  1. We've been going through our series here looking at the kings and going through the transitions.

  2. Last time we got to the point there with Abijah, and as he had passed through, now passed on,

  3. we're going to look today here at his son Asa, who comes to the throne and the things with that

  4. on him. And then 2 Chronicles chapter 14 is where we're going to spend a little time. I encourage

    2 Chronicles 14 chapter mention

  5. you to go ahead, if you don't know, when you get a Bible with a little ribbon in it, it's

  6. a benefit. You can use that to mark something. And one of the things you can do that for is

  7. when the preachers, because we're going to be bouncing between two books tonight, okay?

  8. So you can put that one marker in 1 Kings chapter 15, and then you can put the other marker there

    1 Kings 15 chapter mention

  9. in 2 Chronicles chapter 14, and that way it'll help you get back and forth a little faster

    2 Chronicles 14 chapter mention

  10. here this evening, because we're going to be going back and forth on that. But the transition

  11. is tonight, from Abijah, we know that he sought to honor the Lord God of his fathers and had

  12. sparked some dynamics there within the people that want to worship God, but his heart was

  13. not perfect before God, in that he spoke about it out of one side, but did other things off

  14. the other? You know? When we realize that that has an impact upon everybody, it has an impact

  15. on society, especially as leaders. When we do that, we're going to find his son Asa is going

  16. to be different. A decade of peace and prosperity in the land was going to come. And we're going

  17. to see the things that led up to that, and the things associated with that. And why did that

  18. come about? Because really, as we're going to see Asa come on the scene here, there was going

  19. to be a revival in the land. There's going to be some things changed for the good. And

  20. some things that he did as a leader in this transition that made those things come to be.

  21. That allowed God to work and to use those things, because we have a responsibility to the Lord. You know,

  22. Asa had seen the results of trusting the Lord. If you remember just a few years before he became

  23. king, his father had been at Mount Ephraim. And we know that Jeroboam and his forces had surrounded

  24. him with a superior force, and they cried out to God. You know, it tells us in 2 Chronicles 13,

  25. it says, and thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah

  26. prepared because they relied upon the Lord God of their fathers. You know, there was a quasi,

  27. you might say, revival happening because God had their attention. But I want you to understand,

  28. oftentimes, even as we see today, things will happen and God will get people's attention.

  29. But our attention span gets pretty short if it doesn't have an impact on us as a person.

  30. God wants us not to just understand the big picture, but understand the personal picture.

  31. Because it's people that makes a difference. And the problem remained that Abijah outwardly

  32. recognized the Lord, but was still just the God of his fathers. It was making recognition to what had

  33. been. You know, and it's very easy to live off what others did, or what others accomplished,

  34. and not realizing that it's our responsibility for where we are to do what we're supposed to do,

  35. that others can look back at us and say, hey, we want to see God's blessing that they had because they

  36. served the Lord. You know, not to live in the past, but to realize God's blessing and those things.

  37. You know, they still just worshiping the God of their fathers, the God of David, the God of Solomon,

  38. and God of Rehoboam. You know, we realize that even Rehoboam, if you remember, he saw what the

  39. Lord had done through his father Solomon and recognized it, yet his problem was very simple.

  40. We found in 2 Chronicles 12, where it says he did evil because he prepared not his heart to seek

  41. the Lord. You know, in other words, he knew things about God. He knew what he ought to do,

  42. but he made a choice that didn't prepare him to do what he ought to do. Because you don't do the

  43. right things by accident. You know, you don't do the right things. They don't just happen by happenstance.

  44. Right things happen because of purpose, because of direction. Now, evil, on the other hand,

  45. you have to prepare to do evil. You know, evil usually finds you. You know, opportunity to do

  46. evil shows up. That's when preparation to do right is important because it is right there among us.

  47. And so we find here that this cause caused Abijah to not draw close to the Lord, but he honored the

  48. Lord. It was more of a national God that they had. They worshiped God as a big picture. You know,

  49. remember he said that, you know, we worship God. All the sacrifices are happening. All the things are

  50. happening that ought to be happening, you know, according to the law, as far as the sacrifices and

  51. the honoring him with the priests and all the different elements that were there. He ensured the

  52. sacrifices were accomplished in the prescribed way, according to the law given by Moses. But now Abijah dies

  53. and his son Asa now comes to power. And we're going to see that his reign is made a note that he has a

  54. decade of peace that comes when Asa comes on the scene. And if you just read that part, you begin to

  55. think, well, man, that was pretty good. God just put it at peace. I want you to understand there's some

  56. decisions that Asa made when he became king that God could allow peace to come. Because he made a

  57. decision in a direction of what direction he was going to take and what he was going to do. And so

  58. we're going to pick up here this evening in 2 Chronicles chapter 14. Let's look here at verse 1 here

    2 Chronicles 14 chapter mention

  59. tonight. And it says, And Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David.

  60. And Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his day the land was quiet ten years. You know, we know that

  61. his father Abijah had been at conflict with Jeroboam, and they continued in conflict. But when Asa came on

  62. the scene, there was something that changed, that God gave peace. In his days the land was quiet.

  63. Ten years. That word there means there was a peace that lasted. There was not a conflict. There was a

  64. time of prosperity that took place during this. And between the devastating defeat of the northern

  65. tribes of Jeroboam, you know, some may say, well, Asa had enjoyed peace because his father destroyed

  66. those that were trying to stir up the peace. But I believe that was only part of it when you look at

  67. Scripture. It may have been the outward picture that you could put, but I think that whether his

  68. father did that or not, because of the choices that Asa made, there would have been quiet in the land.

  69. Because of the choices that he made, and the things that God was blessing them. And we're going to see

  70. here that Asa began his reign with a different focus when it came to worship. It wasn't just going through

  71. the steps of worship. Have you ever noticed we can get caught up in the process of worship?

  72. We can get caught up in this is what we do. This is, you know, you come to church and what we have,

  73. we sing some songs, we worship first, and then we listen to a message.

  74. By human nature, we can get caught up in repetition of this is just what we do, and it's an expectation

  75. of what we do, and the order that you do it in, and walking through those things, and we become very

  76. just focused upon the process. But we're going to find here that Asa moved from just the process

  77. to making it personal. Because true worship

  78. happens as individuals.

  79. Now we can worship God together, but it's a congregation of individuals

  80. that are worshiping God.

  81. God is not concerned because we gather together to sing songs to Him

  82. as much as the individual hearts singing the songs.

  83. And we're going to see here that Asa brings this out

  84. because notice here in verse 2 of chapter 14 it says,

  85. notice what it says,

  86. And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord.

  87. And notice that next phrase.

  88. His God.

  89. His father's comment was they were going to,

  90. he wanted to follow the God of his fathers.

  91. But now we find that Asa says that no,

  92. he's not just the God of my fathers,

  93. he is my God.

  94. You know, that ought to be a desire as a parent

  95. that our kids move from following the God

  96. that you have presented to them,

  97. the God that you have hopefully brought them up

  98. in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

  99. But you know, the danger is that sometimes

  100. it can become just that, it's what they do.

  101. It's a process and it hasn't impacted them personally.

  102. You know, we want our kids to say,

  103. you know, no matter what mom and dad do from here,

  104. God is my God.

  105. He's mine.

  106. He's not just generic.

  107. He's personal.

  108. But Asa did that which was good and right

  109. in the eyes of the Lord, his God.

  110. Asa's desire to do what was both,

  111. was right both personally and publicly,

  112. we need to remember that he was now king of Judah

  113. and had a responsibility to more than just himself.

  114. You know, leaders have a great responsibility

  115. and we're going to see this play out

  116. because this position brought upon him

  117. a responsibility to do that was not only just

  118. right before the eyes of God,

  119. the good and right in the eyes of the Lord.

  120. What is that?

  121. He was doing that with jest and right

  122. along with restraining evil in the land.

  123. You know, because remember,

  124. we've been talking about government

  125. on Sunday morning and Sunday school.

  126. What's the primary purpose of government?

  127. Is to do what?

  128. To allow good to prosper and to restrain evil.

  129. To remove evil from the land.

  130. You know, we can apply this

  131. even in the election from yesterday.

  132. One thing that happened is

  133. we restrained some evil in the land.

  134. There's not, that's something to rejoice about

  135. that evil is restrained,

  136. but I want you to understand

  137. that you cannot totally control evil.

  138. That's the reason you restrain evil.

  139. Because people will do evil things

  140. no matter what.

  141. You know, I always love when people say,

  142. well, if we just had a better environment

  143. for them to grow up in,

  144. they wouldn't do bad things.

  145. You know what?

  146. If that was the case,

  147. Adam and Eve would have never rebelled against God.

  148. They were in a perfect environment.

  149. In a perfect creation

  150. that everything was good.

  151. It was right.

  152. Everything was operating correctly.

  153. And yet they turned against God.

  154. You know what that tells us?

  155. That the environment itself,

  156. environment helps,

  157. but environment doesn't direct.

  158. A godly environment will help you make right choices,

  159. but it doesn't force you to make right choices.

  160. You still have a personal application.

  161. So we're going to see here,

  162. first, Asa did what his grandfather did not to,

  163. and that was prepare his heart to seek the Lord.

  164. You know, knowing what God had established to do.

  165. You know, I think that Asa may have done,

  166. the Bible doesn't tell us,

  167. but I'm wondering if Asa did

  168. what the law said he was supposed to do as king.

  169. You know, it's always interesting as you read through it,

  170. do you realize that God gave instructions

  171. to kings in Deuteronomy?

  172. Now let me ask you a question.

  173. Did they have kings in the time

  174. when they wrote Deuteronomy?

  175. No, there was not kings yet.

  176. You've got to go through the time of the judges.

  177. You have all these things.

  178. But turn over quick to Deuteronomy chapter 17.

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  179. Because you'll find this interesting.

  180. Because I think if Asa did do this,

  181. it may be one of those things

  182. that led to what he did

  183. and the decisions that he made.

  184. Because look at what God commands him.

  185. Turn to Deuteronomy chapter 17.

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  186. Deuteronomy chapter 17.

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  187. And we find here in Deuteronomy chapter 17,

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  188. down there in verse 15.

  189. Go over there to the right spot here.

  190. Follow along.

  191. It says,

  192. Look at verse 17.

  193. Neither shall he multiply wives to himself

  194. that his heart turn not away.

  195. Now remember,

  196. what happened to Solomon?

  197. His heart was turned away from what?

  198. Or by what?

  199. When he multiplied wives.

  200. And his wives turned his heart

  201. away from God.

  202. Now it's interesting.

  203. This is hundreds of years previous

  204. that God gave him warning.

  205. Notice what's next here

  206. as we look at this.

  207. It says in verse 18,

  208. And when he,

  209. it shall be,

  210. when he sit up upon the throne

  211. of his kingdom.

  212. Now notice this,

  213. that he shall write him

  214. a copy of this law

  215. in a book out of

  216. that which is before the priests,

  217. the Levites.

  218. And it shall be with him

  219. and he shall read therein

  220. all the days of his life.

  221. Now I want you to notice this.

  222. What did God command the kings to do?

  223. They were supposed to go into the temple

  224. and make a personal copy

  225. of the law.

  226. Have you ever tried to copy something?

  227. Do you get a better grasp on something

  228. when you have to copy something?

  229. But notice what the purpose

  230. of this self-copy was,

  231. was that he might take it back

  232. and do what with it?

  233. And read it, you know?

  234. That he had his own copy

  235. of the word of God,

  236. you know?

  237. That it shall be with him

  238. and he shall read therein

  239. all the days of his life.

  240. Now notice this,

  241. that he may learn

  242. to fear the Lord his God

  243. to keep all the words of this law

  244. and these statutes to do them.

  245. You know,

  246. I want you to understand,

  247. God knew what was going to happen

  248. when the kings,

  249. the time of the kings would come.

  250. And I think, you know,

  251. like I said,

  252. the Bible doesn't tell us,

  253. but from Ace's response here,

  254. I think he might have actually done this.

  255. Because we see his turn

  256. for revival in the land,

  257. because it wasn't just being,

  258. let's go through the motions,

  259. he says this needs to be personal.

  260. And he took his responsibility personal.

  261. And we see here,

  262. it caused him to see the necessity

  263. even to purge the kingdom

  264. of the idols and the abominations

  265. that had been allowed

  266. by his fathers before him.

  267. And even Solomon allowed them

  268. after his wives turned his heart

  269. away from the Lord.

  270. They worshipped Ashtaroth

  271. and they had all sorts of abominations

  272. that they allowed in the land.

  273. But we find here,

  274. Asa sparks a revival

  275. because, you know,

  276. the one thing we understand

  277. that the closer you get to God,

  278. the clearer sin becomes.

  279. And not just the sin of somebody else,

  280. but your own.

  281. Because it reveals our heart

  282. when we draw close to God.

  283. It reveals who we are

  284. and who he is.

  285. And so I think as Asa drew close to the Lord,

  286. it impacted him, you know.

  287. He understood that if he was going to be able

  288. to deal with what was outside,

  289. he had to deal with what was inside.

  290. He had to deal with what was inside himself first.

  291. Have you ever noticed

  292. it's a lot easier to point out

  293. somebody else's sin?

  294. You know?

  295. Have you ever noticed

  296. that it's a lot easier

  297. to point at somebody else's?

  298. And look at them.

  299. But it's a big difference

  300. when we have to reflect upon ourself,

  301. isn't it?

  302. To understand,

  303. who am I

  304. before God?

  305. What's my responsibility?

  306. You know,

  307. take a look at,

  308. we'll look at a little application here.

  309. Go over to Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  310. for a moment.

  311. Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  312. Because as a believer,

  313. now I want you to understand

  314. that you're going to find things

  315. operated a different way,

  316. some in the Old Testament

  317. than it does today.

  318. Because we are under the age of grace,

  319. there's a little,

  320. some different things that happen.

  321. And as we're going to go through this,

  322. you're going to see this come about.

  323. Because I want you to remember

  324. in the Old Testament,

  325. the Spirit of God

  326. would come and go off of people.

  327. The Spirit of God

  328. would come

  329. and be upon somebody

  330. and then the Spirit of God

  331. could depart.

  332. In our age,

  333. what does God promise?

  334. He says,

  335. the Spirit is the earnest

  336. of our salvation.

  337. He says,

  338. I will never leave thee,

  339. nor what?

  340. Forsake thee.

  341. He says,

  342. I am with you always,

  343. even unto the end of the earth.

  344. You know,

  345. we live in a blessed generation

  346. when it comes to even

  347. our relationship with God.

  348. That we have the Spirit of God

  349. that indwells the believer.

  350. Notice here in Colossians,

  351. in chapter 3,

  352. look at verse 1,

  353. it says,

  354. If ye then be risen with Christ,

  355. seek those things which are above,

  356. where Christ sitteth

  357. on the right hand of God.

  358. Set your affections

  359. on the things above,

  360. not the things of earth,

  361. for ye are dead,

  362. and your life is hid

  363. with Christ in God.

  364. When Christ,

  365. who is our life,

  366. shall appear,

  367. then shall ye also

  368. appear with him in glory.

  369. You know,

  370. look down at verse 8,

  371. it says,

  372. But now ye also

  373. put off these things,

  374. anger,

  375. malice,

  376. wrath,

  377. malice,

  378. blasphemy,

  379. filthy communication

  380. out of your mouth.

  381. Lie not one to another,

  382. saying that ye have put off

  383. the old man with his deeds,

  384. and have put on the new man

  385. which is renewed in knowledge

  386. after the image of him

  387. that created him.

  388. In other words,

  389. how do we grow closer

  390. to Christ even today?

  391. It's by knowing

  392. the Word of God.

  393. To know what God has

  394. and what he would have for us.

  395. And Asa had a desire

  396. to keep the law,

  397. not in part,

  398. but in whole.

  399. Just as David did.

  400. You know,

  401. look up to 1 Kings.

  402. 1 Kings chapter 15.

    1 Kings 15 chapter mention

  403. See,

  404. if you had your little ribbon there,

  405. or something,

  406. note card,

  407. you can find it quick,

  408. see?

  409. Look down at verse 11.

  410. It says,

  411. And Asa did that

  412. which was right

  413. in the eyes of the Lord

  414. as David his father.

  415. we see here

  416. something very important here.

  417. We see that he took it personally.

  418. Just as David did.

  419. Did David take his relationship

  420. with God personally?

  421. I mean,

  422. I don't think you can read

  423. through the things

  424. that David wrote

  425. and not say that God

  426. didn't take his relationship

  427. with God personally.

  428. You know,

  429. it was a personal

  430. communication with God.

  431. He wanted to restore

  432. the joy of his salvation

  433. even after he sinned.

  434. That was his desire.

  435. God,

  436. take this away.

  437. Restore that relationship.

  438. Restore that connection

  439. that we had.

  440. But he did that

  441. which was right

  442. in the eyes of the Lord.

  443. And we find here

  444. that he took away

  445. the idol worship

  446. that had plagued

  447. the kingdom

  448. from his grandfather

  449. Solomon on.

  450. And what he had brought in

  451. in the second part

  452. we're going to see here

  453. is Asa first took it personally

  454. but then he took

  455. a responsibility publicly.

  456. There was a public

  457. responsibility

  458. that he did

  459. that was even

  460. partially personal.

  461. Look back over

  462. in 2 Chronicles chapter 14.

    2 Chronicles 14 chapter mention

  463. 2 Chronicles chapter 14.

    2 Chronicles 14 chapter mention

  464. And we find down here

  465. as we continue reading

  466. in here in 2 Chronicles 14

  467. down in verse 3

  468. notice what he did

  469. what his action was.

  470. It says he took away

  471. the altars

  472. of the strange gods

  473. in the high places

  474. and break down the images

  475. and cut down the groves.

  476. You know his father

  477. Abijah promoted

  478. keeping the temple sacrifices

  479. but where his problem was

  480. is that was just

  481. a religious function.

  482. He also said

  483. hey if you want to do

  484. something else

  485. go do it.

  486. He allowed all the other

  487. sacrifices to take place

  488. all the other abominations

  489. that we're going to see

  490. here tonight

  491. you know we understand

  492. that his father

  493. had promoted

  494. you know this dual idea

  495. it was not a personal

  496. obligation towards God

  497. which is what we're going

  498. to find Asa

  499. puts forth

  500. and not allow

  501. co-worship with false gods.

  502. He says

  503. you have to choose

  504. who you're going to worship.

  505. But he says

  506. under my leadership

  507. we're not going to allow

  508. these things to be here

  509. because it's

  510. his responsibility.

  511. What direction

  512. is the nation going to go?

  513. It was upon him

  514. to make that decision

  515. and we're going to find here

  516. it starts not only

  517. with him personally

  518. but it starts in his household.

  519. Because he does something here

  520. that would probably

  521. be pretty tough to do.

  522. His first order of business

  523. was going to remove

  524. the idols

  525. that officially sanctioned sin.

  526. Abijah

  527. his father

  528. had allowed those things

  529. to take place

  530. he had not removed them

  531. because of

  532. Asa's grandmother.

  533. His grandmother

  534. was an open worshiper

  535. of Ashtaroth.

  536. Matter of fact

  537. we're going to find here

  538. that she made her own idol

  539. that she worshipped.

  540. In other words

  541. it wasn't even incognito

  542. it was blatantly public.

  543. Everybody could see it.

  544. He removed those things

  545. and we're going to look at this

  546. here in a little bit

  547. but Asa

  548. did so

  549. and he's rising

  550. to the occasion

  551. because God

  552. had first

  553. moved within him

  554. that he wanted to do right

  555. in the eyes of the Lord

  556. and he removed

  557. and destroyed the idols

  558. and removed

  559. even the idols

  560. his father had made.

  561. He cleansed his household

  562. from the false worship

  563. and the things

  564. that they had worshipped.

  565. You know

  566. look over in 1 Kings chapter 15

    1 Kings 15 chapter mention

  567. and you'll find there

  568. look down at verse 12

  569. we'll get back

  570. to the first part

  571. of verse 12

  572. a little later

  573. but I want you to see

  574. this note

  575. of his household

  576. because notice

  577. what it says

  578. in verse 12

  579. he took away

  580. the sodomites

  581. out of the land

  582. and removed

  583. all the idols

  584. that what

  585. his father

  586. had done what?

  587. Made.

  588. Remember his father

  589. was trying to blend

  590. all the worship together

  591. no matter what you worship

  592. you come together

  593. you know

  594. we see a lot of that spirit

  595. today do don't we?

  596. We can all get along

  597. just worship

  598. what you want to worship

  599. the problem is

  600. it doesn't work that way

  601. a society doesn't

  602. function that way

  603. and we're going to see this

  604. he removed his father's idols

  605. but also his grandmother's idols

  606. you know

  607. that's stepping it up a notch

  608. isn't it?

  609. Because we're going to find here

  610. what he did

  611. you know

  612. we find here

  613. that he removed

  614. those things

  615. he removed the

  616. high places

  617. that were before him

  618. and we're going to see here

  619. as we look through here

  620. in this passage

  621. that

  622. let's see here

  623. put a note in here

  624. that I wanted

  625. see if that's

  626. yep

  627. over to

  628. 1 Kings

  629. back to 1 Kings

    1 Kings 15 chapter mention

  630. chapter 15

  631. yep

  632. verse 13

  633. and also

  634. Micaiah and his mother

  635. which you remember

  636. this is

  637. his grandmother

  638. remember we talked about

  639. that last time

  640. about how they

  641. marked generations here

  642. it was his

  643. father's mother

  644. and even her

  645. he removed

  646. from being queen

  647. because she made

  648. an idol in a grove

  649. and Asa destroyed

  650. her idol

  651. and burnt it

  652. by the brook

  653. Kidron

  654. now

  655. this is important

  656. to see what's

  657. happening here

  658. he takes and puts

  659. that away

  660. he took that

  661. responsibility

  662. very seriously

  663. of what he would

  664. God would have

  665. for him

  666. and he took that

  667. responsibility out

  668. even under the

  669. public square

  670. because we find

  671. in 2nd Chronicles

  672. 14

  673. in verse 5

  674. he said

  675. he also took away

  676. out of this

  677. all the cities of Judah

  678. the high places

  679. and the images

  680. and the kingdom

  681. was quiet

  682. before him

  683. remember it said

  684. at the beginning

  685. that he had

  686. 10 years of quiet

  687. now we find out

  688. why that peace

  689. was in the kingdom

  690. it's attached

  691. to the decisions

  692. that Asa made

  693. the things that

  694. Asa made

  695. made a decision

  696. why?

  697. because he had

  698. the authority

  699. from his position

  700. to make those

  701. but he was

  702. following God

  703. first

  704. and trusting

  705. God in those

  706. things

  707. and he took

  708. out from the

  709. cities

  710. the places

  711. that drew

  712. people away

  713. from God

  714. you know

  715. he took away

  716. out of all

  717. the cities

  718. of Judah

  719. the high places

  720. and images

  721. what did he do?

  722. he says

  723. hey the things

  724. that are going

  725. to take people

  726. away from God

  727. I'm going to

  728. take away

  729. from them

  730. I'm going to

  731. destroy them

  732. I'm going to

  733. put them away

  734. that we might

  735. worship

  736. and focus

  737. upon God

  738. the one

  739. that we ought

  740. to

  741. he encouraged

  742. others to

  743. do so

  744. and it was

  745. not just

  746. a superficial

  747. change

  748. but a personal

  749. change

  750. that was

  751. needed

  752. notice back

  753. in 2nd

  754. chronicles

  755. chapter 14

  756. look at the

  757. verse before

  758. that in

  759. verse 4

  760. he says

  761. this

  762. he commanded

  763. Judah to

  764. seek the

  765. Lord God

  766. of their

  767. fathers

  768. and to

  769. do the

  770. law

  771. and the

  772. commandments

  773. remember

  774. if you're

  775. going to

  776. find God

  777. what do

  778. you got to

  779. do some

  780. seeking

  781. if you

  782. don't want

  783. to avoid

  784. evil

  785. you need

  786. to seek

  787. the Lord

  788. that was

  789. very clear

  790. with Rehoboam

  791. wasn't it

  792. they did

  793. evil in the

  794. eyes of the

  795. Lord

  796. because he

  797. didn't

  798. seek

  799. God

  800. first

  801. but what

  802. does

  803. Asa do

  804. he understands

  805. that he

  806. cannot make

  807. somebody else

  808. worship God

  809. but he

  810. said he

  811. commanded

  812. them to

  813. seek God

  814. to be

  815. aware of

  816. who God

  817. is and

  818. what God

  819. has done

  820. and why

  821. God is

  822. doing it

  823. because you

  824. cannot make

  825. somebody

  826. become a

  827. Christian

  828. the same

  829. is true

  830. here

  831. you can't

  832. force somebody

  833. to worship

  834. something

  835. you can

  836. make them

  837. go through

  838. the actions

  839. you know

  840. and some

  841. people go

  842. through the

  843. actions

  844. well this

  845. just makes

  846. life easier

  847. this makes

  848. life simpler

  849. if I just

  850. walk through

  851. and kind

  852. of blend

  853. in and

  854. move with

  855. the crowd

  856. of whatever

  857. direction

  858. it's going

  859. we need to

  860. realize we

  861. have to take

  862. a stand

  863. for what's

  864. right and

  865. to do

  866. what's

  867. right

  868. you know

  869. it's easy

  870. to fall

  871. into the

  872. idea of

  873. well if I

  874. just go

  875. with the

  876. crowd I

  877. can kind

  878. of do

  879. and nobody

  880. really notices

  881. but God

  882. tells us

  883. that we

  884. ought to

  885. take a

  886. stand

  887. just as

  888. Asa did

  889. and he

  890. did this

  891. very clearly

  892. it was just

  893. not a

  894. superficial

  895. change

  896. but a

  897. personal

  898. change

  899. that was

  900. needed

  901. in the

  902. people

  903. now we're

  904. going to

  905. talk just a

  906. little bit

  907. about

  908. something here

  909. because

  910. Asa

  911. made some

  912. decisions

  913. here in this

  914. passage that I

  915. know some

  916. will come up

  917. with

  918. look in

  919. 1st Kings

  920. chapter 15

  921. and verse 14

  922. what I'd

  923. encourage you

  924. to do

  925. as we go

  926. through this

  927. I encourage

  928. you to

  929. read through

  930. 1st Kings

  931. and read

  932. through

  933. Chronicles

  934. there

  935. and just

  936. kind of

  937. before we

  938. talk about

  939. it because

  940. you'll probably

  941. have some

  942. questions

  943. because it's

  944. interesting

  945. it says he

  946. removed all

  947. the high

  948. places out

  949. of the

  950. cities

  951. now look

  952. down here

  953. in verse

  954. 14

  955. it says

  956. but the

  957. high places

  958. were not

  959. removed

  960. you know

  961. some people

  962. oh

  963. oh

  964. the Bible

  965. I want you

  966. to understand

  967. the difference

  968. here

  969. it says he

  970. removed them

  971. out of the

  972. cities

  973. but in

  974. the

  975. countryside

  976. they were

  977. still

  978. present

  979. and you

  980. say why

  981. did he

  982. not remove

  983. the ones

  984. from the

  985. countryside

  986. because notice

  987. the next

  988. phrase there

  989. of what it

  990. says

  991. and it says

  992. nevertheless

  993. Asa's heart

  994. was perfect

  995. with the

  996. Lord all

  997. his days

  998. in other

  999. words he

  1000. had sought

  1001. the Lord

  1002. and his

  1003. heart was

  1004. at peace

  1005. with God

  1006. but yet

  1007. he still

  1008. allowed

  1009. the high

  1010. places

  1011. to be

  1012. out in

  1013. the areas

  1014. around

  1015. the cities

  1016. good question

  1017. you know

  1018. what the good

  1019. thing is

  1020. the Bible

  1021. gives us

  1022. an answer

  1023. why those

  1024. things

  1025. why would

  1026. Asa

  1027. allow them

  1028. well this

  1029. is where

  1030. sometimes

  1031. tradition

  1032. and what

  1033. others have

  1034. done before

  1035. you can

  1036. get you

  1037. in trouble

  1038. because he

  1039. was following

  1040. and allowing

  1041. something that

  1042. had been a

  1043. tradition

  1044. turn over to

  1045. first kings

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  1046. chapter 3

  1047. for a moment

  1048. because sometimes

  1049. people do

  1050. something and

  1051. have a make

  1052. a tradition

  1053. or make a

  1054. practice out

  1055. of something

  1056. that may be

  1057. practical for

  1058. the time of

  1059. where they

  1060. are or

  1061. what's happening

  1062. but it's not

  1063. a command of

  1064. God

  1065. and sometimes

  1066. we find

  1067. that what

  1068. we're doing

  1069. even in a

  1070. tradition

  1071. needs to

  1072. change

  1073. because it

  1074. doesn't line

  1075. up with the

  1076. word of

  1077. God

  1078. but why

  1079. would

  1080. Asa say

  1081. okay we're

  1082. going to leave

  1083. them in the

  1084. far reaches

  1085. of my

  1086. kingdom

  1087. and still

  1088. have his

  1089. right

  1090. it says

  1091. nevertheless

  1092. his heart

  1093. was perfect

  1094. before God

  1095. all his

  1096. days

  1097. how could

  1098. those two

  1099. things be

  1100. functioning

  1101. look what

  1102. happens here

  1103. in first

  1104. kings chapter

  1105. three what

  1106. happened

  1107. earlier

  1108. says only

  1109. the people

  1110. sacrificed in

  1111. high places

  1112. because there

  1113. was no house

  1114. built under

  1115. the name of

  1116. the Lord

  1117. unto those

  1118. days

  1119. in other

  1120. words what

  1121. were the

  1122. people doing

  1123. there was the

  1124. temple had

  1125. not been

  1126. established

  1127. in other

  1128. words this

  1129. practice began

  1130. sometimes this

  1131. while practices

  1132. begin well

  1133. intended in

  1134. other words a

  1135. place set aside

  1136. to sacrifice

  1137. or to give

  1138. praise unto

  1139. God or to

  1140. focus upon

  1141. God but

  1142. what had

  1143. happened is

  1144. people instead

  1145. of keeping it

  1146. just to focus

  1147. upon God

  1148. they started to

  1149. do the same

  1150. thing all the

  1151. other people

  1152. did why they

  1153. go to the

  1154. high places

  1155. to do this

  1156. because that's

  1157. what the

  1158. people in

  1159. the land

  1160. did now I

  1161. want you to

  1162. understand as

  1163. you see this

  1164. you're going to

  1165. find that God

  1166. didn't necessarily

  1167. have a problem

  1168. it's what the

  1169. people did with

  1170. it was the

  1171. problem but

  1172. Asa I believe

  1173. allowed this

  1174. because this is

  1175. what had been

  1176. a tradition

  1177. because notice

  1178. verse 3

  1179. it says

  1180. and Solomon

  1181. loved the

  1182. Lord walking

  1183. in the

  1184. statutes of

  1185. David his

  1186. father only

  1187. he sacrificed

  1188. and burnt

  1189. incense in

  1190. the high

  1191. places

  1192. Solomon had

  1193. a practice

  1194. of going

  1195. out to

  1196. the high

  1197. places upon

  1198. the hilltops

  1199. and giving

  1200. honor to

  1201. God at the

  1202. beginning of

  1203. his kingdom

  1204. before the

  1205. temple was

  1206. built because

  1207. remember David

  1208. never built

  1209. the temple

  1210. remember God

  1211. told him that

  1212. Solomon was going

  1213. to do it

  1214. and it

  1215. didn't just

  1216. have a

  1217. prefab

  1218. you know

  1219. they didn't

  1220. just move

  1221. it in one

  1222. day

  1223. you know

  1224. it took

  1225. years and

  1226. time processed

  1227. and so they

  1228. had a tradition

  1229. that they were

  1230. doing and I

  1231. think Asa left

  1232. those because he

  1233. wanted the people

  1234. to have a place

  1235. to do that

  1236. because of

  1237. tradition which

  1238. we get caught

  1239. up into pretty

  1240. easy don't we

  1241. but you know

  1242. what the problem

  1243. was is that he

  1244. left it for good

  1245. intention and

  1246. people would

  1247. continue to use

  1248. it for the wrong

  1249. thing use it to

  1250. worship the

  1251. false gods

  1252. look over to

  1253. Psalm 78 for a

  1254. moment because I

  1255. want you to

  1256. understand it's

  1257. not wrong to

  1258. worship God and

  1259. you can worship

  1260. God any place

  1261. I mean after all

  1262. everything every

  1263. place here is his

  1264. he's there he's

  1265. present but we

  1266. need to understand

  1267. God also gives us

  1268. direction for

  1269. purpose because not

  1270. for his sake but

  1271. for ours because

  1272. notice what

  1273. happened look down

  1274. verse 57 in Psalm

  1275. 78 it says but

  1276. turned back and

  1277. dealt unfaithfully like

  1278. their fathers they

  1279. were turned aside

  1280. like a deceitful

  1281. bow and they

  1282. provoked him to

  1283. anger with their

  1284. high places and

  1285. moved him to

  1286. jealousy with their

  1287. graven images when

  1288. God heard this he

  1289. was wroth and

  1290. greatly abhorred

  1291. Israel in other

  1292. words they took

  1293. something that was

  1294. a tradition that

  1295. somebody did in

  1296. honor of God and

  1297. took it and

  1298. superficially

  1299. placed it as a

  1300. higher priority or

  1301. higher substance and

  1302. then they started

  1303. blending other

  1304. things in with it

  1305. we can very easily

  1306. do the same thing

  1307. that's the reason we

  1308. always have to go

  1309. back and filter things

  1310. through the word of

  1311. God are those things

  1312. lining up with what

  1313. scripture says or has

  1314. it began good and

  1315. migrated because you

  1316. know as people we

  1317. have a tendency to

  1318. migrate off the

1319. chart don't we kind of

1320. go go astray just as

1321. the children of Israel we

  1322. can take something that

1323. was intended for good but

  1324. outside the parameters of

  1325. God's instructions can

  1326. cause yourself or

1327. others to sin we have

1328. to keep it within the

  1329. confines of what God

  1330. has instructed and what

1331. God has given us in God's

  1332. parameters in those

1333. things and so as we

  1334. understand this he

  1335. brought he's going to

1336. we're going to see how

  1337. Asa continues to bring

1338. those things and to put

  1339. those things together in

  1340. his kingdom as we're

  1341. going to continue on

  1342. here because we're out

  1343. of time here tonight

  1344. you're going to get to I

  1345. get a five minute

1346. reprieve so I get five

  1347. more extra minutes on

  1348. Sunday you know when

1349. that'd be nice you know

  1350. preacher gets to bank

1351. his time you know I

  1352. yield back but we're

1353. going to pick up here

  1354. in Asa's life but I

  1355. want you to understand

1356. that our time and our

  1357. purpose and our

  1358. connection with God needs

1359. to be personal it can't

  1360. be abstract if something

  1361. you got from somebody

1362. else it needs to be

  1363. yours in serving the

  1364. Lord let's pray

  1365. heavenly fathers we

  1366. come before you tonight

1367. Lord we just thank you
