  1. And go ahead and take your Bibles this morning, turn over to Mark chapter 12 as we continue

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  2. walking through our series here in the book of Mark.

  3. And today we're going to be looking at paying attention to truth, you know, keeping an eye

  4. on the right things.

  5. Because sometimes we can get our eye on the wrong things.

  6. We can get our eye upon things that people do instead of what Christ has commanded.

  7. And we're going to look at that a little bit here this morning as Jesus continues here

  8. in the temple.

  9. And we know that this Tuesday in the temple is the most recorded time frame or period here

  10. of Jesus' life.

  11. We have all these details of questions and things that they brought to him that he answered.

  12. And it reveals to everyone who he is as he walks through this and ultimately brings to

  13. light that he was not just any man, but that he was the Messiah, Christ.

  14. He was both God and man completely.

  15. And as he brought that fact forth to them, because even the scribes and the Pharisees, as we saw,

  16. were, you might say, dumbfounded by his question back to them of understanding the importance

  17. of this.

  18. And we see here as Jesus begins to wind down this day, as it's been a long day, he begins,

  19. we're going to see here, he gives some last instructions to the crowd.

  20. This is the last time Jesus is speaking to the crowd here, you know, and those around.

  21. You know, he's going to have some other interactions with his disciples and some others.

  22. But this is last main statement to the crowd, the multitude that was there.

  23. It said a little earlier in the passage here, talk to them about the common people.

  24. And there was the everyday person, which would be like you and I, and understand that, hey,

  25. this is where we need to be with the Lord and to understand those things.

  26. And so he gives some instruction here.

  27. We're going to look here, and this has to do with truth.

  28. It has to do with authority.

  29. It has to do with accountability.

  30. As we're going to begin looking here, as Jesus ties all these things together, because Jesus

  31. had just revealed, remember last week, as he dealt with the idea of the deity of Christ,

  32. that Jesus kind of downplayed, in a sense, the scribes and the Pharisees who had promoted

  33. that they knew and understood all that was going on.

  34. And Jesus, when he promoted the reality of his deity, kind of pulled that rug out, didn't

  35. he?

  36. He kind of put them in a position of, you might say, one of those awkward positions

  37. of life where you thought you had the answer, and then suddenly you find out you don't.

  38. And people would begin to question these things.

  39. And Jesus here is going to deal with a few of these things here about them, because as

  40. their understanding was not correct about who Christ would be, it would be easy to conclude

  41. that since the scribes and the Pharisees did not understand everything or even live out

  42. what they proclaimed.

  43. You know, that's still a problem today, isn't it?

  44. You know, oftentimes we know what we ought to do, but to do it's a whole different animal,

  45. isn't it?

  46. You know, the scribes and Pharisees and the people of the day when Jesus walked here upon

  47. the earth are no different than you or I in that regard.

  48. You know, we're going to look at this here this morning a little bit to understand the

  49. importance, because sometimes we'll look at others and say, well, if they don't know,

  50. then we can ignore everything about them.

  51. And we see some of that today.

  52. We see some of that today because you have people that have been in authority as pastors

  53. and teachers, and they've done things contrary to the Word of God.

  54. And people try to take that as an excuse to say, hey, now I can ignore all what God has

  55. to say.

  56. And people use that excuse.

  57. Well, if they didn't, I don't have to.

  58. But I want you to understand, Jesus points to something very important today.

  59. It doesn't matter what somebody else does.

  60. It only matters what you do, because you don't give account for what somebody else does.

  61. Ultimately, we only give account for one person, ourselves.

  62. To stand before the Lord, and we're going to see Jesus walk through this with them today,

  63. because sometimes people lose respect towards the Word of God because of wrong choices and

  64. actions of those who are supposed to be an example.

  65. You know, today we definitely don't have to see or to look far to see this of people being

  66. self-promoting.

  67. You know, they have a wrong idea of ministry.

  68. They have a wrong idea.

  69. They become self-seeking, self-righteous in what they do.

  70. The problem often is because it'll cause others to lose respect for the Lord.

  71. And as we see, Jesus is going to deal with this, because I think he's walking through this,

  72. because some people in the crowd would begin to think, well, if Jesus talks down and these

  73. scribes and Pharisees don't know everything they're supposed to know, and they have this

  74. self-righteous attitude, why do I have to pay attention to what they say?

  75. Well, what Jesus is going to point out, we're going to see very important this morning,

  76. is the fact that it's because what they say is from the Word of God, and we ought to pay

  77. attention to the Word of God.

  78. And we ought to pay attention to those things and to keep a right perspective of them.

  79. And so as we find here this morning, if you found Mark chapter 12 here this morning, we're

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  80. going to pick up here in verse 38 and just read down a couple of verses here.

  81. But if you found there in verse 38, let's stand together in honor of the reading of the

  82. Word of God here this morning.

  83. And we see here in verse 38, notice, and he said, and he said unto them in his doctrine,

  84. beware of the scribes which love to go in long clothing, in love salutations in the marketplace,

  85. and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at the feast, which devour

  86. widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers, these shall receive greater damnation.

  87. Let's pray.

  88. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you today, and Lord, we just lift this time to you as

  89. we look into your Word.

  90. Lord, help us not to lose sight of who you are and what you've done for us.

  91. Lord, help us to not base our trust upon what other people do, but our trust in you upon

  92. what you have done.

  93. Lord, of what you've provided.

  94. Lord, help us keep our eyes upon you, upon your truth.

  95. Even in the day in which we live, Lord, we can be distracted by the choices of others.

  96. But Lord, help us to draw close to you, to be attention to your truth, what you've revealed

  97. to us, Lord, that we will give account.

  98. And Lord, we pray just have your hand upon each heart here today.

  99. Lord, you know each one.

  100. You know the needs, the challenges, the struggles.

  101. Lord, we know what you've given to us.

  102. Lord, we pray just have your hand upon this time that you might stir hearts and minds towards

  103. you, that we might love you more.

  104. In Jesus' name, amen.

  105. You may be seated.

  106. You know, as we see here, Mark kind of gives us a short little three verses here in Mark

  107. that reveal some things here as Jesus begins to teach.

  108. And we need to understand that Mark kind of gives us the cliff notes of this last course

  109. that Jesus taught here.

  110. It says he taught in his doctrine.

  111. It means that Jesus taught in how he was instructing them.

  112. You know, doctrine is just that.

  113. It's teaching.

  114. It's instruction.

  115. And Jesus was instructing the people of something very important that they needed to keep in

  116. mind as they walk through these final days.

  117. You know, to understand that Jesus was going to give these instructions to everyone at this

  118. point.

  119. You know, because we know that Jesus' teaching about himself may have caused others to be to

  120. have a diminished or misunderstanding of the authority that had been placed over them.

  121. You know, when we realize that God always establishes authorities.

  122. Authority is part of God's establish.

  123. We have God as the ultimate authority over everything.

  124. We know that God establishes authority through family.

  125. You know, we have moms and dads that give authority and structure into the family.

  126. We have the church that we have a structure set.

  127. You know, you have a pastor and you have those that are put in place to guide and to direct.

  128. It doesn't make any of those greater than somebody else, but it is the structure of authority.

  129. Because God's not the author of confusion.

  130. And without authority, you have confusion.

  131. Without somebody to guide and direct, somebody that's responsible, you'll always decay into confusion.

  132. God establishes authority.

  133. From the very beginning, God has done so.

  134. And so we need to understand that God's authority is important because the scribes were the ones

  135. with the authority as to tell the people about God.

  136. That was their job.

  137. The scribes were to interpret the law.

  138. They were to give understanding to the people about what God has said.

  139. And we see here the importance of this and how this plays together because Matthew in his account

  140. gives us some insight into this passage.

  141. Because Matthew, we need to understand, remember when we talked about the gospels,

  142. the gospel of Mark is written mainly to a Gentile audience.

  143. In other words, there's some things left out of the gospel of Mark.

  144. And you might say, well, why didn't Mark talk about them?

  145. Well, because the Gentiles wouldn't have concerned themselves with it.

  146. Okay?

  147. It was foreign to them.

  148. They wouldn't have understood the pretense or the context of what was being said.

  149. But Matthew's gospel was written to the Jews.

  150. And so Matthew here gives us more record of what Jesus said here and kind of lays it out for us to understand a little better here in this.

  151. And so we understand that the scribes were the authority to the Jews.

  152. And they were there and the people looked to them to give what God's word said, how to understand it, what to do.

  153. They would even might be, you might say, the scribes were the lawyers of the day.

  154. They were the ones in authority that people would go to to take care of legal matters or to make judgments in legal matters.

  155. You know, how does the law apply?

  156. Because we need to understand it's not like today where we have a separate legal system from the church.

  157. I mean, you have these different structures set up.

  158. In the days of Jesus, the Sanhedrin, the people, the scribes, the Pharisees, the Sadducees,

  159. all these that we're going to see here talks about it.

  160. They sit at Moses' seat.

  161. Now, that's a seat of authority, a seat of a place of responsibility.

  162. And we're going to see this play together because, as we see here, first, the aim of the leaders.

  163. Because notice here in verse 38 with me that Jesus talks about what their direction is.

  164. He says, beware of the scribes.

  165. You know, the aim of the leaders is obvious.

  166. It's beware.

  167. Now, this word beware is a warning, but it's a warning in a little different sense than oftentimes you think of beware.

  168. You know, oftentimes beware is like, whoa.

  169. This is a beware that says, hey, pay attention.

  170. The word used here is one that says to be attentive, to have your eyes open, be observing.

  171. You know, to be knowing what's taking place, to understand the full picture.

  172. Because the leaders here filled the seats in places of authority.

  173. Matthew tells us this in Matthew chapter 23 in verse 2.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  174. It tells us this, saying, the scribes and the Pharisees sit in where?

  175. Moses' seat.

  176. Now, we don't have time this morning to get into this, but this goes clear back into the Old Testament

  177. when Moses brought the children of Israel out of Egypt.

  178. And when they were in the wilderness, they established 70 men that were brought out from among the people

  179. to sit in judgment and authority.

  180. This is what they're talking about here.

  181. This had continued through this time.

  182. And to understand what they're speaking of, of those that are there.

  183. And it says this in verse 3.

  184. All therefore whatsoever they bid, you observe, that observe and do.

  185. But do not ye after their works, for they say and do not.

  186. You know, I want you to understand what Jesus is saying.

  187. He says just because somebody can tell you what you need to hear,

  188. and they don't do it, it doesn't discredit the truth.

  189. The truth is the truth no matter what somebody else does.

  190. And he's bringing to light here something very important.

  191. Because notice what happens in verse 4.

  192. It says,

  193. You know, it's no different today.

  194. It's true today that those given authority quickly develop an attitude

  195. that everyone else should be held to a standard but not themselves.

  196. You know, do you see that today with people?

  197. You know what, it's no different today that we have to guard ourselves from that

  198. because it's easy when you get some authority to start abusing the authority.

  199. To use it wrongly.

  200. You have to always be on guard for those things.

  201. And we see here that they develop this wrong attitude.

  202. Because notice what Jesus tells them though.

  203. He says all, in verse 3 here of Matthew 23,

  204. He says,

  205. All therefore whatsoever they bid, you observe, that observe and do.

  206. You know what Jesus says?

  207. If they're speaking the truth of the Word of God,

  208. pay attention to the Word of God and do it.

  209. To follow the commands of God.

  210. Because he said,

  211. You know what, you're going to have people who tell you the truth

  212. and then they don't obey the same truth that they told you.

  213. That's a reality.

  214. That's part of life.

  215. And we're going to look at why that is a little bit here a little later.

  216. But I want you to understand not to lose respect for the Word of God

  217. or even the place of authority.

  218. Jesus doesn't tell them,

  219. Hey, you can ignore everything the scribes say

  220. now that you know they don't understand everything.

  221. Jesus said what?

  222. To observe and do.

  223. Let me put it this way.

  224. Jesus said this,

  225. You do what's right because you're the one that's going to stand to account

  226. and let God deal with the other.

  227. To deal with things appropriately and to think properly.

  228. Because today many people have strayed away from God

  229. because of actions of others.

  230. Because they get the idea that says,

  231. Well, they didn't do it, then it must not be true.

  232. It doesn't change the truth.

  233. We have to hold to the standard that God has given.

  234. And it applies to those especially in regard to the Word of God.

  235. You know, we are to observe or to guard what is said

  236. and then to obey it.

  237. You know, we need to be careful not to let truth and its authority be diminished

  238. because of the actions of somebody else.

  239. How somebody else uses it or applies it.

  240. Because people do that wrongly all the time.

  241. They did it in Jesus' day.

  242. They do it today.

  243. Our focus ought to be upon the truth of the Word of God.

  244. You know, Jesus calls them hypocrites.

  245. You know?

  246. And when He calls them hypocrites,

  247. He reveals that very clearly

  248. because notice there in verse 4 of the passage there in Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  249. it says,

  250. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne

  251. and lay them on men's shoulders.

  252. But notice this,

  253. But they themselves will not move with one of their fingers.

  254. You know, that's being a hypocrite.

  255. Say, hey, this is good for you to do,

  256. but I'm not going to worry about it.

  257. That's what Jesus is saying.

  258. He says,

  259. These guys are going to place burdens upon you

  260. that they wouldn't put upon themselves.

  261. They'll put expectations that they won't put upon themselves.

  262. They say, and they do not.

  263. You know, I want you to understand

  264. that placing burdens through heavy expectation

  265. is how they used and maintained their authority.

  266. They began to use this as a tool to control people.

  267. The same has been in the past here,

  268. and just even in America in the last generations,

  269. you'll see this same tool being employed.

  270. Heavy burdens placed upon people

  271. that they will not keep themselves.

  272. An expectation of using that.

  273. They placed upon men heavy burdens,

  274. heavy and grievous,

  275. because they were built and maintained on rules

  276. that needed to be followed.

  277. You know, I want you to understand

  278. that Jesus gives us commands.

  279. He gives us direction.

  280. And sometimes people will take that

  281. and use that for manipulation and control

  282. to say, how are you measuring up to the standard?

  283. I want you to understand, there's some things we ought to do,

  284. but we ought not to do them to measure to a standard.

  285. We ought to do them because we love God.

  286. Jesus says, if you love me, keep my commandments.

  287. He doesn't say, keep my commandments to be right with me.

  288. He says, if you love me, keep my commandments.

  289. It changes the weight of that responsibility, doesn't it?

  290. Because if you're always trying to measure up,

  291. you will never measure up.

  292. You will never measure or reach the standard.

  293. Take a look over in Matthew chapter 11 for a moment,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  294. because when it comes to God,

  295. God is totally contrary to how men perceive

  296. and try to grab a hold of authority.

  297. Notice what Jesus tells us here.

  298. He doesn't say that it's going to be heavy or grievous.

  299. He says this, it says,

  300. for my yoke is easy and my burden is what?

  301. Have you ever asked yourself, how is the yoke easy and the burden light when it comes to Christ?

  302. There's a lot of heavy things.

  303. Let me ask you a question.

  304. How hard is something to do if you love doing it?

  305. Does love change the perspective?

  306. Jesus says, if you love me, keep my commandments.

  307. He says, if you love me, my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  308. But if you're trying to measure up, it's grievous and heavy.

  309. We have to do that because we love him.

  310. This is because they're carried in love and not duty or obligation.

  311. You know, sometimes people use control.

  312. The Pharisees and the Sadducees and the scribes use this as a means of control

  313. and to put heavy burden upon the people saying,

  314. if you don't do exactly what we do or how we tell you, you're not going to make it.

  315. I'm glad that I'm not dependent upon what I do to get to heaven.

  316. I want you to understand what you do doesn't get you to heaven.

  317. It's only by trusting in what has been done.

  318. Jesus Christ has already accomplished all that's needed to get to heaven.

  319. You cannot do anything of yourself.

  320. But if you're saved, if you recognize him as your Savior, your love for him,

  321. we love him because he first loved us,

  322. it ought to change our spirit and attitude about these things.

  323. Because we're going to see here, look at the actions of the leaders.

  324. Look back in our text where we started there in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  325. As Jesus talks about them, notice what he says.

  326. He says, which love to go in long clothing.

  327. Notice, what is their love here?

  328. Their love is not a love for God.

  329. We're going to see here their love is a self-righteous, self-centered, self-focused love.

  330. Because it's a love about them instead of a love about God.

  331. You know, if you love God, it's going to change what you do.

  332. It's going to change where you go.

  333. It's going to change your perspective of life.

  334. It's going to change everything about your perception of the world

  335. if you're looking at it through the lens of what Christ has done for you

  336. and all the things surrounding it.

  337. If you're filtering it through the Word of God.

  338. But notice the actions of the leaders here.

  339. The valuation of these actions of the scribes and the Pharisees and Jesus

  340. reveals something because we can end up the same way.

  341. Because these are the way to get a heavy burden.

  342. Because you're always trying to measure up to something that God says,

  343. I'm not measuring you by that.

  344. Now I want you to understand what they were doing wasn't wrong.

  345. It had some elements of truth attached to it.

  346. But they were twisting the truth to focus instead upon God,

  347. they were focusing on God's self.

  348. That's how subtle that shift can be.

  349. And I want you to see here as we look through here

  350. because He reveals the nature of their actions.

  351. Their presentation of righteousness was not about loving and serving God and others,

  352. but it was a love of self.

  353. Remember, Jesus had just answered the question here

  354. just a little bit earlier before this

  355. when one of the scribes come and said,

  356. what is the greatest commandment?

  357. What did Jesus tell them?

  358. To love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,

  359. with all thy soul, with all thy mind.

  360. And what's the second?

  361. To love your neighbor is what?

  362. Yourself.

  363. You know, we sum this up oftentimes in this phrase,

  364. love God, love others.

  365. God never said love yourself.

  366. That's a whole other lesson you can do a little study on if you want.

  367. Because we have a promotion today, it's all about loving self.

  368. God never tells you to love yourself.

  369. He tells you to love Him and love others.

  370. But notice the attire that they wore,

  371. the clothing that they wore,

  372. the very choice in clothing was to draw attention to themselves as righteous.

  373. It tells us that they would go through the marketplace,

  374. they would wear these white, big flowing robes,

  375. and they'd have a big blue border around the bottom.

  376. Now to us, if we saw somebody in a white robe with blue border around the bottom,

  377. we'd look at them and say,

  378. you're really weird.

  379. You know, I'll just be honest.

  380. You know, if you saw somebody down here walking downtown like that,

  381. you'd be going,

  382. Okay.

  383. But I want you to understand because Numbers chapter 15

    Numbers 15 chapter mention

  384. commands them,

  385. if you go back to Numbers 15,

  386. in verse 38,

  387. it tells us,

  388. Speak unto the children of Israel,

  389. and bid them that they make them fringes on the borders of their garments

  390. throughout their generations,

  391. and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue

  392. that shall be unto you for a fringe,

  393. that ye may look upon it.

  394. Now the problem is,

  395. that's where they stopped,

  396. because what their focus was,

  397. Look at what I'm wearing.

  398. I'm wearing my righteousness.

  399. They wanted to draw attention to the scribes,

  400. and Pharisees were like,

  401. Look at me, how righteous I am.

  402. But they missed the point,

  403. because notice what God commanded them in Numbers.

  404. He didn't say,

  405. Do this for everybody else.

  406. He didn't say,

  407. Do this to draw attention to yourself.

  408. Notice what he said here.

  409. And it said,

  410. And it shall be unto you a fringe,

  411. that ye may look upon it,

  412. and remember all the commandments of the Lord,

  413. and do them,

  414. that ye seek not after your own heart,

  415. and your own eyes,

  416. after which ye use to go a-whoring,

  417. that ye may remember to do all my commandments,

  418. and to be holy unto your God.

  419. The attire that they love to wear,

  420. that everybody to see them in,

  421. to make themselves look righteous,

  422. God says that wasn't the purpose.

  423. The purpose is when you put it on,

  424. to remember who you're representing.

  425. It's for you to remember,

  426. to understand that if you're saved,

  427. if you're a child of God,

  428. you have a responsibility to the Savior.

  429. It wasn't for everybody else to see,

  430. it was for you to remember.

  431. That's a big difference, isn't it?

  432. God says,

  433. I want you to do this,

  434. not to put on a promotion,

  435. but I want you to do this to remind yourself.

  436. Now, today,

  437. God might have commanded us to do this a little different.

  438. He might have said,

  439. Take out that phone of yours,

  440. and every morning,

  441. put a little reminder on there,

  442. to say to remember who you represent.

  443. You know,

  444. that might not be a bad thing for us to do,

  445. first thing in the morning,

  446. is to get a little ding that says,

  447. Hey, remember who saved you.

  448. That wouldn't be a bad day to start,

  449. bad way to start the day,

  450. would it?

  451. When they got dressed in the morning,

  452. this was the purpose of this,

  453. that they might be,

  454. remember what God has done.

  455. Not to draw attention to themselves,

  456. but to the Lord personally.

  457. The command that they were following was right,

  458. but notice the purpose got distorted.

  459. It was worn for themselves.

  460. Remember,

  461. not for others to see or draw attention to themselves.

  462. The attention was to be towards God,

  463. but the scribes and Pharisees,

  464. they tell us,

  465. would parade through the marketplace

  466. in their elaborate robes

  467. so that everybody could see them.

  468. You know,

  469. one commentator I read was interesting.

  470. They said the Pharisees would flare out the bottom

  471. and have these big elaborate blue bands

  472. with these strings off them,

  473. and it says they'd almost look like they were floating.

  474. as they walked along,

  475. you know.

  476. It was a self-promotion.

  477. But that fringe and that attire

  478. was not for others.

  479. It was supposed to be for them.

  480. To remember who they represented,

  481. to remember all the commands of the Lord

  482. and to do them.

  483. And to not seek after their own heart

  484. and their own eyes.

  485. Because you know what happens?

  486. When we get our eyes and our heart

  487. on the wrong thing,

  488. we go after the wrong things.

  489. Jesus is telling them,

  490. just because the scribes are doing this,

  491. what the scribes were doing

  492. is what God commanded them,

  493. but they were using it wrongly.

  494. Let me put it a different way.

  495. Jesus is,

  496. as he goes through this,

  497. he's basically saying,

  498. hey,

  499. don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

  500. You know,

  501. because the water gets dirty

  502. when you take a bath.

  503. You don't throw all the contents

  504. of the bath out.

  505. He said,

  506. because they misuse,

  507. don't think that it's not correct.

  508. It's just the way they're using it

  509. is incorrect.

  510. Notice here,

  511. the second,

  512. they acclaimed that they craved.

  513. Notice the next thing,

  514. he says,

  515. the love of long clothing.

  516. Now,

  517. this next one,

  518. love,

  519. salutations in the marketplace.

  520. You know,

  521. salutations.

  522. You know,

  523. what's it talking about here?

  524. Well,

  525. let me give you a little insight

  526. into what it's dealing with here

  527. because as they walked through the market,

  528. it was expected

  529. when they'd walk through

  530. with their big robes

  531. and their big fringe

  532. along the bottom

  533. floating along,

  534. that everybody would stand up

  535. as they walked by.

  536. And people were supposed to stand up

  537. and acknowledge them

  538. and say,

  539. Rabbi,

  540. Master,

  541. my great one,

  542. as they walked by.

  543. The acclaim that they sought,

  544. they wanted to hold a position

  545. of prominence with people.

  546. This is another one.

  547. The respect of those in authority

  548. is a biblical principle.

  549. But I want you to understand

  550. something very important

  551. here this morning

  552. for even us today

  553. because sometimes we can take it,

  554. but people in authority

  555. do the wrong things,

  556. we lose sight of the importance

  557. that God established that authority.

  558. We have to always honor the authority

  559. in the place of that authority,

  560. but we need to understand

  561. there are sinful people

  562. who do wrong things

  563. sometimes in those places.

  564. You know,

  565. it's no different today.

  566. I mean,

  567. it's kind of funny

  568. as I was preparing this

  569. and the different things,

  570. you know,

  571. we had a little clip

  572. come on

  573. of some people

  574. that were going to pray

  575. for a presidential candidate

  576. and they're like,

  577. well,

  578. we have Bishop such and such

  579. and Reverend such and such

  580. and,

  581. you know,

  582. all these different individuals

  583. and I'm thinking,

  584. you know,

  585. most of these guys

  586. have those titles

  587. and want to promote it

  588. for self-promotion.

  589. Look how important I am.

  590. You know?

  591. It's kind of like

  592. when you're talking to people

  593. and, you know,

  594. I've even had this happen,

  595. you know,

  596. where some,

  597. well,

  598. I'm doctor such and such.

  599. You know?

  600. I want you to understand

  601. titles are important

  602. but those things

  603. ought to be given

  604. out of respect

  605. for what they hold

  606. and not for the person.

  607. And sometimes people

  608. think they merit it.

  609. You know?

  610. There's nothing wrong

  611. in giving honor appropriately.

  612. You know?

  613. Titles do show respect

  614. of position and authority.

  615. You know?

  616. It's kind of like

  617. when you hear kids

  618. call their mom and dad

  619. by their first name.

  620. That to me

  621. is a disrespectful thing.

  622. Because it's not honoring

  623. the authority

  624. that's over them.

  625. Now I understand.

  626. I know my kids

  627. will tell you,

  628. well, sometimes,

  629. you know,

  630. I've got to call mom

  631. by name to get her attention

  632. because she's not answering.

  633. You know?

  634. I want you to understand

  635. your primary thing

  636. ought to be referring

  637. to them in a respectful manner.

  638. Having that right respect

  639. and honor in place.

  640. Because it's not for them

  641. as kind of like

  642. just Mr. and Mrs.

  643. You know?

  644. Those are things

  645. that are lost

  646. sometimes within

  647. because of the,

  648. but we miss the importance.

  649. You know,

  650. even in the military

  651. you address somebody

  652. by their rank.

  653. You know?

  654. You think about that.

  655. You know,

  656. they'll call them

  657. Sergeant such and such

  658. or Captain such and such.

  659. I want you to understand

  660. some people

  661. want to hear that acclaim

  662. but it's actually

  663. not to acclaim them.

  664. It's just to give honor

  665. to the position.

  666. You know,

  667. it's kind of like

  668. when we refer to a president

  669. as president.

  670. You know what that's doing?

  671. It's not giving promotion

  672. to them.

  673. It's giving prominence

  674. to the authority

  675. that's been given them.

  676. And we need to be careful

  677. in our reference

  678. to those things

  679. and even things

  680. associated with it.

  681. We could go into

  682. a lot of different things

  683. here on that

  684. but I want you to understand

  685. the same is true

  686. even within the church.

  687. You know,

  688. there's individuals,

  689. you know,

  690. I like to go by

  691. Pastor Smith

  692. or, you know,

  693. because it's appropriate

  694. for the office and place

  695. that God has placed me.

  696. But the one thing

  697. you'll notice

  698. if you're around here

  699. very long,

  700. I don't demand it.

  701. I know guys

  702. who demand that.

  703. I don't think

  704. that's right to demand it.

  705. But it's right.

  706. It's what we ought to do.

  707. Not because of who I am

  708. but because the office

  709. that God has placed me in.

  710. Because we're going to look here

  711. when God puts you in authority

  712. He also gives you

  713. extra responsibility.

  714. And with that responsibility

  715. you never separate

  716. responsibility

  717. from accountability.

  718. Those things are always

  719. tied together.

  720. The only thing

  721. I'll ask of you

  722. is do not call me

  723. Reverend Smith.

  724. If you want to look it up

  725. in the Bible

  726. it's only used one place

  727. and it's only spoken

  728. towards one person.

  729. That might be a fancy title

  730. that you have

  731. from a piece of paper

  732. but it doesn't

  733. something that's not

  734. I don't think

  735. it's a good title

  736. of myself

  737. because it doesn't

  738. reflect what we do

  739. but let's move on.

  740. Somebody messed with the clock.

  741. Alright, let's go

  742. to the next one.

  743. Attention they desire.

  744. Attention they desire

  745. the chief seats

  746. in the synagogues.

  747. You know,

  748. they sit in the chief seats

  749. both in the synagogue

  750. or at the feast.

  751. They sit at Moses' seats

  752. which is a place

  753. of authority.

  754. They sought the position.

  755. They desired to be important.

  756. It was not a place

  757. of responsibility to them.

  758. It was a place of attention.

  759. You know,

  760. sometimes people in leadership

  761. love to sit

  762. in places of attention.

  763. And sometimes

  764. the place you sit

  765. is giving honor

  766. to that person.

  767. There's times

  768. appropriate for that

  769. but as an individual

  770. we ought to seek

  771. to honor God

  772. above ourselves.

  773. To seek Him,

  774. desire,

  775. we ought not to desire

  776. to be important

  777. because when you're

  778. in authority,

  779. if God puts you

  780. in a place of authority

  781. you need to remember

  782. it's a place of responsibility

  783. and accountability.

  784. It's a place

  785. that has great merit.

  786. Notice what Jesus

  787. told His disciples.

  788. Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10:43

  789. verse 43

  790. it says,

  791. So shall it not be among you

  792. but whosoever

  793. will be great among you

  794. shall be your what?

  795. Minister.

  796. And whosoever you

  797. will be the chiefest

  798. shall be servant of all.

  799. Matthew 23

  800. Jesus records

  801. this same statement

  802. as He's talking about this

  803. in Matthew 23

  804. He says,

  805. He that is greatest among you

  806. shall be your servant

  807. and whosoever shall exalt himself

  808. shall be abased

  809. and he that humble

  810. shall humble himself

  811. shall be exalted.

  812. He said,

  813. don't worry about the scribes

  814. seeking self-seeking desire

  815. to promote themselves.

  816. Make sure you respect

  817. the position

  818. that they've been given.

  819. Jesus is reminding us

  820. something very important.

  821. just because they're hypocrites

  822. doesn't negate the truth.

  823. We need to pay attention

  824. to the truth.

  825. Notice the appetite

  826. that they had.

  827. It says,

  828. devour widows' houses.

  829. You know,

  830. have you ever wondered

  831. what that's talking about?

  832. How many times have you read that

  833. and really,

  834. have you ever looked into it?

  835. That phrase is this

  836. because remember

  837. the scribes were the lawyers.

  838. And what would happen

  839. is widows would come

  840. and they would need legal help

  841. or setting things up

  842. and they would,

  843. these scribes would do things

  844. to manipulate the law

  845. to take the possessions

  846. that they were to live on

  847. and to either take it for themselves

  848. or to give it to the temple.

  849. And it wasn't the fact

  850. they were giving it to God.

  851. It was the fact

  852. that they were using it

  853. to get a kickback to themselves.

  854. Devour widows' houses.

  855. They were using their opportunity

  856. as a master of the law

  857. to manipulate

  858. and funneling it

  859. through the temple.

  860. Then we have the announcements

  861. that they declared.

  862. You know,

  863. look at what the next phrase says.

  864. Notice this.

  865. It says,

  866. and for pretense,

  867. make long prayers.

  868. For pretense,

  869. make long prayers.

  870. You know,

  871. Jesus addressed that

  872. over in Luke 18.

  873. Remember in Luke 18

  874. where you find the Pharisee

  875. that Jesus talks about?

  876. It says,

  877. and the Pharisee stood

  878. and prayed thus with himself.

  879. That's a whole other message

  880. to itself.

  881. Prayed thus to himself,

  882. God,

  883. I thank thee

  884. that I am not

  885. as other men are,

  886. extortioners

  887. and unjust,

  888. adulterers

  889. or even as this publican.

  890. I fast twice a week.

  891. I give tithes

  892. of all that I possess.

  893. Now remember,

  894. this was not a private prayer.

  895. This was a public prayer.

  896. What would be your response

  897. if I stood up here on Sunday

  898. and oh,

  899. Lord,

  900. thank you for I'm not

  901. like the dreadful sinners

  902. I'm preaching to.

  903. I mean,

  904. when we put it in that phrase,

  905. it makes it sound

  906. really ludicrous,

  907. doesn't it?

  908. But that's really

  909. what Jesus said

  910. this Pharisee was praying.

  911. A self-promotion

  912. and want to draw attention

  913. to themselves

  914. by giving long prayers,

  915. not seeking the Lord,

  916. but to announce

  917. their own righteousness

  918. that they're better

  919. than everybody else.

  920. You know,

  921. we need to know

  922. the aim and actions

  923. of the scribes

  924. are the same

  925. that they'll give account for.

  926. Because notice

  927. the last phrase

  928. of verse 40 there.

  929. These shall receive

  930. greater damnation.

  931. The accounting

  932. that God gives

  933. to leaders,

  934. but I want you to understand

  935. God gives account

  936. to each one of us.

  937. We can look at others

  938. and it's always easier

  939. to look at somebody else

  940. and say,

  941. yeah,

  942. they're messed up.

  943. Have you ever noticed

  944. it's always easier

  945. to point out

  946. somebody else's problems

  947. and flaws?

  948. And the reality is

  949. we need to be careful

  950. because we need to be

  951. looking at our own.

  952. We need to have that mirror

  953. of the Word of God

  954. impacting who we are

  955. instead of worrying

  956. about what somebody

  957. else is doing.

  958. Jesus concludes

  959. with a great reminder

  960. that what others do

  961. and how they observe

  962. and do

  963. will not in any way

  964. diminish the responsibility

  965. that each of us has

  966. to give account.

  967. It says the scribes here,

  968. Jesus' assessment,

  969. his accounting of them

  970. was this,

  971. they're going to receive

  972. a greater damnation

  973. or a greater judgment.

  974. The word there

  975. for damnation

  976. is just that,

  977. it's an accounting.

  978. That God's going to make them

  979. give greater account

  980. for their choices

  981. in what they do.

  982. That judgment,

  983. that accountability.

  984. Throw over to Hebrews chapter 13

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  985. for a moment

  986. because sometimes

  987. this verse is used wrongly

  988. and a lot of people

  989. like the first part of it

  990. but they forget about

  991. another part in there

  992. and sometimes

  993. even preachers

  994. will use this wrongly,

  995. you know,

  996. and we notice here

  997. where it says,

  998. obey them that have rule

  999. over you

  1000. and submit yourselves

  1001. for they watch

  1002. for your souls.

1003. Now notice that next phrase,

  1004. that's the part

1005. you got to keep in mind

  1006. on everybody's part

  1007. to who,

1008. as they must give what?

  1009. Account.

  1010. You know,

  1011. whenever you see

  1012. that word judgment,

  1013. damnation,

  1014. accounting,

1015. you've got to pay attention

1016. because let me tell you this,

  1017. if God gives you

  1018. a place of leadership,

  1019. a place of authority,

  1020. if God gives you

  1021. a place of responsibility,

1022. that could be any place

  1023. from being a dad

  1024. and a father

  1025. to being a pastor

  1026. or a deacon

  1027. or just serving God

  1028. someplace

  1029. or in a position

  1030. of authority

  1031. within society,

1032. I want you to understand

1033. God's going to hold you

  1034. to account

  1035. of the responsibilities

  1036. attached.

  1037. He says,

  1038. guys,

  1039. don't get your eyes

  1040. on the scribes

  1041. and the Pharisees.

  1042. Keep your eyes

  1043. on the truth.

  1044. Pay attention

  1045. to the truth

  1046. because that's to what

1047. you're going to give account.

  1048. That's why Jesus

  1049. reminds them

  1050. of that authority

  1051. given to them

  1052. to keep an eye

  1053. on the truth

  1054. that's before them

  1055. because the simple fact

  1056. is this,

  1057. one day,

  1058. just as the scribes

  1059. and the Pharisees

1060. would be held to account,

  1061. the fact is

1062. that so will you and I,

  1063. everyone will give

  1064. account to the Lord.

  1065. The question is

  1066. when the time comes,

  1067. what kind of accounting

1068. is going to take place

  1069. because everybody

1070. will stand before the Lord.

1071. The Bible makes it clear

  1072. there's nobody exempt

1073. but I want you to understand

  1074. when you have Christ

  1075. as your Savior,

1076. it changes how that happens

  1077. because the reality

  1078. is this,

  1079. Romans 14 says,

  1080. but why dost thou

  1081. judge thy brother

  1082. or why dost thou

1083. set it not thy brother

1084. for we shall all stand

  1085. before the judgment seat

  1086. of Christ.

1087. I want you to understand

  1088. the judgment seat

  1089. of Christ

1090. is not for lost people.

  1091. The judgment seat

  1092. of Christ

  1093. is for people

  1094. who have called

  1095. upon the Lord,

  1096. those who are saved

1097. who are a child of God.

  1098. And what's different

  1099. about that,

  1100. instead of Jesus

  1101. being your judge,

  1102. he's your advocate.

  1103. He's the one standing

  1104. beside you

1105. and not in front of you.

  1106. In a courtroom,

  1107. there's a big difference

  1108. between the advocate

  1109. beside you

  1110. and the judge

  1111. before you.

  1112. If you have Christ

  1113. as your Savior,

  1114. he stands beside you.

  1115. The Bible tells us

  1116. he is our advocate

  1117. with the Father.

  1118. You'll have Christ

  1119. standing beside you

  1120. at that time

  1121. and you'll be judged

  1122. differently

  1123. because all your sin

  1124. has been placed

  1125. under the blood

  1126. of Jesus Christ,

  1127. your advocate.

  1128. But the Bible speaks

  1129. of another judgment

  1130. of accountability.

  1131. Revelation chapter 20

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  1132. and verse 10,

  1133. or excuse me,

  1134. verse 12 says,

1135. and I saw the dead,

  1136. small and great,

  1137. stand before God.

  1138. One day you're going

  1139. to give account

1140. and the Bible makes it clear

1141. that one day you're going

1142. to stand before Jesus Christ

  1143. the righteous

  1144. and give account.

1145. This judgment is too late.

  1146. This is a pronouncement

  1147. of judgment.

  1148. When you stand,

  1149. Revelation 20 speaks

  1150. of the sentencing

  1151. because the Bible says

  1152. that at this point

1153. you'll stand before him guilty.

1154. And when you're already guilty,

  1155. there's only one thing

  1156. left to do

1157. and that's to pass the sentence.

  1158. You're going to stand

  1159. before God,

1160. you're either going to stand

1161. there to give to account

  1162. that you're guilty

  1163. before God

  1164. and have a sentence

1165. or by the grace of God.

1166. If you've called upon Christ

  1167. as your Savior,

  1168. recognizing you're a sinner

  1169. that needs a Savior

  1170. and called upon him,

  1171. the Bible says

1172. it will stand before him

  1173. not in condemnation

  1174. but in just

1175. with the advocate beside us

  1176. judging us

  1177. for reward

  1178. and not for condemnation.

  1179. The reality is

1180. which one are you going to stand?

  1181. Because you will stand

1182. before one or the other.

1183. And there's only one person

  1184. in the room

1185. that can give an answer

  1186. for where you're going

  1187. to stand today.

  1188. That's you

  1189. with the choice

  1190. that you've made

  1191. with Christ.

  1192. As heads are bowed

  1193. and eyes are closed

  1194. this morning,

  1195. what about you today?

  1196. Are you making decisions

  1197. because of what

  1198. somebody else has done?

  1199. Are you making decisions

  1200. based upon the truth

  1201. of God's Word?

1202. People may do things wrongly

1203. but don't get your attention

  1204. on what others do.

1205. I want to encourage you

  1206. to keep your attention

  1207. on the truth.

  1208. Keep your attention

1209. on the things of God.

  1210. What about you today?

  1211. Heavenly Father

1212. as we come before you

1213. as we have an opportunity

1214. to respond here this morning.

1215. Lord, you know each heart,

  1216. each life here today.

  1217. Lord, you know those

1218. who have called upon you.

  1219. You know those

  1220. who have not.

  1221. You know those

  1222. who are struggling

1223. with what others have done.

  1224. That need to let

  1225. those things go

  1226. and to say,

1227. Lord, I want to make sure

1228. I am in the right standing

  1229. with you

  1230. according to the truth

1231. of the Word of God.

1232. Lord, help us to see clearly

  1233. the need to trust

  1234. and pay attention

  1235. to your truth

  1236. and not what others

  1237. do with it.

  1238. And Lord,

1239. we just turn this time

  1240. to you, Lord,

  1241. that we might,

  1242. you might work upon

  1243. hearts and lives

1244. here in a mighty way.

  1245. Your Spirit would convict

  1246. and convince,

  1247. encourage and strengthen.

1248. Lord, you know the need

1249. of each one here today.

1250. Lord, we ask it all

  1251. in Jesus' name.

  1252. As the piano plays,

  1253. what about you today?

  1254. Thank you.
