  1. I've stolen the lectern Bible, don't tell anyone.

  2. As I say, we're going to do things perhaps a little bit differently today

  3. intense, but what a great thing to do during June.

  4. Just pick up the book of Romans because we're not able to kind of preach verse by verse through it.

  5. But as you, the more familiar you are with it, the more you'll see where the Apostle Paul is going,

  6. where he's coming from, and ultimately how we can know more of God through it.

  7. And I'm going to begin just by, in some sense, doing a little bit of a recap from last week.

  8. If you were here last week, don't worry, I'm not going to go into all the details, it's okay.

  9. But the book of Romans starts off with a big picture of humanity.

  10. And it presents to us God's plan for salvation, his plan to save us through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  11. But as we pointed out last week, it starts off in a bad place

  12. because he points out the disorder in our world and in our lives.

  13. And as we noted last week, we are all caught up in this sort of downward spiral.

  14. Whereas God made creation to be good, this disorder is taking us back into chaos.

  15. And so we find ourselves both to often be victims of that disorder.

  16. You know, we are harmed, we are hurt by those around us and by the systems and the failures.

  17. But also, if we're honest, we also begin to contribute to those downward spirals and to others.

  18. We become part of the culture.

  19. And the fact is, when Paul points out some of the stuff that is not part of God's plan,

  20. some of us will go, really?

  21. Because we're so caught up in the way just things are, in the culture that surrounds us.

  22. And Paul goes on to say that for those Gentiles he was talking to,

  23. so those who are not of Jewish ethnicity,

  24. he says, you know, they know what is right because God's made us to be that.

  25. And yet we have been caught up in this spiral of godlessness.

  26. And then he turns to those who have the Jewish law.

  27. And these laws, he says, they give you clear standards.

  28. But they don't do anything for you.

  29. All they do is they prove that you're lawbreakers.

  30. We actually see the things that God is pointing out.

  31. And that's part of his argument here.

  32. And as he starts writing and goes through to the third chapter,

  33. what we now call the third chapter of Romans,

  34. it's quite clear that there is no way out of this spiral of godlessness and wickedness.

  35. Whether we are Gentile or whether we are Jew,

  36. we are all under what he calls the power of sin.

  37. Let me just read before we come to confession.

  38. Chapter 3, verses 10 to 12.

  39. It is written,

  40. And then verse 23,

  41. And a little bit as we ended up last week,

  42. I think as we begin this,

  43. there's an opportunity just to recognise

  44. where we play our part in that picture of disorder.

  45. And before we come to confess our sins,

  46. just a moment to consider our own part in that picture.

  47. Now at this point,

  48. normally the minister would stand up and declare God's forgiveness.

  49. But instead of me doing that,

  50. what I'd like to do is I'd let the Bible talk.

  51. So I'm going to invite Margaret to come now

  52. and just read the reading that's set for today,

  53. which is Romans 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Romans 5:1–11

  54. Romans 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Romans 5:1–11

  55. Entitled, Peace and Hope.

  56. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith,

  57. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  58. through whom we have gained access by faith

  59. into this grace in which we now stand.

  60. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  61. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings,

  62. because we know that suffering produces perseverance,

  63. perseverance character, and character hope.

  64. And hope does not put us to shame,

  65. because God's love has been poured out into our hearts

  66. through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

  67. You see, at just the right time,

  68. when we were still powerless,

  69. Christ died for the ungodly.

  70. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person,

  71. though for a good person,

  72. someone might possibly dare to die.

  73. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this.

  74. While we were still sinners,

  75. Christ died for us.

  76. Since we have now been justified by his blood,

  77. how much more should we be saved

  78. from God's wrath through him?

  79. For if, while we were God's enemies,

  80. we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son,

  81. how much more, having been reconciled,

  82. shall we be saved through his life?

  83. Not only is this so,

  84. but we also boast in God

  85. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  86. through whom we have now received reconciliation.

  87. This is the word of the Lord.

  88. Thanks be to God.

  89. Amazing verses.

  90. Some big words.

  91. These glorious verses from chapter 5 of Romans.

  92. Because in it contains the good news of Jesus.

  93. And I just want to take us through it again, really.

  94. Unpacking it.

  95. I'm not trying to do anything clever today.

  96. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith.

  97. What does it mean to be justified?

  98. It means to be declared right.

  99. A voice that says,

  100. good.

  101. You have been made right in God's eyes.

  102. How has that happened?

  103. It's through faith.

  104. Faith.

  105. In Hebrews 11,

  106. the writer defines faith as being

  107. confidence in what we hope for

  108. and assurance about what we do not see.

  109. It's a great definition of faith.

  110. It's about trust.

  111. It's about belief.

  112. It's about claiming that thing

  113. that God has sort of declared or done in heaven

  114. and bringing it into our own lives

  115. by the gift of faith.

  116. So it's about trust.

  117. It's about belief.

  118. That is the way we access all of God's riches here for us.

  119. And so if we've been justified through faith,

  120. what do we have?

  121. We have peace with God.

  122. So whereas before we were enemies

  123. caught in this spiral of godlessness,

  124. contributing to his anger

  125. about what was going wrong in the world,

  126. we are no longer enemies.

  127. And not that.

  128. It's not just a ceasing of enmity.

  129. No.

  130. We are connected.

  131. We are given fullness.

  132. The biblical word shalom is ours

  133. as we are justified by faith.

  134. As we stand before God himself,

  135. our holy God,

  136. we now have peace with.

  137. And then it says,

  138. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  139. That is what we are now able to do.

  140. We are able to boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  141. What is that?

  142. Well,

  143. I spoke a couple of times now

  144. about God's kingdom,

  145. about the fact that God's kingdom

  146. is where God reigns and rules.

  147. And we experience that kingdom

  148. both now,

  149. but not fully.

  150. Now,

  151. but not yet.

  152. Because when we come to know Jesus

  153. and we stand in that peace

  154. that he has made for us,

  155. we ourselves are born again.

  156. It's like we become a new creation.

  157. And that's just like a first taste

  158. of what we are hoping for,

  159. which is when this whole world is renewed,

  160. where as Jesus returns,

  161. the whole creation

  162. becomes what it really should be,

  163. where all the wrongs are righted,

  164. the tears are wiped away.

  165. But more than that,

  166. like a resurrection,

  167. our bodies,

  168. the creation around us

  169. will cease to creak and crack,

  170. but will give glory to God

  171. because God is fully present with us.

  172. Just as the presence of God

  173. came into the tabernacle of the temple,

  174. we await the day

  175. when the whole creation

  176. is going to be full of God's glory.

  177. We meet him face to face.

  178. We're fully made

  179. for what we're made for.

  180. And that's the hope we have.

  181. And so we boast in that hope

  182. because we know it's going to happen.

  183. That's what we're looking forward to.

  184. Hope is one of these words

  185. that sometimes we think of.

  186. It's like sort of wishful thinking.

  187. Not in the Bible.

  188. Hope is the hook

  189. that we have for the future.

  190. And the more we know about what's coming,

  191. the more we can boast in it

  192. and glory in it.

  193. And that hope is the glory of God,

  194. his presence fully amongst us,

  195. God coming home, as it were,

  196. into our world.

  197. But remarkably,

  198. it's not just a sort of future thing.

  199. that Paul says we're going to experience.

  200. He says,

  201. I'll cover the next verses in a little bit,

  202. but it says,

  203. and hope does not put us to shame

  204. because God's love

  205. has been poured out into our hearts

  206. through the Holy Spirit

  207. who has been given to us.

  208. So that future,

  209. wow,

  210. of God being present fully,

  211. his glory flowing everywhere,

  212. we can taste a bit of that

  213. because of the Holy Spirit.

  214. It becomes like a down payment,

  215. a deposit of that future

  216. that is to come.

  217. And by his Holy Spirit,

  218. that love,

  219. that presence

  220. comes into our lives.

  221. That is good news.

  222. And that glory

  223. means that we are glorious

  224. because we become temples

  225. of God's spirit,

  226. his very presence with us,

  227. a meeting point

  228. of humanity

  229. and God.

  230. That's us.

  231. If we believe in Jesus,

  232. if we are justified by faith

  233. and stand in peace

  234. with him.

  235. Now,

  236. that is essentially

  237. the Christian good news.

  238. So if you're new to that,

  239. I hope that's clear.

  240. I hope I've explained

  241. some of these jargon words

  242. that we sometimes use.

  243. For many of us,

  244. that's not a new message.

  245. It's perhaps one

  246. we need to revisit

  247. more often in our hearts.

  248. But many of us

  249. will be a bit stuck

  250. because our experience

  251. of life

  252. is not of the glory

  253. and the wonders

  254. and the peace.

  255. It's actually one

  256. which you might characterize

  257. by suffering.

  258. We're still at the whim

  259. of that downward spiral

  260. where we experience

  261. illness,

  262. death,

  263. death

  264. and harm.

  265. And

  266. I think

  267. when Paul is writing

  268. to these Christians

  269. in Rome

  270. who would be no different

  271. to you and me

  272. and experience

  273. the rough and tumbles

  274. of life,

  275. in fact you might say

  276. that they're probably

  277. under more pressure

  278. as a super minority group

  279. in a Roman empire

  280. which wasn't really up

  281. for subversive movements

  282. like Christianity.

  283. Suffering was

  284. part of

  285. their experience.

  286. Often for their faith,

  287. but for other reasons

  288. as well.

  289. And when we're caught

  290. what feels like

  291. in that downward spiral

  292. we're like,

  293. well what difference

  294. does that make?

  295. I don't feel any different.

  296. You might feel a bit different.

  297. You might have a sense

  298. of hope

  299. which does make

  300. a big difference

  301. but day to day

  302. I'm still facing

  303. death

  304. and difficult things.

  305. and it prevents us

  306. doesn't it

  307. having that hope

  308. it begins to fade

  309. it gets foggy

  310. because

  311. the day to day life

  312. kind of cuts in on it

  313. and starts to

  314. dim our vision

  315. of what it's about

  316. our experience

  317. is perhaps

  318. more difficult

  319. and we start to wonder

  320. don't we

  321. whether God is good.

  322. and I think

  323. Paul has

  324. folk like us

  325. in mind

  326. as he's writing

  327. these glorious truths

  328. because

  329. he talks about

  330. suffering

  331. and as we're

  332. called to boast

  333. in the hope

  334. of the glory of God

  335. as we hold up

  336. that vision

  337. for what God

  338. has got for us

  339. his presence

  340. coming to be

  341. with us

  342. and we taste that

  343. in the Holy Spirit

  344. he says this

  345. not only so

  346. but we also

  347. glory

  348. we sort of boast

  349. in our sufferings

  350. because we know

  351. that suffering

  352. produces perseverance

  353. perseverance

  354. character

  355. and character

  356. hope

  357. and

  358. he acknowledges

  359. that suffering

  360. is difficult

  361. and

  362. he's wondering

  363. you know

  364. what it means

  365. well he's saying

  366. well no

  367. it has meaning

  368. the fact that we suffer

  369. and there's this

  370. tension between

  371. the hope

  372. that we're longing

  373. for

  374. our future

  375. destination

  376. as it were

  377. and our own

  378. experience

  379. shows us

  380. really that

  381. suffering has

  382. meaning

  383. and that it

  384. actually is

  385. working

  386. something

  387. that will bring

  388. more hope

  389. into our lives

  390. because he's

  391. working us

  392. changing our

  393. character

  394. changing our

  395. outlook

  396. and it means

  397. that suffering

  398. is not meaningless

  399. so if you live

  400. without the idea

  401. of a God

  402. and a future

  403. hope

  404. suffering is

  405. very difficult

  406. because it

  407. becomes sort

  408. of meaningless

  409. it's just

  410. I'm just here

  411. accidentally

  412. and I'm just

  413. experiencing all

  414. this stuff

  415. whereas Paul

  416. is not shy

  417. to pull out

  418. that future

  419. hope

  420. and say

  421. look

  422. look at that

  423. and even

  424. what you're

  425. going through

  426. is working

  427. to achieve

  428. that

  429. God is

  430. working in

  431. you to

  432. build those

  433. things

  434. and you

  435. will

  436. become

  437. stronger

  438. and you

  439. will know

  440. more of

  441. God's grace

  442. in your life

  443. as a result

  444. and so

  445. if you're

  446. in that

  447. position

  448. you're thinking

  449. life's

  450. hard

  451. and this

  452. future glory

  453. feels a long

  454. way off

  455. he encourages

  456. us to do

  457. two things

  458. I think

  459. and that

  460. as I said

  461. to look forward

  462. is one angle

  463. he also encourages

  464. us to look

  465. back

  466. because if we're

  467. feeling like

  468. God's not

  469. for us

  470. we need

  471. to go to

  472. a place

  473. where we

  474. know

  475. God

  476. is for

  477. us

  478. and that's

  479. why he

  480. points us

  481. back

  482. to the cross

  483. of Jesus

  484. I'll just

  485. read verses

  486. 6 and 8

  487. it says

  488. you see

  489. at just

  490. the right

  491. time

  492. when we

  493. were still

  494. powerless

  495. Christ

  496. died

  497. for the

  498. ungodly

  499. very rarely

  500. will anyone

  501. die for

  502. a righteous

  503. person

  504. though maybe

  505. for a good

  506. person

  507. someone might

  508. possibly

  509. dare to

  510. die

  511. but God

  512. demonstrates

  513. his love

  514. for us

  515. in this

  516. while we

  517. were still

  518. sinners

  519. Christ

  520. died

  521. for us

  522. so he

  523. wants us

  524. to remember

  525. that if we

  526. feel there's

  527. a tension

  528. between our

  529. suffering

  530. and what's

  531. ahead for

  532. us

  533. just think

  534. about how

  535. much of

  536. a tension

  537. how much

  538. of a

  539. divide

  540. there is

  541. between

  542. the holy

  543. God

  544. and us

  545. who are

  546. caught in

  547. that downward

  548. spiral

  549. and even

  550. then

  551. even undeserving

  552. he came

  553. in the person

  554. of Jesus

  555. to die

  556. for us

  557. that's how

  558. big his

  559. love is

  560. for us

  561. that's how

  562. all embracing

  563. his love

  564. is

  565. and then

  566. his logic

  567. goes well

  568. if that's

  569. so

  570. if he did

  571. that for

  572. us

  573. then how

  574. much

  575. more

  576. will

  577. his

  578. saving

  579. work

  580. be

  581. effective

  582. and be

  583. applied

  584. to us

  585. who have

  586. faith

  587. in him

  588. I'll just

  589. read the

  590. last verse

  591. since we

  592. now have

  593. been justified

  594. by his

  595. blood

  596. Jesus'

  597. blood

  598. how much

  599. more

  600. shall we

  601. be saved

  602. from God's

  603. wrath

  604. through him

  605. for if

  606. while we

  607. were God's

  608. enemies

  609. we were

  610. reconciled to

  611. him through

  612. the death

  613. of his

  614. son

  615. how much

  616. more

  617. having been

  618. reconciled

  619. shall we

  620. be saved

  621. through his

  622. life

  623. not only

  624. is this

  625. so

  626. but we

  627. also boast

  628. in God

  629. through our

  630. Lord Jesus

  631. Christ

  632. through whom

  633. we have

  634. now received

  635. reconciliation

  636. see if our

  637. lives are

  638. immersed in

  639. Jesus

  640. his story

  641. becomes

  642. ours

  643. and if we

  644. think about

  645. his sufferings

  646. as he was

  647. betrayed

  648. tortured

  649. and killed

  650. if that's

  651. his story

  652. and how

  653. that led

  654. to

  655. resurrection

  656. and to

  657. the

  658. reconciliation

  659. of the

  660. whole of

  661. creation

  662. back to

  663. God

  664. well

  665. don't you

  666. think God

  667. can use

  668. our smaller

  669. sufferings

  670. our challenges

  671. our difficulties

  672. as part of

  673. his plan

  674. for salvation

  675. there's

  676. nothing

  677. wasted

  678. in God's

  679. economy

  680. so if

  681. you

  682. your family

  683. are going

  684. through all

  685. sorts of

  686. rubbish

  687. right now

  688. Paul wants

  689. to assure

  690. you

  691. the Holy

  692. Spirit

  693. wants to

  694. assure

  695. you

  696. that there

  697. is nothing

  698. that God

  699. will not

  700. use

  701. to actually

  702. ultimately

  703. bring about

  704. a brighter

  705. hope

  706. for you

  707. and for

  708. this world

  709. because as

  710. we look

  711. to him

  712. as we look

  713. back to

  714. what Jesus

  715. did for

  716. us

  717. and we

  718. have him

  719. set for

  720. us

  721. even as

  722. we boast

  723. in him

  724. it's amazing

  725. Paul uses

  726. that word

  727. several times

  728. in the passage

  729. you know when

  730. you boast

  731. of something

  732. you just can't

  733. stop talking

  734. about hey

  735. look

  736. have you seen

  737. this

  738. it's great

  739. if we boast

  740. it encourages

  741. us to put

  742. him front

  743. and centre

  744. as we

  745. do that

  746. hope

  747. grows

  748. peace

  749. settles

  750. and love

  751. flows

  752. hope

  753. grows

  754. peace

  755. settles

  756. and love

  757. flows

  758. peace

  759. so again

  760. just take

  761. a moment

  762. to recognise

  763. where you're

  764. at with

  765. this

  766. in a moment

  767. we'll sing

  768. a song

  769. which

  770. again

  771. in some

  772. sense

  773. retells

  774. the story

  775. of what

  776. Jesus

  777. has done

  778. for us

  779. and if

  780. we believe

  781. that

  782. if we cling

  783. on to that

  784. if we put

  785. our confidence

  786. confidence

  787. in what

  788. Jesus

  789. has done

  790. for

  791. we will

  792. trust

  793. that by

  794. his Holy

  795. Spirit

  796. God is

  797. growing hope

  798. bringing

  799. greater peace

  800. into our

  801. lives

  802. and that

  803. love

  804. which may

  805. feel like a

  806. trickle at the

  807. moment from

  808. God

  809. will flow

  810. and overflow

  811. flow

  812. so I'm just

  813. going to

  814. pause

  815. and allow

  816. the Holy

  817. Spirit

  818. some space

  819. to say

  820. what he

  821. needs to

  822. say to

  823. you

  824. to bring

  825. home

  826. this gospel

  827. this good

  828. news

  829. into your

  830. life

  831. Lord Jesus

  832. if you

  833. died for

  834. us

  835. if you

  836. were willing

  837. to get

  838. to that

  839. length

  840. whilst we

  841. were still

  842. sinners

  843. whilst we

  844. were still

  845. throwing up

  846. the muck

  847. and destruction

  848. of

  849. godlessness

  850. and wickedness

  851. if you were

  852. willing to

  853. die for us

  854. then

  855. how much

  856. more

  857. will you

  858. continue

  859. to use

  860. every part

  861. of our

  862. lives

  863. for your

  864. glory

  865. help us

  866. to cling

  867. on by

  868. faith

  869. to trust

  870. in what

  871. you've

  872. done

  873. for us

  874. to be

  875. confident

  876. that we

  877. now stand

  878. before you

  879. god

  880. father god

  881. full peace

  882. we want to

  883. receive

  884. once again

  885. that

  886. fullness

  887. from you

  888. you pour

  889. out your

  890. love into

  891. our hearts

  892. we pray

  893. amen
