  1. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson. Appreciate that.

  2. Take your Bibles over to Mark chapter 11.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  3. And whenever I hear that song, I always think of Brother Dart

  4. and just being able to spend time with him.

  5. And it's good memories, as the Dart used to come and sing here.

  6. And it was just always a blessing to be able to have them here with us.

  7. But they're now singing in a much better place. Amen.

  8. And so we're thankful for that and just the things there.

  9. But in Mark chapter 11 here this morning,

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  10. as we're going to continue in our series through the book of Mark,

  11. we find now it is Tuesday morning and the religious leaders in Jerusalem,

  12. at this point, we're probably hoping that Jesus would not return to the temple.

  13. You know, after the previous two events of the previous two days,

  14. I'm pretty sure that all the leaders within the temple in the area were saying,

  15. we don't want him to show up again today because we don't know what's going to happen.

  16. But you know what?

  17. We're going to find here that Jesus did return.

  18. And we're going to find out what took place because in his previous visits,

  19. I mean, they were still causing a stir among the people.

  20. Stir amongst the leaders in his previous visits.

  21. When you think about as he entered into Jerusalem on that Sunday morning,

  22. as the people had put down their clothes and he rode upon the donkey all the way through town there

  23. and people were proclaiming and crying out just as Zechariah the prophet foretold,

  24. saying,

  25. Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

  26. You know, when we understand that they were honoring him as the one that God had sent

  27. as the Savior, the one that was going to deliver them.

  28. And Jesus accepted that praise to him.

  29. And we find the following day after he goes back to Bethany,

  30. he comes back and he comes back to the temple and he disrupts everything going on in the temple on Monday.

  31. You know, if you remember, he overturned the tables.

  32. He changed out the money changers.

  33. And he taught in the temple that day and all the things that took place.

  34. And it caused quite an uproar.

  35. I mean, it's pretty obvious.

  36. It was probably causing much people to talk.

  37. I mean, if there were social media in that day, that would have been what lit everything up.

  38. You know, everybody would be talking about Jesus, what he did in the temple.

  39. You know, and they'd be making the newsreel and the TikTok and everything else.

  40. Everybody would be talking about it, about what was happening.

  41. I mean, it was that type of event that Jesus did in the temple.

  42. That it would have stirred people up, if nothing else, to ask a question.

  43. They would end wondering, who is Jesus?

  44. Who is the one that did this?

  45. Who is the one that came in and caused this uproar?

  46. So we find here is Jesus.

  47. We're going to look here as Jesus returns to the temple on Tuesday morning.

  48. I can just imagine, as I was reading this and thinking about it, you know, oftentimes I try to think about, you know, how are people responding?

  49. And I was just thinking, you know, I just imagine the chief priests and the scribes and the elders that are going to come and confront Jesus when they see Jesus come in.

  50. They're thinking, not again.

  51. Just that element of, okay, here we go, you know.

  52. They're trying to put together, how are we going to deal with this?

  53. Because he had disrupted everything about what they were doing.

  54. Because we have to keep in mind, this was Passover week.

  55. It was the week of Passover and they had certain things that they would do throughout the week in preparation for Passover.

  56. And Jesus had disrupted the normal.

  57. Now the thing was, we need to remember, there was a problem with normal.

  58. What they were doing is not what they ought to be doing.

  59. But we need to understand that it is.

  60. It's just like us.

  61. When our normal gets shaken out, it kind of disrupts everything, doesn't it?

  62. Kind of gets us on edge and we find that dynamic.

  63. But this is where we find is the chief priests and scribes and elders see Jesus coming into the temple and taking his place out there in the promenade in the outer perimeter there.

  64. And I can just imagine Jesus sitting down and the crowd see him.

  65. And they begin to gather and they come together.

  66. And this is where we're going to pick up here in chapter 11 here this morning in verse 27.

  67. And so if you found that in your Bible, let's go ahead and stand together for the honor of reading of God's word.

  68. And we'll pick up here in verse 27 and read down through the end of the chapter.

  69. And we're going to have everybody read responsibly here this morning.

  70. And so I'll read verse 27 and you guys will read verse 28.

  71. Okay, so we'll just go back and forth, okay?

  72. And so let's try this together here this morning.

  73. And it says,

  74. And as he was walking in the temple, there came to him the chief priests and scribes and the elders and say unto him,

  75. By what authority doest thou these things?

  76. And who gave thee this authority to do these things?

  77. And Jesus answered and said unto them,

  78. I will also ask of you one question and answer me,

  79. And I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

  80. The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?

  81. Answer me.

  82. And they reasoned with themselves, saying,

  83. If we shall say from heaven,

  84. He will say,

  85. Why then did ye not believe him?

  86. But if we shall say of men,

  87. They feared the people,

  88. For all men counted John,

  89. That he was a prophet indeed.

  90. And they answered and said unto Jesus,

  91. We cannot tell.

  92. And Jesus answered and saith unto them,

  93. Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  94. Let's pray.

  95. Heavenly Father, as we come before you this morning,

  96. Lord, we're just thankful for your word.

  97. We're thankful for all that you provide for us.

  98. Lord, we're thankful that you are the one in authority.

  99. And you came with authority.

  100. Lord, we pray just to help us understand how we respond to that authority.

  101. Lord, especially your word and with you.

  102. Lord, as we see here this morning,

  103. The need that something must be done.

  104. That needs to be addressed of your authority in our life,

  105. Of what you're doing.

  106. And Lord, we pray we might not deny or delay.

  107. Lord, we might just accept who you are and what you've done.

  108. And Lord, we pray just to have your hand upon each heart here today,

  109. Lord, that we might consider that place of your authority in our lives here today.

  110. And Lord, we just ask all these things in your precious name.

  111. Amen.

  112. May be seated.

  113. You know, I think the scene here would have been something to behold.

  114. As you see, Jesus was walking in the temple, getting ready to teach.

  115. And people would have been following him.

  116. And all of a sudden, you begin to hear a rumble in the background.

  117. The rumble of many little feet coming across the temple there.

  118. And we find that this group that was coming to meet Jesus,

  119. We see here where the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people.

  120. And we find as these inquisitors drew closer,

  121. This would have been quite a crowd of individuals that came to meet Jesus.

  122. It wasn't just one or two.

  123. It was like a whole crowd that would have been there that day to meet Jesus and to confront him.

  124. There would have been many there.

  125. So they would have made a noise coming across the temple area there.

  126. You know, I don't think it was carpeted like we have here.

  127. You know, it was a stone building.

  128. So you would have heard people coming in the ruckus that was about to happen.

  129. And these three groups of Jewish leaders converge here to confront Jesus about what they had,

  130. all that had taken place.

  131. And we're going to look at their demand because they had a demand about his authority.

  132. You know, and oftentimes we look at this,

  133. but I want you to understand as the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came that day,

  134. they were the ones that if there was a problem,

  135. they were the ones that had a position of authority within the temple to deal with different things.

  136. So in other words, it wasn't like a wrong crowd confronting Jesus in that sense,

  137. but why they were confronting him was a problem.

  138. And we're going to look here because the chief priests,

  139. just to kind of give you a little layout here of who these were,

  140. you know, the chief priests,

  141. the administrative staff over the priests of the temple,

  142. you know, they kind of oversaw all that,

  143. the temple things,

  144. the things the priests were to do with the sacrifices

  145. and to take care of the showbread

  146. and to take care of all the lamps

  147. and all the things that were necessary.

  148. That was their responsibility.

  149. They had oversight of that.

  150. And so they were,

  151. Jesus was, you might say,

  152. was in their quote-unquote territory of responsibility.

  153. You know, and so when Jesus would come,

  154. then you had the scribes.

  155. Now the scribes,

  156. those were those responsible for studying the Hebrew scriptures

  157. and they served as those who would copy the scriptures

  158. and they were editors and teachers and jurists.

  159. They were ones who would look at the law

  160. and try to keep track of it

  161. and understand those things.

  162. And then you have this other group,

  163. the elders.

  164. Now we don't know for sure how many came

  165. in the chief priests group

  166. or the scribe group,

  167. but we do have a pretty good idea

  168. how many showed up with the elders.

  169. Because we know from the Old Testament

  170. some things about this group

  171. and where they got it.

  172. You know, we find here the elders,

  173. this group was also known as the Sanhedrin.

  174. It was comprised of 70 men

  175. from among the people.

  176. And now these men,

  177. their responsibility is they would take care

  178. of the moral and ethical questions of the day.

  179. You know, we think today we just,

  180. we're the only generation sometimes

  181. that have moral or ethical questions that come up,

  182. but how do we deal with it?

  183. But you know,

  184. as human beings throughout time

  185. and as you grow and mature

  186. and as cultures change

  187. and different things impact it,

  188. we have different moral and ethical questions

  189. we have to answer.

  190. And that was the saying,

  191. this elder's job was to kind of look through

  192. and kind of come to a consensus.

  193. Okay, this is where we're going to be.

  194. This is where we're going to land on this.

  195. And we find they get that from Numbers 11

  196. when Moses put together the 70

  197. to help rule Israel.

  198. And that was kind of their pattern.

  199. So we know already there was probably

  200. between 80 and 100 people came to meet Jesus.

  201. That's the reason I'm saying

  202. you could hear him coming.

  203. I mean, when 80 people are moving across the room together,

  204. you can hear him.

  205. I mean, that's a pretty sizable group of individuals.

  206. I can see them coming here

  207. and we're going to find here

  208. as they come and confront Jesus

  209. and these questioners demand

  210. that the Lord answer them

  211. regarding the authority to do these things.

  212. Now notice here in verse 28 in our text,

  213. it says,

  214. And say unto him,

  215. By what authority doest thou these things?

  216. And the follow-up to that,

  217. and who gave thee this authority to do these things?

  218. You know, those are two pretty good questions they asked.

  219. There was nothing wrong with the question itself

  220. that they were asking.

  221. Because remember,

  222. they were responsible

  223. for what took place in the temple.

  224. So them asking the question itself

  225. was not the issue.

  226. The question itself isn't the problem.

  227. But we're going to look here this morning.

  228. The problem was their attitude

  229. and their perception that led to the question.

  230. Because we can ask a question for the wrong reason.

  231. You know, sometimes we can ask questions

  232. and say,

  233. You know, this is important.

  234. I need to know more about it.

  235. I need more information.

  236. I need more substance of what's going on here.

  237. But I want you to understand,

  238. as we look at this,

  239. we're going to find that these men

  240. that confronted Jesus this day

  241. were not there to get more information.

  242. They were there to try to discredit Him.

  243. They were there to try to say,

  244. He's going to say something

  245. that's going to give us ammunition

  246. against Him.

  247. You know,

  248. we're going to catch Him in a question here

  249. on this question of authority.

  250. And so they asked Him,

  251. And who, you know,

  252. why do you do these things?

  253. And who gave you authority to do it?

  254. Because you think about,

  255. Jesus took a lot of authority

  256. when He came into the temple

  257. and He began driving out

  258. all the those that bought and sold

  259. and overturning the tables in the temple.

  260. That was something somebody

  261. had to have some authority to do.

  262. It wasn't just something you throw in.

  263. You know, if you think about,

  264. if you go in some place

  265. you're not supposed to be

  266. and you start doing that,

  267. you're going to get kicked out pretty quick.

  268. You know?

  269. I want you to understand

  270. that they had a question

  271. about His authority

  272. because the way people were gathering

  273. and looking and honoring Jesus,

  274. and we're going to look at what was going on,

  275. here this morning.

  276. Because Jesus here,

  277. by accepting the claim,

  278. when they said,

  279. Hosanna,

  280. and that He came in the name of the Lord,

  281. and He was the one,

  282. they're basically saying,

  283. He's the one that came to save us.

  284. He's from God.

  285. That's a big claim.

  286. The next day,

  287. He comes in and cleans out the temple

  288. and wouldn't let anybody pass.

  289. That's a big claim of authority.

  290. Why can you do this?

  291. Or why are you doing this?

  292. The leaders were upset

  293. because He accepted the praise

  294. and the honor,

  295. and He took authority

  296. to cleanse the temple

  297. and to prepare the place

  298. for the Passover that week.

  299. You know,

  300. they did not come

  301. with an honest inquiry,

  302. but their question

  303. was in the basis of

  304. who gave you the authority

  305. that we have?

  306. Why are you questioning

  307. my authority?

  308. That's really what they were asking Jesus.

  309. They're saying,

  310. hey, listen up,

  311. we have the authority.

  312. Who do you think you are?

  313. Now, this is an important reality

  314. because these two questions

  315. still impact us today.

  316. Because when the gospel is proclaimed,

  317. there's a question,

  318. by what authority

  319. do you declare

  320. what the gospel is to people?

  321. Because the gospel contains authority.

  322. Because the authority is

  323. God's assessment

  324. of an individual.

  325. You know,

  326. you can accurately assess

  327. an individual

  328. by God's Word.

  329. God says His Word

  330. is a mirror.

  331. It reflects directly.

  332. And God reveals to us

  333. very clearly

  334. that we are all sinners

  335. and have all come short

  336. of the glory of God.

  337. I want you to understand,

  338. we understand that

  339. I'm a sinner

  340. and you're a sinner.

  341. How do we know that?

  342. I don't have to see what you do.

  343. God already declares it to be so.

  344. And when we understand the gospel,

  345. when somebody's confronted

  346. with the gospel,

  347. they're confronted

  348. with the question,

  349. who gave you authority

  350. to assess me?

  351. We don't assess them,

  352. but God's Word does.

  353. By God's authority,

  354. it's a declaration.

  355. You know,

  356. when we understand

  357. the big picture here,

  358. because the problem is

  359. most of the time

  360. people think

  361. they're a good person.

  362. You know?

  363. Most people look at themselves

  364. and look at their own righteousness

  365. and say,

  366. I'm not as bad as.

  367. The problem is there

  368. we often look at the wrong thing.

  369. You know?

  370. We look at the wrong assessment

  371. because our measurement

  372. isn't your neighbor.

  373. Your assessment

  374. isn't against the person

  375. you don't like.

  376. We're being measured

  377. by God Himself.

  378. He is the standard.

  379. Jesus Christ

  380. is the standard

  381. by which we're measured.

  382. It doesn't take long

  383. to figure out

  384. you fall short.

  385. You don't measure up.

  386. It's a question

  387. of authority.

  388. My authority

  389. or God's authority.

  390. You know,

  391. Isaiah 5.21

  392. tells us this.

  393. It says,

  394. Woe unto them

  395. that are wise

  396. in their own eyes

  397. and prudent

  398. in their own sight.

  399. You know,

  400. it's really easy

  401. to think highly

  402. of ourselves.

  403. and we understand

  404. that when the gospel

  405. is presented,

  406. when the demand

  407. is made of authority,

  408. we have some questions

  409. that need to be answered.

  410. Now notice,

  411. they demanded an answer

  412. already assuming

  413. they could discredit it.

  414. Notice what they tell him here.

  415. And they,

  416. and he says,

  417. they tell him this

  418. and ask in verse 28,

  419. By what authority

  420. doest thou these things?

  421. And who gave thee

  422. this authority to do?

  423. These things.

  424. So Jesus responds here

  425. in the next verse.

  426. His response to them

  427. is not a direct answer

  428. in a sense,

  429. but an indirect answer.

  430. And there's a reason for that

  431. because remember,

  432. they were looking

  433. for ammunition.

  434. They were looking

  435. for something

  436. to discredit him.

  437. You know,

  438. we can learn a lot

  439. from Jesus

  440. about a little tact.

  441. because Jesus

  442. could have openly declared,

  443. I do it by my own authority

  444. because I and the Father

  445. are one.

  446. But that would have created

  447. a problem

  448. at the moment

  449. because the timing

  450. was not yet right.

  451. Because the scribes

  452. and elders

  453. could have said,

  454. he assessed himself

  455. to God.

  456. By our law,

  457. we can stone him.

  458. Now we know

  459. that Jesus is

  460. and Jesus didn't

  461. deny that he wasn't.

  462. But notice how he

  463. deals with the situation.

  464. He looks at them

  465. and asks them a question.

  466. He says,

  467. you answer this first

  468. and then I will tell you

  469. by what authority.

  470. And we'll look a little later

  471. in the weeks to come,

  472. we're going to see

  473. that Jesus gives them

  474. an answer

  475. through parable.

  476. and when you finish

  477. reading in chapter 12,

  478. you'll find out

  479. that they understood

  480. the answer.

  481. Jesus didn't give them

  482. ammunition,

  483. he gave them an answer

  484. that they didn't like.

  485. But it was an accurate answer.

  486. And they didn't doubt

  487. what he said.

  488. But we find here

  489. that Jesus,

  490. look at Jesus' question.

  491. He said,

  492. verse 29,

  493. I will also ask of you

  494. one question

  495. and answer me

  496. and I will tell you

  497. by what authority

  498. I do these things.

  499. And he asked him

  500. a very simple question.

  501. He looks at him

  502. and says,

  503. the baptism of John,

  504. was it from heaven

  505. or of man?

  506. simple question.

  507. But it was a question

  508. also of authority.

  509. Because by what authority

  510. did John come?

  511. These men

  512. that were there

  513. before Jesus

  514. were struggling

  515. with that same question.

  516. They struggled

  517. with John.

  518. John was a problem

  519. to them.

  520. They sent people out

  521. to investigate John.

  522. They went out

  523. to try to catch John

  524. in something

  525. that they could

  526. hold against him.

  527. These are individuals

  528. who looked at

  529. John's ministry

  530. and to say,

  531. what was going on?

  532. The baptism of John.

  533. And Jesus says,

  534. was it from heaven

  535. or of man?

  536. Jesus gives them

  537. a reverse question

  538. of authority.

  539. He says,

  540. what authority

  541. did John come by?

  542. Now,

  543. we're going to see

  544. the dilemma

  545. that Jesus put him in.

  546. Because Jesus

  547. didn't ask this question

  548. just to get out

  549. of answering.

  550. He asked this

  551. pointed question

  552. back to them

  553. to make them

  554. process

  555. the thought

  556. of authority.

  557. Let them consider

  558. how were they thinking?

  559. Were they perceiving

  560. things correctly?

  561. Because the answer

  562. of authority

  563. rested in the answer

  564. to Jesus' question

  565. about John.

  566. John.

  567. Because, you know,

  568. John, like I said,

  569. had made quite a stir.

  570. And his ministry

  571. had stirred up

  572. many things.

  573. And we hear now

  574. and understand

  575. that John,

  576. those that heard him

  577. personally

  578. were many among

  579. this group.

  580. And they had heard

  581. his message.

  582. because John came

  583. proclaiming the one

  584. that was going to come.

  585. But I want you

  586. to understand

  587. there's no separation

  588. between John's message

  589. to the people

  590. and Jesus' message

  591. to the people.

  592. The two are

  593. perfectly aligned.

  594. Consider Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  595. chapter 2,

  596. or Matthew chapter 3

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  597. and verse 2.

  598. John the Baptist

  599. here,

  600. this was his message,

  601. Repent ye

  602. for the kingdom

  603. of heaven

  604. is at hand.

  605. He said,

  606. Repent ye

  607. for the kingdom

  608. of heaven

  609. is at hand.

  610. Then you have

  611. Jesus' statement

  612. at the beginning

  613. of his ministry

  614. when he began

  615. his ministry here.

  616. We find over there

  617. in Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  618. and verse 15.

  619. And Jesus

  620. and saying,

  621. The time is fulfilled,

  622. the kingdom of God

  623. is at hand.

  624. Repent ye

  625. and believe the gospel.

  626. the messages

  627. were the same.

  628. The problem

  629. with the people

  630. that came,

  631. they had rejected

  632. John's message

  633. and they didn't like

  634. Jesus' version

  635. of it any better.

  636. Because it gave

  637. the same assessment

  638. when they had rejected

  639. the message

  640. of John the Baptist

  641. and now they had rejected

  642. that same message

  643. of Jesus.

  644. Because notice here

  645. in verse 31

  646. it brings to light

  647. the gravity

  648. of the situation

  649. because this reveals

  650. the heart

  651. of these individuals.

  652. Because they really

  653. weren't seeking

  654. for an answer,

  655. they were seeking

  656. on how they could

  657. maneuver.

  658. How they could

  659. protect themselves,

  660. how they could

  661. keep themselves

  662. in a good light.

  663. You know,

  664. it's no different

  665. from us today.

  666. Have you ever noticed

  667. how we're masters

  668. at trying to maneuver

  669. to make sure

  670. we look good?

  671. I mean,

  672. it's just something

  673. that comes

  674. part of our nature

  675. to say,

  676. I want to prop

  677. myself up

  678. to look good.

  679. I don't want to

  680. have to deal

  681. with uncomfortable

  682. things about myself.

  683. It's much easier

  684. to point out

  685. other people's

  686. uncomfortableness.

  687. Things that they did.

  688. You know,

  689. it's always easier

  690. to point the finger

  691. than it is

  692. to look back at us.

  693. But we find here

  694. that they begin

  695. to analyze

  696. the question,

  697. the dilemma

  698. that we're in.

  699. Look here in verse 31,

  700. it says,

  701. and they reasoned

  702. with themselves,

  703. saying,

  704. now notice

  705. what they were saying,

  706. because it's the question

  707. that got them

  708. caught up.

  709. Because this decision

  710. put them in a dilemma

  711. of what they were

  712. going to do.

  713. Because they were

  714. caught between

  715. two places

  716. of authority.

  717. Because what they

  718. said here

  719. revealed a lot.

  720. Now notice

  721. that it was not

  722. just a personal

  723. debate,

  724. but it was

  725. something they did

  726. together.

  727. It says they reasoned

  728. with themselves.

  729. So you kind of

  730. look at the scripture

  731. there,

  732. and this is kind of

  733. what I picture

  734. in my mind,

  735. that Jesus confronts

  736. them with this,

  737. and they look at Jesus

  738. and say,

  739. just a minute.

  740. And they turn around

  741. and they all huddle up,

  742. you know,

  743. and going,

  744. okay,

  745. what are we going

  746. to do here?

  747. How do we answer

  748. this?

  749. They reasoned

  750. with themselves,

  751. saying,

  752. how do I deal

  753. with it?

  754. How are we going

  755. to deal with

  756. this question?

  757. This is a good,

  758. tricky question

  759. Jesus posed

  760. to us here,

  761. because it has

  762. implications.

  763. There's a lot

  764. of things implied

  765. by how we say

  766. something here,

  767. because notice

  768. what they do

  769. here.

  770. Verse 31,

  771. saying,

  772. if we shall

  773. say from heaven,

  774. he will say,

  775. why then

  776. did you not

  777. believe him?

  778. But if we say

  779. of men,

  780. they feared the

  781. people,

  782. for all men

  783. counted John,

  784. that he was a

  785. prophet indeed.

  786. So the first

  787. two parts of

  788. their dilemma

  789. here were very

  790. clear.

  791. they had a

  792. real dilemma

  793. on their hands.

  794. They're like,

  795. well,

  796. John's a hard

  797. one to answer

  798. here,

  799. because if we

  800. say from

  801. heaven,

  802. Jesus can

  803. look at us

  804. and say,

  805. well,

  806. why didn't

  807. you believe

  808. him?

  809. You're the

  810. ones that

  811. are supposed

  812. to be looking

  813. for the things

  814. from heaven.

  815. You're the

  816. ones that

  817. are supposed

  818. to be guiding

  819. people to

  820. heaven.

  821. You're the

  822. ones that

  823. are supposed

  824. to be overseeing

  825. all that God

  826. is doing here.

  827. You have a

  828. responsibility

  829. from heaven.

  830. You have a

  831. responsibility

  832. to respond

  833. correctly.

  834. I can just

  835. see their

  836. minds

  837. strolling,

  838. you know,

  839. spinning around

  840. in there going,

  841. okay,

  842. how do we

  843. get out of

  844. this one?

  845. Because they

  846. say if it's

  847. from heaven,

  848. we have a

  849. big problem

  850. because we

  851. rejected John.

  852. Because you

  853. have to keep

  854. in mind,

  855. John had

  856. been beheaded

  857. at this

  858. point.

  859. So his

  860. ministry was

  861. passed.

  862. In other words,

  863. they couldn't

  864. do anything

  865. different about

  866. it now.

  867. But they

  868. did have to

  869. make a

  870. decision about

  871. it.

  872. Because it

  873. carried with

  874. it, the

  875. first was

  876. to agree

  877. that John

  878. was sent

  879. by God.

  880. In other

  881. words, that

  882. he was from

  883. heaven.

  884. The

  885. implications

  886. here, if

  887. John was

  888. sent by

  889. God, then

  890. his religious

  891. leaders, why

  892. did they not

  893. believe him?

  894. And his

  895. call to

  896. repent and

  897. to believe

  898. the gospel,

  899. to believe

  900. in the

  901. Messiah that

  902. was coming.

  903. And

  904. God

  905. was the

  906. same.

  907. There was a

  908. direct

  909. parallel here.

  910. to say, if

  911. I accept

  912. that, then

  913. I have to

  914. accept Christ

  915. also.

  916. That at

  917. least he

  918. was from

  919. heaven.

  920. They had to

  921. recognize who

  922. he is.

  923. You say, why

  924. is that?

  925. Well, John

  926. had openly

  927. endorsed Jesus

  928. saying, all

  929. my message is

  930. the one I'm

  931. pointing to.

  932. That's him.

  933. So if you

  934. accepted John

  935. as from

  936. heaven, it

  937. was the same

  938. as saying, I

  939. acknowledge that

  940. John was the

  941. forerunner that

  942. was prophesied

  943. that pointed

  944. to Jesus.

  945. You know, John

  946. made it very

  947. clear.

  948. The gospel of

  949. John in

  950. chapter 1,

  951. verse 29,

  952. tells us this.

  953. It says, the

  954. next day John

  955. seeth Jesus

  956. coming unto

  957. him, and

  958. saith, behold,

  959. the Lamb of

  960. God, which

  961. taketh away the

  962. sin of the

  963. world.

  964. That's a

  965. pretty bold

  966. statement.

  967. For John to

  968. point at Jesus

  969. and make that

  970. statement, that's

  971. a big proclamation.

  972. A big

  973. acknowledgement

  974. saying, hey

  975. guys, the one

  976. I've been telling

  977. you about, that's

  978. him.

  979. The one that

  980. God sent me to

  981. proclaim and to

  982. tell you he was

  983. on his way, he

  984. has arrived.

  985. But considering

  986. they'd already

  987. rejected him as

  988. savior, and

  989. rejected John as

  990. being from God,

  991. there was a

  992. problem.

  993. They had a

  994. dilemma on

  995. their hands.

  996. You say, well,

  997. what was the

  998. dilemma there?

  999. Well, the

  1000. dilemma was the

  1001. other side.

  1002. Because notice

  1003. the other side of

  1004. their dilemma.

  1005. The second, if

  1006. they rejected,

  1007. John was sent

  1008. by God, but

  1009. what is we say

  1010. of men?

  1011. Notice what he

  1012. tells us here

  1013. in verse 32.

  1014. It says, but if

  1015. we shall say

  1016. of men, they

  1017. feared the

  1018. people.

  1019. Because what

  1020. their desire was

  1021. to say, John

  1022. was just somebody

  1023. doing something

  1024. on his own.

  1025. In other

  1026. words, men

  1027. endorsed him

  1028. which gave him

  1029. authority.

  1030. But that was a

  1031. problem because

  1032. the people, the

  1033. very same people

  1034. that recognized

  1035. their authority

  1036. as priests

  1037. and scribes

  1038. and the

  1039. elders, those

  1040. same people

  1041. recognized John

  1042. as not just

  1043. somebody sent

  1044. by man or

  1045. somebody that

  1046. they promoted.

  1047. The people

  1048. looked at John

  1049. and said, he

  1050. is a prophet.

  1051. prophet.

  1052. Now by saying

  1053. that, I want

  1054. you to understand

  1055. that basically

  1056. it's telling us

  1057. this, the

  1058. prophets of old

  1059. that are recorded

  1060. in the Old

  1061. Testament, in

  1062. the people's

  1063. mindset, they

  1064. looked at John

  1065. and the

  1066. prophet

  1067. he is equal

  1068. to them.

  1069. He was a

  1070. prophet sent

  1071. by God to

  1072. our day.

  1073. that's a

  1074. pretty powerful

  1075. thing amongst

  1076. a quarter.

  1077. To understand

  1078. the word of

  1079. God, a prophet

  1080. in the Old

  1081. Testament carried

  1082. a lot of

  1083. clout.

  1084. To the

  1085. people, John

  1086. was a prophet

  1087. and John was

  1088. a prophet sent

  1089. by God.

  1090. The people

  1091. were accurate

  1092. in understanding

  1093. who John

  1094. is, but

  1095. these leaders

  1096. didn't like it

  1097. because John

  1098. challenged their

  1099. authority.

  1100. You know, if

  1101. you read through

  1102. the scripture

  1103. you'll find

  1104. that John

  1105. wasn't very

  1106. kind to them

  1107. a lot of

  1108. times when

  1109. they would

  1110. come out

  1111. and he

  1112. would expose

  1113. them for

  1114. who they

  1115. were.

  1116. Now you've

  1117. got to

  1118. remember

  1119. something very

  1120. important here.

  1121. We talk about

  1122. this today.

  1123. You know,

  1124. today we talk

  1125. about insiders.

  1126. You've got to

  1127. remember what

  1128. was John's

  1129. father's job.

  1130. He was a

  1131. priest.

  1132. priest.

  1133. In other

  1134. words, John

  1135. knew all

  1136. about the

  1137. inner workings

  1138. of what was

  1139. going on

  1140. behind the

  1141. scene.

  1142. You know?

  1143. And I don't

  1144. think it made

  1145. him very

  1146. comfortable when

  1147. he called

  1148. them out.

  1149. Because the

  1150. problem is if

  1151. somebody calls

  1152. you out and

  1153. you know they

  1154. don't really

  1155. have a clue,

  1156. it doesn't

  1157. bother you that

  1158. much.

  1159. But when somebody

  1160. calls you out

  1161. and you know

  1162. they're accurate,

  1163. that's a

  1164. problem.

  1165. And John

  1166. had dealt

  1167. with them and

  1168. so we see this

  1169. consideration of

  1170. what they,

  1171. if John was

  1172. from heaven,

  1173. then we ought

  1174. to have believed

  1175. him, but we

  1176. can't say we

  1177. didn't believe

  1178. John was from

  1179. heaven because

  1180. then the people

  1181. would be a

  1182. problem and

  1183. we're scared of

  1184. the people too.

  1185. Because you've

  1186. got to understand

  1187. they were in

  1188. authority because

  1189. the people

  1190. accepted it.

  1191. And they

  1192. were in

  1193. authority because

  1194. the people

  1195. accepted it.

  1196. they feared

  1197. the people.

  1198. Fear of

  1199. people directed

  1200. their decision

  1201. regarding John

  1202. and Jesus.

  1203. That's the

  1204. other reason

  1205. you'll find

  1206. that they

  1207. didn't just,

  1208. we'll read here

  1209. a little later,

  1210. they didn't just

  1211. come and take

  1212. Jesus right where

  1213. he was.

  1214. They waited to

  1215. take Jesus in

  1216. the middle of

  1217. the night.

  1218. Why was

  1219. that?

  1220. Well the Bible

  1221. says because

  1222. they feared

  1223. the people.

  1224. They didn't

  1225. want the

  1226. uproar.

  1227. So here they

  1228. have, they

  1229. can either

  1230. accept or

  1231. they can

  1232. reject.

  1233. And so they

  1234. picked the

  1235. third route.

  1236. Now it's kind

  1237. of funny that

  1238. they picked

  1239. this because

  1240. in everything

  1241. else they

  1242. always had the

  1243. answer.

  1244. because remember

  1245. what crew

  1246. are we talking

  1247. about?

  1248. We're talking

  1249. about the

  1250. chief priests,

  1251. the scribes,

  1252. and the

  1253. elders.

  1254. They were

  1255. basically the

  1256. oversight of

  1257. everything that

  1258. went on.

  1259. They were

  1260. supposed to be

  1261. the smart ones

  1262. that could

  1263. determine, you

  1264. know, what

  1265. was right and

  1266. what was wrong.

  1267. they were

  1268. looking at

  1269. Jesus and

  1270. say, well, we

  1271. cannot tell.

  1272. now I want

  1273. you to

  1274. understand it

  1275. was kind

  1276. of a cop

  1277. out but it

  1278. was also

  1279. a problem

  1280. because their

  1281. third response

  1282. was indifference.

  1283. They didn't

  1284. want to be

  1285. embarrassed by

  1286. the situation

  1287. because no

  1288. matter what

  1289. they did,

  1290. they were

  1291. going to, you

  1292. might say they

  1293. were going to

  1294. have egg on

  1295. their face.

  1296. because publicly

  1297. they were either

  1298. going to be,

  1299. have to admit

  1300. they were wrong

  1301. about that John

  1302. was sent by

  1303. heaven or

  1304. they're going to

  1305. have egg on

  1306. their face from

  1307. the people

  1308. declaring he

  1309. was from

  1310. men.

  1311. Indifference is

  1312. often a way

  1313. just to prevent

  1314. embarrassment.

  1315. To prevent

  1316. having to make

  1317. a decision that

  1318. needs to be

  1319. made.

  1320. You know, we

  1321. see here that

  1322. they use this as

  1323. an expedient

  1324. answer.

  1325. Not a

  1326. principled

  1327. answer but an

  1328. expedient answer.

  1329. It was playing

  1330. it safe rather

  1331. than standing up

  1332. for truth.

  1333. Because the

  1334. reality is just

  1335. like these men

  1336. that day had to

  1337. make a decision

  1338. about Jesus,

  1339. when it comes to

  1340. the authority of

  1341. Jesus in your

  1342. life you have to

  1343. make a decision.

  1344. You have to make

  1345. a decision about

  1346. where you are and

  1347. where Jesus is in

  1348. your life.

  1349. Because a choice

  1350. has to be made

  1351. regarding his

  1352. authority and

  1353. regarding his

  1354. person.

  1355. Because he is

  1356. either the son of

  1357. God sent to

  1358. take away your

  1359. sin that you

  1360. might be dressed

  1361. in his righteousness

  1362. and holiness to be

  1363. able to stand

  1364. before God or

  1365. he's not.

  1366. to be indifferent

  1367. towards Christ

  1368. doesn't gain you

  1369. anything.

  1370. It might save

  1371. you face with

  1372. men and

  1373. people but it

  1374. will not save

  1375. your soul.

  1376. They had to make

  1377. a decision.

  1378. Notice here in

  1379. verse 33 when

  1380. he says and

  1381. they answered

  1382. and said unto

  1383. Jesus we

  1384. cannot tell.

  1385. And Jesus

  1386. answering saith unto

  1387. them neither do

  1388. I tell you by

  1389. what authority I

  1390. do these things.

  1391. You know that

  1392. response of

  1393. indifference led

  1394. to basically the

  1395. reality of it was

  1396. denial.

  1397. They wanted to

  1398. be able to

  1399. deny that Jesus

  1400. is who he said

  1401. he is.

  1402. They wanted to

  1403. be able to

  1404. deny that he

  1405. was the one

  1406. that was sent

  1407. by God.

  1408. He was the

  1409. one that was

  1410. foretold that

  1411. was going to

  1412. come all the

  1413. way through the

  1414. scripture.

  1415. The one who

  1416. was going to

  1417. come and he

  1418. was going to

  1419. die for our

  1420. sin upon the

  1421. cross to shed

  1422. his blood for

  1423. you and me.

  1424. That our sin

  1425. might be covered.

  1426. He came to

  1427. pay the price

  1428. that we could

  1429. not pay.

  1430. Each one

  1431. must decide

  1432. for themselves

  1433. about Jesus

  1434. and his

  1435. authority

  1436. and his

  1437. authority in

  1438. your life.

  1439. Because Jesus

  1440. has authority.

  1441. The question

  1442. is what are

  1443. you going to

  1444. do with it?

  1445. How's that

  1446. authority impacting

  1447. you?

  1448. You know

  1449. some follow

  1450. the crowd.

  1451. You know

  1452. we find some

  1453. these men

  1454. were like

  1455. well we don't

  1456. want to upset

  1457. the crowd.

  1458. The men

  1459. that were

  1460. around that

  1461. thought John

  1462. was a prophet

  1463. and if we

  1464. say not then

  1465. we're going to

  1466. upset the

  1467. crowd.

  1468. You know

  1469. sometimes we

  1470. fail to make

  1471. a decision for

  1472. Christ because

  1473. we're worried

  1474. about the

  1475. crowd.

  1476. Where is it

  1477. going to make

  1478. others think

  1479. about us?

  1480. We need to

  1481. understand very

  1482. clearly this

  1483. morning that

  1484. if you allow

  1485. others to

  1486. influence your

  1487. decision about

  1488. Jesus you're in

  1489. trouble.

  1490. because we

  1491. cannot let

  1492. others impact

  1493. that.

  1494. They were

  1495. not willing

  1496. to face

  1497. being rejected

  1498. by others.

  1499. You know

  1500. both the

  1501. religious crowd

  1502. and the

  1503. worldly crowd

  1504. will keep

  1505. you from

  1506. following Jesus

  1507. and the

  1508. authority of

  1509. his words.

  1510. You know

  1511. today we

  1512. have many

  1513. religious

  1514. people who

  1515. their authority

  1516. is in

  1517. religion.

  1518. religion.

  1519. I want you

  1520. to understand

  1521. our authority

  1522. is in the

  1523. word of God.

  1524. It's not in

  1525. a religion.

  1526. It's in

  1527. understanding our

  1528. relationship to

  1529. God.

  1530. And our

  1531. responsibility

  1532. because of

  1533. that opportunity

  1534. of relationship.

  1535. relationship.

  1536. We need to

  1537. make a

  1538. decision.

  1539. We can't

  1540. stand in

  1541. the middle.

  1542. You know

  1543. even this

  1544. morning in

  1545. people's minds

  1546. I guarantee

  1547. you there's a

  1548. fear of men

  1549. and others is a

  1550. real thing.

  1551. You know

  1552. have you ever

  1553. heard somebody

  1554. say I don't

  1555. care what

  1556. others think?

  1557. they might put

  1558. on a good

  1559. show but I

  1560. guarantee you

  1561. they still

  1562. consider what

  1563. other people

  1564. think.

  1565. What other

  1566. people think

  1567. impacts them.

  1568. It's part of

  1569. being around

  1570. people.

  1571. The question

  1572. is what

  1573. impact are

  1574. they going

  1575. to have?

  1576. What impact

  1577. do you allow

  1578. them to have?

  1579. You know

  1580. we make

  1581. decisions based

  1582. on how

  1583. others will

  1584. respond.

  1585. Fear of

  1586. man and

  1587. not by

  1588. faith in

  1589. the word

  1590. of God.

  1591. Revealing

  1592. a respect

  1593. for God

  1594. above all

  1595. else is

  1596. critical.

  1597. Think about

  1598. what Jesus

  1599. tells us

  1600. over in

  1601. Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  1602. chapter 10.

  1603. Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  1604. chapter 10

  1605. in verse

  1606. 28 he

  1607. says this

  1608. and fear

  1609. not them

  1610. which kill

  1611. the body

  1612. but are

  1613. not able

  1614. to kill

  1615. the soul

  1616. but rather

  1617. fear him

  1618. that is able

  1619. to destroy

  1620. both soul

  1621. and body

  1622. in hell.

  1623. In other

  1624. words he's

  1625. telling them

  1626. very clearly

  1627. they might

  1628. be able

  1629. to take

  1630. your physical

  1631. life but

  1632. eternity

  1633. is much

  1634. more critical.

  1635. One day

  1636. your life

  1637. here is

  1638. going to

  1639. end.

  1640. You know

  1641. the Bible

  1642. tells us

  1643. we all

  1644. have an

  1645. appointment

  1646. and you

  1647. might look

  1648. and say

  1649. if you're

  1650. young well

  1651. that appointment

  1652. is far

  1653. off.

  1654. I want

  1655. to let

  1656. you know

  1657. that you

  1658. might be

  1659. young but

  1660. it doesn't

  1661. make it

  1662. far off.

  1663. You might

  1664. be old but

  1665. it doesn't

  1666. mean it's

  1667. tomorrow

  1668. either.

  1669. The

  1670. situation is

  1671. you have

  1672. to deal

  1673. with it

  1674. now because

  1675. you don't

  1676. know what

  1677. tomorrow

  1678. brings.

  1679. To deal

  1680. and to

  1681. make a

  1682. decision

  1683. I don't

  1684. know

  1685. is not

  1686. a decision.

  1687. I don't

  1688. know

  1689. says

  1690. I'm

  1691. indifferent

  1692. or too

  1693. scared

  1694. to do

  1695. what I

  1696. need

  1697. to do.

  1698. It's a

  1699. denial

  1700. of what's

  1701. before us.

  1702. When you

  1703. trust the

  1704. Lord you

  1705. have something

  1706. more.

  1707. You know

  1708. the Bible

  1709. tells you

  1710. I want to

  1711. encourage you

  1712. on the

  1713. reality of

  1714. who Jesus

  1715. is because

  1716. I want you

  1717. to understand

  1718. what he

  1719. tells us.

  1720. Isaiah 51

  1721. in verse

  1722. 7 says

  1723. this

  1724. hearken

  1725. unto me

  1726. ye that

  1727. know

  1728. righteousness

  1729. the people

  1730. of whose

  1731. heart

  1732. is my

  1733. law.

  1734. Fear

  1735. ye not

  1736. the reproach

  1737. of men

  1738. neither be

  1739. afraid

  1740. of their

  1741. revelings.

  1742. And so

  1743. I want you

  1744. to understand

  1745. God says

  1746. if we

  1747. have him

  1748. we have

  1749. what we

  1750. need

  1751. to stand.

  1752. Matter of

  1753. fact Hebrews

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  1754. chapter 13

  1755. and verse 6

  1756. tells us

  1757. so that we

  1758. may boldly

  1759. say the

  1760. Lord is

  1761. my helper

  1762. and I

  1763. will not

  1764. fear what

  1765. man will

  1766. do

  1767. shall do

  1768. unto me.

  1769. I want you

  1770. to understand

  1771. God gives

  1772. us the

  1773. ability

  1774. he is

  1775. our

  1776. helper

  1777. to do

  1778. what we

  1779. need to

  1780. do.

  1781. To stand

  1782. for him

  1783. and today

  1784. we need

  1785. people that

  1786. are going

  1787. to stand

  1788. in the

  1789. authority

  1790. of God.

  1791. Not to

  1792. stand in

  1793. your own

  1794. authority

  1795. or somebody

  1796. else's

  1797. authority

  1798. but to

  1799. stand in

  1800. the authority

  1801. of the

  1802. word of

  1803. God.

  1804. To stand

  1805. upon the

  1806. truth.

  1807. You know

  1808. this morning

  1809. you have

  1810. an opportunity

  1811. to make

  1812. a decision

  1813. regarding

  1814. the Savior.

  1815. I want

  1816. to encourage

  1817. you today

  1818. if you

  1819. don't know

  1820. him as

  1821. Savior

  1822. I want

  1823. to ask

  1824. you a

  1825. little

  1826. question

  1827. what's

  1828. hindering

  1829. you?

  1830. What's

  1831. keeping

  1832. you from

  1833. recognizing

  1834. and calling

  1835. upon Jesus

  1836. as your

  1837. Savior?

  1838. Is it

  1839. fear of

  1840. others?

  1841. Is it

  1842. fear of

  1843. what somebody

  1844. else might

  1845. say or

  1846. do or

  1847. fear of

  1848. being

  1849. embarrassed?

  1850. You know

  1851. the devil

  1852. uses

  1853. embarrassment

  1854. to keep

  1855. us

  1856. locked

  1857. in a

  1858. lot

  1859. of

  1860. things.

  1861. The

  1862. word of

  1863. God

  1864. tells us

  1865. to confess

  1866. it and

  1867. forsake

  1868. it and

  1869. Jesus

  1870. will

  1871. cleanse

  1872. it.

  1873. You know

  1874. today if

  1875. you're a

  1876. believer I

  1877. want you to

  1878. ask yourself

  1879. another

  1880. question.

  1881. That's the

  1882. question of

  1883. authority.

  1884. authority

  1885. requires

  1886. priority.

  1887. Jesus'

  1888. authority is

  1889. present.

  1890. Jesus'

  1891. authority is

  1892. real but

  1893. what priority

  1894. will we give

  1895. to it?

  1896. We have to

  1897. give it the

  1898. priority,

  1899. make a

  1900. decision.

  1901. What has

  1902. the priority?

  1903. Is it

  1904. religion?

  1905. Is it the

  1906. fear of

  1907. others?

  1908. Is it the

  1909. fear of

  1910. embarrassment?

  1911. I want to

  1912. encourage you

  1913. today to

  1914. don't let

  1915. those things

  1916. keep you

  1917. from trusting

  1918. Christ and

  1919. his authority

  1920. today.

  1921. As heads

  1922. are bowed

  1923. and eyes

  1924. are closed

  1925. this morning.

  1926. You know

  1927. when it

  1928. comes to

  1929. making a

  1930. decision,

  1931. Jesus always

  1932. pointed them

  1933. to say you

  1934. need to make

  1935. a decision.

  1936. this morning

  1937. each one of

  1938. us in

  1939. here is

  1940. making a

  1941. decision.

  1942. Yes,

  1943. the reality

  1944. is you're

  1945. making a

  1946. decision right

  1947. now.

  1948. Is that

  1949. decision going

  1950. to be I'm

  1951. going to

  1952. keep my

  1953. authority?

  1954. I'm going

  1955. to give

  1956. others

  1957. authority in

  1958. my life?

  1959. Or if I'm

  1960. going to get

  1961. God and

  1962. his word

  1963. authority?

  1964. authority.

  1965. You're

  1966. making that

  1967. decision today

  1968. whether you

  1969. want to or

  1970. not.

  1971. That's just

  1972. the reality

  1973. of how you

  1974. respond to

  1975. the truth

  1976. of God's

  1977. word.

  1978. Don't let

  1979. other things

  1980. keep you

  1981. from coming

  1982. to him.

  1983. Heavenly

  1984. fathers, we

  1985. come before

  1986. you today.

  1987. Lord, we

  1988. just thank

  1989. you and

  1990. praise you

  1991. for the

  1992. day.

  1993. Lord, you

  1994. know each

  1995. heart here

  1996. this morning.

  1997. Lord, you

  1998. know the

  1999. problems that

  2000. we face

  2001. that

  2002. question about

  2003. who you

  2004. are and

  2005. how others

  2006. think.

  2007. Lord, the

  2008. dilemma is

  2009. real in the

  2010. lives of

  2011. individuals, but

  2012. Lord, help us

  2013. to make a

  2014. decision towards

  2015. you.

  2016. Lord, you

  2017. know each

  2018. heart, each

  2019. life here

  2020. today.

  2021. We might

  2022. hide from

  2023. one another,

  2024. Lord, but

  2025. there's no

  2026. hiding from

  2027. you.

  2028. Lord, I

  2029. pray just

  2030. work mightily

  2031. in this

  2032. opportunity,

  2033. Lord, that

  2034. we might get

  2035. serious with

  2036. who you are

  2037. today.

  2038. Lord, we

  2039. ask it all

  2040. in your

  2041. precious name.

  2042. Amen.

  2043. As heads

  2044. are bowed,

  2045. and eyes

  2046. are bowed.
