  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. It's amazing how God works,

  3. !

  4. And they were the same words that we sang as we came over to Hong Kong.

  5. I mean, if you really think about those lyrics,

  6. I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.

  7. And not just believe in Jesus.

  8. We've always talked about that.

  9. There's a difference between believer of Jesus and follower of Jesus.

  10. He's called us to follow him.

  11. We believe and have eternal life and won't perish,

  12. but we should follow him.

  13. But so many of us in the church are stuck at that stage of believe him, right?

  14. 信頭和門頭和分別

  15. And so how can we be followers of Jesus?

  16. I've decided to follow him, no turning back, no turning back.

  17. And as I was praying this morning, I was looking through Acts.

  18. You know what?

  19. This whole series on Acts has been doing something to me.

  20. Because I look at the way these people are responding,

  21. and I'm just like, I'm not there.

  22. I look at Philip in Acts 8, where he goes.

  23. He's kicked out of his own home in Jerusalem.

  24. He goes to Samaria, where he shouldn't really be going,

  25. and continues to spread the good news.

  26. And then his church's ministry builds,

  27. and then boom, the Spirit says,

  28. you, go into the desert road and hang out there for a while.

  29. Meet an Ethiopian and run beside the chariot.

  30. And he just does it.

  31. He leaves his thriving ministry and he just goes.

  32. I'm like, man, I don't have that.

  33. Saul, just going on his way to drag people to prison, to kill them,

  34. ends up meeting Jesus, gets blinded,

  35. and completely does a 180 and goes the other way.

  36. Peter, in Acts 10,

  37. doesn't really want to hang out with the Gentiles.

  38. Not him personally, I guess, in some way,

  39. because he's built up that way.

  40. He's been taught all these years to stay away from those people,

  41. and yet in a prayer he says, boom,

  42. the Holy Spirit says, go, you must go and reach these people,

  43. and he does it.

  44. And to see, how they react is just so different to how I react to things.

  45. And last week I shared with you,

  46. talk about homework,

  47. and after,

  48. last week I shared with you one of my favorite books,

  49. which is the boy, the mole, the fox, the horse,

  50. and one of the quotes I gave was,

  51. one of the greatest freedoms in life is how you,

  52. anyone,

  53. react.

  54. How you react tells you where you're at.

  55. Husbands, if I may extend a little bit of sincere advice to you,

  56. how your wife reacts

  57. to the seemingly most small and trivial things,

  58. but in the most strongest kind of way,

  59. will tell you where she's at,

  60. will tell you that she's bad.

  61. Not about the thing that she's reacting to,

  62. but about many other things

  63. that she might be thinking of and remembering.

  64. How you react tells you where you're at.

  65. I find myself,

  66. Christina and I have this terminology,

  67. it's like, how big is your inner space right now?

  68. Because if your inner space is large,

  69. and you come home from work,

  70. and you have a large inner space,

  71. it means you can tolerate a lot.

  72. So you can see the toys on the floor,

  73. you can see this there,

  74. and your husband left the toothbrush on the wrong side of the sink,

  75. all these kind of things,

  76. you have a large inner space,

  77. you can tolerate it,

  78. and you can react in a kind, friendly, gracious way.

  79. But when you come home and you have a small inner space,

  80. then the smallest thing,

  81. the air conditioning not being on at the right temperature,

  82. will trigger you into a different space.

  83. How you react tells you where you're at,

  84. and thank you, Queenie.

  85. So I quoted that book last week,

  86. and then she, so kind,

  87. said that, told me about his second book,

  88. the sequel that's come out,

  89. which is The Boy, the Mole,

  90. The Fox, The Horse, and The Storm.

  91. So it's taking a lot of self-control for me

  92. to have this right here,

  93. and not want to read it immediately.

  94. But highly recommend,

  95. and if you need to know where to find it,

  96. Queenie is the person to go to.

  97. How you react tells you where you're at.

  98. How you react and how you respond to the gospel

  99. will tell you how you respond to the mission.

  100. Some of us are struggling with responding to God's call

  101. to go, to scatter, to share the good news.

  102. Why?

  103. Because I think maybe we haven't responded accordingly

  104. to the gospel itself.

  105. I think we haven't really truly understood

  106. what the gospel actually means.

  107. We haven't truly understood that this is genuinely good news.

  108. We don't realize that we are actually living in bad news,

  109. and because we don't truly understand the gospel,

  110. we're not reacting to that appropriately,

  111. and therefore we're not responding to the call

  112. of the mission of God appropriately.

  113. Does that make sense?

  114. And you see here in the book of Acts,

  115. people are constantly just reacting in a way

  116. that I look at this and go,

  117. I don't know if I'm reacting this way.

  118. Last week we talked in Acts 13 about the Holy Spirit.

  119. No one else, not some uncle with a great eyebrow idea,

  120. the Holy Spirit himself,

  121. whilst the church are praying and fasting,

  122. he says, set apart these two people to go on this mission.

  123. I don't know.

  124. If I was sat in that prayer meeting,

  125. and I heard the Holy Spirit say,

  126. these two people are going to go and do this thing,

  127. I would be like, well,

  128. that's going to be a really important thing.

  129. That thing is going to take off,

  130. and it's going to succeed,

  131. and it's going to be great.

  132. But what happens?

  133. Mixed results.

  134. Mixed results.

  135. Some people like it.

  136. Some people don't like it.

  137. Sometimes I find,

  138. even when it comes to ministry,

  139. I'm doing these things,

  140. I'm like, some people like what we do,

  141. and some people don't like what we do,

  142. and then I find myself reacting in ways that I'm like,

  143. I don't think that's how Paul and Barnabas would have reacted.

  144. That's not how Peter would have reacted.

  145. Why?

  146. Because Christ is enough for them.

  147. Nothing else.

  148. He is all they need.

  149. The question that we're going to look at today is,

  150. how are we actually reacting to different things?

  151. More specifically,

  152. I shared a little bit with our leaders last night,

  153. which is,

  154. how do we react to praise and criticism?

  155. Because in this next chapter is this fascinating thing,

  156. where within the one chapter,

  157. Paul and Barnabas are told that they are gods.

  158. And in the very next passage,

  159. they're stoned nearly to death.

  160. Isn't that crazy?

  161. It tells you a little bit about just the fickleness of the human heart,

  162. and how people could just turn on you.

  163. They'll crown you one moment,

  164. and then cancel you the next.

  165. But how do we respond to either of those things?

  166. It will tell you a lot about where you're at.

  167. How I react to different things will tell me where I'm at.

  168. And so we're going to read Acts 14.

  169. I've invited my dear friend Matthew to come and minister to us

  170. with reading the word of God to us.

  171. So can I invite you to stand for the word of the Lord?

  172. Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  173. Alright, Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  174. Now at Arconium, they entered together into the Jewish synagogue

  175. and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.

  176. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles

  177. and poisoned their minds against the brothers.

  178. So they remained for a long time,

  179. speaking boldly for the Lord,

  180. who bore witness to the word of his grace,

  181. granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

  182. But the people of the city were divided.

  183. Some sided with the Jews,

  184. and some sided with the apostles.

  185. When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and the Jews

  186. with their rulers to minister to them and to stone them,

  187. they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe,

  188. cities of Lyakonia.

  189. To the surrounding countries.

  190. And there they continued to preach the gospel.

  191. Now at Lystra, there was a man sitting who could not use his feet.

  192. He was crippled from birth and had never walked.

  193. He listened to Paul speaking,

  194. and Paul, looking intently at him,

  195. seeing that he had faith to be made well,

  196. said in a loud voice,

  197. stand upright on your feet.

  198. And he sprung up and began walking.

  199. And when the crowd saw that Paul had done,

  200. they lifted up their voices,

  201. saying in Lyconian,

  202. the gods have come down to us in the likeness of men.

  203. Barnabas, they called Zeus and Paul Hermes.

  204. But he was the chief speaker.

  205. Sorry, because he was the chief speaker.

  206. And the priest of Zeus,

  207. whose temple was at the entrance to the city,

  208. brought oxen and garland to the gates

  209. and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.

  210. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it,

  211. they tore their garments and rushed out to the crowds,

  212. crying out,

  213. Men, why are you doing these things?

  214. We are also men of like nature with you.

  215. And we bring you good news,

  216. that you should turn from these vain things to a living God,

  217. who made the heavens and the earth,

  218. the seas and all that is in them.

  219. In the past generations,

  220. he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.

  221. Yet he did not leave himself without witness.

  222. For he did good by giving you rains from heaven

  223. and fruitful seasons,

  224. satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.

  225. Even with those words,

  226. they scarcely restrained the people

  227. from offering sacrifice to them.

  228. But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium

  229. and having persuaded the crowd,

  230. they stone-palled and dragged him out of the city,

  231. supposing that he was dead.

  232. But when the disciples gathered about him,

  233. he rose up and entered the city.

  234. And on the next day,

  235. he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.

  236. When they had preached the gospel to the city,

  237. they had made disciples,

  238. many disciples,

  239. they returned to Lystra and Iconium and to Antioch,

  240. strengthening the souls of disciples,

  241. encouraging them to continue in the faith

  242. and saying that through many tribulations,

  243. we must enter the kingdom of God.

  244. And when they had appointed elders for them in every church

  245. with prayer and fasting,

  246. they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

  247. Then they passed through Pisidia

  248. and came to Pamphylia.

  249. And when they had spoken the word in Perga,

  250. they went down to Italia.

  251. And from there,

  252. they sailed to Antioch,

  253. where they had commended to the grace of God

  254. for the work that they had fulfilled.

  255. And when they arrived and gathered the church together,

  256. they declared all that the Lord has done for them

  257. and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles

  258. and they had remained no little time with the disciples.

  259. This is the word of the Lord.

  260. Praise be to God.

  261. Please take a seat.

  262. Thank you, Matthew.

  263. You did well with all those hard words.

  264. Whenever it's hard words,

  265. I always like to make sure someone else reads it for me.

  266. So you did really well.

  267. How do you react when things are going well?

  268. Like when work is going well,

  269. when someone says,

  270. hey, well done, well done.

  271. You did a really good job there.

  272. How do you feel?

  273. And when someone says,

  274. oh, it's not so good.

  275. How does it feel?

  276. Last week I talked about Acts 13.

  277. Some people were so ecstatic and happy about the sermon.

  278. They came and said,

  279. please come back.

  280. Thank you for the few of you

  281. who actually listened to my subtle cry for affirmation.

  282. Janice, I remember you.

  283. Thank you for coming to say that my sermon was good.

  284. You didn't invite the whole city to come back though.

  285. That's what I hold against you.

  286. But how do you feel when people do these kinds of things?

  287. I find it's really interesting.

  288. I mean, I'm not saying you should do this.

  289. Please don't do this.

  290. If you, a hundred of you come up to me

  291. straight after this sermon and go,

  292. well, James, that was such a good sermon.

  293. By the way, and people like J1 know this,

  294. if you come and tell me that that was a good sermon,

  295. what's the next question I'm going to ask you?

  296. Well, I was like, why did God speak to you?

  297. What did God speak to you about?

  298. Don't just come and tell me that it was good

  299. and that you liked my jokes

  300. and my passive aggressiveness.

  301. But tell me why it was good for you in terms,

  302. because the only way it is good

  303. is if God speaks to you.

  304. That's it.

  305. If you take something away from God,

  306. that's why it's a good sermon.

  307. A mentor of mine,

  308. she doesn't care when she goes to speak.

  309. She has no,

  310. she has complete disregard

  311. for how people felt it went.

  312. She doesn't even ask about it.

  313. You know, sometimes we do this.

  314. We do something,

  315. well, hey, how was it for you?

  316. And you're kind of fishing for compliments.

  317. Like I played basketball with Trevor

  318. yesterday morning

  319. and he could have come up to me and say,

  320. hey, how was it?

  321. How do you think I played?

  322. He doesn't fish for compliments

  323. because I wouldn't give him any.

  324. But we do that, right?

  325. But these guys,

  326. just zero,

  327. zero regard

  328. for how people are responding.

  329. They know that one of the greatest freedoms

  330. that we have

  331. is how we react to the gospel.

  332. But how other people respond,

  333. none of our business.

  334. None of our business.

  335. I can come here,

  336. I can preach the word of God,

  337. I can stay as faithful as I can to the text,

  338. I can speak to the people

  339. that I think is what you need to hear,

  340. and then I should be able to be at a point

  341. where I don't need any compliments,

  342. I can just let go.

  343. God has done his work,

  344. I can move on.

  345. That, though,

  346. is predicated on how I'm responding

  347. to the gospel,

  348. to the good news of who I am.

  349. In my Bible study group this week,

  350. I'm going to put him on the spot,

  351. Nathan does these great reflections

  352. when he looks at scripture.

  353. We've been going through the book of John

  354. and one of the things he said,

  355. and actually we're going to hear him

  356. speak a little bit next week,

  357. him and Jay actually,

  358. is actually he realizes

  359. sometimes he doesn't respond

  360. to Jesus' sacrifice

  361. in the most appropriate way.

  362. We kind of just take it for granted.

  363. Someone died for you, Teresa.

  364. Whoa, what?

  365. And we say, yeah, cool, cool.

  366. It's a cool story.

  367. But he actually died for us

  368. because he loved us.

  369. We didn't have to do that.

  370. He took the place on the cross

  371. where we should have been.

  372. And if you don't let that

  373. seep into your heart,

  374. then you won't really respond

  375. in the appropriate way

  376. to who Jesus is

  377. and to what he did.

  378. And you won't really live out

  379. the way that he wants you to live.

  380. These guys.

  381. So they start.

  382. They go to Iconium

  383. at verse one and two.

  384. Now at Iconium,

  385. they enter together

  386. into the Jewish synagogue.

  387. Remember, that's their MO.

  388. They go to the Jews first

  389. and then they speak.

  390. And a great number of both

  391. Jews and Greeks believed,

  392. yes, the ministry is growing.

  393. They're doing well.

  394. They're good at doing

  395. what they're doing.

  396. The ministry is growing.

  397. But then the very next verse,

  398. but the unbelieving Jews

  399. stirred up the Gentiles

  400. and poisoned their minds

  401. against the brothers.

  402. There is always,

  403. there is always opposition.

  404. As you share the gospel,

  405. there will always be people

  406. who say no.

  407. There will always be people

  408. who say I disagree.

  409. There will always be people

  410. who say I don't really care.

  411. I'm not that interested.

  412. And yet,

  413. they just keep going.

  414. It's funny.

  415. That happens.

  416. So people are being poisoned

  417. against them.

  418. So they remain for a long time.

  419. In case you haven't noticed,

  420. a long time in the book of Acts

  421. could be a long time.

  422. We're talking actually

  423. since Paul's conversion

  424. in Acts 9 to now,

  425. it's probably been about 10 years already.

  426. There's been a few chapters for us,

  427. but it's been 10 years for him.

  428. So in light of that mixed success,

  429. that mixed response,

  430. they decide we're going to stay.

  431. We're going to stay

  432. and we're going to keep teaching.

  433. But the people of the city

  434. were divided.

  435. Verse 4.

  436. Some sided with the Jews

  437. and some with the apostles.

  438. Isn't that interesting?

  439. That in a room like this,

  440. there would have been a group of people

  441. who say,

  442. I agree with what they're saying.

  443. This makes sense.

  444. And there would have been another group

  445. that would be like,

  446. nope.

  447. And actually,

  448. Greek culture at that time

  449. would be a lot of discussion

  450. and philosophical debate.

  451. So there would have been people

  452. who say,

  453. I disagree.

  454. And they're actually talking

  455. about these things.

  456. It would have been a pretty tough crowd

  457. to be in.

  458. And yet,

  459. they decide to stay

  460. continuing to engage.

  461. And then what happens

  462. after that is,

  463. well,

  464. they try to kill them.

  465. Let me just stop there

  466. for a second.

  467. As we're wondering,

  468. how do I scatter?

  469. How do I go out

  470. and go to my office

  471. and share the gospel?

  472. What happens?

  473. What's the worst that could happen

  474. is what I want to ask you.

  475. Like someone would look at you

  476. and go,

  477. oh,

  478. okay.

  479. Who was it?

  480. Shigala last week said,

  481. Shigala is just that person

  482. who talks a lot about Jesus.

  483. That's the worst that could happen

  484. most of the time.

  485. Right?

  486. That's it.

  487. These guys got stones

  488. thrown at them.

  489. Stones.

  490. Has anyone had stones

  491. being thrown at them before?

  492. Stones.

  493. And yet we're scared

  494. of the smallest thing.

  495. We're scared of just someone

  496. going,

  497. oh,

  498. you're weird.

  499. We're scared of someone

  500. saying,

  501. oh,

  502. don't talk to them.

  503. Don't invite them

  504. to that thing

  505. because they're a Christian.

  506. Happens every time

  507. when I,

  508. okay,

  509. so I admit

  510. I don't look like

  511. your typical pastor,

  512. especially in Hong Kong.

  513. I'm about 20 years

  514. too young.

  515. It's really funny.

  516. Bless her.

  517. This lady

  518. in my apartment block,

  519. we went into the lift together

  520. and she started to say,

  521. oh,

  522. what floor do you live on?

  523. I haven't seen you.

  524. I've been here 20 years

  525. and this is my first time

  526. seeing you.

  527. I'm on the second floor.

  528. She's like,

  529. oh,

  530. I don't say

  531. for people outside

  532. they don't.

  533. I'm like,

  534. she's like,

  535. oh.

  536. I was like,

  537. at ease,

  538. your sins are forgiven.

  539. I'm like,

  540. I'm like,

  541. of course,

  542. on the basketball court

  543. where I don't always

  544. play with holy

  545. and righteous people

  546. like Trevor.

  547. I play with all kinds

  548. of different people

  549. who use all kinds

  550. of different language

  551. and I've shared this all

  552. and sometimes

  553. I play with them

  554. for many years

  555. and they use

  556. many kind words

  557. and many unkind words

  558. to themselves

  559. and to everyone else

  560. and as soon as they find out

  561. I'm a pastor,

  562. I shouldn't have sworn

  563. when I was playing.

  564. I was like,

  565. it's okay,

  566. it's cool.

  567. I sometimes swear

  568. in my head

  569. and then ask

  570. for forgiveness afterwards.

  571. We can't control

  572. how people really

  573. respond to us

  574. but we can control

  575. how we respond

  576. to the gospel

  577. and there's really

  578. only one way

  579. to respond to the gospel.

  580. This is good news

  581. and I must share it

  582. with you.

  583. I don't know

  584. whether you're going

  585. to take it or not

  586. and I know

  587. because I can see

  588. the best,

  589. the most prolific

  590. church planter

  591. in the history

  592. of the church

  593. got a divided response,

  594. got a mixed response.

  595. So if we even

  596. go into our office,

  597. go into our family,

  598. go into our friendship circles

  599. and go,

  600. hey,

  601. I might even be able

  602. to only just get one person

  603. to have a decent conversation

  604. with me,

  605. then that's it.

  606. I'd encourage you

  607. that would be

  608. all that is enough.

  609. Now,

  610. after that,

  611. verse 5,

  612. when an attempt

  613. was made by both

  614. Gentiles and Jews

  615. with their rulers

  616. to mistreat them

  617. and to stone them,

  618. they learned of it

  619. and they fled.

  620. So they did leave.

  621. Sometimes it's okay to go

  622. and sometimes it's okay

  623. to stay.

  624. You see this in the book

  625. of Acts

  626. where some people

  627. are called to leave Jerusalem

  628. and some people

  629. are scattering and staying.

  630. All that really matters

  631. is actually wherever

  632. God tells you to go,

  633. you go.

  634. Now,

  635. and I did say last week

  636. that actually,

  637. more often than not,

  638. he tells you to leave

  639. your comfort zone.

  640. He rarely,

  641. rarely ever tells you,

  642. hey,

  643. just stay at home.

  644. Continue to watch Netflix.

  645. The show's really good.

  646. Stay on that couch.

  647. It's so rare.

  648. And if you've heard

  649. that call from God,

  650. please come and talk to me.

  651. That's a good call.

  652. I'd like to share

  653. in that call.

  654. But on the most part,

  655. whether it's Jerusalem

  656. or Samaria,

  657. whether it's

  658. to stay or to go,

  659. discomfort is part

  660. of the package.

  661. Just FYI.

  662. So,

  663. they leave

  664. and they go to another place.

  665. Verse 8,

  666. now at Lystra

  667. there was a man sitting

  668. who could not use his feet.

  669. That was an understatement.

  670. He was crippled from birth

  671. and had never walked.

  672. He listened to Paul speaking

  673. and Paul,

  674. looking intently at him

  675. and seeing that he had faith

  676. to be made well,

  677. said in a loud voice,

  678. stand upright

  679. on your feet.

  680. So,

  681. this has happened before.

  682. Jesus had this happen.

  683. Peter and Paul

  684. had this happen.

  685. Where there's a guy

  686. who knows

  687. of his own weakness,

  688. knows how helpless

  689. he is,

  690. is looking and going,

  691. I want that power.

  692. I need that power.

  693. That's all.

  694. That's the only thing

  695. I can hope for.

  696. And then Peter

  697. and Paul,

  698. sorry,

  699. notices and says,

  700. hey,

  701. stand up.

  702. And this miracle happens

  703. in front of everyone's eyes.

  704. And then the response

  705. is something new.

  706. So,

  707. we carry on here.

  708. And when the crowds,

  709. verse 11,

  710. saw what Paul had done,

  711. they lifted up their voices,

  712. saying in Lyconian,

  713. the gods have come down to us

  714. in the likeness of men.

  715. Barnabas,

  716. they called Zeus,

  717. and Paul,

  718. Hermes,

  719. because he was the chief speaker.

  720. And the priest of Zeus,

  721. whose temple was at the entrance

  722. of the city,

  723. brought out oxen and garlands

  724. to the gates

  725. and wanted to offer sacrifice

  726. with the crowds.

  727. Their impact,

  728. their teaching,

  729. that moment there

  730. where they brought that guy

  731. up to his feet

  732. was so incredible.

  733. Something that people

  734. had never seen before.

  735. They're like,

  736. that is a god.

  737. And they try to,

  738. they start to worship him.

  739. They get all the wild adulation.

  740. Now,

  741. there's a little bit

  742. of context here,

  743. actually.

  744. Bearing in mind,

  745. they've just stepped

  746. into a very pluralistic society.

  747. Okay?

  748. The gospel is going out.

  749. It's not in Jerusalem anymore.

  750. It's not with the Jews anymore.

  751. It's with people

  752. who believed

  753. a whole ton of different things.

  754. And one of them

  755. is just actually

  756. the Greek legend.

  757. The legend would go,

  758. and actually the people

  759. listening and seeing this

  760. would have known this,

  761. that actually Zeus and Hermes

  762. had actually become humans

  763. and walked among the people

  764. of this town.

  765. This is the legend.

  766. Okay?

  767. So they would have all known this.

  768. And that time,

  769. they all walked

  770. and no one would let them

  771. into their houses.

  772. They were not welcomed

  773. by this town,

  774. apart from one modest

  775. elderly couple.

  776. So what happened

  777. is these two gods

  778. ended up basically

  779. killing the rest

  780. of this town,

  781. but giving this couple

  782. a palace to live in.

  783. And so that's how

  784. the legend would go.

  785. So now you know

  786. that story.

  787. Now you know

  788. what they were thinking.

  789. They see these two men

  790. perform this miracle.

  791. What's your response

  792. if you were them?

  793. This is part two.

  794. This is the sequel.

  795. We best learn

  796. because we don't want to die

  797. and we really want a palace.

  798. Let's worship these two.

  799. These two.

  800. That line there,

  801. and later we'll come back to it.

  802. The gods have come down to us

  803. in the likeness of men.

  804. Sometimes when people

  805. see us doing things

  806. that are,

  807. oh, that's really impressive,

  808. we get the praise,

  809. almost the adulation

  810. that maybe even

  811. Paul and Barnabas

  812. get here.

  813. But their reaction,

  814. their reaction

  815. says everything.

  816. And I sit here and go,

  817. I don't know

  818. if I would have

  819. the same reaction.

  820. What's that reaction?

  821. Verse 14.

  822. But when the apostles,

  823. the apostles,

  824. Barnabas and Paul,

  825. heard of it,

  826. they tore their garments

  827. and rushed out

  828. into the crowd,

  829. crying out,

  830. men,

  831. why are you doing

  832. these things?

  833. So their response

  834. to this wild adulation

  835. was to tear their clothes,

  836. which,

  837. stay calm.

  838. This isn't happening today.

  839. But they would do this

  840. because they're saying,

  841. they're distressed,

  842. they're devastated.

  843. This is not the point

  844. of why we are here.

  845. You've missed the point.

  846. Can you see how precious

  847. it was for them

  848. to share only one name,

  849. the name of Jesus?

  850. And so the moment

  851. they saw that people

  852. were led astray,

  853. almost by this act,

  854. they were just devastated.

  855. They would tear their sackcloth,

  856. is the term that would

  857. be used here.

  858. And they were just

  859. completely shocked.

  860. I wonder whether actually

  861. our response

  862. when we get praised

  863. actually is nothing

  864. like this either.

  865. Sometimes when we get praised,

  866. what happens

  867. when someone tells you,

  868. when someone tells,

  869. Sam doesn't do this,

  870. he's actually

  871. a fairly humble guy.

  872. When I tell Sam,

  873. that was the best

  874. piano player, right?

  875. And then Sam

  876. just does his thing

  877. just kind of,

  878. but others are like,

  879. but we've also seen,

  880. I mean,

  881. we're all Chinese people

  882. so it's a safe space

  883. where we all play the piano.

  884. You play really well.

  885. They say,

  886. oh, you're so good

  887. on the piano.

  888. It's like,

  889. oh, no, no, no.

  890. Not really.

  891. I'm terrible.

  892. False humility.

  893. No, I'm terrible.

  894. Terrible.

  895. Only got 96% in the test.

  896. They are genuinely devastated

  897. that people had missed the point.

  898. How do we respond?

  899. And maybe if I have time

  900. at the end,

  901. I don't know if we will,

  902. I'll come up with a few tips

  903. that I've learned

  904. over the years

  905. of what we should do

  906. when we respond to praise.

  907. But for now,

  908. let's keep to the passage here.

  909. You see Paul and Barnabas,

  910. they're just deflecting.

  911. This isn't about us.

  912. Now, these are courageous people.

  913. You wouldn't think gentle

  914. and humble immediately

  915. when you would have looked

  916. to these two people

  917. because they were pretty brave

  918. to do what they do.

  919. Bearing in mind,

  920. people had just tried

  921. to stone them.

  922. Okay?

  923. So these are pretty brave

  924. and courageous people,

  925. yet there was a humility

  926. that was so fierce

  927. that was underlying.

  928. Reminds me of John the Baptist

  929. in John 3.

  930. Just the way he talks,

  931. wearing the clothes

  932. that he wore,

  933. living out in the wilderness,

  934. shouting the way

  935. he would have done.

  936. And he's like,

  937. it's not about me.

  938. He must increase.

  939. I must decrease.

  940. I'm filled with joy now

  941. because the main character

  942. is here

  943. and the main character

  944. isn't me.

  945. My joy is complete,

  946. is what John the Baptist

  947. would say.

  948. Paul and Barnabas here

  949. know that actually

  950. no human can bear

  951. the weight of the glory

  952. that is only reserved for God.

  953. Don't,

  954. do not,

  955. please do not

  956. even think that I'm God.

  957. I've met him

  958. and I was blinded by him.

  959. Don't associate me with him.

  960. I am not him.

  961. What does John the Baptist say?

  962. I can't,

  963. I'm not even allowed

  964. to untie Jesus' sandals.

  965. Is that ridiculous?

  966. When you catch sight

  967. of who God is

  968. and you react

  969. appropriately

  970. and accordingly,

  971. it will change

  972. the way you react

  973. to praise and criticism

  974. on earth.

  975. It will completely

  976. change it.

  977. And then he jumps

  978. into a sermon,

  979. a very short sermon.

  980. There's four verses,

  981. which maybe some of you

  982. are hoping mine

  983. is a very short one too.

  984. And so,

  985. actually this is a different

  986. kind of sermon though

  987. because up until now

  988. Peter's sermons

  989. and Paul's sermons

  990. were to the Jews.

  991. So what they would do

  992. is they would cite

  993. the Old Testament

  994. and they would say,

  995. hey,

  996. you guys know the scriptures.

  997. You know Psalm 2

  998. and you know Psalm 16.

  999. You know that he said

  1000. that Jesus,

  1001. that actually God,

1002. we're waiting for the Messiah

  1003. who is God's son

  1004. and he won't die

1005. and he will save us all.

1006. And so he's citing things

  1007. that they would know.

1008. But this sermon is different.

1009. This is the first time

  1010. he tells a sermon

1011. to a group of people

  1012. who don't know

  1013. the Bible,

  1014. the Old Testament.

  1015. And he goes on

  1016. a completely different tangent.

1017. He goes in a completely

  1018. different direction

1019. which tells me one thing.

1020. When you speak to people

  1021. about the gospel,

1022. you do need to speak

  1023. in the language

  1024. that they understand.

1025. You do need to speak,

  1026. most importantly,

  1027. to where you think

1028. is the heart of the problem.

  1029. As leaders yesterday,

  1030. we were talking about

1031. just the idea of false narratives

1032. that we have all experienced

  1033. in our lives,

  1034. whether from childhood,

  1035. just this one voice

1036. that we've heard someone say

1037. at some point to us

  1038. that's just been ringing

1039. in our ears this whole time,

  1040. whether it's,

  1041. I am not enough

1042. or whether I am alone,

  1043. whatever it is.

1044. We need to be able

  1045. to listen out carefully,

  1046. genuinely caring

  1047. for these people,

  1048. going,

  1049. actually,

1050. what is it that's really

  1051. holding on to you?

  1052. Paul seems to know

  1053. because he jumps

  1054. into this sermon

1055. and maybe I'll read it first

1056. and then I'll break it down afterwards.

  1057. Verse 15,

  1058. Men,

1059. why are you doing these things?

  1060. We also are men

1061. of like nature with you

1062. and we bring you good news

  1063. that you should turn

  1064. from these vain things

  1065. to a living God

  1066. who made the heaven

  1067. and the earth

  1068. and the sea

1069. and all that is in them.

  1070. In past generations,

1071. he allowed all the nations

1072. to walk in their own ways,

1073. yet he did not leave himself

  1074. without witness,

  1075. for he did good

  1076. by giving you rains

  1077. from heaven

  1078. and fruitful seasons,

  1079. satisfying your hearts

  1080. with food and gladness.

1081. Such a different kind of message

  1082. to one we've just

1083. been more accustomed to now

  1084. as we've been looking

1085. through the book of Acts

  1086. because what Paul knows

1087. he's gone into new territory here.

  1088. He's not talking

  1089. to the Jews anymore.

  1090. He's talking to a bunch

  1091. of Gentiles

1092. who believe in all kinds

  1093. of different gods.

1094. It was a pluralistic society

  1095. because it was basically

1096. anyone can believe any God

  1097. because there will be

  1098. different gods,

  1099. one for fertility,

  1100. one for farming,

  1101. one for money.

  1102. So he's saying,

  1103. hey,

  1104. don't hold on

  1105. to those things.

  1106. He's like,

  1107. why are you thinking

  1108. that I'm God?

  1109. I'm just like you.

1110. I am just like you.

1111. I am just the same as you.

1112. We are of like nature

  1113. with you

1114. and we bring you good news.

  1115. You should turn

  1116. from these vain things

  1117. to a living God.

  1118. He realized

  1119. the biggest problem

  1120. in their lives,

  1121. in their hearts,

  1122. were idols.

  1123. What's an idol?

  1124. What's an idol?

  1125. Jay,

  1126. on our call recently,

  1127. you quoted,

  1128. paraphrased Keller's quote

1129. on what an idol is.

  1130. Do you remember

  1131. what it is?

  1132. What is an idol?

  1133. It's when your mind

  1134. automatically wanders

  1135. somewhere

  1136. when you have nothing

  1137. else to think about.

1138. That thing that your mind

  1139. goes to,

  1140. that essentially

  1141. is the thing

  1142. that you care

  1143. the most about.

  1144. That is your idol.

  1145. Paul knows

1146. that they have idols here.

  1147. Why do you think

  1148. they responded to them

  1149. in such a way?

  1150. Is it because

  1151. they genuinely

  1152. wanted to worship

  1153. these two gods,

  1154. Zeus and Hermes?

  1155. No.

  1156. They wanted the things

  1157. that come from

  1158. these two gods.

1159. They wanted to not die.

1160. They wanted to not be destroyed.

  1161. They wanted the palace.

  1162. This world is driven

  1163. by idols

  1164. and he knew about

1165. the idols in those days.

  1166. I quote Keller

  1167. all the time

  1168. because Keller,

  1169. I think,

1170. is one of those pastors

  1171. in the modern day

  1172. who was so good

  1173. at speaking

  1174. into the context

  1175. of cities

  1176. and context

1177. of looking at the cities

  1178. and going,

  1179. these cities are all

  1180. made or filled

  1181. with idols.

  1182. What are the idols?

  1183. Idols are the things

  1184. that control you,

  1185. that you worship.

  1186. Now, of course,

1187. we live in a pluralistic society

  1188. here.

1189. Just go up the roads

  1190. to,

1191. what road is Union Church on?

  1192. Kennedy Road.

  1193. Has anyone been

  1194. to Union Church?

  1195. Beautiful,

  1196. beautiful building.

  1197. What's across the road

  1198. from Union Church?

  1199. The headquarters

  1200. of the Freemasons.

  1201. Another beautiful church

  1202. just down the road

  1203. that way

  1204. towards Wan Chai,

  1205. Methodist International Church,

  1206. MIC,

  1207. on Queens Road.

  1208. Queens Road.

  1209. If you keep walking

  1210. down towards Queens Road

  1211. to the end

  1212. of that Kennedy Road,

  1213. what is it?

  1214. Just this beautiful

  1215. Sikh temple.

1216. We live in a place

  1217. where people

  1218. have all these

  1219. different kinds of gods

  1220. and obvious ones

  1221. with beautiful temples

  1222. but very subtle ones

  1223. that don't have temples

  1224. but have shiny buildings

  1225. all surrounding

  1226. in Central

  1227. and Quarry Bay

  1228. and Taiku

  1229. and Kowloon Bay now.

  1230. Money.

  1231. Capitalism.

  1232. That's an idol.

  1233. Beauty

  1234. is an idol

  1235. in some cultures.

  1236. Has politics become

  1237. an idol

  1238. in some places?

  1239. These things

  1240. that our minds

  1241. just effortlessly

  1242. wander to

  1243. when we have

  1244. nothing else

  1245. on our minds.

  1246. That is your God.

  1247. That is

  1248. our God.

  1249. And Paul says,

  1250. hey,

  1251. don't hold on

  1252. to those vain things.

  1253. Why?

  1254. Because those vain things

  1255. have no...

  1256. They won't help you.

1257. But you and I both know

  1258. we love holding on

  1259. to those vain things.

  1260. They're the things

  1261. that give us comfort.

1262. They don't have to be

  1263. super sinister.

1264. You don't have to go

  1265. into a Satan

  1266. worshipping temple.

  1267. You just need to

  1268. doom scroll

  1269. on YouTube.

  1270. That's enough.

  1271. We can zoom.

  1272. We can just scroll

  1273. ourselves to death.

1274. And that is our idol.

  1275. John Calvin says

  1276. that the human heart

  1277. is a factory

  1278. for idols.

  1279. We just create them

  1280. constantly.

  1281. We churn them out.

  1282. And you see,

  1283. it's interesting here

1284. because Paul calls it out

1285. but in a really gentle,

  1286. loving,

  1287. positive kind of way.

  1288. He's saying,

  1289. hey,

  1290. don't focus on these

  1291. vain things.

  1292. They're not going to

  1293. come out any good.

  1294. And it's really interesting

  1295. because we are all

  1296. on this rat race.

  1297. We've all heard about

  1298. the rat race.

  1299. We're trying to climb

  1300. this ladder.

1301. Those of us sat here,

  1302. more than likely

  1303. is that you know

  1304. that this rat race

  1305. doesn't head anywhere.

  1306. And we see time

  1307. and time again,

  1308. people who reach

1309. the top of the ladder,

1310. they end up falling off

  1311. and they realize

  1312. nothing's there.

1313. And so it's just crushing.

  1314. And all of us

1315. at the bottom of the ladder,

  1316. we actually know this.

  1317. And yet somehow,

  1318. we subconsciously

1319. still keep climbing the ladder

  1320. because we still have

1321. those idols in our hearts.

  1322. And so you see,

  1323. Paul's saying here,

  1324. don't follow them.

1325. So in a negative way,

1326. what he's actually saying is,

  1327. hey,

  1328. there is a futility

1329. as you follow these idols.

1330. And they won't lead you anywhere.

  1331. They are vain things.

1332. But in a more positive sense,

1333. he's not just rebuking them

  1334. for their idols.

  1335. He's actually pointing them

  1336. to the living God.

  1337. And he's saying,

  1338. hey,

1339. I know you are chasing

  1340. these things

  1341. and they are vain.

1342. And I am not it.

  1343. I am not he.

  1344. But the living God.

  1345. And it's really interesting

  1346. how he basically emphasizes

  1347. this living God

1348. is he talks about something

  1349. called,

1350. what I think is called

  1351. common grace.

  1352. He's saying,

  1353. actually,

  1354. you've known this God.

1355. You have experienced this God.

  1356. Why?

  1357. Because you've experienced rain.

1358. You've lived on this earth.

1359. You are living and breathing

  1360. because of this God.

1361. The fact that you are living

1362. is because there is a living God

  1363. that is sustaining you.

  1364. He says,

1365. I have good news for you

  1366. that you should turn

  1367. from these vain things

  1368. to a living God

  1369. who made the heaven

  1370. and the earth

  1371. and the sea

1372. that is all in them.

1373. Yet he did not leave himself

  1374. without witness.

  1375. How is he proving

  1376. that he's here and he's good?

  1377. For he did good

1378. by giving you rains from heaven

  1379. and fruitful seasons,

  1380. satisfying your hearts

  1381. with food and gladness.

  1382. He's feeding you.

  1383. You are the reason

  1384. why he's alive.

  1385. Paul is pointing them

  1386. away from the futility

  1387. of idolatry,

1388. away from the vain things

  1389. that are meaningless

1390. that won't actually satisfy you.

  1391. And he's saying,

1392. there is a living God

  1393. right here,

  1394. right now,

  1395. who has been providing

  1396. for you all along.

  1397. That's a positive message.

  1398. That's the good news.

  1399. Of course,

1400. he doesn't just finish there.

  1401. He continues likely

  1402. to talk about

1403. why is it so offensive

  1404. because this good God

  1405. actually,

  1406. you talk about,

  1407. hey,

  1408. you think I'm God

1409. that came in the likeness of men?

  1410. Well,

  1411. actually,

  1412. funny you say that

  1413. because there was God.

1414. There was a moment recently

1415. where God really did come

1416. and become the likeness of men.

  1417. He really did move

  1418. into our neighborhood

1419. and he really did come

  1420. and show you

1421. how good he truly is.

  1422. And his redemptive work

  1423. reaches its divine climax

  1424. in Jesus.

  1425. That's the good news.

1426. That is the good news.

  1427. He reminds them

  1428. of his humanity,

  1429. actually.

  1430. He said,

  1431. hey,

  1432. I'm just like you.

1433. You may have just seen me

  1434. do this

  1435. when I'm actually

  1436. just like you.

1437. He actually appeals to them

  1438. saying,

  1439. hey,

  1440. you and I

  1441. are not different.

  1442. I think that's beautiful

1443. considering what he just did.

  1444. He's like,

  1445. we're the same.

1446. You could do this too

  1447. because it's not me

  1448. that's doing it.

  1449. It's the power

  1450. that's working through me

  1451. that's doing it.

  1452. How exciting is that?

  1453. So he reminds them

  1454. of common grace.

  1455. He shows them humility.

  1456. He calls them away

  1457. from the vain gods

  1458. to this living God.

  1459. And you think,

  1460. oh,

  1461. what a great message,

  1462. Paul.

  1463. They finally get it.

  1464. And actually,

  1465. Luke says here,

  1466. verse 18,

  1467. even with these words,

  1468. they scarcely restrain

  1469. the people from offering

  1470. sacrifice to them.

  1471. So basically,

  1472. they're saying,

  1473. okay,

  1474. okay,

  1475. cool,

  1476. cool,

  1477. cool.

  1478. I get it.

  1479. I get it.

  1480. I get it.

  1481. Okay,

  1482. is this God here?

1483. He's the one who gives,

  1484. he's the reason why we're alive.

  1485. That's good.

  1486. But actually,

1487. we still want to worship you.

1488. Would you take my yuju

1489. and let me worship you?

1490. And we're kind of just

  1491. sat there going,

  1492. well,

  1493. guys,

1494. how stupid can you get?

1495. He's made it so clear to you

  1496. that he's not God.

1497. He's made it so clear to you

  1498. what grace really is.

1499. And he's made it so clear to you

  1500. about who Jesus is.

  1501. And yet,

  1502. here you are still

  1503. worshiping him,

1504. still trying to appease them,

  1505. trying to give them

  1506. everything that you have

1507. so that they will give you

  1508. even more,

  1509. like that old,

  1510. modest couple

  1511. in the legend.

  1512. And just before

1513. I go too far in going,

  1514. they are so stupid,

1515. I'll ask you the same question.

  1516. How stupid are you?

1517. How long have you been

  1518. in church

  1519. listening to the gospel

  1520. of Jesus?

  1521. The good news

  1522. of grace

  1523. that is undeserved,

  1524. that there is nothing

1525. that you need to do

1526. to make God love you more.

  1527. And there is nothing

  1528. that you can do

  1529. that will cause God

  1530. to love you less.

  1531. And yet,

  1532. you and I,

  1533. still trapped

  1534. in the same places

  1535. of bondage

  1536. where we are thinking

1537. we have to prove ourselves,

  1538. we have to show

1539. that we are good Christians,

1540. when there is no such thing

  1541. as a good Christian,

  1542. only a Christian

  1543. who recognizes

  1544. that they are bad

1545. and they are in need

  1546. of a savior.

1547. How long have we sat

  1548. and listened to messages

  1549. about the gospel,

  1550. the good news,

1551. but not really let it

  1552. seep into our hearts?

1553. And so we still focus

1554. on how do we become better?

1555. How do we serve more?

1556. How do we become enough?

  1557. How do we belong?

1558. Do you still have that?

  1559. I still have that,

  1560. which makes me

  1561. just as stupid

  1562. as these people here.

  1563. Because I am still

  1564. trying to appease God

  1565. with my sacrifices.

  1566. And God is saying,

  1567. it is not about

  1568. your sacrifices.

1569. It is like my daughter

  1570. Alicia

  1571. continually trying

  1572. to draw me

  1573. the best picture

  1574. that she can draw.

  1575. She is unable

  1576. to draw me

  1577. a picture

1578. that I will not like.

  1579. Parents,

  1580. do you agree?

  1581. when your kids

  1582. come up to you

  1583. with a picture

1584. that you have no idea

  1585. what it is?

  1586. Oh,

  1587. so beautiful.

  1588. What is it?

  1589. But am I proud?

  1590. Yes.

  1591. Thomas Merton says,

  1592. the very desire

  1593. to please God

  1594. is what pleases God.

  1595. You being willing

  1596. to believe in Him.

  1597. That God,

  1598. I am nothing.

  1599. That in you,

  1600. I have everything.

1601. That is the only thing

  1602. that we need.

1603. That is the only message

1604. He wants to tell us

1605. and yet time and time again

  1606. we keep thinking,

  1607. what can I do?

  1608. What can I do

  1609. to be better?

  1610. Or,

1611. I can never be good enough.

1612. I think it is just

  1613. the same here.

  1614. So then,

  1615. they move on.

  1616. Verse 19,

1617. but Jews came from Antioch,

  1618. so things are going

  1619. kind of well,

  1620. I guess,

  1621. but the people

1622. still aren't getting the point.

  1623. But then,

  1624. it gets worse.

  1625. Verse 19,

1626. but the Jews came from Antioch

  1627. and Iconium

  1628. and having persuaded

  1629. the crowds,

  1630. they stoned Paul

  1631. and dragged him out

  1632. of the city,

1633. supposing that he was dead.

  1634. I mean,

  1635. that's just such a casual line

  1636. there,

  1637. verse 19,

  1638. supposing he was dead.

  1639. That means,

1640. he was left for dead.

  1641. That means the stones

  1642. actually hit him.

  1643. And that means

  1644. he's actually lying there

  1645. and they thought,

  1646. okay,

  1647. we've done it,

  1648. we've killed him.

  1649. Isn't the crowds,

  1650. seriously,

  1651. at this point,

  1652. you're like,

  1653. okay,

1654. some of you really got it

1655. and then another of you

  1656. could just be turned

  1657. just in an instant,

  1658. going from crowding

  1659. to cancelling

  1660. just like that

  1661. and hurling stones.

  1662. But what's Paul's reaction

  1663. to this near-death experience?

  1664. It's just as ridiculous

  1665. as him being told

  1666. that he's a god.

  1667. Verse 20,

1668. so they suppose he was dead,

  1669. his disciples,

  1670. well,

  1671. they all drag him

  1672. out of the city.

  1673. Verse 20,

  1674. but when the disciples

  1675. gathered about him,

  1676. he rose up

  1677. and entered the city.

  1678. Hold up.

  1679. Paul,

1680. they tried to kill you,

1681. you're lying on the floor,

  1682. bruised and bleeding,

1683. they drag you out of the city,

1684. we're trying to hang out

  1685. and just see

  1686. if you're still alive.

1687. By some kind of miracle

1688. is all I can really assume here.

  1689. At some point,

1690. he manages to come back

  1691. to consciousness,

  1692. stands back up

1693. and the next thing you do,

  1694. are you kidding me?

1695. Is you're going to run

1696. straight back into the city

1697. and continue to spread the gospel.

1698. In face of the most extreme

  1699. kind of persecution

  1700. and criticism,

  1701. he runs straight back

  1702. to the problem,

1703. which is the exact opposite

1704. of what I would do.

1705. If you come and say,

  1706. hey James,

  1707. that message wasn't

  1708. really too good.

1709. Yeah, I thought this was wrong,

  1710. this was wrong,

  1711. this was wrong.

1712. Yeah, I'm probably going to

1713. try and avoid you next week.

  1714. I'm probably going to,

  1715. I can see them.

1716. Paul runs straight back in

  1717. to the place

1718. that tried to kill him.

  1719. How we respond

1720. tells us where we're at.

1721. How we respond to criticism

1722. tells us where we're at.

1723. How we respond to praise

  1724. and compliments

1725. tell us where we're at.

1726. And we've all been there,

  1727. probably,

  1728. where a hundred people

1729. tell you that you're really good,

  1730. but all it takes

  1731. is that one person

  1732. to say,

  1733. meh.

  1734. They don't even have

  1735. to say anything.

  1736. And suddenly you think

1737. of all these other things,

  1738. they're things that they're

1739. trying to be critical of,

  1740. right?

  1741. And it ruins everything

  1742. and you forget

1743. the 100 compliments you get

  1744. because you're only

  1745. focusing on that one.

  1746. And that's what

  1747. Tim Keller says,

1748. if you live for praise,

1749. you will die from criticism.

1750. If you live for praise,

1751. you will die from criticism.

  1752. If you let praise

  1753. inflate you,

  1754. when criticism comes,

  1755. it will crush you

1756. and it will tell you

  1757. what your idol is.

  1758. Your idol is self-worth.

  1759. If everyone tells you,

1760. every time someone tells you

1761. something that you've done well,

  1762. it puffs you up,

  1763. it makes you think,

  1764. I am so worthy.

  1765. I am as a God.

  1766. But the moment

  1767. someone tells you

  1768. something bad,

  1769. you're like,

  1770. I am worthless.

1771. If you live for praise,

  1772. you will die

  1773. from criticism.

  1774. But if you have

  1775. the heart of Paul

  1776. and Barnabas,

  1777. despite the praise,

  1778. despite the criticism,

1779. they run straight back in

  1780. to do whatever

1781. the Lord called them to do.

  1782. That is it.

  1783. There's something else

1784. that I find really interesting here

  1785. and those of you

1786. who may be in ministry,

1787. I know that Young Life

1788. talks a lot about this,

1789. is how do we raise leaders?

1790. How do we have it

1791. so that it's not just

  1792. about us doing everything?

  1793. And it's fascinating

1794. because in the next few verses,

  1795. you see that actually

1796. one of Paul's greatest traits

  1797. isn't actually his preaching,

  1798. isn't actually his courage.

1799. It's the way he raises

  1800. up people around him.

  1801. There are disciples

  1802. that are surrounding him,

  1803. gathered about him.

1804. He rose up and entered the city.

  1805. And by the way,

1806. if I was one of those people,

  1807. I'll be saying,

1808. Paul, let's not do that again.

1809. Like some of those stones

1810. that they threw at you,

  1811. they nearly hit me.

1812. Can we not go back in there?

1813. Let's just move to the next place,

1814. just like we did earlier

  1815. in the chapter.

  1816. Let's show people

  1817. that it's responsible

  1818. to stay safe.

  1819. I would have been

  1820. one of those people.

  1821. I'd say,

  1822. that's not a good idea.

1823. And yet he raises disciples

1824. who just had so much faith,

1825. they were willing to follow.

  1826. Verse 21,

1827. and when they had preached

1828. the gospel to that city

1829. and had made many disciples,

  1830. note,

1831. they had made many disciples,

  1832. not disciples of Paul

  1833. or Barnabas,

  1834. but disciples of Jesus.

  1835. More and more people

  1836. were willing

  1837. to not just believe,

  1838. but to follow

1839. in the footsteps of Jesus.

  1840. Now,

  1841. of course,

  1842. following Jesus is hard,

  1843. which is why

  1844. at another point

  1845. in 1 Corinthians 11,

  1846. Paul says,

  1847. hey,

  1848. imitate me

  1849. as I imitate Christ.

1850. If you can't quite see Jesus yet,

  1851. like I've seen him,

  1852. don't worry.

  1853. Look at me.

1854. Because I am so confident

1855. that in my own gaze

  1856. is focused on him.

  1857. If you follow me,

1858. you'll end up following Christ.

  1859. How beautiful is that?

1860. And so you have these leaders

  1861. that he raises

  1862. who are then strengthened.

  1863. So he goes there

  1864. and he goes to,

  1865. returns to Lystra

  1866. and to Iconium

  1867. and to Antioch

1868. and then he does a few things.

  1869. Leadership development

  1870. right here.

  1871. One,

  1872. he strengthens the souls

  1873. of his disciples.

  1874. He encourages them

  1875. in their faith.

  1876. He reminds them

  1877. that actually,

1878. in order to get into the kingdom,

  1879. there will be trouble.

1880. So please don't be shocked

1881. when you spread the gospel

  1882. because just like me,

  1883. you might be stoned

1884. or at the very least,

1885. you will have divided response.

  1886. That's okay.

  1887. And then he appoints

  1888. and commits elders

1889. and he prays for these people

  1890. because he realizes

  1891. his job

  1892. is not to build

  1893. his whole empire.

1894. His job is to simply

1895. do whatever the Spirit asks him

1896. and what the Spirit is doing

  1897. is raising people.

  1898. That's our prayer here.

  1899. That's our prayer

  1900. and I've cited a few times

1901. what we spent some time

1902. as a small group of leaders

  1903. yesterday.

  1904. That's,

  1905. that's the heart.

1906. That you wouldn't come in here

  1907. week in,

  1908. week out

  1909. and you think,

  1910. okay,

1911. well I'm here to just

  1912. hear a sermon,

  1913. sing a few songs

  1914. and then leave.

  1915. But that actually

  1916. you would be ignited

1917. and that I could disappear

1918. and then you would do

1919. whatever God's called you to do.

1920. And if this closes down tomorrow

  1921. but you have received

  1922. from the Lord

  1923. what he's,

  1924. the next marching orders,

  1925. the next instruction,

  1926. that that is,

  1927. that is it.

  1928. That's all that's needed.

1929. Christ says enough for me.

  1930. everything I need

  1931. is in you.

  1932. I have decided

  1933. to follow Jesus.

  1934. No turning back.

  1935. The cross before me.

  1936. The world behind me.

  1937. And so he appoints

  1938. these leaders

  1939. and he goes.

1940. But just for a second there,

  1941. just imagine the emotions

  1942. of the people

1943. who are getting prayed for.

  1944. These leaders

  1945. who have chosen

  1946. to follow Paul.

  1947. They know

1948. that he was just stoned

  1949. and left for dead.

  1950. at some point

  1951. they'll know

  1952. that actually

  1953. their leader

  1954. has been killed.

  1955. Just imagine this.

  1956. Imagine here,

  1957. here we are living

  1958. in a place

  1959. where actually

  1960. you being here

  1961. is actually

  1962. quite dangerous.

  1963. And imagine then,

  1964. I say imagine

1965. but I also want us

  1966. to know

  1967. deep in our hearts

  1968. and souls

  1969. that this is happening

1970. in places around the world.

  1971. Okay?

  1972. So this is not

  1973. just a hypothetical

  1974. mind exercise.

  1975. This is actually happening.

  1976. Imagine you've been coming

  1977. week in, week out

  1978. and you're wondering

1979. okay, I believe in Jesus.

  1980. I'm going to try

  1981. and follow him.

  1982. And the next week

  1983. you show up

  1984. and I'm not here

  1985. because the authorities

  1986. have taken me away

  1987. and I'm actually,

  1988. I've gone.

1989. What's your next reaction then?

  1990. Well you,

1991. I've not passed away yet.

  1992. Maybe I'm in prison

  1993. and I'm stoned

1994. and I'm not as good looking

  1995. as I currently am.

  1996. And then we're like

  1997. we need new leaders.

  1998. In that moment

  1999. what's your response?

  2000. It would be

  2001. completely understandable

2002. if they've taken him down

2003. like I'm going to lay low.

  2004. Actually I,

  2005. you know what,

  2006. I feel the Lord

2007. calling me back to my couch

2008. and then I'll do church online.

2009. But imagine some of you say

  2010. alright,

  2011. the church needs leaders,

  2012. I'm up.

  2013. Imagine Danny saying

  2014. okay, well

2015. I guess James is gone now,

  2016. I'll do it.

2017. Imagine how Grace would feel.

2018. Imagine what he has to go through

  2019. regarding Grace and Audrey.

  2020. the courage.

  2021. I don't think we're anywhere near.

2022. As I said at the beginning,

2023. I look at the book of Acts

  2024. and I'm like

  2025. I don't know if I'm anywhere close

2026. to how these people are reacting.

2027. And I pray in my heart

  2028. that I would respond

2029. to the good news of Jesus

  2030. in the appropriate way.

  2031. Because these people

  2032. clearly are.

2033. So I'll finish here with this.

  2034. What's your biggest idol?

2035. It might not to be

  2036. explicitly

  2037. I want to be a God.

  2038. With that said,

2039. are you trying to be

2040. the God of your own life?

  2041. Isn't that what really

2042. Adam and Eve were doing?

2043. Did he really say that?

  2044. Why don't you just

  2045. take over the reins?

2046. Why don't you have the apple

  2047. and then you'll know

  2048. what's best?

  2049. Isn't that essentially

  2050. the original sin of

2051. I want to be God?

  2052. I want to know

  2053. as God knows.

  2054. Isn't that

  2055. the first mistake?

2056. Isn't that the original sin?

2057. Isn't that what we carry

2058. when we go to work

  2059. and you say

2060. I want to try and keep

  2061. my job.

2062. I want to try and impress

  2063. my boss.

  2064. If we're being honest

2065. we're just trying to take

2066. control of our own lives.

2067. If we're being very honest

2068. we're just trying to be

  2069. God.

  2070. God.

  2071. So I lovingly

  2072. hopefully gently

  2073. call you out

  2074. like Paul did here

  2075. with the people

  2076. that he knew.

  2077. Empty yourself

  2078. of those vain things.

  2079. Cue the spooky music

  2080. because this is important.

  2081. Who is your God?

  2082. I think there are

2083. idols in each of our hearts

2084. that we need to surrender.

  2085. Most of that

2086. might be to do with

  2087. how addicted to praise

  2088. we are

  2089. and how crushed

  2090. by criticism we get.

  2091. John Piper says this

2092. and I love this quote

  2093. When you're praised

  2094. let it pass through

  2095. you to God.

  2096. When you're criticised

  2097. let it pass through

  2098. God to you.

  2099. When you're praised

  2100. let it pass through

  2101. you to God.

  2102. I'm saying

  2103. if you praise me

2104. this all goes to God.

2105. I boast in only one thing

  2106. I'm only alive

  2107. because of him.

  2108. it's all God.

2109. But when you are criticised

  2110. let it pass through

  2111. God to you.

2112. What does that even mean?

  2113. What that means

  2114. is remember the cross.

  2115. Remember the cross.

  2116. Remember the work

  2117. of Jesus.

2118. The cross sets you free

2119. from the approval of man.

  2120. Galatians 1.10

2121. It sets you free from it

  2122. because you realise

  2123. someone died

  2124. in your place.

2125. You realise there was one

  2126. who did come.

2127. A God who did come

2128. in the likeness of man

  2129. and took our place

  2130. on the cross.

2131. And so when we get

  2132. criticism

  2133. we can go straight

  2134. to the cross

  2135. and go he did

  2136. he experienced worse.

  2137. It allows us

  2138. that we can take

  2139. any offence

  2140. from anyone

  2141. because Jesus

  2142. took on the ultimate

  2143. offence for us.

  2144. That's what it means.

  2145. So you won't be

  2146. crushed by criticism

  2147. because you will let

  2148. that flow through

  2149. the cross to you.

2150. And when you get praise

  2151. you'll just pass it

  2152. straight through

  2153. to God.

  2154. Let the cross

  2155. be the thing

  2156. that anchors us.

  2157. When we're praised

  2158. remember the cross

  2159. and his grace.

  2160. When we're criticised

  2161. you swap your shame

  2162. with the crown

  2163. that is now yours

  2164. with the robe

  2165. that is now yours

  2166. because of what

  2167. he did for you.

2168. So now you are not

  2169. an orphan.

  2170. You are not isolated.

  2171. You are not alone.

  2172. You are a co-heir

  2173. with Christ

  2174. member of the household

  2175. of God.

  2176. That changes.

  2177. I challenge you

  2178. this week

  2179. whenever you get praise

  2180. check your heart

  2181. how am I reacting

  2182. to this

  2183. because that will

  2184. tell you where

  2185. you're at.

  2186. And then don't feel

  2187. guilty of where

  2188. you're at

  2189. if you're loving

  2190. the praise

  2191. and just acknowledge

  2192. okay whoa

  2193. God I have that

  2194. in me.

  2195. When someone

  2196. compliments me

  2197. I get inflated.

  2198. Acknowledge that

  2199. and go okay

  2200. but I'm going to

  2201. try and pass it

  2202. through to you.

  2203. And then it will

  2204. be really fun

  2205. when you get

  2206. criticised

  2207. when you can

  2208. do the same

  2209. thing.

  2210. When you can

  2211. let it pass

  2212. through God

  2213. to you

  2214. you can't

  2215. put shame

  2216. on me.

  2217. You can't

  2218. put guilt

  2219. on me.

  2220. You can't

  2221. strike fear

  2222. into me

  2223. because the cross

  2224. already dealt

  2225. with all of that.

  2226. How you react

  2227. to praise

  2228. and criticism

  2229. will tell you

  2230. where you are at.

  2231. The idols

  2232. that these people

  2233. were holding on to

  2234. demanded everything

  2235. but would give

  2236. nothing in return

  2237. and yet we have

  2238. God the living

  2239. God who gave

  2240. everything to us.

  2241. That's the difference.

  2242. That's why he says

  2243. worship me.

  2244. Don't worship

  2245. money because

  2246. that will control

  2247. you and corrupt

  2248. you.

  2249. Worship me

  2250. and I will

  2251. complete you.

  2252. is what he's

  2253. saying.

  2254. So would we

  2255. come now

  2256. before him

  2257. and say

  2258. God

  2259. I'll trade you.

  2260. I'll give you

  2261. my empty

  2262. vein

  2263. idols

  2264. and living

  2265. God

  2266. Holy Spirit

  2267. would you

  2268. come straight

  2269. through

  2270. and fill

  2271. me.

  2272. Fill

  2273. me with

  2274. courage.

  2275. Fill

  2276. me with

  2277. faith

  2278. that you

  2279. truly are

  2280. living

  2281. that I am

  2282. sat here

  2283. because of

  2284. your grace

  2285. because of

  2286. what you

  2287. did on

  2288. the cross

  2289. for me.

  2290. And so

  2291. actually

  2292. whether it's

  2293. praise or

  2294. criticism

  2295. it really

  2296. matters not.

  2297. There's only

  2298. one name

  2299. that matters.

  2300. The name

  2301. of Jesus.

  2302. A few

  2303. quick tips

  2304. before we

  2305. respond

  2306. in worship.

  2307. If you're in

  2308. that space

  2309. you'll get

  2310. I struggle

  2311. with praise

  2312. and I struggle

  2313. with criticism.

  2314. Just a few

  2315. quick things

  2316. that I think

  2317. have really

  2318. helped me.

  2319. First of all

  2320. confession.

  2321. These are

  2322. not new

  2323. things by

  2324. the way.

  2325. Confession.

  2326. If you're

  2327. able to

  2328. even articulate

  2329. that out

  2330. and say

  2331. that's the

  2332. thing that's

  2333. holding on

  2334. to me.

  2335. So when

  2336. someone

  2337. criticizes

  2338. you and

  2339. you're like

  2340. oh I've

  2341. got all

  2342. these feelings

  2343. and if

  2344. you say

  2345. I realize

  2346. what this

  2347. is.

  2348. I'm

  2349. actually

  2350. trying to

  2351. seek the

  2352. approval

  2353. of this

  2354. person.

  2355. God I

  2356. repent of

  2357. that.

  2358. I surrender

  2359. that.

  2360. That's

  2361. huge.

  2362. And find

  2363. someone to

  2364. deal with.

  2365. That's even

  2366. better.

  2367. The book

  2368. of James

  2369. says confess

  2370. Your sins

  2371. And be

  2372. healed from

  2373. that.

  2374. So you

  2375. no longer

  2376. be under

  2377. that bondage

  2378. of trying

  2379. to appease

  2380. that person.

  2381. That's number

  2382. one.

  2383. Number two

  2384. is solitude.

  2385. This doesn't

  2386. seem to be a

  2387. direct link

  2388. but I promise

  2389. you I swear

  2390. it is.

  2391. And I

  2392. quote this

  2393. all the time

  2394. there's a

  2395. French philosopher

  2396. Pascal who

  2397. says all

  2398. of humanity's

  2399. problems come

  2400. from man's

  2401. inability to

  2402. be alone

  2403. in a room

  2404. on their

  2405. own.

  2406. What does

  2407. he mean?

  2408. When you

  2409. are alone

  2410. on your

  2411. own

  2412. you

  2413. actually

  2414. shrink

  2415. back to

  2416. the

  2417. right

  2418. size

  2419. or you

  2420. come back

  2421. up to

  2422. the right

  2423. size.

  2424. When you

  2425. sit alone

  2426. and you

  2427. sit under

  2428. the weight

  2429. of who

  2430. God is

  2431. if you

  2432. have any

  2433. pride

  2434. from the

  2435. praise that

  2436. you've had

  2437. you will

  2438. shrink back

  2439. to the

  2440. right size

  2441. there's no

  2442. other voices

  2443. there's no

  2444. other noise

  2445. get yourself

  2446. into that

  2447. place where

  2448. I'm like

  2449. I have

  2450. nothing else

  2451. that I

  2452. care for

  2453. God

  2454. apart from

  2455. you

  2456. I promise

  2457. you that

  2458. will shrink

  2459. you back

  2460. to the

  2461. right size

  2462. that helps

  2463. me

  2464. solitude

  2465. and if

  2466. you're

  2467. struggling

  2468. not with

  2469. pride

  2470. but maybe

  2471. of insecurity

  2472. even though

  2473. last week

  2474. I said

  2475. they're kind

  2476. of the

  2477. same

  2478. thing

  2479. go into

  2480. that

  2481. solitude

  2482. and be

  2483. with God

  2484. and say

  2485. God

  2486. let me

  2487. only hear

  2488. your voice

  2489. may you

  2490. be the

  2491. only one

  2492. that's

  2493. enough

  2494. for me

  2495. confession

  2496. solitude

  2497. and

  2498. Sabbath

  2499. rest

  2500. those of

  2501. you who

  2502. struggle

  2503. with rest

  2504. it's so

  2505. so important

  2506. remember

  2507. rest

  2508. the

  2509. Sabbath

  2510. is not

  2511. reward

  2512. for finishing

  2513. work

  2514. that's not

  2515. the rest

  2516. the rest

  2517. the real rest

  2518. is rescuing

  2519. from unfinished

  2520. work

  2521. so many of us

  2522. I will rest

  2523. only when I die

  2524. I will rest

  2525. only when the job

  2526. is completed

  2527. that's not the rest

  2528. that God wants

  2529. for you

  2530. the rest that God

  2531. wants for you

  2532. is that he would

  2533. rescue you from

  2534. the unfinished

  2535. work

  2536. recognizing that

  2537. actually you will

  2538. never finish the

  2539. work

  2540. there was only

  2541. one who

  2542. finished the

  2543. work

  2544. so would

  2545. you pull

  2546. yourself

  2547. away from

  2548. that and

  2549. stop

  2550. because if

  2551. we're honest

  2552. when we say

  2553. we're busy

  2554. when we say

  2555. we can't

  2556. stop

  2557. it's because

  2558. we're trying

  2559. to work

  2560. for the

  2561. approval

  2562. of man

  2563. we'll work

  2564. ourselves to

  2565. the ground

  2566. to please

  2567. our boss

  2568. we will

  2569. struggle to

  2570. rest because

  2571. we're trying

  2572. to show our

  2573. parents that

  2574. we're hard

  2575. working

  2576. our idol

  2577. shows up

  2578. once and

  2579. again

  2580. I'm going to

  2581. spend just a few

  2582. moments now

  2583. I'll invite the

  2584. team to come

  2585. back up

  2586. what idols

  2587. do you have

  2588. and I'll

  2589. spend this

  2590. time asking

  2591. myself

  2592. what idols

  2593. do I have

  2594. I look at

  2595. my life

  2596. I look at

  2597. how I

  2598. if you still

  2599. don't really

  2600. quite know

  2601. what your

  2602. idols are

  2603. again

  2604. how you

  2605. react

  2606. to things

  2607. will tell

  2608. you where

  2609. you're at

  2610. how do you

  2611. react when

  2612. things go

  2613. well

  2614. how do you

  2615. react when

  2616. things do

  2617. not go

  2618. well

  2619. that will

  2620. tell you

  2621. exactly

  2622. that is the

  2623. most honest

  2624. way to

  2625. assess where

  2626. you're at

  2627. when you

  2628. lose something

  2629. that you

  2630. you've been

  2631. caring for

  2632. when the

  2633. thing that

  2634. you're holding

  2635. on to

  2636. gets

  2637. threatened

  2638. pull on

  2639. that thread

  2640. and you'll

  2641. find your

  2642. idol

  2643. continue to

  2644. pull on

  2645. it more

  2646. and you'll

  2647. see that

  2648. it is

  2649. vain

  2650. you'll

  2651. see that

  2652. it is

  2653. empty

  2654. you'll

  2655. see that

  2656. it is

  2657. meaningless

  2658. and then

  2659. point yourself

  2660. back to

  2661. the grace

  2662. of God

  2663. the goodness

  2664. of God

  2665. the one

  2666. who's

  2667. provided

  2668. for you

  2669. since the

  2670. moment

  2671. you were

  2672. born

  2673. because

  2674. he is

  2675. good

  2676. he is

  2677. living

  2678. and he

  2679. completes

  2680. us

  2681. and he

  2682. is the

  2683. only

  2684. name

  2685. the only

  2686. voice

  2687. the only

  2688. one

  2689. that

  2690. matters

  2691. Christ

  2692. is

  2693. enough

  2694. there is

  2695. no other

  2696. name

  2697. let's

  2698. pray

  2699. Jesus

  2700. we come

  2701. before you

  2702. the living

  2703. God

  2704. the only

  2705. God

  2706. and declare

  2707. that there

  2708. is no

  2709. other name

  2710. because

  2711. no one

  2712. else

  2713. did

  2714. what

  2715. you

  2716. did

  2717. no one

  2718. else

  2719. of divine

  2720. nature

  2721. emptied

  2722. themselves

  2723. becoming

  2724. the

  2725. likeness

  2726. of men

  2727. and being

  2728. found in

  2729. human

  2730. form

  2731. humbled

  2732. yourself

  2733. even to

  2734. the point

  2735. of death

  2736. even death

  2737. on the

  2738. cross

  2739. therefore

  2740. there is

  2741. now no

  2742. other name

  2743. in heaven

  2744. and on

  2745. earth

  2746. and we

  2747. know that

  2748. one day

  2749. every knee

  2750. will bow

  2751. and every

  2752. tongue

  2753. will confess

  2754. at that

  2755. name

  2756. because you

  2757. did what

  2758. no one

  2759. else could

  2760. do

  2761. you

  2762. defeated

  2763. death

  2764. you

  2765. paid the

  2766. price

  2767. and so

  2768. we swap

  2769. our

  2770. vain

  2771. idols

  2772. we swap

  2773. our

  2774. yearning

  2775. for the

  2776. approval

  2777. of man

  2778. and in

  2779. exchange

  2780. we ask

  2781. for your

  2782. approval

  2783. and just

  2784. even as I

  2785. say that

  2786. I'm reminded

  2787. before Jesus

  2788. did a single

  2789. thing

  2790. God

  2791. you said

  2792. this is my

  2793. son with

  2794. whom I

  2795. am well

  2796. pleased

  2797. and what

  2798. is true

  2799. of Jesus

  2800. is true

  2801. of us

  2802. some trust

  2803. in horses

  2804. some trust

  2805. in chariots

  2806. some trust

  2807. in work

  2808. some trust

  2809. in connections

  2810. but as for

  2811. us

  2812. we trust

  2813. in the name

  2814. of Jesus

  2815. Amen.
