  1. And good morning, church.

  2. We're going through the book of Genesis.

  3. ! We've been going through Genesis, Abraham's story.

  4. ! For the last two months, we've been tracing through Abraham's story.

  5. !

  6. And this week, we've been waiting for something.

  7. We've been waiting for something the last two months.

  8. And this week, we're finally here.

  9. We finally made it.

  10. We're finally here.

  11. In Genesis chapter 12, two months ago,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  12. we started hearing about Abraham's call

  13. God called Abraham in Genesis 12

  14. to go leave his father's house,

  15. leave the land that he came from.

  16. And God gave him a promise.

  17. I will bless you.

  18. I will make you a great nation.

  19. I will give you land.

  20. And we see later in Genesis 15

  21. that he will have offspring.

  22. He will have a son from his own flesh

  23. that God will make into a great nation.

  24. The problem, though, was that Abraham

  25. Abraham was 75 at the time that God called him.

  26. His wife, Sarah, was 65.

  27. They were old.

  28. They didn't have child.

  29. They were barren.

  30. Who has a kid at 75?

  31. Who can have a kid for the first time at the age of 75?

  32. But that's the promise that God gave them.

  33. They're forced to wait.

  34. But they grow impatient.

  35. In Genesis 16, 10 years afterwards,

  36. they're tired of waiting.

  37. And we heard how Abraham and Sarah,

  38. they take matters into their own hands.

  39. They do it themselves.

  40. Sarah gives Hagar to Abraham.

  41. And they have a son, Ishmael.

  42. They have a son.

  43. So did their plan work?

  44. Did Abraham's plan to take God's promise for himself work?

  45. It looks like it.

  46. They had the son they wanted, Ishmael.

  47. But we read 13 years later in Genesis 17,

  48. God says, no, it's not through Ishmael

  49. that this promise will come.

  50. Ishmael is not the son that was promised.

  51. The promise will come through Sarah's son.

  52. And you will name him Isaac.

  53. And we've spent two months going through the story.

  54. We've been waiting two months,

  55. exploring this theme of waiting in faith for two months.

  56. It was two months for us,

  57. but it was 25 years for Abraham and Sarah.

  58. 25 years of waiting.

  59. 25 years of disappointment.

  60. And when you wait for something so long,

  61. there's expectations that come with it.

  62. There's anticipation, excitement builds, hype builds.

  63. So actually myself,

  64. I'll be flying off to Toronto tonight for a few weeks.

  65. Toronto is where I'm from.

  66. I'm going back to visit home.

  67. Which reminds me of actually when Jollibee's opened in Toronto

  68. for the first time in 2018.

  69. You guys know what Jollibee's is?

  70. Fried chicken chain from the Philippines.

  71. And when it opened,

  72. the hype around it was crazy.

  73. It was insane.

  74. I heard the first,

  75. I didn't go because I'm not Filipino,

  76. but the first guy in line at Jollibee's,

  77. he waited,

  78. he set up a tent in the freezing cold,

  79. literally sub-zero temperatures,

  80. waited there for 17 hours.

  81. 17 hours for some fried chicken.

  82. Not just him.

  83. Thousands of others waited in line.

  84. Not just on the first day,

  85. grand opening day,

  86. but for weeks,

  87. literally weeks,

  88. you'd have to wait a few hours in line

  89. to get some fried chicken.

  90. Why is that?

  91. Why?

  92. It's because in the Philippines,

  93. Jollibee's,

  94. it's not just chicken.

  95. It's not just fried chicken.

  96. JP knows.

  97. It's pride.

  98. It's identity.

  99. It's a national treasure, right?

  100. Are you really Filipino

  101. if you don't defend chicken joy with your life?

  102. And so,

  103. the guy in line who was interviewed,

  104. one person in line was interviewed,

  105. and he said,

  106. they asked him,

  107. why are you waiting?

  108. Why are you waiting so long here?

  109. And he said,

  110. it's because he's been away

  111. for the Philippines for years.

  112. He was from the Philippines.

  113. He moved to Canada.

  114. He's been away for years.

  115. And finally,

  116. he's able to have a taste of home.

  117. At last,

  118. years later,

  119. he can finally have a taste of home.

  120. And that makes that 10-hour wait worth it

  121. for a taste of home.

  122. And that's the kind of anticipation

  123. we've been building.

  124. There's this wait,

  125. years of waiting,

  126. leading up to Genesis 21.

  127. And finally,

  128. the wait is over.

  129. It's time for Isaac to be born.

  130. It's time.

  131. The promise is here.

  132. But will it live up to the hype?

  133. Will it live up to the expectation,

  134. anticipation that's been building?

  135. Let's see.

  136. And I'll,

  137. we'll,

  138. let's stand together

  139. as we read from Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  140. I'll invite Annabelle and Teresa

  141. to come up to read for us, please.

  142. We'll be reading the whole of chapter 21,

  143. when Isaac is born.

  144. Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  145. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said,

  146. and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  147. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son

  148. in his old age at the time of which

  149. God had spoken to him.

  150. Abraham called the name of his son

  151. who was born to him,

  152. whom Sarah bore him,

  153. Isaac.

  154. And Abraham circumcised his son,

  155. Isaac,

  156. when he was eight days old,

  157. as God had commanded him.

  158. Abraham was a hundred years old

  159. when his son Isaac was born to him.

  160. And Sarah said,

  161. God has made laughter for me.

  162. Everyone who hears will laugh over me.

  163. And she said,

  164. who would have said to Abraham

  165. that Sarah would nurse children?

  166. Yet I have born him a son in his old age.

  167. And the child grew and was weaned.

  168. And Abraham made a great feast

  169. on the day that Isaac was weaned.

  170. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar,

  171. the Egyptian,

  172. whom she had born to Abraham laughing.

  173. So she said to Abraham,

  174. cast out this slave woman with her son,

  175. for the son of this slave woman

  176. shall not be heir with my son Isaac.

  177. And the thing was very displeasing

  178. to Abraham on account of his son.

  179. But God said to Abraham,

  180. be not displeased because of the boy

  181. and because of your slave woman.

  182. Whatever Sarah says to you,

  183. do as she tells you.

  184. For through Isaac shall,

  185. for through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  186. And I will make a nation of the son

  187. of the slave woman also,

  188. because he is your offspring.

  189. So Abraham rose early in the morning

  190. and took bread and a skin of water

  191. and gave it to Hagar,

  192. putting it on her shoulder,

  193. along with the child,

  194. and sent her away.

  195. And she departed and wandered

  196. in the wilderness of Beersheba.

  197. When the water and the skin was gone,

  198. she put the child under one of the bushes.

  199. Then she went and sat down

  200. opposite him a good way off,

  201. about the distance of a bow shot.

  202. For she said,

  203. let me not look on the death of the child.

  204. And as she sat opposite him,

  205. she lifted up her voice and wept.

  206. And God heard the voice of the boy.

  207. And the angel of God called to Hagar

  208. from heaven and said to her,

  209. what troubles you, Hagar?

  210. Fear not,

  211. for God has heard the voice of the boy

  212. where he is.

  213. Up, lift up the boy

  214. and hold him fast with your hand,

  215. for I will make him into a great nation.

  216. Then God opened her eyes

  217. and she saw a well of water.

  218. And she went and filled the skin with water

  219. and gave the boy a drink.

  220. And God was with the boy

  221. and he grew up.

  222. He lived in the wilderness

  223. and became an expert with the bow.

  224. He lived in the wilderness of Paran

  225. and his mother took a wife for him

  226. from the land of Egypt.

  227. A treaty with Abimelech.

  228. At that time,

  229. Abimelech and Phicol,

  230. the commander of his army,

  231. said to Abraham,

  232. God is with you

  233. in all that you do.

  234. Now therefore,

  235. swear to me here by God

  236. that you will not deal falsely with me

  237. or with my descendants

  238. or with my posterity.

  239. But as I have dealt kindly with you,

  240. so you will deal with me

  241. and with the land

  242. where you have sojourned.

  243. And Abraham said,

  244. I will swear.

  245. When Abraham reproved Abimelech

  246. about a well of water

  247. that Abimelech's servants had seized,

  248. Abimelech said,

  249. I do not know who has done this thing.

  250. You did not tell me

  251. and I have not heard of it until today.

  252. So Abraham took sheep and oxen

  253. and gave them to Abimelech

  254. and the two men made a covenant.

  255. Abraham set seven ewe lambs

  256. of the flock apart.

  257. And Abimelech said to Abraham,

  258. what is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs

  259. that you have set apart?

  260. He said,

  261. these seven ewe lambs

  262. you will take from my hand

  263. that this may be a witness for me

  264. that I dug this well.

  265. Therefore,

  266. that place was called Beersheba

  267. because there both of them

  268. swore an oath.

  269. So they made a covenant at Beersheba.

  270. Then Abimelech and Phicol,

  271. the commander of his army,

  272. rose up and returned

  273. to the land of the Philistines.

  274. Abraham planted a tamarisk tree

  275. in Beersheba

  276. and called there on the name of the Lord,

  277. the everlasting God.

  278. And Abraham sojourned many days

  279. in the land of the Philistines.

  280. This is the word of the Lord.

  281. Please take a seat.

  282. So again, Abraham and Sarah,

  283. we've been waiting 25 years.

  284. They've been waiting 25 years for Isaac.

  285. And it's been a wild ride.

  286. We've been going through

  287. the last 10 chapters or so.

  288. It's been quite a wild ride.

  289. They laughed.

  290. They cried.

  291. They lied.

  292. They fought a war to save Lot.

  293. And it's all building up.

  294. It's all building up to Isaac's birth.

  295. And if this were a movie,

  296. you would expect like drama,

  297. detail, music, fireworks, anything,

  298. because this is what it's been building up to.

  299. But when it comes to the actual event,

  300. when Isaac is born,

  301. the description we have,

  302. all we get is this.

  303. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said,

  304. and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  305. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age

  306. at the time of which God had spoken to him.

  307. There's no drama.

  308. There's no description.

  309. It's like,

  310. this thing just happened.

  311. We've been building up to it,

  312. and then it just happened.

  313. He's born.

  314. Let's move on.

  315. It's not quite what you'd expect from the climax

  316. if this were a movie.

  317. It's like what we're getting is this EDM song that builds,

  318. but then there's no drop.

  319. Or it's like when LeBron James,

  320. he hyped up this TV special,

  321. The Decision,

  322. and then he just slipped in.

  323. I'm going to take my talents to South Beach.

  324. There's all this anticipation,

  325. and it's a letdown.

  326. Or our very own dear,

  327. not LeBron James,

  328. he's, you know,

  329. he's always talking about matcha lattes,

  330. these strawberry matcha lattes.

  331. So one day,

  332. I went to try it.

  333. I went to try it.

  334. And this is probably the last sermon he'll let me preach,

  335. but I'm sorry.

  336. It was,

  337. it wasn't that great.

  338. It was fine.

  339. I have nothing against strawberry.

  340. I have nothing against matcha,

  341. but it's not,

  342. it wasn't worth the hype.

  343. And that's what I feel like

  344. when I read the description in Genesis 21.

  345. Because after 25 years of waiting,

  346. why is there so little detail?

  347. We just get that Isaac is born.

  348. Why does it feel so uneventful?

  349. And I think reading this,

  350. meditating on this,

  351. it's,

  352. I think it's because

  353. God doesn't want to distract us

  354. from what's important in these verses,

  355. in this event.

  356. He doesn't want us getting caught up in the details

  357. because there's only one detail that matters here.

  358. And that is,

  359. the Lord fulfilled his promise.

  360. God did what he said.

  361. Notice the repetition here in these verses.

  362. As he had said,

  363. as he had promised,

  364. at the appointed time,

  365. that's when Isaac was born.

  366. 25 years of waiting,

  367. anticipation built up.

  368. It wasn't to Isaac's beautiful baby shower.

  369. The flowers,

  370. the decorations,

  371. the cupcakes.

  372. He looks so cute.

  373. No, there's one point only here.

  374. The Lord did exactly what he said he would do,

  375. exactly when he said he would do it.

  376. And that's all we need to know.

  377. God fulfills his promise.

  378. Isaac was born as God had said,

  379. as he had promised,

  380. at the time that he said.

  381. That's what God does.

  382. He says it,

  383. and he does it.

  384. We can take God at his word.

  385. God fulfills his promise.

  386. And so that's what we'll be exploring today.

  387. We can trust God

  388. because God is trustworthy.

  389. We can have faith in God

  390. because God is faithful.

  391. And we see this in the three stories

  392. that we have today.

  393. We read three sections

  394. in Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  395. Isaac is born.

  396. That's what we've been waiting for.

  397. Also, we get this,

  398. the scene of Ishmael,

  399. Abraham's other son,

  400. being cast out,

  401. kicked out of Abraham's family.

  402. What do we make of that?

  403. And also, Abraham,

  404. he makes a treaty with King Abimelech

  405. at the end of the chapter.

  406. And in all these stories,

  407. in all this,

  408. we see that God is good.

  409. He is faithful.

  410. He can be trusted.

  411. And so we can put our faith in him.

  412. We see that as Isaac is born.

  413. It happens just as God has said.

  414. It happened just as God had promised.

  415. Even though it seemed impossible.

  416. At this point,

  417. Abraham was 100 years old.

  418. Sarah was 90 years old.

  419. And for someone to be born,

  420. for a child to be born,

  421. for the first time,

  422. from parents that old,

  423. it's simply not possible.

  424. It's biologically not possible.

  425. It's a miracle.

  426. It's a work of God.

  427. And that's why Sarah says

  428. in verse 7 here,

  429. she says this,

  430. Who would have said to Abraham

  431. that Sarah would nurse children?

  432. Who would have thought?

  433. Who would have imagined this possible?

  434. Yet,

  435. I have born him a son

  436. in his old age.

  437. A 90-year-old woman given birth.

  438. That's the most ridiculous thing

  439. I've ever heard.

  440. Who would believe it?

  441. And that's why Sarah laughed.

  442. Remember in chapter 18,

  443. in Genesis 18,

  444. when God told Abraham and Sarah,

  445. I will return to you

  446. about this time next year.

  447. And Sarah will have a son.

  448. And when she heard it,

  449. she laughed.

  450. I'm old.

  451. I'm past menopause.

  452. It's not possible.

  453. She laughed.

  454. I can't have a kid.

  455. And then we read that scene.

  456. And then God asked her,

  457. why did you laugh?

  458. And she said,

  459. no, I didn't laugh.

  460. God said,

  461. yes, you did laugh.

  462. Sarah laughed a laugh

  463. of skepticism,

  464. bitterness,

  465. unbelief.

  466. Sarah,

  467. you'll have a son?

  468. Me?

  469. No way.

  470. That's what Sarah thought.

  471. And so here,

  472. it's funny that God

  473. told Abraham

  474. to name his son Isaac.

  475. Because there's a play on words here.

  476. You'll see a footnote

  477. in your Bible

  478. that the name Isaac

  479. means he laughs

  480. in Hebrew.

  481. Yitzchak.

  482. He laughs.

  483. The name Isaac

  484. is from the word laugh.

  485. To laugh is to Isaac.

  486. There's this word play here.

  487. So as we read this,

  488. we can replace the word laugh

  489. with Isaac

  490. to see what's going on here.

  491. Like Abraham called his son Isaac.

  492. Abraham circumcised Isaac.

  493. He was 100 years old

  494. when Isaac was born.

  495. And Sarah said,

  496. God has made Isaac for me.

  497. He has made laughter for me.

  498. Everyone who hears

  499. will Isaac over me.

  500. There's this repetition of laughter

  501. throughout this passage.

  502. Isaac's name

  503. is a reminder of laughter.

  504. But now,

  505. it's a different sort of laughter.

  506. It's a redeemed laughter.

  507. Sarah,

  508. in chapter 18,

  509. that was a laughter

  510. of bitterness,

  511. incredulity.

  512. Will this actually happen?

  513. I can't believe it.

  514. But God turned

  515. that skeptical Isaac

  516. into this Isaac of joy,

  517. this laughter of joy.

  518. God made Isaac for Sarah,

  519. and now everyone

  520. will Isaac enjoy it with Sarah.

  521. He took Sarah's laughter

  522. of discouragement and despair

  523. and turned it into Isaac

  524. who lives as proof

  525. that God keeps his promise.

  526. He is good for his word.

  527. He does the impossible.

  528. A hundred-year-old,

  529. a nine-year-old woman

  530. bearing a child.

  531. He does the impossible

  532. for our joy

  533. and for his glory.

  534. And that's what God does.

  535. He takes what's irredeemably broken

  536. and redeems it.

  537. He takes our sorrows

  538. and turns it into joy.

  539. True joy.

  540. Eternal joy.

  541. Solid joy.

  542. And I love the verse

  543. in 2 Corinthians 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:17

  544. verse 17.

  545. It says,

  546. this light,

  547. momentary affliction

  548. is preparing for us

  549. an eternal weight of glory

  550. beyond all comparison.

  551. It's not that,

  552. and notice what that verse says.

  553. It's not just that

  554. the reward we have

  555. is greater than

  556. our suffering now.

  557. But that verse says

  558. that our suffering

  559. is preparing for us.

  560. It's working for us,

  561. creating for us

  562. incomparable glory.

  563. What we're going through now

  564. is preparing glory for us,

  565. preparing joy for us.

  566. Because if Sarah,

  567. if laughter,

  568. if Isaac was born to Sarah

  569. at the age of 30,

  570. she wouldn't laugh

  571. the same way she does now

  572. at the age of 90.

  573. She wouldn't have

  574. that same joy.

  575. She wouldn't see

  576. God's hand

  577. the same way

  578. as she does now.

  579. But in the decades

  580. of waiting,

  581. she learned

  582. that God keeps

  583. his promises

  584. and he does

  585. the impossible.

  586. That waiting

  587. prepared her

  588. to receive

  589. her laughter,

  590. to receive Isaac

  591. and give glory

  592. to God for it.

  593. And it's true for Sarah

  594. just as it's true

  595. for us.

  596. And we said before,

  597. waiting time

  598. isn't wasting time.

  599. Even if we don't laugh

  600. in this life,

  601. in our waiting,

  602. in our heartbreak,

  603. we have this promise

  604. of God

  605. that he is preparing

  606. for us

  607. an eternal weight

  608. of glory

  609. beyond all comparison.

  610. That's his promise

  611. and we can take God

  612. at his word.

  613. God's faithful

  614. makes us respond

  615. both with joy

  616. and laughter

  617. and also

  618. with obedience.

  619. And that's how

  620. Abraham responds.

  621. Seeing God's promises

  622. fulfilled,

  623. he obeys

  624. God in faith.

  625. Look at verse 3.

  626. In verse 3,

  627. Abraham called

  628. the name of his son

  629. who was born to him,

  630. who Sarah born

  631. to him,

  632. Isaac.

  633. Abraham obeys

  634. what God told him

  635. to do

  636. in chapter 17.

  637. When God gave

  638. Abraham the promise,

  639. he told him,

  640. you will have a son

  641. and told Abraham,

  642. you will call

  643. his name Isaac.

  644. And Abraham

  645. here obeys.

  646. Because why

  647. wouldn't he obey God?

  648. Why shouldn't

  649. he obey God?

  650. If God is a God

  651. who turns sorrow

  652. into joy,

  653. then why

  654. wouldn't Abraham

  655. want to obey

  656. and have a reminder

  657. in naming his son Isaac,

  658. that is a reminder

  659. that God gives him

  660. that he gave

  661. Abraham laughter.

  662. Why wouldn't Abraham

  663. want to obey

  664. and have this reminder

  665. of God's faithfulness?

  666. And that's the same reason

  667. why we obey God.

  668. Why we obey God

  669. in faith

  670. and pursue things,

  671. for example,

  672. like spiritual disciplines,

  673. to read the word,

  674. to pray,

  675. to gather together

  676. in worship

  677. as we do today.

  678. It's in faith

  679. that God

  680. brings us joy.

  681. God is worthy.

  682. He's worthy

  683. of our trust.

  684. He's worthy

  685. of our worship.

  686. Abraham wasn't like,

  687. oh man,

  688. I have to name him Isaac.

  689. Man,

  690. he's forcing me

  691. to name my son something.

  692. No,

  693. Abraham's attitude is,

  694. God has given me laughter

  695. and I will hold

  696. onto that joy

  697. and obey.

  698. Abraham also obeys

  699. in verse 4.

  700. It says,

  701. Abraham circumcised

  702. his son Isaac

  703. when he was

  704. eight days old

  705. as God

  706. has commanded him.

  707. Do you notice that?

  708. As God has commanded him.

  709. That sounds like

  710. something we read before.

  711. Abraham did

  712. as God has commanded him.

  713. It's flipped around

  714. of what God did.

  715. You see,

  716. God,

  717. the Lord,

  718. did as he had said.

  719. And if God

  720. does as he has said,

  721. then we also

  722. can do

  723. as he had said.

  724. If God acts

  725. as he has promised,

  726. then we can also

  727. obey

  728. as he has commanded.

  729. That's what Abraham did.

  730. God can be trusted.

  731. He keeps his word

  732. and so we can keep

  733. his word.

  734. That is our good.

  735. We can trust God

  736. and obey.

  737. And so,

  738. that's Isaac's birth.

  739. That's the long-anticipated,

  740. awaited birth.

  741. It's been built up

  742. to show us

  743. that God fulfills

  744. his promise.

  745. He's good for his word.

  746. And so we can rejoice

  747. and obey him.

  748. God took Sarah's

  749. bitter laughter

  750. and turned it into

  751. joyful laughter

  752. of Isaac.

  753. He fulfilled his promise.

  754. But,

  755. when God brings joy

  756. to our life,

  757. sometimes

  758. our past mistakes,

  759. they can come back

  760. and challenge it.

  761. And we'll soon see here

  762. a different sort of laughter

  763. from the results

  764. of what Abraham and Sarah

  765. did in chapter 16.

  766. Let's read in verse 8.

  767. Isaac grew

  768. and was weaned.

  769. And Abraham made a great feast

  770. on the day that Isaac

  771. was weaned.

  772. So weaning,

  773. we like to throw

  774. 100-day parties

  775. when you have a baby.

  776. In Hong Kong,

  777. we like to throw

  778. 100-day parties.

  779. Well, Abraham threw a party

  780. when Isaac was weaned.

  781. That's when babies

  782. start eating solid food

  783. instead of drinking milk.

  784. That's what it means

  785. to be weaned.

  786. And they did that

  787. a bit later

  788. when babies were

  789. a bit older back then,

  790. about when Isaac

  791. was two or three years old.

  792. So Isaac's about

  793. two or three years old

  794. at this point.

  795. And that's when we see

  796. another sort of laughter

  797. in verse 9.

  798. It says,

  799. Sarah saw the son

  800. of Hagar the Egyptian

  801. whom she had borne

  802. to Abraham laughing.

  803. The son of Hagar

  804. was laughing.

  805. So that's Ishmael,

  806. the son of Hagar.

  807. He laughs.

  808. And what is this laughter?

  809. He is,

  810. it's not an innocent laughter.

  811. It's not a happy laughter,

  812. a joyful laughter.

  813. He's making fun of Isaac.

  814. He is laughing at Isaac.

  815. He's laughing in mockery

  816. as the footnote

  817. in your Bible says.

  818. He's laughing in mockery.

  819. We know Ishmael's up to no good.

  820. It's not a good laugh

  821. because in the New Testament

  822. in Galatians 4,

    Galatians 4:29

  823. verse 29,

  824. it clarifies that Ishmael,

  825. born according to the flesh,

  826. was persecuting,

  827. attacking Isaac,

  828. who was born

  829. according to the spirit.

  830. So there's this competition

  831. that happens.

  832. We saw this earlier

  833. in chapter 16.

  834. There's this conflict,

  835. competition between Sarah

  836. and Hagar.

  837. And we see this again

  838. between the son of Hagar now

  839. and the son of Sarah,

  840. between Ishmael and Isaac.

  841. And so Sarah is furious.

  842. She's upset.

  843. And she sees what Ishmael

  844. is doing to Isaac,

  845. that laughter.

  846. And so she says to Abraham

  847. in verse 10 here,

  848. she says,

  849. cast out the slave woman

  850. with her son,

  851. for the son of the slave woman

  852. shall not be heir

  853. with my son Isaac.

  854. Now, this isn't the first time

  855. that Sarah got mad at Hagar.

  856. It happened in chapter 16.

  857. And remember,

  858. this is after Sarah

  859. had this bright idea.

  860. It was Sarah's idea

  861. in the first place.

  862. Hey, Abraham,

  863. you go sleep with my servant Hagar

  864. to have a son.

  865. We're going to do it ourselves.

  866. We're going to do it our way

  867. to take hold of God's promises

  868. for ourselves.

  869. They did it their way.

  870. And that led to conflict back then.

  871. And it's coming back

  872. to bite them again now.

  873. And so Sarah says to Abraham,

  874. get rid of Hagar and Ishmael.

  875. But in verse 11,

  876. this was very displeasing to Abraham.

  877. It was very displeasing to Abraham.

  878. I mean, of course it was

  879. because Ishmael was Abraham's son.

  880. He wasn't Sarah's son,

  881. but he's Abraham's son.

  882. And Sarah is asking Abraham,

  883. get rid of your son.

  884. Kick your own son,

  885. your firstborn son,

  886. out of your house.

  887. So obviously,

  888. Abraham is displeased.

  889. He doesn't like that idea.

  890. But surprisingly,

  891. God tells Abraham

  892. to listen to Sarah

  893. in verse 12.

  894. He says to him,

  895. be not displeased

  896. because of the boy

  897. and because of your slave woman.

  898. Whatever Sarah says to you,

  899. do as she tells you.

  900. Do as she tells you.

  901. Now think of what God

  902. is asking Abraham to do.

  903. He's asking Abraham,

  904. send your firstborn son,

  905. not just kick him out of the house.

  906. Like here,

  907. if you're kicked out of the house,

  908. I'll maybe rent a hotel.

  909. I'll go to a friend's place.

  910. But they were in the wilderness.

  911. They were in the desert.

  912. To kick Ishmael out of the house

  913. is to send him into the wilderness,

  914. into the desert,

  915. where he's going to have

  916. to fend for himself,

  917. where he'll be in danger,

  918. where who knows

  919. what's going to happen to him.

  920. It's a dangerous thing.

  921. But we see that God

  922. has three good reasons

  923. to ask this of Abraham.

  924. It seems harsh.

  925. It seems maybe even cruel,

  926. even when we hear about this.

  927. Think of what Ishmael and Hagar

  928. will go through.

  929. But we see,

  930. even in this event,

  931. God is faithful to them all.

  932. And God has few good reasons

  933. to ask Abraham to do this.

  934. Which, in a way,

  935. all relate to actually

  936. what we'll be reading next week

  937. in the next chapter.

  938. Because we talked about

  939. how Isaac's birth

  940. was hyped up and anticipated.

  941. We've been waiting 25 years for it.

  942. But when we read through

  943. a bit further,

  944. we see that Isaac's birth

  945. isn't actually

  946. the climax,

  947. the peak

  948. of Abraham's story.

  949. That comes

  950. in the next chapter,

  951. in chapter 22.

  952. What we call

  953. the binding of Isaac

  954. when Abraham

  955. is asked by God

  956. to sacrifice

  957. his son Isaac

  958. as a burnt offering

  959. on the altar.

  960. I mean,

  961. there's a lot to that.

  962. We'll unpack that more

  963. next week.

  964. God actually

  965. eventually stops Abraham

  966. from going through with it.

  967. But what we see,

  968. what we can keep in mind today

  969. is that

  970. God has in store

  971. for Abraham

  972. an even greater

  973. test of faith

  974. than he's going through

  975. today in this story.

  976. And in preparation

  977. for that,

  978. first,

  979. God removes

  980. any backup plans

  981. in Abraham's mind.

  982. He gets rid of

  983. any plan B's,

  984. any safety nets,

  985. any backup plans

  986. in Abraham's mind.

  987. God tells Abraham,

  988. the promise

  989. will come through Isaac,

  990. not Ishmael.

  991. That's what he says

  992. in verse 13.

  993. Whatever Sarah

  994. tells you to do,

  995. do as she tells you

  996. for through Isaac,

  997. it is through Isaac

  998. that your offspring

  999. will be named.

  1000. It's through Isaac

1001. that's the son of promise.

  1002. And because remember,

  1003. after Ishmael was born,

  1004. it was only another

  1005. 13 years

  1006. before God

  1007. appeared to Abraham

  1008. in chapter 17

  1009. and told him

  1010. that Sarah

  1011. would have

1012. a son of her own,

  1013. Sarah would bear Isaac.

  1014. So possibly

  1015. for 13 years,

  1016. Abraham operated

  1017. under this assumption

  1018. that the promise

  1019. was for Isaac.

1020. He could have thought that.

  1021. He could have thought

  1022. that his own efforts

  1023. to do it himself,

  1024. it actually worked.

  1025. He actually got

  1026. what he wanted.

  1027. He had the son.

  1028. Ishmael was born

  1029. and they made it

  1030. happen themselves.

  1031. But God tells,

  1032. he makes clear

  1033. to Abraham now,

  1034. it's not Ishmael

  1035. but Isaac.

  1036. My blessings

  1037. to you will come

1038. not by your own efforts,

  1039. not by any works

  1040. of the flesh,

  1041. but by my promise

  1042. and my power alone.

  1043. And so,

  1044. in chapter 22,

  1045. when God tests him,

  1046. Abraham can't rely

  1047. on the son born

  1048. from his human efforts.

  1049. All he can do

  1050. is trust God

  1051. at his word,

  1052. trust God's promise.

  1053. With Ishmael

  1054. out of the picture,

  1055. there's no plan B.

  1056. It's do or die

  1057. for Isaac.

  1058. Abraham can't rely

  1059. on his works

  1060. and only can rely

  1061. on faith in God.

  1062. God takes that

  1063. plan B

  1064. out of the picture.

  1065. Second,

  1066. God gives Abraham

  1067. here practice

  1068. in obeying him.

  1069. It's not easy

  1070. always for us

  1071. when God commands us.

  1072. God calls us

  1073. to trust and obey.

  1074. Abraham's something

  1075. difficult to do.

1076. He had to send off

  1077. his firstborn son.

1078. He didn't want to do it.

  1079. It was difficult

  1080. for Abraham.

1081. It was even more difficult

  1082. for Hagar and Ishmael.

  1083. Abraham knew that.

1084. That's why it was hard

  1085. for him.

  1086. But yet,

  1087. Abraham obeys.

  1088. In verse 14,

  1089. rising up early

  1090. the next morning.

  1091. In verse 14,

  1092. he rose up early

  1093. the next morning

  1094. as soon as God

  1095. told him

  1096. to do what God

  1097. told him to do.

  1098. Next week,

  1099. when we read

  1100. chapter 22,

  1101. you'll see that phrase

  1102. again,

  1103. that Abraham,

  1104. when God called him,

  1105. commanded him

  1106. to go with Isaac,

  1107. he rose up early

  1108. the next morning.

  1109. when God called him

  1110. to act.

  1111. This is practice.

  1112. This is preparation

1113. for what he'll do next.

  1114. And so Abraham obeys

  1115. and sends Hagar

  1116. and Ishmael

  1117. off into the wilderness

1118. with just a little bit

  1119. of bread

1120. and a bottle of water,

  1121. a skin of water.

  1122. And they go around

  1123. and wander

  1124. in the wilderness.

  1125. And soon enough,

1126. we hear that the water

  1127. they took with them,

  1128. it runs out.

  1129. They only had

  1130. a skin of water,

1131. a little bit of water.

  1132. And soon enough,

  1133. it runs out.

  1134. And here,

  1135. we might not think

  1136. that much about water

  1137. because we can always,

1138. we can turn on the tap,

1139. you can go to the store,

1140. buy a bottle of water,

1141. but they're in the desert.

  1142. There's no faucets

  1143. in the wilderness.

  1144. There's no 7-Eleven.

  1145. And without water,

  1146. in the heat,

  1147. you die.

  1148. And now here,

  1149. they've all run out.

1150. So what are they going to do?

  1151. What can they do?

  1152. Slowly,

  1153. they lose their strength.

  1154. They're getting thirstier.

  1155. They're thirstier.

  1156. They're getting weaker.

1157. And there is really no hope.

  1158. There's no option.

  1159. They can't do anything.

  1160. They're going to die.

  1161. They have no water.

1162. And they're going to die.

  1163. And so Hagar,

  1164. they're in despair.

  1165. Hagar,

  1166. in verse 15,

1167. she thinks it's the end for him.

  1168. She puts Ishmael down

  1169. by the bushes.

  1170. Reason is,

  1171. she can't bear

  1172. to watch him die.

  1173. As a mother,

  1174. she can't bear

  1175. to watch her son

  1176. take his last breath.

1177. And so she goes off.

  1178. She says,

  1179. let me not look

1180. on the death of my child.

1181. She sets in the bushes

  1182. and she walks off.

  1183. But not too far,

1184. only the distance of a bow shot.

  1185. Because on one hand,

1186. she loves him too much

  1187. to watch him die.

1188. But on the other hand,

1189. she loves him too much

1190. to just leave him there

  1191. alone and die.

  1192. So she goes off

  1193. into a short distance.

  1194. They're in despair.

  1195. She cries out

  1196. and wept.

  1197. And they wept.

  1198. And once again,

  1199. we see that God

1200. is good for his word.

  1201. We see that God

  1202. is faithful.

1203. He is good to us.

  1204. Verse 17 says,

  1205. God heard the voice

  1206. of the boy.

1207. In their moment of despair

1208. when they had nothing to do,

  1209. Isaac and Hagar,

1210. they cried out to God.

  1211. And it says,

  1212. God heard the voice

  1213. of the boy.

  1214. And there's also

  1215. some wordplay here too

  1216. because if you remember

  1217. Ishmael's name,

  1218. Ishmael's name

  1219. means God hears.

  1220. It means God hears.

  1221. And we don't see

  1222. Ishmael's name

  1223. mentioned here,

  1224. but we see

  1225. that God heard

1226. the voice of the boy.

  1227. Ishmael happened

  1228. to Ishmael.

  1229. That's what,

  1230. that's what happened.

  1231. God heard Ishmael.

  1232. And so in,

  1233. in verse 17,

  1234. God opened her eyes.

  1235. God opened Hagar's eyes

  1236. and she saw

  1237. a well of water.

  1238. That was a miracle.

  1239. They,

  1240. they're in the desert.

  1241. There's no water

1242. and suddenly they looked up

1243. and there is a well

  1244. there the whole time.

  1245. And she,

  1246. she filled the skin.

  1247. She filled the bottle

  1248. of water,

1249. gave the boy to drink.

1250. God was with the boy,

  1251. it says,

  1252. and he grew up.

1253. So when we look at this,

1254. do we see God's grace here?

  1255. See God's grace

  1256. to them here.

  1257. And there's,

  1258. there's something here

  1259. because Ishmael

  1260. wasn't the child

  1261. of promise.

  1262. Ishmael was the one

  1263. that God asked even

1264. to cast out of the house,

  1265. send Ishmael away.

  1266. He was the kid

  1267. that,

  1268. who,

  1269. who mocked,

  1270. despised Isaac,

  1271. the chosen son.

  1272. But still,

  1273. even still for Ishmael,

1274. God shows grace to him

  1275. and saves him.

  1276. And not only that,

1277. but he fulfills that promise

  1278. as he promised

  1279. in verse 13,

  1280. I will make a nation

1281. of the son of the slave woman

  1282. also because he is

  1283. your offspring.

  1284. Even to the one

  1285. who was cast off

  1286. out of Abraham's house,

  1287. God was good to.

  1288. And,

  1289. and this is what

1290. we're meant to see here.

  1291. That if God

  1292. was gracious to Ishmael,

  1293. who was outside

  1294. of the covenant,

  1295. who was kicked out

  1296. of Abraham's house,

1297. if he was good to Ishmael,

  1298. then how much more

  1299. will he be gracious?

1300. Will he be good to Isaac?

  1301. Who is the child

  1302. of promise?

  1303. If God provided

  1304. for Ishmael,

  1305. then how much more

  1306. will God bless Isaac

  1307. through whom

  1308. the promises

  1309. to Abraham will come,

  1310. through whom all

  1311. the families

  1312. of the earth

  1313. will be blessed?

  1314. And so later,

  1315. when Abraham,

  1316. he can look back

  1317. on this example

  1318. of God's faithfulness,

  1319. that if God

  1320. would protect Ishmael,

  1321. if God was good

  1322. to Ishmael,

  1323. excluded from the covenant,

  1324. how much more

  1325. will he protect Isaac

  1326. when God calls him

  1327. to give him up?

  1328. God didn't abandon Ishmael.

  1329. And yeah,

  1330. he opened Hagar's eyes

1331. to see this well of water.

  1332. And this leads us

  1333. to the final scene

  1334. here.

  1335. Hagar needed water,

  1336. but also Abraham

  1337. needs water

  1338. to survive

  1339. in the wilderness,

  1340. in the desert.

1341. And here in this final scene,

  1342. he'll have to negotiate

  1343. with King Abimelech

1344. and fight over a well

1345. that he had dug up.

  1346. Look at verse 22.

  1347. It says,

  1348. At that time,

  1349. Abimelech and Fickle,

1350. the commander of his army,

  1351. said to Abraham,

  1352. God is with you

1353. in all that you do.

  1354. So Abimelech and Fickle,

  1355. they come to Abraham

  1356. and they notice this.

1357. God is with you, Abraham,

1358. in all that you do.

  1359. Now,

  1360. think back

  1361. to last week

  1362. in chapter 20.

  1363. Remember that name,

  1364. Abimelech.

  1365. Who is Abimelech?

  1366. Abimelech was the king

  1367. that Abraham

  1368. had lied to.

  1369. Last chapter,

1370. we talked about the cycles.

  1371. Abraham fell into

  1372. the same sin

  1373. that he committed

  1374. in Egypt

  1375. in chapter 12.

1376. Did the same thing again.

  1377. He was afraid.

  1378. He was fearful

1379. of what Abimelech would do.

  1380. And he thought

  1381. that Abimelech

  1382. would think Sarah

  1383. was very beautiful

1384. and take him as his wife.

  1385. And so he lied.

  1386. He said this half-truth

  1387. and said,

  1388. Sarah is my son.

  1389. My sister.

  1390. And so that brought

  1391. God's judgment

  1392. upon Abimelech

1393. and on his whole kingdom.

  1394. That's what we read

1395. last week in chapter 20.

  1396. But yet,

  1397. Abimelech comes back

  1398. and says to Abraham,

  1399. God is with you

  1400. in all you do.

  1401. And yeah,

  1402. we talked about

  1403. the cycles

  1404. in our spiritual life

1405. of the highs and lows

  1406. in our lives.

  1407. We see ourselves

1408. slipping into the same sins

  1409. again.

  1410. Abraham was a coward

1411. who sold his wife out.

  1412. But yet,

  1413. God was with him.

  1414. Yet,

  1415. God was with him.

  1416. And that shows us

  1417. it's not by

  1418. our efforts.

  1419. It's not the strength

  1420. of our

  1421. walk with God.

  1422. By our efforts.

  1423. That's not why

  1424. Abraham,

1425. God was with Abraham there.

  1426. No,

  1427. Abraham sinned.

  1428. He was fearful.

  1429. He was afraid.

1430. He didn't look to God.

  1431. But,

1432. God was still with him.

  1433. That's the promise.

1434. That God shows us grace

  1435. despite our sins.

  1436. That's the good news.

  1437. That's what Abraham

  1438. was met with.

  1439. Yet,

  1440. God's grace

  1441. doesn't just forgive us.

  1442. It transforms us also.

  1443. God meets us

  1444. in our sin,

  1445. but he doesn't

  1446. leave us there.

  1447. Abraham lied

  1448. to Abimelech

  1449. in chapter 20.

  1450. But now,

  1451. Abraham,

  1452. Abimelech comes to Abraham

1453. to make a treaty with him.

  1454. He's looking to Abraham

1455. to keep his word now

  1456. right after Abraham

  1457. lied to him.

  1458. Abraham's becoming someone

  1459. who can be trusted.

  1460. God's faithfulness

  1461. to us

  1462. produces faithfulness

  1463. in us also.

  1464. And,

  1465. before they make

  1466. their treaty,

  1467. Abraham takes

  1468. this opportunity

  1469. to hash out

  1470. this dispute

  1471. with Abimelech

  1472. about water.

  1473. Water's important

  1474. because they're

  1475. in the wilderness.

  1476. And just as Ishmael

  1477. ran out of water

  1478. without a well,

  1479. Abraham

  1480. will also run out

  1481. of water.

  1482. He won't be able

1483. to stay in that area

  1484. without a well

  1485. and he'll have to

1486. move out of that land

  1487. somewhere else.

  1488. He can't stay there

  1489. without a well,

  1490. without water to access.

  1491. And it says that

  1492. Abraham had earlier

  1493. dug a well

  1494. in that area,

  1495. but Abimelech's servant

  1496. took it.

  1497. And so Abraham

  1498. confronts Abimelech

  1499. about it.

  1500. And they come to

  1501. an agreement.

  1502. Abimelech agrees

  1503. that he will

  1504. recognize that the well

  1505. is Abraham's.

  1506. They deal kindly

  1507. with one another.

  1508. And as a witness

  1509. to this,

  1510. Abraham offers

  1511. seven eulams

  1512. to Abimelech.

  1513. In verse 30,

  1514. it says,

  1515. these seven eulams

  1516. you will take

  1517. from my hand

  1518. that they will

  1519. be a witness

  1520. for me

  1521. that I dug

  1522. this well.

  1523. And therefore,

  1524. that place

  1525. was called

  1526. Beersheba

  1527. because they,

  1528. they're both

  1529. of them

  1530. swore an oath.

  1531. And there's,

  1532. there's a bit

  1533. more wordplay

  1534. here also.

  1535. Beersheba

  1536. means well

  1537. of seven.

  1538. So Sheva

  1539. is seven,

  1540. but it can

  1541. also mean

  1542. oath.

  1543. So they settled

  1544. this oath

  1545. with seven eulams

  1546. and say,

  1547. they call this

  1548. Beersheba,

  1549. well of seven,

  1550. well of oath

  1551. as a witness

  1552. that the oath

  1553. was made

  1554. between them.

  1555. Now that name

  1556. Beersheba

  1557. also tells us

  1558. something important

  1559. about where

  1560. Abraham is

  1561. at the moment.

  1562. Beersheba

  1563. is a name

  1564. that comes up

  1565. later in the Bible.

  1566. It marks

  1567. the southern

  1568. border

  1569. of the promised

  1570. land.

  1571. Later,

  1572. for example,

  1573. in Samuel

  1574. chapter three,

  1575. verse 20,

  1576. it talks about

  1577. how all of

  1578. Israel

  1579. from Dan

  1580. to Beersheba,

  1581. all of Israel

  1582. from Dan

  1583. to Beersheba

  1584. in Samuel

  1585. three.

  1586. It's kind of

  1587. like saying,

  1588. if I say

  1589. all of Hong

  1590. Kong

  1591. from Saikong

  1592. to Lantau,

  1593. right,

  1594. Lantau on the

  1595. west,

  1596. Saikong to the

  1597. east.

  1598. Beersheba

  1599. is on the

  1600. edge of the

  1601. promised land

  1602. in the south.

  1603. And that's

  1604. where we find

  1605. Abraham here,

  1606. on the edge

  1607. of the promised

  1608. land.

  1609. Now,

  1610. remember God's

  1611. promise to

  1612. Abraham.

  1613. He promised

  1614. to give

  1615. Abraham a

  1616. son,

  1617. to make him

  1618. into a great

  1619. nation.

  1620. There's a

  1621. promise of a

  1622. son,

  1623. and there's

  1624. also this

  1625. promise of

  1626. land.

  1627. There's also

  1628. the promise

  1629. that he will

  1630. have land.

  1631. So,

  1632. in the 25

  1633. years of

  1634. waiting,

  1635. in the 25

  1636. years,

  1637. we see

  1638. part of

  1639. God's promise

  1640. fulfilled.

  1641. We see

  1642. it's fulfilled

  1643. in part,

  1644. that Abraham

  1645. now has the

  1646. promised child.

  1647. He has Isaac.

  1648. God gave

  1649. him Isaac,

  1650. just as he

  1651. had promised,

  1652. as he had

  1653. said at the

  1654. time that he

  1655. had said,

  1656. but yet,

  1657. we see the

  1658. other part of

  1659. the promise

  1660. is not yet

  1661. there.

  1662. Abraham still

  1663. doesn't have

  1664. the land.

  1665. He still

  1666. doesn't have

  1667. the promised

  1668. land.

  1669. Abraham,

  1670. he has his

  1671. well in

  1672. Beersheba,

  1673. but he's

  1674. still a

  1675. foreigner.

  1676. He's still

  1677. this foreigner

  1678. who has to

  1679. negotiate with

  1680. this foreign

  1681. king for

  1682. water.

  1683. The promise

  1684. is fulfilled

  1685. already on

  1686. one hand,

  1687. but on the

  1688. other part,

  1689. not yet.

  1690. The promised

  1691. child,

  1692. but not

  1693. the promised

  1694. land.

  1695. But yet,

  1696. let's see what

  1697. Abraham does.

  1698. Let's see what

  1699. Abraham does

  1700. in verse 33.

  1701. It says,

  1702. Abraham planted

  1703. a tamarisk tree

  1704. in Beersheba

  1705. and called

  1706. there on

  1707. the name

  1708. of the

  1709. Lord,

  1710. the everlasting

  1711. God.

  1712. Planted a

  1713. tree in

  1714. Beersheba

  1715. and called

  1716. on the

  1717. name of

  1718. the Lord.

  1719. So he

  1720. planted a

  1721. tree.

  1722. Why a

  1723. tree?

  1724. I have a few

  1725. plants at home

  1726. and I'm not

  1727. an expert at

  1728. plants.

  1729. I actually

  1730. forgot to water

  1731. them this

  1732. week.

  1733. But you

  1734. don't have

  1735. to be a

  1736. gardener to

  1737. know that it

  1738. takes time for

  1739. plants to go.

  1740. It takes years,

  1741. decades.

  1742. Trees don't

  1743. grow overnight.

  1744. Trees take

  1745. time to grow.

  1746. And once they

  1747. grow, they

  1748. could last for

  1749. 50 years,

  1750. 100 years.

  1751. There's something

  1752. future looking,

  1753. forward looking,

  1754. from this act of

  1755. planting a tree.

  1756. It will be years,

  1757. decades before he

  1758. can sit under

  1759. the full shade

  1760. of the tree.

  1761. And this tree

  1762. will provide,

  1763. it will be good

  1764. for future

  1765. generations,

  1766. for decades,

  1767. for years.

  1768. And that's why

  1769. he plants it.

  1770. Why does he do

  1771. it though?

  1772. It's because he's

  1773. planting it in

  1774. faith.

  1775. He's planting it.

  1776. Even though he's a

  1777. foreigner, even

  1778. though he doesn't

  1779. own this land,

  1780. even though he's

  1781. just a sojourner,

  1782. he has to negotiate

  1783. with a foreign

  1784. king.

  1785. He trusts that

  1786. God will fulfill

  1787. his promise.

  1788. God will give me

  1789. the land.

  1790. He will be good

  1791. for his promise.

  1792. And not only

  1793. did he plant

  1794. the tree,

  1795. he worships

  1796. there and calls

  1797. on the name

  1798. of the Lord

  1799. there, the

  1800. everlasting God,

  1801. El Olam,

  1802. the everlasting

  1803. God.

  1804. That is also

  1805. an act of

  1806. faith, trusting

  1807. that God in

  1808. the future

  1809. will do what

  1810. he promised.

  1811. The everlasting

  1812. God can fulfill

  1813. everlasting promises.

  1814. Even if this

  1815. tree takes time

  1816. to grow and

  1817. Abraham doesn't

  1818. fully see it,

  1819. even if this

  1820. tree outlives

  1821. him, God's

  1822. promises will

  1823. outlast his

  1824. lifetime.

  1825. He planted this

  1826. tree in faith.

  1827. He was sitting

  1828. on the edge

  1829. of the promised

  1830. land, holding

  1831. the child of

  1832. promise, but

  1833. still foreigners

  1834. living in

  1835. tents.

  1836. He had the

  1837. promised child,

  1838. but he was

  1839. waiting for the

  1840. promised land.

  1841. And that is

  1842. exactly where we

  1843. are today, too.

  1844. That's our

  1845. situation here

  1846. today.

  1847. Because if

  1848. waiting 25 years

  1849. for Isaac seemed

  1850. a long time,

  1851. the world, we

  1852. waited thousands

  1853. of years for

  1854. the true child

  1855. of promise,

  1856. for Jesus to

  1857. come into the

  1858. picture.

  1859. And we see that

  1860. Jesus has already

  1861. come.

  1862. He came 2,000

  1863. years ago.

  1864. We have this

  1865. promise on one

  1866. hand.

  1867. Jesus came in

  1868. the flesh.

  1869. He died on the

  1870. cross for our

  1871. sins, just as

  1872. God has said.

  1873. And he rose on

  1874. the third day,

  1875. just as God had

  1876. promised.

  1877. And all the

  1878. promises of God

  1879. are yes and

  1880. amen in Christ.

  1881. We have this

  1882. already because the

  1883. promised child has

  1884. come.

  1885. God's promise

  1886. of the

  1887. already and the

  1888. not yet.

  1889. We have God's

  1890. promise already,

  1891. but also not

  1892. yet.

  1893. The kingdom of

  1894. God is here

  1895. already, but we

  1896. don't see it fully

  1897. in its entirety.

  1898. We know we have

  1899. the Holy Spirit.

  1900. We have this

  1901. guarantee of our

  1902. inheritance.

  1903. We have access to

  1904. God through faith in

  1905. Jesus.

  1906. But we know just

  1907. like after Isaac is

  1908. born, there's still

  1909. conflict.

  1910. There's still

  1911. brokenness in this

  1912. world.

  1913. We still live in

  1914. that cycle of sin.

  1915. We still live

  1916. thinking, why do I

  1917. still do the same

  1918. thing that I've

  1919. been doing for

  1920. decades?

  1921. Why is there still

  1922. brokenness in my

  1923. life?

  1924. And it's because

  1925. we're living in

  1926. foreigners, as

  1927. foreigners in the

  1928. promised land.

  1929. This world is not

  1930. our home.

  1931. We desire a

  1932. better country, a

  1933. heavenly one, the

  1934. city with

  1935. foundations, whose

  1936. designer and

  1937. builders is God.

  1938. We see in this

  1939. world the

  1940. brokenness, and

  1941. that's a

  1942. reminder that

  1943. this isn't our

  1944. home.

  1945. We're longing for

  1946. a taste of

  1947. home.

  1948. Just like

  1949. Abraham planting

  1950. a tree in

  1951. Beersheba.

  1952. We live now

  1953. between the

  1954. ready and not

  1955. yet.

  1956. How do we do

  1957. that?

  1958. How do we live

  1959. in that tension?

  1960. We can follow

  1961. Abraham's faith.

  1962. We can follow

  1963. Abraham's faith.

  1964. First, remember.

  1965. That's what

  1966. Abraham does.

  1967. Remember.

  1968. Look back and

  1969. remember God's

  1970. faithfulness.

  1971. How did

  1972. Abraham had

  1973. faith to plant

  1974. this tree and

  1975. worship?

  1976. You can look

  1977. back to the

  1978. beginning of the

  1979. chapter.

  1980. Isaac was born

  1981. just as God

  1982. had said, just

  1983. as God has

  1984. promised.

  1985. And so we can

  1986. look forward and

  1987. trust that he

  1988. will inherit the

  1989. land in the

  1990. future, just as

  1991. God has

  1992. promised.

  1993. He did it

  1994. before and

  1995. he'll do it

  1996. again.

  1997. When we look

  1998. at our lives,

  1999. what's a

  2000. promise, what's

  2001. a problem that

  2002. we have now?

  2003. What's something

  2004. that is making

  2005. us anxious now?

  2006. Maybe it's

  2007. finances, where

  2008. to live, conflict

  2009. with someone, or

  2010. that cycle of

  2011. sin that we

  2012. still live in.

  2013. When we see

  2014. that in our

  2015. lives, let's

  2016. face it with

  2017. faith, like

  2018. Abraham.

  2019. Look back at

  2020. our lives.

  2021. Remembered when

  2022. we prayed for

  2023. something, when

  2024. we waited.

  2025. maybe 25

  2026. years like

  2027. Isaac.

  2028. And God

  2029. answered, and

  2030. we said, at

  2031. last, at

  2032. last this

  2033. came.

  2034. If he was

  2035. faithful then, he

  2036. will be faithful

  2037. now.

  2038. And the

  2039. thing that we

  2040. can look back

  2041. to the most, the

  2042. solid hope that

  2043. we have, is we

  2044. can look back

  2045. 2,000 years to

  2046. what Jesus did

  2047. on the cross, and

  2048. know that if

  2049. God gave us

  2050. his son, if

  2051. he was willing

  2052. to do that, if

  2053. he was willing to

  2054. send his son to

  2055. die for us and

  2056. rise from the

  2057. dead, if I can

  2058. trust God with

  2059. my soul, and

  2060. I can trust him

  2061. with anything

  2062. else.

  2063. If God went

  2064. through all this

  2065. pain and effort

  2066. to save me, then

  2067. he will surely

  2068. take me home.

  2069. He won't waste

  2070. that.

  2071. He will finish

  2072. the good work he

  2073. began in me and

  2074. take me home.

2075. We can hold on to

  2076. that promise.

  2077. We remember, and

  2078. also we can

  2079. rejoice.

  2080. We can rejoice.

  2081. When we remember,

  2082. that should move us

  2083. to worship.

  2084. Like Abraham, when

  2085. he saw God's

  2086. promise fulfilled,

  2087. Isaac came,

  2088. something that was

  2089. impossible, he

  2090. laughed, and he

  2091. called on the name

  2092. of the Lord, El

  2093. Olam, and

  2094. worshipped the

  2095. everlasting God

  2096. with joy.

  2097. And we also, when

  2098. we see God's

  2099. promise fulfilled,

  2100. we can rejoice with

  2101. joy that is

  2102. inexpressible and

  2103. filled with glory.

  2104. God's faithfulness

  2105. moves us to

  2106. worship with joy.

  2107. And also, we

  2108. respond.

  2109. We respond in

  2110. obedience.

  2111. Abraham obeyed,

  2112. named his son

  2113. Isaac, circumcised

  2114. his son Isaac, and

  2115. he obeyed, and

  2116. he responded by

  2117. worshipping and

  2118. planting this tree.

  2119. What are we

  2120. relying on to

  2121. build our home

  2122. here?

  2123. God told Abraham,

  2124. it's not through,

  2125. your future won't

  2126. be through Ishmael,

  2127. not through your

  2128. efforts, but only

  2129. through my grace

  2130. and promises.

  2131. Where are we

  2132. trying to

  2133. manufacture our

  2134. security?

  2135. What are our

  2136. backup plans?

  2137. And we trust

  2138. Jesus will come

  2139. again.

  2140. The call today

  2141. is don't be

  2142. satisfied with

  2143. what's here and

  2144. now.

  2145. Don't be like

  2146. Lot's wife, who

  2147. turned back, whose

  2148. hearts were tied

  2149. up with this world

  2150. that's going up in

  2151. flames.

  2152. But to look

  2153. forward to the

  2154. city to come.

  2155. And when our

  2156. eyes are set on

  2157. heaven, that

  2158. moves us to

  2159. obey.

  2160. Are we

  2161. investing all

  2162. our energy into

  2163. temporary homes,

  2164. into tents?

  2165. Or are we

  2166. planting seeds in

  2167. the kingdom of

  2168. heaven, planting

  2169. trees like

  2170. Abraham?

  2171. That might look

  2172. like discipling the

  2173. next generation

  2174. in Kidswell at

  2175. GU, knowing that

  2176. it might take years

  2177. to bear fruit,

  2178. could be giving

  2179. sacrificially to

  2180. support people,

  2181. spreading the

  2182. gospel to people

  2183. we will never see

  2184. in our lives,

  2185. in places that

  2186. we will never

  2187. visit, but that

  2188. we will see in

  2189. eternity.

  2190. What will we

  2191. sow in light of

  2192. eternity?

  2193. And that wait

  2194. might feel long

  2195. now.

  2196. It was 25 years

  2197. for Isaac.

  2198. It was a thousand

  2199. years for Christ.

  2200. And we're still

  2201. waiting.

  2202. We're waiting for

  2203. Christ to return

  2204. a second time.

  2205. But we know

  2206. there's one thing

  2207. for sure, that

  2208. Christ has come

  2209. and he will come

  2210. again.

  2211. One day, this

  2212. wait will finally

  2213. be over and it

  2214. will be worth it.

  2215. It will be better

  2216. than a bite of

  2217. Jollibee's, better

  2218. than a matcha

  2219. latte because we

  2220. won't just get a

  2221. taste of home.

  2222. It won't just be a

  2223. taste of home.

  2224. We will finally be

  2225. home.

  2226. We will see him

2227. face to face in his

  2228. presence with

  2229. fullness of joy.

  2230. God has promised

2231. and we can take him

  2232. at his word.

  2233. So let's follow

  2234. the footsteps of

  2235. Abraham and faith

  2236. between the two

  2237. promises and trust

  2238. and live with faith.

  2239. Let's pray.
