  1. as we get started on our last Sunday school of 2024.

  2. You know, and another year is going to be completed shortly,

  3. and you get the anticipation of that new one

  4. that's coming around the corner.

  5. I mean, it's one of those elements we have to have the break from that,

  6. but, you know, some people, when they look at the new year,

  7. they're either excited or they're not looking forward to it.

  8. But, you know, as a believer, I want to encourage you with this good news.

  9. Is the beginning of a new year means we're one year closer to the Lord's return.

  10. And we'll be out of here and not have to deal with this mess called this world.

  11. And so that's the good news of this, that we're going to celebrate.

  12. You know, but as we celebrated Christmas and last week reflected upon his first coming,

  13. it's best that we don't forget that each passing year,

  14. we ought to reflect on the fact this could be the year.

  15. You know, oftentimes one of the Jewish traditions is next year in Jerusalem.

  16. As a believer, it ought to be next year in glory.

  17. You know, I was thinking about that this week.

  18. I'm like, that's a good thought, you know, next year in glory.

  19. You know, that's something we ought to look forward to.

  20. That we can look forward to what God has done.

  21. And every generation of believers has thought they would be the one that would see Jesus come again.

  22. And that's the way Jesus made it.

  23. And he wanted us to be ready.

  24. You know, we just talked about that.

  25. But to be ready for it.

  26. And so this morning we're going to continue looking over in Luke chapter 2 this morning.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  27. We're going to talk about a couple of other individuals here in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  28. Because we find two people here that were looking for Jesus.

  29. They were looking for the Lord.

  30. They had lived their lives looking for the Lord to come.

  31. You know, they were present at Jesus' first coming.

  32. And they were confident that they would live to see the Messiah.

  33. They had been watching and faithfully serving God with the expectation

  34. that the Lord's Christ would soon be on the scene.

  35. Their hopes were realized one day as they were serving in the temple.

  36. Everything they had looked forward to.

  37. Everything that God had promised to that point.

  38. They had the opportunity to witness.

  39. And we're going to talk about two individuals here this morning.

  40. That they had a hope of this.

  41. And their hopes were realized when one day in the temple,

  42. a young couple came with a new baby boy.

  43. And this is what we're going to pick up here in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  44. Luke chapter 2 is Jesus coming into the temple.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  45. And we need to keep in mind this morning that we ought to be optimistic about His coming again,

  46. just as these two were optimistic and looking for the Savior to come.

  47. And so we see here, just as those here in the first century, we can anticipate it also.

  48. Let's look here in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  49. Look down at verse 22 this morning.

  50. Luke chapter 2 and verse 22 says this,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  51. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished,

  52. they brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

  53. As is written in the law,

  54. The Lord every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,

  55. to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord,

  56. a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.

  57. And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.

  58. And the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  59. And the Holy Ghost was upon him.

  60. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  61. And he came by the Spirit into the temple.

  62. And when the parents brought the child Jesus to do for him after the custom of the law,

  63. they took him up.

  64. Then he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

  65. Lord, thou lettest thy servant depart in peace according to thy word.

  66. For my eyes have seen thy salvation,

  67. which thou hast prepared before the face of all people,

  68. a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel.

  69. And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him.

  70. And Simeon blessed them and said unto Mary his mother,

  71. Behold, this child is set for the fallen rising against many in Israel,

  72. and for a sign which shall be spoken against.

  73. Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,

  74. that the thoughts of thy heart may be revealed.

  75. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, a daughter of Phanel,

  76. of the daughter of the tribe of Asher.

  77. She was of great age and had lived with a husband 70 years from her virginity.

  78. And she was a widow of about four score and four years,

  79. which departed not from the temple,

  80. but served God with fasting and prayers night and day.

  81. And she came in that instant, gave thanks likewise unto the Lord,

  82. and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

  83. And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord,

  84. they returned to Galilee to their own city, Nazareth.

  85. Let's pray.

  86. Heavenly Father, as we just take a few moments here to look at these two that were ready,

  87. were watching for you, Lord.

  88. We pray to be an encouragement to us also to know,

  89. even as we've looked at this morning,

  90. what it looks and what it means,

  91. and the joy that it comes to know that you're coming

  92. and what it will mean when that day comes.

  93. Lord, we pray just have your hand upon each one today.

  94. We might be encouraged and strengthened from your word,

  95. and we give you all the praise in Jesus' name.

  96. Amen.

  97. You know, here we have the first one that we have is Simeon.

  98. You know, the Bible says that he was waiting for the comfort,

  99. the consolation of those things.

  100. Mary and Joseph had come into the temple.

  101. You know, we know that Mary and Joseph were faithful Jewish parents.

  102. You know, they were faithful to do all that the law commanded them to do.

  103. They were doing all the things that they had been instructed.

  104. The Bible says there just a little earlier that they circumcised Jesus on the eighth day.

  105. On the eighth day, they had Jesus circumcised,

  106. which was according to the law that he had given to Moses,

  107. according to the covenant that God had made with Abraham,

  108. to those descendants of Abraham.

  109. And he had made that connection there.

  110. They circumcised him the eighth day,

  111. according to the law.

  112. Leviticus chapter 12 in verse 3 is where you find that commandment

    Leviticus 12 chapter mention

  113. that they were to be circumcised.

  114. The males were on the eighth day.

  115. And there's some reasons behind that when you study the scripture.

  116. You know, sometimes we ask,

  117. well, why did they circumcise the child on the eighth day?

  118. We'll test your Bible.

  119. Your detailed Bible trivia this morning.

  120. I'll give you a little clue.

  121. Everything you find in scripture concerning days,

  122. God lines out the wise.

  123. Seven days, Mary giving birth would have been considered unclean.

  124. On the eighth day,

  125. she was allowed to enter the sanctuary,

  126. allowed to do those things.

  127. So they circumcised the child on the eighth day,

  128. when the mom was able to participate.

  129. Immediately following,

  130. a young mom would be declared unclean

  131. on her waiting period again of 32 days.

  132. Forty days in all,

  133. a mom would wait

  134. before they would bring the child to the temple.

  135. So we know this was 40 days after Jesus was born.

  136. Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple

  137. to fulfill the next part of their responsibility.

  138. They're coming into the temple.

  139. There are 32 days.

  140. They made that seven-mile walk

  141. from Bethlehem to Jerusalem

  142. to present Jesus to the Lord.

  143. You know, take a look back in the Old Testament for a moment.

  144. There are Numbers chapter 3 for a moment.

    Numbers 3 chapter mention

  145. Numbers chapter 3 because, you know,

    Numbers 3 chapter mention

  146. how many times have you read this

  147. and really stopped to consider

  148. all the things that are being fulfilled here?

  149. The things that not only identify,

  150. but also allow Jesus to perfectly keep the law.

  151. If he was our Savior,

  152. if he was sinless,

  153. part of that responsibility fell on his parents

  154. to do and to keep the law,

  155. all the things he was supposed to do.

  156. He couldn't get there as a young child by himself,

  157. but notice here in verse 13,

  158. it says this,

  159. and because all the firstborn are mine,

  160. for on the day that I smote all the firstborn

  161. in the land of Egypt,

  162. I hollowed unto me all the firstborn of Israel,

  163. both man and beast,

  164. mine shall they be,

  165. I am the Lord.

  166. Now this is just one place

  167. as this is repeated to the children of Israel,

  168. that they are to bring the firstborn son

  169. and dedicate them unto the Lord

  170. because they belong to the Lord.

  171. Now in this,

  172. you'll find that this goes back

  173. because who can think of a mom

  174. who brought her first son

  175. to be dedicated unto the Lord?

  176. Hannah brought Samuel.

  177. Except in that case,

  178. she literally dedicated and gave him to the Lord.

  179. But part of this,

  180. when you read through scripture,

  181. we don't have time this morning,

  182. the parents could redeem the child with an offering.

  183. We know Hannah,

  184. there's no mention of her redeeming Samuel.

  185. She gave and dedicated Samuel unto God.

  186. And we know that Samuel served God his whole life,

  187. that she would bring him clothes,

  188. she would bring him all those things.

  189. But here Jesus,

  190. we find that Mary and Joseph redeem the child.

  191. It's a picture that we see.

  192. They came to offer the sacrifice

  193. that was required by the Mosaic law

  194. to purify Mary

  195. and to allow her to return to worship in the temple.

  196. And the synagogue is also when Jesus

  197. would be officially dedicated to God.

  198. And really, you might say,

  199. for his real father, you know,

  200. because Joseph was just his stepdad,

  201. if you want to use modern terms.

  202. You know, he's the one that took Jesus in

  203. and helped provide and to raise.

  204. As Mary's husband,

  205. he was not the father of Jesus.

  206. We know that was the Holy Spirit.

  207. You know, the text here we find,

  208. because notice as we look back here,

  209. in what we were reading here,

  210. notice what it tells us, verse 22.

  211. And when the days of her purification,

  212. according to the law of Moses,

  213. were accomplished,

  214. they brought him to Jerusalem

  215. to present him to the Lord.

  216. Because notice, verse 23 tells us that

  217. from the Old Testament.

  218. As it is written in the law of the Lord,

  219. every male that openeth the womb

  220. shall be called holy unto the Lord,

  221. and to offer a sacrifice

  222. according to that which is said

  223. in the law of the Lord,

  224. a pair of turtle doves

  225. and two young pigeons.

  226. Now, here's another good little insight

  227. that you'll find.

  228. This kid tells us the financial status

  229. of Mary and Joseph.

  230. You know, it's little things in Scripture

  231. that really help you understand

  232. what was going on

  233. and where they were at.

  234. What clue gives you here

  235. of what their financial status was?

  236. Sacrifice.

  237. Yeah, the sacrifice,

  238. because when we look in the Old Testament,

  239. they were to bring

  240. two different things.

  241. They were either to bring

  242. a lamb of the first year

  243. and a turtle dove

  244. or a pigeon as an offering,

  245. one for a burnt offering,

  246. one for a sin offering.

  247. If they could not afford the lamb,

  248. it was permitted for them

  249. to bring two pigeons

  250. or two turtle doves.

  251. One to be the burnt offering,

  252. one to be the sin offering.

  253. What was that?

  254. That was the poor person's offering,

  255. you might say,

  256. because the bird was cheaper

  257. than buying the lamb.

  258. So we know from what they bought

  259. that they didn't have much means.

  260. They were not wealthy.

  261. They were not well off.

  262. Which, just to ruin your Christmas tale,

  263. that means Mary did not ride

  264. a donkey to Jerusalem

  265. or down to Bethlehem

  266. because donkeys were for rich people.

  267. You know, that's a rich person's animal

  268. to have.

  269. So we know certain things

  270. that kind of ruin the Christmas story

  271. that we have in our mind as kids,

  272. you know, and adults,

  273. as you always see Mary

  274. riding the donkey, you know.

  275. I know, kids aren't up here,

  276. so I won't spoil it for them, you know.

  277. But you know, those are those

  278. little details in Scripture.

  279. But notice here,

  280. they couldn't afford a lamb.

  281. It was a poor family sacrifice.

  282. It says they were introduced

  283. doing these things

  284. because they were to bring it

  285. to the priest

  286. and to offer the sacrifice

  287. before the Lord.

  288. And while they're there,

  289. they come in

  290. and something takes place.

  291. We find an old Jewish worshiper

  292. by the name of Simeon,

  293. one who had received

  294. a revelation from the Holy Spirit

  295. that he would not see death

  296. until he had personally witnessed

  297. the coming Messiah.

  298. Look here in verse 25

  299. back in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  300. It says,

  301. Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem

  302. whose name was Simeon.

  303. The same man was just and devout

  304. waiting for the consolation of Israel,

  305. and the Holy Ghost was upon him,

  306. and it was revealed unto him

  307. by the Holy Ghost

  308. that he should not see death

  309. before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  310. Now, as we consider in the Old Testament,

  311. the Old Testament times

  312. were different from today.

  313. We need to keep what's being said there

  314. important,

  315. but it says in the Old Testament,

  316. the Holy Spirit would come and go

  317. from people.

  318. The Holy Spirit could come upon a person

  319. and depart.

  320. Now, what's different about today?

  321. Today, as a New Testament saint,

  322. because Christ has paid the price

  323. for our sin,

  324. the Comforter has come,

  325. and the Holy Spirit dwells

  326. in every believer.

  327. That's how Jesus says,

  328. I will never leave you

  329. nor forsake you.

  330. In the Old Testament,

  331. the Holy Spirit would come

  332. and go from people.

  333. In the New Testament,

  334. we have a promise

  335. that he will never depart.

  336. He is the earnest of our salvation.

  337. We have a special promise.

  338. You know, like I said,

  339. I'm glad all the promises

  340. of Scripture don't belong to me.

  341. I'm glad that we have specific ones

  342. that do apply to us.

  343. Like, once you're saved,

  344. you are sealed with the Holy Spirit.

  345. He is our security

  346. of the promise to be fulfilled

  347. that we will one day

  348. be completely and fully redeemed.

  349. Brought out from very presence of sin.

  350. You know?

  351. And we see here of what took place

  352. because when Mary and Joseph show up,

  353. they're offering these things.

  354. Now, I don't know about you,

  355. but I just kind of picture in my mind

  356. knowing moms,

  357. that this is one of those weird moments.

  358. Because here's Mary,

  359. because have you ever been around young moms?

  360. How do young moms treat

  361. a seven-day-old baby?

  362. Or excuse me,

  363. at this point,

  364. you'd be 40 days old.

  365. That's still pretty old.

  366. How are most young moms at that stage?

  367. Yeah, they're like,

  368. you know,

  369. they're in,

  370. don't you dare.

  371. But I want you to see the picture here.

  372. Simeon walks over

  373. and doesn't tell us all.

  374. It says he took the baby.

  375. I imagine that he wasn't a brave enough guy

  376. just to take him.

  377. I suspect he asked.

  378. But he looks at Jesus

  379. and makes a proclamation.

  380. Here, Mary and Joseph

  381. had already seen all these things

  382. 40 days earlier with the angel,

  383. with the shepherds.

  384. Prior to that,

  385. about 11 months earlier,

  386. the angel had come to them

  387. and declared all these things.

  388. I mean,

  389. they had quite a year.

  390. They had a lot of things happen in that year.

  391. So here comes up Simeon

  392. and notice what he says

  393. about this child.

  394. He says,

  395. Lord, thou knowest,

  396. thou lettest thou thy servant

  397. depart in peace

  398. according to thy word.

  399. You know,

  400. here's an old guy that says,

  401. Lord,

  402. I can go to heaven now

  403. because what you've promised me

  404. has been fulfilled.

  405. I got to see the Savior.

  406. How did he know who Jesus is?

  407. What in the text,

  408. how do we know he knew who Jesus is?

  409. How did he know?

  410. He says,

  411. the Holy Spirit revealed it to him.

  412. The Holy Spirit allowed him to know

  413. and he does this.

  414. He comes and he takes the child

  415. and he says,

  416. for my eyes have seen thy salvation,

  417. which thou hast prepared

  418. before the face of all people

  419. a light to lighten the Gentiles

  420. and the glory of thy people Israel.

  421. You know,

  422. and Joseph and Mary,

  423. and Joseph and his mother

  424. marveled at those things

  425. which are spoken of him.

  426. You know,

  427. marveled.

  428. They were amazed.

  429. And I'm thinking in my mind,

  430. I don't know about you,

  431. but what more could amaze you

  432. at that point

  433. of all the things

  434. that have happened in their life?

  435. You had the angel come talk to them.

  436. You had the shepherds

  437. come make a declaration.

  438. And now they get,

  439. and Simeon comes up to them

  440. and says,

  441. hey,

  442. I know who the child is.

  443. They were caught off guard once again.

  444. They marveled

  445. at what was being said.

  446. And then he addresses Mary.

  447. Verse 34,

  448. it says,

  449. And Simeon blessed them

  450. and said unto Mary his mother,

  451. Behold,

  452. this child is set

  453. for a fall and rising again

  454. of many in Israel.

  455. For as a sign

  456. which shall be spoken against you,

  457. a sword shall pierce

  458. through thine own soul also,

  459. that the thoughts

  460. of many hearts

  461. may be revealed.

  462. You know,

  463. he brought some good news,

  464. but he also looked at Mary

  465. and said,

  466. hey,

  467. as a mom,

  468. there's going to be

  469. some struggle coming.

  470. This is a prophecy

  471. that's applied

  472. when Mary was sitting

  473. at the foot of the cross.

  474. Not just as a person

  475. witnessing it,

  476. but as a mom.

  477. Piercing her own soul

  478. the reality

  479. of what was going to come to pass.

  480. Preparing her

  481. for what was going to come

  482. that God

  483. was going to allow

  484. and what God had

  485. prophesied

  486. was going to come to pass.

  487. Because all this

  488. was coming about

  489. because Jesus

  490. was going to save

  491. his people.

  492. He was going to provide

  493. redemption

  494. for everyone.

  495. You know,

  496. notice verse 30.

  497. He says,

  498. my eyes have seen

  499. what?

  500. Thy salvation.

  501. He says,

  502. here's the one

  503. that's going to bring

  504. salvation

  505. not only to the Jews,

  506. but to you and I,

  507. to the Gentiles.

  508. All these things

  509. were revealed

  510. and this prophecy

  511. reveals so much

  512. and Mary's going to

  513. experience that

  514. unique sorrow

  515. because what Jesus

  516. is going to face

  517. and what she has

  518. to go through

  519. we have Simeon

  520. the prophet

  521. that comes

  522. and does this

  523. but then we have

  524. another individual

  525. by the name of Anna.

  526. Now Anna's another

  527. unique individual

  528. when it comes

  529. to this account

  530. because it's another

  531. individual unattached.

  532. You know,

  533. there's no real

  534. connection in the story.

  535. There's nothing there

  536. and Anna is waiting

  537. for that forgiveness

  538. that God brings.

  539. Notice here

  540. because she's the one

  541. that she's excited

  542. to hear

  543. what Simeon

  544. had to say

  545. about the salvation

  546. of the Lord.

  547. Look at verse 36.

  548. It says,

  549. and there was one Anna,

  550. a prophetess,

  551. the daughter of Phaniel

  552. of the tribe of Asher.

  553. She was of great age

  554. and had lived

  555. with a husband

  556. of her husband

  557. seven years

  558. from her virginity

  559. and was a widow

  560. of about four score

  561. and four years

  562. which she parted

  563. not from the temple

  564. but served God

  565. with fasting and prayer

  566. night and day.

  567. And so we see here

  568. that Anna was

  569. a godly widow

  570. who had anticipated

  571. God's deliverance

  572. would come.

  573. You know,

  574. think about,

  575. read through that

  576. for a moment

  577. and what things

  578. do we know

  579. about Anna?

  580. What are some things

  581. we can learn

  582. from her

  583. from the passage?

  584. She was old.

  585. How old was she?

  586. You know,

  587. she was getting up

  588. in years,

  589. definitely,

  590. you know,

  591. at least 84 years.

  592. Yeah.

  593. She lived upon

  594. the temple grounds.

  595. What else do we learn

  596. from her

  597. or about her?

  598. Yeah,

  599. she served God.

  600. It was her focus.

  601. And we learn

  602. lots of things.

  603. One is that she had

  604. nobody else

  605. to take care of her

  606. probably

  607. because what would

  608. have been a custom

  609. of the day

  610. is the widows

  611. that were widows

  612. indeed

  613. that they talk about

  614. later in the New Testament

  615. because there is

  616. a difference

  617. between a widow

  618. and a widow indeed.

  619. That term there

  620. signifies something

  621. very important

  622. because what it

  623. signifies is means

  624. because some widows

  625. of that day

  626. would have had means

  627. from the family

  628. and others

  629. that would have

  630. been able to

  631. take care of them

  632. which family

  633. is always the first option.

  634. But then you're

  635. going to have some

  636. that have no means.

  637. You know,

  638. who are some widows

  639. that didn't have

  640. any means

  641. that you can think

  642. of in Scripture?

  643. Who's that?

  644. Yeah,

  645. the widow

  646. that was with Elijah

  647. there and the kings.

  648. Remember,

  649. she was poor

  650. and was what?

  651. She was gathering up

  652. all the,

  653. to eat their last meal.

  654. The widow

  655. with two mites.

  656. What's that?

  657. Naomi

  658. and her daughter-in-law

  659. Ruth.

  660. I mean,

  661. when you read

  662. that account

  663. that's some

  664. of that dynamic

  665. and where'd they,

  666. where'd Naomi

  667. and Ruth

  668. go back to?

  669. They went to family

  670. and the family

  671. was beginning

  672. to make provision.

  673. So we see

  674. this pattern

  675. in Scripture

  676. and that's

  677. one of those things

  678. that we can learn

  679. from that.

  680. We can know

  681. that she was

  682. another term here

  683. that talks about

  684. her being a prophetess

  685. which indicates

  686. that she was one

  687. that was excited

  688. about what God

  689. is doing.

  690. She was a declarer

  691. of what God's doing,

  692. of what she knew

  693. and we understand

  694. she was a widow

  695. of,

  696. she'd only been married

  697. seven years

  698. before her husband died.

  699. You know,

  700. that's a pretty

  701. short time.

  702. So she had been

  703. a widow quite a while.

  704. I mean,

  705. we look at this

  706. and probably 60 plus

  707. years she'd been

  708. a widow.

  709. So this is not,

  710. where she was

  711. wasn't new,

  712. you know,

  713. she was of great age

  714. but she was also

  715. in the temple

  716. night and day

  717. and serving God,

  718. you know,

  719. and the priests

  720. and what they

  721. would have done

  722. is the temple

  723. would have had

  724. an area

  725. where the widows

  726. could come

  727. and stay

  728. and to help out

  729. and the temple

  730. would have helped

  731. take care of

  732. what came in the temple

  733. would have helped

  734. take care of

  735. some of the widows.

  736. It was like a widow

  737. housing

  738. that they would have

  739. had around the temple

  740. grounds

  741. that would have

  742. been associated.

  743. That's what history

  744. reveals to us

  745. about how they

  746. would have dealt

  747. with that,

  748. you know,

  749. if you want

  750. biblical social programs,

  751. that was God's

  752. social program

  753. is that God's people

  754. made sure people

  755. were taken care of.

  756. And that's a whole

  757. other discussion

  758. for another day

  759. to get into

  760. of culture

  761. and modern day

  762. dynamics of things.

  763. But,

  764. so we'll not get

  765. down that side

  766. trail this morning.

  767. But she comes

  768. and she starts

  769. praising God

  770. upon seeing the baby

  771. because she's witnessing

  772. what Simeon is saying.

  773. You know,

  774. hey,

  775. here I've seen

  776. the salvation

  777. of the Lord.

  778. You know,

  779. she's excited

  780. about what she's hearing,

  781. that what she's

  782. been looking for

  783. and what is,

  784. that salvation

  785. has come.

  786. You know,

  787. both Simeon

  788. and Anna

  789. understood

  790. what they were

  791. looking for.

  792. Notice in verse 38,

  793. and she came

  794. in that instant

  795. and gave thanks

  796. likewise unto the Lord

  797. and spake of him

  798. of all them

  799. that looked for

  800. redemption

  801. in Jerusalem.

  802. In other words,

  803. this tells us

  804. what she did

  805. afterwards too.

  806. Because what she

  807. did after she

  808. learned that Jesus

  809. was born,

  810. that God's salvation

  811. had come.

  812. All those she

  813. came across,

  814. she started

  815. sharing it with.

  816. She was excited

  817. that God's salvation

  818. began sharing it

  819. with others.

  820. She had declared

  821. it to everybody

  822. that this baby

  823. is the one

  824. who will give

  825. and provide

  826. salvation.

  827. You know,

  828. to be redeemed

  829. is the idea

  830. that God

  831. has bought us

  832. out of sin.

  833. You know,

  834. given us forgiveness

  835. and freed us

  836. to serve him

  837. willingly.

  838. You know,

  839. Anna knew

  840. that ever since

  841. God had redeemed

  842. Israel from Egypt,

  843. the Passover

  844. had been celebrated

  845. in anticipation

  846. of God's ultimate

  847. salvation.

  848. And she's happy

  849. to declare

  850. what God

  851. has promised

  852. and what God

  853. has revealed

  854. to them.

  855. And we see here

  856. that when Jesus

  857. arrived,

  858. God revealed

  859. to them

  860. that this was

  861. the Messiah

  862. they were looking

  863. to see

  864. all their lives.

  865. You know,

  866. these two are

  867. interesting pair

  868. of individuals

  869. within the temple

  870. because they

  871. were looking

  872. and anticipating

  873. for what God

  874. was going to do.

  875. God revealed

  876. to them

  877. this was the Messiah

  878. they'd been looking

  879. for.

  880. Both of them

  881. had waited a lifetime

  882. to see the Savior.

  883. Both of these

  884. were old.

  885. You know,

  886. they didn't just

  887. start watching

  888. the day before.

  889. They'd been

  890. faithful for years

  891. looking

  892. and waiting

  893. and serving.

  894. And we see here

  895. that they had

  896. both declared

  897. Jesus was the one

  898. they'd anticipated

  899. and they announced

  900. it to all

  901. that were around

  902. them.

  903. You know,

  904. because if we

  905. consider

  906. why is

  907. what's going

  908. on here

  909. important?

  910. That's another

  911. good question

  912. to ask

  913. when you look

  914. at Scripture.

  915. Why is this

  916. recorded for us?

  917. What's it

  918. revealed to us?

  919. No,

  920. the preacher

  921. is making you

  922. think on Sunday

  923. morning.

  924. God giving

  925. reassurance.

  926. You know,

  927. understand the

  928. promise.

  929. different

  930. responsibilities

  931. and different

  932. things that God

  933. God's orchestrating

  934. all this

  935. for people

  936. who

  937. up to this

  938. point we don't

  939. have any indication

  940. even knew one

  941. another.

  942. But God put them

  943. in the right place

  944. at the right time.

  945. You know,

  946. and that's the way

  947. God works,

  948. that God puts

  949. people there

  950. and they died

  951. in peace

  952. knowing they

  953. had seen

  954. God's Christ.

  955. You know,

  956. think about that

  957. ideal of they

  958. were waiting

  959. for the Lord's

  960. salvation,

  961. they were waiting

  962. for the Lord

  963. to come.

  964. And think about

  965. Simeon's statement,

  966. he says,

  967. I can now

  968. depart in what?

  969. Peace because

  970. I've seen

  971. God's salvation.

  972. You know,

  973. what a wonderful

  974. promise that is,

  975. that when it

  976. comes time to

  977. depart,

  978. when you know

  979. the Lord,

  980. you can depart

  981. in peace.

  982. Knowing that

  983. you have the

  984. peace that

  985. passes all

  986. understanding,

  987. that God

  988. is fulfilling

  989. and will

  990. fulfill his

  991. promises.

  992. You know,

  993. after all these

  994. years,

  995. since Jesus

  996. was there the

  997. first time,

  998. we're now

  999. looking just

  1000. like Simeon

  1001. and Anna did.

  1002. You know,

  1003. we talked this

  1004. morning about

  1005. watching.

  1006. Simeon and Anna

  1007. are great examples

  1008. of faithful

  1009. watchers.

  1010. They were on

  1011. watch looking

  1012. for his first

  1013. coming.

  1014. They're a great

  1015. example,

  1016. for us

  1017. to be

  1018. watching

  1019. for his

  1020. next.

  1021. They're an

  1022. example of

  1023. that.

  1024. After all

  1025. those things,

  1026. we ought to be

  1027. looking for

  1028. Jesus.

  1029. You think about

  1030. how many

  1031. generations have

  1032. just considered,

  1033. well,

  1034. this,

  1035. I'm going to

  1036. see Christ in

  1037. my generation.

  1038. You know?

  1039. I've met a lot

  1040. of old preachers

  1041. when I first

  1042. started getting

  1043. into this.

  1044. Oh,

  1045. I'm not going

  1046. to die.

  1047. The Lord's

  1048. going to

  1049. return first.

  1050. You know?

  1051. I think that's

  1052. a hope of

  1053. every believer

  1054. because,

  1055. you know,

  1056. it ought to

  1057. be a hope

  1058. because it

  1059. is something

  1060. exciting because

  1061. you know what

  1062. you get to

  1063. skip?

  1064. Death.

  1065. You get caught

  1066. up to be with

  1067. him.

  1068. You get to

  1069. skip something

  1070. that nobody

  1071. looks forward

  1072. to.

  1073. But you know

  1074. what?

  1075. At the moment

  1076. of death,

  1077. it's still no

  1078. different because

  1079. to be absent

  1080. from the body

  1081. is to be present

  1082. with the Lord.

  1083. It's just

  1084. getting there a

  1085. different way.

  1086. But everybody's

  1087. expecting the

  1088. Lord's return

  1089. at any moment.

  1090. You know?

  1091. We can learn

  1092. from Anna and

  1093. Simeon that

  1094. today we ought

  1095. to be doing

  1096. the same.

  1097. Being excited,

  1098. looking forward

  1099. to what God's

  1100. going to do

  1101. because we

  1102. don't know

  1103. if Jesus is

  1104. going to come

  1105. before the

  1106. year's end.

  1107. I mean,

  1108. we might not

  1109. even have to

  1110. worry about

  1111. 2025.

  1112. You know?

  1113. I ain't even

  1114. getting an

  1115. amen for that

  1116. one.

  1117. You know?

  1118. But we don't

  1119. know.

  1120. It may be

  1121. before we

  1122. celebrate a

  1123. new year.

  1124. It may be

  1125. next year.

  1126. The reality

  1127. is it may

  1128. be 100 years

  1129. from now.

  1130. We don't

  1131. know.

  1132. But we can

  1133. learn from

  1134. Simeon and

  1135. Anna the

  1136. very reality

  1137. of what we

  1138. talked about

  1139. earlier this

  1140. morning.

  1141. Because they

  1142. weren't sure

  1143. either, but

  1144. they were

  1145. excited because

  1146. they were

  1147. looking.

  1148. They were

  1149. waiting.

  1150. You know,

  1151. because after

  1152. this many

  1153. years, you

  1154. know, many

  1155. people get

  1156. kind of off

  1157. track.

  1158. I mean,

  1159. I think that's

  1160. the other reason

  1161. we see today.

  1162. There's not

  1163. many, there's

  1164. fewer and

  1165. fewer people

  1166. looking for

  1167. the Lord's

  1168. return.

  1169. You see a

  1170. shift of

  1171. society, even

  1172. amongst people

  1173. who claim to

  1174. trust Christ

  1175. and claim to

  1176. trust the

  1177. Word of God,

  1178. that they

  1179. lose sight of

  1180. the fact that

  1181. the blessed

  1182. hope is his

  1183. coming.

  1184. And they

  1185. begin to look

  1186. and you see

  1187. all sorts of

  1188. weather doctrines

  1189. starting to fade

  1190. in.

  1191. Well, he

  1192. hasn't returned

  1193. yet, so they

  1194. begin to scoff

  1195. at it.

  1196. You know,

  1197. 2 Peter 3

  1198. talks about

  1199. that.

  1200. Peter says

  1201. in the later

  1202. days there's

  1203. going to be

  1204. scoffers.

  1205. And what are

  1206. they going to

  1207. be scoffing

  1208. at?

  1209. Where is the

  1210. promise of

  1211. his coming?

  1212. You know,

  1213. I think we're

  1214. seeing some of

  1215. that today,

  1216. that people are

  1217. scoffing once

  1218. again.

  1219. You know,

  1220. the Lord's not

  1221. going to return,

  1222. we don't have

  1223. to worry about

  1224. it.

  1225. People lose

  1226. sight of that

  1227. importance.

  1228. You know,

  1229. I want to

  1230. encourage you,

  1231. don't let the

  1232. scoffers and

  1233. the pessimists

  1234. cause you to

  1235. question the

  1236. word of God

  1237. regarding Christ's

  1238. return.

  1239. Because what

  1240. God said is

  1241. going to be

  1242. so.

  1243. Just as

  1244. Simeon and

  1245. Anna, why

  1246. were they

  1247. looking for

  1248. the Lord's

  1249. salvation?

  1250. Because God

  1251. said he was

  1252. coming.

  1253. We ought to

  1254. be looking for

  1255. our redemption

  1256. because Jesus

  1257. said it's

  1258. coming.

  1259. We ought to

  1260. be excited

  1261. about those

  1262. things and

  1263. not let

  1264. scoffers detract

  1265. from it.

  1266. You know,

  1267. the good news

  1268. is it could

  1269. be this

  1270. afternoon.

  1271. You know,

  1272. we don't

  1273. know.

  1274. We can be

  1275. looking and

  1276. excited about

  1277. those things.

  1278. And so,

  1279. what's something

  1280. we can take

  1281. away from

  1282. this lesson?

  1283. Well,

  1284. at the beginning

  1285. of a new

  1286. year,

  1287. we need to

  1288. be optimistic

  1289. that Jesus

  1290. could come

  1291. at any time.

  1292. Because when

  1293. you live in

  1294. light of the

  1295. Savior,

  1296. it changes

  1297. your choices.

  1298. It alters

  1299. the decisions

  1300. and the

  1301. priorities that

  1302. you make.

  1303. it gets

  1304. us focused

  1305. on the

  1306. right things

  1307. because,

  1308. you know,

  1309. we all

  1310. face,

  1311. we can,

  1312. as we face

  1313. the excitement

  1314. and potential

  1315. of a new

  1316. year,

  1317. we begin

  1318. to prioritize

  1319. things that

  1320. are important.

  1321. But the

  1322. most highest

  1323. priority we

  1324. ought to have

  1325. is the

  1326. consideration

  1327. that this

  1328. might be

  1329. the year

  1330. that Jesus

  1331. returns.

  1332. To keep

  1333. our focus

  1334. on the

  1335. right things.

  1336. Because this

  1337. time of year,

  1338. a lot of

  1339. people,

  1340. you say,

  1341. what are you

  1342. talking about

  1343. priorities?

  1344. You know,

  1345. people reprioritize

  1346. things.

  1347. resolutions.

  1348. You know,

  1349. today we

  1350. call them

  1351. resolutions.

  1352. You know,

  1353. I'm not

  1354. going to be

  1355. so fat

  1356. in 25.

  1357. You know,

  1358. I'm going

  1359. to eat

  1360. better,

  1361. I'm going

  1362. to exercise

  1363. better,

  1364. I'm going

  1365. to take

  1366. more responsibility

  1367. and accountability,

  1368. you know,

  1369. and you have

  1370. all sorts of

  1371. things people

  1372. resolve to do

  1373. and it's

  1374. ironic because

  1375. most people

  1376. don't keep

  1377. them for the

  1378. first two

  1379. weeks.

  1380. By January

  1381. 14th,

  1382. most resolutions

  1383. are broken.

  1384. But as a

  1385. believer,

  1386. we ought to

  1387. make sure

  1388. that our

  1389. focus upon

  1390. the Savior

  1391. returning

  1392. isn't broken.

  1393. That we're

  1394. living in

  1395. light of

  1396. those things.

  1397. We ought to

  1398. be prepared

  1399. for what

  1400. God is

  1401. doing.

  1402. You know,

  1403. to be

  1404. personally

  1405. prepared for

  1406. the return

  1407. of the Lord

  1408. and why

  1409. we're waiting

  1410. for His

  1411. return.

  1412. We need

  1413. to be

  1414. doing.

  1415. You know,

  1416. think about

  1417. what did

  1418. we learn

  1419. from Anna

  1420. and what

  1421. did we

  1422. learn from

  1423. Simeon

  1424. about what

  1425. we ought to

  1426. be doing

  1427. while we're

  1428. waiting.

  1429. I'll give you

  1430. a clue.

  1431. Look over

  1432. in verse 37.

  1433. Serving.

  1434. You know,

  1435. to do those

  1436. things.

  1437. You know,

  1438. we already

  1439. talked about

  1440. this this

  1441. morning,

  1442. but this

  1443. is a great

  1444. example of

  1445. the application

  1446. of the

  1447. morning's

  1448. message.

  1449. We see

  1450. people actually

  1451. living and

  1452. doing exactly

  1453. what Jesus

  1454. told us to

  1455. do.

  1456. Giving us

  1457. those things

  1458. that we

  1459. ought to do.

  1460. And they

  1461. were in

  1462. the temple

  1463. praying and

  1464. fasting.

  1465. They waited

  1466. for the

  1467. redemption of

  1468. Israel and

  1469. the coming

  1470. Messiah.

  1471. She was

  1472. actively involved

  1473. in what God

  1474. was doing and

  1475. serving other

  1476. people.

  1477. You know,

  1478. Anna, I

  1479. believe,

  1480. gives us an

  1481. example of

  1482. someone who

  1483. was watching

  1484. and waiting

  1485. for the

  1486. coming Messiah.

  1487. The same

  1488. we ought to

  1489. be today.

  1490. We have

  1491. examples of

  1492. what God

  1493. instructs us

  1494. to do.

  1495. That it's

  1496. not outside

  1497. the realm

  1498. because if

  1499. other people

  1500. could do it,

  1501. you know what

  1502. that tells

  1503. you?

  1504. That we

  1505. could have

  1506. that same

  1507. focus.

  1508. We have

  1509. that same

  1510. accountability.

  1511. You know,

  1512. and that

  1513. Anna was

  1514. quick to

  1515. tell everybody

  1516. about her

  1517. experience

  1518. with the

  1519. Redeemer.

  1520. You know,

  1521. that's another

  1522. example of

  1523. those things,

  1524. you know,

  1525. of how we

  1526. behave while

  1527. we look for

  1528. Jesus to

  1529. return.

  1530. We ought

  1531. to be looking

  1532. for that

  1533. imminent

  1534. return of

  1535. Jesus,

  1536. but while

  1537. we wait,

  1538. we ought

  1539. to be

  1540. busy about

  1541. the Lord's

  1542. work and

  1543. telling others

  1544. to be

  1545. prepared.

  1546. To let

  1547. others know

  1548. how to be

  1549. prepared and

  1550. that they

  1551. need to be

  1552. prepared,

  1553. you know.

  1554. But that

  1555. comes first

  1556. when you

  1557. understand it

  1558. yourself.

  1559. You can't

  1560. be excited

  1561. about something

  1562. that you

  1563. don't have

  1564. any connection

  1565. with,

  1566. you know.

  1567. It's kind

  1568. of like

  1569. watching Husker

  1570. football fans

  1571. yesterday.

  1572. They're all

  1573. excited because

  1574. they've been

  1575. waiting ten

  1576. years for

  1577. this.

  1578. They had a

  1579. connection.

  1580. You know,

  1581. you're excited

  1582. because there's

  1583. a connection.

  1584. When you're

  1585. not connected,

  1586. it loses

  1587. emphasis in

  1588. your life.

  1589. And so as

  1590. we look at

  1591. these things,

  1592. I want to

  1593. just encourage

  1594. you as we

  1595. get ready to

  1596. enter into a

  1597. new year to

  1598. be involved

  1599. and to

  1600. use the

  1601. example of

  1602. even Anna

  1603. and Simeon

  1604. to allow the

  1605. Spirit to

  1606. guide you,

  1607. direct you,

  1608. but to be

  1609. busy working

  1610. to do what

  1611. God wants us

  1612. to do.

  1613. Because just

  1614. like Anna

  1615. in the New

  1616. Testament,

  1617. let's serve

  1618. God and pray

  1619. how we can

  1620. best work for

  1621. the Lord while

  1622. we wait and

  1623. watch for

  1624. His return.

  1625. Some things

  1626. to consider as

  1627. we get ready

  1628. to enter.

  1629. a new year.

  1630. Let's pray.

  1631. Heavenly Father,

  1632. as we come

  1633. before you

  1634. today, Lord,

  1635. I just thank

  1636. you for your

  1637. word.
