  1. You know,

  2. two times a year people show up for church in mass,

  3. right? That's September when the kids go back to school because

  4. everybody's getting back on schedule.

  5. And January when everybody's making their revolutions.

  6. Okay, so there you go.

  7. So we need some parking team folks,

  8. if you can check out the Next Steps area.

  9. And all this year,

  10. I want everybody that gathers at least some point in the next year to

  11. check out Next steps,

  12. whether it's at the counter out there or by tapping the chair or getting

  13. on the webpage or the app or whatever.

  14. Check out Next Steps and find out all the things that are going on and

  15. get plugged into these things.

  16. Because today's message is really about that.

  17. It's about the fact that we are the body of Christ.

  18. We call ourselves the gathering.

  19. And we gather for the purpose of worship.

  20. We gather for the purpose of,

  21. of all that worship means,

  22. which is prayer,

  23. Bible study,

  24. fellowship, loving each other,

  25. loving Jesus together,

  26. all of the things that the body of Christ is supposed to be in this world

  27. that God has provided for us.

  28. One other announcement though is that time change,

  29. and I don't mean daylight saving times,

  30. but gathering worship time change takes place in February.

  31. We will shift to an 8:00,

  32. 9:30, 11:00 time frame.

  33. So if you're a part of this gathering,

  34. come 10 minutes early.

  35. If you're part of the next gathering,

  36. come five minutes late.

  37. If you're part of the next gathering,

  38. it's going to take you 20 minutes.

  39. Alright.

  40. But anyway,

  41. hopefully this will allow us to get parking better adjusted and filling

  42. and unfilling children's classrooms and youth stuff and all those kind of

  43. things. Just gives us some transition time.

  44. Alright, so let me ask this question.

  45. Who is the author of Relationship Jesus?

  46. Sort of God.

  47. Thank you.

  48. You got one third of it right.

  49. No, I'm just kidding.

  50. But God is the author of relationship.

  51. God created Adam.

  52. And the implication of Genesis is that God spent the cool of the day with

  53. Adam in the garden.

  54. And he says this,

  55. this creation is for you to have dominion over.

  56. And there's trees everywhere and food everywhere.

  57. But don't eat that one,

  58. because if you do,

  59. you'll die.

  60. And as long as you obey,

  61. you'll be fine.

  62. Well, Adam failed,

  63. right? Adam's the one that inaugurated,

  64. initiated the failure of mankind's relationship with God.

  65. And therefore sin interrupts our relationship with God.

  66. And so God has provided for our relationship with him through the shed

  67. blood of Jesus Christ.

  68. We have salvation,

  69. redemption, relationship with God.

  70. Because Christ died on the cross,

  71. because our sins are Forgiven right now.

  72. I love it that you're here this morning.

  73. I'm excited about it.

  74. I wasn't here last week,

  75. obviously. And as we end the year,

  76. you know,

  77. everybody's things are changing.

  78. And for some people,

  79. things change a lot,

  80. and some people,

  81. things change a little.

  82. And I'm looking at the new year.

  83. And usually in January,

  84. I preach a message on what I refer to as our covenant relationship that

  85. God has initiated,

  86. established a covenant with us.

  87. Jeremiah talks about it being the new covenant.

  88. We saw it in Hebrews as we were studying the new covenant.

  89. And so God has given us this covenant relationship.

  90. And I want to tell you that covenant is relationship.

  91. You know,

  92. if you're going to covenant together,

  93. you're establishing relationship with one another.

  94. So then the question is,

  95. what is our relationship together as the gathering?

  96. You know,

  97. if we're going to gather together for the purpose of worship,

  98. we can say yes,

  99. because we know Jesus,

  100. because we walk with Jesus,

  101. because we have this relationship with Jesus.

  102. But what's our relationship with each other?

  103. Right. How.

  104. How many of you know anybody that attends the 1040 worship gathering?

  105. Some of,

  106. you know,

  107. some of them.

  108. Right, right.

  109. Well, guess what?

  110. They're your family.

  111. They're your brothers and sisters.

  112. See, we all gather as the body of Christ in this place,

  113. and we are in relationship together with one another as the family of God

  114. in this community.

  115. Right. So when people talk about the gathering,

  116. I didn't realize that people do,

  117. but, you know,

  118. and folks say,

  119. and particularly over this last little season of things,

  120. people will introduce me.

  121. And they go,

  122. yeah, Bobby's the pastor at the gathering.

  123. And they go,

  124. oh, right.

  125. And I go,

  126. is that a good O or a bad O?

  127. You know,

  128. but my point is,

  129. the gathering is a body.

  130. It's the body of Christ in this place.

  131. And so there are some expectations within the body of Christ,

  132. but there are some expectations of the body of Christ,

  133. right? I mean,

  134. there's some things that we represent in the world around us.

  135. There's some things that God longs to see in us.

  136. For instance,

  137. God wants the world to.

  138. To see us not eating from the tree,

  139. right? That's the sin part of it,

  140. right? God wants the world to see righteousness among his people.

  141. God wants the world to see holiness practiced within the body of Christ.

  142. So when I talk about this relationship,

  143. God's the author of it.

  144. God's invited us and made a way for us to have a relationship with him

  145. first and foremost.

  146. Now, what's our relationship together?

  147. Well, the covenant Sunday kind of represents what we refer to as covenant

  148. relationship. Because when I first came here,

  149. there were a lot of folks who attended occasionally,

  150. right?

  151. You know,

  152. they'd show up and they'd be here for vacation,

  153. or they'd be here certain period of the year and that kind of thing.

  154. And they'd want to be involved.

  155. But there were some restrictions to being involved.

  156. And so we kind of established this idea of a covenant relationship.

  157. There are some people who live in this community,

  158. and by and large,

  159. a lot of them have to do with the military or the base or something like

  160. that.

  161. And they want to be a part of what God's doing in this place.

  162. But guess what?

  163. They're not going to move their membership from Mama's church or

  164. something like that.

  165. So we created this covenant relationship whereby if you agree,

  166. if you want to be a part of what God's doing here,

  167. you can,

  168. you can jump right in the deep end of all that God's doing in this place.

  169. And we want you to.

  170. That's why the whole next step's idea was,

  171. all right,

  172. how do I get in the deep water?

  173. How do I get involved in what God's doing here?

  174. How can I connect with other people,

  175. right? Other than that?

  176. Three minutes,

  177. we give you to turn around and shake your neighbor's hand.

  178. See? So I'm going to share with you the four points of the covenant

  179. relationship. And Kyle,

  180. this morning,

  181. y'all is preaching up in Bergaw at Mission Baptist for now.

  182. And we'll be rotating in worship leadership and pastors up there over the

  183. next few weeks and months.

  184. And I'm meeting with the elders tonight to talk about the future and that

  185. kind of thing.

  186. And so I'm really excited about the fact that I believe that what we

  187. enjoy as the gathering,

  188. God actually has a plan for scattering.

  189. Alright, so if you live somewhere between here and Burgo,

  190. go to Burgo,

  191. right? You can find parking and seats.

  192. But the first point of the gathering relationship,

  193. and I want to read from Romans chapter 15,

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  194. 5 and 6,

  195. because we're not there yet in our study of Romans,

  196. which we begin next week,

  197. by the way,

  198. it reads this.

  199. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such

  200. harmony with one another in accord with Christ Jesus,

  201. that together you may with one voice glorify the God and father of our

  202. Lord Jesus Christ.

  203. Is that not a powerful two verses right there?

  204. That when we speak as one voice to a lost,

  205. dead, dying,

  206. dark world out there,

  207. that we glorify God together,

  208. we come together as one to bring glory to God,

  209. to exalt his name so the first point of the Gathering covenant is I will

  210. protect the unity,

  211. the oneness of the Gathering.

  212. I will protect you.

  213. Here you go.

  214. Let's pick somebody.

  215. Tom. Alright,

  216. so we run out into the street somewhere and somebody decides they want to

  217. say something bad about tomorrow defending Tom.

  218. Cause he's my brother,

  219. I'm not going to join with him and go,

  220. yeah, he really likes race cars too much and particularly Dodge,

  221. right?

  222. No, I'm not going to join with the world to attack my brother.

  223. You see what I mean?

  224. That's part of the unity of the gathering.

  225. Now. Yeah,

  226. you can get out there and say somebody says something bad about the

  227. Gathering, defend that.

  228. But no,

  229. that's not what it's talking about.

  230. What it's talking about is we're going to defend each other.

  231. You see,

  232. we're going to defend one another,

  233. we're going to help one another.

  234. So when we see this,

  235. we're going to protect the unity of gathering by acting in love toward

  236. each other,

  237. by refusing to gossip,

  238. and by following the leaders,

  239. the leadership of the gathering that God's provided for shepherds.

  240. So when we look at this covenant is relationship,

  241. the first point of the covenant relationship is we're family and we're

  242. going to defend each other.

  243. We're going to take an active part in standing up for one another and

  244. being a benefit and assist,

  245. helping one another,

  246. bearing one another's burdens.

  247. You see,

  248. that's what the body of Christ is supposed to look like to a lost and

  249. dying world.

  250. Right? And yet,

  251. you know,

  252. you know me,

  253. most of you do anyway.

  254. A lot of what the world sees is a fight in church.

  255. Did y'all know that a lot of what the world sees is not love within the

  256. body of Christ,

  257. but animosity.

  258. And so that's not us.

  259. We're not going to do that.

  260. Right?

  261. Okay.

  262. Second point of the gathering covenant,

  263. or the covenant that God's called us to,

  264. I think these are four points that apply to all of the body of Christ.

  265. I think if we consider what God gave us in family,

  266. it certainly assumed that I'm going to defend my family.

  267. And if we are the family of God,

  268. with Christ as the head and God as our father,

  269. then we're supposed to defend each other.

  270. Second thing is I'm going to share the responsibility of the gathering.

  271. I'm going to share the responsibility that we have in the body of Christ.

  272. What does that mean?

  273. I'm not just a spectator.

  274. Okay, you know what,

  275. I like Clemson football,

  276. but they've never invited me down on the Field,

  277. they never said,

  278. here, put these pads on.

  279. Go hit that guy that's twice as big as you are.

  280. Nobody ever did that for me in football.

  281. Never. Not even in Little league.

  282. And the one time they did,

  283. I quit.

  284. I was a small fellow,

  285. right? But in the body of Christ,

  286. we have a responsibility toward each other and for each other and for the

  287. testimony and who we are in the world around us.

  288. So how are we going to share the responsibility of this gathering?

  289. Let me share these verses with you first,

  290. Thessalonians. As Paul is writing to the church that's in Thessalonica,

  291. he says this.

  292. We give thanks to God always for you,

  293. constantly mentioning you in our prayers.

  294. And I want everybody put your head on a swivel a minute.

  295. Ready? Everybody do this.

  296. Exercise your,

  297. exercise your head.

  298. Now I want y'all to.

  299. As you swivel,

  300. alright?

  301. Everybody look that way.

  302. I'm looking right.

  303. Y'all look left.

  304. Now as you swivel your head back,

  305. left, stop on a person in the room.

  306. Anybody just pick a person in the room.

  307. Take, take a half a second or a couple of seconds and pray for them right

  308. now. Pray for them.

  309. That's what Paul said.

  310. Pray for them.

  311. We give thanks to God always for all of you constantly mentioning you in

  312. our prayers.

  313. How about that?

  314. Pray for each other,

  315. folks. Pick somebody out and just pray for them,

  316. right? I mean,

  317. I can stand up here and I can call a bunch of you by name,

  318. just say yup and just pray for them.

  319. Luke 14:23 says.

    Luke 14:23

  320. And the Master said to the servant,

  321. go out.

  322. Now, this is one of the parables of Jesus talking about the wedding party

  323. of heaven,

  324. right? Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in

  325. that my house may be filled.

  326. Now, I want to give y'all some commendation.

  327. Y'all do a good job at this.

  328. Let's just share Christmas Eve as a particular point,

  329. right? How many of you were here Christmas Eve?

  330. How many of you got here early enough to get a seat?

  331. Thank you very much.

  332. You see,

  333. I think it's great that we can go out into the community in an effort of

  334. being excited about what God's doing and invite people to come be excited

  335. with us to come to the house,

  336. this worship center,

  337. and celebrate and sing and,

  338. and hug each other and just show people the love of God,

  339. you see,

  340. Go and bring people in,

  341. fill my house up.

  342. And then Romans 15,

    Romans 15:7

  343. verse 7,

  344. which is just beyond verse 6 that I read a minute ago,

  345. therefore, now this is what it says.

  346. I'll go back and read 5 and 6,

  347. because that's point one.

  348. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such

  349. harmony with one another in accord with Christ Jesus,

  350. that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our

  351. Lord Jesus Christ.

  352. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of

  353. God, Right?

  354. Welcome each other when we turn you loose for the chaos that is greeting

  355. time, man.

  356. Go welcome somebody.

  357. They may say,

  358. I've been here longer than you,

  359. so what?

  360. Welcome them.

  361. I tell folks all the time,

  362. you just act like you've been here.

  363. Nobody will know the difference.

  364. You see what I mean?

  365. So we're supposed to just wrap people up as they come in the door,

  366. right? I mean,

  367. there's some people I love.

  368. I don't mind hugging anybody,

  369. right?

  370. I'll hug you.

  371. And what's funny is there are those people who don't,

  372. right? And you always know those people because when you reach out to

  373. shake. This is a pastor's manipulation.

  374. You ready?

  375. Come here,

  376. Tom. Let's show them I'm still in camera,

  377. right? I grab your hand,

  378. this is what I'm doing.

  379. And the minute I start to tug,

  380. you know,

  381. the non huggers go like that.

  382. You see?

  383. See, we're supposed to show one another love.

  384. Not just this indifference or this,

  385. oh, yeah,

  386. I've seen you sit over here before,

  387. I'm glad to see you again this week kind of thing.

  388. We're supposed to love people as they walk in the door.

  389. Because you know what?

  390. Out in the world,

  391. out there,

  392. people don't love each other.

  393. They don't tell you a story because I got lots of them.

  394. After the eighth grade,

  395. Eli went to a Christian school.

  396. He'd been in public school from kindergarten up through the eighth grade

  397. or through half of the eighth grade.

  398. And then we took him out and put him in a Christian school and.

  399. And Eli loved to play soccer.

  400. See, he was a little like me at one time.

  401. Now he's bigger than me and that's okay.

  402. But he tried basketball.

  403. Didn't work.

  404. He tried T ball,

  405. it was boring.

  406. And then he tried soccer.

  407. And he was fast.

  408. Good gracious,

  409. that kid was fast.

  410. He'd be the fastest one on the field.

  411. He'd fly.

  412. And I remember in kindergarten,

  413. soccer, there was a whole huddle of them.

  414. You know how a bunch of little kindergartners got the ball in the middle

  415. of them,

  416. they all kicking each other and this sort of thing.

  417. Well, Eli pile drive into that mess and came out the other side with the

  418. ball and went to the Goal.

  419. Right? So he goes to private school up in Jacksonville,

  420. up there.

  421. And he's really nervous in August of that year,

  422. his ninth grade year.

  423. And he goes in.

  424. He doesn't know how they're going to relate to him and all that sort of

  425. thing. And it's a Christian school that actually practiced Christian

  426. relationship. And when he walked in,

  427. they said,

  428. oh, hey,

  429. you're new.

  430. And he was like,

  431. yeah. They're like,

  432. man, we're glad you're here.

  433. We're glad you're here to play soccer.

  434. We're glad you're here for school.

  435. And he came home that day and he went.

  436. They talked to me.

  437. See, the world doesn't do that,

  438. folks. Right?

  439. The world is very skeptical of one another and very cynical about each

  440. other. And so we doubt or the world tries to use one another for their

  441. own benefit.

  442. In the body of Christ,

  443. we're just supposed to love each other.

  444. That's what it's talking about.

  445. Third point is,

  446. I will serve the ministry of the gathering.

  447. That is really the representation of what God's called us to do,

  448. to be a part of what God's called us to be a part of.

  449. And how do we do that?

  450. Here you go,

  451. from First Peter,

    1 Peter 4:10

  452. chapter 4,

  453. verse 10 says,

  454. as each has received a gift.

  455. Did you bring yours this morning?

  456. Just checking.

  457. As each has received a gift,

  458. use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace.

  459. So the first point of that is I need to know what my gift is.

  460. What is it God's entrusted to you for his kingdom's sake?

  461. Right? Maybe you just got a great smile.

  462. We had a great big old choir at First Baptist Church in Beaufort,

  463. Georgia, Right?

  464. And Wayne used to say that we have singers and smilers.

  465. There were people who wanted to be a part of the choir because it was a

  466. cool choir and some of them could really sing and some of them really

  467. couldn't. He said,

  468. that's the smiling row.

  469. Your job's to smile,

  470. right? Maybe your gift is just smiling or joy or hospitality.

  471. Maybe your gift is withstanding cold.

  472. And we need you on the parking team this morning,

  473. okay? Discover your gift,

  474. the talents that God's poured into you by being equipped to serve as

  475. needed within the body,

  476. by the pastors,

  477. the teachers,

  478. the ministries of this gathering.

  479. And then this is probably the starting point,

  480. is by developing a servant's heart,

  481. are you willing to give of yourself time,

  482. energy, talents?

  483. Are you willing to give?

  484. Now, I don't know who you picked out to pray for a few minutes ago,

  485. but what Are you willing to give that person for the glory of God in the

  486. kingdom?

  487. See, by developing a servant's heart in the fourth point of the gathering

  488. covenant relationship is just simply this.

  489. I will support the testimony of the gathering of the body of Christ.

  490. And this is the one that goes back to Hebrews.

  491. And since we spent all last year in Hebrews,

  492. I'm sure you all got this memorized.

  493. Hebrews 10,

  494. 23, 25.

  495. And I've only given them verse 25.

  496. But this is where it starts.

  497. It says,

  498. let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering,

  499. since he who promised is faithful.

  500. And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and good works,

  501. not neglecting to gather together as some are in the habit of doing,

  502. but encouraging each other.

  503. And all the more as you see the day approaching.

  504. I'm kind of hard on what I often call church and churchianity,

  505. right? I grew up in it,

  506. man, I tell y'all,

  507. I'm 62.

  508. I've been in church 62 years and nine months.

  509. I met a lady at Mom's funeral Wednesday who is the pianist at the church

  510. my parents took me to when I was first born,

  511. Harris Baptist Church,

  512. where I was a mission friend.

  513. Remember that?

  514. And this lady came up,

  515. she says,

  516. I'm the pianist at Harris Baptist Church.

  517. And I went,

  518. oh, I was a sunbeam in that church.

  519. And she kind of grinned because she knew what I was talking about,

  520. right? But here's the truth of it,

  521. folks. When we consider our testimony,

  522. does our testimony,

  523. the world support,

  524. highlight, enhance the testimony of the body of Christ?

  525. Do people look at us?

  526. You want me to get more,

  527. more specific?

  528. Do people look at you and go,

  529. you must know Jesus?

  530. Is that your testimony?

  531. Is that what people see in you?

  532. Oh, man,

  533. you must know Jesus.

  534. How do we support the testimony of this body?

  535. By attending faithfully,

  536. by living a godly life,

  537. by giving regularly.

  538. And. Yeah,

  539. that's one of those times where I mentioned,

  540. yeah, your time,

  541. your energy,

  542. your talent,

  543. what God's provided for you by giving of yourself for the kingdom of God,

  544. the ministry that God's called you to be a part of.

  545. So then I finish today's message with this question.

  546. Why are you here?

  547. I mean,

  548. I love it that you're here.

  549. Don't get me wrong.

  550. I'm not telling you to leave and I'm not telling you I don't want to see

  551. you back next week.

  552. Matter of fact,

  553. I'm going to mention Emily and Sherry over there because this is the

  554. first time they've been in the community now,

  555. again, for a while.

  556. Again, I say that,

  557. but they came from Pisgah Forest where I pastored before,

  558. right? They were members of Pisgah Forest Baptist Church.

  559. And Sherry took care of Eli when he was little and Emily was a little

  560. young girl back there and all that sort of thing.

  561. And they've had some real life changes over the last several years.

  562. And they decided to relocate and they decided to come here.

  563. Now, I don't know that the gathering is the main reason for relocating

  564. here, but they walked up to me this morning and said,

  565. hey. And I went,

  566. ah, just to hug their necks.

  567. That's Emily and Sherry over there.

  568. Raise your hands.

  569. Go ahead and tell them they're here.

  570. Now, here's what I'm going to tell you.

  571. This is what I love about it,

  572. because when they came in,

  573. I said,

  574. y'all not going to guess who's here this weekend.

  575. They said,

  576. who? I said,

  577. ronnie and Debbie English.

  578. Ronnie and Debbie English is another couple from up at Pisgah Forest who

  579. come here regularly and come and worship with us regularly when they come

  580. down on vacation.

  581. They'll be here later in the morning.

  582. Folks, the body of Christ is not just in this room.

  583. The body of Christ extends out into the community.

  584. And when the community,

  585. when the world,

  586. the lost world,

  587. sees how the body of Christ loves each other,

  588. that is the main opportunity for us to share the testimony and the

  589. witness of Christ.

  590. Does your testimony point people to Jesus?

  591. See that man?

  592. Covenant relationship.

  593. God has authored it.

  594. And if you're in this room right now,

  595. I'm going to go ahead and tell you God has offered it to you.

  596. Relationship with him and relationship with each other.

  597. Okay, so there is a covenant card.

  598. We don't really ask you to sign it and turn it in anymore,

  599. but we're going to be producing those and making those available to you

  600. that have all of my outline this morning is just simply a copy of the

  601. covenant card.

  602. That's it.

  603. Because we covenant with each other,

  604. we covenant with God,

  605. and we covenant with each other to be the body of Christ in this place

  606. and wherever we are.

  607. So y'all know my next line,

  608. right? It all starts with Jesus.

  609. If you don't know Jesus,

  610. you don't have that relationship.

  611. If you've never trusted Jesus as Lord and Savior and received the

  612. redemption and salvation that God has offered,

  613. you need that more than you need anything else.

  614. I'm just going to go ahead and tell you,

  615. you're not going to know the peace that Christ gives.

  616. You're not going to know the community of relationship and fellowship

  617. with God and with each other that God offers in Christ.

  618. You need Jesus.

  619. And if you got Jesus,

  620. you know that.

  621. That you need him.

  622. All right,

  623. I will tell you this,

  624. you know,

  625. 15 years later,

  626. I love this gathering.

  627. I love being able to stand up and share the word of God.

  628. I love,

  629. I love it that when I walked in this morning,

  630. boy, everybody wanted to hug me and share their prayers for me and their

  631. concern for me.

  632. But I'm going to tell y'all something.

  633. You know what?

  634. Even up until the last I knew where mom was headed.

  635. I know where she is.

  636. I know that her worship as good as our worship is,

  637. y'all, her worship this Sunday morning was better than ours.

  638. Alright, I'm okay.

  639. This year is going to be a good year,

  640. y'all. It's going to be exciting to see what God does in our midst.

  641. All right?

  642. If you don't know Jesus,

  643. we're going to give you an opportunity to know him.

  644. If you need somebody to share with you Christ,

  645. and we've got folks here who will sit down and talk with you about Jesus.

  646. Okay? Maybe you want to be a part of the gathering.

  647. You know,

  648. kind of the whole membership thing,

  649. which goes kind of one step beyond the covenant relationship idea,

  650. actually making your membership a part of this.

  651. You can do that,

  652. too.

  653. All you got to do is come down and say,

  654. I want to be a member.

  655. And then we'll fill out a little card and we'll put you in.

  656. Put you in that really old book that we have in the office.

  657. You know that book,

  658. don't you,

  659. Amanda? It's a really old book.

  660. Anyway, be a part of what God's doing this year,

  661. y'all. You can't imagine,

  662. just can't imagine what God wants to do.

  663. Let's pray.

  664. God, thank you for today.

  665. Thank you for your love.

  666. And thank you,

  667. God, that you have made us a part of something that is way beyond us.

  668. God, you've loved us.

  669. You've shown us that love in Christ.

  670. God, you've wrapped us up with a family and a body whereby,

  671. God, we can love you together.

  672. And then we get to love each other and to bring you glory because of our

  673. love for each other as the body of Christ.

  674. So, God,

  675. today we celebrate.

  676. We celebrate a new year.

  677. Yeah, we celebrate a Sunday.

  678. But God,

  679. again, we just celebrate being part of your family.

  680. So God help us to love each other like he called us to do.

  681. And God first and foremost,

  682. help us to love you back.

  683. We pray it in Jesus name.

  684. Amen.
