  1. Good morning, everyone. We're going to continue this new year just talking about what church is.

  2. ! Recognising we, a lot of us have been to church for a long time, have a lot of different experiences with church,

  3. but really, do we really stop and think and force ourselves to go, well, why is it that we gather? What is it really all about?

  4. And you look to the person next to you and go, well, actually, I, that thought there, that actually, in order for you to be a Christian,

  5. you need the person who sat next to you. You can't do it on your own. We have this idea that we can,

  6. that you can become a good Christian on your own if you have the disciplines and you do good deeds.

  7. And the Bible doesn't say that. John Wesley was the one who was famous in saying that the Bible knows nothing of solitary religion.

  8. The Bible knows nothing of solitary religion. And last week, we were trying to start that conversation.

  9. What does it mean? Why are you here? Why are we here together? Sat in this space on a Sunday morning.

  10. What's it all about? And I said last week, another quote was actually, sanctification is a community project.

  11. Sanctification is this process that every believer goes on, which is you become more like Christ as you get closer and closer to meeting him.

  12. And you can't do it on your own. It is a community project. If you are to be a good Christian, you must follow the greatest commandment and the Great Commission.

  13. Right. That's pretty standard. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

  14. And to love your neighbor as yourself. That's the great commandment.

  15. And then to follow the Great Commission, which is to go and make disciples of all nations.

  16. In order to do both of those things, you need people. You cannot do it without people.

  17. So that's what we've been talking about. And what does it actually mean for us to be with people?

  18. And actually, this is not a foreign concept. This isn't one that, let's say, is exclusive to Christians.

  19. Outside, we all know that we need people. Studies are done on what are some of people's greatest fears.

  20. And of course, fear of death is one of them. But if you go into that further, what about how they die?

  21. And the greatest fear, studies will show that actually the greatest fear is when we die, that we are dying alone.

  22. That is the greatest fear that we as humans have.

  23. Or if you've watched the Netflix show, I think it's called Live to 100, talking about the centenarians around the world.

  24. Which places in the world has people that live to 100 years old?

  25. And you look at all the different characteristics that they have to get to 100 years old.

  26. Of course, it's diet. Of course, it's exercise. But what's the key trait?

  27. Community. People.

  28. We need to have people around us. We were made in that way.

  29. We were made from community. In Genesis 1, when the Trinity, the Godhead, says to itself, saying,

  30. Let us make man in our image.

  31. We were made from community, and we were made for community.

  32. Which, again, really is very contradictory and in conflict with the way of the world, which is,

  33. it is all about you.

  34. Can you become an autonomous, independent, individualistic person where you pursue your own goals,

  35. where you are defined by yourself, where everything is about yourself?

  36. If you focus on yourself, you will find true satisfaction.

  37. We are the most narcissistic generation there has been in mankind.

  38. And yet we find that the more we focus on ourselves, the less happy, the less content, the less satisfied we are with ourselves.

  39. One of my favourite TED Talks was one I watched 10 years ago.

  40. I think it was around 10 to 12 years ago.

  41. And it's on the cure to addiction.

  42. It actually has 12 million views.

  43. And of course, maybe aside of the ethical values, what they did was they did research on lab rats who were addicted to heroin.

  44. And they tried to see what were the different ways to help get these rats out, to cure them of addiction.

  45. And they tried different things.

  46. They tried distractions.

  47. They tried putting them into cages that they could have lots of different things to do and just to keep themselves entertained.

  48. Or just to go cold turkey.

  49. Pull the drug away from them.

  50. What would they do then?

  51. And it's interesting.

  52. What it came to it was the solution to addiction wasn't to go cold turkey.

  53. It wasn't abstinence.

  54. But it was connection.

  55. Once they found that they could put these animals together with others, once they had found connection and community, they had a much higher chance of surviving.

  56. Isn't that interesting?

  57. It is about how we be together.

  58. But last week I said, as Christians, it's not just about doing life together.

  59. It's not just about running clubs where we can have people who, some people like board games, so they'll sit on a Friday evening and play board games together.

  60. That isn't what Christians, that's not only what we do.

  61. We've got a group of us who are going to play football later.

  62. It's not just doing football.

  63. Actually, the world does societies and clubs pretty well as well.

  64. There's got to be more in terms of how we actually do it.

  65. Over Christmas we were talking about this concept of loneliness.

  66. The consequences of loneliness.

  67. Or the factors contributing to it.

  68. The effects of loneliness, especially through COVID, are as dire as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, linked to diabetes, cancer, heart disease.

  69. When we talk about being Christians, what we're talking about is how can we be Christians together?

  70. How can we be part of the body together?

  71. The quote from N.T. Wright says this,

  72. The work of Jesus is not simply to save isolated individuals and so perpetuate their isolation, but to create a new people, a kingdom community that lives under his rule.

  73. The Christian faith solves loneliness.

  74. Jesus solves loneliness by drawing us closer to each other and closer to him.

  75. And when we get closer together, two things happen.

  76. One, we feel a sense of belonging and intimacy.

  77. And then the second is we feel a sense of annoyance and frustration.

  78. Because the closer we get to people, the married couples, Flo and Julian, just looking at each other straight away.

  79. Just going, oh, I need you, but I don't like you.

  80. I love you, but living with you is hard.

  81. Right?

  82. So married couples are all just nodding in agreement to that.

  83. And then you think, okay, well, I chose to live with you.

  84. I was actually attracted to you.

  85. But the rest of you here, all these people here staring at each other, that's hard.

  86. So what's the secret to that?

  87. How can, this is the thing.

  88. If you look at the person next to you, whether you know them or not, has it ever occurred to you that you can only be more like Christ if you're sat next to them?

  89. If you're with them.

  90. That it is impossible for you to look more and more like Christ on your own.

  91. As you look across at each other now, you go, wow, in order for me to look like Christ, I must be with you here.

  92. I must sit with you here.

  93. That's an interesting thought.

  94. And actually, so this year I'm trying to do something different.

  95. It's trying to involve some more voices so you don't get sick of mine.

  96. But to really hear from the body, to hear kind of how we're responding to this.

  97. And actually, I was supposed to do it last week, but I kind of overran.

  98. And so he didn't get a chance to do it.

  99. So actually, today we're going to have Sam come up.

  100. And as he was listening to the message yesterday, and we're kind of going, this is, if you look at last week and this week, it's kind of like part one and part two.

  101. It's kind of the same theme.

  102. So I'm actually going to invite Sam up now just to share a few reflections of him.

  103. And as you look at him, two things.

  104. First is, what is he saying and how is he responding to the message?

  105. One.

  106. And two is, oh, maybe I could do something like that too.

  107. So it's something that actually I would love for us to be able to hear from each other.

  108. So give him a round of applause just to encourage him.

  109. Sam, you had some thoughts from the message last week and that kind of ties into this week.

  110. Would you mind just ministering to us and sharing with us what the Lord spoke to you about?

  111. Sure.

  112. One thing I noticed about James is he really uses a lot of quotes and a lot from C.S. Lewis, right?

  113. So I sat there in the back thinking last week and something from C.S. Lewis's The Four Loves came to me.

  114. And that's when C.S. Lewis was writing about his friends.

  115. If you know the life of C.S. Lewis, he had some really amazing friends like J.R.L. Tolkien, the writer of The Lord of the Rings, who brings him to Christ.

  116. But in The Four Loves, he writes about two other friends of his, Ronald and Charles.

  117. And they're a tight-knit group of friends.

  118. And when Charles passed away, he thinks to himself and he writes, I think my relationship with Ronald is just going to be so much more deeper.

  119. And he completely finds the opposite to be true.

  120. When his friend passes, there's a part of Ronald, a part of himself he realizes that dies along with this friend.

  121. That hits home.

  122. My wife makes fun of me.

  123. Like, when you're with your friends, there's a completely different side of you that comes out.

  124. And that is a side of me.

  125. That's a side that is brought out.

  126. And similarly, that must be true for all of us, that the community around us brings out who we are.

  127. And sometimes, who we need to really address.

  128. The parts of ourselves that, you know what, that's not Christ-like.

  129. That's why I need you.

  130. Please speak the truth and love to me.

  131. So where does this lead us?

  132. For me, it brings me to Isaiah.

  133. Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  134. And this is where Isaiah is having a vision.

  135. And he sees the throne of God.

  136. Isaiah 6, 3.

  137. And it's describing the seraphim, the angels.

  138. And one called to another and said,

  139. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.

  140. The whole earth is full of his glory.

  141. Just now we're singing, holy, holy, right?

  142. There is no one like you.

  143. Scripture here says that the angels are calling out to each other.

  144. And one called to another.

  145. They're at the throne.

  146. They're worshiping God.

  147. But yet they're talking with one another.

  148. They're conversing with another.

  149. There's something about knowing the Lord that requires us not to just look at him one dimensionally in our own understanding, with our own lens, our own experiences.

  150. But it's through someone else.

  151. And that's a challenge.

  152. Why do we come to church?

  153. Why do we get ourselves into what sometimes feel like a really uncomfortable situation?

  154. It's because I cannot know God unless I see him through the way you experience him.

  155. One more scripture comes to mind.

  156. Jesus is praying.

  157. In Luke 10, he says,

  158. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children.

  159. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  160. We send the kids upstairs.

  161. I send my kids upstairs.

  162. And then there's also something beautiful about the way they are learning.

  163. They're worshiping.

  164. That the way they're understanding God is something I should be taking in.

  165. It's not just to be puffed up with knowledge.

  166. But I guess our hope is that as we come in week in, week out, it might sound like this was the worst week.

  167. I'm in the wilderness.

  168. I'm in the desert.

  169. And someone speaks and says, God's with you in the desert.

  170. It's not in vain.

  171. Those mercies, they're new every day.

  172. And you're like, I don't feel it.

  173. And someone says, nope, that's true.

  174. I'm with you.

  175. God's there.

  176. Jesus was tested.

  177. And we need to hear that truth.

  178. And on those best weeks, we come back in and we come in with joy.

  179. And we share that joy with others, too.

  180. For me, that's the picture here.

  181. That we need to see the Lord as the angels do.

  182. Worshiping at the throne and also encouraging one another.

  183. Thank you.

  184. And it is such a great quote when C.S. Lewis says that, right?

  185. When you meet someone.

  186. And that's why I love meeting people and then meeting their families and meeting their relatives.

  187. Because you see something in them that's just different.

  188. You see a different side to them.

  189. And so, I mean, you'll see this with me.

  190. I had the privilege of having breakfast with Jay this morning.

  191. And every time I talk to him, there's this hunger and yearning to how do I become more like a follower of Christ?

  192. How do I choose faith over fear?

  193. And what does that look like?

  194. And as I find myself counseling him, I'm reminded of the journeys that I've been on.

  195. And actually, even right now, the challenges that I face.

  196. And so he brings that out in me.

  197. If you hung out with me and Gabs, you would see the British Nigerian side come out in me.

  198. That's always been there.

  199. When you see me hang out with my friend Joe Lou over there, just the heart of discipleship comes out.

  200. And you'll see that side of me more.

  201. If you see me hang out with Wes, you'll just see my stupidity kind of just rise up to the surface.

  202. And same when I hang out with Matthew.

  203. Just the bad jokes that just keep coming when I see Matthew.

  204. And so every time you hang out with me with someone different, you'll see a different side of me.

  205. Isn't that just part of what we're supposed to do?

  206. And that's the danger.

  207. When you live in isolation spiritually, then you're just kind of listening to your own voice.

  208. And it becomes your own chamber.

  209. And actually, there is no growing.

  210. And of course, the problem here is when you hang out with other people, you do hear other voices.

  211. And sometimes those voices you don't like hearing.

  212. Sometimes they're right.

  213. And sometimes they're wrong.

  214. But I would say that if sanctification truly is a community project,

  215. and I think it's God's chosen favored project on how he molds us.

  216. Maybe his top, top one is suffering.

  217. He allows suffering to happen to us, to wake us up, to help us see clearly, to become sober-minded.

  218. But the second one has to be community.

  219. Just when he puts people around you, that's how you are molded.

  220. You become, I mean, there's a quote that I've often liked, which is,

  221. you are an average of the five people you spend the most time with.

  222. For some of you, that is a very terrifying concept.

  223. As you think about the five, let's just remove family from this.

  224. Of course, family has a huge, huge effect on who we are.

  225. But let's just talk about your five friends that you hang out with now.

  226. Those five people, you are an average of them.

  227. That's terrifying.

  228. Sometimes.

  229. For some of you.

  230. Have a think about that.

  231. So it just shows you how much we are in need and affected by community.

  232. I want to put some other leaders on the spot now.

  233. So if you're a leader in the gathering who leads a life group,

  234. I like to just have you prepare.

  235. When I think about spiritual community,

  236. when I ask you what spiritual community is to you, what comes to mind?

  237. You guys who are committed to investing and being with people on a week-to-week basis,

  238. what comes to mind for you when you're thinking about why you do it?

  239. What are some of the benefits of it?

  240. Or what are some of the real pain points of it?

  241. Wes, why don't we start with you?

  242. When you think about spiritual community, what comes to mind for you?

  243. What are some of the things that you do?

  244. Challenging each other.

  245. When you know each other well enough and you go,

  246. hey, I know you and you're better than this.

  247. You need to do this.

  248. You need to stop doing this.

  249. That's got to be something that is part of it.

  250. That's how we're going to grow together, right?

  251. That's how we're going to grow.

  252. Kelly, what about you?

  253. Growing together.

  254. When you're challenging each other, then you're growing.

  255. And then hopefully after one year, actually you're a different person.

  256. And that's with people who you love.

  257. And that's also with people that you find hard.

  258. It's both.

  259. And so we need those people around us to actually help us to actually grow in that way.

  260. Gaps, what about you?

  261. A place of safety and vulnerability.

  262. A place of safety and vulnerability.

  263. Which is so hard to find.

  264. Because we're so afraid that when we share something about us,

  265. people will look at us different and go, wait, really?

  266. Oh, that's just, you're on your own.

  267. Right.

  268. But actually we find nearly always that's not the case.

  269. That actually when we are willing to step out and go, hey, I'm struggling with this.

  270. You're like, oh, I'm actually not alone.

  271. Again, that's the other C.S. Lewis quote.

  272. Quote, friendship is when you look at someone else and you go, what, you two?

  273. You're the same as me?

  274. That's when friendship is born.

  275. And when we look at scripture, we talk about, okay, I keep talking about this.

  276. It's the name of the church.

  277. Let's choose to gather.

  278. Let's choose to be an ecclesia, an assembly, which is what that word means,

  279. where we just choose to gather, where we choose to use our time together,

  280. to spend time worshipping God together.

  281. When you think about scripture, are there any passages that come out that kind of like,

  282. well, that's what it talks about.

  283. Maybe the top one that I hear a lot is Hebrews 10, where it says,

  284. don't stop meeting with one another.

  285. Consider how to stir each other up in love and good works,

  286. encouraging each other as the day draws near.

  287. That's kind of the ones that come to mind, right?

  288. That's why we keep meeting together, keep gathering.

  289. But then as I was praying this week, what do we share from that passage?

  290. I realized actually there's a whole ton of context there

  291. that maybe we would be good to really look into,

  292. to find out actually not only how we gather and what we do when we gather,

  293. but actually why we do it in the first place.

  294. And of course we have the mission statements that help us somewhat.

  295. But really, I realized Hebrews 10, we pick that little bit in the middle,

  296. 24 to 25, and talk about, hey, don't stop meeting each other.

  297. But then actually we maybe neglect to think why.

  298. What's the point of this?

  299. Why did we need to do this?

  300. So today I'm going to invite us to stand for the word of the Lord

  301. as Jasper's going to minister to us with the word.

  302. And he's going to read to us from Hebrews chapter 10, verse 19 to 25.

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  303. Hebrews chapter 10, verse 19 to 25.

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  304. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  305. by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain,

  306. that is, through his flesh.

  307. And since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  308. let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith,

  309. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience,

  310. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  311. Let us hold fast to confession of our hope without wavering.

  312. For he who promises faithful.

  313. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.

  314. Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some,

  315. but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

  316. This is the word of the Lord.

  317. Praise be to God.

  318. Thank you, Jasper.

  319. Please take a seat.

  320. So that's it.

  321. Don't stop meeting with one another.

  322. Consider how to stir each other up in love and good works,

  323. and encourage each other as the day draws near.

  324. Okay, that's what we're supposed to do.

  325. So we keep meeting.

  326. So we keep spending time together.

  327. And we've all been there where you're like,

  328. oh, I could do with just staying at home today,

  329. but I'm going to choose to drag myself out.

  330. And the moment you drag yourself out,

  331. you're like, oh, I'm so glad that I'm here.

  332. Okay, this happens, again, not just in spiritual communities.

  333. It happens in my Saturday 7 a.m. basketball runs.

  334. I'm like, I don't want to get out of bed.

  335. But the moment I drag myself out, once I'm there,

  336. I'm like, actually, I really enjoy playing basketball

  337. with other people around rather than just me.

  338. The concept is actually the same.

  339. But we look at this,

  340. and I almost see this as a starter pack for community.

  341. Okay, so if last week Acts 2, 42 to 47,

  342. is kind of like the blueprint of what a community should look like.

  343. It devotes itself to teaching fellowship, breaking bread, prayers.

  344. They're filled with reverence and awe.

  345. They are glad and generous in their hearts,

  346. and they're praising, and they have favor with all people.

  347. That's like, wow, that's the perfect church

  348. that didn't last more than two, three chapters.

  349. But that's what we're aiming for.

  350. That's the blueprint.

  351. This, I would say, is the starter pack.

  352. It's the basic requirement of what it means

  353. to actually be a people who are actually gathering together.

  354. Because something else has happened,

  355. likely in at least half of the group here,

  356. is that you've spent some time

  357. in some kind of Christian community before,

  358. and then you have struggled because there has been problems,

  359. because there is a lack of commitment,

  360. or there is just a lack of interest,

  361. or priorities, or distractions, or actually conflict.

  362. There are all these things that have happened

  363. that have caused you to, you know what?

  364. I'm just going to stop meeting people.

  365. I think I can do this Christian life on my own.

  366. And John Wesley would disagree with you

  367. because there is no such thing as a solitary religion.

  368. Of course, there is solitude, and we need that.

  369. Jesus showed us that.

  370. But every time after solitude,

  371. he goes back to being with the people.

  372. Can you imagine those conversations

  373. that Jesus would have had with God

  374. when he was praying on his own?

  375. He's like, hey, God, it's time.

  376. It's been good with you.

  377. But I've got to go back to those idiots

  378. because I love those idiots.

  379. And I need to spend time with those people.

  380. It's the same kind of thing here.

  381. So we have to keep doing that.

  382. But I would say, okay, so if we look,

  383. open up your Bibles if you've got that there.

  384. And of course, I was joking with Florence this week

  385. about just the fact that Bible apps

  386. are just not the way or the truth or the life,

  387. and they're just fake.

  388. But I'll tell you the reason why.

  389. The reason why is when you look on your screen,

  390. and don't worry, I'm not going to judge you that much

  391. as I see you scrolling on your screen, Caleb,

  392. with your pink bag.

  393. Oh, he's got a Bible as well.

  394. Don't worry.

  395. Caleb's got a Bible.

  396. When you look on, when you look,

  397. the reason why I'm hating is because

  398. when you look on your phone,

  399. you can see one passage, correct?

  400. You can see this.

  401. So Hebrews 10, you can just see this.

  402. And that's all you see.

  403. But the beauty of Scripture,

  404. the beauty of paper, ladies and gentlemen,

  405. is you get to see the context.

  406. You get to see all of the chapter.

  407. You get to see why it's there.

  408. Because when you look on the,

  409. I'd be like, okay, therefore, brothers,

  410. verse 19, since we have confidence,

  411. wait, wait, wait, wait.

  412. And of course, it's a little bit cheesy,

  413. but hey, whenever you see the word therefore,

  414. you have to ask, what's it there for?

  415. Okay?

  416. Because why else is he saying therefore?

  417. So then suddenly you've got to go,

  418. wait, I want to look at the bigger picture.

  419. This passage that I'm just about to print out

  420. and turn into a fridge magnet,

  421. I now have to look in the whole context

  422. and go, what's this actually about?

  423. It's telling me to not stop meeting.

  424. But why?

  425. How?

  426. Because I've met groups before

  427. and eventually I've been tempted to stop

  428. because it's just too hard.

  429. Here's my suggestion to you.

  430. If we understand the whole of chapter 10,

  431. we'll have a better idea of how we should meet.

  432. And so I'm just going to do a quick,

  433. very quick, even though we didn't read it,

  434. I'm going to do a very quick summary

  435. of verses 1 to 18 of Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  436. because this will give us the primary reason

  437. and the context and the impetus

  438. on the motivation on why we should meet.

  439. Okay?

  440. So verse 1, it says this,

  441. the prime reason and context,

  442. it says,

  443. Okay, so here's the thing.

  444. Before Jesus came,

  445. we couldn't approach God by ourselves.

  446. For the longest time,

  447. the Israelites had this mosaic law,

  448. which is, hey, you need to do all these things

  449. and you need to follow all these things,

  450. but the problem is you will always keep failing,

  451. which is why we need sacrifices,

  452. because you guys have chosen the way of sin.

  453. And the only way for you to enter

  454. into the presence of God,

  455. sadly, actually, let me stop there.

  456. Only one of you can enter the presence of God.

  457. Okay?

  458. And that's the high priest.

  459. And oh, by the way,

  460. he can't enter any time, any day either.

  461. He can only enter one day a year,

  462. the day of atonement, Yom Kippur.

  463. That's the only time he can enter.

  464. And he has to do a whole ton of things

  465. and a whole ton of rituals

  466. and animals have to be sacrificed.

  467. But the problem here is this,

  468. the animals being sacrificed,

  469. their blood almost offers

  470. like a temporary covering of our sin,

  471. but it's only temporary,

  472. is what it's saying.

  473. So before Jesus, that is what we had.

  474. Those sacrifices that were in the law

  475. basically prescribed the sacrifice of Christ.

  476. All this time,

  477. these animals that were being sacrificed

  478. would simply just be a temporary,

  479. imperfect way to cover our sin.

  480. And so how do we know that?

  481. Because every year,

  482. you would have to make and do the same thing.

  483. Okay?

  484. It's like the health checks that we have

  485. or the things that we have to do with our bodies

  486. or even just our homes or our cars

  487. or whatever it is,

  488. we need to do constant checks,

  489. constant maintenance

  490. because it isn't once and for all.

  491. Okay?

  492. So that's what it's saying here.

  493. We have to do this every year.

  494. And verse three, it says this,

  495. but in these sacrifices,

  496. there is a reminder of sins every year.

  497. So every time you gather,

  498. you realize that you still have guilt.

  499. People are reminded of their sin.

  500. And in some ways, that's what we do here.

  501. Because if you operate in isolation,

  502. it's very easy to become your own God.

  503. You will justify everything that you do.

  504. No one will pick you up on anything

  505. and you will just become your own God.

  506. Basically, you are the center of your own universe.

  507. When you choose to gather,

  508. even in the olden days,

  509. it would be, hey, man, I fall short.

  510. Man, I am filled with sin.

  511. And that's what it's saying here.

  512. And verse four says,

  513. the animal sacrifices offered away,

  514. but it is impossible to completely cover our sin

  515. for it is impossible for the blood of the bulls and goats

  516. to take away sins.

  517. And I'll add permanently there.

  518. And then he moves in and he quotes Psalm 40 there

  519. in verses five to seven,

  520. which is basically saying,

  521. actually sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,

  522. but a body you have prepared for me

  523. in burnt offerings and sin offerings,

  524. you have taken no pleasure.

  525. What he's saying here is,

  526. for too long,

  527. you guys have basically been focused

  528. on empty compliance and not true obedience.

  529. You think being a Christian

  530. is simply complying to God's laws

  531. and just ticking off the box

  532. and being a decent person and that's enough.

  533. And Jesus comes and says,

  534. that was,

  535. did you realize that those rules were there?

  536. And rules are good.

  537. Rules are good to help us

  538. become the people that we want to be.

  539. But sometimes on the outside,

  540. we're like, oh, Christianity,

  541. so many rules,

  542. so many things that I can't do.

  543. But as you start to grow and mature,

  544. just not even in your faith,

  545. just in life,

  546. you're like,

  547. actually,

  548. rules are actually good things

  549. to keep us.

  550. I mean,

  551. anyone who's visited Vietnam

  552. and tried to cross a road,

  553. you'll be like,

  554. oh, actually,

  555. rules are good.

  556. When there's a traffic light

  557. and it has red on,

  558. it's good for you to stop,

  559. but then you'll get to go soon.

  560. But when we don't follow the rules,

  561. that's when chaos happens.

  562. But Jesus is saying,

  563. hey,

  564. you're focusing so much on the rules,

  565. but it's empty compliance.

  566. What I actually want,

  567. what I desire,

  568. is true obedience.

  569. Every parent has been there

  570. where you ask your children

  571. to do something

  572. and they don't want to do it.

  573. And then you force them to do it

  574. and they do do it,

  575. but no one is happy.

  576. But when you see a willingness

  577. that comes out,

  578. a trust that comes out

  579. from the child,

  580. okay,

  581. I do know that this is good,

  582. dad.

  583. I do understand

  584. why we cannot have McDonald's

  585. every day.

  586. Oh,

  587. it's for my good.

  588. It's for my health.

  589. And then you start to understand

  590. and that's what Jesus

  591. is really going for here.

  592. Verse nine,

  593. it says this,

  594. then he added,

  595. behold,

  596. I have come to do your will.

  597. He does that way

  598. with the first

  599. in order to establish

  600. the second.

  601. And Jesus says,

  602. hey,

  603. I've come

  604. not to abolish the law,

  605. but I'm telling you

  606. that actually I've fulfilled

  607. it because actually

  608. you could never do it.

  609. All those laws,

  610. all those ways to get to God,

  611. you failed every year

  612. and that's why we needed

  613. all these sacrifices every year.

  614. But now I've come

  615. and I'm going to do away

  616. with the first

  617. and there's going to be

  618. a new way to access God.

  619. And it won't be through

  620. your own work.

  621. It won't be through

  622. you being a good person.

  623. It will be through

  624. the only good person

  625. and that person

  626. is me.

  627. And then he carries on

  628. and he contrasts

  629. himself

  630. with the priests of the day

  631. or even with someone like me.

  632. And he says,

  633. and every priest

  634. stands daily at his service,

  635. offering repeatedly

  636. the same sacrifices

  637. which can never take away sins.

  638. But when Christ had offered

  639. for all time

  640. a single sacrifice for sins,

  641. he sat down

  642. at the right hand of God,

  643. waiting from that time

  644. until his enemies

  645. should be made a footstool

  646. for his feet.

  647. So what he's saying here

  648. is this,

  649. the priests that are

  650. looking after you,

  651. they're just toiling away

  652. every single year,

  653. standing,

  654. helping you

  655. to help basically

  656. provide sacrifices

  657. to cover your sins

  658. and then next year

  659. you're going to come back

  660. and do the same.

  661. And as a pastor,

  662. I completely relate.

  663. I walk with people,

  664. I help them,

  665. I encourage them,

  666. lift them out of a place

  667. and I know that

  668. at some point

  669. next year

  670. or maybe even next month

  671. they will fall back

  672. into the same place

  673. and here we go again.

  674. And I'm not just saying

  675. that about you,

  676. I'm saying that about me.

  677. Isn't that just human nature?

  678. Isn't that why

  679. we have New Year's resolutions

  680. every year?

  681. Why else would we need

  682. New Year's resolutions

  683. every year

  684. were it not for the fact

  685. that we keep breaking them

  686. by January 5th

  687. and then we start again.

  688. But what Jesus is saying here

  689. is hey,

  690. you've got priests

  691. who are standing,

  692. working all the time

  693. but guess what I'm doing?

  694. I did it once

  695. and now I'm sat down.

  696. It's done.

  697. Just mull over that

  698. for a second

  699. what he's saying here.

  700. He's giving a mic drop.

  701. He's saying

  702. the people who are

  703. caring for you

  704. having to do this constantly

  705. but I've done it once

  706. and that's enough

  707. and now I'm just chilling.

  708. Sitting at the right hand

  709. of God

  710. and waiting.

  711. Can you imagine

  712. the power,

  713. the assurance

  714. of what that actually means

  715. for those people

  716. who are like

  717. every year we have to do

  718. the same thing

  719. but you're telling me

  720. that right now

  721. someone's already done it once

  722. and that's it?

  723. That's what he's saying.

  724. So verse 14

  725. is the single offering

  726. that he's given

  727. for by a single offering

  728. he has perfected

  729. for all time

  730. those who are being sanctified.

  731. He's saying

  732. I have done it.

  733. I have dropped the mic

  734. and that is it

  735. and we go there

  736. and that's where

  737. or verse 18

  738. for where there is

  739. forgiveness of these

  740. there is no longer

  741. any offering for sin.

  742. So he's saying

  743. hey guys

  744. you all

  745. bar none

  746. as long as you believe

  747. as long as you repent

  748. you can have access

  749. to God

  750. through me.

  751. That's it.

  752. Therefore.

  753. Therefore.

  754. And that's why

  755. that therefore

  756. is there.

  757. Because what he's saying

  758. is actually

  759. if there's going to be

  760. a community

  761. that gathers together

  762. first must understand

  763. the work of Jesus.

  764. That's how it works.

  765. How many of times

  766. have we been in a group

  767. and names are popping

  768. into your head

  769. faces are popping

  770. into your mind

  771. right now

  772. people who you're like

  773. actually I don't know

  774. if they truly get

  775. the fact that Jesus

  776. loves them

  777. and died for them

  778. and has risen again.

  779. They haven't truly

  780. understood and grasped

  781. the gospel.

  782. And then we start seeing

  783. some of these problems

  784. that are occurring.

  785. Pride.

  786. Ego.

  787. The things of the flesh.

  788. And you're like

  789. oh I think I see.

  790. This the starter pack

  791. the base requirement

  792. for any group

  793. is a true understanding

  794. of what the gospel is.

  795. A true understanding

  796. of what Jesus did.

  797. If you get that

  798. that will pave the way

  799. to the community

  800. that we're trying

  801. to go for.

  802. Therefore

  803. so remember

  804. it is all about

  805. because if you don't

  806. remember that

  807. if you're going

  808. to a group right now

  809. and you're resting

  810. on the fact

  811. that it's your work

  812. and not his

  813. that's where the problem comes.

  814. So even for the leaders

  815. if you're walking

  816. into your group

  817. going oh that group

  818. just won't change

  819. there's nothing

  820. that I can do

  821. that can help

  822. that group change

  823. well then

  824. we've got it wrong

  825. because that means

  826. you've forgotten

  827. the first part

  828. of chapter 10.

  829. You think that

  830. it's your work

  831. you think you're

  832. the priest

  833. that has to stand

  834. daily,

  835. weekly,

  836. yearly

  837. to help these people

  838. get close to him

  839. but no

  840. there's only one

  841. and that person

  842. is sat down now

  843. because he's done it

  844. and it's his Holy Spirit

  845. that works

  846. so that should free you

  847. so when you are

  848. going from work

  849. to your life group

  850. you're like okay

  851. it might be frustrating

  852. it might be hard

  853. but the saving grace

  854. of Jesus

  855. has already covered

  856. whatever I'm going to do there.

  857. He's sat down

  858. I just need to go

  859. and sit down next to him

  860. and watch him work

  861. that's how it changes you

  862. and if you're walking

  863. into a place

  864. and go okay

  865. can I be in this community

  866. that will help me

  867. become more like Jesus

  868. maybe the people around me

  869. and I just said

  870. we need people around me

  871. but it's not just

  872. the people that are going

  873. to do it

  874. it's Christ working

  875. through the people

  876. and so if you sit down

  877. and go hey

  878. I want to join this group

  879. and this group's going

  880. to change me

  881. and help me feel better

  882. and become a better Christian

  883. well then you're wrong again

  884. because that group

  885. cannot do it

  886. but Jesus can do it

  887. through that group

  888. so you walk into that group

  889. with a different mindset

  890. and go okay

  891. I'm here

  892. to become more like Jesus

  893. through my interactions

  894. with you

  895. and he's going to help me

  896. can you see

  897. it just changes

  898. the way you even approach

  899. what that group looks like

  900. on a Thursday evening

  901. when you understand

  902. Christ's sacrifice

  903. is once and for all

  904. and so we're finally now

  905. in the therefore

  906. and he gives

  907. basically two

  908. since we's

  909. two since we's

  910. and then three

  911. three

  912. let us

  913. okay

  914. so that's where

  915. we're going to go through

  916. so he says

  917. therefore brothers

  918. since we have confidence

  919. to enter the holy places

  920. by the blood of Jesus

  921. what he's saying

  922. he's just talked about

  923. the mosaic law

  924. he said hey

  925. you know that

  926. for the longest time

  927. it's been one person

  928. one day a year

  929. and only that person

  930. can go in

  931. and if that person

  932. hasn't done their job properly

  933. they actually will die

  934. and you have to drag

  935. their body out

  936. okay

  937. that's how terrifying

  938. the presence of God was

  939. and he's saying

  940. that's done now

  941. therefore

  942. since we have confidence

  943. brothers

  944. that we know

  945. that Jesus has done everything

  946. and he's now just sat down

  947. chilling

  948. and everything is assured

  949. we

  950. we

  951. can then access

  952. into that holy place

  953. ourselves

  954. that curtain

  955. is torn

  956. we can actually walk in

  957. ourselves

  958. rather the person

  959. who was behind that curtain

  960. is now walking towards us

  961. that's what the therefore

  962. is there for

  963. that's what the since we

  964. is there for

  965. verse 20

  966. by the new and living way

  967. that he opened for us

  968. through the curtain

  969. that is

  970. through

  971. his flesh

  972. and also

  973. since we

  974. have a great priest

  975. over the house of God

  976. a pastor that is way better

  977. than any pastor

  978. that you'll ever encounter

  979. this pastor who sympathizes

  980. with every single weakness

  981. and has been tempted

  982. in every single way

  983. and yet was without sin

  984. he's the person

  985. who did it all

  986. who paid all the debt

  987. I can't pay for your debt

  988. I'm afraid

  989. ladies and gentlemen

  990. because I have debt myself

  991. okay

  992. I am not the one

  993. that can do it for you

  994. I am not the one

  995. that's going to help you

  996. become more like Jesus

  997. only Jesus will help you

  998. become more like him

  999. only Jesus will help you

1000. get access to the father

  1001. and he's saying

  1002. since we

1003. have access to this place now

  1004. and actually you have

1005. a great priest over you

  1006. therefore

1007. therefore we can move on

1008. to what it actually looks like

  1009. in a new community

1010. so this is where we jump into

  1011. the three

  1012. let us's

  1013. and remember

  1014. it's let us

1015. it tells us one thing

  1016. that access to God

  1017. is personal

  1018. but the command

  1019. is plural

  1020. okay

  1021. we can access God

  1022. individually

  1023. each

  1024. of us

  1025. go to God

  1026. ourselves

  1027. but then it says

  1028. let us

  1029. the command is plural

1030. we must do this together

1031. and what does it say

  1032. the first one

  1033. let us draw near

  1034. with a true heart

  1035. actually other versions

1036. will say let us draw near

  1037. to God

1038. this is the first thing

  1039. when you gather him

1040. this is why it's our

  1041. first mission statement

  1042. that we would

  1043. we're a simple gathering

  1044. in a complex time

1045. and we are getting close

  1046. to Jesus

  1047. walking in the ways

  1048. of Jesus

1049. that we would know him

  1050. and enjoy him forever

  1051. that's the Westminster

  1052. catechism

1053. that we would know him

  1054. and enjoy him

  1055. and glorify him forever

  1056. draw near to God

  1057. how many of you

  1058. are here

  1059. for God

  1060. thank you for putting

  1061. your hand up

  1062. let's go Chris

  1063. let's go

  1064. through that door

  1065. there we go

  1066. off you go

  1067. so here's the problem

  1068. I'm not saying

  1069. that you

  1070. I mean

  1071. you're just Chinese

1072. so you don't want to

  1073. raise your hands

  1074. and get picked on

1075. but if we ask ourselves

1076. why do we come to church

  1077. sometimes

  1078. it's for a girl

  1079. whoa whoa whoa

  1080. sometimes

  1081. it's for friends

  1082. sometimes

  1083. it's because

  1084. you've signed up

1085. to play in the football

  1086. team later

  1087. and you don't want

  1088. to be asked

1089. why you weren't at church

1090. so you're at church today

  1091. hey John C

  1092. we come to church

  1093. for different reasons

  1094. is what I'm saying

  1095. and I've said this

  1096. we are literally

  1097. the most convenient

  1098. building in the whole

  1099. of Hong Kong

  1100. we're above the most

  1101. busy McDonald's

  1102. in the whole world

1103. this is a good place

  1104. to come

  1105. but it says

  1106. let us draw near

  1107. to God

  1108. here's the problem

1109. when you come to church

  1110. for any other reason

  1111. other than God

  1112. you will be

  1113. you will be underwhelmed

  1114. you will be frustrated

  1115. you will be disappointed

  1116. absolutely

  1117. if it's not today

1118. then it will be next week

1119. if it's not next week

1120. it will be next year

1121. can we be in a place

1122. where we as a community

1123. we can look at each other

  1124. and go hey

  1125. you're actually never

  1126. going to satisfy me

  1127. you're actually never

1128. going to be the person

1129. that I need you to be

  1130. but that's okay

  1131. because God's going

  1132. to work through that

  1133. to help me become

  1134. more like him

  1135. through your imperfections

  1136. and likewise

  1137. mine to yours

  1138. in fact that's what

  1139. that's what every

  1140. married couple

1141. needs to say to each other

1142. Emily needs to say to Jay

  1143. Jay

  1144. you will never

  1145. satisfy me completely

  1146. in every way

  1147. she has no problems

  1148. nodding to that

1149. in fact she's been saying

  1150. that since the beginning

  1151. of their relationship

  1152. Jay needs to kindly

  1153. and lovingly

  1154. gently say

  1155. something similar

  1156. without getting into trouble

  1157. it never works

  1158. but every married couple

  1159. needs to say that

  1160. every dating couple

  1161. needs to say that

  1162. every friendship

  1163. needs to go like

  1164. hey you can't be

  1165. my everything

1166. you can't be my all

  1167. I'm coming to church

  1168. because I'm here

  1169. to draw near

  1170. to one personality

  1171. and that person

  1172. is God

  1173. the access is personal

1174. but the command is plural

  1175. and that's why

  1176. when the disciples

  1177. they're looking at Jesus

  1178. praying and he's like

  1179. well he prays different

1180. he can pray for hours

1181. in the middle of the night

  1182. and not fall asleep

1183. and so they go to him

  1184. and go hey Jesus

  1185. can you teach us

1186. how to pray like you

1187. and he says okay fine

1188. let me show you the template

1189. let me show you the blueprint

1190. and how does he start

1191. what are the first two words

  1192. our father

  1193. what he's saying here

1194. is that it can't be

  1195. my father

1196. it can't be you do it

  1197. on your own

1198. it has to be together

  1199. with other people

  1200. I'll tell you

  1201. my prayer life

  1202. my prayer life

  1203. has improved drastically

  1204. since September

  1205. why

  1206. because there was

  1207. a group of people

1208. who committed to the fellowship

  1209. with us

  1210. where we pray together

  1211. every single day

  1212. weekday

  1213. just from September

1214. all the way to June

1215. is what we're going to do

  1216. and there's a group

1217. that wakes up at 7.30

  1218. in the morning

1219. we jump on a call

  1220. and we pray

  1221. and if we're lucky

1222. Wes will even put his clothes on

  1223. if we're not lucky

  1224. it's terrible

  1225. and then we spend

1226. the rest of the day

  1227. recovering

  1228. from what we saw

  1229. there's a 7.30 group

  1230. there's an 8.30 group

  1231. and then there's

  1232. a 10pm group

  1233. and I've been praying

  1234. three times a day

  1235. with these people

1236. and I have loved it

  1237. because I'll be honest

  1238. if I didn't have those people

  1239. I won't be praying

  1240. in those spots

  1241. but we need people

  1242. around us

1243. to be able to pray

  1244. we need people

  1245. around us

  1246. to put the structures

  1247. in place for us

  1248. that form us

  1249. that's what we need

1250. we need to do it together

1251. and so what do you need

  1252. let us draw near

1253. what with a true heart

  1254. pure motives

1255. this is the second thing

1256. and I keep talking about

1257. this syncretism that we have

1258. is that we go to God

  1259. why?

  1260. we go to God

  1261. because we want blessings

  1262. we want health

1263. we want the job that we want

  1264. we want the lifestyle

  1265. that we want

1266. but when we come to God

  1267. with a true heart

  1268. we're just saying

1269. none of the other things

  1270. in this performance culture

  1271. in this culture

  1272. that is filled with

  1273. imposters

  1274. and hypocrisy

1275. God I'm coming to you

  1276. only for you

1277. I'm not even just coming to you

1278. so I can have peace

1279. I'm not coming to you

1280. so I can feel fulfilled

  1281. and be happy

  1282. I'm coming to you

  1283. because I want you

  1284. that's the difference

1285. coming with a true heart

  1286. just like a child

1287. when they see the parent

  1288. running towards them

  1289. all they want

  1290. is nothing else

  1291. but just the parent

1292. do we have that kind of true heart

  1293. as we draw near

  1294. to God together?

  1295. Keller says this

1296. we do not come to the holy place

1297. because we are strong and good

1298. we come because we are weak

  1299. and needy

1300. and we come not alone

1301. but with our brothers and sisters

  1302. holding one another's hands

  1303. speaking words of encouragement

  1304. helping each other

1305. up to the steep path

1306. to the throne of grace

1307. so we need a few things here

1308. actually it says in this passage

1309. first thing that we need

1310. is when we draw near to God

1311. one we need a true heart

  1312. which is honesty

  1313. and sincerity

1314. God I only want you

  1315. even if that means

  1316. I don't get what I want

  1317. I only want you

  1318. that's the true heart

  1319. he's talking about

1320. second is the full assurance of faith

  1321. who has doubts here

  1322. in their faith?

1323. you can put your hand up

  1324. I won't pick on you here

  1325. who has doubts?

1326. I'm putting my hand up

  1327. because I have doubts

1328. what he's saying here is

  1329. when you get together

  1330. that is basically

  1331. the antidote to doubts

1332. the full assurance of faith

  1333. that you have

1334. that you cannot have on your own

  1335. you can have

1336. when you're with other people

1337. when you bring your doubts

  1338. together to the people

1339. and there are people in the body

1340. who are much smarter than we are

  1341. who can help answer

1342. the questions that we have

  1343. who actually sometimes

  1344. we know

1345. some things to be true

  1346. we're just so struggling

1347. with our own internal turmoil

1348. that we actually just need someone

  1349. who knows us

  1350. and loves us

  1351. and cares for us

1352. just to speak into that

  1353. and say hey

1354. you know what God is

1355. you know what God has done

1356. the sacrifice that he's paid

1357. you know you don't have to be worried

1358. you know you can choose faith

  1359. over fear

1360. hasn't he been with you all along?

  1361. why do you think

1362. that he's actually going to fail you now?

1363. we need those people around us

1364. to give us that confidence

  1365. in him

  1366. and again

  1367. it's not confidence

1368. that full assurance of faith

  1369. is not something

1370. that you can muster up yourself

  1371. you need

1372. him to give it to you

  1373. it's his Holy Spirit

  1374. giving it to you

1375. and it's the people around you

1376. that remind you of it

  1377. so true heart

  1378. that's the sincerity

1379. and then it's the full assurance

  1380. which is the certainty

1381. and the humility to go

  1382. hey it's not me

  1383. the reason I'm confident

1384. is not because I think

  1385. I can pull through

1386. do you know when we say this

  1387. when we have exams

1388. that we're trying to pray for each other

1389. we say you got this

1390. can we be a people that say

1391. hey you don't got this

  1392. but God's got you

  1393. that's the difference

  1394. because when we say

  1395. you got this

  1396. then actually

1397. we're putting it back to ourselves

1398. we're back to that priest

  1399. that's standing

  1400. year on year out

1401. doing the thing that we're doing

  1402. but if we say

1403. no you've not got this

  1404. but God's got you

1405. and he's sat down now

  1406. which means it's done

1407. doesn't that fill you with faith

1408. don't you need people around you

1409. to remind you of that

  1410. and then it says

  1411. heart sprinkled

  1412. and body's washed

  1413. what he's saying here

  1414. there is a baptism

  1415. on the outside

  1416. and on the inside

  1417. that means your inside

  1418. is now clean

  1419. we know we all

1420. the heart above all things

  1421. is deceitful

  1422. we make choices

1423. that even we don't want

  1424. even Paul says that

  1425. in Romans 7

  1426. he says

  1427. there's things that

  1428. I want to do

  1429. that I know I shouldn't do

  1430. and there's things I shouldn't do

  1431. that I don't want to do

1432. I have that internal battle in me

1433. that's what Paul is saying

  1434. so find comfort

1435. if you have that internal wrestling

  1436. so did Paul

  1437. so do I

1438. but what we see here

1439. is when we come together

1440. then our hearts are sprinkled clean

  1441. with an evil conscience

1442. and our bodies are now washed

  1443. internally and externally

  1444. both in the heart

1445. and both in our behavior

  1446. our lives will change

  1447. and we get together

1448. with those things in mind

1449. there is a new covenant

1450. not the one with laws

1451. but the one where a savior

1452. a priest is now sat

  1453. saying just welcome

  1454. just come in

  1455. and come in together

  1456. that's the first one

1457. let us draw near to God

  1458. the second is

1459. let us hold fast the confession

1460. again that's really the same thing

  1461. without wavering

1462. so often we waver on our own

1463. but when we have people around us

  1464. we're like hey

1465. you know what you believe here

1466. it's okay to have those doubts

1467. but let's have those doubts together

1468. let's not go off the rails here

  1469. we need each other

1470. we all have these daily temptations

  1471. that we have

1472. daily thoughts that we have

  1473. what's the biggest thought

1474. work is the most important thing

  1475. if I don't have this job

1476. I won't put food on the table

1477. and I won't be able to provide for myself

1478. isn't that one of the daily temptations

  1479. that we have

  1480. if I don't do this

  1481. I won't get this

1482. and we need people around us

1483. just to keep us going

  1484. hold formation together

1485. if you have a belief

1486. then you need to hold formation together

  1487. to go through

1488. one of my strongest beliefs

1489. is that when you go to a theme park

1490. and you walk through the gift shop

  1491. at the end

1492. that gift shop is not to buy things

  1493. as a Chinese dad

  1494. I firmly believe

1495. we do not buy anything

  1496. in those gift shops

1497. so I tell my family

  1498. hold formation

1499. let's walk through this valley

1500. of the shadow of death together

  1501. hold hands

  1502. Ruben grab your mother

  1503. oh she's off

  1504. she's gone

  1505. and Christina's parents here

  1506. so they'll know this

1507. every time she walks through a shop

  1508. she's gone

  1509. like five steps

1510. and you don't know where she is

1511. so I tell my kids

1512. hold on to your mother

1513. hold on to your sister

1514. we can only get through

  1515. this gift shop together

  1516. and so we do

  1517. so my kids believe

  1518. those shops are museums

  1519. they're not shops

  1520. they're museums

1521. we just go in and look

  1522. don't touch

  1523. and then we leave

1524. if you have a conviction

1525. you need to stick together

  1526. is what I'm saying

  1527. communal affirmation

1528. is what makes us strong

1529. why do we gather together

1530. we profess faith to each other

1531. we sing songs to each other

  1532. why is that song

  1533. the blessing

  1534. such a powerful song

  1535. especially during COVID times

1536. is because we were in isolation

1537. we were on our own

1538. and we finally got a place

  1539. got a song

1540. where we could look at someone else

  1541. and go

1542. Jackie the Lord bless you

  1543. and keep you

1544. may his face shine upon you

  1545. do you remember those

  1546. probably all of us

1547. at some point in the church context

1548. have been in this context

1549. where we sang that song

  1550. to each other

1551. and we were in tears

  1552. right

1553. because we were just moved

  1554. by the spirit going

  1555. I love that person

1556. I'm just blessing that person

  1557. there was power

  1558. in the interaction

  1559. between people

  1560. there's a reason

  1561. why that song

  1562. became the anthem

  1563. of the Christian world

  1564. during COVID

  1565. because in the midst

  1566. of isolation

  1567. you had a song

  1568. where Christians

1569. could look at one another

  1570. and bless each other

  1571. with words that came

1572. straight from the heart of God

  1573. can you see

  1574. how much we need

  1575. people

  1576. we echo God's faithfulness

  1577. to each other

  1578. it's our collective voices

  1579. that anchor our hearts

  1580. in God

1581. that's why we meet together

  1582. that's why we spend

  1583. that time together

1584. when we are in isolation

1585. we start believing the lies

1586. when we are in isolation

  1587. we know this

1588. if you haven't been to a church

  1589. for a few weeks

  1590. and a few months

1591. you know that you've drifted

  1592. into a different place

  1593. right

  1594. we need people

  1595. around us

1596. to be able to do it

  1597. the church is also

  1598. acting like a gymnasium

  1599. for the soul

1600. I personally do not go

  1601. to the gym anymore

1602. contrary to how I look

  1603. but I have

  1604. I have trusted sources

  1605. Gavs why are you

1606. looking at me like that

  1607. just the pride

  1608. I see in you

  1609. just looking

  1610. and Chris you too

  1611. I've been told

1612. that people who go to the gym

1613. they do like to go together

  1614. and why

1615. because you need each other

  1616. because you need

  1617. that motivation

  1618. it's a little bit easier

  1619. in Hong Kong

  1620. because it's warm

  1621. but in England

  1622. when it's just

  1623. cold dark day

  1624. in November

  1625. in Stoke

1626. and all you want to do

  1627. is just cuddle up

1628. and just stay at home

  1629. you need people

1630. to get you out of bed

  1631. you need people

  1632. to take you

  1633. there with you

1634. that's why we have church

  1635. it's a gymnasium

  1636. for the soul

  1637. finally

  1638. third let us

  1639. let us

  1640. here we go

  1641. consider

  1642. how to stir up

  1643. one another

  1644. to love

  1645. and good works

  1646. do you know what

  1647. that word means

  1648. consider

  1649. it means

  1650. I look at

  1651. Micah and go

  1652. okay

  1653. and I do this

1654. how can I help him

  1655. grow

  1656. what does he need

  1657. what do him

  1658. and Cindy need

1659. what do his kids need

  1660. I'm going

  1661. what is it that

  1662. actually they need

1663. to be able to grow

  1664. that's what it's saying here

  1665. would you consider

  1666. how to stir up

  1667. one another

  1668. in love

  1669. and good works

  1670. I look at Ken

  1671. Wes and Francis

  1672. this morning

  1673. at breakfast

  1674. I'm looking at them

  1675. I'm like how much

  1676. love I have

  1677. for these three men

  1678. I'm going

1679. what's it going to take

1680. to help them to grow

  1681. look at the person

  1682. next to you

  1683. or just look across

  1684. the room

  1685. and look at

  1686. just engage

  1687. in awkward eye contact

  1688. with someone

  1689. and go

1690. when was the last time

  1691. I looked at you

  1692. and said

  1693. oh

1694. how can I help you grow

  1695. that's what it's saying here

  1696. consider

  1697. that means calculate

  1698. think about

  1699. how can I

  1700. honestly

  1701. the fellowship

  1702. that we're running

1703. I think my first inspiration

  1704. was looking at Nathan

  1705. and going

  1706. man

  1707. this guy needs help

  1708. and then going

  1709. what can I do

  1710. to help him

1711. how can I love him

1712. how can I pour into him

  1713. so he has enough

  1714. to pour out

  1715. I'm only joking

  1716. I do love you

  1717. and I think

  1718. the world of you

  1719. but I'm like

  1720. how do I

1721. what do I need to do

  1722. and what's it going

  1723. to cost me

1724. oh it's going to cost me

  1725. three calls a day

  1726. and reading the bible

  1727. together every day

1728. with a group of people

1729. and trying to call them higher

1730. and hold them to that spot

  1731. okay sure

  1732. I'm down

  1733. I'm in

  1734. why

  1735. because I love him

1736. and I'm going to consider

1737. how to stir him up

  1738. in love

  1739. and good works

  1740. that's the thing

  1741. that's what we're trying to do

  1742. that's stir up

1743. do you know what that means

  1744. it means provoke

  1745. how do I

1746. how do I get under your skin

1747. and actually get you to the point

1748. you know what it's actually saying here

1749. we live in a place

1750. where there are filled with people

  1751. who basically are apathetic

  1752. or fearful

1753. and how do I get under your skin

  1754. and stir you up

1755. and provoke you to the point

1756. where you can have this passion

  1757. for God

1758. and that's what the church does

  1759. when you get

  1760. the stones together

1761. the living rocks that we are

  1762. that Peter calls us

  1763. when you

1764. when we rub against each other

1765. and cause the fire to come out

  1766. that's what we're trying to do

  1767. let us consider

1768. how to stir up one another

1769. in love and good works

1770. that means in order for us

  1771. to have spiritual vigor

1772. and to be on fire

1773. we need those around us

1774. I need to look at Matthew

  1775. and go okay

1776. you're in my group Matthew

1777. how can I help you

  1778. stir you up

  1779. so you will love

  1780. Ja more

1781. and love the people that work more

1782. and then to stir you up

1783. to do good works more

  1784. that is my job

1785. but it's not just my job

  1786. it's actually Emily's job

  1787. for her group

  1788. for the people

1789. that she's got around her

1790. it's every single one of us going

1791. how can I help each other

1792. and that's why the life groups are there

  1793. okay

1794. okay we've spent enough time now

1795. we've talked about the things

  1796. that you're going through

  1797. how can we help

  1798. encourage one another

  1799. and challenge one another

1800. when was the last time we did that

1801. the primary engine for growth

  1802. is communal provocation

1803. where we provoke one another

  1804. stir up one another

1805. in love and good works

1806. and it's going to cost us

  1807. and a group

  1808. I know a group

1809. went with Sam's group yesterday

  1810. to St. Barnabas

  1811. and what is that

  1812. that is just saying

1813. hey we're not going to be able

1814. to do this on our own

1815. but if there's a group of people going

  1816. I'll go too

1817. that's what it really looks like

1818. how do we do that

  1819. Martin Lloyd-Jones says this

1820. Christians are like the stones

  1821. of a temple

1822. each one touches the other

  1823. resting upon it

1824. and are helping to hold

  1825. the building together

1826. we are meant to provoke

  1827. to irritate

  1828. to stimulate one another

  1829. into love

  1830. and a solitary Christian

1831. is a contradiction in terms

  1832. a solitary Christian

  1833. is a contradiction

  1834. in terms

  1835. you can

  1836. last week I said

1837. you can show up at church

  1838. for a whole year

1839. and no one needs to know

  1840. who you are

  1841. because Chinese people

  1842. look the same

  1843. so you can literally

  1844. just blend in

  1845. leave

  1846. and that'll be it

1847. and no one will notice you

1848. and you can be gone

  1849. for a whole year

1850. and no one will remember you

  1851. correct

  1852. that is very possible

1853. we know we can do that

  1854. there's another danger

1855. is where you do attend

1856. and you do spend time

  1857. with people

1858. and you do hang out

  1859. with people

  1860. and you find people

1861. who are just as cool as you

1862. who play Magic the Gathering

  1863. just like you do

1864. and then you spend time together

1865. but you still don't consider

1866. how to stir each other up

1867. in love and good works

1868. when you come to church

  1869. you should be going

1870. if you're on fire for Jesus

  1871. you're like

1872. who can I provoke today

1873. who can I poke today

1874. so that they will be stirred up

1875. in love and good works

1876. who can I do that to today

1877. out of love for myself

  1878. who can I grab

1879. to do things with me today

  1880. that's the mindset

  1881. we should be having

1882. that's what we should be

  1883. doing here

  1884. and it says

  1885. something interesting here

1886. which is the final verse

1887. not neglecting to meet together

1888. as is the habit of some

1889. why did they stop meeting

  1890. there were some people

1891. who were filled with the Holy Spirit

1892. maybe even met the apostles

  1893. and Jesus himself

1894. but why did they stop meeting

  1895. well I don't know

1896. maybe their lives got busy

1897. maybe they suddenly had to

1898. engage in some kind of study

1899. or maybe it's for work reasons

  1900. maybe it's just

1901. they started to lose interest

1902. maybe it's for all the same reasons

1903. why we stopped going to church

  1904. and we stopped gathering

  1905. and we stopped considering

1906. how to stir each other

  1907. up in love

  1908. and good works

  1909. there's a quote that says

  1910. beware of the barrenness

  1911. of a busy life

  1912. beware of the barrenness

  1913. of a busy life

  1914. we in Hong Kong

1915. are guilty of being busy

1916. but we are at risk

1917. of just living barren lives

  1918. where we are busy

  1919. for no reason

  1920. at all

1921. and maybe that's the reason

  1922. why they start meeting

  1923. can you turn

  1924. this community

1925. to be your big rock

  1926. we know

1927. we all have big rocks

  1928. in our lives

  1929. whether you're like

  1930. yeah

  1931. this happens even

  1932. with the most well-intentioned

  1933. of us

1934. what do you care about

  1935. the most

  1936. family and friends

  1937. and God

  1938. what do you spend

1939. most of your time on

  1940. work and

  1941. individual pleasures

  1942. and pursuits

  1943. it's

  1944. all of us

  1945. but if

  1946. this is truly

  1947. is a big rock

1948. then how do I plan

1949. my whole life around it

1950. how do I tell my boss

1951. hey I'm going to work

  1952. so hard for you

1953. for the rest of the week

1954. but on my Thursday evenings

  1955. are untouchable

  1956. I'm really sorry

  1957. hey I

  1958. I love my job

  1959. and I will

  1960. do so much

1961. for the good of the company

1962. but it can't touch this

1963. do we have the courage

1964. to say those kinds of things

1965. to the people around us

  1966. I think that's what it means

  1967. when he says

1968. don't conform to the patterns

  1969. of this world

  1970. but be transformed

1971. by the renewing of your mind

1972. so you don't have fear

  1973. so you are actually

  1974. loving in the way

  1975. you share

1976. why you have the hope

  1977. that you have

  1978. and why you live

1979. the way that you do

  1980. why

  1981. because the high priest

  1982. is now sat down

1983. and he has done it

1984. and there is an urgency

  1985. and all the more

1986. as you see the day

  1987. drawing near

  1988. in this society

  1989. where we are just

  1990. surrounded by cultural decay

  1991. where we're just surrounded

  1992. by brokenness

  1993. and despair

  1994. where people are looking

  1995. at the church

  1996. and going

  1997. well what about you

  1998. what are you doing

  1999. okay you're a gymnasium

  2000. for the soul

  2001. but you're all just

  2002. gym junkies

  2003. in the gym yourselves

  2004. you're not helping us

  2005. in any way

  2006. you're not coming out

  2007. to love us

  2008. and show us

  2009. how to live

  2010. that early church

  2011. in Acts 2

  2012. they had favour

  2013. amongst all people

  2014. even those outside

  2015. would look and go

  2016. wow

  2017. not a Christian myself

  2018. but I love what

  2019. those Christians are doing

  2020. isn't that incredible

  2021. to have that

2022. what if we were not only

2023. a gymnasium for the soul

  2024. but we were also

  2025. an ark of hope

  2026. where we say

  2027. hey

  2028. this world isn't

  2029. in a good place

2030. but come on to the ark

  2031. experience hope

  2032. and perseverance

  2033. like

  2034. nothing you can experience

  2035. here in this world

2036. what if we were able

  2037. to invite people

  2038. who we know

  2039. are struggling

2040. with so many different things

  2041. just like we are

  2042. and go hey

2043. the church is not just

  2044. a museum of saints

  2045. but it's a hospital

  2046. for sinners

  2047. join us

  2048. anyone can join

2049. no saint without a past

2050. no sinner without a future

  2051. is a quote

  2052. I love

  2053. that you can come

2054. you will have met people

  2055. who say oh yeah

2056. the church thing is good

  2057. but I don't think it's for me

2058. you don't know the stuff

  2059. I've done well

  2060. that's perfect

  2061. you are perfectly

  2062. uniquely qualified

2063. just like the rest of us

  2064. to come to church

2065. because you are a sinner

  2066. with a past

2067. but you are also a saint

  2068. with a future

2069. can we be that kind of people

  2070. who gather these people

  2071. around

2072. we are not just a social club

  2073. we are an outpost

  2074. for an unshakable kingdom

  2075. where we point people

  2076. to this place

  2077. where there is someone

2078. who died for all of this

2079. you don't need to have

2080. the fear, guilt and shame anymore

2081. that debt has been paid

2082. and he comes and says

  2083. my burden is light

  2084. my yoke is easy

  2085. my way is better

  2086. imagine

  2087. imagine

2088. as we work out here

2089. in the gymnasium for the soul

2090. we will then end up

  2091. being this arc

2092. where we can push out

2093. and we can show hope

2094. to the rest of the world

  2095. can we reframe

  2096. our priorities

  2097. can this Sunday service

2098. be a pit stop for you

  2099. to be refilled

  2100. re-energized

  2101. Christina and I

  2102. finally got around

  2103. to watching the

  2104. Brad Pitt movie

  2105. F1

  2106. recently

  2107. I'm not an F1 fan

  2108. I just don't really find

  2109. interest in just

  2110. watching people

  2111. drive in circles

  2112. but

  2113. wow

  2114. that movie

  2115. just the adrenaline

  2116. and just watching them

  2117. work as a team

  2118. that every driver

  2119. every person

  2120. needs a space

  2121. where they come

  2122. they need to rely

  2123. on a whole team

  2124. to be their eyes

2125. and to be their brain

  2126. and then right down

  2127. to how they get

  2128. the wheels changed

  2129. can this Sunday service

  2130. morning slot

  2131. be a pit stop

  2132. for you

2133. not just the only pit stop

  2134. but maybe there's one

  2135. on a Thursday evening

  2136. or a Wednesday evening

  2137. or a Tuesday evening

  2138. honestly

  2139. it's not even just

  2140. about a weekly thing

  2141. I know Hong Kong

  2142. life is busy

  2143. anyone who

  2144. anyone who wants to

2145. come and have a debate

  2146. about that

  2147. who's busier

  2148. feel free

  2149. I've got three kids

2150. we can have a go

  2151. so I know what

  2152. busyness is

  2153. and if it's not

  2154. a weekly thing

  2155. then fine

  2156. it's a bi-weekly thing

  2157. if it's not that

  2158. if it's a monthly thing

  2159. whatever it is

  2160. that makes you

  2161. just a little bit

  2162. uncomfortable

  2163. where you are

  2164. forcing yourself

  2165. to just prioritize

2166. just that little bit more

  2167. I'm in

  2168. and I'll help you

  2169. that's what I said

  2170. to the fellowship

  2171. how about you

  2172. call yourselves higher

2173. and I'll just join you there

  2174. whatever you think

  2175. you can do

  2176. let's do it together

  2177. can we do that

2178. now we're going to finish

2179. actually we've run out of time

  2180. so maybe we actually

  2181. won't respond with a song

  2182. but we will respond

  2183. with this

2184. and I hope this works

2185. there is a QR code here

  2186. because I realize

  2187. there's something

  2188. I can't say all this stuff

2189. about being as a community

  2190. together

  2191. without truly knowing

  2192. I look around

2193. and of course I see

2194. enough people that I do know

2195. but I also see a lot of people

2196. that I do not know

2197. so call this a census

  2198. if you will

  2199. if you're completely uncomfortable

  2200. and you're literally

  2201. just visiting one time

  2202. and then you're never

2203. going to be here again

  2204. then it's okay

  2205. please feel free

  2206. not to do it

2207. but if you are actually

2208. part of this church community

2209. this is how we're going to respond

  2210. I hope

  2211. I think it's only going to

2212. take us a few minutes

2213. because we actually want to know

  2214. who we actually have

2215. so if you can scan that QR code

2216. we all love the satisfaction

2217. of scanning a QR code

2218. so even if you're not interested

  2219. just pretend

2220. and you can just have the satisfaction

  2221. of pressing the link

2222. because we want to know you

2223. and this is just a simple

  2224. simple form

  2225. all the Asians

  2226. who are ASTAR students

2227. there is no right or wrong answer

  2228. just fill it out

2229. because we just want to know

2230. we might have to do this

  2231. for a few weeks

  2232. because of course

2233. some people might not be here

  2234. this week

2235. but can you fill out that form

  2236. I don't think it will take

  2237. a long time

  2238. at least that's what

  2239. I was hoping it wouldn't do

  2240. there's one

  2241. just one little thing

2242. that I want to share

  2243. with you

  2244. that's just funny

  2245. is I asked

  2246. Pastor Gabe

  2247. can you also have

  2248. an option there

  2249. for someone to upload

  2250. a picture

  2251. because we'll just get

  2252. a whole name of

  2253. a list of names

  2254. and we'll be like

  2255. okay who's that

  2256. I don't know who that is

2257. and then we'll just leave it there

  2258. but I'll stress here

2259. if you really don't want

2260. to show us your face

2261. then go to another church

  2262. no only joking

  2263. only joking

  2264. if you

  2265. okay

2266. if I know your face

  2267. Julian

  2268. you don't need to

2269. you don't need to show your face

2270. I don't need more pictures of you

  2271. you can choose

  2272. one that you

  2273. like climbing the Himalayas

  2274. or a cool one

  2275. if you wanted to

  2276. or if you

2277. just do a selfie now

  2278. and you're not bothered

  2279. we won't share this

  2280. it won't post

2281. it won't be on any kind of

2282. social media account at all

2283. it'll literally just be for

  2284. Christina and I

  2285. and our team

2286. just are going to go

  2287. wait

  2288. okay that person's interested

2289. but I actually have no idea

2290. what that person looks like

  2291. is that person

  2292. a short Chinese

  2293. person with black hair

  2294. and oh it is

  2295. okay

  2296. now we're in trouble

  2297. so we just

  2298. we just need something

  2299. to help us

  2300. okay so

  2301. actually that's how

  2302. we're going to respond

2303. and maybe I'll ask you

  2304. to do this prayerfully

2305. if you've been sat here

  2306. in this church service

  2307. for a while

  2308. and you're not quite

  2309. as extroverted as Caleb

2310. who has just kind of

  2311. crashed our community

  2312. and just invaded it

  2313. into every space

  2314. and every gathering

  2315. and every sporting event

  2316. to his credit

  2317. if you're not that

  2318. that's fine

2319. not all of us need to be

  2320. Caleb

2321. but if you're just like

  2322. okay

  2323. I think it's now time

  2324. I actually

  2325. actually

2326. also there are some of you

2327. who have actually been around

  2328. for a while

2329. and you asked us already

  2330. for all this information

  2331. you're like hey

  2332. you should know already

  2333. that I've been waiting

  2334. for a group

  2335. my apologies to you

  2336. that it's taking us

  2337. a long time

  2338. obviously just finding

  2339. the right people

2340. to put in the right groups

  2341. is no small task

  2342. and so thank you

  2343. for your patience

  2344. thank you for just

  2345. spending time

  2346. highlight that there

  2347. tell me

  2348. James I actually spoke

2349. to you four months ago

  2350. and you still haven't

  2351. done anything for me

  2352. that's okay

2353. and just please let us know

  2354. because actually

  2355. I feel as though

2356. it's now time for us

2357. to do a proper sense

  2358. just around

2359. just to see who we have

  2360. is that okay

  2361. and be prayerful

  2362. if you've been wondering

  2363. and wrestling

  2364. then I hope

  2365. this is the time

  2366. where you commit

  2367. I know there are

  2368. those of us here

  2369. who are also

  2370. so involved

  2371. so involved

  2372. in the wider church

  2373. at KFC

2374. May I'm looking at you

  2375. and I know that you're here

2376. for different reasons as well

  2377. and you're not here

2378. to rush into a group

  2379. or anything

2380. you're part of the wider

  2381. church of KFC

2382. we'd like to know that too

2383. we just like to see who

2384. is actually coming to worship

  2385. with us

  2386. and that's actually

2387. going to be the way

  2388. that we end

  2389. this gathering time today

2390. I know this will take us

  2391. a little while

2392. but maybe what I'll do

2393. is I'll end with a word of prayer

  2394. and then please

2395. if you're filling out the form

  2396. just do complete it

  2397. I realise if we

  2398. if we send out

  2399. the link or somehow

  2400. we often forget

2401. and so we just wanted

  2402. to use that time

  2403. to do it today

  2404. so we actually know

2405. and know that we're praying

2406. know that we're praying for you

  2407. know that we're praying

  2408. for people

  2409. and going okay

  2410. who

  2411. we're considering

2412. how to stir you up

2413. in love and good works

  2414. we're gonna look at

  2415. what are the combinations

2416. of people that will work

  2417. there's something about

  2418. to be said about

  2419. having homogenous groups

  2420. where there are people

2421. who are just like you

2422. like just the same things

  2423. that you do

  2424. and that's the space

  2425. where you can feel

  2426. the most safe

  2427. and seen

  2428. and heard

  2429. and understood

  2430. and we need

  2431. those spaces too

  2432. but Henry Nowen

  2433. also says

  2434. community is where

  2435. you are faced

  2436. with the people

  2437. that you really

  2438. don't enjoy

  2439. spending time with

2440. and as I ask that

  2441. I am sure

  2442. right now

  2443. especially those of you

  2444. smiling at me

  2445. you're thinking of

  2446. someone in your group

  2447. you're like

  2448. what I could do

  2449. without seeing that person

  2450. every week

  2451. and I'll be saying

  2452. to you

  2453. perfect

  2454. that is the person

  2455. that God has placed

  2456. in your life

  2457. to conform you

  2458. to the image

  2459. of the sun

  2460. use that person

  2461. love that person

2462. to be more like Christ

  2463. and final thing

  2464. as I encourage us

  2465. about life groups

  2466. and getting involved

2467. I am not gonna be here

  2468. saying hey

  2469. our life groups

  2470. are just great places

  2471. of spiritual nurture

  2472. and consistency

  2473. and discipline

  2474. and care

  2475. and just

  2476. that's where we strive

  2477. to be

  2478. what it looks like

2479. on a day to day

2480. on a week to week

  2481. it varies

  2482. just like every group

  2483. there's some groups

  2484. that are super close

  2485. and there's some groups

  2486. that are still growing

  2487. and struggling

  2488. so I don't want to

  2489. paint a picture here

2490. of join the life groups

  2491. they're gonna be

2492. the best place you live

  2493. sometimes it will

  2494. and sometimes it won't

2495. but I know for sure

  2496. I have full assurance

  2497. actually

  2498. that Christ is using

  2499. those groups

  2500. any group

  2501. to conform us

  2502. to be like him

  2503. and that's what I give

  2504. thanks the most for

2505. can I finish with prayer

  2506. and you promise

  2507. to finish the form

  2508. alright okay

  2509. Jesus thank you

  2510. for your sacrifice

  2511. thank you that you

  2512. have paved the way

  2513. that you are seated

2514. and that you invite us

2515. to come and sit with you

  2516. in the heavenly places

2517. so we who were dead

  2518. in our trespasses

  2519. and sins

  2520. who followed

2521. the course of this world

2522. we get to be made alive

  2523. together

  2524. because of your kindness

  2525. and your great love

  2526. would you make us

  2527. into the temple

  2528. the dwelling place

  2529. where you reside

  2530. would you give us

  2531. what we need

2532. to be able to abide

  2533. in you

  2534. would you break down

  2535. every dividing wall

  2536. of hostility

  2537. and through you

  2538. and what you did

  2539. on the cross

  2540. we all have access

  2541. now

  2542. to the father

  2543. the access is personal

  2544. but the command

  2545. is plural

  2546. help us to

  2547. live out

  2548. the great commandment

  2549. and the great commission

  2550. together

  2551. bind us together

  2552. in harmony

  2553. to be

  2554. the same spirit

  2555. same heart

  2556. same faith

  2557. same love

  2558. same mind

  2559. show us Lord

2560. how to be more like you

2561. how to be your body

2562. we draw near to you

  2563. the head

  2564. the source

  2565. the beginning

  2566. and the end

  2567. in your name

  2568. we pray

  2569. amen

  2570. once you are finished

  2571. class is dismissed

  2572. see you next week

  2573. you
