  1. Good morning. Let's just bow our heads in prayer for a moment. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word.

  2. ! We thank you for this series looking at Christian character.

  3. ! We pray that you would pour out your spirit upon us, that our characters would be moulded and

  4. shaped, that we might become more like you. In your precious name. Amen.

  5. Well, this morning, as you're all aware by now, we're continuing with our series on Christian

  6. character. We've looked at living holy lives, showing compassion, resisting temptation,

  7. and last week, being humble. Today, we're thinking about being called to persevere. I wonder what

  8. comes to your minds when we think about the word persevere. The dictionary describes its meaning as

  9. to continue in a course of action, even in the face of difficulty, or with little or no indication of

  10. success. I wonder if some of you are persevering with something at the moment, or perhaps you can

  11. remember a time in the past when you had to persevere. We all, at some time in our life,

  12. we'll be called to persevere if we want to grow in our relationship with Jesus and become more like him.

  13. In James chapter 1 verse 12, it says,

    James 1:12

  14. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, because having stood the test, that person will receive the

  15. crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

  16. I don't know about you, but I find it quite easy to persevere when life is comfortable, and quite easy.

  17. But it's when life is difficult that persevering becomes difficult. It's the very nature of the thing.

  18. And as James says, it becomes a test of our faith. Are we going to keep going, or are we going to give up?

  19. James also tells us in chapter 1 verses 2 to 4,

  20. Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith

  21. produces perseverance. James encourages us to allow perseverance to finish its work in us,

  22. to achieve spiritual maturity and completeness.

  23. I'm sure we all of us here this morning would say we want to achieve spiritual maturity,

  24. but we don't really want to persevere.

  25. We want life to be comfortable and easy.

  26. We don't really want to struggle, do we?

  27. When the title of this week's sermon was given to me,

  28. I was praying and thinking about the word persevere,

  29. and I was reminded of a particular time in my life when I had to persevere,

  30. which I would like to share with you,

  31. in the hope that it will encourage you in your relationship with Jesus,

  32. and times in your life when you have to persevere.

  33. I was in my 20s when I came to faith,

  34. and I immersed myself in the life of the Anglican Church where I came to faith.

  35. I worked during the week as a full-time personal assistant to a sales director,

  36. which I loved doing, and I loved all aspects of church life.

  37. I even became the Deanery Synod representative for a period of time,

  38. which was something else.

  39. I was very enthusiastic about my newfound faith,

  40. wanted to share it with everyone,

  41. and wanted to grow in my faith, or so I thought.

  42. After approximately five years,

  43. one evening when I was helping with the church youth group,

  44. somebody came to speak from the Christian organization called Oasis Trust

  45. about their work in India.

  46. I was completely gripped.

  47. The man mentioned the verse in James 2, verse 17,

    James 2:17

  48. which says,

  49. Faith without action is dead.

  50. At the end of the evening,

  51. I wanted to put my faith into action

  52. and go to India and work with Oasis Trust.

  53. They had a six-month project,

  54. working in a team in Bombay,

  55. it's now of course called Mumbai,

  56. and in Bangalore.

  57. I talked to my vicar,

  58. my parents,

  59. and applied to the project,

  60. and I was accepted to go to Mumbai in October 1994.

  61. I was thrilled,

  62. and couldn't wait to go

  63. and put my faith into action.

  64. Everything was great at first.

  65. We arrived in Mumbai one afternoon.

  66. The airport was like something I'd never experienced.

  67. So many people.

  68. This was crowded on a new level.

  69. When we left the airport,

  70. it was another new experience.

  71. The roads,

  72. the sounds,

  73. the sights,

  74. the smells,

  75. were all overloading our senses.

  76. It was like being in a different world.

  77. There were 12 of us,

  78. six in Mumbai

  79. and six in Bangalore

  80. with two leaders overseeing us

  81. who were such lovely, godly,

  82. caring people with a strong faith.

  83. There were three of us in my team,

  84. Simone from New Zealand,

  85. Mariana from Holland,

  86. and myself,

  87. who was to be the team leader.

  88. We arrived at our church

  89. in the north of Mumbai,

  90. and we met Pastor Shindi and his wife,

  91. who we were going to be living and working with.

  92. They told us that, sadly,

  93. the accommodation we were to have

  94. was no longer available,

  95. so temporarily,

  96. we were to stay in a small room

  97. on the ground floor of the church building.

  98. Our three beds just about fitted in,

  99. but we did have an en-suite shower.

  100. That is to say,

  101. a tap that was high up

  102. and a large bucket.

  103. It was challenging,

  104. but manageable,

  105. and we soon settled in.

  106. Little did we know

  107. we would end up staying in that room

  108. for the whole six months

  109. as the other accommodation

  110. never materialized.

  111. We spent our days

  112. planning our involvement

  113. in the church services,

  114. planning our time

  115. with children's and youth work,

  116. and visiting people

  117. with the pastor.

  118. We met a lot of people

  119. who had very little materially,

  120. but who had such a lot spiritually.

  121. It was a very humbling time.

  122. Our little room that we shared

  123. soon became quite sufficient.

  124. Once a week,

  125. we met the rest of the team

  126. and spent the day together,

  127. sharing our experiences,

  128. praying,

  129. worshipping together,

  130. and generally encouraging each other.

  131. And we followed a Bible series

  132. on faith.

  133. I woke up one morning

  134. after a couple of weeks

  135. and felt completely overwhelmed.

  136. It was baking hot.

  137. I was sleeping badly.

  138. Some of Simone's behavior

  139. was inappropriate.

  140. She was flirting

  141. with some of the young Indian lads.

  142. Marianne was missing

  143. all things Dutch

  144. and became incredibly grumpy.

  145. And according to the pastor's wife,

  146. who I shared with,

  147. well, it was my problem

  148. as I was the team leader,

  149. and I had to sort them out soon.

  150. I decided to go home.

  151. It was all too much.

  152. I have to be very honest

  153. and say I wasn't actually homesick.

  154. I just felt I couldn't cope

  155. with the challenges

  156. I was confronted with in Mumbai.

  157. I wanted to go back

  158. to my familiar, comfortable job

  159. and the home that I left in England.

  160. I rang the project leader,

  161. Andy Matheson,

  162. and arranged to visit him.

  163. He and his wife,

  164. a lovely, faith-filled, godly people

  165. who I'm still in touch with to this day.

  166. I was sure they would agree to my request

  167. and we would sort a flight home.

  168. I went to their home.

  169. It was as though I saw them yesterday

  170. as I recount this.

  171. And I put my request to them.

  172. Their response and advice

  173. and care of me that day

  174. has stayed with me

  175. for the 33 years since

  176. and influenced my ministry

  177. in so many ways.

  178. I've had similar conversations

  179. with many people

  180. throughout my Christian life.

  181. They completely understood

  182. me being overwhelmed.

  183. But in a nutshell,

  184. they said the best place

  185. for me to be

  186. was the place

  187. that God wanted me to be.

  188. and that wherever he was,

  189. he would equip

  190. and help me to cope.

  191. And I needed to put my faith

  192. and trust in him.

  193. I realised at that moment

  194. my faith was quite weak.

  195. Andy and Joan prayed

  196. and as soon as they started praying,

  197. I knew deep in my heart

  198. that God wanted me to stay in Mumbai.

  199. I had to put my trust in him

  200. and give him all my struggles

  201. and allow him to help me.

  202. It was a test of faith.

  203. He was calling me to persevere.

  204. After they prayed,

  205. Andy and Joan asked me

  206. what I thought God was saying.

  207. And I said I believed

  208. God wanted me to stay in Mumbai.

  209. They said the same.

  210. Of course they knew

  211. without praying.

  212. They were just so wonderfully God,

  213. so spirit-filled

  214. and God led

  215. in the way they handled it.

  216. And they said

  217. they would help me stay

  218. and support me.

  219. And they really did.

  220. I left them

  221. to return to my small room

  222. and all the challenges.

  223. I was encouraged

  224. by their response

  225. and support

  226. but still felt

  227. completely overwhelmed

  228. and over-challenged.

  229. I wanted to put my faith

  230. in action

  231. but it was quite clear

  232. that God wanted

  233. to strengthen my faith.

  234. Of course our faith

  235. is strengthened

  236. when we fully rely on Jesus.

  237. Corrie Ten Boom said

  238. you can never learn

  239. that Christ is all you need

  240. until Christ is all you have.

  241. I took it day by day.

  242. Some days I took it

  243. hour by hour

  244. putting my trust in God

  245. knowing I was where

  246. he wanted me

  247. and asking him to help me

  248. with each and every task.

  249. The feelings

  250. and desire to leave

  251. and go home

  252. were very strong

  253. and the enemy

  254. was having a field day.

  255. Not least

  256. when Simone

  257. started a relationship

  258. with the dear

  259. pastor's son.

  260. That was a real challenge.

  261. The pastor's wife

  262. really had it in for me

  263. then

  264. because anything

  265. that my team did

  266. I was responsible for.

  267. A few days after

  268. I met with Andy and Joan

  269. I received a letter.

  270. Nothing unusual about that.

  271. We're in the time

  272. when there weren't emails

  273. of course.

  274. But this particular letter

  275. was quite different.

  276. I didn't recognise

  277. the handwriting.

  278. I opened it

  279. and it was from a woman

  280. called Nancy Gowdy

  281. who I had met

  282. through a friend

  283. just before I left

  284. from Mumbai.

  285. I was at the friend's house

  286. and Nancy

  287. came round.

  288. I told her about

  289. my forthcoming trip

  290. to India

  291. and she asked

  292. to pray for me

  293. and she did.

  294. And she prayed

  295. in a very discerning way.

  296. It was very powerful

  297. and it was though

  298. we had known each other

  299. for years.

  300. In her letter

  301. she said

  302. she had continued

  303. to pray for me

  304. and God

  305. had told her

  306. to write to me

  307. and encourage me

  308. because I was struggling.

  309. I couldn't believe it

  310. that firstly

  311. God would be bothered

  312. to prompt Nancy

  313. to write to me

  314. and secondly

  315. for Nancy's commitment

  316. in doing just that.

  317. What she told me

  318. in the letter

  319. has really stayed

  320. with me since as well.

  321. She said that

  322. whatever problems

  323. I had

  324. and however large

  325. they were

  326. God was bigger

  327. and that in my mind

  328. I had to get

  329. a big picture

  330. of God

  331. and give him

  332. each of the problems

  333. I was facing.

  334. It was just

  335. what I needed

  336. to hear

  337. and it really

  338. encouraged me

  339. to remember

  340. God's bigness

  341. and focus on him

  342. and not my circumstances.

  343. She also encouraged me

  344. to get with God

  345. on my own

  346. praise

  347. and worship him

  348. and read my Bible.

  349. Our reading today

  350. was from Timothy

  351. and is of course

  352. part of Paul's letter

  353. that he wrote

  354. to Timothy

  355. to encourage him

  356. in his ministry.

  357. Never underestimate

  358. the power

  359. of encouragement

  360. and being obedient

  361. to encourage those

  362. that God

  363. puts on our hearts.

  364. Just as Nancy

  365. was obedient

  366. in writing to me

  367. her letter

  368. encouraged me

  369. to persevere

  370. and again

  371. trusting God

  372. and not my feelings.

  373. So from then on

  374. I spent more time

  375. with God

  376. to get a big picture

  377. of him

  378. in my mind.

  379. I looked to him

  380. more and more

  381. and ignored

  382. my feelings

  383. of wanting

  384. to go home.

  385. I shared my faith

  386. with the Indian people

  387. we were ministering to

  388. and this helped

  389. to increase

  390. my faith

  391. as we saw

  392. prayers answered

  393. wonderfully

  394. on a daily basis.

  395. I also asked

  396. God each day

  397. to fill me

  398. with his Holy Spirit

  399. aware

  400. that we are

  401. like buckets

  402. with holes in

  403. as we go about

  404. each day

  405. his Holy Spirit

  406. leaks out of us

  407. so we need

  408. to be refilled

  409. and I learned

  410. God has

  411. an endless supply.

  412. I also read

  413. God's promises

  414. in the Bible

  415. which increased

  416. my faith.

  417. I have chosen

  418. four verses

  419. that I believe

  420. God wants me

  421. to share

  422. with you today.

  423. I'm going to read

  424. them

  425. and I'd encourage

  426. you to really

  427. listen to them.

  428. You might want

  429. to close your eyes

  430. because I believe

  431. there are people

  432. here this morning

  433. who God

  434. specifically

  435. wants to hear

  436. these verses.

  437. Joshua

    Joshua 1:9

  438. chapter 1

  439. verse 9

  440. Isaiah 43

    Isaiah 43:2

  441. verse 2

  442. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1:8

  443. verse 8

  444. Isaiah 55

    Isaiah 55:8

  445. verse 8

  446. for my thoughts

  447. are not your

  448. thoughts

  449. neither are

  450. your ways

  451. my ways

  452. declares the

  453. Lord.

  454. The Bible

  455. is full

  456. of promises

  457. and I really

  458. would encourage

  459. you to make

  460. the time

  461. to read them

  462. and commit

  463. them to your

  464. mind

  465. and your

  466. heart.

  467. I don't

  468. think it's a

  469. decision

  470. in you

  471. deciding to

  472. do that

  473. if you

  474. went home

  475. today

  476. and started

  477. reading God's

  478. promises

  479. it's probably

  480. the best thing

  481. that you can

  482. do in your

  483. relationship

  484. with Jesus.

  485. You won't

  486. regret it.

  487. If you want

  488. to argue

  489. with me

  490. about that

  491. please do

  492. see me

  493. after the

  494. service.

  495. I'm happy

  496. to discuss

  497. it further.

  498. Gradually

  499. the desire

  500. to leave

  501. India

  502. decreased

  503. and I can

  504. remember

  505. waking up

  506. one morning

  507. again it

  508. I can

  509. picture it

  510. so well

  511. and I

  512. felt a

  513. new person.

  514. The anxiety

  515. and stress

  516. of being

  517. overwhelmed

  518. had disappeared

  519. the desire

  520. to leave

  521. had gone

  522. and Simone

  523. had ended

  524. her relationship

  525. with the

  526. pastor's son

  527. and was all

  528. out for Jesus.

  529. What an answer

  530. to prayer

  531. that was.

  532. I had a

  533. fresh peace

  534. and joy

  535. like I had

  536. never known

  537. and God's

  538. presence

  539. was just

  540. so tangible.

  541. I wanted

  542. to praise

  543. and worship

  544. God out

  545. loud.

  546. I didn't

  547. because I

  548. was sensitive

  549. to my team

  550. and I knew

  551. singing was

  552. not my

  553. top gift.

  554. I felt

  555. so full

  556. of the

  557. spirit

  558. and so

  559. thankful

  560. to God

  561. for his

  562. faithfulness

  563. and love

  564. and I

  565. was so

  566. pleased

  567. that he

  568. helped me

  569. to persevere

  570. and to

  571. stay.

  572. I didn't

  573. know

  574. at that

  575. time

  576. but 33

  577. years later

  578. I can see

  579. that God

  580. did a

  581. powerful work

  582. in me

  583. in India

  584. and in

  585. helping me

  586. to stay.

  587. There were

  588. many times

  589. in my life

  590. afterwards

  591. in going

  592. to Bible

  593. college

  594. being ordained

  595. in the Church

  596. of England

  597. having a

  598. curacy

  599. in Gloucester

  600. and my job

  601. as a team

  602. vicar

  603. that I

  604. know

  605. God

  606. called me

  607. to all

  608. of those

  609. things

  610. but sometimes

  611. I wanted

  612. to leave

  613. but being

  614. obedient

  615. to him

  616. and persevering

  617. in what he

  618. called me

  619. to do

  620. always

  621. won the

  622. day.

  623. That time

  624. in Mumbai

  625. laid the

  626. foundation

  627. for me

  628. to put

  629. God's

  630. will

  631. above

  632. my

  633. feelings.

  634. I would

  635. always

  636. encourage

  637. you

  638. to do

  639. the same.

  640. Be

  641. obedient

  642. to God's

  643. call

  644. give him

  645. your best

  646. and he

  647. will do

  648. the rest.

  649. Just before

  650. the end

  651. of my

  652. time in

  653. India

  654. the six

  655. months

  656. Andy

  657. Matheson

  658. asked to

  659. meet

  660. with me

  661. and again

  662. I remember

  663. the meeting

  664. as if it

  665. happened

  666. yesterday.

  667. It was a

  668. divine meeting.

  669. He basically

  670. asked me

  671. to come back

  672. to India

  673. to be the

  674. secretary

  675. to the

  676. director

  677. of Oasis

  678. India

  679. in

  680. Bangalore.

  681. I was

  682. thrilled

  683. to be

  684. asked

  685. after all

  686. that had

  687. happened.

  688. We both

  689. and my

  690. church

  691. family

  692. back in

  693. England

  694. agreed

  695. that God

  696. was calling

  697. me to

  698. do this

  699. and so

  700. when the

  701. six months

  702. was completed

  703. I returned

  704. home

  705. and raised

  706. money

  707. to return

  708. to India

  709. for 12

  710. months.

  711. I was

  712. and am

  713. to this

  714. day

  715. so thankful

  716. to God

  717. for calling

  718. me to

  719. India

  720. and for

  721. helping me

  722. to stay

  723. there.

  724. I'm

  725. thankful

  726. to Andy

  727. and Joan

  728. for their

  729. wise counsel

  730. and support

  731. of me

  732. and thankful

  733. to Nancy

  734. for her

  735. wonderful

  736. encouraging

  737. letter.

  738. They all

  739. helped me

  740. to get

  741. with God

  742. on my

  743. own

  744. and build

  745. my personal

  746. relationship

  747. with him

  748. which in

  749. turn

  750. helped me

  751. to persevere

  752. in staying.

  753. It strengthened

  754. my faith

  755. enormously

  756. and enabled

  757. me to be

  758. obedient to

  759. him.

  760. I want

  761. to close

  762. with some

  763. questions for

  764. you to

  765. consider

  766. to perhaps

  767. pray through

  768. and reflect

  769. on.

  770. Firstly

  771. where in

  772. your life

  773. is God

  774. calling you

  775. to persevere?

  776. Now

  777. is the

  778. time to

  779. spend more

  780. time with

  781. God

  782. asking him

  783. to fill

  784. you with

  785. his spirit

  786. to strengthen

  787. and equip

  788. you to

  789. persevere?

  790. Do you

  791. need to

  792. read your

  793. Bible more

  794. to be

  795. reminded of

  796. God's

  797. faithfulness

  798. and promises?

  799. If so

  800. when are you

  801. going to

  802. make the

  803. time to

  804. do that?

  805. Secondly

  806. is there

  807. someone you

  808. know who

  809. is struggling

  810. with perseverance

  811. at the moment

  812. who you can

  813. encourage with

  814. a letter

  815. with a text

  816. a phone

  817. call

  818. an email

  819. or even

  820. a visit?

  821. Who is

  822. God calling

  823. you to

  824. encourage to

  825. persevere at

  826. this time?

  827. Just as Paul

  828. encouraged Timothy

  829. with his letter

  830. and Nancy

  831. encouraged me

  832. with hers.

  833. let's just

  834. have a

  835. moment's

  836. quiet as

  837. we think

  838. about these

  839. questions

  840. and

  841. everything

  842. else

  843. that I've

  844. shared

  845. this morning

  846. and then

  847. I will

  848. close in

  849. prayer.

  850. I will

  851. Heavenly Father, when life gets tough and you call us to persevere,

  852. help us to remember that we are not alone.

  853. You are with us and your love surrounds us.

  854. May we also remember that your Holy Spirit strengthens and upholds us

  855. and your promises will never fail.

  856. Help us to be obedient to your call on our lives and allow you to strengthen our faith.

  857. Please help us to be an encouragement to others who are struggling to persevere.

  858. May we encourage them to put their faith in you and be obedient to you.

  859. We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
