  1. Do we have any math teachers here?

  2. Put your hand up. Don't be embarrassed.

  3. ! Mel, loud and proud.

  4. ! Mike is like, ah, yes, too.

  5. There's a few more here. Caleb's here.

  6. ! Ebenezer's here.

  7. Who's that? Locke, math teacher.

  8. I found myself saying something a few days ago.

  9. That was what I said when I was in year seven, which was, what's the point of Pythagoras?

  10. What's the meaning of it?

  11. And then my kids now say it because I'm trying to teach them.

  12. And thank goodness, Ebenezer is someone who also teaches math, who has been helping our kids.

  13. And they ask the same question, which is, what's the point of it?

  14. What are we supposed to learn?

  15. Mel, can you tell us, what's the point of Pythagoras?

  16. To torture us.

  17. Excellent. To torture us.

  18. And then I try and tell my kids, okay, well, the reason why we do Pythagoras and trigonometry

  19. is it helps us deal with problems.

  20. It helps us look at the world.

  21. And actually, if you look deep enough, the world, there's maths everywhere.

  22. And the reason why I say that is, you're about to find out,

  23. because we're about to read a passage of scripture that feels a lot like maths.

  24. And doesn't really feel as though there's really much point to it.

  25. Remember, we started in Genesis a couple of weeks ago.

  26. Genesis 1 was great.

  27. Like, he creates the world.

  28. And then he says it was good.

  29. He does it in six days.

  30. And then he has a rest for seven days.

  31. And then we talk about what it means to rest on the Sabbath day.

  32. And then Genesis 2, he zooms in to creating man and woman.

  33. And then what that is all about.

  34. And then Genesis 3 is when we see the fall.

  35. When they make a decision to not trust him and say,

  36. God, you know what?

  37. I'm just going to trust myself.

  38. I'm just going to figure this one out myself.

  39. And so then they go down that route.

  40. And they end up getting banished from the Garden of Eden.

  41. Genesis 3.

  42. And Genesis 4, as Gabe preached last week, was basically an extension of Genesis 3.

  43. That decision, that original decision, that original sin, then just continues to multiply.

  44. What started with a fruit now ends with a murder.

  45. And so that's Genesis chapter 4.

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  46. Genesis chapter 5, you could argue, is an extension of Genesis chapter 4.

Genesis 5 chapter mention Genesis 4 chapter mention

  47. And what you see here, if you open up your Bibles, and hopefully you've been handed one,

  48. is we're going to look and we're going to see a whole list.

  49. But one thing that we've been learning here as a congregation, as a flock, as followers of Christ,

  50. is how do we submit ourselves and humble ourselves under this book?

  51. When it makes sense, when it's nice, when it's Philippians 4, when it tells you not to be anxious,

  52. but in everything, in prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

  53. We love that because it's encouraging to us.

  54. So we put it onto a fridge magnet, and then it reminds us to not be anxious.

  55. Those are good verses.

  56. John 16 is a verse that says, oh, take heart.

  57. In this world you will have trouble.

  58. But I have overcome the world.

  59. Those are good ones.

  60. I don't know if I've ever seen a fridge magnet of Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  61. It's a tough one.

  62. But yet, as I was looking through this, and honestly, I'll confess right now,

  63. I was like, do we need to do this chapter?

  64. Maybe we should just skip it.

  65. And actually, the Lord convicted me, and actually Gabe convicted me.

  66. He's like, no, there's something there.

  67. And here it is.

  68. And we're going to do a sermon on this list.

  69. But before that, we're going to do something even better.

  70. We're going to stand for the word of the Lord in our reverence and awe for him.

  71. And I'm going to ask Christina.

  72. And who else have you picked, Christina?

  73. Bethany, to come and, oh, there we go, to come and read the word of God to us.

  74. Excellent.

  75. Perfect.

  76. Thank you.

  77. You got it, Beth.

  78. Okay.

  79. Just read, like, five verses at a time, okay?

  80. All right.

  81. Adam's Descendants to Noah.

  82. This is the book of the generations of Adam.

  83. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.

  84. Male and female, he created them.

  85. And he blessed them and named them man when they were created.

  86. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.

  87. The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

  88. Thus, all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

  89. When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.

  90. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  91. Thus, all the days of Seth were 90 years, and he died.

  92. And Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

  93. Thus, all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

  94. When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.

  95. Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  96. Thus, all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

  97. And when Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared.

  98. Mahalalel lived after he had fathered Jared 830 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  99. Thus, all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

  100. When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch.

  101. Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  102. Thus, all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

  103. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.

  104. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  105. Thus, all the days of Enoch were 365 years.

  106. Enoch walked with God, and he was not.

  107. For God took him.

  108. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.

  109. Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  110. Thus, all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

  111. When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah,

  112. saying out of the ground that the Lord has cursed.

  113. This one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.

  114. Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  115. Thus, all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

  116. After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

  117. This is the word of the Lord.

  118. Praise be to God.

  119. Thank you, ladies.

  120. Please take a seat.

  121. Can we give them a round of applause?

  122. Woo!

  123. If you are expecting a baby, and were looking for inspiration for baby names,

  124. Genesis 5 is your friend.

  125. I've told you before, I grew up in the late 1900s.

  126. Well, actually, I was born in the late 1900s,

  127. but I actually grew up, or I was fully formed, in the early 2000s.

  128. And my mentors at the time were a guy called Marshall Mathers, otherwise known as Eminem.

  129. And then 50 Cent was someone else as well.

  130. And Nelly was someone that I listened to sometimes.

  131. I got a nod from you, Alex.

  132. Did you listen to Nelly?

  133. Back in the day.

  134. It's getting hot in here.

  135. Correct.

  136. If you just have a peek into the end of chapter 4, you'll see the first version of a gangster rap.

  137. You'll see Lamech.

  138. The end of chapter 4, we're not going through it, so don't worry.

  139. But you see, when Cain murders his brother, and then God sends him and goes,

  140. and then his descendants, there's a list of actually his descendants.

  141. And what actually happens is, verse 17 in chapter 4,

  142. Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch.

  143. And when he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

  144. So this begins.

  145. This begins of, hey, I want to name something after myself.

  146. I'm going to make a name for myself.

  147. And so you see, the descendants of Cain, that's where they're heading.

  148. And it just keeps going.

  149. It keeps going up until the point where, and then you have Lamech, verse 19.

  150. Lamech here, he has two wives.

  151. Adam and Eve only had one.

  152. And yet, for some reason, he decided, actually, I will have whatever my eyes desire,

  153. and I'm now going to have two wives.

  154. Not only does he have two wives, and then he sings a song to them, which is verse 23,

  155. and he basically raps to them, and he's saying, hey, you two, you two are my wives.

  156. Listen to me.

  157. Listen to what I've done.

  158. I have killed a man.

  159. That sounds like gangster rap to me.

  160. And he's proud of it.

  161. And so what you see then, and actually, society is changing here.

  162. Because if you have a look, look, Adam and Eve, of course, in the garden.

  163. There's nothing else around.

  164. There's no technology.

  165. There's no iPads.

  166. You'd thought of just garden.

  167. But by the time it gets to Lamech, actually, just before that, in verse 21, suddenly, you've

  168. got instruments.

  169. The lyre, the pipe.

  170. Verse 22, there are instruments of bronze and iron.

  171. Again, civilization was starting to develop.

  172. Culture was starting to develop.

  173. Gangsters were starting to appear.

  174. And then you ask, well, okay, I can see where we suddenly get to where we are now.

  175. And then you wonder, well, what hope is there?

  176. What was God's response to the evil that was starting to multiply?

  177. You see, what happens is when you choose sin, when you choose the fruit, it's not just about

  178. the fruit.

  179. It's about the thing that happens after the fruit.

  180. And then it's about the thing that happens after the fruit that happens after the fruit.

  181. And what you then see is just generational sin.

  182. And you see it just passing down the line.

  183. See, God made Adam after him, and he was perfect.

  184. But then Adam decided to choose another way.

  185. So he was not perfect anymore.

  186. And so then when actually Adam then has his children, they are no longer perfect.

  187. And it passes down to you.

  188. I would guess if you took a little time to think about your parents and your family and

  189. your grandparents, you're like, oh, I think I can see where some of my shortcomings are

  190. coming from.

  191. I think they're passed down from there.

  192. They are generational.

  193. So what hope do we have?

  194. At the end of chapter 4, verse 25, Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called

  195. his name Seth.

  196. For she said, God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed

  197. him.

  198. To Seth also was a son born, and he called his name Enosh.

  199. At that time, people began to call upon the name of the Lord.

  200. So even though gangster rappers were starting to appear everywhere, there was another line.

  201. There was another group of people that were starting to form, from Adam down to Seth.

  202. And at that time, people started to call upon the name of the Lord.

  203. There was another group of people that started to say, hey, we're not going to live that way.

  204. We're not going to succumb to that kind of way of living and thinking.

  205. We're going to call upon the name of the Lord.

  206. And that's when we move into the wonderful list that is Genesis chapter 5, that we are

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  207. going to try and go through a little bit.

  208. But before we go through, and don't worry, we're not going to go verse by verse.

  209. But what we will do is just take out some of the key themes.

  210. When you look at a list like this, when you look at any list in the Bible, what you're

  211. trying to do is actually look at the patterns.

  212. And you're looking at the details and see what's happening here.

  213. And what's the author trying to show you?

  214. And the first thing that you have to address to begin with is why are people living so

  215. long?

  216. Right?

  217. Some people say, oh, is it really that word?

  218. Well, it is.

  219. I do believe it is.

  220. And here are a few reasons that I have, that as I looked and as I read about it, that actually

  221. I'm convinced that these are the real ages of the people.

  222. The first thing is, remember, Adam and Eve ate the fruit.

  223. So they introduced sin into the world.

  224. But at that point, it was still paradise.

  225. The world that God had created was still pure.

  226. It was not polluted by the actions of man.

  227. So you can imagine even the fruits that they were eating would have been glorious, would

  228. have been delicious, would have been nutritious.

  229. So actually the paradise, and actually this was all happening before the flood.

  230. So actually creation itself would have been exactly how God intended.

  231. And so I can imagine then that actually it would have been okay.

  232. It would have been reasonable to actually assume that people could live for much, much longer.

  233. The second thing, before sin was introduced into mankind, into the human genetic code,

  234. you would have had actually genes.

  235. DNA would have really not been mutated.

  236. They would have not have been compromised.

  237. So actually you would say actually the genes from the original man and woman would have

  238. been pure as well.

  239. That would have again lent itself to them living much, much longer than what we do now.

  240. A third reason is in order for people to actually fulfill the creation cultural mandate,

  241. which is to be fruitful and multiply, to fill the earth.

  242. You would have had to have people live much longer.

  243. It wouldn't have been possible if everyone still lived just to this age that we were in.

  244. In fact, God said, hey, create culture.

  245. Make it to reflect me.

  246. It would have had to have people who were able to live much longer for art and civilization

  247. to even develop.

  248. Right?

  249. Otherwise there would be no chance.

  250. Hong Kong had a boom.

  251. Actually, some of you know, my family, my dad's family, he was the youngest of 10.

  252. Actually at that point there were 16, but of course medicine was just different back then,

  253. so 10 survived.

  254. And my mum was the second youngest of 11.

  255. And of course that's when population just kind of exploded.

  256. And of course imagine if all of the, imagine the smartest people in the world.

  257. Imagine if Einstein lived for 900 years.

  258. Imagine how much there would be developed in the way of maths and the way of science.

  259. Imagine if Mozart lived for 900 years and all the music that would be developed.

  260. So I think one of the reasons, my personal take is, God allowed for mankind to live for

  261. that long, so for culture to develop, for science to develop, for arts to develop.

  262. Anyway, so it's a side note.

  263. We're not going to focus too much on it.

  264. But if you're asking about why the people lived for so long, I would say that's why.

  265. The other reason is, remember, mankind was not supposed to die.

  266. Because if we didn't eat the fruit, then we would have stayed with God and walked with

  267. God and been with God forever.

  268. And then there is a painful reminder of that.

  269. If you look at this list again, what's the thing that you notice?

  270. Remember, rhythm, patterns, details.

  271. The creation story, he makes one thing on one day, and then he says, and there was evening,

  272. and there was morning, and it was good.

  273. Day two, and there was evening, and there was morning, and it was good.

  274. Day three, the same thing.

  275. Remember, by the time it got to day six, where he was making man and woman, he says, it's

  276. not just good.

  277. It is very good.

  278. Which shows you that actually, God cares especially a lot about humans.

  279. When he reaches day seven, and it's the Sabbath, and where he rests, he doesn't even say, there

  280. is evening, there is morning.

  281. And that's where we explored.

  282. Maybe we were just created to be in a state of perpetual rest that we have strayed from.

  283. So you see those rhythms.

  284. If you look at this list in Genesis chapter five, please feel free to have a look.

  285. And what you see, something else that you see here is, after every person, it says, there's

  286. all the days that Adam lived, that Enosh lived, that Canaan lived.

  287. What's the word that comes out?

  288. And he died.

  289. The painful reminder that mankind is now going to die.

  290. Remember, it was never supposed to happen.

  291. My brother spends a lot of time ministering to people, caring for people at funerals.

  292. And actually, he's shared multiple times over the years that actually he cherishes those

  293. places, those spaces, because when you're with those people in those moments of grieving,

  294. life seems to stand still.

  295. It seems to pause.

  296. Suddenly, perspective seems to come.

  297. And suddenly, you understand what Scripture says when it's better to be in a house of mourning

  298. than to be the one that's celebrating.

  299. Because when you're celebrating, you actually lose perspective of what life is.

  300. It's when you see that life comes to an end, is finite.

  301. That's when it's sobering.

  302. But that's actually when life becomes actual life.

  303. Because you realize how precious it is.

  304. You see here, the writer seems to just remind us that this is almost the justice of God.

  305. This is the consequence of the actions of man.

  306. That each person that lives from now on, and he died, and he died, and he died.

  307. And I've shared at length with you in the past about my relationship with death.

  308. That is something that I think about regularly, since my dad passed when I was 17, and grandparents

  309. shortly after.

  310. And again, cherishing that very thing that death brings, which is that you appreciate what

  311. life truly is.

  312. So you go through this list, and you see everyone dies.

  313. But that's not the truth, is it?

  314. Did anyone notice that someone didn't die in this list?

  315. Who was the one who didn't die?

  316. Enoch did not die.

  317. What?

  318. Let's take a look.

  319. Try and find him in your list.

  320. And you see chapter 5, verse 18.

  321. Jared had lived 162 years.

  322. He fathered Enoch.

  323. Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 18 years, and had son and daughters.

  324. And so Jared was the father to Enoch, who lived 65 years.

  325. He fathered Methuselah.

  326. And then Enoch walked with God.

  327. And later, 24, Enoch walked with God, and he was not.

  328. For God took him.

  329. One of two people that don't die.

  330. He's one.

  331. Who's the other one?

  332. Elijah.

  333. Taken up.

  334. God just takes him.

  335. Can you imagine being there at that time?

  336. In civilization.

  337. As the group of people who were trying to call on the name of the Lord, and the other

  338. group of gangsters that are on the other side.

  339. And everyone's dying.

  340. And you're like, man, if only we didn't eat the fruit.

  341. We wouldn't have died.

  342. We wouldn't have to keep saying goodbye to these people that we love.

  343. And then suddenly, in this rhythm, in this pattern, someone breaks it.

  344. Someone doesn't die.

  345. Enoch, if you have a look.

  346. Actually, there's not much we know about Enoch.

  347. I mean, what a great thing to actually be described as, just that you walked with God.

  348. And I'll talk a little bit about that later.

  349. I'm just going to fly all the way to the other side of the Bible now, in the book of Jude,

  350. which is just before Revelation.

  351. We actually get a little peek about who Enoch is.

  352. Jude, verse 14 to 16.

  353. I'm going to read it to you.

  354. And it was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, interesting.

  355. It's the number seven, which is the number of completion in the Bible.

  356. It's the seventh descendant from Adam, prophesied, saying,

  357. Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment on all

  358. and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way

  359. and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

  360. These are the grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires.

  361. They are loudmouth boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

  362. Interesting.

  363. Enoch walked with God.

  364. And what does he do?

  365. He's a preacher.

  366. He's telling the generations, hey, don't live that way.

  367. He actually stood up to the society that he was in, preaching repentance.

  368. Isn't that interesting?

  369. Even more interesting.

  370. Sorry, I went on a bit of a just kind of like a rabbit hole with some of this research.

  371. He's a seventh from Adam.

  372. Guess who else was seventh from Adam?

  373. The original gangster rapper, Lamech, with two wives.

  374. He was also the seventh.

  375. So then it would have actually stood to pretty reasonable chance that actually Enoch and Lamech,

  376. Lamech would have been contemporaries.

  377. They would have lived around the same time.

  378. So then Enoch's actually preaching to people like Lamech, who are having two wives,

  379. who are killing people and proud of it and singing about it.

  380. He's like, repent.

  381. This is not the way to live.

  382. That is Enoch.

  383. And it's interesting because he breaks the rhythm.

  384. And he was, he walked with God, and then he was not.

  385. Because God took him.

  386. It makes me think, it makes me think what it would have been like to be in that society

  387. where everyone is dying and suddenly the one person doesn't die.

  388. Wouldn't that have been just, that would have been all over the news.

  389. Did you hear?

  390. Did you hear about Jared's son?

  391. He didn't die.

  392. He just got taken away.

  393. Guys, there's something out there that's more than what we can see.

  394. Maybe there's something beyond this realm here.

  395. Maybe there's something beyond this paradise.

  396. Maybe there's something out there.

  397. Someone didn't die.

  398. And what a legacy.

  399. If you look at the maths, and they would actually kind of be reasonable to say that Enoch was middle-aged,

  400. or just actually he was still in the prime of his life.

  401. 365.

  402. Which makes me think, actually it reminds me, as I'm approaching a significant birthday myself,

  403. my dad actually passed when he was 41.

  404. When I look back, my memory of my dad, he was like complete classic uncle material.

  405. Just the way he talked, the way he dressed.

  406. But now I'm like, oh, I'm actually the same age that he was.

  407. It's a little bit disorienting for me.

  408. It's a little bit like, oh, why does God take people away at different stages in their lives?

  409. And as I think about that, I think, actually, what was the legacy that my dad left?

  410. I would say, if I was to describe it, it would be one of integrity.

  411. He was the same everywhere.

  412. Whether he was talking to his university students, whether he was talking to his church friends,

  413. whether he was talking to his family, he really felt like the same person.

  414. And as his son, who lived in his house, I would say the same.

  415. He was a man of integrity.

  416. Sounds a little bit like Enoch, who walked with God.

  417. The question I want to ask you here, just as a little pause and reflection,

  418. is if you were to be cut down, if God was to take you away,

  419. and the way we all want to die is in our sleep.

  420. We all know that.

  421. If God was to take you away in your sleep tonight,

  422. and next week we have to write about you.

  423. What's the legacy you want to have?

  424. How do you want to be described?

  425. I want you to have just 20 seconds to think about it,

  426. because I may ask you,

  427. because I think it's important to think about this.

  428. It's important to think about the end of your life

  429. and what your life was all about.

  430. I'll share first, just to help buy you some time.

  431. I think at the end, if on my grave, it just says James was real.

  432. He was just whoever you saw he was, that was it.

  433. You might not find him funny, but he's still going to keep telling jokes.

  434. You might not agree with how he does church,

  435. but he's going to keep following Jesus in the way he thinks.

  436. And he was real to every person.

  437. And actually the same James that Reuben, Alicia, and Micah see

  438. is the same James that you see.

  439. What's yours?

  440. J1, what's yours?

  441. Yeah.

  442. A man who is humble before God.

  443. Wow.

  444. Again, that's a peak.

  445. That's a portal into something bigger.

  446. In a world where we stay here,

  447. can we just be the biggest person that we can be,

  448. climb the ladder that we can climb,

  449. and everything's about us and what we can achieve

  450. and what fulfills us.

  451. Suddenly there's a portal open saying,

  452. there is a man that was humble before God.

  453. What that really means,

  454. if you keep unpacking it and give him time to,

  455. but it's, man, he doesn't really care as much

  456. what other people think.

  457. He's not humbling himself unto other people.

  458. There's only one that he's seeking the approval of.

  459. Matthew, what's yours?

  460. What's yours?

  461. Loving.

  462. Matthew, loved.

  463. I see that.

  464. I think it's important to think about that

  465. because when you think about what your legacy is,

  466. sometimes you don't feel like that person.

  467. But the challenge is,

  468. we make decisions based on who we want to become.

  469. And so actually when we know what we want to be like,

  470. who we want to be,

  471. then actually even when we don't feel like it,

  472. even when we don't feel like doing something,

  473. well, actually that's who I want to become,

  474. so I'm going to make that decision right now

  475. so I get a step closer to that person.

  476. I can absolutely guarantee

  477. that Enoch did not live in a time

  478. where it was easy to walk with God.

  479. And yet here we are seeing

  480. that's exactly what he did.

  481. What is your legacy?

  482. A Christ follower

  483. is someone who is counter-cultural,

  484. who just lives in a different way.

  485. When someone looks at you,

  486. do they go,

  487. hmm, that person is just different.

  488. Sometimes a little bit weird,

  489. but that person is just different.

  490. That's what it means.

  491. To be holy.

  492. That's what it means,

  493. to be set apart,

  494. to be different.

  495. Anyway, let's carry on.

  496. So Enoch,

  497. he keeps going,

  498. because actually this whole passage

  499. isn't even about Enoch.

  500. Okay, so we keep going.

  501. Enoch, when he's 65,

  502. has Methuselah.

  503. Methuselah is the subject

  504. of lots of interesting Bible trivia.

  505. Why?

  506. Does anyone know

  507. what the Bible trivia for Methuselah is?

  508. He's the oldest man in the Bible.

  509. 969 years.

  510. Okay?

  511. So it gets a little bit more interesting here,

  512. kind of.

  513. And so he then has Methuselah.

  514. Methuselah here,

  515. actually his word,

  516. his name actually means

  517. when he dies,

  518. it shall be sent.

  519. That's what his word means.

  520. The first part means death

  521. and that's the second part.

  522. So it's when Methuselah dies,

  523. it will be sent.

  524. I want you to keep that

  525. in the back of your minds

  526. and remember it

  527. because it will come back later.

  528. Okay?

  529. So that he has a kid

  530. and his kid is called Lamech.

  531. Not the same Lamech

  532. from chapter four.

  533. Not the gangster rapper.

  534. Okay?

  535. This is another Lamech.

  536. Okay?

  537. And this Lamech

  538. is actually

  539. a bit of a prophet also

  540. because he actually

  541. gets a quote

  542. written in the scriptures here.

  543. So Lamech

  544. then actually

  545. fathers

  546. a son.

  547. But before we go there,

  548. there's something

  549. that's interesting.

  550. If you look at,

  551. we're looking,

  552. being inspectors here,

  553. if you look at the scriptures,

  554. it's always when Jared had lived,

  555. he had this

  556. and he fathered Enoch.

  557. When Enoch had lived,

  558. he fathered Methuselah.

  559. So it's always this rhythm of

  560. this person

  561. fathers this person

  562. and it just keeps going

  563. until you reach here

  564. and then suddenly

  565. you look at verse 28.

  566. When Lamech had lived

  567. 182 years,

  568. he fathered,

  569. not just the name,

  570. he fathered a son.

  571. Long pause.

  572. The writer breaks the trend.

  573. He breaks the pattern

  574. because he's saying

  575. there's something important

  576. about this next son

  577. that you all need to know about.

  578. Lamech fathers a son.

  579. Long pause.

  580. And he named him Noah,

  581. which means rest,

  582. which means relief.

  583. Can you imagine

  584. how exhausting

  585. it would have been

  586. to live in that society,

  587. to walk with God

  588. despite all of your friends

  589. doing something different?

  590. And every time

  591. you try and do something right

  592. in your job

  593. as you run your company,

  594. every time you try

  595. and do something right,

  596. there's another person

  597. who's prospering

  598. and they're doing

  599. the exact opposite.

  600. Can you imagine

  601. how exhausting

  602. it would have felt

  603. to be working,

  604. to be raising a family

  605. in that kind of society?

  606. I can imagine

  607. because I feel

  608. as though there's hints

  609. of that here.

  610. And how tiring that is.

  611. If only,

  612. if only we lived

  613. in a place

  614. where we didn't have

  615. to keep fighting

  616. against society,

  617. fighting against culture,

  618. fighting against sin.

  619. Lamech fathers a son,

  620. long pause,

  621. and he's going to call him

  622. rest,

  623. relief.

  624. Noah.

  625. And then he actually says it.

  626. Out of the ground

  627. that the Lord has cursed,

  628. this one shall bring

  629. us relief

  630. from our work

  631. and from the painful

  632. toil of our hands.

  633. He's saying,

  634. guys,

  635. I'm so tired.

  636. I'm fighting society.

  637. But there's going

  638. to be one who comes,

  639. who gives us rest

  640. and who gives us relief.

  641. Out of the ground

  642. that the Lord has cursed.

  643. Where did Lamech hear that?

  644. When did we last hear

  645. about that kind of line,

  646. that kind of phrasing?

  647. You have to go back

  648. to chapter three,

  649. when God tells Adam

  650. after he eats the fruit,

  651. you shall not eat of it.

  652. Cursed is the ground

  653. because of you.

  654. Guess who Lamech

  655. heard that line from?

  656. If you track the ages

  657. of all the people

  658. in this list,

  659. something surprising

  660. will show up,

  661. which is that actually

  662. Adam lived

  663. with every single person

  664. in this list.

  665. The person

  666. who Lamech

  667. would have heard

  668. that quote from

  669. is Adam himself.

  670. Isn't that mind-blowing

  671. to you?

  672. My dad died at 41.

  673. One of my biggest regrets,

  674. one of my only regrets,

  675. because I don't like

  676. living life with regrets,

  677. is I wish I got to know him

  678. as a fellow adult.

  679. He loved tennis,

  680. he loved beer,

  681. and he loved farsan.

  682. And we would have just sat,

  683. and we would have just eaten,

  684. and drank,

  685. and talked.

  686. And I wish

  687. I could have known him.

  688. Because to him,

  689. I would have just been

  690. that annoying teenager

  691. that was trying to hide

  692. things from him

  693. at 17.

  694. But to be able to sit

  695. with him across

  696. would be my biggest dream,

  697. would be my biggest regret.

  698. So forget my grandfather.

  699. Forget my great-great-grandfather,

  700. who came down from Boon

  701. to live in Yunlong,

  702. Ping San,

  703. to settle there

  704. and have the family

  705. and have the Tang Clan

  706. kind of grow there.

  707. I would have loved to meet them.

  708. That would have been fun.

  709. Can you imagine

  710. Lamech would have been able

  711. to sit with his

  712. great-great-great-great-great-great-

  713. great-great-great-great-

  714. great-grandfather, Adam,

  715. and said,

  716. why did you eat the fruit?

  717. Why did you not tell

  718. great-great-great-great-

  719. great-great-great-

  720. great-great-great-great-

  721. grandma

  722. what God told you?

  723. Why did you stay silent?

  724. Now, because of you,

  725. my work,

  726. my homework,

  727. is hard

  728. when it shouldn't have been.

  729. Can you imagine

  730. that feeling

  731. of him sat with Adam

  732. and Adam telling him,

  733. I'm so sorry.

  734. It wasn't supposed

  735. to be like this.

  736. We were supposed

  737. to be walking

  738. in the garden

  739. in the cool of the day

  740. with God himself.

  741. but in one slip,

  742. we are where we are.

  743. I know you're tired

  744. and I'm sorry.

  745. Can you imagine

  746. sitting at Adam's feet?

  747. Interesting is this.

  748. Methuselah actually lived

  749. all the way

  750. till he got to see

  751. his own grandson,

  752. Noah.

  753. In fact,

  754. what did the meaning

  755. of his name mean?

  756. Methuselah.

  757. Does anyone?

  758. When he dies,

  759. it shall be sent.

  760. If you do the math,

  761. Methuselah lives

  762. 969 years.

  763. If you trace

  764. when he comes

  765. and from the,

  766. if day zero,

  767. if year zero

  768. was when Adam was born,

  769. Methuselah dies

  770. in year 1656,

  771. 1656.

  772. That is the same year

  773. that the flood comes.

  774. Which tells me

  775. another thing.

  776. Grandfather

  777. Methuselah

  778. would have actually

  779. lived

  780. whilst Noah

  781. was building the ark

  782. because Noah

  783. spent 100 years

  784. building the ark.

  785. So grandfather

  786. would have been there.

  787. Lamech would have been there.

  788. So grandfather

  789. and father was there.

  790. Something else about Lamech

  791. which is interesting,

  792. he was the first person

  793. to die before his dad.

  794. Lamech only lives

  795. 777 years.

  796. Methuselah lives

  797. 969.

  798. God's almost trying

  799. to show us

  800. something about

  801. Methuselah's life

  802. which means

  803. when he dies

  804. it shall be sent

  805. that actually

  806. there is

  807. there is patience

  808. to God's judgment.

  809. God doesn't send

  810. the flood

  811. until he dies

  812. and he lasts it.

  813. He dragged it out

  814. for as long as is possible.

  815. 969 years.

  816. What does that remind me of?

  817. 2 Peter 3

  818. that the Lord

  819. is not slow to judge.

  820. It's not the same

  821. slowness that we look.

  822. We look at the world

  823. right now

  824. and we go,

  825. Jesus,

  826. why don't you just

  827. pull the plug?

  828. This world is so messed up.

  829. Let's just finish it here

  830. and God says,

  831. no,

  832. I can still wait

  833. because there are

  834. still people

  835. who can come to me.

  836. There are still people

  837. who will be able

  838. to experience my love.

  839. I'm going to wait

  840. because a thousand years

  841. is a day to me

  842. when it comes to my children

  843. and waiting for them

  844. to come home.

  845. And so what you have

  846. is Methuselah

  847. is almost a symbol

  848. of that God waiting,

  849. waiting,

  850. waiting,

  851. waiting.

  852. 969 years

  853. until it's time.

  854. Okay,

  855. this is the time

  856. where rest and relief comes.

  857. Interesting.

  858. We'll talk about this

  859. next week

  860. because actually

  861. Noah has a lot of time later

  862. so we're not going

  863. to focus on him

  864. but the flood comes

  865. and it's the flood,

  866. it's the judgment

  867. that brings rest

  868. and relief

  869. to creation.

  870. Methuselah and Lamech

  871. are actually

  872. the two people

  873. who bridge,

  874. who bridge Adam

  875. to Noah.

  876. Noah in this whole list

  877. is the only person

  878. who doesn't know Adam,

  879. who hasn't met Adam.

  880. Isn't that interesting?

  881. So what's this whole list about?

  882. It's actually not about Enoch,

  883. how he walked with God

  884. and how he died

  885. in middle age.

  886. It's actually not about Methuselah

  887. that he lived to 969.

  888. This whole list

  889. is about one thing.

  890. The author is trying

  891. to show us one thing

  892. from Adam to Noah

  893. because I'll tell you

  894. something else.

  895. This whole list of people

  896. that goes from Adam

  897. to Noah,

  898. they're not all good.

  899. Even though this line

  900. started to call upon

  901. the name of the Lord,

  902. this line is not all good.

  903. Why?

  904. Because this line,

  905. everyone ends up drowning

  906. in the flood

  907. apart from Noah's family.

  908. This whole chapter

  909. is about God showing us

  910. from Adam to Noah

  911. that there is a rescue plan,

  912. that there is someone

  913. who is going to deliver

  914. mankind

  915. from sin

  916. and give man

  917. rest and relief.

  918. Are you tired?

  919. Are you exhausted

  920. of living the life

  921. that you're living?

  922. Are you so fed up

  923. of the darkness

  924. that's around you?

  925. Every time you open

  926. the news

  927. and you see the issues

  928. that surround us,

  929. every time you go to work

  930. and you see the problems

  931. that exist,

  932. are you tired of that?

  933. Are you losing hope

  934. because you are surrounded

  935. by gangster rappers

  936. everywhere

  937. who are proud

  938. of what they do

  939. and you're trying

  940. to figure it out

  941. but actually you realize

  942. that you're not so good yourself?

  943. Are you tired of that?

  944. Of trying to deliver yourself?

  945. If we look at this,

  946. we can see

  947. and he died

  948. and he died

  949. and he died.

  950. This is a whole list

  951. but it wasn't about the people,

  952. it's about where he's

  953. trying to get to.

  954. He's trying to get from Adam

  955. to Noah

  956. because he's bringing

  957. a deliverer.

  958. He's bringing someone

  959. to deliver us

  960. from all the pain,

  961. death,

  962. sickness

  963. that we experience

  964. right now.

  965. And afterwards,

  966. from Noah,

  967. you know it doesn't go well.

  968. Noah actually also

  969. has that description

  970. that he walked with God

  971. but actually he also dies.

  972. Actually,

  973. Noah's end of life

  974. doesn't end that great either.

  975. And so then,

  976. mankind keeps going

  977. and eventually God

  978. sends another deliverer.

  979. Who does he send?

  980. He sends Moses

  981. to deliver.

  982. And each time,

  983. God sends someone

  984. to come and try

  985. and rescue the people

  986. away from darkness.

  987. But even that

  988. isn't good enough.

  989. This genealogy

  990. is something that you find

  991. at the beginning

  992. of the Old Testament.

  993. But if you fast forward

  994. to the New Testament,

  995. at the beginning

  996. of the New Testament,

  997. there's another genealogy.

  998. this list

  999. doesn't just go

  1000. from Adam to Noah.

  1001. This traces it

  1002. to someone else

  1003. and it traces it

  1004. to a final deliverer.

  1005. Someone that

  1006. Hebrews 3 and 4 says

  1007. is greater

  1008. than Moses himself.

  1009. That is the great

  1010. every other deliverer

  1011. that has happened

  1012. in the past

  1013. is nothing compared

  1014. to this final deliverer

  1015. who is to come.

1016. The one who will give

  1017. final rest.

1018. The one who will give

  1019. relief

  1020. to our toil

  1021. as we are working

  1022. the ground

  1023. that is cursed.

  1024. He is the one

  1025. who ends up

1026. taking on all the curses

  1027. on himself.

  1028. And even though

  1029. Adam was cursed

  1030. to work the ground

  1031. with the thorns

  1032. and the fissles

  1033. and hurting his hands,

  1034. this final deliverer,

  1035. this final one

  1036. that the genealogy

  1037. in Matthew,

  1038. the genealogy in Luke

  1039. points to

1040. is one who was willing

  1041. to have his hands

  1042. pierced

1043. to do all the work

1044. that needs to be done

  1045. to rescue us

  1046. from,

  1047. quite frankly,

  1048. ourselves.

  1049. Whether it's obvious

  1050. or not,

  1051. we are

  1052. the gangster rappers.

  1053. We are the ones

  1054. caught

  1055. in sin.

  1056. That person,

  1057. of course,

  1058. is Jesus.

  1059. Adam and Eve

  1060. failed miserably

  1061. in their first walk

  1062. in the garden

  1063. when they did

  1064. exactly what God

1065. told them not to do.

  1066. But you fast forward

  1067. to this deliverer,

  1068. he's also in a garden,

  1069. he also doesn't want

  1070. to follow God's will

  1071. and yet he says,

  1072. not my will

  1073. but yours

  1074. be done.

  1075. And so he then

  1076. drinks from the cup

  1077. of suffering

  1078. for us.

  1079. He then takes on

  1080. the consequence

  1081. of sin

  1082. for us.

  1083. The Lion of Cain

  1084. built a name

  1085. for themselves,

  1086. a city named

  1087. after themselves,

  1088. but this one

  1089. had the ultimate name,

1090. the name above all names,

1091. but decided to empty himself

  1092. to come down

  1093. from his throne

  1094. in heaven,

  1095. to come down

  1096. to be with us

  1097. in the dirt

  1098. and humbled himself

  1099. even to the point

  1100. of death,

  1101. even death

  1102. on the cross.

  1103. Adam and Eve

  1104. failed at the tree.

  1105. Jesus,

  1106. the final deliverer,

  1107. succeeds at the tree

  1108. on the cross.

1109. and we are sat here

  1110. because of him.

1111. He came to show us

  1112. there is something

  1113. beyond the grave.

  1114. So imagine yourself.

  1115. Where you're at

  1116. right now,

  1117. how must you respond?

  1118. You and I,

1119. we are part of a list

  1120. that looks just

  1121. like this.

  1122. The numbers

  1123. have been going

  1124. further and further down.

  1125. But it's really

  1126. just the same.

  1127. Paul lived,

  1128. he sang,

  1129. and he died.

  1130. Sam lived,

  1131. he taught,

  1132. and he died.

  1133. Queenie

  1134. did all the stuff

  1135. that she does

  1136. with law,

  1137. and she lived,

  1138. and she died.

  1139. Justina

  1140. plays the violin

  1141. in the most

  1142. beautiful way,

  1143. and she dies.

  1144. And just before

  1145. you think,

  1146. that is so morbid

  1147. and so negative,

  1148. that is ruining

  1149. my vibes here,

  1150. remember,

  1151. the pattern

  1152. gets broken.

  1153. the pattern

  1154. gets broken.

  1155. We get delivered.

  1156. We can sing

  1157. that song,

  1158. that hymn of heaven,

  1159. because the pattern

  1160. was broken.

  1161. So we can face

  1162. whoever we have

  1163. in front of us

  1164. and live in a

  1165. different way,

  1166. knowing that God

  1167. is patient,

1168. and we should be too,

  1169. because he will

  1170. bring rest

  1171. and relief.

  1172. before we jump

  1173. into a final song,

  1174. I want us to

  1175. have a few moments

  1176. just to

  1177. absorb all that

  1178. and ask

  1179. what that means

  1180. for you.

  1181. This life

  1182. that God

  1183. has given

  1184. to us,

  1185. what are we

  1186. supposed to do

  1187. with it?

  1188. What is the legacy

  1189. that we're supposed

  1190. to write?

  1191. Not a legacy

  1192. for ourselves,

1193. not to make a name

  1194. for ourselves,

  1195. but how can we

1196. be part of a line

  1197. that ultimately

  1198. points to the

  1199. one deliverer,

  1200. the one rescuer?

  1201. Let's spend a moment

  1202. now to reflect.

  1203. Lord, as we look

  1204. at your word,

  1205. as we look

  1206. at the passage

  1207. from today,

  1208. whether we zoom

  1209. right into the details,

  1210. whether we zoom

  1211. right out,

  1212. what we see

  1213. is just that you

  1214. are in control,

  1215. that despite

  1216. the mistakes

  1217. of man,

  1218. you are sovereign.

  1219. Despite

  1220. the pain

  1221. and the sickness

  1222. that we experience,

  1223. you are in control.

  1224. Despite

  1225. the ground

  1226. that we work

  1227. being cursed,

  1228. you are still

  1229. here.

  1230. Despite

  1231. childbirth

  1232. being painful,

  1233. you are here

  1234. to bring sorrow

  1235. and turn it

  1236. into joy.

  1237. Lord,

  1238. all creation

  1239. is longing

  1240. for the revealing

  1241. of your children

  1242. to be who we

  1243. truly are supposed

  1244. to be.

  1245. and we

  1246. maintain that hope

  1247. in you

  1248. for it is by

  1249. that hope

  1250. that we are saved.

  1251. So we can sit

1252. in a time like this,

  1253. with a work

  1254. like this,

  1255. with a family

  1256. like this,

  1257. because you have

  1258. delivered us

  1259. and you will

  1260. come back again

  1261. once and for all.

  1262. Make all things

  1263. new.

1264. so we come to you

  1265. now with our

  1266. pain,

  1267. our anxiety,

  1268. our confusion,

  1269. our anger,

  1270. our pride.

  1271. we cry out

  1272. just like

  1273. Enoch would

  1274. that you would

  1275. deliver us,

  1276. that we who

  1277. were once dead

  1278. in our trespasses

  1279. and sins

  1280. following the

  1281. course of this

  1282. world

  1283. would be made

  1284. alive together

  1285. because of your

  1286. great love

  1287. and your mercy.

  1288. Thank you

  1289. for delivering us.
