  1. Now, I'm not very good at standing still, so I'm not going to stand still over here.

  2. I shall wander around and I hope that that's okay and that you can still see me.

  3. Well, in that passage, we heard Jesus talking to Nicodemus.

  4. And as we heard right at the beginning, he's a Pharisee.

  5. He's a member of the Jewish council.

  6. He should not be seen speaking to Jesus.

  7. And so, he comes at night.

  8. He hides in the darkness.

  9. Coming to speak with Jesus was him living a bit dangerously, really.

  10. But curiosity about Jesus had got the better of him.

  11. He calls Jesus Rabbi.

  12. He recognizes that Jesus is a teacher.

  13. As many others did at that time who had heard him, heard his teaching as he taught remarkable things with remarkable stories in remarkable ways.

  14. But because he's also seen the things that Jesus has done, he wants to know more.

  15. He's recognizing that God is here amongst them in a new way.

  16. And he wants to understand.

  17. And Jesus challenges him to come into the light, to be born again, to come out of the shadows and into the light.

  18. There's loads of references in the Bible about light.

  19. It's one of those things you'll read of over and over again.

  20. Right there, right at the beginning in Genesis.

  21. Let there be light.

  22. And in the New Testament, we hear lots of images, lots of words about light.

  23. John's gospel speaks about the light shining in the darkness and the light that gives life to everyone.

  24. Paul talks about a kingdom of light.

  25. And Peter talks of the followers of Jesus as being called into God's light.

  26. Moving from a place of darkness.

  27. Moving into God's light.

  28. With God's understanding.

  29. With God's spirit.

  30. Being born again.

  31. Jesus, of course, also used light to talk about himself, didn't he?

  32. He said, I am the light of the world.

  33. And just as he did with Nicodemus, he tells his followers to be light and to reflect his light.

  34. The light of life that gives life to all people.

  35. And of course, the same is true with us.

  36. When we recognize Jesus as for who he is,

  37. when we grab hold of his hand and recognize who he is and all he did for us,

  38. and we step into that light, we too can be born again.

  39. The Son of God.

  40. He challenges Nicodemus and he challenges us to step out into that light.

  41. So what?

  42. What does that look like?

  43. What does it mean for us to live as disciples in the light?

  44. First of all, of course, we need to be seen.

  45. I think we might have a slide that, there we go, we need to be seen.

  46. I'm sure you'll recognize those as sparklers.

  47. And there's a story told of a little girl who was shivering her way along the main street one winter's evening.

  48. And she saw a church with the lights pouring out and she could hear music.

  49. And as she was cold, she went into the church to warm herself for a little while.

  50. And as she listened to the preacher, she heard him say,

  51. I am the light of the world.

  52. So at the end of the service, as she was coming out and the preacher was stood at the door,

  53. as preachers often do.

  54. And she said, did you say that you were the light of the world?

  55. No, said the preacher.

  56. Jesus is the light of the world.

  57. Those of us that believe in him are like little lights.

  58. And the little girl looked at him for a moment and said,

  59. Well, I wish you'd come down here and shine in my alley

  60. because it's cold and it's dark down there.

  61. I think it packs quite a punch, that story about how we be God's light,

  62. where we go, how we show, how we be God's people in the world,

  63. reminding us that we need to live out the faith that we proclaim.

  64. And yes, that can be a little overwhelming to think that day by day,

  65. minute by minute, we're living out as God's disciples.

  66. It can be hugely challenging.

  67. Because I don't know about you, but not long after I've had my breakfast,

  68. I kind of mess up.

  69. Living each and every day is hard work, isn't it?

  70. And what if we mess up and someone sees us?

  71. Have you ever had anyone say to you,

  72. I thought you were a Christian?

  73. Anyone ever had that said to them?

  74. I know I have.

  75. Maybe sometimes if I get a bit impatient at the supermarket

  76. or I'm sitting in a traffic jam,

  77. I'm not very good at sitting in traffic.

  78. Particularly if two lorries are driving side by side,

  79. you know, one in the inside lane and one in the middle lane

  80. and neither's overtaking the other,

  81. I get quite frustrated.

  82. There's a whole list of things that I could tell you about times

  83. when I am not always patient

  84. and struggle sometimes to live as a disciple.

  85. But when I was younger,

  86. can we have the next picture?

  87. I had one of these.

  88. In fact, I still got it in my drawer upstairs,

  89. in the bedroom upstairs.

  90. Has anyone ever had one of these?

  91. A what would Jesus do bracelet

  92. to remind us to do what Jesus would do.

  93. So if we're having a, you know,

  94. what on earth do I do?

  95. Well, what would Jesus do?

  96. To remind us to live out the life

  97. that he has called to us.

  98. Although, to be honest,

  99. what would Jesus do on the M5 sometimes?

  100. Sometimes it's hard, isn't it?

  101. Yes, people watch us.

  102. Of course they watch us.

  103. They wait quite excited about the fact

  104. that we might actually make a mistake

  105. and then they can pull us up and say,

  106. ha ha, I thought you were a Christian.

  107. And it might mean that sometimes

  108. we feel that we better wait a while.

  109. We stay in the shadows for a little bit

  110. until we're better at being Christians.

  111. You know, until we're perfect

  112. and we've got it all sussed.

  113. And then, when we're better,

  114. we can step out of the shadows

  115. because now we're better Christians than we were.

  116. We're more proficient.

  117. We make fewer mistakes.

  118. But actually, the mistakes that we make

  119. are actually part and parcel

  120. of living as a light in God's world.

  121. Because it's not about the mistake.

  122. It's about how you deal with the mistakes.

  123. We can never be perfect,

  124. which is quite good news for me.

  125. Can never, ever be perfect.

  126. But that's okay.

  127. Because actually,

  128. when we go to one another and seek forgiveness,

  129. when we've hurt one another,

  130. when we've done what we shouldn't do

  131. and we come before God asking for forgiveness

  132. in need of his grace,

  133. people see that too.

  134. I thought you were a Christian

  135. and yes, I've done that wrong.

  136. But actually, I know that.

  137. And I've come before God to say sorry

  138. and to hear about and to receive his grace.

  139. We don't have to wait

  140. until we're perfect Christians.

  141. Thank heavens, literally, for that.

  142. We need to step out of the shadows,

  143. trusting in God's grace

  144. for what he calls us to do.

  145. I always think of God's grace

  146. as a kind of safety net.

  147. It's there for us.

  148. It catches us if we fall.

  149. We can draw strength on him,

  150. from him, once again.

  151. His grace holds us

  152. and keeps us

  153. as we come to him.

  154. And that's good news, isn't it?

  155. And so as Christians,

  156. we need to be seen warts and all

  157. because those warts

  158. and how we deal with them

  159. are key to showing others

  160. what it means to walk

  161. in the light of God.

  162. But as disciples,

  163. we need to be seen

  164. and we need to be heard.

  165. We need to be light

  166. in a difficult and dark world,

  167. even when that is hard,

  168. even when that makes us unpopular.

  169. There is no such thing

  170. as a secret disciple

  171. in a world,

  172. in a country

  173. where we are free to gather,

  174. where we are free

  175. to read our Bibles,

  176. where we are free

  177. to live out the faith

  178. that we proclaim.

  179. Our faith is not private.

  180. It shouldn't be private.

  181. Personal, yes.

  182. but private, no.

  183. For our faith

  184. is what we live out

  185. in the everyday world.

  186. Free to read our Bibles,

  187. free to step out of the shadows

  188. and into the light.

  189. And not for our own sake.

  190. We're not born again.

  191. We don't receive God's Spirit.

  192. We don't step into that light

  193. for our own sake.

  194. And we do so

  195. for the sake of the world.

  196. Jesus says,

  197. come into the light

  198. so that others can see

  199. what God is doing.

  200. If we look at Matthew's gospel

  201. and he tells us of Jesus saying,

  202. let your light shine before others.

  203. This little light of mine,

  204. I'm going to let it shine.

  205. I'm sure some of you remember

  206. singing that at school.

  207. I certainly do.

  208. Let it shine before others

  209. so that they may see

  210. your good works

  211. and give glory

  212. to God in heaven.

  213. A light that needs to be seen.

  214. A light that isn't hidden

  215. under a basket.

  216. Not so that people might think

  217. how amazing we are

  218. as Christians,

  219. but so they can glimpse

  220. through our words

  221. and through our actions.

  222. So they can glimpse

  223. just for a moment

  224. that little bit

  225. of God's kingdom.

  226. the love and grace

  227. of God

  228. that is for all people.

  229. Now I remember

  230. at the turn

  231. of the millennium,

  232. does anyone remember

  233. the turn of the millennium?

  234. It's 26 years ago.

  235. How can that be?

  236. It made me feel really old

  237. when I thought about it.

  238. But I can remember

  239. 26 years ago

  240. watching the television

  241. as we move

  242. not just into a new year

  243. but into a new millennium.

  244. And I remember it

  245. because Mike and I

  246. decided that we should

  247. wake up the children

  248. so that they saw

  249. this bit of history too.

  250. Because it was really important

  251. they could say

  252. they remember

  253. moving into the new millennium.

  254. Well, Matt was only four

  255. so he doesn't really

  256. remember it at all.

  257. But I remember

  258. when we sat there,

  259. the four of us

  260. as the clock struck midnight

  261. and the new year

  262. and the new millennium

  263. rolled in

  264. beacons were lit

  265. across the UK

  266. and it was a really

  267. powerful moment.

  268. And of course

  269. that happened again

  270. at the late Queen's

  271. Platinum Jubilee celebration.

  272. She lit the first

  273. of those beacons

  274. and beacons were lit

  275. right across the UK.

  276. Really powerful moment

  277. marking a really

  278. important moment.

  279. Beacons

  280. burning brightly.

  281. And to me

  282. it felt like a very

  283. hopeful sign.

  284. And that's

  285. what we are called to be.

  286. When the world

  287. seems hopeless

  288. we are called

  289. to be hope

  290. by burning

  291. brightly.

  292. Beacons

  293. of light

  294. and of hope.

  295. Blazing with the

  296. reflected light

  297. of God.

  298. Just as the moon

  299. reflects the light

  300. of the sun

  301. so we are challenged

  302. to reflect

  303. the light

  304. of Jesus.

  305. To shine

  306. unhampered

  307. without that fear

  308. of getting things wrong

  309. because we have

  310. God's grace

  311. to catch us

  312. without that

  313. embarrassment

  314. that we might feel.

  315. That fear

  316. that actually

  317. someone might

  318. find us out.

  319. To shine

  320. not for our own

  321. glory

  322. but for the

  323. glory of

  324. God.

  325. And when I'm

  326. preparing a

  327. talk or a sermon

  328. or whatever you

  329. want to call it

  330. I always look

  331. at different

  332. translations

  333. of the Bible

  334. to see if they

  335. might help

  336. bring some

  337. new parts

  338. or a new

  339. ones that I'd

  340. not really

  341. picked up

  342. before.

  343. And I read

  344. the message

  345. whilst I was

  346. looking at this

  347. and the Bible

  348. puts it this way

  349. you are here

  350. to be light

  351. bringing out

  352. the colours

  353. in God's

  354. world.

  355. God is not

  356. a secret

  357. to be kept.

  358. I love that

  359. the bringing

  360. out of the

  361. colours

  362. in God's

  363. world.

  364. And they

  365. bring to mind

  366. that picture

  367. there of

  368. a prism

  369. that beam

  370. of light

  371. travelling

  372. through the

  373. prism

  374. and that's

  375. splitting

  376. into the

  377. beautiful

  378. colours

  379. of the

  380. rainbow.

  381. That's what

  382. we are called

  383. to be

  384. as light.

  385. And how

  386. do we do

  387. that?

  388. Well

  389. you might be

  390. familiar with

  391. the Micah

  392. challenge

  393. the prophet

  394. Micah

  395. talks about

  396. how we

  397. do that

  398. how we

  399. live

  400. as

  401. Christians

  402. and

  403. again

  404. I

  405. use

  406. the

  407. message

  408. version

  409. it

  410. says

  411. this

  412. God's

  413. already

  414. made

  415. it

  416. plain

  417. as to

  418. how to

  419. live

  420. and what

  421. to do

  422. what God

  423. is looking

  424. for in

  425. men and

  426. women

  427. is quite

  428. simple

  429. do what

  430. is fair

  431. and just

  432. to your

  433. neighbour

  434. be

  435. compassionate

  436. and loyal

  437. in your

  438. love

  439. don't take

  440. yourself

  441. too

  442. seriously

  443. take

  444. God

  445. seriously

  446. it's a

  447. challenge

  448. that

  449. isn't

  450. it

  451. a

  452. challenge

  453. to do

  454. what is

  455. just

  456. and fair

  457. compassionate

  458. and loyal

  459. to do

  460. what that

  461. little girl

  462. asked

  463. I wish

  464. you could

  465. come down

  466. here and

  467. hang out

  468. in our

  469. alley

  470. because

  471. it's

  472. cold

  473. and it's

  474. dark

  475. down

  476. here

  477. welcoming

  478. the

  479. stranger

  480. feeding

  481. the

  482. hungry

  483. showing

  484. compassion

  485. speaking

  486. out

  487. against

  488. injustice

  489. crossing

  490. the barriers

  491. of race

  492. gender

  493. and class

  494. and all

  495. those

  496. decisive

  497. barriers

  498. that

  499. we

  500. put

  501. in

  502. place

  503. we

  504. can't

  505. proclaim

  506. faith

  507. unless

  508. we

  509. live

  510. it

  511. we

  512. need

  513. to

  514. shine

  515. not

  516. hide

  517. in the

  518. shadows

  519. like

  520. Nicodemus

  521. did

  522. to

  523. step

  524. out

  525. to

  526. know

  527. Jesus

  528. to

  529. seek

  530. his

  531. grace

  532. to

  533. be

  534. forgiven

  535. to

  536. be

  537. filled

  538. with

  539. his

  540. spirit

  541. to

  542. be

  543. born

  544. again

  545. there's

  546. a story

  547. told

  548. about

  549. Saint

  550. Francis

  551. of Assisi

  552. a man

  553. who gave

  554. away

  555. everything

  556. he had

  557. to the

  558. poor

  559. who walked

  560. unarmed

  561. into a

  562. Muslim

  563. camp

  564. in the

  565. holy

  566. land

  567. in the

  568. hope

  569. of

  570. stopping

  571. a

  572. war

  573. who

  574. inspired

  575. millions

  576. of

  577. people

  578. to

  579. love

  580. and

  581. sacrifice

  582. for

  583. others

  584. a man

  585. who

  586. truly

  587. did

  588. step

  589. out

  590. of

  591. the

  592. shadows

  593. and

  594. reflected

  595. the

  596. incredible

  597. love

  598. of

  599. God

  600. a man

  601. who

  602. did

  603. that

  604. this

  605. is a

  606. story

  607. one

  608. day

  609. he

  610. and

  611. a

  612. brother

  613. monk

  614. entered

  615. a

  616. small

  617. village

  618. to

  619. preach

  620. the

  621. gospel

  622. they

  623. began

  624. chatting

  625. with

  626. the

  627. villagers

  628. listening

  629. to

  630. their

  631. stories

  632. of

  633. hardship

  634. and

  635. poverty

  636. they

  637. helped

  638. them

  639. in

  640. the

  641. fields

  642. and

  643. in

  644. the

  645. stables

  646. until

  647. the

  648. day

  649. was

  650. nearly

  651. over

  652. and

  653. it

  654. was

  655. time

  656. to

  657. leave

  658. well

  659. Saint

  660. Francis

  661. companion

  662. was

  663. most

  664. concerned

  665. did

  666. we

  667. not

  668. come

  669. here

  670. to

  671. preach

  672. the

  673. gospel

  674. he

  675. asked

  676. Francis

  677. turned

  678. to

  679. his

  680. brother

  681. monk

  682. and

  683. said

  684. if

  685. these

  686. people

  687. have

  688. not

  689. heard

  690. the

  691. gospel

  692. today

  693. then

  694. reading

  695. the

  696. Bible

  697. will

  698. not

  699. make

  700. any

  701. difference

  702. and

  703. so

  704. they

  705. went

  706. on

  707. their

  708. walk

  709. I was

  710. interested

  711. when we

  712. had our

  713. prayers

  714. earlier

  715. on

  716. and

  717. talked

  718. about

  719. how

  720. actually

  721. sometimes

  722. we

  723. are

  724. the

  725. answer

  726. to

  727. the

  728. prayers

  729. that

  730. we

  731. pray

  732. and

  733. I

  734. remember

  735. Sister

  736. Monica

  737. Joan

  738. from

  739. Call

  740. the

  741. Midwife

  742. any

  743. Call

  744. the

  745. Midwife

  746. fans

  747. in

  748. this

  749. morning

  750. yeah

  751. Sister

  752. Monica

  753. Joan

  754. said

  755. this

  756. sometimes

  757. the

  758. hands

  759. of the

  760. almighty

  761. are

  762. at

  763. the

  764. end

  765. of

  766. our

  767. own

  768. arms

  769. sometimes

  770. the

  771. prayers

  772. we

  773. pray

  774. we

  775. play

  776. a

  777. part

  778. in

  779. answering

  780. in

  781. doing

  782. in

  783. living

  784. in

  785. being

  786. light

  787. Jesus

  788. says

  789. those

  790. who

  791. do

  792. what

  793. is

  794. right

  795. come

  796. into

  797. the

  798. light

  799. so

  800. that

  801. others

  802. can

  803. see

  804. they

  805. are

  806. doing

  807. what

  808. God

  809. wants

  810. so I

  811. wonder

  812. wonder

  813. where you

  814. can be

  815. where you

  816. can bring

  817. God's

  818. colours

  819. God's

  820. God's

  821. light

  822. God's

  823. love

  824. this

  825. week

  826. so

  827. let's

  828. pray

  829. Father

  830. we

  831. step out

  832. from the

  833. darkness

  834. and into

  835. the light

  836. you call

  837. us to

  838. do

  839. that

  840. you

  841. call

  842. us

  843. to

  844. live

  845. out

  846. the

  847. faith

  848. that

  849. we

  850. proclaim

  851. and

  852. we're

  853. sorry

  854. that

  855. so

  856. often

  857. we

  858. forget

  859. so

  860. we

  861. come

  862. to

  863. you

  864. with

  865. open

  866. hearts

  867. and

  868. open

  869. hands

  870. letting

  871. go

  872. of all

  873. the

  874. things

  875. that

  876. hold

  877. us

  878. back

  879. asking

  880. that

  881. you

  882. might

  883. show

  884. us

  885. once

  886. again

  887. your

  888. incredible

  889. grace

  890. and

  891. love

  892. that

  893. once

  894. again

  895. we

  896. might

  897. step

  898. out

  899. into

  900. the

  901. light

  902. and

  903. receive

  904. your

  905. grace

  906. your

  907. love

  908. and

  909. your

  910. spirit

  911. and

  912. we're

  913. just

  914. still

  915. for a

  916. moment

  917. for you

  918. alone

  919. know

  920. where

  921. your

  922. heart

  923. is

  924. with

  925. God

  926. are

  927. you

  928. ready

  929. to

  930. step

  931. out

  932. or

  933. to

  934. just

  935. step

  936. out

  937. once

  938. again

  939. are

  940. you

  941. ready

  942. to

  943. offer

  944. your

  945. heart

  946. to

  947. God

  948. you

  949. are

  950. a

  951. generous

  952. and

  953. almighty

  954. God

  955. and we

  956. offer

  957. our

  958. hearts

  959. and our

  960. lives

  961. to

  962. serve

  963. you

  964. give

  965. us

  966. the

  967. strength

  968. the

  969. courage

  970. the

  971. boldness

  972. the

  973. desire

  974. the

  975. audacity

  976. to

  977. be

  978. your

  979. people

  980. this

  981. week

  982. and

  983. in

  984. the

  985. days

  986. to

  987. come

  988. help

  989. us

  990. to

  991. be

  992. sensitive

  993. to

  994. your

  995. guiding

  996. touch

  997. that

  998. we

  999. might

  1000. know

  1001. where

  1002. to

  1003. speak

  1004. where

  1005. to

  1006. be

  1007. we

  1008. thank

  1009. you

  1010. for

  1011. Jesus

  1012. help

  1013. us

  1014. to

  1015. reflect

  1016. the

  1017. light

  1018. that

  1019. he

  1020. gave

  1021. might

  1022. we

  1023. be

  1024. little

  1025. lights

  1026. burning

  1027. so

  1028. brightly

  1029. for

  1030. you

  1031. amen

  1032. may

  1033. may

  1034. !

  1035. may

  1036. may
