  1. As we continue looking in our series here talking about transitions and as the children of Israel

  2. transitioned from a united kingdom to a divided kingdom as God had put forth because of

  3. the sin of Solomon and we're going to see here as this kingdom had stood for a 120 years under

  4. Saul and David and Solomon and we see that was divided in the days of Rehoboam and Jeroboam

  5. and as we saw those things come to play just as God had prescribed to that and the kingdom

  6. separated you know it was not just a political fracture you might say but it was also a religious

  7. and spiritual fracture that happened within the kingdom and we're going to see that as we're

  8. going to look tonight and from chapter 12 we saw that Jeroboam had established a religion

  9. of his own.

  10. We saw that Jeroboam had set up an altar, he had set up his own priesthood, he had set up

  11. all those things that pertain to his religion.

  12. Remember he had the two golden calves that he made and he established those and he put

  13. one at Dan and the other one at Bethel and he established his time frame and the feast

  14. that he was going to promote and those things and remember he also replaced the Levites as

  15. priests and put in those that he wanted.

  16. And instead of what God prescribed he did what he wanted to do.

  17. And so we saw Jeroboam doing these things and we're going to pick up tonight and see God's

  18. response to Jeroboam and what took place in that because if you remember God told Jeroboam

  19. what?

  20. He said, Jeroboam if you will follow me I will establish you a kingdom like unto David.

  21. And we talked about that.

  22. That was a pretty powerful promise that God made to Jeroboam.

  23. He said, Jeroboam hey if you do follow me and keep my commandments I will establish you

  24. a kingdom as sure as David's kingdom.

  25. And we understand that the kingdom of David is still being fulfilled today as we're going

  26. to see here and understand.

  27. But we saw that the Levites were replaced.

  28. And this caused something in the land of Israel because we saw, you know we talk a lot about

  29. migration today and people moving.

  30. Well it caused a mass migration in Israel when all this took place.

  31. Because we saw there earlier and you can look over into the book of 2 Chronicles, keep your

  32. finger there in 1 Kings.

  33. But 2 Chronicles we're going to look over here for a moment because we need to understand

  34. and get back here a little bit in our thoughts on this.

  35. But we see in 2 Chronicles chapter 11 in verse 13 it says,

    2 Chronicles 11 chapter mention

  36. And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their

  37. coasts.

  38. And for the Levites left their suburbs and their possessions and came to Judah and Jerusalem.

  39. For Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office under the

  40. Lord.

  41. In other words, Jeroboam did what?

  42. He shut down the worship to the Lord.

  43. He shut down those things of worshiping the Lord.

  44. In verse 15 it says,

  45. And he ordained him priests for the high praises and for the devils and for the calves which

  46. he made.

  47. And so we know that he had in chapter 12 there of 1 Kings that he had established himself

  48. as even the priest of his new kingdom, of the new things he wanted.

  49. And so as we find here, we're going to pick up tonight in 1 Kings chapter 13 in verse

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  50. 1 here tonight.

  51. And we see here it says this,

  52. And behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel.

  53. And Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense and he cried against the altar the word of the

  54. Lord and said,

  55. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  56. Heavenly Father, as we look here tonight, Lord, as we take a few moments to look into

  57. your word, Lord, as we see the importance of this picture that we're going to see here

  58. in this chapter here tonight, Lord, of even the application for us today, not only of just

  59. practical daily things, Lord, but also just a warning even to us also to understand the

  60. importance of having these things in perspective.

  61. And so, Lord, as we look at these things tonight, pray just challenge and courage and strengthen

  62. as we're here in your word here this evening, Lord.

  63. And we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name.

  64. Amen.

  65. So we see here something very important here because 1 Kings chapter 13 brings out a very

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  66. new individual on the scene.

  67. And he's referred to as just the man of God.

  68. The man of God from Judah comes to Shiloh where Jeroboam is worshiping his new calf that

  69. he had built and with his new priests and he's there performing those things.

  70. And so the man of God that brought the message reveals something important here.

  71. And he reveals to us to stand in obedience.

  72. You know, we need to understand that we need to stand in obedience to the Lord.

  73. Because I want you to understand this would not have been an easy thing for him to do when

  74. the Lord came to him and said, hey, I want you to go up to Shiloh.

  75. And this Jeroboam, the king, just made a new religion that cast me out.

  76. And I want you to go to confront him.

  77. Now, when you think about that for a moment, that doesn't sound too enticing, does it?

  78. You know, to have the Lord tell you, hey, this is what I want you to do.

  79. I want you to go upset the king that's already struggling in establishing his kingdom.

  80. I'll know about you, but that's not the one that you volunteer for.

  81. But we find that the Bible tells us that God came to this individual.

  82. We don't know who he is.

  83. The Bible doesn't reveal his name.

  84. We know nothing about him as an individual except for his description.

  85. He was a man of God.

  86. When it comes to Scripture, that's probably about the best phrase you can have for you.

  87. You know?

  88. That when God writes about you, he says, here's a man of God that's willing to go up and be obedient

  89. unto what I've said.

  90. And so we're going to see here this stand of obedience here first because Jeroboam, remember,

  91. he had chose to turn away from the promise that God had made him.

  92. Instead of trusting in God, he trusted in who?

  93. He trusted in himself.

  94. He trusted in his advisors.

  95. He tried to do things his own way because, remember, why did he set up a new religion?

  96. Because he didn't want the people going back to Jerusalem.

  97. He didn't want them to go where they would continue to worship God the way that God had

  98. instructed.

  99. Instead, he forgot that God told him it'll be okay.

  100. You know, we get in trouble oftentimes because what God tells us to do doesn't match up with

  101. what our mind or the world tells you that looks good.

  102. Because logically speaking, to send your people to another nation to worship is probably not

  103. a good move.

  104. But God said it was going to be okay if he trusted him.

  105. But Jeroboam instead turned his back on God, which brings this clear and quick rebuke from

  106. the man of God that comes.

  107. He came from Judah, which reveals that he stood for the Lord.

  108. How do we know this man also definitely stood for the Lord?

  109. Because he wasn't in Israel because those that trusted the Lord, those that wanted to serve

  110. the Lord migrated where?

  111. Second Chronicles tells us what happened, doesn't it?

  112. It says all the priests and the Levites and others that wanted to serve the Lord moved to

  113. Judah, moved around Jerusalem.

  114. And it made an impact even within their society.

  115. Notice here in verse 1, it says,

  116. Behold, there came a man of God out of Judah, notice that next phrase, by the word of the

  117. Lord.

  118. He arrives at Bethel to deliver a message to Jeroboam about Jeroboam and the altar that he

  119. had made.

  120. And he cries not against Jeroboam, which is interesting here because he doesn't directly

  121. confront Jeroboam, he cries under the altar that's being sacrificed on.

  122. And we're going to see here that God uses this as an illustration and uses this to make

  123. his point because in doing so, we're also going to see very clearly that Jeroboam understood

  124. what was happening.

  125. By Jeroboam's response, he understood exactly what was taking place.

  126. He understood what was happening because we're going to see here.

  127. Notice in verse 2 again where he says,

  128. O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord, behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David,

  129. Josiah by name, and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burnt incense

  130. upon thee.

  131. Now you think about, here's a man of God, he's going to go and he's going to declare unto Jeroboam

  132. and he's bringing a message and it's so clear and it's so concise because I want you to understand

  133. he says that there's going to be this one born in the lineage of David by the name of Josiah.

  134. Now if you're a history buff, this is interesting because it's 300 plus years before Josiah shows up.

  135. God names him by name that Josiah, the king of Judah, will come and break down and destroy

  136. this altar and even burn the priest's bones upon it to do away with it.

  137. And we find here that he's very clear with that.

  138. And let's go over and just take a quick look.

  139. Look over in 2 Kings for a moment because 2 Kings chapter 23 is where this takes place

    2 Kings 23 chapter mention

  140. and is recorded for us over here in 2 Kings chapter 23 and down in verse 15.

    2 Kings 23 chapter mention

  141. And we see this and the Bible tells us this, it says,

  142. Moreover the altar that was at Bethel and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat

  143. who made Israel to sin hath made both the altar and the high place he break down,

  144. burned the high place and stamped it small to powder and burned the grove.

  145. And Josiah turned himself and as Josiah turned himself he spied the sepulcher

  146. where there was a mount and sent and took the bones out of the sepulchers

  147. and burned them upon the altar and polluted it according to the word of the Lord

  148. which the man of God proclaimed who proclaimed these words.

  149. So in other words it was fulfilled exactly as the man of God described it was going to take place.

  150. It was laid out in detail for them.

  151. And we see also though that there was also an immediate sign that was going to be given.

  152. Because, you know, as people what do we do?

  153. When somebody comes and, if somebody would come and make a statement like that

  154. what would be your response?

  155. I mean you would look at them like, okay, you know,

  156. how does this impact me right now?

  157. You know?

  158. And oftentimes that's the way we think.

  159. But God wanted to get his attention because here we find,

  160. as you read on down through here,

  161. in verse 3 it says,

  162. He gave a sign the same day saying,

  163. This is a sign which the Lord has spoken.

  164. Behold, the altar shall be rent and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

  165. In other words he says,

  166. Just so you know I'm serious,

  167. the altar is going to break apart here in a few minutes

  168. and all the ashes in the altar are going to fall out.

  169. Now because you've got to stop and consider,

  170. what were altars made of?

  171. Stones.

  172. So the idea of it just suddenly falling apart

  173. and all the ashes falling out of it

  174. was kind of another one of those things.

  175. Like, okay, really?

  176. I mean you could look at Jeroboam

  177. was probably looking at the man of God saying,

  178. Hey, you're done dude.

  179. This is just foolishness.

  180. Because notice Jeroboam's response to this.

  181. Because in verse 4 it says,

  182. And it came to pass when King Jeroboam

  183. heard the saying of the man of God

  184. which cried against the altar at Bethlehem

  185. and he put forth his hand from the altar

  186. saying, Lay hold of him.

  187. Now I want you to see what happened here

  188. because when he points to the man of God

  189. the Bible tells us that his hand dried up

  190. and he couldn't draw it back.

  191. Do you think God has attention about now?

  192. I think it's pretty clear he had his attention.

  193. So the altar, but I want you to see here,

  194. verse 5, it says,

  195. And so we see here that God is making it very clear

  196. of what's happening.

  197. When Jeroboam points to say,

  198. Arrest him,

  199. his hand dries up and he can't draw it back.

  200. Well, when we read through here,

  201. you'll find that it changed Jeroboam's attitude

  202. a little bit.

  203. I don't know about you,

  204. but that would probably get your attention

  205. and my attention too.

  206. And he cries out to the man of God

  207. and says,

  208. Plead with your God to heal me.

  209. Now I think this is important

  210. when the man of God is being obedient

  211. to the things of God.

  212. I think there's some things we can learn here

  213. because we're going to see here

  214. the man of God's reply to him.

  215. Look at verse 6,

  216. And the king answered and said unto the man of God,

  217. Entreat now the face of the Lord thy God.

  218. Now that's important too

  219. because Jeroboam didn't say,

  220. My God.

  221. He said, Thy God.

  222. God had sent a prophet to him earlier

  223. directly telling him what was going to happen

  224. if he made a choice to follow God.

  225. And we can see here that Jeroboam made a choice.

  226. His choice was to reject God.

  227. But he still understood that God

  228. had some power behind what he was saying.

  229. Notice here.

  230. And it says,

  231. And pray for me that my hand may be restored me again.

  232. Now I want you to see here

  233. as an obedient believer,

  234. as an obedient person of the Lord,

  235. there's always something we're going to see here

  236. attached to obedience.

  237. Because sometimes we can be brutal in obedience.

  238. We can be so thus saith the Lord

  239. we miss the other side of the equation.

  240. Because I want you to see something here

  241. very important is the man of God

  242. didn't mock Jeroboam.

  243. He didn't tell him he deserved what he got.

  244. He had mercy

  245. upon him.

  246. The Bible tells us that he humbly pleaded with God

  247. to heal Jeroboam.

  248. He had mercy

  249. that was there.

  250. When we realize

  251. that the spirit of the man of God

  252. and the spirit of God's people today,

  253. we need to understand

  254. that while he came with authority from the God

  255. to proclaim judgment upon the altar

  256. of rebellion,

  257. he also came humbly and compassionately

  258. towards them also.

  259. In other words,

  260. the man of God's heart

  261. wasn't hard towards Jeroboam,

  262. even though he had a hard message.

  263. He had compassion upon him.

  264. Because when you consider,

  265. the man of God

  266. could have very easily

  267. turned around and walked away.

  268. But I think it's important

  269. to see that God is always merciful.

  270. God holds us to account,

  271. but God is also merciful.

  272. And he wants his people to have mercy.

  273. And mercy upon him.

  274. And we see here this,

  275. he came humbly and compassionately.

  276. And when Jeroboam desired mercy and healing,

  277. the prophet mercifully besought the Lord.

  278. The Bible says that he prayed.

  279. You know, remember back over in James chapter 5,

    James 5 chapter mention

  280. remember what James 5, 16 tells us?

  281. It tells us this.

  282. It says,

  283. Confess your faults one to another

  284. and pray for one another

  285. that you may be healed.

  286. And the effectual fervent prayer

  287. of a righteous man availeth much.

  288. That verse plays out here very clearly.

  289. The righteous fervent prayer

  290. and availeth much before God.

  291. This man of God, when he prayed,

  292. we're going to see here

  293. that God healed Jeroboam.

  294. So this is quite a lot of stuff going on here.

  295. As God is dealing with Jeroboam

  296. and he's understanding the dynamic here

  297. of what's happening.

  298. You know, look over in the scripture.

  299. Turn to Proverbs chapter 16 for a moment.

    Proverbs 16 chapter mention

  300. Because we need to always remember

  301. that God tells us that we have authority and truth,

  302. but we also have to always make sure

  303. that we understand that God is also merciful,

  304. that God is gracious.

  305. And how this balances.

  306. Look here in Proverbs 16, verse 5.

    Proverbs 16:5

  307. It says,

  308. You notice that mercy and truth are put together.

  309. In the New Testament,

  310. you find that to speak the truth in love.

  311. You know?

  312. When you preach and teach the truth of God's word,

  313. it makes people uncomfortable sometimes.

  314. When you preach about sin,

  315. that people, their sin has separated them from God,

  316. it's going to create a conflict.

  317. That's truth.

  318. But we also need mercy.

  319. The right spirit and the right attitude

  320. behind it.

  321. It makes an amazing difference.

  322. You know?

  323. Think about 2 John chapter 1.

    2 John 1 chapter mention

  324. When the apostle John is writing here,

  325. he says,

  326. Grace be with you.

  327. Mercy and peace from God the Father

  328. and from the Lord Jesus Christ,

  329. the Son of the Father.

  330. And notice the last part of that verse

  331. in chapter 1, verse 3.

  332. It says,

  333. In truth and love.

  334. The reality of love.

  335. Love is not overlooking.

  336. Love always needs to be attached to truth.

  337. And truth needs to be attached to love.

  338. Because God wants us to know the truth

  339. because He loves us.

  340. When we understand that picture

  341. to speak the truth in love

  342. as Ephesians 4 tells us,

  343. we find here that this individual,

  344. this man of God,

  345. when he prayed,

  346. Jeroboam,

  347. his prayer was answered,

  348. his hand was restored.

  349. And, you know,

  350. when you think about it,

  351. it must have been something to see

  352. that day at the altar.

  353. When he comes in and screams,

  354. oh, altar, altar,

  355. and gives all this,

  356. that declaration,

  357. Jeroboam points at him,

  358. his hand dries up,

  359. and then he pleads with him

  360. to pray for him,

  361. and his hand's healed.

  362. The altar has split open,

  363. all the ashes have fallen out.

  364. Because this is where this chapter

  365. records some things

  366. that are interesting,

  367. and it sums up at the end.

  368. But I want you to understand

  369. that if you're going to be

  370. a man of God,

  371. if you're going to be

  372. a person of God,

  373. the one thing we can take

  374. from this tonight

  375. is to understand

  376. that we need to stand

  377. in obedience

  378. to the Word of God.

  379. The man was willing to go

  380. and to do what God

  381. had told him to do,

  382. but also to stand on truth.

  383. Notice here with me,

  384. verse 7,

  385. And the king said unto

  386. the man of God,

  387. Come home with me,

  388. and refresh thyself,

  389. and I will give thee a reward.

  390. And the man of God

  391. said unto the king,

  392. If thou wilt give me

  393. half thine house,

  394. I will not go in with thee,

  395. neither will I eat bread,

  396. nor drink water in this place.

  397. For so I was charged me

  398. by the word of the Lord,

  399. saying, Eat no bread,

  400. or drink water,

  401. nor turn again

  402. by the same way

  403. that thou camest.

  404. So he went another way,

  405. and returned not by the way

  406. that he came to Bethel.

  407. This man of God

  408. was willing to stand

  409. on the truth of God.

  410. In other words,

  411. he said,

  412. Yes, I know that God healed you,

  413. and I don't think

  414. there was anything wrong

  415. in Jeroboam saying,

  416. Hey, I want to thank you

  417. for doing something good for me.

  418. But I want you to see

  419. the picture of the man of God

  420. had already been told what?

  421. Very direct information,

  422. hadn't he?

  423. He said,

  424. You're not to eat

  425. when you go up there,

  426. you're not to drink,

  427. and you're not to go

  428. the same way.

  429. In other words,

  430. basically,

  431. I don't want you

  432. to have any social contact

  433. that you're going

  434. back and forth here.

  435. You need to be separate

  436. from what's happening.

  437. And the man of God,

  438. I want you to see here,

  439. probably was looking

  440. wore out,

  441. because by the time

  442. you walk up someplace

  443. and you haven't eaten

  444. and you haven't drank

  445. any water,

  446. it starts to show,

  447. and I think Jeroboam

  448. was just trying to be

  449. repaying kind,

  450. you know.

  451. But I want you to understand,

  452. as we're going to look here,

  453. it's more important

  454. to stand on the truth

  455. than it is

  456. for our own luxury.

  457. Because sometimes

  458. we have a tendency

  459. of saying,

  460. well,

  461. that sounds pretty good.

  462. We'll bend the rules

  463. a little bit.

  464. Instead of standing

  465. on truth,

  466. the offer to refresh

  467. at the king's home

  468. and receive a reward

  469. definitely would have been

  470. a temptation.

  471. You know,

  472. the prophet replied,

  473. though,

  474. his reply was

  475. one of principle

  476. declaring that

  477. he must stand

  478. on the truth

  479. of the word

  480. of the Lord,

  481. because the Lord

  482. had commanded him

  483. to travel directly

  484. to Shiloh

  485. and return to Judah

  486. another way,

  487. neither eating

  488. or drinking

  489. along the way.

  490. You know,

  491. I want you to understand,

  492. to stand in truth

  493. is a choice

  494. that you make.

  495. Look over in the Old Testament,

  496. go to Psalm 119

  497. for a moment.

  498. Psalm 119

  499. in verse 30,

  500. because you see here

  501. in Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:30

  502. verse 30,

  503. it says,

  504. I have chosen

  505. the way of truth.

  506. Thy judgments

  507. have I laid

  508. before me.

  509. You know,

  510. I have chosen

  511. the way of truth.

  512. To stand in truth

  513. is a choice

  514. that we make.

  515. It's a conscious choice.

  516. It doesn't happen

  517. by accident.

  518. You know,

  519. when you understand

  520. that to walk

  521. in the right way

  522. was important.

  523. And why was this important?

  524. I think God's laying

  525. another principle

  526. out for us.

  527. Look over

  528. in the New Testament

  529. for a moment.

  530. Go to Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  531. chapter 5.

  532. Because I want you

  533. to understand,

  534. Jeroboam had rejected

  535. the things of God.

  536. God had offered him

  537. many blessings,

  538. you might say.

  539. And Jeroboam said,

  540. I don't care.

  541. Notice here

  542. in Ephesians 5,

  543. look down at verse 11.

  544. It says this,

  545. have no fellowship

  546. with the unfruitful

  547. works of darkness,

  548. rather reprove them.

  549. God was setting

  550. a standard here.

  551. He says,

  552. man of God,

  553. you don't go

  554. hanging out

  555. with people

  556. who are totally

  557. against the things,

  558. especially ones

  559. that know

  560. who I am

  561. and what I've

  562. promised to them.

  563. The unfruitful

  564. works of darkness,

  565. the man of God,

  566. was not tainted

  567. by the false worship

  568. that was happening

  569. in Shiloh.

  570. You know,

  571. the priests

  572. and the Levites

  573. and others

  574. that trusted the Lord

  575. had already

  576. removed themselves

  577. from Israel.

  578. Now this is important

  579. as we're going to look

  580. a little later

  581. in this chapter

  582. because the next

  583. individuals that we find

  584. are going to cause

  585. a little bit

  586. of question here

  587. of why are they there?

  588. Because you know what?

  589. Believers can

  590. compromise ourselves.

  591. It doesn't make you

  592. unsaved,

  593. but you can compromise

  594. your testimony,

  595. you can compromise

  596. truth,

  597. you can compromise

  598. all sorts of things

  599. and look over

  600. the news.

  601. Go to 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  602. chapter 6

  603. for a moment.

  604. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  605. chapter 6

  606. and we see here

  607. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  608. chapter 6

  609. in verse 16

  610. because notice

  611. what Paul's telling

  612. those at the church

  613. at Corinth.

  614. He tells them this,

  615. he says,

  616. in what agreement

  617. hath the temple

  618. of God with idols?

  619. Think about this

  620. man of God

  621. standing before

  622. Jeroboam's golden calf.

  623. Jeroboam wanted

  624. to be identified

  625. with the golden calf

  626. and the man of God

  627. said,

  628. God told me

  629. I should not be

  630. associated with your idol.

  631. He was going to be

  632. very careful

  633. about disassociating

  634. with that idol.

  635. Notice what he says,

  636. for you are the temple

  637. of the living God

  638. for as God has said,

  639. I will dwell in them

  640. and walk in them

  641. and I will be their God

  642. and they shall be my people.

  643. Look at verse 17,

  644. wherefore come out

  645. from among them

  646. and be ye separate

  647. saith the Lord

  648. and touch not

  649. the unclean thing

  650. and I will receive you.

  651. Now I want you

  652. to understand

  653. the principle here

  654. was what the priests

  655. and the Levites

  656. had already done.

  657. Those that wanted

  658. to follow the Lord,

  659. what did they say?

  660. We're not going

  661. to worship your idol.

  662. You're not going

  663. to tell us

  664. we can't worship God.

  665. We're going to go

  666. separate from you

  667. to the place

  668. that we can worship God.

  669. A conscious choice

  670. that was made

  671. and this principle

  672. still applies today

  673. as we must be principled

  674. in our walk

  675. and stand in truth,

  676. relying on the Lord

  677. to guide

  678. and to direct us

  679. along the way.

  680. Because remember,

  681. God had given him

  682. very great directions,

  683. didn't he?

  684. He said,

  685. this is what you're going

  686. to do.

  687. This is what you're going

  688. to say.

  689. This is how you're going

  690. to do it.

  691. He had all the details

  692. laid out for him.

  693. You know,

  694. God does that for us

  695. if we allow it.

  696. Look over to the book

  697. of Proverbs for a moment,

  698. Proverbs chapter 3.

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  699. You know,

  700. a very familiar verse,

  701. but I want you to see

  702. this verse in application.

  703. Because so far,

  704. this man of God

  705. is doing a pretty good job.

  706. You know,

  707. he's standing in obedience,

  708. he's standing on truth.

  709. Proverbs 3 verse 5 says what?

    Proverbs 3:5

  710. Trust in the Lord

  711. with what?

  712. All thine heart

  713. and lean not unto thine

  714. own understanding.

  715. That's a key part

  716. of that verse

  717. oftentimes we brush over.

  718. Lean not unto what?

  719. Thine own understanding.

  720. What gets us in trouble

  721. when we start replacing

  722. God's wisdom

  723. with our wisdom

  724. and how we understand

  725. things to be

  726. instead of what God

  727. has said.

  728. And look at verse 6.

  729. In all thy ways

  730. acknowledge him

  731. and he'll do what?

  732. Direct thy paths.

  733. In other words,

  734. God had a path

  735. for this man of God

  736. to safely get

  737. up to Shiloh

  738. to do what he was told

  739. to do in truth,

  740. to be obedient,

  741. to do what he was supposed

  742. to do,

  743. and to get back home

  744. and be untainted

  745. by all that was going on.

  746. That was God's plan.

  747. But I want you to understand

  748. the man of God

  749. forgot a very important thing,

  750. that third thing

  751. we're going to look at tonight,

  752. because he needed

  753. to stand in faith.

  754. because you can know

  755. the truth,

  756. but faith is taking

  757. truth and putting it

  758. into action,

  759. is acting upon it.

  760. That's the difference

  761. because James tells us,

  762. he that knoweth

  763. to do good

  764. and doeth it not

  765. to him it is sin.

  766. You know,

  767. that's an interesting statement

  768. when you stay that verse out.

  769. In other words,

  770. it's not a verse

  771. of ignorance,

  772. it's a verse

  773. of willing choice.

  774. Because he didn't say

  775. in James,

  776. you know,

  777. well,

  778. if you didn't know

  779. it was good

  780. but you should have done it,

  781. it's sin,

  782. it said,

  783. no,

  784. if you know

  785. you should do

  786. and you choose not to,

  787. now it's a problem.

  788. It became a problem

  789. because you already knew

  790. what you were supposed to do.

  791. You weren't operating

  792. in ignorance.

  793. You're operating

  794. in a matter of lack

  795. of faith,

  796. of saying,

  797. I know what God

  798. has for me to do

  799. and I choose not to do it.

  800. But to stand in faith

  801. is important.

  802. Because notice here,

  803. the man of God

  804. had begun his journey

  805. back towards Judah,

  806. stops to rest

  807. under an oak tree,

  808. and, you know,

  809. God didn't tell him

  810. he couldn't stop

  811. and take a break

  812. and I think, you know,

  813. I don't think there was

  814. anything wrong necessarily

  815. with what he was doing.

  816. You know,

  817. he was probably tired

  818. and traveling, you know,

  819. to stop and take a little break

  820. under the tree

  821. and enjoy the shade

  822. for a moment.

  823. But I want you to see

  824. what takes place.

  825. In the rest of this chapter,

  826. it's apparent

  827. that we must hold fast

  828. to the Word of God

  829. and trust God

  830. that standing in faith,

  831. faith in the Word of God,

  832. in other words,

  833. will be deceived.

  834. We have to say,

  835. God has said it,

  836. therefore I need

  837. to take action upon it.

  838. This is a key

  839. that we see here

  840. in this chapter

  841. to stand by faith.

  842. Now notice here with me,

  843. look at verse 11

  844. because this is

  845. one of these narratives

  846. in Scriptures

  847. that sometimes

  848. you look at and say,

  849. well, that's kind of

  850. an odd direction

  851. that God recorded.

  852. I mean,

  853. you think about this

  854. for a moment.

  855. The man of God

  856. comes from Judah.

  857. He comes up,

  858. he confronts Jeroboam,

  859. the altar split open,

  860. his hand is dried up

  861. and then it's made whole

  862. and the guy takes off

  863. and starts heading home.

  864. Then we have this narrative

  865. of three other individuals

  866. that get involved,

  867. kind of out of no place,

  868. you might say,

  869. that weren't even necessarily

  870. relative to the account

  871. but it does come in

  872. because what takes place

  873. becomes common knowledge

  874. even to Jeroboam.

  875. And I want you to see

  876. what takes place here

  877. in the rest of this chapter.

  878. Now notice in verse 11,

  879. Now there dwelt

  880. an old prophet in Bethel

  881. and his sons came

  882. and told him

  883. all the words

  884. the man of God

  885. had done

  886. the day in Bethel

  887. and the words

  888. which he had spoken

  889. unto the king

  890. and they told also

  891. to their father.

  892. And their father

  893. said unto them,

  894. What way went he

  895. for his sons

  896. had seen

  897. that way

  898. the man of God

  899. went

  900. which came

  901. from Judah.

  902. Now,

  903. so we see here

  904. in Shiloh,

  905. this is another

  906. one of those

  907. things that when you

  908. start thinking about it

  909. gets pretty interesting.

  910. What is the old prophet

  911. doing still hanging out there

  912. when all the other

  913. godly people did what?

  914. They'd already taken off.

  915. Then you have

  916. a second question,

  917. What's the old prophet's

  918. son doing

  919. hanging out

  920. at the idol sacrifice?

  921. How did they have

  922. first-hand information?

  923. Well, they had to be where?

  924. Present.

  925. Compromise.

  926. This is a little

  927. side note for you.

  928. Your compromise

  929. will be doubled down

  930. by your kids.

  931. His sons

  932. come and tell him.

  933. Others had separated

  934. but this man

  935. had kept his family there.

  936. He compromised

  937. with what was happening

  938. in Israel.

  939. You know,

  940. maybe he's like

  941. many others

  942. that remain

  943. where truth

  944. is compromised

  945. refusing to separate

  946. themselves

  947. to be identified

  948. with God's people.

  949. You know,

  950. things like this

  951. still happen today.

  952. It's amazing

  953. when you talk to people.

  954. People will know

  955. the truth

  956. but choose

  957. even to go to churches

  958. that are counter to truth.

  959. That's compromise.

  960. Because something about it

  961. they just, you know,

  962. that makes them

  963. not, you know,

  964. makes them feel uncomfortable.

  965. But as his sons come

  966. and report about the prophecy

  967. and the healing of Jeroboam,

  968. the old prophet

  969. asks about the direction

  970. the man of God

  971. had taken

  972. and starts out after him.

  973. And we find here,

  974. look down at verse 13.

  975. It says,

  976. And he said to his son,

  977. Saddle me the ass

  978. and he saddled him the ass

  979. and he rode thereon

  980. and went after the man of God

  981. and found him sitting under an oak.

  982. And he said unto him,

  983. Art thou the man of God

  984. that camest from Judah?

  985. And he said,

  986. I am.

  987. And then he said unto him,

  988. Come home with me

  989. and eat bread.

  990. Now,

  991. I want you to see something here

  992. because the man of God

  993. gave the right reply.

  994. In other words,

  995. he knew the right information.

  996. He tells him,

  997. No, I can't

  998. because God has told me this.

  999. The word of the Lord

  1000. has spoken.

  1001. Now, this is important

1002. because I want you to see

  1003. what takes place here.

  1004. The response was

1005. the word of the Lord

1006. that was given unto the man of God.

1007. He had a clear instruction

  1008. from the Lord.

1009. Yet I'm going to see,

1010. I want you to see here

1011. because of a lack of faith

1012. in what God had said,

  1013. he was deceived

1014. and it caused a problem.

  1015. What he did,

  1016. you might say,

1017. caused a real scene in Israel.

1018. As we're going to look

  1019. at the scene

1020. that took place a little later,

  1021. word would get around

  1022. even today.

1023. I guarantee if you had

  1024. this same scene happen

1025. at the end of this chapter,

1026. it would make the news.

  1027. Social media

  1028. would have more clips

  1029. about this

  1030. than you could

1031. even grab a hold of.

  1032. I mean,

1033. the word would spread quickly

  1034. of what takes place

  1035. from this point.

  1036. The man of God,

1037. even though he was hungry

  1038. he was tired,

  1039. he desired water,

  1040. he might even

  1041. desired fellowship

  1042. because remember

1043. it was an old prophet.

  1044. We don't know.

1045. These two may have been

  1046. at least familiar

  1047. with one another.

  1048. I'm not saying

  1049. they were necessarily

  1050. good friends,

1051. but if you're a man of God,

  1052. it's interesting

  1053. as you travel

  1054. you meet a lot

  1055. of different people

1056. that profess to be Christians

  1057. and serve God.

  1058. You're familiar with them,

1059. but you may not really know them.

  1060. You don't know them

  1061. in detail.

1062. I want you to see

1063. that was this man's end,

1064. but I want you to remember

  1065. above all else

  1066. we need to trust

  1067. the word of God

  1068. because physically

  1069. we will make choices

  1070. that are contrary

1071. to the word of God

1072. if we're not going to stand

  1073. on faith

1074. of what God has said.

  1075. Turn over to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1076. chapter 8 for a moment.

  1077. Deuteronomy chapter 8,

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1078. we look down here

  1079. in verse 3

  1080. because here

  1081. Deuteronomy 8, 3

  1082. it says,

  1083. and he humbled thee

1084. and suffered thee to hunger

1085. and fed thee with manna

  1086. which thou knewest not

1087. neither did thy fathers know

1088. that he might make thee know

1089. what did he want them to know?

1090. That man doth not live

  1091. by bread alone

  1092. but by every word

  1093. that proceedeth out

1094. the mouth of the Lord

  1095. doth man live.

  1096. Now,

  1097. your Bible trivia question

  1098. for the night.

  1099. Where is this quoted

  1100. in the New Testament?

  1101. When Jesus was tempted

  1102. of the devil,

  1103. Jesus in Matthew 4, 4

  1104. quotes

  1105. Deuteronomy 8, 3.

1106. Jesus is tired and hungry.

  1107. He'd been fasting for 40 days

  1108. and the devil said,

1109. hey, turn these stones into bread

1110. and we could get into that

  1111. because would Jesus

  1112. have a problem

  1113. turning stones into bread?

  1114. No.

  1115. Wouldn't have been

1116. anything outside of his scope

  1117. of capability

1118. but that wasn't the issue.

1119. The issue is the fact that

  1120. physically

  1121. needs to take secondary

  1122. to spiritual.

1123. This life is going to pass away.

1124. We need to look at the big picture.

  1125. The old prophet,

1126. notice what the old prophet does

  1127. because this is interesting

  1128. because this individual

1129. can be related with many others

  1130. within the scripture.

  1131. Look at verse 18,

1132. and he said unto him,

1133. I'm a prophet also as thou art.

1134. Now, I want you to notice

  1135. this next phrase.

1136. And an angel spake unto me

1137. by the word of the Lord.

1138. It's amazing how many people

1139. get caught up in religions

  1140. where somebody says

1141. an angel spoke unto me.

1142. And what the angel said

  1143. was contrary

1144. to the things God said.

  1145. Islam is built on

  1146. what an angel said.

  1147. Mormonism is built

1148. on what an angel said.

  1149. Seventh-day Adventist

1150. is built on what an angel said.

1151. The list could go on.

  1152. In other words,

1153. what I want you to see,

  1154. what's happening here

  1155. is important for us

  1156. to recognize today also.

  1157. That it doesn't matter

  1158. what somebody says

  1159. an angel said

1160. or what kind of dream

  1161. or vision they had.

1162. It matters what did God say.

1163. What did God have to say

  1164. about it?

1165. Look over in the New Testament

  1166. for a moment.

  1167. Turn to 2 Corinthians chapter 11

    2 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  1168. for a moment.

  1169. 2 Corinthians chapter 11.

    2 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  1170. And I need somebody

  1171. to read that.

1172. And then I've got another one here.

  1173. Galatians 1.8.

1174. Get a couple of people

1175. to help me out here.

1176. Ethan, you got the first one there?

  1177. Yeah, 2 Corinthians 11

    2 Corinthians 11:12–14

  1178. verses 12 through 14,

  1179. if you would.

  1180. And Galatians 1.8.

1181. Who's got that one quick?

1182. Matt, you got that one back there?

  1183. All right.

  1184. Go ahead, Ethan.

  1185. Yeah.

  1186. In other words,

  1187. the devil's a master of deceit.

  1188. What's Galatians 1.8 tell us?

  1189. Yeah.

1190. I want you to understand

  1191. that this was not a one-off.

1192. The devil uses the same thing.

1193. But notice what takes place here.

  1194. This prophet,

  1195. he tells him,

  1196. he says,

1197. the angel spake unto me

  1198. and he said,

1199. to bring you back with thee

  1200. unto thine house

1201. that he may eat bread

  1202. and drink water.

1203. Now notice that last phrase

  1204. of verse 18,

1205. but he lied unto him.

1206. So the man of God

  1207. goes back with him

  1208. to eat bread.

1209. Now we're running out of time

  1210. so I'll shorten

1211. and condense this for you.

  1212. They're sitting there

  1213. at the table.

  1214. They're eating

  1215. and the old prophet

  1216. gets a real word

  1217. from the Lord.

1218. Now I want you to understand,

1219. I believe when it says

  1220. an old prophet,

  1221. this is a man

1222. who did know the Lord

1223. and who the Lord was.

1224. You can equate him also

  1225. into the Old Testament

1226. to a man by the name of Balaam.

  1227. God spoke to Balaam

  1228. even though Balaam

  1229. wasn't doing

1230. what he was supposed to do.

  1231. I don't know

  1232. what the connection is,

  1233. but it seems like

  1234. whenever this happens

  1235. there's always a donkey around.

  1236. But we find here

  1237. that the word comes,

1238. the Lord actually comes to him

1239. and notice what he says

  1240. in verse 21.

  1241. He says,

1242. For as much as thou hast

  1243. disobeyed the mouth

  1244. of the Lord

  1245. and hast not kept

  1246. the commandment

1247. which the Lord thy God

  1248. commanded thee,

  1249. thou but camest back

  1250. and hast eaten bread

  1251. and drunk water

  1252. in this place

  1253. of which the Lord

  1254. did say to thee,

  1255. Eat no bread,

  1256. drink no water,

1257. thy carcass shall not come

  1258. into the sepulcher

  1259. of thy fathers.

  1260. I bet you that

  1261. made the dinner nice.

  1262. Imagine having dinner

  1263. with somebody

  1264. and they stand up

  1265. and say,

  1266. Hey,

  1267. you disobeyed God

1268. so you're going to die.

  1269. That's a dinner conversation.

1270. The old prophet declares it.

  1271. The man of God

  1272. gets up

1273. and begins to return back.

  1274. Takes a donkey

  1275. from the old prophet

  1276. and sends him back

  1277. towards Judah.

  1278. Along the way,

  1279. something interesting happens.

1280. It says a lion met them.

  1281. The lion kills

  1282. the man of God.

  1283. And this is where

  1284. I said the spectacle

  1285. was something

1286. that would make the news.

  1287. The news

  1288. and the spectacle

  1289. is this.

  1290. The picture

  1291. in the scripture

  1292. is this.

  1293. You have the donkey

  1294. standing here.

1295. You have the dead man

  1296. of God

  1297. and the lion

  1298. sitting next to him.

  1299. Now,

  1300. I don't know about you

  1301. but that would probably

  1302. make the news.

  1303. And it did

  1304. in their day

  1305. because the Bible

  1306. says as you read

  1307. through this

1308. that people that saw it

  1309. went by

  1310. and went back

  1311. into Shiloh

  1312. and said,

  1313. did you see

  1314. what we saw

  1315. alongside the road?

  1316. There's a dead guy

  1317. laying there

  1318. with a donkey

  1319. and a lion

  1320. standing next to it.

  1321. Sounds like the beginning

1322. of a really bad joke,

  1323. doesn't it?

  1324. Sadly,

  1325. it was no joke.

  1326. What a sight

  1327. it must have been.

  1328. So the old prophet,

  1329. word gets back

  1330. to him

  1331. and he gets back

  1332. on his donkey

  1333. and he goes out

  1334. and he gathers up

  1335. the man of God,

  1336. puts him on

  1337. the other donkey

  1338. which is interesting

  1339. because the lion

  1340. just sitting there.

  1341. He takes him back

  1342. and puts him

  1343. in his own grave,

  1344. his own sepulcher

1345. and he puts him there

1346. and he tells his son,

  1347. he says,

  1348. when I die,

1349. bury me next to him.

  1350. When I die,

1351. bury me next to him

  1352. as the old

  1353. end of it,

  1354. as the old prophet

  1355. brings him back

  1356. and he places

  1357. a grave marker.

  1358. Turn back over

  1359. to 2 Kings

  1360. for a moment.

  1361. Let's go,

  1362. 2 Kings chapter 23,

    2 Kings 23 chapter mention

  1363. let's read the rest

  1364. of what Josiah

  1365. came across

  1366. because there was

  1367. a placard

  1368. on this gravestone

  1369. for over 300 years.

1370. Notice what it tells us

  1371. here in verse 17,

  1372. he said,

  1373. what title is that

  1374. that I see?

  1375. And the men

  1376. of the city

  1377. told him

  1378. it was a sepulcher

1379. of the man of God

  1380. which came from Judah

  1381. and proclaimed

  1382. these things

  1383. that thou hast done

  1384. against the altar

  1385. of Bethel.

  1386. And he said,

  1387. let him alone,

  1388. let no man

  1389. move his bones

1390. so they let his bones

  1391. alone with the bones

  1392. of the prophet

  1393. that came out

  1394. of Samaria.

  1395. In other words,

  1396. they had a headstone

  1397. there that said,

1398. hey, this is who it is.

  1399. Everybody else,

1400. when you read that account,

  1401. that was buried there,

1402. their bones were dug up

  1403. because they were prophets

  1404. of the false idol

  1405. and their bodies

  1406. were burned,

  1407. their bones were burned

  1408. upon the altar

  1409. to desecrate it.

  1410. That's what Josiah did.

  1411. Now, that's another one

  1412. of the things

  1413. we don't have time

  1414. tonight to get into

  1415. all that,

  1416. but that's ancient customs

  1417. of things

1418. that we need to understand

  1419. the picture,

  1420. big picture though.

  1421. What got the man

  1422. of God in trouble?

  1423. He was obedient,

  1424. he understood,

  1425. he stood on truth,

  1426. but he forgot what?

1427. He needed to stand in faith.

  1428. He needed to trust

1429. what he knew to be true.

  1430. Not because he thought

  1431. it was true,

1432. but because God said it

1433. and got him in trouble.

1434. Now, let's go to the end

1435. of the chapter here quick.

1436. Look down at verse 33

  1437. because the first part

  1438. of verse 33

  1439. is another one

  1440. of those interesting phrases.

  1441. After this thing,

1442. well, what was the thing

  1443. it's talking about?

1444. The whole issue at the altar,

1445. the story that got around

1446. that the man of God

  1447. that all that happened

  1448. at the altar

1449. got killed by a lion

  1450. with the donkey

  1451. and the lion

  1452. sitting next to him

  1453. alongside the road

1454. and the word got back

  1455. to Jeroboam.

1456. Look at this in verse 33.

  1457. After this thing,

  1458. Jeroboam returned not

  1459. from his evil way,

  1460. but made again

1461. the lowest of the people

1462. priests of the high places,

  1463. whosoever he would.

  1464. He consecrated him

  1465. and he became one

  1466. of the priests

  1467. of the high places.

1468. And this thing became a sin

1469. unto the house of Jeroboam

1470. even to cut it off

  1471. and destroy it

  1472. from off the face

  1473. of the earth.

  1474. Even after all this,

  1475. Jeroboam said,

  1476. God, I don't care.

  1477. He rejected God

1478. in the midst of all that.

  1479. We need to understand

  1480. the importance

  1481. of what we see

  1482. because it's a clear,

  1483. it's going to result

  1484. in the destruction

1485. of the house of Jeroboam.

  1486. We need to understand

  1487. the importance

  1488. of trusting God,

  1489. to know God's word,

  1490. to stand in obedience

  1491. to God's word,

  1492. but also to stand

  1493. in faith

1494. of what God has said,

  1495. to do the things

  1496. that God

  1497. has declared.

  1498. Let's pray.

  1499. Heavenly Fathers,

1500. we come before you tonight,

1501. Lord, we just thank you

  1502. for your word.

1503. Lord, help us to understand

  1504. the importance

  1505. for your word.

  1506. Amen.
