  1. Thank you, Alex. Good morning, everyone. Good to see you all. Oh, actually, space. Breathing room. Isn't that good?

  2. So it turns out the only way we had to do it was just to see who chooses to travel on a public holiday weekend to celebrate Buddha.

  3. And now we know who are the ones who are going to be saved and those who are not.

  4. It is a good day. Thank you for being here with us. Today is a good day. It's a day that the Lord has made and we rejoice.

  5. We rejoiced. Why? Because today is the day that Arsenal Football Club will be crowned champions.

  6. Yes. Yes. It's been a long wait. And here we are. So we are. And it's going to be an even better day.

  7. We pray hard because it's also the day that Tottenham Hotspur may end up in the championship.

  8. That will be the day. That is. Sorry, I have to get that out of the way before I go into the word of God.

  9. But it's important. We've been going through Genesis.

  10. I don't know if you've been like me, but as I've been going through Genesis, it almost feels like I've been going through it for the first time.

  11. Because I've been looking at, wow, the creation account.

  12. And then just from the beginning all the way to where we are now in Genesis chapter six,

  13. which is probably the first famous story in Genesis that most of us, whether we grew up in church or not, will know about,

  14. which is the story of Noah.

  15. I realized there's so many things that I missed.

  16. There's so many things that I missed.

  17. And if you have your Bibles, please open it up with me just from the very beginning.

  18. Genesis is the first book in the Bible.

  19. And we're just going to go from the beginning.

  20. And I'm going to do a quick recap.

  21. Previously in Genesis, this is what happens.

  22. Genesis chapter one, God speaks creation into life.

  23. He keeps making things on the six days.

  24. And then he says, what does he say after he makes every day?

  25. It was good.

  26. So he looks and he saw creation.

  27. He said it was good.

  28. But then in chapter two, he said something wasn't good.

  29. What wasn't good in chapter two?

  30. He saw, I think I heard it, he saw that man was alone and man could not be left alone because man is hopeless on his own.

  31. And so he says, I will make a helper, a complimentary strength to help him.

  32. And so chapter two zooms in to day six.

  33. And then chapter three is where it really all goes wrong.

  34. The man stays silent.

  35. The woman listens to the serpent and eats the fruit.

  36. And you think, what could be so bad about that?

  37. Well, here it is.

  38. The original sin, the original cause of sin is just the mistrust of God.

  39. And Gabe told us it was also the misvaluing of God.

  40. It's saying, God, you're not really worth as much as you should be to me.

  41. And so I'm going to go in this direction first.

  42. So the fruit is eaten.

  43. And then Genesis chapter four, just when you thought it was just about fruit, it wasn't about fruit.

  44. The fruit then leads to murder.

  45. It leads to the first murder where a brother murders his other one.

  46. And then you're like, whoa, that's bad.

  47. And it's bad for Cain and he gets banished away.

  48. But yet somehow God is still gracious.

  49. And he says, hey, actually, I will still protect you.

  50. But sadly, sin gives birth to more sin.

  51. And the slippery slope of sin begins.

  52. And what was a fruit then led to a murder.

  53. Then at the end of chapter four led to Lamech, who I talked about last week.

  54. The first gangster rapper who was rapping to his two wives and saying, I killed a man because he just looked at me wrong.

  55. And he was proud of it.

  56. And civilization was starting to build.

  57. And culture was starting to happen.

  58. But it wasn't the culture that God wanted.

  59. This line of Cain that came down to Lamech was one that was violent, one that was aggressive, one that was oppressive.

  60. And then you think, well, what hope do we have?

  61. And then at the end of chapter four, you see there's a replacement for Abel and it comes in the name of Seth.

  62. And then there's a line of Seth that happens.

  63. And that group, that group is different.

  64. And it's from that moment at the end of chapter four, it says, and people started to call upon the name of the Lord.

  65. So while there was a group that was so hell bent on violence, there was another group that was starting to call upon the name of the Lord.

  66. And then we started going down the genealogy from Adam all the way to Noah.

  67. And one of the things that we notice there is we look at a boring list like Genesis chapter five.

  68. You're looking at the rhythms.

  69. You're looking at what's actually happening in the details.

  70. And what you see, the first is, and he died.

  71. And he died.

  72. And he died.

  73. And it was a constant reminder of the consequence of sin.

  74. A constant reminder of the justice of God.

  75. And he died.

  76. And he died.

  77. And he died.

  78. And it reminds us that there is an end date to our lives.

  79. Whatever we do, there is an end date.

  80. Why?

  81. Because we chose to go the other way.

  82. Until that line, that rhythm was disturbed.

  83. It was interrupted.

  84. It reaches a guy called Enoch in the middle of Genesis chapter five.

  85. And then suddenly, Enoch doesn't die.

  86. The first person to not die.

  87. Can you imagine everyone at that moment go, wait, everyone else died?

  88. Why did Enoch not die?

  89. Okay.

  90. His life got cut short though, because he wasn't even middle-aged at that time.

  91. He was only 365.

  92. And most people at that point were living to 900.

  93. But for some reason, Enoch did not die.

  94. He walked with God.

  95. And then he was not.

  96. So God took him.

  97. One of two people, Elijah and Enoch, who was taken.

  98. Enoch then gives birth and fathers a line of people who actually do walk with God.

  99. There's Methuselah.

  100. Methuselah, the longest, the oldest man in the Bible, recorded in the Bible, 969.

  101. His name meant, when he dies, it shall be sent.

  102. Can you imagine growing up in school as Methuselah?

  103. And everyone going, hey, what's your name?

  104. Oh, my name is, when I die, it will come.

  105. Can you imagine the jokes that would be thrown at Methuselah?

  106. Hey, what's going to happen when you die, Methuselah?

  107. What's going to come?

  108. And so everyone knows that's his name.

  109. Everyone knows that something's going to happen when Methuselah dies.

  110. But before he dies, he fathers someone else called Lamech, not the gangster rapper Lamech in chapter four.

  111. This is a Lamech who is a godly man.

  112. And actually, we get to see in this list, this boring list of genealogies, we get to hear what he has to say.

  113. And he says, I'm going to have another son.

  114. And this son is going to bring rest and relief.

  115. This son is going to be called Noah.

  116. And out of the cursed ground, there will be relief.

  117. And you're like, whoa, where did he hear that line from, right?

  118. Where did Lamech, all these generations away from Adam, where did he hear that term that the ground is cursed?

  119. Well, we discovered, I discovered last week, he heard that from Adam himself.

  120. Because Adam had lived all the way through those different generations.

  121. So Methuselah and Lamech would have actually spent time with the original man,

  122. would have spent time with Adam and said, Adam, why did you eat the fruit?

  123. And Adam would have had to explain.

  124. Adam could have described what the garden would have been like.

  125. So Methuselah and Lamech, Noah's dad and grandfather, would have lived with Noah in those years when Noah was given a very specific instruction.

  126. And what was the instruction?

  127. To build an ark.

  128. And let me just stop there for a second.

  129. What do you know about Noah?

  130. When I say Noah, let's form a bass line.

  131. What are you thinking about here?

  132. The first thing I thought about was the song that I used to sing all the time.

  133. The animals went in two by two.

  134. Did you remember that song?

  135. The animals went in two by two.

  136. The elephant and the kangaroo.

  137. And they all went into the ark for to get out of the rain.

  138. This nursery rhyme that we read to our children about the animals going into the ark.

  139. But we seem to have missed the point that this story is about the wrath of God wiping out mankind.

  140. Hey, two-year-old, come and sing this song with me about how God killed everyone.

  141. And so we look at this story and we go, well, what was it about?

  142. Why was Genesis chapter 5 so intent on telling us the connection from Adam to Noah?

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  143. Adam lived with all the people in that list apart from Noah.

  144. He missed Noah.

  145. And so we're going to find out today.

  146. And I hope as we look through this book, this chapter on Genesis chapter 6 and 7 today,

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  147. you'll find out something a bit more than just the animals went in two by two.

  148. That there is a little bit more to the story.

  149. There's a little bit more than what meets the eye here.

  150. And so I'm going to invite Kara up to come and read the word of the Lord to us.

  151. Can I invite you to stand for the word of God?

  152. Today I'm going to read from Genesis 6, chapter, well, Genesis 6, verse 1 to 8.

    Genesis 6:1–8

  153. This is the word of the Lord.

  154. When men began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them,

  155. the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were attractive,

  156. and they took as their wives any they chose.

  157. Then the Lord said,

  158. My spirit shall not abide in men forever, for he is flesh.

  159. His days shall be 120 years.

  160. The Nephilim were on the earth on those days, and also afterward.

  161. When the sons of God came in to the daughters of men,

  162. they bore children to them.

  163. These were the mighty men who were old, the men of renown.

  164. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,

  165. and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

  166. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth,

  167. and it grieved him to his heart.

  168. So the Lord said,

  169. I will blot out men whom I have created from the face of the land,

  170. men and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens,

  171. for I am sorry that I have made them.

  172. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

  173. This is the word of the Lord.

  174. Praise be to God.

  175. Please take a seat.

  176. Thank you, Cara.

  177. So there was hope.

  178. There was another line, the Seth line,

  179. that was call upon the name of the Lord.

  180. But somewhere as the lines kept going,

  181. five chapters in, ten generations down,

  182. no one, even in the line of Seth,

  183. actually makes it other than one family.

  184. What happened there?

  185. Honestly, this is one of the more confusing parts of the Bible

  186. that are just hard to understand.

  187. Because if you look at this,

  188. there's things going on here that we're going to try and unpack.

  189. But I want us to try and keep the main point the main point here.

  190. Because we can actually go down rabbit holes

  191. where we chase and actually look at things

  192. that are maybe not necessarily unimportant,

  193. but just things that we are,

  194. it's impossible for understand.

  195. Okay?

  196. I was talking to a friend here who was reading C.S. Lewis recently.

  197. And he was actually saying,

  198. C.S. Lewis is really hard to read.

  199. And I'm like, absolutely.

  200. Mere Christianity is a book that maybe I've started five times.

  201. And it's taken me time and time again to get to.

  202. Because the English is just different.

  203. If you think about the Chronicles of Narnia,

  204. which you wrote,

  205. you look at the English and you're like,

  206. that is just,

  207. it's actually from a different time.

  208. It's actually a little bit harder to understand.

  209. So can you imagine then,

  210. if we find C.S. Lewis a little bit hard sometimes,

  211. can you imagine going into the original book of the Bible

  212. and looking at Genesis?

  213. Undoubtedly, there are going to be things here

  214. that we do not fully, fully get.

  215. And I want to try and address some things.

  216. I want to try and keep us on track

  217. to what this passage is also really talking about.

  218. But there are a few things that we can look at here.

  219. So the lions start to multiply on the face of the land

  220. and daughters were born to them.

  221. The sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive.

  222. How did we end up with one lion

  223. that was calling on the name of the Lord?

  224. And eventually at the end,

  225. there was only one family that survived.

  226. The one word, compromise.

  227. Compromise.

  228. Remember from Genesis chapter three,

  229. he already said to the serpent,

  230. he said, hey,

  231. there's going to be two lions of people.

  232. There's going to be two types.

  233. There's only two types of people in the world.

  234. One that trusts God

  235. and one that does not trust God.

  236. That's what he's saying in Genesis chapter three.

  237. And now you see here,

  238. those two lions are happening.

  239. It's in play.

  240. But the problem here,

  241. where it really goes wrong,

  242. where it ends up to the point

  243. where God wipes out everyone,

  244. is because those two lions started to mix.

  245. Let's find out what happens here.

  246. The sons of God saw that the daughters of man

  247. were attractive.

  248. Now, there was a recent movie called Noah,

  249. starring Russell Crowe,

  250. maybe that I say recent,

  251. but it was a good few years ago now,

  252. where it really kind of fantasized

  253. and dramatized this story here.

  254. And some people are like,

  255. oh, the sons of God,

  256. were they the angels?

  257. So did angels come

  258. and actually start mixing with the human race?

  259. If we look at the context of what's happened here,

  260. the answer,

  261. I don't think it is the case.

  262. What we see here are two lions of people,

  263. the sons,

  264. the children,

  265. the lion,

  266. the offspring of Cain,

  267. and the offspring of Seth,

  268. and they are starting to mix.

  269. What does it mean here?

  270. The sons of God,

  271. which would be the lion of Seth,

  272. the good lion,

  273. okay,

  274. they saw that the daughters of man were attractive

  275. and they took as their wives any they chose.

  276. We go back now,

  277. Genesis chapter one,

  278. God created and saw creation

  279. and said that it was good.

  280. But then Eve in chapter three says,

  281. I saw the fruit

  282. and the fruit looked good,

  283. attractive.

  284. It's actually the same word there.

  285. And so suddenly in chapter three,

  286. man takes control

  287. and makes discerning choices themselves.

  288. I think this is good.

  289. And you see here in chapter six,

  290. the same thing.

  291. The sons of Seth look across

  292. and see the attractiveness of the daughters

  293. of the lion of Cain.

  294. And they say,

  295. I would like to choose that person as my wife.

  296. It starts to unravel

  297. when two lions start to mix.

  298. It starts to get corrupted

  299. when there is compromise.

  300. This is actually a good place

  301. to talk a little bit about,

  302. as those who are followers of Christ,

  303. one of the decisions that we're making,

  304. especially when it comes to those we are dating

  305. and those we are wanting to marry,

  306. are these people,

  307. ones that are in line with us.

  308. Later in the New Testament,

  309. talks about to not be yoked,

  310. to not be tied to unbelievers.

  311. Why?

  312. Because it's a bad idea.

  313. Because one person wants to go in this direction

  314. and the other wants to go in this direction.

  315. End of story.

  316. Why would you want to tie yourself

  317. to someone who is going in the opposite direction?

  318. We see here a good case study

  319. of when one lion that's supposed to be trusting in God

  320. looks over and says,

  321. I'm interested in that lion.

  322. I think they're attractive.

  323. I'm going to go over there.

  324. And you can see that starts to happen.

  325. And then the Lord said,

  326. my spirit shall not abide in man forever,

  327. for he is flesh.

  328. His days shall be 120 years.

  329. Again, going back to the beginning,

  330. he creates us out of dust

  331. and then he breathes life.

  332. We are both dust and the life of God.

  333. And God says here,

  334. okay, they are just flesh.

  335. They are alive because of my spirit.

  336. But now I'm going to limit it.

  337. And now it's going to be 120 years.

  338. There's a couple of interpretations with this

  339. that I'm not going to go through today.

  340. One is actually that timer,

  341. that countdown is basically saying,

  342. I'm going to give mankind 120 years to repent.

  343. This is the time for them to repent

  344. and to turn back.

  345. Why?

  346. Because if they don't,

  347. the flood's coming.

  348. That's one interpretation.

  349. Another one is that actually,

  350. remember last week,

  351. people lived up to 900 something years.

  352. But as you see,

  353. eventually mankind,

  354. maybe because of the decisions that we made,

  355. we actually end up around,

  356. everyone lives under 120 years.

  357. Whichever way you go,

  358. it's basically God saying,

  359. now there is a countdown.

  360. There is a countdown to repent.

  361. There is a countdown to go back

  362. and choose me again.

  363. And then carry on.

  364. Verse four,

  365. the Nephilim,

  366. who were the Nephilim?

  367. The word simply means the fallen ones.

  368. But if you carry on going,

  369. these were the sons of God

  370. and they bore children

  371. and these were the mighty men

  372. who were of old,

  373. the men of renown.

  374. So there are some places

  375. where it would depict giants,

  376. sons of angels who are coming.

  377. But really,

  378. I would just say that these are just big men.

  379. These were just big men who were warriors.

  380. And this isn't that hard to understand.

  381. There are big human beings around,

  382. even in our world right now.

  383. We probably live in the place,

  384. in the world,

  385. where maybe those here are

  386. of more smaller stature.

  387. But if you go to the west,

  388. if you go to the north,

  389. there are big human beings.

  390. Something that we have to

  391. kind of surrender here

  392. is we simply don't truly understand

  393. what mankind was developing like.

  394. Imagine someone's living for 900 years

  395. and he's eating,

  396. or she's eating fruit

  397. that comes from paradise.

  398. This food was nutritious.

  399. They're also working and farming

  400. for 900 years.

  401. Can you imagine how?

  402. So these human beings,

  403. it stands to reason,

  404. do not look the same as us.

  405. Does that make sense?

  406. I go back to England sometimes

  407. and I look,

  408. I go from average height here in Hong Kong

  409. to tiny, tiny in England.

  410. And if I went to America,

  411. it would be even worse.

  412. And I look and I'm like,

  413. okay, well, these human beings,

  414. there were probably some

  415. that were just bigger.

  416. And the Nephilim here

  417. were describing people

  418. that were mighty warriors.

  419. There are people in this world right now

  420. that are seven feet tall.

  421. These could be the ancestors

  422. of even someone like Goliath,

  423. around nine feet tall.

  424. So what we have here then

  425. is basically two lines,

  426. mixing, compromising.

  427. And what you end up is corruption.

  428. And this is where God looks.

  429. Remember chapter one,

  430. God sees creation,

  431. sees man and sees woman

  432. and says it was good,

  433. it was very good.

  434. But sadly,

  435. it only takes five chapters.

  436. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man

  437. was great in the earth

  438. and that every intention

  439. of the thoughts of his heart

  440. was only evil continually.

  441. Theologians call this concept

  442. total depravity.

  443. You look and you see

  444. the heart of man

  445. and you see the sin that exists.

  446. You're like, okay,

  447. I can see that people

  448. are not truly pure.

  449. This is the first thing

  450. that I really think

  451. we need to understand.

  452. That we sat here

  453. are not really good people.

  454. Psalm 14 says,

  455. there's no one who's good.

  456. Jeremiah 17 says,

  457. the heart is deceitful.

  458. Have you ever described someone,

  459. hey, no,

  460. but that person has a good heart.

  461. Yeah?

  462. That's actually unbiblical.

  463. Jesus himself said,

  464. there is no one good.

  465. And they're like,

  466. okay, well, what about,

  467. and I've joked about this before

  468. and I truly do mean it.

  469. What about the little babies?

  470. What about those little helpless babies

  471. like Lily?

  472. Like,

  473. Joe and Alex will tell you,

  474. Lily's a sinner.

  475. She'll scream

  476. whenever she doesn't get

  477. what she wants.

  478. Connor, you teach

  479. two to three-year-olds,

  480. you see the depravity on show

  481. amongst tiny little kids.

  482. Psalm 51 says,

  483. we were born in sin.

  484. But you're like,

  485. oh, yes, I know,

  486. but there are some people

  487. that are good.

  488. Here's the thing.

  489. There are some people

  490. who are really honest

  491. and really humble.

  492. Well, actually,

  493. I am inspired by something

  494. that Tim Keller said

  495. that actually there is no such thing

  496. as true humility

  497. amongst human beings.

  498. I look at someone,

  499. Caleb,

  500. I don't mean this about you,

  501. you're just here.

  502. I look at Caleb

  503. and I think he's just

  504. a really prideful kind of guy.

  505. Just really cocky.

  506. And I'm like,

  507. you know what?

  508. I don't want to be like Caleb.

  509. I want to be better than Caleb.

  510. I want to be more humble than Caleb.

  511. What am I doing?

  512. What am I exhibiting?

  513. Pride.

  514. Because I'm saying

  515. I'm better than him.

  516. Can you see?

  517. Even our thoughts.

  518. Think about the other

  519. good things that you do.

  520. Maybe the charity work

  521. that you do.

  522. Maybe the good intentions,

  523. the things that you do

  524. to try and care for other people.

  525. If you keep peeling back

  526. while you're doing those things,

  527. I think there's a

  528. people-pleasing element to it.

  529. I think there's a

  530. seeking people's approval

  531. in it.

  532. Even the good things.

  533. Can I convince you of this?

  534. That you are a sinner

  535. through and through.

  536. That there is no ability

  537. in us

  538. to have

  539. pure

  540. and good

  541. thoughts.

  542. Even when on the outside,

  543. it looks like it.

  544. Caleb,

  545. I'm just going to keep

  546. picking on you here.

  547. Here's a glass of water.

  548. Would you like to drink

  549. this water?

  550. It's quite hot in here.

  551. You would love to drink

  552. this water

  553. because it looks,

  554. it's clean.

  555. I got it from the water fountain

  556. that's just around there.

  557. Okay,

  558. you can drink it.

  559. One second.

  560. Sorry,

  561. that's gross.

  562. That's gross.

  563. Would you still like

  564. to drink this water?

  565. Okay,

  566. I may have picked

  567. the wrong person

  568. because I think Caleb

  569. really would just

  570. drink from this cup.

  571. Yeah.

  572. Even I won't drink

  573. from this cup anymore.

  574. Brothers and sisters,

  575. this is us.

  576. You may look

  577. and you see

  578. that you are,

  579. I'm a good person.

  580. I'm not that bad.

  581. Well,

  582. here's the point.

  583. You might even be 99%,

  584. but you're not 100%.

  585. And if we're not 100%,

  586. that means we can't

  587. truly rely on

  588. the thoughts

  589. that we have going on.

  590. There's something about us

  591. that is filled with sin.

  592. We are not good people

  593. who sin every now and again.

  594. We are sinners

  595. who are living out

  596. the way that we're living out.

  597. That's why we need a savior.

  598. I'm not going to drink from this.

  599. I'm just going to leave

  600. this right here.

  601. Please no one drink from it.

  602. Can you see,

  603. that's what total depravity is.

  604. And once you understand that,

  605. we will start to understand

  606. the rest of the passage here.

  607. The Lord saw that

  608. the wickedness of man

  609. was great

  610. and that every intention

  611. of the thoughts of his heart

  612. was only evil continually.

  613. And then the Lord regretted

  614. that he had made man

  615. on the earth

  616. and it grieved him

  617. to his heart.

  618. And later it says

  619. he was sorry for it.

  620. Just an interesting point here,

  621. an important point here.

  622. God's not like,

  623. oh my goodness,

  624. I'm so sorry,

  625. I wish I could have,

  626. I'm changing my mind

  627. about mankind.

  628. It's not that.

  629. What it is,

  630. is that it's anguish.

  631. It's anger.

  632. It's like a parent

  633. looking at a child

  634. who's living

  635. in a destructive way,

  636. not just to themselves,

  637. but to other people.

  638. It's the heartbreak

  639. that comes

  640. with looking at a child,

  641. looking at your own child

  642. and seeing them inflict pain

  643. on themselves

  644. and other people.

  645. It's that kind of regret.

  646. It's that kind of sorrow.

  647. It's that kind of anguish.

  648. And remember,

  649. God saw that his own children,

  650. Cain and Abel,

  651. were murdering each other.

  652. So if you're a parent,

  653. imagine one of your own kids

  654. murdering someone else,

  655. murdering one of the siblings.

  656. It's that kind of anguish.

  657. It's that kind of pain.

  658. It's that kind of regret.

  659. And he looks and he says,

  660. this is not good.

  661. Verse seven,

  662. and I will blot out man

  663. whom I have created

  664. from the face of the land,

  665. man and animals

  666. and creeping things

  667. and birds of the heavens,

  668. for I am sorry

  669. that I have made them.

  670. Of course,

  671. the fish survive

  672. because fish can swim

  673. in the ocean,

  674. which I need to ask God about.

  675. There's some really scary fish.

  676. I'll ask him about rats

  677. and pigeons as well,

  678. how they manage.

  679. You're right.

  680. I'm like,

  681. God,

  682. you wiped them out

  683. the first time.

  684. Just let them be.

  685. But somehow the rats

  686. and the pigeons,

  687. they came back.

  688. But the Chinese

  689. redeemed the pigeons

  690. and we added a little bit

  691. of salt onto it

  692. and it ends up being

  693. something delicious.

  694. Sorry,

  695. that's completely side note.

  696. And he wipes everyone out.

  697. And you're like,

  698. okay,

  699. well,

  700. this is it.

  701. This is the end.

  702. And then the most powerful

  703. word in scripture

  704. comes,

  705. but.

  706. Just like the but

  707. in Ephesians 2,

  708. when we were dead

  709. in our sins,

  710. but God.

  711. Now we see,

  712. verse eight,

  713. but Noah found favor

  714. in the eyes of God.

  715. So in the midst

  716. of both lines now,

  717. mixing to the point

  718. where actually

  719. there's no one left.

  720. Can you imagine

  721. within 10 generations,

  722. there is no one left

  723. who is worth saving.

  724. That's what compromise does.

  725. And if you're sat here going,

  726. I need to make a decision

  727. about a relationship.

  728. I need to make a decision

  729. about a job.

  730. I would encourage you,

  731. look at this passage

  732. and go,

  733. wait,

  734. where am I compromising

  735. in my life?

  736. Where am I actually

  737. making decisions

  738. that I am trying

  739. to justify myself

  740. based on my own flesh

  741. about what I like to see,

  742. but actually,

  743. it's ending up

  744. in compromise

  745. that ends up

  746. in corruption

  747. that ends up

  748. being really evil.

  749. If we're truly

  750. to understand

  751. the love of God

  752. and the grace of God,

  753. we must understand

  754. the wrath of God

  755. and the holiness of God.

  756. We have to understand

  757. both together.

  758. And we'll find out

  759. a little bit more here.

  760. But Noah found favor

  761. in the eyes of the Lord.

  762. Just a little bit more,

  763. let's keep going down.

  764. Verse nine,

  765. these are the generations

  766. of Noah.

  767. Noah was a righteous man,

  768. blameless in his generation.

  769. Noah walked with God.

  770. Whoa, we heard that before.

  771. We heard that in Enoch,

  772. that he was someone

  773. who walked with God together.

  774. What does that mean?

  775. In the midst of this generation,

  776. there was someone

  777. who was actually saying,

  778. hey, I'm just going

  779. to be different.

  780. I'm going to walk

  781. in a different way.

  782. Doesn't mean he's perfect.

  783. Next week,

  784. we're going to look

  785. at the end of Noah's life

  786. and it doesn't really

  787. end that well.

  788. So he's not perfect.

  789. When it says blameless here,

  790. all it means is that

  791. this was someone

  792. who was pursuing righteousness,

  793. who was trying

  794. to walk with God.

  795. That's all it was saying here.

  796. And now this family

  797. would be chosen.

  798. They would find favor

  799. in the eyes of God.

  800. And a little bit more,

  801. scripture expands here.

  802. Now, verse 11,

  803. now the earth was corrupt

  804. in God's sight

  805. and the earth was filled

  806. with violence.

  807. And God saw the earth

  808. and behold,

  809. it was corrupt.

  810. For all flesh

  811. had corrupted their way

  812. on the earth.

  813. You have to understand

  814. something about this

  815. because you're like,

  816. you might be sitting here

  817. going,

  818. I don't understand

  819. why God had to wipe that out,

  820. wipe the whole thing out.

  821. That's just cruel.

  822. It's just mean.

  823. It was unnecessary.

  824. He could have just helped

  825. the people who were kind of good

  826. and that would have been enough.

  827. But if you look into

  828. the word corrupt,

  829. the word corrupt there

  830. really meant that actually

  831. creation was getting destroyed.

  832. And so what he's doing,

  833. he's destroying the destroyed.

  834. As he was looking at mankind,

  835. spiraling out of control,

  836. following down

  837. this slippery slope of sin,

  838. what was happening

  839. was everything

  840. was becoming corrupt.

  841. At the beginning,

  842. it looked like a pure glass of water

  843. that had spit in it,

  844. but eventually now

  845. it just becomes

  846. this murky water

  847. that you see in oceans

  848. besides Hong Kong.

  849. Just unclear waters

  850. and then it gets worse

  851. and worse.

  852. And so he's like,

  853. the water is already destroyed.

  854. Society is already destroyed.

  855. And because it's destroyed,

  856. I must clean it all out

  857. and start again.

  858. That's what he's saying here.

  859. It's saying

  860. this is beyond repair.

  861. And something else

  862. that I think

  863. those of us who live in Hong Kong,

  864. we find this hard to understand.

  865. If you've spent time abroad,

  866. then you'll probably understand

  867. this a little bit more.

  868. It was said creation

  869. or culture was corrupt

  870. and that it was filled

  871. with violence.

  872. Hong Kong so happens to be,

  873. in my opinion,

  874. one of the safest places

  875. in the world.

  876. I'm happy to send my children

  877. on the MTR

  878. to go to wherever

  879. they need to go to

  880. and I'll be okay

  881. in terms of just how I feel

  882. whether they'll be safe.

  883. I remember telling Christina,

  884. isn't that good

  885. that our kids can find

  886. their own way home now?

  887. We don't even need to go

  888. pick them up anymore.

  889. We feel safe on the MTR

  890. because the signs

  891. are always there.

  892. If you've lived in London

  893. and if you've been

  894. in the underground system,

  895. it's confusing.

  896. New York is even worse.

  897. But Hong Kong,

  898. you'll be able to do it.

  899. And actually,

  900. she said something

  901. that was interesting.

  902. She was like,

  903. well, it is a good thing,

  904. but it's also a bad thing

  905. because then they're not

  906. really aware

  907. of the outside world.

  908. They're not really aware

  909. of what's going on outside,

  910. so when they go back,

  911. they'll be living

  912. in a way that's

  913. just unsafe.

  914. I remember this happened to me.

  915. Do you remember those,

  916. do you remember

  917. that thing called COVID

  918. where we spent three years

  919. trapped in one city

  920. and trapped in a very safe city?

  921. And so I remember

  922. just living life here

  923. to doing the COVID life here

  924. and it was all very safe

  925. and easy.

  926. And then three years on,

  927. we went back to England

  928. to visit our family

  929. and was just in a shopping center

  930. and pushing one of the kids,

  931. I can't remember which one,

  932. pushing one of the kids.

  933. And then I saw something

  934. in the shop.

  935. I was like,

  936. it's too hard to get to it.

  937. So I just left the pushchair

  938. with the child inside.

  939. And I was like,

  940. oh, you wait here.

  941. I'm going to go.

  942. And I'm saying,

  943. Hong Kong,

  944. that's pretty safe.

  945. You're all judging me now

  946. because I'm not even

  947. in Hong Kong, James.

  948. It was pretty safe.

  949. But then I walked like 10 steps

  950. and I was like,

  951. wait, we're not in Hong Kong.

  952. That could all disappear

  953. very quickly.

  954. I put the wrong child

  955. in the stroller.

  956. They can take the other one.

  957. So we lose that memory

  958. of actually what it's like

  959. to live in a society

  960. that's filled with violence

  961. and corruption.

  962. What are we actually

  963. fearing for our lives?

  964. And when you look at that,

  965. you're thinking,

  966. God, where is your justice?

  967. Where is your justice?

  968. Why aren't you judging

  969. those people?

  970. Why aren't you looking

  971. at those people and saying,

  972. why aren't you dealing with them?

  973. Why aren't you dealing

  974. with that evil?

  975. And yet you see here,

  976. God is dealing with that evil.

  977. He is dealing with it

  978. through what we can see here

  979. as wrath.

  980. Now, the word wrath there

  981. makes us think of just

  982. a violent, aggressive God

  983. trying to lash out,

  984. but that's not what it is.

  985. What he's doing is

  986. when he's defending something

  987. that he loves,

  988. something that he cherishes,

  989. and he sees it as getting corrupt,

  990. he sees it as getting evil,

  991. he sees that it's destroyed,

  992. then he has to operate.

  993. And we'll talk a little bit more

  994. about the wrath of God later.

  995. But Noah,

  996. but Noah found favor

  997. in the eyes of God.

  998. A lot of us,

  999. if we grew up listening

1000. to the song about Noah,

1001. we will then automatically think,

1002. whether we realize it or not,

1003. that the way to get saved

1004. is to be a good person.

1005. How am I going to be saved by God?

1006. How am I not going to drown

  1007. in the flood?

1008. I just have to be like Noah,

  1009. be a good person.

1010. That is not what Scripture

  1011. is saying here.

  1012. You can see here

  1013. that verse eight,

  1014. Noah finds favor

1015. in the eyes of God

  1016. before it's described

  1017. what he's like.

1018. When we see the words,

  1019. Noah found favor,

1020. what we think it means,

  1021. society has trained us

  1022. to think it means

  1023. Noah earned the right

  1024. to be saved.

  1025. Noah was good enough

  1026. that the teacher

  1027. looked kindly on him

1028. and decided to save him.

1029. That's not what it means.

  1030. What it means is

  1031. Noah found undeserved grace,

  1032. unmerited favor.

1033. You look at the families around,

  1034. whether it's church,

  1035. missionaries that go out

1036. and are really just living

1037. all out for the Lord

1038. and you look at them,

  1039. you're like,

1040. they are good, good people.

1041. And if you ask any single one of them,

  1042. they would say,

1043. no, we are not good.

  1044. We are only good

1045. because of the grace of God.

1046. So what we see here is

  1047. Noah is only good

1048. because of the grace of God.

  1049. If you ask Noah,

1050. if you were lucky enough

  1051. to actually spend time

1052. with Noah and his family,

  1053. it would be,

  1054. we don't really know

  1055. why we're picked.

1056. We probably deserve to be

  1057. in society outside

  1058. and yet somehow

  1059. grace found us.

  1060. I think that's something else.

1061. If we have to understand

  1062. total depravity,

  1063. we have to understand

  1064. something else,

1065. which is the concept of grace.

1066. that we didn't do anything

1067. to deserve what we have.

1068. That is a key component

  1069. to us then repenting

1070. and actually living lives of love,

  1071. giving freely

  1072. because we received freely.

  1073. Noah found favor

  1074. before he was described

1075. to be a righteous man,

  1076. blameless in his generation.

1077. But then he speaks to Noah.

1078. In verse 13, it says,

  1079. God said to Noah,

  1080. I have determined

1081. to make an end of all flesh

  1082. for the earth

  1083. is filled with violence

  1084. through them.

1085. Behold, I will destroy them

  1086. with the earth.

  1087. And then he goes

  1088. and gives instructions

1089. on how to make an ark.

  1090. We don't actually know

  1091. whether it's rained

1092. up until at this point,

  1093. but it's probably reasonable

1094. to assume that there was no flood.

1095. So God says to Noah,

1096. hey, you're going to need

1097. to build something very big

  1098. on dry land

1099. and it's going to take you

1100. about 100 years to build.

  1101. This makes me think,

  1102. grace finds Noah

1103. and then God gives him instructions

  1104. to do something

  1105. that is completely countercultural.

  1106. Imagine,

  1107. he has to sacrifice

1108. everything that he's been doing

  1109. for about 100 years

1110. to go and build this ark.

  1111. Now, remember,

  1112. granddad Methuselah is around.

  1113. dad Lamech is around

1114. and they spoke to Adam

1115. so they would have described

  1116. to Noah,

1117. hey, Adam had told us

  1118. about the original creation.

1119. He's told us about Eden.

1120. And so when Noah received

  1121. the instructions from God

  1122. to build this ark,

  1123. no doubt them two

1124. would have been in his ear

  1125. saying, do it.

  1126. Do it.

  1127. We are so exhausted

  1128. from the corruption.

  1129. We are so exhausted

  1130. from the violence.

  1131. God needs to come

  1132. in judgment

  1133. to save us.

  1134. Save us from who?

1135. To save us from ourselves.

  1136. Both our lines

  1137. are now compromised.

1138. We need to do this.

  1139. And so, no doubt,

  1140. with granddad

1141. and with dad in his ear,

  1142. he starts to build

  1143. this ark,

  1144. which would have been

1145. just an outrageous thing to do.

  1146. It would have taken

  1147. a long time.

1148. And it makes me think,

1149. when was the last time

  1150. we received instructions

  1151. from God,

  1152. or we felt convicted

  1153. to be different

1154. to the people around us.

1155. Not necessarily to go out

  1156. and build an ark,

1157. but to just follow God

  1158. and obey him.

  1159. So even though grace

  1160. found Noah,

  1161. yet Noah still

  1162. had to do something.

  1163. Because at this point,

  1164. he could have said,

  1165. God, that sounds crazy.

1166. I'm not going to build the ark.

  1167. Has anyone watched

  1168. Evan Almighty?

  1169. Steve Carell?

  1170. Quite a funny movie.

  1171. Not an actual depiction

  1172. of what happened here

  1173. in Genesis 6 and 7,

1174. but funny and close enough.

  1175. To do something

  1176. completely outrageous

  1177. that your friends

  1178. and that your family

  1179. don't truly understand.

1180. That is what Noah did here.

1181. That is what made him blameless,

1182. not because he was perfect,

1183. but because he was obedient.

1184. But because he was willing

  1185. to follow God.

  1186. Interestingly,

  1187. in 2 Peter 2,

  1188. it talks about Noah

  1189. how he's not only

  1190. building the ark,

  1191. he's actually also

  1192. warning people around him.

  1193. He's actually preaching

  1194. righteousness to those

  1195. around him.

  1196. So he was actually

1197. trying to build a church

1198. whilst he was doing this.

1199. So he gives up his career,

1200. gives up all the things,

  1201. it must have come

  1202. at great expense

  1203. in every single way,

1204. starts to build the ark,

  1205. and then he starts

  1206. to tell people,

  1207. his friends,

  1208. his family,

  1209. his neighbors,

  1210. repent.

  1211. Repent because the flood

  1212. is coming.

  1213. But your grandfather

  1214. is still alive.

  1215. Yes, but repent.

  1216. He's going to come

  1217. to him.

1218. He's going to die soon

  1219. and repentance

  1220. will be necessary.

  1221. And how many people

  1222. does Noah

  1223. successfully evangelize to?

  1224. Zero.

1225. He tries to bring people

  1226. to God

  1227. and they refuse

  1228. to go in.

  1229. This blesses me

  1230. as someone who tries,

  1231. not perfectly,

1232. tries to walk with God,

  1233. tries to pursue God,

  1234. tries to be obedient

  1235. to God,

  1236. sometimes not knowing

  1237. the fruit that will

  1238. come out of it.

1239. It brings me great comfort

  1240. to know there was

  1241. someone else

  1242. who was told

  1243. to build a boat

1244. in the middle of land

  1245. for a hundred years

  1246. preaching the same message

1247. and yet he got no one.

1248. What about that good neighbor?

  1249. Okay, surely,

1250. yes, there were violent people

1251. on the other side of town

  1252. that weren't listening,

1253. but surely that friendly neighbor

1254. that lived on the plot of land

  1255. next to Noah.

1256. Surely they would have been okay.

  1257. At the very least,

  1258. they probably weren't

  1259. trying to sabotage

  1260. his building project

1261. in the middle of the night.

1262. They were letting him continue

1263. to build this crazy thing

  1264. on the boat.

1265. Surely they would be okay.

  1266. But again,

  1267. here we have

  1268. no one response.

  1269. No one.

  1270. Not even the kind

  1271. of good people.

  1272. Not even the ones

1273. who were kind of kind.

  1274. That every intention

  1275. of the thoughts

  1276. of his heart

  1277. was only evil

  1278. continually.

1279. And so what do we have?

  1280. Why is this story

  1281. even here?

1282. So then he builds the ark.

  1283. Okay, verse 22

1284. at the end of chapter 6.

  1285. Noah did this.

1286. He did all that God

  1287. commanded him.

  1288. Didn't question.

  1289. Didn't add to it.

  1290. Didn't subtract to it.

  1291. Didn't make a deal

  1292. and negotiate

  1293. and say,

  1294. okay, God,

  1295. I hear you.

  1296. Something's going to happen

  1297. when granddad dies.

  1298. Okay, I'll build it,

1299. but can it not be so big?

1300. Because it will take forever.

  1301. You're only having

1302. my family in any way.

  1303. We'll figure it out.

  1304. Or what about

1305. you do this for me?

  1306. It wasn't.

  1307. It was just

  1308. he got the instructions

  1309. from God

  1310. and then he said,

  1311. and scripture just says,

  1312. and Noah did

  1313. all that God

  1314. had commanded him.

  1315. Again,

  1316. the true obedience

  1317. that comes,

1318. the grace that is needed,

  1319. but also the obedience

  1320. that is needed

  1321. for mankind

  1322. to be saved.

1323. And so he makes it.

  1324. Chapter 7 now.

1325. Then the Lord said to Noah,

  1326. go into the ark,

1327. you and all your household,

  1328. for I have seen

  1329. that you are righteous

1330. before me in this generation.

  1331. And then he gives

  1332. some instructions.

1333. on what kind of animals

  1334. to bring.

  1335. I always thought

1336. it was just two by two,

1337. which is how the song goes.

  1338. But actually,

  1339. there were also

  1340. seven pairs of animals

1341. that he would have to bring on,

1342. some clean and some unclean.

  1343. God was starting

  1344. to prepare the way

  1345. for a sacrificial system

  1346. where mankind

  1347. can be covered

  1348. and made holy again

1349. in front of a holy God.

1350. We won't talk about that today,

  1351. but he instructs him.

  1352. And again,

  1353. chapter 7,

  1354. verse 5,

  1355. and Noah did all

  1356. that the Lord

  1357. had commanded him

  1358. again.

  1359. And then,

1360. when he was 600 years old,

  1361. after 100 years

  1362. of building the ark,

1363. it's time to get on.

1364. He gets onto the ark,

  1365. and scripture here,

  1366. and it's really interesting,

  1367. it just says this,

  1368. verse 10,

  1369. and after seven days,

1370. the waters of the flood

  1371. came upon the earth.

  1372. After seven days.

  1373. Imagine building something

  1374. for 100 years

  1375. with people laughing

  1376. at you constantly,

  1377. ridiculing you constantly,

  1378. going,

1379. what on earth are you doing?

1380. This has never been done.

  1381. We don't even know

  1382. what you're building.

  1383. And finally,

  1384. there comes the day

  1385. after 100 years,

1386. you get on the boat,

1387. and the rain doesn't come.

  1388. For seven days.

  1389. Can you imagine

  1390. being the family,

1391. just sitting on the boat,

  1392. going,

  1393. Dad,

1394. did we just give up

  1395. all of our lives,

1396. lost all of our friends,

1397. and now we're still sat here

  1398. with no rain?

  1399. Again,

1400. not only was he preaching

  1401. righteousness for 100 years,

1402. not only was he obeying

  1403. for 100 years,

1404. it doesn't make sense sometimes.

  1405. And it doesn't come

  1406. at the time

1407. that you want it to come.

  1408. Can you imagine

  1409. the people,

  1410. the neighbors,

  1411. looking in

  1412. at the boat,

  1413. hey Noah,

  1414. what's up,

1415. how's that flood working out?

  1416. How's the boat?

  1417. Is it comfy?

  1418. Is there Wi-Fi?

  1419. Hey,

1420. when are you going to come out?

  1421. The ridicule.

  1422. I don't know,

  1423. I can't even guarantee

  1424. that I wouldn't be

  1425. one of those people

  1426. that woke up.

  1427. And yet,

  1428. seven days they waited.

  1429. But then,

  1430. finally,

  1431. chapter 7,

  1432. verse 11,

  1433. in the 600th year

  1434. of Noah's life,

  1435. in the second month,

  1436. on the 17th day

  1437. of the month,

1438. you can have no doubt

  1439. that Noah would remember

  1440. that day.

  1441. Exactly that day.

1442. When after all those years

  1443. of obedience,

  1444. it happens.

  1445. And it isn't just

  1446. a drizzly rain.

  1447. And the fountains

  1448. of the great deep

  1449. burst forth,

  1450. and the windows

  1451. of the heavens

  1452. were opened.

  1453. This wasn't just

  1454. a heavy rain,

  1455. people.

  1456. This was God

  1457. decreating creation.

  1458. The great depths

  1459. were opening up again.

  1460. God was saying,

1461. we're going to start again.

1462. This was the great reversal.

  1463. And no one,

  1464. no one,

1465. that Noah had preached to

  1466. would get on.

1467. But now it's starting to rain.

1468. Now the floods are happening.

1469. So you would have no doubt

1470. there would be some people

1471. who were starting to go,

  1472. oh,

  1473. maybe Noah was right.

  1474. Quick, quick,

  1475. grab your stuff.

  1476. Let's go.

  1477. Let's see if there's still time

1478. for us to get onto that ark.

  1479. Can you imagine

  1480. the screaming,

  1481. the wailing,

  1482. the death

  1483. that would be coming

  1484. upon creation

  1485. at that point.

1486. Later in the New Testament,

  1487. it talks about it,

  1488. that the people

1489. in the days of Noah

  1490. were eating,

  1491. drinking,

  1492. marrying,

  1493. just living life

  1494. as normal.

1495. But when that moment comes,

  1496. when that day comes,

1497. it is already too late.

1498. And so they get on the boat.

1499. They stay on the boat.

1500. And maybe the key word here

  1501. is this,

  1502. chapter 7,

  1503. verse 16.

  1504. And they went in

1505. as God had commanded him,

  1506. and the Lord

  1507. shut him in.

  1508. Do you remember

  1509. in Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  1510. I said there was a change

  1511. in word,

  1512. God and Lord.

  1513. The word God

  1514. was the one

1515. that was in Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1516. which talks about

  1517. the all-powerful God

  1518. creating things.

1519. And then in chapter 2,

  1520. he turns it

  1521. because he creates

  1522. man and woman,

1523. and then it becomes Lord,

  1524. which means Elohim,

  1525. which was not just

  1526. the power of God,

1527. but the presence of God.

  1528. It was the relational

  1529. aspect of God.

  1530. So you see here,

  1531. again,

  1532. the writer shows

  1533. two differences.

  1534. Chapter 7,

  1535. verse 16,

1536. and God had commanded them,

  1537. but then the Lord

  1538. shut him in.

  1539. The writer's here

  1540. showing us,

  1541. hey,

  1542. it's not,

  1543. God is all-powerful,

1544. but the one who saves

  1545. is a relational God.

  1546. The one who saves

  1547. isn't just power,

  1548. it's presence,

  1549. it's being with

  1550. his people.

1551. It tells you something else,

  1552. Noah himself

  1553. could not have

  1554. shut that door.

  1555. The Lord,

  1556. can you imagine,

  1557. the family gets on,

  1558. it's starting to flood,

  1559. the water is starting

  1560. to go up,

  1561. the boat's starting

  1562. to move,

  1563. and then his wife

  1564. will say,

  1565. Noah,

  1566. get everyone on,

  1567. close the door,

  1568. close the door,

  1569. and then Noah runs

  1570. and closes the door,

  1571. but he's 600 years old,

  1572. so he's probably

  1573. running quite slowly,

  1574. and then eventually

  1575. he closes the door,

  1576. and then it's like,

1577. did you close it properly?

  1578. Are you sure?

1579. Because if we have a leak,

1580. we could have a problem.

  1581. It is not that.

  1582. Sometimes we,

  1583. as Christians,

  1584. we think,

  1585. okay,

1586. what do I need to do

  1587. to be saved?

1588. Do I need to do

1589. the best that I can?

  1590. And then you might

  1591. ask that question,

  1592. is it enough?

1593. Am I being good enough?

1594. Am I reading the Bible enough?

  1595. Am I praying enough?

1596. From this story of old,

1597. that is not the way

  1598. you get saved.

1599. The way you get saved

1600. is if God looks at you

1601. and has favor on you.

  1602. You then trust

  1603. and obey him

  1604. and follow his instructions,

  1605. and the Lord

1606. will ultimately be the one

  1607. that shuts you in.

  1608. Can you imagine

1609. that door would have been

  1610. so heavy,

  1611. too heavy for Noah

  1612. to close,

  1613. and yet God,

  1614. the Lord,

  1615. sorry,

  1616. is the one

  1617. who shuts him in.

  1618. Can you imagine

  1619. just the assurance

1620. that he would have felt?

  1621. Oh,

  1622. thank goodness

1623. it's not down to me.

1624. I have that same fear

1625. when my wife tells me,

1626. did you close all the windows?

1627. Did you clean the toilet?

  1628. And I'm like,

  1629. yes?

  1630. And yet Noah here

  1631. knows for sure,

1632. I had nothing to do with this.

1633. The Lord is the one

  1634. who's shutting us in.

1635. If we're going to survive,

1636. it's going to be because of him.

1637. It's because he shut the door.

  1638. One last thing

1639. I want to show us.

  1640. We look at this

  1641. and we see some

  1642. of the misconceptions

  1643. that we had

  1644. about our own faith,

  1645. about ourselves.

  1646. We thought that maybe

1647. we are kind of good people.

  1648. This passage tells us

  1649. we are not.

  1650. There is total depravity.

  1651. We are not capable

  1652. of pure,

  1653. good thoughts.

  1654. Even our best intentions

  1655. and our best actions

  1656. are still laced

  1657. with selfishness

  1658. and fear

  1659. and insecurity

  1660. and pride.

  1661. Total depravity

1662. is what we see here.

  1663. We don't find favor

  1664. because we are

  1665. an A plus student.

  1666. We find favor

1667. because God shows us favor.

  1668. And yet then

  1669. our response is obedience.

  1670. Our response is obedience

  1671. in light of when

1672. we're told to do something

  1673. that doesn't really

  1674. truly make sense.

  1675. And from that,

  1676. the Lord saves us

  1677. and shuts us in.

  1678. But there's one

  1679. final thing here.

  1680. If we go back

  1681. to chapter 6,

  1682. verse 18,

  1683. God tells him

  1684. to build the ark

  1685. and he gives him

  1686. the dimensions.

  1687. Remember,

  1688. he doesn't have

  1689. an instruction manual.

  1690. Maybe that's why

  1691. it takes so long.

  1692. He does not have

  1693. Gemini to help him.

  1694. But then after that,

  1695. verse 18,

  1696. God says this,

  1697. but I will establish

  1698. my covenant with you

  1699. and you shall come

  1700. into the ark.

  1701. It's the first time

  1702. the word covenant

  1703. is used.

  1704. This relational God,

  1705. this God of love,

1706. that's about to pour out

  1707. his wrath

  1708. onto creation.

  1709. Says,

  1710. I will give you

  1711. a promise.

  1712. If you trust me,

  1713. if you obey me,

  1714. I promise you,

  1715. you and your family

  1716. will be saved.

  1717. Would you come

  1718. into the ark?

  1719. Wait,

  1720. God,

  1721. you're already

  1722. in the ark?

  1723. Why are you saying

  1724. come into the ark?

  1725. You should say

  1726. build the ark

1727. and go into the ark.

1728. But yet you tell me

  1729. to come in

  1730. to the ark.

  1731. Brothers and sisters,

1732. this is where we see

  1733. the foreshadowing

  1734. of Christ.

  1735. Where Christ says,

  1736. come,

  1737. abide

  1738. in me.

  1739. I am the ark.

1740. I am the only way

1741. that you can be saved.

  1742. Not that friendly

  1743. neighbor

  1744. who's giving you

  1745. cookies

  1746. while she's trying

  1747. to build the ark.

  1748. Sadly,

  1749. she won't make it.

  1750. Not just because,

1751. because it can't just be

  1752. because she's a kind

  1753. person.

  1754. Not how you are

  1755. striving to be

  1756. that grade A

  1757. student.

  1758. That's not going to

  1759. help you.

  1760. The only way

1761. that we can be saved

  1762. is if we get

  1763. into the ark.

  1764. You realize something.

  1765. When we look at

  1766. Christianity,

  1767. when we look at

  1768. how we live,

  1769. we're always thinking

  1770. about how do we

  1771. earn our way there?

  1772. How do we not

  1773. break the rules

  1774. is what we're

  1775. trying to say.

  1776. And again,

  1777. I think we need

1778. to tweak it a little bit.

  1779. That when we're

  1780. breaking the rules,

  1781. we haven't got this

  1782. angry God who's

  1783. trying to punish us.

  1784. When we're breaking

  1785. his rules,

  1786. what we're actually

  1787. doing is we're

  1788. breaking his heart.

  1789. And again,

  1790. every parent knows

  1791. this.

  1792. When you tell

  1793. your child,

  1794. don't do that.

  1795. Don't touch

  1796. that hot stove.

  1797. Okay?

  1798. From this moment

  1799. forth,

  1800. this is one of

  1801. the commandments

  1802. in the kitchen.

  1803. Do not touch,

  1804. do not put your

  1805. hand into that

  1806. thing that's

  1807. called the oven.

  1808. Do not do it.

  1809. And then you see

  1810. your children do it.

  1811. Because that's

  1812. what we do.

  1813. Right?

  1814. And then what

  1815. happens?

  1816. Yes,

  1817. they broke the rule,

  1818. but they've also

  1819. broke themselves,

  1820. their hand.

  1821. But most of all,

  1822. they've broken

  1823. your heart as a

  1824. parent.

  1825. Right?

  1826. Because they

  1827. didn't trust you.

  1828. And in doing

  1829. so,

  1830. they've hurt

  1831. themselves.

  1832. When we see

  1833. it that way,

  1834. we realize that

  1835. actually God is

  1836. a God of promise.

  1837. God is a God

  1838. of relationship.

  1839. God is a God

  1840. of love.

  1841. And he is the

  1842. one who shuts

  1843. us in.

  1844. It says,

  1845. everything dies.

  1846. Everything

  1847. goes.

  1848. He starts

  1849. again.

  1850. But next week,

  1851. we're going to see

  1852. actually some hope.

  1853. We're going to see

  1854. what he means

  1855. when he talks

  1856. about,

  1857. I'm never going

  1858. to do this

  1859. again.

  1860. We're going to

  1861. see what he

  1862. means when he

  1863. puts the

  1864. rainbow into

  1865. the sky.

  1866. We're going to

  1867. see what he

  1868. means when

  1869. creation starts

  1870. again.

  1871. But for now,

  1872. I want us just

  1873. to stop here.

  1874. There is going

  1875. to come a time

  1876. where the Lord

  1877. is going to

  1878. say,

  1879. I'm going to

  1880. shut the door

  1881. and it's going

  1882. to be too

  1883. late.

  1884. In that moment,

  1885. we won't have

  1886. a chance anymore.

  1887. It's in this

  1888. moment that we

  1889. can still say,

  1890. Christ,

  1891. I follow you.

  1892. I trust you.

  1893. And only you,

  1894. I realize you

  1895. are the only

  1896. way for me

  1897. to survive

  1898. is if I

  1899. obey you,

  1900. if I worship

  1901. you,

  1902. if I believe

  1903. in you.

  1904. I don't know

  1905. where you are

  1906. on the scale

  1907. of kind of

  1908. full-blown

  1909. sinner or

  1910. kind of sinner

  1911. or doing well,

  1912. trying your best,

  1913. but still sinner.

  1914. I'm here saying

  1915. it doesn't really

  1916. matter.

  1917. We all fall

  1918. short of the

  1919. glory of God.

  1920. but,

  1921. it doesn't,

  1922. again,

  1923. but,

  1924. but,

  1925. but,

  1926. but we all

  1927. justified freely

  1928. by his grace

  1929. as a gift

  1930. through the

  1931. Lord Jesus

  1932. Christ.

  1933. Get into

  1934. the ark.

  1935. Get into

  1936. the ark

  1937. before it's

  1938. too late.

  1939. It is in

  1940. Christ alone

  1941. that we can

  1942. be saved.

  1943. And you

  1944. might still

  1945. have questions

  1946. about the

  1947. wrath of God.

  1948. You might

  1949. still have

  1950. questions about

  1951. the love

  1952. of God.

  1953. And that's

  1954. where I

  1955. point you

  1956. to the

  1957. cross,

  1958. where the

  1959. wrath of

  1960. God and

  1961. the love

  1962. of God

  1963. meets.

  1964. Because the

  1965. God is also

  1966. God of

  1967. justice.

  1968. But in

  1969. that one

  1970. moment on

  1971. the cross,

  1972. he fulfills

  1973. both.

  1974. Mankind

  1975. can only be

  1976. saved by

  1977. clinging on

  1978. to the

  1979. tree.

  1980. Let us

  1981. pray.

  1982. Amen.

  1983. as we

  1984. finish up

  1985. here,

  1986. instead of

  1987. responding in

  1988. song,

  1989. we're going

  1990. to respond

  1991. in a moment

  1992. of just

  1993. reflection.

  1994. Lord,

  1995. if there is

  1996. any evil

  1997. thought in

  1998. us,

  1999. any

  2000. mistrust

  2001. of you,

  2002. any

  2003. misvaluing

  2004. of you,

  2005. we come

  2006. to you

  2007. and we

  2008. repent.

  2009. repent.

  2010. we see

  2011. that the

  2012. flood

  2013. is not

  2014. just

  2015. judgment,

  2016. but it's

  2017. salvation

  2018. through

  2019. judgment.

  2020. The same

  2021. waters that

  2022. clear the

  2023. earth of

  2024. sin are

  2025. the same

  2026. waters that

  2027. lift us

  2028. up towards

  2029. you.

  2030. And for

  2031. that we

  2032. are

  2033. grateful.

  2034. Let us

  2035. each spend

  2036. the moment

  2037. now just

  2038. in quiet

  2039. reflection.

  2040. As we

  2041. repent

  2042. and ask

  2043. Jesus for

  2044. you to

  2045. come.

  2046. Lord Jesus,

  2047. in some

  2048. ways we

  2049. sat here

  2050. today as

  2051. recipients of

  2052. your grace,

  2053. but also

  2054. observers of

  2055. violence and

  2056. corruption and

  2057. darkness in

  2058. the world.

  2059. We sit

  2060. here on

  2061. this ark

  2062. that is

  2063. you,

  2064. and we

  2065. are grateful.

  2066. We know

  2067. that every

  2068. thought and

  2069. intention of

  2070. ours is

  2071. still evil

  2072. continually,

  2073. but we also

  2074. know that

  2075. you now

  2076. live in

  2077. us.

  2078. And that

  2079. you are

  2080. working in

  2081. every part

  2082. of our

  2083. hearts,

  2084. cleaning

  2085. over our

  2086. sin,

  2087. covering us

  2088. with your

  2089. sacrifice.

  2090. and so

  2091. today we

  2092. sit and

  2093. we wait.

  2094. Just as

  2095. Noah did

  2096. for those

  2097. seven days

  2098. on the

  2099. boat

  2100. before the

  2101. rain came,

  2102. just as

  2103. he did

  2104. for the

  2105. 150 days

  2106. after the

  2107. rain subsided

  2108. and all

  2109. he could

  2110. see was

  2111. water.

  2112. and so we

  2113. sit and

  2114. we wait

  2115. for you.

  2116. And as we

  2117. wait, Lord,

  2118. would you

  2119. speak to

  2120. us?

  2121. Would you

  2122. remember us,

  2123. your covenant

  2124. with us,

  2125. your promise

  2126. to us?

  2127. we thank you,

  2128. Lord.

  2129. Thank you that

  2130. you came to

  2131. save us

  2132. while we

  2133. were still

  2134. sinners.

  2135. in your name

  2136. that we

  2137. pray.

  2138. Amen.
