  1. Mark chapter 13 this morning as we continue in our series here through the book of Mark.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  2. And we've seen last time as we concluded here at the end of chapter 12,

  3. we find that Jesus was in the temple and he had been teaching and been questioned.

  4. And they'd looked at those that had given offerings and he'd given an assessment of that.

  5. And after watching that assessment, we find that Jesus completed his time in the temple.

  6. And Jesus prepares to depart the temple for that last time.

  7. And of all the things that had taken place, it was clear that each one there that day had a choice that they had to make.

  8. You know, just like today, there's choices that we have to make concerning who Jesus is and his impact upon us.

  9. You know, and the Bible tells us that many believed on him but did not confess him.

  10. You know, I think we can see that a lot today in the world.

  11. As Jesus departs the temple of all the questions, all the things, all the revelation about who he is,

  12. there's still some that they recognize him, but they won't declare and confess him as their savior.

  13. And the Bible tells us that there in the gospel of John, John makes an interesting statement.

  14. He says, for they love the praise of men more than the praise of God.

  15. You know, and that's a lot of the struggle that we find.

  16. And even the disciples were faced with some of those challenges.

  17. And as we find here, this crowd from which Jesus departed as he made his way from the temple towards the Mount of Olives.

  18. We're going to get into what is called the Olivet Discourse this morning.

  19. You know, talking about as Jesus was giving some final encouragement to his disciples,

  20. but also talking about as the disciples' question about what is to come.

  21. You know, in times, what's ahead?

  22. Because Jesus had made some statements that caused them to begin to say,

  23. okay, Lord, how are these things going to come to be?

  24. You know, what and when?

  25. And how are these things going to look?

  26. What's going to come together along the way?

  27. And they began to question him about some of these things.

  28. And the discourse that follows records the events that reveal what's going to happen here upon the earth before the end of time.

  29. And so as we're going to look here this morning, there's questions that people ask even today.

  30. And it seems to captivate people because they're concerned about what's going to happen.

  31. You know, people are concerned about the future.

  32. They're concerned about, okay, if the Lord's going to come, when is he going to come?

  33. You know, what's going to take place?

  34. You know, and people are oftentimes today, just like they were in Jesus' day, they're worried about the signs.

  35. You know, how do I know?

  36. You know, how do I know if Jesus is coming?

  37. And to be prepared, you know, the reality is, as we're going to see today,

  38. you'd better be prepared because you don't know the day or the hour.

  39. Things that you need to be prepared for now and to be prepared for that because one day Jesus will come again.

  40. You know, that is a guarantee.

  41. Just as he came the first time, he will come again.

  42. But we're going to find here this morning the conversation between Jesus and his disciples was not only for them,

  43. but this conversation is even for us.

  44. Because we have those same type questions.

  45. You know, people will come up with those questions about what and when.

  46. And as we look at this this morning, I want you to keep that in mind as we look what's recorded,

  47. that we might know the events that characterize the end times.

  48. Because we're going to look at how Jesus lays this out

  49. and put those things in context here with the rest of Scripture.

  50. You know, because context is always important.

  51. And we're going to find here when it comes to discussing end times,

  52. people love to take things out of context.

  53. You know, and piecemeal things.

  54. And so let's take a look here this morning.

  55. If you found Mark chapter 13, let's stand together here for the reading of God's Word.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  56. We'll read down through verse 8 here this morning.

  57. And follow along, and it says this,

  58. And as he went out of the temple, one of the disciples saith unto him,

  59. Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here.

  60. And Jesus answering said unto him,

  61. Seest thou these great buildings?

  62. There shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.

  63. And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives over against the temple,

  64. Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

  65. Tell us, when shall these things be?

  66. And what shall be the signs when all these things shall be fulfilled?

  67. And Jesus answering them began to say,

  68. Take heed, lest any man deceive you.

  69. For many shall come in my name, saying,

  70. I am Christ, and shall deceive many.

  71. And when ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars,

  72. be ye not troubled.

  73. For such things must needs be.

  74. But the end shall not be yet.

  75. For nations shall rise against nation,

  76. kingdom against kingdom.

  77. And there shall be earthquakes in diverse places,

  78. and there shall be famines and troubles.

  79. These are the beginning of sorrows.

  80. Let's pray.

  81. Heavenly Father, as we come before you today, Lord,

  82. as we look at your encouragement to be prepared for those things that are to come, Lord,

  83. to be focused upon who you are and what you've done for us in the present, Lord,

  84. and the need to respond to it and to be ready for that.

  85. Lord, I pray you just help us to heed even the warning given today, Lord,

  86. that we might understand how these things fit together.

  87. And how they fit into your plan of the time that is going to be before us, Lord,

  88. of the future events.

  89. And as it's often referred to, Lord,

  90. we know it's the end of this world,

  91. but it's a beginning with you for eternity,

  92. for those who have called upon you.

  93. Lord, I pray that you just have your hand upon each one today, Lord.

  94. You know those that are yours.

  95. Lord, we pray just to challenge those that know you as Savior to be consistent in these things, Lord.

  96. But also today, Lord, we ask that there's one here that's not sure,

  97. that they would call upon you, Lord,

  98. that they might know that they have eternal life,

  99. that they're secure no matter what happens in this world around us.

  100. And Lord, we ask all these things in your precious name.

  101. Amen.

  102. May we be seated.

  103. You know, as we look here this morning,

  104. we see Jesus' disciples leaving the temple late on Tuesday afternoon.

  105. But not before Jesus makes a declaration about the city of Jerusalem and the temple

  106. because oftentimes in Scripture, sometimes like Mark chapter 13 seems kind of abrupt.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  107. You know, as we're looking and reading that, it seems like an abrupt conversation.

  108. Why would the disciples point that out?

  109. What was leading them up to it?

  110. Well, Matthew gives us a little insight.

  111. And we can go back to Matthew's account.

  112. If you look over to Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  113. because I believe the disciples here are responding to a statement that Jesus made.

  114. A statement that I declared in here.

  115. Notice what it tells us here in Matthew chapter 23 in verse 37.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  116. Here's Jesus looking over Jerusalem.

  117. And he says,

  118. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets and stonest them which are sent unto thee,

  119. how often would I have gathered thy children together,

  120. even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and she would not.

  121. You know, here's Jesus lamenting over the city of Jerusalem,

  122. over the Jewish people that he had given so much for.

  123. He had sent the prophets.

  124. They were possessors of all that God had commanded.

  125. I mean, God had given them and blessed them so much.

  126. But notice it says,

  127. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

  128. Why is it going to be desolate?

  129. That's what I think sparks the disciples' questions.

  130. Because remember, they're in the temple.

  131. They're seeing the splendor of the temple.

  132. The temple was the centerpiece of all that they'd been doing.

  133. All the worship, everything centered around the temple.

  134. That was the focal point.

  135. And Jesus says, I'm going to leave this here desolate.

  136. Empty.

  137. And we're going to see here, notice what it says, verse 39.

  138. For I say unto you,

  139. Ye shall not see me henceforth,

  140. till ye shall say,

  141. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

  142. Now, what is he referring to?

  143. He says, I'm not going to enter the temple again

  144. until that day I return.

  145. When people say,

  146. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

  147. And Zechariah the prophet declares,

  148. there's coming a day when Jesus is going to step down once again

  149. and enter into Jerusalem

  150. and enter into the temple.

  151. We're going to see here this dynamic that takes place.

  152. This is a picture that the disciples had in their mind.

  153. They're thinking,

  154. Jesus has already told us he's going to die.

  155. And, you know, we're already struggling with,

  156. okay, who's going to be in charge?

  157. You know, we looked at all those normal things,

  158. but now they're like another set of contemplation is,

  159. okay, when and where and how are these things going to happen?

  160. How is this going to, how are we going to know?

  161. But we see here this verse 38 sets the stage for this question.

  162. As they walk out the temple complex,

  163. because I want you to understand,

  164. the temple was a portion of this complex.

  165. The entire temple complex was a very large structure,

  166. even under Herod.

  167. And you see, if you can,

  168. they tell us that Herod had ornately remodeled

  169. Ezra's temple that he had built

  170. and he had expanded on it.

  171. And there was all these glories

  172. that had been added in this remodel

  173. of the gold that was hanging on all the doors.

  174. And they had big, white, large stones that were around it.

  175. Luke 21 tells us this.

  176. It says,

  177. Some spake of the temple how it was adorned

  178. with goodly stones and gifts.

  179. So what are the disciples looking at?

  180. As they're walking out,

  181. they're saying,

  182. Jesus, if you're going to leave this desolate,

  183. this building, this structure,

  184. this compound, if you might say,

  185. with all these ornate things

  186. and all the effort, all the energy,

  187. all the things that have gone into it,

  188. the beauty of the place

  189. that we come to worship the Lord.

  190. And the disciples are looking at it.

  191. That's what we find here

  192. in verse 1 of chapter 13.

  193. It says,

  194. Master, see what manner of stones

  195. and what buildings are here.

  196. You know?

  197. They're looking at the majesty of the building,

  198. the structure.

  199. You know, they're not like on people today.

  200. Oftentimes we get fascinated

  201. with structures and buildings

  202. and things,

  203. and we get attached to them.

  204. And since this was the place

  205. that they worshiped God,

  206. there was an attachment

  207. they had to all this happening.

  208. And Jesus then reveals something

  209. that would have startled the disciples.

  210. First he says he's going to leave it desolate,

  211. and he's not going to come again

  212. until he returns.

  213. And now Jesus makes a very bold statement

  214. about the destruction of it.

  215. We see this as an artist's rendition

  216. of what they think

  217. Herod's temple complex would have looked like.

  218. I mean, it's a very great structure,

  219. and here Jesus makes a statement.

  220. The destruction of the temple

  221. seemed contrary to everything they'd known.

  222. It had been the place of worship

  223. since David purchased the threshing floor

  224. from Orin

  225. as a place to offer sacrifices

  226. unto the Lord.

  227. Solomon later would build

  228. the first temple there

  229. after the death of his father David,

  230. only to find it was destroyed

  231. when Judah was taken away

  232. into captivity

  233. for 70 years

  234. there into Babylon.

  235. But we find Ezra returned

  236. with the mandate to rebuild,

  237. and this was the same temple

  238. that Ezra built 500 years before,

  239. but had been remodeled

  240. by Herod

  241. and made even more ornate

  242. and more of a bold statement

  243. about who God is

  244. and the place.

  245. He was trying to gain favor

  246. with the Jews.

  247. You know?

  248. You think the world is different today?

  249. You have a politician

  250. trying to bribe people

  251. with buildings and other things

  252. to try to gain their favor.

  253. I want to let you know

  254. there's nothing new today

  255. that goes on

  256. that didn't go on back then.

  257. The same things happen,

  258. and the same people get caught up

  259. in the same things,

  260. but we find here

  261. that as they were there

  262. leaving that temple complex,

  263. Jesus tells them

  264. that's what?

  265. It's going to be destroyed.

  266. He tells them

  267. that see this great complex?

  268. There's not even going to be

  269. a single stone left.

  270. Every stone

  271. is going to be taken down.

  272. And part of what we need

  273. to understand this morning

  274. is that what Jesus

  275. was really saying

  276. because the temple complex

  277. was fascinating to see.

  278. They say you could see it

  279. all over the place.

  280. You could see it

  281. as you entered the city.

  282. It sat up on the hill,

  283. and they tell us here

  284. that the stones

  285. that they were used in this,

  286. some of them were 40 feet long

  287. by 18 feet high

  288. by 15 feet wide.

  289. Precision cut

  290. to where you couldn't

  291. put a piece of paper

  292. between them.

  293. And Jesus is looking

  294. at his disciples

  295. and saying,

  296. hey guys,

  297. I know you're fascinated

  298. with this,

  299. but there's going to come a day

  300. there's not going to be

  301. one stone upon another.

  302. All this is going to be

  303. taken away.

  304. All the gold,

  305. all the things

  306. that Herod had done

  307. to remodel the temple

  308. to make it look

  309. as an amazing place

  310. to worship God.

  311. But we find here

  312. that we know from history

  313. that in 70 A.D.

  314. the temple was destroyed.

  315. They dismantled it completely,

  316. stripping it of gold

  317. and precious stones.

  318. Exactly what Jesus said

  319. was going to happen to it.

  320. Exactly how he had described it.

  321. But I do want to let you know

  322. there is going to be

  323. another temple built.

  324. You know?

  325. But as we study through,

  326. I want you to understand

  327. there's going to be

  328. sacrifices that resume

  329. during the time of what we call,

  330. the Bible calls

  331. the time of Jacob's trouble,

  332. also known as the tribulation.

  333. And then we're going to find

  334. there's going to be

  335. a temple built

  336. during the thousand year

  337. reign of Christ.

  338. We're going to see

  339. all these magnificent things.

  340. But as they're departing

  341. out of the temple,

  342. Jesus tells them

  343. there's going to be

  344. a destruction of the temple.

  345. And I'm not going to

  346. enter in again

  347. until the time I come

  348. in power and in glory.

  349. So the disciples are trying

  350. to process all this information.

  351. They're trying to put

  352. all the pieces together

  353. to understand those things.

  354. When he says,

  355. okay, if Jesus is leaving

  356. and the temple's going

  357. to be destroyed,

  358. but he's not going to do this again

  359. or enter in

  360. until we find

  361. that he is coming

  362. in his power and glory.

  363. You know,

  364. when blessed is he

  365. that cometh in the name

  366. of the Lord

  367. when they receive him

  368. as their king.

  369. They're trying to put

  370. this timeline together

  371. in their head.

  372. You know,

  373. it's not unlike people today.

  374. You know,

  375. when people start studying

  376. the end,

  377. they're trying to put,

  378. okay, it says this here

  379. and that over here

  380. and this over here

  381. and this over here.

  382. And okay,

  383. how does that fit together?

  384. How's this puzzle come together

  385. to paint the picture

  386. that God has?

  387. To reveal what God has in store.

  388. The disciples were trying

  389. to figure this out.

  390. They're trying to discern,

  391. okay,

  392. if this was going to happen,

  393. how and when was it going to happen?

  394. Because notice their discernment

  395. that Jesus is going to give.

  396. But look at verse 3 there

  397. in verse 13.

  398. And it says,

  399. and he sat upon the Mount of Olives

  400. over against the temple.

  401. Now, I want you to get this picture

  402. because here is Jesus.

  403. They've left the temple complex.

  404. They've went through the city

  405. and they went up

  406. on the Mount of Olives,

  407. very likely to the very,

  408. close to the place

  409. that he would soon

  410. to be arrested

  411. because Judas told them

  412. where to find Jesus

  413. because it's a place

  414. he went off in.

  415. So I think this is probably

  416. the same place

  417. that they could oversee

  418. the city

  419. and oversee the temple.

  420. And they're sitting there

  421. and it just tells us

  422. they were there

  423. and they were having

  424. another discussion

  425. about things.

  426. And it tells us

  427. that the two pairs of brothers

  428. show up again, you know.

  429. Peter and Andrew

  430. and James and John.

  431. And we find that they sit down

  432. with Jesus privately

  433. and say,

  434. Jesus, what about this?

  435. Because notice what they ask him.

  436. Notice what they say.

  437. Tell us in verse 4,

  438. when shall these things be

  439. and what shall be the sign

  440. when all these things

  441. shall be fulfilled?

  442. Now as we see here,

  443. Jesus is telling them,

  444. had described these things,

  445. this catastrophe

  446. that was going to happen

  447. with the temple.

  448. And he says,

  449. when are these things

  450. going to happen?

  451. You know,

  452. Matthew chapter 24

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  453. also records for us this.

  454. It says,

  455. and he sat upon the Mount of Olives

  456. and the disciples

  457. came to him privately saying,

  458. tell us when these things shall be

  459. and what shall be

  460. the sign of thy coming

  461. and of the end of the world.

  462. They were worried about,

  463. okay, how is this

  464. going to come to fruition?

  465. What's this going to look like?

  466. They were looking

  467. for signs of his coming

  468. and the end of the world.

  469. The establishment of the kingdom

  470. was paramount to the disciples.

  471. You know,

  472. one thing we always

  473. got to keep in mind

  474. is that we're looking

  475. at this passage.

  476. You have to look at it

  477. through a Jewish lens

  478. of what they understood

  479. and what they knew.

  480. Their focus was,

  481. hey, one day

  482. there's going to be a kingdom

  483. that our Savior

  484. is going to rule

  485. and reign

  486. and we're going to be free

  487. from all those

  488. that have oppressed us.

  489. That was their mindset,

  490. their vision.

  491. That's what they

  492. had come to understand.

  493. And we're going to see

  494. as Jesus begins

  495. to broaden

  496. their perspective

  497. to understand

  498. the big picture

  499. of what God is doing.

  500. The establishment

  501. of the kingdom

  502. was just that.

  503. It was paramount to them.

  504. When is this going to happen?

  505. Even right before

  506. he was taken to heaven,

  507. you know,

  508. Jesus has died

  509. and arose again

  510. and he's getting ready

  511. to go up into heaven.

  512. Think about the disciples'

  513. last question.

  514. If you don't think

  515. this is on their mind,

  516. Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  517. Jesus is getting ready

  518. to depart from them

  519. and notice they're still

  520. asking this same question.

  521. It says,

  522. when they therefore

  523. were come together,

  524. they asked of him,

  525. saying,

  526. Lord,

  527. wilt thou at this time

  528. restore again

  529. the kingdom to Israel?

  530. You know?

  531. I mean,

  532. this is something

  533. that was stuck

  534. in their mind.

  535. I mean,

  536. this is something

  537. that weighed upon them

  538. to say,

  539. how is this going to fit?

  540. They were still trying

  541. to make sense of it.

  542. Now,

  543. us today,

  544. as we have a completed

  545. canon of Scripture,

  546. we can look at it

  547. and say,

  548. well,

  549. what did they miss?

  550. But I want you to understand,

  551. they were operating

  552. with what they understood,

  553. with the information

  554. that they had.

  555. Now,

  556. we often have

  557. the same problem,

  558. don't we?

  559. We make decisions sometimes

  560. or get caught up

  561. into things

  562. based on the information

  563. we have

  564. and not all the information.

  565. We can say

  566. we are blessed

  567. because we have

  568. all the information

  569. we need

  570. in a completed

  571. Word of God.

  572. God's complete

  573. revelation to us.

  574. We live in a

  575. blessed generation.

  576. that we have that.

  577. So I want you to understand

  578. when the disciples

  579. are asking this,

  580. you need to remember

  581. where they were

  582. and what was happening

  583. and how their mindset

  584. had been focused

  585. and positioned

  586. in their thought processes.

  587. Because as believers,

  588. sometimes,

  589. if we're not careful,

  590. we can end up

  591. the same way

  592. as the disciples.

  593. We get caught up

  594. in something

  595. and don't look

  596. for the information

  597. that God's given us.

  598. To put things

  599. in perspective

  600. because notice

  601. Jesus' response

  602. there in Acts

  603. and he said unto them,

  604. it is not for you

  605. to know the times

  606. or the seasons

  607. which the Father

  608. hath put in his own power.

  609. You know,

  610. I want to give you

  611. a little heads up.

  612. Anybody that says

  613. Jesus is going to return

  614. right now,

  615. you can put a mark

  616. through them.

  617. You know,

  618. I won't ask for a show

  619. of hands,

  620. but how many have heard

  621. people make declarations

  622. like that?

  623. You can look at history.

  624. History's filled with it.

  625. The one thing

  626. I can tell you,

  627. if somebody says

  628. Jesus is going to return

  629. on this date,

  630. you can put a mark

  631. through them

  632. and say you're a liar

  633. because Jesus made it clear

  634. you don't know.

  635. You've just identified yourself

  636. as somebody

  637. contrary to Scripture.

  638. But you know what?

  639. Oftentimes they get

  640. caught up in it

  641. because notice here

  642. what Jesus responds

  643. to them in this

  644. because Jesus,

  645. look at verse 5

  646. of chapter 13

  647. there in our text.

  648. It says,

  649. Jesus answering them

  650. began to say,

  651. take heed

  652. lest any man what?

  653. Deceive you.

  654. He said,

  655. you guys need

  656. to use some discernment.

  657. You need to be discerning

  658. in processing all this.

  659. Don't go by how you feel

  660. or how smooth

  661. somebody's words are.

  662. He says,

  663. take heed

  664. lest any man deceive you.

  665. There's going to be

  666. deceivers out there.

  667. This world is filled

  668. with deceivers.

  669. When it comes to

  670. those things,

  671. there will be people

  672. that come to you

  673. that will try to deceive

  674. and we need to be discerning

  675. about that.

  676. Jesus warns them

  677. they need to be aware

  678. of the deceivers,

  679. that the disciples

  680. could be drawn away

  681. by the things

  682. that they might see

  683. and hear.

  684. Think about the potential

  685. we have today.

  686. If they could be deceived

  687. with Jesus giving them

  688. direct information,

  689. how much more

  690. in danger are we today?

  691. To be paying attention,

  692. to take the full counsel

  693. of God's word

  694. to put those things together?

  695. What will be the part

  696. of the deception?

  697. Is that,

  698. notice what he tells them,

  699. for many shall come

  700. in my name,

  701. saying,

  702. I am Christ

  703. and shall deceive many.

  704. You know,

  705. over the years

  706. there's many who have said

  707. they've come

  708. in the name of the Lord.

  709. We even have people

  710. that declare themselves

  711. to be the Messiah,

  712. be the deliverer.

  713. You know,

  714. I don't have time

  715. to go through

  716. all the list

  717. of individuals,

  718. but sometimes we think,

  719. well,

  720. that was a future thing.

  721. Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  722. reveals something

  723. very interesting

  724. because when they're

  725. assessing the apostles

  726. after Christ's resurrection

  727. and the early church,

  728. you'll find there

  729. in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  730. in verses 36 and 37,

  731. we won't go there,

  732. but it makes mention

  733. of two individuals,

  734. Thaddeus and Judas of Galilee,

  735. both whose movements

  736. came to nothing

  737. and were dispersed.

  738. These were individuals

  739. that said,

  740. hey,

  741. we're the Messiah,

  742. follow me.

  743. And these were

  744. in the very same time frame

  745. that Jesus walked the earth.

  746. Even while he was present,

  747. there was deceivers out there.

  748. And some people fell into it.

  749. It's a reality.

  750. There are those

  751. that came a few years

  752. after Jesus

  753. and down through the ages.

  754. You know,

  755. some of you here

  756. have been around long enough

  757. to know names

  758. like Sung Moon,

  759. Moon,

  760. you know,

  761. that crazy Korean guy

  762. that declared himself

  763. the Messiah.

  764. Now,

  765. some of you

  766. have been around long enough

  767. to know a name

  768. by Jim Jones.

  769. He was another one

  770. that declared,

  771. I mean,

  772. the list could,

  773. I mean,

  774. you look up history

  775. and the list

  776. just keeps compiling.

  777. It's amazing

  778. the list of people

  779. throughout the ages

  780. who have declared

  781. to say,

  782. I come in the name

  783. of the Lord.

  784. I'm the Messiah.

  785. I'm the Deliverer.

  786. And many were deceived.

  787. Why?

  788. Because they didn't

  789. pay attention

  790. to what Jesus

  791. had to say.

  792. As the end approaches,

  793. there's going to be

  794. more and more

  795. put forth to claim.

  796. You know,

  797. we've always got to be careful

  798. not to be deceived

  799. by eloquent speech

  800. and smooth demeanors

  801. that people have.

  802. Because no matter

  803. who a person is,

  804. you better judge them

  805. by the book.

  806. Judge what they say

  807. by the Word of God.

  808. Does it line up

  809. to be paying attention

  810. to those things?

  811. It tells us here

  812. we're going to have wars

  813. and rumors of wars.

  814. You know,

  815. the world in which we live

  816. has experienced

  817. more times of war

  818. than at peace.

  819. You know,

  820. think about how many

  821. conflicts exist

  822. even in our lifetime.

  823. I mean,

  824. we have an entire generation

  825. that is growing up

  826. in conflict.

  827. Since 2001 forward,

  828. there's been a conflict

  829. happening.

  830. There was conflicts

  831. before that.

  832. I mean,

  833. you'll find there's wars

  834. and rumors of wars.

  835. Even in our lifetime

  836. and in times to pass,

  837. there's going to be

  838. more coming.

  839. You know,

  840. what it reveals

  841. is something very simple

  842. is that instead

  843. of becoming better,

  844. the world just continues

  845. to rage wars

  846. against one another.

  847. You know,

  848. we find all sorts

  849. of organizations

  850. that people found

  851. and other things contrary

  852. and try to say,

  853. we're going to make people

  854. better and better.

  855. You know,

  856. if you understand

  857. the Word of God,

  858. this world's not going

  859. to get better and better

  860. before Christ returns.

  861. It's going to get worse

  862. and worse.

  863. Why?

  864. Because sinful people

  865. do sinful things.

  866. Wicked people

  867. do wicked things.

  868. Our heart is deceitful

  869. because I want you

  870. to see here

  871. what Jesus makes

  872. a statement here.

  873. Look at the end

  874. of verse 7.

  875. It says,

  876. for such things

  877. must needs be,

  878. but the end

  879. shall not be yet.

  880. You know,

  881. Jesus is making

  882. an obvious statement here

  883. that I think we need

  884. to pay attention to

  885. because they're not

  886. to trouble us

  887. or to cause alarm

  888. because the end

  889. is,

  890. they don't mark

  891. the end.

  892. Jesus is admonishing

  893. His disciples.

  894. He's admonishing us today.

  895. Don't get caught up

  896. in the news cycle.

  897. Just in my lifetime,

  898. it's amazing

  899. how many people,

  900. every time something

  901. happens in the middle,

  902. oh, the end is here.

  903. I mean,

  904. every time you have something,

  905. oh, the tribulation

  906. has begun.

  907. Just remember

  908. Jesus' statement,

  909. but the end is not yet

  910. because the one thing

  911. you'll know

  912. is that when Jesus

  913. tells us what's going

  914. to happen,

  915. it's going to be clear.

  916. You won't have to ask,

  917. is this?

  918. It'll be,

  919. it is.

  920. But oftentimes,

  921. we get caught up

  922. in that every time

  923. something sparks up

  924. and moves forward.

  925. I want you to understand

  926. that they're wrong

  927. by declaring,

  928. hey, this is what it is.

  929. You know,

  930. we should be paying attention

  931. to world events,

  932. but we need to understand

  933. they don't direct

  934. the sign of the end

  935. nor His coming

  936. by themselves

  937. because God also

  938. gives us an order

  939. of what things

  940. are going to take place.

  941. You know,

  942. it's amazing

  943. how many people

  944. when something happens

  945. like this,

  946. there's a war someplace

  947. and they'll pull

  948. some verse out

  949. of Revelation

  950. that has to do

  951. with maybe close

  952. to the area

  953. that it might be in.

  954. Oh, this is happening

  955. and my question is

  956. what happened

  957. to all the stuff

  958. that came before it?

  959. If the rest didn't fit,

  960. if this doesn't fit

  961. after in the right order

  962. that God said,

  963. you know what,

  964. I can guarantee

  965. it's not it.

  966. You've got to follow

  967. the Word of God

  968. to follow those things.

  969. Notice what he says,

  970. there's going to be earthquakes

  971. and natural catastrophes,

  972. earthquakes,

  973. floods,

  974. hurricanes,

  975. volcanic eruptions,

  976. droughts,

  977. tsunamis,

  978. all these are going

  979. to occur for the result

  980. of a fallen world

  981. in which we live.

  982. Those things just happen.

  983. You know,

  984. we live in a generation,

  985. they try to make excuses

  986. to say men cause it,

  987. but I tell you what,

  988. that's a pretty arrogant statement.

  989. It amazes me

  990. how arrogant people are

  991. when they consider

  992. we can control our world.

  993. I want you to understand

  994. there's only one

  995. in control of this world.

  996. And the Bible tells us

  997. that it's by him

  998. all things consist.

  999. He is the one

  1000. over all things.

  1001. He's the creator.

  1002. He is the one

  1003. that designed

  1004. and put together.

  1005. He knows exactly

  1006. how it operates.

  1007. When these things happen,

  1008. they're not signs

  1009. of the end

  1010. by themselves.

  1011. There's going to be

  1012. famines and troubles.

  1013. You know,

1014. we see in the world

  1015. there's starvation

  1016. from famines.

  1017. They're going to occur.

1018. I want you to understand

  1019. it doesn't mean

  1020. we shouldn't help,

  1021. but these things

  1022. are going to happen.

  1023. Jesus says

  1024. these things must be.

  1025. They're going to be.

  1026. This is the way

  1027. it's going to be.

  1028. We find troubles.

  1029. Troubles in Matthew

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  1030. chapter 24

  1031. refers to them

  1032. as a pestilence,

  1033. a disease,

  1034. or plagues.

  1035. You know,

  1036. don't be disturbed.

  1037. Jesus said

1038. it was going to happen.

  1039. You know,

  1040. a few years ago

  1041. when COVID came through,

  1042. people went ballistic.

  1043. Oh, you know,

  1044. the end,

  1045. all this stuff.

  1046. People start,

1047. I want you to understand

1048. it's stuff we have to endure,

  1049. things we go through,

  1050. but Jesus said,

  1051. hey,

  1052. it's going to be.

  1053. Those same things

  1054. that happened

  1055. throughout history,

  1056. we don't get

  1057. exempt cards from.

1058. Our day is going to

  1059. have the same problems.

  1060. You know,

  1061. it's not hard

  1062. to find the

  1063. end is near crowd

1064. that's trying to base it

  1065. off these things.

1066. I want you to understand,

  1067. I believe Jesus

1068. can return at any time.

1069. We need to be prepared

  1070. for His return,

1071. but I want you to understand

  1072. we should not live

  1073. our daily life

  1074. only thinking,

1075. because we have to think

  1076. Jesus tells us

1077. that we need to be ready,

  1078. but we also need

  1079. to be living.

  1080. He says,

  1081. you'll know

  1082. when the time is.

  1083. You know,

  1084. we understand it

  1085. as an attempt

  1086. to twist Scripture

  1087. out of context

  1088. in order to reinforce

  1089. their error.

  1090. Jesus declares

  1091. that these things

  1092. are just the beginning

  1093. of sorrows.

  1094. Now,

1095. I want you to see here

  1096. the declaration

  1097. that Jesus makes here,

  1098. because Jesus says

  1099. these are the beginning

  1100. of sorrows.

  1101. Now,

  1102. this term beginning

  1103. of sorrows,

  1104. this declaration

  1105. that Jesus makes

  1106. to the disciples,

  1107. you cannot judge

  1108. the end

  1109. by the things

  1110. happening solely

  1111. around us,

  1112. as they're just

  1113. the beginning

  1114. of sorrows.

  1115. this word sorrows

  1116. refers to birth pains.

  1117. Okay?

  1118. Now,

1119. all the moms in here

  1120. can probably understand

  1121. this phrase,

  1122. this context

  1123. in reality,

  1124. but when a woman

  1125. gets ready

  1126. to have a child,

  1127. they'll begin

  1128. having pains

  1129. right before it delivers,

  1130. and you know,

  1131. they're thinking,

  1132. oh,

  1133. this is pretty bad.

  1134. Then they realize

1135. by the time they get

1136. in the middle of it,

1137. it gets a lot worse.

  1138. The beginning

  1139. is just that.

  1140. There are some pains

  1141. involved,

  1142. but they're nothing

  1143. in context

  1144. to what it is

  1145. in the actual

  1146. giving of birth.

  1147. This is the same

  1148. picture Jesus

  1149. uses here.

  1150. He says,

  1151. all these things

  1152. are the beginning

  1153. of sorrows.

  1154. They're like those

  1155. initial contractions

  1156. that a lady has

  1157. when she gets ready

  1158. to give birth.

  1159. You know,

  1160. they're like,

  1161. oh,

  1162. you know,

  1163. I've been around

  1164. a few ladies

  1165. that have given birth.

  1166. You know,

  1167. most of them,

  1168. they, you know,

  1169. at the beginning

  1170. it's just like,

  1171. oh,

  1172. you know,

  1173. then by the end

  1174. it's a whole different song.

1175. We'll just leave it there.

  1176. Amen?

  1177. But that's what Jesus

  1178. is giving

  1179. as an illustration

  1180. here to help us

  1181. understand.

  1182. Because the beginning

  1183. of those things

  1184. is not the actual.

  1185. The actual

  1186. is way different.

  1187. To understand

  1188. those things,

  1189. you can't judge

  1190. the end

  1191. by those things

  1192. that are just happening.

  1193. The pains

  1194. at the beginning

  1195. are not even close

  1196. to the intensity

  1197. of actual birth,

  1198. and we know

1199. it's going to be soon,

1200. but we don't know when.

  1201. Jesus wanted

  1202. His disciples

  1203. and everyone else

  1204. to know

  1205. that yes,

  1206. He will return

  1207. one day

  1208. in power

  1209. and in glory.

  1210. Notice what

  1211. Jesus tells them here.

  1212. He says,

  1213. these are the beginning

  1214. of sorrows,

  1215. but He's speaking here

  1216. about when He's going

  1217. to return.

  1218. Remember,

1219. that was the initial question.

1220. That was what was leading

  1221. up to these things,

1222. and I want you to know

  1223. today as we begin

  1224. looking at this passage

1225. that Jesus is coming back.

  1226. John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

1227. Jesus makes it very clear

  1228. to His disciples.

  1229. Remember what He says,

  1230. let not your heart

  1231. be troubled.

  1232. You know,

1233. isn't that some good news

  1234. for today?

  1235. Don't be troubled

  1236. over all these things.

  1237. Don't be troubled

  1238. of all the things,

  1239. the catastrophes

  1240. and other things.

  1241. That word troubled

1242. means to be worked up

  1243. or upset

1244. or to be dominated by.

  1245. Remember,

  1246. Jesus said

  1247. these things need

  1248. to be so.

  1249. He says,

  1250. let not your heart

  1251. be troubled.

  1252. You believe in God,

  1253. believe also in me.

  1254. In my Father's house

  1255. are many mansions.

1256. If it were not so,

1257. I would have told you.

  1258. I go to prepare

  1259. a place for you.

  1260. Now notice verse 3,

  1261. it says,

  1262. and if I go

  1263. and prepare a place

  1264. for you,

  1265. I will do what?

  1266. Come again

  1267. and receive you what?

  1268. Unto myself,

  1269. that where I am,

1270. there ye may be also.

  1271. Jesus is coming again.

  1272. You can rest assured,

  1273. it's clear He's coming.

  1274. But as we're going

  1275. to find here

1276. as we look at this passage,

  1277. as we continue

1278. in the weeks to come,

  1279. we don't know

1280. the day or the hour.

  1281. We don't have

  1282. a set time frame

1283. to be able to say

  1284. this is it.

  1285. You know,

1286. we need to be looking

  1287. for Him

  1288. to understand

1289. what we need to do.

  1290. Turn back over

  1291. to Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1292. for a moment.

  1293. Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1294. Here Jesus

  1295. has answered

  1296. the disciples,

  1297. you know,

  1298. you don't know

1299. the time or the hour

  1300. and He tells us

  1301. that you're going

  1302. to be witnesses

  1303. into the whole world

  1304. and that Jesus

  1305. gets caught up

  1306. into the cloud

  1307. and the disciples

  1308. are standing there

  1309. with their jaws open.

  1310. Now,

  1311. you say,

  1312. how do you know

1313. they had their jaws open?

  1314. Because the Bible says

  1315. they stood there

  1316. gazing into heaven.

  1317. I think I would probably

  1318. have the same response

  1319. right there.

  1320. If you were talking

  1321. to Jesus

  1322. and suddenly He just

1323. parted up into the clouds,

  1324. you'd be going,

  1325. normal response.

  1326. apostles were just

1327. people like you and I.

  1328. They're looking at Jesus

1329. go up into the clouds

  1330. and notice here

  1331. in Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1:11

  1332. verse 11,

  1333. which also said,

  1334. ye men of Galilee,

  1335. why stand ye

  1336. gazing up into heaven?

  1337. This same Jesus

  1338. which is taken up

  1339. from you into heaven

  1340. shall so come

  1341. in like manner

  1342. as you've seen Him

  1343. go into heaven.

1344. I want you to know

1345. that Jesus is coming again.

  1346. There's coming a day

  1347. He's going to come

1348. and He's going to come

  1349. first for His people.

  1350. You know,

  1351. Paul writing under

  1352. the guidance

  1353. of the Holy Spirit,

  1354. he reveals a mystery

  1355. that those that believe

  1356. one day are going

  1357. to be caught up

  1358. to be with Him.

  1359. You know,

  1360. this catching up,

  1361. we often use

  1362. that term rapture.

  1363. That's what that term

  1364. refers to

  1365. as the idea

  1366. of being caught up.

  1367. And he makes it

  1368. very clear,

  1369. 1 Thessalonians 4,

  1370. he says this,

  1371. for the Lord Himself

  1372. shall descend from heaven

  1373. with a shout,

  1374. with the voice

  1375. of the archangel,

1376. with the trump of God.

1377. And the dead in Christ

  1378. shall rise first

1379. when we which are alive

  1380. and remain

  1381. shall be caught up

  1382. together with Him

  1383. in the clouds

  1384. to meet the Lord

  1385. in the air

1386. and so shall we ever

  1387. be with the Lord.

  1388. Wherefore,

  1389. notice this,

  1390. comfort one another

  1391. with these words.

  1392. You know,

  1393. one of the things

1394. we can keep in mind

  1395. that helps give us

  1396. comfort as believers

1397. is Jesus is coming again.

1398. He's coming for His own.

  1399. To take us out

1400. out of this fallen world.

  1401. We know He's coming

  1402. for the saints

  1403. and also return

  1404. in majesty and power

  1405. to establish His kingdom.

1406. But He doesn't want us

  1407. to be distracted

  1408. by His coming.

1409. He wants us to be ready for it.

1410. Because it's going to happen

  1411. when it happens.

1412. I want you to know

  1413. that it's important

  1414. to be ready

  1415. when He does come.

  1416. Because if you're not

  1417. a believer today,

  1418. the things that Jesus

  1419. mentions in these verses

  1420. to come

  1421. could very well

  1422. come upon you.

  1423. There's coming a time

  1424. of the Bible refers

  1425. to as tribulation.

  1426. The question is,

1427. are you going to be in it?

1428. Or are you going to be above it?

  1429. Because Jesus says

1430. He's going to take us out.

  1431. To be with Him.

  1432. We're not appointed

  1433. under wrath.

  1434. And we know

1435. He's coming for the saints.

  1436. And you know,

  1437. if you're not a believer today,

1438. these things ought to serve

  1439. as a wake-up call for you.

  1440. Because the fact is,

  1441. Jesus is coming.

1442. The world is going to

  1443. go into a time

  1444. of terrible tribulations.

  1445. Billions will die

  1446. due to war

  1447. and disease

  1448. and starvation

  1449. and other plagues.

  1450. And the only way

1451. to guarantee you miss it

  1452. is to have

  1453. accepted Christ

  1454. as your Savior.

1455. That's how you miss it.

  1456. When people are ready

  1457. for the Lord's return

  1458. when He's coming

  1459. for His people.

  1460. You know,

1461. today we need to be ready

  1462. because Jesus

  1463. is even telling

  1464. His disciples

  1465. as we continue

  1466. looking in this passage,

  1467. be ready,

  1468. but occupy

  1469. until He comes.

  1470. To be working

  1471. for the Lord.

  1472. Today,

  1473. if you've never

  1474. trusted Christ

1475. as your Lord and Savior,

  1476. I challenge you

  1477. to consider

  1478. being prepared.

  1479. And that takes

  1480. recognizing your sin

  1481. and your pride

1482. and to come to Jesus

  1483. in humility

  1484. and believe

  1485. the gospel

  1486. because He died

  1487. for your sin

  1488. and mine.

  1489. And it's for whoever

  1490. will call upon Him.

  1491. You're the one

  1492. that makes the decision

  1493. of what you're going

  1494. to do

  1495. with Jesus.

  1496. As heads are bowed

  1497. and eyes are closed

  1498. this morning,

  1499. are you ready

  1500. for the Lord's return?

  1501. Are you ready?

  1502. If you're not sure

  1503. that you're ready,

  1504. today would be

  1505. the best day

  1506. in the world

  1507. to get ready.

  1508. We can have somebody

1509. show you from God's Word

  1510. how you can know,

1511. not just guess or hope,

  1512. but to know

  1513. that you have

  1514. eternal life

  1515. from the promises

  1516. of God.

  1517. What about you

  1518. today, Christian?

  1519. Are you living

  1520. in light

  1521. of His return?

  1522. What about you

  1523. today?

  1524. Is the Lord

  1525. speaking to you?

  1526. Is there a need

  1527. that God has revealed

  1528. to you,

  1529. decision or direction?

  1530. If that be you,

  1531. I encourage you

  1532. to be with Him.

  1533. Pray today.

  1534. Call upon Him.

  1535. Heavenly Father,

  1536. as we conclude

  1537. this service here today,

  1538. Lord, we pray

1539. just to have your hand

  1540. upon each heart,

  1541. each life.

  1542. Lord, you know

  1543. we might be able

1544. to put on a good front

  1545. for others,

  1546. but Lord, you know

1547. the heart of every individual.

  1548. Lord, I pray

  1549. just to work mightily

  1550. your spirit

  1551. would just convict

  1552. and convince.

  1553. Lord, you know

1554. the need of each one.

  1555. Lord, maybe it's

  1556. some encouragement

  1557. that's needed.

  1558. Knowing that we

  1559. can trust you

  1560. and that Lord,

  1561. you're above all

1562. the woes of this world.

  1563. Lord, I pray

1564. just to have your way

  1565. in each heart

  1566. and life here today.

  1567. And let's give you

  1568. all the praise

  1569. in Jesus' name.

  1570. As the piano plays,

  1571. what about you?
