  1. Amen. Great to have everybody looking forward to a great conference this week.

  2. Hopefully you've put that on your schedule and your calendar.

  3. And so we're looking forward to a great kickoff here this morning.

  4. As we're going to have Brother David Sorensen come and from all the way up far north up in Duluth, Minnesota.

  5. You know, they came down here to get the warm weather, right?

  6. And but I know Duluth is a beautiful place.

  7. And and the Lord sent them there many years ago and started a church there in the city of Duluth.

  8. And God is blessed. And and Brother Sorensen has also wrote many books and talked about this issue of the text and and the things of the scripture.

  9. And so we're going to have him come preach here this morning.

  10. And Sunday school hour is really going to be the kickoff for the conference.

  11. But just look forward to get your Bibles out, get ready to go here this morning as we have Brother Sorensen come and preach God's word to us here this morning.

  12. Well, I'm delighted to be with you here at Plains Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.

  13. The pastor said we're from Duluth, Minnesota.

  14. My sweet Pam, my wife Pam is here.

  15. I've been married 54 years and I'll say more about that in a moment.

  16. But Duluth is not the end of the world.

  17. But you can see it from there.

  18. Up on Lake Superior, not Canada.

  19. But the pastor said there 35, almost 36 years ago to start an independent Baptist church there in Duluth.

  20. And I stepped out of the pastorate about eight years ago and have been traveling the country ever since from Florida to Alaska, from San Diego to...

  21. And so we've seen much of the country.

  22. But delighted to be here today.

  23. As the pastor mentioned, we do have a book table back there.

  24. And I'd like to just talk about a few of the things here this morning.

  25. In each service, we'll mention a few of the books.

  26. On the back of the table there is an independent Baptist commentary.

  27. It's what this church believes.

  28. Most Bible commentaries are written by Presbyterians or Lutherans or Reformed.

  29. Very few have been written by independent Baptists.

  30. But there is an independent Baptist commentary back there.

  31. It's written on a level that will help the pastor.

  32. It's written on a level that will help the people in the pew.

  33. And we have people all over America by them.

  34. And I'd encourage you to look it over.

  35. It's a commentary that teaches a six-day literal creation,

  36. baptism by immersion, pre-tribulation rapture,

  37. the local church, and it's what we believe.

  38. But anyway, they're on sale back there, ladies.

  39. By the way, ladies, everything on the table is on sale.

  40. And that's the truth.

  41. I mean, if you go online or go on Amazon or whatever,

  42. you'll find the prices are considerably higher.

  43. And if you buy something back there today,

  44. you don't have to pay the freight, the shipping,

  45. which sometimes is substantial for the commentary.

  46. But anyway, that's available in hardbound.

  47. It's also on CD-ROM.

  48. These are not cassette tapes.

  49. These are flash drives.

  50. We have a flash drive A and a flash drive C

  51. that you can use on your computer.

  52. About five, six years ago,

  53. I sat down and wrote a book entitled

  54. Winning People to Christ.

  55. I've been privileged over the years

  56. to be part of several great soul-winning churches.

  57. One was the Old Fourth Baptist Church up in Minneapolis,

  58. and the other was my father's church.

  59. He pastored there in central Illinois.

  60. And both those churches reached attendances well over 1,000.

  61. And it was based on just old-fashioned Bible evangelism

  62. and soul-winning.

  63. It's been my experience that God's people have a desire

  64. to witness and tell others about Christ,

  65. but often aren't exactly sure how to do it,

  66. how to break the ice, how to get into the gospel.

  67. Well, this book explains how to do it step by step.

  68. My wife said it's her favorite book

  69. of those which I have written.

  70. And most of what I have written over the years

  71. has been Christian-oriented, theologically oriented,

  72. and this is sort of a little bit,

  73. but a book entitled Empowered by the Devil,

  74. The Rise and Fall of Adolf Hitler.

  75. I guess if I have one hobby, it's just World War II.

  76. I love to read books on it.

  77. And several years ago, I decided to write a book about Hitler.

  78. And the thesis of the book is that he was demon-possessed.

  79. And there's historical basis for that,

  80. as well as scriptural basis.

  81. And if you have any interest in World War II

  82. and the overview of the war,

  83. you'll find it an easy read and a fascinating read.

  84. So anyway, so much for the commercial.

  85. Let's get on with the program today.

  86. But take your Bible this morning.

  87. By the way, as the pastor said, in the next hour,

  88. we're going to get into the matter of the textual issue

  89. and the Bible translation issue in earnest.

  90. And every night this week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday night,

  91. you don't want to miss any of these

  92. because they kind of build.

  93. If you hear just one message,

  94. you're not going to get the whole picture.

  95. But if you hear the whole series,

  96. you'll have a much, much broader understanding

  97. of why we use the King James Bible.

  98. And there are very principled

  99. and doctrinal reasons for that.

  100. But in this hour today,

  101. I'd like, we'll just preach from the Word this morning.

  102. Turn with me to Psalm chapter 18 and verse 30.

    Psalms 18 chapter mention

  103. Psalm chapter 18 and verse 30 this morning.

    Psalms 18 chapter mention

  104. One verse.

  105. In my opinion, Psalm 18 is one of the mountain peak chapters

  106. in the book of Psalms.

  107. Psalm 18 and verse 30.

  108. As for God, His way is perfect.

  109. The Word of the Lord is tried.

  110. He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him.

  111. Father, this morning as we look to Your Word again at this hour,

  112. I would ask that Your name be glorified,

  113. Your Word magnified, and the Savior lifted up.

  114. Father, bless Your people,

  115. and may this be an encouragement and a help to them.

  116. And I ask it in Jesus' name.

  117. Amen.

  118. Well, Psalm 18, as I mentioned,

  119. I believe is one of the mountain peak Psalms

  120. and the Word of God.

  121. It was penned by David in his latter years.

  122. And in the text before us here today,

  123. David reflects back,

  124. number one, on God's perfect way,

  125. number two, on God's proven Word,

  126. and number three, on God's protective work.

  127. And the principles that were effective 3,000 years ago

  128. are still in force to this day.

  129. And so let's look at here a little bit more closely this morning.

  130. Number one is God's perfect way.

  131. As for God, His way is perfect.

  132. Now, I believe that God's way of salvation is perfect.

  133. It's simple and it's complete.

  134. It's faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ,

  135. trusting in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  136. There's nothing complicated about it.

  137. Turning to and trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  138. Now, there are several very popular myths

  139. that proliferate across the land.

  140. They're certainly true in Duluth.

  141. I suspect they're true here in Nebraska

  142. and really all over the world.

  143. The devil is very effective in promoting his lies.

  144. But one myth that perpetuates

  145. is that baptism has something to do with getting saved.

  146. That's true up in our town.

  147. I think it's true probably for many people here in your town.

  148. There are variations of that, several flavors of that.

  149. Some think that baptism washes away original sin.

  150. Some people think that baptized

  151. enters a person into a covenant with God.

  152. Others think that we're saved by getting baptized.

  153. When we were building our church building

  154. there in Duluth, Minnesota years ago,

  155. the men of the church largely built the building.

  156. They'd come at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon

  157. or thereabouts in the summertime.

  158. And we'd worked till dark.

  159. And the neighbor from across the street

  160. walked over to see what was going on.

  161. And he said,

  162. Boy, you Baptists are a bunch of eager beavers.

  163. But, so I started to talk to him.

  164. His name was Bill.

  165. And I said,

  166. Hey, Bill, let me ask you something.

  167. If you died today,

  168. do you know for sure you'd go to heaven?

  169. He said,

  170. Oh, yes, my pastor told me I took care of that

  171. when I got baptized.

  172. How sad.

  173. How tragic.

  174. And that man has since passed on.

  175. And if all he is trusting then

  176. and now was his baptism, folks,

  177. he's not in heaven, I'll tell you that.

  178. It's a sad thing.

  179. But there are untold millions

  180. that are going to be in hell

  181. who thought they were going to heaven

  182. because they got baptized.

  183. But it's a myth.

  184. It's a fallacy of the devil.

  185. Another myth that proliferates

  186. and the devil promotes it all the time

  187. is that by being a good guy

  188. or being a good gal,

  189. being a good person,

  190. God will accept that

  191. when you get to heaven someday.

  192. Up in Minnesota,

  193. a little slogan about being Minnesota nice.

  194. I guess the idea is to be nice to your neighbor

  195. and nice to everybody else.

  196. And, in fact, there's a store

  197. in the Minneapolis International Airport.

  198. There's a mall right in the middle

  199. of the airport

  200. and one of the stores in the mall

  201. is Minnesota nice.

  202. Well, I'm not against being Minnesota nice.

  203. I think that's a good thing.

  204. The folks being Minnesota nice

  205. will never get you to heaven.

  206. Or Nebraska nice.

  207. Our church is located

  208. about three miles from the state of Wisconsin

  209. and a quantity,

  210. the folks in our church

  211. come from Wisconsin.

  212. And I'll say,

  213. look, us folks here in Minnesota

  214. are Minnesota nice.

  215. I don't know about you guys from Wisconsin.

  216. But being a nice person

  217. will never get you to heaven.

  218. Being a good guy or a good gal

  219. will never get you to heaven.

  220. Having water sprinkled on your head

  221. will never get you to heaven.

  222. Folks, I am Baptist born

  223. and Baptist bred.

  224. When I die,

  225. I'll be Baptist dead.

  226. But all the baptistry water

  227. in all the world

  228. never washed away one sin

  229. and never saved one person.

  230. But these are myths of the devil

  231. that are perpetrated,

  232. falsehoods that people foolishly believe.

  233. Salvation is simple

  234. and it's complete.

  235. It's perfect.

  236. Trusting in Jesus Christ.

  237. For God so loved the world

  238. that he gave his only begotten son

  239. that whosoever believeth in him

  240. should not perish

  241. but have everlasting life.

  242. But as many as received him,

  243. to them give you the power

  244. to become the sons of God

  245. even to them that believe on his name.

  246. For by grace are you saved through faith

  247. and that not of yourselves.

  248. It is the gift of God,

  249. not of works lest any man should boast.

  250. Praise God.

  251. It's just trusting Jesus Christ.

  252. Turning to him and trusting him.

  253. By the way,

  254. I was telling the pastor

  255. just to digress here for just a moment.

  256. I've had voice problems.

  257. In fact, the meeting I was to have

  258. with you last year

  259. was because I couldn't talk.

  260. That's kind of tough for a preacher.

  261. And I've been to

  262. four ear, nose, throat specialists.

  263. One speech specialist.

  264. One oncologist.

  265. And they couldn't figure out

  266. what was my voice problems.

  267. Well, some of them

  268. we were getting kind of close.

  269. But I'll tell you,

  270. I stumbled onto something

  271. that helps me, folks.

  272. It's medicine.

  273. It's powerful medicine.

  274. I hold it here in my hand

  275. right here today.

  276. And I kid you not,

  277. this is not a joke.

  278. This stuff helps.

  279. And A&W root beer.

  280. I'm not a big fan of A&W.

  281. I don't drink a lot of it.

  282. But you'll see me now

  283. during these services

  284. take a sip of A&W root beer.

  285. And my voice is starting

  286. to crack a little bit already.

  287. It'll loosen me up.

  288. But, so anyway,

  289. get that out of my system.

  290. But God's way of salvation

  291. is perfect.

  292. Praise the Lord for that.

  293. But not only that,

  294. I believe God's way of living

  295. is perfect.

  296. In Titus chapter 2

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  297. and verse 11,

  298. we read,

  299. For the grace of God

  300. that bringeth salvation

  301. teaches us

  302. that denying ungodly lusts

  303. we should live soberly,

  304. righteously,

  305. and godly

  306. in this present world.

  307. That pretty well sums up

  308. the Christian life.

  309. To live soberly,

  310. righteously,

  311. and godly

  312. in this present world.

  313. I'm going to take a sip

  314. of my medicine here.

  315. To lead a godly life.

  316. To lead a righteous life.

  317. To lead a sober,

  318. separated life.

  319. That we should live

  320. soberly,

  321. righteously,

  322. and godly.

  323. Churches today,

  324. Christians today,

  325. are afflicted

  326. with the foolishness

  327. of alcohol.

  328. Oh,

  329. it used to be

  330. preachers preached again.

  331. A hundred years ago,

  332. Billy Sunday

  333. was going up

  334. and down the land

  335. preaching about

  336. the demon in the bottle

  337. of alcohol.

  338. And churches

  339. for a long time

  340. kind of condoned it.

  341. There are churches today,

  342. I'm talking about

  343. evangelical,

  344. and the particularly

  345. reformed churches

  346. in America today,

  347. they're not going to

  348. condone alcohol,

  349. they promote it.

  350. And I could tell you

  351. stories which I won't

  352. get into here today.

  353. That we should live

  354. soberly.

  355. I started my college

  356. career years ago

  357. in a secular university

  358. in central Illinois,

  359. Bradley University,

  360. and I was majoring

  361. in electrical engineering.

  362. That's a long story

  363. how I got from there

  364. to where I'm at today.

  365. But,

  366. sat in a chemistry class,

  367. and there was a professor

  368. from India

  369. by Dr. Singh,

  370. S-I-N-G-H.

  371. And in the course

  372. of that year

  373. of chemistry,

  374. we got into

  375. organic chemistry,

  376. and that leads

  377. to chemically

  378. the type of alcohols,

  379. and there are several

  380. different types

  381. of alcohol

  382. chemically.

  383. and one is

  384. methyl alcohol

  385. and another is

  386. ethyl alcohol.

  387. Methyl alcohol

  388. is what we used

  389. to call wood alcohol.

  390. You buy it in the grocery,

  391. or not the grocery store,

  392. the hardware store

  393. for industrial

  394. cleaning purposes.

  395. But,

  396. methyl alcohol,

  397. you drink that,

  398. the professor said,

  399. you'll be either

  400. dead in the morning

  401. or blind by morning.

  402. Terrible poison.

  403. Ethyl alcohol

  404. is what's found

  405. in beverage alcohol.

  406. Hand goes up

  407. in the back of the room,

  408. a secular university.

  409. Dr. Singh,

  410. why is methyl alcohol

  411. a deadly poison

  412. and ethyl alcohol

  413. is not?

  414. I'll never forget

  415. what he said.

  416. He said,

  417. students,

  418. they are both poison.

  419. One just works

  420. faster than the other.

  421. To live soberly,

  422. righteously,

  423. and godly

  424. in this present world.

  425. And as David

  426. looked back

  427. over 70 years

  428. of his life,

  429. he reflected

  430. that God's

  431. way

  432. is perfect.

  433. But not only that,

  434. God's will

  435. is perfect.

  436. As for God,

  437. his way is perfect.

  438. His way of salvation

  439. is perfect.

  440. His way of

  441. Christian living

  442. is perfect.

  443. His will

  444. for our lives

  445. is perfect.

  446. God's will.

  447. And what's the next

  448. two words?

  449. Perfect will

  450. of God.

  451. The perfect will

  452. of God.

  453. His way

  454. is perfect

  455. for our lives.

  456. Young people

  457. here today,

  458. never be afraid

  459. of God's will.

  460. I've been around

  461. the ministry

  462. my entire life.

  463. My dad was a pastor

  464. for 50 years

  465. and I've been

  466. in the ministry

  467. now for over 50 years.

  468. But I've watched

  469. Christian young people

  470. over the years

  471. and I think

  472. I may have been

  473. in this once

  474. upon a time,

  475. but afraid

  476. of God's will.

  477. And the devil

  478. comes and says,

  479. why,

  480. if you surrender

  481. to God's will,

  482. God may send you

  483. to be a missionary

  484. to outer Mongolia

  485. or Uzbekistan.

  486. Well, maybe,

  487. but probably not.

  488. But whatever

  489. God's will is,

  490. it's perfect.

  491. God doesn't call

  492. everyone to the ministry.

  493. But whatever God

  494. has for you,

  495. it's perfect.

  496. I grew up

  497. as a preacher's kid.

  498. In fact,

  499. my grandfather

  500. was a preacher.

  501. I guess that makes me

  502. not only a PK,

  503. but a grand PK.

  504. And sadly,

  505. when I was a senior

  506. in high school

  507. and an upperclassman

  508. in high school,

  509. the last thing

  510. I wanted to do

  511. was go into the ministry.

  512. I was a rebellious teenager.

  513. In fact,

  514. I wasn't even saved

  515. at that point in life.

  516. And in high school,

  517. they required us,

  518. went to a large

  519. public high school

  520. there in central Illinois.

  521. And they required us

  522. to take a class

  523. called vocations.

  524. Boy, that sounds

  525. like an exciting class.

  526. And it was to try

  527. and expose us

  528. to career paths

  529. and professions

  530. and job opportunities

  531. and so forth.

  532. And we took a test

  533. one day,

  534. a proficiency test,

  535. to try and figure out

  536. what kind of job

  537. or profession

  538. or work

  539. we might be interested in.

  540. Well, folks,

  541. on my test

  542. or on my list,

  543. I mean,

  544. it was below zero

  545. going into the ministry.

  546. Last thing

  547. I ever wanted to do.

  548. You say,

  549. well, wow,

  550. you've been in the ministry

  551. now for over 50 years.

  552. Man, it must be really tough

  553. doing something

  554. you didn't want to do.

  555. Wrong.

  556. Because you see,

  557. folks,

  558. when I got saved

  559. and God showed me

  560. his perfect will,

  561. I've never been happier.

  562. Now, I'm not saying

  563. that God's going to put you

  564. in the ministry.

  565. That's not the point.

  566. The point is,

  567. whatever God's will

  568. is for your life,

  569. it'll be good

  570. and acceptable

  571. and perfect.

  572. God's will

  573. is perfect.

  574. And so,

  575. number one this morning

  576. is God's

  577. perfect way.

  578. Number two this morning

  579. is God's proven word.

  580. Notice again in the text,

  581. as for God,

  582. his way is perfect.

  583. The word of the Lord

  584. is tried.

  585. The word of the Lord

  586. is tried.

  587. That means it's been tested.

  588. It's been proven

  589. over the years.

  590. It's been attacked

  591. endlessly.

  592. But the Bible

  593. just stands.

  594. Old Swedish

  595. immigrant to America

  596. over 100 years ago

  597. penned the song

  598. The Bible Stands,

  599. by the way,

  600. Heldor Lillin,

  601. this was his name,

  602. The Bible Stands

  603. Like a Rock Undaunted

  604. Through the Raging

  605. Storms of Time.

  606. Its pages burn

  607. with a truth eternal

  608. and they glow

  609. with a light sublime.

  610. Folks,

  611. the Bible stands

  612. to this day.

  613. It's been attacked

  614. endlessly.

  615. The Romans burned it.

  616. The Popes banned it.

  617. William Tyndale

  618. committed the crime

  619. of putting the Bible

  620. into print

  621. in the English language

  622. and he was burned

  623. at the stake

  624. for the crime

  625. of printing the Bible

  626. in English.

  627. There's a book back there,

  628. I'll tell you about it

  629. later on.

  630. A picture of William Tyndale

  631. being burned at the stake.

  632. The devil has attacked

  633. the word of God

  634. across the ages.

  635. The communists

  636. outlawed it.

  637. Back in the era

  638. of the Soviet Union,

  639. there was

  640. what they called

  641. the underground church.

  642. Of course,

  643. the Soviet Union

  644. was a completely

  645. communistic state,

  646. an atheistic state.

  647. Christianity

  648. was outlawed.

  649. The Bible

  650. was outlawed.

  651. Outlawed.

  652. And of course,

  653. producing the Bible

  654. was above all things

  655. outlawed

  656. in the Soviet Union.

  657. Nevertheless,

  658. in the underground church,

  659. there would be folks

  660. sitting way up

  661. in an attic

  662. or in a basement

  663. and pecking away

  664. on a typewriter.

  665. You couldn't say,

  666. what's a typewriter?

  667. But pecking away

  668. on a typewriter

  669. to make

  670. mimeograph stencils,

  671. to run off pages

  672. of the Bible.

  673. Now,

  674. you old-timers

  675. here know

  676. about mimeograph machines.

  677. Fifty years ago,

  678. probably even

  679. not that long ago,

  680. but fifty years ago,

  681. all church literature

  682. was done

  683. on mimeograph machines.

  684. And you'd put

  685. this filmy stencil

  686. in a typewriter

  687. and you'd type

  688. whatever you wanted

  689. to type.

  690. We used to employ

  691. a church secretary

  692. which you'd spend

  693. all day Thursday morning

  694. typing up

  695. the church bulletin.

  696. And it was

  697. tedious work.

  698. It was crude printing

  699. in the mimeograph machine.

  700. There was paste ink.

  701. It was literally

  702. like axle grease.

  703. And you put

  704. this coarse paper

  705. in the machine

  706. and you turn the crank.

  707. Ka-chunk,

  708. ka-chunk,

  709. ka-chunk.

  710. And if you really

  711. had a high-tech church,

  712. you had an electric machine

  713. and it goes

  714. ka-chunk,

  715. ka-chunk,

  716. ka-chunk.

  717. But here were brethren

  718. sitting up in an attic

  719. or in a basement,

  720. whatever,

  721. typing away

  722. on an ancient

  723. old typewriter

  724. to mimeograph off

  725. several pages

  726. of the Word of God.

  727. And in due season,

  728. the KGB caught up

  729. with them

  730. and they were sent

  731. to gulags

  732. in Siberia

  733. for the rest

  734. of their life

  735. for the crime

  736. of printing the Bible

  737. a page or two

  738. in the Soviet Union.

  739. And yet the Bible

  740. stands.

  741. It just continues.

  742. Down through the ages.

  743. It just continues.

  744. The liberals

  745. have questioned

  746. and denied it.

  747. The Supreme Court

  748. kicked it out

  749. of the public schools.

  750. I am old enough

  751. to remember

  752. when that happened,

  753. by the way.

  754. Charles Darwin

  755. denied it.

  756. The French philosopher

  757. Voltaire

  758. said that the day

  759. was coming

  760. when the only place

  761. you'll find a Bible

  762. is in a museum.

  763. Well, today,

  764. Voltaire's house

  765. is in the Bible Society

  766. and the Prince

  767. of Bibles there.

  768. The Bible stands.

  769. Lenin laughed at it.

  770. But they're all gone.

  771. The Bible stands.

  772. I'm going to say

  773. that means tested.

  774. Tested.

  775. And found true.

  776. Every archaeological find

  777. in the Middle East

  778. has verified

  779. the history

  780. and the details

  781. of the Bible.

  782. The Dead Sea Scrolls

  783. have verified

  784. the Old Testament text.

  785. And incidentally,

  786. there are more copies

  787. of the Bible.

  788. I'll take that

  789. a step further.

  790. There are more copies

  791. of the King James Bible

  792. that have been printed

  793. than any other book

  794. in history.

  795. In fact,

  796. there are more copies

  797. of the King James Bible

  798. that have been printed

  799. over the last 400

  800. and some years

  801. than all the other

  802. Bible translations

  803. put together.

  804. We'll get into that

  805. particularly on Wednesday night.

  806. God's hand of blessing

  807. on the King James Bible.

  808. In Psalm 12, 6,

  809. we read,

  810. the words of the Lord

  811. are pure words

  812. as silver tried

  813. in a furnace of earth

  814. seven times.

  815. Now,

  816. I am told

  817. that the ancients

  818. would,

  819. in smelting silver,

  820. would take the silver ore,

  821. put it into a crucible,

  822. apply intense heat

  823. underneath it,

  824. which would melt the ore

  825. into a liquid state,

  826. and then the refiner

  827. would take a tool

  828. and draw off the slag,

  829. the impurities.

  830. And then it would be

  831. allowed to cool down

  832. to a solid state.

  833. And then it would be

  834. reheated once again

  835. to a molten state,

  836. to a liquid state,

  837. and more impurities

  838. would float to the surface.

  839. And the refiner

  840. would draw them off,

  841. draw the slag off,

  842. allow it to cool down again,

  843. and it'd go through

  844. that process seven times.

  845. And after seven times,

  846. it was considered

  847. pure silver

  848. or pure gold.

  849. And you read in the Bible

  850. about fine silver

  851. or fine gold.

  852. It means refined,

  853. highly refined.

  854. It was a symbol

  855. of purity.

  856. And the words of the Lord

  857. are pure words,

  858. as silver tried

  859. in a furnace of earth,

  860. purified seven times.

  861. God's word is truth

  862. to this day.

  863. And it changes lives

  864. to this day.

  865. Let me tell you

  866. a little story.

  867. Ten years ago,

  868. or thereabout,

  869. a young woman

  870. wandered into

  871. the evening service

  872. there at North Star

  873. Baptist Church in Duluth.

  874. My wife was in the nursery

  875. that night.

  876. And she had two little kids

  877. tagging along with her

  878. that she was going

  879. to put in the nursery.

  880. And she was rough.

  881. She had tattoos.

  882. And my wife said to her,

  883. what brought you here

  884. to North Star Baptist Church?

  885. She said,

  886. I'm just looking for a church

  887. that would accept me.

  888. Well, this young lady,

  889. her name was Samantha,

  890. had grown up

  891. in a Christian home,

  892. but utterly

  893. and went off

  894. about as deep into sin

  895. as a young woman can go.

  896. Her boyfriend

  897. was in prison.

  898. He was,

  899. his name was Tyrone.

  900. He was the number two

  901. gang leader

  902. in the street gangs

  903. of the city of Minneapolis

  904. and St. Paul.

  905. A bad dude.

  906. And he went to prison,

  907. so she went to Chicago

  908. and was walking

  909. the streets of Chicago.

  910. Wandered into a homeless mission,

  911. fell on her knees,

  912. and cried out to God

  913. to save her.

  914. And when Samantha got saved,

  915. folks,

  916. she got saved.

  917. She went back to Minnesota.

  918. Her boyfriend in prison

  919. had telephone privileges.

  920. She got on the telephone

  921. and led Tyrone to Christ.

  922. And then for the next ensuing,

  923. however many days,

  924. months,

  925. I don't know the exact time,

  926. they did Bible study together

  927. by telephone

  928. every day.

  929. And Tyrone got out of prison

  930. one day

  931. and she had moved to Duluth

  932. to get out of the gang world

  933. in the Twin Cities

  934. and brought him to church

  935. that Wednesday night.

  936. That first Wednesday

  937. he was out of prison.

  938. He walked in

  939. and he later looked around

  940. and said to me,

  941. what am I doing

  942. in this church

  943. of all these white people?

  944. He's a black man.

  945. She's an American Indian,

  946. by the way.

  947. But I want to tell you

  948. something, folks.

  949. And by the way,

  950. they got married in prison

  951. of all places.

  952. But I want to tell you something.

  953. When Tyrone and Samantha Walker

  954. got saved,

  955. they got saved.

  956. And today,

  957. he's a preacher of the gospel.

  958. A powerful preacher

  959. of the gospel.

  960. He's starting a church

  961. as I speak

  962. in Trenton, New Jersey

  963. out on the East Coast today.

  964. And he's a good preacher.

  965. He's probably one

  966. of the most aggressive

  967. soul winners I've ever met.

  968. The word of God

  969. changes lives.

  970. The gospel

  971. is the power of God

  972. unto salvation.

  973. The word of the Lord

  974. is tried.

  975. The word of the Lord

  976. is proven.

  977. It changes lives.

  978. And I could tell you

  979. numerous stories

  980. along those lines.

  981. I'll tell you one more

  982. in just a second here.

  983. Here.

  984. Back last spring,

  985. the Walkers just went

  986. to New Jersey

  987. in the 1st of July.

  988. And they already,

  989. I think they had 37

  990. people in church

  991. here this week

  992. in their new church

  993. that started.

  994. But before they left Duluth,

  995. back in April,

  996. Tyrone was witnessing

  997. to people

  998. and he came across

  999. a fellow

1000. who was an American Indian

  1001. of the Ojibwe tribe

  1002. there in northeastern Minnesota.

  1003. The guy's name

  1004. is Vince Merrill.

1005. And I know this story

  1006. because he got up

  1007. later in church

  1008. and gave his testimony.

  1009. He said,

  1010. I was a confirmed Satanist.

  1011. He has,

  1012. to this day,

  1013. 666 tattooed

  1014. on his face.

  1015. But Tyrone led Vince

  1016. to Christ.

  1017. And today,

  1018. he never misses

  1019. a service.

  1020. I mean,

  1021. Sunday morning,

  1022. Sunday night,

  1023. Wednesday night,

  1024. he's there

  1025. every time the door

  1026. is open,

1027. wearing a suit and tie.

  1028. American Indian,

  1029. Satanist,

  1030. the folks,

  1031. when he got saved,

  1032. he got saved

  1033. by the power

1034. of the Word of God.

1035. The Word of the Lord

  1036. is tried.

1037. It remains to this day.

  1038. Hitler's Mein Kampf

  1039. has come and gone.

  1040. Marx das Kapital

  1041. has come and gone.

  1042. Mao's little red book

  1043. has come and gone.

  1044. Back in 1964,

  1045. Chairman Mao Tse-Tung

  1046. of the Communist

  1047. Chinese Party

1048. printed up a little book

  1049. called The Sayings

  1050. of Chairman Mao.

  1051. It wasn't a big book,

1052. just a little red book.

1053. It had a red cover on it.

  1054. The Chinese communists

  1055. printed one billion copies.

  1056. And they proclaimed

1057. it was the most published

  1058. book in history,

  1059. which is not true

1060. because the King James Bible is.

1061. But the point I'm making

1062. is how many here today

  1063. have ever heard

1064. of Mao's little red book?

  1065. One, two, all right?

  1066. Maybe three.

  1067. Not many people

1068. have even heard of it.

  1069. A billion copies

  1070. were printed.

  1071. And that was only

  1072. 60 years ago.

  1073. But folks,

  1074. the Word of God

1075. just remains to this day.

  1076. It just continues.

  1077. It's tried.

  1078. It's proven.

1079. And in the English language,

  1080. the English manifestation

1081. of the Word of God

1082. of the King James Bible.

1083. We're going to be getting

1084. into this in the next

  1085. several sessions,

  1086. and so make sure

  1087. you don't miss that.

  1088. But the Bible

  1089. is absolute truth.

  1090. Jesus said,

  1091. Thy Word is truth.

  1092. Folks,

1093. you hold in your hand

  1094. absolute truth.

1095. You're not going to get truth

  1096. on the evening news

  1097. tomorrow night,

  1098. I'll tell you that.

1099. You're not going to find

1100. much truth out on the internet.

  1101. But folks,

  1102. in your hand today

  1103. is God's Word.

  1104. It's true.

  1105. It's absolute truth.

  1106. Thy Word is truth.

  1107. And so,

  1108. number one this morning,

  1109. God's perfect way.

  1110. Number two this morning,

  1111. God's proven Word.

1112. But number three this morning,

  1113. God's protective work.

1114. Notice in the text here again,

1115. let's read the verse again.

  1116. Psalm 1830.

  1117. As for God,

  1118. His way is perfect.

1119. The Word of the Lord

  1120. is tried.

  1121. He is a buckler

  1122. to all those

  1123. that trust in Him.

  1124. You say,

  1125. Preacher,

  1126. what in the world

  1127. is a buckler?

  1128. Well,

  1129. I will confess,

  1130. it's older technology.

  1131. In fact,

  1132. it's really old technology.

  1133. But frankly,

1134. it was just a type of shield.

  1135. A buckler

1136. was a smaller type of shield

  1137. that literally buckled

  1138. on the forearm.

  1139. It was round.

  1140. Sometimes they called it

  1141. a target.

  1142. And wherever the forearm

  1143. of the soldier went,

  1144. that shield went.

1145. And so a soldier in battle

1146. might out of the corner

  1147. of his eye,

  1148. seeing an arrow incoming

  1149. up with his arm,

1150. and the shield deflected it.

1151. Or might see the enemy

  1152. bringing the blow

  1153. of his sword down

  1154. up with his arm,

1155. and the shield protected him.

  1156. But notice it says,

  1157. He is a buckler.

  1158. He is a shield

  1159. to all those

  1160. that trust in Him.

  1161. You recall that God

  1162. said to Abraham

1163. back there in Genesis 15,

  1164. I am thy shield

  1165. and thy exceeding

  1166. great reward.

  1167. Folks,

  1168. He's our shield

  1169. to this day.

  1170. Particularly

1171. as we are in the center

  1172. of His will.

  1173. You recall there

  1174. in Ephesians 6

  1175. and verse 16

  1176. where the apostle said,

  1177. take the shield

  1178. of faith.

  1179. Well,

  1180. faith is trust.

  1181. Trust is faith.

  1182. He is a buckler

  1183. to all those

  1184. that trust in Him.

  1185. Now that begins

  1186. first with our salvation.

1187. When we turn to Christ

  1188. and trust in Him,

  1189. He becomes

  1190. our salvation.

  1191. Protecting us

  1192. from the judgment

  1193. of God

1194. and the wrath of God.

  1195. But folks,

  1196. as we begin

  1197. to go down

  1198. the pathway

  1199. of the Christian life,

  1200. there are problems,

  1201. as you know.

  1202. Somebody penned

  1203. the song years ago,

1204. It's not an easy road.

  1205. We're traveling to heaven.

  1206. That's true.

1207. And if you've been saved

1208. for any length of time,

1209. you know there are troubles.

  1210. And the devil

  1211. will see to that

1212. and sin sees to that.

1213. But we can trust Him

  1214. for His protective work,

  1215. for His protective care.

  1216. Trust Him for guidance.

  1217. Making decisions in life.

  1218. Go to Him

  1219. and seek His face.

  1220. In all thy ways,

  1221. acknowledge Him

1222. and He shall direct thy paths.

  1223. The idea there

  1224. in acknowledges

  1225. seeking His face,

  1226. look to Him.

  1227. In all thy ways,

  1228. acknowledge Him

1229. and He shall direct thy paths.

  1230. Trust Him for strength.

1231. The Lord is the strength

  1232. of my life.

1233. They that wait upon the Lord

  1234. shall renew their strength.

  1235. Trust Him for crises

  1236. that come in life.

  1237. And crises do come.

1238. It may be medical crises.

1239. It may be financial crises.

1240. It may be family problems,

  1241. employment troubles.

1242. There are problems in life.

  1243. But folks,

1244. we can go to Him

  1245. and seek His help

  1246. for His protective care

1247. all through the Christian life.

  1248. Four and a half,

  1249. I guess,

  1250. it's getting closer

1251. to five years ago now.

1252. I went to the doctor.

  1253. He had a lump

  1254. on my neck.

  1255. And he says,

  1256. I'm sending you

  1257. to an oncologist.

1258. I went to the oncologist

1259. and they ran a series of tests

  1260. and PET scans

  1261. and he said,

  1262. you have cancer.

  1263. In fact,

  1264. after the PET scan,

  1265. he said,

1266. you have stage four cancer.

  1267. And my wife saw

  1268. the scans.

  1269. We saw them.

  1270. I mean,

1271. I was full of cancer.

  1272. And without going

1273. into a long story here today,

1274. I believe in James chapter five,

  1275. verses 14, 15, and 16.

  1276. Is any sick,

  1277. let them call

1278. for the elders of the church

1279. and let them anoint them

  1280. with oil.

1281. And the prayer of faith

  1282. shall save the sick.

1283. And I asked the pastor

  1284. and the deacons

  1285. of the church

1286. to pray over me publicly

  1287. and ask God's healing.

  1288. I went back

  1289. to the oncologist here

  1290. a couple weeks later

1291. and they did another PET scan

  1292. and the doctor said,

  1293. it's gone.

  1294. I said,

  1295. well,

  1296. I know what happened,

  1297. doc.

  1298. I said,

1299. the church has prayed for me

1300. according to James chapter five.

  1301. He said,

  1302. whatever you're doing,

  1303. keep on doing it.

  1304. Now,

  1305. I understand

1306. that it may not be

  1307. God's will to heal

  1308. every single person

  1309. who has cancer.

  1310. I understand that.

1311. And I know some very wonderful

  1312. godly people

  1313. have died of cancer.

1314. But my point simply is

1315. that we can go to him

  1316. for help in trouble

1317. and seek his protective care

1318. when the crises of life come.

  1319. In

  1320. Psalm chapter 91

    Psalms 91 chapter mention

  1321. and verse one,

  1322. there we read,

  1323. he that dwelleth

  1324. in the secret place

  1325. of the Most High

  1326. shall abide

  1327. under the shadow

  1328. of the Almighty.

  1329. I have a whole sermon

  1330. on those several verses.

1331. But the essence of it is

  1332. that when we are

1333. in the center of God's will,

  1334. we're under the shadow

  1335. of his protective care.

  1336. The story there

  1337. is of the tabernacle

1338. and the Holy of Holies

1339. and the pillar of smoke

  1340. came up by day,

  1341. it cast a shadow.

  1342. And the only time

1343. you were near that shadow

  1344. is when you were

  1345. near the tabernacle.

1346. near the presence of God.

1347. And the point simply is

1348. that the closer we are

  1349. to God

  1350. and our lives

  1351. and our walk

  1352. and his will, folks,

1353. he is there to protect us.

  1354. In

  1355. Psalm 84 and verse 13,

  1356. O Lord of hosts,

1357. blessed is the man that,

  1358. what's the next word?

  1359. Trusteth

  1360. in thee.

  1361. God protects

  1362. and blesses

  1363. those who trust him.

  1364. Psalm 91, 11,

  1365. For he shall give

  1366. his angels charge

  1367. over thee

  1368. to keep thee

  1369. in all thy ways,

  1370. lest thou cast

1371. thy foot against a stone.

1372. We have a guardian angel.

  1373. And I'm looking forward

  1374. someday to meeting

  1375. my guardian angel

1376. when I get to heaven.

  1377. I think I've given him

1378. a run for the money

  1379. over the years.

  1380. But

  1381. God takes care

  1382. of his people.

  1383. He is a buckler,

  1384. a shield

  1385. to all those

  1386. that trust

  1387. in him.

  1388. And so here today,

  1389. David looked back

  1390. over his life,

  1391. 70 years.

  1392. His life was long

  1393. and rich

  1394. with battles

  1395. and victories,

  1396. with adventures

  1397. and

  1398. conquests.

  1399. But he came

  1400. to the conclusion

  1401. that

  1402. God's

  1403. way is perfect,

  1404. God's word

  1405. is proven,

  1406. and God

  1407. takes care

  1408. that is

  1409. protects his people.

  1410. And folks,

  1411. that was true

  1412. 3,000 years ago.

  1413. It's still true today.

  1414. God's way

  1415. is perfect.

  1416. His way of salvation

  1417. is perfect.

  1418. His way of living

  1419. is perfect.

  1420. His will is perfect.

  1421. And his word

  1422. has been proven,

  1423. it's been tried

  1424. and tested

  1425. down through

  1426. the course of time

  1427. and it still stands.

  1428. And he protects

  1429. his people.

  1430. Well,

  1431. praise God

  1432. for that.

  1433. His way

  1434. is perfect.

  1435. Let's stand,

  1436. please.

  1437. Our heads are bowed,

  1438. our eyes are closed,

1439. no one is looking about.

  1440. Now,

  1441. I'm a guest preacher

  1442. here today.

  1443. I've only met

  1444. a few of you.

  1445. Maybe you're

  1446. a visitor

  1447. here today.

  1448. Maybe you're

  1449. listening online

  1450. today.

  1451. and you're

  1452. not sure

  1453. where you stand

  1454. before God.

  1455. I was a preacher's

  1456. kid.

  1457. I went to church

  1458. for 20 years

  1459. of my life

  1460. in a fundamental

  1461. Baptist church

  1462. and I wasn't saved.

  1463. And that's a long

  1464. story I won't get

  1465. into here.

  1466. But one day

  1467. I turned to Christ

  1468. and trusted him

  1469. and made sure

  1470. of it.

  1471. And maybe you're

  1472. here today,

  1473. you're not sure

  1474. if you're saved.

  1475. You're not sure

  1476. if you're on your

  1477. way to heaven.

  1478. You can pray

  1479. right now

  1480. something like

  1481. this,

  1482. silently,

  1483. but sincerely

  1484. pray something

  1485. like this.

  1486. Dear Lord Jesus,

  1487. I know

  1488. that I'm a

  1489. sinner.

  1490. Please

  1491. save me.

  1492. Now,

  1493. the Bible

  1494. says,

  1495. for whosoever

  1496. shall call upon

  1497. the name of

  1498. the Lord

  1499. shall be saved.

  1500. the Bible

  1501. says,

  1502. him that

  1503. cometh to me

  1504. I will in

  1505. no wise

  1506. cast out.

  1507. Just repeating

  1508. words after the

  1509. preacher doesn't

  1510. mean anything.

  1511. But folks,

  1512. if it comes

  1513. from your

  1514. heart and

  1515. you sincerely

  1516. cry out to

  1517. God,

  1518. the Bible

  1519. says thou

  1520. shall be

  1521. saved.

  1522. And so let

  1523. me repeat

  1524. that little

  1525. prayer one

  1526. more time.

  1527. If that's

  1528. what's in

  1529. your heart,

  1530. you pray it

  1531. sincerely,

  1532. though silently

  1533. in this

  1534. room.

  1535. Dear Lord

  1536. Jesus,

  1537. I know

  1538. that I'm

  1539. a sinner.

  1540. please save

  1541. me.

  1542. I now

  1543. trust you.

  1544. With heads

  1545. bowed,

  1546. eyes closed,

  1547. no one

  1548. looking about,

  1549. is there

  1550. someone in

  1551. this room

  1552. who just a

  1553. moment ago

  1554. to the best

  1555. of your

  1556. ability,

  1557. silently,

  1558. but very

  1559. sincerely

  1560. prayed and

  1561. asked Christ

  1562. to save

  1563. you?

  1564. Would you

  1565. slip your

  1566. hand up high

  1567. enough that

  1568. I can see

  1569. it?

  1570. I will not

  1571. point you

  1572. out.

  1573. I will not

  1574. embarrass you.

  1575. I'll pray

  1576. for you.

  1577. But then

  1578. Christian here

  1579. today,

  1580. are you

  1581. living God's

  1582. perfect way

  1583. of living

  1584. soberly,

  1585. righteously,

  1586. and godly

  1587. in this

  1588. present world?

  1589. Are you

  1590. in his

  1591. word on

  1592. a regular

  1593. basis?

  1594. Are you

  1595. trusting him

  1596. for his

  1597. help?
