  1. As we sit, let's bow our heads and pray together.

  2. Our gracious Father, we thank you for your word.

  3. And Lord, we thank you especially that our Lord taught that your word is truth.

  4. ! And that your truth can set people like us free.

  5. And so we ask now, Father, in confidence that you would send your spirit upon your people gathered.

  6. That we might discern your truth.

  7. That we might apply it to our lives.

  8. And become the people you want us to be.

  9. In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  10. So, even the least observant people amongst you will have noticed that it is Covenant Sunday.

  11. And there's a sense in which I always approach this day with a certain amount of dread.

  12. And it's because of this that I don't know how much the words of the prayer which you said together impacted you.

  13. But I mean, they are mighty words.

  14. I mean, I am sure there might be some people of a more secular background who would read these words and think,

  15. anybody who would say them must be two kangaroos short in the top paddock.

  16. I am no longer my own but yours.

  17. Put me to what you will.

  18. Rank me with whom you will.

  19. Put me to doing.

  20. Put me to suffering.

  21. Let me be employed for you or brought low for you.

  22. See, the reason why I'm anxious about Covenant Sunday is,

  23. I say these things,

  24. but will tomorrow be exactly like today as far as my life is concerned?

  25. Some of you may remember that great movie, Groundhog Day, with Bill Murray,

  26. where he played the part of, I think the guy's name was Phil Connors.

  27. And he was a rather self-indulgent weatherman,

  28. and was very cynical about just about everything.

  29. And he went on a weekend, maybe a week away, in this unpronounceable town.

  30. And he went to bed on the first night, woke up the next morning.

  31. As I recall, it was a radio alarm.

  32. And his radio alarm started, and it was that wonderful song by Sonny and Cher.

  33. I got you, babe.

  34. And then there was some banter with the disc jockeys on the radio station,

  35. and then he got up, and that would be normal.

  36. Except the next day, his radio alarm went off,

  37. and it was Sonny and Cher singing, I got you, babe.

  38. And the banter that followed was exactly the same as it had been the day before.

  39. And what had happened was, somehow, we're not told how,

  40. he got himself caught in a time loop,

  41. so that that day kept repeating.

  42. And because, like many of us, he had an element of self-indulgence about him,

  43. he manipulated that time loop for his own good.

  44. He manipulated it so he could field his carnal appetite

  45. with women, with booze, with food.

  46. And the only thing that could break him was when he actually pursued,

  47. I think with dubious motives, a woman called Rita.

  48. And it was when he fell in love with her properly

  49. that he was released from the time loop.

  50. It would be a great shame, wouldn't it,

  51. if we said that covenant prayer,

  52. but actually, tomorrow,

  53. our behavior,

  54. our person,

  55. was exactly the same as the day before,

  56. and would be exactly the same as the next day,

  57. the next day, the next day.

  58. See, Wesley thought,

  59. I think it was the 12th of August in 1755,

  60. that he stood up and for the first time

  61. read the covenant service

  62. in the Huguenot Church in the east end of London,

  63. known imaginatively as the French Chapel.

  64. It's the first time.

  65. Wesley, of course,

  66. was obsessed at periods in his life,

  67. not consistently, like most of us,

  68. but for periods of his life,

  69. he was obsessed with the idea

  70. of total submission to God.

  71. You kind of read Wesley's journal

  72. and you think to yourself,

  73. was he getting much joy out of his faith?

  74. Because he was just obsessed with the idea.

  75. I want to be perfectly submitted to God.

  76. I really want to lay down my life for him.

  77. And I want to say a prayer like the covenant prayer

  78. and mean it.

  79. I mean,

  80. it would be a pretty empty thing, wouldn't it,

  81. to say that prayer.

  82. And really not mean it.

  83. It's kind of falling with the herd mentality.

  84. Everybody else is saying it must be okay.

  85. So a covenant is an agreement.

  86. Unfortunately, I think in our culture today,

  87. it has an unfortunate ramification

  88. because it has to do with house sales.

  89. And you hope that your solicitor will pick up,

  90. if you're buying a house,

  91. what restrictive covenants there might be.

  92. I think most of us feel that covenants

  93. probably are inclined to be restrictive.

  94. Actually, what they are simply is an agreement.

  95. Usually an agreement that is entered in

  96. with the initiative of one person

  97. who has a motive.

  98. Lawyers call consideration of something.

  99. Well, let me tell you,

  100. if you take seriously the covenant

  101. that you've entered into today,

  102. this will be liberating for you.

  103. It will not be restrictive.

  104. It will be liberating.

  105. And the initiative in this covenant

  106. is God himself.

  107. The Bible is full, not full,

  108. repeatedly God makes covenants with his people.

  109. He made a covenant with Abraham.

  110. You remember?

  111. If Abraham was prepared to leave

  112. his middle class life

  113. and go off on a scary journey,

  114. he knew not where,

  115. then God said, I'll bless you.

  116. God made a covenant with Moses.

  117. He said, you'll leave people.

  118. And Moses wasn't too keen on that assignment.

  119. He said, you're not me.

  120. I can't even speak properly.

  121. And so God said, don't worry,

  122. I'll give you Aaron.

  123. Mixed blessing, some would say.

  124. And then we come to the prophets.

  125. We read from that.

  126. You remember at the beginning of the service,

  127. it takes a different kind of tenor.

  128. Because Jeremiah prophesies,

  129. there will be a day

  130. when Judaism will be turned on its head.

  131. Why?

  132. Because the way a Jew could become righteous

  133. was by keeping the law.

  134. I mean, not just the first five books

  135. of the Bible, the Torah,

  136. but all the stuff that the rabbis added to it,

  137. hundreds and hundreds of regulations

  138. that they added to it.

  139. You want to be righteous and be a Jew?

  140. You've got to keep the law.

  141. And as Paul says,

  142. in the Corinthian literature,

  143. if you let down,

  144. if you let down God

  145. in one aspect of the law,

  146. you've cancelled,

  147. you know, you've just let down

  148. in every aspect of the law.

  149. But Jeremiah prophesied something

  150. that would turn the whole deal inside out.

  151. He said,

  152. there will be a day

  153. when that law

  154. that Moses staggered down Mount Sinai with,

  155. ten tablets of stone,

  156. that law will no longer be

  157. on tablets of stone out there,

  158. no longer in the rantings of the rabbis,

  159. no, I'm going to put my law where?

  160. In your mind

  161. and in your heart.

  162. Imagine.

  163. That's why we're saved by grace

  164. according to St. Paul.

  165. It's not about keeping the law.

  166. It's not about doing our best.

  167. It's not about trying hard.

  168. It's about a God of grace

  169. who loves you,

  170. loves you,

  171. even though you don't deserve it.

  172. What was God's consideration

  173. on the covenant that he made

  174. and that we have made today?

  175. His consideration is his love for you.

  176. I'm a little nervous about

  177. banging on about the love of God

  178. because I don't want to make you think

  179. that Christianity is just a kind of

  180. love thing.

  181. You know, like Hyde Anderson,

  182. 1964,

  183. San Francisco.

  184. No, this is

  185. total.

  186. This is a commitment

  187. to a completely

  188. different way of living.

  189. And God,

  190. in his wisdom,

  191. decided

  192. it would be best

  193. in all those covenants

  194. for people to make

  195. those covenants

  196. with God

  197. together

  198. so that we have each other

  199. to help each other,

  200. to pray for each other,

  201. to rebuke each other.

  202. when we go wrong.

  203. You know,

  204. Paul said in Ephesians,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  205. chapter 4,

  206. that we should speak the truth

  207. to one another in love.

  208. I'm not sure there's enough

  209. of that in our churches

  210. and I wouldn't want to go

  211. to a church

  212. where there was too much of it.

  213. Speaking the truth

  214. in love.

  215. I've heard Christian folks

  216. say the most terrible things

  217. to each other

  218. and when you say,

  219. why did you say that?

  220. They say,

  221. I was just being honest.

  222. That's not what the Bible says.

  223. I mean,

  224. sometimes the truth

  225. is cruel,

  226. isn't it?

  227. No,

  228. the Bible says,

  229. speak the truth

  230. in love.

  231. But the biggest sin

  232. in churches is,

  233. we think because

  234. we're supposed to be

  235. loving,

  236. that we should never,

  237. ever try and speak

  238. truthfully to someone else.

  239. So terrible behavior

  240. in churches

  241. goes by and by and by

  242. and never gets challenged.

  243. The covenant

  244. you've made today,

  245. my friend,

  246. if you take it seriously,

  247. and I can't make you

  248. take it seriously,

  249. but the covenant

  250. you make today,

  251. if you take it seriously,

  252. is life changing.

  253. It's church changing.

  254. It's community changing.

  255. And who knows,

  256. maybe even world changing.

  257. And you ask yourself

  258. this question,

  259. how could God

  260. ask me to say that stuff,

  261. really?

  262. I mean,

  263. seriously?

  264. Put me to what you put me

  265. to suffering?

  266. Isn't that a kind of

  267. masochistic tendency

  268. that I really be better

  269. not to go there?

  270. No.

  271. Remember,

  272. Wesley's big motivation

  273. was total submission.

  274. The Garden of Gethsemane.

  275. When Jesus was in the kind

  276. of mental pain

  277. that's unimaginable.

  278. And he even considered

  279. not doing what God

  280. wanted him to do.

  281. Take this cup away

  282. from me, Lord,

  283. he prayed.

  284. And then he said,

  285. not my will,

  286. but thy will be done.

  287. I mean,

  288. interestingly,

  289. you may have missed it,

  290. you said that prayer.

  291. Our Father,

  292. who art in heaven,

  293. hallowed be thy name.

  294. Your will be done

  295. on earth

  296. as it is in heaven.

  297. Rolls off the tongue,

  298. doesn't it?

  299. You may have no idea

  300. what you just prayed.

  301. And this would be

  302. an awful imperative

  303. to us,

  304. wouldn't it?

  305. If it wasn't for the fact

  306. that God hasn't left us

  307. alone to struggle.

  308. To struggle with our

  309. half-heartedness,

  310. to struggle with our

  311. disobedience,

  312. to struggle with our

  313. lack of faith,

  314. to discover,

  315. to just not left us

  316. alone with that.

  317. When I leave you,

  318. said Jesus in John 16,

  319. I will send you

  320. an advocate,

  321. a counselor.

  322. He said,

  323. who will teach you

  324. everything that I

  325. have taught you?

  326. See,

  327. we sing that

  328. old chorus,

  329. don't we?

  330. No,

  331. never alone.

  332. There's a wonderful

  333. truth in that.

  334. you've not been

  335. left alone to

  336. struggle.

  337. To struggle with

  338. the commitments

  339. you made

  340. in the covenant

  341. prayer this morning.

  342. This is truly

  343. amazing,

  344. I think,

  345. that God doesn't

  346. leave us alone

  347. to mess with it.

  348. And of course,

  349. the thing about

  350. this covenant

  351. is,

  352. the reason God

  353. can ask me

  354. to,

  355. why Wesley

  356. can ask me

  357. to pray that

  358. prayer in the

  359. presence of God

  360. and his people

  361. is because

  362. of what it

  363. cost God

  364. to send his

  365. son to planet

  366. earth,

  367. to live amongst

  368. us,

  369. to be what

  370. Saint Anselm

  371. called the

  372. God-man.

  373. Only he

  374. could save us.

  375. And the cost

  376. of that salvation

  377. was that terrible

  378. death on the

  379. cross of Calvary.

  380. vindicated

  381. by the

  382. resurrection

  383. of Jesus

  384. and glorified

  385. in his

  386. ascendancy

  387. into heaven.

  388. I love the

  389. words of that

  390. old hymn.

  391. I quote it to

  392. you now.

  393. God,

  394. I quote it to

  395. God,

  396. and when I

  397. think about

  398. the cross,

  399. I close my

  400. eyes and

  401. try to see

  402. the cruel

  403. nails and

  404. crown of

  405. thorns and

  406. Jesus crucified

  407. for me.

  408. I'm going to

  409. ask you in a

  410. moment to

  411. close your

  412. eyes and

  413. try and see

  414. Jesus on the

  415. cross,

  416. those cruel

  417. nails through

  418. his hands,

  419. the spear

  420. through his

  421. middle,

  422. and see

  423. what that

  424. tremendous

  425. sacrifice

  426. does for

  427. you.

  428. If we

  429. just allow

  430. today to

  431. be our

  432. groundhog day,

  433. tomorrow will

  434. be just the

  435. same as

  436. yesterday and

  437. the same as

  438. the next day.

  439. we have to

  440. be serious

  441. about this,

  442. my dear

  443. friends.

  444. Let us

  445. pray that

  446. tomorrow will

  447. be different.

  448. It may not

  449. be easy,

  450. but this I

  451. know,

  452. that whatever

  453. life throws

  454. at me,

  455. I will

  456. still hold

  457. together.

  458. Because God

  459. in the power

  460. of his Holy

  461. Spirit is with

  462. me, teaching

  463. me, encouraging

  464. me, rebuking

  465. me.

  466. Tell you a

  467. story about a

  468. young woman

  469. just to

  470. close.

  471. She was

  472. called Joyce

  473. and she was

  474. in the

  475. congregation I

  476. served in

  477. Slough.

  478. I know.

  479. You know,

  480. Slough is the

  481. kind of place

  482. where people

  483. have got bumper

  484. stickers that

  485. say happiness

  486. is Slough in

  487. my rearview

  488. mirror.

  489. And we

  490. were a very

  491. poor congregation

  492. in the sense

  493. that nobody

  494. was wealthy,

  495. nobody had

  496. much money.

  497. We were poor

  498. in many ways,

  499. but spiritually

  500. God made that

  501. little group

  502. of people

  503. very rich.

  504. And in that

  505. congregation

  506. was a woman

  507. who had a

  508. terrible,

  509. terrible life

  510. script.

  511. She married a

  512. man and he

  513. had not,

  514. the day after

  515. they got married

  516. he decided he

  517. wasn't going to

  518. work anymore.

  519. And he used to

  520. lie in bed all

  521. day after

  522. the pretense

  523. of having a

  524. bad back.

  525. Although if

  526. the situation

  527. required it,

  528. he could move

  529. pretty nimbly.

  530. And so they

  531. were just

  532. clocking up

  533. debt,

  534. day by day,

  535. week by week.

  536. And in the

  537. church,

  538. people knew

  539. about this.

  540. And one day

  541. this lady,

  542. single lady,

  543. I think she's

  544. probably three

  545. or four years

  546. older than me,

  547. she came to

  548. me,

  549. this would be,

  550. she'd be 40-ish

  551. at this stage.

  552. And she said,

  553. Mike,

  554. can I have a

  555. word with you?

  556. And I said,

  557. yeah.

  558. And she said,

  559. I'm really

  560. burdened by

  561. Alan and

  562. Chris' debt.

  563. And I feel

  564. God is asking

  565. me to do

  566. something.

  567. I said,

  568. what would

  569. that be?

  570. She said,

  571. well,

  572. do you know

  573. how much

  574. their debt

  575. is?

  576. I said,

  577. I'd gather

  578. it's three

  579. and a half

  580. thousand.

  581. She said,

  582. yeah,

  583. I heard

  584. that.

  585. She said,

  586. I feel

  587. God is

  588. asking me

  589. to give

  590. my life

  591. savings

  592. to them,

  593. three and

  594. a half

  595. thousand

  596. pounds.

  597. I was

  598. full of

  599. kind of

  600. nervousness

  601. about this.

  602. I'm like,

  603. you mustn't

  604. do that.

  605. You know,

  606. you've got

  607. no idea.

  608. They might

  609. have the

  610. same debt.

  611. She said,

  612. Mike,

  613. I feel

  614. God is

  615. asking me

  616. to do

  617. this.

  618. She gave

  619. it.

  620. Alan,

  621. the husband,

  622. from his

  623. bedside,

  624. I don't

  625. think he

  626. ever gave

  627. his life

  628. to Christ,

  629. but a

  630. week later

  631. he went

  632. and got

  633. himself a

  634. job.

  635. He was

  636. a joiner

  637. by

  638. God.

  639. And I

  640. tell that

  641. story

  642. because I

  643. think

  644. Joyce

  645. understood

  646. what kind

  647. of commitment

  648. is the

  649. kind of

  650. commitment

  651. that God

  652. honors.

  653. I tell

  654. that story

  655. because Joyce

  656. reminds me

  657. that we're

  658. not just

  659. called together

  660. today to

  661. come in

  662. this house

  663. and say

  664. hefty things

  665. and walk

  666. out again.

  667. No.

  668. We're

  669. asked to

  670. tell God

  671. that we're

  672. fully

  673. submitted

  674. and then,

  675. this is the

  676. difficult bit,

  677. we're

  678. supposed to

  679. live like

  680. we're totally

  681. surrendered.

  682. Holy Spirit

  683. there to

  684. help us

  685. but you're

  686. there to

  687. help us,

  688. you're

  689. there to

  690. help me

  691. with this,

  692. I'm here

  693. to help

  694. you with

  695. that.

  696. That's

  697. why we

  698. said it

  699. together.

  700. Put me

  701. to doing,

  702. put me

  703. to suffering,

  704. put me

  705. to that

  706. costly

  707. kind of

  708. sacrifice

  709. that God

  710. showed me

  711. in his

  712. love for

  713. me,

  714. in that

  715. God so

  716. loved the

  717. world that

  718. he sent

  719. his only

  720. son that

  721. whoever

  722. believes in

  723. him should

  724. not perish

  725. but have

  726. everlasting

  727. life.

  728. I need

  729. your help.

  730. We need

  731. each other,

  732. we need

  733. the power

  734. of the

  735. Holy Spirit

  736. in our

  737. lives.

  738. And if

  739. we're

  740. prepared to

  741. take that

  742. covenant

  743. seriously,

  744. we have

  745. a fighting

  746. chance.

  747. Change

  748. life can

  749. mean a

  750. changed

  751. family,

  752. a changed

  753. family can

  754. mean a

  755. changed

  756. church,

  757. a changed

  758. church can

  759. mean a

  760. changed

  761. community,

  762. a changed

  763. community can

  764. mean a

  765. changed

  766. county.

  767. It goes

  768. on and

  769. on and

  770. on.

  771. That's the

  772. way it's

  773. meant to

  774. be, the

  775. multiplier

  776. effect of

  777. committed

  778. Christianity.

  779. I don't

  780. know about

  781. you but

  782. I can't

  783. end by

  784. saying this,

  785. I am

  786. well up

  787. for it.

  788. I just

  789. need a bit

  790. of help

  791. like you

  792. do and

  793. like God

  794. offers.

  795. In the

  796. name of

  797. that amazing

  798. God who

  799. covenants

  800. with us

  801. because of

  802. his love,

  803. Father,

  804. Son and

  805. Holy Spirit,

  806. the people

  807. who agreed

  808. said together,

  809. Amen.
