  1. As we sit, let's bow our heads and pray together.

  2. Our loving Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for your word.

  3. ! Our loving Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for your word.

  4. ! And we thank you that the Lord Jesus taught that your word is truth.

  5. And Father, he claimed that it would be your truth that would set us free.

  6. And so we ask now for your people gathered.

  7. That we might discern your truth.

  8. And your truth would indeed free us.

  9. That we might become the people, not that we want to be, Lord, but the people you would like us to be.

  10. And we pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

  11. I want to preach on a verse from the reading that Grace read to us.

  12. The disciples decided they would go on a fishing trip.

  13. And there were seven of them.

  14. And six of them joined Peter.

  15. And they got in the boat.

  16. And the rather depressing outcome of their first attempt to fish, we read about in verse 3.

  17. They went out and got into the boat.

  18. But that night, they caught nothing.

  19. I remember watching that series of television programs some years ago on the television about this bloke who had this mad idea for a set of documentaries.

  20. That he would go into the forest flung places of the planet.

  21. And what he would do is he would join some of the most primitive people.

  22. And he'd stay with them for a week.

  23. I mean, you can imagine what that was like.

  24. They nearly killed him, in fact.

  25. They gave him some hallucinogenic leaves to chew.

  26. And that nearly did for him.

  27. But I remember every night he came in front of camera.

  28. And he did a little video.

  29. And he would say what he'd been doing.

  30. And he said on this particular program.

  31. He said, I'm very excited.

  32. He said, tomorrow we're going fishing.

  33. He said, I'm really keen to find out how these people go about fishing.

  34. He said, and I saw them loading the canoes tonight.

  35. He said, I was a little confused because there's no nets and no fishing rods or anything like that.

  36. He said, so we'll wait and see.

  37. The next minute they're canoeing down the river.

  38. And suddenly there's a bloke at the front.

  39. And he's looking into the river.

  40. And he tells them to stop.

  41. By the way, these primitive people had a massive outboard motor on the back of their canoe.

  42. So they stop.

  43. And this guy sitting there.

  44. And you can tell he's very puzzled.

  45. Because there's nothing.

  46. There's no nets.

  47. And these are primitive people.

  48. And suddenly the elder in the boat pulled out a stick of dynamite.

  49. Lyt it and threw it in the river.

  50. And then they collected all the dead fish off the top.

  51. Well, fishing at the time of Peter was a slightly different business.

  52. Partly because, of course, dynamite hadn't been invented in that time.

  53. But just so you know this, I mean, it seems like when you're talking about overcoming failure, that at a certain level, going out fishing and not catching any fish is hardly life-changing.

  54. But then you've got to reckon that Peter's livelihood depended on what he caught.

  55. And fishermen today is exactly the same.

  56. You know, sometimes they take these big expensive boats out to fish and they don't catch a thing.

  57. It was like that then.

  58. But, of course, the consequences were probably more serious.

  59. Not only did they not have food for breakfast.

  60. But he wouldn't have had any fish left to sell.

  61. That would have fed into his livelihood.

  62. So it's a serious matter, fishing.

  63. And they went out.

  64. Now, in 1902, there was a scientist called Karl Popper.

  65. And he wasn't born a scientist, obviously, but he became a scientist.

  66. And as he got older, he became more interested in the philosophy of science.

  67. In particular, he became very interested in how do we know things are true.

  68. What is the nature of proof?

  69. And he came up with a theory.

  70. And the theory was based, I think he must have been a natural skeptic.

  71. Because his default in all matters of scientific truth were,

  72. you cannot trust human thinking because it's inevitably wrong.

  73. And so he developed this theory of proving.

  74. He said that we don't really prove anything.

  75. What we do is we find truth by consistently disproving things.

  76. It reminds you of that well-known adage by Thomas Edison,

  77. who invented the electric light bulb.

  78. And he tried and tried and tried to get this light bulb to work.

  79. And he could not do it.

  80. And a lot of his fellow inventors and scientists were saying to him,

  81. it's a flop, you know, give it up.

  82. It's a failure.

  83. And his conclusion was, I haven't failed a thousand times, he wrote.

  84. I haven't failed a thousand times.

  85. He said, what I've done is, I've discovered a thousand ways that this light bulb won't work.

  86. And of course, he invented it.

  87. Well, we're talking about overcoming failure today.

  88. And I have to say, I'm a little nervous about this.

  89. Partly because I suspect I may be in a classroom full of experts.

  90. There'll be very few of you in life who've not experienced failure.

  91. And it's not a great feeling.

  92. I mean, I'm not, you know, I don't want to talk to you about kind of superficial failures.

  93. Like, you know, I baked a cake and it didn't rise, that sort of stuff.

  94. I want to talk to you, and I'll come back to this in a moment,

  95. about the kind of more serious failures that can stay with us for life.

  96. And rob us of that fullness of life that Jesus promised in John 10 and verse 10.

  97. So, in the 1970s, early 1970s, when I was a young businessman,

  98. I tried to learn as much as I could.

  99. And I discovered that most of the books in the commercial area of leadership

  100. focused on success.

  101. One of the most famous books was written by a man called Jim Collins,

  102. and it was called From Good to Great.

  103. And Jim was a Harvard researcher, and his interest was,

  104. what's the difference between a good company and a great company?

  105. And through his research, he tried to isolate some factors,

  106. which he thought would make companies go from good to great.

  107. It's all about success.

  108. And then, round about the turn of this century,

  109. the kind of mood changed.

  110. I can't explain to you why the mood changed.

  111. I sort of suspect it's all to do with our kind of grievance, victim,

  112. slightly more aware of mental illness.

  113. But suddenly, people started to write leadership books about failure.

  114. failure.

  115. And there were very notes.

  116. There's a guy called Matthew Egan who wrote a book called The Failure Foundation.

  117. It actually made a foundation which talked about failure.

  118. failure.

  119. And then there was John Maxwell's famous book called Failing Forwards.

  120. I thought I might write a book at one point about the Church of England called Failing Slowly,

  121. but I never got round to it.

  122. So, you've got these books on failure.

  123. And of course, there's one big proviso.

  124. What's that?

  125. We will learn from our failures.

  126. And there's an element of truth in that.

  127. It's not guaranteed.

  128. But actually, it is true, isn't it,

  129. that if we can learn from our failures,

  130. we might actually get better at our endeavours.

  131. So, I want to talk to you about overcoming failure,

  132. and I want to do it from this passage that we have.

  133. I don't know if it could go up on the screen.

  134. I'm not quite sure about that.

  135. I don't understand technology.

  136. Visit to the doctors is a nightmare for me now.

  137. So, incidentally, these books on failure sold amazingly well.

  138. John Maxwell's book sold 31 million copies worldwide.

  139. I mean, unbelievable.

  140. So, as I said earlier,

  141. I don't want to talk to you about superficial failures.

  142. I'm not that worried about those of you whose cake didn't rise,

  143. or the gift that I carefully curated for my wife,

  144. which she truly hated.

  145. No more.

  146. And talking about a deeper, kind of more existential failure.

  147. What do I mean by that?

  148. Well, I mean, the very serious failures that some of you have gone through.

  149. Relationship failure.

  150. Always difficult.

  151. Marriage or parenting failure.

  152. Career failure.

  153. I mean, I know people who have failed,

  154. and unfortunately, it's defined the rest of their lives.

  155. Let me ask you a question.

  156. I mean, do you think that's God's intention?

  157. That we would fail,

  158. and that we would let it define us for the rest of our lives?

  159. I mean, you need to know that if you follow Jesus Christ,

  160. your primary identity is not dictated by your failures or your successes.

  161. It's dictated by the grace of God,

  162. who's called you to himself.

  163. So, I'm talking about these,

  164. and of course, oh my goodness,

  165. hands up, you know, I'm a PhD in this.

  166. I mean, spiritual failure.

  167. My willingness to unforgive.

  168. And yet, it was only a few moments ago that

  169. Tim encouraged us to pray the Lord's Prayer.

  170. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

  171. Well, what about disobedience?

  172. Would you put your hand up if I said,

  173. have you ever been disobedient in your walk with Jesus?

  174. I suspect there wouldn't be many of you.

  175. John chapter 14 and verse 15,

    John 14 chapter mention

  176. Jesus said,

  177. if you love me,

  178. you will obey my commandments.

  179. You will keep my commandments.

  180. I must say,

  181. I've always kind of wondered about that verse

  182. in relation to the assertion that God's love is unconditional.

  183. I mean, the word if is at the beginning of that sentence.

  184. If you love me,

  185. you will keep my commandments.

  186. Indifference.

  187. Or again,

  188. spiritual failure.

  189. I think this is a huge thing

  190. in the 21st century church.

  191. Indifference.

  192. I'm going to show up on Sunday

  193. and I'm going to make sure that the new vicar sees me.

  194. And I'm going to go home wherever I go

  195. for the next six days of the week.

  196. And somehow it doesn't seem to quite be the same.

  197. I am aware that I think the Western church has become,

  198. it's almost like we're sleepwalking some of the time.

  199. And God knows there's a work out there to be done.

  200. This is not just about getting a tick on the register, friends.

  201. This is about believing

  202. that our effort together with Christians across this town,

  203. Christians across this nation,

  204. our effort can change the world.

  205. But here's the point.

  206. If the effort's not there,

  207. it's unlikely that the change will be there.

  208. Remember that church in Laodicea

  209. in the book of Revelation

  210. and the risen Christ addresses the church

  211. in these words.

  212. I know your works.

  213. You're neither cold nor hot.

  214. Would that you were cold or hot

  215. because you are lukewarm.

  216. Because you are lukewarm,

  217. I will spit you out of my mouth.

  218. I didn't ever imagine that

  219. the risen Christ would develop the habit of spitting.

  220. But that's what he says.

  221. If you're sitting here thinking that

  222. if I warm the pews often enough,

  223. I'll get a gold watch at the end of it.

  224. Friend, with respect, you need to think again.

  225. So let's take a look at this passage

  226. and see what we might learn.

  227. The first thing I noticed about this passage

  228. is failure can make us lose focus.

  229. Verse 4 of chapter 21.

  230. We're told there that the disciples saw this person

  231. on the beach 100 yards away

  232. and they didn't recognise Jesus.

  233. See, I think this is what failure can do.

  234. I think if you are starting to define yourself

  235. by failure,

  236. Jesus is going to fall out of focus in your life.

  237. And I want to ask you,

  238. because this is very serious, frankly,

  239. that if you've not got Jesus in sharp focus,

  240. if he's not just your saviour but your Lord,

  241. then I think God might want to speak to you today.

  242. And I hope if he does,

  243. you won't just go home and put the oven on.

  244. But I hope you will think

  245. about what God might be saying to you.

  246. I know from the military

  247. that nobody who marches with a half-hearted army

  248. achieves anything very much.

  249. And half-heartedness within the congregation

  250. of Christ's faithful people

  251. will achieve similar results.

  252. I tell you this many times,

  253. and I'll tell you it again,

  254. I think about 23,000 people

  255. live in Clevedon.

  256. And I reckon,

  257. having done the rounds a bit,

  258. that maybe on any given Sunday

  259. there might be 800 to 1,000 people.

  260. I can't work out the maths on that.

  261. But could we agree,

  262. we could do better?

  263. The thing is,

  264. if you've lost focus on Jesus,

  265. honestly,

  266. it's not even going to matter to you.

  267. Our own little church

  268. and the friends we talk to,

  269. we love worshipping the Lord together.

  270. It's all so cosy.

  271. When you lose focus on Jesus,

  272. I think you don't just suffer that way,

  273. but actually what happens is

  274. your cutting edge as a Christian gets blunted.

  275. We need to rediscover our focus on Jesus

  276. and the likelihood is

  277. you're not going to be able to do that

  278. in your own strength.

  279. You will need the Holy Spirit

  280. to burn the idea

  281. that I am only a spiritual failure

  282. if I allow myself

  283. to lose focus on Jesus.

  284. The second thing is,

  285. I think this issue

  286. of failure,

  287. the difference between failure

  288. and success in this story

  289. was that they listened to Jesus.

  290. I mean,

  291. I did fishing when I was a boy.

  292. I mean,

  293. I never ever caught anything.

  294. And the bottom line is,

  295. I'm really glad I didn't

  296. because I was terrified.

  297. I didn't want to handle one

  298. to take it off the hook.

  299. So,

  300. you know,

  301. my fishing,

  302. but I didn't,

  303. I wasn't passionate enough

  304. about fishing

  305. to go out all night.

  306. Right?

  307. I never did that.

  308. I had other things to do at night

  309. rather than go fishing.

  310. But these,

  311. can you imagine,

  312. they've been out all night.

  313. All seven of them on this boat

  314. and they've not caught a thing.

  315. And there they are

  316. on the shore.

  317. I imagine they're not feeling great.

  318. And Jesus tells them

  319. that they must get in the boat.

  320. Sorry,

  321. they must cast their net again.

  322. You wouldn't blame them,

  323. would you,

  324. if there wasn't a discussion

  325. that went something like this?

  326. Who's this guy?

  327. Who is he to tell us?

  328. We're fishermen.

  329. We get it.

  330. Who's he?

  331. They listened to Jesus.

  332. Whom,

  333. at this stage,

  334. they hadn't really recognized.

  335. And they did

  336. what he said

  337. and they went out

  338. and they caught

  339. a massive trove of fish.

  340. 153 fish.

  341. I mean,

  342. that sounds like

  343. a good breakfast to me.

  344. and I assumed

  345. that there'd be

  346. some stuff left over

  347. for their breakfast.

  348. They listened to him.

  349. I tell you something,

  350. if you're besotted

  351. by your failure,

  352. which is

  353. a close bedfellow

  354. of being besotted

  355. about yourself,

  356. then it's unlikely

  357. that you will ever hear

  358. Jesus speak to you.

  359. Why?

  360. Because you're not

  361. really listening.

  362. I wonder

  363. if this morning

  364. in this church

  365. which has seen

  366. so much spiritual action

  367. over the years,

  368. I wonder if that same spirit

  369. who motivated

  370. that action

  371. is going to speak

  372. to you.

  373. speak, Lord,

  374. in the stillness

  375. while I think

  376. on thee.

  377. Maybe

  378. some of you

  379. should try it.

  380. Try just listening

  381. for God

  382. and at the end

  383. of this message

  384. I'll give you

  385. some silence

  386. in the hope

  387. that you might

  388. ask God

  389. to tell you

  390. what you need

  391. to know.

  392. The third thing

  393. is in

  394. verse 6.

  395. They didn't just

  396. listen to Jesus.

  397. They did

  398. what he asked

  399. them to do.

  400. I know

  401. these days

  402. that

  403. words like

  404. obedience

  405. and duty

  406. are not really

  407. terribly

  408. in vogue.

  409. But actually

  410. I can tell you

  411. this.

  412. I never met

  413. people who

  414. just went

  415. their own way

  416. in life

  417. and it ended

  418. well.

  419. one of the

  420. things that

  421. I found

  422. most difficult

  423. in the

  424. hundreds of

  425. funerals

  426. I've taken

  427. was that

  428. at one time

  429. in funerals

  430. we just sang

  431. hymns

  432. and then

  433. suddenly

  434. the crematorium

  435. or the cemetery

  436. got a

  437. stereo kit

  438. so people

  439. could choose

  440. what they

  441. wanted to

  442. have played.

  443. The most

  444. common song

  445. that people

  446. wanted played

  447. when I was

  448. a vicar

  449. was I

  450. did it

  451. my way

  452. Frank Sinatra

  453. and nobody

  454. would say

  455. that Frank's

  456. life

  457. ended well.

  458. So

  459. there is

  460. a response

  461. we're not

  462. going to be

  463. saved by

  464. being obedient

  465. that's God's

  466. grace

  467. but this

  468. book

  469. tells us

  470. how God

  471. wants us

  472. to live

  473. and I

  474. think we

  475. do well

  476. to heed

  477. that.

  478. And maybe

  479. one of the

  480. biggest failures

  481. I know

  482. it's true

  483. of my life

  484. is our

  485. failure

  486. in sin.

  487. And

  488. you know

  489. I mean

  490. I do

  491. some wrong

  492. stuff

  493. okay

  494. and I

  495. you know

  496. the best

  497. thing the

  498. devil

  499. succeeds

  500. with me

  501. is not

  502. taking it

  503. seriously

  504. enough.

  505. it's

  506. alright

  507. you know

  508. there are

  509. people who

  510. are worse

  511. than you

  512. mate

  513. might have

  514. to dredge

  515. the pit

  516. and think

  517. about Adolf

  518. Hitler

  519. and Attila

  520. the Hun

  521. but

  522. of course

  523. there are

  524. people who

  525. are worse

  526. than me

  527. but that's

  528. no excuse.

  529. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 18 chapter mention

  530. chapter 18

  531. the

  532. Jews

  533. are in

  534. exile

  535. in Babylon

  536. you may

  537. remember

  538. this

  539. that

  540. they had

  541. a massive

  542. problem

  543. and their

  544. problem was

  545. they would

  546. not accept

  547. responsibility

  548. for their

  549. own sin

  550. so they

  551. invented

  552. this kind

  553. of proverb

  554. and it

  555. went like

  556. this

  557. the fathers

  558. have eaten

  559. sour grapes

  560. and set

  561. the children's

  562. teeth on

  563. edge

  564. right

  565. it's a bit

  566. cryptic

  567. first time

  568. round

  569. isn't it

  570. but what it

  571. means is

  572. we're

  573. not in

  574. exile

  575. because of

  576. anything

  577. we've

  578. done

  579. it was

  580. all the

  581. fault

  582. of our

  583. forefathers

  584. I tell you

  585. I know

  586. from my

  587. forays

  588. into

  589. the world

  590. of

  591. counselling

  592. which

  593. generally

  594. is a

  595. great

  596. thing

  597. but

  598. I know

  599. that

  600. you know

  601. I've sat

  602. with a lot

  603. of people

  604. in my

  605. life

  606. who will

  607. not take

  608. responsibility

  609. responsibility

  610. and there's

  611. problems

  612. with that

  613. and one

  614. of the

  615. problems

  616. is

  617. if you

  618. refuse

  619. to take

  620. responsibility

  621. for your

  622. actions

  623. your thoughts

  624. your words

  625. you will

  626. never grow

  627. up

  628. right

  629. simple

  630. I think

  631. we grow

  632. when people

  633. give us

  634. responsibility

  635. and we

  636. take

  637. responsibility

  638. you have

  639. responsibility

  640. for your

  641. life

  642. you remember

  643. that story

  644. that Jesus

  645. told

  646. about

  647. the

  648. building

  649. of two

  650. houses

  651. right

  652. and both

  653. those houses

  654. looked

  655. exactly

  656. the same

  657. until

  658. the storm

  659. came

  660. friends I am

  661. looking out

  662. to see your

  663. faces

  664. I mean

  665. you look

  666. different to

  667. me

  668. but

  669. basically

  670. you know

  671. you look

  672. human

  673. mostly

  674. and

  675. Jesus

  676. the

  677. strap

  678. line

  679. of that

  680. was

  681. build

  682. your

  683. life

  684. on a

  685. great

  686. foundation

  687. he

  688. who

  689. hears

  690. these

  691. words

  692. of mine

  693. says

  694. Jesus

  695. and

  696. puts

  697. them

  698. into

  699. practice

  700. is

  701. like

  702. what

  703. a

  704. wise

  705. man

  706. a

  707. wise

  708. woman

  709. who

  710. built

  711. their

  712. house

  713. upon

  714. the

  715. rock

  716. that

  717. when

  718. failure

  719. came

  720. when

  721. the

  722. storm

  723. came

  724. the

  725. house

  726. stood

  727. firm

  728. see

  729. we don't

  730. just need

  731. to listen

  732. to Jesus

  733. we need

  734. at the

  735. same

  736. time

  737. to do

  738. what

  739. he

  740. tells

  741. us

  742. to do

  743. and

  744. the

  745. fourth

  746. thing

  747. we get

  748. from

  749. this

  750. story

  751. is

  752. persistence

  753. I

  754. wouldn't

  755. blame

  756. those

  757. disciples

  758. with you

  759. if

  760. they

  761. heard

  762. Jesus

  763. shout

  764. get

  765. out

  766. there

  767. again

  768. and

  769. cash

  770. your

  771. nets

  772. on

  773. the

  774. right

  775. and

  776. they

  777. shouted

  778. back

  779. yeah

  780. you know

  781. something

  782. I

  783. wouldn't

  784. want

  785. to

  786. repeat

  787. they

  788. didn't

  789. they

  790. did

  791. it

  792. and

  793. I

  794. want

  795. to

  796. say

  797. to

  798. you

  799. all

  800. my

  801. life

  802. certainly

  803. you know

  804. being

  805. on

  806. kind

  807. of

  808. senior

  809. teams

  810. of

  811. dioceses

  812. the

  813. thing

  814. that's

  815. troubled

  816. me

  817. most

  818. is

  819. we

  820. fail

  821. once

  822. and

  823. we

  824. give

  825. up

  826. we

  827. try

  828. something

  829. out

  830. number

  831. of

  832. churches

  833. I

  834. know

  835. you know

  836. they'll

  837. give

  838. a guy

  839. member

  840. of

  841. church

  842. not

  843. far

  844. from

  845. where

  846. I

  847. live

  848. and

  849. they

  850. decided

  851. they'd

  852. do

  853. a

  854. family

  855. service

  856. and

  857. try

  858. and

  859. attract

  860. families

  861. in

  862. they did

  863. it for

  864. three months

  865. and it

  866. didn't work

  867. that well

  868. and

  869. the

  870. church

  871. was

  872. you know

  873. I

  874. just

  875. like

  876. you know

  877. somebody

  878. said the

  879. church

  880. of

  881. England

  882. was the

  883. conservative

  884. party

  885. at

  886. prayer

  887. this

  888. was

  889. like

  890. the

  891. Derby

  892. and

  893. Joan

  894. club

  895. at

  896. prayer

  897. and

  898. then

  899. the

  900. vicar

  901. left

  902. and

  903. to be

  904. fair

  905. I

  906. think

  907. he

  908. was

  909. tired

  910. he

  911. left

  912. and

  913. a

  914. new

  915. guy

  916. came

  917. in

  918. we

  919. appointed

  920. this

  921. guy

  922. who

  923. I

  924. had

  925. known

  926. for

  927. a

  928. long

  929. while

  930. first

  931. thing

  932. he

  933. said

  934. is

  935. is

  936. there

  937. a

  938. family

  939. service

  940. well

  941. no

  942. you know

  943. there

  944. isn't

  945. he

  946. started

  947. it

  948. for

  949. three

  950. months

  951. nothing

  952. after

  953. two

  954. years

  955. suddenly

  956. the

  957. flood

  958. gates

  959. opened

  960. and

  961. they

  962. were

  963. dealing

  964. with

  965. hundreds

  966. certainly

  967. tens

  968. of new

  969. families

  970. see

  971. I

  972. think

  973. persistence

  974. is a

  975. big

  976. word

  977. in the

  978. Christian

  979. life

  980. in the

  981. New

  982. Testament

  983. remember

  984. Jesus

  985. was trying

  986. to teach

  987. his

  988. disciples

  989. about

  990. praying

  991. and he

  992. gave

  993. this

  994. extraordinary

  995. example

  996. he said

  997. suppose

  998. you're

  999. in bed

  1000. and somebody

  1001. comes hammering

  1002. on the

  1003. door at

  1004. midnight

  1005. right

  1006. I mean

  1007. that's

  1008. happened

  1009. to me

  1010. it's

  1011. not

  1012. fun

  1013. and

  1014. you know

  1015. kind of

  1016. what are you

  1017. going to

  1018. do

  1019. am I

  1020. going to

  1021. get

  1022. dressed

  1023. before I

  1024. go down

  1025. and put

  1026. a

  1027. dressing

  1028. gown

  1029. you know

  1030. all that

  1031. and

  1032. Jesus

  1033. says

  1034. you should

  1035. pray like

  1036. this

  1037. keep

  1038. hammering

  1039. on the

  1040. door

  1041. of

  1042. heaven

  1043. until

  1044. the

  1045. house owner

  1046. opens

  1047. the door

  1048. and hears

  1049. your

  1050. prayer

  1051. how many

  1052. of you

  1053. feel you

  1054. fail in

  1055. prayer

  1056. because you

  1057. prayed about

  1058. something a

  1059. couple of

  1060. times and

  1061. it's not

  1062. happened

  1063. think about

  1064. the friend

  1065. at

  1066. midnight

  1067. persistence

  1068. is a

  1069. very big

  1070. New

  1071. Testament

  1072. word

  1073. and we

  1074. do

  1075. well

  1076. to

  1077. learn

  1078. it

  1079. so

  1080. let me

  1081. conclude

  1082. because you're

  1083. feeling hungry

  1084. I want to

  1085. conclude by

  1086. saying

  1087. I really want to

  1088. speak

  1089. deep

  1090. into the

  1091. heart of

  1092. those of

  1093. you who've

  1094. got a

  1095. failure

  1096. had a

  1097. failure

  1098. in your

  1099. life

  1100. and it

  1101. defines

  1102. you

  1103. and you're

  1104. not sure

  1105. if there's

  1106. a way

  1107. that you

  1108. can process

  1109. that failure

  1110. and become

  1111. a bigger

  1112. and better

  1113. and more

  1114. grown up

  1115. person

  1116. because of

  1117. it

  1118. well I

  1119. want to

  1120. take issue

  1121. with you

  1122. I think

  1123. we're all

  1124. redeemable

  1125. I mean

  1126. we're

  1127. redeemable

  1128. in terms

  1129. of our

  1130. sin

  1131. but we're

  1132. redeemable

  1133. in terms

  1134. of our

  1135. mistakes

  1136. and our

  1137. failures

  1138. think for

  1139. a moment

  1140. about some

  1141. of the

  1142. heroes

  1143. of the

  1144. bible

  1145. Moses

  1146. right

  1147. within

  1148. Judaism

  1149. massive

  1150. kind of

  1151. image

  1152. and

  1153. revered

  1154. and

  1155. Moses

  1156. killed

  1157. a man

  1158. and then

  1159. he was

  1160. selected

  1161. to

  1162. lead the

  1163. people

  1164. out of

  1165. Israel

  1166. and then

  1167. he was

  1168. disobedient

  1169. by the

  1170. waters

  1171. of Meribah

  1172. wherever

  1173. they are

  1174. God

  1175. said to

  1176. him

  1177. speak

  1178. to this

  1179. rock

  1180. and

  1181. Moses

  1182. thought

  1183. I'm not

  1184. going to

  1185. do that

  1186. you know

  1187. you give

  1188. me this

  1189. rod

  1190. so he

  1191. hit the

  1192. rock

  1193. twice

  1194. and

  1195. it

  1196. had the

  1197. desired

  1198. effect

  1199. all the

  1200. water

  1201. flowed out

  1202. for the

  1203. Israelites

  1204. to drink

  1205. but because

  1206. of that

  1207. God

  1208. said

  1209. for your

  1210. disobedience

  1211. you will

  1212. never

  1213. enter the

  1214. promised

  1215. land

  1216. you think

  1217. about

  1218. King

  1219. David

  1220. another

  1221. greatly

  1222. revered

  1223. person

  1224. within

  1225. the

  1226. history

  1227. of

  1228. Judaism

  1229. I mean

  1230. David

  1231. started out

  1232. as a

  1233. shepherd

  1234. somehow

  1235. managed to

  1236. slaughter a

  1237. lion

  1238. then he

  1239. took on

  1240. Goliath

  1241. and killed

  1242. him

  1243. I mean

  1244. whichever way

  1245. you look

  1246. at it

  1247. still murder

  1248. he gets

  1249. recognised

  1250. by the

  1251. community

  1252. and

  1253. anointed

  1254. as king

  1255. and the

  1256. next

  1257. minute

  1258. he has

  1259. a fling

  1260. with a

  1261. woman

  1262. called

  1263. Bathsheba

  1264. part of

  1265. me wants

  1266. to say

  1267. but I'm

  1268. too polite

  1269. to say

  1270. it

  1271. how dare

  1272. you

  1273. define

  1274. yourself

  1275. by your

  1276. failure

  1277. look at

  1278. the raw

  1279. material

  1280. of God's

  1281. amazing

  1282. people

  1283. failure

  1284. after

  1285. failure

  1286. after

  1287. failure

  1288. you

  1289. know

  1290. anything

  1291. about

  1292. the

  1293. history

  1294. of

  1295. revival

  1296. you

  1297. know

  1298. anything

  1299. about

  1300. the

  1301. history

  1302. of

  1303. the

  1304. church

  1305. I

  1306. never

  1307. knew

  1308. a

  1309. church

  1310. I've

  1311. known

  1312. you know

  1313. I don't

  1314. know what

  1315. you make

  1316. of this

  1317. but I've

  1318. known a

  1319. lot of

  1320. mega

  1321. churches

  1322. spent

  1323. time

  1324. with

  1325. them

  1326. and

  1327. these

  1328. churches

  1329. interestingly

  1330. they have

  1331. one

  1332. common

  1333. feature

  1334. they

  1335. nearly

  1336. all

  1337. catastrophically

  1338. failed

  1339. at one

  1340. point

  1341. in their

  1342. history

  1343. but they

  1344. didn't

  1345. give up

  1346. and you

  1347. might feel

  1348. you have

  1349. catastrophically

  1350. failed

  1351. at some

  1352. point

  1353. in your

  1354. history

  1355. and you

  1356. have never

  1357. managed to

  1358. process it

  1359. listen

  1360. you need

  1361. to get

  1362. Jesus

  1363. in focus

  1364. you need

  1365. to listen

  1366. to him

  1367. not just

  1368. speak at

  1369. him all

  1370. the time

  1371. you need

  1372. to do

  1373. what he

  1374. tells you

  1375. to do

  1376. and that

  1377. means you

  1378. need to

  1379. familiarize

  1380. yourself

  1381. with his

  1382. word

  1383. and you

  1384. need to

  1385. develop

  1386. that amazing

  1387. new testament

  1388. characteristic

  1389. persistence

  1390. you make

  1391. a mistake

  1392. for God's

  1393. sake

  1394. please don't

  1395. give up

  1396. try and

  1397. learn from

  1398. him

  1399. and of

  1400. course

  1401. the reason

  1402. credited

  1403. to the

  1404. crowd in

  1405. Jerusalem

  1406. on Palm

  1407. Sunday

  1408. where they

  1409. were shouting

  1410. statements of

  1411. praise as

  1412. Jesus entered

  1413. the city

  1414. turned

  1415. into

  1416. hatred

  1417. and the

  1418. reason

  1419. that is

  1420. offered

  1421. as to

  1422. by the

  1423. mood of

  1424. the church

  1425. changed

  1426. is this

  1427. that they

  1428. thought Jesus

  1429. had come to

  1430. deliver them

  1431. from the

  1432. Roman

  1433. enemies

  1434. and the

  1435. crowd

  1436. on Palm

  1437. Sunday

  1438. couldn't

  1439. understand how

  1440. the Messiah

  1441. the great

  1442. political

  1443. and military

  1444. victor

  1445. ended up

  1446. being arrested

  1447. like you

  1448. when your

  1449. expectations

  1450. are let

  1451. down

  1452. they felt

  1453. angry

  1454. murderously

  1455. angry

  1456. and we're

  1457. in the

  1458. season of

  1459. Easter

  1460. which is

  1461. the most

  1462. amazing

  1463. reminder

  1464. that God

  1465. on a

  1466. cross

  1467. that looked

  1468. like a

  1469. failure

  1470. we celebrate

  1471. because the

  1472. cross is an

  1473. empty cross

  1474. because Jesus

  1475. is alive

  1476. someone say

  1477. amen

  1478. amen

  1479. Jesus is

  1480. alive

  1481. someone say

  1482. amen

  1483. amen

  1484. Jesus is

  1485. alive

  1486. amen

  1487. big deal

  1488. is

  1489. is it

  1490. going to

  1491. make a

  1492. big

  1493. difference

  1494. to you

  1495. are you

  1496. going to

  1497. make a

  1498. commitment

  1499. today

  1500. to get

  1501. past

  1502. your

  1503. failure

  1504. and start

  1505. to walk

  1506. yet more

  1507. closely

  1508. with him

  1509. and see

  1510. what happens

  1511. why don't

  1512. we pray

  1513. just in

  1514. the silence

  1515. now

  1516. let's

  1517. pray

  1518. that

  1519. if the

  1520. Holy Spirit

  1521. is speaking

  1522. straight to

  1523. us right

  1524. now

  1525. that

  1526. Lord

  1527. give us

  1528. big ears

  1529. that we

  1530. may hear

  1531. Lord

  1532. I'm

  1533. praying

  1534. for anybody

  1535. in the

  1536. house

  1537. today

  1538. who's

  1539. really

  1540. suffering

  1541. with this

  1542. problem

  1543. of allowing

  1544. past

  1545. failures

  1546. to identify

  1547. them

  1548. Lord

  1549. would you

  1550. please

  1551. heal them

  1552. of that

  1553. destructive

  1554. thought

  1555. now

  1556. Lord

  1557. I pray

  1558. for anybody

  1559. in this

  1560. church

  1561. who knows

  1562. that

  1563. their

  1564. failure

  1565. is

  1566. spiritual

  1567. that they

  1568. can't

  1569. forgive

  1570. that they

  1571. have

  1572. very little

  1573. passion

  1574. in their

  1575. soul

  1576. for the

  1577. cause of

  1578. Christ

  1579. in this

  1580. world

  1581. today

  1582. Lord

  1583. would you

  1584. please

  1585. wake us

  1586. up

  1587. help us

  1588. to see

  1589. in the

  1590. words of

  1591. the old

  1592. missionaries

  1593. there's a

  1594. work to

  1595. be done

  1596. and Father

  1597. I pray

  1598. that today

  1599. might make

  1600. a difference

  1601. not just

  1602. in our

  1603. lives

  1604. but in

  1605. our

  1606. church

  1607. and in

  1608. this

  1609. community

  1610. Lord

  1611. you know

  1612. how

  1613. difficult

  1614. we can

  1615. find it

  1616. here

  1617. to find

  1618. volunteers

  1619. Lord

  1620. would you

  1621. speak to

  1622. some

  1623. people

  1624. today

  1625. and

  1626. Lord

  1627. in line

  1628. with what

  1629. they might

  1630. be gifted

  1631. to do

  1632. would you

  1633. please help

  1634. them to

  1635. step

  1636. up

  1637. so

  1638. Father

  1639. we love

  1640. you

  1641. we bless

  1642. you

  1643. we thank

  1644. you that

  1645. you've given

  1646. us the

  1647. tools that

  1648. we don't

  1649. need to

  1650. define

  1651. ourselves

  1652. by failure

  1653. and now

  1654. in a few

  1655. moments of

  1656. silence

  1657. let's

  1658. together

  1659. listen to

  1660. God

  1661. that we

  1662. might hear

  1663. him

  1664. and having

  1665. heard him

  1666. we might

  1667. do what

  1668. he says

  1669. and we

  1670. pray these

  1671. things in

  1672. Jesus name

  1673. Amen
