  1. We'll find our spots here. Go ahead and take your Bibles. Turn over to Song of Solomon, chapter 5.

Song of Solomon 5 chapter mention

  2. We began here last week in the book of Song of Solomon, talking about relationships,

  3. especially husband and wife. But you know, this material here, even if you're single,

  4. a lot of what we're talking about is important because it ought to be the things that you expect

  5. or things that you're planning or preparing if you ever want to be married in the future.

  6. I mean, it's one of those things that will benefit you in your relationships.

  7. And so we see here that the Song of Solomon has to do with our relationship with Christ,

  8. but it uses a picture of a husband and a wife to give us an illustration of what that's to be.

  9. But it applies practically to us as individuals in our relationships.

  10. And so let's go ahead and open in a word of prayer here this morning.

  11. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you today.

  12. Lord, we just thank you and praise you for the day, for the opportunity as we meet together.

  13. Lord, pray just have your hand upon each heart, each life here today.

  14. Lord, that we might be drawn close to you.

  15. And Lord, that you might be glorified.

  16. But Lord, we might be encouraged to understand the importance of these things in our relationship,

  17. not only with you, but with one another.

  18. And Lord, the necessity of that.

  19. And Lord, we pray just to guide and direct in the things said and done

  20. and give you all the glory and honor in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. So we began last week looking at married but not best friends.

  23. You know, that sounds like something that's a weird statement, doesn't it?

  24. But the reality is oftentimes marriages end up that that person you end up married to,

  25. there becomes a struggle in the relationship.

  26. And that struggle is due to some things that are different than it was before you were married oftentimes.

  27. Because we began looking last week with that.

  28. But let's go ahead and read our text here.

  29. Song of Solomon chapter 5 and verse 16.

Song of Solomon 5 chapter mention

  30. And we notice what God's word says.

  31. It says,

  32. His mouth is most sweet.

  33. Yea, he is altogether lovely.

  34. This is my beloved.

  35. And this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.

  36. You know, the reality that the one you're married to needs to be your friend and ought to be your best friend.

  37. They ought to be a friend that is tied to you, stuck to you.

  38. Because marriage is the highest level of relationship created by God.

  39. It's a pinnacle of relationship.

  40. It pictures God's relationship to the church.

  41. It's a high pinnacle.

  42. It's a picture that we understand practically in our lives.

  43. And so when we understand that friendship ought to be the zenith in context to our relationship.

  44. And we began looking at some key words.

  45. And last week we looked at companionship.

  46. You know, everybody wants not only someone to be married to,

  47. but somebody that's going to be their friend.

  48. Somebody that they spend time together.

  49. You know, friends by nature spend time together.

  50. They desire to hang out.

  51. They desire to be around one another.

  52. You know, they want to be together.

  53. They want to grow fonder of one another.

  54. They want to have fun together.

  55. They want to talk together.

  56. You know, oftentimes you'll hear the statement that the family that prays together stays together.

  57. But the same is true, the family that plays together stays together.

  58. Because both those elements create a camaraderie and a connection.

  59. It builds things together.

  60. You know, of how do you spend your leisure time going in different directions?

  61. Because when married couples do everything apart, it leads to a problem.

  62. There's an issue that comes up when you do everything apart.

  63. Because if you're married, you ought to desire by principle to do things together.

  64. You know?

  65. And you notice that when you were dating, when you were courting or dating, whatever term you want to put on it,

  66. there's a lot of fancy labels they want to put on things.

  67. But the reality is what's to be taking place in that dynamic is to getting to know one another

  68. and hanging out with one another.

  69. You know, when you're dating, it seems like it's hard to keep people apart.

  70. You know, they'll put all the effort and energy into making sure they can get together with the other person.

  71. But we need to remind ourselves of companionship.

  72. It ought to be the same after you're married.

  73. Now, there are some other things, but you ought to still desire to be around the other person.

  74. And to put that priority.

  75. You know, oftentimes people will say they love each other,

  76. but the follow-up question, do you like each other?

  77. You know?

  78. You ought to like being around the person you're married to.

  79. Because if you don't like them, you're definitely going to have a problem loving them.

  80. And part of that is that companionship that is there.

  81. And companionship is so important.

  82. And we look at that, but I want you to just look and remind ourselves a few things.

  83. Number one, because it's unhealthy for a married person to spend most enjoyable moments of their life

  84. in the company of somebody else.

  85. You know?

  86. I want you to understand, you ought to have the best memories with the one you're married to.

  87. Those ought to be memories that tie you together.

  88. Secondly, because pursuing your own self-interest without your spouse demonstrates selfishness.

  89. In other words, it comes about you and not about the other.

  90. The Bible tells us.

  91. Husbands, you're to love your wives, even as Christ loved the church.

  92. That's to love them as your own body.

  93. You know?

  94. That's connection.

  95. That's to say that's a priority.

  96. We need that because it will lead to a fulfilling marriage.

  97. You know, when you enjoy hanging out with somebody and you have connection and memories and all these things together,

  98. it brings fulfillment of what you've done together.

  99. You know, we understand that.

  100. And number four, because shared experiences lead to shared feelings.

  101. Shared experiences lead to shared feelings.

  102. That's an important reality when it comes to companionship.

  103. If you don't do something together, consistently together, and to hang out with one another,

  104. you're going to have a miss of feelings in the wrong places and for the wrong things.

  105. But the second word we're going to look at here today is conversation.

  106. It's conversation.

  107. You know, notice what verse 16 says here.

  108. His mouth is most sweet.

  109. Now, this isn't talking about, you know, breath mints or lip balm.

  110. I want you to understand this is one of those things.

  111. This is talking about the words that are spoken.

  112. You know?

  113. I want you to understand the dynamic.

  114. It's when he's sweet.

  115. He is sweet in what comes out of his mouth and his words.

  116. You know, we have to guard what we say sometimes.

  117. And part of conversation is always thinking before speaking.

  118. You know?

  119. And we'll talk about that a little more because the one thing you can't do is put words back.

  120. And you ought to be thinking and saying things that you ought to say.

  121. And we need to understand that men, your wife,

  122. would your wife say that you are thinking about their conversation with them?

  123. And, you know, when we understand this idea of conversation, think about this scenario.

  124. You know, a couple starts to date and, you know, it's one long conversation, you know.

  125. It's like kind of funny when people start dating, you know.

  126. They want to talk.

  127. Now, today, couples are spoiled today.

  128. I mean, I'm telling you, they're spoiled.

  129. I mean, social media and telephones and text messaging.

  130. I mean, you guys can communicate all the time.

  131. Constant communication, you know.

  132. How was your day?

  133. How was this?

  134. You know, I remember back when April and I were, when she caught my eye,

  135. we had to use this thing called mail.

  136. And he had to write it out.

  137. And he had to put it in an envelope.

  138. And put a stamp on it.

  139. And he had to put it in the box.

  140. Then you pray it got to the other end.

  141. And they would get it.

  142. And the first thing they'd do is open it up.

  143. And then they would write a reply.

  144. Lick the envelope, put a stamp on it.

  145. Send it back.

  146. You ever write, Gene?

  147. We were in a meeting together.

  148. Oh, that's what I guess.

  149. You guys hung out quite a bit there.

  150. So I know where you were headed afterward.

  151. But, you know, you have this idea of communication.

  152. But when the conversation that, you know, you always want to communicate.

  153. And when together they would talk, when apart they would talk,

  154. when they were on the phone they would talk.

  155. You know, and April and I, you know, we were the generation that if we got an opportunity

  156. to talk on the phone, it was pretty neat.

  157. You know?

  158. I remember we used to have in our dining room, we had the telephone,

  159. and we had the super long stretchy cord.

  160. You know, that way you could get clear around into the other room.

  161. Now, some of you are looking at me like, what are you talking about?

  162. Some of you are going, I remember that.

  163. You know, private conversation was you could follow where the phone was by the cord where

  164. it was stretched into, you know.

  165. But the reality is it hasn't changed because when people begin dating or they want to court one another,

  166. whatever label you want to put on it,

  167. communication is a key part of that, isn't it?

  168. Communication is central to that.

  169. And then they get used to that dynamic, you know, and everything's really nifty,

  170. and then they get married.

  171. And the business of being a couple begins to take priorities.

  172. Because, you know, it's amazing, you had the same responsibilities while you were dating,

  173. but suddenly you have, these are more brought into daily life, you might say,

  174. of taking care of a place to stay, and food, and how your job interacts with that.

  175. And then subjects come up like in-laws, and outlaws, and finances, and kids.

  176. You know, I want you to understand it isn't long before you quit communicating.

  177. And you're distracted by other things.

  178. You know, we need to understand this idea of communication.

  179. Because oftentimes we lack communication at home,

  180. but then your spouse notices you can carry on a long conversation

  181. with somebody at church or work.

  182. Why can't you talk to me?

  183. You know, that happens a lot in marriages.

  184. If it's not guarded.

  185. If it's not intentional.

  186. Because what happens when that begins, resentment sets in.

  187. And then somebody someplace else catches their attention because they talk to them.

  188. You know, we need to guard our conversation.

  189. You know?

  190. When we understand that it becomes a problem,

  191. because when a couple, when one of them begins talking to another person,

  192. now David, this isn't the place to talk.

  193. You're just talking about how we need to talk to each other.

  194. I just embarrass Keira.

  195. They're a young couple.

  196. They're still on the honeymoon.

  197. That's why the honeymoon ought to keep going.

  198. That communication is important.

  199. Because when somebody starts talking to somebody outside the relationship,

  200. it always leads to a problem in the relationship.

  201. When problems in a relationship begin getting discussed with somebody else

  202. because they're willing to listen,

  203. it becomes a problem in the relationship.

  204. Because the problem is it soon leads to divorce.

  205. And sadly,

  206. oftentimes, one of them,

  207. it leads to divorce because the one

  208. begins to give affections

  209. to the person that's talking to them.

  210. And then the two that are cheating get together and get married,

  211. and the cycle starts all over again.

  212. That's a reality.

  213. But I want you to understand

  214. that God tells us it doesn't have to be that way.

  215. It doesn't need to be that way

  216. because when we understand

  217. there's some things that close friends do.

  218. You know,

  219. one is they share themselves with each other.

  220. You know,

  221. your spouse ought to be somebody

  222. that you can pour your heart out to,

  223. that you're connected to.

  224. You know,

  225. they confide in each other.

  226. You know,

  227. the confiding in each other,

  228. your spouse ought to know things about you

  229. that nobody else knows.

  230. And there ought to be a confidence

  231. that there's a confidentiality

  232. in what they know.

  233. There's a reality that takes place

  234. when you start talking about your spouse

  235. to somebody else,

  236. there'll be a problem

  237. because you've broken confidentiality.

  238. They ought to learn more about one another.

  239. You know?

  240. You need to continue to learn.

  241. You know,

  242. oftentimes people think,

  243. well,

  244. this is the person that I married

  245. and they're always going to stay the same.

  246. Then you get married

  247. and find out that you look at them

  248. a couple years later

  249. and go,

  250. who are you?

  251. You're not necessarily the one that I married,

  252. but you know,

  253. both of us change.

  254. And you need to keep learning

  255. about one another

  256. and keep that connection.

  257. You know?

  258. They discuss their innermost thoughts,

  259. ideals,

  260. and goals with each other.

  261. You know?

  262. Close friends talk.

  263. You know?

  264. I want you to understand.

  265. Take a look over

  266. and do a Proverbs chapter 27

    Proverbs 27 chapter mention

  267. for a moment.

  268. Proverbs chapter 27.

    Proverbs 27 chapter mention

  269. Look here down here in verse 9.

  270. Proverbs 27 and verse 9 says,

  271. Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart.

  272. So doth the sweetness of a man's friend

  273. by hearty counsel.

  274. Communication.

  275. Communication is key

  276. because,

  277. you know,

  278. we understand that,

  279. you know,

  280. oftentimes guys are drawn to gals.

  281. You know,

  282. you always,

  283. when you're a gal,

  284. they always put on the perfume

  285. and it's like,

  286. man,

  287. I like that perfume.

  288. You know,

  289. you can smell them

  290. when they come in the room.

  291. You know,

  292. it's just,

  293. you know,

  294. you have that sense,

  295. but the verse says

  296. that as pleasant

  297. as that sense is,

  298. so is a good conversation

  299. that connects.

  300. You know,

  301. I want you to understand

  302. the reality

  303. of communication.

  304. You know?

  305. And the other thing

  306. we need to keep in mind

  307. is that women

  308. generally have a greater need

  309. for conversation

  310. than men.

  311. You know?

  312. God made us different

  313. for a reason.

  314. But does it mean

  315. that it isn't there

  316. for a reason?

  317. And we have to learn

  318. to communicate

  319. because

  320. when we understand

  321. that it helps

  322. her feel united

  323. and bonded

  324. with her man

  325. when there's communication.

  326. You know,

  327. communication

  328. in a relationship

  329. is important

  330. because it makes

  331. them feel

  332. as a priority.

  333. It makes them feel

  334. not just something

  335. that you have

  336. on the shelf.

  337. You know,

  338. you laughed today

  339. about people talking

  340. about getting

  341. a trophy wife,

  342. you know?

  343. Guys,

  344. your wife is not

  345. a trophy.

  346. Trophies are won

  347. and set on the shelf

  348. and appreciated.

  349. Your wife is not

  350. to be put on the shelf,

  351. but she is to be

  352. appreciated all the time.

  353. Brother Gene?

  354. I read one time

  355. that for every word

  356. a man speaks,

  357. a woman speaks

  358. 27 words.

  359. We'll move on.

  360. See,

  361. that's the reason

  362. preachers avoid

  363. this topic

  364. because it gets you

  365. in trouble,

  366. you know?

  367. But no,

  368. seriously though,

  369. I mean,

  370. the reality is

  371. it's communication

  372. needs to take place.

  373. There needs to be

  374. a bond that is there

  375. because that's how

  376. they bond,

  377. how they connect.

  378. You know,

  379. it's often funny

  380. when a man ignores

  381. his wife all day

  382. and then suddenly

  383. at 10 p.m.

  384. turns his attention

  385. on her,

  386. it's not going

  387. to make her feel

  388. like she's connected,

  389. that she wants

  390. to spend any more

  391. time with you

  392. if you ignored her

  393. all day, guys.

  394. You need to spend

  395. time with your wife

  396. to be able to enjoy

  397. those things.

  398. And, you know,

  399. so we know

  400. and understand

  401. that when you're

  402. first getting together,

  403. when you're courting

  404. or dating,

  405. you know,

  406. two of the biggest

  407. things that get done

  408. during that time

  409. is one,

  410. is getting to know

  411. each other better.

  412. You know,

  413. you spend a lot

  414. of time finding out

  415. who this person is,

  416. what are their goals,

  417. what do they want

  418. to do,

  419. you know,

  420. how do they think

  421. on this or that

  422. or what is the,

  423. how do they feel

  424. about that,

  425. you know,

  426. and when we do

  427. counseling,

  428. premarital counseling,

  429. we make sure

  430. couples talk about

  431. a lot of uncomfortable

  432. things sometimes.

  433. but it's good

  434. to make sure

  435. those conversations

  436. take place

  437. because a lot

  438. of those things

  439. are important.

  440. It may not

  441. seem important

  442. at the moment

  443. to them,

  444. but how that

  445. other person's

  446. thinking is important

  447. in the rest

  448. of the relationship.

  449. Let me give you

  450. one that hits home

  451. today very quickly

  452. with a lot of people

  453. when you have a

  454. conversation about kids,

  455. you know,

  456. because oftentimes

  457. you'll find somebody

  458. has,

  459. comes in with a mindset

  460. and they never ask

  461. the other person

  462. what do you think

  463. about children.

  464. Then they get married

  465. and the one wants

  466. to have ten

  467. and the other says

  468. I don't want any,

  469. you know,

  470. that's a big problem.

  471. Now there's nothing

  472. wrong with having

  473. ten kids.

  474. If you tell your

  475. wife that guy,

  476. she's probably

  477. going to look

  478. at you

  479. and I would,

  480. I'd definitely

  481. stay out of arm's length

  482. so,

  483. because you'll

  484. get the look.

  485. But I want you

  486. to understand

  487. that's how you

  488. find out

  489. but you ought

  490. to be on

  491. the same page.

  492. What's the

  493. expectation?

  494. You know,

  495. what are you

  496. thinking?

  497. How are you

  498. processing those

  499. things,

  500. you know?

  501. Because that's

  502. important.

  503. There's a big

  504. difference between

  505. three kids

  506. and ten kids.

  507. and their

  508. thinking.

  509. Those are

  510. things that need

  511. to be discussed

  512. beforehand to know

  513. how's the other

  514. person thinking.

  515. Now that doesn't

  516. mean things can't

  517. transpire later,

  518. but you need to

  519. make sure that

  520. you're honest with

  521. one another of what

  522. you're thinking.

  523. Honesty there is

  524. important because you

  525. get to know one

  526. another,

  527. you know?

  528. Secondly,

  529. to convey how much

  530. you love each

  531. other.

  532. you know,

  533. we talked about

  534. that,

  535. that our

  536. relationship

  537. needs to be

  538. about that

  539. connection

  540. that is there,

  541. that companionship

  542. and that comes

  543. about that needs

  544. to be first.

  545. And we don't

  546. need to,

  547. these goals don't

  548. need to be dropped

  549. after the wedding.

  550. You know,

  551. oftentimes we spend

  552. a lot of time

  553. getting to know

  554. somebody and

  555. letting them know

  556. how much they

  557. love them.

  558. We love them and

  559. then you get

  560. married and life

  561. kicks in and all

  562. that takes a

  563. back seat sometimes.

  564. And sometimes

  565. after you get

  566. married and you

  567. have kids,

  568. it takes a lot

  569. of work to

  570. communicate.

  571. Because mom's

  572. there and she's

  573. got kids at home

  574. and, you know,

  575. you got little

  576. ones running all

  577. over and climbing

  578. the curtains and

  579. breaking things and

  580. making a mess and,

  581. you know,

  582. you come home

  583. from work,

  584. guys,

  585. and you step in

  586. the house and the

  587. first thing you

  588. step on is a

  589. Lego.

  590. Lego just

  591. sets the tone.

  592. How many have

  593. ever stepped on

  594. a Lego with

  595. your bare foot?

  596. And you know

  597. what I'm talking

  598. about.

  599. I love Legos,

  600. but on the floor

  601. those things are

  602. wicked.

  603. You think you

  604. stepped on a

  605. spike when you

  606. step on them,

  607. you know,

  608. it's like,

  609. but those things

  610. are going to

  611. happen.

  612. I want to

  613. encourage you to

  614. consider you

  615. don't want to

  616. keep those things

  617. or let them

  618. hinder the

  619. communication.

  620. That's the

  621. reason you have

  622. to be intentional

  623. because you

  624. both can be

  625. tired.

  626. There's both

  627. things that can

  628. set you off.

  629. I mean,

  630. guys,

  631. you might come

  632. home and your

  633. wife's been

  634. home with the

  635. kids all day

  636. and they're

  637. teaching school

  638. and all this

  639. and the sink

  640. is full of

  641. dishes and the

  642. supper isn't

  643. done and,

  644. you know,

  645. you're looking

  646. like,

  647. what are you

  648. doing all day?

  649. You know,

  650. and I'll give

  651. you a clue.

  652. Don't ask her

  653. what she's been

  654. doing all day

  655. if you see that

  656. situation,

  657. guys.

  658. The best

  659. thing you can

  660. do is go

  661. over and

  662. start doing

  663. the dishes.

  664. you know,

  665. we can laugh

  666. about it,

  667. but the

  668. reality is

  669. that things

  670. that were no

  671. problem during

  672. courtship can

  673. often be a

  674. problem afterwards

  675. because courtship

  676. for guys is

  677. often a conquering

  678. orientation.

  679. it's like,

  680. I'm going to

  681. get her

  682. because she's

  683. the prize.

  684. And as men,

  685. we often think

  686. like that,

  687. that that's,

  688. that's,

  689. that's,

  690. that's what I'm

  691. after.

  692. That's my goal.

  693. That's my

  694. objective.

  695. And it's easy

  696. to put them

  697. as a secondary

  698. and move on

  699. to another

  700. goal afterwards.

  701. be careful

  702. not to set

  703. that aside

  704. because now

  705. that once you

  706. get married,

  707. oftentimes it's

  708. easy to,

  709. to get a new

  710. goal.

  711. And I do want

  712. you to get a

  713. new goal after

  714. you're married

  715. because beforehand

  716. your goal is to

  717. get her.

  718. Your new goal

  719. after is to

  720. keep her.

  721. that's a

  722. longer

  723. objective.

  724. Because your

  725. desire ought to

  726. always be that

  727. this will be the

  728. one that I

  729. spend the rest

  730. of my life

  731. with unless

  732. God interacts.

  733. Because

  734. sometimes,

  735. I want you to

  736. understand,

  737. you ought to do

  738. your best to

  739. keep marriage

  740. together.

  741. You know,

  742. often some of

  743. the studies

  744. they've had

  745. amongst marriage

  746. counselors say

  747. that a couple

  748. needs to talk

  749. at least an

  750. hour per day.

  751. And guys are

  752. all thinking,

  753. that's a lot.

  754. And the women

  755. are like,

  756. when are we

  757. going to get

  758. started?

  759. But I want you

  760. to understand,

  761. most couples

  762. don't even spend

  763. six minutes a

  764. day.

  765. communicating.

  766. You know,

  767. most of that

  768. turns out just

  769. to be what's

  770. pressing at the

  771. moment.

  772. You know,

  773. the dishwasher

  774. broke,

  775. or the car

  776. needs the oil

  777. changed,

  778. or you know,

  779. something

  780. happened at

  781. work,

  782. or something

  783. takes place

  784. over there,

  785. or you come

  786. home and the

  787. kid has an

  788. ear infection,

  789. and you know,

  790. all the different

  791. things of life.

  792. You spend a lot

  793. of time talking

  794. about things,

  795. but not things

  796. of substance.

  797. You need to

  798. make sure to

  799. maintain,

  800. those things,

  801. and to

  802. understand,

  803. you know,

  804. there used to

  805. be an old

  806. joke,

  807. you know,

  808. when I was

  809. growing up,

  810. you know,

  811. amongst some

  812. of the older

  813. guys,

  814. they'll look

  815. and say,

  816. well,

  817. I told her I

  818. loved her once,

  819. and if I

  820. changed my

  821. mind,

  822. I'll let

  823. her know.

  824. you know,

  825. I've heard a few

  826. people say it,

  827. but the

  828. reality is,

  829. is she needs

  830. to hear that,

  831. and that

  832. communication,

  833. and so we

  834. need that

  835. mindset,

  836. and one of

  837. the things

  838. that we'll

  839. find is,

  840. things that

  841. we have

  842. in today's

  843. society sometimes

  844. even makes it

  845. worse,

  846. you know,

  847. it used to

  848. be the

  849. husband would

  850. come home

  851. and get the

  852. newspaper and

  853. be reading the

  854. newspaper,

  855. but today we

  856. have some

  857. things that are

  858. even worse

  859. than that in

  860. my mind,

  861. because you

  862. can get caught

  863. up in YouTube

  864. and social media,

  865. you know,

  866. you can spend

  867. hours there and

  868. never talk,

  869. you know,

  870. some couples

  871. stop talking,

  872. you know,

  873. why does that

  874. happen?

  875. Well,

  876. one is they

  877. get too busy

  878. with work,

  879. you know,

  880. sometimes there's

  881. things that just

  882. need to be done,

  883. but when that's

  884. the rule rather

  885. than the exception,

  886. it begins to

  887. cause a problem

  888. to get too

  889. overwhelmed with

  890. work,

  891. you know,

  892. today work can

  893. be too

  894. overwhelming and

  895. we need to be

  896. careful and guard

  897. that because we

  898. need to maintain

  899. that communication,

  900. different interests,

  901. you know,

  902. we talked about

  903. that last week,

  904. you know,

  905. you guys need to

  906. find something

  907. common that you

  908. do together,

  909. you know,

  910. what that is

  911. doesn't matter

  912. as much as

  913. the doing,

  914. that's something

  915. that fits you

  916. guys,

  917. you know,

  918. to be able to

  919. do those things

  920. together,

  921. selfishness,

  922. you know,

  923. we develop

  924. other priorities

  925. we consider

  926. more important,

  927. but in reality

  928. they're not

  929. because remember

  930. the person

  931. you married

  932. is only second

  933. in relationship

  934. to God,

  935. and if you're

  936. on a right

  937. relationship with

  938. God,

  939. you're going to

  940. want to maintain

  941. a right relationship

  942. with your spouse

  943. because that's

  944. going to be

  945. because that's

  946. what God

  947. tells us to

  948. do,

  949. you know,

  950. fighting,

  951. you know,

  952. some people

  953. stop talking

  954. because it

  955. always turns

  956. into an

  957. argument,

  958. you know,

  959. some don't

  960. cope well

  961. with problems

  962. and their

  963. conversations

  964. often turn

  965. into fights

  966. so they stop

  967. wanting to

  968. talk because

  969. it just never

  970. turns out

  971. well,

  972. so I'm

  973. going to

  974. give you

  975. a little

  976. help today

  977. and we're

  978. going to

  979. talk about

  980. some enemies

  981. of good

  982. conversation

  983. for a

  984. moment

  985. because

  986. sometimes

  987. they turn

  988. into fights

  989. because we're

  990. not communicating

  991. correctly,

  992. we're not

  993. communicating

  994. by first

  995. thinking

  996. before speaking

  997. because

  998. words can't

  999. be put

  1000. back.

  1001. Throw

  1002. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1003. chapter 4

  1004. for a

  1005. moment,

  1006. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:29

  1007. 4,

  1008. verse 29,

  1009. because

  1010. enemies of

  1011. good

  1012. conversation,

  1013. the first

  1014. one is,

  1015. is using

  1016. words as

  1017. punishment.

  1018. married

  1019. couples can

  1020. very easily

  1021. fall into

  1022. the trap

  1023. of trying

  1024. to punish

  1025. the other

  1026. person by

  1027. what they

  1028. say.

  1029. Words

  1030. become

  1031. tools to

  1032. tear down.

  1033. Notice

  1034. what Ephesians

  1035. 4,

  1036. 29 says,

  1037. it says

  1038. this,

  1039. it says,

  1040. let no

  1041. corrupt

  1042. communication

  1043. proceed out

  1044. of your

  1045. mouth,

  1046. but that

  1047. which is

  1048. good to

  1049. the use

  1050. of edifying

  1051. that it

  1052. may minister

  1053. grace unto

  1054. the hearers.

  1055. I want you

  1056. to understand

  1057. you can

  1058. never take

  1059. words back.

  1060. That's

  1061. reason with

  1062. what we

  1063. speak,

  1064. we need

  1065. to be

  1066. careful

  1067. with.

  1068. Now,

  1069. I'm not

  1070. going to

  1071. ask for

  1072. a show

  1073. of hands,

  1074. but how

  1075. many could

  1076. say there's

  1077. been a

  1078. time in

  1079. my life

  1080. that I

  1081. said

  1082. something I

  1083. wish I

  1084. could put

  1085. back?

  1086. I think

  1087. we could

  1088. all say

  1089. we're

  1090. guilty.

  1091. Why?

  1092. Because

  1093. sometimes

  1094. we spoke

  1095. without

  1096. what?

  1097. Thinking.

  1098. We spoke

  1099. from emotion,

  1100. strictly

  1101. from feeling.

  1102. You know,

  1103. one of the

  1104. things I've

  1105. learned that's

  1106. a good rule

  1107. of thumb,

  1108. you need to

  1109. remember that

  1110. feelings are

  1111. inputs,

  1112. feelings are

  1113. not substance.

  1114. Feelings are

  1115. things that

  1116. influence you,

  1117. but they

  1118. should not

  1119. direct you.

  1120. They're not

  1121. guidance.

  1122. feelings are

  1123. there,

  1124. but they

  1125. should not

  1126. guide us

  1127. in what

  1128. we do

  1129. because that's

  1130. when we

  1131. blow up

  1132. because we

  1133. feel angry,

  1134. so we're

  1135. going to

  1136. blow up.

  1137. There may

  1138. be a

  1139. legitimate

  1140. reason you

  1141. feel angry.

  1142. There's some

  1143. things that

  1144. ought to make

  1145. you angry,

  1146. the Bible

  1147. tells us.

  1148. But those

  1149. feelings need

  1150. to be kept

  1151. in context,

  1152. to be kept

  1153. in the right

  1154. way of

  1155. using them.

  1156. one rule

  1157. of thumb

  1158. you can

  1159. think about,

  1160. have you

  1161. ever

  1162. regretted

  1163. words you

  1164. didn't

  1165. say?

  1166. You know,

  1167. that's a

  1168. much smaller

  1169. list,

  1170. isn't it?

  1171. Very rarely

  1172. do you regret

  1173. what's not

  1174. said,

  1175. but a lot

  1176. more times

  1177. we regret

  1178. what is

  1179. said

  1180. because you

  1181. can't put

  1182. them back.

  1183. You know,

  1184. we need to

  1185. understand we

  1186. can't just

  1187. fly off the

  1188. cuff,

  1189. we should

  1190. talk,

  1191. but we

  1192. need to

  1193. wait until

  1194. we can

  1195. say it

  1196. properly.

  1197. You know,

  1198. using words

  1199. as punishment

  1200. gets you

  1201. in trouble.

  1202. Second thing

  1203. is using

  1204. words to

  1205. force

  1206. agreement.

  1207. You know,

  1208. words are

  1209. masterful

  1210. tools you

  1211. can use.

  1212. To force

  1213. agreement is

  1214. to making

  1215. the other

  1216. person have

  1217. to agree

  1218. with you.

  1219. I'll give

  1220. you a little

  1221. clue.

  1222. When you

  1223. have two

  1224. people,

  1225. you're

  1226. going to

  1227. have two

  1228. different

  1229. opinions.

  1230. They may

  1231. vary slightly,

  1232. but there'll

  1233. be some

  1234. differences.

  1235. Or there

  1236. might be

  1237. big

  1238. differences.

  1239. Look what

  1240. James chapter

    James 1 chapter mention

  1241. 1 tells us.

  1242. Look over

  1243. there in

  1244. James chapter

    James 1 chapter mention

  1245. 1.

  1246. Look at

  1247. verse 19.

  1248. James

  1249. 1.19

  1250. tells us

  1251. this.

  1252. It says,

  1253. Wherefore,

  1254. my beloved

  1255. brethren,

  1256. let every

  1257. man be

  1258. swift to

  1259. hear,

  1260. slow to

  1261. speak,

  1262. and slow

  1263. to wrath.

  1264. Is there

  1265. anything more

  1266. annoying than

  1267. someone wanting

  1268. to force

  1269. their way

  1270. upon you

  1271. and they're

  1272. always right?

  1273. You need to

  1274. agree with me.

  1275. The reality

  1276. is you can't

  1277. make somebody

  1278. or force

  1279. anybody to

  1280. believe anything.

  1281. they may

  1282. nod their

  1283. head,

  1284. they may

  1285. agree with

  1286. you on

  1287. the surface,

  1288. but what

  1289. they're thinking

  1290. is,

  1291. I'll agree

  1292. with them

  1293. outwardly just

  1294. so they'll

  1295. be quiet.

  1296. It

  1297. happens.

  1298. Forced

  1299. agreement.

  1300. third

  1301. thing is

  1302. dwelling on

  1303. mistakes,

  1304. past and

  1305. present.

  1306. One of the

  1307. biggest things

  1308. in a

  1309. relationship

  1310. that happens

  1311. is people

  1312. will bring

  1313. up the

  1314. past over

  1315. and over

  1316. and over

  1317. and over.

  1318. They'll

  1319. dig up

  1320. things that

  1321. are supposed

  1322. to be

  1323. forgotten

  1324. and forgiven

  1325. and the

  1326. next

  1327. disagreement

  1328. they have

  1329. instead of

  1330. discussing

  1331. what's on

  1332. the table.

  1333. They bring

  1334. up,

  1335. well,

  1336. you did

  1337. this.

  1338. That's a

  1339. destruction

  1340. to a

  1341. relationship.

  1342. Let's look

  1343. on a few

  1344. things here.

  1345. Let's get

  1346. some help

  1347. here this

  1348. morning.

  1349. Let's get

  1350. Philippians

  1351. 3.13.

  1352. Who's got

  1353. that one

  1354. for me?

  1355. Philippians

  1356. 3.13.

  1357. Don,

  1358. you got

  1359. that one?

  1360. Joe,

  1361. can you

  1362. get me

  1363. Colossians

  1364. 2?

  1365. Or,

  1366. excuse me,

  1367. Colossians

  1368. 3.12

  1369. and 13.

  1370. Colossians

  1371. 3.

  1372. 12 and

  1373. 13.

  1374. Who's got

  1375. Philippians

  1376. 3.13?

  1377. Brother Don?

  1378. Okay.

  1379. Remember

  1380. that it's

  1381. forgetting

  1382. that which

  1383. is what?

  1384. Behind.

  1385. You know,

  1386. dragging up

  1387. the past

  1388. when the

  1389. past is

  1390. supposed to

  1391. be dealt

  1392. with will

  1393. do nothing

  1394. but destroy

  1395. a relationship.

  1396. What's

  1397. Colossians

  1398. 3.12

  1399. and 13

  1400. tell us?

  1401. What does

  1402. Colossians

  1403. 3.12

  1404. and 13

  1405. tell us?

  1406. What does

  1407. mean?

  1408. What does

  1409. mean?

  1410. Okay.

  1411. One of the

  1412. biggest things

  1413. of communication

  1414. in marriage

  1415. is learning

  1416. how to

  1417. forgive one

  1418. another.

  1419. Because if

  1420. you haven't

  1421. figured it

  1422. out,

  1423. when you

  1424. hang out

  1425. with somebody

  1426. long enough,

  1427. sooner or

  1428. later they're

  1429. going to

  1430. do something

  1431. that makes

  1432. you mad.

  1433. Amen?

  1434. I mean,

  1435. that's just

  1436. by nature.

  1437. When you

  1438. hang out

  1439. with somebody

  1440. long enough,

  1441. pretty soon

  1442. something's

  1443. going to

  1444. stir up

  1445. and something's

  1446. going to

  1447. cause a

  1448. conflict.

  1449. That stirs a

  1450. conflict between

  1451. you.

  1452. It can even be

  1453. things from the

  1454. outside that

  1455. stir a conflict

  1456. between you.

  1457. It's not

  1458. necessarily even

  1459. directly with

  1460. you,

  1461. but it can

  1462. cause a

  1463. conflict.

  1464. And dealing

  1465. with those

  1466. things and

  1467. to deal

  1468. with them

  1469. properly,

  1470. just like

  1471. you would

  1472. anybody else,

  1473. you know,

  1474. vows of

  1475. mercy,

  1476. kindness,

  1477. humbleness

  1478. of mind,

  1479. meekness,

  1480. long-suffering,

  1481. forbearing,

  1482. you know,

  1483. forgiving,

  1484. you know.

  1485. Those don't

  1486. just matter

  1487. with interactions

  1488. at church,

  1489. they're more

  1490. important in

  1491. your interaction

  1492. with your

  1493. spouse.

  1494. And learning

  1495. to deal

  1496. with those

  1497. things.

  1498. And so,

  1499. but some

  1500. develop a

  1501. critical spirit

  1502. to the point

  1503. that you feel

  1504. you can't do

  1505. anything right.

  1506. You know,

  1507. sometimes a

  1508. spouse can

  1509. beat the

  1510. other one

  1511. down with

  1512. the past

  1513. so hard

  1514. that it

  1515. limits and

  1516. hinders the

  1517. relationship.

  1518. You know,

  1519. that critical

  1520. spirit,

  1521. because the

  1522. other person

  1523. every time

  1524. they're together

  1525. is looking

  1526. to create

  1527. a problem

  1528. or to

  1529. point out

  1530. a problem.

  1531. That is

  1532. a problem

  1533. to itself.

  1534. You know,

  1535. think about

  1536. what we talked

  1537. about just a

  1538. few weeks ago

  1539. when it came

  1540. to forgiveness.

  1541. When Paul

  1542. talked about

  1543. 2 Corinthians

  1544. 2, 7,

  1545. it says,

  1546. so that

  1547. contrariise

  1548. you ought

  1549. rather to

  1550. forgive him

  1551. and comfort

  1552. him,

  1553. lest perhaps

  1554. such a one

  1555. should be

  1556. swallowed up

  1557. with over

  1558. much sorrow.

  1559. You know,

  1560. oftentimes,

  1561. beating somebody

  1562. up with the

  1563. past isn't

  1564. going to

  1565. accomplish what

  1566. you hope to

  1567. accomplish.

  1568. It hinders

  1569. what you're

  1570. hoping to

  1571. accomplish.

  1572. Unless your

  1573. mission is just

  1574. to destroy

  1575. them,

  1576. which then

  1577. that's another

  1578. problem.

  1579. But as your

  1580. spouse,

  1581. it ought to

  1582. be to build

  1583. them up

  1584. and encourage

  1585. them.

  1586. And to do

  1587. those things

  1588. and,

  1589. you know,

  1590. to talk about

  1591. it in the

  1592. right way,

  1593. you know,

  1594. and some

  1595. people,

  1596. you know,

  1597. in life,

  1598. you need to

  1599. realize that

  1600. some people

  1601. just have a

  1602. negative spirit.

  1603. They'll complain

  1604. about anything.

  1605. you know,

  1606. like I've met

  1607. a few people,

  1608. if I gave

  1609. them $20,

  1610. they'd complain

  1611. I didn't

  1612. give them

  1613. two tens.

  1614. You know,

  1615. have you ever

  1616. met anybody

  1617. like that?

  1618. You know,

  1619. they just got

  1620. a negative

  1621. thing,

  1622. you know,

  1623. everything's a

  1624. complaint,

  1625. everything's a

  1626. problem.

  1627. You know?

  1628. In a marriage,

  1629. if we hold

  1630. things in,

  1631. we can develop

  1632. a closed-off

  1633. spirit that

  1634. builds and

  1635. builds until

  1636. finally things

  1637. break apart.

  1638. I want you

  1639. to understand

  1640. there's also

  1641. some things

  1642. here,

  1643. quick,

  1644. we want to

  1645. cover it,

  1646. that are

  1647. friends of

  1648. good conversation.

  1649. Friends of

  1650. good conversation.

  1651. One is

  1652. undivided

  1653. attention.

  1654. Having a

  1655. conversation

  1656. where you can

  1657. actually look

  1658. at one another

  1659. and pay

  1660. attention to

  1661. one another.

  1662. You know?

  1663. Have you ever

  1664. noticed that when

  1665. people are dating,

  1666. oftentimes you

  1667. know,

  1668. it's like to

  1669. hear them

  1670. talk.

  1671. You know,

  1672. look at each

  1673. other in the

  1674. eye.

  1675. And the

  1676. problem is,

  1677. is that after

  1678. they're married,

  1679. oftentimes they're

  1680. distracted.

  1681. But that

  1682. attention is

  1683. important.

  1684. You know,

  1685. 1 Peter 3,

  1686. 8 says,

  1687. finally be ye

  1688. all of one

  1689. mind,

  1690. having compassion,

  1691. one of

  1692. another,

  1693. love his

  1694. brother,

  1695. be pitiful,

  1696. be courteous.

  1697. You know?

  1698. Oftentimes we

  1699. need to draw

  1700. our attention

  1701. to intentionally

  1702. look and

  1703. to listen.

  1704. Because,

  1705. consider,

  1706. what does it

  1707. say when

  1708. somebody's

  1709. looking at

  1710. you when

  1711. you're talking

  1712. to them?

  1713. That you're

  1714. listening.

  1715. That you're

  1716. paying attention.

  1717. You know?

  1718. Now,

  1719. as parents in

  1720. the room,

  1721. how often have

  1722. you told your

  1723. kids,

  1724. hey,

  1725. look at me?

  1726. I know that

  1727. never came out

  1728. of your mouth,

  1729. did it?

  1730. That's that

  1731. moment when

  1732. you think,

  1733. oh no,

  1734. my parents

  1735. just showed

  1736. up.

  1737. But to

  1738. look at

  1739. them,

  1740. you know,

  1741. to understand,

  1742. you're not

  1743. only teaching

  1744. your kids to

  1745. listen,

  1746. you're teaching

  1747. them a common

  1748. courtesy,

  1749. and the same

  1750. courtesy needs

  1751. to play in

  1752. our relationship.

  1753. also next is

  1754. giving a

  1755. response.

  1756. Giving a

  1757. response.

  1758. 1 Peter 3,

  1759. 7 says,

  1760. likewise,

  1761. ye husbands,

  1762. dwell with

  1763. them according

  1764. to knowledge,

  1765. giving honor

  1766. unto the

  1767. wife.

  1768. You know,

  1769. one thing

  1770. that will

  1771. help you

  1772. is to be

  1773. sure what

  1774. they are

  1775. saying.

  1776. You know,

  1777. communication

  1778. gets us in

  1779. trouble when

  1780. we think

  1781. we heard

  1782. what somebody

  1783. says.

  1784. And one

  1785. of the

  1786. things that

  1787. will help

  1788. that is

  1789. to repeat

  1790. it back.

  1791. You know?

  1792. So what

  1793. you're saying

  1794. is, am I

  1795. hearing you

  1796. right?

  1797. What you're

  1798. telling me

  1799. is, you

  1800. know, to

  1801. make sure

  1802. that you

  1803. can remove

  1804. a lot of

  1805. conflict by

  1806. confirming

  1807. what's actually

  1808. being said.

  1809. And that's

  1810. something we

  1811. always have to

  1812. work on.

  1813. Because how

  1814. often have

  1815. you thought

  1816. you heard

  1817. something and

  1818. it wasn't

  1819. what they

  1820. said?

  1821. that's

  1822. also

  1823. important

  1824. in the

  1825. book

  1826. area of

  1827. the

  1828. reading

  1829. and

  1830. back

  1831. telling you

  1832. understood it.

  1833. because sometimes

  1834. words get

  1835. mixed up,

  1836. don't they?

  1837. Or what

  1838. you think

  1839. they said

  1840. isn't what

  1841. they're really

  1842. saying.

  1843. To understand

  1844. that's important

  1845. to grab a

  1846. hold of

  1847. because,

  1848. you know,

  1849. obviously we're

  1850. not, we're

  1851. talking about

  1852. meaningful

  1853. conversation.

  1854. You know, I'll

  1855. give you a little

  1856. clue, guys.

  1857. If she asks

  1858. for a tissue,

  1859. don't say, so

  1860. you're saying,

  1861. hand me a

  1862. tissue, right?

  1863. That's not

  1864. going to

  1865. score you

  1866. points,

  1867. okay?

  1868. I'll just

  1869. remove that

  1870. off the

  1871. table to

  1872. keep you

  1873. out of

  1874. trouble,

  1875. you know?

  1876. Because I

  1877. know somebody

  1878. will go home

  1879. today and

  1880. is going to

  1881. be a smart

  1882. aleck.

  1883. They're just

  1884. doing what

  1885. the preacher

  1886. told me to

  1887. do.

  1888. But rather,

  1889. you know,

  1890. to communicate,

  1891. you know, so

  1892. you're saying

  1893. you're hurt

  1894. when I

  1895. commented about

  1896. this or that,

  1897. and, you

  1898. know, it

  1899. gives you an

  1900. opportunity to

  1901. deal with what

  1902. was actually

  1903. there.

  1904. Because sometimes

  1905. you might say

  1906. it's this, but

  1907. it gives them

  1908. an opportunity

  1909. to say, no,

  1910. that's not

  1911. what I said.

  1912. Because sometimes

  1913. what we hear is

  1914. not always what's

  1915. said.

  1916. And it's

  1917. important, just

  1918. as important as

  1919. what we say is

  1920. what we don't

  1921. say, you know?

  1922. Sometimes we

  1923. just don't want

  1924. to talk about

  1925. something.

  1926. Or maybe

  1927. your spouse

  1928. does, and

  1929. then you need

  1930. to establish

  1931. a time to

  1932. talk about

  1933. it.

  1934. Because it

  1935. needs to be

  1936. discussed, but

  1937. you also need

  1938. to give each

  1939. other space in

  1940. order to be

  1941. prepared to

  1942. speak about

  1943. it.

  1944. You know, to

  1945. understand.

  1946. The next thing

  1947. here is respecting

  1948. their opinion.

  1949. You know, 1 Peter

  1950. 3, 7 said

  1951. giving honor.

  1952. You know, I

  1953. want you to

  1954. understand.

  1955. one thing you

  1956. can learn,

  1957. guys, is

  1958. God does

  1959. give women

  1960. different

  1961. perception

  1962. than men.

  1963. Women, by

  1964. nature, pick

  1965. up on cues

  1966. that oftentimes,

  1967. guys, we

  1968. miss.

  1969. You need to

  1970. give credence

  1971. to your wife

  1972. when she says

  1973. something because

  1974. there's some

  1975. merit behind

  1976. it of the

  1977. little nuances.

  1978. to understand,

  1979. respect their

  1980. opinion.

  1981. You know, your

  1982. wife will pick

  1983. up things like

  1984. moods, facial

  1985. expressions, little

  1986. nuances that

  1987. you'll miss

  1988. sometimes.

  1989. You know, as

  1990. men, we're

  1991. usually pretty

  1992. direct.

  1993. It's like, okay,

  1994. they said that,

  1995. that's what they

  1996. meant, okay,

  1997. we'll move on.

  1998. Women are

  1999. always reading.

  2000. How did they

  2001. say that?

  2002. What was the

  2003. tone of voice?

  2004. How was this?

  2005. How was that?

  2006. You know, I

  2007. want you to

  2008. understand,

  2009. sometimes that's

  2010. important.

  2011. And your

  2012. wife can be a

  2013. big help to

  2014. you in that

  2015. area.

  2016. To understand

  2017. those things,

  2018. to give

  2019. respect their

  2020. opinion.

  2021. You know,

  2022. always speak in

  2023. love and with

  2024. kindness.

  2025. You know,

  2026. Colossians 4,

  2027. 6 says,

  2028. let your speech

  2029. always be

  2030. seasoned,

  2031. always with

  2032. grace,

  2033. seasoned with

  2034. salt.

  2035. You know,

  2036. we need to

  2037. avoid,

  2038. the wrong

  2039. language.

  2040. Don't be

  2041. unkind or

  2042. arrogant or

  2043. belittling.

  2044. You know,

  2045. they're opposite

  2046. of what the

  2047. Bible tells us.

  2048. Because remember,

  2049. as we look back

  2050. in our text,

  2051. it talked about

  2052. a mouth that is

  2053. sweet,

  2054. a mouth that

  2055. speaks the

  2056. right things.

  2057. We've got to be

  2058. careful to speak

  2059. the right things.

  2060. So next,

  2061. just talk,

  2062. talk just to

  2063. talk.

  2064. If you want to

  2065. promote conversation,

  2066. talk just to

  2067. talk.

  2068. You know,

  2069. we don't have

  2070. to have a

  2071. reason or

  2072. big business

  2073. that's happening.

  2074. It doesn't have

  2075. to be a

  2076. deliberate

  2077. situation that

  2078. has arisen,

  2079. but just talk

  2080. for the sake

  2081. of talking.

  2082. Maybe it's

  2083. about nothing.

  2084. Or how

  2085. about this?

  2086. It's just

  2087. for fun.

  2088. You know,

  2089. sometimes you

  2090. can just

  2091. have a fun

  2092. conversation.

  2093. You know,

  2094. talk about

  2095. dreams and

  2096. different things

  2097. that you want

  2098. to do or

  2099. different things

  2100. together,

  2101. but just talk

  2102. to talk or

  2103. positively praising.

  2104. You know,

  2105. think about

  2106. Proverbs 31,

  2107. 28.

  2108. It says,

  2109. her children

  2110. rise up and

  2111. call her blessed,

  2112. her husband also,

  2113. and he praises

  2114. her.

  2115. Guys,

  2116. your wife needs

  2117. to know that

  2118. you're proud of

  2119. her, that you

  2120. appreciate the

  2121. things that she

  2122. does, you know?

  2123. And so we see

  2124. here that

  2125. that praising

  2126. is important.

  2127. So we'll cover

  2128. these last three

  2129. things quick and

  2130. then we'll be

  2131. done because we're

  2132. already over

  2133. time.

  2134. Three benefits

  2135. of conversing.

  2136. You get a

  2137. clearer understanding

  2138. of each other.

  2139. You learn how

  2140. to meet each

  2141. other's needs.

  2142. And as our

  2143. text tells us,

  2144. they become

  2145. your best friend

  2146. because you

  2147. have that

  2148. bond together.

  2149. And so we'll

  2150. pick up here and

  2151. talk about a few

  2152. more things here

  2153. next week.

  2154. But hopefully

  2155. those things are

  2156. food for thought

  2157. to help you

  2158. and to consider

  2159. and to be

  2160. practicing and

  2161. working on as

  2162. you go through.

  2163. So, all right,

  2164. let's go ahead and

  2165. we'll be dismissed

2166. in a word of prayer.

  2167. Heavenly Father,

  2168. go ahead and

  2169. do

  2170. care,

  2171. those things

  2172. have are

  2173. going to be

  2174. cek aspirations of

  2175. time.

  2176. That's all that here.

2177. Well, let's agree with you along.
