  1. Jesus talks about this in the book of Luke chapter 4. He says, I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  2. You know, the spirit of the Lord is on him to give this good news. And so he goes. And then they keep trying to look for him and he keeps saying, hey, we've got to go.

  3. We've got to keep going because the good news needs to spread. And I hope, and actually, I know, not only hope, I know that there have been people in this congregation has been going through the book of Acts.

  4. But the Holy Spirit, the same Holy Spirit that moved these people here is the same Holy Spirit that has been moving you to go and be more courageous to your friends, family and colleagues.

  5. And I can see that. I've witnessed that. And that's what given that's what's given me courage as I stand up here opening up this word, because I know the Holy Spirit is speaking to you.

  6. And so Jesus is basically saying the same thing. He says, I must go preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well.

  7. And then he says it's for it was for this reason I was sent. It was for this purpose.

  8. And so when you understand why Jesus came, you start to really understand what we should do, how we should respond.

  9. And actually, just he came to save. The passage I'm going to be focusing on, if I can just invite you, is again, we'll stay in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  10. Chapter 19, verse 10. If there's one verse that really sums up the whole theme of this Gospel, is Jesus declaring why he came.

  11. It says this, for the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.

  12. Do you have that favorite bit when the preacher just goes, hey, if you forget everything else today, you remember this.

  13. If you forget everything else today, remember this line that Jesus said.

  14. When you look at the news later and you see that number continuing to count and you feel despair,

  15. you look and you see that's the passage that you hold on to.

  16. That's what you cling on to. Jesus, the Son of Man, came to seek and save the lost.

  17. Of course, I want to understand a little bit more about why he said this.

  18. So I'm actually inviting you, as we always do, to stand in reverence and awe for the word of the Lord.

  19. And I'm going to ask Juju to come up and read it for us.

  20. The Gospel of Luke, chapter 19, starting from verse 1.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  21. He entered Jericho and was passing through.

  22. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus.

  23. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.

  24. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was.

  25. But on account of the crowd, he could not because he was small in stature.

  26. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him,

  27. for he was about to pass that way.

  28. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him,

  29. Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.

  30. So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.

  31. And when they saw it, they all grumbled.

  32. He has gone in to be a guest of a man who is a sinner.

  33. And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,

  34. Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor.

  35. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.

  36. And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house,

  37. since he also is a son of Abraham.

  38. For the son of man came to seek and to save the lost.

  39. This is the word of the Lord.

  40. Praise be to God.

  41. Please take a seat.

  42. Thank you, Gigi.

  43. Feels nice standing up on a stage, doesn't it?

  44. Small in stature.

  45. Small in stature.

  46. I promise you there's no reason why I asked you to read that.

  47. Other than the spirit's leading.

  48. But that's low hanging fruit, guys.

  49. Let's not do that to Gigi.

  50. There are way better ways.

  51. As Paul says, let's not talk about his, attack his character.

  52. That's what we do.

  53. That's how we know we love each other.

  54. This line here.

  55. So when I say that I wrote my sermon,

  56. and then it feels a little bit dated,

  57. is I've just scribbled all over it now and blocked things out.

  58. Because one of the things that I really wanted to say,

  59. and I'll say now, but with all the care I can as I say this,

  60. is this world is not in a good place.

  61. My words exactly here is,

  62. the world is on fire right now.

  63. And we as the church, what are we actually doing?

  64. What are we actually doing?

  65. See, the problem is,

  66. those outside are not doing well,

  67. but then they look down at our churches,

  68. and they say, well, you're not any better.

  69. It's just filled with hypocrisy.

  70. You aren't helping in any way.

  71. Instead of living with conviction,

  72. you've assimilated into society.

  73. You look just the same as us.

  74. Instead of having any kind of urgency,

  75. like we have been reminded of this week,

  76. we have on the most part lived with just complacency.

  77. When the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost,

  78. and yet we kind of just go,

  79. oh yeah, well, that's what he did.

  80. But where are you going to find Christ right now?

  81. It's his body.

  82. And so his body better understand,

  83. better,

  84. why the head came.

  85. And then, and only then can we be the change

  86. that he desires for us to be.

  87. You see in Acts,

  88. we just read a couple weeks ago,

  89. that the Christians there,

  90. the followers of Christ,

  91. they turn the world upside down.

  92. But in order for that to happen,

  93. Christians need to first understand

  94. what Christ did for them,

  95. and for their lives,

  96. their hearts to be turned upside down,

  97. for their value systems

  98. to completely turn upside down.

  99. And only then,

  100. if we invite Christ into our lives,

  101. and we say we are going to be Christians,

  102. we are going to be followers of Christ,

  103. then we invite him into our hearts,

  104. we allow him to move the furniture around,

  105. change everything up completely.

  106. But so often,

  107. if we ask ourselves,

  108. we kind of did invite him,

  109. well, really,

  110. we just believed in him,

  111. and we treat him as kind of like a,

  112. an end of life,

  113. post life insurance policy.

  114. We treat him,

  115. okay, well,

  116. Jesus,

  117. if we believe in you,

  118. do you promise that we get to be with you in eternity?

  119. But yes,

  120. we want to be with you in eternity,

  121. but we kind of don't want to be with you right now.

  122. So we're going to keep living our lives right now,

  123. but just in case,

  124. because we'd rather have that

  125. than the fire and the pitchforks.

  126. So why don't we just believe in you now?

  127. Can you see,

  128. can you see what the world sees?

  129. Can you see the hypocrisy that they see?

  130. That we say we want to follow him,

  131. and yet we live our lives

  132. completely in the way that the world

  133. just does anyway.

  134. We say we want to spend eternity with him,

  135. but we can't even spend five minutes with him

  136. on a day-to-day basis.

  137. Something seems off.

  138. If we are to truly understand

  139. why we as a church exist,

  140. why we gather,

  141. we must first understand

  142. why Jesus came.

  143. Last week in Acts 18,

  144. we met Apollos, right?

  145. This gifted speaker,

  146. probably the debate champion.

  147. And he comes and he speaks,

  148. and then what do Priscilla and Aquila do?

  149. They take him aside and say,

  150. hey, you are right,

  151. Jesus is the Messiah,

  152. but actually we don't think

  153. you truly understand

  154. how that works.

  155. You only got to the baptism of John.

  156. You don't understand that actually

  157. the Spirit of Christ now lives in us,

  158. and actually it's the Holy Spirit

  159. that is sanctifying

  160. and moving people towards him,

  161. drawing people towards him.

  162. Do you understand what the Holy Spirit

  163. is actually doing here?

  164. And so he, open to rebuke,

  165. open to being trained,

  166. humbly receives it.

  167. All from this place where he kind of knew

  168. what Jesus was,

  169. who Jesus was,

  170. but he didn't truly.

  171. I wonder whether that's the same

  172. for all of us.

  173. Yes, we do know

  174. that we need to believe in Jesus,

  175. but we actually don't really know why.

  176. We don't really know how to follow him.

  177. And so here we are.

  178. We see this account

  179. that's an interesting one

  180. that is, of course,

  181. a very famous one,

  182. probably the most famous story

  183. about a short guy

  184. that we can find in the Bible,

  185. Zacchaeus.

  186. Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector.

  187. So we're going to break it down

  188. a little bit.

  189. Luke chapter 19, verse 1.

    Luke 19:1

  190. He entered Jericho

  191. and was passing through

  192. and behold,

  193. there was a man named Zacchaeus.

  194. He was a chief tax collector

  195. and was rich.

  196. Why was he rich?

  197. Because he was not just a tax collector.

  198. There was tax farming

  199. from his own people

  200. to collect for the Roman Empire,

  201. but he was the chief tax collector,

  202. which meant that he actually

  203. had a team of tax collectors

  204. that would collect money for him,

  205. bring it all to him.

  206. He would then look

  207. and count the pot,

  208. take what he needed for himself

  209. or what he wanted for himself,

  210. and then he would pass it on

  211. to the Romans.

  212. So he was rich.

  213. Interestingly,

  214. this kind of person

  215. would not be doing

  216. what we see he does next here.

  217. And he was seeking

  218. to see who Jesus was,

  219. but on account of the crowd,

  220. he could not

  221. because he was small in stature.

  222. So he ran on ahead

  223. and climbed up

  224. into a sycamore tree

  225. to see him,

  226. for he was about

  227. to pass that way.

  228. Imagine someone

  229. who is rich.

  230. Someone who is rich,

  231. who has status,

  232. who obviously has influence,

  233. has power,

  234. socially isolated

  235. from his own people,

  236. by the way,

  237. banned from synagogues,

  238. likely,

  239. because his people

  240. wouldn't have wanted

  241. anything to do with him.

  242. But maybe,

  243. I've got a feeling

  244. that over time,

  245. if you live that kind of life,

  246. your heart would have

  247. just become hard.

  248. Like, you know what?

  249. If you don't want to be near me,

  250. I don't want to be near you.

  251. Hey, I'm doing me,

  252. I'm living my life,

  253. and you do yours.

  254. What would it have taken

  255. for someone like him

  256. to then hear

  257. all the hype

  258. about this person,

  259. Jesus,

  260. and decide,

  261. I really want to find out

  262. about this person.

  263. So whilst he was rich

  264. and whilst he had power,

  265. he was also desperate

  266. for the truth.

  267. And so he runs,

  268. which wouldn't have been

  269. a thing that someone

  270. like him would have done.

  271. And he runs,

  272. and you can just imagine

  273. the scene.

  274. People are just rushing

  275. towards Jesus.

  276. He's trying to get there,

  277. and he's trying to see,

  278. but he can't see

  279. because he's short.

  280. He can't see.

  281. So what does he do?

  282. Then he sees a tree.

  283. And so he's like,

  284. well, I'm going to climb up

  285. on the tree.

  286. I must see this guy.

  287. You can see how smart he is

  288. because he's running,

  289. and he's like,

  290. I can't see.

  291. And actually,

  292. the Jews probably

  293. would have seen him

  294. and said,

  295. well, block his way.

  296. I would,

  297. because I don't like him.

  298. So I'm not going

  299. to let you pass.

  300. But then he's smart.

  301. He doesn't become

  302. chief tax collector

  303. without being smart.

  304. So then he sees

  305. where Jesus is heading,

  306. and then he cuts him off

  307. another way,

  308. finds a tree to climb up,

  309. climbs up the tree.

  310. Can you see the hunger

  311. that comes from the,

  312. leading to actions like that?

  313. What that means is

  314. he was rich,

  315. but he was still dissatisfied.

  316. He's still looking for,

  317. he's still looking for,

  318. basically,

  319. who Jesus was.

  320. He's still looking

  321. for the truth.

  322. And then the fascinating

  323. moment comes.

  324. Whilst he's looking

  325. for Jesus,

  326. Jesus walked by the tree

  327. because he was right,

  328. he did walk past there.

  329. Jesus stops.

  330. Jesus stops

  331. and looks up at him

  332. and says,

  333. Zacchaeus,

  334. hurry and come down,

  335. for I must stay

  336. at your house today.

  337. Why does Jesus do this

  338. all the time?

  339. He just seems to do

  340. the thing that is

  341. the least predictable.

  342. What's Jesus trying

  343. to do here?

  344. What's he trying to prove?

  345. He's looking at Zacchaeus.

  346. Everyone knows

  347. who Zacchaeus is.

  348. And yet he stops

  349. and in front of everyone

  350. says,

  351. Zacchaeus,

  352. you come down.

  353. Well,

  354. first thing,

  355. he knows his name.

  356. So it's interesting here,

  357. when we say that

  358. the Son of Man

  359. came to seek

  360. and save the lost,

  361. it's important

  362. that you see

  363. Zacchaeus

  364. as the one

  365. who's seeking

  366. after Jesus,

  367. but actually Jesus

  368. is already

  369. familiar with him.

  370. And that's what I said

  371. a couple weeks ago,

  372. right?

  373. The moment

  374. where you truly get it

  375. as a Christian

  376. is when you've been

  377. chasing God

  378. and pursuing God

  379. all of your life

  380. until the moment

  381. you realize

  382. actually he's been

  383. the one who's

  384. pursuing you.

  385. He's been the one

  386. who has been seeking

  387. and pursuing you.

  388. So he says,

  389. Zacchaeus,

  390. come down.

  391. I must,

  392. I must stay

  393. at your house.

  394. And of course,

  395. Zacchaeus was filled

  396. with joy.

  397. It's ironic.

  398. The name Zacchaeus

  399. actually means

  400. pure and righteous.

  401. And of course,

  402. he's anything,

  403. but you don't get

  404. that rich by being

  405. pure and righteous.

  406. You don't get

  407. that hated by your people

  408. by being pure and righteous.

  409. But it's really interesting.

  410. Jesus says,

  411. I must come to your house today.

  412. It's not,

  413. hey,

  414. I just want to acknowledge you.

  415. No, he says,

  416. I must come to your house today.

  417. Do you recognize how big,

  418. how scandalous

  419. that would have been?

  420. And you hear it

  421. and you see it.

  422. And when they saw it,

  423. verse seven,

  424. they all grumbled.

  425. He has gone in

  426. to be the guest

  427. of a man who is a sinner.

  428. This wasn't just,

  429. hey,

  430. hi,

  431. shake your hand.

  432. Nice to meet you.

  433. I know you are.

  434. This is,

  435. I must come to your house today.

  436. I must associate with you.

  437. I want to move beyond

  438. just an acquaintance with you.

  439. Sharing a table

  440. with a sinner.

  441. Probably the most scandalous thing

  442. that Jesus did

  443. time and time again.

  444. Hang out with people

  445. that shouldn't be hung out with.

  446. Why?

  447. Because the son of man

  448. came to seek

  449. and save

  450. the lost.

  451. He didn't come

  452. for the righteous.

  453. He came for the sinners.

  454. Intellectually,

  455. in our heads,

  456. I think we understand that.

  457. But those of us

  458. who have been

  459. around the church

  460. for a long time,

  461. we actually don't

  462. truly,

  463. truly get that

  464. because we think

  465. actually Jesus came

  466. for us

  467. because we've been

  468. working hard enough.

  469. Because my church

  470. attendance

  471. is over 75%.

  472. So Jesus came

  473. for me.

  474. It's because I'm not

  475. sinning anymore,

  476. or at least it's not

  477. as much as I used to.

  478. That's why Jesus loves me.

  479. It's at that moment

  480. we realize actually

  481. we have missed the point

  482. of why the son of man came.

  483. He came to seek

  484. and save

  485. the lost.

  486. What does it mean

  487. to be lost?

  488. As someone,

  489. as I've said,

  490. growing up in the late 1900s,

  491. getting lost

  492. was a familiar event

  493. because you just,

  494. there was no smartphone.

  495. There was a map.

  496. My father trained me

  497. when we visited

  498. Toronto

  499. as a kid,

  500. or just Canada,

  501. just this vast expanse.

  502. and he would sit me

  503. in front of him,

  504. not in front of him,

  505. that would be dangerous

  506. in the car,

  507. but he would sit me

  508. in the passenger seat

  509. and he would give me

  510. the map.

  511. Or in England

  512. there would be

  513. an A to Z.

  514. Deeply,

  515. deeply confusing.

  516. Right?

  517. And then he'd say,

  518. hey,

  519. we want to get here,

  520. tell us how.

  521. Now,

  522. something about directions

  523. is you need to know

  524. two things.

  525. You need to first,

  526. in order to know where,

  527. well one,

  528. you need to know

  529. where you're going,

  530. you need to know

  531. the destination,

  532. but maybe even more importantly

  533. is you need to know

  534. where you are right now.

  535. Otherwise,

  536. there's no point

  537. looking at a map

  538. because if you don't know

  539. where you are right now,

  540. you're not going to get

  541. to your destination.

  542. But those of you

  543. growing up in more recent times

  544. won't understand that,

  545. right?

  546. Because your phone

  547. will tell you

  548. where you're at.

  549. In a time before

  550. AirTags

  551. and Google Maps,

  552. we,

  553. I think,

  554. truly understood

  555. what it meant

  556. to be lost.

  557. This week,

  558. I was reminded once again

  559. what it meant

  560. to be lost

  561. and helpless.

  562. And this is what I'm saying.

  563. I think there's some of us here

  564. who need to,

  565. who need to hear,

  566. hear me loud and clear

  567. that you have been found.

  568. Just as what Danny said,

  569. that Jesus came for you.

  570. You didn't think

  571. you could find your own way.

  572. You knew you couldn't

  573. find your own way.

  574. You are the,

  575. maybe you are the younger brother

  576. in the parable

  577. of the prodigal son

  578. and you're like,

  579. I knew I was,

  580. I was so lost

  581. and Jesus came

  582. to find you

  583. despite everything

  584. that you did.

  585. Jesus came to pursue you,

  586. to seek you

  587. and to save you.

  588. Some of you need

  589. to hear that.

  590. But actually,

  591. the creator of heaven

  592. and earth

  593. knew exactly

  594. where you were

  595. and in that moment

  596. dragged you out of the pit

  597. as it says

  598. in Psalm 103.

  599. I think some of us

  600. genuinely need to hear that

  601. because we're sat here

  602. still thinking,

  603. actually,

  604. I don't know if I'm found.

  605. There's another group though.

  606. There's another group

  607. who I think

  608. you actually don't know

  609. that you're lost.

  610. Well, you might say,

  611. well, I know exactly

  612. where I am.

  613. I am in

  614. Admiralty,

  615. Tower.

  616. Admiralty Center,

  617. Tower 2,

  618. fifth floor.

  619. By the way,

  620. the most convenient building

  621. in the whole of Hong Kong

  622. for church

  623. is my own opinion.

  624. Because if you look

  625. at the whole of the MTR map,

  626. which is the station

  627. that is most connected?

  628. Probably Admiralty.

  629. If you look at the MTR station,

  630. you look and see

  631. which exit

  632. is probably the most convenient

  633. that can head straight up

  634. into the building.

  635. It's probably exit A.

  636. And I hope you're not here

  637. because this is a convenient place

  638. for you to worship.

  639. But my goodness,

  640. it is convenient.

  641. But some of you

  642. are actually genuinely lost

  643. and I'm here to try

  644. and convince you of that

  645. because you might say,

  646. well, what am I lost in?

  647. Well, I think you're lost

  648. in your busyness.

  649. I think you're lost

  650. in your productivity.

  651. I think you're lost

  652. in money.

  653. I think you're lost

  654. in your moral record.

  655. I think you're lost

  656. in your religion.

  657. And the scary thing is

  658. I don't know

  659. if you know

  660. that you're lost.

  661. See, this is the crux of it.

  662. This is the key of it.

  663. If you are truly to understand

  664. why we gather here,

  665. you must first fully

  666. be able to acknowledge

  667. and articulate

  668. that you are lost.

  669. Jesus came to seek

  670. and save the lost.

  671. And until we are willing

  672. to acknowledge that,

  673. to confess that,

  674. then we don't really truly

  675. understand why we're saved.

  676. Because the next question

  677. would be, well, okay,

  678. you're saved by Jesus.

  679. Well, what is he saving me from?

  680. To truly understand

  681. why Jesus came,

  682. we have to first understand

  683. that we,

  684. as it says in Ephesians 2,

  685. that we were dead

  686. in our trespasses and sins.

  687. We were following

  688. the way of this world.

  689. We were blind.

  690. We were lost.

  691. And I'll tell you,

  692. you will know it.

  693. Maybe as a pastor,

  694. I'll kind of give you

  695. a little secret peek

  696. behind the curtain.

  697. I think I sometimes can tell

  698. when someone who truly

  699. is saved by Jesus

  700. because they know

  701. that they were lost.

  702. It's those who are like,

  703. yeah, I'm a Christian

  704. and then they go ahead

  705. and reel off all the things

  706. that they do in life,

  707. all the impact,

  708. the change that they make,

  709. all the accomplishments

  710. they've had.

  711. And I'm like,

  712. oh, I don't know.

  713. I don't know.

  714. So when you truly understand

  715. your need for grace,

  716. I think some of us

  717. are lost in our parenting.

  718. You see or just

  719. pursuit of family.

  720. Our kids are the first thing.

  721. I bumped into an old friend

  722. this week

  723. and who used to go to church

  724. who no longer goes anymore.

  725. He said,

  726. oh, well,

  727. in this season of my life,

  728. I just need to focus

  729. on my kids

  730. and be present

  731. with my kids.

  732. And it all sounds so right.

  733. And then I find myself

  734. just thinking,

  735. but Jesus is supposed

  736. to be part of that.

  737. Jesus gave you the kids.

  738. Jesus gave you your job

  739. and yet this season

  740. you say,

  741. hey, I can't focus

  742. on Jesus this season

  743. because the job

  744. that he gave me

  745. is taking me away from him.

  746. Is in essence

  747. often what we're trying to say.

  748. The true freedom

  749. that Darren talks about

  750. is the moment you realize

  751. that actually

  752. you are a slave to sin.

  753. You realize that you are actually

  754. just completely consumed

  755. by something

  756. that actually is neutral.

  757. It's a job.

  758. It's money.

  759. But you let that

  760. big thing become God

  761. and then it controls you

  762. and then you don't realize

  763. you're lost.

  764. I love what Danny said there

  765. because it reminded me

  766. of the quote

  767. that Keller said

  768. that this church,

  769. this group of people

  770. is not a museum of saints.

  771. We often feel like it

  772. because we don't know

  773. what everyone is going through

  774. but it's a hospital for sins.

  775. And there's such a joy

  776. that comes with that.

  777. I was reading an account

  778. this week from Typo

  779. of just someone

  780. who waited hours and hours

  781. not knowing whether

  782. there would be anyone

  783. that would save them.

  784. And the moment that came

  785. when a firefighter

  786. walks through the door

  787. that person just filled,

  788. filled with immense gratitude.

  789. Not just that they were

  790. going to be saved

  791. but that someone

  792. actually was risking

  793. their lives to come

  794. and save them.

  795. What if the objective

  796. of the church

  797. is to go and seek

  798. and save

  799. as many people

  800. as we possibly can

  801. because that's what

  802. the Lord called us to do.

  803. And yet we are trapped

  804. in our own comfort.

  805. We are trapped

  806. in our own complacency.

  807. Something else

  808. about being saved,

  809. this post-life insurance policy

  810. that I just talked about,

  811. I feel as though

  812. we have such an anemic,

  813. anemic view

  814. of what being saved

  815. truly means.

  816. Just quoted

  817. John 10.10

  818. that Jesus came

  819. to give us life

  820. and life to the full

  821. and yet you look around

  822. at Christians

  823. outside of incidents

  824. like these

  825. where we are grieving

  826. but you look at us

  827. and you just think

  828. we are miserable.

  829. We are miserable,

  830. we are ungrateful,

  831. we are just concerned

  832. about the worldly things

  833. and it's in those moments

  834. I'm like,

  835. Jesus remind me once again

  836. of the good news.

  837. You came to deal

  838. with death

  839. once and for all.

  840. That you came to save me

  841. when I was lost,

  842. when I needed a savior.

  843. I don't know if there's,

  844. I don't know if actually

  845. being on the pulpit

  846. and preaching

  847. from the word of God

  848. is actually the thing

  849. that convicts you.

  850. I think it's John 16.8,

  851. I think it's

  852. the Holy Spirit comes

  853. and convicts us

  854. of sin and righteousness

  855. to show us,

  856. to remind us

  857. that actually

  858. we need God.

  859. It's that song,

  860. Lord, I need you.

  861. Every moment,

  862. every hour,

  863. I need you.

  864. If we're honest,

  865. if I'm honest,

  866. often it's just,

  867. good God,

  868. I want you

  869. and it's for all

  870. the wrong reasons.

  871. I want you

  872. so I can feel better

  873. about myself.

  874. I want you

  875. so you can pour out

  876. blessings upon me.

  877. I want you

  878. because you help

  879. make sense of my life

  880. for me.

  881. I want you

  882. because you will then

  883. help me get the job

  884. that I really,

  885. really want.

  886. That's why Luke 19.10,

  887. almost if you want

  888. to just distill

  889. the whole book of Luke,

  890. the whole Bible,

  891. it's just,

  892. the Son of Man

  893. came to seek

  894. and save

  895. the lost

  896. and that is you

  897. and I

  898. and when you

  899. realize that,

  900. that's when things

  901. change.

  902. That's when you

  903. realize that actually

  904. being a Christian

  905. isn't just about

  906. following the Ten Commandments.

  907. It's about moving,

  908. graduating from

  909. the Ten Commandments.

  910. You still do

  911. all of the Ten Commandments

  912. but it's moving

  913. from the Commandments

  914. into the Beatitudes.

  915. When you live a life

  916. that is free

  917. because the Spirit

  918. is leading you

  919. to actually rejoice

  920. because you are blessed

  921. when you are poor

  922. in Spirit

  923. for you will inherit

  924. the kingdom of God.

  925. Blessed are those

  926. who mourn

  927. for they shall be comforted.

  928. Blessed are those

  929. who are meek

  930. for they shall inherit

  931. the earth.

  932. When you truly understand

  933. that upside down kingdom,

  934. that's when we can

  935. turn the world

  936. upside down.

  937. The Son of Man

  938. came to seek

  939. and save

  940. the lost.

  941. And you see here,

  942. Zacchaeus

  943. isn't repentant.

  944. At least not yet.

  945. Grace meets him first.

  946. Right?

  947. Grace meets him first.

  948. He's not like,

  949. I must meet Jesus

  950. so I can go and apologize

  951. to him for all the things

  952. that I've done.

  953. No, he just wants to find out

  954. who Jesus is

  955. and he's just going

  956. and then it turns out

  957. actually,

  958. whilst he thinks

  959. he's seeking Jesus,

  960. actually Jesus

  961. has been seeking him

  962. all along.

  963. And so grace meets us

  964. first and then

  965. the repentance comes.

  966. It reminds me of Romans

  967. where it says,

  968. actually,

  969. while we were still sinners,

  970. Christ died for us.

  971. That should fill us

  972. with gratitude.

  973. This is not my own doing.

  974. But my faith

  975. is a gift

  976. from God.

  977. That grace

  978. is completely undeserved.

  979. So the grace

  980. comes before repentance

  981. but repentance

  982. does something

  983. is when you are

  984. truly repentant

  985. your life will turn

  986. upside down

  987. and then it will lead

  988. to action.

  989. And that's why

  990. we love the book of James

  991. because the book of James

  992. is very practical

  993. because all Jameses

  994. are very practical

  995. and we try and live out

  996. our faith.

  997. And it says,

  998. well,

  999. okay,

  1000. you can have faith

1001. but you can't have it

  1002. without works.

  1003. That's not how you're saved

1004. but once you are saved

1005. you can't help but work.

1006. You can't help but do,

1007. you can't help but run

  1008. towards the trouble.

1009. And so what you see

  1010. Zacchaeus doing here

  1011. is actually Jesus

  1012. doesn't really say anything

  1013. other than

1014. I must go to your house

  1015. to have dinner.

  1016. And then Zacchaeus,

  1017. verse 8,

1018. I think he does hear

  1019. everyone else

  1020. kind of grumbling

  1021. because he knows

1022. he's hated by nearly everyone.

  1023. And Zacchaeus stood

1024. and said to the Lord,

  1025. behold, Lord,

1026. the good half of my goods

1027. I give to the poor

1028. and if I have defrauded

  1029. anyone of anything

  1030. I restore it fourfold,

  1031. four times as much.

  1032. Anyone who I've cheated

  1033. I'm going to give

  1034. four times as much

  1035. which actually far surpasses

  1036. the Levitical law

  1037. for when you actually

  1038. wrong someone

  1039. you're supposed to give

  1040. just over 20% back

1041. but here's like four times

  1042. just take it all.

1043. And time and time again

  1044. you see

  1045. everyone who encounters

  1046. who meets Jesus

1047. their life is just turned

  1048. completely upside down.

  1049. So respectfully

  1050. the question I ask

  1051. for all of us

  1052. I ask myself is

1053. is my life upside down?

1054. Do I live in a different way?

1055. When people look at me

  1056. do they go

1057. oh that person is different?

1058. That person is set apart.

  1059. That person is holy.

  1060. If I'm honest

  1061. that's a daily decision.

  1062. It's a daily decision

1063. to take up the cross

1064. and say I will live differently.

  1065. I will be the non-anxious

  1066. presence in the room.

1067. I will be the one

  1068. who is inoffendable.

  1069. You cannot offend me

  1070. because Christ has already

  1071. taken the ultimate

  1072. offense for me.

1073. So say what you will.

1074. Try and cheat your way

  1075. to the promotion

  1076. that I deserve

  1077. it doesn't really matter

1078. because my God is sovereign.

1079. Do we have that kind of faith

  1080. that leads to action

  1081. that leads us

  1082. to react

  1083. in different ways?

1084. Again it comes down to

  1085. do we truly understand

  1086. that we were lost?

1087. Because if we truly understood

  1088. that we were lost

  1089. that we couldn't find

  1090. our own way back

  1091. that someone came

  1092. to find us

  1093. and to seek us

  1094. and to save us

  1095. then actually everything else

  1096. excuse the analogy

  1097. is house money.

  1098. I'm not afraid

  1099. of losing anything

  1100. because I don't have

  1101. anything anymore.

  1102. Everything I have

  1103. is from him.

  1104. That's why even

  1105. the stewardship conversation

1106. about well should it be

1107. 10% or should it be

  1108. well how about this?

1109. How about all of it

  1110. is from God?

  1111. How about everything

  1112. that you have

  1113. is from him?

  1114. Those of us

  1115. who are truly

  1116. understanding

  1117. that we are lost

  1118. will understand

  1119. that actually

  1120. that is true.

  1121. And honestly

  1122. as a parent

  1123. who has struggled

  1124. with the idol

  1125. of parenting

  1126. wanting the best

  1127. for my kids

  1128. honestly

1129. it all comes crashing down

  1130. the moment they enter

  1131. into hospital.

  1132. The moment you realise

1133. that you have no control

  1134. over your kids

  1135. health and safety.

  1136. But sending them

  1137. to Bremer Hill

  1138. will not guarantee

  1139. the job at McKinsey.

  1140. the whole of parenting

  1141. the whole of marriage

  1142. the whole of relationships

  1143. is all about

  1144. just surrendering

  1145. going actually

1146. I am not in control.

  1147. I am lost.

  1148. I am blind.

  1149. I was dead.

  1150. And this is where

  1151. I'll finish.

  1152. Who is Zacchaeus?

1153. Of course the easy one

  1154. is well Zacchaeus

  1155. is you and I.

  1156. But my question is

1157. how do I convince you

  1158. of that?

  1159. What's the story

  1160. behind that?

  1161. If you just take

  1162. a peek with me

  1163. so that passage

  1164. is in Luke 19

  1165. but if you take

  1166. a peek with me

  1167. you see something

  1168. interesting

  1169. in Luke chapter 18

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  1170. Jesus is talking

  1171. about a lot of

  1172. different things

  1173. but he's talking

  1174. about the parable

  1175. of a persistent widow.

1176. Hey do not lose heart

  1177. keep praying

  1178. keep praying

  1179. because God hears you.

  1180. Chapter 18

  1181. verse 8

  1182. says this

  1183. nevertheless

1184. when the son of man

  1185. comes will he

  1186. find faith on earth.

  1187. That is what

  1188. he's looking for.

  1189. He's not looking

  1190. for perfect people.

  1191. He's not looking

  1192. for people who

  1193. truly get it

  1194. and are living

  1195. good Christian lives.

1196. There is no such thing.

  1197. He's looking for faith.

1198. None of us can jump

  1199. to the moon

  1200. let alone heaven.

1201. It's do you have faith

  1202. in the one

  1203. who is the bridge?

  1204. The one who said

  1205. I am the way

  1206. the truth

  1207. and the life

  1208. you will only

  1209. get to the father

  1210. through me.

  1211. He's looking

  1212. for faith.

  1213. And then

  1214. verse 9

  1215. in chapter 18

  1216. still

  1217. he does

  1218. another parable

  1219. and he talks

  1220. about the Pharisee

  1221. and the tax collector

  1222. the Pharisee

  1223. who has given up

  1224. his life.

  1225. Again

  1226. we hate too much

  1227. on the Pharisees

  1228. because they are

  1229. such good people

  1230. they have such

  1231. good intentions

  1232. they've sacrificed

  1233. their whole lives

  1234. committed their lives

  1235. to studying

  1236. the word of God

  1237. living a life

  1238. that is set apart

  1239. and different.

  1240. They just didn't

  1241. understand that

  1242. Jesus was the answer

  1243. to all of this.

  1244. they searched

  1245. the scriptures

  1246. they just didn't

  1247. know that he

  1248. was the key

  1249. to eternal life.

  1250. But it's funny

  1251. we all have

  1252. those of us

  1253. who have been

  1254. in the church

  1255. for a long time

  1256. we all have

  1257. that Pharisee

  1258. inside us

  1259. because we look

  1260. at someone else

  1261. we look at someone

  1262. else and we go

  1263. hmm

  1264. at least I'm

  1265. not that person.

  1266. I have sinned

  1267. I am still sinning

  1268. but at least I'm

  1269. not sinning

  1270. as bad as him

  1271. or her.

  1272. And Jesus is

  1273. saying no no no

  1274. that tax collector

  1275. he can't even

  1276. look up to God

  1277. and he's beating

  1278. his chest

  1279. and he's saying

  1280. God be merciful

  1281. to me

  1282. a sinner.

  1283. And he says

  1284. for everyone

  1285. who exalts

  1286. himself will be

  1287. humble

  1288. but the one

  1289. who humbles

  1290. himself will be

  1291. exalted.

  1292. Can you see

  1293. the upside down

  1294. nature again

  1295. of how Jesus

  1296. looks at things?

  1297. And then he says

  1298. little children

  1299. come to me.

  1300. So I loved

  1301. what my brother

  1302. said that actually

  1303. we value the

  1304. next generation

  1305. we pursue the

  1306. next generation

  1307. we want to

  1308. create space

  1309. for the next

  1310. generation.

  1311. That's why

  1312. honestly it feels

  1313. just as crowded

  1314. in here

  1315. but at least

  1316. we know

  1317. that upstairs

  1318. we have this

  1319. space where

  1320. the kids

  1321. can feel

  1322. valued.

  1323. And again

  1324. in that culture

  1325. it would have

  1326. been hey kids

  1327. get away

  1328. do you know

  1329. who this guy

  1330. is?

  1331. He's going

  1332. to be

  1333. internationally

  1334. renowned.

  1335. Get away

  1336. from him

  1337. he has nothing

  1338. to say to

  1339. you.

  1340. And then

  1341. Jesus says

  1342. no no no

  1343. you've got it

  1344. wrong again.

  1345. Let the little

  1346. children come to

  1347. me.

  1348. And then of

  1349. course the

  1350. rich guy

  1351. comes.

  1352. The rich guy

  1353. that everyone

  1354. would have

  1355. known and

  1356. everyone would

  1357. have respected

  1358. and everyone

  1359. wanted to be

  1360. friends with.

  1361. And this

  1362. rich guy

  1363. actually seems

  1364. like a nice

  1365. guy.

  1366. Good teacher

  1367. what must I

  1368. do to

  1369. inherit eternal

  1370. life?

  1371. And then

  1372. Jesus says

  1373. well wait

  1374. why are you

  1375. calling me

  1376. good?

  1377. There's only

  1378. one who's

  1379. good.

  1380. And this

  1381. guy says

  1382. I have

  1383. done

  1384. everything.

  1385. And Jesus

  1386. says well

  1387. you know

  1388. the commandments

  1389. do not

  1390. commit adultery

  1391. do not

  1392. murder

  1393. do not

  1394. steal

  1395. do not

  1396. bear

  1397. false

  1398. witness

  1399. honor your

  1400. father and

  1401. mother.

  1402. And verse

  1403. 21 the

  1404. rich guy

  1405. says all

  1406. these I have

  1407. kept from

  1408. my youth.

  1409. I have not

  1410. skipped a

  1411. single youth

  1412. group.

  1413. I've gone

  1414. to church

  1415. every Sunday.

  1416. I've even

  1417. helped with

  1418. AV.

  1419. I've helped

  1420. with the

  1421. kids.

  1422. Gone to

  1423. BSF.

  1424. Led us

  1425. through

  1426. Leviticus.

  1427. I've done

  1428. everything.

  1429. And then

  1430. Jesus says

  1431. one thing

  1432. you lack.

  1433. And this

  1434. is what

  1435. sends

  1436. chills down

  1437. every person

  1438. who has

  1439. any kind

  1440. of possessions.

  1441. One thing

  1442. you lack

  1443. sell all

  1444. that you

  1445. have and

  1446. distribute

  1447. to the

  1448. poor and

  1449. you will

  1450. have treasure

  1451. in heaven

  1452. and come

  1453. follow me.

  1454. It's I

  1455. know what

  1456. you've given

  1457. but you're

  1458. still holding

  1459. back.

  1460. Do you

  1461. understand

  1462. it's not

  1463. about what

  1464. you can

  1465. give or

  1466. what you

  1467. can do.

  1468. It's not

  1469. about how

  1470. good you've

  1471. been.

  1472. The one

  1473. thing that

  1474. you're holding

  1475. back from

  1476. me, that's

  1477. the thing

  1478. that I

  1479. want.

  1480. I want

  1481. your heart.

  1482. Actually, we

  1483. don't quite

  1484. know where

  1485. that guy

  1486. ends up

  1487. because Jesus

  1488. says something

  1489. says.

  1490. He says

  1491. verse 23,

  1492. but when

  1493. he heard

  1494. these things

  1495. he became

  1496. very sad

  1497. for he

  1498. was

  1499. extremely

  1500. rich.

  1501. Jesus

  1502. seeing

  1503. that he

  1504. had

  1505. become

  1506. sad

  1507. said

  1508. how

  1509. difficult

  1510. it

  1511. is

  1512. for those

  1513. who have

  1514. wealth

  1515. to enter

  1516. the kingdom

  1517. of God

  1518. for it

  1519. is easier

  1520. for a camel

  1521. to go

  1522. through the

  1523. eye of a

  1524. needle

  1525. than for a

  1526. rich person

  1527. to enter

  1528. the kingdom

  1529. of God.

  1530. Now

  1531. that's

  1532. sad.

  1533. He's

  1534. sad,

  1535. yes,

  1536. but I

  1537. can see

  1538. how sad

  1539. Jesus is

  1540. because

  1541. Jesus

  1542. until he

  1543. realizes

  1544. that everything

  1545. that he

  1546. has comes

  1547. from me

  1548. he's not

  1549. going to

  1550. truly get

  1551. it.

  1552. He still

  1553. lacks that

  1554. one thing

  1555. faith in

  1556. me,

  1557. not in

  1558. money,

  1559. not in

  1560. politics,

  1561. not in

  1562. status,

  1563. not in

  1564. wealth,

  1565. in me.

  1566. That's the

  1567. one thing

  1568. that he

  1569. lacks

  1570. because he

  1571. thinks he

  1572. has it

  1573. but he

  1574. doesn't.

  1575. And then

  1576. the rest

  1577. of the

  1578. people who

  1579. are less

  1580. rich

  1581. than this

  1582. guy

  1583. say,

  1584. well,

  1585. what chance

  1586. do we all

  1587. have?

  1588. What hope

  1589. do we have?

  1590. Then who

  1591. can be

  1592. saved?

  1593. But then

  1594. Jesus says

  1595. this,

  1596. what is

  1597. impossible

  1598. with man

  1599. is possible

  1600. with God.

  1601. Carrying

  1602. on,

  1603. chapter 18,

  1604. he meets

  1605. a blind

  1606. beggar and

  1607. the blind

  1608. beggar,

  1609. again,

  1610. the same

  1611. spirit as

  1612. the parable

  1613. of the

  1614. tax collector

  1615. says,

  1616. Jesus,

  1617. son of

  1618. God,

  1619. have mercy

  1620. on me,

  1621. have mercy

  1622. on me.

  1623. People

  1624. telling him

  1625. to be

  1626. quiet,

  1627. but he

  1628. says,

  1629. no,

  1630. have mercy

  1631. on me,

  1632. I will

  1633. not be

  1634. silent,

  1635. I need

  1636. you,

  1637. Lord,

  1638. I need

  1639. you,

  1640. I need

  1641. to be

  1642. saved,

  1643. I'm

  1644. it's

  1645. funny,

  1646. if you

  1647. look at

  1648. the whole

  1649. context of

  1650. the scripture

  1651. here,

  1652. you've got

  1653. the persistent

  1654. widow,

  1655. you've got

  1656. the parable

  1657. of the

  1658. Pharisee

  1659. and the

  1660. tax collector,

  1661. you've got

  1662. the children,

  1663. you've got

  1664. the rich

  1665. ruler,

  1666. you've got

  1667. the person

  1668. who can't

  1669. see,

  1670. and almost

  1671. to hammer

  1672. home his

  1673. teaching point,

  1674. he meets

  1675. Zacchaeus,

  1676. who was

  1677. rich,

  1678. who couldn't

  1679. see,

  1680. who couldn't

  1681. get to

  1682. Jesus by

  1683. himself,

  1684. so had to

  1685. become as

  1686. a child to

  1687. climb up on

  1688. to the

  1689. tree,

  1690. and though

  1691. it does

  1692. seem very

  1693. hard to

  1694. reach this

  1695. Jesus,

  1696. with man it

  1697. is impossible,

  1698. but with

  1699. God it

  1700. is possible,

  1701. he almost

  1702. hammers home

  1703. that point,

  1704. don't you

  1705. love a

  1706. teacher who

  1707. just lives

  1708. out what

  1709. they teach,

  1710. and says,

  1711. hey I've

  1712. just told

  1713. you how

  1714. hard it

  1715. is for

  1716. you,

  1717. but now

  1718. I'm going

  1719. to show

  1720. you that

  1721. actually,

  1722. it's me

  1723. that's going

  1724. to save

  1725. you,

  1726. look at

  1727. Zacchaeus,

  1728. he couldn't

  1729. see me,

  1730. he couldn't

  1731. get to me

  1732. by himself,

  1733. but I

  1734. have come

  1735. for him,

  1736. and if

  1737. he's come

  1738. for Zacchaeus,

  1739. he's come

  1740. for us,

  1741. we just

  1742. need to

  1743. have the

  1744. heart and

  1745. the repentance

  1746. of Zacchaeus,

  1747. to recognize

  1748. that truly

  1749. there was

  1750. someone who

  1751. decided to

  1752. give up his

  1753. life,

  1754. the son of

  1755. man came

  1756. to take

  1757. our place,

  1758. who stands

  1759. with us

  1760. in the

  1761. deepest

  1762. grief,

  1763. and so

  1764. that even

  1765. though we

  1766. walk through

  1767. the valley

  1768. of the

  1769. shadow of

  1770. death,

  1771. we do

  1772. not fear

  1773. evil,

  1774. we do

  1775. not fear

  1776. anything,

  1777. because the

  1778. shadows are

  1779. only just

  1780. that,

  1781. they are

  1782. just

  1783. shadows,

  1784. death is

  1785. not the

  1786. end.

  1787. Do we

  1788. believe that?

  1789. Do we

  1790. understand that

  1791. truly in

  1792. our hearts?

  1793. If we do,

  1794. I think if we

  1795. truly understand

  1796. why Jesus

  1797. came,

  1798. if we

  1799. truly understand

  1800. that we

  1801. would then

  1802. understand why

  1803. we are here,

  1804. why we are

  1805. gathered here,

  1806. and what we

  1807. must be to

  1808. those around

  1809. us,

  1810. to be the

  1811. light of

  1812. the world.

  1813. All he

  1814. needs is

  1815. faith.

  1816. Final,

  1817. final thing.

  1818. Jesus,

  1819. in the book

  1820. of Revelation,

  1821. talks to the

  1822. different churches,

  1823. and the one

  1824. that maybe is

  1825. the most famous

  1826. is in chapter

  1827. three where he

  1828. says,

  1829. you guys are

  1830. all lukewarm.

  1831. Lukewarm,

  1832. it just doesn't

  1833. taste nice,

  1834. it's just,

  1835. I'd rather spit

  1836. you out of

  1837. my mouth.

  1838. because you

  1839. don't get it.

  1840. You don't

  1841. realize that

  1842. you're lost.

  1843. You don't

  1844. realize that

  1845. you're blind.

  1846. But then,

  1847. he doesn't

  1848. finish there

  1849. and kind of

  1850. close his

  1851. Bible and

  1852. extend the

  1853. sermon there.

  1854. He says,

  1855. behold,

  1856. I stand at

  1857. the door

  1858. and knock.

  1859. Anyone who

  1860. opens the

  1861. door,

  1862. I will come

  1863. in and I

  1864. will sit

  1865. with him

  1866. and eat

  1867. with him.

  1868. Just like

  1869. he did

  1870. with Zacchaeus,

  1871. he does

  1872. with us.

  1873. The trick

  1874. here,

  1875. and this

  1876. is where

  1877. the gathering

  1878. scattering

  1879. paradigm comes

  1880. back into

  1881. play.

  1882. We've been

  1883. invited to

  1884. sit at the

  1885. table with

  1886. Jesus,

  1887. but there

  1888. are so many

  1889. people out

  1890. there who

  1891. don't know

  1892. him,

  1893. who haven't

  1894. been invited

  1895. to the

  1896. table yet,

  1897. who actually

  1898. know they

  1899. are invited,

  1900. but aren't

  1901. able to

  1902. come in

  1903. for whatever

  1904. reason.

  1905. Would we

  1906. just enjoy

  1907. the time

  1908. that we

  1909. have with

  1910. the Lord

  1911. in these

  1912. times here

  1913. on these

  1914. Sunday mornings,

  1915. but then can

  1916. we go out

  1917. and live

  1918. with the sense

  1919. of urgency,

  1920. live with the

  1921. sense of

  1922. conviction that

  1923. is appropriate

  1924. in response to

  1925. what our Lord

  1926. came to do.

  1927. Can I pray

  1928. for us?

  1929. Lord, that is

  1930. the reason why

  1931. you came,

  1932. to seek and

  1933. to save the

  1934. lost.

  1935. We sit here

  1936. grateful for

  1937. that because

  1938. we were

  1939. lost.

  1940. Sometimes we

  1941. still are

  1942. lost.

  1943. Holy Spirit,

  1944. would you

  1945. stir up in

  1946. our hearts

  1947. a passion

  1948. for your

  1949. name

  1950. and a

  1951. passion for

  1952. the people

  1953. in this

  1954. city.

  1955. that we

  1956. would welcome

  1957. them just

  1958. like you

  1959. welcomed us,

  1960. that we

  1961. would pursue

  1962. them just

  1963. like you

  1964. pursued us.

  1965. because there

  1966. truly is good

  1967. news.

  1968. Even though

  1969. every time I

  1970. open up this

  1971. SCMP app and

  1972. I hold my

  1973. breath as I

  1974. anticipate more

  1975. bad news,

  1976. I remember

  1977. that there is

  1978. truly, truly

  1979. good news that

  1980. surpasses all

  1981. the bad news.

  1982. And as Joe

  1983. prayed earlier,

  1984. that we would

  1985. be people who

  1986. hold those

  1987. things in

  1988. tension,

  1989. that we

  1990. would be

  1991. people of

  1992. grief because

  1993. the world is

  1994. broken.

  1995. But that there

  1996. would be hope,

  1997. there would be

  1998. gratitude.

  1999. And that we

  2000. can truly say

  2001. as one body,

  2002. blessed be the

  2003. God and

  2004. Father of our

  2005. Lord Jesus

  2006. Christ.

  2007. According to

  2008. his great

  2009. mercy,

  2010. he has

  2011. caused us to

  2012. be born

  2013. again to

  2014. a living

  2015. hope through

  2016. the resurrection

  2017. of Jesus

  2018. Christ from

  2019. the dead,

  2020. to an

  2021. inheritance that

  2022. is imperishable,

  2023. undefiled,

  2024. and unfading,

  2025. kept in

  2026. heaven for

  2027. us.

  2028. God who

  2029. didn't just die

  2030. die, but

  2031. who also

  2032. lives.

  2033. Thank you,

  2034. Lord, we

  2035. worship you,

  2036. our living hope.

  2037. you
