  1. Good to see you all.

  2. We've been waiting for 25 years.

  3. We've been waiting for 25 years for Abraham and Sarah to have a baby.

  4. !

  5. The sleepless nights begin here, and from here on out, everything's going to be fine.

  6. It is not the case.

  7. In fact, Genesis chapter 21 was not the climax of Abraham's life.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  8. It is Genesis chapter 22, which is today.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  9. And we're going to be looking at that today.

  10. And I'm going to invite the lovely Emily to come up to read the word of the Lord to us.

  11. As is our tradition, we love to stand for the word of the Lord because it's just God breathed.

  12. It is God's word to us.

  13. And so we stand in reverence and also, can I invite you to stand for the word of the Lord

  14. as Emily reads Genesis chapter 22 to us.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  15. Thank you.

  16. Lovely, James.

  17. Genesis 22.

  18. After these things, God tested Abraham, and he said to him, Abraham.

  19. And he said, here I am.

  20. He said, take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah,

  21. and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  22. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him

  23. and his son Isaac.

  24. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place which God had told him.

  25. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.

  26. Then his eyes...

  27. Oh, sorry.

  28. Then Abraham said to his young men, stay here with the donkey.

  29. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come against you.

  30. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  31. And he took it in his hand, the fire and the knife.

  32. So they went both of them together.

  33. And Isaac said to his father, Abraham, my father.

  34. And he said, here I am, my son.

  35. He said, behold, the fire and the wood.

  36. But where is the lamb for the burnt offering?

  37. Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  38. So they went both of them together.

  39. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order

  40. and bound Isaac, his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  41. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  42. But the angel of the Lord called him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham.

  43. And he said, here I am.

  44. He said, do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  45. For now I know that you fear God.

  46. Seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.

  47. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked.

  48. And behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

  49. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

  50. So Abraham called the name of that place the Lord will provide.

  51. As it is said today, on the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.

  52. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said,

  53. By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son.

  54. I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of the heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.

  55. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies.

  56. And in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because you have obeyed my voice.

  57. So Abraham returned to his young men and they arose and went together to Beersheba.

  58. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

  59. This is the word of the Lord.

  60. Thank you, Emily.

  61. Please take a seat.

  62. Thank you so much, Emily.

  63. We're going to go through this.

  64. But before we go through chapter 22, there's one verse that really just kind of jumped out at me.

  65. It was just the verse just before that at the end of chapter 21.

  66. And it says, because he's got the baby now.

  67. And then he says, and Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.

  68. What an interesting thing.

  69. Honestly, this has been, going through Genesis and going through the story of Abraham has been good for me.

  70. Because if you've, if I've had a chance to talk to you these last few weeks, this is something that I've been wrestling with.

  71. And actually the story of Abraham has really been blessing me.

  72. Because as someone who really, right now, is a little bit of just sojourning going, well, is home England?

  73. Or is home Hong Kong?

  74. Or actually, where is home?

  75. Or what is home?

  76. And then I'm looking at Abraham's story.

  77. This guy was promised so much.

  78. His family would own land.

  79. Lots of land.

  80. And yet he spends the majority of his life as a sojourner living in a tent.

  81. Oh, that just kind of speaks to me that, man, despite all the stuff that he's been promised,

  82. and yet he's actually happy just to sojourn through foreign land, the land of the Philistines.

  83. In fact, one of the only pieces of land he actually ends up owning is a few chapters later where Sarah finally dies

  84. and he actually has to buy her land to bury her.

  85. That's the only thing.

  86. It makes me think, we weren't built for this world.

  87. The city that we belong to is not on this planet.

  88. It's somewhere else.

  89. We're sojourners just like Abraham.

  90. And I'll tell you about my idol.

  91. My idol as in the Christian term of the idol in terms of what I really hold on to and what I really struggle with.

  92. I was talking to Jay and Emily about this the other night.

  93. Control.

  94. Control and comfort.

  95. I love to know what's happening tomorrow.

  96. I love to know that's why children are just a complete wrecking ball into the lives of parents because you no longer have control.

  97. You don't, you're unable to dictate where things go.

  98. You see here at the beginning again, this is interesting.

  99. Genesis chapter 22 is almost a repeat once again of Genesis chapter 12.

Genesis 22 chapter mention Genesis 12 chapter mention

  100. That first call when God says to Abraham, hey, go.

  101. You see the call again where he says, go.

  102. It reminds me, many of you will have heard me tell this story as a 16-year-old when I'd done something that wasn't so good.

  103. And then my dad takes me.

  104. He takes me to the church that we grew up in in Leicester.

  105. We went there just this last summer.

  106. And this crazy thing happens.

  107. He goes and he takes me up to the sanctuary upstairs.

  108. And then he starts bawling his eyes out.

  109. He starts crying.

  110. And then he lies just at the stage, just underneath the cross.

  111. And then, of course, as a teenager, I'm like, OK, I'm in trouble.

  112. But I'm the one who's supposed to be crying, not you.

  113. And what's going on?

  114. And then it was that when he told me, there's a feeling that the Lord is going to take him away early.

  115. And it would be a time that would be unexpected.

  116. And he made me promise him.

  117. He said, James, one thing that you have to promise me, it isn't about education.

  118. It isn't even about looking after your brother and your mother.

  119. Just be true to your calling.

  120. I interpret that as to being, if God tells you to go, you go.

  121. That's it.

  122. And honestly, that's the journey that I've been on since then.

  123. Christina and I, these last few weeks, since we came back from sunny England, maybe a little bit too hot with our air conditioning.

  124. But coming back going, God, where is it that you're calling us to?

  125. What are you calling?

  126. What do you actually want us to do?

  127. We seem like sojourners.

  128. What are we doing here?

  129. And I realized the Christian life is not just about becoming good people who have good behavior.

  130. The Christian life is about responding to the call of God.

  131. Time and time and time again.

  132. The scary thing is, God calls you to go somewhere.

  133. He often doesn't tell you exactly where.

  134. Genesis chapter 12, he says, go.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  135. I want you to leave home and I'll tell you where you'll end up going.

  136. Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  137. Remember those seasons I talked about a couple of weeks ago?

  138. He's gone through a lot of seasons.

  139. He's gone through 25 years, 26 years of just seasons of making mistakes, going up and down, up and down.

  140. And now we reach the climax because God tests him once and for all, one final time and says, go.

  141. Go where?

  142. He said, go.

  143. Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  144. Again, he says, go.

  145. Head in that direction, but I'll tell you where later.

  146. How often when we want to hear the voice of God, it's saying, hey, go.

  147. And God, can you tell us exactly where you're going to tell us to go and what we're going to be exactly going to be doing?

  148. And yet God doesn't do that.

  149. And so we see here Abraham again responding to God, not knowing where to go.

  150. And I love it.

  151. God just calls him by name, Abraham.

  152. So often we think of this God who's just distanced, saying, little minion, little human, obey me, follow me.

  153. But no, it's Abraham.

  154. Abraham, go.

  155. And go and take your son, your only son, almost just to rub salt in the wounds.

  156. Why?

  157. Because just a couple of chapters ago, there was another son.

  158. There was another son, Ishmael.

  159. And God said, I know there was another son.

  160. But I'll bless him and I see him and I hear him.

  161. I want to be okay.

  162. But now Isaac is the only one you have left.

  163. Take your son and offer a burnt.

  164. Go to the land of Moriah where the mountains are and then offer him as a burnt offering.

  165. A lot of us think this is, wait, he's telling him to kill him?

  166. No, it's offer him as a sacrifice, as a burnt offering.

  167. If God was like, hey, I want you to show me how much you love me.

  168. I want you to kill your son.

  169. You'd have to climb a mountain for three days to do that.

  170. You can just go into the tent and make it happen straight away.

  171. But that's not what God's calling him.

  172. God's saying, hey, I want you to take your son, your only son, whom you love,

  173. and go to the land and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  174. Just a little bit of context because this is horrifying.

  175. As we read through scripture, sometimes there are things that we don't understand,

  176. especially the modern day reader does not understand what this is really about.

  177. Bearing in mind, Abraham lived in a time where there was so many societies,

  178. so many pagan societies that would offer human sacrifices to the gods to satisfy them.

  179. And often they would be offering the firstborn, the firstfruits.

  180. You see Cain and Abel, they were offering the firstfruits, right?

  181. So actually, this is not a foreign concept to Abraham.

  182. It's like, whoa, especially because it's the firstborn.

  183. Well, this is the onlyborn now, but this was not a foreign concept to him

  184. because it would have been like, okay, I think God's doing something.

  185. Just a bit more of Jewish context around this.

  186. This idea of the firstfruits or giving your best to God

  187. was something that they would have been familiar with.

  188. Why? Because there is a God, there is a holy God.

  189. There is a God that we need to satisfy.

  190. There is a God, there is a debt to be paid.

  191. And by offering up the sacrifice was almost a symbol of that gratitude, of that repentance.

  192. And so this is not that foreign to Abraham.

  193. And to us, it's just like, whoa, why is this happening?

  194. But to God, he's testing.

  195. Actually, does Abraham truly cherish me, follow me, believe me?

  196. That thing that my dad told me to promise him, to go when God tells you to go,

  197. to be true to your calling.

  198. We did that when I was a teacher in England, and then Christina was working in the hospital.

  199. And so we went.

  200. We have friends here who were with us during that time.

  201. And so we decided, okay, let's quit our jobs.

  202. Let's go work in the church.

  203. But what about kids?

  204. How are we going to provide for our kids?

  205. And then what we found is God just provided more and more for us at each step.

  206. Every time we took that leap of faith, God provided more for us.

  207. But this was all in England.

  208. This was all in the relative comforts of our own home.

  209. And then until God said to us and challenged us eight years ago saying,

  210. hey, do you know all those good gifts that I've given you?

  211. When you took that leap of faith and I came good for you, what if I took all those away?

  212. Are you most appreciative of me because of my gifts?

  213. Or are you appreciative of me because I'm the giver?

  214. And that was the hardest one.

  215. When God gives you gifts and you're like, oh, thank you for this.

  216. Thank you so much.

  217. God, can you just please give me that job?

  218. I would love to work for that company.

  219. It would be such a good thing.

  220. What if God gives it to you?

  221. And then what if then God asks you to take it away?

  222. What's he actually trying to show us in doing that?

  223. And so we see that here as well.

  224. He gives him Isaac finally.

  225. Now, bear in mind, it says, verse 1 says, after these things.

  226. So Isaac was born.

  227. But actually, scholars aren't quite sure exactly how many years have passed since then.

  228. If you go to the National Gallery in London, you'll see portraits, paintings of this scene in Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  229. And often it will actually be Abraham holding a knife, ready to sacrifice his baby boy or little child.

  230. But this isn't the case.

  231. Isaac is actually at least, at the very least, a teenager at this point.

  232. But some believe he's either somewhere between 13 to 30.

  233. Okay?

  234. So it's been a while.

  235. And so then God says, after all these things, take him up.

  236. And then what you see here is just a fascinating turn of events.

  237. And this is where we'll go, verse 3.

  238. So Abraham rose early in the morning.

  239. A lot of people will then use this to say, well, this is radical obedience.

  240. This is just waking up the next morning and just going straight and just, and that's almost the lesson of the sermon.

  241. Hey, when God tells you to do something, do it without questioning.

  242. I'm not sure.

  243. Imagine, who's a parent here?

  244. Who's a father here?

  245. Let's put your hand up with your father.

  246. God tells you the night before, hey, I need you to offer your son, your only son, the one whom you love, as a sacrifice.

  247. And I need you to head to those mountains over there.

  248. Do you think you'll be sleeping that night?

  249. I think he rose up early because he couldn't sleep.

  250. He's lying in bed going, what am I going to tell Sarah?

  251. 25 years ago we've been waiting for this.

  252. Finally, our marriage is in a little bit of a better place.

  253. Really?

  254. Is this what, you know what he's battling with?

  255. He's like, God, this doesn't make sense.

  256. When the command of God seems to conflict with the promises of God.

  257. He's like, wait, God, but you said you'll give me the son and actually then I'll be the father of many.

  258. But now you're telling me to, this doesn't make sense.

  259. Your commands don't seem to match up with your promises.

  260. And no doubt he would have just been spiraling in this.

  261. And so finally day breaks.

  262. He's like, you know what?

  263. Through my life, especially these last 25 years of learning and mistakes constantly, there's one thing.

  264. God must be trusted.

  265. God must be obeyed.

  266. And he always provides, I remember that time when I, in Genesis 12, when I went to Egypt and I lied about Sarah.

  267. And yet somehow he still blessed me with more.

  268. And that time I made that mistake with Hagar.

  269. And yet somehow he continues to still bless me with a son.

  270. And then I went again and I lied about Sarah again.

  271. And then somehow he kept blessing with me more.

  272. So he must be wrestling with these things going, you know what?

  273. My conclusion in the last 25 years, the one lesson that I've learned is God must be trusted.

  274. God must be obeyed.

  275. It's daybreak now.

  276. Let's go.

  277. So he takes, he wakes Isaac up.

  278. He takes him and he takes two young men to go with him.

  279. And this is where you know that Isaac's not just like a two-year-old boy.

  280. He cuts the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

  281. And on the third day, this is a walk.

  282. Like you, I challenge you to even take me for a hike for three hours, but for three days.

  283. Just a walk.

  284. Can you imagine?

  285. Okay, so I don't think he sleeps.

  286. And then he finally goes and gets up.

  287. And then they walk for three days.

  288. This is the constant internal turmoil, the wrestling that he's going through.

  289. Wait, what does this mean?

  290. God, your commands.

  291. God, your promises.

  292. It doesn't make sense to me.

  293. And then just when he sees the mountain, and then Abraham said to his young men,

  294. stay here with the donkey.

  295. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  296. This is really interesting.

  297. He says, okay, this final route, this final part of the route, I'm going to go myself with Isaac.

  298. And this is a really interesting moment here because this is the first,

  299. very first mention of the word worship in scripture.

  300. What does the word mean to Abraham?

  301. It means to fall face down, to surrender, to prostrate oneself.

  302. To a holy God.

  303. Fast forward many, many years now.

  304. What does the word worship mean to us?

  305. For some of it, it means dim lights, synth pads, good songs.

  306. Sometimes not so good songs.

  307. Oh, yeah, the worship of that church wasn't great.

  308. The worship leader sang too long.

  309. I mean, just kept repeating the chorus over and over and over again.

  310. I got bored.

  311. Yeah, the worship wasn't great there.

  312. It was a little bit too lively for me, a little bit too charismatic.

  313. Or a little bit too old-fashioned and boring.

  314. Yeah, I'm not vibing with the worship of that church.

  315. We've come so far from the original meaning and mention of the word worship,

  316. which meant to prostrate oneself, to surrender oneself to a holy God.

  317. In the New Testament, the word worship would mean to ascribe worth.

  318. That's where you worship worth.

  319. It's the saying, God, you are the most valuable thing to me,

  320. even more than the son that I've waited for for 25 years.

  321. I'm going to worship him with you there.

  322. Hey, you guys wait here.

  323. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  324. So he kind of knows that this is a little bit of a test.

  325. And as he's wrestling with this and he's not sleeping

  326. and then he's walking these three days, he's like,

  327. okay, well, the command of God doesn't seem to match with the promise of God,

  328. but God is pretty powerful, so he's going to do something.

  329. Maybe what will happen is I will pretend,

  330. maybe I will offer the sacrifice.

  331. Maybe for a moment, Isaac, our fear will even faint.

  332. And maybe then he'll wake up again and we'll be okay.

  333. Or maybe I do have to actually offer him and maybe he will die.

  334. But God, his promise, his promise,

  335. maybe God will then raise him from the dead is what it says in Hebrews 11.

  336. So actually Abraham, with the full knowledge going,

  337. okay, something's going to happen here that's going to be special.

  338. It isn't just going to be me going up with two people and coming down by myself.

  339. There's going to be more to this is what he's saying.

  340. And so they do it.

  341. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  342. Clever man.

  343. Remember, Abraham's quite old at this point.

  344. He's about 110 years old.

  345. So he's not carrying the wood up the mountain.

  346. So he's saying, teenager, Isaac, this is what I fed you for.

  347. You're going to carry this wood up.

  348. So then he straps the wood onto Isaac and he took his hand, the fire and the knife.

  349. And so they went, both of them together.

  350. And Isaac said to Abraham, and this is where it should break every father's heart.

  351. Verse 7 and 8.

  352. This is kind of the turning point of the passage here.

  353. It says, my father, I know enough to be kind of doing this with you, to trust you.

  354. We have the fire and the wood, but there is no lamb.

  355. I've seen you offer burnt offerings before, and there's usually a lamb.

  356. Where's the lamb?

  357. Abraham says, actually, he says, here I am, my son.

  358. This is the second time he says, here I am, by the way.

  359. He says it to God first, and then he says it to Isaac here.

  360. God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  361. God will see to it.

  362. He doesn't say, hey, cool story.

  363. You're going to be the lamb.

  364. It's going to be really fun, I promise.

  365. Trust me.

  366. It's going to be just fine.

  367. He says, God will see to it.

  368. I don't know how he's going to do it, but he's going to see to it.

  369. So let's just keep going.

  370. And so they both went together, and when they get there,

  371. the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there

  372. and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac, his son,

  373. and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  374. This is every parent's nightmare.

  375. We pray and pray for God to give us the things that we want,

  376. and often some of those include children.

  377. The children are the biggest blessing to us.

  378. But how often do we find this happening even in church,

  379. where when we get the gift of children,

  380. and then the first thing that becomes an idol is our children.

  381. Suddenly it's the gift that God gives us that stops us from going to God.

  382. How often has that happened with our work?

  383. God, please, I'd love to work for that company.

  384. And then you get the job.

  385. And it's like, praise God.

  386. Thank you so much for the job.

  387. And then two Sundays later, sorry, I can't go to church anymore because of my work,

  388. because of the work that you gave me,

  389. because of the child that you gave me needs to nap at that time,

  390. so we're not going to go to church anymore.

  391. We will just watch Zoom online instead.

  392. And then when the child gets older, God, thank you so much for this child,

  393. but we can't come to church anymore because they have tennis lessons,

  394. because we have to take them here, we have to take them there.

  395. God, I want him or her to follow you,

  396. but actually there's all these other things.

  397. And suddenly as parents, our whole lives revolve around our children.

  398. And suddenly the very things that God gives us become the idols that pull him away from us.

  399. Has that happened to any of us?

  400. And you see God here testing Abraham, whether he's fearful of God.

  401. That's what Gav has just said.

  402. That actually, when he does actually, so he gets ready and he holds the knife,

  403. and then the angel calls to him, say, Abraham, Abraham.

  404. And he said, here I am for the third time.

  405. Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  406. For now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.

  407. A couple of weeks ago I quoted one of my favorite devotional books,

  408. My Upmost for His Highest, Charles Ward Chambers, who says,

  409. when you fear God, you won't fear anything else.

  410. But when you don't fear God, you will fear everything else.

  411. All of this is about do we fear God or not.

  412. The word fear isn't terrified, afraid of God.

  413. It is, is there a reverence and awe for who God is.

  414. And actually, I'm just going to trust you with everything.

  415. Even with the things that I hold the most dear to my heart.

  416. And so, because God sees that he fears him and actually trusts him,

  417. he says, hey, stop.

  418. The experiment is over.

  419. The test is done.

  420. You have passed.

  421. There was as much risk here for Abraham as there was for God.

  422. Because if actually Abraham doesn't trust God,

  423. then actually God's salvation plan for the nations does not work.

  424. And for Abraham, if God actually lets him do this, then it's done.

  425. And it isn't just about the sentimental value of,

  426. this is my son who I love.

  427. I won't be able to play football with him anymore.

  428. Now, this is actually back in those days,

  429. the firstborn son, the only son, would have held such significant value

  430. because this was basically your social hope.

  431. This was your way of surviving.

  432. This was your way for your family to continue.

  433. In fact, in those days, the firstborn would get everything.

  434. Why would that firstborn get everything?

  435. They wouldn't separate it with all the siblings

  436. because the moment you separate the inheritance with all the different siblings,

  437. your family becomes weaker.

  438. So it made the most sense to give it all to one person

  439. and have that person be the one who leads the clan after that.

  440. So God's saying, hey, I know I gave you this,

  441. but I want you to entrust not just you and your family with me.

  442. I want you to entrust your whole future with me.

  443. I want you to fear me.

  444. I want you to rely on me.

  445. I want you to trust me and me alone.

  446. Thank the Lord, though.

  447. He stops him, and then he sees a ram.

  448. He sees a sheep that's just, you know, poor ram,

  449. just kind of minding his own business,

  450. and suddenly gets trapped in a thicket by his horns.

  451. And so that ends up being the sacrifice instead.

  452. And then Abraham says, whew, I passed.

  453. I'm going to call this mountain the Lord will provide.

  454. Notice he does not say, I'm going to call this mountain,

  455. this is where I obeyed.

  456. This was not the mountain of obedience.

  457. This isn't where Abraham goes, hey, I actually managed to prove myself.

  458. That's not what he's saying.

  459. He's saying this is where God provided.

  460. This is where God provided for me.

  461. And remember, it's not about just obedience, pure obedience.

  462. Some of us who have grown up in the church,

  463. that's what we think Christianity is about.

  464. Can we just be the good Christians that we were supposed to be,

  465. obey the rules that we were supposed to obey,

  466. not do the things that we're not supposed to do,

  467. and that's what Christianity is about.

  468. That is not what it's about.

  469. The whole point of Christianity, the whole point of the gospel,

  470. is that God provides.

  471. Just like Gabe said last week, that God is a God of promise,

  472. and he actually provides.

  473. And it's only afterwards, it's only after the obedience,

  474. does the provision come.

  475. You only start walking on the water, as John Altberg would say,

  476. after you actually step out of the boat.

  477. But some of us are trapped in this place where,

  478. will God provide or not?

  479. Well, you won't find out until you actually take that step out.

  480. And once you take that step out,

  481. you will realize that God is good for his promise,

  482. and that he will provide every step of the way.

  483. Genesis 22 is this radical form of obedience,

  484. even though I believe there would have been a lot of internal wrestling.

  485. But you can't just look at Genesis 22 and go,

  486. okay, that's pretty crazy.

  487. So basically, whatever God says we should do,

  488. you have to take it in the context of all of Abraham's life.

  489. That actually, only a few chapters ago,

  490. he was bargaining and negotiating with God.

  491. Right?

  492. And so you're in this place now where he has become so trusting of God.

  493. Say, okay, God, I have learned my lesson.

  494. I know that you can be trusted.

  495. I'm going to follow you.

  496. I know you're going to figure it out some way.

  497. And I wonder whether we need to do that with our own lives.

  498. Whether it's in a relationship that we have been entrusted with,

  499. whether it's been someone that he's gifted us with,

  500. or whether it's the job that he's given to us,

  501. or whether it's just simply our future.

  502. Whatever it is that God has given us,

  503. do we entrust it back to him?

  504. Or do we hold on to it and say,

  505. well, now you've given it to us.

  506. Now you've given it to me.

  507. I can't let it go because I don't know why.

  508. Because ultimately, if you keep peeling back

  509. and you keep asking why, there's only one answer.

  510. It's because I don't trust you, God.

  511. I know you're good enough to give it to me now,

  512. but actually, I don't truly, truly trust you,

  513. is what we're saying.

  514. If we go all the way back to Genesis,

  515. at the beginning of Genesis, the fall,

  516. we see that's what it is.

  517. Did God really tell you to do that?

  518. It all comes down to a mistrust of God.

  519. This whole test here is just testing to see

  520. whether Abraham truly, truly trusts God

  521. and cherishes him,

  522. not just for the gifts that he gives him,

  523. but for the actual presence of God himself.

  524. So that's God.

  525. And that's Abraham.

  526. He passes the test.

  527. But I want to spare a little thought for Isaac.

  528. Isaac, who at this point,

  529. remember, he's actually not a baby,

  530. not a toddler.

  531. He's probably a little bit older than Reuben.

  532. And dad tells him,

  533. hey, look, we're going up to the mountain to worship,

  534. carry the wood.

  535. What we see here is actually a picture of a willing son,

  536. a trusting son,

  537. who actually knows that his father

  538. knows what's best for him

  539. and is willing to go.

  540. And you see there's actually a relationship here

  541. between the two.

  542. There's only a very short dialogue,

  543. but you see my father,

  544. hey, I can see all this stuff,

  545. but we're missing something.

  546. And then Abraham responds to him in kind.

  547. This tells me one thing,

  548. especially for his adults,

  549. especially for his parents.

  550. If we have kids who question the faith,

  551. who question anything,

  552. let them question,

  553. talk to them,

  554. discuss with them.

  555. Don't just say,

  556. hey,

  557. what I say is it.

  558. We're going up the hill.

  559. let's welcome questions.

  560. Let's welcome dialogue.

  561. Let's welcome relationship.

  562. The goal is for not just God to see how faithful Abraham is,

  563. but it's actually,

  564. you can actually,

  565. Isaac can see Abraham.

  566. One of the reasons we went into ministry

  567. is actually when Christina was pregnant with Reuben,

  568. one of the questions that was posed to us is,

  569. what do you want your son to learn from us?

  570. And there's many things,

  571. you know,

  572. how to be a good person,

  573. how to be kind,

  574. how to study hard,

  575. and all those kind of things.

  576. But the one thing that we kept saying to ourselves is,

  577. we want our children to know

  578. that God can be trusted.

  579. And so when God called us out of our jobs,

  580. I loved the school that I was teaching in.

  581. I thought I was going to stay there forever.

  582. And it was God's gift to me.

  583. But when we had Reuben,

  584. I was like,

  585. you know what?

  586. I don't even want to just teach my son

  587. that God gives us these good gifts

  588. and we should just do our best

  589. in whatever he gives us.

  590. I want to show him

  591. that actually God can be trusted.

  592. Because if we can trust God,

  593. we will reverse the curse of sin.

  594. God can be trusted.

  595. So imagine Isaac

  596. just following Abraham up,

  597. willingly being tied down,

  598. going,

  599. okay,

  600. God,

  601. Dad's got a plan.

  602. Dad's got a plan.

  603. Dad's got a plan.

  604. Can the plan show up anytime now,

  605. please?

  606. But what you do see here

  607. is a son looking up at a father,

  608. going,

  609. okay,

  610. the God that my father

  611. follows and worships

  612. is serious.

  613. I should trust him

  614. with everything.

  615. And so that's why you

  616. then hear about this God

  617. not just being the God of Abraham

  618. but also the God of Isaac.

  619. Abraham teaches Isaac

  620. a very important lesson here.

  621. And remember,

  622. in just the verses before,

  623. in verses,

  624. verse eight,

  625. oh,

  626. and verse six,

  627. they both say,

  628. so they went,

  629. both of them,

  630. together.

  631. This wasn't one person

  632. dragging the other person.

  633. This was a willing,

  634. this was a mutual willingness

  635. to trust in God

  636. as they went up this mountain together.

  637. And so you see that

  638. happening here.

  639. And of course,

  640. we all now know

  641. as we look at this text,

  642. even though we aren't

  643. quite going through

  644. the internal turmoil

  645. of what Abraham was going through

  646. because we look now

  647. and then it doesn't happen.

  648. But now we look,

  649. we see something more

  650. because we don't just see

  651. the Old Testament,

  652. we see the New Testament.

  653. We see that what Isaac is,

  654. what Isaac truly was,

  655. is a foreshadowing

  656. of the willing son,

  657. the Christ Jesus himself.

  658. He was a prefiguration

  659. of the son

  660. who willingly obeyed

  661. the father in the garden

  662. when he said,

  663. okay,

  664. not my will,

  665. but yours be done.

  666. Why?

  667. Because I trust you,

  668. father.

  669. And you see Isaac

  670. basically painting a picture

  671. going further

  672. and you're seeing Jesus

  673. doing the same thing.

  674. And that's what

  675. this whole passage

  676. about here

  677. is really trying

  678. to hammer home

  679. this idea of trusting

  680. in God.

  681. It's funny,

  682. God tells Abraham

  683. to go to the land of Moriah

  684. and go to the mountains there

  685. and that mountain

  686. ends up being

  687. where the temple

  688. gets built.

  689. So this mountain,

  690. this very mountain here

  691. where the Lord will provide

  692. is where the temple

  693. of Solomon gets built.

  694. Many, many years later

  695. just in the mountain

  696. just across the way,

  697. there is another son

  698. who climbs his mountain

  699. with wood on his back too.

  700. And of course,

  701. what we're talking about,

  702. who we're talking about

  703. is Jesus.

  704. And it is the same thing

  705. that I think he was wrestling.

  706. How does the command of God

  707. reconcile with the promise

  708. of God?

  709. How does a holy God

  710. also be a gracious God?

  711. Look,

  712. that sacrifice is needed.

  713. We know that sacrifice

  714. is needed

  715. because we are sinners

  716. and there is a debt

  717. to be paid.

  718. So we know that's the case

  719. because if it wasn't there,

  720. then he's not a holy God.

  721. And if he's not a holy God,

  722. then he's not just.

  723. And then everything in the world

  724. that we see right now,

  725. there's no hope

  726. for anything in the world

  727. if he's in the holy

  728. and just God.

  729. But there's also no hope

  730. in the world

  731. if he is not a gracious God

  732. because who of us here

  733. can say that we have not

  734. sin that we are perfect.

  735. So we are glad

  736. that he is holy and just

  737. when we look at the darkness

  738. in the world

  739. and we're also glad

  740. that he is gracious

  741. and forgiving

  742. when we look at the darkness

  743. inside us.

  744. And you see

  745. the questions

  746. of whether he is a holy God

  747. or whether he is a gracious God.

  748. You see the battling

  749. of whether the commands of God

  750. match up with the promise of God

  751. all in one place

  752. and that is the cross.

  753. And that is the cross

  754. where you see

  755. the justice of God,

  756. the wrath of God,

  757. waging war against evil,

  758. come hand in hand

  759. with the love

  760. and the grace

  761. and the forgiveness of God

  762. on the cross.

  763. And it's funny

  764. in the book of James

    James 2 chapter mention

  765. chapter 2

  766. it says this

  767. that Abraham trusted

  768. and believed God

  769. and then it was counted

  770. to him as righteousness.

  771. It wasn't

  772. Abraham obeyed God

  773. and climbed up a mountain

  774. for three days

  775. and did something crazy.

  776. It was that he just believed.

  777. And because he believed

  778. that's all that was required

  779. and it was counted to him

  780. as righteousness.

  781. You see it's easy

  782. to surrender to God

  783. when we know who God is.

  784. It's easy to surrender

  785. to a God

  786. who we truly believe

  787. will provide

  788. and will give us the way.

  789. And Romans 8

  790. it says this

  791. if you're wrestling with this

  792. he's like how

  793. he gave his only son

  794. for you

  795. how will he not graciously

  796. give you all things?

  797. How many of us struggle

  798. with trusting God

  799. with our jobs

  800. with our future

  801. with our relationships?

  802. We all struggle with this.

  803. I struggle with this.

  804. I find great comfort

  805. in the fact

  806. that Abraham

  807. also struggled

  808. with this.

  809. Final thing

  810. and then I'm actually

  811. going to bring up

  812. my good friend Jay

  813. to have a little conversation.

  814. Just imagine

  815. for a second

  816. if Abraham

  817. and Isaac

  818. were actually

  819. at the

  820. Mount of Calvary

  821. when they see

  822. Jesus

  823. on the cross

  824. when they see

  825. God's only son

  826. the son

  827. whom he loves

  828. on the cross.

  829. Imagine

  830. just for a second

  831. if Abraham

  832. and Isaac

  833. found a time machine

  834. and they ended up there

  835. and what they would have seen

  836. they're like

  837. oh

  838. this all makes sense.

  839. Now I know.

  840. Now I know.

  841. Because he

  842. who does not spare

  843. his only son

  844. whom he loves

  845. now I know

  846. that God loves me.

  847. He would have been

  848. shouting around

  849. to everyone going

  850. I was here

  851. well I was nearby

  852. on a mountain

  853. many years ago

  854. but now I know

  855. what it was all about.

  856. That there is a God

  857. there is a father

  858. in heaven

  859. who loves us so much

  860. who is so holy

  861. and who is so just

  862. and who is so compassionate

  863. that he would find

  864. he would launch

  865. a rescue plan

  866. to save us

  867. and that plan

  868. would involve

  869. his son dying

  870. on a cross for us.

  871. Guys look

  872. that is the land

  873. that was slain.

  874. Can you imagine

  875. Isaac

  876. going

  877. that could have been me

  878. but it wasn't.

  879. Oh man.

  880. I think as those

  881. of us who follow Christ

  882. we need to

  883. encounter that truth

  884. again and again.

  885. To know how deep

  886. the father's love for us

  887. that he would give

  888. his only son

  889. and because of that

  890. we are now called

  891. children of God.

  892. So here's my question

  893. and it's probably

  894. one that you would have

  895. thought as you were

  896. just looking through

  897. this passage

  898. is what's your Isaac?

  899. What's the gift

  900. that God has given you

  901. that you're so grateful for

  902. but now you're

  903. holding on to

  904. and you don't want

  905. to give back to him?

  906. This happens all the time

  907. with Micah

  908. doesn't it Reuben?

  909. We give him a toy

  910. and then he doesn't

  911. let us have it back

  912. and he's no

  913. mine.

  914. How many of us

  915. have that in our lives?

  916. How many of us

  917. have that Isaac

  918. in our lives?

  919. And what if God

  920. was just saying

  921. hey

  922. I gave you

  923. this

  924. and the whole point

  925. of this

  926. the whole point

  927. of this test

  928. is that you would

  929. trust me again

  930. and that you would

  931. respond to my call

  932. again

  933. and just in case

  934. you thought

  935. that responding

  936. to God's call

  937. once is enough

  938. Abraham tells us

  939. it is not enough

  940. it happened in

  941. Genesis 12

  942. it happened in

  943. Genesis 17

  944. 18

  945. 20

  946. 22

  947. to be a follower

  948. of Christ

  949. is not just about

  950. modifying our behavior

  951. once

  952. it's about a

  953. constant decision

  954. to say God

  955. you call

  956. I go

  957. you invite me

  958. I follow

  959. what is our Isaac?

  960. And so something

  961. that I've been wanting

  962. to try

  963. because I know

  964. that if I keep

  965. speaking every week

  966. for a long time

  967. you'll all get sick

  968. of me

  969. is actually

  970. there's lots of people

  971. in our congregation

  972. who actually have

  973. really so much to say

  974. so much to bless

  975. all of us

  976. and what we're going

  977. to hopefully

  978. try and do more of

  979. is actually

  980. to get some people

  981. up to

  982. share their thoughts

  983. so what I will do

  984. is the week before

  985. I'll actually give

  986. them a passage

  987. the passage

  988. that I'm going

  989. to be preaching on

  990. and ask them

  991. to meditate over it

  992. ask them to study over it

  993. and then of course

  994. to listen to the message

  995. as well

  996. and then to

  997. kind of give us

  998. a response

  999. in real time

  1000. and maybe just

  1001. to represent

  1002. all of us here

  1003. is actually

  1004. what does

  1005. the word of God

  1006. have for us?

  1007. What is God

  1008. actually trying to say

  1009. to us

  1010. and what can we

  1011. put into action here?

  1012. And so I'd love

  1013. to invite Jay

  1014. up here

1015. and can we give him

  1016. a round of applause?

  1017. So I gave Jay

  1018. this passage

  1019. to kind of

  1020. just reflect on

  1021. and we've been

  1022. talking about

  1023. ways for him

  1024. to kind of

  1025. just serve more

  1026. and he actually

  1027. feels a conviction

  1028. that one of these

  1029. is to actually

  1030. be able to

  1031. share his testimony

  1032. and also just

  1033. to be willing

  1034. to grow in teaching

  1035. the word of God

  1036. so actually

1037. I gave him this passage

  1038. and then he actually

  1039. sent me

  1040. I actually got

  1041. a little bit excited

  1042. because I was like

  1043. oh this is like

  1044. a whole sermon's worth

  1045. I can actually

  1046. have the week off

  1047. and I realized

  1048. if I did that

  1049. he'll never

  1050. come back again

  1051. so we're gonna

  1052. so Jay

  1053. before I jump

  1054. into the questions

  1055. can you just

  1056. briefly tell us

  1057. what you do

  1058. and just

  1059. about yourself

  1060. my name is Jay

  1061. and I am currently

  1062. working at Bloomberg

  1063. I'm Korean

  1064. I don't know

  1065. what else to share

  1066. yeah

  1067. you're Korean

  1068. and working at Bloomberg

  1069. that is a very

  1070. Korean way

  1071. of describing yourself

  1072. so

  1073. what made you

  1074. want to

  1075. kind of just

1076. get up and do this

  1077. God spoke to me

  1078. three years ago

1079. when I was in the military

  1080. and

  1081. he spoke actually

  1082. really clearly to me

  1083. and

  1084. he said

  1085. I've given you a gift

1086. and you must use it

  1087. and that's to teach

  1088. so

  1089. I've had

  1090. my own journey

  1091. of trying to obey

  1092. this command

  1093. and trusting God

  1094. when he's calling me

  1095. to do this

1096. it made me a little bit

  1097. scared initially

  1098. and

  1099. I think now

  1100. I'm sitting up here

  1101. and

  1102. I don't feel the nerves

  1103. that I used to

  1104. and

  1105. it's such a

  1106. I mean

  1107. Emily knows how nervous

  1108. I used to get

1109. and now I'm up here

  1110. and

  1111. it's just

  1112. sorry

1113. I just want to testify

  1114. it's just

  1115. I'm so

  1116. I'm so grateful

1117. that God's changed my heart

  1118. that

1119. I just want to glorify him

  1120. like this

1121. I'm here to glorify him

  1122. I just want to

  1123. share how

  1124. God has been working

  1125. in my life

  1126. and

1127. it's tiring to hear you

  1128. all the time

  1129. you know

  1130. it is

  1131. I first met Jay

  1132. when

  1133. actually it was our

  1134. very first weekend

  1135. here in Hong Kong

  1136. seven years ago

  1137. and he was still

1138. how old were you then?

  1139. 19

  1140. 19

  1141. 18

  1142. 19

1143. he was part of the

  1144. Young Life University

  1145. ministries as well

  1146. and that's how

1147. they kind of got connected

  1148. and since then

  1149. I've just watched him

  1150. grow and grow

  1151. both in stature

  1152. both in kind of

  1153. build

  1154. and also in hair

  1155. and every time

1156. every time I look at him

  1157. there's just a little bit

  1158. of disdain in me

  1159. it's just

  1160. it's just

  1161. it's just such a waste

  1162. it's just kind of

  1163. it's just

1164. and the most annoying thing is

  1165. he'll go to military

1166. he'll shave it all off

1167. and then just two months later

  1168. it's all back again

  1169. but anyway

1170. thank you for so much

  1171. for doing this

  1172. and I hope

1173. we'll be able to do this more

  1174. and so

  1175. the first question

  1176. I have for you

1177. and we only have two

1178. just in case you're tracking

  1179. is just

1180. as you read the passage

  1181. of Genesis 22

1182. what stood out to you

  1183. the most?

  1184. Before I do that

1185. can I just quickly pray

  1186. if it's okay?

  1187. Holy Spirit

  1188. this is your stage

1189. and I just want to speak

1190. what you want to speak

  1191. through me

  1192. I just sense that

  1193. there's a lot of open hearts

  1194. here today Lord

1195. so I just pray God

1196. that you soften their hearts

  1197. even more

1198. in the next 10 minutes God

  1199. whatever it is

1200. that you want to speak

  1201. through me

  1202. I just pray I can obey

1203. I can abide in you God

1204. and I know that you will speak

  1205. because you're faithful

1206. and I can trust you

1207. and we can trust you

1208. so Father I just pray

  1209. for fertile soul

  1210. as you speak now

1211. in the name of prayer

  1212. Amen

  1213. to answer the question

  1214. well firstly

1215. thanks for having me James

  1216. I've been thinking about

  1217. this passage

1218. for the past two weeks

  1219. it's a passage that's

  1220. confused me

  1221. it's been

  1222. a passage that's been

  1223. it's challenged me a lot

  1224. over the years

  1225. and two weeks ago

  1226. like you know

  1227. when we were doing

  1228. chapter 20

  1229. I was like

  1230. oh okay

1231. I need to speak on chapter 22

1232. as I was reading ahead

  1233. the main thing

1234. that stood out to me was

  1235. I mean James

1236. you talked a lot about

  1237. what it looks like

  1238. to trust in God

  1239. and how Abraham

  1240. trusted in God

1241. and I think the question

1242. that popped up for me

  1243. was like

1244. how do we trust God more

  1245. because it's something

  1246. that's said a lot in church

  1247. right

  1248. we just trust God

  1249. and when you read

  1250. Genesis 22

  1251. like let's say

  1252. you didn't know anything

  1253. about Abraham

1254. and you read Genesis 22

  1255. this passage makes

  1256. Abraham seem like

  1257. he's this really obedient

  1258. he doesn't challenge God

  1259. he's super

  1260. like he's really

1261. he really trusts the Lord

  1262. but if you

1263. if you see the context

  1264. of his life

  1265. everything that's led up

  1266. to this point

  1267. Abraham

1268. was not a very good dude

  1269. he really wasn't

  1270. like you know

  1271. he lied

  1272. he was

  1273. he's not a very honest dude

  1274. he didn't trust God

  1275. at many turns

  1276. he took matters

  1277. into his own hands

  1278. many times

  1279. but

  1280. we read today's passage

  1281. and

  1282. for the person

  1283. who doesn't know

  1284. or doesn't have context

  1285. to Abraham's life

  1286. it's like

1287. oh this guy is like

  1288. he's the goat

  1289. like I don't think

  1290. I can ever

  1291. be as trustworthy

  1292. as Abraham was

  1293. I'm nowhere near

  1294. close to that level

  1295. of faith

  1296. right

1297. but then we have to

  1298. I think for me

  1299. what's so encouraging

  1300. firstly

  1301. is just understanding

  1302. the context

  1303. of Abraham's life

1304. this dude was messed up

1305. he did not trust God

  1306. he's called the father

  1307. of faith

  1308. in the New Testament

  1309. but if you read

  1310. all the context

  1311. all the chapters

  1312. prior to today

  1313. oh man

  1314. he was a mess

  1315. right

  1316. and James talks about

  1317. how our faith

  1318. is like cycles

  1319. right

  1320. like it's not just

  1321. this linear growth

1322. it's we go through cycles

1323. and I think that was

  1324. the first thing

1325. that really stood out to me

  1326. so

1327. as I was thinking about

  1328. okay

  1329. how did Abraham

  1330. actually

  1331. what was different

  1332. for him this time

  1333. right

1334. that was the main question

  1335. like why this time

  1336. after all the time

  1337. prior

  1338. he just challenged God

1339. he was quarreling with God

  1340. he lied to God

1341. what was different this time

1342. what switched on for him

  1343. where he was like

  1344. okay

1345. I can actually trust God

  1346. this time

  1347. and

1348. I think my main takeaway

  1349. if I could summarize

  1350. my main takeaway

  1351. into one sentence

  1352. it's this

  1353. we can only begin

  1354. to truly trust God

  1355. when we see that

  1356. he's truly trustworthy

  1357. it's about God's faithfulness

1358. when we read the passage

  1359. I think it's so

  1360. focused on Abraham

  1361. Abraham's faith

  1362. like wow

1363. Abraham you did such a good job

  1364. but

  1365. actually the only reason

1366. he was able to do

  1367. that good job

  1368. is because he finally

  1369. understood

  1370. experienced personally

  1371. in his heart

  1372. God's faithfulness

  1373. in his life

  1374. and it's what James

  1375. said earlier right

  1376. only when we can

  1377. actually see that

  1378. he's trustworthy

  1379. when we understand

  1380. that God is trustworthy

  1381. then our actions

  1382. will follow

  1383. and I think that's the thing

1384. that really stood out to me

  1385. it's not trying to

  1386. muster up the courage

  1387. to say okay God

1388. I'm just gonna trust you

  1389. in this

  1390. it's

  1391. that's not what God's

  1392. asking of us right

1393. Abraham saw who God was

  1394. he understood

  1395. that God was faithful

  1396. to him

  1397. think about it right

  1398. like

  1399. it sounds like

  1400. Abraham's faith

  1401. but it's actually

  1402. a passage on

  1403. God's faith

  1404. in Abraham's life

  1405. because Abraham

  1406. did not hold

1407. his end of the deal

  1408. so many times

  1409. right

  1410. but yet

  1411. God still took him

  1412. to that mountain

  1413. and he reestablishes

  1414. that covenant

  1415. with him

  1416. it's actually a story

  1417. about God's faithfulness

  1418. to Abraham

  1419. and I think

  1420. when we start

  1421. taking the focus

  1422. off of ourselves

1423. and what we can do

1424. to bring to the table

  1425. to become a better

  1426. Christian

  1427. whatever

  1428. what not

  1429. and we see

  1430. actually God

  1431. is trustworthy

  1432. I think

  1433. that's when

  1434. our hearts

  1435. begin to change

1436. and just one last thing

  1437. I think

  1438. the thing

  1439. that really resonated

  1440. with me as well

  1441. was how it took

  1442. Abraham so much time

1443. to get to this point

  1444. I think when we

  1445. again

1446. when we read this passage

  1447. it just seems like

  1448. oh wow

  1449. he's the goat

  1450. he's like so trustworthy

  1451. but it took time

  1452. it took mistakes

  1453. and I think

  1454. as readers

  1455. of this passage

1456. I think what we can

  1457. take away from it

  1458. is understanding

  1459. you know what

1460. in this journey of faith

  1461. as I grow closer

  1462. to Christ

  1463. I will make mistakes

1464. and I will fall short

  1465. but God is gracious

  1466. and when I do

  1467. he'll re-invite me

  1468. with open arms

  1469. and I think

  1470. that's the thing

  1471. that has to

1472. root us back to him

1473. keep us back to him

  1474. it's about God

  1475. taking the focus

  1476. off of ourselves

  1477. and looking to the

  1478. faithful God

  1479. I think is what

  1480. I took away from

  1481. the passage today

  1482. and you

  1483. this incoming curveball

  1484. you and I both

1485. have the idol of control

  1486. we've talked about this

  1487. a lot

  1488. and often that leads

1489. to just lots of anxiety

1490. and a lot of stress

  1491. and worry

  1492. that our wives

  1493. can attest to

  1494. as well

  1495. so when you're saying

  1496. okay well

  1497. the answer then is

1498. that we just have to

  1499. look at the

  1500. trustworthiness of God

  1501. practically speaking

1502. what does that look like

1503. how do you do that

  1504. how do you remind

  1505. yourself of that

  1506. I guess I could just

  1507. share the testimony

1508. I think trusting the Lord

  1509. is when we look

1510. when I read the Bible

  1511. it just sounds like

  1512. you make one decision

  1513. once at one point

  1514. in your life

1515. okay I trust the Lord

  1516. and you're set

1517. but it's never like that

  1518. right

  1519. it's a daily decision

  1520. actually

  1521. it takes time

1522. and I think for me

  1523. in the context of

  1524. idols

  1525. and my Isaac

  1526. in my life

  1527. it's control

  1528. and sometimes

  1529. that control

  1530. manifests itself

  1531. in very different

  1532. areas of my life

  1533. but control in the

  1534. context of my career

  1535. I think

  1536. for me

  1537. I'm an Asian kid

  1538. right

  1539. my parents had

  1540. high expectations

  1541. for me

  1542. and you know

  1543. doctor, lawyer

  1544. whatever

  1545. whatever

  1546. yeah you know

  1547. that was the

  1548. expectation of me

  1549. and I did it

  1550. and that's

1551. kind of where I am now

  1552. and

1553. for a very long time

  1554. now

  1555. since I was

  1556. I don't know

1557. as long as I can remember

  1558. I knew that God

  1559. was calling me

  1560. into a different

  1561. career path

  1562. he was calling me

  1563. I think

  1564. to become a counselor

  1565. and I resisted that

1566. for a very long time

  1567. I'll just explain why

  1568. I'm sharing this testimony

  1569. in a second

  1570. and how it relates

  1571. to trust

  1572. but

1573. I resisted for a very long time

  1574. couple of reasons

  1575. number one

  1576. again

  1577. I didn't want to

  1578. I didn't want to

  1579. disappoint my parents

1580. that was a big one

  1581. and

  1582. I think

1583. the career that I'm in now

  1584. I'm comfortable

  1585. it means

  1586. I can control

1587. the variables in my life

  1588. it means that

  1589. I can eliminate

  1590. a lot of

  1591. uncertainty

  1592. from my life

  1593. and that's really

  1594. important for me

1595. so when God gave me

  1596. the call

  1597. hey become a counselor

  1598. in my head

  1599. I was thinking

  1600. oh my goodness

  1601. like

  1602. that doesn't sound

1603. like a very stable job

  1604. that sounds like

  1605. really difficult work

  1606. I mean

  1607. the list goes on

  1608. right

  1609. there's just so many

  1610. different things to fear

  1611. and

  1612. so I resisted

1613. for a very long time

  1614. and then I applied

  1615. to Bloomberg

1616. and I got to Bloomberg

  1617. and now I'm working

  1618. finance

  1619. it's been three years

  1620. and

1621. the start of the year

  1622. I was sharing

1623. with one of my mentors

  1624. that I was really

  1625. struggling with this

  1626. I said to him

  1627. I think the Lord's

  1628. calling me

  1629. but

  1630. I don't know

  1631. how to obey

  1632. and

  1633. he just asked me

  1634. this question

  1635. that just

  1636. straight to the heart

  1637. he's very direct

  1638. he said

  1639. Jay

  1640. why don't you

  1641. trust God

  1642. and I was like

  1643. what

  1644. what do you mean

  1645. I do

  1646. that's really rude

  1647. and he was like

  1648. no Jay

  1649. you don't trust God

  1650. and

1651. as I sat with it

  1652. I realized

  1653. in my head

  1654. I was saying

  1655. Lord I trust you

  1656. and I come here

  1657. to Sunday service

  1658. and I say

  1659. I worship you

  1660. I surrender

  1661. whatever

  1662. I'm saying

  1663. with my lips

  1664. but

  1665. my heart

  1666. didn't show it

  1667. my actions

  1668. didn't show it

1669. so when he asked me

  1670. that question

  1671. I didn't have an answer

  1672. and he started praying

  1673. for me

  1674. and then

  1675. as he started

  1676. praying for me

  1677. I got this picture

  1678. as a young boy

1679. just a bit of context

  1680. when I was a kid

  1681. I

  1682. I guess

  1683. I didn't have

  1684. a really good time

  1685. in school

  1686. I was bullied

  1687. and my first

  1688. so there's

  1689. there's this one

  1690. particular memory

  1691. that as he was

  1692. praying for me

  1693. I just replayed

  1694. in my head

  1695. and I realized

  1696. it was like

  1697. kind of like

  1698. a traumatic memory

1699. for me as a kid

  1700. and it affected

  1701. the way that I

  1702. trusted God

  1703. but the story goes

1704. it was my first day

  1705. of school

  1706. and after the teacher

  1707. introduced me

  1708. she left

  1709. and this Korean girl

  1710. stood up

  1711. and she was like

  1712. that's kimchi boy

  1713. he's smelly

  1714. he's a loser

  1715. no one hang out

  1716. with him

  1717. and from that point

  1718. on

  1719. just as a kid

  1720. that's like

  1721. the worst thing

  1722. that can happen

  1723. to you right

  1724. and I remember

  1725. that

  1726. that day

  1727. like the first recess

  1728. I went down

  1729. and I was making

1730. my rounds with the kids

  1731. like some kids

  1732. were playing wall ball

1733. some kids were playing catch

  1734. and I was like

1735. hey can I play with you

  1736. like you know

  1737. my high squeaky voice

  1738. and they're like

1739. oh no you're kimchi boy

  1740. you're a loser

  1741. you suck

  1742. like no one wants

  1743. to be with you

1744. and I made my rounds

  1745. across the entire

  1746. playground

  1747. right

  1748. and every single

1749. kid said no to me

  1750. and

  1751. the memory of me

  1752. was

1753. I went to the corner

  1754. of the playground

  1755. and I was

  1756. I was weeping

  1757. I was sobbing

  1758. just this little j

  1759. you know

  1760. and

  1761. in that

  1762. in that moment

  1763. I asked

  1764. I asked Jesus

  1765. I asked Jesus

  1766. where were you

  1767. in that moment

  1768. why didn't you

  1769. protect me

  1770. and

  1771. I realized

  1772. that this was

1773. kind of a core memory

  1774. that has been

  1775. holding me back

  1776. now even as adults

  1777. from trusting God

  1778. because that really

  1779. solidified in my head

  1780. and I realized

1781. it was kind of like

  1782. enemy had its root

  1783. in my heart

  1784. God is not

  1785. worthy of trusting

  1786. he didn't protect you

  1787. then

  1788. he won't protect you

  1789. now

  1790. and that lie

  1791. was so embedded

  1792. in my heart

  1793. I didn't realize

1794. it had such a strong

  1795. grip on me

  1796. and the coolest thing

  1797. was when I asked

  1798. Jesus

  1799. where were you

  1800. he walks out

  1801. from one of the

  1802. classrooms

  1803. and he sits next

  1804. to me like this

  1805. and he puts his

  1806. arm around me

  1807. and he says

  1808. son I'll take care

  1809. of you

  1810. and I'll take care

  1811. of your family too

  1812. and the second part

  1813. really got me

  1814. because I think

  1815. making this

  1816. making this transition

  1817. has been

  1818. I'm starting

  1819. a new family

  1820. with Emily

  1821. and as a husband

  1822. and hopefully

  1823. in the future

  1824. as a father

  1825. there are certain

  1826. things that

  1827. we have responsibilities

  1828. and I was scared

  1829. that I wouldn't be able

  1830. to meet those

  1831. responsibilities

  1832. for my family

  1833. so when God

  1834. said to me

  1835. I'll take care

  1836. of your family

  1837. I realized that

  1838. God knows me

  1839. so intimately

  1840. he saw straight

  1841. into my heart

  1842. he knew exactly

  1843. what I needed

  1844. he knew exactly

  1845. what I needed

  1846. to hear

  1847. and so I went

  1848. home that night

  1849. and I went

  1850. to Emily

  1851. and I said

  1852. and God has

  1853. called me

  1854. and I must obey

  1855. there is no

  1856. other option

  1857. and I think

  1858. the reason why

  1859. that the lights

  1860. came on for me

  1861. was when I realized

  1862. God's going to

  1863. take care of me

  1864. I have these fears

  1865. it's the same thing

  1866. as Abraham right

1867. he had all these fears

1868. he had all these doubts

  1869. but I finally

  1870. understood in my heart

  1871. okay he's going

1872. to take care of me

  1873. so regardless

  1874. of what comes

  1875. I can trust him

  1876. and I can take

  1877. that leap of faith

  1878. and I think that's

  1879. what kind of switched

  1880. on for me

  1881. and that's why

1882. when I read this passage

  1883. it really hits home

  1884. for me because

  1885. I've made my mistakes

  1886. I have disobeyed God

  1887. for over 10 years

  1888. and I'm finally

  1889. making the move

  1890. to do it

  1891. it took time

1892. and it took a lot

  1893. of mistakes

  1894. and I will make

  1895. a lot of mistakes

  1896. there's still moments

  1897. where I have to

  1898. re-evaluate

  1899. and re-trust God

  1900. because there are moments

  1901. where I'm like

  1902. oh my goodness

  1903. what am I doing

1904. this is a stupid decision

  1905. like I should not

  1906. be doing this

  1907. and the call again

  1908. is remembering

  1909. Jesus who said

1910. I'll take care of you

  1911. and I'll take care

  1912. of your family too

  1913. and just lastly

  1914. James

  1915. conscious of time

  1916. Davina

  1917. you asked me

  1918. a question yesterday

  1919. in Alpha

  1920. you asked me

1921. I want to trust God

  1922. but sometimes

  1923. I don't feel it

  1924. oh I resonate

  1925. with that so much

  1926. sometimes this memory

  1927. of I'll take care

  1928. of you son

1929. doesn't do it for me

  1930. sometimes I still spiral

  1931. so the real

  1932. the real direction

  1933. I start fixing

  1934. my gaze towards

  1935. is the cross

1936. and I think the cross

  1937. is the only place

  1938. where we can

  1939. kind of

  1940. recalibrate

  1941. ourselves

1942. what I mean by that

  1943. is

  1944. if we look at

1945. the truth of the gospel

  1946. it's

  1947. God

  1948. coming to us

  1949. and it's about

  1950. God's faithfulness

  1951. to us

  1952. and when I feel

1953. the fear in my heart

1954. and it grips me again

  1955. I remember

  1956. that Jesus had

  1957. all the power

  1958. all the authority

  1959. it says

  1960. in the gospels

  1961. that Jesus had

  1962. the authority

  1963. to bring legions

  1964. of angels

  1965. to kill everyone

  1966. in front of him

1967. in front of the cross

  1968. but he didn't

  1969. isn't that so

  1970. curious

  1971. why didn't he

  1972. he had

  1973. every authority

  1974. to do so

  1975. but he didn't

  1976. why

  1977. because of you

  1978. because of me

  1979. that's the only reason

  1980. and

1981. when I look to the cross

  1982. I think

  1983. it moves me

  1984. because

  1985. I know that

  1986. if Jesus

  1987. chose to stay

  1988. on the cross

  1989. it wasn't like

  1990. the soldiers

  1991. had too much power

  1992. over him

  1993. and he couldn't

  1994. leave

  1995. he had every right

  1996. he had every power

  1997. to do so

1998. but he chose not to

  1999. for you

  2000. and I think

  2001. I come back

  2002. to that a lot

  2003. and

  2004. sorry James

  2005. one final thing

  2006. this is really final

  2007. keep thanking me

2008. I think one final thing

  2009. is

  2010. I think I struggle

  2011. with trusting God

  2012. and what that means

  2013. often

  2014. I'm sharing this

2015. as if I've got it

  2016. all figured out

  2017. I really don't

  2018. I really

  2019. really don't

  2020. the thing

  2021. that encourages me

  2022. a lot

  2023. when I struggle

  2024. is

  2025. I realize that

  2026. I'm not actually

  2027. supposed to do this

  2028. by myself

  2029. this journey

  2030. of trusting God

  2031. I think that's why

  2032. Jesus gave us

  2033. the Holy Spirit

  2034. right

  2035. we're not supposed

  2036. to do it ourselves

  2037. and the passage

  2038. that encourages me

  2039. so much

  2040. is in Luke 11

  2041. I'll just read it

  2042. real quick

  2043. it's in Luke 11

    Luke 11:11

  2044. verse 11

  2045. it says

  2046. what father among you

  2047. if his son

  2048. asks for a fish

2049. will instead of a fish

  2050. give him a serpent

2051. or if he asks for an egg

2052. will give you a scorpion

  2053. if you then

  2054. who are evil

  2055. know how to give

  2056. good gifts

  2057. to your children

  2058. how much more

  2059. will the heavenly father

  2060. give the Holy Spirit

2061. to those who ask him

  2062. how much more

  2063. will the heavenly father

  2064. give the Holy Spirit

2065. to those who ask him

2066. you can ask him anytime

  2067. the Holy Spirit

  2068. is there

  2069. he's knocking

  2070. I sense that

  2071. there's a lot of people

  2072. in this room

  2073. who are probably

  2074. struggling with

  2075. trusting God

  2076. right now

  2077. the good news is

  2078. you don't have to

  2079. do it alone

  2080. the good news is

  2081. there's a heavenly father

2082. who wants to give you

  2083. the Holy Spirit

  2084. there's a heavenly father

2085. who wants to help you

  2086. so

  2087. I just

  2088. can I pray

  2089. actually

2090. or do you want to

  2091. okay

2092. can I just pray for you

  2093. it's a prayer

  2094. that I pray

  2095. when I feel

  2096. that I don't have

  2097. the strength anymore

  2098. to trust in him

2099. Jesus we look to you

  2100. the only reason

2101. why we can trust you

  2102. is because you have

  2103. proved yourself

  2104. to be trustworthy

  2105. Father we confess

  2106. that

  2107. we like Abraham

  2108. have failed so many

  2109. times in our lives

  2110. the God that

  2111. loves us

  2112. the God that

  2113. looks at us

  2114. is the one

  2115. who has so much

  2116. grace

  2117. who's willing to

  2118. give us a second

  2119. chance

  2120. a third chance

  2121. a fourth chance

  2122. a fifth chance

  2123. because that's who

  2124. you are

  2125. you're trustworthy

  2126. so Holy Spirit

  2127. Holy Spirit

  2128. I ask

  2129. can you just

  2130. enter the hearts

  2131. of those who are

  2132. willing to receive

  2133. you right now

  2134. if there's any

  2135. if there's anyone

  2136. here right now

  2137. who wants to receive

  2138. the Holy Spirit

2139. can I just invite you

2140. to just open your heart

2141. or even just open your

  2142. hands as a posture

  2143. to show him

  2144. Holy Spirit

  2145. I don't understand this

2146. but I want to receive

  2147. you in my life

  2148. I'm struggling

  2149. I feel like I know

2150. where I need to go

  2151. but I don't have

2152. the strength to do it

  2153. Holy Spirit

  2154. please

  2155. come

2156. will you enter my heart

2157. will you dwell in me

  2158. you promised that

2159. you would if I ask

2160. so can I just invite you

2161. to just ask the Holy Spirit

  2162. in your heart

2163. just echo in your heart

  2164. come Holy Spirit

  2165. come

  2166. we thank you Father

  2167. that you are faithful

  2168. you are faithful

  2169. to Abraham

  2170. you are faithful

  2171. to David

  2172. you are faithful

  2173. to Samson

  2174. you are faithful

  2175. to Mary

  2176. you are faithful

  2177. to so many people

2178. who have come before us

2179. and you will be faithful

  2180. to us

  2181. he will be faithful

  2182. to you

  2183. that is his promise

  2184. so whatever you're

  2185. struggling with

  2186. remember

  2187. he is worthy

2188. of all of your trust

2189. if he didn't leave you

  2190. at Calvary

2191. he won't leave you now

  2192. yes

  2193. so Father

  2194. we come

  2195. to you

  2196. would you give us

  2197. clean hands

  2198. and a pure heart

  2199. we surrender

  2200. to a loving

  2201. providing

  2202. faithful God

  2203. we finish with

  2204. a response

  2205. through song

  2206. but also

  2207. if you feel

2208. as though you need prayer

2209. we'll be at the front

  2210. and don't hesitate

  2211. to come over

  2212. and ask for prayer

2213. and we can pray for you

  2214. may may

  2215. !
