  1. Last week I talked about the invested leader, the leader who admonished with tears, who was willing to be with his people night and day.

  2. And it would rebuke them, would encourage them.

  3. But all of it would be done just through this personal relationship.

  4. Just this leader that is humble, this leader that is filled with integrity, this leader that has courage.

  5. And honestly, you can see from Paul's writing, he also gets so blessed by the people that he leads.

  6. He writes to the church in Ephesus, in Philippi, and he just has this love that's just exploding for his people.

  7. I pray for that kind of love that I would have for you.

  8. I pray if you're in a small group that your leader would have that same love for you.

  9. And I pray that you would have that same love for your leader.

  10. And today we continue, because at the end, previously in the book of Acts, chapter 20, we see him saying goodbye to his leaders.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  11. And they're crying and they're on their knees because he's about to head off.

  12. He's about to head off to Jerusalem.

  13. And the chances are they know that actually he's not coming back.

  14. This is the last time that they see him.

  15. And then the journey begins.

  16. And this is where we jump in, in Acts, chapter 21.

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  17. So if I could invite you to stand for the word of the Lord.

  18. And when we had parted from them and set sail, we came by a straight course to Kos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

  19. And having found a ship crossing to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail.

  20. When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left, we sailed to Syria and landed in Tyre.

  21. From there, the ship was to unload its cargo.

  22. And having sought out the disciples, we stayed there for seven days.

  23. And through the Spirit, they were telling Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.

  24. When our days there were ended, we departed and went on our journey.

  25. And they all, with wives and children, accompanied us until we were outside the city.

  26. And kneeling down on the beach, we prayed and said farewell to one another.

  27. Then we went on board the ship, and they returned home.

  28. When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemaeus, and we greeted the brothers and stayed with them for one day.

  29. On the next day, we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the Evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

  30. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

  31. While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

  32. And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands and said,

  33. Thus says the Holy Spirit,

  34. This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns his belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

  35. When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

  36. Then Paul answered,

  37. What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart?

  38. For I am ready not only to be imprisoned, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

  39. And since he would not be persuaded, we seized and said,

  40. Let the will of the Lord be done.

  41. After those days, we got ready and went up to Jerusalem.

  42. And some of the disciples from Caesarea went with us, bringing us to the house of Manassan of Cyprus,

  43. an early disciple with whom we should lodge.

  44. This is the word of God.

  45. Praise be to God.

  46. Please take a seat.

  47. Thank you.

  48. Holy Spirit, we ask that you would be here with us this morning.

  49. I'm not convinced.

  50. My words are they need to hear.

  51. In fact, I'm certain of it.

  52. We all seek to hear your voice.

  53. We humble ourselves before you and ask that you would lead us.

  54. You would speak to us.

  55. You would convict us.

  56. You would admonish us.

  57. You would encourage us.

  58. You would build us up.

  59. We are here for you.

  60. In your name we pray.

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. I'm going to speed up a little bit during the book of Acts, this final bit now,

  64. because he's just on a journey after journey.

  65. We're on a tour with Paul as he heads to his final destination, which is ultimately death.

  66. And in that journey, there's some things that I think we can pick up that are actually really, really fascinating to me.

  67. We see here in these 16 verses, he travels and he goes to quite a few different places.

  68. And the first thing that I thought when I was reading this passage, I was like, this is a real person.

  69. These are real people living real lives, facing real problems, and that they're also real friends.

  70. It made me ask the question, when was the last time I cried for a friend?

  71. When was the last time you cried for a friend?

  72. Whether it's a goodbye or whether it's just something that they're going through where you're like, it actually breaks your heart.

  73. When was the last time that happened for you? Do you remember?

  74. When was that?

  75. Does anyone have any examples of when that could have been?

  76. Flo, you're nodding.

  77. Yeah.

  78. So seeing friends in difficult situations where they don't really know what to do next,

  79. you don't really know what to do next, and you're just out there and your heart just breaks.

  80. When was the last time you said goodbye to a friend and you were both crying?

  81. That's of course a measure, not the only measure, but of just friends that have really invested in one another.

  82. You've been through times together, the good ones and the bad ones.

  83. And you see Paul here, he's going through.

  84. And actually, something interesting, as you look at the book of Acts, you see him going to these different places.

  85. There's two things that he keeps doing every time.

  86. It's kind of just his kind of MO, what he does.

  87. First thing he does, actually, what is it?

  88. What does he do?

  89. When Paul usually, he goes into a city, what's the first thing that he really does?

  90. Kelly?

  91. I have to go to the city.

  92. He goes to the temple.

  93. He goes to the synagogue.

  94. Why?

  95. To worship and also to engage with the people there to start talking to him.

  96. That's the first thing that he does.

  97. The second thing that he does, he goes to find friends.

  98. He's just on the lookout for friends.

  99. Imagine Paul walking into a city.

  100. He's like, okay, what I need to do is God's given me a mission, so I'm going to go preach the good news.

  101. But I've also got to find friends as I do it.

  102. You see in Acts 16, he hangs out in Philippi.

  103. Actually, he didn't want to go to Philippi.

  104. He wanted to stay in Asia because that's where the good food is.

  105. But he didn't stay in Asia.

  106. And the Holy Spirit in Acts 16 says, don't stay in Asia.

  107. The food is too good for you.

  108. You'll get too fat.

  109. I want you to go to Europe where you will only have fish and chips.

  110. And that's it.

  111. And so he goes to Europe and he goes to Philippi.

  112. And he's there.

  113. And actually, there's not that many Jews there.

  114. So he's hanging around for a while.

  115. This is Acts 16, by the way.

  116. He's hanging out in Philippi.

  117. There's no Jews.

  118. There's actually not even a synagogue.

  119. Why?

  120. Because in order for a place to have a synagogue, you need at least 10 Jews.

  121. There's not even 10 Jews there.

  122. So there's no synagogue.

  123. So he's like, but I still want to find my people.

  124. I've still got to find friends.

  125. So what does he do?

  126. He goes to the outskirts of the city where there are a few ladies.

  127. And one of them is called Lydia.

  128. And that's when the church in Europe begins.

  129. That's the very first church in Europe there.

  130. And then, of course, in Acts 17, he goes to Athens.

  131. And then he goes to, in Acts 18, he goes to Corinth.

  132. And he finds Priscilla and Aquila.

  133. He's looking for friends.

  134. He's always looking for people to be around.

  135. Joe and I, we grew up in this place in England called Leicester.

  136. Has anyone been to Leicester before?

  137. Wow, you have.

  138. What did you think of it?

  139. That was Birmingham, Julia, when you came to me.

  140. So you've never been to Leicester.

  141. So, so cool.

  142. My hopes were lifted there just for a second.

  143. Has anyone, no one been to Leicester?

  144. Good for you.

  145. No one deserves to be doing good to Leicester.

  146. Leora, you've been to Leicester?

  147. What did you think of it?

  148. Unimpressionable.

  149. Correct.

  150. There is literally, what good can come out of Nazareth and Leicester?

  151. That is in the word of God.

  152. So we, we were the only two Chinese kids in, in school, in school.

  153. Just wide working class kind of school.

  154. We were the only Chinese kids.

  155. So naturally I would tell everyone that I was related to Bruce Lee.

  156. And they would believe it and that would be okay.

  157. I counted actually, I don't know about you, I don't know whether, because we had different

  158. schooling systems, as you can tell from the different intelligent level that we have here.

  159. But I think I went to seven different schools.

  160. Seven.

  161. I don't know whether you counted, but for me it was, it was seven.

  162. The only Chinese kid going to different schools constantly.

  163. Looking back, I'm like, man, that was traumatizing.

  164. I guess that explains a lot of who I am today.

  165. And I'll tell you what my MO was every time.

  166. And this was, you know, this was six-year-old James, this was eight-year-old James, this

  167. was 11-year-old James.

  168. I would find the guys who play football and I would try and play with them.

  169. Because honestly, if I become friends with them, I mean, they're the ones that bully

  170. people anyway.

  171. So if I become friends with them, then it's okay.

  172. Then I'll be safe.

  173. And so every time I went to a new school, I would go find, okay, who are the kids that

  174. I need to befriend?

  175. When I came to Hong Kong, when I walked into the Society of the Friendship Group, who says,

  176. oh, who do I need to get to know so that I will be safe?

  177. So I resonate a little bit with Paul.

  178. As he walks into these cities, he's like, I need to find my friends.

  179. I need to find my people so I can actually feel safe.

  180. So I listen to a wide range of different people during my week through podcasts and sermons.

  181. And most of them are pastors you'll be comforted to know.

  182. But every now and again, I really like to listen to people outside who, just to remind me,

  183. it's what Keller says, you know, hold the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other.

  184. And just to be connected to the world.

  185. And actually, two of my favorite communicators and thinkers are actually Simon Sinek and Trevor

  186. Noah.

  187. Hilarious on different levels, but actually they just say some really, really insightful things

  188. in the most humorous way.

  189. And it's inspiring for me.

  190. One of their recent podcasts, they talk a lot about friendship.

  191. They said, actually, friendship has completely been left out of society.

  192. We don't even know actually how to make friends anymore.

  193. Actually, something that he said that was really interesting.

  194. He was like, actually, the breakdown of friendship is a real thing because we simply don't have

  195. time for them anymore.

  196. Often when we're in our pursuit of career, in our pursuit of family, what's the thing that

  197. really gets left behind?

  198. Friends.

  199. Friends are the ones that we leave behind.

  200. And he's saying, actually, the problem is when you don't have friendships, actually,

  201. you're missing a key part of just what it means to be a flourishing human.

  202. We need friendships.

  203. So what happens is when we don't have time for friends, we don't have time to be investing

  204. in friends and to be receiving what only friends can give.

  205. Spouses cannot give certain things.

  206. Family cannot give certain things.

  207. And so when we miss what friends can give, we put all those expectations onto our girlfriend,

  208. our boyfriend, our husband, our wife.

  209. And then the problem becomes like, why aren't you satisfying me?

  210. Why aren't you caring for me?

  211. In the way that actually only friends really can.

  212. This week, I told you I had an up and down week and I was telling my friend.

  213. And then again, super busy guy.

  214. The first thing he said was, well, it's not a good week.

  215. Let's jump on a call.

  216. Five minutes.

  217. That's all we need.

  218. Five minutes.

  219. You tell me what's going on.

  220. We pray.

  221. That's it.

  222. We drop it.

  223. And done.

  224. After those five minutes, to be honest, ended up being about 25.

  225. It was like, I was blessed.

  226. Do you have friends?

  227. The Netflix show, The Live to a 100, where it talks about the blue zones, where people

  228. live to 100.

  229. Of course, healthy diet, of course, olive oil and pasta.

  230. But really, community.

  231. Friends.

  232. A place where you feel known.

  233. A place where you know.

  234. The problem here is a lot of us, especially those in big cities, we have kind of,

  235. given up on friendship.

  236. Why?

  237. Because, well, actually, you find this, and we were talking about this the other day.

  238. As you grow up in school, your best friend, and who remembers their best friend in grade

  239. three?

  240. You do?

  241. What's his name?

  242. What her name?

  243. Rain Man.

  244. Dustin Hoffman.

  245. Your friend was a movie.

  246. So you do remember?

  247. Okay.

  248. One or two.

  249. But of course, oh, you remember.

  250. Your best friend's name?

  251. Sixty-some-odd years.

  252. Incredible.

  253. And you still keep in touch.

  254. That is incredible.

  255. What a blessing to be able to have those.

  256. And of course, also sad to say that they are rarities to have those kind of friends

  257. for that long.

  258. Agnes, you've got to...

  259. Still friends?

  260. Vincent?

  261. Huh?

  262. Vincent's not your friend?

  263. I knew it.

  264. Since primary one.

  265. Incredible.

  266. Well, then maybe it's just me.

  267. Maybe I just don't have friends.

  268. Of course, changing school seven times does do that to you.

  269. But actually, you realize that actually, as you get older and older, your friendship circle

  270. just gets smaller and smaller.

  271. In fact, your actual appetite and your interest in making friends gets smaller and smaller.

  272. So by the time you reach kind of like young adulthood, you're kind of like, okay, I've

  273. been there, done that.

  274. Do you remember at university when you walked into university campus for the first time and

  275. you're like, I need to make friends.

  276. I need to survive.

  277. And then what's the saying?

  278. The saying is it takes you three hours to make a friend and then it takes you three years

  279. to try and get rid of them.

  280. But then as you get older, you're like, I just can't have that many friends.

  281. I just need two, three.

  282. Or if you're a guy, just half a friend.

  283. And we just sit next to each other and not talk.

  284. And we're okay.

  285. We're bros.

  286. But in a city like Hong Kong, you invest in friendships and then in a few years time,

  287. they leave.

  288. And then, okay, really miss them.

  289. Cry.

  290. Move on.

  291. Be a new friend.

  292. Get together.

  293. Let's get our families together.

  294. We do it again after a few years.

  295. Oh, cry.

  296. They're gone.

  297. By the third round, you're like, you know what?

  298. It's okay.

  299. I'm just going to watch movies at home instead.

  300. Friendships are hard.

  301. Yet I can see that every time Paul goes into a new place, he's looking for friends.

  302. Why do you need friends?

  303. Because you need people to sit in the mud with you.

  304. This is something that Simon Sinek said.

  305. You need someone who is willing to sit in the mud with you in your worst times.

  306. Friends that are just good for you to hang out and have a laugh with and play board games with.

  307. Good.

  308. Really good.

  309. But you also need that friend who's willing to show up at your father's funeral.

  310. Which is what happened to me.

  311. Actually, when our dad passed, actually two of our friends moved in with us for a few weeks.

  312. I don't remember why.

  313. I don't remember how.

  314. I just remember them being there.

  315. And I remember the funeral, we had a blast.

  316. For some reason, I don't know why.

  317. Of course, the actual ceremony and the service was sad and we were crying.

  318. But as soon as we were downstairs, my friends just kept making me laugh.

  319. And it was mildly inappropriate.

  320. And people were looking at this.

  321. Don't be wrong.

  322. Pray for James.

  323. But it was just such a blessing to me and myself that there would be friends who would be not afraid to have these awkward conversations.

  324. And also not afraid just to have a laugh even in the most dire circumstances such as death.

  325. Do you have those kinds of friends?

  326. I actually think Paul did.

  327. He had Barney, Barnabas.

  328. He had Silas and he had Timmy.

  329. And actually, towards the end of his life, he had Timmy who was, of course, his mentee.

  330. He actually told Timmy, hey, come to me quickly.

  331. Of course, Paul only needed God.

  332. We know that.

  333. And yet he would tell Timmy, please, come to me.

  334. He would tell other guys, hey, remember to bring my jacket.

  335. Remember I left it there at your house?

  336. Bring my jacket to me.

  337. You could see that Paul was just connected to his friends.

  338. And as you see this tour with Paul, you realize it's not just a tour with Paul.

  339. It's actually a tour with Paul and friends.

  340. And you start seeing it in Scripture.

  341. You see Jonathan and David.

  342. You see Ruth and Naomi.

  343. You see Job and his buddies when he's going through the worst time in his life.

  344. And actually, for seven days, his friends, Job's friends were doing pretty well until they opened their mouths.

  345. And then they didn't do well.

  346. But actually, for those seven days, they were just willing to sit there with him in the mud, not saying anything, just crying with him.

  347. Just going, life does really, really, really suck.

  348. And we have no answers.

  349. But there's one thing we can do.

  350. Our one response is that we will be here with you.

  351. Paul had friends.

  352. We see in Scripture we do that.

  353. Paul suffered a lot.

  354. And the next example I'm going to give based by no means the same.

  355. But I remember.

  356. Do you guys remember something called COVID?

  357. So during COVID, there was a few years where none of us were allowed to leave.

  358. Right?

  359. Well, yeah, actually, that was true.

  360. Or you could leave and then not come back for a while.

  361. There's certain parts that I really miss about those few years where none of us were allowed to leave.

  362. Where every time we would meet, we would kind of complain because we read the SCMP article today about what the newest restrictions were.

  363. When it went from three days to seven days to 21 days.

  364. And the amount of cases when we followed it.

  365. It was 56 one day.

  366. And then the next day it was 200 cases.

  367. There was something about being here.

  368. Some of my closest friends right now in Hong Kong.

  369. My fondest memories are during that time.

  370. But we had kids and we have nowhere to go.

  371. So we went to this place called Inspiration Lake.

  372. Has anyone been there?

  373. Inspiration Lake, Disney.

  374. Beautiful.

  375. The restrictions there are super loose.

  376. And so that was our refuge.

  377. That was our hiding place.

  378. And those are friends that I hold so dearly.

  379. Friends are the ones who stick with you.

  380. And you see here, Paul's about to go through something really hard.

  381. And he's about to enter the final chapter of his life.

  382. And what is he doing?

  383. He's surrounded himself by friends.

  384. Let's just have a look.

  385. So he sets sail.

  386. Not on the Royal Caribbean.

  387. But he just sets sail.

  388. And he starts heading.

  389. And he lands at a place called Tyre.

  390. And then he goes to Ptolemaeus.

  391. And then he goes to Caesarea.

  392. And each time he goes, he reaches out to people.

  393. When he goes to Tyre, verse 4.

  394. And having sought out the disciples, we stayed there for seven days.

  395. So he goes to this new place.

  396. And he's like, okay, I need to find some friends.

  397. I need to find some people.

  398. So he meets these people.

  399. And he hangs out and stays with them and lives with them for seven days.

  400. And this isn't just then small talk and chit-chat.

  401. What do you do?

  402. What do you do?

  403. But it was literally, oh, you're a follower of Christ as well.

  404. Me too.

  405. And you can tell about because straight away, you know, the next thing that they describe is,

  406. and through the Spirit, they were telling Paul not to go to Jerusalem.

  407. Why?

  408. Because they were having a time of prayer.

  409. Why?

  410. Because they were hearing from the Holy Spirit that actually this Paul that they'd only just met,

  411. but they had become really good friends with, he was about to suffer in Jerusalem.

  412. So these new friends of his were like, don't go.

  413. They weren't telling him not to obey the Holy Spirit.

  414. They were saying, hey, the Holy Spirit told us that what you're going to face next

  415. is going to be really tough.

  416. It's going to be imprisonment.

  417. It might even be death.

  418. Please, we urge you, please don't go.

  419. Paul acknowledges them, doesn't listen to them.

  420. I'll talk a little bit more about that later.

  421. But then afterwards, he still goes.

  422. Verse five.

  423. When our days there were ended, we departed and went on our journey,

  424. and they all, with wives and children, accompanied us until we were outside the city.

  425. And kneeling down on the beach, we prayed and said farewell to one another.

  426. Then we went on board the ship, and they returned home.

  427. I have this beautiful scene, image in my head of Paul and these new friends

  428. with their wives and their children walking along the beach.

  429. I'm going to call this the ministry of the beach.

  430. Can you just imagine these people, these friends, these families walking together,

  431. walking to his death, walking to his imprisonment.

  432. And they would just be on the beach.

  433. And then not caring what other people think,

  434. when it's time for him to get on the boat, they all kneel down on the beach.

  435. Just this beautiful picture of what spiritual friendship looks like.

  436. When you know someone is about to head into danger.

  437. And they are still, they just have this posture of resolve.

  438. I'm going.

  439. In chapter 20, he says, I am constrained by the Holy Spirit.

  440. What does that mean?

  441. I'm so compelled, I can't not go.

  442. Do you understand?

  443. I can't not go.

  444. I've heard the Holy Spirit talk.

  445. I've heard God tell me this.

  446. How can I not go to where God calls me?

  447. And these new friends, they basically accept it.

  448. They have a posture of humility.

  449. And they say, okay.

  450. Well, if you still won't listen and you don't want to stay here,

  451. then we will walk with you.

  452. And we will take you as far as we can.

  453. The Western church struggles with something,

  454. which is the concept and the idea of suffering.

  455. We struggle with it because we don't think it should happen.

  456. We struggle with it because we've heard someone say,

  457. well, Jesus is for our good.

  458. So everything, when we invite Jesus into our lives,

  459. our lives will be happy and peaceful and healthy.

  460. But the moment we get sick, the moment something happens,

  461. our first reaction is, God, are you there?

  462. Are you real?

  463. We've bought into this lie, and I'll call it a lie,

  464. that the human existence does not need to have suffering.

  465. When actually, suffering is very much a part of the human experience.

  466. Francis Chan does this sermon,

  467. and he goes through this example of every single book in the New Testament,

  468. and he points out the points and the places of suffering that happen.

  469. Every chapter, every book in the book of the New Testament,

  470. talks about suffering.

  471. Somehow, somewhere along the way,

  472. we've grown up in church,

  473. where now we've gotten to a point where we're like,

  474. if I follow Christ, there will be no suffering.

  475. How?

  476. How did we get there?

  477. When we see here, time and time again,

  478. that is really all we see.

  479. A famous Christian apologetics guy said this,

  480. that actually that question of,

  481. if there is a God, then why is there still suffering?

  482. He only ever heard that question in the first world,

  483. in the Western world.

  484. Because of the rest of the world,

  485. they are very acquainted with this friend called suffering.

  486. That the world is not in the perfect place.

  487. That it is broken.

  488. That there is pain.

  489. There is war.

  490. There is death.

  491. But somehow, in our Western church,

  492. we've adopted it.

  493. And then we try to avoid it.

  494. And so when something goes wrong in our lives,

  495. the first thing that we say is,

  496. God, this must not be part of your plan.

  497. When actually, sometimes,

  498. suffering shows us, proves us,

  499. that actually we are right in the center of God's plan.

  500. And you can see it.

  501. You can see the examples here.

  502. I'm so sorry.

  503. You can see it.

  504. The question is, then what do we do?

  505. When we go through suffering,

  506. do we pray, God, would you remove the suffering?

  507. Or do we pray, God, would you give me the courage to face it?

  508. I hear about this pastor who was arrested

  509. and put in prison for his faith in Central Asia.

  510. And he was getting tired.

  511. He was getting exhausted.

  512. He was getting discouraged.

  513. Will he ever be released?

  514. And his prayer wasn't that he would be released.

  515. His prayer was that,

  516. God, would you bring me a friend?

  517. And lo and behold, two weeks later,

  518. another pastor gets arrested.

  519. And he has put in.

  520. And he rejoiced.

  521. He didn't tell the other pastor.

  522. That was the prayer, I guess.

  523. But the accounts come out afterwards

  524. that they were released.

  525. They both said that was the best time of their lives.

  526. Can you imagine what that even means?

  527. And you might say, oh, that's...

  528. What is that?

  529. Is that even...

  530. Well, Acts 15 and 16,

  531. you see Paul in prison with his friend Silas,

  532. with his boy Silas.

  533. They've been beaten.

  534. They're bleeding.

  535. They're lying on the floor.

  536. And what does Paul say?

  537. Well, he doesn't actually say.

  538. He's like, should we sing some Hillsong?

  539. Should we worship a little bit?

  540. Why don't you sing the first verse

  541. and I'll sing the chorus?

  542. You worshiped.

  543. And I can imagine they were just close.

  544. Friends that are right and die.

  545. Friends that are so close that suffer with you

  546. that they become family.

  547. That's the spiritual friendship that we're looking for.

  548. That is it.

  549. As the modern theologian says,

  550. what does he say?

  551. I don't got friends.

  552. I got family.

  553. Fasten the Furies.

  554. Do we have those kinds of people in our lives

  555. that actually, even when we disagree...

  556. Do you have a friend who disagrees with you?

  557. And the moment they disagree with you,

  558. you still just love them

  559. and you have that engagement

  560. and that you talk to them?

  561. That's the friend that we need.

  562. Not the friend that when we have a different view to them,

  563. suddenly it becomes,

  564. oh, then we must cancel each other.

  565. We must not belong together.

  566. In fact, I think that's the very reason

  567. why we should belong together,

  568. is when we have friends who have different opinions

  569. because that's how we grow.

  570. And so you see this

  571. and then it carries on.

  572. So they go on aboard the ship, verse 6,

  573. and then the new friends from Tyre return home.

  574. Verse 7,

  575. And when we had finished the voyage from Tyre,

  576. we arrived at Ptolemaeus

  577. and we greeted the brothers

  578. and stayed with them for one day.

  579. On the next day, we departed and came to Caesarea

  580. and we entered the house of Philip the Evangelist,

  581. who was one of the sevens who stayed with them.

  582. Philip the Evangelist, we've seen him before.

  583. He comes from Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  584. My favorite chapter,

  585. where he meets that Ethiopian

  586. and he runs alongside him.

  587. It's that Philip.

  588. That Philip who wasn't afraid

  589. of following God's mission

  590. and went into Samaria

  591. and went to basically spread the good news.

  592. That Philip.

  593. But now he's settled here

  594. and then he has four daughters

  595. and they all live with him

  596. and they all prophesy.

  597. So if anyone had any doubts

  598. as to whether women get the spiritual gifts,

  599. we see right here,

  600. there's four daughters.

  601. Can't imagine living with four daughters in one house,

  602. but you see that he had friends there.

  603. And then you have Agabus,

  604. another friend who comes,

  605. who also was in the earlier book of Acts,

  606. in Acts chapter 11,

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  607. when he prophesies a famine.

  608. So you see these people just getting together,

  609. spending time together

  610. and coming to us.

  611. And this is where Agabus comes out

  612. with another prophecy.

  613. And coming to us,

  614. verse 11,

  615. when he took Paul's belt

  616. and bound his own feet and hands

  617. and said,

  618. thus says the Holy Spirit,

  619. this is how the Jews at Jerusalem

  620. will bind the man who owns this belt

  621. and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

  622. So a new place,

  623. a new friend,

  624. saying the same thing.

  625. That when you get to Jerusalem,

  626. you will be bound.

  627. You will be put in prison.

  628. This kind of friendship

  629. isn't the type of friendship

  630. that just hangs out

  631. and enjoys dinners together.

  632. This is the type of friendship.

  633. Can you imagine

  634. what kind of place they were in

  635. in their minds and in their hearts

  636. to get to the point

  637. where they are praying

  638. and that they hear from the Holy Spirit

  639. and that the Holy Spirit speaks to them.

  640. These are friends

  641. that are not just on a physical,

  642. earthly level,

  643. but they're on a spiritual level

  644. where they are sharing and praying

  645. and diving into the deep spiritual things together.

  646. And then Agabus here

  647. is a little bit intense.

  648. Borrowes Paul's belt,

  649. straps himself up

  650. and says,

  651. this is what's going to happen to you

  652. is what God is telling me.

  653. It's interesting.

  654. Remember,

  655. who writes the book of Acts?

  656. Luke.

  657. So what you see here is then

  658. before in Tyre,

  659. Luke is saying

  660. they were trying to tell Paul not to go.

  661. In verse 12,

  662. when we heard this,

  663. we and the people there

  664. urged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

  665. So Luke's kind of just recording all this

  666. and writing it for us,

  667. for our benefit.

  668. And so this is what happened in Tyre.

  669. And then we're in the reach of this area

  670. and Agabus gives this prophecy.

  671. Luke's like,

  672. oh boy,

  673. this is for real.

  674. We and the people

  675. all tried to stop him from going.

  676. And yet here comes Paul's answer.

  677. What are you doing?

  678. Weeping and breaking my heart.

  679. For I am ready not only to be imprisoned,

  680. but even to die in Jerusalem

  681. for the name of the Lord Jesus.

  682. He doesn't say,

  683. how dare you?

  684. He doesn't say,

  685. I reject what you're saying.

  686. He's saying,

  687. guys,

  688. don't do this to me.

  689. Don't do this to me.

  690. You know

  691. what God is telling me to do.

  692. And yes,

  693. you also know

  694. what I'm going to face there.

  695. It's funny,

  696. just rewind a little bit.

  697. Acts 20,

  698. when he's talking to his elders

  699. from Ephesus,

  700. he says this,

  701. verse 22,

  702. and now behold,

  703. I'm going to Jerusalem

  704. constrained by the Spirit,

  705. not knowing what will happen to me there.

  706. Of course,

  707. he doesn't really not know.

  708. He does know

  709. because he carries on saying,

  710. except that the Holy Spirit

  711. testifies to me in every city

  712. that imprisonment

  713. and afflictions await me.

  714. Joe and I,

  715. our families,

  716. we love going on cruise ships

  717. because we have children

  718. and it's just easier.

  719. And so we go to a place,

  720. we get off,

  721. we walk around,

  722. pretend we know the place well

  723. and then get back on the ship

  724. and just keep eating

  725. and go back to the playroom.

  726. But Paul's tour was different.

  727. Paul's cruise tour

  728. was every port that he went to,

  729. he would face affliction

  730. and imprisonment.

  731. Don't you think there'd be a moment

  732. where he'd be like,

  733. guys,

  734. I think I'm not going to get off the boat today.

  735. I don't want to get beaten today.

  736. And yet the fire that he had,

  737. the heart that he had,

  738. even when his friends,

  739. even when his boy Luke,

  740. that he's writing all this down,

  741. you can imagine him just writing,

  742. oh, I best record this for the people.

  743. And then he's like,

  744. you know what?

  745. Paul, seriously,

  746. there's enough people telling us not to go.

  747. We should stay put here.

  748. It's pretty nice here.

  749. And yet he says,

  750. why are you doing this to him?

  751. Well,

  752. interestingly,

  753. what happens here,

  754. verse 14,

  755. and since he would not be persuaded,

  756. we ceased and said,

  757. let the will of the Lord be done.

  758. And after these days,

  759. we got ready and went up Jerusalem.

  760. And some of the disciples from Caesarea

  761. went with us,

  762. bringing us to the house of Manasson,

  763. of Cyprus,

  764. an early disciple with whom we should lodge.

  765. His friends see that there's no,

  766. there's no turning this guy.

  767. There's no changing his mind.

  768. And they said,

  769. fine,

  770. we will come with you.

  771. The ministry of the beach,

  772. the ministry of just being present.

  773. When friends disagree with you,

  774. yet still go with you

  775. into the fire.

  776. What kinds of friends are those?

  777. Not earthly friends.

  778. They are brothers and sisters in Christ

  779. who have made the same decision

  780. to follow Jesus,

  781. even into persecution.

  782. Now,

  783. I've said this before,

  784. and I'll say this again.

  785. We live in a very comfortable setting right now.

  786. I don't know how much we've paid to be here.

  787. Now,

  788. I also acknowledge there are people in this room

  789. who have counted the cost,

  790. who have actually turned on family

  791. to follow Jesus

  792. and are worshipping with us here right now.

  793. And I want you to know that I see you,

  794. I acknowledge you,

  795. that there has been a price that you have paid

  796. to sit here.

  797. But I also know there's a lot of us here

  798. who don't have that experience.

  799. We've never had to really count the cost

  800. of being a follower of Christ.

  801. We've never really had to be in a place

  802. where,

  803. should I go to church this Sunday?

  804. Because I might get caught by the authority.

  805. We've not had the privilege

  806. of going through that.

  807. And the problem is,

  808. when we don't have,

  809. we've not had the privilege

  810. of going through that,

  811. then there's a chance

  812. that actually our love for Him

  813. hasn't been refined

  814. in the way that those

  815. who have gone through that

  816. have benefited from,

  817. have grown through.

  818. But,

  819. there are things

  820. that we have paid the cost for.

  821. Or at least there maybe are things

  822. that we should.

  823. Again,

  824. it's the same question that I ask.

  825. Often.

  826. What has being here cost you?

  827. And if it hasn't cost you anything,

  828. then what is it worth to you?

  829. If our faith in following Jesus

  830. hasn't cost us anything,

  831. then maybe it isn't really worth anything

  832. to us.

  833. But,

  834. what if we lived lives

  835. in a way where,

  836. okay,

  837. we are not facing imminent danger,

  838. but,

  839. there are decisions

  840. that we're going to make,

  841. the places we're going to be at,

  842. the way we're going to act at work,

  843. that will actually slow

  844. our career progression down.

  845. Where actually,

  846. if I do this

  847. and I follow Jesus in this way

  848. and I live in this way,

  849. actually,

  850. I won't get the promotion.

  851. Because my boss will see

  852. that I'm doing the same thing

  853. as those guys.

  854. What if that was the cost?

  855. And honestly,

  856. big picture wise,

  857. it's still pretty lame.

  858. But let's just go with it for now.

  859. What if it was,

  860. you made decisions

  861. in your workplace

  862. where actually,

  863. I am willingly sacrificing

  864. my promotion next

  865. so I can spend more time

  866. with my small group?

  867. And it's okay

  868. if I get overlooked.

  869. Because what is my job anyway?

  870. I don't get to write it

  871. on my grave.

  872. It's not eternal.

  873. All it will do

  874. is take up more time

  875. for me to do things

  876. that aren't as important to me.

  877. What if we were people

  878. who said,

  879. actually,

  880. I don't mind sacrificing that.

  881. Of course,

  882. there will be people around us

  883. who are like,

  884. what are you doing?

  885. That's less money.

  886. You've lost that job title.

  887. But what if we were people

  888. who said,

  889. actually,

  890. I've counted the cost

  891. and this is nothing compared

  892. to the surpassing worth

  893. of knowing Christ Jesus,

  894. my Lord.

  895. What if we were in positions

  896. where I am in full-time ministry

  897. in my office,

  898. in my workplace

  899. and that's my primary goal

  900. and my work will serve that,

  901. will submit to that

  902. and I will do my very best

  903. in my work

  904. and some of us here,

  905. the Lord has placed us

  906. in positions

  907. of power

  908. so that we can

  909. be a force for good,

  910. that we can show people

  911. that Jesus is Lord

  912. in a way

  913. that only you can.

  914. What if we were

  915. those kinds of people?

  916. What if we choose God

  917. and it means

  918. we don't choose

  919. that relationship?

  920. Then actually,

  921. you know

  922. that the relationship

  923. isn't going to draw you

  924. closer to God

  925. and you wrestle

  926. and you argue with yourself

  927. and you try and rationalize it.

  928. What if that was

  929. your cost today?

  930. What if that was

  931. your cost of saying,

  932. actually,

  933. today I won't choose

  934. look,

  935. I don't know

  936. what the future holds.

  937. If I miss out on you,

  938. I don't know

  939. whether I'll have

  940. someone in the future

  941. but it doesn't matter

  942. because I count

  943. that nothing

  944. compared to the surpassing

  945. worth of knowing

  946. Christ Jesus.

  947. What if we started

  948. making those decisions?

  949. Not every one of us here

  950. will be persecuted

  951. for our faith

  952. but there are costs

  953. that we should consider.

  954. But,

  955. I want to spend

  956. a little bit of time

  957. because I don't want

  958. to just talk about that

  959. and then not actually

  960. acknowledge that there

  961. are people in this world

  962. that are genuinely

  963. facing persecution

  964. because of their decision

  965. to follow Jesus.

  966. The same Jesus

  967. that we follow

  968. and yet their life

  969. looks so different.

  970. There's a few organizations

  971. that I looked up.

  972. One's called Open Doors

  973. and another's called

  974. International Christian Concern

  975. and another called

  976. Voice of the Martyr

  977. where you hear about

  978. some stats

  979. about what's happening

  980. in the world

  981. right now

  982. with some people

  983. who are facing persecution.

  984. 388 million Christians

  985. are experiencing

  986. persecution.

  987. That's one in seven.

  988. One in seven people

  989. who have committed

  990. to follow Christ

  991. are facing trouble

  992. because of that decision

  993. alone.

  994. Over half of them

  995. are women

  996. and girls.

  997. A third of them

  998. a third of them

  999. are under the age

  1000. of 15.

  1001. A young person

  1002. who says

1003. I'm going to follow Jesus

  1004. even if it means

  1005. everything that it means.

1006. We don't have the privilege

1007. of that in Hong Kong.

  1008. But we should care

  1009. about it.

  1010. There's a nine-year-old girl

  1011. from Bangladesh

  1012. and actually

1013. I have young life colleagues

  1014. in Bangladesh

  1015. that are suffering

  1016. through this

  1017. where her family

  1018. is

  1019. a Christian

  1020. in a Muslim community

  1021. where they get surrounded

  1022. their house

  1023. gets surrounded

  1024. regularly

  1025. by people

  1026. telling them

  1027. you must go back

  1028. to Islam

  1029. and yet they stay.

  1030. They throw stones

  1031. into their house

  1032. and yet they stay.

  1033. And this nine-year-old girl

  1034. isn't allowed

  1035. into the school

  1036. in the local village

  1037. because her family

  1038. are Christian.

  1039. Nine years old.

  1040. That's Elysia's age.

  1041. But because of her

  1042. family's decision

  1043. she can't get

  1044. the safety

  1045. that she deserves.

  1046. But yet there are

  1047. people out there

  1048. who care for

  1049. these people.

  1050. So this organization

  1051. opened doors.

  1052. They go and create

  1053. communities

  1054. safe homes

  1055. for these families

  1056. who decide

  1057. to follow Jesus

  1058. where they can have

  1059. a place

  1060. where they can be.

  1061. And she describes

  1062. the church

  1063. as the only place

  1064. where I am not

  1065. alone.

  1066. 4,847

  1067. Christians

  1068. were killed

  1069. for their faith

  1070. this last year.

  1071. Nearly 5,000

  1072. Christians.

  1073. Simply because

  1074. they refused

  1075. to deny Christ

  1076. they lost

  1077. their lives.

  1078. 13 people

  1079. a day.

  1080. 4,700

  1081. were detained

  1082. without trial

  1083. and arrested.

  1084. Last September

  1085. in a court

  1086. in Iran

  1087. five people

  1088. were sentenced

  1089. to eight years

  1090. in prison

  1091. for simply

  1092. just attending

  1093. church

  1094. and being part

  1095. of a prayer

  1096. meeting online.

  1097. And that was it.

  1098. 3,000 people

  1099. kidnapped

  1100. every year

  1101. because of

  1102. their Christian

  1103. faith.

  1104. I talked

  1105. a few months

  1106. ago

  1107. about the

  1108. situation

  1109. in Nigeria

  1110. where in November

  1111. 300 school kids

  1112. were taken

  1113. away.

  1114. a couple

  1115. weeks ago

  1116. two church

  1117. services

  1118. were raided.

  1119. 172

  1120. people

  1121. who were

  1122. worshipping

  1123. around the

  1124. size of

  1125. this group

  1126. right here

  1127. kidnapped

  1128. because they

  1129. were worshipping

  1130. Jesus.

  1131. What do we

  1132. do with that?

  1133. The story

  1134. shared by

  1135. International

  1136. Christian

  1137. Concern

  1138. about a

  1139. pastor

  1140. in Central

  1141. Asia

  1142. ultimately

  1143. it was

  1144. released

  1145. but his

  1146. wife shared

  1147. this story

  1148. where when

  1149. he was in

  1150. prison

  1151. his story

  1152. was heard

  1153. and people

  1154. around the

  1155. world

  1156. followers of

  1157. Christ

  1158. around the

  1159. world

  1160. would write

  1161. letters to

  1162. him

  1163. to try

  1164. and encourage

  1165. him.

  1166. He didn't

  1167. get a

  1168. single one

  1169. because the

  1170. prison officers

  1171. would just

  1172. not let him

  1173. read them.

  1174. But they

  1175. still ended

  1176. up changing

  1177. his life

  1178. because one

  1179. day

  1180. one prison

  1181. officer

  1182. was having

  1183. a bad

  1184. day

  1185. and was

  1186. beating

  1187. him

  1188. and as

  1189. he was

  1190. beating

  1191. him

  1192. he said

  1193. you are

  1194. so annoying

  1195. do you

  1196. know how

  1197. many letters

  1198. I have to

  1199. throw away

  1200. of yours

  1201. every day?

  1202. Oh my

  1203. goodness

  1204. that lit a

  1205. fire in

  1206. this pastor's

  1207. heart because

  1208. he's like I

  1209. don't need to

  1210. read those

  1211. letters.

  1212. There are

  1213. people who

  1214. remember me

  1215. outside.

  1216. I don't

  1217. have to face

  1218. that kind

  1219. of persecution.

  1220. I don't

  1221. think you do

  1222. either.

  1223. But my

  1224. fear is

  1225. that then

  1226. causes my

  1227. faith to

  1228. be stale.

  1229. It doesn't

  1230. need to look

  1231. so extreme

  1232. as I was

  1233. having a

  1234. conversation

  1235. with Anton

  1236. the other

  1237. day.

  1238. Often even

  1239. talking to

  1240. someone who

  1241. doesn't share

  1242. the same

  1243. faith as

  1244. you,

  1245. sharing the

  1246. gospel with

  1247. them,

  1248. that forces

  1249. something out

  1250. of you.

  1251. That causes

  1252. you to

  1253. double down

  1254. in your

  1255. faith.

  1256. Do I

  1257. really

  1258. believe this?

  1259. Because if I

  1260. don't share

  1261. it, then do I

  1262. really believe

  1263. it?

  1264. Because the

  1265. very nature

  1266. of what I

  1267. believe is

  1268. that I

  1269. must share

  1270. it.

  1271. So if I

  1272. don't share

  1273. it, that

  1274. means I

  1275. don't know

  1276. if I truly

  1277. believe it.

  1278. But the

  1279. moment I

  1280. do share

  1281. it, then

  1282. it forces

  1283. me to

  1284. decide, do

  1285. I actually

  1286. believe this?

  1287. It doesn't

  1288. mean I have

  1289. to answer

  1290. every single

  1291. question right,

  1292. but it does

  1293. mean that I

  1294. care enough

  1295. about this,

  1296. I believe

  1297. enough in

  1298. this, and

  1299. I am

  1300. willing not

  1301. to put my

  1302. life on the

  1303. line, but

  1304. at least to

  1305. put my

  1306. friendship in

  1307. an awkward

  1308. place for a

  1309. few minutes

  1310. where I can

  1311. ask them,

  1312. hey, do you

  1313. this to

  1314. varying degrees

  1315. of success

  1316. and consistency?

  1317. But that's my

  1318. conviction that

  1319. I'm growing in

  1320. myself, going

  1321. this is something

  1322. that I must do.

  1323. I was sharing

  1324. with my life

  1325. group a couple

  1326. weeks ago, this

  1327. idea of, actually,

  1328. how can we not

  1329. be hypocrites?

  1330. How do we be

  1331. people who are

  1332. willing at any

  1333. moment to share

  1334. the faith?

  1335. And I was

  1336. sharing with

  1337. them an epic

  1338. fail that I

  1339. had the other

  1340. day.

  1341. The other day I

  1342. was playing

  1343. basketball with

  1344. a group of

  1345. friends, and if

  1346. you know me

  1347. when I'm playing

  1348. basketball, I'm

  1349. not Pastor James,

  1350. I'm just playing

  1351. basketball.

  1352. And I don't

  1353. really want to

  1354. talk to people

  1355. about Jesus

  1356. when I'm just

  1357. doing something

  1358. like my hobby.

  1359. And I met

  1360. this person,

  1361. spoke to them,

  1362. and often they

  1363. asked me, oh,

  1364. so what do you

  1365. do?

  1366. And then I

  1367. say, I'm a

  1368. pastor.

  1369. And then I

  1370. said, I'm

  1371. playing basketball

  1372. right now.

  1373. But all I

  1374. could eke out

  1375. of me was,

  1376. well, do you

  1377. go to church?

  1378. And he said,

  1379. oh, no, I

  1380. don't go to

  1381. church.

  1382. And then there

  1383. was like five

  1384. seconds of just

  1385. silence there.

  1386. Because I was

  1387. like, I don't

  1388. want to engage

  1389. in this.

  1390. I've already

  1391. just met him.

  1392. We're just

  1393. about to go

  1394. back on the

  1395. court.

  1396. And then I

  1397. chickened out.

  1398. I was like,

  1399. oh.

  1400. Afterwards, I

  1401. sat in my

  1402. car and I

  1403. just felt the

  1404. crushing of the

  1405. Holy Spirit

  1406. going, wow.

  1407. I'm not here to

  1408. guilt trip myself

  1409. and say every

  1410. time I speak to

  1411. someone, every

  1412. waitress, every

  1413. clerk, I must

  1414. talk to them

  1415. about Jesus.

  1416. But what I'm

  1417. saying is, do

  1418. we follow the

  1419. convictions, do

  1420. we follow the

  1421. opportunities that

  1422. the Lord gives

  1423. us?

  1424. So when there

  1425. is a moment

  1426. where someone

  1427. engages us with

  1428. the faith or

  1429. has an opening

  1430. where we can

  1431. talk about it,

  1432. are we willing

  1433. to talk about

  1434. it?

  1435. So fast

  1436. forward to

  1437. yesterday, I

  1438. was at a

  1439. birthday dinner

  1440. with a friend

  1441. and the theme

  1442. was just

  1443. Midwest Texan

  1444. cowboy thing.

  1445. So I'm sat

  1446. at the dinner

  1447. table next to

  1448. two people who

  1449. I don't know

  1450. in my cowboy

  1451. hat and then

  1452. the same question

  1453. comes up, oh

  1454. hi, I'm James,

  1455. what do you do?

  1456. I say, well,

  1457. guess.

  1458. And no one

  1459. ever can guess.

  1460. They usually just

  1461. go with mafia.

  1462. And then I

  1463. say, well, I'm a

  1464. pastor.

  1465. Do you go to

  1466. church?

  1467. Have you been to

  1468. church?

  1469. And the woman

  1470. just,

  1471. starts crying.

  1472. Just disclaimer

  1473. here, nothing

  1474. that I did.

  1475. Good, good

  1476. or bad.

  1477. Ironically, I

  1478. was sat, she

  1479. was on one side

  1480. and her husband

  1481. on the other

  1482. side.

  1483. So after that

  1484. happened, I

  1485. turned to him

  1486. and I was

  1487. like, I'm

  1488. really sorry.

  1489. Your wife is

  1490. crying.

  1491. But I say

  1492. that not in a

  1493. bad way either.

  1494. I'm saying

  1495. actually, it's

  1496. not even me

  1497. that does it.

  1498. I don't have

  1499. to do that

  1500. much.

  1501. It's the

  1502. Holy Spirit

  1503. that's doing

  1504. and then in

  1505. the rest of

  1506. the evening

  1507. I got to

  1508. hear this

  1509. beautiful story

  1510. how this

  1511. couple who

  1512. don't know

  1513. Christ are

  1514. being drawn

  1515. into his

  1516. presence.

  1517. And that

  1518. being sat

  1519. randomly next

  1520. to a pastor

  1521. was what

  1522. tips them

  1523. over.

  1524. I did

  1525. nothing.

  1526. Good or bad.

  1527. I was just

  1528. being obedient.

  1529. I was just

  1530. learning from

  1531. my mistake.

  1532. Not my mistake

  1533. from last week.

  1534. I think that's

  1535. all we need

  1536. to do.

  1537. There's

  1538. another

  1539. gentleman in

  1540. the Czech

  1541. Republic

  1542. who serves

  1543. in Sudan

  1544. trying to

  1545. share the

  1546. gospel.

  1547. They were

  1548. both imprisoned,

  1549. ended up

  1550. becoming best

  1551. friends.

  1552. There would

  1553. be stories

  1554. about prisoners

  1555. separated by a

  1556. wall,

  1557. preaching to

  1558. each other

  1559. by tapping

  1560. on the wall

  1561. and communicating

  1562. through Morse

  1563. code,

  1564. encouraging

  1565. each other

  1566. in the

  1567. faith.

  1568. And just

  1569. in case you

  1570. feel as though

  1571. all those

  1572. were years

  1573. ago,

  1574. the ICC

  1575. reported

  1576. February 26,

  1577. so a couple

  1578. weeks ago,

  1579. a mob of

  1580. Hindu

  1581. nationalists in

  1582. central India

  1583. attacked a

  1584. Christian family

  1585. after the

  1586. family refused

  1587. to deny

  1588. Christ.

  1589. The family

  1590. lost their

  1591. home and

  1592. their belongings

  1593. during the

  1594. attack,

  1595. forcing them

  1596. to live

  1597. on the

  1598. streets.

  1599. 200 radical

  1600. Hindus

  1601. surrounded the

  1602. house and

  1603. attempted to

  1604. force Ramsey's

  1605. family to

  1606. deny Jesus

  1607. and reconvert

  1608. to Hinduism.

  1609. The furious

  1610. mob burst

  1611. into the

  1612. home,

  1613. threw the

  1614. family's

  1615. food and

  1616. belongings

  1617. into the

  1618. street,

  1619. and yet

  1620. the family

  1621. chose to

  1622. remain in

  1623. Christ.

  1624. Last night,

  1625. all six

  1626. children and

  1627. my wife

  1628. slept in

  1629. the rubble

  1630. with no

  1631. roof.

  1632. God gave

  1633. us courage

  1634. to come

  1635. thus far.

  1636. We hope

  1637. that God

  1638. will continue

  1639. to strengthen

  1640. us to

  1641. remain faithful

  1642. to him.

  1643. What do

  1644. we do

  1645. with that?

  1646. Apart from

  1647. go to God

  1648. and give

  1649. thanks,

  1650. okay,

  1651. in this

  1652. current

  1653. moment,

  1654. in this

  1655. current

  1656. season in

  1657. our lives,

  1658. we are

  1659. in safety.

  1660. But Lord,

  1661. what is it

  1662. that you

  1663. want me

  1664. to do

  1665. where I

  1666. can go

  1667. out of

  1668. my comfort

  1669. zones to

  1670. share the

  1671. good news?

  1672. The good

  1673. news that

  1674. led me from

  1675. being dead

  1676. to now

  1677. being alive.

  1678. The good

  1679. news that

  1680. led me from

  1681. first being

  1682. blind but

  1683. now seeing.

  1684. And if

  1685. I don't

  1686. feel that

  1687. conviction,

  1688. God,

  1689. can you

  1690. remind me

  1691. again of

  1692. my lost

  1693. state?

  1694. We get

  1695. so comfortable

  1696. and so

  1697. cushy here

  1698. when God

  1699. pours blessings

  1700. out on us

  1701. as we think

  1702. we deserve

  1703. them,

  1704. that we're

  1705. entitled to

  1706. them.

  1707. The friendship

  1708. of suffering

  1709. that Paul

  1710. goes through

  1711. from city

  1712. to city.

  1713. And what's

  1714. his ultimate

  1715. comfort?

  1716. His ultimate

  1717. comfort is

  1718. that he

  1719. has a

  1720. Christ,

  1721. a Lord

  1722. that is

  1723. willing to

  1724. sit in

  1725. the mud

  1726. with him.

  1727. In Acts

  1728. 9 when

  1729. Jesus meets

  1730. Paul,

  1731. Saul at

  1732. the time

  1733. and says,

  1734. why are

  1735. you persecuting

  1736. me?

  1737. Why are

  1738. you hurting

  1739. me?

  1740. But now

  1741. I'm going to

  1742. choose you.

  1743. You are

  1744. going to be

  1745. my instrument

  1746. and you

  1747. are going

  1748. to suffer

  1749. for my

  1750. namesake.

  1751. Jesus

  1752. himself when

  1753. he was

  1754. in the

  1755. garden

  1756. of

  1757. Gethsemane.

  1758. What does

  1759. he need?

  1760. Friends.

  1761. Stay here

  1762. with me.

  1763. Keep watch

  1764. with me.

  1765. I'm about

  1766. to do

  1767. something

  1768. that is

  1769. going to

  1770. be so

  1771. painful.

  1772. Blood

  1773. is going

  1774. to come

  1775. through

  1776. my pores.

  1777. please

  1778. stay

  1779. with me.

  1780. Jesus

  1781. willingly

  1782. suffering

  1783. for us.

  1784. Willingly

  1785. sitting in

  1786. the mud

  1787. with us.

  1788. Philippians 2

  1789. who though

  1790. was in

  1791. the image

  1792. of God

  1793. did not

  1794. count God

  1795. the equality

  1796. that he had.

  1797. He emptied

  1798. himself.

  1799. What is

  1800. that?

  1801. We

  1802. translate it

  1803. as Jesus

  1804. the Prince

  1805. of Heaven

  1806. was willing

  1807. to sit

  1808. in the mud

  1809. with us.

  1810. That's

  1811. what keeps

  1812. us going.

  1813. That's

  1814. what kept

  1815. Paul going.

  1816. And then

  1817. later in

  1818. John 15

  1819. we see

  1820. Jesus say

  1821. the greatest

  1822. example of

  1823. love is

  1824. when someone

  1825. is willing

  1826. to lay

  1827. down their

  1828. lives for

  1829. their friend.

  1830. And now

  1831. I call you

  1832. my friends.

  1833. And I've

  1834. told you

  1835. everything that

  1836. I know.

  1837. I've given

  1838. you everything

  1839. that I have.

  1840. Paul had

  1841. the strength

  1842. to do that

  1843. for others

  1844. because Christ

  1845. did that

  1846. for him.

  1847. but then

  1848. he calls

  1849. us to

  1850. do the

  1851. same.

  1852. Some of

  1853. us may

  1854. be called

  1855. into

  1856. dangerous

  1857. parts

  1858. of the

  1859. world.

  1860. And just

  1861. before you

  1862. go,

  1863. oh,

  1864. that's

  1865. such a

  1866. far-fetched

  1867. thing.

  1868. I was

  1869. the same

  1870. as you

  1871. for a

  1872. while

  1873. until I

  1874. met

  1875. colleagues

  1876. who were

  1877. literally

  1878. serving in

  1879. some of

  1880. these

  1881. places.

  1882. And it

  1883. just

  1884. completely

  1885. broke my

  1886. perspective

  1887. on what

  1888. I think

  1889. I'm

  1890. going

  1891. through

  1892. here.

  1893. But he

  1894. calls

  1895. each of

  1896. us

  1897. friends

  1898. and he

  1899. calls

  1900. each

  1901. of

  1902. us

  1903. to

  1904. go

  1905. and

  1906. lay

  1907. down

  1908. our

  1909. lives

  1910. for

  1911. someone

  1912. else.

  1913. And often

  1914. it doesn't

  1915. even need

  1916. to be

  1917. our

  1918. lives.

  1919. It just

  1920. needs

  1921. to be

  1922. that

  1923. conversation

  1924. that we

  1925. need

  1926. to

  1927. have.

  1928. It

  1929. actually

  1930. just

  1931. means

  1932. we

  1933. need

  1934. to

  1935. lay

  1936. down

  1937. our

  1938. egos

  1939. and

  1940. our

  1941. fears

  1942. and

  1943. our

  1944. insecurities.

  1945. That's

  1946. all we

  1947. need

  1948. to

  1949. do.

  1950. Can

  1951. we

  1952. do

  1953. go

  1954. and

  1955. have

  1956. an

  1957. awkward

  1958. conversation

  1959. with

  1960. someone

  1961. and

  1962. literally

  1963. say

  1964. we're

  1965. going

  1966. to

  1967. make

  1968. it

  1969. awkward.

  1970. Well,

  1971. don't

  1972. deliberately

  1973. do,

  1974. but be

  1975. prepared

  1976. for it

  1977. to be

  1978. awkward

  1979. and

  1980. to

  1981. be

  1982. okay.

  1983. Why?

  1984. Because

  1985. we

  1986. believe

  1987. that

  1988. this

  1989. matters.

  1990. This

  1991. world

  1992. is in

  1993. deep

  1994. need

  1995. of

  1996. people

  1997. who

  1998. are

  1999. willing

  2000. to

  2001. share

  2002. a

  2003. different

  2004. message.

  2005. We

  2006. turn on

  2007. the

  2008. news

  2009. and

  2010. we

  2011. see

  2012. all

  2013. the

  2014. different

  2015. warfare

  2016. that's

  2017. happening

  2018. around

  2019. the

  2020. world.

  2021. The

  2022. world

  2023. is

  2024. in

  2025. deep

  2026. need

  2027. of

  2028. a

  2029. different

  2030. message.

  2031. This

  2032. week

  2033. we've

  2034. been

  2035. helping

  2036. MJ

  2037. familiarize

  2038. his new

  2039. school.

  2040. part of

  2041. that

  2042. is that

  2043. the

  2044. parent

  2045. gets

  2046. to sit

  2047. in

  2048. this

  2049. classroom

  2050. for the

  2051. day

  2052. with

  2053. them.

  2054. And

  2055. so

  2056. this

  2057. week

  2058. my

  2059. office

  2060. was

  2061. this

  2062. classroom

  2063. filled

  2064. with

  2065. two

  2066. year

  2067. old

  2068. toddlers.

  2069. And

  2070. there

  2071. was

  2072. one

  2073. scene

  2074. in

  2075. the

  2076. space

  2077. of

  2078. 15

  2079. minutes

  2080. I

  2081. witnessed

  2082. three

  2083. different

  2084. kids

  2085. slap

  2086. each

  2087. other

  2088. around

  2089. the

  2090. face.

  2091. Literally

  2092. no

  2093. reason.

  2094. Unsolicited.

  2095. Literally

  2096. because they

  2097. felt like

  2098. it.

  2099. And I

  2100. said

  2101. wow.

  2102. And

  2103. then of

  2104. course

  2105. once one

  2106. gets

  2107. slapped

  2108. the

  2109. other

  2110. stands

  2111. up

  2112. and

  2113. then

  2114. turns

  2115. around

  2116. and

  2117. tries

  2118. to

  2119. slap

  2120. them

  2121. back.

  2122. Right?

  2123. And

  2124. then I

  2125. sat

  2126. there

  2127. as I

  2128. was

  2129. reading

  2130. the

  2131. BBC

  2132. news

  2133. and I

  2134. was

  2135. like

  2136. oh

  2137. this

  2138. classroom

  2139. looks

  2140. exactly

  2141. the same

  2142. as the

  2143. world

  2144. leaders

  2145. that we

  2146. have

  2147. right

  2148. now.

  2149. I'm

  2150. sat in

  2151. the same

  2152. place

  2153. watching

  2154. the same

  2155. things

  2156. happen.

  2157. And the

  2158. fellowship

  2159. has been

  2160. going through

  2161. the book

  2162. of

  2163. Genesis

  2164. and you

  2165. see from

  2166. the very

  2167. beginning

  2168. people

  2169. just

  2170. fighting

  2171. constantly.

  2172. The world

  2173. is in

  2174. deep need

  2175. of a

  2176. different

  2177. message.

  2178. And what

  2179. is that

  2180. message?

  2181. That message

  2182. is that

  2183. would we

  2184. turn the

  2185. other

  2186. cheek?

  2187. That

  2188. message

  2189. doesn't

  2190. feel

  2191. comfortable.

  2192. That

  2193. message

  2194. will often

  2195. lead to

  2196. our

  2197. pain.

  2198. But I

  2199. find

  2200. comfort

  2201. and I

  2202. pray that

  2203. you will

  2204. find

  2205. comfort

  2206. in the

  2207. one we

  2208. professed

  2209. to

  2210. follow

  2211. went

  2212. through

  2213. that

  2214. pain

  2215. and suffered

  2216. that

  2217. pain

  2218. for us.

  2219. Knowing

  2220. that

  2221. whatever

  2222. can

  2223. happen

  2224. to

  2225. us

  2226. in

  2227. this

  2228. side

  2229. of

  2230. eternity

  2231. remains

  2232. on

  2233. this

  2234. side

  2235. but there

  2236. is

  2237. something

  2238. that

  2239. is

  2240. far

  2241. greater

  2242. that

  2243. awaits

  2244. all

  2245. of

  2246. us.

  2247. Would

  2248. we

  2249. commit

  2250. to

  2251. having

  2252. the

  2253. posture

  2254. of

  2255. resolve

  2256. like

  2257. Paul?

  2258. Would

  2259. we

  2260. commit

  2261. to

  2262. having

  2263. the

  2264. posture

  2265. of

  2266. humility

  2267. and

  2268. care

  2269. like

  2270. his

  2271. friends?

  2272. Would

  2273. we

  2274. commit

  2275. to

  2276. having

  2277. the

  2278. posture

  2279. to

  2280. be

  2281. there

  2282. for

  2283. each

  2284. other

  2285. to

  2286. sit

  2287. with

  2288. each

  2289. other

  2290. in

  2291. the

  2292. mud?

  2293. My

  2294. final

  2295. thing

  2296. that

  2297. I

  2298. was

  2299. blessed

  2300. with

  2301. today

  2302. was

  2303. before

  2304. this

  2305. message

  2306. before

  2307. this

  2308. service

  2309. my head

  2310. was all

  2311. over the

  2312. place

  2313. and I

  2314. needed a

  2315. little

  2316. place

  2317. to sit

  2318. I sat

  2319. down

  2320. and as

  2321. most of

  2322. us do

  2323. when we

  2324. sit down

  2325. wanting to

  2326. focus on

  2327. God

  2328. the next

  2329. thing that

  2330. we do

  2331. is that

  2332. we open

  2333. up our

  2334. WhatsApp

  2335. up

  2336. you guys

  2337. don't

  2338. do that

  2339. you guys

  2340. go straight

  2341. to the

  2342. Bible

  2343. okay

  2344. all right

  2345. cool

  2346. so I

  2347. opened up

  2348. my WhatsApp

  2349. and I

  2350. was like

  2351. procrastinate

  2352. for two

  2353. minutes

  2354. just to

  2355. make sure

  2356. everything's

  2357. set before

  2358. I spend

  2359. time with

  2360. God

  2361. I

  2362. opened it

  2363. up and

  2364. this

  2365. WhatsApp

  2366. group

  2367. that we

  2368. have

  2369. is called

  2370. Scripture

  2371. Club

  2372. 2.0

  2373. led by

  2374. our dear

  2375. Paul

  2376. over here

  2377. and I

  2378. was inspired

  2379. in that

  2380. moment

  2381. just to

  2382. open it

  2383. to have

  2384. a look

  2385. again

  2386. and

  2387. so what

  2388. we do

  2389. and how

  2390. Paul leads

  2391. us is that

  2392. we pick a

  2393. Bible verse

  2394. to memorize

  2395. each week

  2396. and then we

  2397. just try and

  2398. memorize it

  2399. and then we

  2400. actually voice

  2401. record it

  2402. into the

  2403. group

  2404. and I

  2405. don't do

  2406. this every

  2407. week

  2408. Paul

  2409. but this

  2410. week I

  2411. just played

  2412. your one

  2413. for two

  2414. minutes

  2415. he's

  2416. memorized

  2417. chapter 5

  2418. verse 1

  2419. to 24

  2420. and he's

  2421. just practicing

  2422. and you

  2423. hear him

  2424. just doing

  2425. it

  2426. and I

  2427. share it

  2428. not to

  2429. puff him

  2430. up

  2431. because his

  2432. ego is

  2433. already

  2434. big enough

  2435. and his

  2436. head's

  2437. big enough

  2438. but it

  2439. blessed me

  2440. so much

  2441. this morning

  2442. because he

  2443. recited through

  2444. a sermon

  2445. the most

  2446. powerful

  2447. sermon

  2448. in the book

  2449. of Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2450. chapter 5

  2451. and he lists

  2452. the Beatitudes

  2453. and it finishes

  2454. with

  2455. blessed are

  2456. those who

  2457. are persecuted

  2458. for righteousness

  2459. sake

  2460. for theirs

  2461. is the

  2462. kingdom

  2463. of heaven

  2464. blessed

  2465. are you

  2466. when others

  2467. revile you

  2468. and persecute

  2469. you and utter

  2470. all kinds

  2471. of evil

  2472. against you

  2473. falsely

  2474. on my

  2475. account

  2476. rejoice

  2477. and be

  2478. glad

  2479. for your

  2480. reward is

  2481. great in

  2482. heaven

  2483. for so

  2484. they persecuted

  2485. the prophets

  2486. who were

  2487. before you

  2488. Jesus

  2489. says

  2490. those of

  2491. us

  2492. who

  2493. step

  2494. out

  2495. to share

  2496. the good

  2497. news

  2498. to turn

  2499. the other

  2500. cheek

  2501. and to

  2502. sit in

  2503. the mud

  2504. with those

  2505. who are in

  2506. need of a

  2507. saviour

  2508. blessed are

  2509. you

  2510. you talk about

  2511. all the

  2512. martyrs and all

  2513. those who are

  2514. imprisoned

  2515. they're not

  2516. doing it just

  2517. to cause

  2518. themselves

  2519. pain

  2520. because they

  2521. love pain

  2522. they do it

  2523. because they

  2524. see a glory

  2525. that far

  2526. outweighs

  2527. the pain

  2528. they're

  2529. experiencing

  2530. a love

  2531. that far

  2532. outweighs

  2533. the hurt

  2534. a love

  2535. that covers

  2536. a multitude

  2537. of sins

  2538. a love

  2539. that drives

  2540. out fear

  2541. there's a

  2542. new way

  2543. to live

  2544. and it's

  2545. the Jesus

  2546. way

  2547. would we

  2548. step out

  2549. of here

  2550. and be

  2551. committed to

  2552. following

  2553. the ways

  2554. of Jesus

  2555. regardless of

  2556. response

  2557. regardless of

  2558. outcome

  2559. regardless of

  2560. consequence

  2561. let us pray

  2562. Jesus

  2563. thank you

  2564. for

  2565. the gift

  2566. of friendship

  2567. thank you

  2568. even for

  2569. the gift

  2570. of suffering

  2571. when it is

  2572. for your

  2573. namesake

  2574. when it is

  2575. for your

  2576. righteousness

  2577. Lord would you

  2578. finish by

  2579. speaking to

  2580. each of us

  2581. would you give us

  2582. our instructions

  2583. for where

  2584. we must go

  2585. who we must

  2586. engage with

  2587. forgive us when we

  2588. live in fear

  2589. forgive us when we

  2590. live in shame

  2591. forgive us when we

  2592. live in pride

  2593. Lord would you show

  2594. us how to live

  2595. in a new way

  2596. in your way

  2597. yeah thank you

  2598. Lord thank you

  2599. Lord that

  2600. that you died

  2601. for us

  2602. and because of

  2603. that we

  2604. are able to

  2605. yeah just

  2606. be able to share

  2607. the gospel to

  2608. others Lord

  2609. it is a news

  2610. that is worth

  2611. sharing Lord

  2612. one that

  2613. we can just

  2614. place above

  2615. all other

  2616. things Lord

  2617. one that we

  2618. can

  2619. forego our

  2620. egos

  2621. forego our

  2622. pride

  2623. our

  2624. what we

  2625. are suffering

  2626. and going

  2627. through Lord

  2628. so I just

  2629. pray that as we

  2630. go forth this

  2631. week that we

  2632. will be able to

  2633. pick up the

  2634. opportunities where

  2635. we get to share

  2636. the gospel with

  2637. others Lord

  2638. may we be

  2639. obedient may we

  2640. be responsive to

  2641. the Holy Spirit

  2642. to the prompting

  2643. of you

  2644. yeah so that we

  2645. could we can

  2646. further your

  2647. kingdom

  2648. we thank you

  2649. Lord

  2650. in Jesus

  2651. name we pray

  2652. amen

  2653. you
