  1. It's good to be back with you all.

  2. As Gabe was sharing about having a passion for Bible translations,

  3. I was like, you know what?

  4. In order to have a passion for Bible translations

  5. ! and getting it out into the world,

  6. you first must have a passion for the Bible.

  7. If not, then what's the point of it, right?

  8. You won't get fired up to try and get the Word out there

  9. if you're actually not fired up for the Word itself.

  10. And I think that's what we're trying to do here.

  11. We're trying to cultivate and nurture in us

  12. a passion for the Word.

  13. I just got back from England

  14. and I got to visit a lot of different churches,

  15. some of the churches that I grew up in

  16. and just different kind of places

  17. and had a lot of conversations with past mentors

  18. and brothers and sisters with churches that are doing well

  19. and churches that are struggling.

  20. And often the question always is,

  21. well, how do we have a church?

  22. What's a good church?

  23. And I was like, you know what?

  24. I don't even know.

  25. But I do know what God is looking for.

  26. I was reminded even as we were worshipping in John 4

  27. where Jesus himself says,

  28. the Father is looking for worshippers

  29. who worship him in what?

  30. In spirit and in truth.

  31. Paul talks to the church in Corinth

  32. in 1 Corinthians 14 and says,

  33. I will sing with my mind

  34. and I will sing with my spirit.

  35. Right?

  36. So you need both.

  37. You need the Word

  38. and then you also need the Holy Spirit.

  39. And in order to have that truth

  40. is to go into the Word.

  41. That's why I keep trying to shame you

  42. to bringing your physical Bible in.

  43. It's an important part of my journey.

  44. And as we're gathering here,

  45. we're just saying,

  46. it's got to be about the Word.

  47. And actually, hold us accountable.

  48. If you ever come into church,

  49. and actually, I joke and laugh,

  50. but you can actually go into churches

  51. and who somehow manage to go through

  52. a whole service without

  53. really acknowledging the Bible or Christ.

  54. It is possible.

  55. I assure you, it is possible.

  56. But we gathered here.

  57. That's surely what we have to be about.

  58. And for us to have that passion

  59. for the Word itself.

  60. So just an encouragement to you.

  61. If it's something that you're thinking about,

  62. please go and talk to Gabe

  63. a lot more about it as well.

  64. So I just got back.

  65. I was away for three Sundays.

  66. Went to what was the formerly Great Britain.

  67. But less so great now.

  68. It's been a good few weeks.

  69. Lots has happened since that time.

  70. Alex, Lee and Cara have welcomed the new baby.

  71. Two couples got engaged.

  72. So lots of things have happened in the time away,

  73. which is very exciting.

  74. But as someone who did grow up in England,

  75. I'm most concerned right now of just the wait.

  76. The wait that continues

  77. because it's not coming home again.

  78. It's great to watch the England footballers

  79. win in a meaningful game last night, of course.

  80. But the wait is very real.

  81. 60 years waiting.

  82. The term, it's coming home,

  83. was made popular 30 years ago

  84. where the song, The Three Lions, came.

  85. And of course, it's a painful, painful song

  86. that we keep singing to ourselves

  87. every four years.

  88. And the wait is very, very real.

  89. But actually, being in England,

  90. you get used to waiting.

  91. I realized having not been there for a few years,

  92. waiting, even in restaurants,

  93. waiting for someone to come and take my order,

  94. waiting for the food to come,

  95. waiting to get their attention so I can pay them.

  96. All of it is just, I'm like, wow.

  97. I realized since I came back,

  98. I came back two days ago,

  99. I realized I understand why

  100. because we all use those QR codes now

  101. and we order here

  102. and we don't have to talk to anyone,

  103. which I think there's a downside to.

  104. There's so much waiting.

  105. So much waiting.

  106. There's so much waiting

  107. when it's even for trains and buses.

  108. Just seeing constantly the sign saying delayed.

  109. And I realized I'd gotten so used to Hong Kong life

  110. when I came back this morning.

  111. Francis and I, we walked to the MTR station

  112. and I glanced and I saw four minutes

  113. on the MTR platform.

  114. Four minutes!

  115. How dare the MTR make me wait for four minutes?

  116. But true to Hong Kong form,

  117. it doesn't come in four minutes

  118. because suddenly after two minutes,

  119. it turns to arriving.

  120. I was like, praise the Lord, all is right.

  121. But in England, oh my goodness,

  122. in England, waiting is a very, very real thing.

  123. Today, I'm going to be talking about the wait.

  124. We're going to be talking about what it means to wait.

  125. The question I want to ask you is,

  126. what are you waiting for?

  127. What are you waiting for?

  128. Everyone is waiting for something.

  129. I'm currently waiting for my Taobao order.

  130. That's something.

  131. And that's annoying.

  132. I'm someone who, when I buy something,

  133. I like to have it immediately.

  134. So that is an annoying thing for me.

  135. But we're all waiting for something.

  136. In fact, we have gotten so used to waiting.

  137. We grow up, we're waiting to graduate.

  138. Once we graduate, we're waiting to get the job that we want.

  139. Once we've got the job we want,

  140. we're waiting so we can share the money that we now have

  141. with someone in our lives.

  142. So we're waiting for someone to date.

  143. And once we're waiting for someone to date,

  144. and then we're waiting for them to propose.

  145. And finally, after so many, so many months of waiting,

  146. Nathan finally proposes.

  147. And so we're waiting for that.

  148. And then we're waiting for the wedding.

  149. And then after that, we are waiting for a baby.

  150. And this is where suddenly it starts to get a bit painful, right?

  151. Because you start watching other people go through,

  152. and you're like, oh, I'm still waiting.

  153. And suddenly the waiting isn't as fun anymore.

  154. And then you're waiting,

  155. and you're showing up at other people's weddings.

  156. And then it gets a little bit harder each time you show up.

  157. Because you're still waiting.

  158. But let's say some people who do end up getting married,

  159. and then the next thing comes,

  160. and you're waiting now to start your family.

  161. You're waiting for a baby.

  162. And then this is where it gets really, really painful.

  163. Because you start seeing the people around you

  164. start to get married and have kids.

  165. And then you're like, okay, I'm still waiting.

  166. Of course, just when you have your kids,

  167. just when you think that that's over,

  168. and you've stopped waiting, that is not the case, right?

  169. Parents will know you're still waiting.

  170. Still waiting.

  171. I'm still waiting for Micah to understand

  172. that he needs to go to the toilet.

  173. I'm waiting for Ruben to put his socks back in the right place.

  174. I'm waiting for them to study,

  175. and waiting for them to study well,

  176. and so that they can graduate.

  177. And then I'm waiting.

  178. And then the waiting game continues,

  179. and continues, and continues.

  180. The question is,

  181. waiting is a part of life.

  182. And it often is painful.

  183. But do we wait well?

  184. Do you wait well?

  185. You're waiting for that project at work to finish,

  186. so you can finally relax.

  187. You're waiting for that exam to finish,

  188. so you can finally relax.

  189. But what's funny is,

  190. after that,

  191. suddenly there's the next exam.

  192. Suddenly there's the next project.

  193. And we are constantly waiting.

  194. We see in Scripture today,

  195. we are going to be looking at someone

  196. who has been waiting for a long, long time.

  197. We're going to be looking at Abraham.

  198. And these last few weeks,

  199. first Gabe,

  200. and then Joe has been taking us through the journey

  201. from Genesis 15 to Genesis 17,

  202. where Abraham is still waiting.

  203. Let me just rewind your mind

  204. and go back to Genesis 12.

  205. Abraham is 75 years old.

  206. He's called to go.

  207. So Genesis 12,

  208. he's called to go,

  209. and he's been told that he will have a kid.

  210. Not only will he have a kid,

  211. he'll be a father to many.

  212. That's Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  213. You go all the way to Genesis chapter 17,

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  214. where Joe left yesterday.

  215. It's been 24 years.

  216. 24 years when the promise came.

  217. How many of us are waiting for God to deliver something,

  218. but we're not expecting to wait 24 years?

  219. So in the middle,

  220. something happens.

  221. In Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  222. Abraham hears from God again.

  223. This time he's 85 years old.

  224. So it's been 10 years since that first promise.

  225. And God says,

  226. you will be a father of many.

  227. The chapter after that,

  228. and the year after that,

  229. his wife says,

  230. you know what?

  231. That's enough.

  232. 11 years of waiting is too much.

  233. Maybe God promises in another way.

  234. Maybe God needs us to be creative.

  235. Let's take the matter and draw our hands

  236. and let's create a baby in a different way.

  237. So what happens?

  238. The servant,

  239. Hagar comes in.

  240. Okay,

  241. and then suddenly,

  242. suddenly they try and do it in their own way

  243. and it doesn't work.

  244. At this point,

  245. they're 86.

  246. It happens.

  247. Of course,

  248. it doesn't really satisfy them.

  249. In fact,

  250. the moment it happens,

  251. Sarah,

  252. it was her idea.

  253. After that,

  254. she turns on Abraham straight away

  255. and says,

  256. it's your fault that this happened.

  257. Now I'm filled with resentment.

  258. Now I'm filled with bitterness.

  259. Abraham just kind of just ignores it,

  260. puts it to the side.

  261. Genesis chapter 17,

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  262. God shows up again in his vision

  263. and says,

  264. hey,

  265. Abraham,

  266. you will be a father to many.

  267. I'm going to change your name.

  268. Your name meant exalted father,

  269. which would have been quite comical

  270. for a long time anyway,

  271. but now it's going to be father of many.

  272. How ironic would that have been?

  273. And then of course,

  274. Abraham,

  275. hearing this promise again

  276. in year 24,

  277. how would he have felt?

  278. Again,

  279. God,

  280. you're promising this,

  281. but I'm not seeing anything.

  282. Each time,

  283. every time an England manager says,

  284. this is the year,

  285. I've got the right team.

  286. It's the right mindset.

  287. We're going to bring it home.

  288. Sooner or later,

  289. you lose hope.

  290. But Abraham does something

  291. very interesting.

  292. He listens to God again

  293. and he's getting this interaction with God

  294. and he's like,

  295. okay,

  296. there's a covenant.

  297. And so the next thing that he does,

  298. he circumcises his whole house.

  299. And so last week,

  300. Joe talked a little bit about this,

  301. the identity change

  302. leading to the mission,

  303. but also the pain that comes,

  304. the sacrifice that comes,

  305. the circumcision of the heart

  306. that comes as well.

  307. So at the end of chapter 17,

  308. what you see here

  309. is Abraham circumcises

  310. his whole house

  311. waiting for the promise

  312. to still come.

  313. And it tells me something

  314. about the whole ordeal

  315. of waiting

  316. that I wanted to share with you,

  317. which is that

  318. John Oldberg says this,

  319. biblically,

  320. waiting is not just something

  321. we have to do

  322. until we get what we want.

  323. Waiting is part of the process

  324. of becoming

  325. what God wants us to be.

  326. Let me say that again.

  327. Biblically,

  328. waiting is not just something

  329. we have to do

  330. until we get what we want.

  331. Waiting is part of the process

  332. of becoming

  333. what God wants us to be.

  334. So there's something

  335. about waiting

  336. that God is using

  337. to mold you,

  338. to sanctify you.

  339. If you look from

  340. God's vantage point,

  341. he can do anything.

  342. He can gift you

  343. whatever you're waiting for

  344. immediately,

  345. yet somehow he's withholding.

  346. Somehow he's holding it back.

  347. The question,

  348. therefore,

  349. is why?

  350. And let me tell you,

  351. I think I know the answer

  352. to that question.

  353. Why is God making you wait?

  354. And I can answer it

  355. in three simple words.

  356. I don't know.

  357. For some of you

  358. who have been waiting

  359. for a long time,

  360. I don't know why

  361. he's asking you to wait.

  362. But I do know

  363. that he is

  364. making you wait.

  365. And I do know

  366. that he's making

  367. something out of you

  368. as you wait.

  369. The question,

  370. therefore,

  371. then becomes,

  372. do we wait well?

  373. Now,

  374. before we jump

  375. into chapter 18,

  376. I want to share

  377. something a little bit.

  378. It's been 24 years

  379. Abraham's been waiting

  380. for this baby

  381. that God promised him.

  382. 24 years.

  383. It's been

  384. quite a few years

  385. also since they made

  386. the mistake

  387. where they took matters

  388. into their own hands.

  389. At this point,

  390. that son,

  391. Ishmael,

  392. is 13 years old.

  393. He's 13 now.

  394. And yet,

  395. the satisfaction

  396. isn't there

  397. because they took matters

  398. into their own hands.

  399. So Ishmael's around

  400. but they're like,

  401. oh,

  402. it's just something just,

  403. can you imagine

  404. just living with that guilt

  405. for all that time?

  406. Look,

  407. I promised you,

  408. you promised me

  409. and I believed you.

  410. It didn't happen

  411. so basically I've taken matters

  412. in my own hands

  413. and now I've got evidence

  414. of that and it's here

  415. and my wife and I

  416. are still distanced.

  417. She's still resentful

  418. and we're not going anywhere.

  419. And so God,

  420. you finally speak again.

  421. Okay,

  422. I'm going to act.

  423. I'm going to circumcise

  424. my whole house.

  425. And then he's just sat there

  426. and now he's 99 years old

  427. and still waiting.

  428. And it's at this moment

  429. where he's probably

  430. the most weak.

  431. He's just had

  432. a fairly significant surgery

  433. done to him

  434. and to his whole household.

  435. Just bear in mind here,

  436. Abraham,

  437. okay,

  438. so this next story

  439. that we're going to read

  440. in chapter 18,

  441. we always imagine

  442. it's just Abraham

  443. and his wife in a tent.

  444. It's not.

  445. A few chapters ago,

  446. he had 318 young men

  447. who actually went

  448. into battle with him.

  449. So if you think about that,

  450. a lot of scholars believe

  451. there's at least

  452. 1,000 people

  453. in Abraham's

  454. whole kind of entourage.

  455. So at least 318

  456. but probably close

  457. to 400 or 500 men

  458. were all circumcised

  459. and all in pain

  460. and all waiting.

  461. Guys,

  462. we're just going to sit

  463. in that moment

  464. just for a second.

  465. It's in that pain

  466. that we then get

  467. chapter 18.

  468. This is where I invite you

  469. to stand for the word

  470. of the Lord.

  471. Matthew is going to come

  472. and read to us

  473. Genesis chapter 18

    Genesis 18:1–15

  474. verse 1 to 15

  475. and maybe before that

  476. I'll just quickly pray.

  477. God,

  478. we lean on your word

  479. and only your word

  480. and actually we can only

  481. understand your word

  482. through your Holy Spirit.

  483. So Holy Spirit,

  484. as we read this

  485. word that comes from you,

  486. would you help us digest?

  487. Would you help us

  488. understand?

  489. And then would you

  490. help us apply?

  491. The stage is yours.

  492. Lord, we love you

  493. and we want to hear from you.

  494. The word of God

  495. from Genesis chapter 18.

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  496. Genesis chapter 18.

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  497. The Lord appeared to him

  498. by the oaks of memory.

  499. As he sat at the door

  500. of his tent

  501. in the heat of the day,

  502. he lifted up his eyes

  503. and looked.

  504. And behold,

  505. three men were standing

  506. in front of him.

  507. When he saw them,

  508. he ran from the tent door

  509. to meet them

  510. and bowed himself

  511. to the earth

  512. and said,

  513. O Lord,

  514. if I have found favor

  515. in your sight,

  516. do not pass by your servant.

  517. Let a little water

  518. be brought

  519. and wash your feet

  520. and rest yourselves

  521. under the tree

  522. while I bring a morsel

  523. of bread

  524. that you may refresh

  525. yourselves

  526. and after that

  527. you may pass on.

  528. Since you have come

  529. to your servant.

  530. So they said,

  531. do as you have said.

  532. And Abraham went

  533. quickly into the tent

  534. to Sarah

  535. and said,

  536. quick,

  537. three sears

  538. of fine flour

  539. knead it

  540. and make cakes.

  541. And Abraham

  542. ran to the herd

  543. and took a calf,

  544. tender and good

  545. and gave it

  546. to a young man

  547. who prepared it quickly.

  548. Then he took curds

  549. and milk

  550. and the calf

  551. that he had prepared

  552. and set it before them

  553. and he stood by them

  554. under the tree

  555. while they ate.

  556. They said to him,

  557. where is Sarah,

  558. your wife?

  559. And he said,

  560. she's in a tent.

  561. The Lord said,

  562. I will surely return

  563. to you about this time

  564. next year

  565. and Sarah,

  566. your wife,

  567. shall have a son.

  568. And Sarah was listening

  569. at the tent door

  570. behind him.

  571. Now Abraham

  572. and Sarah were old,

  573. advanced in years.

  574. The ways of women

  575. had ceased

  576. to be with Sarah.

  577. So Sarah laughed

  578. to herself saying,

  579. after I am worn out

  580. and my Lord is old,

  581. shall I have pleasure?

  582. The Lord said to Abraham,

  583. why did Sarah laugh

  584. and say,

  585. shall I indeed

  586. bear a child now,

  587. now that I am old?

  588. Is there anything

  589. too hard for the Lord?

  590. At the appointed time,

  591. I will return to you

  592. about this time

  593. next year

  594. and Sarah

  595. shall have a son.

  596. But Sarah denied it

  597. saying,

  598. I did not laugh

  599. for she was afraid.

  600. He said,

  601. no,

  602. but you did laugh.

  603. Thank you both.

  604. This is the word

  605. of the Lord.

  606. Please take a seat.

  607. The most awkward

  608. end to the conversation.

  609. We'll get to the end

  610. there

  611. in a little bit.

  612. I just want to paint

  613. the picture again.

  614. Okay,

  615. so he's waiting.

  616. It's been 24 years now

  617. that he's still waiting.

  618. He just had the surgery

  619. probably a couple

  620. of days ago.

  621. His whole household

  622. is just keeled over,

  623. just in pain.

  624. And he's waiting

  625. and he sat

  626. in the heat

  627. of the day.

  628. Okay,

  629. so verse one,

  630. we're just going

  631. to go through

  632. chapter 18,

  633. verse one.

  634. And the Lord

  635. appeared to him

  636. by the oaks

  637. as he sat

  638. at the door

  639. of his tent

  640. in the heat

  641. of the day.

  642. My goodness,

  643. I was in England

  644. for three weeks,

  645. not a single drop

  646. of rain

  647. and no air con.

  648. And the heat wave

  649. was unreal.

  650. It was unreal.

  651. It was okay

  652. in the day

  653. because I'm used to it

  654. because I've been

  655. in Hong Kong,

  656. but nighttime,

  657. not being able,

  658. just sleeping

  659. with nothing,

  660. no air con

  661. was just terrible.

  662. But in the heat

  663. of the day

  664. is where he was sat.

  665. Now,

  666. this is the afternoon

  667. siesta time.

  668. So he's sat there.

  669. There's not really

  670. much going on.

  671. He just had surgery.

  672. So he's just basically

  673. resting.

  674. And it's in this moment

  675. he has the most

  676. fascinating interaction

  677. with three different people.

  678. And so what we see here

  679. is he lifted up his eyes

  680. and looked.

  681. So he's,

  682. again,

  683. what is he thinking?

  684. Well,

  685. first thing I think

  686. I would be thinking

  687. if I was a hair

  688. I was like,

  689. what have I done?

  690. I've weakened

  691. my whole household

  692. and we're all in pain.

  693. And actually,

  694. it's been 24 years.

  695. What did I just do?

  696. And so he sits

  697. and he's waiting

  698. and then he sees

  699. three men come from afar.

  700. Now,

  701. bearing in mind

  702. in the ancient world,

  703. it's not like Hong Kong.

  704. You don't see people

  705. all the time.

  706. So he sees them

  707. from afar

  708. and what happens

  709. during that time

  710. is that actually

  711. you must engage

  712. with those people

  713. that you don't know.

  714. You must engage

  715. with those strangers

  716. because why?

  717. They could either be allies

  718. or they could be enemies.

  719. So it's very important

  720. for the livelihood

  721. of Abraham's household

  722. that he engages them

  723. very quickly

  724. to find out

  725. whether they are allies

  726. or whether they're enemies.

  727. So he sees them

  728. from afar

  729. and the first thing

  730. that he does

  731. is he actually

  732. runs towards them.

  733. He's probably not

  734. running very fast.

  735. Why?

  736. Because he's 99 years old

  737. and because he just

  738. had a surgery.

  739. So he runs towards them

  740. the best way

  741. that he can

  742. and he goes up to them

  743. and actually

  744. he treats them

  745. with hospitality.

  746. And this is my first point.

  747. When we are waiting,

  748. how do we wait well

  749. is that actually

  750. we still wait

  751. with a spirit

  752. and a sense of openness

  753. of what God might do.

  754. We might be waiting

  755. for that one thing

  756. but actually

  757. sometimes

  758. we're so obsessed

  759. with waiting

  760. for that one thing

  761. we completely ignore

  762. the rest of life

  763. that God has given us.

  764. We are completely

  765. not open

  766. to all the other things

  767. because you're only

  768. going to be happy

  769. once you get that one thing.

  770. Am I right?

  771. That's what we keep thinking.

  772. Once I pass that exam,

  773. once I have that person,

  774. once I do this,

  775. once I get over this illness,

  776. then and only then

  777. will I be happy

  778. and only then

  779. will I serve you

  780. and do all these other things.

  781. But what we see here

  782. is that when we're waiting,

  783. even when we are in pain,

  784. even when we are weak,

  785. we still have to be open.

  786. And there's a hospitality here

  787. that he shows straight away

  788. and he says this,

  789. O Lord,

  790. now bear in mind,

  791. if you've got a Bible,

  792. you can see that the Lord here

  793. is capital L

  794. and then lowercase for O-R-D.

  795. He doesn't know

  796. that this is God just yet.

  797. He thinks

  798. this is just a stranger.

  799. In Hebrews 13,

  800. 2,

  801. it references this event

  802. and he says,

  803. actually,

  804. Abraham's just entertaining strangers,

  805. unaware that actually

  806. they are angels

  807. and we'll talk a little bit more

  808. about that later.

  809. So he goes to them

  810. like they would have

  811. in the ancient world,

  812. greeting this person

  813. that they don't know

  814. with hospitality.

  815. O Lord,

  816. if I have found favor in your sight,

  817. do not pass by your servant.

  818. Let a little water be brought

  819. and wash your feet

  820. and rest yourselves

  821. under the tree

  822. while I bring a morsel of bread

  823. that you may refresh yourselves

  824. and after that,

  825. you may pass on

  826. since you have come

  827. to your servant.

  828. So he says,

  829. hey,

  830. I'm so glad that you're here.

  831. I'm bored out of my brains.

  832. The Wi-Fi isn't working.

  833. I'm in pain.

  834. All I want to do

  835. is just distract myself.

  836. You've come.

  837. Can I just look after you?

  838. Can I offer you some water?

  839. Can I offer you some bread?

  840. And after that,

  841. you can go.

  842. I just want to show you

  843. that I'm friendly,

  844. that I am hospitable to you.

  845. So the three men agree

  846. and say,

  847. do as you have said.

  848. But he lies.

  849. He doesn't just bring water

  850. and bread.

  851. He brings everything.

  852. He kills a calf.

  853. He brings milk.

  854. He brings yogurt.

  855. He brings a cake.

  856. Can you see

  857. that there is an extreme level

  858. of hospitality that comes?

  859. And this is my point.

  860. When we are waiting,

  861. my first point is,

  862. can we be open

  863. to the fact that

  864. whilst we are waiting

  865. for that one thing,

  866. there are still

  867. so many other things

  868. that God wants us to see

  869. and do.

  870. Can we be hospitable?

  871. Can we be friendly

  872. to people

  873. as we are waiting?

  874. Now,

  875. as your pastor,

  876. I would like to tell you

  877. that I have been trying

  878. to put this into action

  879. myself this week.

  880. And one of the ways is,

  881. actually,

  882. there's a stark difference

  883. between the two cultures

  884. of the East and the West

  885. is when you're in the East,

  886. you don't talk to strangers.

  887. Not only do you not

  888. talk to strangers,

  889. you do not actually

  890. even look at them

  891. or smile at them at all

  892. because it goes against

  893. our culture's way.

  894. So we basically

  895. just ignore everyone

  896. and we just stay on our phones

  897. and that's it.

  898. But in the West,

  899. I noticed something

  900. very interesting.

  901. Because everyone's

  902. so used to waiting,

  903. they greet each other,

  904. they smile at each other,

  905. they talk to each other

  906. and they have lots

  907. of conversation

  908. with each other.

  909. It does actually happen,

  910. maybe outside

  911. of the big cities.

  912. There's something

  913. about the city

  914. which is the worst,

  915. by the way,

  916. which then makes me think

  917. we are in Asian culture

  918. in one of the big cities.

  919. We have to be very much

  920. aware of this.

  921. We are not good

  922. at being hospitable

  923. to strangers.

  924. Are you good

  925. with strangers?

  926. When was the last time

  927. you had a conversation

  928. with a stranger?

  929. Oh, Agnes said last week,

  930. tell us about it.

  931. That is so amazing.

  932. That is so amazing.

  933. I'm so glad

  934. that Agnes said that

  935. because actually

  936. that reinforces my point.

  937. I love talking

  938. to taxi drivers

  939. because they know the world.

  940. They see so many people,

  941. they listen to so many things.

  942. I love talking

  943. to taxi drivers

  944. and Uber drivers

  945. and also they rarely

  946. ever get cared for.

  947. So to hear there's

  948. someone in our church

  949. who actually is willing

  950. to talk to people

  951. and you realize

  952. that there are pains

  953. going on in people's lives

  954. and then you realize

  955. actually I have problems

  956. in my life

  957. but when I speak

  958. to other people

  959. I realize they have problems

  960. in their lives

  961. and you realize

  962. these are all opportunities.

  963. Are we willing

  964. to be hospitable

  965. to strangers?

  966. So I took that into action

  967. because I am one

  968. of those people

  969. when I get into the lift

  970. I slam the close button

  971. as fast and as long

  972. as I can

  973. as though if I can

  974. press it faster

  975. it'll close

  976. and there'll be less people

  977. coming into the lift.

  978. That is me.

  979. But yesterday

  980. for the first time

  981. in many years

  982. I was like

  983. I'm just going to wait.

  984. This morning we had someone

  985. who managed to make it

  986. onto the lift

  987. and I was like

  988. I'm so proud of myself

  989. that that happened.

  990. But to be hospitable

  991. to strangers

  992. is something that I think

  993. we deeply, deeply lack.

  994. I want to challenge

  995. all of you

  996. as you leave here today

  997. can you strike up

  998. a conversation

  999. with someone

  1000. who you don't know?

  1001. I kid you not

1002. it will be the most

  1003. shocking thing

  1004. that will have happened

  1005. to them.

  1006. But we always wonder

  1007. God why doesn't

1008. those things happen to you?

  1009. Why don't I meet

  1010. an Uber driver

  1011. who's crying

1012. and that I get to pray for

  1013. and share the gospel

  1014. I don't get a chance

  1015. to do that

1016. I'm just stuck in my

  1017. well guess what

1018. you have to speak to them

1019. you have to ask them questions

1020. you have to share with them

  1021. what you believe

1022. and then you have to offer

  1023. to pray for them.

  1024. Are we open

  1025. to those interactions?

  1026. You see Abraham here

  1027. was

  1028. because why

  1029. when we're waiting

  1030. something that's very important

  1031. is that we

1032. focus not just on the destination

1033. but on the journey itself.

  1034. I think people

1035. who live in slower cultures

  1036. who are more hospitable

  1037. they get that

  1038. because they know

  1039. there's one destination

1040. but there'll be another destination

  1041. after the destination

  1042. it just keeps going

  1043. it's the rat race

1044. it just keeps going and going

  1045. but if you realize

  1046. that actually

  1047. the whole of life

  1048. is a journey

  1049. that actually

  1050. we are all sojourners

  1051. then the driver

  1052. who's driving you

  1053. or the waiter

  1054. who's serving you

  1055. these are all

  1056. actual human beings

1057. made in the image of God

  1058. I wonder

  1059. whether if we had

  1060. a new conviction today

  1061. to go out

  1062. and engage

  1063. in conversation

  1064. with a stranger

  1065. what could happen?

  1066. Would we be hospitable

  1067. to strangers

  1068. even when we

  1069. are still waiting?

  1070. Henry Nouwen

  1071. says this

  1072. waiting time

  1073. is not wasting time

  1074. that should speak

1075. to the Hong Konger's soul

  1076. the deepest part

1077. of the Hong Konger's soul

  1078. needs to remember

  1079. and understand this

  1080. the waiting time

  1081. is not wasting time

  1082. he carries on

  1083. waiting patiently

  1084. in expectation

  1085. is the foundation

  1086. of the spiritual life

  1087. our spiritual life

  1088. is a life

  1089. in which we wait

  1090. actively present

  1091. to the moment

  1092. this indeed

1093. is a very radical stance

  1094. toward life

  1095. in a world

  1096. preoccupied with control

1097. does that speak to you?

  1098. that speaks to me

  1099. my idol is control

1100. and so I want to be

  1101. in control of everything

  1102. I don't want to be

  1103. open to the interactions

  1104. that God might be

  1105. leading towards me

  1106. because I think

  1107. waiting time

  1108. is wasting time

  1109. when actually

  1110. when we're waiting

1111. we have to ask God

1112. well why am I waiting

  1113. right here?

  1114. who am I supposed

  1115. to engage?

  1116. who am I supposed

  1117. to interact with?

  1118. it's so important

1119. for us to get that

  1120. and Betsy Charles Howard

  1121. says this

  1122. if we wait

1123. to reach out to others

1124. from a position of fullness

1125. we will never do it

1126. if on the other hand

  1127. we love others

1128. out of our own emptiness

  1129. we will paradoxically

  1130. find we have

  1131. an abundance of love

  1132. to give

1133. how often do we do that?

1134. I'll talk to the Uber driver

1135. when I have a bit more capacity

  1136. when I'm not worried

  1137. about the thing

  1138. that I'm waiting for

  1139. and then

1140. I might share the gospel

1141. and then I might do this

1142. and I might do that

1143. we wait till we're in a place

  1144. where we think

  1145. we'll be completely full

  1146. and only then

  1147. will we do it

  1148. but we realise that

1149. we will never truly be full

  1150. because we're always

  1151. waiting for something

1152. so what we should do

1153. is we should reach out to people

1154. when we are even not

1155. in our position of fullness

  1156. think about Abraham

  1157. he's waiting

  1158. he's been waiting

  1159. for 24 years

  1160. and yet now

1161. there's someone who shows up

  1162. he's still open

  1163. he doesn't know that's God

  1164. up until that point

1165. God's been showing up in visions

  1166. so he doesn't know

1167. God's actually going to show up

1168. right in front of him

  1169. and yet he's hospitable

  1170. yet he's open

1171. how good are we at waiting?

1172. I know all of you are waiting

  1173. for something

1174. and I want to encourage you

  1175. that God sees

1176. God knows you are waiting

  1177. God knows how painful

  1178. that waiting is

  1179. would you allow him

1180. to do what he wants to do

  1181. in your life

  1182. even through that waiting?

  1183. maybe you're waiting

  1184. for your child

1185. to come back to God

  1186. maybe you're waiting

1187. for that sickness to go

  1188. maybe you're waiting

  1189. for that person

1190. to come and join you in life

  1191. whatever it is

1192. that you are waiting for

  1193. can you wait well?

  1194. can you appreciate

  1195. that God is trying

  1196. to do something?

  1197. he knows

  1198. he spoke to Abraham

  1199. three times

  1200. and yet he's still

  1201. making Abraham wait

  1202. for 24 years

1203. God always has a purpose

  1204. in waiting

  1205. it's our job

  1206. as we're waiting well

  1207. to be open

1208. to all the other opportunities

  1209. that he gives us

  1210. and to allow him

1211. to do whatever he wants

1212. to do in our lives

  1213. whilst we are waiting

  1214. I think that is a message

  1215. that someone here

  1216. needs to hear

  1217. you are waiting

  1218. and you might still

1219. be waiting for a long time

1220. but stay and wait well

1221. and be open to whatever

1222. God has in store for you

  1223. the second point

1224. that we go here is

1225. why did this interaction happen?

  1226. why is this passage

  1227. of scripture here?

1228. we carry on in the story

1229. the fan keeps changing my pages

1230. so what happens here is

  1231. they eat

  1232. they're happy

  1233. verse 7

1234. Abraham ran to the herd

1235. took a calf tender and good

1236. and gave it to a young man

  1237. who prepared it quickly

  1238. then he took curds

  1239. which is yogurt

  1240. and milk

  1241. and the calf

  1242. that he prepared

1243. and set it before them

1244. and he stood by them

  1245. under the tree

  1246. whilst they ate

  1247. true hospitality there

1248. he is open to what

1249. God might have in store for him

1250. and then they speak to him

  1251. remember he thinks

  1252. they're strangers

  1253. at this moment

1254. and then they turn to him

1255. now there's three people there

  1256. scholars

  1257. mostly scholars believe

  1258. that this is

  1259. the pre-incarnate Jesus

  1260. and two angels

  1261. so that's what

  1262. most people think

  1263. but actually

  1264. it's a bit of a mystery

  1265. we don't actually know

  1266. who they are

1267. because when he talks to them

  1268. he realizes

  1269. who they are

  1270. straight away

  1271. because suddenly

  1272. they say

  1273. where is Sarah

  1274. your wife

  1275. wait

  1276. these are strangers

  1277. how do you know

  1278. that my wife

1279. well how do you know

  1280. I have a wife

  1281. okay but I guess

  1282. you could guess that

1283. but how do you know

1284. that my wife is Sarah

  1285. wait

1286. but how do you know

1287. that my wife is Sarah

  1288. and not Sarai

  1289. because it was only

  1290. last chapter

1291. which was a few days ago

1292. where she changed her name

  1293. who are you

1294. and that's when the Lord

  1295. lowercase Lord

  1296. suddenly turns into uppercase

  1297. L-O-R-D

1298. if you look at your Bible

  1299. you'll see the difference

  1300. verse 10

  1301. the Lord said

  1302. and suddenly it's capitals

1303. and so what we see here

  1304. what Abraham will have

  1305. suddenly realized here

  1306. that this is

1307. not just a random group

  1308. of strangers

  1309. that are lost

1310. that this is God himself

  1311. and you realize

  1312. why this interaction

  1313. took place

  1314. because actually

  1315. God's spoken to Abraham

1316. quite a few times already

1317. he doesn't need to show up

1318. why does he show up

  1319. this time

  1320. and we find out

  1321. it's not actually

  1322. for Abraham

  1323. it's actually

  1324. for his wife

  1325. the unveiling here

  1326. is that these

  1327. three strangers

  1328. actually know his wife

  1329. know that she's called

  1330. Sarah

  1331. her new name

  1332. and they're actually

  1333. here for her

  1334. isn't that interesting

1335. and so it carries on

  1336. she is in

  1337. and then he says

1338. she is in the tent

  1339. and the Lord said

  1340. I will surely return

1341. to you about this time

  1342. next year

  1343. and Sarah your wife

  1344. shall have a son

  1345. 24 years of waiting

  1346. finally

  1347. God shows up

  1348. and puts a timeline

  1349. on it

  1350. and says

  1351. this time

  1352. next year

  1353. you will have

  1354. a son

  1355. and Sarah

  1356. interestingly

  1357. was listening

  1358. at the tent door

  1359. behind him

  1360. they would have known

  1361. this because they came

  1362. for her

  1363. because they came

  1364. to speak to her

  1365. this is really interesting

  1366. because up until

  1367. this point

  1368. all Sarah

  1369. had ever heard

  1370. from God

  1371. or about God

  1372. was from who

  1373. Abraham

  1374. Abraham would have

  1375. been the one

  1376. that told her

  1377. hey I had a vision

  1378. I had a dream

  1379. that God's going

  1380. to do this

  1381. and hey

1382. we've got to move out

  1383. because God

1384. told us to move out

  1385. but finally

  1386. there comes a moment

  1387. where actually

  1388. God comes for Sarah

  1389. herself

  1390. which is interesting

  1391. which tells me

  1392. something else

  1393. because up until

  1394. this point

  1395. Sarah is resentful

  1396. she is unbelieving

  1397. why

  1398. because I think

  1399. she only knew God

  1400. through someone else

  1401. finally God

  1402. introduces himself

  1403. to her

  1404. personally

  1405. we all need

  1406. to have that moment

  1407. where God comes

  1408. to introduce himself

  1409. to us

  1410. maybe your parents

  1411. are Christian

  1412. maybe you have

  1413. that grandparent

  1414. who is a Christian

  1415. who dragged you

  1416. to church

  1417. whatever it is

1418. we all come to church

  1419. through someone

  1420. in our lives

  1421. but the whole point

  1422. is that actually

  1423. God doesn't have

  1424. grandchildren

  1425. we cannot ever

  1426. just relate to God

  1427. as a distant grandfather

  1428. he must become

  1429. our father

  1430. we must have our

  1431. we must establish

  1432. our own direct

  1433. connection

  1434. with God

  1435. ourselves

  1436. and we see here

  1437. that God comes

  1438. and finds Sarah

  1439. specifically

  1440. to talk to her

  1441. because up until now

  1442. she'd only ever

  1443. heard from Abraham

  1444. and so

  1445. it carries on

  1446. so Abraham

  1447. hears this

  1448. now Abraham

  1449. and Sarah

  1450. were old

  1451. advanced in years

  1452. what a nice way

  1453. to put it

  1454. for someone

  1455. to be advanced

  1456. in years

  1457. Hank

  1458. I am so sorry

  1459. I've always called you

  1460. old

  1461. but you are

  1462. advanced in years

  1463. what a lovely

  1464. way to put that

  1465. don't any of you

  1466. come up to me

1467. and say the same thing

  1468. advance in years

  1469. and then it gets

  1470. even better

  1471. the way of women

  1472. had ceased

  1473. to be with Sarah

  1474. what a lovely way

  1475. to say

  1476. that menopause

  1477. had passed

  1478. what that

  1479. is saying

  1480. is that basically

  1481. there is no chance

  1482. of her having

  1483. a baby anymore

  1484. it's like

  1485. I'm God

  1486. I know that I promised you

  1487. 24 years ago

1488. that you would have a son

  1489. and now

  1490. biologically

1491. you cannot have a son

1492. in the book of Romans

  1493. I think it's chapter 4

  1494. that says actually

  1495. her womb

  1496. was dead

  1497. it was barren

  1498. it wasn't capable

  1499. of having

  1500. a baby

  1501. so they were

  1502. advanced in years

  1503. and the way

  1504. a woman had ceased

  1505. to be with Sarah

  1506. and so Sarah

  1507. hears this

  1508. in the tent

  1509. even though they

  1510. are speaking

  1511. actually to her

  1512. and then she says

  1513. to herself

  1514. she laughs to herself

1515. after I am worn out

1516. and my lord is old

  1517. shall I have pleasure

  1518. this is a really

  1519. interesting passage

  1520. and it reminds me

  1521. of all the people

  1522. that I've met

  1523. all the couples

  1524. who have gone

  1525. through infertility

  1526. who have gone

  1527. through miscarriages

  1528. and the pain

  1529. of all of that

  1530. and how it actually

  1531. causes such a challenge

  1532. between a husband

  1533. and a wife

  1534. and how it actually

  1535. just wreaks

  1536. so much havoc

  1537. in just your emotional

  1538. and your spiritual life

  1539. and it's a wrestle

  1540. and it's a weight

  1541. that can go on

  1542. for so long

  1543. and can cut so

  1544. so deep

  1545. as I'm putting myself

  1546. in the shoes

  1547. of Abraham and Sarah

  1548. I'm imagining

  1549. 24 years

  1550. of trying

  1551. and they had

  1552. God's promise

  1553. and yet it still

  1554. hadn't happened

  1555. can you imagine

  1556. that first time

  1557. where actually

  1558. she realizes

  1559. that menopause

  1560. is happening

  1561. she realizes

1562. that this is the end

  1563. and she realized

  1564. the way a woman

  1565. has ceased to be

  1566. with her

  1567. and she's like

  1568. that promise

  1569. it's gone

  1570. and

  1571. 10 years ago

  1572. when I tried

  1573. to take matters

  1574. in my own hands

  1575. I guess

  1576. that's it

  1577. I mean

  1578. the chapter before

  1579. sorry

  1580. in chapter 17

  1581. that's what Abraham

  1582. says when God's

  1583. speaking to him

  1584. when he says

1585. I'm going to bless you

  1586. you're going to have a son

  1587. he's like

1588. oh it must be Ishmael

  1589. I guess

1590. because it can't be me anymore

  1591. because actually

  1592. I'm old

  1593. and Sarah's old too

  1594. and we biologically

  1595. cannot have children

  1596. anymore God

  1597. so he's trying

  1598. to make sense

  1599. of God's promise

  1600. through his

  1601. own earthly lens

  1602. he's like

  1603. okay this is how

  1604. it must happen

  1605. but God doesn't

  1606. work like that

  1607. but there's something

  1608. else that's really

  1609. interesting here

1610. after I am worn out

1611. and my Lord is old

  1612. shall I have

  1613. pleasure

  1614. the word pleasure

  1615. there

  1616. in the Hebrew

  1617. actually means

  1618. sexual pleasure

  1619. it means intimacy

  1620. so not only

  1621. had she passed

  1622. childbearing age

  1623. they were actually

  1624. no longer intimate

  1625. anymore

  1626. and you can totally

  1627. imagine why

  1628. they're 99

  1629. and 90 years old

  1630. they've suffered

  1631. this hurt

  1632. of the waiting

  1633. for all these years

  1634. they took matters

  1635. into their own hands

  1636. 10 years ago

  1637. that didn't end up

  1638. being as satisfying

  1639. as they thought

  1640. and so you can

  1641. totally imagine

  1642. the distance

  1643. the chasm

  1644. between Abraham

  1645. and Sarah

  1646. so you can totally

1647. imagine the two of them

  1648. are not even close

  1649. anymore

  1650. and so that

  1651. if you understand

  1652. it from that context

  1653. suddenly Sarah's line

  1654. makes sense

  1655. she scoffs

  1656. her laugh

  1657. is a hopeless one

  1658. now

  1659. after I'm worn out

  1660. remember also

  1661. in that context

  1662. childbearing

  1663. was everything

  1664. for a woman

  1665. if you could not

  1666. bear children

  1667. then you are

  1668. worthless in society

  1669. so this Sarah

  1670. who was formerly

  1671. very beautiful

  1672. popular with all

  1673. the guys

  1674. no doubt

1675. ends up in a place

  1676. where she is now

  1677. just laughing

  1678. hopelessly

  1679. to make matters

  1680. worse

  1681. there was no

  1682. biological

  1683. info there

  1684. that we have

  1685. today

  1686. so Abraham

  1687. would have

  1688. completely blamed

  1689. Sarah

  1690. for this problem

  1691. especially

  1692. since Ishmael

  1693. had been born

  1694. so after Ishmael

  1695. had been born

  1696. the resentment

  1697. would have come

  1698. well see

  1699. it's not my problem

  1700. managed to get her

  1701. pregnant

  1702. it's you Sarah

  1703. can you imagine

  1704. the distance

  1705. can you imagine

  1706. the abandonment

  1707. so that's why

  1708. she says earlier

  1709. God is stopping

  1710. me from having

  1711. this

  1712. can you imagine

  1713. the hurt

  1714. that she has

  1715. now

  1716. after I'm worn

  1717. out

  1718. after I can't

  1719. even physically

  1720. have children

  1721. anymore

  1722. after my husband

  1723. won't even look

  1724. at me

  1725. let alone touch

  1726. me

  1727. how are you

  1728. supposed to

  1729. even have

  1730. a baby

  1731. is what she's

  1732. saying

  1733. can you start

  1734. to see now

  1735. why God

  1736. has shown up

  1737. to speak

  1738. to Sarah

  1739. and not

  1740. Abraham

  1741. that's the

  1742. pain

  1743. that she's

  1744. in

  1745. the Lord

  1746. then said

  1747. to Abraham

  1748. why did

  1749. Sarah

  1750. laugh

  1751. Abraham

  1752. doesn't know

  1753. this

  1754. because Abraham

  1755. isn't God

  1756. so she's

  1757. behind in the

  1758. tent

  1759. and then God

  1760. says shall I

  1761. indeed bear a

  1762. child now that

  1763. I'm old

  1764. is what Abraham

  1765. said sorry

  1766. is anything

  1767. too hard

  1768. for the Lord

  1769. if you see

  1770. in your Bible

  1771. there just

  1772. underneath

  1773. there's a

  1774. little

  1775. hysterics

  1776. there

  1777. is anything

  1778. too hard

  1779. or anything

  1780. too wonderful

  1781. for the Lord

  1782. it's interesting

  1783. he says

  1784. hey Abraham

  1785. why is your

  1786. wife laughing

  1787. why is she

  1788. saying that

  1789. this is

  1790. impossible

  1791. nothing is

  1792. too hard

  1793. for me

  1794. nothing is

  1795. too wonderful

  1796. for me

  1797. this is a

  1798. gift that I

  1799. would give

  1800. her

  1801. at this

  1802. appointed

  1803. time I

  1804. would turn

  1805. to you

  1806. about this

  1807. time next

  1808. year

  1809. and Sarah

  1810. shall have

  1811. a son

  1812. this is

  1813. where I

  1814. know

  1815. that God

  1816. actually

  1817. is interested

  1818. in Sarah's

  1819. well-being

  1820. because actually

  1821. she could also

  1822. just give

  1823. Sarah a

  1824. baby right

  1825. then and

  1826. there

  1827. he could have

  1828. actually showed

  1829. up and says

  1830. hey you've

  1831. been waiting

  1832. for 24

  1833. years

  1834. guess what

  1835. guess what

  1836. is in

  1837. Sarah's

  1838. womb

  1839. a baby

  1840. it's done

  1841. but he

  1842. doesn't

  1843. he says

  1844. I'm going to

  1845. come back

  1846. next year

  1847. what's he

  1848. doing there

  1849. he's not

  1850. only gifting

  1851. Sarah

  1852. a baby

  1853. he's gifting

  1854. her a new

  1855. marriage

  1856. because why

  1857. you're going to

  1858. have to get

  1859. close to Abraham

  1860. again for this

  1861. to happen

  1862. I'm going to

  1863. come back

  1864. next year

  1865. and you're

  1866. going to

  1867. have some

  1868. time where

  1869. you rekindle

  1870. your romance

  1871. with your

  1872. husband

  1873. you get to

  1874. be together

  1875. again

  1876. and only

  1877. when you

  1878. are together

  1879. only when

  1880. you have

  1881. loosened

  1882. the bitterness

  1883. and the

  1884. resentment

  1885. I'm gifting

  1886. you a new

  1887. marriage

  1888. and in

  1889. gifting you

  1890. a new

  1891. marriage

  1892. I will

  1893. gift you

  1894. a son

  1895. isn't that

  1896. amazing

  1897. see God

  1898. doesn't just

  1899. give us

  1900. gifts just

  1901. for the sake

  1902. of it

  1903. just because

  1904. we want

  1905. them

  1906. he knows

  1907. what we

  1908. want

  1909. but more

  1910. importantly

  1911. he knows

  1912. what we

  1913. need

  1914. and so

  1915. he comes

  1916. and that's

  1917. where we

  1918. have the

  1919. interaction

  1920. but Sarah

  1921. denied it

  1922. saying I

  1923. did not

  1924. laugh

  1925. for she

  1926. was afraid

  1927. he said

  1928. no

  1929. but you

  1930. did laugh

  1931. the most

  1932. awkward

  1933. conversation

  1934. and then it

  1935. just stops

  1936. and then it

  1937. just ends

  1938. which tells

  1939. me one thing

  1940. that God

  1941. just has a

  1942. sense of

  1943. humour

  1944. why

  1945. he wants

  1946. to tell

  1947. her

  1948. that I

  1949. know you

  1950. laughed

  1951. but I

  1952. know that

  1953. your laughter

  1954. was one

  1955. of pain

  1956. I know

  1957. that your

  1958. laughter

  1959. was one

  1960. of hopelessness

  1961. but I

  1962. want to

  1963. tell you

  1964. that I

  1965. know that

  1966. I know

  1967. that it

  1968. doesn't

  1969. seem

  1970. possible

  1971. but I

  1972. want you

  1973. to know

  1974. that nothing

  1975. is impossible

  1976. with me

  1977. and so you

  1978. end up

  1979. there

  1980. and it

  1981. kind of

  1982. just

  1983. stops

  1984. it's

  1985. really

  1986. interesting

  1987. here

  1988. because

  1989. up until

  1990. this point

  1991. you don't

  1992. really sense

  1993. that Sarah

  1994. is one who

  1995. is filled

  1996. with faith

  1997. and yet

  1998. actually later

  1999. in scripture

  2000. in Hebrews

  2001. 11

  2002. she's made

  2003. it into

  2004. the hall

  2005. of fame

  2006. where it

  2007. actually says

  2008. that she

  2009. was considered

  2010. faithful

  2011. that she

  2012. actually

  2013. continued to

  2014. believe in

  2015. the one

  2016. who made

  2017. her the

  2018. promise

  2019. so something

  2020. somewhere

  2021. changes

  2022. so actually

  2023. it would have

  2024. been interesting

  2025. because these

  2026. three men

  2027. said they'll

  2028. come back

  2029. next year

  2030. and by this

  2031. time next year

  2032. they'll have

  2033. a son

  2034. okay so if

  2035. you're good

  2036. with maths

  2037. then you know

  2038. that babies

  2039. are usually

  2040. in the

  2041. mother's

  2042. womb

  2043. for

  2044. actually

  2045. 40 weeks

  2046. okay from

  2047. there they

  2048. had maybe a

  2049. couple months

  2050. to keep

  2051. trying

  2052. it meant hey

  2053. you have a few

  2054. months now

  2055. to in faith

  2056. to trust me

  2057. to re-engage

  2058. your husband

  2059. and to re-kindle

  2060. your marriage

  2061. and to spend

  2062. this time

  2063. together

  2064. because you

  2065. are gonna

  2066. get a

  2067. son

  2068. I want

  2069. you to

  2070. engage in

  2071. your marriage

  2072. in faith

  2073. is what he

  2074. said

  2075. and so she

  2076. believes him

  2077. and then she

  2078. does

  2079. and of course

  2080. later what we

  2081. see here

  2082. it is attributed

  2083. to her

  2084. that she

  2085. is a woman

  2086. of faithfulness

  2087. isn't that

  2088. beautiful

  2089. that God

  2090. comes to

  2091. interact with

  2092. the one

  2093. who feels

  2094. abandoned

  2095. the one

  2096. who feels

  2097. hurt

  2098. the one

  2099. who feels

  2100. pain

  2101. the one

  2102. who feels

  2103. as though

  2104. she's lost

  2105. her identity

  2106. and she

  2107. comes and

  2108. he speaks

  2109. to her

  2110. and so that's

  2111. the story

  2112. that we have

  2113. here

  2114. and I want

  2115. to just draw

  2116. a couple

  2117. of conclusions

  2118. from here

  2119. because why

  2120. is this

  2121. strange

  2122. story here

  2123. because actually

  2124. very shortly

  2125. after he

  2126. moves on to

  2127. talking about

  2128. something else

  2129. that Gabe

  2130. will move

  2131. on into next

  2132. week

  2133. but a couple

  2134. of quick

  2135. conclusions

  2136. here from

  2137. this passage

  2138. the first

  2139. thing is this

  2140. the weight

  2141. is real

  2142. some of us

  2143. are continually

  2144. still thinking

  2145. that waiting

  2146. time is

  2147. waiting time

  2148. I want you

  2149. to know

  2150. yes the

  2151. weight is

  2152. real

  2153. you are

  2154. waiting for

  2155. something

  2156. let's just

  2157. acknowledge

  2158. that

  2159. and let's

  2160. acknowledge

  2161. that that

  2162. is frustrating

  2163. let's

  2164. acknowledge

  2165. that that

  2166. is painful

  2167. let's

  2168. acknowledge

  2169. that that

  2170. is lonely

  2171. the weight

  2172. is real

  2173. and the

  2174. pain

  2175. is real

  2176. as well

  2177. I get

  2178. that

  2179. God

  2180. gets that

  2181. I think

  2182. that's why

  2183. this passage

  2184. is here

  2185. he's showing

  2186. you

  2187. he's showing

  2188. us that the

  2189. there is

  2190. also something

  2191. about waiting

  2192. that we

  2193. should do

  2194. well

  2195. that we

  2196. whilst we

  2197. are waiting

  2198. for that

  2199. one thing

  2200. we should

  2201. still be

  2202. open to

  2203. the other

  2204. things

  2205. whilst we're

  2206. waiting for

  2207. that one

  2208. thing that

  2209. we think

  2210. will satisfy

  2211. us we

  2212. should still

  2213. be open

  2214. to all

  2215. the other

  2216. possibilities

  2217. that are

  2218. out there

  2219. that we

  2220. also need

  2221. to be

  2222. very much

  2223. aware of

  2224. the weight

  2225. is real

  2226. the weight

  2227. is painful

  2228. but let us

  2229. wait well

  2230. let us wait

  2231. with a hospitality

  2232. let's go out

  2233. and whilst we're

  2234. waiting for

  2235. whatever we're

  2236. waiting for

  2237. still be the

  2238. human beings

  2239. still be the

  2240. Christ followers

  2241. that God

  2242. has called

  2243. us to be

  2244. to engage

  2245. with strangers

  2246. to love

  2247. them

  2248. to smile

  2249. at them

  2250. to open

  2251. the door

  2252. for them

  2253. to show

  2254. the love

  2255. of Christ

  2256. to them

  2257. the weight

  2258. is real

  2259. the weight

  2260. is painful

  2261. but let us

  2262. wait well

  2263. sometimes we

  2264. don't recognize

  2265. God when he

  2266. shows up

  2267. just like Abraham

  2268. he's in pain

  2269. sat outside

  2270. his tent

  2271. waiting

  2272. and then suddenly

  2273. God shows up

  2274. Hebrews 13

  2275. let us

  2276. be hospitable

  2277. to strangers

  2278. not knowing

  2279. that maybe

  2280. sometimes we've

  2281. entertained angels

  2282. let us be

  2283. isn't that exciting

  2284. for you

  2285. that you could

  2286. walk downstairs

  2287. and you can

  2288. talk to someone

  2289. random

  2290. who you think

  2291. is random

  2292. but you may

  2293. have set off

  2294. a series of

  2295. events

  2296. that will lead

  2297. that person

  2298. to Christ

  2299. doesn't that

  2300. excite you

  2301. it should

  2302. that there are

  2303. people that we

  2304. can speak to

  2305. and engage with

  2306. in a different

  2307. way that no

  2308. one else does

  2309. that actually

  2310. we can share

  2311. love to

  2312. sometimes

  2313. we don't

  2314. recognize God

  2315. and he still

  2316. shows up

  2317. sometimes even

  2318. when we've

  2319. given up

  2320. let us

  2321. continue

  2322. to wait

  2323. because God

  2324. also has

  2325. a sense

  2326. of humor

  2327. he knows

  2328. your pain

  2329. but he will

  2330. also sit

  2331. with you

  2332. in that

  2333. pain

  2334. but he also

  2335. has a sense

  2336. of humor

  2337. but you

  2338. did laugh

  2339. it's not

  2340. happened yet

  2341. but he knows

  2342. what he's

  2343. going to do

  2344. he does have

  2345. a sense

  2346. of humor

  2347. which is

  2348. interesting

  2349. because

  2350. eventually

  2351. Isaac

  2352. does get

  2353. born

  2354. and what

  2355. does the

  2356. name

  2357. Isaac

  2358. mean

  2359. it means

  2360. laughter

  2361. what's even

  2362. more interesting

  2363. and I have

  2364. to read

  2365. this to you

  2366. in Genesis

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  2367. chapter 21

  2368. she finally

  2369. has Isaac

  2370. chapter 21

  2371. verse 6

  2372. and Sarah

  2373. said God

  2374. has made

  2375. laughter

  2376. for me

  2377. and everyone

  2378. who hears

  2379. will laugh

  2380. over me

  2381. and she

  2382. said who

  2383. would have

  2384. said to

  2385. Abraham

  2386. that Sarah

  2387. would nurse

  2388. children

  2389. yet I have

  2390. born him

  2391. a son

  2392. in his

  2393. old age

  2394. I'm a

  2395. 91 year

  2396. old woman

  2397. who is

  2398. nursing

  2399. a baby

  2400. people

  2401. are going

  2402. to laugh

  2403. people are

  2404. going to

  2405. find it

  2406. ridiculous

  2407. that I'm

  2408. doing that

  2409. and you

  2410. know what

  2411. when you

  2412. meet Christ

  2413. when you

  2414. realize that

  2415. he is

  2416. good for

  2417. what he

  2418. promised

  2419. you

  2420. when you

  2421. realize

  2422. who he

  2423. is

  2424. you don't

  2425. care what

  2426. other people

  2427. think

  2428. anymore

  2429. she spent

  2430. her whole

  2431. can you

  2432. imagine

  2433. again just

  2434. another bit

  2435. of context

  2436. Abraham

  2437. Sarah

  2438. they were

  2439. the heads

  2440. of this

  2441. household

  2442. of a

  2443. thousand

  2444. people

  2445. what would

  2446. they have

  2447. seen

  2448. on a

  2449. yearly

  2450. basis

  2451. their

  2452. servants

  2453. their

  2454. families

  2455. all

  2456. getting

  2457. married

  2458. and having

  2459. kids

  2460. constantly

  2461. being

  2462. surrounded

  2463. by kids

  2464. and they

  2465. would have

  2466. been laughing

  2467. especially

  2468. when they

  2469. changed

  2470. their name

  2471. oh did

  2472. you hear

  2473. about our

  2474. boss

  2475. did you

  2476. hear about

  2477. Abraham

  2478. he's

  2479. changed

  2480. his name

  2481. the father

  2482. of one

  2483. has changed

  2484. his name

  2485. to be a

  2486. father

  2487. of many

  2488. isn't that

  2489. funny

  2490. and his

  2491. wife's

  2492. old

  2493. advanced

  2494. in years

  2495. they would

  2496. have been

  2497. laughing

  2498. at her

  2499. but now

  2500. when it

  2501. has actually

  2502. happened

  2503. she actually

  2504. rejoices

  2505. God has

  2506. made laughter

  2507. for me

  2508. and everyone

  2509. who hears

  2510. will laugh

  2511. over me

  2512. I don't

  2513. care that

  2514. they're laughing

  2515. about me

  2516. now

  2517. because

  2518. God

  2519. is the

  2520. one

  2521. who is

  2522. in my

  2523. corner

  2524. God

  2525. is on

  2526. my

  2527. side

  2528. and God

  2529. has fulfilled

  2530. his promise

  2531. isn't that an amazing

  2532. turnaround

  2533. for Sarah

  2534. the wait is real

  2535. the wait is painful

  2536. let us wait

  2537. well

  2538. can we recognize

  2539. that God shows up

  2540. even in places

  2541. that we don't

  2542. recognize him

  2543. he has a sense

  2544. of humor

  2545. and he brings

  2546. laughter

  2547. to the hopeless

  2548. and he turns

  2549. the laughter

  2550. of hopelessness

  2551. into the laughter

  2552. of hopefulness

  2553. that is our God

  2554. can we wait

  2555. well

  2556. this whole

  2557. scenario

  2558. seems very

  2559. impossible

  2560. and you wonder

  2561. why it's here

  2562. but really

  2563. what it's also

  2564. doing is saying

  2565. actually this isn't

2566. the end of the story

  2567. why is this story

  2568. here

  2569. because something

  2570. even more

  2571. impossible

  2572. happens

  2573. years and years

  2574. later

  2575. where an angel

  2576. shows up

  2577. to someone

  2578. who isn't

  2579. married

  2580. in the book

  2581. of Luke

  2582. Luke

  2583. almost knowing

  2584. that the readers

  2585. would have drawn

  2586. this parallel

  2587. writes about

  2588. an angel

  2589. showing up

  2590. to a teenage

  2591. girl called

  2592. Mary

  2593. and he says

  2594. hey you're

  2595. going to have

  2596. a son

  2597. and she's like

  2598. well I'm not

  2599. even married

  2600. at least Sarah

  2601. was married

  2602. so that is

  2603. impossible

  2604. and yet

  2605. what does Luke

  2606. say

  2607. the angel

  2608. says

  2609. but nothing

  2610. is impossible

  2611. with God

  2612. nothing

  2613. is impossible

  2614. with God

  2615. and what you

  2616. see then

  2617. is his

  2618. parallel

  2619. brings

  2620. his

  2621. completion

  2622. through Christ

  2623. who also

  2624. comes

  2625. he is the

  2626. real

  2627. Isaac

  2628. he is the

  2629. one who

  2630. brings laughter

  2631. to those

  2632. who are in

  2633. sorrow

  2634. he is the

  2635. real son

  2636. of promise

  2637. and you

  2638. realize that

  2639. story with

  2640. Abraham and

  2641. Sarah

  2642. was simply

  2643. just a

  2644. foreshadowing

  2645. simply just

  2646. a signpost

  2647. to the most

  2648. impossible

  2649. story

  2650. you know

  2651. what's even

  2652. more impossible

  2653. me and you

  2654. living forever

  2655. me and you

  2656. living forever

  2657. that's even

  2658. more impossible

  2659. than these

  2660. women having

  2661. babies

  2662. and yet

  2663. that's the

  2664. miracle

  2665. that we

  2666. have

  2667. why

  2668. because of

  2669. Jesus

  2670. and only

  2671. because of

  2672. Jesus

  2673. because he

  2674. was the

  2675. true

  2676. Isaac

  2677. he was

  2678. the true

  2679. son of

  2680. promise

  2681. he was

  2682. the one

  2683. that was

  2684. given

  2685. and he

  2686. was the

  2687. one

  2688. that has

  2689. given

  2690. us

  2691. victory

  2692. and he

  2693. is the

  2694. reason

  2695. why we

  2696. are all

  2697. truly

  2698. coming

  2699. home

  2700. so you

  2701. don't have

  2702. to keep

  2703. waiting

  2704. for England

  2705. to win

  2706. the World

  2707. Cup

  2708. to feel

  2709. like you're

  2710. at home

  2711. you don't

  2712. have to

  2713. keep waiting

  2714. for whatever

  2715. that you're

  2716. waiting for

  2717. it's already

  2718. come

  2719. Jesus has

  2720. already

  2721. come

  2722. the son

  2723. that was

  2724. promised

  2725. who would

  2726. save mankind

  2727. has already

  2728. come

  2729. isn't that

  2730. beautiful

  2731. doesn't that

  2732. make you

  2733. laugh

  2734. doesn't that

  2735. fill you

  2736. with joy

  2737. that's even

  2738. better

  2739. than England

  2740. winning

  2741. the World

  2742. Cup

  2743. how do

  2744. we have

  2745. a passion

  2746. for Bible

  2747. translations

  2748. is that we

  2749. have a passion

  2750. for the

  2751. Bible

  2752. how do we

  2753. have a passion

  2754. for the

  2755. Bible

  2756. is that we

  2757. realize what

  2758. it says

  2759. inside

  2760. which is

  2761. that we

  2762. who were

  2763. dead

  2764. who had

  2765. no hope

  2766. who are

  2767. still waiting

  2768. in the

  2769. dark

  2770. the light

  2771. has now

  2772. shone

  2773. into our

  2774. world

  2775. the victory

  2776. has come

  2777. we now

  2778. all belong

  2779. and have an

  2780. identity

  2781. and have a

  2782. home

  2783. in him

  2784. because of

  2785. the son

  2786. of promise

  2787. that came

  2788. into this

  2789. world

  2790. may that

  2791. fill us

  2792. with joy

  2793. today

  2794. may we

  2795. laugh

  2796. may we

  2797. engage

  2798. strangers

  2799. with a

  2800. smile

  2801. may we

  2802. wait

  2803. well

  2804. knowing

  2805. that our

  2806. Christ

  2807. has already

  2808. come

  2809. let's

  2810. pray

  2811. well

  2812. before we

  2813. respond to

  2814. you in

  2815. worship

  2816. just to

  2817. sit in

  2818. this

  2819. moment

  2820. for a

  2821. little

  2822. bit

  2823. and

  2824. acknowledge

  2825. that we

  2826. are waiting

  2827. and the

  2828. wait

  2829. is real

  2830. and the

  2831. wait

  2832. is painful

  2833. but Lord

  2834. we want

  2835. to wait

  2836. well

  2837. we want

  2838. to wait

  2839. with hope

  2840. we want

  2841. to wait

  2842. with love

  2843. and faith

  2844. let each

  2845. of us

  2846. bring

  2847. to God

  2848. whatever

  2849. we are

  2850. waiting

  2851. for

  2852. let us

  2853. all say

  2854. to him

  2855. Lord

  2856. I am

  2857. waiting

  2858. for this

  2859. but I

  2860. want you

  2861. more

  2862. waiting

  2863. for the

  2864. day

  2865. where we

  2866. truly

  2867. get to

  2868. come

  2869. home

  2870. but until

  2871. that day

  2872. we wait

  2873. well

  2874. so even

  2875. though the

  2876. wait is

  2877. real

  2878. the pain

  2879. is real

  2880. we gather

  2881. this morning

  2882. we almost

  2883. force ourselves

  2884. to remember

  2885. that God

  2886. you are

  2887. good

  2888. you are

  2889. faithful

  2890. your promises

  2891. are as

  2892. real as

  2893. the wait

  2894. and that

  2895. you will

  2896. come through

  2897. but in

  2898. the right

  2899. time

  2900. we identify

  2901. with Sarah

  2902. today

  2903. but may

  2904. we also

  2905. be recognized

  2906. as people

  2907. who are

  2908. faithful

  2909. even with

  2910. our doubts

  2911. even with

  2912. our mistakes

  2913. even with

  2914. our pain

  2915. we declare

  2916. in one voice

  2917. in one song

  2918. that God

  2919. you are

  2920. good
