  1. Good morning, everyone. Happy New Year.

  2. Those of you who, like Sonny, came up to me this morning asking for red pockets.

  3. ! I grew up in England, so very westernized, so please do not come to me.

  4. My kids, however, grew up in Hong Kong, so you can give them all the red pockets that you want to.

  5. We're going to actually have the ladies pass the Bibles around.

  6. Just put up your hand if you would like one.

  7. If you don't want one, you still need to take one.

  8. So it is the only way to be saved.

  9. We had a great baptism this morning. It was really good.

  10. I'm not going to lie. Someone asked, were they properly dunked?

  11. They were well and truly dunked.

  12. In fact, I think I either overestimated my own strength or underestimated my weakness.

  13. I think we may have dropped Jasper into the ocean first, and then we had to pick him back up afterwards.

  14. So he got well and truly dunked. All the sin was removed. It was good.

  15. I want to invite the three of them up in a bit to do the scripture reading for us, actually.

  16. So I'll just give you a warning now. Acts chapter 19, if you want to do it.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  17. But before then, this week has been a fun week, right?

  18. You've been going to all these family gatherings.

  19. You've been celebrating with people who actually, I'm guessing, many who do not know Christ yet.

  20. And Gabe, last week, shared how Christ really confronts some of these things within our Chinese culture.

  21. He gave us the three Fs. Does anyone remember what they were?

  22. Does anyone remember?

  23. This proves to me that, as I always knew anyway, that people don't really remember what we teach.

  24. Oh, oh, there we go. Sunny. Family is one.

  25. The Chinese culture just values family so much.

  26. And it's not necessarily a bad thing.

  27. But yet, actually, when it becomes an idol, when it becomes your God, when it becomes the only thing, that's when the problem is.

  28. Brayden, you put your hand up. Are you going to give us another one?

  29. Brayden?

  30. Huh?

  31. Fortune.

  32. It's all about money.

  33. It's all about wanting more and more blessings onto us.

  34. And then the final F. Does anyone remember?

  35. It was actually fears.

  36. But actually, your one is probably, I think, the most important.

  37. I think, actually, so fears is the one that he talked about.

  38. How we are actually all afraid of something.

  39. And I've joked many times before how the Chinese culture always uses fear as the thing to drive any kind of behavior.

  40. I mean, it's part of the honor-shame culture that we're in as well.

  41. And what we're most afraid of, maybe, face.

  42. How we perceive to other people.

  43. Andy, you prayed earlier this morning.

  44. And that was the thing that was in my heart.

  45. I said, wow, we are really afraid of how the people around us perceive us.

  46. How they actually look at us, especially our families.

  47. And many of us dread going to these family gatherings.

  48. And we get asked those same questions.

  49. What do you do?

  50. Have you moved on to the next life stage yet?

  51. It's all about faith.

  52. It's all about fears.

  53. It's all about fortune.

  54. It's all about family.

  55. When Christianity comes into a culture, what it does is it confronts the idols of that culture.

  56. And it doesn't force that culture to conform to a perceived Western religion kind of stereotype.

  57. We were with my family all the way in Yulong.

  58. No word of English spoken in our family gatherings.

  59. But they would often say, oh, it's really good that you guys do that.

  60. But we didn't grow up in the West.

  61. And it's a white man's religion.

  62. It's a Western religion.

  63. But if you look around the world, and that's why I'm particularly encouraged every time I gather,

  64. is on a Sunday morning, around the world, every country, every culture, every race,

  65. there are people who are worshipping.

  66. You look at the book of Revelation, towards the end in Revelation 7,

  67. where every tribe and tongue and every language is worshipping.

  68. This is not just a Western religion that speaks English.

  69. This is way more than that.

  70. This transcends culture.

  71. But the problem is, sometimes when Christianity comes into our culture,

  72. we don't actually let it confront every part of the culture.

  73. What we do instead is we hold on to some of the parts of the culture that we have found very comforting.

  74. Family, fortunes, face.

  75. And then we say, Christ, can you move in as well?

  76. But not fully.

  77. Just only to the surface level, because I still need to keep these other ones.

  78. And yet Christianity has never just let us stay in that space.

  79. In fact, Jesus, if we invite him into our hearts, he goes into every single room.

  80. He goes into every single part of our culture and goes,

  81. which of this is of me?

  82. Family is of me.

  83. I was the OG.

  84. But which is actually not?

  85. What have you turned a good thing into, and now has turned into God itself?

  86. It's really what Christianity is doing.

  87. And we're going to keep going back into the book of Acts now.

  88. And Acts chapter 19 is where we're going to go.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  89. But just to recap at the end, Acts 17 is where Gabe finished last week with us.

  90. When the gospel is preached, actually a few different responses happened.

  91. And this was back then.

  92. So this is greatly encouraging for me.

  93. So even in a room like this, I know there will be people who fall into these three separate categories.

  94. One is you believe.

  95. You're like, I'm agreeing.

  96. I'm nodding.

  97. I'm amening.

  98. And there's another group which is like, tell me more.

  99. I'm not quite sure.

  100. Well, I kind of understand, but I kind of don't.

  101. But I would like to find out more.

  102. And then there's the third group just mocks and just says, well, this is stupid.

  103. Why would you believe that?

  104. This doesn't make sense.

  105. But then to those, I would ask, well, what do you believe?

  106. Do you believe that billions of years ago, we came from nothing and we'll go back to nothing?

  107. And that's it.

  108. Or you believe in yourself?

  109. Or you believe in your career?

  110. Or you believe in your achievements?

  111. Or you believe in what you can attain in this life, in this world?

  112. Is that what you believe?

  113. Is that how you get true contentment?

  114. And how's that working for you?

  115. And I'm not asking in a sarcastic, condescending, petty kind of way.

  116. I'm just genuinely asking, how is that working for you?

  117. As you look at society out there and you look at all the things people are pursuing out there,

  118. do we see people who are genuinely free?

  119. People who declare and proclaim to be free, that they can do what they want.

  120. Do they actually feel free to you?

  121. When actually the things that we say we are in control of, so often, so often, so quickly, they turn around and end up controlling us.

  122. Because the moment we lose them, our lives, our worlds just come crashing down.

  123. And yet what we believe, what we hang our hats on, is that 2,000 years ago, someone came, the Son of God came.

  124. He died and then he rose again.

  125. And there has been no evidence to refute that.

  126. And that fact changed everything.

  127. The fact that we're in 2026 is because we're counting since that man lived.

  128. There's got to be something to this.

  129. And I want to ask you whether you are in the mock camp or whether you're in the believe camp or whether you're in the just inquiring camp.

  130. To just be willing.

  131. To be willing to open your heart and go, well, what if there was something true about this?

  132. What if there was something to this that is worth looking into?

  133. Now, do we have all the answers?

  134. Absolutely no.

  135. In fact, many of us who are following and believing now, we actually still have a lot of these questions.

  136. And yet, I'll be honest with you, I'll be frank with you.

  137. The alternative is quite dire.

  138. The alternative is quite bleak.

  139. So I'd encourage you, if you're just on that fence and you're just wondering, or you're actually, you're quite defiant and you say, no, I don't believe this kind of stuff.

  140. Well, why don't you just give it a chance?

  141. And actually, test.

  142. And see.

  143. And my hope is that as you step into a place like this, filled with these people here who are hungry, that actually, you go, oh, there is something to this.

  144. Christianity confronts the culture that we're in.

  145. Exposes the idols that we're often holding on to.

  146. And it shows us a better way.

  147. And we see that now as we move into Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  148. And we're just going to invite them up.

  149. Janice, Moses, Jasper, would you mind coming up?

  150. Let me embarrass you for a little bit and have you do the scripture reading for us.

  151. Is that okay?

  152. Can we give them a round of applause?

  153. I can tell you the water was cold.

  154. The water was cold.

  155. So I'm looking forward to the next one, which will be in the summer, where we will have some warm water to go into.

  156. All right.

  157. Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  158. What should we do?

  159. Why don't you do this?

  160. Yeah.

  161. Yeah.

  162. Moses, you do this.

  163. Acts 19 verse 1 to 10.

    Acts 19:1–10

  164. Janice, then you do 11 to 20.

  165. And then Jasper, you do 21 to 27.

  166. Is that good?

  167. Can I invite you to stand for the word of the Lord?

  168. And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus.

  169. There he found some disciples.

  170. And he said to them, did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?

  171. And they said, no, we have not heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

  172. And he said, into what then were you baptized?

  173. They said, into John's baptism.

  174. And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling people to believe in the one who was to come after him.

  175. That is Jesus.

  176. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of Lord Jesus.

  177. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

  178. There were about 12 men in all.

  179. And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.

  180. But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took disciples with him.

  181. Reasoning daily, the hall of tyrannous, this continued for two years so that all residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

  182. And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick and their diseases left them.

  183. And the evil spirits came out of them.

  184. Then some of the in itinerants, Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying,

  185. I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.

  186. Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.

  187. But the evil spirit answered, then Jesus, them, Jesus, I know, and Paul, I recognize.

  188. But who are you?

  189. And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

  190. And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks.

  191. And fear fell upon them all.

  192. And the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.

  193. Also, many of those who were now believers came professing and divulging their practices.

  194. And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burdened them in the sight of all.

  195. And they counted the value of them and found it came to 50,000 pieces of silver.

  196. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.

  197. Now, after these events, Paul resolved in the spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem saying,

  198. After I've been here, I must also see Rome.

  199. And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Eurystice, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

  200. About that time, there arose no little disturbance concerning the way.

  201. For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen.

  202. These he gathered together with the workmen in similar trades and said,

  203. Men, you know that from this business, we have our wealth.

  204. And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people,

  205. saying that gods made with hands are not gods.

  206. And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute,

  207. but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing,

  208. and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence.

  209. She whom all Asia and the world worship.

  210. This is the word of the Lord.

  211. Thank you, Jasper, Moses, and Janice.

  212. Thank you very much.

  213. Hopefully you were able to follow along.

  214. Acts chapter 19, if you've got your Bible, do follow along.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  215. I'm going to be going through this at a fairly quick speed.

  216. But the premise is this.

  217. Jesus is Lord of all or not at all.

  218. Jesus is Lord of all or not at all.

  219. You see when Christianity goes into the city of Ephesus,

  220. which is actually a very important city back in the ancient world,

  221. just like Antioch, just like Rome, just like Alexandria,

  222. this was a place that actually was a hub for sea and land transportation.

  223. It was a capital business center.

  224. This was an important city.

  225. This was an important city.

  226. And then Paul goes into this city, and then he brings the gospel.

  227. And what's really interesting here is that he meets 12 guys.

  228. He meets 12 guys, and this is the start of the church in Ephesus.

  229. So this is how it begins.

  230. And again, I can just imagine Paul walking into this city,

  231. overwhelmed, just like he was in Athens,

  232. just deeply provoked, distressed about the idols that were going on here.

  233. And he meets 12 guys, and he has this fascinating interaction

  234. that actually theologians and scholars to this day

  235. are still debating what it truly means here.

  236. So he meets these 12 guys who say they've been baptized,

  237. but then they don't truly understand the gospel,

  238. which is interesting because I wonder whether actually

  239. if Paul walked into here and he would ask us,

  240. do you truly understand what the gospel is?

  241. I wonder how many of us would truly be able to articulate to him

  242. and tell him what the gospel is.

  243. They say something interesting here.

  244. And his question is, did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?

  245. And they said, no, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

  246. And then John says, well, until what then were you baptized?

  247. They said, into John's baptism.

  248. And then Paul explains to them, John's baptism was one of repentance.

  249. So basically what that is, is if you look back into the book of John,

  250. in chapter one, John the Baptist is calling people into repentance.

  251. He's saying, hey, turn away from your life of sin.

  252. What you're doing is damaging how you're living

  253. and it will end up in death.

  254. Turn around, repent is what the word repents means.

  255. Turn around and go the other way.

  256. And so then these people would be baptized,

  257. basically filled with guilt and shame

  258. of what they'd done in their lives.

  259. And they're saying, okay, fine.

  260. I want to turn away from that.

  261. But what they didn't understand

  262. and what Paul was trying to get out here was,

  263. hey, do you know who the Holy Spirit is?

  264. Or do you even know who Jesus is?

  265. What they had gotten was this feeling of guilt and shame,

  266. baptized into repentance saying,

  267. I don't want to live that life anymore.

  268. But they didn't really know where to go.

  269. They knew they had to turn around from this,

  270. but they didn't know that they had to go this way.

  271. So instead of just turning around and then following Jesus,

  272. they turned around and then were kind of just stuck in this place there.

  273. And so John goes, hey, do you know that you need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit?

  274. Now, this is a rare occurrence here.

  275. Because now if you're here having been baptized,

  276. you actually don't need to doubt on the most part

  277. that you haven't been baptized with the Holy Spirit.

  278. Our life group was talking about this only a couple of weeks ago.

  279. There are two baptisms.

  280. One is of water and one is of spirit.

  281. And often they actually happen at the same time.

  282. So when you get,

  283. actually the moment you decide to follow Christ,

  284. that is proof in itself that the Holy Spirit is inside you.

  285. So you don't have to worry.

  286. If you are a follower of Jesus,

  287. if you are a believer of Jesus,

  288. you don't have to worry.

  289. Wait, actually, do I have the Holy Spirit inside me?

  290. Have I been baptized by the Spirit?

  291. You don't have to worry about that

  292. because Paul actually explains more in 1 Corinthians 12.

  293. He says, actually, the fact that you can say Jesus is Lord,

  294. the fact that you can utter those three words

  295. proves that the Holy Spirit is inside you.

  296. The fact that you're aware of your sin,

  297. that you're aware of what righteousness is,

  298. John chapter 16, verse 8,

    John 16:8

  299. is what is the Holy Spirit revealing that to you.

  300. But what he's talking to these guys about,

  301. this very specific group about is,

  302. hey, I think you don't really understand the gift of grace.

  303. I don't think you really understand.

  304. You know that you have to turn away from this life,

  305. but actually you don't know who you're following.

  306. You just know that you shouldn't be there.

  307. And so he says, actually,

  308. what you do need to do is follow.

  309. And he says this is verse four,

  310. John baptized with the baptism of repentance,

  311. telling the people to believe in the one

  312. who was to come after him, that is Jesus.

  313. And then verse five, on hearing this,

  314. they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  315. So what he's saying there is,

  316. okay, you understood the first part,

  317. but maybe you missed the part where John says,

  318. hey, I can only baptize with water,

  319. but there's one coming after me

  320. who is going to baptize in the spirit

  321. and you have to follow him.

  322. So he's saying, you must know about Jesus.

  323. You have to know about Jesus

  324. because actually not only do you need to repent of your sins,

  325. you then need to know where you get forgiveness from.

  326. It's not free.

  327. It's free for you, but because someone paid a price.

  328. And so you need to understand that

  329. because if you don't understand that,

  330. you don't understand grace.

  331. You need to understand that actually you're forgiven.

  332. You're not dead anymore,

  333. but you're alive because someone died for you.

  334. And now that person lives.

  335. It's this concept of grace.

  336. Sometimes I wonder,

  337. actually I'm worried when I walk into a church setting,

  338. I wonder how many of us here truly grasp the concept of grace,

  339. that the Holy Spirit lives inside us,

  340. that Jesus sacrificed his life for us,

  341. but now he lives inside us.

  342. To understand that actually we don't deserve to be here.

  343. We are far worse than we imagined,

  344. but far more loved than we ever dare dream,

  345. is what Tim Keller says.

  346. And that's what Paul is trying to confront here.

  347. And the moment he talks to them about that,

  348. boom, they receive the Holy Spirit.

  349. And then they start speaking in tongues.

  350. Remember, this group has never heard of the Holy Spirit before.

  351. Now, it doesn't really matter

  352. which realm of Christianity you're from.

  353. One that we all have to agree on

  354. is the Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead.

  355. It is part of the Trinity.

  356. But I know, as we joke,

  357. there are some churches that don't.

  358. They have the Holy Father, Holy Son,

  359. and then they have the Holy Bible,

  360. and they replaced the Holy Spirit.

  361. But the truth is,

  362. the Holy Spirit is so alive and well and active.

  363. This whole book is inspired by him.

  364. All the events of Acts are done by him.

  365. But it gets controversial

  366. because what happens here

  367. and what we see here

  368. is that the moment he prays for them

  369. and when he laid hands on them,

  370. the Holy Spirit came on them

  371. and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

  372. And this is the part that divides the church

  373. because they're like,

  374. wait, does the Holy Spirit still do that?

  375. Or was it only in this time?

  376. And actually, let me tell you one thing.

  377. This isn't the key theme.

  378. This isn't the main reason why Luke writes this here.

  379. The focus of the book of Luke and Acts

  380. is not to talk about tongues.

  381. And yet actually,

  382. just because we are who we are,

  383. we are humans,

  384. we sometimes chase after those extraordinary things.

  385. Some people downplay them.

  386. Some people discourage them.

  387. Some people dismiss them.

  388. Some people try to duplicate them.

  389. But I want to say,

  390. that's not the topic of today's message,

  391. but the point is,

  392. we just hunger for God.

  393. We just ask him to come.

  394. And actually,

  395. whatever experiences come our way,

  396. whatever he decides to give to us,

  397. he gives to us.

  398. We just have to approach with humility.

  399. We just have to approach with openness.

  400. And so,

  401. what happens then is,

  402. they receive,

  403. and then he moves on,

  404. and then he starts teaching.

  405. But again,

  406. some people don't like it.

  407. Maybe some of you don't like my teaching here.

  408. And so,

  409. some people don't like it,

  410. and so he has to move to another place to keep teaching.

  411. And he ends up teaching there for two years,

  412. which is actually the longest place that he's been in.

  413. And so you see,

  414. Ephesus is built on that foundation.

  415. And then,

  416. something really funny happens.

  417. As he's teaching,

  418. what happens is that he starts doing miracles.

  419. And you see here,

  420. verse 11,

  421. and God was,

  422. actually,

  423. let me just re-correct myself.

  424. Because I just said,

  425. Paul did miracles,

  426. but that's not the case.

  427. That's not what scripture says.

  428. Scripture says,

  429. and God was doing extraordinary miracles

  430. by the hands of Paul.

  431. So the point where even his handkerchief

  432. was filled with power.

  433. Can you imagine the hype that was building

  434. around that time?

  435. Well,

  436. actually,

  437. you may have been a part of the church circles,

  438. but definitely you will know someone who's ill,

  439. and who's unwell,

  440. and who's sick.

  441. And then you start hearing something.

  442. Hey,

  443. have you heard about that guy

  444. who's hanging out in the hall of Tyranus?

  445. He can heal people.

  446. Hey,

  447. you've had that eczema for a very long time.

  448. You should go.

  449. You should go touch him.

  450. And maybe not him,

  451. just touch a part of him.

  452. Or maybe even just a cloth or a towel.

  453. Maybe that power will be the thing that heals you.

  454. Hey,

  455. what about that cancer?

  456. Why don't we,

  457. why don't we take them?

  458. Can you imagine the hype of that

  459. that was starting to build?

  460. People were starting to hear about the miracles

  461. that were happening,

  462. and they couldn't,

  463. they couldn't resist going to find out,

  464. can this person really heal?

  465. And it's of that time

  466. where there's another group of people

  467. who were in the similar kind of work,

  468. and they were there,

  469. thank you,

  470. Janice,

  471. for trying to read that,

  472. itinerant Jewish exorcists.

  473. Let's just,

  474. because it's a mouthful,

  475. let's just call them the Ghostbusters.

  476. Okay?

  477. So these were a group of guys

  478. that would go around

  479. invoking all the names

  480. of all the different gods

  481. to try and heal people.

  482. And guess what?

  483. It worked.

  484. Why?

  485. Because the world we live in

  486. is a supernatural world.

  487. There is a spirit realm

  488. that we cannot see.

  489. Whether you're a follower of Christ,

  490. a believer in God or not,

  491. you will,

  492. you'll have to acknowledge and admit

  493. there's something beyond

  494. what we can see here.

  495. You have to,

  496. because there's oxygen in this room

  497. and you can't see it.

  498. And we all know there's oxygen in this room.

  499. But beyond that,

  500. there's also a spiritual realm.

  501. And of course,

  502. the enemy is a work,

  503. and the enemy is actually powerful.

  504. So therefore,

  505. these Ghostbusters

  506. were actually invoking

  507. all the different names

  508. and actually causing healings to happen.

  509. And so what do they do?

  510. They hear about this Paul,

  511. and they hear about this name Jesus,

  512. and they say,

  513. well, why don't we add him

  514. to our catalog?

  515. Maybe Jesus is the most powerful Pokemon

  516. we can invoke.

  517. Let's go and catch him,

  518. and then let's use him,

  519. is what they're doing.

  520. If you think back in Acts 17,

  521. when Paul walks through Athens,

  522. he sees this shrine

  523. for an unknown God.

  524. Why is that unknown God there?

  525. It's because they worshiped

  526. so many gods,

  527. but they were very worried

  528. that they would offend

  529. and miss out some gods.

  530. So they would just put one,

  531. there's all these gods,

  532. fertility,

  533. wealth,

  534. and prosperity,

  535. but there's one God

  536. called the God unknown God.

  537. Why?

  538. Just in case.

  539. Just in case,

  540. because what we do not want to do,

  541. we do not want to offend

  542. the God that we did not name.

  543. So let's just call it

  544. the unknown God.

  545. It's really ironic

  546. because they create these gods,

  547. they try to worship these gods,

  548. but what they're actually

  549. really trying to do

  550. is control these gods.

  551. Can you imagine a God

  552. that you control

  553. that will bless you

  554. with fertility,

  555. prosperity,

  556. and all these things?

  557. What kind of God is that?

  558. And so what they're trying

  559. to do here is

  560. they hear about this Jesus.

  561. So they said,

  562. this name of Jesus

  563. sounds powerful.

  564. So let's try it.

  565. So the sons of Sceva,

  566. seven sons of a Jewish

  567. high priest named Sceva

  568. were doing this,

  569. but the evil spirit

  570. answered them,

  571. Jesus I know,

  572. and Paul I recognize,

  573. but who are you?

  574. I mean,

  575. that would have just been

  576. a terrifying encounter

  577. to have.

  578. And then,

  579. and the man in whom

  580. was the evil spirit

  581. leaped on them,

  582. mastered all of them,

  583. and overpowered them

  584. so that they fled out

  585. of that house

  586. naked and wounded.

  587. I don't know if you've ever

  588. been in a fight before,

  589. but if you enter into a fight

  590. and you come out naked,

  591. it didn't win well for you.

  592. It was,

  593. it was not a good experience.

  594. And so it would have been

  595. a hilarious scene

  596. to these seven guys

  597. try to invoke

  598. and conjure up

  599. the name of Jesus,

  600. end up in a fist fight

  601. with one person

  602. and they all walk out

  603. of there naked.

  604. Fascinatingly,

  605. and this became known

  606. to all the residents

  607. that these seven guys

  608. got into a fight

  609. and lost their underwear

  610. and they walked out.

  611. Well, at least the imagery

  612. that I have,

  613. they were completely naked

  614. and wounded.

  615. And you would have thought

  616. people would be terrified

  617. and in some ways they were,

  618. but then response

  619. is actually quite a natural one.

  620. And fear fell upon them all

  621. and the name of the Lord Jesus

  622. was extolled.

  623. It means worshipped

  624. and held in high regard

  625. and honoured.

  626. So because of that incident,

  627. people were like,

  628. did you see that?

  629. Did you see that

  630. those seven guys

  631. just get beat up?

  632. Those seven ghostbusters

  633. get beat up by that ghost?

  634. Maybe Jesus is the only one.

  635. But just a word

  636. about those seven guys.

  637. I wonder whether you and I

  638. are sometimes those seven guys

  639. where we try and conjure up

  640. the name of Jesus

  641. and the power of Jesus

  642. so we can get the blessings

  643. from Jesus,

  644. but we don't actually

  645. know Jesus at all.

  646. Imagine

  647. if we,

  648. in our pursuits

  649. for the things of this world,

  650. and we keep going to God

  651. and asking for these things

  652. and actually God says,

  653. I don't actually know you.

  654. How dangerous is that?

  655. Do we sometimes do that?

  656. What are these guys doing?

  657. What are these ghostbusters

  658. even trying to do?

  659. They're trying to make money.

  660. They're trying to gain a name

  661. for themselves.

  662. If you strip it down,

  663. isn't that what we're trying to do

  664. half the time?

  665. Trying to invoke the name of Jesus

  666. without the relationship of Jesus.

  667. I'm reminded of

  668. the book of Mark.

  669. There's this scene

  670. in Mark chapter nine,

  671. the transfiguration.

  672. Jesus takes his three guys

  673. up into a mountain

  674. and they see

  675. this just incredible scene.

  676. Elijah and Moses show up

  677. and Peter's like,

  678. let's stay here forever,

  679. but they can't.

  680. So they have to go back

  681. down the mountain.

  682. And when they go down

  683. the mountain,

  684. there is chaos.

  685. There is absolute chaos.

  686. Why?

  687. Because there's this boy

  688. with an evil spirit inside them.

  689. And the other disciples,

  690. the ones who were left behind

  691. and all the other followers

  692. of Jesus were trying

  693. to cast out this demon,

  694. but they couldn't do it.

  695. This boy kept getting seizures.

  696. And then Jesus stops them

  697. when he comes

  698. and of course he casts out.

  699. And then he says this,

  700. what does he say?

  701. He says,

  702. this kind can only be

  703. cast out by prayer.

  704. What does he mean?

  705. He says,

  706. this kind of,

  707. you can only exercise

  708. any kind of power

  709. on behalf of me

  710. if you actually know me,

  711. if you have a connection

  712. with me,

  713. if you're able to speak

  714. to me yourself.

  715. If you and I have a connection,

  716. that's when you have the power.

  717. You can't invoke my name

  718. and not know me at all.

  719. You can't invoke my name

  720. for selfish gain.

  721. My name is that powerful,

  722. but only in connection

  723. and in relationship with you.

  724. I wonder whether

  725. when we go into our pursuits,

  726. you know,

  727. this all sounds quite extreme.

  728. It sounds like demons

  729. and it sounds like exorcists,

  730. but often we approach life

  731. in a very similar way.

  732. Jesus,

  733. can you give me that job?

  734. Jesus,

  735. can you give me that girl?

  736. Jesus,

  737. can you give me what I want?

  738. And Jesus is like,

  739. but you don't actually

  740. want connection with me.

  741. Relationship with me

  742. is the most important thing.

  743. Even when the crazy things happen

  744. that we do for God,

  745. it happened with the disciples.

  746. They went out

  747. and they actually ended up

  748. casting out demons.

  749. They ended up doing

  750. all these miracles

  751. and they go back to Jesus

  752. and they're so excited.

  753. They're so hyped up.

  754. They said,

  755. do you know what we did?

  756. We did this.

  757. We healed that person.

  758. And then Jesus says,

  759. don't rejoice

  760. because you could do those things.

  761. Rejoice that your names

  762. are written

  763. in heaven,

  764. in my heart,

  765. that you have a connection

  766. with me.

  767. That's what he's trying

  768. to confront here.

  769. That is,

  770. in some ways,

  771. the irony

  772. that they tried to do this.

  773. It didn't work.

  774. They left the fight naked,

  775. but yet the name of Jesus

  776. was extolled.

  777. And something,

  778. again,

  779. this story just keeps going.

  780. And verse 18,

  781. and also many of those

  782. who are now believers

  783. came confessing

  784. and divulging their practices.

  785. And a number of those books,

  786. those who had practiced magic arts,

  787. brought their books together

  788. and burned them

  789. in the sight of all.

  790. So the other people,

  791. not the seven sons,

  792. they look and they see,

  793. okay,

  794. there's something special

  795. about this Jesus.

  796. We should follow him

  797. and only him.

  798. No one else.

  799. So they come

  800. and they bring all their books

  801. and they burn all their books

  802. and they say,

  803. we're not going to follow

  804. these other gods.

  805. We're not going to try

  806. and invoke

  807. all these other names.

  808. We're only going to go

  809. with the name of Jesus.

  810. We have found the one,

  811. the only one.

  812. And they go and burn

  813. all their books.

  814. And it says here,

  815. they burn all their books

  816. and they counted the value

  817. of them and found it

  818. and came to 50,000 pieces

  819. of silver.

  820. In modern day terms,

  821. that's 35,000 US dollars

  822. worth of books.

  823. Textbooks of the defense

  824. against the dark arts.

  825. They threw them all.

  826. They burned them all.

  827. That's a lot of money.

  828. Of course,

  829. I don't know if you have

  830. a book like that

  831. at home on your shelf,

  832. but maybe you do have

  833. some books on self-help.

  834. Maybe you do have

  835. different books

  836. that you have read,

  837. investment gurus

  838. to help you make money quick.

  839. Maybe there are other things

  840. that you are relying on.

  841. Maybe there are

  842. Instagram accounts

  843. that you are following,

  844. thinking,

  845. okay,

  846. I will follow Jesus,

  847. but I also need

  848. this guy's help.

  849. I do believe

  850. that Jesus provides for me,

  851. but I better go

  852. and do this

  853. in order,

  854. otherwise I won't get

  855. what I need.

  856. And yet these people,

  857. the beginning of this church

  858. happened

  859. at a bonfire

  860. where they each came

  861. and took all the books

  862. that they'd relied on

  863. and they burned them.

  864. And the value

  865. of them,

  866. 35,000 US dollars

  867. worth of books

  868. and magical things

  869. because they saw

  870. the power of Jesus.

  871. Jesus is either

  872. Lord of all

  873. or not

  874. at all.

  875. Imagine that kind

  876. of community.

  877. Imagine if you and I

  878. all came here

  879. and had to sacrifice

  880. an incredible amount

  881. to be here.

  882. Because if I'm honest

  883. with you,

  884. we didn't have to sacrifice

  885. that much to sit here.

  886. There is no danger

  887. that we're in

  888. other than the danger

  889. of falling asleep.

  890. There is no danger

  891. imminent here.

  892. There are no authorities

  893. outside.

  894. This did not cost us

  895. anything

  896. unless you came from

  897. Kowloon

  898. and you had to pay

  899. for the harbor

  900. transport.

  901. Yeah,

  902. it's a real thing.

  903. It's a very real thing.

  904. But when there's no cost

  905. that we've paid,

  906. I wonder how much

  907. it's worth to us.

  908. When there's no cost

  909. that we've paid

  910. to follow Jesus,

  911. I wonder how much

  912. Jesus is actually

  913. worth to us.

  914. What's your

  915. magic

  916. that you've been

  917. relying on?

  918. What's the thing

  919. that you've been

  920. holding on to?

  921. What's the thing

  922. where you say,

  923. Jesus,

  924. you can be Lord

  925. but only of these parts

  926. because I have to

  927. look after these parts?

  928. I don't think

  929. that's how this church

  930. was started.

  931. Do we hold on

  932. to those things?

  933. And this happens

  934. the most during

  935. Chinese New Year,

  936. I think.

  937. It's exposed

  938. when we sit

  939. around the table

  940. with our friends

  941. and family

  942. and the question

  943. that I asked myself

  944. was,

  945. how am I going

  946. to do this?

  947. How am I going

  948. to bring up

  949. my faith

  950. to my family members?

  951. How am I going

  952. to be different

  953. to them?

  954. Not just for

  955. different sake,

  956. but if I really

  957. believe what I

  958. truly believe,

  959. that actually

  960. this is the path

  961. that leads to life

  962. and this is the path

  963. that leads to death,

  964. how do I share

  965. with them that?

  966. How do I tell

  967. them that?

  968. How did you do it?

  969. Do we pray

  970. for our families

  971. that they would

  972. overcome the idols

  973. of family,

  974. fortune,

  975. face,

  976. and fears?

  977. Do we pray

  978. for ourselves

  979. that we can be

  980. a light when we

  981. head into those

  982. spaces?

  983. Not to judge

  984. those spaces.

  985. Remember,

  986. the gospel is

  987. that we are also

  988. in that space

  989. but then God

  990. came to find us.

  991. He came to save

  992. us.

  993. He came to preach

  994. peace to us.

  995. Do we recognize

  996. our need for a

  997. savior and do we

  998. recognize their need

  999. for a savior?

  1000. Christianity continues

  1001. to grow and continues

  1002. to confront culture.

  1003. So after that

  1004. happens,

  1005. the word of the

  1006. Lord continued to

  1007. increase and prevail

  1008. mightily.

  1009. Verse 21,

  1010. now after these

  1011. events,

  1012. Paul resolved in

  1013. the spirit to

  1014. pass through

  1015. Macedonia and

  1016. Achaia and go to

  1017. Jerusalem and then

  1018. afterwards he must

  1019. go to Rome.

  1020. Why?

  1021. Because every city

  1022. he goes to,

  1023. he sees the

  1024. fingerprints of Rome.

  1025. He sees that

  1026. Rome is the place

  1027. that you have to

  1028. hit.

  1029. This is why I

  1030. think you are

  1031. in Hong Kong.

  1032. And this is why

1033. I am in Hong Kong.

  1034. Because when you

  1035. reach a city,

  1036. you can reach a

  1037. culture.

  1038. When Jesus says,

  1039. go and make

  1040. disciples of all

  1041. nations,

  1042. well how good

  1043. and how beautiful

  1044. is it that all

  1045. the nations gather

  1046. into the cities?

  1047. And it's when you

  1048. can move the city,

  1049. that's when you

  1050. can move the

  1051. culture.

  1052. And everything

  1053. that we need to

  1054. reach the city

  1055. is in the city

  1056. so long as we

  1057. are open to it,

  1058. so long as we

  1059. are obedient to it.

  1060. And that's why

  1061. Paul is saying,

  1062. I must go to

  1063. Rome.

  1064. I must tackle,

  1065. Christianity must

  1066. confront the head

  1067. of this beast.

  1068. And so he said,

  1069. that's exactly what

  1070. he says there.

  1071. But afterwards,

  1072. in Ephesus,

  1073. something else

  1074. happens.

  1075. There's a guy

  1076. called Demetrius,

  1077. wealthy man,

  1078. businessman,

  1079. okay?

  1080. Silversmith,

  1081. who made silver

  1082. shrines of Artemis.

  1083. Now Artemis is the

  1084. god of Ephesus,

  1085. is the local god

  1086. of Ephesus,

  1087. and she had this

  1088. incredible temple,

  1089. four times the size

  1090. of the Parthenon,

  1091. bigger than a

  1092. football field.

  1093. People would use it

1094. as a bank and store

  1095. their riches in this

  1096. temple.

  1097. It was the centerpiece

  1098. of the whole city

  1099. of Ephesus.

  1100. And so this guy

  1101. makes his living,

  1102. got rich by building

  1103. little statues of

  1104. Artemis,

  1105. and saying,

  1106. hey,

  1107. we're going to sell

  1108. these,

  1109. and everyone put

  1110. them in their

  1111. houses,

  1112. and he would make

  1113. a lot of money

  1114. for them.

  1115. Of course,

  1116. when Paul comes,

  1117. and even his

  1118. handkerchief has

  1119. more power than

  1120. these seven

  1121. Ghostbusters,

  1122. suddenly people

  1123. start buying those

  1124. statues,

  1125. and they start just

  1126. following Jesus.

  1127. And that gets

  1128. Demetrius upset.

  1129. He actually riles up

  1130. a whole group.

  1131. These he gathered

  1132. together with the

  1133. workmen in similar

  1134. trades,

  1135. and he says,

  1136. men,

  1137. you know that from

  1138. this business we

  1139. have our wealth.

1140. We got rich by this.

  1141. This is our livelihood.

  1142. I am a third

  1143. generation silversmith

  1144. because of this.

  1145. We need this to

  1146. survive.

  1147. Yet Paul,

  1148. yet Jesus,

  1149. is ruining that,

1150. and you see in here

  1151. that not only in

  1152. Ephesus,

  1153. but in almost all

  1154. of Asia,

  1155. this Paul,

  1156. one guy,

  1157. God uses as the

  1158. chosen instrument

  1159. to spread throughout

  1160. all of Asia,

  1161. the good news of

  1162. Jesus.

  1163. But in almost all

  1164. of Asia,

  1165. this Paul has

  1166. persuaded and

  1167. turned away a

  1168. great many people

  1169. saying that God's

  1170. made with hands

  1171. are not God's.

  1172. Just freeze there

  1173. for a second,

  1174. just that line,

  1175. that God's made

  1176. with hands are not

  1177. God's.

  1178. Well,

  1179. well,

  1180. obviously.

  1181. When we're

  1182. talking about the

  1183. Holy Spirit,

  1184. when we're

  1185. talking about

  1186. God Almighty,

  1187. and then when

  1188. we're trying to

  1189. reduce him to a

  1190. little statue that

  1191. we can make with

  1192. our own hands,

  1193. or with our own

  1194. little minds,

  1195. we can understand

  1196. what's happening.

  1197. I think that's

  1198. where we go wrong.

  1199. So even when we're

  1200. talking about things

  1201. of the spiritual

  1202. realm,

  1203. like tongues,

  1204. like prophecy,

  1205. sometimes I just

  1206. approach all of

  1207. this with humility

  1208. going,

1209. this is what I can

  1210. see in the Bible.

1211. This is what I can

  1212. see sometimes in

  1213. experiences out there,

  1214. but I don't fully

  1215. know,

  1216. and anyone who says

  1217. they fully,

  1218. truly know,

  1219. I don't know if

  1220. we should believe

  1221. them.

  1222. Because we're

  1223. dealing with this

  1224. God that is so

  1225. much bigger than

  1226. us.

  1227. And I've shared

  1228. this example before,

  1229. if you've been to

  1230. my house,

  1231. you will meet an

  1232. incredibly vicious,

  1233. intimidating canine

  1234. called Walter.

  1235. Okay?

  1236. He's about this

  1237. size.

  1238. He's a toy poodle.

  1239. Never did I ever

  1240. dream that I would

1241. grow up and own a

  1242. toy poodle,

1243. but it is what it

  1244. is.

  1245. It is Hong Kong.

  1246. Imagine when we

  1247. left the house

  1248. this morning,

  1249. and Walter

  1250. then tries to

  1251. explain to some

  1252. of his other

  1253. canine friends as

  1254. he's outside

  1255. going for a

  1256. poop,

  1257. guys,

  1258. I've got the

  1259. humans down.

  1260. I know exactly

  1261. what they do.

  1262. I know exactly

  1263. how they're feeling.

  1264. I know their

  1265. culture.

  1266. I know the way

  1267. they think.

  1268. I know what

  1269. universities are.

  1270. Like,

  1271. no,

  1272. because he's a

  1273. dog.

  1274. He doesn't

  1275. understand.

  1276. Like,

  1277. if him and

  1278. his dogmates

  1279. sat together

  1280. and said,

  1281. hey,

  1282. let's just share

  1283. everything we

  1284. know about

  1285. humans,

  1286. they would not

  1287. be able to

  1288. tell you much

  1289. at all.

  1290. Dogs do not

  1291. understand humans.

  1292. Why do we

  1293. humans think we

  1294. can make gods

  1295. with our own

  1296. hands?

  1297. Impossible.

  1298. And so that

  1299. line,

  1300. Demetrius,

  1301. my boy Demetrius

  1302. here,

  1303. and I hope he

  1304. reflects on this,

  1305. is the irony

  1306. in that sentence.

  1307. Do you hear

  1308. about this,

  1309. Paul?

  1310. He said the

  1311. gods that we

  1312. made with our

  1313. own hands

  1314. aren't gods

  1315. at all.

  1316. And again,

  1317. it sounds stupid,

  1318. but then we

  1319. look at our

  1320. lives.

  1321. We look at the

  1322. things that we

  1323. hold on to,

  1324. the brand names

  1325. that we pursue,

  1326. the careers that

  1327. we obsess over,

  1328. and we wonder,

  1329. should we be

  1330. surprised at all

  1331. when they don't

  1332. really satisfy

  1333. us,

  1334. when they

  1335. don't truly

  1336. deliver us?

  1337. How often are

  1338. we actually

  1339. relying on

  1340. gods that we

  1341. make with our

  1342. own hands?

  1343. And anyway,

  1344. Demetrius is

  1345. trying to cause

  1346. a riot,

  1347. and he actually

  1348. succeeds,

  1349. and he's

  1350. saying,

  1351. hey,

  1352. we're losing

  1353. money from

  1354. this.

  1355. This guy,

  1356. we need to

  1357. get rid of

  1358. this guy,

  1359. otherwise I've

  1360. got a whole

  1361. pile of

  1362. statues in the

  1363. warehouse that

  1364. won't move,

  1365. and I've got

  1366. kids to pay

  1367. for.

  1368. And then he

  1369. also takes on

  1370. a bit of a

  1371. higher noble

  1372. ground,

  1373. and he says,

  1374. and there is

  1375. danger not only

  1376. that this trade

  1377. of ours may

  1378. come into

  1379. disrepute,

  1380. but also that

  1381. the temple of

  1382. the great

  1383. goddess Artemis

  1384. may be counted

  1385. as nothing,

  1386. and that she

  1387. may even be

  1388. deposed from

  1389. her magnificence,

  1390. she whom all

  1391. Asia and the

  1392. world worship.

  1393. The temple of

  1394. Artemis is

  1395. considered one of

  1396. the seven wonders

  1397. of the world.

  1398. He's saying,

  1399. hey,

  1400. if we don't get

  1401. rid of this

  1402. Paul,

  1403. Artemis will

  1404. lose her

  1405. magnificence,

  1406. to which I

  1407. would say,

  1408. well,

  1409. why does

  1410. Artemis need

  1411. us to defend

  1412. her magnificence?

  1413. Is she that

  1414. weak that she

  1415. needs us to

  1416. build statues

  1417. for her to

  1418. sell them so

  1419. that she would

  1420. be glorified?

  1421. Now,

  1422. people did

  1423. travel from

  1424. all over the

  1425. world to

  1426. Ephesus to

  1427. worship Artemis,

  1428. who was actually

  1429. mixed in with a

  1430. Roman god called

  1431. Diana,

  1432. which would grant

  1433. fertility.

  1434. But again,

  1435. so he's basically

  1436. saying, hey,

  1437. this is about me,

  1438. but it's also about

  1439. our great city and

  1440. our great culture,

  1441. which tells me

  1442. something else.

  1443. Religion.

  1444. Here is

  1445. practiced publicly

  1446. and it is also

  1447. never neutral.

  1448. You walk into

  1449. our streets of

  1450. Hong Kong and

  1451. you will see that

  1452. there is a

  1453. religion that is

  1454. not practiced

  1455. privately.

  1456. It is out

  1457. there public.

  1458. The worship of

  1459. money is one of

  1460. the biggest ones.

  1461. And you can see

  1462. it.

  1463. You walk through

  1464. any mall,

  1465. any MTR,

  1466. and you'll see

  1467. the shrines that

  1468. are up where

  1469. it will show you

  1470. what we worship.

  1471. And it is never

  1472. done in private

  1473. and it's always

  1474. in public and

  1475. it is never

  1476. neutral.

  1477. So when we

  1478. walk through

  1479. these places,

  1480. when we walk

  1481. through these

  1482. cities,

  1483. let's not think

  1484. that this is a

  1485. neutral ground.

  1486. Let's remember

  1487. that this is

  1488. actually a

  1489. battleground.

  1490. That there are

  1491. lives, there are

  1492. souls at stake

  1493. here.

  1494. And there is

  1495. only one God

  1496. that is alive.

  1497. Jesus is either

  1498. Lord of all or

  1499. not at all.

  1500. And it just

  1501. shows you how

  1502. fickle and

  1503. stupid humans

  1504. are.

  1505. Verse 28,

  1506. and when they

  1507. heard this,

  1508. they were

  1509. enraged and

  1510. were crying

  1511. out,

  1512. great is

  1513. Artemis of

  1514. the Ephesians.

  1515. They shouted

  1516. this for two

  1517. hours.

  1518. And they

  1519. were confused.

  1520. And again,

  1521. this feels

  1522. extreme and

  1523. if we were

  1524. in that spot,

  1525. it would have

  1526. felt pretty

  1527. intense.

  1528. But if you

  1529. look around,

  1530. think about

  1531. your family

  1532. gatherings,

  1533. think about

  1534. my family

  1535. gathering,

  1536. think about

  1537. the city

  1538. that we're

  1539. in,

  1540. the culture

  1541. that we're

  1542. in.

  1543. Aren't we

  1544. really just

  1545. as confused?

  1546. Aren't we

  1547. really just

  1548. as fearful?

  1549. Aren't we

  1550. really just

  1551. as selfish?

  1552. And so

  1553. Demetrius tries

  1554. to rile up

  1555. the crowd,

  1556. basically trying

  1557. to drive

  1558. Paul out.

  1559. Now,

  1560. later,

  1561. and we won't

  1562. focus too

  1563. much on

  1564. this,

  1565. there's a

  1566. town clerk

  1567. called

  1568. Alexander who

  1569. actually comes

  1570. and calms

  1571. down the

  1572. whole setting

  1573. and says,

  1574. well,

  1575. this isn't

  1576. the way

  1577. that you

  1578. do this.

  1579. If you

  1580. want to

  1581. get rid

  1582. of him,

  1583. then do

  1584. it through

  1585. the proper

  1586. way is

  1587. basically

  1588. what he's

  1589. saying.

  1590. And so

  1591. actually,

  1592. the crowd

  1593. calms

  1594. down,

  1595. and then

  1596. they leave.

  1597. But I

  1598. think it

  1599. leaves us

  1600. with the

  1601. same question.

  1602. Is Jesus

  1603. the Lord

  1604. of all

  1605. of our

  1606. lives,

  1607. or is

  1608. he only

  1609. Lord of

  1610. parts?

  1611. Because if

  1612. he's the

  1613. Lord of

  1614. parts,

  1615. then he's

  1616. actually not

  1617. at all.

  1618. That's the

  1619. difference.

  1620. the challenge

  1621. that we

  1622. have today

  1623. is can

  1624. we fight

  1625. actively

  1626. against these

  1627. other little

  1628. gods,

  1629. these books

  1630. that we

  1631. rely on,

  1632. this trade

  1633. that we

  1634. rely on?

  1635. I want to

  1636. finish by

  1637. sharing with

  1638. you,

  1639. we just

  1640. painted a

  1641. picture of

  1642. the beginning

  1643. of Ephesus,

  1644. the church

  1645. of Ephesus,

  1646. the gathering

  1647. at Ephesus.

  1648. Paul writes

  1649. them a

  1650. lot,

  1651. and he

  1652. loves this

  1653. church.

  1654. Actually,

  1655. in Ephesians,

  1656. if you just

  1657. go to

  1658. Ephesians

  1659. now,

  1660. we'll just

  1661. flick through

  1662. a little

  1663. bit,

  1664. just do

  1665. a mini

  1666. Bible study,

  1667. because

  1668. actually,

  1669. it will

  1670. suddenly,

  1671. you'll

  1672. basically

  1673. color in

  1674. this church

  1675. for us.

  1676. Ephesians,

  1677. the book

  1678. of Ephesians,

    Ephesians 1:15

  1679. chapter 1,

  1680. verse 15.

  1681. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:15

  1682. chapter 1,

  1683. verse 15.

  1684. So,

  1685. Paul visits

  1686. Ephesus,

  1687. this is what

  1688. we see in

  1689. Acts chapter

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  1690. 19,

  1691. and now

  1692. he writes

  1693. to the

  1694. church in

  1695. Ephesus

  1696. from prison.

  1697. And this

  1698. is many years

  1699. later,

  1700. and this is

  1701. what he

  1702. says.

  1703. For this

  1704. reason,

  1705. because I

  1706. have heard

  1707. of your

  1708. faith in

  1709. the Lord

  1710. Jesus,

  1711. and your

  1712. love toward

  1713. all the

  1714. saints,

  1715. I do

  1716. not cease

  1717. to give

  1718. thanks for

  1719. you,

  1720. remembering

  1721. you in

  1722. my prayers.

  1723. Because I

  1724. have heard

  1725. of your

  1726. faith in

  1727. the Lord

  1728. Jesus,

  1729. and your

  1730. love toward

  1731. all the

  1732. saints.

  1733. Later,

  1734. and that

  1735. the God of

  1736. our Lord

  1737. Jesus Christ,

  1738. the Father

  1739. of glory,

  1740. may give you

  1741. the spirit

  1742. of wisdom

  1743. and of

  1744. revelation

  1745. in the

  1746. knowledge of

  1747. him,

  1748. having the

  1749. eyes of

  1750. your hearts

  1751. enlightened,

  1752. that you may

  1753. know what is

  1754. the hope to

  1755. which he has

  1756. called you.

  1757. He's saying,

  1758. I've heard of

  1759. your faith,

  1760. I've heard of

  1761. your love,

  1762. I remember,

  1763. I personally

  1764. remember when

  1765. you burned all

  1766. those books,

  1767. I personally

  1768. remember when

  1769. you received

  1770. the gift of

  1771. the Holy Spirit

  1772. and you

  1773. encountered

  1774. and experienced

  1775. his love.

  1776. The only way

  1777. we even

  1778. experience

  1779. his love,

  1780. as Romans

  1781. 5, 5

  1782. points out

  1783. to us,

  1784. is because

  1785. God pours

  1786. out his

  1787. love onto

  1788. us through

  1789. his Holy

  1790. Spirit.

  1791. So Paul's

  1792. saying,

  1793. can you see

  1794. now as we've

  1795. read the events

  1796. of Acts

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  1797. chapter 19,

  1798. you read what

  1799. he's saying

  1800. here and

  1801. suddenly it

  1802. adds more

  1803. context,

  1804. it adds

  1805. more color.

  1806. Guys,

  1807. I remember

  1808. your faith

  1809. and I remember

  1810. your love.

  1811. I remember

  1812. you know

  1813. how to

  1814. discern

  1815. against the

  1816. spirits.

  1817. You know

  1818. how to

  1819. discern

  1820. what is

  1821. right and

  1822. wrong

  1823. because you

  1824. saw those

  1825. seven guys

  1826. run out

  1827. but naked

  1828. and you

  1829. saw the

  1830. power of

  1831. Jesus

  1832. and I

  1833. remember

  1834. that and

  1835. I do

  1836. not cease

  1837. to give

  1838. thanks for

  1839. that and

  1840. the riches

  1841. of his

  1842. glorious

  1843. inheritance

  1844. in the

  1845. saints.

  1846. I remember

  1847. the immeasurable

  1848. greatness of

  1849. his power

  1850. towards us

  1851. who believe.

  1852. I remember

  1853. when you

  1854. saw and

  1855. you witnessed

  1856. the power

  1857. of Jesus

  1858. firsthand.

  1859. I remember

  1860. when you

  1861. were willing

  1862. to

  1863. sacrifice

  1864. 35,000

  1865. US dollars

  1866. worth of

  1867. self-help

  1868. books

  1869. for this

  1870. Jesus

  1871. and now

  1872. you have

  1873. riches

  1874. of his

  1875. glorious

  1876. inheritance.

  1877. I remember

  1878. all that.

  1879. Stay strong

  1880. is what

  1881. he's saying.

  1882. And that

  1883. he worked

  1884. in Christ

  1885. when he

  1886. raised him

  1887. from the

  1888. dead

  1889. and seated

  1890. him at

  1891. his right

  1892. hand in

  1893. the heavenly

  1894. places.

  1895. Verse 21

  1896. far above

  1897. all rule

  1898. and authority

  1899. in power

  1900. and dominion.

  1901. Jesus

  1902. is Lord

  1903. of all

  1904. or not

  1905. at all.

  1906. You guys

  1907. chose

  1908. Jesus

  1909. in the

  1910. beginning.

  1911. Unfortunately,

  1912. the town

  1913. of Ephesus,

  1914. this great

  1915. town,

  1916. actually ends

  1917. up

  1918. gone.

  1919. Who's been

  1920. to Ephesus

  1921. by the way?

  1922. There we go.

  1923. What is

  1924. Ephesus?

  1925. What does

  1926. it look

  1927. like,

  1928. Flo?

  1929. Flo?

  1930. No.

  1931. Agnes?

  1932. Ruins.

  1933. A pile

  1934. of rocks

  1935. with a

  1936. temple

  1937. that was

  1938. one of

  1939. the seven

  1940. wonders

  1941. of the

  1942. ancient

  1943. world

  1944. is now

  1945. a pile

  1946. of rocks.

  1947. Do you

  1948. know why?

  1949. Do you

  1950. remember why?

  1951. Did your

  1952. tall guy

  1953. tell you

  1954. why?

  1955. Does anyone

  1956. remember?

  1957. The town

  1958. of Ephesus

  1959. was so

  1960. powerful

  1961. because it

  1962. was by a

  1963. river.

  1964. It was by

  1965. the mouth

  1966. of a river

  1967. and so

  1968. that's

  1969. where all

  1970. the sea

  1971. and all

  1972. the imports

  1973. and exports

  1974. would come

  1975. in.

  1976. But eventually

  1977. something happened

  1978. which was

  1979. interesting which

  1980. was called

  1981. silt.

  1982. Anyone remember

  1983. anything from

  1984. geography lessons?

  1985. No,

  1986. neither do I.

  1987. Let me read it

  1988. to you.

  1989. Silt is

  1990. basically a

  1991. substance that

  1992. is like rock

  1993. and mineral

  1994. particles all

  1995. together but

  1996. smaller than

  1997. sand.

  1998. What happened

  1999. over time was

  2000. silt started

  2001. building up

  2002. in the river

  2003. bed at the

  2004. mouth of

  2005. Ephesus.

  2006. And what

  2007. happened then

  2008. was the

  2009. water started

  2010. to get

  2011. drained out.

  2012. What happened

  2013. after that

  2014. is that the

  2015. boats could

  2016. not go in.

  2017. So it no

  2018. longer was

  2019. the sea

  2020. hub.

  2021. And so

  2022. then business

  2023. started to

  2024. drain.

  2025. It started

  2026. to stop.

  2027. And slowly

  2028. but surely

  2029. that great

  2030. town,

  2031. one of the

  2032. seven ancient

  2033. wonders of

  2034. the world,

  2035. is now a

  2036. pile of

  2037. rocks.

  2038. So Paul

  2039. writes to

  2040. the Ephesians

  2041. but there's

  2042. someone even

  2043. more special

  2044. who writes

  2045. to the

  2046. church in

  2047. Ephesus and

  2048. that is in

  2049. the book of

  2050. Revelation.

  2051. This is where

  2052. we'll finish so

  2053. feel free to go

  2054. there.

  2055. I won't have

  2056. you go anywhere

  2057. else.

  2058. Revelation

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  2059. chapter 2.

  2060. Jesus himself

  2061. writes a letter

  2062. to this church.

  2063. It's the first

  2064. church that he

  2065. writes to and

  2066. he says this.

  2067. And again,

  2068. once you've

  2069. understood Acts

  2070. 19 and you

  2071. know the story,

  2072. these words just

  2073. mean so much

  2074. more.

  2075. He writes to

  2076. the church in

  2077. Ephesus and he

  2078. says,

  2079. I know your

  2080. works,

  2081. your toil and

  2082. your patient

  2083. endurance and

  2084. how you cannot

  2085. bear with those

  2086. who are evil but

  2087. have tested those

  2088. who call themselves

  2089. apostles and are

  2090. not.

  2091. Remember,

  2092. reference,

  2093. sons of

  2094. Sceva and

  2095. are not and

  2096. found them to be

  2097. false.

  2098. I know you are

  2099. enduring patiently

  2100. and bearing up for

  2101. my name's sake and

  2102. you have not grown

  2103. weary.

  2104. You've done well.

  2105. You know the

  2106. truth.

  2107. You've been going to

  2108. Bible studies.

  2109. Your head is filled

  2110. with Bible

  2111. knowledge.

  2112. You have

  2113. endured patiently

  2114. and yet it's not

  2115. enough.

  2116. Why?

  2117. But I have this

  2118. against you,

  2119. that you have

  2120. abandoned the

  2121. love you had

  2122. at first.

  2123. That same love

  2124. when the Holy

  2125. Spirit poured out

  2126. on you and you

  2127. felt the love of

  2128. God.

  2129. That same love

  2130. of Jesus that

  2131. caused you to

  2132. burn all those

  2133. books.

  2134. That same love

  2135. is now God.

  2136. remember therefore

  2137. from where you

  2138. have fallen.

  2139. Remember those

  2140. times.

  2141. Remember those

  2142. times when there

  2143. was a riot and

  2144. yet you still

  2145. stood firm.

  2146. You still

  2147. decided that

  2148. Jesus is the

  2149. only way.

  2150. Repent and

  2151. do the works

  2152. you did at

  2153. first.

  2154. If not, I

  2155. will come to

  2156. you and remove

  2157. your lampstand.

  2158. I will close

  2159. your church

  2160. down.

  2161. If you don't

  2162. go back to

  2163. that first

  2164. heart, if you

  2165. don't go back to

  2166. why this started

  2167. in the first

  2168. place, then

  2169. there's no

  2170. point for you

  2171. to exist, is

  2172. what he's

  2173. saying.

  2174. And of

  2175. course, sadly,

  2176. the church of

  2177. Ephesus is no

  2178. more.

  2179. The city of

  2180. Ephesus is no

  2181. more.

  2182. But the

  2183. lessons that we

  2184. can learn here

  2185. are the same.

  2186. If we go back

  2187. and trace back

  2188. to Acts 19 and

  2189. see the works

  2190. that they did

  2191. at first, see

  2192. that the heart

  2193. that they had

  2194. at first, the

  2195. first love that

  2196. they had at

  2197. first, and we

  2198. continue every

  2199. day to take

  2200. our books, take

  2201. our self-help

  2202. books, take

  2203. the things that

  2204. we rely on, take

  2205. our little

  2206. statues, and

  2207. take them to

  2208. the fire to

  2209. burn, and

  2210. remember the

  2211. love that we

  2212. had at first,

  2213. and lift up

  2214. the name of

  2215. Jesus, and

  2216. only the name

  2217. of Jesus, and

  2218. only then will

  2219. he allow us to

  2220. remain.

  2221. I wonder

  2222. whether there

  2223. is, if you've

  2224. been a believer

  2225. for a long,

  2226. long time, I

  2227. wonder whether

  2228. there is silt

  2229. in our own

  2230. hearts, layers

  2231. of sediment

  2232. that have

  2233. built over

  2234. time because

  2235. of things that

  2236. we've let

  2237. into our

  2238. lives, idols

  2239. that we've

  2240. let into our

  2241. lives, little

  2242. statues that

  2243. we rely on,

  2244. books and

  2245. IG accounts

  2246. that we

  2247. follow.

  2248. Do we

  2249. recognize that

  2250. our hearts are

  2251. compromised?

  2252. Do we

  2253. recognize that

  2254. our hearts are

  2255. not pure?

  2256. And it's in

  2257. that moment I

  2258. want you to

  2259. stop, because

  2260. you might go,

  2261. well, then

  2262. how must I

  2263. do better?

  2264. What must I

  2265. do?

  2266. Should I go

  2267. and attend

  2268. another Bible

  2269. study?

  2270. That's not

  2271. what he's

  2272. saying.

  2273. He says, go

  2274. back to your

  2275. first love.

  2276. Go back to

  2277. that moment

  2278. where the

  2279. Holy Spirit

  2280. filled you and

  2281. you were

  2282. overwhelmed.

  2283. You were

  2284. given the

  2285. strength to

  2286. comprehend the

  2287. magnitude of

  2288. the love that

  2289. I have for

  2290. you.

  2291. When I

  2292. dwelled in

  2293. your hearts

  2294. through your

  2295. faith, when

  2296. you were

  2297. willingly giving

  2298. up all the

  2299. things of this

  2300. world to follow

  2301. me, go back

  2302. to that moment.

  2303. Understand

  2304. again what

  2305. grace is.

  2306. Be filled

  2307. again by my

  2308. Holy Spirit.

  2309. Trust me, I'm

  2310. the only one who

  2311. will provide for

  2312. you.

  2313. If you try and

  2314. fight this world,

  2315. if you try and

  2316. fight and invoke

  2317. my name without

  2318. connection with me,

  2319. you will lose all

  2320. your clothes.

  2321. But if you trust

  2322. me, I will give

  2323. you everything that

  2324. you ever needed.

  2325. Why?

  2326. Because I gave

  2327. my life for you,

  2328. is what Jesus

  2329. says.

  2330. you can have

  2331. your first love

  2332. for me because

  2333. I first loved

  2334. you.

  2335. I came to

  2336. find you when

  2337. you were dead,

  2338. when you were

  2339. lost, when you

  2340. were blind.

  2341. I came to give

  2342. my life for

  2343. you.

  2344. Would you

  2345. trust me and

  2346. allow my Holy

  2347. Spirit to live

  2348. inside you now?

  2349. So you would

  2350. live in a

  2351. different way.

  2352. So you would

  2353. allow me to

  2354. confront the

  2355. idols in your

  2356. heart, but not

  2357. to destroy you,

  2358. but to

  2359. complete you.

  2360. Because you

  2361. and I both

  2362. know those

  2363. little statues

  2364. don't work.

  2365. That is what

  2366. he's saying to

  2367. us.

  2368. That is what

  2369. he was saying

  2370. to the church

  2371. in Ephesus.

  2372. That is what

  2373. he's saying to

  2374. the church in

  2375. Hong Kong.

  2376. Do we truly

  2377. believe in the

  2378. name of Jesus?

  2379. You have a

  2380. choice.

  2381. You can mock,

  2382. you can ask

  2383. more, or you

  2384. can believe

  2385. that he is

  2386. the name

  2387. above every

  2388. name.

  2389. That at the

  2390. name of Jesus

  2391. every knee will

  2392. bow and every

  2393. tongue will

  2394. confess that

  2395. he is Lord.

  2396. Let us walk

  2397. out of here as

  2398. people who

  2399. bear his name,

  2400. who glorify

  2401. his name,

  2402. who are just

  2403. hungry and

  2404. thirsty for

  2405. him and his

  2406. kingdom to

  2407. come in this

  2408. world, to

  2409. confront every

  2410. part of this

  2411. world that

  2412. isn't of him.

  2413. Not just

  2414. because he's a

  2415. domineering

  2416. tyrant, but

  2417. because he is

  2418. gracious and

  2419. compassionate,

  2420. and where his

  2421. spirit is, there

  2422. is freedom.

  2423. And don't we

  2424. just all want

  2425. freedom for the

  2426. people around us,

  2427. for the city

  2428. that we live in?

  2429. Let's spend a

  2430. moment now just

  2431. to respond as I

  2432. invite Kelly and

  2433. the team to

  2434. come up.

  2435. Maybe if you

  2436. join me just

  2437. and just to

  2438. bow our heads

  2439. and close our

  2440. eyes and

  2441. ask for the

  2442. Holy Spirit to

  2443. speak to us.

  2444. Jesus, we

  2445. recognize that

  2446. you are either

  2447. Lord of all

  2448. or not at

  2449. all.

  2450. And today here

  2451. as a family,

  2452. as a church,

  2453. we recognize

  2454. your authority,

  2455. your power,

  2456. your dominion,

  2457. but even more

  2458. so your grace,

  2459. your compassion.

  2460. And so we

  2461. repent.

  2462. But we don't

  2463. just stay there.

  2464. By your spirit,

  2465. we also believe.

  2466. and by your

  2467. power we

  2468. follow.

  2469. Would you

  2470. continue to

  2471. confront the

  2472. idols of our

  2473. hearts?

  2474. Thank you that

  2475. you often do it

  2476. in such

  2477. gentleness and

  2478. humility.

  2479. often those

  2480. things that we

  2481. hold on to are

  2482. just so destructive

  2483. to us.

  2484. Those things

  2485. that we do in

  2486. secret, those

  2487. things that we

  2488. think in secret

  2489. are so destructive

  2490. to us.

  2491. But I know,

  2492. but we know the

  2493. gentleness of the

  2494. Father comes and

  2495. approaches and

  2496. seeks to take

  2497. those things

  2498. away.

  2499. Forgive us,

  2500. Lord.

  2501. Lord.

  2502. Lord.

  2503. Lord.

  2504. Lord.

  2505. Lord.

  2506. And so we

  2507. come to you

  2508. with our fears

  2509. of failure,

  2510. with our anxieties

  2511. for the future,

  2512. with our judgment

  2513. against others,

  2514. with our pursuit

  2515. of pleasure.

  2516. and we ask that

  2517. by the name

  2518. and the power

  2519. of Jesus,

  2520. we will be set

  2521. free.

  2522. We remember.

  2523. We repent.

  2524. And we go back

  2525. to our first love.

  2526. for those of you

  2527. who are here

  2528. at pre-service

  2529. prayer,

  2530. we work through

  2531. the Lord's prayer.

  2532. And just personally,

  2533. I've been meditating

  2534. on that first line,

  2535. our Father,

  2536. hallowed be your name.

  2537. Already,

  2538. we're on our feet,

  2539. we're on our knees

2540. when we pray that prayer.

  2541. We're praying

  2542. that the Father's

  2543. name would be hallowed.

  2544. We're praying

  2545. that Jesus' name

  2546. would be hallowed

  2547. in our lives.

  2548. And so,

  2549. and just remind it

  2550. that we're beginning

2551. a season of Lent as well.

  2552. And it's a season

  2553. of re-consecrating

  2554. ourselves to the Lord

2555. in fresh and new ways,

  2556. praying that we would

2557. do that as a church

  2558. and as a community

2559. as we go from here

  2560. with fresh reverence

  2561. for his name

  2562. to live more,

2563. live lives that reflect him.

  2564. So let's pray,

  2565. church,

  2566. as we close.

  2567. God,

  2568. we revere your name

  2569. and we thank you

2570. that you walk with us

  2571. step by step

  2572. in this life

  2573. that you've created us

  2574. in your image,

2575. that you are restoring us

  2576. to your image.

  2577. And we pray that

  2578. in this season,

  2579. in this new year,

2580. and in our lead up

  2581. to Easter,

  2582. that you would,

  2583. that Christ would dwell

  2584. in our hearts richly

2585. and that for each person here

2586. that you would guide us

2587. as to what it means

  2588. to look more

  2589. like our Savior

  2590. day by day

  2591. to be renewed

  2592. into his image

  2593. until we enter

  2594. your glory again.

  2595. Thank you

2596. that we can do that together.

  2597. Would your name

  2598. be hallowed

  2599. in our lives.

  2600. We pray this

  2601. in Jesus' name.

  2602. Amen.

  2603. Amen.

  2604. Amen.

  2605. Amen.

  2606. Amen.
