hope that actually

  1734. we have this

  1735. compassion for them

  1736. we have this love

  1737. for them

  1738. that our hearts

  1739. break for them

  1740. because they're not

  1741. in the place

  1742. where they are ready

1743. to hear the good news

  1744. yet

  1745. but yet we also

  1746. have to surrender

  1747. and go well that's

  1748. actually not my job

  1749. my job is simply

  1750. just to go out

  1751. and share the gospel

  1752. with whoever will hear

  1753. and whoever refuses

  1754. to hear

  1755. and then God

  1756. will do his work

  1757. or not

  1758. at that time

1759. or at a later date

  1760. I can't imagine

  1761. being thrown out

  1762. of a city

  1763. and yet being

  1764. filled with joy

  1765. yet they had

  1766. that freedom

  1767. to react

  1768. in such a way

  1769. and that freedom

  1770. comes from only

  1771. one place

  1772. Jesus

  1773. verse 38

  1774. let it be known

  1775. to you therefore

  1776. brothers

  1777. that through this man

  1778. forgiveness of sins

  1779. is proclaimed to you

  1780. and by him

  1781. everyone

  1782. who believes

  1783. is freed

  1784. from everything

  1785. from which you

  1786. could not be freed

  1787. by the law

  1788. of Moses

  1789. that statement

  1790. would have been

  1791. super powerful

  1792. for them to say

  1793. super powerful

  1794. Paul to say

  1795. because he

  1796. had received

  1797. the forgiveness

  1798. of sins

  1799. from Jesus

  1800. he was freed

  1801. and so he

  1802. could be free

  1803. to react

  1804. however he wanted

  1805. whether it's

  1806. indifference

  1807. whether it's

  1808. actual

  1809. persecution

  1810. it did not

  1811. really matter

  1812. we're going to

  1813. finish here

  1814. and I'm going to

  1815. ask you

  1816. to join me

  1817. together as we

  1818. worship

  1819. and as we pray

  1820. and actually

  1821. in the rest of

  1822. this week

  1823. if you are

  1824. willing to

  1825. commit with me

  1826. to fast

  1827. okay God

  1828. where do you

  1829. want me to go

  1830. set apart for me

  1831. Paul and Barnabas

  1832. set apart for me

  1833. Caleb and Jackie

  1834. set apart for me

  1835. Nathan and Kelly

  1836. set apart for me

  1837. these people

  1838. to do my will

  1839. and I will send

  1840. them out

  1841. wouldn't that be

  1842. cool

  1843. maybe we can

  1844. come back next

  1845. week

  1846. and I'll ask

  1847. who's managed

  1848. to share the

  1849. gospel

  1850. this week

  1851. and we all

  1852. get to put our

  1853. hands up

  1854. and be completely

  1855. freed from

  1856. however other

  1857. people respond

  1858. to it

  1859. because the

  1860. only one that

  1861. matters is how

  1862. we respond

  1863. what's your

  1864. response today

  1865. one to the

  1866. gospel

  1867. whether you've

  1868. been a believer

  1869. for 45 years

  1870. or not

  1871. how do you

  1872. receive this

  1873. good news

  1874. let that seep

  1875. into your heart

  1876. when you realize

  1877. the words of

  1878. Ephesians 2

  1879. that you were

  1880. once dead

  1881. in your sins

  1882. and trespasses

  1883. you were once

  1884. blind

  1885. you were once

  1886. lost

  1887. but now I

  1888. am made alive

  1889. together

  1890. because of

  1891. the people

  1892. around us

  1893. and Christ

  1894. is the

  1895. cornerstone

  1896. that's a

  1897. message to

  1898. share

  1899. would you

  1900. allow that

  1901. message to

  1902. seep into

  1903. your heart

  1904. and then how

  1905. will you respond

  1906. if God tells

  1907. you to go

  1908. now God

  1909. does call

  1910. some people

  1911. to stay

  1912. home

  1913. to stay

  1914. in the city

  1915. that they were

  1916. born to do

  1917. things for

  1918. him there

  1919. actually

  1920. Barnabas

  1921. stayed in

  1922. the same

  1923. place

  1924. for the

  1925. longest

  1926. time

  1927. the

  1928. apostle

  1929. stayed

  1930. in

  1931. Jerusalem

  1932. whilst others

  1933. were scattered

  1934. so there

  1935. is a possibility

  1936. that you don't

  1937. have to move

  1938. to the other

  1939. side of the

  1940. world

  1941. but it's also

  1942. unlikely that

  1943. he's calling

  1944. you to stay

  1945. at home

  1946. on your

  1947. couch

  1948. that'll be

  1949. hard

  1950. Hudson Taylor

  1951. said that

  1952. right

  1953. he said

  1954. if you're

  1955. staying at

  1956. home on

  1957. your couch

  1958. you better

  1959. be sure

  1960. that's

  1961. your

  1962. calling

  1963. if not

  1964. go

  1965. because more

  1966. often than

  1967. not as we

  1968. look through

  1969. this book

  1970. as we look

  1971. at to see

  1972. how we are

  1973. all recipients

  1974. of that good

  1975. news that

  1976. message that

  1977. was passed

  1978. it was because

  1979. people got

  1980. off their

  1981. couch left

  1982. their homes

  1983. left their

  1984. cities left

  1985. their countries

  1986. for the

  1987. gospel

  1988. that word

  1989. go often

  1990. is a soft

  1991. one for

  1992. those who

  1993. really want

  1994. to hear

  1995. every now

  1996. and again

  1997. it'll be

  1998. loud and

  1999. blinding

  2000. like it

  2001. was for

  2002. Paul

  2003. but most

  2004. of the

  2005. time it's

  2006. soft

  2007. would you

  2008. join me

  2009. as we

  2010. worship

  2011. to ask

  2012. God

  2013. where are

  2014. you calling

  2015. me

  2016. what are

  2017. you setting

  2018. me apart

  2019. for

  2020. what are

  2021. you setting

  2022. me apart

  2023. for

  2024. we're going

  2025. to spend

  2026. a few

  2027. moments

  2028. in quiet

  2029. to ask

  2030. the Holy

  2031. Spirit to

  2032. do

  2033. whatever

  2034. he wants

  2035. to do

  2036. then I'm

  2037. going to

  2038. invite Alex

  2039. to come

  2040. and feed

  2041. us in a

  2042. song

  2043. where we

  2044. can

  2045. worship

  2046. as a

  2047. response

  2048. and then I

  2049. pray that you

  2050. will leave

  2051. the door

  2052. responding to

  2053. him as

  2054. you go

  2055. let me

  2056. pray

  2057. reminded of

  2058. the words

  2059. that Dallas

  2060. Willard said

  2061. missions is

  2062. basically just

  2063. asking God

  2064. what are you

  2065. doing and

  2066. can I

  2067. join in

  2068. holy

  2069. spirit would

  2070. you set

  2071. apart all

  2072. of us

  2073. here for

  2074. your work

  2075. to go

  2076. into the

  2077. different

  2078. spheres of

  2079. this city

  2080. to do

  2081. whatever

  2082. it is

  2083. that you

  2084. ask us

  2085. to do

  2086. and give

  2087. us the

  2088. words to

  2089. say

  2090. we know

  2091. it's not

  2092. eloquent

  2093. words

  2094. we know

  2095. it's not

  2096. lofty

  2097. speech or

  2098. wisdom

  2099. it's just

  2100. the power

  2101. of the

  2102. cross

  2103. I'm convinced

  2104. there are

  2105. people in

  2106. this room

  2107. who you

  2108. have set

  2109. apart for

  2110. specific

  2111. missions

  2112. we wait

  2113. for you

  2114. but we'll

  2115. finish the

  2116. way we

  2117. started

  2118. responding to

  2119. the goodness

  2120. of God

  2121. and as we

  2122. declare how

  2123. good he is

  2124. may that be

  2125. the thing

  2126. that empowers

  2127. you

  2128. emboldens

  2129. you

  2130. encourages

  2131. you

  2132. to go

  2133. out

  2134. to share

  2135. the good

  2136. news

  2137. it's good

  2138. news

  2139. it's not

  2140. boring news

  2141. it's not

  2142. tedious news

  2143. it's not

  2144. tiring news

  2145. it's not

  2146. terrible news

  2147. it's good

  2148. news

  2149. because someone

  2150. put death

  2151. to death

  2152. someone paid

  2153. for our

  2154. debts

  2155. we're free

  2156. we're free

  2157. and it's

  2158. free

  2159. let's respond

  2160. to how good

  2161. he is

  2162. Lord thank you

  2163. thank you for

  2164. this time

  2165. we can gather

  2166. to remember

  2167. what you have

  2168. done

  2169. that we can

  2170. go anointed

  2171. filled with

  2172. your power

  2173. healed

  2174. thank you

  2175. that you're

  2176. a God

  2177. who responds

  2178. to faith

  2179. like a mustard

  2180. seed

  2181. and multiplies

  2182. it tenfold

  2183. thousandfold

  2184. let us

  2185. respond to

  2186. you in

  2187. faith

  2188. this week

  2189. with our

  2190. lives

  2191. trusting not

  2192. in ourselves

  2193. but in you

  2194. we thank you

  2195. and we pray

  2196. this in Jesus

  2197. name

  2198. amen
