  1. towards her groom, towards her husband.

  2. And the statement is this, and this is my friend.

  3. And this is my friend.

  4. You know, the title of the next few weeks we're going to be looking at here

  5. is married but not best friends.

  6. You know, because we're going to see here the importance of it

  7. because can you honestly say that your spouse is your friend?

  8. You know, if you're married, you ought to be able to look at your spouse

  9. and say that person is my friend.

  10. Friendship is a foundational element of marriage.

  11. If you're going to spend that much time with somebody,

  12. I'll give you a little clue, you'd better like them.

  13. You know, you ought to enjoy hanging out with them

  14. because when it comes to marriage

  15. and our spouse ought to be your best friend

  16. because God joins two into one flesh.

  17. That means much more than just becoming lovers.

  18. It means joining our hearts, joining our dreams, joining our thoughts.

  19. It means being best friends.

  20. You know, take a look over into the New Testament for a moment.

  21. Look over to Titus chapter 2.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  22. Titus chapter 2, down here in verse 4.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  23. Titus chapter 2 and verse 4.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  24. And we're going to look here because notice what the Apostle Paul encourages

  25. the older women to teach the younger women.

  26. Because that's really the other part of God's process

  27. is those with experience

  28. help those who are inexperienced to get experience

  29. and to do the right things that are going to benefit them.

  30. And we're going to see here, notice what it says,

  31. that they may teach the young women to be sober.

  32. That's to think right.

  33. Because if you're not thinking right about marriage,

  34. it's going to hinder the marriage.

  35. But notice that next phrase we're going to look at,

  36. to love their husbands and to love their children.

  37. Now the word love here is philandros, which means friendship.

  38. This is not an erotic type of love.

  39. It's not anything like that.

  40. It's a friendship type love to teach the women to love,

  41. to be friends with their husbands.

  42. This is important that we're going to look at,

  43. this essential building block,

  44. because today there's a lot of marriages fail

  45. because the husband and wife fail to be friends.

  46. Or they may have once been friends

  47. and they let that friendship slip away.

  48. And so we need to grab a hold of the importance of this,

  49. those things that connect.

  50. And we're going to see this because this is,

  51. we're not talking about romantic love,

  52. but a friendship kind of love.

  53. You might say that we could,

  54. the Bible translators could have said this,

  55. wives be friends with your husbands.

  56. You know?

  57. To be friends with them because it's important.

  58. You know?

  59. Because when you understand that connection,

  60. Ephesians 5 verse 29 tells us this.

    Ephesians 5:29

  61. It says,

  62. So no man ever yet hateth his own flesh,

  63. but nourisheth it and cherisheth it,

  64. even as the Lord, the church.

  65. You know, the word cherish here means to delight.

  66. Cherish means to delight in,

  67. to hold one another dear.

  68. You know?

  69. Literally to keep,

  70. to hold closely to keep warm.

  71. You know?

  72. Your spouse ought to be somebody

  73. that you keep warm with.

  74. That's literally what the Bible's telling us here.

  75. In this, it's talking about friendship.

  76. Now, oftentimes in today's society,

  77. there's people who say,

  78. well, I can't marry somebody I'm friends with.

  79. That's a wrong thinking.

  80. Because if you can't be good friends,

  81. you can't be married.

  82. At least you're not going to be married very long.

  83. Because there's going to be a problem come up.

  84. There's going to be some issues that come up in the relationship

  85. because you don't have that friendship

  86. and that foundation that's built.

  87. You know, I want you to understand,

  88. marriage is the highest level of relationship

  89. created by God between human beings.

  90. Sometimes today people say it's the mother-child.

  91. I tell you, God created husband and wife first.

  92. The best thing, ladies, you can do for your children

  93. is to love your husband and your husband to love you.

  94. That's the greatest thing you can do for your children.

  95. Because if you two together love your children,

  96. they'll have what they need.

  97. When they see a strong relationship in their parents,

  98. you know, that high level of relationship,

  99. so the friendship ought to reach its very zenith

  100. in the context of a marriage relationship.

  101. You know, but oftentimes today,

  102. I want you to understand,

  103. and we're going to talk to ladies and men here today,

  104. but ladies, sometimes it's easy

  105. for you to be drawn away

  106. from a relationship with your husband.

  107. Ladies, I want to encourage you

  108. that no relationship you have with any other person

  109. should come as close to the relationship

  110. you have with your husband.

  111. Not even your children,

  112. not another lady,

  113. and certainly not another man.

  114. You need to guard those things.

  115. Men, the same thing is for us.

  116. There ought to be no buddy that supersedes your wife.

  117. There ought to be no co-worker

  118. that supersedes your wife.

  119. There ought to be no hunting partner

  120. or no secret treehouse fort buddy

  121. or whatever place you want to put them.

  122. I mean, nothing else should hinder that relationship

  123. because God has joined you together.

  124. You are put together.

  125. You know, couples ought to be best friends.

  126. It's by no means a sure thing, though,

  127. because all of us quickly learn in life

  128. friendships don't happen by accident.

  129. Friendships that are maintained take work.

  130. They take effort.

  131. They take things to be involved.

  132. You know, when we understand

  133. that just because you made vows to one another,

  134. you know, just because you trade rings with one another,

  135. you know, just because somebody declared you

  136. a husband and wife doesn't make you friends.

  137. I want you to understand that matter of fact,

  138. I believe true friendship is often strangely absent

  139. from a lot of marriages today.

  140. And it causes severe problems with not only within the marriage,

  141. but also our culture.

  142. Because they're thinking about marriage is a problem.

  143. Because remember, remember what it says in Song of Solomon?

  144. This is my friend.

  145. She was speaking of her husband.

  146. She knew that that was a place of friendship,

  147. a place of security.

  148. You know, when we understand,

  149. we can cultivate a wonderful friendship within our marriage.

  150. You know, there's many, many reasons

  151. why marriages lack friendship.

  152. You know, friendship is often lacked.

  153. And this morning, we're going to look at the first one

  154. as we go through this here this morning,

  155. because we're going to look at this for a few weeks,

  156. because there's a lot to cover in this.

  157. But I think it'll be beneficial for you.

  158. You know, when we understand that whether you're young or old,

  159. married or single or even widowed,

  160. you can learn or help somebody else

  161. by understanding, encouraging them in this truth.

  162. But we're going to look here.

  163. One of the things that I find today in relationships,

  164. a major cause of a lack of friendship in marriage

  165. is couples focus on physical contact

  166. in their dating relationship.

  167. Physical contact prior to friendship becomes a problem,

  168. because you're building everything backwards.

  169. And when the physical takes priority

  170. in a romantic dating relationship,

  171. the friendship automatically stops growing.

  172. Now, let's give you a little illustration,

  173. because we're going to give you an illustration

  174. from an ice cream sundae, okay?

  175. Because I want you to understand,

  176. the bowl is that intellectual union.

  177. The bowl is the intellectual union.

  178. That's the friendship that you have with one another,

  179. to have that connection.

  180. You know, a bowl in an ice cream sundae,

  181. if you don't have the bowl,

  182. what happens to everything inside?

  183. It's hard to keep it together.

  184. That is that intellectual union.

  185. You might say the ice cream is that emotional union.

  186. You know, that's the sweet part.

  187. You know, the big like, it turns to love,

  188. and you're all excited, you know, and all the things.

  189. And then you have the toppings.

  190. That's the spiritual union.

  191. You know, the shared goals and shared dreams,

  192. shared direction.

  193. You know, when you get married,

  194. you need to be moving in the same direction.

  195. Especially when it comes to the things of God.

  196. If you're marrying somebody going in an opposite direction from God,

  197. you let them go.

  198. Because you're not moving in the same direction.

  199. The whipped cream is that physical union after marriage.

  200. Now, here's the danger.

  201. If you enter into a physical relationship before marriage,

  202. the other three parts stop growing immediately.

  203. Because God has them in an order for a reason.

  204. God has established those things for a reason.

  205. You know, because if you're dating and you skip to the last,

  206. all you have is whipped cream.

  207. You miss all the other things that are going to be beneficial

  208. that maintain the relationship.

  209. You know?

  210. If you find yourself saying,

  211. I was physically attracted to this person,

  212. but I really don't know if I like them,

  213. there's a problem.

  214. You know, if you don't at least like them,

  215. you're in trouble.

  216. It's going to be a long road.

  217. I want you to understand the importance as we look at this,

  218. because if you never grow together intellectually,

  219. emotion, or spiritually,

  220. you'll stand there with nothing but a handful of whipped cream.

  221. And I'll tell you what,

  222. whipped cream gets old really fast.

  223. If you have any questions,

  224. you can talk to some of the people.

  225. We used to have VBS offerings up here

  226. with the penny offerings,

  227. and the losers,

  228. we had a tradition of giving the other one

  229. a whipped cream pie in the face.

  230. And most of the time,

  231. about 20 minutes after the whipped cream hits you,

  232. you're going,

  233. eww.

  234. Because whipped cream by itself,

  235. without the rest of it,

  236. just isn't the same.

  237. It destroys very quickly

  238. instead of being a benefit to it.

  239. You know?

  240. I believe it's a major contributing cause

  241. of a lack of marital friendship

  242. because premarital relations

  243. so commonly accepted and practiced

  244. and is rampant within our society.

  245. The problem is,

  246. this is practiced and accepted amongst believers.

  247. they say,

  248. I have faith in God,

  249. but you know what?

  250. They don't trust what God said.

  251. God gave us the directions for a reason.

  252. And if we follow His order of things,

  253. it will benefit you

  254. when we trust Him.

  255. Do you have something, Gene?

  256. Yeah.

  257. Most young people,

  258. they're afraid of moving the person

  259. or dating

  260. that will never get anybody else,

  261. but they don't realize

  262. God has a plan for them.

  263. Yep.

  264. If you wait on the Lord,

  265. He'll bring the right one.

  266. You know?

  267. Good to hear the Martins,

  268. you know,

  269. meeting in church,

  270. that's a good place to meet.

  271. I like that.

  272. That's a,

  273. you know,

  274. I often tell parents that too,

  275. you know?

  276. Your kids meeting somebody

  277. at church camp

  278. or at church

  279. or a church activity,

  280. there's a lot worse places

  281. to be shopping for a spouse

  282. than those locations.

  283. There's no guarantee

  284. you're going to get a good one,

  285. but there are a lot better odds.

  286. You know?

  287. I'll just put it that way.

  288. There's still a lot of other elements in it,

  289. but you know what?

  290. If you want the best,

  291. you need to shop where the best are.

  292. You know?

  293. You don't look for quality

  294. at the discount store.

  295. You know,

  296. you expect what you get

  297. from the discount store.

  298. You know,

  299. if you use it once

  300. and it falls apart,

  301. you're like,

  302. okay,

  303. it's a discount store.

  304. You ought to seek,

  305. especially in marriage,

  306. to be shopping in the places

  307. that are going to have

  308. a premium spouse for you.

  309. That availability that is there.

  310. We'll move on from that one.

  311. But to the couple

  312. sitting here right now

  313. who know God is speaking

  314. to them in this matter,

  315. I hope it encourages you

  316. because not only is there a problem,

  317. but there's a solution.

  318. Maybe the cause I just listed

  319. applies to you.

  320. Maybe it's a lack of friendship

  321. because of something else.

  322. It doesn't matter.

  323. There's hope.

  324. God doesn't want to punish you

  325. throughout the life of your marriage

  326. because you made some mistakes

  327. along the way.

  328. God says those things

  329. can be corrected

  330. when they're dealt with

  331. in God's way.

  332. To rebuild those things

  333. in God's way

  334. and the way God

  335. put those things together.

  336. because the word

  337. we're going to look at

  338. here this morning

  339. for a few moments

  340. is a key word

  341. to focus on

  342. and that's companionship.

  343. Companionship

  344. is directly connected

  345. with friendship.

  346. Companionship.

  347. What's meant by companionship?

  348. Well, let me share

  349. a story with you.

  350. A guy and a girl meet

  351. and the guy likes to golf

  352. and the girlfriend likes

  353. to work out.

  354. But they like each other

  355. so they try each other's interests.

  356. They golf together

  357. and have a lot of fun

  358. and he tries to teach her the sport

  359. and she makes an extra effort to try

  360. and sometimes they go work out together

  361. even though it's not as fun

  362. to him as golf.

  363. But still, he's with her

  364. and that's what makes it great.

  365. So they get married

  366. and they start to take each other

  367. for granted

  368. and they fail to realize

  369. the importance of companionship

  370. after they get married.

  371. They forget about the friendship,

  372. the courtship

  373. and that the way

  374. that you get them

  375. is the way you keep them.

  376. So girls start telling the guy

  377. to go do his thing

  378. while he's on the golf course.

  379. She'll go work out.

  380. So now the guy

  381. is going to the one direction

  382. and the girl another.

  383. But after a while

  384. the guy meets another girl

  385. at the golf course.

  386. She's a good golfer.

  387. She really appreciates

  388. his love for the sport

  389. and wow,

  390. they have a common interest.

  391. Meanwhile,

  392. a girl meets another guy

  393. at the gym

  394. and he's a real gentleman.

  395. Almost reminds her

  396. of the kind way

  397. she was treated

  398. by her husband

  399. when they were dating.

  400. And would you spot me

  401. on this machine?

  402. And the guy says,

  403. sure.

  404. And what you have now,

  405. guys and girls

  406. are both cultivating relationships

  407. with other guys

  408. and other girls

  409. and deciding maybe

  410. they like them better

  411. than their spouse.

  412. One thing leads to another.

  413. It's all the devil's

  414. great design

  415. until finally something happens.

  416. The breakup ensues

  417. and it's all because

  418. the lack of companionship

  419. left them looking elsewhere

  420. for something more

  421. than what they could do

  422. and what do they look,

  423. what they looked for.

  424. You know,

  425. someone

  426. they cannot

  427. only be married to

  428. but will also be what?

  429. Their friend.

  430. You know,

  431. we find friendship

  432. is important.

  433. You know,

  434. to be a best friend,

  435. you know,

  436. and men likewise.

  437. You know,

  438. let's consider a few

  439. scriptures here this morning.

  440. Proverbs 18.24.

  441. Can you look that one up

  442. for me, Daryl,

  443. if you would?

  444. Proverbs 18.24.

  445. And then I need

  446. Proverbs 27.9.

  447. Proverbs 27.9.

  448. Can you get that one

  449. for me, Matt,

  450. if you would?

  451. The Matt up front,

  452. not the Matt in the back.

  453. And then

  454. so Proverbs 27.17.

  455. So if you can get

  456. verse 9 and verse 17.

  457. And then

  458. Acts 27

  459. in verse 3.

  460. You got that one, Gene?

  461. Acts 27, verse 3.

    Acts 27:3

  462. So let's read that.

  463. Proverbs 18.24.

  464. Okay.

  465. How about Proverbs 27.9?

  466. Okay.

  467. And then verse 17.

  468. Okay.

  469. How about Acts 27

  470. in verse 3?

  471. Okay.

  472. So the one thing

  473. we find in these verses

  474. that connects with friends

  475. is friends spend time together.

  476. You know?

  477. Friends spend time together.

  478. If you're going to be friends,

  479. you need to spend time together.

  480. Now, let's take a moment here

  481. because all of us

  482. probably have people

  483. that we call our friends

  484. but we're not as close to

  485. as we once were.

  486. And why are we not

  487. as close to them

  488. as we once were?

  489. We're not spending time.

  490. Time with them

  491. makes a difference.

  492. You know?

  493. Because when we get together,

  494. when friends spend time together

  495. and want to be together,

  496. they grow fond,

  497. they stay connected,

  498. they have fun together,

  499. they talk together.

  500. They talk together.

  501. But you know,

  502. those things come about

  503. when how do you spend

  504. your leisure time

  505. going in different directions

  506. is always a problem.

  507. You know,

  508. a lot of marriages today,

  509. we have people

  510. that do two different things

  511. and they have nothing

  512. that they do together.

  513. They have that common connection

  514. with one another.

  515. You know?

  516. As much as possible,

  517. we should do things together.

  518. You know?

  519. Now,

  520. I want you to understand

  521. what we're talking about here

  522. because there ought to be

  523. some things in your life.

  524. Now,

  525. I know there's guys that hunt,

  526. you know,

  527. and it's like,

  528. well,

  529. my wife doesn't hunt.

  530. Well,

  531. that's okay.

  532. Didn't say you can't go hunting.

  533. It's just the fact

  534. you need to make sure

  535. you have something

  536. that you both do together

  537. that's not centered

  538. around your children.

  539. Because let me give you

  540. a little advice.

  541. Your children will one day

  542. grow up and leave home.

  543. They're going to depart

  544. out of the scene

  545. and you're going to have

  546. an empty house.

  547. That's the cause

  548. of the great divorce.

  549. Because they don't have

  550. a relationship with each other.

  551. They concentrate on their kids.

  552. When the kids leave,

  553. there's no basis

  554. for them to come together.

  555. Yep.

  556. Yep.

  557. That's exactly the dynamic.

  558. I mean,

  559. it's a,

  560. but you see it play out.

  561. You see it play out what?

  562. Time and time again

  563. in people's relationships.

  564. And it doesn't matter

  565. whether they're even

  566. in church sometimes.

  567. You say,

  568. how does that happen?

  569. I've seen pastors

  570. that get divorces.

  571. Why?

  572. Because there's a problem

  573. in companionship.

  574. They're not in it together.

  575. You know?

  576. I want you to understand

  577. it doesn't mean

  578. that she loves going antiquing,

  579. you know,

  580. and you despise it.

  581. You know,

  582. if you don't like

  583. antiquing,

  584. then you're probably

  585. a normal guy.

  586. But sometimes

  587. there's things

  588. you need to do.

  589. She doesn't take me

  590. when they go shopping.

  591. I just...

  592. Shopping is not

  593. our companionship,

  594. let me tell you that.

  595. We learned our processes

  596. right away.

  597. I'm a guy shopper.

  598. I'm like a hunter.

  599. This is where it's located

  600. in the store.

  601. We're going in the store.

  602. We're getting this.

  603. You know,

  604. unless you go to a really

  605. cool store,

  606. like a tool store,

  607. and then that's

  608. a different store.

  609. You know?

  610. If you go to Sheels,

  611. that's an exception,

  612. okay?

  613. But the nice thing

  614. about Sheels,

  615. you can send them

  616. downstairs

  617. and you can go upstairs.

  618. Amen?

  619. Go look at the fish.

  620. But you know,

  621. I want you to understand

  622. that you can

  623. go do those things,

  624. but it ought not

  625. to be to the exclusion

  626. of spending time

  627. with one another.

  628. You ought not

  629. to exclude

  630. or make that

  631. such a priority.

  632. It excludes

  633. that connection

  634. with one another

  635. because that connection

  636. is important.

  637. That's the reason

  638. the Scripture

  639. makes it clear

  640. in there,

  641. this is my friend.

  642. That was a declarative

  643. statement

  644. that was a foundation

  645. of the relationship.

  646. To understand

  647. that dynamic

  648. of friendship,

  649. you know,

  650. it's talking about

  651. oftentimes

  652. that we need

  653. to,

  654. as men,

  655. we don't want

  656. to do,

  657. men who do

  658. what they want

  659. to do

  660. at the exclusion

  661. of their wives

  662. will have a problem

  663. because when we do

  664. things that separate

  665. us apart,

  666. instead of draw us

  667. together,

  668. there's going to be

  669. a disconnect.

  670. We need to be careful

  671. of that a healthy

  672. marriage cannot

  673. operate that way.

  674. You know,

  675. this is the reason

  676. companionship

  677. is so important.

  678. Now,

  679. number one there,

  680. because it's,

  681. why is companionship

  682. so important?

  683. Number one,

  684. because it's unhealthy

  685. for a married person

  686. to spend the most

  687. enjoyable moments

  688. of their life

  689. in the company

  690. of somebody else.

  691. As a married person,

  692. you should be able

  693. to enjoy the company

  694. of your spouse

  695. and enjoy those

  696. moments of life,

  697. the things that you

  698. enjoy together.

  699. You know,

  700. oftentimes we can

  701. get drawn away

  702. with different things.

  703. You know,

  704. and sometimes we can

  705. ask, you know,

  706. why did somebody

  707. even get married,

  708. you know,

  709. when the guy just

  710. wants to hang out

  711. with the boys all

  712. the time or sit

  713. and play on the

  714. computer?

  715. And, you know,

  716. why did they get

  717. married?

  718. Sometimes the same

  719. for ladies.

  720. Why do they talk

  721. with their friends

  722. for hours on in

  723. and shop?

  724. And why do they

  725. even want a guy

  726. around when that's

  727. all they want to do?

  728. You know,

  729. if the only time

  730. you have fun

  731. is when they're

  732. not around,

  733. then how in the

  734. world will you

  735. ever have a

  736. friendship together?

  737. You ought to have

  738. things that you

  739. enjoy together.

  740. Find things that

  741. you do together.

  742. Maybe it's finding

  743. something different

  744. than either one of

  745. you think you like

  746. and go do it

  747. together.

  748. Do something

  749. together.

  750. You know,

  751. companionship

  752. is important.

  753. It forms

  754. closeness

  755. in a relationship.

  756. Some may say

  757. we don't have

  758. common interest.

  759. God made us

  760. different.

  761. Well, I'll bet

  762. if you just pray

  763. about it,

  764. God will give you

  765. something you can

  766. both enjoy together.

  767. You know,

  768. you need to have

  769. that connection.

  770. That connection

  771. in marriage is

  772. what builds

  773. lasting marriages.

  774. you know.

  775. We need to

  776. understand

  777. to not give up,

  778. but sometimes

  779. you're going to

  780. have to swallow

  781. your pride,

  782. push away

  783. selfishness,

  784. and pray that

  785. God would give

  786. you something

  787. you can do

  788. together.

  789. Companionship

  790. is important

  791. because anything

  792. less is unhealthy

  793. in the relationship.

  794. Number two,

  795. companionship

  796. is important

  797. because pursuing

  798. your own self-interest

  799. without your spouse

  800. demonstrates selfishness.

  801. You know,

  802. it's really sad

  803. when people

  804. who are supposed

  805. to be adults

  806. act like kids.

  807. When they say,

  808. if I can't do it

  809. my way

  810. when I want to do it,

  811. I'm going to pick up

  812. my toys and go home.

  813. You know,

  814. selfishness

  815. causes an unhealthy

  816. relationship

  817. because it doesn't

  818. help companionship.

  819. because it becomes

  820. one-sided

  821. in the relationship.

  822. Gene?

  823. When I was first married,

  824. I was first strong

  825. and very selfish.

  826. It took me about

  827. 10 years

  828. to get older.

  829. I prayed and asked

  830. the Lord,

  831. but when I realized

  832. what I was doing,

  833. I guess it makes me

  834. more receptive

  835. to my wife's teeth.

  836. I saw

  837. and I said,

  838. that's the way

  839. we're going

  840. and God did that.

  841. Amen.

  842. Amen.

  843. You know,

  844. and that's a testimony

  845. sitting there.

  846. You know,

  847. that God can work

  848. through those things,

  849. can't He?

  850. You know,

  851. if we're willing

  852. to let Him

  853. and let Him

  854. do those things

  855. and you'll find

  856. that that is important,

  857. but companionship

  858. is also important

  859. because it will lead

  860. to a fulfilling marriage.

  861. You know,

  862. you're either looking,

  863. are you looking

  864. to just fulfill yourself

  865. or to have

  866. a fulfilling marriage?

  867. You'll never be happier

  868. than when you strive

  869. to be a giver

  870. and not a taker.

  871. When you give more,

  872. it will make them

  873. want to be a giver

  874. which benefits you naturally

  875. and it all snowballs

  876. from there.

  877. You know,

  878. to do those things,

  879. to be fulfilling,

  880. you know,

  881. sometimes it's a common problem

  882. that sometimes we do

  883. have issues in life

  884. and things come up

  885. and we just deal

  886. with all the negative things,

  887. you know,

  888. instead of saying

  889. what are things

  890. going to be beneficial?

  891. Because, you know,

  892. oftentimes,

  893. and this is another

  894. common scenario,

  895. a man has fun

  896. with people at work

  897. and he goes home

  898. to the washer is broken,

  899. the dog did his duty

  900. on the car,

  901. you know,

  902. you have a whole list

  903. of things that hit you

  904. at the door when you come in

  905. of all the things

  906. that happen,

  907. you know.

  908. Then he spends his day off

  909. doing something else

  910. but only thinks his spouse

  911. in terms of survival

  912. and by just getting by,

  913. if they never have fun together,

  914. they'll always associate

  915. negative things

  916. with each other

  917. while they associate

  918. fun times with others.

  919. You know,

  920. you need to do fun things together.

  921. That's what builds companionship,

  922. you know.

  923. to do things together.

  924. You know,

  925. God gives us a lot of things

  926. you can do together.

  927. I know people that,

  928. you know,

  929. do all sorts of different things

  930. together.

  931. It might be going out

  932. camping together,

  933. you know.

  934. It might be doing

  935. different things,

  936. you know.

  937. We like going out

  938. and adventure

  939. and we go hunt waterfalls

  940. and go look at mountains

  941. and trees and things,

  942. you know.

  943. And I have a philosophy

  944. if it's worth going,

  945. you can drive there.

  946. If you know what I drive,

  947. you'll understand.

  948. If my Jeep won't make it,

  949. it's probably not worth going.

  950. But that's just,

  951. you know,

  952. we joke around about that,

  953. but you know,

  954. it's something we do together.

  955. April and I do that together

  956. and we do other things together.

  957. We need to do,

  958. have something in common

  959. together that we do

  960. and just to enjoy

  961. spending time

  962. with one another.

  963. You know,

  964. your relationship,

  965. you need to enjoy

  966. wanting to spend time

  967. with the other

  968. because the other thing

  969. in this is that

  970. companionship is important

  971. because shared experiences

  972. lead to shared feelings.

  973. Shared experiences

  974. lead to shared feelings.

  975. Things you experience

  976. with somebody else

  977. connects you.

  978. You look back

  979. at those moments.

  980. if God made two into one,

  981. then it makes sense

  982. that those two

  983. will do

  984. one thing together.

  985. You know,

  986. think about this

  987. as the Bible

  988. teach this.

  989. You know,

  990. consider what it tells us,

  991. Ephesians 5, 25.

  992. Husbands,

  993. love your wives,

  994. even as Christ

  995. also loved the church

  996. and gave himself

  997. for it.

  998. Sacrificial love.

  999. Nothing is so important

  1000. that you won't

  1001. sacrifice it

  1002. for her.

  1003. You know?

  1004. Guys,

  1005. our relationship

  1006. with our wives

  1007. is important

  1008. that we invest in.

  1009. Got to invest

  1010. in that connection.

  1011. You know,

  1012. the problem is,

  1013. I think oftentimes

  1014. with guys,

  1015. we get the idea

1016. we keep a conquer mentality

  1017. even after we're married.

  1018. Because it's almost like

1019. you spend a lot of effort

  1020. to win them.

1021. And then you've won them

  1022. and it's like,

  1023. okay,

  1024. I've got that trophy,

1025. put it on the shelf

1026. and let's go do something else.

  1027. The problem is,

  1028. your wife,

  1029. she's not a trophy,

  1030. she's your wife.

  1031. She's not an accomplishment,

  1032. she's your wife.

1033. You need to keep building

  1034. that relationship.

  1035. Keep investing

  1036. in those things.

  1037. You know,

  1038. those things together.

  1039. You know,

  1040. you think about

  1041. Ephesians 5,

    Ephesians 5:26

  1042. verse 26 says this,

  1043. that he might sanctify

  1044. and cleanse it

  1045. with the washing

  1046. of the water

  1047. by the word,

  1048. that he might present

  1049. it to himself

  1050. a glorious church,

  1051. not having spot

  1052. or wrinkle

  1053. or any such thing,

  1054. be holy

  1055. and without blemish.

1056. So men ought to love

  1057. their wives

  1058. as their own bodies

  1059. and he that loveth

  1060. his wife

  1061. loveth himself.

  1062. You know,

  1063. if you're going

  1064. to love your wife

  1065. and loving yourself

  1066. need to be interconnected.

  1067. if you're one,

  1068. to love her

  1069. is to love yourself.

  1070. It's for your benefit.

  1071. It's for her benefit.

  1072. You know,

  1073. it's a sanctifying love.

1074. It goes on in Ephesians

  1075. in verse 29,

  1076. it says,

  1077. for no man

  1078. hath yet hated

  1079. his own flesh

  1080. but nourished

  1081. and cherished it

  1082. even as the Lord

  1083. the church.

  1084. You know,

  1085. when we understand

  1086. this idea

  1087. of one flesh,

  1088. of what God

  1089. is doing.

  1090. You know,

  1091. that's a secure love

  1092. and some people

  1093. are insecure

  1094. because they're not sure

  1095. if their spouse

  1096. really likes them

  1097. as a friend.

  1098. That friendship,

  1099. that companionship

  1100. is important

  1101. and critical

  1102. in a relationship

  1103. in a marriage.

  1104. To maintain

  1105. those things,

  1106. to enjoy

  1107. time together

  1108. because shared

  1109. experiences,

  1110. shared connection

  1111. build bonds.

  1112. It's what connects

  1113. people together

  1114. and especially

  1115. in marriage.

  1116. And so we'll leave

  1117. off there

  1118. before we get

  1119. into the next point

  1120. next week.

  1121. But, you know,

  1122. think about

  1123. your companionship.

  1124. You know,

  1125. be observant,

  1126. be thinking about

  1127. those things

  1128. of how that connects

  1129. and how that

  1130. importance of that

  1131. in your relationship

  1132. relationship

  1133. with your spouse.

  1134. And if you're single,

  1135. you can think

  1136. in context,

1137. how does that play out?

  1138. What am I doing

  1139. to prepare myself

  1140. for that

  1141. in the future?

  1142. Because if you're

  1143. going to get married,

1144. you'd best to be prepared

  1145. before you get there.

1146. At least a little bit.

  1147. You're still not prepared.

  1148. Marriage is an adventure

  1149. that you...

  1150. Because you never know

1151. where it might take you

1152. or what's going to happen.

  1153. But if you have

  1154. the right foundation

  1155. and the right connection

  1156. and the right attitude,

  1157. the right companionship

  1158. with God,

  1159. you can go through

  1160. anything

  1161. that you face

  1162. as you're together.

  1163. Let's pray.

  1164. Heavenly Father,

1165. as we come before you

  1166. this morning,

1167. Lord, we just thank you

  1168. and praise you

  1169. for your word.

  1170. And Lord,

  1171. even the reality

  1172. of just our spouse

  1173. being our friend

1174. and even our best friend,

  1175. Lord,

  1176. that you might

  1177. just help us

  1178. to always be mindful

  1179. of that essential nature

  1180. of that connection there,

  1181. Lord,

  1182. that you might

  1183. build those bonds

  1184. with one another,

  1185. Lord,

1186. even in the relationships here,

  1187. Lord,

1188. that we might be mindful

  1189. of those things

1190. and the importance of it.

  1191. And Lord,

1192. we just ask all these things

  1193. in your precious name.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. All right.

  1196. See everybody...
