  1. Thank you for the welcome this morning and it's good to be here with you.

  2. And just a brief kind of overview before we have our reading.

  3. ! And for those of you that have been here through the whole series, you might recognise some of the flow of this letter to the Romans.

  4. It was written by Paul when he was in Corinth, sent to the church in Rome, which was a mixed congregation of Jewish and Gentile Christians.

  5. And there was a bit of tension between these two groups and Jewish believers treasured their rituals, their Jewish rituals, and incorporated parts of that into their newfound faith.

  6. The Gentile Christians were questioning, well, why is this necessary?

  7. And so we come across this in this recurring theme in a lot of the New Testament churches.

  8. Paul in his letter starts with what you might say is bad news.

  9. Every one of us has sinned, he says, and whether we're Jew or Gentile, whether we're religious or not, whether we're respectable or not, we all fall short of God's glory.

  10. And that, says Paul, is a problem.

  11. But then comes wonderful good news.

  12. We're not made right with God by trying harder or by being better.

  13. We're justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

  14. And then Paul moves beyond forgiveness and onto transformation.

  15. And the Holy Spirit, he says, transforms us, changes us from the inside out, enabling us to live lives that honour God.

  16. And so, Paul says, the Christian life is not just about getting to heaven one day.

  17. It's about being more Christ-like today.

  18. And finally, the letter explores how the gospel shapes relationships in the church and in society.

  19. And Christians are called to live humbly, to love sacrificially, to welcome one another despite differences that we might have.

  20. And to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God.

  21. And chapter 13, where our reading comes from, continues that practical theme of how we should live as Christians.

  22. And so, Ros is going to bring our reading now.

  23. Thank you, Ros.

  24. So, the reading is from Paul's letter to the Romans, chapter 13, verses 7 to 14.

    Romans 13:7–14

  25. Give to everyone what you owe them.

  26. If you owe taxes, pay taxes.

  27. If revenue, then revenue.

  28. If respect, then respect.

  29. If honour, then honour.

  30. Let no debt remain outstanding.

  31. Accept the continuing debt to love one another.

  32. For whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

  33. The commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet.

  34. And whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command.

  35. Love your neighbour as yourself.

  36. Love does no harm to a neighbour.

  37. Therefore, love is the fulfilment of the law.

  38. And do this, understanding the present time.

  39. The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber,

  40. because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

  41. The night is nearly over.

  42. The day is almost here.

  43. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light.

  44. Let us behave decently as in the daytime,

  45. not in carousing and drunkenness,

  46. not in sexual immorality and debauchery,

  47. not in dissension and jealousy.

  48. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,

  49. and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

  50. This is the word of the Lord.

  51. Thanks be to God.

  52. So it's quiz day today,

  53. so before we get into this reading,

  54. a show of hands please.

  55. Who enjoys reading a good novel when they're away on holiday?

  56. Oh wow, very good.

  57. Forget the holidays.

  58. Anyone here read a newspaper daily?

  59. Cover to cover?

  60. Not quite, okay.

  61. Anyone here read instruction manuals?

  62. Men, put your hands down.

  63. Yeah, and what about reading stuff on your phone?

  64. Anyone read stuff on your phone?

  65. The Bible?

  66. Yeah.

  67. Emails?

  68. Text messages?

  69. Church WhatsApp group?

  70. Yeah?

  71. Okay.

  72. Put your hands up if you've ever started a book and never finished it.

  73. Yeah?

  74. Very good.

  75. Anyone here regularly skips to the last chapter to see what happens,

  76. and then reads the rest of the book,

  77. knowing, yeah, yeah, my wife does it every single book she reads.

  78. Bizarre to me, but yeah.

  79. Some books are easy reads, aren't they?

  80. A detective novel maybe, a travel guide,

  81. maybe even a good autobiography.

  82. But then there are books that demand a bit more.

  83. And for many of us, I guess,

  84. Romans sits firmly in that second category.

  85. But it's not difficult because Paul just wanted to confuse us.

  86. He's opening our eyes to life-changing revelation.

  87. The greatest news the world has ever heard.

  88. And I hope you are enjoying this series,

  89. which I think is coming to an end pretty soon.

  90. Let's just pray, shall we?

  91. Father, as we come this morning,

  92. we come with curiosity and with humility

  93. and with expectancy.

  94. And Lord, we pray that your written word

  95. and the spoken word

  96. would become a living word in our hearts and our lives.

  97. Thank you, Lord.

  98. Amen.

  99. Amen.

  100. So I know in recent weeks

  101. you've been looking at some of these chapters

  102. that really can stretch our minds

  103. and sometimes make us feel a bit uncomfortable.

  104. And I think today's passage, in some ways,

  105. is another one of those.

  106. It has an implicit reference to obedience.

  107. A word which is kind of out of fashion

  108. a little bit at the moment.

  109. We like to celebrate independence

  110. and self-expression

  111. and doing life my way.

  112. But obedience,

  113. even the word itself sometimes,

  114. can make us bristle a bit.

  115. Perhaps it reminds us of childhood

  116. when maybe a parent said something like,

  117. do what I say because that's what I say.

  118. And we just wanted to do the exact opposite.

  119. And I think there's something in many of us

  120. that resists being told what to do.

  121. But when Paul speaks about obedience,

  122. he's not talking about a reluctant compliance

  123. through gritted teeth.

  124. He's describing something much deeper.

  125. Something that gets to the very heart

  126. of the Christian life.

  127. In Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  128. Paul writes these wonderfully honest words.

  129. I do not understand what I do.

  130. For what I want to do,

  131. I do not do.

  132. But what I hate,

  133. I do.

  134. Thank goodness for his honesty.

  135. Here's the great Apostle Paul

  136. admitting that he struggles.

  137. And his frustration comes

  138. because he desperately wants

  139. to do the right thing.

  140. He wants to obey.

  141. And the struggle is between

  142. a changed heart

  143. and a fallen nature

  144. that still pulls us

  145. in an opposite direction.

  146. And if we're honest,

  147. I guess this affects many of us.

  148. But deep down,

  149. for a Christian,

  150. there is a genuine longing

  151. to please the Lord,

  152. even when we fail.

  153. And the psalmist understood this

  154. long before Paul.

  155. I'm just going to quickly go through

  156. some verses in Psalm 119.

  157. There's an obvious delight

  158. for David, the writer,

  159. of loving God's law

  160. and meditating on it

  161. and treasuring it.

  162. Just a few verses.

  163. Verse 10,

  164. I seek you with all my heart.

  165. Do not let me stray

  166. from your commands.

  167. Verse 16,

  168. I delight in your decrees.

  169. I will not neglect your word.

  170. Verse 20,

  171. Your soul is consumed

  172. with longing

  173. for your laws

  174. at all times.

  175. Verse 24,

  176. Your statutes

  177. are my delight.

  178. They are my counsellors.

  179. Verse 33,

  180. Teach me, O Lord,

  181. to follow your decrees.

  182. Then I will keep them

  183. to the end.

  184. 34,

  185. Give me understanding

  186. and I will keep your law

  187. and obey it

  188. with all my heart.

  189. Verse 44,

  190. I've put my hope

  191. in your laws.

  192. I will obey your law

  193. forever and ever.

  194. And I could go on

  195. forever and ever.

  196. Psalm 119 is very long.

  197. A hundred and however many verses.

  198. This longing

  199. to obey

  200. is one of the marks

  201. of someone

  202. who truly

  203. belongs

  204. to God.

  205. And they,

  206. maybe,

  207. there's someone

  208. here this morning

  209. and you think,

  210. oh, hang on.

  211. I'm not sure about that,

  212. Martin.

  213. Aren't we

  214. people of grace?

  215. Aren't we free

  216. from the law?

  217. That's a great question.

  218. And the answer is yes,

  219. we are.

  220. We are people of grace.

  221. We are free from the law.

  222. But we need to understand

  223. what that means.

  224. Through Christ,

  225. we're no longer

  226. under the law

  227. as a means

  228. of earning

  229. God's acceptance.

  230. We're no longer

  231. condemned

  232. by the penalty

  233. of the law

  234. or enslaved

  235. by the power

  236. of sin

  237. as we fail

  238. to live up

  239. to the law.

  240. grace has

  241. set us free

  242. from all those things.

  243. Yes.

  244. But grace

  245. hasn't made

  246. obedience

  247. irrelevant.

  248. God's commands

  249. still

  250. reveal

  251. his character

  252. and his will

  253. for his people.

  254. And our obedience

  255. doesn't buy

  256. God's love.

  257. Our obedience

  258. grows

  259. out of

  260. God's love

  261. for us.

  262. And so the real

  263. question is this.

  264. If every Christian

  265. has this desire

  266. to obey

  267. and yet still

  268. battles

  269. with weakness,

  270. then how do we grow?

  271. How do we move

  272. from good intentions

  273. to faithful

  274. living

  275. as a follower

  276. of Jesus?

  277. Well,

  278. Paul's answer

  279. in Romans 13

  280. is simplicity

  281. itself.

  282. The key thing

  283. is love.

  284. Love

  285. is the key

  286. to obedience.

  287. Love

  288. is the

  289. fulfilling

  290. of the law.

  291. Verses

  292. 9 to 10.

  293. The commandments

  294. you shall not

  295. commit adultery,

  296. you shall not

  297. murder,

  298. you shall not

  299. steal,

  300. you shall not

  301. covet,

  302. and whatever

  303. other commands

  304. there are,

  305. are summed up

  306. in this one

  307. command.

  308. Love your

  309. neighbour as

  310. yourself.

  311. Love does no

  312. harm to a

  313. neighbour,

  314. therefore love

  315. is the

  316. fulfilment

  317. of the law.

  318. Love is what

  319. makes obedience

  320. possible.

  321. one of the

  322. commentators

  323. I was looking

  324. at

  325. mentioned

  326. someone

  327. unnamed

  328. who said

  329. this,

  330. love

  331. everyone

  332. perfectly

  333. and you

  334. can do

  335. whatever you

  336. want.

  337. Love

  338. everyone

  339. perfectly

  340. and you

  341. can do

  342. whatever you

  343. want.

  344. And that

  345. sounds

  346. almost

  347. dangerous

  348. until we

  349. realise that

  350. a heart

  351. filled with

  352. Christ's

  353. love

  354. won't want

  355. to do

  356. anything

  357. that

  358. dishonours

  359. God

  360. or harms

  361. other people.

  362. And that's

  363. exactly where

  364. Paul takes

  365. us in

  366. this passage.

  367. Charles Price,

  368. some of you

  369. may have heard

  370. of him,

  371. was a Bible

  372. teacher who

  373. was speaking

  374. at a

  375. conference I

  376. went to

  377. many years

  378. ago and

  379. he put it

  380. like this

  381. and I've

  382. never forgotten

  383. it and

  384. fortunately

  385. it's recorded

  386. in one of

  387. his commentaries

  388. that I'm

  389. just going

  390. to recite

  391. almost word

  392. for word.

  393. The

  394. indwelling

  395. Holy Spirit

  396. transforms

  397. the Ten

  398. Commandments

  399. from external

  400. demands

  401. to internal

  402. promises.

  403. Instead of

  404. an angry

  405. word telling

  406. you what

  407. you must

  408. not do

  409. the law

  410. becomes a

  411. prophetic

  412. guarantee

  413. of what

  414. Christ will

  415. accomplish

  416. in your

  417. life.

  418. because

  419. Christ lives

  420. inside of

  421. us,

  422. the statement

  423. you shall

  424. not steal

  425. is no

  426. longer a

  427. rule we

  428. must obey,

  429. instead it

  430. becomes a

  431. promise from

  432. God.

  433. Because my

  434. spirit is at

  435. work within

  436. you, you'll

  437. find that you

  438. no longer

  439. have the

  440. desire or

  441. the need

  442. to steal

  443. and so you

  444. shall not

  445. steal.

  446. will.

  447. The era

  448. of grace

  449. is not

  450. the

  451. abolition

  452. of the

  453. law

  454. but its

  455. supernatural

  456. fulfilment.

  457. The law

  458. tells us

  459. what pleases

  460. God

  461. that grace

  462. gives us

  463. the living

  464. presence of

  465. Jesus

  466. in our

  467. lives

  468. enabling us

  469. to actually

  470. live it

  471. out.

  472. And that

  473. I think

  474. is a

  475. helpful

  476. backdrop

  477. to this

  478. reading

  479. this morning

  480. that we're

  481. just going

  482. to briefly

  483. run through.

  484. Paul begins

  485. verse 8

  486. with a wonderful

  487. kind of

  488. transition.

  489. In the

  490. previous verses

  491. he's been

  492. talking about

  493. paying what

  494. we owe.

  495. Taxes

  496. belong to

  497. the government

  498. he says

  499. revenue

  500. belongs to

  501. those who

  502. collect it

  503. respect

  504. belongs to

  505. those in

  506. authority

  507. etc.

  508. Christians

  509. are to be

  510. people who

  511. settle their

  512. accounts.

  513. So he

  514. writes

  515. let no

  516. debt

  517. remain

  518. outstanding.

  519. Paul's

  520. concern is

  521. not about

  522. borrowing

  523. per se

  524. it's with

  525. unpaid

  526. debts

  527. promises

  528. made to

  529. repay

  530. but never

  531. kept.

  532. But then

  533. he makes

  534. a remarkable

  535. turnaround

  536. and having

  537. told us

  538. not to

  539. leave debts

  540. outstanding

  541. unpaid

  542. he speaks

  543. of one

  544. debt

  545. that is

  546. never

  547. fully

  548. paid.

  549. Let no

  550. debt

  551. remain

  552. outstanding

  553. he says

  554. except

  555. the

  556. continuing

  557. debt

  558. to love

  559. one

  560. another.

  561. Every

  562. other debt

  563. should

  564. eventually

  565. disappear

  566. this one

  567. never

  568. does.

  569. you owe

  570. the debt

  571. of love

  572. today

  573. you give

  574. love

  575. today

  576. tomorrow

  577. you still

  578. owe love

  579. and so

  580. you give

  581. it again

  582. and then

  583. next week

  584. and next

  585. month

  586. and next

  587. year

  588. for the

  589. rest of

  590. your life.

  591. love

  592. an early

  593. church

  594. father

  595. Oregon

  596. I think

  597. that's

  598. how you

  599. pronounce

  600. it

  601. or

  602. origin

  603. I'm

  604. not

  605. sure

  606. said

  607. this

  608. the debt

  609. of love

  610. remains

  611. with us

  612. permanently

  613. we

  614. we pay

  615. we pay

  616. it

  617. every

  618. day

  619. and forever

  620. owe

  621. it

  622. Alexander

  623. the Great

  624. you've

  625. probably

  626. heard of

  627. the great

  628. commander

  629. was inspecting

  630. his troops

  631. one night

  632. and he came

  633. across a young

  634. soldier who

  635. was asleep

  636. while on

  637. guard

  638. duty

  639. that was

  640. a very

  641. serious

  642. offence

  643. and the

  644. penalty

  645. was often

  646. death

  647. and Alexander

  648. the Great

  649. ordered this

  650. terrified

  651. soldier

  652. to stand

  653. up in

  654. front of

  655. him

  656. what's

  657. your name

  658. the emperor

  659. demanded

  660. and the

  661. young man

  662. looked at

  663. the ground

  664. and quietly

  665. replied

  666. it's

  667. Alexander

  668. sir

  669. and this

  670. great

  671. conqueror

  672. paused

  673. had he

  674. heard

  675. correctly

  676. he said

  677. boy

  678. what's

  679. your

  680. name

  681. it's

  682. Alexander

  683. sir

  684. and he

  685. stared him

  686. in the

  687. eyes

  688. he says

  689. what's

  690. your

  691. name

  692. he said

  693. it's

  694. Alexander

  695. sir

  696. and he

  697. said

  698. well

  699. soldier

  700. change

  701. your

  702. behaviour

  703. or

  704. change

  705. your

  706. name

  707. in

  708. Romans

  709. 13

  710. Paul

  711. reminds

  712. us

  713. that

  714. Christians

  715. bear

  716. an even

  717. greater

  718. name

  719. we're

  720. called

  721. followers

  722. of

  723. Christ

  724. we belong

  725. to

  726. Jesus

  727. we

  728. carry

  729. his

  730. name

  731. and we'll

  732. be familiar

  733. with these

  734. words in

  735. John 13

  736. words of

  737. Jesus

  738. a new

  739. command I

  740. give you

  741. love one

  742. another

  743. as I have

  744. loved you

  745. so you

  746. must love

  747. one another

  748. and by

  749. this

  750. everyone

  751. will know

  752. that you

  753. are my

  754. disciples

  755. if you

  756. love

  757. one

  758. another

  759. and a

  760. reminder

  761. Paul

  762. isn't

  763. saying

  764. that we

  765. earn

  766. God's

  767. love

  768. by good

  769. behaviour

  770. rather

  771. that we

  772. belong

  773. to Christ

  774. and

  775. therefore

  776. our lives

  777. should

  778. increasingly

  779. reflect

  780. his

  781. character

  782. we love

  783. because

  784. he

  785. first

  786. loved

  787. us

  788. and our

  789. behaviour

  790. will tell

  791. people

  792. who we

  793. are

  794. we

  795. carry

  796. the

  797. name

  798. Christian

  799. and

  800. love

  801. is

  802. what

  803. they

  804. should

  805. see

  806. and

  807. now

  808. maybe

  809. you're

  810. sitting

  811. there

  812. thinking

  813. to

  814. yourselves

  815. again

  816. hang on

  817. Martin

  818. I'm

  819. not

  820. sure

  821. about

  822. this

  823. either

  824. that's

  825. okay

  826. but

  827. it's

  828. not

  829. that

  830. easy

  831. and

  832. you're

  833. right

  834. it's

  835. not

  836. that

  837. easy

  838. some

  839. people

  840. are

  841. very

  842. easy

  843. to

  844. love

  845. others

  846. require

  847. a bit

  848. more

  849. grace

  850. that's

  851. human

  852. nature

  853. but

  854. the

  855. answer

  856. is

  857. that

  858. God

  859. has

  860. never

  861. asked

  862. us

  863. to

  864. do

  865. this

  866. in

  867. our

  868. own

  869. strength

  870. Romans

    Romans 5:5

  871. chapter

  872. 5

  873. verse

  874. 5

  875. says

  876. this

  877. God's

  878. love

  879. has

  880. been

  881. poured

  882. into

  883. our

  884. hearts

  885. through

  886. the

  887. Holy

  888. Spirit

  889. so

  890. notice

  891. the

  892. source

  893. it's

  894. not

  895. our

  896. natural

  897. kindness

  898. or

  899. our

  900. natural

  901. personality

  902. it's

  903. God's

  904. own

  905. love

  906. that

  907. has

  908. been

  909. poured

  910. into

  911. our

  912. hearts

  913. so

  914. I just

  915. want to

  916. quickly

  917. suggest

  918. five

  919. very

  920. practical

  921. aspects

  922. of this

  923. love

  924. this

  925. love

  926. that

  927. we're

  928. called

  929. to

  930. show

  931. to

  932. others

  933. firstly

  934. this

  935. kind

  936. of

  937. love

  938. becomes

  939. a

  940. reality

  941. as

  942. we

  943. learn

  944. to

  945. live

  946. in

  947. it

  948. Paul

  949. prays

  950. in

  951. Ephesians

  952. 3

  953. that

  954. believers

  955. would

  956. grasp

  957. how

  958. wide

  959. and long

  960. and high

  961. and deep

  962. is the

  963. love of

  964. Christ

  965. and before

  966. we can

  967. reflect

  968. Christ's

  969. love

  970. surely

  971. we need

  972. to

  973. understand

  974. just

  975. how

  976. much

  977. we

  978. are

  979. loved

  980. by

  981. him

  982. we

  983. need

  984. to

  985. grasp

  986. that

  987. to

  988. learn

  989. and

  990. to

  991. understand

  992. how

  993. much

  994. we're

  995. loved

  996. secondly

  997. then

  998. comes

  999. our

  1000. willingness

  1001. to

  1002. surrender

  1003. ourselves

  1004. to

  1005. the

  1006. Holy

  1007. Spirit

  1008. left

  1009. to

  1010. ourselves

  1011. perhaps

  1012. I'm

  1013. just

  1014. speaking

  1015. for

  1016. myself

  1017. but

  1018. I

  1019. know

  1020. that

  1021. selfishness

  1022. and

  1023. anger

  1024. and

  1025. bitterness

  1026. and

  1027. resentment

  1028. come

  1029. all too

  1030. naturally

  1031. but

  1032. when we

  1033. yield

  1034. those

  1035. things

  1036. to

  1037. the

  1038. Holy

  1039. Spirit

  1040. he

  1041. produces

  1042. something

  1043. that we

  1044. can't

  1045. produce

  1046. in

  1047. ourselves

  1048. and

  1049. as

  1050. Paul

  1051. writes

  1052. in

  1053. Galatians

  1054. the

  1055. fruit

  1056. of

  1057. the

  1058. Spirit

  1059. is

  1060. love

  1061. love

  1062. is

  1063. the

  1064. work

  1065. of

  1066. the

  1067. Holy

  1068. Spirit

  1069. in

  1070. us

  1071. before

  1072. we

  1073. then

  1074. direct

  1075. that

  1076. towards

  1077. others

  1078. so

  1079. learning

  1080. to

  1081. live

  1082. in

  1083. this

  1084. love

  1085. learning

  1086. what

  1087. it's

  1088. about

  1089. surrendering

  1090. ourselves

  1091. to the

  1092. Holy

  1093. Spirit

  1094. and

  1095. then

  1096. thirdly

  1097. Paul

  1098. says

  1099. this

  1100. love

  1101. is

  1102. something

  1103. about

  1104. being

  1105. a

  1106. deliberate

  1107. choice

  1108. and in

  1109. Colossians

  1110. he talks

  1111. about

  1112. putting

  1113. on

  1114. love

  1115. in the

  1116. same

  1117. way

  1118. that

  1119. you

  1120. put

  1121. on

  1122. a

  1123. coat

  1124. each

  1125. morning

  1126. we

  1127. choose

  1128. to

  1129. forgive

  1130. we

  1131. choose

  1132. to

  1133. seek

  1134. peace

  1135. we

  1136. choose

  1137. to

  1138. be

  1139. patient

  1140. to

  1141. other

  1142. people

  1143. married

  1144. couples

  1145. who've

  1146. spent

  1147. decades

  1148. together

  1149. know

  1150. that

  1151. love

  1152. is

  1153. far

  1154. more

  1155. than

  1156. a

  1157. feeling

  1158. it's

  1159. a

  1160. daily

  1161. decision

  1162. there

  1163. was a

  1164. married

  1165. couple

  1166. who

  1167. were

  1168. going

  1169. through

  1170. very

  1171. difficult

  1172. times

  1173. and

  1174. the

  1175. lady

  1176. came

  1177. to

  1178. her

  1179. church

  1180. pastor

  1181. and

  1182. said

  1183. pastor

  1184. I

  1185. just

  1186. need

  1187. to

  1188. tell

  1189. you

  1190. I'm

  1191. afraid

  1192. I

  1193. think

  1194. we're

  1195. going

  1196. to

  1197. get

  1198. a

  1199. divorce

  1200. we've

  1201. just

  1202. talked

  1203. about

  1204. what

  1205. some

  1206. of

  1207. those

  1208. practicalities

  1209. are

  1210. he

  1211. says

  1212. well

  1213. is

  1214. this

  1215. you

  1216. know

  1217. have

  1218. you

  1219. reached

  1220. the

  1221. end

  1222. of

  1223. the

  1224. road

  1225. !

  1226. I'm

  1227. sorry

  1228. I

  1229. don't

  1230. even

  1231. like

  1232. him

  1233. let

  1234. alone

  1235. love

  1236. him

  1237. you

  1238. know

  1239. he

  1240. resents

  1241. everything

  1242. I

  1243. do

  1244. we

  1245. can't

  1246. even

  1247. talk

  1248. without

  1249. bickering

  1250. he's

  1251. never

  1252. in the

  1253. house

  1254. if he

  1255. gets

  1256. a chance

  1257. he'll

  1258. go

  1259. down

  1260. the

  1261. local

  1262. bar

  1263. it's

  1264. just

  1265. we've

  1266. reached

  1267. the

  1268. end

  1269. of

  1270. the

  1271. road

  1272. and

  1273. the

  1274. pastor

  1275. said

  1276. well

  1277. you

  1278. know

  1279. sometimes

  1280. regrettably

  1281. these

  1282. things

  1283. happen

  1284. but

  1285. before

  1286. you

  1287. go

  1288. ahead

  1289. with

  1290. any

  1291. paperwork

  1292. will

  1293. you

  1294. do

  1295. one

  1296. !

  1297. come

  1298. back

  1299. in

  1300. three

  1301. months

  1302. time

  1303. but

  1304. in

  1305. the

  1306. meantime

  1307. I

  1308. want

  1309. you

  1310. to

  1311. go

  1312. home

  1313. and

  1314. I

  1315. want

  1316. you

  1317. to

  1318. act

  1319. as

  1320. though

  1321. you

  1322. love

  1323. him

  1324. to

  1325. the

  1326. ends

  1327. of

  1328. the

  1329. earth

  1330. act

  1331. as

  1332. though

  1333. he

  1334. is

  1335. the

  1336. love

  1337. of

  1338. your

  1339. life

  1340. and

  1341. then

  1342. come

  1343. back

  1344. in

  1345. three

  1346. months

  1347. time

  1348. we'll

  1349. talk

  1350. about

  1351. how

  1352. you

  1353. can

  1354. make

  1355. a

  1356. divorce

  1357. as

  1358. pleasant

  1359. as

  1360. you

  1361. can

  1362. so

  1363. anyway

  1364. !

  1365. she

  1366. came

  1367. back

  1368. three

  1369. months

  1370. later

  1371. with

  1372. her

  1373. husband

  1374. holding

  1375. hands

  1376. we've

  1377. fallen

  1378. in love

  1379. again

  1380. she

  1381. said

  1382. I

  1383. did

  1384. what

  1385. you

  1386. said

  1387. and

  1388. it

  1389. wasn't

  1390. easy

  1391. but

  1392. we

  1393. love

  1394. each

  1395. other

  1396. they

  1397. chose

  1398. love

  1399. love

  1400. is a

  1401. choice

  1402. fourthly

  1403. Philippians

  1404. chapter

  1405. two

  1406. Paul

  1407. talks

  1408. about

  1409. not

  1410. making

  1411. ourselves

  1412. the

  1413. centre

  1414. of

  1415. attention

  1416. but

  1417. thinking

  1418. about

  1419. others

  1420. before

  1421. we're

  1422. thinking

  1423. about

  1424. ourselves

  1425. and

  1426. love

  1427. flourishes

  1428. when we

  1429. become

  1430. more

  1431. interested

  1432. in how

  1433. we can

  1434. love

  1435. other

  1436. people

  1437. and

  1438. then

  1439. finally

  1440. from

  1441. verse

  1442. 11

  1443. in our

  1444. passage

  1445. from

  1446. Romans

  1447. today

  1448. Peter

  1449. adds

  1450. another

  1451. important

  1452. dimension

  1453. to

  1454. this

  1455. practical

  1456. thing

  1457. about

  1458. love

  1459. the

  1460. day

  1461. is

  1462. coming

  1463. he

  1464. says

  1465. because

  1466. you see

  1467. there's

  1468. an urgency

  1469. about

  1470. love

  1471. life

  1472. is

  1473. short

  1474. opportunities

  1475. don't

  1476. last

  1477. forever

  1478. we

  1479. can't

  1480. afford

  1481. to

  1482. nurse

  1483. grudges

  1484. for

  1485. years

  1486. Christians

  1487. are to

  1488. live

  1489. with an

  1490. awareness

  1491. that

  1492. Christ

  1493. is

  1494. coming

  1495. again

  1496. it's

  1497. time

  1498. to

  1499. wake

  1500. up

  1501. throw

  1502. off

  1503. the

  1504. darkness

  1505. and

  1506. put

  1507. on

  1508. the

  1509. armour

  1510. of

  1511. light

  1512. as

  1513. the

  1514. reading

  1515. said

  1516. we

  1517. don't

  1518. know

  1519. what's

  1520. around

  1521. the

  1522. corner

  1523. so

  1524. we

  1525. love

  1526. every

  1527. day

  1528. is

  1529. another

  1530. opportunity

  1531. to

  1532. live

  1533. in a

  1534. way

  1535. that

  1536. reflects

  1537. the

  1538. Lord

  1539. we

  1540. belong

  1541. to

  1542. to

  1543. live

  1544. up

  1545. to

  1546. the

  1547. name

  1548. Christian

  1549. so

  1550. I'm

  1551. going

  1552. to

  1553. wrap

  1554. up

  1555. now

  1556. with

  1557. something

  1558. practical

  1559. how

  1560. do

  1561. we

  1562. begin

  1563. paying

  1564. this

  1565. lifelong

  1566. debt

  1567. what

  1568. does

  1569. that

  1570. mean

  1571. this

  1572. afternoon

  1573. or

  1574. tomorrow

  1575. three

  1576. questions

  1577. I don't

  1578. want to

  1579. show of

  1580. hands

  1581. this

  1582. time

  1583. have

  1584. you

  1585. quarreled

  1586. or

  1587. fallen

  1588. out

  1589. with

  1590. someone

  1591. if

  1592. you

  1593. have

  1594. do

  1595. something

  1596. about

  1597. it

  1598. today

  1599. this

  1600. afternoon

  1601. or

  1602. tomorrow

  1603. give

  1604. them

  1605. a ring

  1606. write

  1607. them

  1608. a

  1609. letter

  1610. drop

  1611. them

  1612. an

  1613. email

  1614. maybe

  1615. even

  1616. go

  1617. and

  1618. knock

  1619. on

  1620. the

  1621. door

  1622. find

  1623. a

  1624. way

  1625. to

  1626. say

  1627. sorry

  1628. even

  1629. if

  1630. you

  1631. don't

  1632. think

  1633. it's

  1634. your

  1635. fault

  1636. maybe

  1637. you've

  1638. not

  1639. quarreled

  1640. with

  1641. someone

  1642. have

  1643. you

  1644. neglected

  1645. a

  1646. friend

  1647. is

  1648. there

  1649. someone

  1650. that

  1651. you

  1652. used

  1653. to

  1654. be

  1655. really

  1656. close

  1657. with

  1658. and

  1659. you've

  1660. kind

  1661. of

  1662. drifted

  1663. away

  1664. and

  1665. now

  1666. you

  1667. don't

  1668. bother

  1669. trying

  1670. to

  1671. contact

  1672. them

  1673. why

  1674. don't

  1675. you

  1676. call

  1677. them

  1678. or

  1679. message

  1680. them

  1681. see

  1682. how

  1683. they

  1684. are

  1685. see

  1686. that

  1687. they're

  1688. okay

  1689. maybe

  1690. that's

  1691. not

  1692. you

  1693. do

  1694. you

  1695. need

  1696. to

  1697. say

  1698. thank

  1699. you

  1700. more

  1701. often

  1702. than

  1703. you

  1704. do

  1705. to

  1706. the

  1707. people

  1708. that

  1709. you

  1710. love

  1711. most

  1712. deeply

  1713. to

  1714. your

  1715. family

  1716. your

  1717. close

  1718. friends

  1719. if

  1720. you

  1721. do

  1722. how

  1723. about

  1724. this

  1725. afternoon

  1726. or

  1727. tomorrow

  1728. find

  1729. a way

  1730. to

  1731. say

  1732. thank

  1733. you

  1734. but

  1735. above

  1736. all

  1737. let's

  1738. ask

  1739. God

  1740. to

  1741. help

  1742. us

  1743. love

  1744. as

  1745. Jesus

  1746. loved

  1747. us

  1748. because

  1749. when

  1750. his

  1751. love

  1752. fills

  1753. our

  1754. hearts

  1755. the

  1756. debt

  1757. of

  1758. love

  1759. isn't

  1760. a

  1761. burden

  1762. that

  1763. we

  1764. carry

  1765. it's

  1766. a

  1767. joyful

  1768. privilege

  1769. that

  1770. we

  1771. pay

  1772. and

  1773. we

  1774. pay

  1775. again

  1776. and

  1777. we

  1778. pay

  1779. again

  1780. and

  1781. we

  1782. pay

  1783. again

  1784. and

  1785. again

  1786. let's

  1787. pray

  1788. father

  1789. we

  1790. do

  1791. thank

  1792. you

  1793. for

  1794. your

  1795. word

  1796. to

  1797. us

  1798. we

  1799. thank

  1800. you

  1801. that

  1802. it

  1803. helps

  1804. us

  1805. living

  1806. lives

  1807. where

  1808. we

  1809. aspire

  1810. to

  1811. follow

  1812. your

  1813. guidelines

  1814. your

  1815. commandments

  1816. your

  1817. teaching

  1818. your

  1819. example

  1820. Lord

  1821. we

  1822. want

  1823. to

  1824. be

  1825. known

  1826. as

  1827. a

  1828. people

  1829. of

  1830. love

  1831. fill

  1832. us

  1833. again

  1834. with

  1835. your

  1836. Holy

  1837. Spirit

  1838. that

  1839. people

  1840. might

  1841. know

  1842. that

  1843. we

  1844. are

  1845. your

  1846. disciples

  1847. because

  1848. of

  1849. the

  1850. way

  1851. we

  1852. love

  1853. one

  1854. another

  1855. thank

  1856. you

  1857. Lord

  1858. Amen
