  1. We'll turn to Mark chapter 11 this morning, Mark chapter 11, as we continue here looking

Mark 11 chapter mention Mark 11 chapter mention

  2. through at the life of Jesus, as we've come to the final days of Jesus' ministry here

  3. upon the earth.

  4. And the Bible gives us more information about this period in His life than any other.

  5. It gives us all sorts of details along the way in this final seven to eight days here

  6. we are looking at.

  7. And we see Jesus as He had entered into Jerusalem just a couple days earlier from where we're

  8. looking here, He had entered in and the people had greeted Him joyfully and honored Him.

  9. And He'd made His way into the temple and then returned back away from the city of Jerusalem

  10. into the town of Bethany.

  11. And on Monday on His way back into Jerusalem there and the temple, we find that when He

  12. entered the temple, He began to cleanse the area and teaching people and preaching about

  13. the use of the temple.

  14. That was not to be a place of merchandise, but a place of prayer, a place where people could

  15. connect and communicate with God.

  16. It was a place that was supposed to be something that would build people's relationship and

  17. draw them to the Lord.

  18. But we find here, before He went into the temple that day, on His way to Jerusalem, Jesus

  19. was hungry, so He looked for some figs on His way and had some leaves.

  20. And we're going to be reading through about that.

  21. But He expected some figs to be present as the leaves were formed upon the tree.

  22. Now just a little interesting tidbit there for you on that.

  23. Figs produce fruit before leaves.

  24. Leaves were present with an expectation of fruit to be on the tree.

  25. And so we're going to look here as Jesus finds no figs upon it and He responds by condemning

  26. the tree for the lack of figs.

  27. And we're going to look here because this event, the next day as Peter finds that the tree

  28. has withered away, we find that Peter asks him a question about it.

  29. He makes note of it and Jesus gives a response towards him.

  30. We're going to look at here today the reality of that faith that must draw us to God.

  31. And so we find here, as we begin looking here in Mark chapter 11, we found Mark chapter 11

Mark 11 chapter mention Mark 11 chapter mention

  32. this morning.

  33. Go ahead and stand together in honor of the reading of the Word of God.

  34. And we'll read a couple of verses here up at verses 12 through 14, and then we'll skip

  35. down to verse 20.

  36. And so we find here, it says in verse 12,

  37. Now verse 20,

  38. we find the next day after Jesus had cleansed the temple and went back out, they're coming

  39. back into the town the next day.

  40. It says,

  41. In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

  42. And Peter says,

  43. Remember, and saith unto him,

  44. Master, behold,

  45. the thing that thou artest thou artest is withered away.

  46. And Jesus answering saith unto them,

  47. Have faith in God.

  48. And when you stand praying, forgive.

  49. If you have ought against any, that your Father also is in heaven, may forgive you your trespasses.

  50. And if you do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Heavenly Father, as we come before you this morning, Lord, we're so thankful for your word, Lord,

  53. as we look at this lesson on faith and trusting you and what it means,

  54. what that looks like and the necessities around it.

  55. Lord, we pray just have your hand upon each heart, each life here today.

  56. Lord, you know each one.

  57. You know the needs that we bring in.

  58. Lord, you know the challenges that we face.

  59. Lord, would you just help us to focus upon the truth of your word today,

  60. even in the midst of those things,

  61. that the principal reality is we need to have faith in you.

  62. And Lord, we pray just have your hand upon each one today in a mighty way.

  63. And let us ask it in your precious name.

  64. Amen.

  65. You may be seated.

  66. You know, while we can make application to our lives and other events and parables in Scripture,

  67. one thing we always need to be careful of is to make sure we focus on the way that Jesus presented something.

  68. Because oftentimes people have read this passage talking about him cursing the fig tree,

  69. and you'll find a lot of people try to put a lot of speculation into it.

  70. But we're going to stick to how Jesus described and the focus that Jesus put on the event

  71. and what Jesus had to say about it.

  72. Because when it comes to the Scripture,

  73. when Jesus gives an illustration or an application to something,

  74. we can rest assured it's the right one.

  75. It's what he wanted us to know and what he wanted us to understand about the truth of the matter.

  76. But we find here that the next morning here,

  77. after Jesus had returned back into the city,

  78. we find the disciples were fascinated as they passed the tree

  79. that the day before on Monday had leaves and was green and growing and looked vibrant.

  80. And the next morning, the tree was withered up.

  81. It's dried up.

  82. You know, there was nothing more to it.

  83. It was dried up from the root.

  84. And notice what Peter asked him here in verse 21.

  85. Or says to him,

  86. And Peter, calling to remember, saith unto him,

  87. Master, behold the fig tree which thou cursest is withered away.

  88. You know, it wasn't hard for the disciples to see the difference.

  89. You know, the day before that tree was very green, it was noticeable.

  90. From even afar off, Jesus made note of how green it was from afar

  91. because he came looking for the figs.

  92. He made note of what had appeared and what was there.

  93. And one day it's green and lush.

  94. And the next day, this word withered,

  95. literally, if you've been driving around Lincoln lately,

  96. you see a lot of withered trees.

  97. That's the same term.

  98. In other words, it was dried up.

  99. All the leaves had turned brown.

  100. There was nothing left of what brought any vibrancy.

  101. And you know, we walk, you drive around town,

  102. you see all these piles of tree limbs that have withered away.

  103. That's what happened to this tree overnight.

  104. Now, that's the reason the disciples could very easily notice that

  105. and make attention to it because that would be pretty obvious.

  106. If you've got a tree that's totally green one day

  107. and you come back the next day and it's dried up from the root,

  108. all the leaves are dried up, everything just withered away on it,

  109. it would catch your attention.

  110. And we find here it did just that.

  111. And it was completely,

  112. it was not natural for it to wither away so quickly and completely.

  113. But I want you to draw your attention here this morning to verse 22.

  114. Because Jesus gives us a very critical statement about this.

  115. Notice how Jesus responds to him.

  116. Verse 22,

  117. Jesus answering, saith unto them,

  118. Have faith in God.

  119. Have faith in God.

  120. You know, we know that faith is central to God's program.

  121. Everything that God has for us is centered around this concept of faith,

  122. this trusting.

  123. You know, think about what the Bible tells us.

  124. Hebrews chapter 11, verse 6 says this,

    Hebrews 11:6

  125. But without faith, it is impossible to please him.

  126. It is impossible to please him without faith.

  127. Faith is a critical element that we find.

  128. And when you look through the scripture,

  129. you'll find that faith did so many things.

  130. Not just a generic faith.

  131. Because we're going to look here this morning,

  132. sometimes people get in trouble and they get caught up in the faith.

  133. But I want you to understand,

  134. the focus of what your faith is upon is important.

  135. Why do you have faith?

  136. Faith itself, we can have faith in a lot of things.

  137. But faith, the object of our faith, is important.

  138. I want you to see here,

  139. Jesus points them to that fact that it's not,

  140. don't be fascinated or caught up in the tree.

  141. Understand that it's faith in God that's critical.

  142. And sometimes we can get caught up in the fanciful

  143. and the things that catch our attention.

  144. Instead of focusing upon the right direction,

  145. that's to focus upon God.

  146. But when you look at the scripture,

  147. there's many individuals that had miraculous things take place

  148. because of faith.

  149. You'll consider Joshua commanded the sun to stand still

  150. so Israel could defeat the Amorites.

  151. I mean, that took faith.

  152. Where was this faith?

  153. That was in God.

  154. We find Isaiah, in Isaiah 38,

  155. we find King Hezekiah was told he would die

  156. and he prayed and the Lord added 15 years

  157. because of his faith in God.

  158. We find in Abraham,

  159. there in Genesis chapter 22,

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  160. was told to sacrifice Isaac,

  161. his son of promise,

  162. and he obeyed by faith

  163. and God gave him a ram in his place.

  164. Joshua, we find in Joshua 14,

  165. we find an 85-year-old man by the name of Caleb,

  166. believed God for the power to defeat a mountain filled full of giants.

  167. God gave him the mountain.

  168. We find in a teenage boy named David there in 1 Samuel,

  169. by faith defeated a giant named Goliath.

  170. By faith he accomplished those things.

  171. God gave him the victory.

  172. Three young men in the book of Daniel there,

  173. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego believed God

  174. to keep them from the power of a pagan king

  175. in a fiery furnace.

  176. And God met them there in the furnace

  177. and protected them,

  178. not because of just faith,

  179. but their faith in God.

  180. What was added here is important

  181. because many times we could give many examples of faith

  182. and not just generic,

  183. but directed and specific focused faith in God.

  184. We need to trust God,

  185. the reality of it,

  186. the object of biblical faith.

  187. This is the object of biblical faith,

  188. is not just faith itself,

  189. it's not just hope itself,

  190. but it's in God.

  191. He is the one that gives hope

  192. when we trust Him.

  193. It's what He has done

  194. and what He can do.

  195. You know, we understand that faith

  196. is not blindly wishing something true.

  197. You know, sometimes people enter into that idea of faith,

  198. that faith is just something that,

  199. well, you're just hoping that to be.

  200. Well, faith has something more to it

  201. than just hopeful wishing

  202. or just being positive-minded.

  203. I want you to understand,

  204. faith is not just something that fascinates the mind.

  205. I mean, the disciples were fascinated

  206. by what happened to the tree.

  207. Sometimes things will happen

  208. and people get fascinated by it.

  209. And they'll even maybe give honor to God for something,

  210. but their faith misses the mark

  211. because the mark is not in what is fanciful

  212. or what is hopeful

  213. or what's wished for,

  214. but our faith needs to be in God,

  215. in who He is.

  216. Notice back here in Hebrews 11, verse 6,

    Hebrews 11:6

  217. notice what He tells us here.

  218. Without faith it is impossible to please Him,

  219. for he that cometh to God,

  220. notice it,

  221. you must believe that He is.

  222. Have faith in God.

  223. Believe that He is.

  224. And when we say to believe that He is,

  225. that doesn't just mean that He exists.

  226. You know, the reality is

  227. a lot of people will give acknowledgement to God.

  228. But their faith is not in God.

  229. Because in your faith is in God,

  230. there's some things you have faith in

  231. because Jesus is the foundation of faith

  232. must be in God.

  233. Our faith is not in His kingdom

  234. that's going to come.

  235. Our faith is not in the law.

  236. Our faith can't even be in our position,

  237. even like His disciples.

  238. Their faith couldn't be in the fact

  239. that Jesus made them a disciple.

  240. Their faith had to rest in God.

  241. Had to rest above those things.

  242. In something of more substance,

  243. the one that was behind all of it.

  244. Because simply it's being persuaded

  245. by who God is,

  246. His character,

  247. to have a deep, settled trust

  248. in who He is,

  249. what He says,

  250. and what He will do.

  251. Because we have to understand,

  252. we must have faith in His person.

  253. You know, not just acknowledgement

  254. that He exists,

  255. but who He is.

  256. That He is God.

  257. He is above all.

  258. You know, I want you to understand

  259. His person is there

  260. because He's personal with us.

  261. He wants to connect with us.

  262. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5, 7,

  263. to cast,

  264. casting all your cares upon Him,

  265. for He careth for you.

  266. That's a personal connection.

  267. It says who God is.

  268. He has a personality.

  269. He has something that you can connect with.

  270. He wants and invites you

  271. to bring those things.

  272. Think about Philippians 4,

  273. in verse 6,

  274. where it says,

  275. Be careful for nothing,

  276. but in everything,

  277. by prayer and supplication,

  278. with thanksgiving,

  279. let your requests remain known unto God.

  280. And the peace of God,

  281. which passes all understanding,

  282. shall keep your hearts and minds

  283. through Christ Jesus.

  284. You know,

  285. we need to know

  286. that we can trust His person,

  287. who He is.

  288. not just a generic God,

  289. but a specific God.

  290. But we can have that

  291. because we must have faith

  292. in His promises.

  293. Because of who He is as a person,

  294. we can have faith

  295. in His promises

  296. that He has made to us.

  297. To trust those things.

  298. Think about Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  299. Romans chapter 4,

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  300. here in verse 21,

  301. it says,

  302. and being what?

  303. Fully what?

  304. What?

  305. Is that next word?

  306. Persuaded.

  307. Fully persuaded.

  308. That has to do with our thinking.

  309. How we process it,

  310. creates a filter

  311. or a lens

  312. through which we see

  313. and how we understand.

  314. When you're fully persuaded

  315. in your mind,

  316. it's locked in.

  317. Have you ever noticed

  318. that somebody's

  319. fully persuaded about them?

  320. You just will almost give up

  321. arguing with them

  322. about anything?

  323. Or about that topic?

  324. Because if they're

  325. fully persuaded,

  326. man,

  327. there's nothing

  328. going to change their mind.

  329. God tells us

  330. we need to be

  331. fully persuaded

  332. because He had promised

  333. that He was able

  334. also to perform.

  335. He is able

  336. also to perform.

  337. Think about Hebrews chapter 6

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  338. in verse 18

  339. that says,

  340. by two immutable things

  341. in which it's impossible

  342. for God to lie.

  343. You know?

  344. To understand

  345. that God cannot lie.

  346. He will not lie to you.

  347. You know?

  348. We look at the world today.

  349. You know,

  350. whenever the elections

  351. come up,

  352. you can look at it

  353. another way.

  354. Oftentimes,

  355. it's the lying season.

  356. You know?

  357. There's more lies

  358. floating around right now

  359. about everything

  360. than you can shake a stick at.

  361. You know,

  362. especially at the age

  363. of social media,

  364. but I want you to understand

  365. when God said something

  366. in His description

  367. of somebody

  368. or you or me,

  369. God does not lie.

  370. God's promises are true.

  371. His application,

  372. His,

  373. what He tells us

  374. about the world,

  375. what He tells us

  376. about us as individuals,

  377. what He tells us

  378. is going to happen.

  379. It's going to be.

  380. We can trust

  381. what God has said.

  382. You know,

  383. Numbers chapter 23

    Numbers 23 chapter mention

  384. and verse 19

  385. says this,

  386. God is not a man

  387. that He should lie,

  388. neither the Son of Man

  389. that He should repent.

  390. Hath He said

  391. and shall He not do it?

  392. Or hath He spoken

  393. and shall He not make it good?

  394. You know,

  395. He's asking questions

  396. for the children of Israel

  397. who had just come out of Egypt.

  398. God made promises to them

  399. and He said,

  400. hey,

  401. what did you guys just see?

  402. What did you just see

  403. and understand

  404. and experience?

  405. Did I not tell you

  406. this was going to happen

  407. and did it not happen?

  408. He wants us to know

  409. that we must have faith

  410. in His promises,

  411. but we need to have faith

  412. also in His power

  413. because, you know,

  414. we know very quickly

  415. that promises

  416. are easily made.

  417. You know,

  418. even as people,

  419. sometimes we make promises

  420. even with good intentions.

  421. You know,

  422. I think we can all look back

  423. on our life at some point

  424. and say,

  425. I made a promise

  426. that I made with good intentions

  427. but I couldn't fulfill it.

  428. There were other things

  429. that I could not control

  430. that impacted my ability

  431. to fulfill a promise.

  432. But I want you to understand

  433. when it comes to God,

  434. He has the power

  435. to fulfill them.

  436. That's the difference

  437. in God's promise

  438. over any other promise

  439. you'll get.

  440. God says,

  441. when I promise it,

  442. I have the ability

  443. to perform it.

  444. I have what it takes.

  445. You know,

  446. think about Jeremiah 32.

  447. Jeremiah 32 says,

  448. Oh Lord God,

  449. behold,

  450. thou hast made the heaven

  451. and the earth

  452. by thy great power

  453. and stretched out arm.

  454. Notice this,

  455. there is nothing

  456. too hard for thee.

  457. Nothing too hard for God.

  458. Luke chapter 1 verse 37

    Luke 1:37

  459. makes a very simple statement,

  460. for with God

  461. nothing shall be impossible.

  462. When it comes to faith in God,

  463. we need to trust

  464. His eternal plan.

  465. We need to trust

  466. His purposes.

  467. You know,

  468. God has a purpose

  469. in what He's doing.

  470. Often times,

  471. we get uncomfortable

  472. with God's purpose,

  473. but God has a purpose

  474. and a plan

  475. that He has established

  476. and set out.

  477. He has it the way

  478. He's going to do it.

  479. And when it comes

  480. to faith in God,

  481. we need to trust

  482. His eternal plan,

  483. a plan that He will

  484. accomplish.

  485. If He is a,

  486. we can trust His person,

  487. we can trust His promises,

  488. we can trust His power,

  489. we can trust His purposes.

  490. You know,

  491. think about Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  492. It's made this morning.

  493. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  494. and verse 9

  495. tells us this.

  496. It says,

  497. Having made known unto us

  498. the mystery of His will.

  499. God doesn't hide His will from us.

  500. He reveals His will to us.

  501. He wants us to know

  502. that He is accomplishing

  503. what He said

  504. He was going to do.

  505. You ever notice

  506. it's real easy

  507. to claim something

  508. if nobody knows

  509. what you started out with?

  510. You know,

  511. I promised that years ago.

  512. Who heard you?

  513. Nobody.

  514. Well, how do you know?

  515. God tells us,

  516. Hey, here's the plan.

  517. Here's the purpose.

  518. I promised these things

  519. to be so.

  520. Now you can examine it.

  521. Now you can trust it.

  522. He says,

  523. According to His good pleasure,

  524. which He hath purposed

  525. in Himself,

  526. that in the dispensation

  527. of the fullness of times

  528. He might gather together

  529. in one

  530. all things in Christ

  531. which are in heaven

  532. or which are on earth

  533. even in Him,

  534. in whom also

  535. we have attained

  536. an inheritance

  537. being predestined

  538. according to the purpose

  539. of Him

  540. who worketh all things

  541. after the counsel

  542. of His own will.

  543. I want you to understand

  544. God has declared

  545. some very simple promises.

  546. This verse applies

  547. very directly

  548. to your salvation

  549. in this way.

  550. Your salvation,

  551. God says,

  552. Whosoever shall call

  553. upon the name

  554. of the Lord,

  555. whoever trusts me

  556. as Savior,

  557. will be with Him.

  558. That's what God

  559. predetermined.

  560. God said,

  561. I have a plan

  562. and a way

  563. and if they make

  564. that choice,

  565. I have predetermined

  566. I'm going to fulfill it.

  567. I'm going to take care of it.

  568. It's all upon me.

  569. You know,

  570. think about

  571. Proverbs chapter 19.

    Proverbs 19 chapter mention

  572. Proverbs chapter 19

    Proverbs 19 chapter mention

  573. in verse 21

  574. tells us this,

  575. There are many devices

  576. in a man's heart.

  577. Nevertheless,

  578. the counsel of the Lord

  579. that shall stand.

  580. God is the one

  581. that has established

  582. those things

  583. because consider

  584. His will is very clear

  585. within the Scripture.

  586. God is not willing

  587. that any should perish,

  588. that all should come

  589. to repentance.

  590. You know,

  591. God makes some very clear

  592. statements about His will.

  593. His desire

  594. and His plan

  595. and His provision

  596. took care of everything

  597. we need

  598. to have a relationship

  599. with Him

  600. if we trust

  601. in God.

  602. If our faith

  603. is in God,

  604. not in church,

  605. not in baptism,

  606. not in what somebody

  607. told you,

  608. our faith must be

  609. in God,

  610. must be in what

  611. Christ has done,

  612. the one that came

  613. and died for our sin.

  614. It has to be

  615. in that alone.

  616. Because we see here,

  617. notice what He tells them

  618. in verse 23.

  619. He makes that declarative

  620. statement of faith

  621. in God.

  622. And then Jesus says,

  623. For verily I say unto you,

  624. that whoso shall say

  625. unto this mountain,

  626. Be thou removed,

  627. and be thou cast

  628. into the sea,

  629. and shall not doubt

  630. in His heart,

  631. but shall believe

  632. that those things

  633. which He saith

  634. shall come to pass,

  635. He shall have

  636. whatsoever He saith.

  637. He saith.

  638. Now I want you

  639. to break these down

  640. a little bit

  641. because God tells us

  642. we have opportunities

  643. of faith.

  644. What are we going

  645. to trust Him in?

  646. What are we going

  647. to ask Him for?

  648. Our faith functions

  649. when we trust God

  650. and that He's going

  651. to do that which is

  652. often what we see

  653. as impossible.

  654. Those things that we look

  655. at and say are impossible

  656. because I want you

  657. to get the picture here

  658. because remember

  659. Jesus is coming down

  660. to the Mount of Olives

  661. when He's describing,

  662. telling the disciples this.

  663. So they're coming down

  664. from the mount

  665. and can you imagine

  666. Jesus when He said,

  667. Hey, this,

  668. if you ask the Lord,

  669. this mountain,

  670. He's looking at the

  671. Mount of Olives

  672. and cast into the sea

  673. which would have been

  674. the Dead Sea.

  675. that was a big thing

  676. in the disciples' minds.

  677. They could vividly

  678. see the picture.

  679. They're thinking,

  680. this is impossible.

  681. The point isn't

  682. the moving of the mountain.

  683. Jesus is making

  684. a point here

  685. that reveals to them

  686. that true faith in God

  687. will change insurmountable

  688. obstacles in your life.

  689. Faith in God

  690. will move things

  691. that we think

  692. are impossible.

  693. impossible.

  694. They may be impossible

  695. to us

  696. but they are possible

  697. with God.

  698. Let me give you

  699. an example.

  700. Have you ever

  701. considered that sometimes

  702. we either look at somebody

  703. or maybe even yourself,

  704. you've had this thought

  705. that I am so lost,

  706. so far away from God,

  707. God can't save me.

  708. You know what?

  709. God says,

  710. hold on because

  711. I can.

  712. Amen.

  713. What we think

  714. is impossible,

  715. God says,

  716. I can.

  717. I can take a sinner

  718. and turn him

  719. into a saint.

  720. God can do

  721. the impossible.

  722. We can look at somebody

  723. and say,

  724. that's a lost cause

  725. and God says

  726. if they trust me,

  727. it can be totally different.

  728. You think about

  729. sometimes we have

  730. a great need

  731. that appears

  732. that could never

  733. be met.

  734. You know,

  735. sometimes we have

  736. situations in life

  737. that say,

  738. Lord,

  739. I don't know

  740. how this is going

  741. to happen.

  742. I don't know

  743. how this is going

  744. to be overcome.

  745. I don't even have

  746. any idea

  747. of how this could

  748. even change around

  749. or turn around.

  750. And Jesus is telling

  751. the disciples,

  752. have faith in God.

  753. Have faith in God.

  754. I guarantee you

  755. that Shadrach,

  756. Meshach,

  757. and Abednego

  758. took a lot of faith

  759. to say,

  760. okay,

  761. in the furnace we go.

  762. Because when we read

  763. those Old Testament stories,

  764. we get to look back

  765. at what happened.

  766. They didn't know

  767. what was going to happen.

  768. They had no idea

  769. what God was going to do.

  770. They didn't look

  771. at the king

  772. and say,

  773. you throw us in there

  774. and Jesus will save us.

  775. That wasn't their attitude.

  776. Their attitude was,

  777. very simply,

  778. we trust God

  779. over everything else.

  780. And God changed

  781. the impossible.

  782. Some problems

  783. seem so big

  784. it appears

  785. they could never

  786. be overcome.

  787. But God says,

  788. I can.

  789. God changes

  790. the impossible

  791. to the possible.

  792. Because of His

  793. promise,

  794. and faith in God

  795. is built upon

  796. the promises

  797. found in His Word.

  798. He allows us

  799. to believe

  800. God in the impossible.

  801. Just as it was

  802. impossible

  803. for you and I

  804. to be saved.

  805. You know,

  806. there's not a single

  807. person that's possible

  808. to be saved

  809. of their own accord.

  810. not a one of us.

  811. It was God

  812. that made it possible.

  813. It was God

  814. who changed things.

  815. Look over at

  816. 1 Timothy for a moment.

  817. 1 Timothy chapter 2.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  818. Look here at verse 3.

  819. It says,

  820. For this is good

  821. and acceptable

  822. in the sight

  823. of God our Savior

  824. who will have

  825. all men to be saved

  826. and come unto

  827. the knowledge

  828. of the truth.

  829. For there is

  830. one God

  831. and one mediator

  832. between God

  833. and men,

  834. the man Christ Jesus

  835. who gave Himself

  836. a ransom for all

  837. to be testified

  838. in due time.

  839. He made it

  840. very clear.

  841. He made it

  842. proclaimed

  843. that the impossible

  844. is possible.

  845. But it's not

  846. possible by a

  847. generic faith.

  848. You know,

  849. oftentimes we have

  850. a generation today

  851. that reads this passage

  852. and they say,

  853. Well,

  854. this is a blank check

  855. for me.

  856. One thing we have

  857. to always keep in mind

  858. that the Bible

  859. never contradicts itself.

  860. And the context here,

  861. God says,

  862. You trust me

  863. and I can do

  864. the impossible things

  865. in your life

  866. that need to be accomplished

  867. because it's a specific faith

  868. in the promise

  869. that God made.

  870. When you call upon Him

  871. to save you,

  872. you're trusting God

  873. in a specific promise

  874. that He made.

  875. That's how you're saved

  876. is trusting God

  877. for a very specific promise.

  878. That promise is

  879. that He,

  880. when you call upon Him,

  881. that calling isn't just

  882. recognizing that

  883. He's present.

  884. It's acknowledging

  885. that you are the one

  886. that could do nothing

  887. and He is the one

  888. that has done everything

  889. by shedding His blood

  890. on the cross

  891. for your sin.

  892. God says,

  893. If you trust Him,

  894. if you call upon Him

  895. to be your Savior

  896. to cleanse you from sin,

  897. He says,

  898. I will.

  899. Jesus is clear about faith

  900. as believing

  901. and not doubting.

  902. It's not wavering

  903. in confidence

  904. that God will do

  905. what He promised.

  906. But just to be clear here,

  907. what I want to talk

  908. for a moment,

  909. this fact that faith

  910. is not a blank check

  911. because some think,

  912. well,

  913. if I have faith,

  914. then God's got to do it.

  915. That's not the way

  916. this works.

  917. Faith is always,

  918. faith in God

  919. is always connected

  920. to the promises of God.

  921. They don't separate.

  922. They're built upon

  923. His promises.

  924. It's built upon

  925. what He has declared.

  926. It's founded upon

  927. the Word of God.

  928. Jesus always points

  929. to that reality

  930. for us

  931. and we understand

  932. that very clearly.

  933. Notice in the Gospel of John,

  934. look over to John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  935. for a moment.

  936. John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  937. we find over here,

  938. John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  939. look at verse 13.

  940. It says,

  941. whatsoever ye shall ask

  942. in my name

  943. will I do

  944. that the Father

  945. may be glorified

  946. in the Son

  947. and if ye shall ask

  948. anything in my name,

  949. I will do it.

  950. He promises

  951. He's going to accomplish it

  952. if we ask

  953. according to His will

  954. to do those things.

  955. His will

  956. is important

  957. that's connected

  958. in this

  959. here this morning.

  960. But I want you

  961. to see here

  962. because faith

  963. has some challenges.

  964. You know that statement

  965. that Jesus made,

  966. have faith in God.

  967. In a sense,

  968. sometimes we treat it

  969. like a platitude.

  970. Yes I do,

  971. but

  972. there's some obstacles

  973. to actually trusting God.

  974. and we'll notice

  975. what Jesus reveals

  976. to His disciples

  977. because faith in God

  978. can do the impossible,

  979. but faith can be hindered

  980. by things about us.

  981. There are many things

  982. that can hinder our prayers

  983. and we'll quickly look

  984. at three here this morning

  985. that Jesus makes

  986. direct mention of.

  987. Things that hinder

  988. those things coming to pass.

  989. Because notice here

  990. what it says in verse 23.

  991. He says,

  992. Verily I say unto you

  993. that to whosoever

  994. shall say unto this mountain

  995. thou shalt be removed

  996. and be thou cast into the sea.

  997. Now notice this,

  998. and shall not doubt

  999. in his heart.

  1000. Doubt.

  1001. This goes back

1002. to what we talked about earlier

1003. when it comes to unbelief.

  1004. Remember when Jesus

  1005. went into different villages

  1006. there was things

  1007. He did not do,

  1008. there was miracles

  1009. that were not performed

  1010. and what did Jesus

  1011. accredit it to?

  1012. Unbelief.

  1013. Unbelief.

  1014. They were refusing

  1015. to recognize

  1016. who God is,

  1017. to trust Him.

  1018. Because doubt

  1019. is divided into one's,

  1020. is dividing one's

  1021. or to draw back.

  1022. You know,

1023. when we pray with doubt

  1024. we're drawing back

  1025. from God's Word

  1026. and His promises.

  1027. You know,

  1028. ultimately really

  1029. doubt questions

  1030. God's character.

  1031. I'll tell you

  1032. to look over

1033. in the book of James

  1034. this morning.

  1035. James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  1036. Notice what James

  1037. tells us

  1038. in James 1.

  1039. He says,

  1040. But let him ask

  1041. in faith

  1042. nothing wavering.

  1043. For he that wavereth

  1044. is like a wave

  1045. of the sea

  1046. driven with the wind

  1047. and tossed.

  1048. For let not

  1049. think that he shall

  1050. receive anything

  1051. of the Lord.

  1052. Now I want you

  1053. to understand

  1054. that James

  1055. makes it clear

  1056. that we can doubt,

  1057. we can know,

  1058. but we have,

  1059. we hold back

  1060. to say,

  1061. God says He can,

  1062. but I really

  1063. don't believe He can.

  1064. You know,

  1065. that's a real thing

  1066. for us,

  1067. isn't it?

  1068. just like anything

  1069. else in life,

  1070. you can know

  1071. something up here,

  1072. but to actually

  1073. put the confidence

  1074. out in it

  1075. is a different thing.

  1076. To actually put

  1077. a trust in it

  1078. to say,

  1079. I'm going to

  1080. extend myself

  1081. out beyond

  1082. where I am

  1083. because I trust

  1084. God's going to

  1085. make the difference.

  1086. unbelief.

  1087. Notice verse 24,

  1088. it says,

  1089. therefore,

  1090. I say unto you,

  1091. whatsoever things

  1092. ye desire

  1093. when you pray,

  1094. believe that you

  1095. receive them

  1096. and ye

  1097. shall have them.

  1098. Now this word

  1099. we're going to

  1100. look at here

  1101. is desire.

  1102. What things

  1103. ye desire?

  1104. You know,

  1105. because we ought

  1106. to desire

  1107. the right things

  1108. when we pray.

  1109. Because the Bible

  1110. tells us we can

  1111. desire the wrong

  1112. things when we pray.

  1113. We can desire

  1114. things contrary

1115. to the word of God.

  1116. Because God's

  1117. going to answer

  1118. prayer when we

  1119. trust Him

  1120. because our prayers

  1121. need to be built

  1122. upon His what?

  1123. His promises.

  1124. Upon His word

1125. and what He has said.

  1126. Notice what it

  1127. tells us here

  1128. that our prayers

  1129. need to be in

  1130. alignment with

  1131. God's will.

  1132. Look over in

  1133. 1 John chapter 5.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  1134. 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  1135. and verse 14

  1136. tells us this

  1137. and this is the

  1138. confidence that

  1139. we have in Him

  1140. that if we ask

  1141. anything according

  1142. to what?

  1143. His will

  1144. He heareth us.

  1145. And if we know

  1146. that He hear us

  1147. whatsoever we ask

  1148. we know that we

  1149. have a petition

  1150. that we desire

  1151. of Him.

  1152. In other words

  1153. when our desire

1154. is to see His will

  1155. and His purpose

  1156. fulfilled

  1157. He promises

  1158. to answer.

  1159. You know,

  1160. think about

  1161. Joshua and Caleb

  1162. and all the

  1163. others we mentioned

  1164. who received

  1165. big answers

  1166. to their prayer

  1167. of faith

  1168. did so

  1169. because they

  1170. were asking

  1171. for things

  1172. that God

  1173. had already

  1174. promised them

  1175. in His word.

  1176. God had already

  1177. promised Caleb

  1178. to take the

  1179. mountain years

  1180. earlier.

  1181. He promised it

  1182. to him years

  1183. earlier and Caleb

  1184. says,

  1185. God,

  1186. I'm calling

  1187. upon your promise

  1188. to fulfill it.

  1189. When the sun

  1190. stood still

  1191. that day for

  1192. Joshua

  1193. and the children

  1194. of Israel

  1195. it stood still

  1196. because Joshua

  1197. was calling

  1198. upon God's promise

  1199. to deliver them

  1200. and to conquer

  1201. the land.

  1202. He was giving

  1203. them something

  1204. of substance.

  1205. You know,

  1206. does God

  1207. ever answer

  1208. the prayers

  1209. of His children

  1210. when they ask

  1211. for things

  1212. that He

  1213. hasn't

  1214. explicitly

  1215. promised?

  1216. Yes.

  1217. Because God

  1218. understands

  1219. that there are

  1220. certain things

  1221. we do need.

  1222. I mean,

  1223. He's given us

  1224. generic promises

  1225. that He'll never

  1226. leave us

  1227. or forsake us.

  1228. He promises

  1229. to take care

  1230. of our daily

  1231. needs.

  1232. But,

  1233. you know,

  1234. sometimes we can

  1235. ask for some

  1236. specific things

  1237. that are still

  1238. according to

  1239. God's will.

  1240. Things that will

  1241. help us

  1242. or benefit us.

  1243. You might say

  1244. those are blessings

  1245. that God gives

  1246. to you.

  1247. But those blessings

  1248. and those things

  1249. will never go

  1250. in counter

  1251. to His will.

  1252. They'll always

  1253. be a blessing

  1254. because of His will.

  1255. Something that

  1256. He's given to you

  1257. that benefits

  1258. or encourages

  1259. you or

  1260. strengthens you

  1261. and your faith

  1262. can move forward.

  1263. But look at

  1264. verse 25

  1265. and 26.

  1266. This is another

  1267. interesting one

  1268. as you think

  1269. about Jesus.

  1270. He starts out,

  1271. they're talking

  1272. about a fig tree

  1273. and mountains

  1274. moving into the sea

  1275. and He turns

  1276. this whole conversation

  1277. around to faith

  1278. in God

  1279. and trusting Him

  1280. above everything else.

  1281. Verse 25 and 26

  1282. point something out

  1283. where I think

  1284. a lot of times

  1285. we struggle

  1286. with faith.

  1287. And that's

  1288. in the area

  1289. of forgiveness.

  1290. We struggle

  1291. in trusting God

  1292. when we say

  1293. we're going to

  1294. forgive.

  1295. God makes promises

  1296. associated.

  1297. Notice what He

  1298. tells us here.

  1299. This idea of

  1300. unforgiveness.

  1301. Look here,

  1302. and when you

  1303. stand praying

  1304. forgive.

  1305. Forgive.

  1306. If you have

  1307. ought against

  1308. any.

  1309. That's a pretty

  1310. generic statement.

  1311. If you have

  1312. ought against

  1313. anybody,

  1314. if there's a

  1315. problem that you

  1316. haven't forgiven

  1317. or that you

  1318. haven't dealt

  1319. with,

  1320. Jesus says

  1321. it hinders

  1322. your prayers

  1323. when you don't

  1324. trust Him

  1325. to say,

  1326. I can forgive

  1327. them because

  1328. God has forgiven

  1329. me.

  1330. If God

  1331. can forgive

  1332. me,

  1333. I'd be able

  1334. to forgive

  1335. somebody else.

  1336. But we

  1337. struggle with

  1338. forgiveness,

  1339. don't we?

  1340. Jesus tells

  1341. the disciples,

  1342. because there's

  1343. going to be

  1344. some things

  1345. happen.

  1346. Often we

  1347. wonder,

  1348. why does

  1349. Jesus focus

  1350. on forgiveness?

  1351. this?

  1352. When you

  1353. look and read

  1354. about what

  1355. happened to

  1356. the apostles

  1357. here a little

  1358. later in the

  1359. scripture,

  1360. they had to

  1361. offer a lot

  1362. of forgiveness

  1363. to people

  1364. for things

  1365. that they

  1366. did.

  1367. Think about

  1368. Peter and

  1369. John,

  1370. they were

  1371. beaten,

  1372. put in

  1373. prison.

  1374. They were

  1375. beaten,

  1376. put in

  1377. prison.

  1378. John had

  1379. his brother

  1380. killed by

  1381. getting his

  1382. head chopped

  1383. off.

  1384. That's

  1385. pretty

  1386. personal.

  1387. And

  1388. Jesus was

  1389. telling them

  1390. it doesn't

  1391. matter what's

  1392. happening now

  1393. or what's

  1394. happening later.

  1395. You need to

  1396. forgive just

  1397. as I forgave

  1398. you.

  1399. But that's a

  1400. real struggle

  1401. because he

  1402. expects us to

  1403. forgive.

  1404. forgive.

  1405. Notice in

  1406. verse 26

  1407. he says,

  1408. if you do

  1409. not forgive

  1410. neither will

  1411. your Father

  1412. which is in

  1413. heaven forgive

  1414. your trespasses.

  1415. In other

  1416. words, I want

  1417. you to

  1418. understand here,

  1419. we'll talk

  1420. about this

  1421. a little bit

  1422. more in

  1423. just a

  1424. moment,

  1425. but I

  1426. want you

  1427. to understand

  1428. the importance

  1429. of forgiveness.

  1430. Look over in

  1431. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1432. 4 and verse

  1433. 32.

  1434. Ephesians 4

  1435. 32 tells us

  1436. this, it

  1437. says,

  1438. be kind

  1439. one to

  1440. another,

  1441. tenderhearted,

  1442. forgiving one

  1443. another,

  1444. for even as

  1445. God for

  1446. Christ's

  1447. sake hath

  1448. forgiven

  1449. you.

  1450. You know,

  1451. the right

  1452. perspective in

  1453. our eyes when

  1454. we understand

  1455. that God

  1456. offered us

  1457. a way of

  1458. forgiveness,

  1459. but we

  1460. didn't merit

  1461. the forgiveness.

  1462. Oftentimes we

  1463. hold up our

  1464. forgiveness because

  1465. we look and

  1466. say that person

  1467. doesn't merit

  1468. it.

  1469. and God

  1470. says you

  1471. didn't either,

  1472. but I

  1473. gave it

  1474. anyway.

  1475. The

  1476. necessity

  1477. of forgiveness,

  1478. that

  1479. unforgiveness,

  1480. just as

  1481. faith enables

  1482. our prayers,

  1483. unforgiveness

  1484. is a barrier

  1485. to them.

  1486. You say,

  1487. why is that?

  1488. Because

  1489. unforgiving

  1490. spirits puts

  1491. us at odds

  1492. with the

  1493. Lord.

  1494. Now what

  1495. Jesus is

  1496. talking about

  1497. here is

  1498. twofold,

  1499. because you

  1500. got to

  1501. understand his

  1502. audience is

  1503. the first

  1504. thing.

  1505. Whenever you

  1506. read the

  1507. scripture,

  1508. it's like,

  1509. who is he

  1510. saying this

  1511. to?

  1512. He's saying

  1513. this to his

  1514. disciples,

  1515. those that

  1516. have already

  1517. trusted him,

  1518. those that

  1519. have been

  1520. set apart

  1521. to serve

  1522. him.

  1523. He's telling

  1524. them that,

  1525. hey,

  1526. if you

  1527. don't forgive,

  1528. it's going

  1529. to hinder

  1530. our relationship.

  1531. fellowship.

  1532. He's not

  1533. talking about

  1534. losing salvation,

  1535. he's talking

  1536. about hindering

  1537. fellowship with

  1538. one another.

  1539. God's

  1540. God's

  1541. fellowship with

  1542. God after

  1543. salvation.

  1544. Unforgiveness is

  1545. a hindrance,

  1546. and we can hold

  1547. on to those

  1548. things.

  1549. When we

  1550. possess an

  1551. unforgiving

  1552. spirit,

  1553. our prayers

  1554. will be

  1555. hindered,

  1556. and God's

  1557. forgiveness will

  1558. not be realized

  1559. in our daily

  1560. walk with

  1561. him.

  1562. You know,

  1563. this morning

  1564. we should

  1565. consider the

  1566. important nature

  1567. of faith

  1568. when it comes

  1569. to the things

  1570. of God.

  1571. Because Jesus

  1572. makes it clear,

  1573. have faith

  1574. in God.

  1575. Not in your

  1576. abilities,

  1577. not in what

  1578. somebody else

  1579. has done,

  1580. have faith

  1581. in him.

  1582. To trust

  1583. him.

  1584. God is the

  1585. one that

  1586. everything else

  1587. submits to.

  1588. You know,

  1589. the focus of

  1590. our faith

  1591. not only

  1592. gives us

  1593. a direction,

  1594. but connects

  1595. us with the

  1596. one that

  1597. supplies the

  1598. needs along

  1599. the way.

  1600. This morning,

  1601. how is your

  1602. faith?

  1603. How is your

  1604. faith today?

  1605. Because

  1606. oftentimes we

  1607. come in with

  1608. mountains that

  1609. need to be

  1610. moved in our

  1611. lives.

  1612. That you look

  1613. at and say,

  1614. God, I don't

  1615. know how that's

  1616. going to happen.

  1617. And Jesus

  1618. says,

  1619. trust me.

  1620. Follow my

  1621. promises,

  1622. claim my

  1623. promises,

  1624. and I will

  1625. fulfill my

  1626. promises.

  1627. Are there

  1628. mountains that

  1629. need to be

  1630. moved?

  1631. Are you

  1632. seeking his

  1633. will in your

  1634. life?

  1635. Do you

  1636. trust him to

  1637. do what he

  1638. promises to

  1639. do?

  1640. Because you

  1641. can know

  1642. what it

  1643. says, but

  1644. there's

  1645. another to

  1646. trust it.

  1647. Because trust

  1648. involves stretching

  1649. out to say,

  1650. I think God,

  1651. it's not just

  1652. thinking that

  1653. God's going to

  1654. do it, it's

  1655. knowing God

  1656. is going to

  1657. fulfill after

  1658. you step

  1659. out.

  1660. Faith is an

  1661. element of

  1662. saying, I'm

  1663. going someplace

  1664. that I'm not

  1665. sure of, but

  1666. I'm trusting in

  1667. the one that

  1668. is sure.

  1669. Because I

  1670. know who he

  1671. is and what

  1672. he can do.

  1673. It's the

  1674. substance of

  1675. our faith.

  1676. Today we

  1677. need to

  1678. understand the

  1679. importance of

  1680. humbling

  1681. ourselves when

  1682. we trust him

  1683. to his will

  1684. and not

  1685. ours.

  1686. You know,

  1687. maybe it's a

  1688. simple today to

  1689. say I need to

  1690. call upon the

  1691. Savior.

  1692. There's never

  1693. been a time and

  1694. a place where I

  1695. could look and

  1696. see that that's

  1697. when I called

  1698. upon him.

  1699. This is the

  1700. moment I

  1701. trusted God, I

  1702. trusted Christ as

  1703. my Savior.

  1704. Because that

  1705. happens in a

  1706. moment.

  1707. It happens at a

  1708. specific place at a

  1709. specific time.

  1710. If you can't see

  1711. that in your

  1712. mind, that's

  1713. something you

  1714. need to deal

  1715. with before the

  1716. Lord.

  1717. If that's the

  1718. case, I

  1719. encourage you to

  1720. trust him today.

  1721. But as the

  1722. heads are bowed

  1723. and eyes are

  1724. closed this

  1725. morning,

  1726. maybe there's

  1727. some things when

  1728. it comes in

  1729. regarding to your

  1730. faith in God

  1731. this morning.

  1732. maybe there's

  1733. some mountains,

  1734. maybe there's

  1735. some obstacles,

  1736. maybe there's

  1737. some things that

  1738. you're just like,

  1739. Lord, I don't

  1740. understand what's

  1741. going on.

  1742. I don't

  1743. understand why

  1744. this is happening.

  1745. But Lord, I'm

  1746. going to seek you

  1747. and your will,

  1748. Lord, I'm going

  1749. to trust you as

  1750. we walk through

  1751. those things day

  1752. by day.

  1753. Is that your

  1754. need today?

  1755. Heavenly

  1756. Fathers, we

  1757. come before you

  1758. this morning.

  1759. Lord, we just

  1760. thank you and

  1761. praise you for

  1762. your word and

  1763. for your promises,

  1764. just for who you

  1765. are, Lord, that we

  1766. can trust you in

  1767. all areas of our

  1768. life.

  1769. And Lord, we pray

  1770. just have your hand

  1771. upon each one here

  1772. today.

  1773. Lord, you know the

  1774. needs, you know the

  1775. specifics of each

  1776. life.

  1777. Lord, there's no

  1778. hiding those

  1779. things from you.

  1780. Lord, if there's

  1781. one here today that

  1782. doesn't know you as

  1783. Savior, that today

  1784. would be the day

  1785. they would call upon

  1786. you.

  1787. But Lord, if there's

  1788. other needs, that it

1789. might be the day that

  1790. they say, I'm going

1791. to put all my eggs

  1792. in God's basket.

  1793. I'm going to trust

  1794. him in everything

  1795. moving forward.

  1796. And Lord, we just

1797. ask it all in your

  1798. precious name, Lord,

  1799. as the piano plays,

  1800. that you'd work upon

  1801. hearts and lives here

  1802. today.

  1803. In Jesus' name,

  1804. amen.

  1805. What about you

  1806. today?

  1807. Amen.
