  1. Thank you so much, Aaron.

  2. So good to see you all.

  3. Really blessed to be here.

  4. I heard there was a queue coming up.

  5. Was that right?

  6. Oh, yeah, that's bad.

  7. We'll try and talk to the management

  8. and see if we can get more lifts up.

  9. But you know when there isn't a queue?

  10. Nine o'clock.

  11. No queue then.

  12. Ten o'clock.

  13. No queue.

  14. 10.30 for the pre-service prayer.

  15. Guess what?

  16. No queue.

  17. So if you want to have no queue,

  18. that's when you come.

  19. But honestly, we're trying to figure things out.

  20. It's a special...

  21. It's been actually an exciting

  22. but also a reflective week for me

  23. because this is the three-year anniversary

  24. of us being in the Admiralty Center.

  25. Three years.

  26. We've been doing this for three years

  27. and it feels as though every few months

  28. we have to do some kind of changes.

  29. We have to install some kind of fans

  30. because people are fainting.

  31. We have to add more chairs.

  32. We have to change into a different floor.

  33. And we are still figuring it out.

  34. And what I do really cherish

  35. is that we have a community

  36. that is willing to have grace

  37. and figure it out together.

  38. Yesterday we had a group of leaders again

  39. just going,

  40. what do we do?

  41. How are we going to go about this?

  42. And where's God leading us?

  43. And just constantly trying to communicate

  44. and just ask,

  45. Lord, what is it that you want from us?

  46. And what is it that you desire for us

  47. as a church?

  48. And so we're actually going to take

  49. a bit of a break from Genesis.

  50. We've been going through the book of Genesis

  51. since Easter.

  52. So it's been quite a long time.

  53. We've gone all the way to Genesis 24

  54. and we're going to take one week intermission.

  55. And I realized it's because

  56. as I look around now,

  57. as I look and I see,

  58. I see familiar faces.

  59. I see new familiar faces

  60. and I see just completely new faces.

  61. And then I'm just like,

  62. well, every, again,

  63. every few months,

  64. I feel as though it's time to do

  65. just like a little pause

  66. so I can introduce who we are

  67. and also a bit of housekeeping

  68. and a constant reminder

  69. of why we do what we do.

  70. Those gathering statements,

  71. honestly, they're there for me.

  72. They're there for me

  73. because I'm coming every Sunday going,

  74. what am I doing here?

  75. Why is it that I'm here?

  76. And so actually those are

  77. almost my mission statements.

  78. I'm here because it's a complex time

  79. and I'm trying to live

  80. in the most simple way that I can.

  81. I'm trying to walk daily

  82. in the ways of Jesus.

  83. I'm trying to know him

  84. and I'm trying to enjoy him.

  85. That's what I'm trying to do

  86. every single day.

  87. And then I'm trying to gather

  88. with people who I perceive

  89. a spiritual family,

  90. people who I'm hoping to raise up,

  91. people who I'm hoping

  92. will raise up my sons and daughters.

  93. Daughter.

  94. Only one daughter.

  95. No more.

  96. We're done.

  97. Daughter.

  98. So that's it.

  99. Three.

  100. We're good.

  101. Lord have mercy.

  102. And then I'm also going,

  103. okay, how do we disciple leaders

  104. of the next generation?

  105. We started this

  106. when I was still part of Young Life,

  107. which is now headed up by Aaron.

  108. And there's quite a few of you here.

  109. How do we pour into the next generation?

  110. How do we continue to see people

  111. who are growing up,

  112. who are young,

  113. but are worshipping the Lord

  114. and who are choosing

  115. to follow the way of Jesus?

  116. And how do we reach those

  117. who are on the fringe,

  118. who actually,

  119. if we don't go out and reach them,

  120. they won't even come in.

  121. So we're trying to figure that out.

  122. Of course,

  123. logistically,

  124. that means then there's some issue

  125. as we try and bring more people in.

  126. Then we get more cramps.

  127. There's less oxygen to go around.

  128. And then we're trying

  129. to figure that out.

  130. So we are continually praying,

  131. Lord,

  132. what is it that you want us to do?

  133. And I realize a lot of this is on me.

  134. It's a humbling experience for me

  135. because these last three years

  136. have been the most enjoyable,

  137. most rewarding,

  138. but also the hardest

  139. because you're constantly

  140. having to make decisions

  141. that not everyone likes.

  142. And actually,

  143. more importantly,

  144. I realize for me,

  145. we as a church,

  146. we will only go as far

  147. as I go

  148. in terms of me being a leader.

  149. I think we look at the world right now

  150. and what do we see?

  151. We see a leadership problem.

  152. We see there are not enough

  153. godly leaders out there

  154. who would humble themselves

  155. and lead in a way

  156. that God actually desires.

  157. In fact,

  158. I personally think

  159. you can trace all of the world's problems

  160. back to a lack of good godly leadership.

  161. And that's humbling

  162. and terrifying for me as a leader.

  163. And actually,

  164. it's Alistair Begg who said this,

  165. that the church does not advance

  166. beyond the spiritual progress

  167. of its leader.

  168. They did a survey 80 years ago

  169. for the Anglican church in England

  170. and they were looking

  171. at all the different parishes around

  172. and seeing which of the churches

  173. and the communities that are thriving

  174. and which ones are not.

  175. And you know what they found?

  176. It all came down to

  177. whether there was a shepherd,

  178. there was a leader

  179. in that congregation.

  180. Oh, that's a humbling,

  181. terrifying experience

  182. for me to say the least.

  183. So I'm constantly asking myself,

  184. how am I with the Lord?

  185. Do I love the Lord?

  186. If I want you to love the Lord,

  187. then I need to be growing

  188. in the love of the Lord.

  189. If I want you to be reading

  190. and abiding in the word daily,

  191. then I need to be abiding

  192. in the word daily.

  193. I want you to be praying.

  194. I want you to be scattering.

  195. Guess what I need to be doing?

  196. Those very things.

  197. How do I walk and go from the front?

  198. And that's a tough thing.

  199. And I'm going to share with you

  200. from a passage today

  201. which I hold dearly to my heart.

  202. I think it makes it into my prayers

  203. on a weekly basis

  204. because I can't do without it.

  205. Because when we're talking about

  206. what it means to be a shepherd,

  207. Jesus talks directly about it.

  208. And actually in John 21,

  209. just before he leaves,

  210. he picks out one of his leaders

  211. who made tons of mistakes,

  212. a guy called Peter

  213. who denied him three times

  214. and by the fire,

  215. he goes to Peter in John 21,

  216. do you love me?

  217. And if you love me,

  218. you'll feed my sheep.

  219. For me, that's the constant question

  220. that I ask myself.

  221. Lord, do I love you?

  222. I should only feed your sheep.

  223. I should only pastor if I love you.

  224. And I can tell you this.

  225. It's an honest confession.

  226. You can go by in ministry

  227. not loving the Lord.

  228. You can completely ignore the Lord.

  229. But that's not my hope

  230. and that's not my prayer.

  231. And actually,

  232. that's my request for a prayer

  233. from you to us

  234. and to our leaders.

  235. Would you continue to pray

  236. for your leaders

  237. that they would continue

  238. to love the Lord,

  239. continue to know the Lord

  240. and continue to enjoy the Lord.

  241. And of course,

  242. after Peter says,

  243. yes, I do love you,

  244. I do love you,

  245. I do love you,

  246. unknowingly,

  247. knowing that actually

  248. Jesus was trying to restore him,

  249. restore him for those three times

  250. that he actually denied him,

  251. he ends up in a place

  252. where it's okay,

  253. you are now going to feed my sheep.

  254. Peter, many years later,

  255. writes a letter.

  256. He writes a letter

  257. and this is the passage

  258. that we're going to focus on today

  259. is 1 Peter 5, 1 to 11.

  260. And it's talking about

  261. how do we as shepherds

  262. actually shepherd the flock?

  263. And hopefully,

  264. with this intermission,

  265. with this bit of a breather

  266. from Genesis,

  267. which we'll be back in next week,

  268. Gabe is going to go

  269. into Genesis 25,

  270. but this week,

  271. we'll just have a breather

  272. and go, okay,

  273. what is the heart behind

  274. everything that we're doing in this?

  275. And what is my heart?

  276. And what is God's heart

  277. for our flock here?

  278. So as is our tradition,

  279. can I invite you to stand

  280. for the word of the Lord?

  281. Kelly is going to come up

  282. and read it to us

  283. and maybe I'll say a quick prayer

  284. before we do that.

  285. God,

  286. we stand for your word

  287. because we

  288. we don't only respect this,

  289. we revere your word.

  290. We depend on it.

  291. We are filled with awe

  292. that these words are from you,

  293. that you would speak to us

  294. in a way that we would understand.

  295. And Holy Spirit,

  296. there are times

  297. when we are hard of hearing,

  298. we don't understand.

  299. So Holy Spirit,

  300. would you guide us today?

  301. Would you speak to us today

  302. through your word?

  303. Minister to us, Lord.

  304. 1 Peter,

    1 Peter 5:1–11

  305. chapter 5,

  306. verse 1 to 11.

  307. Shepherd the flock of God.

  308. So I exhort the elders among you

  309. as a fellow elder

  310. and a witness

  311. of the sufferings of Christ,

  312. as well as a partaker

  313. in the glory

  314. that is going to be revealed.

  315. Shepherd the flock of God

  316. that is among you,

  317. exercising oversight,

  318. not under compulsion,

  319. but willingly,

  320. as God would have you,

  321. not for shameful gain,

  322. but eagerly,

  323. not domineering

  324. over those in your charge,

  325. but being examples

  326. to the flock.

  327. And when the chief shepherd appears,

  328. you will receive

  329. the unfading crown of glory.

  330. Likewise,

  331. you who are younger,

  332. be subject to the elders.

  333. Clothe yourselves,

  334. all of you,

  335. with humility

  336. toward one another,

  337. for God opposes the proud,

  338. but gives grace

  339. to the humble.

  340. Humble yourselves,

  341. therefore,

  342. under the mighty hand of God,

  343. so that at the proper time

  344. he may exalt you,

  345. casting all your anxieties on him,

  346. because he cares for you.

  347. Be sober-minded,

  348. be watchful.

  349. Your adversary,

  350. the devil,

  351. prowls around

  352. like a roaring lion,

  353. seeking someone to devour.

  354. Resist him,

  355. firm in your faith,

  356. knowing that the same kinds

  357. of suffering

  358. are being experienced

  359. by your brotherhood

  360. throughout the world.

  361. And after you have suffered

  362. a little while,

  363. the God of all grace,

  364. who has called you

  365. to his eternal glory in Christ,

  366. will himself restore,

  367. confirm,

  368. strengthen,

  369. and establish you.

  370. To him be the dominion

  371. forever and ever.

  372. Amen.

  373. This is the word of the Lord.

  374. Please take a seat.

  375. Thank you, Kelly.

  376. Just a bit of context here.

  377. He's writing to the church

  378. and he's writing this letter

  379. and actually,

  380. most of the letter,

  381. he's actually just talking

  382. about suffering.

  383. He's saying,

  384. when you become a Christian,

  385. it's not about health and wealth.

  386. It's not about how you

  387. then have your purpose

  388. that makes you feel

  389. completely satisfied

  390. and then you can walk around

  391. happy,

  392. singing in the rain.

  393. It's way more than that.

  394. In fact,

  395. there's going to be

  396. a lot of suffering

  397. that happens in your life.

  398. That's what he's talking about.

  399. And then in chapter 4,

  400. verse 17,

  401. he says,

  402. there will be judgment.

  403. There will be judgment

  404. and it will start first where?

  405. It will start first

  406. with the church.

  407. The church who has received

  408. the good news,

  409. who has been entrusted

  410. with this good news,

  411. who knows how to live,

  412. who at least knows

  413. how they should live,

  414. judgment is going to start

  415. with the church.

  416. And then he jumps into

  417. this leadership passage,

  418. which tells me that

  419. it not only starts

  420. with the church,

  421. it starts with the leaders

  422. of the church.

  423. And actually,

  424. for us as we're here,

  425. you might be sat here going,

  426. oof,

  427. thank goodness I don't have to

  428. be in the pulpit every week.

  429. Oof,

  430. thank goodness that I'm

  431. not an actual pastor

  432. and a leader.

  433. No, I'm talking about

  434. anyone who's a leader for me.

  435. I'm looking at this passage

  436. going,

  437. oh,

  438. this is what it means

  439. to be a leader.

  440. Of course,

  441. 1 Timothy 3 says,

  442. he who desires

  443. a leadership role

  444. to be an elder,

  445. that is a noble thing.

  446. So we should all

  447. continue to strive

  448. to be the leaders

  449. in our communities,

  450. in our families,

  451. in our workplaces,

  452. in our friendship groups.

  453. But right now,

  454. he's talking to these elders here

  455. and it's funny

  456. because he's talking to them

  457. as a fellow elder himself.

  458. So he's kind of going,

  459. say,

  460. hey,

  461. I'm the same as you.

  462. And then he starts

  463. on this passage.

  464. So he's talked about suffering.

  465. He's talked about judgment

  466. that will come

  467. and he says judgment

  468. will start from the church.

  469. So the church needs

  470. to not have any hypocrisy.

  471. Say what you believe,

  472. do what you believe

  473. and actually live it out

  474. so that the world can see.

  475. Sadly,

  476. that rarely happens

  477. sometimes, right,

  478. is what we feel.

  479. People outside keep saying,

  480. I don't go to church

  481. because of the hypocrites.

  482. And that's just

  483. the heartbreaking thing.

  484. And you look at this passage,

  485. you say,

  486. that's not what it's supposed

  487. to be.

  488. And so then he goes

  489. and he talks about the suffering

  490. and he says,

  491. so I exhort.

  492. That word is an old-fashioned word.

  493. Anyone use the word exhort recently

  494. in just conversations?

  495. Jojo has?

  496. Did you just put your hand up?

  497. Well, yesterday.

  498. Oh, nice.

  499. Between the two of you,

  500. look at that.

  501. We have some great leaders

  502. already in our church.

  503. The word exhort for me means,

  504. it was actually a word

  505. that was used by Greek warriors

  506. standing in front of the soldiers

  507. trying to exhort them.

  508. What were they trying to do?

  509. They were trying to pour courage

  510. into them.

  511. Encourage.

  512. Pour courage into them

  513. so that they could go into battle.

  514. They were trying to move their hearts.

  515. That's what I'm trying to do here.

  516. I'm trying to use this book,

  517. the word of God,

  518. which gives us life,

  519. and I'm trying to speak it

  520. into your heart

  521. so that your heart

  522. would be moved

  523. so that you would then

  524. have a desire

  525. to know him more,

  526. to enjoy him more.

  527. That's what I'm trying to do.

  528. So he's exhorting these elders

  529. and he's saying,

  530. hey, me,

  531. I'm a fellow elder as well.

  532. And guess what?

  533. Not only am I a fellow elder,

  534. I was a witness

  535. of the sufferings of Christ

  536. as well as a partaker

  537. of the glory

  538. that is going to be revealed.

  539. This is interesting.

  540. He's saying,

  541. if you're going to be a leader,

  542. if you're going to be an elder,

  543. you will have suffering

  544. and you will have glory.

  545. How many of us

  546. just want the glory?

  547. How many of us

  548. just want a thriving small group?

  549. Just want a thriving

  550. church community?

  551. Just want a thriving business?

  552. The Bible doesn't seem

  553. to talk just about glory.

  554. He's talking a lot

  555. about suffering as well.

  556. Romans 8 talks about this,

  557. that if we're going to

  558. be glorified with him,

  559. if we're going to be raised with him,

  560. we also must suffer with him.

  561. And so he's talking about

  562. suffering in the sense

  563. that it's not just about the hype.

  564. There is way more.

  565. And actually for Peter,

  566. he was a witness

  567. to the sufferings of Christ.

  568. Why?

  569. He was there.

  570. He was there when he was dragged

  571. from the garden

  572. to the cross.

  573. He was also there

  574. in Mark 9,

  575. Luke 9,

  576. at the Transvigoration,

  577. where he's up in the mountain

  578. and he sees Jesus

  579. just in all his glory.

  580. So much glory

  581. that he's like,

  582. Jesus,

  583. let's build three tents here

  584. and let's just stay here forever.

  585. We love the glory that is here.

  586. And what does Jesus say?

  587. He says,

  588. well, no,

  589. we're going back down.

  590. That passage is fascinating

  591. because as soon as they go

  592. back down the hill,

  593. where do they end up?

  594. Into chaos.

  595. There is demonic possession.

  596. There are seizures happening.

  597. And it makes you think,

  598. wow,

  599. they wanted to stay

  600. in the mountaintop,

  601. but they had to come back down.

  602. But he also knows

  603. that at some point

  604. the glory is going to be revealed.

  605. That's where Romans 8

  606. comes back in and says,

  607. creation is groaning.

  608. There is suffering.

  609. But my goodness,

  610. there is going to come a day

  611. where Jesus is going to return

  612. and we're going to see

  613. that glory again.

  614. I,

  615. as a fellow elder,

  616. exhort you

  617. as a witness

  618. of the sufferings of Christ

  619. as a partaker

  620. in the glory

  621. that is going to be revealed.

  622. This is my instruction.

  623. This is my advice.

  624. Shepherd the flock of God

  625. that is among you.

  626. Shepherd.

  627. Careful.

  628. Watch over

  629. is what he's saying.

  630. Shepherd the flock of God

  631. that is among you.

  632. And of course,

  633. straight away,

  634. we're thinking shepherd.

  635. What does a shepherd do?

  636. Is anyone a shepherd here?

  637. No.

  638. Hong Kong's mostly lawyers,

  639. bankers,

  640. doctors,

  641. no shepherds.

  642. But a shepherd,

  643. if you go back to Psalm 23,

  644. you'll see

  645. someone who cares,

  646. someone who leads

  647. the sheep

  648. to the green pastures,

  649. to the still waters,

  650. to the right path,

  651. but also to the valleys,

  652. the valleys of the shadow of death.

  653. Also prepares tables

  654. in the presence of the enemy

  655. in the sense that it protects.

  656. The shepherd protects,

  657. guides,

  658. and pursues.

  659. Surely his goodness and mercy

  660. will follow us

  661. all the days of our lives.

  662. A shepherd,

  663. someone who cares.

  664. And it's interesting here,

  665. it says,

  666. the shepherd,

  667. the flock of God.

  668. That,

  669. for me,

  670. I paused straight away

  671. as I read that

  672. because it's not

  673. shepherd the flock

  674. of James

  675. or shepherd the flock

  676. of Gabe

  677. or Christine

  678. or Joe

  679. or Alex.

  680. It's shepherd the flock

  681. of God.

  682. You're not actually mine.

  683. Thank goodness

  684. you are not mine.

  685. You are the Lord's.

  686. But all that does

  687. is make it even

  688. harder for me

  689. because I'm like,

  690. oh,

  691. I best look after this.

  692. I best look after this

  693. because this isn't mine.

  694. You guys are not mine.

  695. I've got to care for you,

  696. watch over you

  697. so when the chief shepherd

  698. appears,

  699. you will be beautiful.

  700. Shepherd the flock

  701. of God among you.

  702. The word among you

  703. is basically

  704. the ones in front of you.

  705. What does this tell me?

  706. I cannot choose

  707. who to pastor.

  708. If you're sat in this room,

  709. I'm hoping to shepherd you,

  710. to care for you,

  711. to watch over you.

  712. If you're sat in this room,

  713. it also goes the other way.

  714. You're looking at me

  715. and going,

  716. well,

  717. this is my shepherd.

  718. That's all I've got.

  719. There's this relationship

  720. which is,

  721. we're going to shepherd

  722. the flock that is

  723. in front of us,

  724. not the group

  725. that we wish to have

  726. because when we look

  727. at sheep,

  728. when we look at each other,

  729. when we look at people,

  730. it often gets ugly.

  731. Inherently flawed

  732. is what I am,

  733. as are you.

  734. But we shepherd the flock,

  735. we look after them

  736. because they're

  737. entrusted to us.

  738. And we exercise oversight

  739. to over,

  740. just,

  741. again,

  742. in Psalm 23,

  743. you'll see,

  744. even though I walk

  745. through the valley

  746. of the shadow of death,

  747. I will fear no evil.

  748. Your rod and your staff,

  749. they comfort me.

  750. Why?

  751. Because sheep would wander.

  752. So the shepherd would then

  753. actually have to use

  754. a rod and a staff

  755. to drag them out of the bushes,

  756. to take them away

  757. from the cliff edge.

  758. And so it's this constant

  759. of just caring and overseeing

  760. and to making sure

  761. that they're okay.

  762. And I don't do it,

  763. it says here,

  764. and not under compulsion,

  765. but willingly.

  766. And I can tell you this,

  767. I willingly,

  768. and it excites me

  769. and it loves me

  770. and it's my way

  771. of loving you

  772. when I come up

  773. to open up this word

  774. to you every day

  775. because I know

  776. that this is how

  777. I'm going to love you,

  778. this is how I'm going

  779. to shepherd you

  780. by telling you

  781. not just my wisdom

  782. and not just my truth

  783. because there is limited

  784. wisdom and truth

  785. that comes from me,

  786. but from this book.

  787. And I love that.

  788. And no one's forcing me

  789. to do this.

  790. I loved being a teacher

  791. in England.

  792. I can imagine sometimes

  793. going back to there

  794. because the students

  795. would do what I say.

  796. You guys don't really

  797. do what I say,

  798. but I love it.

  799. I love it

  800. and I wouldn't choose

  801. to be anywhere else

  802. is what I'm saying.

  803. Not for shameful gain,

  804. but eagerly

  805. and not domineering

  806. over those in your charge.

  807. I'm not here

  808. to force anyone.

  809. I can't force anyone.

  810. Everyone's here

  811. by their own volition.

  812. Everyone here

  813. has to make that decision

  814. to follow Jesus themselves.

  815. That's a hard one for me

  816. and I'll talk a little bit

  817. more about this later,

  818. but I have this idol

  819. which is control.

  820. I want to,

  821. well,

  822. mostly control myself

  823. and the circumstances

  824. around me,

  825. but that can translate

  826. into how I shepherd the flock.

  827. I can't force anyone

  828. to do anything.

  829. I'm not here to do that.

  830. All I'm here to do

  831. is to then be

  832. an example to you.

  833. We've had a group

  834. called The Fellowship

  835. this last year

  836. where we were challenging

  837. each other going,

  838. what does it mean

  839. to be a disciple of Jesus

  840. in Hong Kong

  841. where schedules are packed?

  842. And so we decided,

  843. actually,

  844. if this is the most important

  845. thing in our lives,

  846. we will make time

  847. to read the Bible.

  848. We will make time

  849. to pray for one another

  850. and guess what?

  851. We did.

  852. Every day,

  853. well,

  854. every weekday,

  855. we managed to do that

  856. but the main premise

  857. of that was,

  858. hey,

  859. I'm not going to force you

  860. to do this

  861. but here's the real challenge.

  862. How about you

  863. call yourself higher

  864. and me as your shepherd,

  865. I'll simply hold you there

  866. because we all know

  867. we need people

  868. around us

  869. to help us.

  870. We need accountability.

  871. accountability.

  872. I have,

  873. again,

  874. I've shared publicly

  875. that I've been trying

  876. to exercise more

  877. and one day

  878. I'll be able to beat

  879. my wife in a wrestling match

  880. and so therefore

  881. I signed up to the gym

  882. and I had brothers around me

  883. who will remind me,

  884. have you done leg day?

  885. And I said,

  886. I don't want to do leg day.

  887. Leg day's painful.

  888. But they're like,

  889. no,

  890. it's important

  891. for your overall health

  892. as you're building

  893. muscle everywhere.

  894. You need leg day.

  895. So I do it once a week,

  896. one set

  897. and that's it.

  898. But we need people

  899. around us

  900. to do this.

  901. But the whole point is

  902. I can't do it for you.

  903. I can't force you

  904. to do anything.

  905. I wouldn't want to.

  906. But you call yourself higher

  907. and I promise

  908. I can hold you there

  909. or at least I will try

  910. to hold you there.

  911. I will do it with you

  912. is what I'm saying.

  913. I'll be an example to you.

  914. 1 Corinthians 9.27

  915. is what was etched

  916. onto my basketball shoes

  917. as a university player

  918. and it said,

  919. I discipline my body,

  920. training it to do

  921. what it should

  922. lest after preaching

  923. to others

  924. I myself might be disqualified.

  925. For me,

  926. I'm all about,

  927. if I want you to do it,

  928. I'm going to do it first

  929. and I'm going to do it more.

  930. I discipline myself

  931. because the last thing

  932. I want is to tell you

  933. to do it

  934. and then you end up

  935. doing it and I don't

  936. and then I end up

  937. being disqualified.

  938. That's not what I want.

  939. That's why Paul says,

  940. 1 Corinthians 11.1,

  941. imitate me

  942. as I imitate Christ.

  943. Like look,

  944. we all want to follow Jesus.

  945. We want to follow

  946. in the ways of Jesus

  947. but Jesus we can't see right now.

  948. It's pretty hard

  949. but guess who they saw

  950. at that point?

  951. Paul.

  952. Guess who you can see

  953. at this point?

  954. You can see me.

  955. You can see Jojo.

  956. You can see Kelly.

  957. You can see Hank.

  958. You can see Gabs.

  959. You can see people who,

  960. okay,

  961. they're doing it.

  962. I'm going to follow them.

  963. That's the whole point

  964. of why we're gathering here together

  965. because it's hard to do it

  966. on our own

  967. but once we start seeing

  968. other people do it

  969. who are setting the example

  970. for us,

  971. then maybe we have

  972. a better chance

  973. of doing it ourselves.

  974. Shepherd the flock

  975. of God among you.

  976. Not domineering over those

  977. in your charge

  978. but being examples

  979. to the flock.

  980. And when the chief shepherd

  981. appears,

  982. oh,

  983. that's it.

  984. So I'm not the boss.

  985. Thank goodness.

  986. I'm the under shepherd.

  987. There is a chief who's coming.

  988. There is a glory

  989. that is going to be revealed

  990. and when he comes,

  991. I will receive

  992. the unfading crown of glory

  993. as will those

  994. who are leading,

  995. who are laying your lives down

  996. for the people

  997. that you're trying to lead.

  998. When you're pulling teeth,

  999. pulling people,

  1000. if you stay,

1001. if you stay on that road,

1002. if you continue to persist,

1003. when the chief shepherd appears,

  1004. you will receive

1005. the unfading crown of glory.

  1006. That's the one

  1007. that a racer gets.

  1008. That's the one

  1009. that an athlete gets.

  1010. That's the one

  1011. that the warrior gets.

1012. The crown belongs to you

1013. should you do all of this.

1014. But before he carries on

  1015. with that,

  1016. he then says,

  1017. stop.

  1018. Likewise,

  1019. you who are younger,

  1020. Mervyn, Jasper,

  1021. Hannah,

  1022. who else is younger?

  1023. There's lots of people

  1024. who are younger here.

  1025. He turns

  1026. and he says,

  1027. you who are younger,

1028. be subject to the elders.

  1029. That's a,

  1030. he kind of,

1031. he's on the same topic

1032. but then he kind of

1033. turns on the young people.

  1034. He says,

  1035. look,

  1036. you're around a lot of people

1037. who are older than you

  1038. and you might think

  1039. that you know everything

  1040. and they don't get

  1041. this new era,

  1042. this new generation

1043. of way of doing things.

  1044. He turns to them

  1045. and he says,

  1046. hey,

1047. be subject to the elders.

1048. This is a tough one.

1049. This is a tough one

  1050. because you've got to

1051. look at the people above you

1052. and often you disagree with them

  1053. because they don't

  1054. understand you either.

  1055. But when he's talking

  1056. to the church,

  1057. when he's talking

  1058. to the younger people,

  1059. he's saying,

  1060. hey,

1061. you're still going to have

  1062. to be subject

  1063. to the elders.

1064. There is still wisdom there.

  1065. I find myself,

  1066. okay,

  1067. so I think,

1068. I feel as though personally,

1069. this is a bit of a sharing

1070. of a midlife crisis situation

  1071. right here,

1072. is I think the young people

  1073. think I'm old

  1074. and the old people

  1075. think I'm young.

  1076. And I'm kind of,

  1077. I'm kind of stuck

  1078. in this middle ground.

  1079. At least that's what

  1080. I think anyway.

  1081. But,

1082. I think what happens is

  1083. I end up getting

  1084. to see both sides.

  1085. The older people

1086. looking at the young ones

  1087. going,

  1088. oh,

  1089. we can't trust them.

  1090. We can't trust them.

  1091. They make stupid mistakes.

  1092. And on the whole,

  1093. you know,

  1094. you're pretty stupid.

  1095. You know,

1096. because you make stupid mistakes,

  1097. as did we.

1098. But then the younger people

  1099. are like,

  1100. you don't understand us.

  1101. You don't understand us

1102. and you don't even know

1103. how to use your phone.

  1104. All you know

1105. is how to crush the candy

  1106. and that's it.

  1107. And you know,

1108. no one uses Facebook anymore.

1109. And I sit in the middle

  1110. and I'm going,

  1111. you know what,

  1112. there's such great things

  1113. that can be learned

  1114. from both sides.

  1115. If only both sides

  1116. are willing to listen.

1117. If only the young people

  1118. will just look up

  1119. and go,

  1120. wow,

  1121. you've lived so many

  1122. more years than I.

  1123. Yes,

1124. I really was in nappies

  1125. when you were already

  1126. doing this thing

  1127. called life.

  1128. There is something

  1129. to learn from you,

  1130. even the mistakes

  1131. that you made.

  1132. There's something

1133. that I can learn from you.

1134. And for an older person

1135. to then say the same

  1136. and going,

  1137. oh,

  1138. wow,

  1139. how do you use

  1140. this device?

  1141. How do you join

  1142. the TikTok?

  1143. Oh,

  1144. you have to move

  1145. out of Hong Kong.

  1146. Okay.

  1147. And he carries on

  1148. and you know

  1149. that's what he's saying

  1150. because he says,

  1151. clothe yourselves,

  1152. all of you,

  1153. with humility

  1154. toward one another.

  1155. So he says,

  1156. clothe yourselves

  1157. with humility

  1158. but then he says,

  1159. all of you,

1160. just before the old people

  1161. cross their arms

  1162. and say,

  1163. yes,

  1164. you young people,

  1165. be subject to us.

  1166. He turns,

  1167. he says,

  1168. all of you,

  1169. humble yourselves

  1170. toward one another

1171. for God opposes the proud

  1172. and gives grace

  1173. to the humble.

  1174. And this next part

  1175. is the prayer

  1176. that I pray always.

  1177. So therefore,

  1178. humble yourselves

  1179. under the mighty hand

  1180. of God

1181. so that at the proper time

  1182. he may exalt you,

  1183. casting all your anxieties

  1184. onto him

  1185. because he cares

  1186. for you.

  1187. That's my prayer

  1188. so often.

1189. he touches on the topic

  1190. that I think

1191. is the most important topic,

  1192. humility.

  1193. Humility.

  1194. I'm reminded of a

  1195. somewhat prideful

  1196. and embarrassing moment

  1197. for myself.

1198. Growing up as a young pastor

1199. and who liked to talk,

  1200. I saw,

  1201. I met a pastor

1202. who was very well known,

  1203. very experienced

  1204. in speaking

  1205. and I said,

  1206. hey,

  1207. I've got a couple people

  1208. who,

  1209. you know,

1210. around the same age as me,

  1211. same stage in ministry,

1212. would you like to mentor us

  1213. and teach us

  1214. how to speak,

1215. how to speak like you?

1216. And then he just said,

  1217. no.

  1218. I was like,

  1219. oh.

  1220. I said,

  1221. I said,

  1222. why?

  1223. He said,

  1224. well,

  1225. I think I've done that

  1226. quite a lot

1227. and one of the dangers

  1228. of that is

1229. if someone has the gifting

  1230. but they don't have

  1231. the character

  1232. or the humility,

  1233. it just ends up

  1234. in the wrong place.

  1235. He'd been in ministry

  1236. for 42 years

  1237. and every scandal,

  1238. every moral failure,

  1239. every just problem

  1240. that has happened

  1241. in the church

  1242. comes from this issue

  1243. called pride.

  1244. What happens

  1245. before the fall?

  1246. Pride.

  1247. And he's talking

  1248. to everyone,

  1249. young and old.

  1250. He's talking to you

  1251. and me

  1252. and you

  1253. and you.

  1254. Clothe yourselves.

  1255. Clothe yourselves

  1256. in the sense

  1257. that it's not natural

  1258. to you.

  1259. You don't wake up

  1260. and suddenly

  1261. you're humble.

  1262. In fact,

  1263. it's almost unnatural.

  1264. You have to go

  1265. and deliberately,

  1266. intentionally go

  1267. and clothe yourself

  1268. with humility

  1269. toward one another

  1270. for God opposes

  1271. the proud

  1272. and gives grace

  1273. to the humble.

  1274. And then he moves

  1275. into anxiety

  1276. which is really interesting

  1277. because he goes

  1278. humble yourselves

  1279. therefore under

1280. the mighty hand of God

  1281. and then he says

  1282. casting all your anxieties

  1283. onto him

1284. because he cares for you

1285. and that speaks to me.

  1286. I humble myself

1287. under the mighty hand of God

  1288. and then,

  1289. I mean,

  1290. I'm a very anxious person

1291. so I cast my anxieties

  1292. onto him.

1293. He's not jumping topics here.

  1294. It's the same thing.

  1295. Why?

  1296. Because anxiety

1297. is actually a form of pride.

1298. If you're an anxious person,

1299. if you're anxious about studies,

1300. if you're anxious about your work,

1301. if you're anxious about your relationships,

1302. did it ever occur to you

1303. that you're actually being prideful?

  1304. John Piper says this,

1305. anxiety is a fruit of pride

1306. because it is an attempt

  1307. to carry a weight

  1308. that only God

  1309. is designed to bear.

  1310. Humility casts

  1311. its burdens,

  1312. pride clings to them.

  1313. Let me read that

  1314. one more time.

1315. Anxiety is a fruit of pride

1316. because it is an attempt

  1317. to carry a weight

  1318. that only God

  1319. is designed to bear.

  1320. Humility casts its burdens,

  1321. pride clings to them.

  1322. As a leader,

  1323. I think about that

  1324. all the time.

1325. I have lots of anxieties

  1326. about how to keep

1327. a big group of people

1328. in a small office space

  1329. in Hong Kong

  1330. cool.

  1331. How to fit everyone,

  1332. how to welcome people.

  1333. So, you know,

  1334. you were very kind

  1335. in saying the gathering

  1336. was very welcoming,

  1337. but the truth is

  1338. it's so big,

  1339. we can't really

  1340. quality control that.

1341. Someone can walk in here

  1342. for a whole month

  1343. and not have anyone

  1344. speak to them,

1345. and that breaks my heart.

  1346. There's nothing,

  1347. we can't,

  1348. we haven't got a system

  1349. in place yet

1350. to figure that one out.

1351. So I'm anxious about that.

  1352. I'm anxious about

1353. the life groups that we have.

  1354. I'm anxious about

1355. the leaders that we have.

  1356. Are these groups

  1357. growing towards Jesus

  1358. or are they just

  1359. becoming social groups

  1360. where they're just

  1361. wanting to hang out?

1362. I have all these anxieties

  1363. as a pastor.

1364. Am I shepherding the flock well?

1365. And then God reminds me,

  1366. you know that anxiety

  1367. that you have, James,

1368. about a pretty good thing

1369. which is trying to care

  1370. for people?

  1371. Well, that's pride.

1372. Because this isn't your flock.

1373. One of the first people

  1374. that I discipled

  1375. was when I was 19,

1376. I was in second year university,

  1377. I had a friend

1378. who was two years younger

  1379. than me,

  1380. brought him to Christ

1381. and then I would lose sleep

  1382. over him

1383. for the next four years

  1384. because he then

  1385. showed up at university,

  1386. started hanging out

  1387. with the wrong crowd

  1388. and I would spend,

1389. how do I stop him

  1390. from hanging out

  1391. with that crowd?

1392. How do I stop him

1393. from going to these parties?

1394. How do I stop him

1395. from doing all these things?

1396. And I would get so caught up.

  1397. I'd be like a parent

  1398. lying in bed going,

  1399. where is he?

  1400. 1 a.m.

1401. He must be still out.

  1402. Every parent just has

  1403. that sad laugh.

  1404. We all know

  1405. what that feeling is.

1406. And then God reminded me

  1407. then going,

  1408. whew,

  1409. who taught,

  1410. you're treating him

  1411. like your project.

  1412. You're treating him

  1413. like he's yours.

  1414. He's not.

  1415. He's mine.

  1416. Shepherd of the flock

  1417. of God

  1418. that is among you

1419. and cast all your anxieties

  1420. onto him.

  1421. What about you?

  1422. If humility

  1423. is the key trait

  1424. of whether you truly

  1425. understand and grasp

  1426. what the gospel is,

  1427. do you have

  1428. this humility?

  1429. C.S. Lewis

  1430. has that quote

  1431. which is,

  1432. humility is not thinking

  1433. any less of yourself.

  1434. It's simply thinking

  1435. of yourself less.

  1436. So you're not so

  1437. self-centered.

  1438. My favorite quote

  1439. of humility

  1440. is being as close

  1441. to the truth

  1442. as possible.

  1443. C.S. Lewis

  1444. has another quote

  1445. which is,

  1446. the best view

  1447. of a man

  1448. is from below.

  1449. Recently quoted

  1450. in the Odyssey

  1451. as well.

  1452. Because when

  1453. you look

  1454. at how someone

  1455. treats someone

  1456. who is junior

  1457. to them,

  1458. you will see

  1459. whether they are

  1460. truly humble

  1461. or not.

  1462. Paul talks a lot

  1463. about this

  1464. in 1 Corinthians

  1465. that it's not

  1466. the wisdom

  1467. of the world

  1468. that we need.

  1469. We need people

  1470. who are willing

  1471. to be fools

  1472. for Christ.

  1473. Who recognize

  1474. that any wisdom

  1475. that we have,

  1476. any consulting firm

  1477. that has these

  1478. great things

  1479. to teach you

  1480. about how to live

  1481. and how to make

  1482. profits,

  1483. that is just

  1484. the wisdom

  1485. of the world.

  1486. And that's foolishness

  1487. when it comes

  1488. to the wisdom

  1489. of God.

  1490. And then be

  1491. sober-minded.

  1492. Be watchful.

  1493. Your adversary,

  1494. the devil,

  1495. is prowling

  1496. like a roaring lion

  1497. seeking someone

  1498. to devour.

  1499. I look at

  1500. all of us here

  1501. and I'm like,

  1502. the moment we leave

  1503. this sanctuary,

  1504. we go out,

  1505. we are bombarded

  1506. by messages

  1507. and images

1508. that we are not enough.

  1509. You've got voices

  1510. in your offices

  1511. that tell you

1512. what you should be doing,

  1513. the roles you

  1514. should be pursuing.

  1515. And what's that?

  1516. For me,

  1517. that's just the adversary,

  1518. the devil,

  1519. prowling around,

  1520. seeking someone

  1521. to devour,

  1522. someone to just

  1523. pluck away.

  1524. But then it says,

  1525. resist him,

  1526. firm in your faith.

  1527. And actually,

  1528. it's interesting,

  1529. I looked into this

  1530. this week

  1531. and I was praying

  1532. over this passage,

  1533. the Bible actually

  1534. never says,

  1535. flee from the devil,

  1536. never run away

  1537. from the devil.

  1538. The closest thing

  1539. is James 4,

    James 4:7

  1540. verse 7,

  1541. which says,

  1542. submit yourselves

  1543. to the Lord

  1544. and the devil

  1545. will flee

  1546. from you.

  1547. Sorry,

  1548. submit yourselves

  1549. to the Lord

  1550. and resist the devil

  1551. and he will flee

  1552. from you.

  1553. This imagery

  1554. that the devil

  1555. is a prowling,

  1556. roaring lion,

  1557. what Paul

  1558. and Peter

  1559. do not say

  1560. is,

  1561. fight him.

  1562. Because I don't think

  1563. there's anyone

  1564. who can fight

  1565. and beat a lion.

  1566. I look around

  1567. this room,

  1568. I mean,

  1569. maybe Gabs

  1570. and Ken

  1571. might have a chance

  1572. at doing it.

  1573. But it doesn't say,

1574. stand up to the lion,

  1575. fight him.

  1576. It says,

  1577. resist.

  1578. It's really interesting.

  1579. Submit yourself

  1580. to the Lord,

  1581. resist the devil

  1582. and the devil

  1583. will flee from you.

  1584. So actually,

  1585. this lion

  1586. that's prowling around,

  1587. whilst it looks scary,

  1588. doesn't actually

1589. have any power over us.

  1590. Isn't that interesting?

  1591. This prowling lion

  1592. doesn't have

  1593. any power over us.

  1594. Psalm 23,

  1595. 4,

  1596. even though I walk

  1597. through the valley

  1598. of the shadow

  1599. of death,

  1600. it's not even real.

  1601. It's a shadow

  1602. of death.

  1603. Imagine if we lived

  1604. in such a way

  1605. where that lion

  1606. cannot touch us

1607. and all we need to do

  1608. is resist

  1609. and stand firm

  1610. in the faith.

  1611. And knowing

  1612. that the same kinds

  1613. of suffering

  1614. are being experienced

  1615. by your brotherhood

  1616. throughout the world,

  1617. that what you're going

  1618. through right now,

  1619. you are not alone.

  1620. That's one of the

  1621. enemy's lies as well.

  1622. That everything

  1623. that you're going through,

  1624. whether it's with

  1625. your relationship

  1626. that you have,

  1627. at work,

  1628. at studies,

  1629. whatever it is,

  1630. and the temptations

  1631. that you're facing,

  1632. you're not alone.

  1633. It's being experienced

  1634. while you're

  1635. brotherhood all

  1636. around the world.

  1637. You are not alone.

  1638. I think that's another

  1639. reason why we gather,

  1640. to remind ourselves

1641. that we are not alone.

  1642. And after you have

  1643. suffered a little while,

  1644. so just nonchalant,

  1645. so casual,

  1646. okay,

  1647. you're going to suffer,

  1648. but you're going to

  1649. suffer a little while,

  1650. but you're going

  1651. to be okay.

  1652. It's 2 Corinthians 4,

  1653. 17.

  1654. It says,

  1655. do not lose heart.

  1656. Though your outer

  1657. cells are dying,

1658. wasting away day by day,

  1659. your inner cells

  1660. are being renewed.

  1661. And these light

  1662. momentary afflictions,

  1663. light,

  1664. feather-like,

  1665. momentary afflictions

  1666. are nothing when

  1667. compared to the

  1668. eternal weight of glory

  1669. that awaits you.

  1670. There's going to be,

  1671. there is suffering,

1672. but it's going to be

  1673. only a little while

  1674. when compared to the

  1675. glory that is going

  1676. to be revealed

  1677. when the chief shepherd

  1678. comes back.

  1679. Hang on.

  1680. If you are suffering,

  1681. you are in the

  1682. right place.

  1683. More importantly,

  1684. God is with you.

  1685. And after you have

  1686. suffered a little while,

1687. the God of all grace

  1688. who has called you

  1689. to his eternal glory

  1690. in Christ,

  1691. he himself will be

  1692. the one that restores

  1693. you,

  1694. confirms you,

  1695. strengthens you,

  1696. and establishes you.

  1697. Not the shepherd,

  1698. not the ordained

  1699. pastor,

  1700. he himself

  1701. will do it.

  1702. He will restore you.

  1703. Whatever's broken,

  1704. whatever's fractured

  1705. in your life,

  1706. in your heart,

1707. he will be the one

  1708. that restores it.

1709. And then when it says

  1710. confirm and strengthen,

1711. he's going to be the one

  1712. that stops you

  1713. from collapsing on yourself.

1714. He's going to be the one

  1715. that stops you

  1716. from toppling over

  1717. in this life.

1718. And he is the one

1719. that's going to establish you

1720. and root you in the ground

1721. so that you won't fall away.

  1722. He himself.

1723. The lion can do nothing.

1724. The pastor that you have

  1725. is simply an under-shepherd

1726. Called just to exercise oversight

1727. and be an example to you,

  1728. to care for you.

1729. But you can take encouragement

  1730. that the chief shepherd

  1731. is coming back

1732. and all you will have to do

1733. is suffer a little while

1734. and then he will call you

  1735. to his eternal glory.

  1736. Of course,

1737. when we think about the shepherd,

1738. when we think about Psalm 23,

  1739. we're only really thinking

  1740. about one person.

  1741. Jesus.

  1742. The shepherd who,

  1743. if we have him,

  1744. we will lack nothing.

1745. We will have no wants.

  1746. Jesus is the one

  1747. who leads us

  1748. to the green pastures

1749. where we will be fed

1750. with the truth of God,

  1751. the bread of life.

  1752. He is the one

  1753. who leads us

  1754. beside still waters

1755. where he will grant us peace,

1756. this peace that this world

  1757. cannot give.

  1758. He was the one

  1759. who will lead us

  1760. on the path

  1761. of righteousness,

  1762. the right path

  1763. for us,

  1764. for his namesake.

1765. It will be for him.

  1766. And sometimes that path

  1767. will lead you

  1768. to the valley

1769. of the shadow of death.

1770. But even when you're there

  1771. and you're surrounded

  1772. by shadows

  1773. and you're surrounded

  1774. by roaring lions,

  1775. you will not fear

  1776. because his rod

  1777. and his staff

1778. is the one that guides

  1779. and comforts.

  1780. In fact,

  1781. your greatest fear,

1782. whatever your greatest fear is,

  1783. he invites you

  1784. to come and sit

  1785. at the table

  1786. with that fear

1787. because he's prepared it there.

  1788. He's not even afraid.

  1789. He's chilled.

  1790. He's sat down.

1791. And when he anoints you,

  1792. your cup overflows.

  1793. And all this while,

  1794. while you've been a sheep,

  1795. trying to cling on

  1796. to the shepherd,

  1797. trying to pursue him,

1798. thinking that the Christian life

  1799. is hard,

  1800. guess what?

  1801. Surely his goodness

  1802. and mercy

  1803. will follow you

  1804. all the days

  1805. of your life.

  1806. It's not been you

  1807. chasing after him.

  1808. It's been him chasing

  1809. after you all along.

1810. That is the true shepherd.

1811. That is the chief shepherd

1812. who laid his life down

  1813. for us

  1814. and humbled himself

1815. to the point of death,

  1816. even death

  1817. on the cross.

  1818. He who gave us

  1819. his crowns,

1820. he gave us his robe

1821. so that we would have life.

  1822. That should humble us

  1823. to the core

  1824. and anxiety should flee.

  1825. We're going to take

  1826. communion later,

  1827. but before that,

  1828. I'm going to invite

  1829. a friend up.

  1830. I said I've been trying

1831. to do this a little bit more.

1832. We won't do this every week,

  1833. but when it comes

  1834. to shepherding,

1835. it'll be of great comfort

  1836. and consolation to you

1837. that I am not the only one

  1838. who is shepherding

  1839. this flock here.

  1840. We have a group

  1841. of leaders

1842. that we all met last night,

  1843. but then there's

  1844. a smaller group

  1845. called the lead team

  1846. that has been here

  1847. from pretty close

  1848. to the beginning.

  1849. I'm going to invite

  1850. a dear friend up,

  1851. Alex Lee.

  1852. We're going to have

  1853. a little chat

  1854. and hopefully he'll tell

  1855. you some stuff

  1856. that maybe I have

1857. no way of telling you

  1858. either.

  1859. Can we give you

  1860. a round of applause?

  1861. Hey, Alex.

  1862. Let's take a seat

1863. so you don't look as tall.

  1864. Thank you.

  1865. Tell us about yourself.

  1866. About myself?

1867. Well, my name is Alex.

  1868. Alex.

1869. I grew up in the States.

  1870. I'm sorry.

1871. The son of two immigrants

  1872. who left Taiwan

1873. to raise me in the States

  1874. with nothing

1875. and so I spent most

1876. of my life in the States

  1877. before coming here

  1878. to Hong Kong.

1879. now married to my wife,

  1880. Cara.

  1881. Congratulations.

  1882. Thank you.

  1883. And I moved here

1884. at the very start of COVID

  1885. to marry Cara

1886. to start my new job

  1887. in the global

  1888. telecommunications industry

  1889. and then fast forward

1890. kind of six and a half

  1891. years later

  1892. and meeting yourself

  1893. and just many people

  1894. in this body.

  1895. Just grateful

1896. to be seated here now

  1897. and of course

1898. we had our two young daughters

1899. as well who were upstairs

  1900. and here we are.

  1901. And did you go

  1902. to the same college

  1903. as Hank?

  1904. Is that...

  1905. We did.

  1906. Wow.

1907. Not at the same time.

  1908. 100 years apart

  1909. or something like that.

  1910. Roughly speaking.

  1911. And of course

  1912. you're here to leaders

  1913. and servers as well

  1914. and you're always

  1915. encouraging to me

1916. and I share this passage

  1917. with you

  1918. at the beginning

  1919. of the week

  1920. and you've been

  1921. ruminating over it

  1922. and praying over it.

  1923. What's come to mind

1924. for you that you think

1925. is good to bring up

  1926. here today?

1927. I think the first thing

  1928. I mean before even

  1929. like speaking about

  1930. this specific passage

1931. is I think my main

  1932. takeaway and kind of

  1933. well honestly

  1934. meditating over this

  1935. not just this week

1936. but as a lead team

  1937. we went through this

  1938. I can't remember

  1939. maybe three six months

  1940. ago now

1941. and the very kind of

  1942. obvious takeaways

  1943. for all of us

1944. is like oh this is

1945. this is just a passage

  1946. about leadership

1947. and then we read this

  1948. again last month

  1949. and honestly what God

  1950. was speaking in that

  1951. moment to me was

  1952. this is a passage

  1953. about identity

  1954. because you read verse

  1955. one and you see

  1956. just how in tune

  1957. Peter is

  1958. I mean of course

  1959. I mean you probably

1960. have to read the rest

  1961. of first Peter

  1962. to kind of understand

1963. like the rest of the

1964. book is a book about

1965. what does it mean to be

  1966. a Christian?

1967. What does it mean to be

  1968. a disciple of Christ?

1969. What does it mean to

  1970. follow him to endure

  1971. his sufferings?

  1972. Like he talks literally

  1973. just about suffering

1974. at the end of chapter

  1975. four just before this

  1976. so really this leadership

1977. piece is almost kind of

  1978. just like a small

  1979. appetizer like in the

  1980. middle of it

  1981. but really I think

1982. yeah it just kind of

1983. weighed on me just how

  1984. Peter just really wanted

1985. the church at this time

  1986. to understand just how

1987. much the glory of Christ

  1988. weighed on him

  1989. and our life group

  1990. talked about kind of

  1991. like earlier this week

  1992. what does it

  1993. what does God's glory

  1994. even mean?

  1995. so to just really

  1996. set in on that

  1997. and just try to

  1998. understand Peter

  1999. and his shoes

  2000. and he just really

  2001. intimately knew Christ

  2002. I mean he's one of

  2003. the guys that like

  2004. walked with Jesus

  2005. and I think that

  2006. before you do any

  2007. sort of leading

  2008. any sort of serving

  2009. I think that that

  2010. identity piece is

  2011. just so key

  2012. so that was the

  2013. reflection when we

  2014. got together about

  2015. a month ago

  2016. and then just

  2017. ruminating over this

  2018. probably every day

  2019. this week

2020. I think by the time

  2021. I got to Friday

  2022. I messaged you

  2023. I was like okay

  2024. because you're like

  2025. hey what should we

  2026. have a dialogue on

  2027. and I know your

  2028. sermon just covered

  2029. which is impressive

  2030. you covered literally

  2031. everything

  2032. and there's just so

  2033. many different topics

  2034. in here

2035. but it just came back

  2036. again to oh let's

  2037. just have a discussion

  2038. on leadership

  2039. but even before

  2040. doing that

  2041. I think probably

  2042. my exhortation

  2043. and encouragement

  2044. to this group

  2045. to this church

  2046. would probably be

  2047. that I mean

  2048. God's word is just

  2049. it's beautiful right

  2050. if you haven't opened

2051. it in a long time

  2052. or you feel like

  2053. you struggle to open

2054. it on like a regular

  2055. basis

  2056. I would just say

  2057. I'll just start

  2058. just start small

  2059. start somewhere

  2060. I mean that's literally

2061. what I did for my

  2062. devotional this week

2063. is I just read these

  2064. 11 verses

2065. every day in the morning

  2066. it wasn't

  2067. don't get me wrong

  2068. I didn't sit there

  2069. for like two hours

  2070. with noise cancelling

  2071. headphones on

  2072. just taking this in

  2073. maybe it was just

  2074. a couple minutes a day

  2075. but if that's you

  2076. I mean I would just

  2077. encourage you

  2078. like put away the

  2079. put away the

  2080. the barrier

  2081. which is the

  2082. Bible 365 plan

  2083. and the intimidation

  2084. that comes with that

  2085. and I can't get

  2086. started

  2087. and just pick

  2088. any passage

  2089. honestly I would

  2090. encourage you to

  2091. pick this passage

  2092. because it's

  2093. there's just so much

  2094. in this passage

  2095. that I feel like

  2096. God speaks to

  2097. different people

  2098. in different seasons

  2099. but maybe the last

  2100. thing I'll add

  2101. before we continue

  2102. is I think

  2103. just the very

  2104. last thing is

  2105. we had settled

  2106. on discussing

  2107. leadership on

  2108. Friday

  2109. and then Saturday

  2110. morning

  2111. I hadn't even

  2112. told you

  2113. I was like

  2114. I think verses

  2115. 6 to 11

  2116. like I'm reading

  2117. it

  2118. God's word is good

  2119. but I'm

  2120. I don't think

  2121. I can take away

  2122. much to like

  2123. discuss here

  2124. but then

  2125. lo and behold

  2126. I think yesterday

  2127. morning

  2128. it was that

  2129. probably like

  2130. that last half

  2131. that was kind of

  2132. speaking to me more

  2133. and God was

  2134. reminding me of

  2135. I guess just like

  2136. what suffering

  2137. looks like in my

  2138. own life

  2139. you know

  2140. certain challenges

  2141. that I'm facing

  2142. with like my

  2143. parents and my

  2144. mom and just

  2145. being like

  2146. reminded to pray

  2147. over those things

  2148. and then lo and

  2149. behold

  2150. that same morning

  2151. I bumped into

  2152. this sister from

  2153. another church

  2154. that we serve in

  2155. prison ministry

  2156. with

  2157. and it was

  2158. just like a

  2159. total chance

  2160. encounter at

  2161. the mall

  2162. and she was

  2163. just sharing

  2164. with me some

  2165. of her burdens

  2166. and challenges

  2167. she was facing

  2168. and raising

  2169. her adult son

  2170. so just the

  2171. beauty in getting

  2172. to meditate

  2173. on this passage

  2174. to encounter

  2175. each other

  2176. and then to

  2177. pray together

  2178. that morning

  2179. just reminds me

  2180. of like

  2181. what happens

  2182. when we really

  2183. allow ourselves

  2184. to

  2185. we really allow

  2186. the Holy Spirit

  2187. to minister

  2188. to ourselves

  2189. and to lead

  2190. us as we

  2191. open God's word

  2192. so that's

  2193. probably where

  2194. I would start

  2195. before even

  2196. anything else

  2197. we go into

  2198. leadership today

  2199. and you talk

  2200. about your

  2201. journey of

  2202. leadership

  2203. whether it's

  2204. actually your

  2205. own experience

  2206. of the leaders

  2207. that God

  2208. placed above you

  2209. and then of

  2210. course now

  2211. coming here

  2212. and growing

  2213. into leadership

  2214. role yourself

  2215. what's some

  2216. of the reflections

  2217. that you had

  2218. that are tied

  2219. in with this

  2220. passage

  2221. yeah I think

  2222. in terms of

  2223. maybe like

  2224. my personal

  2225. journey with

  2226. leadership

  2227. I never

  2228. choose to be

  2229. a leader

  2230. I mean from

  2231. the I think

  2232. my earliest

  2233. memory of being

  2234. a leader

  2235. is in the

  2236. third grade

  2237. in the US

  2238. is like

  2239. when you're

  2240. eight years

  2241. old

  2242. and my mom's

  2243. like hey

  2244. you should run

  2245. for like

  2246. student government

  2247. for your class

  2248. and I was like

  2249. so the dork

  2250. I'm not like

  2251. I wasn't like

  2252. popular kid

  2253. it's like

  2254. dorky Asian kid

  2255. in the most

  2256. mostly like

  2257. western American

  2258. school right

  2259. and then somehow

  2260. I mean obviously

  2261. my mom's just

  2262. having like

  2263. Ivy League dreams

  2264. of me at like

  2265. eight years old

2266. and no I did not

  2267. I did not go

  2268. to Ivy League

  2269. but at least

  2270. I made it to

  2271. the same school

  2272. as Hank

  2273. that's my

  2274. that's my

  2275. saving grace

  2276. and so

  2277. I was kind of

  2278. lo and behold

  2279. ended up

  2280. winning this

  2281. student election

  2282. and getting to

  2283. leave of course

  2284. I couldn't tell

  2285. you like

  2286. anything about it

  2287. other than the

  2288. fact that I was

  2289. coerced into

  2290. doing it

  2291. and then all the

  2292. way to an adult

  2293. now you know

  2294. in my work

  2295. several years ago

  2296. my boss asked me

  2297. can you help me

  2298. can you can I

  2299. put you in charge

  2300. of my like

  2301. organization redesign

  2302. I was like

  2303. sure

  2304. you're definitely

  2305. asking the wrong

  2306. person but

  2307. I'll help

  2308. anyway

  2309. and every draft

  2310. and every iteration

  2311. I gave him

  2312. at this time

  2313. I was an

  2314. individual contributor

  2315. and led no team

  2316. at work

  2317. every draft

  2318. I gave him

  2319. was like

  2320. yep we should

  2321. grow this space

  2322. we should grow

  2323. Bill's team

  2324. we should grow

  2325. Bob's team

  2326. and you know

  2327. you should kind of

  2328. maybe merge like

  2329. Mike and Matt's

  2330. teams together

  2331. and you know

  2332. there's your design

2333. and it just kind of

2334. keeps me in my own

  2335. space

  2336. and every time

  2337. he came back

  2338. he's like

  2339. actually we should

  2340. put more of the

  2341. stuff in your

  2342. team

  2343. I was like

  2344. I don't have a team

  2345. he's like

  2346. well you should

  2347. I was like

  2348. I would not

2349. like to lead a team

  2350. so no matter

  2351. the 10-15 drafts

  2352. I brought back

  2353. to him

  2354. every time

  2355. that didn't

  2356. include me leading

  2357. it still came back

  2358. to him

  2359. and of course

  2360. lo and behold

  2361. I think we know

  2362. how the story ends

  2363. I do end up

  2364. leading

  2365. so it's not

  2366. something I

  2367. often choose

  2368. but I think

  2369. you did mention

  2370. as well as

  2371. kind of like

  2372. the leaders

  2373. and mentors

  2374. in my life

  2375. and I think

  2376. you've mentioned

  2377. here to everyone

  2378. many times

  2379. like we're a product

  2380. of the kind of

  2381. five people

  2382. we surround

  2383. ourselves with

  2384. and that's

  2385. so true

  2386. for the leaders

  2387. the shepherds

  2388. like the elders

  2389. the mentors

  2390. in our lives

  2391. as well

  2392. and you know

  2393. I'm just so grateful

  2394. for just all the

  2395. different

  2396. like I just think

  2397. about all the

  2398. different leaders

  2399. I've been able

  2400. to encounter

  2401. over the years

  2402. and how they've

  2403. poured into me

  2404. and how they've

  2405. ministered to me

  2406. and I think

  2407. I've had this

  2408. unique privilege

  2409. as well

  2410. in terms of

  2411. growing up

  2412. in Texas

  2413. in the States

  2414. now being in

  2415. Hong Kong

  2416. the thing

  2417. that connects

  2418. those two places

  2419. is they both

  2420. love pastors

  2421. they love to put

  2422. pastors on a pedestal

  2423. so I think

  2424. I learned early on

  2425. just to be discerning

  2426. about like

  2427. what does it mean

  2428. to actually follow

  2429. good leaders

  2430. and to understand

2431. the heart of a leader

  2432. not just

  2433. things they do

  2434. or their CV

  2435. but what's like

  2436. really in their heart

  2437. and I think

  2438. I've just been

  2439. super privileged

  2440. in terms of

  2441. every step along

  2442. the way

  2443. having kind of

  2444. those good leaders

  2445. who have that

  2446. good heart

  2447. but then on the

  2448. flip side of things

  2449. I think leaders

  2450. are also a product

  2451. of the people

  2452. they lead

  2453. as well

  2454. and I think

  2455. if we think

  2456. about that

  2457. that kind of

  2458. verse two

  2459. when we talk

  2460. about shepherding

  2461. the flock

  2462. that is among you

  2463. exercising oversight

  2464. not under compulsion

  2465. but willingly

  2466. not for shameful gain

  2467. but eagerly as well

  2468. like I'm just

  2469. grateful that

  2470. in this time

  2471. like in our gathering

  2472. like I would say

  2473. like leading

  2474. and just journey

  2475. alongside all the people

  2476. leading alongside

  2477. the people

  2478. I've gotten to lead

  2479. with journey

  2480. alongside the people

  2481. and like the different

  2482. stages of life group

  2483. like I would say

  2484. like willingness

  2485. and eagerness

  2486. just like defines that

  2487. which I'm grateful for

  2488. because that's not

  2489. common

  2490. to be honest

  2491. in many churches

  2492. and I specifically

  2493. remember a moment

  2494. I think

2495. we had a leaders meeting

  2496. at your place

  2497. I think one time

  2498. I can't remember why

  2499. but I remember

  2500. God's words

  2501. were just so clear

2502. to me in that moment

  2503. which was like

  2504. like for whatever reason

  2505. I was just reflecting

  2506. on past seasons

  2507. of not just leadership

  2508. but just like being

  2509. in community

  2510. and God's word

  2511. was just like

  2512. oh it just keeps

  2513. it keeps getting better

  2514. and that's just

  2515. genuinely how I feel

  2516. about this community

  2517. and just the privilege

2518. it is to lead here

2519. to learn from so many people

  2520. and yeah

  2521. so definitely

  2522. someone who's just

  2523. been shaped by

  2524. both the leaders

  2525. and the people

2526. I've got to lead as well

2527. we had a fun conversation

  2528. well maybe fun's

  2529. not the right word

  2530. a challenging conversation

2531. as we were leading up to this

  2532. in terms of actually

  2533. the things that you

  2534. disagree with me with

2535. how do you keep me humble?

  2536. other than jokes

  2537. about buying shoes

  2538. and calling you out

2539. in front of your wife

2540. and things of that nature

  2541. so I think

  2542. kind of going back

  2543. to that heart

  2544. of like I guess

  2545. I think you've known me

2546. for what six years now

2547. and I think you know

  2548. I've never had the

  2549. kind of like

  2550. pastor is the

  2551. the prime person

2552. and don't get me wrong

  2553. because I know

2554. there's people in this space

2555. and I do want to

  2556. recognize as well

  2557. there's people

  2558. who maybe

  2559. have been upset

  2560. or frustrated

  2561. or even hurt

  2562. by church leadership

2563. or pastors in the past

  2564. so it is

  2565. a very difficult job

  2566. to walk

  2567. and to

  2568. well essentially

2569. you do a lot of talking

  2570. but it's a difficult job

  2571. to walk the talk

  2572. as well

  2573. and to

  2574. quote unquote

2575. keep so many people happy

  2576. even though that's not

  2577. really meant to be

  2578. the end goal

2579. at the end of the day

  2580. but I would

  2581. say in terms of

2582. I guess keeping you honest

  2583. again it's

  2584. it's probably

  2585. for me

  2586. it's I always look

  2587. at your heart

  2588. as well

  2589. when people ask me

  2590. they're like

  2591. you know maybe

  2592. they see pictures online

  2593. we're hanging out

  2594. like people back home

  2595. in the states

  2596. are like

  2597. who's the bald guy

  2598. you've been hanging out

  2599. with so much

  2600. I'm like

  2601. my temptation every time

  2602. is like

  2603. oh that's my pastor

  2604. but actually

  2605. that's my friend

  2606. like that's probably

  2607. the first word

  2608. I would think of

  2609. followed by like

  2610. my brother

  2611. before I even think

  2612. about calling you

  2613. like my pastor

2614. to my friends back home

  2615. so I think

  2616. just thinking about

  2617. you know

  2618. inverse

  2619. what is it

  2620. inverse

  2621. what is this inverse

  2622. where's our example

  2623. inverse

  2624. I've lost it now

  2625. first three

  2626. yeah I think

  2627. first and foremost

  2628. I just think about

  2629. the example you lead

2630. with each and every day

2631. I see how you lead

  2632. your family

2633. so I take all those

  2634. things into kind of

  2635. context like

  2636. before we even jump

  2637. into like

  2638. just different church

  2639. decisions

2640. and even as we do

  2641. that

  2642. I think

  2643. I think you and I

2644. it's not like we have

  2645. deep disagreements

  2646. but it's

  2647. it's recognizing that

  2648. you know

  2649. I'm willing to say

  2650. like oh this

  2651. maybe I don't

  2652. agree with how

2653. you want to do something

2654. but I always know why

  2655. like I always know

  2656. the heart behind it

  2657. I think a cheap

  2658. like a cheap example

  2659. that is

  2660. like you really want

  2661. to get to know

  2662. everyone

2663. that comes in the door

  2664. and I'm the like

  2665. corporate pragmatist

  2666. that's like

  2667. think about the most

  2668. productive

  2669. efficient way

  2670. to like

  2671. to use your time

  2672. because maybe a lot

  2673. of people that

  2674. walk in the door

  2675. actually maybe not

  2676. maybe don't even

  2677. want to spend time

2678. or get to know you

  2679. either as well

  2680. so I think it's just

  2681. like in those moments

2682. I think you have the

  2683. humility to kind of

  2684. receive that feedback

  2685. and I think a lot of

  2686. times you just input

  2687. like you immediately

  2688. change your approach

  2689. you know anytime

  2690. we give you feedback

  2691. whether it's myself

  2692. or Gabe or Joe

2693. or other leaders as well

  2694. final thing

  2695. just

  2696. what's the prayer

2697. for all of us here

  2698. as a community

  2699. as we

  2700. either seek to become

  2701. leaders or already

  2702. leaders

  2703. and what are we

2704. what are we praying for

  2705. I think the probably

  2706. final thing is

  2707. because we've had

  2708. different discussions

  2709. like as a leadership

  2710. team we're like

  2711. oh what's the mark

  2712. of a leader

  2713. and I think

  2714. every time

  2715. it just comes back

  2716. to

  2717. we start to go

  2718. through like

  2719. this proverbial list

  2720. and every time

  2721. it's really like

  2722. these are really

  2723. just the marks

  2724. of a disciple

  2725. just like someone

  2726. who follows Jesus

  2727. it has nothing

  2728. to do with

  2729. the kind of position

  2730. they're in

  2731. or the

  2732. particular

  2733. responsibilities

  2734. they have

  2735. it's just like

  2736. you know

  2737. people who follow

  2738. Christ will live

  2739. sacrificially for others

  2740. they'll love others

  2741. well

  2742. they will minister

  2743. to people

  2744. like whether

  2745. or not you believe

  2746. you'll fit the

  2747. description of a shepherd

2748. I think you kind of

  2749. touched on it earlier

  2750. I think honestly

  2751. like I know

  2752. there's different

  2753. giftings

  2754. there's different ways

  2755. in how people

  2756. love to minister

  2757. as well

  2758. but honestly

  2759. I think everyone

  2760. does have this kind

  2761. of gift of shepherding

  2762. in some regard

  2763. whether it's

2764. I mean it could just

  2765. be your like

  2766. you know

  2767. your spouse

  2768. your kids

  2769. you know

  2770. I know there's

  2771. Christina mentioned

  2772. there's just so many

  2773. people who are just

  2774. like introverts

  2775. you know

  2776. it's I don't feel

  2777. like I can go

  2778. out of my way

  2779. but it's like

  2780. who is

  2781. who's already

  2782. in your way

  2783. you know

  2784. who are the people

  2785. that God has

  2786. clearly entrusted

  2787. in your care

  2788. how do you go

  2789. deep with them

  2790. how do you

  2791. humble yourself

  2792. before them

  2793. how do you

  2794. recognize the anxiety

  2795. that they carry

  2796. how do you

  2797. journey alongside

  2798. with them

  2799. and that

  2800. so that's probably

  2801. the encouragement

  2802. I leave everyone

  2803. with is

  2804. this passage

  2805. is really a call

  2806. to discipleship

  2807. is a call

  2808. to follow Christ

  2809. and you know

  2810. as we do those

  2811. things

  2812. would we just

  2813. open ourselves

  2814. to Holy Spirit

  2815. to lead us

  2816. in terms of

  2817. our shepherding

  2818. thank you very much

  2819. for your time

  2820. thanks

  2821. thank you

2822. give him a round of applause

  2823. I think

  2824. not everyone

  2825. is called

  2826. to be a shepherd

  2827. but I think

  2828. everyone has been

  2829. called to make

  2830. disciples

  2831. right

  2832. and what does

  2833. that look like

  2834. for you

  2835. what does it look

  2836. like for me

  2837. it is different

  2838. there are

  2839. I'll quickly

  2840. reel off some

  2841. of the needs

  2842. that we have

  2843. we need a welcome

  2844. team

  2845. we need someone

  2846. to help

  2847. actually help

  2848. newcomers feel welcome

  2849. and actually

  2850. if you've been

  2851. part of this church

  2852. for maybe

  2853. three months

  2854. and you remember

  2855. what it's like

  2856. to come into

  2857. a sea

  2858. of people

  2859. that you're just

  2860. completely unfamiliar

  2861. with and you're

  2862. freaking out over

  2863. that maybe you

  2864. are perfectly

  2865. qualified now

  2866. to become

  2867. one of the

  2868. welcome team

  2869. members

  2870. to help

  2871. we need help

  2872. with youth

  2873. we need help

  2874. with youth

  2875. stepping into

  2876. the lives

  2877. of even younger

  2878. people

  2879. just constantly

  2880. for me

  2881. it's just

  2882. can generations

  2883. just keep

  2884. pouring into

  2885. the next generation

  2886. so we need

  2887. people who are

  2888. willing to do that

  2889. we need people

  2890. who are willing

  2891. to teach the kids

  2892. upstairs

  2893. people who are

  2894. willing to serve

  2895. in the worship team

  2896. and AV

  2897. and there are so

  2898. many different

  2899. opportunities

  2900. all of it

  2901. is really that

  2902. mission statement

  2903. second point

  2904. that can we just

  2905. come and use

  2906. the gifts

  2907. that we've been

  2908. given

  2909. but all of it

  2910. comes back to

  2911. just the one

  2912. thing

  2913. there's one metric

  2914. that I measure

  2915. my own heart

  2916. with and I hope

  2917. that you would

  2918. measure yours

  2919. with

  2920. it's just

  2921. would we

  2922. humble ourselves

  2923. under the mighty

  2924. hand of God

  2925. and cast our

  2926. anxieties

  2927. onto him

  2928. he who himself

  2929. had the crown

  2930. had the robe

  2931. but emptied himself

  2932. who took the form

  2933. of a servant

  2934. becoming just like us

  2935. humbled himself

  2936. to the point

  2937. of death

  2938. even death

  2939. on the cross

  2940. and now we

  2941. finish by

  2942. looking to

  2943. this chief shepherd

  2944. and some of the

  2945. last words that he

  2946. said to us

  2947. which was

  2948. over communion

  2949. and so we're

2950. going to have a time

  2951. now where

  2952. we'll have the

  2953. elements that are

  2954. passed around

  2955. if you are

  2956. a follower of

  2957. Christ

  2958. and you've been

  2959. baptized

  2960. into this community

  2961. then we welcome you

2962. to take this with us

  2963. if you don't understand

  2964. what it is

  2965. that is completely

  2966. okay

  2967. just simply

  2968. just pass it along

  2969. and it's only

2970. going to be a few

  2971. minutes

  2972. and then we'll be

  2973. wrapping the service

  2974. up afterwards

  2975. so can I just

  2976. invite you to

  2977. just close your eyes

  2978. and bow your heads

  2979. so

  2980. just turn your eyes

  2981. to the Lord
